Reviews (page 5 of 8)

nice enough

Great album, really enjoyed it.

Cilla Black if she was American.

Not a country fan. This wasn’t bad. Lady can really sing.

First listened to this album in 2020 and haven't revisited since so it was a lot of fun. Insanely good album cover. Emmylou is an artist who has a lot of songs that I think are 5/5 but maybe does not have a masterpiece album so I think there are a few songs on here that don't do a whole lot for me but also a few that are amazing so it's a mixed bag. Close to a 4 might readjust later Fav song: If I Could Only Win Your Love

Not an album that would be in my current rotation, but was enjoyable in a sense. 70s country has the essence of country music that is lost on the modern genre that can not be replicated with sincerity, while also most certainly being the equivalent of "pop country" for its time. Falls closer to John Denver in take and tone than it does Johnny Cash.

Not a fan of country music especially. Beautiful voice and lyricism but ultimately ended up quitting half way and playing Chemical Brothers

Old country music really has a cozy feeling to me. Not really amazing hit's in this one but i really enjoyed myself. amazing voice and a really nice atmosphere. I probably won't remember it after this but i would not mind if someone put this on.

More Country! This has a coat of many colors cover which is funny since that was my second album on this site. Also a good beatles cover. Idk if these are all covers but they're all good. It doesn't do too much beyond being some good country, but it's good for what it is. 7/10

It's always interesting in this project to get an artist's albums out of chronological order, and in this case her debut(esque) album is coming to me long after I listened to her 19th studio album ("Red Dirt Girl"). This album is definitely *much* more traditional-country-oriented than her later album, and while I can see how this helped her break out to country audiences, I didn't really find most of the songs all that compelling; my favorites were probably Rodney Crowell's "Bluebird wine", her ode to Gram Parsons in "From Boulder to Birmingham", and Shel Silverstein's "Queen of the silver dollar". (I also had high hopes for her covers of Dolly Parton's "Coat of many colors" and The Beatles' "To no one", but they kind of fell flat for me in very different ways; the former seemed too similar to the original, while the latter is a far more creative cover sound wise, but ends up sounding like so many other country laments in the process.) It's impressive how many connections to artists like Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton she'd already made by the time this album was made, and fun to think how those three would all collaborate many years later on "Trio", and I'm also impressed at the lineup of band members she and the producer arranged for the album (and some of them as part of her touring band).

I like her duets much better.

Admittedly I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy country music HOWEVER Emmylou has an amazing voice and I certainly found myself enjoying a fair bit of this album. Loved the choice of opening song with its upbeat instrumentals and Bottle Let Me Down was also a personal favourite. I am keen to hear more from her. Minus point for B**tles shit.

Loved the first few tracks and enjoyed the album as a whole, wasn't an unpleasant experience. But didn't find it particularly notable and would much prefer to listen to Crack the Skye by Mastodon. Fuck yeah. 6/10

Old style country. Fine

A good singer but not quite my kind of music

A little too Jesus at times, but I dig this for what it is.

I think I've heard better from Emmylou. Still a solid album

It was a really enjoyable listen, but it ran out of gas halfway through and at the end of the album I’m asking myself, what’s the point of this album being included? Sounds a lot like a lot of other country and folk and I’ve heard a lot more that does a lot more than this.

Solid album but not a standout. On the three side one a 3.5.

Her voice is so beautiful even if country isn’t my vibe.

Her voice is GORGEOUS! Her lyrics and songwriting skills are GORGEOUS! This album as a whole gets a little sleepy sounding

Standout track: California Cotton Fields

Really good stuff, Coat of Many Colors still slaps

It was alright, not my favourite sort of country voice gets a bit grating after a while

The first track went real hard and then it was fine after.

Emmylou Harris has a great voice, and I can get into it on the more bluegrassy songs. But much of this is too country for me. Coming from 1975, though, this really seemed to set the tone for and inspire a lot of 80s and 90s country.

Emmylou has a voice that soothes the soul. I wish her musical tastes had been in something other than country, like folk. After almost 1050 albums, I can confidently conclude that I prefer female vocalists. And Emmylou has a great voice.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS- # 34 Miss Emmylou woooo…who knew country music could sound this divine? 🎤🤩 Listening to these lovely tracks I was simply in awe of Harris’ serene vocal delivery and spirited performances. There is no mistaking the traditional toe-tapping southern bluegrass sound textures and although the album contains mostly covers of original songs by country stars of the day (ie. Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard) and even a Beatles track, Emmylou’s renditions really shine and are more than welcomed here. 🎧 Classic Track: Bluebird Wine 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Before Believing 🎧 Personal Favorite: Boulder to Birmingham She may have been a singer-songwriter without the actual songwriting to her credit on this release, however the sole track she did pen (Boulder to Birmingham) highlights what the future would hold and is the emotional standout. 🖼️ Album Artwork: Subtly stunning Hit the Thumbs Up icon below if you enjoyed my take on the album :)

That sure was a country album

Perfectly enjoyable. I'd probably like it but on repeat listens.

Old school country with a sweet and gentle voice. Had heard of Emmylou Harris before, but probably wouldn't recognize a single song. It's hard to ignore the culture rift that was downstream from this, but I nonetheless really liked it!

This was a pretty good old school country album I've never really listened to Emmylou Harris but I wasn't completely against it!

A mellow country music record. Liked it more than I thought I would.

There’s a direct line between Emmylou and Adrienne Lenker

I tried to listen to this with an open mind. Emmylou Harris does have a very nice voice but it's not nice enough to overcome my dislike for country music. I'll give it 3 because if you are a country fan this is probably some classic 70's country music for you.

3 - good country western album. Al title slow at points

Good sad girl country, very similar voice to Dolly Parton, so their collaboration makes sense. I recon if you're not in a sad country mood this album is very samey and grating

Sweet album - good covers

a few good tunes

Emmylou you grabbed my attention and you held it for 42 minutes and for that, I commend you! Some stylistic things are keeping me from a high rating but all in all, this album was solid.

What a lovely voice. And some excellent covers. But I wish she had written more songs.

A 3 from me, definitely got my ear in for country now. Too Far Gone was my fav and enjoyed hearing Boulder to Birmingham again

Enjoyed this

As perfectly mid tier as it gets

Some fun country/blues-y love songs. Won't relisten but I enjoyed. Clearly very talented singer and these songs are the exact kind of thing I picture in my head if I were to describe my ideal kind of Country Music

I enjoyed her contribution to Gram Parsons' Grievous Angel album earlier on this list. I enjoyed her on her own album too. She's got a lovely voice that sounds good solo or harmonizing. The heartbreak country genre isn't my favorite though I teared up listening to her cover of Coat of Many Colors. The cover of the Beatles' For No One was interesting, but I didn't like as much - too slow. All in all, a pretty decent album.

Cute! I would rather listen to Emmylou than to an old country dude singing about his truck.

Quite interesting to directly compare Emmylou Harris to Dolly Parton and to themselves in "Trio". Although it is all very samey and country really isn't my genre. While I didn't dislike the music, the album does not deserve to be on this list because it is no different from any other classic country album.

Great listen.

Fine, but not much to get excited about here. Low 3.

Pretty solid country, great voice. High 3

Shoutout part of this album was recorded in Maryland! Pretty solid country, which still doesn't do much for me, but I enjoyed the Dolly and Beatles covers. Better than I expected.

For when I’m a heartbroken cowgirl

Queen Of The Silver Dollar struck me as the best of this collection, a toe-tappin’ happy singalong. It was good overall, I don’t mind a bit of Emmylou Harris in small-to-medium doses.

Aardig. Typisch.

This album is pretty good. Emmylou's voice is pretty and soulful, well suited to the songs collected here. The music is good across the board, nothing I'm super excited about but nothing that I dislike. This was worth hearing, and while it's unlikely I'll go out of my way to listen to it again I'm glad this gave me a reason to listen to it.

She has such a beautiful voice. Nice early CW.

She has a beautiful voice. Not a big fan of country but she does her things right from what ive heard

Låter rätt lik Dolly Parton i rösten. Annars är sån här, klassisk, country rätt medioker. Det är inte nödvändigtvis dåligt. Men rätt simpla melodier och sång som inte får mig att reagera. Det är bitvis vackert. Men utan oumph. Typ en trea.

Säger som på förra plattan, hon har en fantastisk röst men låtarna gör inte tillräckligt med mig för att det ska kunna bli mer än en trea.

The album opens with "Bluebird Wine," which is spirited and infectious. Unfortunately, while the rest of the album is well written and performed, they never return to that level of energy. Emmylou's voice is really impressive and fits the music, but after a while the whole mood becomes soporific.

Country

Good for what it is, but I just don’t like country.

Good voice but for me just fine overall. Enjoyed some of the country that spotify played afterwards more...

Overproduced, overly sappy, but great voice, and decent band. 3 loves lost out of 5

not my style but I appreciate the artistry of the instrumentation and vocal harmonies. 7.3/10

не мое, но ничего плохого сказать не могу.

Not my genre, but a few good songs covered by Elvis Costello

Classic country. I could’ve listened to this again.

A bit slow to start for my liking but picks up towards the end and is an enjoyable listen for the most part.

I don't think I'll ever like country, but this is about as close as I'll get to liking it

Interesting that "Coat of Many Colors" now has appeared on this list twice. Harris is a talented musician, and I enjoyed this album.

She has a great voice, this genre is just not my cup of tea

Nice country but it's just not my thing

I didn't like it but I didn't hate it. ,albeit I even grew as a person for having listened to it.

***An ok album. Most tracks sound similar

Chill 70s country. Good but not great

It was pretty nice! I don't know I'd go back to it with urgency, but a very pleasant listen :)

Another staple of early country music, but just doesn't carry the same weight as Loretta Lynn.

Bell voix, beaucoup de potentiel, mais rien d'accrocheur. 4/10

Chill folksy album. Country

The best version of something I don't like Although it's all covers? So what are we really doing here? For No One is beautiful Maybe a 3. Not important

This was fine. Voice was good, I didn't care much about the songs themselves though. Overall, it was fine.

It's always nice when Emmylou shows up to like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or the Grammys to do some tribute cause he voice is great. This album is fine. I dunno, I'm just not really a country guy.

She has a really nice voice and I wish more albums had covers in the middle

Good singer all around Good music But nothing amazing its a good album objectively but never a 5 star one

Not a fan on country music or twang, but given that it was an alright album. She has a nice voice and it was calm music.

Pretty good. Not really my thing but I can't deny the quality of playing and songwriting. Excellent cover of For No One by The Beatles.

I came really close to really liking Pieces of the Sky, but it just didn't land. Front to back it's super tight, textbook country album. It had a lot of moments I liked, but as a whole it kinda washed over me. I think her voice was too clean and pure for me. It's a great voice for this style, but I want more whiskey and cigarettes in my country singers. Album cover: (B+) Thats about as 1970's as its possible to look (i.e brown)

I enjoyed this album. I loved the opening song "Bluebird Wine", it had me tapping my foot. She has an awesome vocal performance. It's got big country band vibes and I love that. The album changes after that song and finds a much slower paced country singer-songwriter sound. I don't like that nearly as much and I got a little bored. She has a beautiful voice, but I can only hear soft instrumentals with a lady singing for so long. 6/10

Listened Before? N One of the greatest voices in country of all time. This album is too mellow for me but I really did like listening to her. Probably won't revisit this one. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Bluebird Wine

Not a huge fan of country music , but her voice is great. No songs stand out, but nothing is bad either. Overall a good album. 3/5 Probably won’t listen again

Ihgstiege is album bin na recht fröhlich und ha mi uf neui artist entdecke gfreut aber isch denn doch sehr eitönig cöntry lastig wurde. Hype isch verfloge. Aber neduzen isch wiedermal desperate zum öpis schlechts oder öpis guets z becho. So dasi wiedermal e idee für es guet review han. 3 himmelstück vu mir

Classic country album. Very easy to listen too. Good album. You'll probably rate it higher if you love old school Country. Check out her cover for the Beatles' "For No One". It's pretty amazing and totally different from the original.

I love her voice, always have. A friend met her years ago and she is as genuine as they come. Most of the album is flat for me, but really enjoyed 3 of the songs.

#426. This is pretty good, but honestly it's just not for me. The talent is there, but it's just not something I desire to listen to. It definitely sounds like she's trying real hard to sound like Dolly Parton, and I don't know if that's intentional, but I suspect it is since there's a Parton cover on the album. 3/5: decent

pretty voice

1001 Albums #14 Good but not really my thing Boulder to birmingham is great though

It's good but not my taste. I only like one song: for no one.

Bit too country for me, but great voice. Favourite track: Too Far Gone.

That is the country music that I love.

Surprisingly forgettable. I quite enjoyed her much later album Red Dirt Girl but there's nothing here but a solid country voice. Boring arrangements lacking any sort of oomph. Coat of Many Colors is a great example. Dolly delivered that with such charm and you couldn't help but listen. Emmylou doesn't make it her own and makes it ho hum. Still gets a 3 because of that great voice.

Country. Favorite tracks: Too Far Gone, Boulder to Birmingham.

Nice sleepo pill. „For No One“ is a timeless beauty

Rating: 6/10 Pretty good but overall pretty forgettable.

Enjoyed the album. Standout songs Bluebird wine Coat of many colors Queen of the silver dollar

Once again I had the artist pegged in a genre that didn't match. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would initially. Based on other albums in this list from the period, there was a strong traditional country/roots movement going on.

I have never heard of Emmylou before this. I immediately thought of Dolly Parton when I heard her, not sure if that will go down well with fans. Enjoyed the album👍👍

Love 'Coat of many colours' but prefer Dolly singing it.

There are a few misses here, but not many! When it hits it hits and it’s usually a cover (re: queen of the silver dollar, the bottle let me down, coat of many colors), but she kills it.

In her late 20s and already having been a key ingredient in the two masterful Gram Parsons solo albums - this debut is confident and well executed in every way. The playing. Song choices. That voice. She would continue to evolve and change in the years to come but this album established her as a masterful interpreter of a wide range of songs.

3.5/5. Nice, easy going folk/country music. This is a good morning listen.

I’m don’t listen to much country but there is a sweet plaintiveness to this album that I enjoy. It turns a little saccharine after a few tracks. But Harris’ voice is amazing.

nice but not for me 3

Bonito. Country tranquilo.

Sort of lovely but it's mainly covers. The Beatles cover is outstanding though.

Gemütlicher Country, irgendwie mag ich ihn. Gut als Hintergrund.

Boulder To Birmingham stands out. The rest of the album contains lots of covers and is really country, not my favourite genre.

Prachtige stem.

This is nice. To me it's almost indistinguishable from the Dolly album. I think I like Dolly's voice a little better, and of course Ms. Harris ripped off one of her songs. But it's a pleasant listen.

Good album but not exactly what I like in country music. Maybe I’m too European to understand it

I kind of like Bluebird Wine, If I Could Only Win Your Love; I almost like The Bottle Let Me Down, Queen of the Silver Dollar

Quite a pleasant listen

I wanted more from this album. The songs were good, but not memorable. It had the makings of a solid 4, but I got exhausted with it. The last couple songs aren’t great, although most of the first half is very good. Some of the Parsons magic rubbed off on Harris, but maybe not quite enough.

Probably not the wisest idea to listen to this album at 6am on a wednesday morning, really depressing.

I forgot most of this almost as soon as I heard it, which isn’t really Emmylou Harris’ fault, I’ve been ill the past couple of days and so my attention span’s been pretty dog shit. That being said, I’m sure the fact that I remember 90% of the songs being slightly boring ballads isn’t working in it’s favour. I like a good Country Ballad as much as the next sad alcoholic, but I try and vary my sad alcoholic listening experiences, cos there’s plenty of other good drinking music from other genres, and anyway, this doesn’t strike me as that kind of Country album in the first place. I dunno, it might grown on me, and Harris’ voice itself is great, but after a first listen, I’m not sure if i’ll actually listen again

This was an interesting album and I’m glad we had it because I would honestly never pick it out myself but it was a great new genre to listen to and it really wasn’t bad. I feel like I wouldn’t pick it out again but it was nice to have an introduction

I can absolutely appreciate her talent, but not something I'd listen to unprompted.

I just can’t do most country music. I’ve tried The warbling Southern tone to her voice is mildly annoying to me and I find the music quite bland. It doesn’t hold my interest for a full album. Want to give this 2.5.

Very nicely recorded. And I like the album cover. Country just sounds like country to me

Du country bien correct, je sais pas trop quoi dire. Ce n'est toujours pas mon style mais j'aime quand même mieux que bien des trucs modernes. 6/10

One of the three singers from the Trio album. What I expected, similar to that album.

5/10 - I feel like I have overrated almost every album of this style. Sometimes it hits sure, but every time I get one of the songs from a country album like this I want to skip it. It feels right when listening to the whole album but when I am not forced to listen to it, it does not work as well.

Some solid country

Well done but not my style.

She has a nice voice.

Sweet, pleasant, harmless

It's well produced and easy listening. I don't dislike it, but wouldn't listen for enjoyment.

There is a purity of song with country music and Harris is a pure singer

Not my style at all, but Emmylou is a legend for a reason. That's quite the voice.

Cool 70s songbird country - some cracking tunes and some less cracking

Slightly boring record from the law firm Emmy, Lou, and Harris, but the cover of 'For No One' was beautiful.

Emmylou Harris’ vocals are hauntingly beautiful. I’m just not that interested in this style of country.

Pretty, pleasant, but bland

Bonito. Country tranquilo.

I’m still not a country fan. But I disliked this a lot less than other country.

I normally like a bit of country but this was a bit grateing. Covers didn’t even do it for me. Emmylou’s voice and the instrumentals were nice…but this just did not hit the mark for me 2.5

That is Emmylou

6 / 10 Country sin más, bonita voz de la cantante.

twang time

Never heard any of this - very pretty voice. Definitely a talent. It’s a fine album nothing worth revisiting.

3/5. A beautiful voice and some nice arrangements of some well-known songs. Simple instrumentation, and slow trailing vocals, this one can sometimes drag but if you stop and smell the flowers, there is beauty in its simplicity. The main issue is that it can be too slow to keep focus. It's doesn't have to be rock, but some variety in the songs can benefit the album as a whole. Maybe on subsequent listens it could grow on me. Best Song: If Only I Could Win Your Love, Sleepless Nights, For No One

Cozy and upbeat.

Not bad, also not really my thing.

It’s ok

Beatles cover was nice

Some of the sounds on this record are revolutionary

Great voice, nice tunes - I just don't like country music. I don't actively dislike this - it's a pleasant noise: good songs, beautifully sung - it's just not my genre. If this is your genre, then Emmylou is top notch.

standard, but very good, country. her version of Dolly's Coat of Many Colours isn't as good, but Boulder to Birmingham is a cracker. The sort of thing my dad and grandad would have loved

Beautiful voice, countries not my thing

Tää on tätä ihan jees osastoa myös! Taustalla menee mutta en rakastunut. 3/5

Toimii taustalla hyvin

Ihan kelpo kantrilevy tämäkin. Coat of Many Colors on kuultu useiden esittämänä, ja hieno kappale on kyllä yhä.

Not bad for a country album. Definitely found myself gravitating towards the folk songs over the more country sounding songs. Not a whole lot to say, the folk songs were good, the country songs were generic and forgettable. Top tracks: Too Far Gone, If I Could Only Win Your Love, Sleepless Nights

Nice but fairly predictable country, enjoyable listen. Couple songs I liked a lot, a few I didn’t like. Down the middle, 3/5

Mietin miksi kaipaan tätä kuunnellessani Dolly Partonia, mutta Coat of many colorshan sen teki. Toisaalta pidän tästä vielä hieman Dollya hienovaraisemmasta tulkinnasta. Todella kivaa kesämusiikkia.

Gorgeous voice and a gorgeous guitar. The cover of For No One was especially cool.

Solid chill country album. Not something I see myself going back to all that much. Favorite songs were Bluebird Wine, If I Could Only Win Your Love, Coat Of Many Colors, and Queen of The Silver Dollar

Country is not typically my forte, but this project has gotten me to come around to it, mainly because of records like this one. Classic country has such a pleasant affect on my ears and with vocals like Emmylou’s, it’s easy to melt into her soothing harmonies atop gentle guitar melodies. Her writing is both somber and inspirational and leaves me wanting more. Great album.

Sad cowgirl music.

bluebird wine? i'll stick to the red thanks

Lots of good songs. I like them more when others have them covered. Credit where credit is due. She’s a damn fine writer.

Great singer/ guitarist, unique country voice. Had some great success, and remains a fan favorite.

interesting country album, definitely captured the "classic" sound.

Good onl fashion country music. Here a lot of current country in this album

I just struggle with this genre. This sounds like a woman singing with a little girls voice. I knew guys that felt mad respect for her and Ronstadt back in the 70s but it just didn't make sense to me. I don't have peace in my soul that resonates with this. 3 stars out of respect tho.

good chill country with great vocals

This is a beautiful album! I hadn't heard of Emmylou Harris, but I feel I should have! She sounded like a cross between Dolly Parton and Olivia Newton John! I'm not useally a fan of Beatles covers, but her version of 'For No One' gets an exception as her voice takes it to a different level!

Emmylou is not someone I had come across before and makes me questions my general dislike of country - maybe I just like floaty , folksy country? This was really nice

Great voice, solid performances, OK songs. The sappy 70s soft rock production makes this hard to listen to in some places.

Country und Western Album mit sympathischer Frauenstimme. Man fühlt sich mitten nach Cheyenne versetzt wo an einem Lauen Sommerabend Musik auf der Marktplatzbühne spielt. Die Songs sind gut interessant arrangiert. Gut sind „Boulder To Birmingham“, das Beatles Cover „For No One“ und als typischer Country-Song „Queen Of The Dollar”.

Bonito. Country tranquilo.

nice enough bit of country tho she is no Dolly

Not awful for country

Country has a very hard ceiling with me, but this is still one I can appreciate. The honesty and power in songwriting is very apparent, and there is still a clear treatment of the blues that I enjoy. Favorite track: Coat of Many Colors

I like her voice

Album 389 of 1001 Emmylou Harris - Pieces Of The Sky Rating : 3.5 / 5 A visit back to the country music I enjoy. Beautiful voice.

It was fine

Not a country fan but this is ok.

Another quite nice but uninteresting country album

3.08 per track. Good classic country!

Simplistic and lame country music. Must have had some worth at the time i suppose, but not now. Great voice though! 2.5/5

When Emmylou is singing the slow songs, her voice is fantastic. Then the super country twang songs take me out. A very mixed album I wish I could give a 2.5 insteads of a 3.

Emma Lou Harris’s voice is liltingly beautiful. The track Before Believing made me stop and watch the sunrise for a few minutes. The Dolly Parton cover of Coat of Many Colors could have been her original. The Eddy Vedder Ukulele cover Sleepless nights (I know… other way around) was so personal, which I have to credit to her: her honesty drives her music to greatness. I may go vinyl hunting for this one.

This sounded great. Not really the kind of music I dig. But she did cover the Beatles, so she’s cool with me.

It's fine, but probably not coming back to this one.

boring. low 6/10

Another country album. Better than most and Emmylou Harris is an accomplished singer but not more than 3 stars unfortunately

This was pretty good. I hadn't listened to her before but it was nice.

Really good folk/country album from a legend. Her voice is a a treasure and the lyrics beyond great, some songs werent as memorable as others for me but but the ones that stuck out were phenomenal.

She has a lovely voice and is just smooth

Hank and Lefty, or the cover of For No One probably my favourites. I don't naturally gravitate to this type of country, but can still appreciate the beauty of this album

Musically, it was fine. But it just didn't click with me. I like country sometimes, but in this case I just missed a little something. Nevertheless, it's not a bad album

Yeah I just have a hard time caring about country music, but this was fine

It was okay.

Such a gentle voice, that southern lick also helps in her music imo. 3.0

Absolutely love her voice but this album has one song written by her and the rest are covers. Solid 4 if she wrote the songs, but the karaoke factor brings it down to a 3.

Before starting this journey, I always said I hated certain genres. Country, Rap, Hip Hop, and the like. But I’m realizing now that I really don’t dislike them as much as I once thought. This is a great country album. My biggest shock, though, is that the Beatles cover isn’t even in my top 3. I was once practically a Beatles superfan, so that says a lot about this album. Also nice to see a cover from my favourite country album so far, Coat of Many Colors. 7/10 Top 3: 1. Too Far Gone 2. Boulder to Birmingham 3. Coat of Many Colors

I used to assume I didn't like country music but I now realise that was a blinkered kind of inverse bigotry. This is pretty great. Still not giving top marks as I'm unlikely to reach for it (I tend towards British folk if I'm looking to scratch a trad. itch) but I did find it a very enjoyable listen.

Honestly, didn't expect to like a country album this much.

That Beatles song snuck up on me. I always preferred old Hank Williams country (though still too twangy for me overall). Very solid album that nods to HW and nails the ballads.

I don't remember listening intentionally to Emmylou Harris before, but I know I've heard her music. I enjoyed this album - more than most country music I've heard. I loved the fiddle (or whatever those strings were) at the end of Bluebird Wine. If I Could Only Win Your Love was the biggest hit single from the album and was also one of my favorites. Other highlights were Before Believing, Coat of Many Colors and For No One (a cover of a Beatles song). I didn't enjoy Bottle Let Me Down or Queen of the Silver Dollar as much.

I was hot and cold on this one. The standout tracks (the opening, for no one cover and a couple of others) were stellar. The rest felt like fairly standard country-fare to me (though I'm not an expert!)

sooo fun i love country folk ballads <3 3.5/5

Favourite Song: Too Far Gone

I don't like modern country and this is how country should be.

Fin röst och fina melodier. Tyckte om det här för det mesta

Really want to try some Bluebird wine.

I would actually listen to country music if it sounded like this. BRING BACK 60s AND 70s FOLK YOU COWARDS

A few bangers including Blueberry Wine. The rest is good, but a touch slow for me.

Decent songs and arrangements. Lovely voice. Country vibes.

Amazing voice but overall was just an ok album.

A little twangy for my tastes, but some nice harmonies. I really liked the cover of the Beatles “For No One.”

It's not my usual style, but I enjoyed a few of the folky country songs. She has an amazing voice and some of the songs were quite powerful. Some songs reminded me of Joni Mitchell. The second half of the album was solid, especially coat of many colours, queen of the Silver Dollar and a beautiful cover of For No One 1st listen 3.5

Harris has a great voice and it's a perfectly fine album but not a very distinctive one and it suffers from too many slow numbers.

I really love Emmylou Harris, generally, but I feel like this album lacks a solid impact for me, at this point. There are some great songs, but many of them feel dated and not as relevant. I feel her later work holds up better, personally. Again, as an artist, she is a legend, and I'm happy to have listened to this album, but I'm not sure this is the album I'd go back to for her.

Best song - Bluebird Wine

Coat of many colours was a good cover, put Dolly is hard to beat. Overall good album

Important country record, I can see how this record influenced future groups like Big Thief. Very melancholic. Great instrumentation and production. The standout track for me was Boulder to Birmingham. What a banger.

Country music has pretty much passed me by - apart from the times I've been doing road trips in the US midwest when it's been the only genre available on the radio. I do love this game for making me listen to things that I wouldn't otherwise. Track to listen to again - For No One is beautiful.

Nice to have a good Emmylou Harris album after the disappointment of Red Dirt Girl. A voice that works best in harmonies, a style that works best with a bigger band. Originality isn't the most important thing. is the change in country-folk style in the 2000s (3-4 instruments recorded in isolation with overdubbed vocals, as on Red Dirt Girl) a metaphor for the hyper-hyper-individualism & isolation of the modern era? perhaps! perhaps. music: appreciated. (⌐❀_❀)

1001 Emmylou albums to hear before you die. Like this one considerably more than the early 2000s one we got a while back. Same voice, just a production difference I guess.

Her voice creates a main player in a cast of well thought out country and cover compositions that allow room to see her full potential. She’s versatile but also tends to stay in her lane on this album but you can see the stretching of her legs as something outside of pure country.

3/5 - an enjoyable album

Not a big fan of country, but I found this enjoyable to listen to and it seems like she’s one of the pioneers.

Like the Willie Nelson album, country isn’t my kind of thing, but it’s also not music that I actively dislike. This album, like red headed stranger, is just really chill and nice as background music, makes me feel like I’m walking the prairie on a horse, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it. None of the songs really stood out though, so it’s hard to say any of the songs were particularly good. 3.5/5

Not usually a country music fan, but this is classic country music. Really soulful and emotional. A little slow for my liking, but still a really solid album. Love the instrumentals. Favorite songs - Bluebird Wine (sounds so much like Dolly), Boulder to Birmingham, Hank and Lefty.

This was fine. It reminded me of something my grandpa would listen to in the background, which is not a bad thing.

The sounds of a classic country Belle not unlike the sound of Dolly Parton, of which she had completed a cover of Coat of Many Colours. Pieces Of The Sky is wholly inoffensive and has the feel of "good ol' country music - the way it should be" without being too over the top. Definitely one of the more bearable country albums I have listened to thus far. Best: If Only I Could Win Your Love Worst: Boulder To Birmingham

Very smoothing voice to listen to. Never usually one for country music I had time to kill waiting on an MOT and service. Being completely unfamiliar with country music bar the popular songs that everyone knows, I was finding myself tapping my foot or bobbing my head along to the music. Bottle Let Me Down and Queen of the Silver Dollar were my highlights from this album.

A decent folk country album. Nothing too amazing and most of the songs were fine. The biggest standout of this was Harris’ voice and the well written songs. This was made back when artists had to be actually talented and that’s why Harris does a good job. The style of album is one that I would most likely not revisit as I prefer other country but I do think it is good. 6.2/10

A very nice traditional country album. Not my favorite genre but the quality of the songs, vocal performance and production is undeniable. 3.5 stars

Not that big into country but this was definitely one of the better proponents of the genre, Emmylou Harris' voice is wonderful and the songs are well written

Bonito. Country tranquilo.

I liked it at the time and it’s aged well

Emmylou Harris obviously has an excellent voice and this is obviously a great straight country record. Enjoyable listen for sure.

Dolly Parton influence

Enjoyable, great voice

A little bluegrass, gospel influence. Incredibly powerful voice. Not entirely my cup of tea, but it was nice having on. Favorite tracks: "Boulder to Birmingham", "Bottle Let Me Down"

Not my usual type of music, but very pretty. Easy on the ears!

Overall I am glad I listened to this album. It is very pretty sounding, Emmylou has a timeless voice, and this album sits solidly in the type of country I find palatable. However, it is too twangy for me at points, songs kind of blend together, and some songs are just tooo slow for my personal preference. I think it’s definitely worthy of a listen through for anyone who enjoys music from the 70s. 6/10

Pieces of the Sky is the second album and commercial breakthrough by American country music artist Emmylou Harris. This country album features an eclectic assortment of song styles that appealed to Emmylou, including various covers of popular songs like "Too Far Gone," "The Bottle Let Me Down," "For No One," and "Coat of Many Colors". This is a beautiful album from a talented singer. The album's tracks do a great job of making the listener feel different things while you get swept away by the soothing music. Glad I had the chance to listen to this album.

B- Bluebird Wine 3 Too Far Gone 4 If I Could Only Win Your Love (with Herb Pedersen) 3 Boulder to Birmingham 3 Before Believing 2 The Bottle Let Me Down 3 Sleepless Nights 3 Coat of Many Colors 2 For No One 4 Queen of the Silver Dollar 3 Emmylou Harris with an absolute revenge game. Her album from 2000 was horrendous. I was not a fan. However, she totally redeemed herself here. This was great. Although, I am much more a fan of 1970's country than more modern country, so it makes sense.

A consistent, loving album from Emmylolu Harris. Rings with all of the classic old country tones you'd want but with her own spin on it. The covers were especially interesting

I gave more than one star to a country album. The world's gone topsy-turvy

Qué chulada de voz, pero hasta ahí.

A solid listen but Emmylou Harris can't keep me with her voice for the length of an album.

Good album overall, I definitely recognised the "Toy story" vibes. Not sure I'll get back to it though

Ia aight, good voice, the country songs meh

Pretty standard progressive country album, but all in all I really enjoyed it!

Above average country. Standouts: Too Far Gone, If I Could Only Win Your Love, Coat of Many Colors, For No One. 3/5

I typically don't go for the more folksy style of country, but I found myself really liking this one. My thing will always be on the use of instrumentals, and Emmylou nailed them here. All of them were interesting uses in the background, and they paired with her voice very well. Favorite track: Queen of the Silver Dollar

not bad, but not alot of relisten in there for me

Didn’t love but didn’t mind having it on. A solid 3

Getting some more country music, always glad to see an album pop up on here that isn't from a genre i'm as familiar with. I love her voice, songs like the Beatles cover and the closing track Queen of the Silver Dollar are great listens. Will probably end up coming back to this in the future for some more listens because I had fun. Hoping there's still more to come on this list that'll help me expand my tastes.

Niet veel specialer dan andere country albums

Nice vocals

Not bad 3

good stuff. Will explore more.

Beautifully produced country pop, soaked in reverb. Really pristine sound. Emmylou Harris has a gorgeous voice. When she holds out a note, it sounds so clean. So strong. “Bluebird Wine” is a clear standout for me. It’s got real power to it. I love that forceful country style. I wish there were a few more peppy tunes like this but hey, maybe that’s jus another album. “Bottle Let Me Down” is fun too. The Beatles cover “For No One” has some incredible guitar on it. “Before Believing” is beautiful. I love these lyrics: “How would you feel if the world Was falling apart around you Pieces of the sky were falling In your neighbor's yard but not on you Wouldn't you feel just a little bit funny, Think maybe there's something you ought to do?”

She's got a beautiful voice and the music compliments it well. The record doesn't blow me away but it's definitely not bad either. I think it's a pretty middle of the road 3/5, which totally isn't a bad thing for this list. I think a lot of singer-songwriters that I like have been influenced by her sound and I appreciate that.

1st track probably everything I still don't like about country, come on good ol' boys, slap your thighs down at the hoedown. Similar with Bottle let me down. I've started to really like some country, but I don't like that. Gorgeous voice, obviously. I can't argue with Boulder to Birmingham, lovely song. There are several more objectively beautiful songs. Beautifully done, not for me really, overall.

3.5 stars. 70's Country Western that is carried by Harris's beautiful voice.

Amazing voice with very decent songs

Kinda sounds like Doll. Turns out she covered one of Dolly's songs. This is ok I guess. Not terrible, but not super good or interesting. A low 3/5

Very country, great voice.

A decent singer-songwriterish country effort. Not entirely wowed on the songwriting front (I’d already heard Dolly do ‘Coat of Many Colors’ much more justice a few albums ago), but the vocals were pleasing and the instrumentals well done.

Very repetitive genre

3 Emmylou!! Ok, admittedly, I’ve never listened to any of her personal work, but she was featured on a few tracks from one of my all-time favorite albums, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning by Bright Eyes. Her voice pairs beautifully with Conor’s music and adds so much to the album, especially on the track We Are Nowhere and It’s Now, which is not only my favorite song from I’m Wide Awake, but also what I would consider one of the greatest songs ever written. Anyway, we’re not here to talk about Bright Eyes, but all that to say I had a very high regard towards Emmylou coming into this because of them. And I gotta say, she sounds as great as I could have hoped for here, but musically… I mean, I wasn’t expecting it to sound like the work of a sad Nebraskan indie icon, but yeah this is pretty standard country fare. The slower stuff is the better stuff here (mostly because it highlights her vocal performance), with Boulder to Birmingham being by far and away my favorite song on the album - the ballad-like nature of the song is something I feel is so much better suited for her chops than something like Bottle Let Me Down. Speaking of which, I gave myself a pat on the back for recognizing it as a Merle Haggard cover, a connection I would have never made in a million years if not for this list… and then I proceeded to completely miss The Beatles cover three songs later. So, that prompted me to take a look into every song here, and as it turns out, they’re all covers except for one… Yep, it’s Boulder to Birmingham. I really hope the success of that song gave her the confidence to start recording more of her own original compositions, because if so, I’ll definitely be giving a listen - maybe it was a fluke, but it’s by far the best moment of the album. Though hell, even if her other work is just more basic classical country, I’d still give a listen - it’s hard to find something to hate with a voice like hers. Now that being said, I’m going to go listen to some Bright Eyes.

emmylou harris, containing a first name worthy of any country star, has a sweet voice that's particularly perfect for these tender songs on pieces of the sky. "far too gone" is a great example of this. it's already a beautiful song, but something about harris' voice knocks her songs up a notch. that song with the only single, "if i could only win your love," are the stand outs. the rest of the album could be a little lackluster in comparison, but her voice makes the album enjoyable in the long run. and linda ronstadt providing backing vocals on "queen of the silver dollar" (containing cute lyrics by shel silverstein) is the icing on top of the cake! 3.5

Emmylou Harris did not have as "easy" of a start as some other female country artists, but this album really cemented her place in country music legend history, and it's understandable why. This album is a very pleasant listen with a lot of dynamic and range shown on Emmylou's part. Her voice is really allowed to soar on this album, showing her off as being in league with the best of the country classic divas, all while still being her own thing. My favorites from the album were probably "Bluebird Wine", "If I Could Only Win Your Love", and "Boulder to Birmingham". Each, in my opinion, probably showcase Emmylou's talents the best on this already very solid album. And I will add that her cover of "Coat of Many Colors" does Dolly Parton justice, for sure. If country music is to be represented on this project (and it should be), Emmylou Harris is an excellent contribution. Her path was a bit different than many female country music legends, but her contributions to the genre are still many. She would go on to be an influence for many female country acts to follow. This album is probably around a 3.5 for me.

I still really enjoy Emmylou Harris' vocals, and I actually like country music more than I thought I did, but still not THAT much. She's got a few better songs on this album as well, but not quite cutting it as a higher rating. Again, it gets a bit bland.

It’s kind of pleasant but not for me.

Incredible voice. I get why people like her, but it's just not for me. Every song felt like it had one or two "mistakes" that took me out of the moment. 3.5 stars

Estilo country femenino antiguo. Muy buena voz y, sin duda, para los amantes del género. Escuchable en un ambiente tranquilo

Not to diminish Emmylou’s talent and legacy in any way, but these songs are just a bit too squeaky clean for my taste. Pristine where I prefer my country more scraggly, found, and rough around. But it’s worth a hearing just for history alone, as it finds a young Emmylou climbing back to her feet after the tragic overdose of her singer and friend Gram Parsons just a year earlier. “Boulder to Birmingham” perfectly encapsulates that history and heartbreak, just as it plays to Emmylou’s strengths as an ever-elegant, country-western singer and songwriter. That’s a classic tune. I just don’t care for how clean it sounds.

I'm pretty much exactly with Charlie on this one. Discovered a whole new singer who I had never heard of and fell for her voice hard, she just has this incredible emotional range in her voice. But the background is pretty straight and feels uninspired. Could have been way, way more interesting. But as a vehicle to carry her brand of heartbreak, I think it's great. 3/5

I enjoyed this album more than I thought. I'm not the biggest fan of folk/country, but Emmylou has a gorgeous voice and I really liked her cover of "For No One". I knew I recognized it, but I didn't know from where, and assumed I must have just heard it before. Looked it up just to figure out it was a Beatles tune and that a lot of this album was covers. That's not very common nowadays, but I think it's something that should be explored more. She really made each one her own, they sounded like they belonged to her. That's a quality not many vocalists have.

Not a big fan of country music, but this ain't bad

Better than I though
