despite being the most praised Coldplay album, i’ve never been a super big fan of this one. it’s got some great songs, but overall it doesn’t really hit for me. it’s always nice to go back to bands i listened to as a teen though :) 3.5
Very consistent and very boring in a very Coldplay way. 3/5
Alright, bit overdone
This one is okay. Not the typical kind of music I’d listen to, but certainly not boring. Turns out I actually knew a lot of the songs already. I saved The Scientist to my favorites.
I still think Coldplay is the equivalent of painting your entire house beige, but this was more palatable than their debut
3.5
Es un buen grupo pero que no me llena.
Not terrible, but still don’t get how they got as big as they are. Sings are decent though.
Rock, 2002 -> 3
Coldplay is solid. Somewhere between 3 and 4 for this album. Not bad but not jumping to listen on repeat either.
The album is fine and has good songs. It just has the most dull, monotonous, and uninteresting sound ever placed on wax. Nothing about these songs is exciting. It's like the band all had a head cold, took some nyquil, and made unusually boring music in that Nyquil-fueled haze like zombies. The lackluster vibe just drags on and on and never changes. I understand the draw of Coldplay for people, but I only really enjoy this era of their work when I am feeling down and need a soundtrack for that mood. Their more recent work has more life and energy and is way more enjoyable.
Certainly some great songs on this but Coldplay just never really did it for me. From personal taste, just can give them the 4 star love,
ganz cool aber mir bissle zu traurig und auch nicht 100% meine lieder
This was a hard one to rate. I *did* genuinely enjoy listening to this for the first time in 20 years, even though I've always found it vastly inferior to 'Parachutes'. God Put a Smile On Your Face, The Scientist and Warning Sign are all solid, and I've always particularly enjoyed the title track and Amsterdam, which close out the album beautifully. But then there's the truly execrable Clocks, the mere hint of that arpeggio triggering some sort of PTSD, and the other truly forgettable tracks. This is the ultimately album that killed any interest in Coldplay for me. Rather than building on a strong debut, it set them on their course for superstardom as a meandering, U2-like, inexplicably popular nothing-band. As an epitaph, I think a 3 is fair.
It's hard to objectively look at Coldplay from a 2002 perspective. They changed pop music for like a decade or longer with this album. So it sounds so plain and recycled at this point. But like... this was the first album to make this style. Melodies and harmonies are simple, clean and pleasing to hear. Everyone is playing their instruments exactly the right amount. Overall it is safe and these days feels sterile. But it's hard to argue it's an album that changed pop music. Green Eyes is a standout track to me and I enjoyed the back half of the album a lot.
I was biased against cold play going in but it was a good album
Strong opening to the album then it kinda dies on the back half
I liked this, but it wasn’t anything super special for me.
A Rush of Blood to the Head, is a perfectly fine, non-offensive contemporary rock album. There are fleeting moments I felt that they were going to push their boundaries even just a little but they never really did and I suppose that’s fine. I’ve always really enjoyed The Scientist, Daylight it a decent tracks as well. It’s all fine, there’s nothing necessarily bad here. 3 stars
It's Coldplay so I'm sure this will get a lot of hate and I don't disagree with most of it. They've become bland, lowest common denominator stadium pop for people who don't like music and the people reviewing these albums don't fit that brief. I remember when their first album came out and it seemed genuinely exciting and there is no denying that there are 3 or 4 quality pop songs on this album but the rest of it doesn't stand out for me
The ones I knew were good, the rest were forgettable
Already heard it!
Okay. Half of these songs are fine. Some are boring.
Fairly enjoyable 3.5
If you like Coldplay it's good
I was disappointed I got Coldplay as first listen. But actually... not bad. Just not my cup of tea!
A lot of the reviews point out that this is very generic and written to appeal to a wide range of people, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing!
I went in thinking I would immediately love this album, since i had listened to a lot of it before and remember liking it. And while I did still enjoy it, I felt that the album as a whole was long strong than its heavy hitters. The hits are definitely still powerhouses though
gwyneth paltrow husband
Nothing really stood out other than the most famous song (Clocks). Not too bad.
Some huge arena hits for the time. Instrument, lyrics, whole vibe is on the nose mid-2000s. Not great interesting stuff in hindsight, but a scene-report nonetheless.
Preeeetty sleepy. That's normal. I find it interesting that Coldplay is as successful as they are, I mean there is clearly a market for calm, melancholic, beautiful music, but there's not much to get excited about on this album. Seems like the purpose is just the opposite, calming and soothing. I like Coldplay, personally, although this album was not my favourite iteration of their style.
Has some of the hits you think of when you think of Coldplay and was a cohesive album! I’m not sure that I would listen to it end to end again but it fit what I expected based on knowing a few of the songs ahead of time.
mid album, tracks that are good have been overplayed to the point I don't want to listen to it any more
This is an album I own and haven't listened to it for ages. Still a decent album after more than 20 years...
Ja ich mag halt Klavier und kitschigen Gesang nicht so gerne aber das Album geht voll klar, würde es mir aber selbst nicht nochmal anhören.
Better than expected. Not a huge fan of Coldplay but wasn’t disgusted by it.
Coldplay is best when you don't pay much attention to it. Nice background tunes while you focus on something else. Not the most ringing endorsement, but it is comfortable. Nothing deep, nothing difficult. Like a piece of gum.
I'm going through this list with an open mind and open heart and this was pretty flavourless for me but not bad. It sure did happen.
It’s strange how much of a difference there is between how much I liked it when it came out, and now. It aged like a cask of Fruity Lexia. 3 stars because I once got laid because I played the intro to clocks at a hotel lobby once.
Coldplay! Wow. Probably a good thing to realize that albums appearing on this list may be pop hits that have overstayed their welcome. I owned this album when it came out. "God Put a Smile on your face" was one of the first songs I downloaded on my PC (it was featured in an Alias episode). Remember when Clocks played nonstop on the radio for 10 years straight? Though I believe Warning Sign and Politik are the prettiest songs on this album.
This was good enough. Easy to listen to, but not to love
Surprisingly good. But sick of it by the end.
I remember actually being *excited* about a 2nd Coldplay album after digesting the shit out of their debut. Then after a few plays of this back in the day my reaction was ... meh? It's fine. But was/is never nearly as emotional or impactful for me as their first album was - I missed that raw space and mystery in their first songs and will still defend their debut. What is it about this one though - there's nothing *bad* here and in fact most of the songs follow the 3 or 4 chord repetition similar in template to "Parachutes" so why does it feel different? Like ... 45 seconds in to most songs I'm like "yeah yeah ok i get it" and by the end of the song you can sit at the piano or pick up a guitar and already have it all figured out. Ok ok let's take "Daylight" as a great example: this track is *almost* there - that chorus (if it is even a chorus) is a nice ray of <ahem> light in an otherwise nicely dissonant song, but there's barely any variety so that's it. it doesn't go anywhere. Same guitar riff, drums that could almost be just a loop, the vocals are horribly repetitive (the end!?? come on) - anything at all new added would have been more than welcome so it just ends up dull. There's nothing *wrong* with this album, it's just not that inspiring nor interesting overall. Even if admittedly some of the singles bring a dash of nostalgia...which is pretty fleeting. Although I really don't like "Green Eyes" and that was a big red flag since the simple arrangement is the closest thing to "Parachutes" on the album but is so lightweight and un-mysterious that it's just a throwaway. The highlight for me is the final cut "Amsterdam" although it's a bit of a slog to get there and even when you do it's like "...how is this exciting?" but that payoff about 3/4 of the way through is worth it. I guess in the end this album was a signal that the band were in the process of turning into a bore which who tf am I to say as they became the biggest band in the world, so good on them. We amicably agreed to see other people at this point as I politely exited the Coldplay express. 5/10 3 stars
I was loving this album on the front half. It was moodier than I expected from the Coldplay singles I know. Then unfortunately after "Clocks" I slowly got bored. Maybe the second half will improve on the second listen but for now it felt kind of missable. Which is a little sad because the second half was more how I was expecting the whole album to sound. I do like some Coldplay but they can be very hit or miss for me.
Coldplay, das sind doch die aus dem Radio. Melodiöser Weltschmerz. Erinnert an REM und ist heute auf dem Weg zu U2. Keine Ahnung was ich davon halten soll.
overall I didn't really enjoy the album. Couple good songs on here though.
It's not bad? It's occasionally kind of compelling, but not as often as I'd like. It's a bit too long. I have a special place in my heart for "Clocks". Highlights: The Scientist, Clocks, A Rush of Blood to the Head
Ci sono delle hit e dei momenti musicali davvero incredibili e poi parte la canzone piu dimenticabile di sempre
Coldplay do make some undeniable bangers. Favourite track: The Scientist.
Haven't listened to this album for 15 years . It's held up surprisingly well considering the burning trash fire which is Coldplay's recent output.
3.5
never really listened to much Coldplay before besides Vive Le Vida. I found this album pleasant but kinda shallow. You can tell its made by a band who tops charts because while the songs where good they just werent great. Missing that unique or wow factor that really makes me love and artist/album
Parachutes is better, also this band is overhated
I enjoyed this album. It wasn't a standout to me and something I'm dying to listen to again, but I will definitely return to it in the future
It sounds nice but it kind of all blends as background music. I doubt I'll listen to much of it again
Boring, inoffensive
Moody and chiming, ambitious and intermittently operatic. But the record also gets to feeling calculated and overdetermined, I know it was all about the high drama of the early 2000s. “Clocks” is perfect, precision-engineered pop, an earworm for the ages. “Green Eyes” shows the merits of simplicity and shows where they might have gone. The big hooks and effects (strings and more strings, splashy cymbals, dreamy keys, clippy guitars), plus the over-solemn, borderline treacly slower cuts, reveal the perils of overstatement and excess ambition, a flaw that would soon prove to be more than fatal. Seems more calculated than naturally beautiful though editors are on track to call it "engrossing."
I like their music.
It's Coldplay. The album sounds like one 54 minute song. Not bad to work to or fall asleep to, but nothing I'm ever going to put on independently. I've never understood the hype, and I was 100% in the target audience at the time.
An easy listening soft rock pop album with a hint of nostalgia for me. Listening to it 20 years later makes me realize that it really isn't more than just easy listening soft rock pop with a few radio bangers. Also, is Coldplay just soft rock Imagine Dragons?
"God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" is a lot harder rock than more modern Coldplay is. It gives me big Radiohead vibes.
better than I expected !! 3.5 stars in my place, the scientist, clocks ofc, and the title track were my favs
Pales in comparison to Parachutes, but very middle of the road Coldplay
A Rush of Blood to the Head I remember liking this when it came out. I liked their first album a lot too, but at the time this felt like a much more confident and ‘big’ sounding record than Parachutes, still with some indieness to it, but adding some expansiveness, a kind of U2 arena type ambition. I didn’t have much interest in X and Y, in fact I only heard the singles, and whether that was because they weren’t cool anymore or I didn’t like the music I’m not sure. Possibly a bit of both. After that I only know a few singles and the general sense of them writing dull and uninspiring vaguely electro arena pop. So it’s interesting listening to this again, hopefully with an open mind, having not listened to it in at least 20 years, trying to separate it from what followed. You can see the roots of what they became here though, lyrically and thematically at least - a lot of what we would now recognise as empty instagram inspirational quotes, vague but also not open to personal interpretation, meaningless but not universal, a series of homilies that on the surface sound pleasing but are ultimately hollow. Musically however it holds up better. In My Place, God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, The Scientist and Clocks are very good bits of arena pop rock, catchy and direct and very well constructed. GPASUYF and Clocks in particular I still like. Beyond that there are some decent tracks in that same vein, in keeping with the overall aim of the album, Politik, Daylight, A Whisper, Amsterdam. The remaining tracks don’t work as well, where the banality overexposes the thematic and emotional emptiness, Green Eyes, Warning Sign, A Rush of Blood to the Head. Even if the songs are patchy, there is no doubt about their skill in creating catchy hooks and melodies and building expansive, arena filling songs out of quite simple but effective instrumentation - very similar to U2 in that regard. There is a palpable feeling that they achieved what they set out to do, and in that sense it is a satisfying listen, even if ultimately the quality is inconsistent and the purposeful vapidity at the heart of it is revealed too frequently for comfort. It’s almost definitely a 2.5, a straight down the middle rating, but I’ll round up to three, on the basis of achieving what they set out to do and for the quality of GPASUYF and Clocks ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The McNugget Meal of an album - you know you shouldn't, but damn if it isn't good in the moment of consumption, followed by deep guilt and a promise to avoid doing that bad bad thing again Until...
i prefer sparks over this. 3.5
Meh
Sweet album! TBH I always thought Coldplay was like a bit more pop-oriented, but this was a nice album of something I didn’t really expect. All of the songs were solid, none were bad but none really stood out. Overall it was pretty good
A couple memorable songs effectively lure a listener into hearing more Coldplay than whatever the radio decides to put on.

sono i Coldplay, cercherò di ascoltarli con meno pregiudizi possibili. Non malvagio, ma non mi fa impazzire
criticizing coldplay for being tame, derivative, and middle-of-the-road would be like criticizing starbucks for selling lattes
Chris Martin needs to get laid....and to stop listening to Radiohead....and needs to shorten most of these songs by two minutes.
Va litt spent på denna, siden eg e ganske drittlei av dei mest kjente sangane. Sett bort ifra dei va da et par gode sanga, men og et par kjedelige. Kunne kanskje gitt 4 om eg ikkje fikk fnatt av P1-sangane
Yasiin Bey once described Drake as "music you can shop to" and I think that's an apt description for Coldplay. There are a couple exceptional songs on here, but if you heard the singles... you're not missing anything. Everything else can be categorized as "songs to fall asleep to".
Drone
It's Coldplay. Pleasant on the ears but uneventful
It feels very much like the type of album you should listen to at night and it encapsulates very well that anxious feeling we all have when it's past 1 a.m. and you're overthinking your entire life. The musical arrangements are really fast paced and Chris Martin's soft voice feels almost like an inner voice inside your head whispering "things will be fine, this is just temporary" while you have a full on panic attack. It's an album you do have to actually listen to in order of being able to understand it, as some of the songs just kind of pass you by if you are not doing some active listening.
Love Coldplay! The three hits on this album, “the Scientist”, “Clocks” and “In my Place” were my favorites. The rest of the album’s tracks felt unremarkable in comparison.
Ah, Coldplay… So funny for this to pop after getting the Joshua Tree. To me, they’re U2 lite, but sanitized and missing U2’s punk aesthetic that U2 started out with in the late 70s early 80s. And Chris isn’t the songwriter Bono is. I’m not surprised Coldplay is popular yet polarizing at same time: to me they’re the modern version of 70s AOR rock that had a similar cultural, non-threatening impact on a lot of people: likeable but bland, like a Docker’s khaki commercial. Wifey says it’s one of her favorite bands to listen to while operating because they’re “easy on the ears and their music doesn’t change much so it relaxes me.” Yup, makes sense. Ultimately for me they have a couple of good songs but overall they don’t move me much.
Good album. I understand why people don't like Coldplay. The heartbreak seems pretty British. I miss you, you're so lovely, thought you should know...here's a musical interlude to punctuate my feelings. It's all lovely but no real feelings were involved. Lovely listen.
It's a bit hard to approach a Coldplay album purely objectively as it is difficult to separate their "casual" reputation from the music that I'm listening to. This is a decent album, they have a good, rich sound with the piano and Clocks is so unique. I think Coldplay have a bit of an unfair shake. I think I mainly prefer the smaller songs of theirs. Standout Track: Daylight
Solid
3/5
Signals self-importance right from the start and gets to outright tedium by the fourth track, a harbinger of the epic and world-historical lameness that is the hallmark of their later work just beginning to manifest itself. “Clocks” feels like an algorithmically designed pop song, with that appealingly chime-y and driving opening figure, but it rings cold and synthetic and a bit false upon a deep listen. The over-reaching for drama and manufacturing of faux intensity is unconvincing and ultimately sappy – “The Scientist” and “A Warning Sign” being Exhibits A and B. Does anyone care what CM is singing about (which almost always seems to be himself)? “Daylight” is far from the worst song you’ll ever hear, but sounds like they are falling in love with their own hook. “Green Eyes” and, to a lesser degree, the title cut suggests what pleasure they might have wrought if they’d contented themselves to play it relatively straight, and not aim to be so bloody operatic on every track. If this was the record they decided to stop pretending to be Radiohead, that was a bold decision, since being Coldplay was clearly not going to be enough, even for this, the most self-regarding of bands. That one gives this a 3 speaks to one’s fair-mindedness in seeing what quality if one gets through the utter insufferability. Really, it's just the confessional navel-gazing you'd expect when you give what's essentially an emo band a huge production budget.
Classic Coldplay. A bit mellower than some of the newer albums, didn't grab me as much
Started really strong, but got stale after
Den holder sgu meget godt! minimalt filler, dem man kender lyder stadig godt. Clocks er og bliver en banger. På vippen mellem 3 og 4 meeen jeg ville nok have trimmet den en lille smule
3-4 total all-timers her, generelt en ret cool lyd. Vildt nok at Coldplay engang var så cool.
...früher mal toll. Überall gespielt und jetzt zuviel gehört. Aber es gibt ein paar Klassiker... .... ....
Best Song: Clocks. This is what I think of when I think of Coldplay. Big, arena-style pop-rock. Worst Song: Warning Sign. The whole thing comes out in one kind of pleading bleat. Overall: I know this is the hacky thing to say about Coldplay, but they legitimately are so inoffensive and slide into the background so easily that several times over the course of this album I forgot that I was even listening to anything. Truly the room-temperature water of the music industry.
This is decidedly average pop/rock music. It doesn’t suck. It isn’t great. If it was a 1/10 scale, I’d say it’s about a 5. Meh. 3/5
Nostalgic but a bit boring and overplayed
I never really understood Coldplay. Yes, it’s easy to listen to, but it’s pop rock. I can’t imagine really loving this, it’s just there.
Coldplay is cool. They have some hits. Besides the hits I don’t get the hype.
Nice album
Some very good pop cuts but it still feels very poppy.
Great work. I liked parachutes and remember listening to this album a lot without knowing it was Coldplay.
Kinda mediocre.
3/5
I've heard these singles since they came out, but this was my first listen to the whole album. It was ok, just some nice, safe, alternative rock. 3/5.
Spotify tells me I listened to this three times. I guess I’ll take their word for it.
Saving the distance, with these it happens to me like with U2, I think they are an overrated band. I give it a 3 because it's pop.
eh
They front loaded this one with all the good tracks and the latter half starts to show glimpses of insufferableness (is that a word?). Downhill after the first album as I recalled correctly
Very enjoyable. I love "Clocks". I find "Scientist" a little dull though, and it's the "big song" on the album. 3 and a half stars, rounding down.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNoMI_Cx6YU
Pretty simple. I like simple music but at the same time I can't feel strongly about it
I mean, it's fine. Not loud or atonal or arhythmic. (Although Chris Martin's voice got pretty annoying by the end.) It's just ... not interesting.
Coldplay (2002) A Rush of Blood To The Head 3 / 5 I’ve never listened to a Coldplay album. I think I can think of a Coldplay song I know, where the say “It was just Yellow”, or something like that. I’ve assumed they are some kind of light weight Adult Contemporary music that they play on the doctors’ office radio station between Maroon 5 and Adele. I’ve listened through this a few times and it all feels very very bland. Sometimes I feel like there’s hope but it’s all so very light weight. There's a song on here I think I recognize but it’s so generic and faceless I’m not sure. If these songs were all sad or something I would like it more. It’s so extremely middle of the road. Sometimes I think Radiohead but without any of the interesting stuff. Sometimes I think of Oasis or that other British band from the same time. When Coldplay is at their most rockin’ they kinda touch on U2 at their lightest. Sometimes when I listen to this I wonder if it really is better than I think. Maybe I’m just coming at it wrong. Maybe it’s not them, maybe it’s me. I don’t know, it kinda feels like work coming around to Coldplay and to find out what I’m missing Production wise this album for sure sounds like a cohesive unit. The whole thing just lays under my skin. It never lets loose and always, no matter what happens always feels like the whole thing is riding in the same pocket. . I think really for me it’s not much more than pleasant background music. Maybe after repeat listens it will be pleasant background music that I’m more familiar with.
Correcto.
You're a scientist?
Hadn't listened to this one in probably 20 years but feel mostly the same way about it ... Scientist is good, Clocks is great, the rest I could take or leave. I'll round up to a 3 because nothing I dislike on it
this album is objectively good but i think coldplay is white people music so 3.5/5
It's pleasant, with sparkling moments, but I had to remind myself to keep listening and not tune it out. It's great Sunday morning. It's good music, and I can totally see why people like it so much, but in 50 years, no one will remember it.
'Green Eyes' one of the first songs i learned to play on guitar and played it all the time like it was wonderwall
Sounds like Pearl Jam and Oasis had a mediocre baby.
Coldplay is notably good at creating a sense of build up or progression through repetitive beats and rhythms. I found this album a lot more enjoyable than the first Coldplay album I got (Parachutes). It is powerful, meaningful, and moving. Not only that though, it is a lot less bland and monotonous.
Quite ok - typical Coldplay album
one of the few colplay ablums I can enjoy.
There are some good songs on here but every song pretty much suffers from the same 2 problems: Too long by 1 or 2 minutes and absolutely no energy. Had they shortened some of these songs and had about a 40-45minuge run time it wouldn't be bad sleepy time music or calm time music, but it just goes on and on for damn near an hour. There's just too long for an album with no "rockers" in the bunch. It's still not bad and I did enjoyed it more than I disliked it. A 3 seems about right. 2.75 is what my brain is saying.
Clocks is ok.. but the songs just roll out feeling like a 2000’s version of Journey. Vaguely meaningful, no bite I guess you can read the tea leaves and extract some emotional longing. In fact, the best Journey is better than this.
good
Excellent early work. Their later albums are much more meaningful to me.
Classic coldplay
3.5 stars
decent.
Tiene temas muy buenos, pero no termina de emocionarme.
Ok album
Well you know what we all slag off Coldplay, and in some ways rightly so as they sold out big time and spout out some dreadful stuff for the shit munchers now. But this was a nostalgia hit and I did like a lot of these songs at some point! You cannot say they're not good or prolific songwriters can you? A nice throwback but obvs not something I would listen to on the regs
A few good songs, but weak in a lot of places.
A Rush of Blood to the Head functions adequately as background music, offering a pleasant atmosphere without commanding full attention. This release established a roadmap for the band's future, revealing their evolving sound which ended up feeling stunted. Nonetheless, its melodic compositions and introspective lyrics still resonate with a certain depth. Notable tracks like Clocks and The Scientist highlight the band's knack for crafting memorable melodies with broad appeal. As a background soundtrack to daily life, it provides a soothing backdrop that seamlessly blends in, leaving a modest impression. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 3 STAND OUT TRACK - The Scientist
Nostalgia factor
look it’s not horrible, there’s just nothing incredibly special about it….
6/10
definition of mid
guy is not a great singer and I have the same feeling about a lot of the songs that jesse has about 21
Perfectly okay. The title track is particularly nice.
I didn't hate this but I certainly don't love this band.
Yeah so I rarely return to Coldplay as their later work is so bad that the earlier work is tainted for me. Parachutes is the exception and is in regular rotation but this album was a wonderful listen. Songs on here that I really liked at the time still resonate. Green Eyes, The Scientist. Pretty songs, pounding drums, synth? I think synth. Anyways, it was a good listen and I was glad of the reminder. I’ll draw a line at X & Y though. That won’t work for me.
This album was everywhere, and has some catchy songs. Not sure I would put it on this list.
Хочется поставить две звезды, типа как-то не зашло. Я слышал колдплей раньше. Но никогда особо с них не кайфовал. Не знааааю. Последний трек был неплохой, потому, наверное, три.
Every year or so, I think, “Okay, time to give Coldplay another chance. Maybe this time, I’ll get it.” I didn’t get it, but there are still a few standout tracks. In particular, Clocks, God Put a Smile upon Your Face, and A Whisper are really solid songs that honestly wouldn’t be out of place on a Greatest Hits record. The Scientist, on the other hand, does not justify its own popularity, being an incredibly nondescript piano track with very little to distinguish it from any of the thousands of highly-produced piano ballads out there. The remaining tracks fall somewhere in between. Most of the songs are slow, synthy, and awash with thick, dramatic textures that grow old surprisingly quickly, especially in the context of the 2020s where there are far better synth-based “soundscape” bands out there. I’ll say this: the album is definitely overrated, but it isn’t bad. 3/5
Before they were corny. Politik is the best song on the album.
Good first half, tails off.
Some iconic stuff on here like the riff from In My Place and the piano melody in Clocks, but a lot of the songs just slip by. Pleasant, but not demanding full attention. Warning Sign is pretty good though. *** 1/2
Me before listening: "I hate Coldplay. All their music just sounds like high school motivational videos." Me after listening: "...Okay, they're actually not bad" Yeah, I didn't go into this with particularly high expectations given my dislike of this band, but I was somewhat pleasantly surprised when listening. Mind you, I could go the rest my life without hearing Clocks ever again, but that's beside the point. Coldplay shows pretty unquestionable skill here in creating appealing compositions and establishing emotions in their music. Arguably too much - the melodrama on this album certainly started wearing on me about halfway through. I still could enjoy the album overall though.
This album has a lot of critical acclaim but didn't do it for me. I liked a couple of songs but for the most part, meh!
Fun album
C’est bien, mais ça manque de mordant. C’est vraiment le Radiohead de Rythme FM
Some good tracks but not really a Coldplay fan and listening to this did not change that.

BritPop - what else
I definitely don’t count myself as as Coldplay fan, but I had a brief period around 2005 when I was into sad indie and emo music and some Coldplay songs got in there too, mainly from the X&Y album. I listened to today’s album. I didn’t mind the trip down memory lane to those days…. Almost 20 years ago apparently! Damn, time flies. Sometimes it’s nice to revisit & discover things that are not on regular rotation. I guess that’s why I like this whole 1001 Albums thing.
Can this album really be over 22 years old? I don’t think I listened to it at the time, but the singles are still as transcendent as ever, especially Clocks. I will always associate this particular sound with that era, just past the turn of the millennium, when the world seemed a relatively hopeful place.
I was prepared to absolutely hate this, but it's honestly completely inoffensive. I didn't hate any of the songs and I wasn't mad that I was listening to it. For this and likely many albums from 2000 on that are on this list though, the question is whether it was fair to add albums that had only been out for a couple years prior to publication (original list came out in 2005). Like, are the list authors really saying that they thought the newest Coldplay album had as much staying power as a Miles Davis album that was already 50 years old?
The first thought I had was “Oh it’s like Damon Albarn if he hasn’t gone to create the Gorrilaz!” That down tempo melancholy vibe that runs all through the album doesn’t let up, and it really did remind me of why Coldplay was so promising before Yellow kind of crashed the party. 3/5 sad English men.
meh. me aburrí con varias canciones, sólo me gustó 'God Put a Smile on your Face' y ya. pwne.
Pu Coldplay please.
Better than I thought. An enjoyable record. Geniuses, they are not.
Rating5/10 I've always thought Coldplay were a bit pretentious, that hasn't changed but this album was alright
"A Rush of Blood to the Head" is the second studio album by British rock band Coldplay. The music on this album made greater use of the electric guitar and piano than their debut. Commercially, the album was successful hitting #1 in the UK and #5 in US. It was also mostly critically acclaimed and won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. "Politik" opens the album dramatically with pounding drums, piano and guitar. It slows down with lead singer Chris Matin singing softly. It does the back and forth and builds as the song progresses. That's a common song structure throughout this album. It's about a reflection of the world at this time. A chiming guitar highlights the first single "In My Place." How you're put in the world and deal with it. "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" has a melancholy guitar and overall vibe. The music is subdued but builds to a chorus. The band continues the melancholy in "The Scientist." A song influenced by George Harrison and about girls. A strumming acoustic guitar, piano and string are added. A pretty good guitar solo and another song that builds momentum towards the end. Swirling piano keys and strings again begin their big one "Clocks." This song was influenced by Muse (I guess I see that). Contrast, contradictions and urgency. The album closes with "Amsterdam," one of my favorite songs on the album. This song maybe does the best job of the soft-loud-soft dynamic and builds towards a climax at the end. Its about someone at the end of their rope. Yeah, these are all, well constructed and produced songs. The first five songs are still US radio staples. The one thing I noticed while taking notes is that I was basically taking the same notes for each song. Not bad but maybe that's the problem, nothing too exciting either. Kind of vanilla. They were a great concert band then and I'm sure they still are. This is an album that if you like solid adult rock songs without too much of edge is for you.
An okay album.
Decent. Emotional lyrics 3.4
Just can't get the hang of Coldplay
I listened to the first half or so. Clocks good
Coldplay's "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" is like a nostalgic journey, a time capsule that transports you back with its chill, early 2000s vibe. The album opens strong, frontloaded with iconic tracks like "The Scientist" and "Clocks," which are as recognizable today as ever – thanks in no small part to that unmistakable piano riff in "Clocks." However, this album is more than just its hit singles. A track like "Daylight," the least listened to on Spotify from this album, stands out with its captivating string section, proving that Coldplay's strengths lie beyond their simpler, pop-oriented tunes. This contrast between their more developed tracks and the popular hits showcases the band's ability to weave complexity into their signature sound. The core of Coldplay's appeal, however, undoubtedly lies in Chris Martin's distinct vocal quality. His voice adds an emotional depth to their music, though not every experiment with it hits the mark – as noticed in "Green Eyes," where the prolonged notes might feel a bit grating. While the album doesn't necessarily feature standout lyrics, it's the overall sound and feel that leave an impression. It's the kind of album that's worth putting on rotation, not just for the well-known hits but also as a soothing background ambiance. "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" is a testament to Coldplay's enduring appeal, balancing pop sensibilities with more intricate compositions. It's an album that will likely appeal to both long-time fans and those new to the band, perfect for both attentive listening and as a soundtrack to your day.
very nice
Easily Coldplay's best work ever. Once tou hitnplay, you ll go till the end. Solid record
Mostly good background.
A lot more varied than what you'd expect from their songs that get played on the radio. A pleasant surprise, with some pretty decent tracks on it. There's a sense of sincerity to the album that some of the later hits just completely lack. I quite enjoyed Politik, God Put A Smile Upon Your Face, Daylight and A Whisper(!!). Really enjoyed the guitars on that last one especially! 3.5/5
Scientist and Clocks I knew already. Clocks is probably my favourite. Besides that it was just a bit too long. If it was more compact i would've given it 4 stars.
Pretty decent, clocks is well known for a reason. Bit of a long album, fairly neutral about it.
Not a real fan of Coldplay but a listened to the entire album.
Decent album. None of the tracks really stand out. The first half is strong but it begins to drag on near the end, a change of pace or some shorter tracks would've helped. Their Spotify streaming numbers blow my mind, I don't see the mass appeal.
It was okay, if you're into sad, angsty music. To me, it all sounded the same. Not my thing.
Meh. The singles are great but nothing else is memorable
+Popig, teils pompös. +Gut produziert. +Viele Hits dabei. +Schöne ruhigere Stücke. -Bei Coldplay muss ich aber an Stadion Konzerte denken. -Nicht meine Musik
Solid album but not really my favorite style. Some fun hits to rehear again for the first time in a while, but probably won’t be going back to it again.
As far as Coldplay go - this is their peak. I find Chris a little whiny but they are decent songwriters for the pop genre.
One of their best but still found myself bored by a few of the songs. Find it all a bit of a dirge.
You know what, I think this is the first time I've ever listened to a Coldplay album. I knew some, enjoyed others, but don't think I'll be rushing back.
Some undeniable songs and some droning, bland stuff
It seems like they traded musicality for big sounds. But who can blame them for making millions of dollars
Habe ich gerne gehört. Gefühlvolle Musik. Einige Hits, aber nichts zum rocken.
Mellow, easy listening music.
i get the popularity but it isn't so much my jam
It's hard to be objective about this one. It was released as I was going through a bad time in my life and a lot of these songs remind me of that time. There are a few good tracks on here, and you can't deny the obvious hook of Clocks, In My Place etc. My favourite one off here is probably Warning Sign, which seems a bit more raw than the tracks destined for the masses.... ...and I think that's my main problem with this album in general. While I thought Parachutes was a genuinely well-crafted album with some great songwriting, I can imagine the pressures of writing the "difficult second album" drew them to producing something that, on the whole, is safe, bland and...beige. I'll give it 3 stars - there's some obvious songwriting quality on here, but the relentless pursuit of mega-success is what spoils it all.
Politik, nice music to acompany a car into the sunset. The scientist is of course wonderful but listened to quite a few times already. Clocks as well great song but not new to me. Overall a very nice composed album.
very safe, easy listening. couple of great all time radio faves here.doesn’t really get me going though.
I spent a lot of time with this album as well as "Parachutes," around the time they were released. I don't remember now why I liked them so much back then. Perhaps this style has become so prevalent that it no longer sounds unique. Perhaps I just no longer relate. Listening now, I still appreciate the title track and a few others. 3.315
It is a mellow indie rock/pop Album. It's not my cup of tea but i can understand if someone likes this, because the music seems honest. Chris Martin isn't the strongest frontman vocally, he doesn't stand out and overtime his voice gets kind of annoying.
Just because they're popular doesn't mean they're bad. Do I think Coldplay is overrated? Sure. But I also think they've largely made pretty good music. 3.5.
This record means a lot to a lot of people. This may sound like a boast, but this was the first time I have listened to this full album and it left me feeling rather ambivalent with a twist of sadness. So, basically a day at the office.
Never listened to an entire Coldplay album but I have heard most of their hits Ok why does the Scientist make me emo still T-T its so nostalgic I think I get why these songs are / were so popular, the hooks are great and sooooo catchy but you arent going to like listen to this whole album over and over again theres not enough variety I do really like Chris Martin's vocal tone and delivery - I feel like it really carries some of these songs because the instrumentals are so minimal and repetitive I get why some people dont love it but I also dont understand the visceral hate, I feel like these people are just very pretentious and they like to hate anything thats hugely popular
boring four chord bs but listening to it while driving panny to and from the vet, and he seemed very soothed by it so okay
I kinda like this…
Not my favorite but it is manageable and well written.
Seems lostenable
Nov walk through forest park
Not sure about Coldplay but a couple of bangers. Very emotive
I played this album exhaustively through 2002 to 2005, it was a difficult time in my life, and I found these guys such an easy listen and this is probably my favourite album of theirs. Yes there are a lot of filler tracks on the album, they're not the first group to do that, but I still find their earlier music more palletable than later commercial tracks.
Very solid album. Not my personal preference so I don’t see myself revisiting much, but worth a listen for sure.
Fine does drag on a bit at at end
As far as the album goes, while I didn't love it there's definitely more to like than i'd expected. There's a number of enjoyable songs which were mostly big singles, which isn't surprising from a pop group. "The Scientist" and "Clocks" were the tracks I was most familiar with, and they did end up being two of the better tracks, both very soft and generally bittersweet. I'd not heard "Green Eyes" before but it was one I came away enjoying most. My main issue with the album is that it definitely shouldn't be nearly an hour in length. At such a runtime, the very similarly styled tracks do start to wear off in enjoyment, and there are a few towards the back end that just blurred into each other despite being generally nice listening. Either way a surprisingly good listen.
Already listened to this one! I'll track my notes from it down but I liked it well enough. Coldplay doesn't quite do it for me but there's some good stuff on here.
Couple great songs and a lot of meh songs. Love the Scientist and Amsterdam but I could take or leave the rest.
Haven't thought about Coldplay in years. One of my earliest music-memories, always playing on the radio in the car as a kid. They're much more vibrsnt and have greater variation in tones than I thought. Great rediscovery!
The big hits are actual bangers. Musicality is strong throughout. Not “anthem-esque” as I expected. While the supporting songs are not nearly as strong as the AM radio tracks, they do complement the album well.
Clocks is a banger. Never cared for the scientist. Overall I think it's a boring album that was good for its time but has aged not as well as the debut Parachutes, which felt more defining and had a much more memorable sound.
Solid. Enough.
Solid.
Not as good as Parachutes
some good melodies
I can never really decide if I like Coldplay or not. There are songs I'll sit through when I hear them on the radio like Clocks or The Scientist but just to see whats coming after. listenable album but Chris Martin really shined on Coming Home with Kanye.
It’s fine. Clocks is a damn fine song at least
Rating: 7/10 Good album, I really liked it overall. Really pleasant album to listen to, the piano, guitar and vocals are very good. The singles are all great, definitely the best tracks. The rest of the album is good too, it can be a bit boring and one-note though. Favorite songs: the four singles (tracks 2-5). Worst song: Green Eyes.
Schnulzensammlung
Pretty good Green eyes is my favourite song on the album
Classic
Not my cup of tea, although people loves coldplay and it is probably the best to someone out there.
Fun to sing along. I don't really have feelings for most of their lyrics and the music doesn't feel special.
I don't love coldplay, but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would
Honestly I'm not a huge fan of Coldplay. It's one of Jacks favorite songs though on the album. Over 1.5b listens on spotify, unreal.
Liked it. Clocks was already known, but the rest of the album seemed likable but not extraordinary
I'm not a Coldplay guy, so meh. Did I know a lot of the songs? Yeah, but it's a Coldplay album.
# 95 : Nice! I realise I like Coldplay. I like this album, some good songs on here. Would definitely listen to it again. Favourite Track : Clocks Listened : 25/10/2023
This sucked a lot less than I expected.
This is like the opposite of jazz. My very limited understanding of music and music theory makes the complexity of jazz tougher to listen to and appreciate what is happening. This is like popcorn. Extremely simple melodies, boring but inoffensive musically, pleasant voice from a lead singer, makes it easy to consume.
The highlights on this record are really good, but for the rest its just kinda boring. Those highlights i will be returning to tho.
indie-esque acoustic album
Politik- 8/10 In My Place - 7/10 God Put a Smile Upon Your Face - 7.5/10 the Scientist - 9/10 Clocks - 9/10 Daylight - 7/10 Green Eyes - 8/10 Warning Sign - 7/10 A Whisper -8.5/10 A Rush of Blood to The Head - 8/10 Amsterdam - 7/10 TOTAL - 86/120
meh
Tröstender Stadionrockpop, Ein paar Filler Unhassbar. 3,5/5
3.5
meh
One of Coldplay's most boring albums. 6/10 Fave track: The scientist
Great album, atmospheric and emotional. Just not my 5 star music, a few songs in the tail ain’t aren’t perfect to me.
Stop after the hits
It was fine. Nothing special
Here lies a sadness only a post 9/11 american landscape could create.
Coldplay is very hard to get in to for me. I recognize that their early work is objectively good, but it just seems to one note and typical. Not my favourite, but musically it is good. I feel it lacks substance.
Opener was good, the hits are decent, the rest was nothing special. Not really my thing.
I start it off thinking I might give this 4 stars, but by the time the song ‘Whisper’ came on, I was annoyed down to two.
I don't have strong feelings about this either way. S'alright. I could hate on it for being so consistently mid-temp-y and for Chris Martin getting into plaintive gear and staying there the whole time. But that would require effort. It's all right for what it is, I guess, though I shan't be listening to it again anytime soon. One song is OK. A whole album is too much.
I always liked The Scientist and Clocks (and Yellow … another album) but otherwise I don’t have much to say about this band.
Middle of the road, but some nice songs on here for sure. Favourite songs: God Put a Smile upon Your Face, The Scientist.
Ok
This album includes the most iconic songs from Coldplay, and it's at the same time their worst album. Besides "Politik," they can't go too far on the "Coldplay's standard." It's sad that this album is on the 1001 list when I think their newer releases are much better, even if they do not include many iconic songs.
Actually one of their weaker albums IMO
Sure was a popular album
Go white boy go!!!
I am genuinely shocked at how much I did not love this album. I remember it very fondly from my childhood but maybe I never listened in full? Even though clocks is probably my favorite song by Coldplay, the rest of the album felt insufficient to have an effect on me. I guess this is what growing up really is :(
You already know all the knocks on Coldplay, I will not repeat them here. I don't really care for them, I don't hate them outright, this is probably their best album.

To make it clear: I like Coldplay. They've always been considered a bit of a 'Marmite' band. You either love them or hate them. While I wouldn't go that far in my admiration, I don't mind a listen now and again. This album has some big hits on it as well as some good instrumentation. A pleasant listen.
Yeah, it's definitely Coldplay
Really liked a couple- Green Eyes, Amersterdam, and Clocks is fun too. Some of them sound really similar to me, a little down-beat for my taste, though well written
For a time I really liked this, and then became embarrassed of having liked it. Will I come full circle? Let's see. Update this slaps
I remember Coldplay being quite popular amongst many peer groups, and especially some musician friends, in the late 00's and early 10's. There were some musical aspects I enjoyed like subtle, surprise bass lines, but overall I would say I was rather whelmed by the album.
Was fine. Love the classics, but the rest were too noisy and lost.
Liked hearing it again, probably won’t listen to it for a while.
Ok album, but wasn't really at the edge of my seat all the wat through. Kinda has some songs I like but also some I just kinda lost my attention for the music a little bit
The album was better than I expected. Politik and God Put a Smile upon Your Face are really nice, but it also contains songs that are so boring they make me want to skip ahead 10 seconds in. All in all ok
Great sound but can become a bit of a drag after a while
I'm not sure if this 4 or 3.say what you will but it is well produced. Clocks is a great track, but then I don't really like The Scientist, it just drips with this supermarket sadness that bounces of me. Similar story with the other tracks.
I like Coldplay. I hate that I like them, but I do. That said, I don't think this is their best album, but it's still good. I would have rather seen their debut on this list - but maybe I will later.
3/5 Best: The Scientist Worst: God Put a Smile Upon Your Face
“Oh my God! It’s Coldplay” said no one ever. I like to pick on them because their music is very bland but this is a decent album.
Not my first listen, but still a good album. I long for the days before Coldplay went the way of Maroon 5.
Not my favorite, which is ironic since Coldplay is extremely successful. But I guess it’s too mainstream for me.
Complex, yet bland. Daring, yet boring. Fantastic, yet somewhat uninteresting. A double-edged sword. (Probably a grower)
Me gusta este disco
It's a GOOD album but I'm quite bored of hearing it. I don't think you get bored of really GREAT music
Fairly bland, but stil better than some of their more recent work. I liked it at the time, and still do, but it's not even quite good enough for 4/5. Sorry Chris and the mannequins
actually ok
Just not for me
A slow warm trickle.
This album bumped up one star for the singles that are on it which pull at your heartstrings. That said, all of the songs sounded the same to me.
An acceptable album. Nothing too special.
I mean I was never big on coldplay but this is an okay album. I obviously liked the very popular songs on it, but most of the time it's just the band trying to sound like radiohead, but they're just not as good.
It's not my style generally but I recognise this is a good album with standouts in Clocks, God Put A Smile On Your Face, Daylight, and a Rush of Blood to the Head.
While not as visceral as their debut album (Parachutes) this effort sees Coldplay continue to explore their more sensitive and "mellow side". While no one could ever say they were dark, the subject matter and music style has shifted from angst and longing to sadness and general relationship confusion.
Starts well, then tails off just in time to remember you're listening to Coldplay. 2.5
Love to hate. Hate to love. But this is their album. Can’t deny it. Pop rock wasn’t doing very well in the early 00s. Lacked direction while lacking balls. Coldplay might have spearheaded that movement, probably meaning they inevitably get tarred with the same brush. But some of these pop tunes are timeless… as much as anyone hates to admit it. Sot In my place God put a smile on my face The scientist Clocks 3.5/5
Yea coldplay
Way better listen than I anticipated. Pretty dreamy almost gazy parts in some songs. Decent 3 stars, very deserved
Honestly pretty good, I liked it better than I expected though still found it to drag on a bit. I remember listening to Clocks a bunch back in the day. Overall the album felt well-polished but not very ambitious.
I heard about half of the songs before. And while they're good songs, I don't like them. I didn't like the songs I didn't know before either. I never thought about why, but while listening to the full album I found a couple of reasons. The performance in general sounds very lazy to me, unexciting. The singing makers me want to yawn alinea. And all songs are a couple of bpm off of the ideal tempo. Favorite song: god put a smile upon your face.
It's fine, but I broke up with them soon after X&Y, so I'm kinda anti-Coldplay
The first half is genuinely great but it really runs out of steam after Daylight; A Whisper is the only track past that point that really stands out and everything else is just so bland. Also what is that weird Oasis impression he tries in the chorus of the title track?
It's like the B-side to Parachutes
Not Coldplay's best. Favorite tracks: Clocks, The Scientist 3.5/5
In middle school I knew a guy who was obsessed with his idea that you couldn't be both a fan of Coldplay and Red Hot Chili Peppers. I don't think he was even trying to make a temperature pun. Didn't appreciate his brain enough back then.
