좋앗음... 막 꽂히진 않았던거같기도..근데중간에좋은트랙이있었다

4⭐️/5 [02.28.2026] 03.02.2026

Listened to it a few times. I'm finding that I like The Flaming Lips.

Przesłuchałam połowę i jak na razie, wybiła się dla mnie jedna piosenka, a reszta jest przyjemna do puszczenia w tle. Mam wrażenie, że cały album taki jest. Przyjemny do puszczenia w tle. Jak będę miała ochotę to przesłucham resztę i zobaczymy czy jeszcze jakaś inna piosenka bardziej mi siądzie.

Wow. This has a very relaxed vibe

The Flaming Lips are still putting out cool, unusual albums and experimenting with new sounds. They’ve stayed creative and unpredictable decades into their career.

Stærk neo psychedelia pop som er meget orkestralt men uden orkestret

Instrumentally very good, vocally not so. It will be sold as "emotional" and "real" but meh. Still enjoyable 4/5

Great Songs: Waitin' for a Superman, Suddenly Everything Has Changed Good Songs: Race for the Prize, A Spoonful Weighs a Ton, The Spark That Bled, The Spiderbite Song, What Is the Light?, The Observer, Feeling Yourself Disintegrate, Sleeping On the Roof, Waitin' for a Superman Mid Songs: Buggin' (Mokran Mix), The Gash, Race for the Prize (Mokran Mix) Bad Songs:

all their songs kind of sound the same but it’s a good sound so I don’t mind

Love this album ❤️

weird but good weird

I really enjoyed the style of the album

This is a tough one for me. The opening track of this album is incredible, and there are a few killer tracks sprinkled throughout like The Spark That Bled, but for every great track there's 1 or 2 medicore to bad tracks as well (Waiting for Superman, etc.) I'm right between a 3 and a 4 on this one, so need to decide if I'm going to round up or down.

Weird as is expected. I liked most of it

385/1089 - I remember not really getting into this when I first listened to it. For the record, I love Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. I'm gonna give it another try and see how it is: I do like the instrumentation and songs but I think the singer sounds kinda scared and constipated overall. The Mokran mixes fixed a lot of this and I think he has certain effects in Yoshimi which mitigate this as well.

I liked the vibe quite a lot.

I thought this was really good. I wish Wayne Coyne wasn’t so annoying. He seems likes he’s probably an alright guy, but he really annoys me for some reason.

вообще ничего от них не ожидала (не помню какую песню их знаю но значит она не впечатлила), а тут такой протоинди ещё и на позитиве. хорошие! надо будет потом всё проверить

Strong early 00s indie rock vibes. Reminds me of the Long Winters - who were probably inspired by this music.

Vocals are a little week but overall a very interesting album

I like Yoshimi better but there's some good stuff here

I really like this album, and thought I knew it better than I did. But I find it hard to give it a 5. The first three tracks, Waiting for a Superman and What Is the Light? are all majestic, and the atmosphere carries across the album. I also never quite realised how much Wayne Coyne sounds like Neil Young. But this is the highest of 4s for me.

The flaming lips have a very unique sound. The second you hear them you know it's them playing. And it's a good sound, really suits the music they play, feels quite euphoric and backs up their story telling narratives. This album starts great with a few great tracks, race for the prize being the pick of the bunch. Unfortunately it was very much one of those albums were the start was great and it tailed off. The rest wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly great and compared to the start it probably felt worse than it was. The mix was weird, listening on headphones the drums were way out on the right in all the tracks, that was a bit disconcerting, sounded good on speakers though, so maybe that was the whole intention. His singing voice is odd. I'm not actually sure he's very good at it, his voice seems to be cracking on every line, but then it does fit in with the sound of the band really nicely, so it's kind of genius in a way. I'm giving this a 4, but it's just a shame that the album tracks were so top heavy.

Must have been an influence for the indie-pop stuff that came later 00s like MGMT and Passion Pit. Each song felt original.

Bizarre album, very weird dudes. Great at putting you in the middle of a story that almost makes sense

4.2/5 rly psychedelic cool sounds on this and good songwriting

Im starting to really like this genre of music. Its calming in a way that relaxes you but doesn't put you to sleep. This album is a great example of that.

like lowkey freeing

I really enjoy the flaming lips, good album

I was not previously familiar with this album, although I do know other Flaming Lips material. This album is quite experimental and sounds similar to Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots which I was already familiar with. It has a lot of the same sort of things, catchy hooks, lush sounds, and unconventional use of distortion. It almost feels like a companion album. Given how much I like Yoshimi, this album was a nice find. I would listen again for sure.

I don’t know if I’ve listened to this from cover to cover, but what a ride

Solid but Yosemite is a way better album. 7/10

First time hearing this record; The Flaming Lips is one of those bands that I've heard on the radio periodically but never grabbed my attention enough to get me to buy one of their records. The music on this album is interesting - unexpectedly symphonic. A couple tracks struck me as a little too sweet-sounding, but I can see how repeated listens could make them work in context with the rest of it. The singer has an interesting voice that sounds a lot like Neil Young to me - but it's like Neil Young did some kind of multi-year ecstatic retreat and then stumbled out into the light, inspired to have a completely different kind of sound. 4/5 that could convert to 5/5 after listening to it some more

This is kinda what I thought Yoshimi was gonna be. Peak lips? They got so annoying and up their own asses live by the time I saw them in the 2020's, but I could see it all being pretty glorious in their prime.

A record with a deep, layered sound. Well-written, well-produced songs. The only problems for me are that the songs all seem to hit a similar tone, and the vocalist sounds unserious and kinda sarcastic ghe entire time.

It's... noise pop? It's oddly enjoyable, but... a weird album.

Charming, off-kilter, just the right amount of wackiness. "Race for the Prize" still makes me smile after all these years. "Waiting for Superman" moves me every time I hear it. Overall, a really memorable record, though at times, even if a little too twee and brittle to make it one of my all-time favorite albums.

The Flaming Lips's albums are cases where the sum is greater than its parts -- not all the tracks are impressionable, but enjoyable enough to highlight and elevate the focal songs.

I feel like I should really love the Flaming Lips more than I actually do - they've always been around the periphery of a lot of music I like, and maybe had I been listening to this when I was younger I would have really gotten into it. I really liked this album but I wasn't in love with it. The songs were really great and I like something that leans a little into how bombastic it is. Very solid album.

I actually think I like this better than Yoshimi

Very listenable but not as good as the albums that followed it imo.

I was not that impressed at first but as I listened further it improved quite a bit. 4 stars or B.

I don't even know. But I like it.

No private session used for Spotify. This is the first The Flaming Lips I got into. I remember struggling with the lead singer's voice and I still kind of feel that, but there is some great music on it and a few outstanding tracks.

Great modern psychedelic rock. I liked the pink robots more but this is quite good. “When you got that spider bite on your hand / I thought we’d have to break up the band” - lolz!

hm. wanted to like it more, but considering so many meh offerings on this list, i'll bump up my rating a little bit for something funky. some really nice songs on here. some that i'm less enthusiastic about. but overall a fun warbly weird time!

Much of what I said about 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots' also applies to 'The Soft Bulletin', although the latter may be the tighter album of the two. While I still can't get into Wayne Coyne's voice, the density of The Flaming Lips sound is still incredibly appreciated here. There's plenty going on: guitars, synths, strings, custom percussion, electronics: that you cant help but hold immense respect for the band's ability as producers and arrangers. This album marked a departure from the band's guitar-heavy alternative rock sound into something more layered and experimental and most critics consider this to be where The Flaming Lips truly found their sound. I can see why. I hear plenty of confidence in this album's direction, and it came at the right time where popular music was beginning to shift away from noisy guitars towards more lo-fi, experimental sounds. I feel like The Flaming Lips is a band best enjoyed by people with a passionate interest in sound production and nuanced creativity. They certainly have an unmistakeable sound and always look to push the envelope, and I can't help but commend their fearlessness and genre-bending ways. Best songs: Race For the Prize, The Spark that Bled, Buggin', Waitin' For a Superman

Great bunch of lads

Fully great, maybe better than Yoshimi? I'll absolutely listen to this again no sweat

Enjoyed this. I like these lads. Simpsons: No

I liked it. Not as much as Robots but I also had a little bit of an expectation. Still, it’s creative and unique but can trend a bit bland at times.

Honestly, I didn't expect to like this album very much, but it's a really interesting album that gets better as it goes on (or as you get used to it). Lots of batshit insane lyrics, but also a lot of really interesting sounds and layering of sounds. I don't necessarily think this will be an album I reach for very often, but I enjoyed it. 4.5 stars.

489/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

This band has a distinctive atmosphere to them; both of their albums on this list are psychedelic indie/alt rock efforts. This is slightly noisier and more organic sounding than Yoshimi, but it still creates an atmosphere. Lyricism isn't the greatest, but it's mostly passable. Musically, it combines thundering rock drums with psychedelic guitar and mediocre vocals. Are they the best band on the list? Not even close. Are they still good with a distinct sonic identity? Yes. Something about their atmospheric, psychedelic sounds resonates with me, and they're probably one of my favorite bands discovered here.

Banger

Beautiful record.

Despite the fact that I've listened to Yoshimi many times, I'd never got round to listening to this. I'm glad I did, I like it a lot. Maybe not quite as much as Yoshimi, but that's probably familiarity.

Indie electro psychedelic rock with John Bonham on drums. Still not sure about Wayne Coyne's voice. 3.6

went full sunny and listened to this with a a cadbury selection box and an afternoon darjeeling

I enjoyed this album, didn't realise until after listening it was as old as 1999 - it sounds like it could be a 2010s album.

Easy to see why this was popular with the festival set. Probably wonderful when you’re young and tripping on acid with 50,000 of your closest friends. 4/5

Always like the flaming lips more than I think I do. Closest to the internal songs of my soul than anything else so far.

I initially thought this album exceedingly average, but grew very much to enjoy it. It's a layered affair with the Lips' idiosyncratic sci-fi production, coupled with 60s-worthy melodies. In fact, stripping away all the (some may say) overdone production, tracks like 'Race for the Prize' have a Motown sensibility. 'The Spark That Bled' has some classic sliding guitar octaves in its final third, like Soul Man or similar. To say this is a warm up for it's superlative successor is unfair, but they certainly refined and perfected the approach on Yoshimi. This comes in close behind.

Not bad. Not for everyone, I'm sure, but it has it's good points. First, his voice can quite often be annoying, but then there is something plaintive and hook-y about it too. Musically, they are trying a bunch of different things and I'm a big fan of experimentation that pays off. It mostly does here. Although I will admit I do like the more guitar-y version of these guys. I mean, keyboards are great instruments, but I don't think they should be the backbone of any production. Overall this is pretty mellow. While I don't think the lyrics are the deepest philosophical insights, they are at least introspective and trying to say something. That's gotta count for something in a world of pop-y love or butt rock, yah? I'm not convinced that it deserved a ton of awards or it's a Must Listen before you die album, but I am glad I heard it a couple of times, now. Will probably listen again sometime. Want to give it a 3.7, but with no particularly annoying bits, let's call it a 4.

I've been meaning to listen to these guys for a while now, and I think it was an interesting intro to them. Saw on wikipedia it was listed as space rock, and I thought it was gonna be something else, but this was still good. Favorites: The Spiderbite Song, Waitin' for a Superman, Feeling Yourself Disintegrate

Just lovely.

Layered, deep and cathartic. “Feeling Yourself Disintegrate” hits you like no other.

I really enjoyed this album, the whole sound and vibe of this album still feels fresh and not that dated. Very cool find.

I should like this more than I do, but I still dig it a good bit. 4/5

It's not Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, but all the pieces are there.

First impression : So I put this on my headphones and after about a minute I was so convinced that my bins were broken that I had to play something I was very familiar with to put my mind at rest. Did they record the opening track in a nissen hut? And who the fuck is that singing? One of the engineers? Second impression: This really isn't that bad at all. I might even quite like it. Quirky Jury's still out on the singing though. 3½

Took a while to get into - work was loud and the songs are quite gentle. Warmed up to it on a second listen and ended up really enjoying it. Doesn’t include my favourite of their songs but still a really good album. I like the storytelling and the vocals and actually really enjoy how gentle it mostly is. Fav song: Feeling Yourself Disintegrate Least fav: The Gash

Was a real struggle to not just compare every song on this album to Do You Realize?? because I do really like this album, but I love that song. Favourite song: The Gash Least: The Spiderbite Song

fucking beautiful this has to be psych rock at some of its best

I've always been intimidated by this band. They're well known, but have dozens of albums. Where do I start?! That's a lie. I do have one. I don't find it that exciting and I was, honestly, expecting a 'more of the same three stars album'. The sort of thing this list is loaded with. But I was really impressed with the opener. And while it never quite hit that peak catchiness again, I can see why this album is on the list. The vocalist's indie-soft Neil Young voice came through quite well on the album. It was a bit of fun. 4 Stars.

OK but why was it nicknamed the Pet Sounds of the 90s

Never really given the band a chance so this was a great album to start with. Lots of variety, lots of depth and an overall fun ride! I originally scored this as a three star album but I just keep going back to it. I’ve listened to it at least five times through now and it is clearly a five star album. The depth and creativity just continues to grow the more you listen to it.

gostosinho, bem vibes

really loved the first couple songs, was chillin with the rest. unique and i have a few songs i will keep, 4!

I like this one better than anything else I have heard from them. Which is enough to have an opinion. Though there doesn’t seem to be a standout track, this album is decent. I also thought I was further along in the album that I actually was. Longer songs than expected. You could do plenty worse things with your time. Whether this is a positive or negative towards them, I can’t really put them into a category. I guess in this day and age they are indie. The problem with that is these guys are too good for the indie scene. Both musically and lyrically.

This album took me a few listens. The songwriting is really strange in a good way but something about it is so dreamy and stream of conscious that it doesn't immediately click. I like they way they balance delicate soft sounds with really aggressive pounding rhythms. This album has a vibe and all the songs flow pretty well together. Almost so well that at times it seems like this album is one long song. I like it more each time I listen to it.

Nice kick drum tone. Reminds me of they might be giants but with more ambience.

In theory, this band should be one of my favourites, but they're not quite there. Maybe if I saw a live show, I'd change my mind. When I'm focusing on the music, I think it's Wayne Coyne's voice that gets to me. I know there's another album in this list and I look forward to listening to it.

Wow - another one that hit me from out of nowhere. Fantastic! Trippy and musically sonic transportative. Love the all around vibe. Me likey! 8.9

I enjoyed this more than expected.

What can I say? I like music like this. Catchy, lil weird, some spacy stuff going on.

It’s easy to see why this album was their breakthrough into the mainstream. Imaginative and experimental instrumentation while maintaining strong and catchy songs.

Dreamy, strange, and wonderful

Pschedelic fun, great songwriting!

Cool juxtaposition of sloppy, loud, bombastic percussion against the soft and airy vocals and strings. Can definitely sense influences from this album on more modern indie rock. Wayne Coyne's pitch can be grating at times, reducing overall listenability

Gooood. I love it, beauty and chill, positive vibes.

Oh hell yes. I don't know if I'd put it over Yoshimi but it's just as good.

Very cool

This is the album where The Flaming Lips finally stopped messing around and became the psych-pop kings their were always destined to be. This was also a new sound for the new millennium. Psychedelic and very detailed, but with big hooks and radio-friendly song structures paired with strange, surreal lyricism. Many other acts either followed this path or came into existence in the wake of this record. Huge change for the band, considering their previous album was made up of 4 discs, all supposed to be played simultaneously. Key tracks: Race for the Prize A Spoonful Weighs a Ton Waitin' for a Superman

Only sooks don't like the lips

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘧𝘵 𝘉𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯 is lush, ambitious, and often breathtaking, with orchestral arrangements and Wayne Coyne’s fragile vocals giving it both grandeur and intimacy. Frequently hailed as a masterpiece, I hear it more as a remarkable step on the way to what many consider their true peak. Still, it’s a beautiful and moving record that defines late-90s alternative.

57/1001 The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ I love the melancholy on this album, along with the arrangements. It's a poignant and beautiful album. It maybe doesn't quite reach the same heights as Yoshimi, but brilliant nonetheless.

I have a lot of goodwill towards The Flaming Lips, due to a combination of Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots and them once releasing a record on vinyl that had four records that had to be played simultaneously for the record to sound right - essentially I have a certain level of tolerance for odd bods (though not Captain Beefheart levels obviously). Race For The Prize is a great song that sets the tone for a record. I like A Spoonful Weighs A Ton, The Spiderbite Song (with the weirdly Phil Collinsesque drum fills), and The Gash. I think this is another 3.5, but good enough to get me to round up, not down. 4/5

not a fan of the intros, the rest goes hard

When I clicked on this I read "Velvet Underground" in my head rather than "Flaming Lips". As a result I was quite surprised at the sound. Once I came to and got over that, I enjoyed this a fair amount. Melodic and poppy with a couple standout tracks ("Waitin' for A Superman" is one). A worthy listen and enjoying more the second time. 3.5 but let’s go 4 side.

tää pli hyvä, tykkäsin paljon

I hadn't listened to this album and was more familiar with Yoshimi. This is a really good album. It's a very strange dichotomy that this album has a Pitchfork rating 10/10, but isn't on the Rolling Stone Top 500. Pitchfork: 10.0 Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs Race for the Prize The Spark That Bled Waitin' for a Superman Feeling Yourself Disintegrate Sleeping On The Roof

As Robert Plant once sang “I don’t know what it is that I like about you, but I like it alot!” That’s how I feel about the Flaming Lips. I’ve liked FL for awhile (off the strength of Yoshimi). But i couldn’t figure out why. Normally i would not like the vocalist’s sound & the songs are at times video game material (or movie about a video game). But now I know: the drummer, the engineer, and their producer make the band special. The drum sound — the tension between the cymbals and bass that makes the mic distort a little— is genius! And then, switching back to a very tight clean drumkit sound, mid-song — amazing! Really catches my ear — I like it… alot! Still, my 4 rating is a mystery to me. On most metrics this would be a 3 or less. But I will definitely play it again — the hallmark of a 4.

Fun songwriting, reminds of of Sufjan Stevens. Influence of his perhaps?

Love this just discovered the group too ! Makes me think about an “old” version of Tame Impala but in the BEST way ever 💋 Never thought I’d be si happily surprised by this tysm

High 3/low 4, not much else to say

Race for the Prize // Suddenly Everything Has Changed // Feeling Yourself Disintegrate // 3.5/5

Didn’t love this quite as much as the first Flaming Lips album we got, but still a solid 4.

Pretty great. Another band with a bunch of great material

Softee

Race for the Prize has one of the ugliest drum intros of all time. MY GOD. Thankfully this recovers. I get Wayne Coyne's voice is pretty Marmite but I like his haunty melodies. Beautifully arranged instrumentals, with a mix of traditional indie rock, synth, and orchestral sounds.

Prettty nice stuff again! I liked the sound of a lot of this. I could see more entering my possible likes on relistens, but I liked a decent bit as is.

I feel like the 90s were when a lot of things clicked for weird neo-psychedelic bands like this, and this album delivers on that in spades.

I did not expect to like this but I really did! Incredible album texture. I love the use of the different instruments and the guitar tones are absolutely luscious. I feel like I discovered a lot on my second listen through and I would easily enjoy this over and over. Fantastic.

7/10 starts really strong but gets really tedious towards the end

I liked this album, but I feel like I need to listen to it a few more times to appreciate it more. Liked Songs Added: Race For The Prize Buggin' Waitin' For A Superman Feeling Yourself Disintegrate

Great early Lips work!

I personally float between a 3 and 3.5 on this, but I'm rounding up to 4, because I do think they are well-crafted songs. However, I mostly find them to not say a lot to me and just float by. They feel almost too perfectly crafted to a sanded down sound that is pleasant enough for a lot of people to like it and not be offensive, but it also doesn't feel like it has a lot to entice me of anything more than that.

Good enough.

I am a fan of them so this album confirms my admiration. Is science rock a genre? A spoonful sounds a ton. Soft bullet, soft bulletin, whatever. Operatic, symphonic, poetic, ick upon interplanetary lick. The title separates music and songs, which makes me focus on the compositional. Which means don't settle back--pay attention.

Fabulous - I’d forgotten how much I love The Flaming Lips. They used to be played in my office a lot in the early 2000s. And then I forgot about them. But they still feel fresh and fun. Race for the prize and Waitin’ for Superman are fantastic. Doesn’t quite hit a 5 but one I will definitely remember to spin it again (maybe).

this surprised me, it went hard, all songs were great, i loved the emotions i felt when listening to it, great instrumentation and the vocalist has a nice unique voice, very good

chill vibe 4 stars

Love the Flaming Lips. A must see live. Enjoyed the album but not my favorite if theirs.

This reaches Owl City levels of twee at certain points, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it.

I really liked the spider song. Listened to these guys back in early 2000's didn't realize they had so many albums.

Listened to this before but will happily listen to it again. The Flaming Lips are a criminally underrated 90s band who deserve a lot more mainstream success in my eyes. This record is so experimental yet so cohesive. Compared to their preceding albums, this is so nicely layered and well mixed, and the songwriting is a lot more emotional and ambitious, with some cheek and wit syphoned in, and it still manages to be easy to follow and natural. It defies a lot of 90s instrumental orthodoxy and has bucketloads of personality and fun to enjoy. Post-punk and pop-punk-coded vocals as well work weirdly as the storytelling of the songs are wailed over these expansive instrumentals.

найс.

It was really chill. I enjoyed listening to it.

Sehr nah an dem, was ich eh höre

This is like a slightly less refined yoshimi, I like this though 4/5

Maybe the only Flaming Lips album that doesn’t sink into self-indulgence.

This was my first time listening to The Flaming Lips. At first I wasn't liking it much but by the end I really liked this album. I honestly don't think I've heard anything like this before.

Why do the US and UK printings of this have all of one track different, it's so weird not hearing Slow Motion in this. Anyway, this is such a great album, but it can be a bit one-note - it's another one where it's probably a 4.5, but I'll see which way Future Em rounds.

This is one where we need a more refined scoring system, because it's a great album, but is it five stars?

Not my favourite Flaming Lips album (At War With the Mystics is still the best, don't @ me), but 'a mid-range Flaming Lips album' is still objectively a very good album. Feeling Yourself Disintegrate in particular gets stuck in my head for days on end.

I'll give it higher than what it should be based off the other albums on the list. It's different and at least tries to gain my attention

Mér fannst og finnst Race for the prize vera æðislegt lag og þakklátur X-inu gamla að hafa spilað það. Svo er restin af plötunni bara ansi skemmtileg.

Me: "I'll take 'Apparently Beloved Albums of the 00s You've Forgotten Entirely' for 400." Alex: "Answer: This 1999 predecessor to their more well-known 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robot' was apparently so beloved by you that you still remember all of the lyrics to all of the songs 25 years later." Me: [....] Jeopardy sound effect: *bonk bonk bonk* Alex: "That would be The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips."

this is the platonic flaming lips sound to me, oft imitated, never duplicated. i legitimately like this more than yoshimi, but even i struggle not to wonder if i'm just saying that to sound cool.

I am not sure if I will be coming back to this album any time soon or even at all but it was a beautiful album, very interesting, it was my thing. Great album.

Under the wildly creative noise and avant garde creativity, there exists beautiful pop that would succeed on its own. It’s not enough for the flaming lips. Through that veneer, they establish that they are dealing in time-travelling intergalactic circles and they have a message to share that wells up from the universe, all with childlike wonder. This album threatened to make me cry a few times and I may be back to do just that.

Oh man, this is one gorgeous sounding record! Layers of sound and everything in the low end is super rich. Just based on the songs, I'd say this is a 3-star album. Considering the beautiful, rich and layered sound though, I'm giving this 4 stars.

A very important album to me. Waiting for Superman was on a mix cd made for me that got me back into music after a break when my daughter was born. Outside of that sentimentality, it is a phenomenal album with a lot of notable songs and a beautifully well structured album. I want to own it. 4.5 stars

Both with bias and purpose, I think Yoshimi is a better album with a more complete story. However, the Soft Bulletin proved that lushness and weird could coexist in the same place. Debuting at the end of a millennia, it changed how many people listening and writing would come to view music.

S-tier drum production. I also really liked the soundscapes and the arrangements. I liked the album as a whole, but only saved a couple of songs. I think this is one I'll come back to, but as of right now I mostly just appreciate the creativity and the vibe. Still an easy 4.

Another great Flaming Lips album. Psychedelic and eccentric arrangements combine with the indie elements to make something one of a kind.

i really enjoy this album. specifically race for a prize & waiting for a superman. really enjoy this band and their sound

Honestly great album. Very consistent and I like the sound a lot. Feels very grand and a little out of left field. I feel like the singing could have been better at parts but I love the instrumentals. 7.8/10

not even my favorite flaming lips album but I love the sound. -1 for the stupid lyrics, would be a 5/5 with good lyrics

I really liked this, the instrumental sections were fire. But it's not as good as Yoshimi.

This was really fun and silly as I expected Flaming Lips to be, I am a big fan of Yoshimi vs The Pink Robots but I've never listened to this album before. I recommended it to my wife since she's a fan too, I think this is a fun 4 star album for me.

Catchy and enjoyable stuff

81% Best: Race for the Prize; The Spark That Bled; What Is the Light?; Waitin’ for a Superman; Feeling Yourself Disintegrate Must-Hear? Maybe

The Flaming Lips make fun and interesting music. I’m less familiar with this album than Yoshimi but it’s a solid listen. The Gash is a standout track.

Highlights: Race For The Prize, The Spark That Bled, The Observer, Sleeping on the Roof. In a nutshell: "the limits now are none" Although some Beach Boys fans would scoff at the idea of other bands having "the Pet Sounds of (insert decade here)" moniker, critics were right when it comes to The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips. My interpretation of this is any album that is "considered a landmark work for its innovative sound and influence on later music." (citation needed). The key word here is innovative. The Soft Bulletin intricately layered, synth-phonic. Joyous, hopeful and melancholic at the same time. If you are ever invited to a Flaming Lips show, go. I went to their Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots album tour in January 2025 without knowing much about the band. It was dazzling. It's not just a gig, it's an experience. Overall: 8/10

love these guys! been listening since the very beginning - this is a lovely album and is a wondeful listen - Wayne reminds me sometimes of a softer sweeter J Mascis

Classic rock through the funhouse mirror, slanted Disney keys and surreal lyrics all whipped up into a melodic meringue. They had a lot of great moment along the way but needed to cook a little longer than most bands truly peak - album eight? Nine? Well into their second decade - Flaming Lips found new ways to mess with your head and squeeze your soul and provide some feels all with a maturely childlike sensibility. Chock full of ideas. Does love buzz? Maybe. But this album definitely does.

Great album

wow i liked this a lot more than i thought i would???

Good stuff. Highlights include: “Race for the Prize” “A Spoonful Weighs a Ton” “The Spiderbite Song” “What Is the Light?” “Waiting’ for a Superman” “The Gash”

Very good and cohesive album. One of it's strenghts is how effortlessly the next song follows the previous one.

Fun enough. Just about a 4.

4 Stars (11/15)

First listen left me mostly shrugging this off as a 3 but there were some melodies and musical choices that stuck with me so I revisited and ended up looking into the companion album, and nearly watched the Pitchfork minidoc on the band and album. I’ve never been a huge Lips-head but grew up loving Yoshimi, and “Do You Realize??” is a song my mom showed me that has always stuck with me due to its existential lyrics. Not saying that The Soft Bulletin is going to start me off on my expanded FL journey but *this one* is an album that will stick with me.

A good album, I liked Race for the Prize and a Spoonful Weights a Ton the most.

The lead singer's voice sounds strained in a lot of the songs. Apart from that it was an interesting listen, lot of random stuff in the background. The songs mixed by Mokran were definitely better. I liked this one more than the Yoshimi album. Low 4.

7/10 - There were a bunch of songs that I kind of enjoyed but his voice was just annoying. I really liked race for the prize and waitin for a superman

Such a rich and warm album. I can see why people gushed about it. What I don’t see is why I’d never heard of it.

Sehr kurzweiliges Indie Album aus den USA mit einer ruhiger Atmosphäre und dadurch einprägsamen Slngs. Diese sind musikalisch gut und weisen eine experimentelle Raffinesse aus. Besonders gefallen haben mir „The Spatrk That Bled“, „A Spoonful Wheights a Ton“, „Race for The Prize” und „Waitin‘ For a Superman“. Gerne mal Wiederhören.

This was a really enjoyable listen. Definitely enjoy it's spacey/psychedelic vibe that keeps things fun and fresh through a long-ish runtime. The highlights for me were the opener Race for the Prize and Feeling Yourself Disintegrate. Definitely a dense album that I'd really like to come back to. Feels like something you would appreciate the more times you listen to it. Solid 4.

4.5 Stars. Great album and definitely bias because I have seen them live. I appreciate their music a lot more after seeing them live and how much of a wild spectacle it is and how weird these guys really are. Fun album, Race for the Prize is a jam.

Another very pretty and psychedelic album from the Flaming Lips. Race for the Prize is possibly my favorite song by them and it really starts the album off with some heat. It's hard not to compare it to Yoshimi because that album is excellent. This album is a lot more serene and spacey. This was the first time I listened to this album in its entirety. I think it is a very high 4 which could climb to a 5 with some more familiarity. But for now I just don't think it gave me the "5" feeling.

Flaming Lips are such a funny band. The way that they makes songs make no sense and should not sound good at all, but they are so good. The quirkiness just keeps me completely entertained for the whole album. I don't really choose to play them and I don't think I would ever add any of their songs to my playlists, but I am so happy to listen to a full album when it comes up here. Race for the Prize is an absolute jam though I must say.

I love this era of the lips. Obviously Yoshimi was the one that got me super into them, but this is just as good. Love Friddman's production. One of the most fun live bands. I recommend hallucinogens.

so, so fun to listen to. these guys know how to do a theme. i love the instrumentals in this and noticed them more than i had in previous albums of theirs

Neo-psychedelic/dream pop album from the late 1990s. I was quite neutral about it while listening the first half of the album, then it suddenly started to click. It's a very well produced and compact album. A lot of these albums from the genre sounds dated nowadays, but not this one. The singing is a bit too much, but overall it's a lovely album.

Nice little album

3x 3.9 man great tracks

Good to hear this again but Yoshimi edges it.

The drums sound is absolutely insane. Ez 5 if it weren't for the 2 random nothing but sound songs.

Starts off really good, second half is a bit weaker.

stor overraskelse! Meget eklektisk og cinematisk. Kunne godt lide hans stemme

норм

This album is always more cohesive than I think it is. It's also better as an album than I remember. I love Yoshimi but this is almost a party album. The people that don't like it can shove it. They're also incredible live.

Damn fine album

Very indie & blissful record

4 - some really cool ideas and production, title tracks is amazing

Лучшая песня - What Is the Light?

Really good album. Probably one of the closest to 5 stars I’ve listened to yet. Just not quite there though

Listened to this one at work as well. It was like a mixture between Pulp and Pavement. I think that’s a pretty good description. Some of the lyrics were annoying, but there were a lot of instrumentals that caught me off guard. Some cool stuff. No standouts because I couldn’t see the titles.

I enjoy these guys

1st song-the song is very good but it sound a kid sing it so i rate like 10/10 2nd song-its ok but i really like it sound so good so i rate like 10/10

Race for the Prize Waitin' for a Superman

Just a few days after Yoshimi, a good way to give The Flaming Lips a proper go. I liked this one more, found it a bit heavier and catchier and less wacky and far out. I generally love a concept album but this one, being more of a standard LP was more of my thing. I felt my 3 was a little bit of a rounding-down for Yoshimi which was a weak 3.5 so I'll balance that out by rounding up this guy, which is a much stronger 3.5, to a 4.

Wasn’t sure if I knew this but know it’s a band I should love, somehow I’ve never seen or bought - a gap. But of course I know the opener, sounds like it is just made for a sunny day at a festival. The rest of this is a first listen for me. I was just thinking how much the singer here Wayne Coyne reminds me of the Mercury Rev singer Jonathan Donahue only to read that JD was in Flaming Lips before this came out. Also interesting to me that the band is from Oklahoma - look at it on a map it’s bang in the middle of USA. The music takes unexpected turns, lots going on, it’s exciting. It is quite classical, orchestral, theatrical, so many instruments on here. Mad that this is their 9th studio LP, so long to wait for critical acclaim, also mad that only 3 band members making the music ?!? Only half way through I realize there’s too much to take in here on first listen but also this should be listened to on vinyl as the production is quite something. The tracks are all very different on this, it never gets samey & the unexpected twists continue. It’s very rich, I’ve heard about the shows and would’ve loved to have seen this live. I saw them on TV at Glastonbury once and it looked amazing. This is happy uplifting one love psychedelia as shown in the blues & yellows of the LP cover photo of Neal Cassady from the acid tests. Yes this is great actually even better than I was expecting, a gap in my musical knowledge around this time, so very nice to fill it in.

Great listen really liked Race for the prize, Waiting for Superman, Suddenly everything has changed. A lot of these will go into the rotation

first listened a few years ago and LOVED it (9/10) but didn't actually remember that much besides race for the prize + feeling yourself disintegrate. upon relisten it feels somewhere between earnest and cheesy at times but maybe i'm just a cynic. i also felt some of the songs dragged on longer than they needed to and the arrangements didn't always justify the runtime—but the instrumental tracks (the observer + sleeping on the roof) were still some of my other favs 👍

Catchy and weird. I love the vulnerable, strained vocals on Spiderbite, and the dirty guitar riff on Buggin’. Highlights: Race for the Prize, The Spiderbite Song, The Gash.

Favorite Track: Race for the Prize

The Soft Bulletin is a little bit similar to Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots with its sound. I love that album so that’s not a complaint, haha. This album has a good production! Mark Coyne’s vocals, while good and memorable, can sound a bit off at times, and some tracks are more memorable than others. However, that doesn’t take away from most of this album. The performances are something to admire here. The lyrics are simplistic yet intriguing. While I may prefer Yoshimi, I still appreciate this album and many songs on it. I’d recommend this one (and especially Yoshimi, that album is amazing)!

I love The Flaming Lips, they are funny and different and interesting, and this album was a pleasure to listen to. Rating: 4

Really enjoyable. I like the Flaming Lips. The lyrics are a bit ... grim ... in places but I kind of like the way they jar with the lightness of the instrumentation. And the drum production is super crunchy.

For this review, I'm not factoring the Mokran remixes for the singles "Race for the Prize" and "Waitin' for a Superman" tacked on at the end of the worldwide digital release. I've heard of The Flaming Lips as a psychedelic rock band, though mainly from a few songs from their album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. The Soft Bulletin is the album before that when they started incorporating more catchy melodies and intricate arrangements in their sound. I can see why comparisons have been made to Pet Sounds, concerning the embellished symphonic touches the group accomplished with multiple MIDI keyboards. That's before we get into the splashes of electronic elements courtesy of Michael Ivins, paired with Steven Drozd's syncopated drum work that brings about an atmospheric sound that makes me feel like I'm on a journey through space. That said though I understand if this style of music is not for everyone. Alongside that notion, Wayne Coyne's higher-register vocal delivery can make or break your experience though to me at least it fits the progressive pop-rock style similarly to Jon Anderson's vocals for Yes. At the end of the day, it's a solid album from an experimental band refining their sound to make it more enjoyable for the masses. It's worth a listen.

Got about 1.5 listens. Flaming Lips layered harmonies and melodies on this album are really beautiful. It’s not something I would listen to often, but I think I’m starting to appreciate their music. 4/5.

Previously rated: Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (4/5) ****************************************** Again, the drums are the strongest part of the album. I don’t think it’s as good as Yoshimi, but I liked it enough to want to hear it again. A low 4.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Wayne Coyne objectively cannot sing, but that simply makes the songs more intimate. The album feels better for it, a more genuine musical expression. I have no idea about the actual history of the band, but this feels like a natural progression of the punk ethos of the grunge era. The songs are experimental, but poppy, with distinct elements of 1999 to them, while being less harsh and noisy.

Had a fairly decent run of albums recently, none that have been a real drag to get through and we all know there are some draggers on this list. Never given this band the time of day but this was a pleasant surprise to hear. I can see how this would really fall low on people’s ratings but I liked the vibe of it!

Never really listened to this band before. This is nice. Some parts are better than others. Don’t always like the off-key twanging singing. It subtracts more than it adds. Cause the music is very good. Easy to see why this was popular with the festival set. Probably wonderful when you’re young and tripping on acid with 50,000 of your closest friends. 4/5

This was a peculiar album for me. It didn't gel with me much to begin with, but as it went on, I felt more and more that it needed a second listen to appreciate fully. By my own scoring system, that means it gets four stars, but it feels like a shoe in somehow.

A quavering voice that tries too hard, but I also somehow find it endearing. The music sounds older than it is, or maybe it's just me getting older.

This album is full of really nice sounding songs, however the drums and the bass are rather loud and distorted at the start of the album.

Wow this polarize people in their reviews. Brilliant quirky indie.

I need to listen to more tbh

I can't lie, I find his voice really annoying and don't have the patience to get through the whole thing... Such good tracks and I didn't realise the extent to which the band was so orchestral. I'll give it a 4 in terms of talent appreciation but a 2.5 personally. Actually, going to start again. Phenomenal - voice still tad annoying but get used to it. Just beautiful music, 4.4.

Really great

Soft rock. Really good actually 8/10

R.E.M. if the took more drugs, better drugs and had less quality control. I saw the Flaming Lips once back in 1994 at Sydney's Alternative Nation. They came on just after the tab of very strong acid, fittingly called a Superman. I can't be sure what was them or an hallucination. Anyway, it took me a while to want to listen to them again fearing a full on flashback. So this album is lovely weirdness of the kind many second tier indie bands try to emulate with unremarkable results. Four stars but only because you really have to be in the right mood to spend an hour with Wayne Coyne

Turns out if you add extra fuzz on your soft-spoken indie rock it makes all the difference.

Es un disco bien particular. La primera canción me gustó muchísimo, es un sonido muy particular, no sé si me gustó o no lo hizo. Para escucharlo una segunda vez.

Kinda surprised it came before the Yoshimi album. It sounded more refined and more rock-ished, albeit less heartfelt that that one. Pretty nice.

Extraordinary. I sometimes find the production too clipped and bright but I guess you could argue that's also a big part of what makes it unique*. The opening three songs are particularly great. Form, lyrical content, performance; superb. *Not to hate on it, I also feel that way about some other Fridmann productions, e.g. the Delgados and some Mercury Rev. Would love to hear a remastering of some of these records.

Listened to this a few times last year, it's an enjoyable album... if you like The Flaming Lips that is; it's out there!

I've never listened to this before. At the surface level it sounds like coffee house music, particularly fitting for Portland. But then if you listen closer, the music is composed of strange sounds that mix to form the melodies. It's interesting and I enjoyed it while working. Also, a new song for the Viridian playlist: What is the light That you have Shining all around you? Is it chemically derived?

Surprisingly good... and hilarious. Still no dancing!

Probably a five star album that I like at a 3-4 star level

I must have been in exactly the right mood because I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Dreamy and wistful. Unambitiously pretty.

Yoshimi is better, bit this is still good. Yeah, still good. 4/5

Always a great pleasure to listen that album

Pretty groovy vibes. 4.5

3.5 rounded up. some great songs on here but I don't love it as much as I once did

Enjoyed this. Not my favorite album of theirs, but still good.

Such is the warmth, humanity and good vibes that there is no pretension, despite the considerable ambition. Fun, sweet and vaguely uplifting as this is, one still slightly prefers Yoshimi as FLs' masterpiece.

love it, that early Flaming Lips is classic.

Tons of great stuff on here. This is the first time I've listened to a flaming lips album all the way through. It won't be the last. My biggest complaint is that the back half fades a bit to better background than foreground music for me.

first listen. very chill and pleasant to the ears, i liked it a lot

Quirky, pretty, but eclectic stuff with a bunch of different instruments. Hard to pigeonhole this genre wise. Certainly lots of indie (dream) pop sounds but it really does cover quite a lot of ground. Some really beautiful moments like the sad melody on Race for the Prize or the intro to A Spoonful Weighs a Ton. Whiny vocals at times is the only negative for me, keeping it from being outstanding. Unsurprisingly, then, the largely instrumental The Observer was another highlight. Very good.

Man, I do love the flaming lips! Not their best album imo, but still pretty great

I didn't love this album at first but it substantially grew on me as I listened to tracks such as Feeling Yourself Disintegrate, Waiting for a Superman and A Spoonful Weighs a Ton. The first on the list especially moves me and I think that this album has great replay value.

Over played The Flaming Lips about 10 years ago to the point they annoyed me. Although really it was just Yoshimi I used to listen to. A good amount of time has passed and Im less familiar with this so it felt new. Great record though, has that unique FL style of soft pysch indie. Each songs sounds like you’re either riding a lovey dragon or are watching a sunset over some lovely beach. Another ridiculously influential band definitely worthy of a few slots on this list. Probably listened to A Spoonful Weighs a tonne 50 times since I heard it so I’d say that was my favourite, along with the classic opener. Overall though there’s no real duff moments. A solid 4.5

Somebody once asked me if I liked the flaming lips and instead of saying 'no, are they good, any albums you would recommend?' I just said no, because I was a music snob despite listening to 90% pop punk. I then listened to a few tracks and it turns out I would like them and they were bang on to ask me. They've got a grand sort of classic movie quality to them and combined with their indie sound it's really unique. The only album I really know is Yoshimi battles the pink robots and I prefer it to this album which sounds like a much earlier one, apart from the first track there wasn't any standouts but I still enjoyed it. Should listen to more flaming lips, this album was good but not an essential listen id say.

Reading our reviews, everyone has different favourites. That's pretty cool - they have a fair amount of diversity on the album and a number of good tracks. For me, What is the Light, The Spiderbite Song, and The Spark that Bled really stand out. A very easy 4. Great stuff.

I've been meaning to listen to the flaming lips for years, so I'm glad this has come up. I know a few tracks, but none from this album... Initially I wasn't sure but it really grew on me. It's got a hint of the postal service about it. Highlights: Race for the prize Waiting for a superman I hope there's more on the list. Think I'll be back 3.5 for now

very good album, probably a 4.5 rating. I want to listen some more.

Man, what a great album. Had a blast listening and have been going back recently.

The Flaming Lips have a knack for making beautiful pop music and then making it more interesting. The odd instrumentation and production changes stuck with me as I heard the opening track get blown out by peaking volumes and funny synth sounds. Fittingly, the album closes with reprises as you hear two wonderful songs in a new light, showing how the Flaming Lips innovates in pop music in fantastic ways.

The album takes some time to get used to. Then it gets better and better with its calm, unagitated songs.

Some good tracks, voice is shocking

Great album that really brings me back to a specific time and place in my life. Great music by a revolutionary band grappling with what they wanted that to mean and themselves. The different version releases and some filler muddies the waters for me though. Only thing that keeps it from a 5.

Although i discovered this after their 2000's opus, I think I prefer it's universe

Maybe it lulled a little in the middle but strong start and incredible last leg.

This isn't my favorite Flaming Lips album, but I do really like it. I think I probably haven't spent enough time with it. I have friends that this is their favorite. I prefer Yoshimi and War with Mystics. I will keep this in the rotation to see if I can find some hits with a few listens.

I liked this a lot. I didn't think I would. Loud drums mixed to be quiet. Some genuine love in the lyrics. Still weird and not to everyone's taste -- but it hit me nicely. Unexpected bangers: Waiting for a Superman, A Spoonful Weighs a Ton

I knew of the Flaming Lips for a few random reasons, but this is my first full-album listen. It was really good, and I look forward to exploring more from the band, which has surprisingly been around since 1983. I can't give it a 5 only because too many songs bleed together without a true standout. But I will for sure seek out more Lips in the future.

I love the Flaming Lips. Wayne Coyne is a gift. They have so many albums with great tracks and they don't seem to be slowing down.

far out

Made me cry. Fav songs suddenly everything has changed, what is the light, and buggin

always been a peripheral fan of Flaming Lips but the more I hear, the more I really like them!

Thoughts before listening: Another album on this list that I own. This isn't my favorite Flaming Lips album, but that's only because Yoshimi is a masterpiece. Still though this is a very good album that I've consistently listened to for years. Review: I love that the band that became known for a novelty song like "She Don't Use Jelly" ended up becoming even better known for releasing nearly perfect orchestral pop albums. These songs are extremely catchy pop gems and blew me away the first time I heard this album. "Race for the Prize", "The Spiderbite Song", "Waitin' for a Superman", "Suddenly Everything Has Changed", and "Feeling Yourself Disintegrate" are all absolute gems that have stuck with me long after I first heard them. I'll give this 4-stars for the fact that Yoshimi is Flaming Lips' best and because there are a couple of boring duds on the album.

Feeling yourself disintegrate Mental instrumentation

I think this album is just straight up charming, the vocalists unique and child like voice, the brash instrumentals which feel well produced although everything sounds like it’s been recorded in a garage. 3.8

I really liked this album, wavering over whether to give it a 4 or a 5 but I could do without the ‘Mokran mix’ additions

Pretty rad.

A spoonful does in fact weigh a ton

Classic lips well liked

Enjoyed lyrics and layers of music throughout…. Science, Superman… Surprised I missed this when realized, though had left London by then

This fits right in with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and OK Computer as albums that are describing the strange feeling that we were living at the high point of human civilization in the late 1990s yet something was missing. I like the other two albums better, but I very much enjoyed this one as well.

Enjoyable listen, didn't get bored. Appreciated the mixing. Not something I'd necessarily get back to but I enjoyed it. Felt dreamy.

I am not a fan of modern art. I would compare them to Salvador Dali. They both tell interesting stories, and I think I was more a fan of the sounds than some of the lyrics.

I'll admit only passing familiarity with these guys but this album went down easy i.e. I had it on while doing other things and found myself occasionally checking in and being like "oh, that's interesting" -- unusual for a record in semi background mode to do that. It means I'll have to listen to it again, hence a four, anything interesting enough to require a relisten later is clearly better than some of the dreck on the 1001.

Never knew what to expect from this band. I’m digging this album though.

Very solid album, a rock opera to be sure, an album that tells a tale you have to love. Very weird but I appreciate weird. Lotta lovely melodies interlaced with beautiful noise rock lite tapestries and folky sensibilities. Thinky surrealist lyrics

I liked everything about this except the weird voice crack thing he does sometimes. Favorite song: Buggin'

Blends so smoothly into Yoshimi a fave.

I guess I can start to call myself a fan. This quite enjoyable and my first time listening to the whole album. This could potentially become a 5 with a few more listens but for now fave track is A Spoonful Weighs a Ton, and Suddenly Everything Has Changed.

Very cool stuff. Proto-Pond, psychedelic type experimental rock, using drum machines and blown out sounds for what a sunburn feels like when you put aloe over it. I liked it a lot, but only a few songs really stuck out to me. Good stuff.

Very good album. Great sound and style Has a little UK The edge to it for a middle American band . Great band that shows up on this album. Solid , consistent songs that plays like an album not a bunch of singles mashed together

Another band that’s been hanging on my periphery…besides “Do You Realize”, hadn’t heard any of their music. If the rest of their catalog is like this I could pay more attention. Evolved Psychedelic sound makes it work.

Delicious melodies and subtle sounds.

They're just humans

It's not Yoshimi, but it's pretty damn cool

Finally, some good music again. This time, it's The Flaming Lips, a band that I have vaguely heard of before and that's about it. Seriously though, this album is pretty good. I have a few minor problems to go over first. First of all, it is a bit long. It doesn't drag too much, but it is somewhat noticeable. Secondly, the singing isn't bad, but it isn't everyone's thing, and I could see why someone else might not like it. That's it for complaints. Time for praise! I like the sound of this album. It's not the craziest thing out there, but it is just a nice solid pop-rock sound. I like it. The writing is also quite good. There are some great songs on here. Songs like "Race for the Prize" and "Waitin' for a Superman" are so good that they have two versions on this album! The alternate versions are at the end, so they don't really have any negative bearing on the whole album experience. They're just kind of nice to have. The other songs are good as well. There's some good emotion to this album, with prevalent themes like death and the struggles of life being executed well. Overall, this is a great album that serves as a nice listen for the end of a middle-of-the-road day. 4/5.

Great indie rock album Would definitely listen again 3.5
