Reviews (page 5 of 8)

Only listened to the original tracklist or CD1. I think it subconsciously says a lot I did not want to listen to another hour of this, even if it wasn't that bad. 3/5

Good funk

Super funky and cool songs, super distinctive voice.

Ok. Never a massive fan but some funky grooves

à réécouter

Thoughts before listening: These guys are fun and put out some 90s bangers. I don't really know any of their non-hits, but I'm expecting funky, upbeat tunes. Review: European white boy disco funk is how I would categorize this. It's pretty good I guess, although its not the album with "Virtual Insanity" which would have been a welcome recognizable track. There are some nice, jazzy extended jams like "Music of the Mind" that I am enjoying here. All in all, its a perfectly enjoyable, non-offensive album. 3-stars

Funky, groovy, full of soul and great beats…starts w a couple of bangers and then gets a bit weaker, but still an incredibly enjoyable listen

I was never much of a Jamiroquai fan first time around, and Emergency on Planet Earth is one I’d somehow managed to avoid. After Travelling Without Moving left me bored back in the day, I’d quietly assumed the debut wouldn’t be for me either. This album is far better than I expected. It’s loose, vibrant and full of groove, a heady mix of funk, acid jazz, soul and disco that feels both playful and purposeful. The musicianship is brilliant particularly the bass lines, which bounce and glide through the tracks with confidence. There’s an infectious energy running through the record that makes it an easy, enjoyable listen from start to finish. It might not have converted me into a lifelong devotee, but it’s certainly earned another play in the future. Favourite tracks: Too Young to Die and the title track Emergency on Planet Earth are properly funky, full of swagger and groove. Least favourite tracks: Every track justifies its place. Album artwork: Fantastic yet simple. Bold, striking, and very much of its era without feeling dated.

Sehr gute Fahrstuhlmusik. Instrumental am besten.

If you ever wondered what Stevie Wonder would sound like if he were white. Honestly not that bad but his influences funk and soft jazz were little bit too on the nose to really stand out. "Whatever It Is, I Just Can't Stop" is my only real highlight of the album I love the funk wah guitar groove on it. But if I'm totally honest, Jamiroquai ran so JT can walk. (7.1) ★★★½

This Jamiroquai album is alright. The first track was my favorite, and it's not bad, but outside of sounding a lot like Stevie Wonder, I'm not sure this album is something I'd be super eager to listen to. The bass is cool. 3 stars.

Albo prosić DJ-a, aby puścił trochę funku. Niestety trochę traci momentum pod koniec krążka. Końcowo wychodzi takie 6.5/10 równane w dół.

This one was funky and fun, which made it a mostly enjoyable listen. The style sounded like it came from a few decades before it did. Interesting that it's some British white dudes. Is this what you'd call blue-eyed funk? Despite liking it for the most part, I didn't really love it. It's longer than it needs to be, which the 8+ and 10+ minute tracks toward the end didn't help. And I think it probably stood out more due to when it came out rather than its quality. If this was around at the same time as some other major funk/dance records, would it still be considered a must-listen? I'm not so sure about that. Also, I thought I'd only known Jamiroquai for Virtual Insanity before this. After getting a through few songs on here I felt like the voice was familiar from something else, and... I am now realizing they made the dance song from Napoleon Dynamite. Too bad that's not on this album or I'd probably rank it a tad higher just for the memories. Overall: 3.1/5

Really liked this. Will relisten for sure!

A lot of good songs but it really starts to drag on after a while

Decent, not earth shattering. Low 3

Unique voice. Good music. Didn’t stay on the scene long enough.

The album manages, somehow, to be both funky and bog-standard. Hmm. Might be closer to 2.5 than 3.

pretty easy listening

I actually think I like Travelling without Moving and A Funk Odyssey much more than this first album, and I am surprised this one is on the list and not "travelling without moving". This was still enjoyable though.

1. When You Gonna Learn? - 10 The sax is amazing, the beat is amazing, the bass is amazing, the lyrics are amazing. This is such a great and fun track. The flow is quintessential Jamiroquai. It's a stellar song. 2. Too Young to Die - 9 The messaging is brilliant but so is the actual composition of the track. Instrumentally it's a fun track but it's very well done and enjoyable. The lyrics are quite good too and easy to move with. Overall, superb. 3. Hooked Up - 6 It's a good vibe but it's definitely not as strong lyrically as other tracks. Little bit of a pass over track. 4. If I Like It, I Do It - 6 Lyrically it's a bit stale, especially in the choruses. Having said that it's an awesome funk track with an excellent guitar solo in the track towards the end of it. There's something to enjoy in the track but it's nothing phenomenal. 5. Music of the Mind - 6 Is a purely instrumental funk track. Is a good listen. 6. Emergency on Planet Earth - 8 Solid fun track. Lyrics are a bit repetitive at times but still quite a bit of fun and the first verse is excellent. 7. Whatever It Is, I Just Can't Stop - 6 Another good-but-not-great track. Lyrically it’s very good at times and other times it’s absolute cheese. The entire premise of the track is pretty cheesy as well. Instrumentally it’s very enjoyable though. 8. Blow Your Mind - 6 So there's a lot of inconveniences with this song. First off, it should have been two tracks, one for the singing and one for the instrumentals at the end. Then we get into the lyrics and the verses are incredible but the track descends into ba-dum-bum for far too long and there's no real chorus to link the verses together. Instrumentals are very enjoyable in both the singing and instrumental part of the track but the other issues with it make you feel like it could have been so much better. 9. Revolution 1993 - 5 It's just too long and boring a track. Flute solo in it is very good as are the instrumentals at the end of the track but it's just not overall a great track. 10. Didgin' Out - 7 Very good instrumental track to end the album. Very enjoyable collection of sounds through some very unique instruments and short enough it doesn't stale the track out. Average Rating: 6.30 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 3.15 Rounded Down: 3 Stars

Quite liked the title track, but without Virtual Insanity it isn't much to write home about. A diverting listen, some catch stuff, some mildly irritating musical instrument choices, a solid debut.

Has anyone ever heard anyone say "I'm a huge jamiroquai fan"? I don't think I have, yet most people will have heard of him. Who is his audience??? He seems to be an insufferable prick. Think a photographer headbutted him once, which was satisfying. Anyway, the music! It's actually not bad, wasn't any of the huge hits on here that he's synonymous with, but I recognised the first couple. But, it's pretty funky and instantly recognisable. Don't think I'd ever choose to listen to it though, and I think a lot of that is that is down to the fact I don't like him. Probably says more about me than his music, but oh well. Not sure a didgeridoo is ever really necessary outside of it's origins. 2.5

“This world is falling down around my ears.”

R&B/Jazz/pop. Not bad, but not notable. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a

too long, not for me

Funky and fun album. Easy listen. Nothing earth shattering to me though. 3/5

Pretty cool. Virtual insanity e sykt dope, men ikke på albumet her

relaxed sound, happiness

Interesting dance/beat music. Not necessarily my favorite of the genre, but it's alright. Virtual Insanity is prolly better.

Good stuff but not my jam

- catchy and funky, parfois expérimental mais la plupart des chansons c’est un good vibe assez passe partout - jsais pas à quel point les versions extended sont nécessaires, certaines longueurs dans l’album - meilleure chanson: blow your mind

Not something I would put myself on voluntarily as it's not really my thing, but it's a fun and easy listen. Funk is inherently a fun and instrumentals-focused genre, and I had fun and I enjoyed the instrumental parts.

very groovy, revolution 1993 is so good

*1993. English funk and acid jazz. *Sounds very 70s jazz/funk. *Fun album - I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. RATING - 6.5/10

I’m torn. The music is really fun and my kind of thing! But the lyrics… sound so recycled and like an imitation of “political” music. The singer’s voice is also way too happy while singing about injustice and violence which adds to it feeling inauthentic. Still 3 stars because the compositions are great.

I don't think I've heard any of the tracks from this album before. Jamiroquai are the sort of thing that I feel like I should enjoy more than I do. Maybe they're just a little too disco-ey for me or something? I don't know I just have a tough time getting into them. I have seen videos of them playing live before, and they seem to be more Stevie Wonder-ey in that context, and this album does have a bit more of that flavor. This is album is good, but not great.

Now what tf kinda bullshit is this. Oh never mind this is nice. I do like this album the music if very chill and vibey but is honestly not worth 2 hours. It's a very uniform sound and I'm just kinda blending all the songs together in my head. It's interesting but not interesting enough I fear. Oh thank god the second disc is just extra editions I would not survive another hour of this. Not a lot of comments it's just a chill guy. Is that a fuckung digeridoo track. What. Favourite: Revolution 1993 Least favourite: Didgin' Out

Jamiroquai is usually pretty enjoyable, and this is no exception. I probably would have chosen a different album for this list (the ones with “Virtual Insanity” or “Canned Heat”). This often falls into the trappings of the genre aka the songs go on for too long, but at least they’re good. They definitely deserve an album on the list, even if this one is only okay.

5/10 – mediocre

Not my typical style of music, but it was a fun (and fun-ky) sit down. 5/10

It's decent enough, but it did nothing to shake my belief that all Jamiroquai songs sound the same, and the blatant Stevie Wonder impression does get a bit tiring. It's also just bad luck I happened to listen to this immediately after Parliament's Mothership Connection. I will say, however, that it's great to hear some prominent didgeridoo. And Revolution 1993 was pretty great.

When I first heard this album years ago it was like sound candy. I fell in love with the track Blow Your Mind, which I still love today.

Enjoyable but very much just all one mildly forgettable situation

Pretty entertaining. Great funky dance beats, but a few too many instrumental tracks. For me, the lead singer is the feature, so having so many instrumentals just deducted points. I would definitely listen to other of their albums, but maybe not this one, in spite of the tracks that I did enjoy.

I don’t know if the kids do retro-futurism as much these days aside from yet another regurgitation of the 1980s, the eternal now that we live in. But, for a bit there in the 1990s, the throwback thing for Gen X was...the 70s: fashion, music, film, sensibilities (well, being big into weed), maybe some cultural libertarian streak based in that first crack at a me decade. But, some of it was mixed with ideas about what the future could be - flashy, open-ended, clean, all lowercase. Jay Kay fit right in there, creating music that was a revamp of funk (if not outright covers), delivered via videos and an aesthetic that hit ffwd to a future of sleek, slinky dance moves, the masses shrouded in gigantic hats.

Cool album, a great vibe and surprisingly complex for something so popular. I think it’s a bit too complex and wanky to be in to it for multiple listens but I’m looking forward to hearing more Jamiroquai.

I clearly had no idea what Jamiroquai was, and a two hour double disc album was a good introduction I’d say. I was dreading this based on time and number of tracks but it was fun! I didn’t save anything but much better than I expected. Strong 3.

Have never been much of a fan, but I enjoyed this, very creative, lots going on. Really grows on you.

It's fun

All Jamiroquai tends to sound the same, but I did appreciate the use of the didge in this album, that was unexpected. A reasonable funky output.

Funky!!

God!! Meeen meget Stevie klon 🦧

I'd say this album generally agrees with me, but also didn't jump out in any significant way on this first listen.

Groovy, funky, anti system, on aime. Chansons préférées : When you gonna learn? ; Too young to die

Who knew?!

High quality production value. Reminds me of a funky Stevie Wonder sound. Good party vibe 3.5/5

Voice so recognizable, sound, too. Rather monotone, feels like you know all songs when you’ve heard one. I know the late 90s stuff better, it has evolved but not beyond the original funky sound. It’s not bad, just more of a background sound. Probably fun live.

Kept me interested

Enjoyed the variety and funky sounds

The only time I'm expecting to hear a digeridoo on the 1001 (though I live in hope, obviously). I bought this album back in the day, even though jazz funk isn't really my thing. So 3* is a very good score in a very tough market.

Good stuff, skilled musicianship, but not really my sort of vibe.

Better than you'd think.

I thought I’d like this one more with how funky it is, but I got pretty bored with it by the middle. It was kind of like listening to the Superfly soundtrack but not as a good. Still some decent stuff here and there.

feels like a smooth 70s album ...

I could have done without the second disk but other than that it was an easy listen

smooth and silky and goes in one ear and out the other.

- Super funky and quite unusual for the UK mainstream at the time. Hadn’t really stopped to think about how impressive it was that this act was huge in the 90s. - Has some enjoyable moments but mostly noodles along for me. Good background music but not something I’m gonna choose to play. - Annoyed that I’m here with ‘Too Young To Die’ stuck in my head for the first time since the heady days of Now 26. Not happy. Need to listen to Mr. Vain now to complete the experience.

First Listen; 3; At first I didn't really like this album at all, but it grew on me a little. I'm still not really sure what to think of it. The songs are fun and upbeat, but at the same time, nothing really jumped out and grabbed me. Very funky. Favorite Song: Music of the Mind, Didgin' Out

Not bad, I like their other albums more

oke sehr klari stimm und DIDGERIDOO hahaha luca da sind eusi gschmäcker würkli chli andersch, es ischmer eifach ZU SMOOTH? chan würkli wenig degege sege aber bis jz forderets mich iwie nöd so usse? OK hooked up coole rhythmus if I like it, I do it sehr guete titel REVOLUTION ISCH FUNKYYYYY aber z lang lol HAHAH weg DEM didgin' out jaa s tutmer leid luca aber iwie hetsmi nöd so umghaue :(

Off-brand Stevie Wonder, very funky but nothing to write home about

Holy 90’s

Enjoyed it - got a bit bored after first 5-6 tracks but decent

Jamiroquai has a funky, psychedelic, electronica feel (that sounded Stevie) Wonder / EWF-esque) and a legit debut album. Title cut and Revolution 1993 gets them on the 1001 Must Hear List, and I agree a valid entry. I will check out more of their music. (3.3*s)

I've obviously missed the bus on Jamiroquai. Prior to this album I've heard like 3 songs and liked them all but never thought to throw them on in the background. I was very curious going in to Emergency On Planet Earth. They set the table with a very poppy hit that has a lot of energy and establishes the electro-funk sound. It holds on for another handful of songs that have really positive vibes. Remainder of the album has its highs and lows, but nothing I didn't enjoy. Jay Kay's vocals have a great allure and make you feel like he is just there making music and having a great time with some buds. Never heard of Acid Jazz before but it seems like a lot of fun paying homage to some foregone genres with a modern swing. Great blend of classic instruments melding with electronic funk with a modern-retro flair. Now that I've gone through Emergency On Planet Earth it seems like these guys might be right up my alley. If the rest of their discography is anything like this I feel like they'll have a new fan on their hands. Interested in checking some more out. 3.32 stars

Rich layers of instrumention, enjoyable if not all that impressive.

I've always thought I should like this band more than I do. But for some reason I just can't get into it. Its good music played well, just not for me. But still worth a 3.

Apart from when he goes into full on Jazz mode, I found this enjoyable enough. Great energy despite the heavy social commentary. It got the old feet tapping along and I even joined in with some Stevie Wonder-esque do-do-do’s. I can’t work out whether Jay Kay is a complete knob or not. I think he may well be. But if I judge the art not the artist, then it’s a 3 from me!

It's like someone found a tape of Stevie Wonder's unreleased demos down the back of his special grand piano playing sofa. Actually, as it is some sort of hero worship, it's bloody good. That bass playing is top stuff. The songs are all very well written and performed to perfection. But that said, I just can't shake the image of Mr Wonder wondering where the demos to his next six albums had disappeared to? He's hardly in the position to get the torch out and look. So, did the lucky recipient of the sofa demos repackage it all under some shit name? This is the sort of rubbish which revolves around my brain whenever I hear Jamiroquai's music. Sorry for the glimpse into the odd thought processes. But it's very good no matter the provenance.

Why wouldn't I just listen to Stevie Wonder

It’s Funk, but almost too polished — as if all the rough edges have been smoothed away. I found myself missing a bit of grit and rawness. And maybe this is just my problem, but “Virtual Insanity” was such a famous song that I can’t see Jamiroquai as anything else.

Funkier than you’d expect from a white British (and Portuguese) guy.

Talented if a bit repetative

Pretty good groovy background music.

Decent. It was better at the start compared to the end. It was soul-like, so I did like it for that reason. Some sounded like elevator music, but not bad elevator music.

The trouble with making music that sounds like Stevie Wonder, is that if it doesn't have soul it is nothing more than mimicry. For me, Jamiraquai doesn't have soul. So the album sounds great, but in many ways it is simply unremarkable.

The music is well-made, but it was starting to get a bit old by the third track for me. While I like the lyrics I can't say I love the rhythm of them

Music to roller skate to

Standout Songs: Too Young to Die Music of the Mind Emergency on Planet Earth Whatever It Is, I Just Can’t Stop

5 70’s groove thing

Ok he does sound a bit like Stevie Wonder. But the jams here are quite good. The songs are often extended with many jazzy licks and variations. There's fuzzy effects and wah, a good bass line... nothing to complain about sound-wise. But by the end it does feel like some of the songs didn't need that last revival/extension.

Even in the nineties Jamiroquai were an odd prospect, a skinny white man, usually in a stupidly oversized hat delivering soulful funk. Their music however exudes cool, regardless of whether there’s didgeridoos, strings or brass involved. The first two tracks are classics that instantly transport me back into my teenage years. Unfortunately the vibrancy lags over the duration of the full album and it becomes a bit repetitive.

I’ve always liked any of the singles I’ve heard by Jamiroquai, and this is the first album I’ve listened to in full, so I expected there to be a lot to like. Which there was. The album starts strong, is gloriously funky, and reels you in. However it didn’t take long for me to lose interest as the songs became too long, with far too many of them becoming instrumentals. Before I knew it, the album was over and I hadn’t realised, I was so zoned out and disinterested.

3 - pretty good

Emergency On Planet Earth is listenable but not my jam. It's music meant for a club experience I'm not having, and yet if a track or two came through someone's speaker I wouldn't try to shut it down. Revolution 1993.

Nice album

It’s all right

While the music is decent……it is just more of the same and after a while all blends together and becomes less appealing.

It was fine. Some good grooves. After a while it sounded like the cd they had on repeat in the stereo equipment section of circuit city.

Nice funky album. 2 and 5 are best songs on the album. The 9th song is a bit too long in my opinion. Props to the trompettist and bass player

Too young to die 🔥

Back and forth between “wow this is so annoying” and “okay white boy get some”

Levada Funk bem interessante, bastante Groove! QoA Adonis New.

I knew the name but had never given this artist any attention. I liked this. It sounded great and was fun. And to those 1 star reviewers above - you pretentious fucks! It’s not cultural appropriation or impersonation just because an artist happens to like and use other styles or sounds. It’s art. What have you ever done that’s worth a damn?

Not my taste, but I see the appeal. I did add Blow Your Mind to my music library, but IDK how long it'll stay there seeing as how its 8 befuckening minutes long.

I like this, also did when it was released. Different. Definitely in its own lane. Sounds very 70s. But also modern.

I mean... I like the energy, but I wouldn't really care for listening to it again 2.9

1993 e malandro milionário cantando “Fight the Power” não dá… beira paródia! Reduziu a nota. 3.5/5

-this was cool! been meaning to listen to something by Jamiroquai but wasn’t quite sure what to expect -it was a fun vibe first and foremost. made me want to dance. i was pretty high so maybe not 100% certain of what was going on during some of the weaker songs, they did feel a bit aimless. but i had fun, would listen again probably -Favorites are Too Young to Die and Revolution 1993

Not as bad as I thought it was going to be, in fact, pretty solid, but still not my thing.

Solid jams

Dancing, walking Rearranging furniture Babs is shopping I let the bird out of the cage

I never liked Jay Kay so as a 1st album in this project I thought- oh dear. Put the album on and was surprised how good it was. I’m giving it a 3 but it probably deserves a 4 and I am marking it down just because of past prejudice.

Holy Stevie Wonder! Man, this guy sounds just like Stevie. I remember this dude for his MTV video where he looks like he's dancing on the walls and ceiling while wearing some funky hat, but strangely don't remember his music or the song. Didn't think this was a bad album. A little too jazzy for my taste, but it had it's nice moments for some funk and soul and I really do like his voice. Not too bad for some background music while preparing budgets my managers. Nothing really stood out where I wanted to download, but overall enjoyed my listening experiences. I'll go with a 3. Everything sounds better after listening to Neil Young 3

Some songs are good!

I enjoyed this more than I expected, armed only with a knowledge of Jamiroquai's quite annoying singles from later in the 90s. It's quite out there in places, and has a really consistent vibe to it. It's only getting a low-ish three star mark, because it is a little much to listen to in album form, but I probably wouldn't be aghast if a song or two cropped up on a playlist and so on. And isn't that what we're all looking for ultimately?

3.4 1x remastered 2 disc 2h1m

Well, this was a tale of two halves. The first disc is a mixture of funky, jazzy poppy sounds that to me taken on its own would have been a perfectly pleasant album and a great place to stop. You then have the bloated, slightly indulgent second disc. Did we really need extended versions of songs on the main album? Isn’t that what deluxe editions are for? The weakest of 3s - a 2.5 if ever there was one.

It's an album that feels out of its time. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is strange that in 1993, someone thought "lets make a double disc funk and acid jazz album". I didn't dislike it, although it's derivative by definition. It felt like a congruent album and it faded into a pleasant background noise but at no point did any track jump up and grab my attention. At two hours, it is also very long. Too long, considering I don't think it said much in the last 90mins that it didn't say in the first 30mins (with an honourable exception made for the digeridoo track). Other than that, can't find much fault and my general disinterest is mainly a matter of taste.

not something I'd usually listen to which makes me pleasantly surprised. its funky/groovy, smooth. never heard of acid jazz. the synth goes like zweeoo wohmp wohmp.

Not sure on this. It's a lot and there is a lot of flute. Some would say too much.

Wish some of the songs were shorter, could’ve been a 4

3.75 These white boys don't do a half-bad funk impression! Honestly, impressed with how much I enjoyed this Jamiroquai album. Was ready to roll my eyes at the whole thing, but I had a great time listening to this. Singer’s voice is fantastic, and the soundscapes are well-produced and bouncing. Listened to it twice through!

This just made me want to watch Napoleon Dynamite again. But other than that - meh. It all kind of sounds the same. Napoleon Dynamite - 5 stars This album - 3 stars

Not for me, but not bad...

It's excellent Stevie Wonder cosplay, but I'll pick Stevie instead anytime.

Great vibe, just didn’t do much for me.

6.5/10 I enjoyed this. Bass playing was good. Highlights: Music of the Mind When You Gonna Learn

Where's my Jamiroquai music video recommendation? That's the whole point of Jamiroquai

Funk music is good and has some interesting bits but seems to keep pretty much to the tried and true. Lyrics are ok but generally not that interesting.

A tricky album to review for me. On one side, it’s shocking to see how much of this music is directly borrowed from or copied on 1970s Motown sound. It goes far beyond simple "influences", sometimes bordering on blatant imitation. For the European public of 1993, who had not necessarily been exposed much to such music, it may have sounded super original. But the fact remains that it’s by and large a repackaging and rebranding of older music for a new audience – not unlike what the Stones and the Beatles did in the early 60s to make a name for themselves. I know the line between plagiarism and inspiration can be a blurry one – but Jamiroquai stands right in the middle of that grey area, not without a certain dishonesty (and don’t even get me started on the ridiculously fake political posturing... Dude, you can’t call your "brothers and sisters" to "go paramilitary" when your main hobby is collecting luxury cars). On the other hand, one must admit that Jay Kay is an extremely talented musician / imitator. He managed to produce a carbon-copy of early soul / disco / funk music, down to the very details, the mood, the lyrics and vocal gimmicks. It’s so impressive that I almost suspect him of being a time traveller. Fortunately, he’s not *only* an imitator, and he did inject a few personal twists into the mix. The end result is a groovy, funky, jazzy album that I don’t find particularly original, but that is still pleasant to listen, and certainly did convince a new generation that music went beyond bland pop and commercial rock. So yeah. Good music, but please give credit where credit is due...

This was a decent listen, with heavy focus on being vibey. It is difficult to specifically choose a favorite track, as the purpose of the album seems to just be kind of losing yourself in a bit of a wiggle as time passes which I caught myself doing a fair few times. Overall, I would give this album a solid 3/5 as nothing really stood out but it invoked a little groove every now and again and wasn't a bad listening experience.

Hard not to tune out mentally when listening to this one. I like funky music but this wasn't my jam. Kinda came across like a Stevie Wonder rip off. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

I started out enjoying the funk of it all. Was less into the “acid jazz” (per Wikipedia) it veered off into towards the end. The messages in the lyrics were thoughtful but a bit clunky.

This was alright, probably wouldn’t listen to again

I get the feeling their other albums might be better?

Full disclosure: I regularly wear a bucket hat. Not gonna lie, when the didgeridoo solo happened on the opening track I LOL’ed. Good job, Wallis Buchanan. Enjoyable overall, almost my thing, but not quite my thing. I can understand their huge album being included on this list, but I’m not convinced this album deserves to be included.

Did not give Jamiroquai their due back in the day. Fun R & B. And yeah. Going to bed. G’night.

I thought I would enjoy this a lot more than I did. Definitely an interesting mix of jazz with eletronic music, but it felt a little lacking to me. The songs were fun but lacked weight. No real standouts. Overall- decent album

Good album but too long

Was good - too long. Felt too grandiose

It's a fun listen, but not enough to make me want it on a playlist. Maybe they'll grow on me.

2.5 meh, sounds like Jamiroquai. Album is interesting enough and the musicianship is good but nothing really hooks me in

point4.

If I like it, I do it. Lol. Nothin wring with that. Plus Napoleon Dynamite.

None of the specific songs I like are on this album, but the sound is certainly there. Funky. This is a 3.5 kind of album.

Groovey baby

The fact that they didn't give me the album with his most famous song is just... Well, you know what cheesy pun I'm attempting.

nice, but I prefer other albums

Really nice. They got better, but this is a good start.

:( couldve been better if it was just stevie

A little too much didgeridoo! Its OK, but I'm probably more of a 'Jamiroquai's Greatest Hits' kinda guy! Pretty hard following the Pixies album - Doolittle

I actually didn't mind this, pretty funky for most of it. I didn't listen to the second disc that was in the linked album, just the original release. Some of the tracks maybe went on a bit and overall I prefer Jamiroquai's later stuff.

Jamiroquai walked so that Bruno Mars could walk slightly faster. Once again, we are presented a debut album when the subsequent album (the one with an international smash hit song) is the far better choice.

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Emergeny on Planet Earth, Revolution 1993 This was pretty funky. Good to put on for a while and sort of half tune it out while working on something like coding or writing documentation. Easy to groove to. I could have done without the album being two hours long though. It would have been nice if there was a version of the album that didn't include all of the live tracks, extended versions, and demo of songs tacked on at the end.

I like this band but I didn’t love the album. Especially when there are couple of better ones out there

Fun album with some great performances- the bassist and keyboard are highlights for me. I don't know if it's the production but some of the tracks feel a little muted or kind of dull to me? "Hooked Up" is one; where it sounds muddy and "mushy" sounding because most of the instruments are playing short staccato articulations and pretty muted. It's a nice record that is a lot of fun, but I can't help but ponder about this inclusion on the list and not the album that has "Virtual Insanity", which I'm pretty sure is his biggest song by a long shot. I hope to see that one come up. Not to take away from this record though, as it's really a delight and a fun listen. Maybe only slightly a bit too close to some Stevie Wonder records, but I guess a lot of these albums are.

Catchy in small doses

Jamiroquai! v happy to get this. what other band has a didgeridoo player as a member? shit's awesome. also the Jojo Weather Report connection but that's neither here nor there on this album. less disco-pop and more jazz-funk than their later work, which may be a positive if you have a proclivity for that sort of thing. personally this is so clean and slick to where i like it more when they give in to the pop sensibilities and use those to play off the jazzy structures for maximum groove. but this isn't bad; not bad at all. deserves to be one of the 1001? i'm maybe a little surprised this was the one instead of Travelling Without Moving (Virtual Insanity ;-;). but i liked it enough to be ok with it since it means Jamiroquai gets on this list

I enjoyed Jamiroquai’s singles in the ‘90s. The ‘70s throwback aesthetic and sound is similar to what Bruno Mars did again in the ‘10s. But beyond the singles, the jazz funk of the rest of the album mainly bored me. Musicians are tight, but it is seems rather uninspired, and the lead is reduced to scatting along when he’s out of lyrics. This has been done much better elsewhere, like Parliament.

70s vibe. Songs got repetitive after a while

Cool, funky and vibey. Very reminiscent of Stevie Wonder!

I was excited to listen to this because I have always liked Jamiroquai. However, I realise that I was only familiar with the songs from Travelling Without Moving and the ones on this album felt less catchy. I found it got samey over time and wasn't able to pay attention to the lyrics so in the end didn't have the experience I'd hoped for. Rating: 3

Familiar with the band but none of the songs look familiar. The songs have pretty funky bass parts, horns, and organs/keys. Some turntablism and percussion. I have some trouble with the singer's affected voice. It feels like a put on. Might like this more if was a pure instrumental jazz funk album, like the song Music of the Mind. The intro and outro have a didgeridoo in them and they are both good. Can't hang with Revolution 1993 and its 10 minutes long.

“Mom! Can we get Stevie Wonder?” “We have Stevie a wonder at home.”

Cool sounds from the 70‘s. Very retro…I wish the singer wouldn’t try to sound like Stevie Wonder

Don’t hate it, just need to be in the right mood for it

Nice enough.

It’s very good. I thought the vocalist was a woman. It sounds very authentic to the vibe and aesthetic of funk. I’m really enjoying it so far. Music of the mind is a SEGA ass song.

Didgeridon’t

Ahh if only this was an album full of Virtual Insanity! Vibes were good, but far too many long instrumentals. Simpsons: No

Jamiroquai is played quite regularly on the radio, so I recognised some of the songs on this album. I probably listened to it at the wrong time of day, as it was a bit too energetic for 5:30 on a Friday morning.

Een mix van acid, Jazz en funk? sign me the funk up! FAVO: When you gonna learn, If i like it I do it, Music of the mind, Blow your mind

3 meritato.. 4.. no.. non ho messo nessun mi piace

Fairly enjoyable white boy funk. This band had quite a few popular albums, this wasn’t one of them. Shouldn’t be on the list

I used to quite like jamiroquai back in the day. I think it was the funky session musicians (bass, horns) that I enjoyed but overall can't disagree with the wishy washiness. Plenty skippable background stuff

I like his voice and the music is really excellent but it's too uninteresting to me to hold my focus for an hour .

I really enjoyed the bass player, I remember listening to them a little bit back in high school but surprised it’s been so long since I have.

Production and musicianship are second to none. I like a bit of Acid Jazz/70s Blaxploitation. I can appreciate it, but I didn’t really enjoy it after a couple of tracks. I don’t think I’d call them songs. There’s not enough structure. It’s more like amazingly tight jamming which was an ultimately bit boring.

I really wanted to live this more than I did. I really love psych funk jazz music, and this has all of those elements, but it just didn't go all the way for me. At some points, I was loving it, but I think overall it felt a bit watered down when compared to War or Parliament or Funkadelic. Maybe it was an element of pop to it that wasn't quite landing for me? I don't know, they're clearly really talented musicians. I loved the didgeridoo in the songs, that was sweet.

Fun white boy soul vibes. I particularly enjoyed the epic 8 minute long “revolution 1993” with its drumline. Even here 32 years later “it’s time for a revolution”.

Didgeridoo heavy, very Jamiroquia, very out there, acid jazz to the max

I've known Jamiroquai for a long time. I thought some of their songs were pretty good. The band was quite popular on my favourite radio station for a while. Later I found the music too hectic, acid jazz from kindergarten children on speed. I quite liked the album, even if I didn't become a fan of it. I don't switch off when I hear it, but I don't look for it either. 3/5

Surprisingly boring debut outing from Jarmioquai. The musicianship is impressive from a technical level, and I was happy to listen to it in its entierity, but could only keep thinking of how they'd been able to refine and improve the format going forward.

As homages to 1970s soul and funk go, this is incredibly skilful. There’s just still that nagging sense of “why would I listen to this when I could listen to the genuine article?”

Plenty of Funk and Soul, and yet, it doesn't really speak to me.

Apart from this being a very long album, it was not a bad experience having it playing in the background. Overall, nothing too exciting but it was alright.

Spaced out for a little at one point and thought I was listening to Stevie Wonder. Bonus points for the digeridoo.

This band has the groove and singer Jay Kay has a lot of soul. I like the jazzy aspects. An upbeat and enjoyable listen. 3.5/5

funky, not-quite Stevie Wonder

Didn’t know what to expect, started off quite enjoying it, groovy and funky, but did get a bit samey and started to grate a little. There’s no need for some of the tracks to be so long.

Funky groovy group making fun albums as always. This is not my favorite Jamiroquai album, but still decent all the way through.

This was such a funky album lol 😅 it was pretty good, again not someone who I've listened to a whole bunch but they are a very particular band and I just didn't get into! Overall it wasn't a bad album but it just didn't catch me lol

Some interesting instrumental layering on some tracks but overall pretty derivative

Trying very hard to be Stevie Wonder. Doesn't quite get there but it's a decent attempt. Fine but didn't blow me away.

Not my style exactly, but their funk is real and undeniable, and they have some cool fusion-y influence in there as well

Interesting mix of jazz and pop. Not particularly exciting for me. Not particularly bad, either

FFX2? I've got to be in the mood for it but I'm not mad at it. Very light.

Raging against the machine with a funky beat and a derigido.

Hard to put my finger on this. It is pretty incredible how much Jay Kay sounds like Stevie Wonder. There is a lot I like but those things are all the things I like about the genre from the 70s. I was expecting more fusion with the new and it just never really got there. An album doesn't have to be innovative to be good but I think it's still a missed opportunity. There are some tracks I quite like but there's a lot about this album that kind of rubs me the wrong way. Kind of like Greta Van Fleet, it's just weird to make music from a different era.

This was a weird album to come out at the time because I'm unaware of any other pop/funk/jazz albums to come out in the 90's that were this successful. People say that Jamiroquai has a really unique sound but I don't find that to be the case. They sound just like a lot of acid jazz bands back in the 80's and 70's just more palatable to the average taste (which is fine - no shade). They obviously take a lot of hints from Prince in general, I think Jay Kay is just less challenging Prince to be honest. All that said this isn't bad, but they take a lot of the long winded solo and instrumental stuff from more classic acid jazz music and just drag it on without doing anything really extraordinary. The first 5 songs are great, and then it just starts to sound mastrubatory. I liked the instrumentals and the inclusion of the didgeridoo, and the vibe of the whole thing is good. I just couldn't get through the whole thing without being bored. And I only listened to the first disc - I don't need live cuts and remixes of this. It's fine, and a testament to bringing "back" a genre from niche listeners, but I can't imagine listening to this for more than I did.

Fav: Blow Your Mind Least Fav: Hooked Up Special shout-out to the synths, they make the good stuff better and saves the average songs from being bad. Not bad for my 300th album

Yeah, almost certainly all kinds of appropriation but the albums is not bad, to be fair.

Sometimes when you’re crate digging, you’ll find a dusty record that you’ve never heard of before, that seems completely insignificant, and yet, the liner notes list great studio musicians whose names you kind of recognize, and because it’s just cheap enough, you add it to the pile. Then you get home, put it on, and are blown away. “What is this forgotten gem?! Why isn’t everyone talking about this?! Where has this album been all my life, I love it,” you say. You’ll then proceed to go down internet rabbit holes where fellow obsessed nerds also rank it as a ✨forgotten classic✨, you’ll spread the gospel to all your fellow music friends in real life, and you’ll have a hard time listening to anything but this strange little treasure you found, thanks to luck, or maybe even divine intervention. And then, one day, suddenly yet slowly, you’ll stop listening to it. No reason, really, you just…moved on. Normal, especially for a music geek. A few years later, you’ll remember it in your stacks, and, remembering how much you once loved it, you’ll put it on, expecting all those tingling joys to reemerge with the very first note. But as the record spins, you find yourself completely disinterested. What happened? Is this a bad album? Did your tastes change? But you still like bands like this? The issue is this: sure, you may have found a good album that was a good genre niche, but once the high of discovery wore off, you came to realize that the music itself is…not particularly special. It’s not timeless like the canonized classics, it doesn’t have a single that gets stuck in your brain for years, it doesn’t do anything unique or boundary-pushing or even display great chemistry. At its core, it’s nothing but great studio musicians playing tightly over good arrangements that never cross the line into greatness. That was what made it appealing, but tight musicianship doesn’t replace soul. Pastiche Bands™️ who become obsessed with long-gone eras (typically two decades prior) are like this, although now they’re late to the party and copying their older sister’s homework who graduated 6 years ago. At their core, Pastiche Bands™️ inspire the same feelings in the listener as the Forgotten Gem™️, but the high is briefer. This music isn’t based on the talent of originality, but the talent of imitation. It isn’t bad to listen to, but it isn’t memorable or impactful. The ‘90s especially had a lot of Pastiche Bands™️, mainly because the ‘70s were a great fucking time for music in general, and had a lot of decade-specific genres that were also critically praised. Jamiroquai are little more than a Pastiche Band™️, filled with excellent studio musicians making ‘70s funk/r&b, specifically derivative of Stevie Wonder, the greatest musician within this niche from that era. Emergency on Planet Earth is a very good reflection of that era. And, for what it’s worth, there are some decent attempts at original ideas here, whether it’s the more electronic-emphasis or the progressive lyrics. But on the whole, there’s always something missing in the execution, and the whole thing feels empty. On top of that, there is the flaw of ‘90s CD-era bloat, with almost every song overstaying its welcome. The absence of a hit on the level of “Virtual Insanity” also lessens the overall value of Emergency on Planet Earth in hindsight. It’s a pleasant listen while it’s on, but it doesn’t stick, and at times, its vapidness starts to even distract. Just listen to imperial era Stevie instead, or watch the video for “Virtual Insanity” and move on.

Bring that funk and soul

This was good but honestly kind of middle of the road, nothing super intrigued me about it, but I didn't mind listening. I probably wouldn't relisten

Upbeat and not hard to listen to, but highly derivative of stuff Stevie Wonder was doing much better roughly a quarter of a century before this came out.

This was really Funky, a lot cooler than I anticipated it to be. Jamiroquai has made an effortless blend between Funk and the House and other electronic music of the 90s. The brass band is nice and the basslines are really groovy. Didgeridoos are also a really cool instrument and a nice touch. I didn't mind this one not really having any Jamiroquai hits but I think the album falls off hard in the second part. The songs get a lot longer and not that much better IMO, it quickly gets to be the same thing.

This is music for a particular mood in my opinion. Enjoyable, entertaining and powerful album overall.

I didn’t finish the album(just due to time) but it was a smooth and easy listen. Not super catchy though.

6.5/10

It's... fine. Not particularly memorable. Not even 100% sure that I listened all the way through.

Quality pop dance collection anchored by solid white boy funk. A few memorable standouts too.

You know what I don't mind a bit of Jamieoquai but after a while it does feel a bit like relentless funk. It's a little samey but I don't not like it. It's just a bit of fun right

This wasn't bad but I found it all sounded the same to me, every song could have suddenly been Canned Heat and I wouldn't have noticed. But it does has funky beats and overall his voice gives it a different sound to anything else, problem is, it's all the same sound.

Weird funky and chill

close enough, welcome back stevie wonder

There's some definite positives - some great songs, plenty of energy. But overall I think it's just a bit one toned for my liking.

This isn’t even the one with Virtual Insanity on it! Don't really have a lot to say on this one. It's right in the middle of 2.5 - 3 for me. Nothing that really bothers me (except the appropriation) but nothing that really excites me too much either. It just makes me want to listen to Stevie Wonder instead. 2.75⭐️

I enjoyed it a good amount. It was better than I expected.

Funkadelic

Not quite sure why the didgeridoo was everywhere in England in 1993. The Poppies had it all over their minor hit Get the Girl, Kill the Baddies, the Levellers had it all over their No. 12 hit This Garden, Aphex Twin released a song called Didgeridoo, and infamous hat-botherer and car-shagger Jay Kay whacked it right up top of this. All in the same year. Late in the year Madonna sparked controversy by carrying around a didgeridoo while simultaneously being (sharp intake of breath) a woman. I'm not making this up And then the didgeridoos didgeridon'ted again just as soon as they had arrived. It was a little moment in time. So anyway, on the subject of cultural appropriation for a massive audience, let's move on to Jamiroquai. While that's obviously what he's doing here, I think it's fair to say it's done well with great bass grooves, and it gave teenage me a little window into funk and soul, which I would peer through and delight in the far superior stuff which Jay obviously reveres. And so for that I'm grateful. Plus there's a few genuinely good tunes (Revolution 93 probably the highlight) and it was funny to take the piss out of his ridiculous hats. Apparently he comes from very near where I live, but I don't like to shout about that. I mean, so does Morrissey. Also, he's at least talking politics in a pop record, which reminds you that people used to do that in the 90s before all that sort of stuff basically died, beyond more fringe scenes like folk and hip hop.

Dapa dupa bass and funky

It’s a funk phenomenon! Didgeridon’t. Nonsense spoken about cultural appropriation has minimal relevance here - almost all popular music is derivative in some sense. Arguments that everyone has to remain in their cultural zone limits freedom of expression, curiosity, and creativity. So long as it is respectful and progressive is much more important. Stevie Wonder did not arrive fully formed de novo, he was influenced by Marvin Gaye and a host of others. What matters is putting your own stamp on it. That aside, while I enjoyed the musicianship, it was a bit dull at times.

Really liked the vibe on this album. Had to look them up and their Wiki page had their genre classified as "acid jazz" which I did not know existed. Good enough to get a high 3, but I can't quite give it a 4.

i had a college friend whose favorite artist was Jamiroquai and who was always insisting we check out his back catalog. I never did until now, but this was exactly as expected.

The 90s were a fun time.

first impressions were: this was groovy, White Stevie Wonder!? But ultimately not nearly as great as Stevie himself, and the Jamiroquai frontman kinda seems like a POS after a quick google search.

Starts off fun and funky enough, had tunes out by end. Probs won’t return to really

I feel like I don't know enough about this genre to really judge. It was a fine album with good vibes and I don't regret listening to it, but I got the feeling that it was not the real thing, and that I could cast a line in a record store funk/soul section and pull back an album better than this pretty easily.

I don’t mind this, but it did go on a little too long for me. Interesting contrast between this and yesterday’s Black Flag album: 20 tracks, 121 minutes versus 15 tracks, 34 minutes. I guess I have a short attention span.

Funky, jazzy, lyrics generally nonsense. Definitely best when played loud 3.25/5

I'm sorry to confess that I like this more than Stevie Wonder, even if it is a massive rip off of his sound. Maybe just to do with what I was exposed to when younger...

It wasn’t bad. Nothing really stood out, though.

I don't hate this? I dunno. Some decent grooves here but nothing really great. I'm feeling nice so I guess it gets 3 stars.

It was okay. Became repetitive after a bit.

If you're going to be influenced by someone, Stevie Wonder is a good choice.

It’s funky but bit too long for my taste, I feel this could be condensed so that the quality remains high throughout. Low-key reminds me of Persona 3.

Fun tunes, none really stood out but all enjoyable to listen to.

Strong

Nice background music, but no song really stood out to me enough to want to listen to it again.

Somewhere between a 3 and a 4, but I probably won’t listen to it again, so it’s getting a 3.

I enjoyed this. Not as much as other Jamiroquai albums though.

This made JK a very very very very rich man. There's a lot to like about this - as a bass player it's a great listen, but it's also a bit of a polished - highly polished - turd. I saw these guys a festival a few years ago. Chic had just done a blistering hour long set that was all killer. Having a podgy JK bounce around for 90 minutes was about 81 minutes too long.

Not bad. This would have been great to see live.

I like, real groovy

Light, catchy, infinitely danceable. Pleasant listen.

Haven't heard this for years. Some nice sounds

Are we trying to recreate Songs in the Key of Life? Seems that is the formula for this group. Not to say it's bad but grow please.

Jamiroquai is not who I thought he was. I always thought he made R&B music in the vein of Ne-yo or Usher. This came way out of left field for me. This was more like Stevie Wonder. I liked this album, it was upbeat and funky and didn’t overstay its welcome. It’s not something I’ll listen to all the time, but I wouldn’t be upset if it came on.

I have to be in the mood for Jamiroquai, it's a good album, funky.

You can start to feel the vibe that will push Jamiroquai to success, but it just makes me forward to the possibility of another album of him coming soon later

It's right in the middle of 3 for me. Nothing that really bothers me per se but nothing that really excites me too much either except maybe the use of the dijeridoo.

I'm sure it's not bad just not my type

3.5-really liked it but couldn’t go 4 stars because it was a little redundant

very good

Unexpected pre-virtual Jamirquai 3.5

It's another ok but completely forgettable jazz album. Been very disappointed in their selection so far (not that I know much of anything about jazz) 6/10

This was really good. Only thing is some of the tracks could be cut down a bit and make the run time more smooth. This has a great instrumental background. It’s blends Funk with some Jazz and Dance Elements. This is something you put on lay back , close your eyes and let the music paint whatever picture comes to mind 3.5/5 (could be a 4, will take future listens)

Day316 - it’s fine, it definitely sounds like a jamiroquai album it doesn’t have the only two songs by him that i know but they all kinda sound the same

First cd big fun, second cd bit boring

groovy, but missing something I can't quite put my hand on.

Enjoyable 3.5

This album doesn't have his hit. Forgivable. This one is fine. It's fun and a little quirky.

Good listen. Some decent tracks.

Great funk album!

I was never a big fan of Jamiroquai, but having this album Play on YouTube music resulted in me listening to another hour and a half of live songs. I enjoyed it

Funky but a bit self indulgent.

nice, but in a certain mood

Jamiroquai very clearly have their own sound and explore it well. They've never been my favourite band, but it's a good sound and the album is decent.

A funk/jazz fusion album. I was not feeling this album today. On another day it would be better. There is nothing wrong with it, just wasn’t feeling it. Standouts: If I Like It, I Do It, Emergency on Planet Earth, and Revolution 1993.

Some nice funk, but derivitive of better stuff from the 70s. I do like some of the later hits they put out
