A bit same-y at times; great record nonetheless

A pleasant, funky album. "Blow My Mind" is pretty groovy. "Revolution 1993" is 10 minutes and flows well throughout. Conscious and jazzy songs.

Stunning debut from Hat Enthusiast Jay-Kay and Band.

I was already familiar with this album. Still gave it another 4 listens. It's a funky acid jazz vibe with a bit of a big band sound to it at times. Stand out tracks - When you gonna learn? - Too young to die - Blow your mind - Emergency on planet Earth - Revolution 1993

Really fun funk album. I've heard the name Jamiroquai before, but never knew they were a musician. 4/5. Favorite Track: Revolution 1993

Jamiroquai follows in the steps of Stevie Wonder in terms of the confident vocals and busy orchestra based on overlaying synths, horns, and strings based on funk and jazz. Tight production, really fun and good vibes with a fist full of energy. I did feel overstimulated and annoyed and wanted things to slow down. His scats are mostly to blame: there were some lovely melodies I just wanted to enjoy but his voice kept getting the way. "Music of the Mind" and the latter half of "Blow Your Mind" were really nice instrumental breaks. There are a ton of highlights here. So many cool tricks. Tracks could be cut down, and there were a few weak tracks that had very little to offer (beyond a couple gimmicks that got tiring on re-listens). But overall clean, impressive, and certainly innovative for its time. For that, I do feel more inclined on edging for that 4th star.

This one of those cases where I really like the music but let's be real an absolute and at times an embarrassedly bad Stevie Wonder rip off. I hope Jay Kay has thrown some royalties Stevies way. It is fun and I really can't help myself, I really like it and regrets never going to see them in the late 90s. I think Space Cowboy and Traveling without Moving are better than this one though.

I had fun listening to this. I love this disco/funk revival stuff from the late 90s / early 00s. I did find this album a bit hollow, and there are better options out there for this style of music.

Acid jazz, soul, funk. Muy animado. Un 4.

Obviously highly influenced by Stevie Wonder, and why not? Excellent grooves and danceable songs, even if the environmental message is heavy-handed. Magnificent bass and keyboard playing.

Super fun record. Looked them uo and was cool to see all the different hats and whatnot they wear during performances. Would definitely listen again.

Stevie Wonder? Never heard of him. Seriously, it seems very obvious that Jamiroquai is channeling Stevie Wonder. Not that that's a bad thing, because there are some things in there (hip hop and funk-jazz) that are incorporated well into the songs. The 10 minute opus they had (Revolution 1993)... I did not feel like it overstayed its welcome. That's always hard to do with some of these tracks, and yet it just zipped along. Really enjoyable stuff, but if you are not a fan of Stevie Wonder this is not going to go over well.

This one was a really nice surprise. Was not expecting British white boys to make good funk.

I like me a bit of funky Jay. True it can be a bit samey and retro but there's didgeridoos on this! It's a good vibe and happy music

Decent. A lot of modern sounding Jazz

4/5 Good Start, gets weaker

Very very good album

Very good

Pretty cool. Not really my style though

Who doesn't love some funk? A great album carried by 3 awesome tunes. Nothing better than Jamiroquai to brighten your day!

Lekker funky, en met een goeie boodschap. Toffe plaat

Great sound, great groove. Not the hits I know but a nice find!

Solid funk jams

The introduction of massive hats to popular music.

absolute awesome vibes

This album is just really fun and especially funky, the bass is great and the instrumentation is really interesting. It’s very refreshing compared to some of the classier soul stuff from the 60s and 70s

It swings and grooves sufficiently, if a little monolithically song to song, to make the politics non-preachy and also without getting all synthetic and clubby. But of course one could ask whether the danceability is right tone for such an urgent environmental warning (not that he'w wrong, of course, and if only we'd listened 30 years ago, huh?)

English Funk is great Jamiroquai is good at it. Not 100% solid. But 80% excellent. Makes me wanna dance.

I’m back from a long holiday, and have really enjoyed reading your reviews of key albums that I missed (after all this time, Abbey Road drops right before I get back???). I’m not going to be able to keep up the daily pace, but will try to review some. So, Jamiroquai: another album on my “really ought to listen to this someday” list. And it’s pretty much as I expected: instantly appealing, enjoyable, but somehow not quite as compelling as I’d hoped. I could try to analyse why, but life’s too short. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Had never heard this album before & thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s so often very funky. I love the didge. I love the brass (e.g Hooked Up). I love the nod to Stevie Wonder in so much of it, including calling a track Music Of The Mind. It rockets along & is never boring. Fantastic.

long live the digeridoo. fav songs: too young to die, music of the mind, emergency on planet earth.

Genoeg geluld over randzaken.

Really didn’t know what to expect, but it was pretty good. Obviously influenced by 70s jazz/funk/fusion but well executed and original.

This distinctive voice of Jay Kay and Jamiroquai style is instantly recognizable and creates an amazing funky atmosphere. This is my first time listening to their debut album in full, but some of the songs will definitely end up on my "for party" list. At times it was slightly too repetitive, with songs blending with each other, but the general reception was very good. Excellent stuff.

Much much better than I expected

Great funk collection

It's pretty cool 3.5/5

Uptempo funky goodness

Solid funky outing, light 4

Steady jams all through. Horns, drums, consistent pleasant sounds Like his voice too. May have to grab this on vinyl

Pretty enjoyable and funky album. I really like the lead singer's voice too. It fits very well.

super funky, catchy songs. every song on this album is a banger and pretty much no filler. love the instrumentals on this as well. breaks up the album nicely stand out tracks for me were Hooked Up Whatever It Is, I jUst can't stop

Solid debut filled with fun funk.

What a surprise! Sounded fresh, yet could've come out in the 70's. I enjoyed it.

Groovy and funky

Enjoyed it, was looking for something along these lines for a hot minute.

Really fun album, I love the mix of vocal and instrumental tracks because it really makes it feel like you are listening to a set being put on somewhere. Combine that with the funky jazz and odd instrument choices (shout out to the didgeridoo) and it really has a unique vibe.

Very interesting, I am a fan of Jamiroquai’s vocal style and the upbeat feeling throughout the album with some “slow song” breaks. Definitely a good album to jam out to. Tapers off as it goes, but string overall.

fun, funky production throughout. also utilized sounds i don’t hear often in the music i listen to

Revolution 1993, what a banger

I love me some Jamiroquai.

It swings and grooves sufficiently to make politics seem non-preachy.

This album rode out from front to back. Especially like the live tracks from Glastonbury. The music I always knew they could make, but never heard.

Modern jazz

I forgot how happy this band makes me when I listen.

At its best, this album traces back to some of Stevie Wonder’s more memorable tracks. At its worst, the lyrical content is kind of eye roll worthy. Funky as hell though. Not sure Jamiroquai ever got their due. Vote for Pedro.

love jamiroquai. This isnt their best but its still a very nice funky time. lyrics can be cringy though

The music is your good old fashioned easy listening funk. Nothing wrong with it. The album is a bit too long as a stand-alone listening experience.

I have listened to Virtual Insanity before and liked it so this album is pretty similar in a sense. The instrumentation/production is really good. I sometimes really like the lead singer's voice and other times it can be annoying (kinda like red hot chili peppers but not as bad). The production may just carry this album to a 4 for me even if the singing would otherwise put it in the 3 range. This album has a 10 and 8 minute long song on it so that might just knock it down a whole score. Unless it has a drastic movement change in the middle there is no reason a song should be that long. The thing is I like Revolution 1993 (the 10 minute song) but man it kind of overstays its welcome. Could have easily been 5 minutes shorter and nothing of value would have been lost. The last song on this album is a didgeridoo song called Didgin' out... that might just bring this back up another score

this is good. it's like persona music. that's my favorite anime.

I really liked the funky jazz vibes this album was putting out. I also liked the singer's vocal style a lot. Having only known them for their hit song "Virtual Insanity", I was pleasantly surprised by their music. Would listen to again.

Funky town

A fun sexy jazzy funky time. Any time that Bari honks I am cackling

Happy and upbeat. Sounds like young Michael Jackson with a hint of activism

Funk. Interesante.

Fun album.

Loved this when I was a teenager

It's Jamiroquai, c'mon. But really, enjoyed the album. Never really listened all that deeply to a Jamiroquai album before and only knew of the popular songs. Good music to work to, not overly stimulating but had enough musicianship to keep things interesting.

älskar jamiro

This kind of Funk is what I need time after time, original and uplifting

Appropriation aside, they definitely got the groove.

Solid album.

He wants to be Stevie wonder so badly

4/10, 40%

Excellent arrangements the falsetto and tight jazz instrumentation make for a great synergy. Has some really funky lines as well as kick back lounge pieces. May have set me on a path down acid jazz lane

Groovy and very funky and

I did like a lot of it, but the guys voice gets on my nerves a bit near the end. Still a fun listen

I like my funk.

Maybe top 10 of 1993 when it came out in... not sure now. Bass and drums are ultra cool though, and the sporadic trumpet(?) solo also rule.

I enjoyed this one. None of the songs were that memorable to me but overall it was good.

Funky and hip

Lots of fun on this one! This is definitely an evolution of a certain branch of jazz showing the future in 1993. Hard to describe, but easy to listen to

Light 8, not as good as other albums, some bangers but not as many as I hoped for

ah another blast from the past. Pretty sure I have this CD still. This was the jam in the summer of 93 or 94. Which is funny because, otherwise, I was totally into alt-rock, grunge, metal at the time. Now that I've listened to SO MUCH Stevie Wonder through 1001 it's unmistakable the amount of influence he had on Jamiroquai. This album is really timeless. Great funky grooves!

Omg revolution 1993 is sooo good I love this album i'll be sure to check more of this band

Gotta love Jamiroquai, even if this is basically a Stevie W Ripoff in so many ways.

Makes me want to go to a festival

Its some really decent deep cuts shit. 4/5

Good album, nice and chill. Will probably listen again if i want something nice and smooth, would make great background music for a chill evening, though I'm sure there's lots to be gathered from a more focused listen through.

Of all the music acts that appeared in the 90s, Jamiroquai undoubtedly is one of the better ones. Their brand of acid jazz funk music grabs attention immediately, the mix of expertly arranged songs (just listen to these basslines!) and frontman Jay Kay's slick vocals make for an intriguing package. The songs themselves are good, but they would become better - truly great - on later albums. But this album is where it all began, and deserves a listen. 3.5/5

Þið skiljið ekki hvað Jamiroquai er góður fyrir lappirnar á mér. Get ekkert hlustað á þetta án þess að dansa. Svona funk acid jazz type of thing er algjör fíkn hjá mér.

Super interesting record. I’ll listen to more.

Ei parasta antia, mutta perjantailevyksi erittäin toimiva. Jamiroquai toimii aina hyvänä tunnelman nostattajana.

Disco Disco

A favorite. This is arguably the best Jamiroquai album when they were really at their peak. The music had smoothened from the earlier albums and was more authentic than the later ones. Sometimes the rhythmic juxtaposition and transitions aren't very listenable and I think that's heard the most on 'Hooked Up' and 'Whatever it is, I Just Can't Stop'. 'Too Young to Die' and the flirty 'Blow Your Mind'. Nice album to revisit. Always pleasant, enjoyable and fun. Great driving album.

Damn. I love Stevie Wonder. ♥

Damn I judged this album unfairly, but it's actually very good. Electronic / funk / jazz mix? Super cool concept and don't think I've heard anything like it before. I feel like this would've been very ahead of its time for the 90s; even now it seems really fresh. Definitely will be getting this on vinyl at some point.

this was a really fun listen! the title track was my favorite

I haven't heard this album since the 90s and I had forgotten how excellent this music was. Great musicianship, jazzy fun funk grooves with a 70s feel, hard not to dance to. I might listen to this one again.

Quite a variation of styles, good album.

Super fun, but the bloat really dragged it down, and Jay Kay's vocals becoming grating after too long dragged it down a bit further. But... the surplus of didgeridoo shot it back up a good deal, not gonna lie.

Yes - very funky.

Very funky, lets go dancing

Quite enjoyed it and I've learnt how to play funk guitar from the guitarist of this band (although he isn't on this one).

Enjoyed it, funky grooves (in the words of AOK)

heavy funk and jazz, with some politics thrown in. fairly solid, even just as background noise. ideally 3.5, rounding up

Some vocal similarities to Steven Wonder, but it's great regardless. Feels pretty timeless as well with the production. Favorites: When You Gonna Learn, Too Young to Die, Music of the Mind

Love the mix of funk and jazz

this is my new go to funk album

Pretty good, only a couple songs sortof stuck out for me though.

This was pretty cool retro, Stevie wonder type album at first but the last two songs really elevated the whole thing. They were the perfect blend of 70s r&b and modern stuff, especially revolution 1993

6/13/2022 - ALBUM #137 Today's Album: "Emergency On Planet Earth" by Jamiroquai - This album takes no time getting right into the thick of it with a blaring didgeridoo before welcoming in a groove so funky it sounds like Stevie Wonder and a vocal performance to match. That opening track introduces a lot of the ideas that are going to be all over this album like systematic inequality, unintentional discrimination, and the dire needs for not only civil rights, but a total revolution. These messages not only dig into the American discrimination of African Americans, but also tap into the inequality of people living comfortably in America compared to those living off of very little in 3rd world countries. All of this is presented, though, through some of the funkiest tracks I have probably ever heard. It really sounds like Stevie Wonder's and Michael Jackson's bands crashed into each other and started laying down some sick beats. Although the background of this album is a little concerning, with it being a lot of traditionally black music being sung by a white man, but when you look at the members of this fairly large band, it's clear that this band spans many cultures and is inspired by this kind of music more than simply ripping it off. Every track balances it's great sound with a ton of really great lyrics of social justice and the entire time I just kept thinking about how much it relates to today despite coming out 30 years ago. The struggles we are facing in America today have been experienced by people around the world for so long and it often takes an album like this to show Americans how privileged they are. There are many times where it can be pretty heavy handed with it's messages, but it's never too up front with it that you can't just sit back and enjoy the fantastic instrumentals. Great production work all around and the mix is perfect for this genre, with the bass and funky synths way up front. Overall, this is a really great statement album in protest of a lot of injustices going on around the world, but it's also an incredibly fun, groovy, and above all else funky experience from top to bottom. Listen to this album if you like Stevie Wonder or like an album with a deep message contrasted with an enjoyable sound. Highlights: When You Gonna Learn?, Too Young to Die, Hooked Up, "If I Like It, I Do It", Music of the Mind, Emergency on Planet Earth, Blow Your Mind, Revolution 1993, Didgin' Out Score: 8/10 Puts the fun in funky and the pro in protest

4/5. Funky, fun, very Stevie Wondery. Damn enjoyable

With this album, Jamiroquai does what generations of English musicians have done before them. Take music originated in America and not as popular as before and put their spin on it and make it better. 4/5.

Favorite Tracks: When You Gonna Learn? Too Young To Die Blow Your Mind

Very very funky! Love it!

The early Jamiroquai is the best... as a 14-year old I remember loving Blow Your Mind, and I can still get the chills listening to that song. Great album.

I liked this a lot. It’s funny, I had Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life a couple days ago, and this is sort of like a more modern version of Stevie Wonder. Some great grooves. 4 stars.

I was jamming to this entire album.

innovation clearly present, a fresh different vibe. 8.5

listened to again probably one of the funkiest debuts of all time

Really good funk

Always enjoyed Jamiroquai. Not the most memorable of their songs but still funky!

Really dug these funky beats

Always enjoyed Jamiroquai. Not the most memorable of their songs but still funky!

I like the first song; cool Stevie Wonder vibe. This continues to sound a bit like knockoff Stevie Wonder...but in a good way. Okay, the didgeridoo at the end is a bit much, but on the whole: solid Stevie Wonder cover band!

Kinda tough to judge this. Ultimately, great music, great funk, great songwriting, really great musicians. I don't want to take away from those things. However... much of it is so similar to the likes of EW&F, Sly & TFS, Parliament, etc. There's no doubt where the influence came from. They've certainly added their touch. I really like it, but struggle to find the differences. It's not quite as difficult in their newer stuff. Traveling w/out moving, virtual insanity, canned heat. Those stand out to me.

4.4 - This album captures that 70s soul/funk vibe perfectly. The band sounds impeccable with Jon Kay at the helm. It's impossible to not hear the Stevie Wonder parallels although this album eschews some Stevie's emotional depth, maintaining a non-stop party tempo throughout.

Bangin

This was a great album, in terms of study/background music. A few great tracks but some were a bit more forgettable. Having read about his car collection and his Top Gear time, I’m going to give this guy another shot!

Certainly enjoyable and iconic of the era.

Like the dance scene in napoleon dynamite, I don't know what's going on here, but I think I like it!

Fun, funky... great precursor to Travelling Without Moving.

Hits the mark musically and enjoyed the vocal styling. Almost 20 years after release, much of the message seems dated. Overall, a very good listen.

Jamiroquai! Now there's someone I haven't really thought of in about 20 years, but boy did I love them when Travelling Without Moving came out. I'm not familiar with this album, but it's a jazzy, trippy, fun listen. Heck of a debut album. Jay Kay is a solid vocalist, full of energy and soul. He gets the Stevie comparisons a lot. He's not quite that good, but he's a lot of fun to listen to. Love the funky, jazz inflected arrangements. Strong Earth Wind & Fire and Sly Stone vibe, which I love. The politically driven songwriting doesn’t go super deep, but by 1993 pop music standards they were actually ahead of the curve. Fave Songs: Whatever It Is, I Just Can't Stop; If I Like It, I Do It; Emergency on Planet Earth; When You Gonna Learn; Didgin' Out

JQ isa bit of a guilty pleasure of mine- a thorny replacement gene in my side. A work truck I used to drive had a CD on constant rotation- it grew on me.

The funky soul tunes remind me of a refreshed Stevie Wonder and the jazz tunes show that the band knows how to play. They play a wide range of styles and even mix some disco in with funk in Revolution 1993 and, I hate to say it, but I like the disco bit too.

I got so tired of hearing Virtual Insanity back in the day that it was hard to be objective on this. Jay Kay always sounded too much like Stevie Wonder to me, but really, you don’t have that much choice who you sound like, and it’s better I suppose than sounding like Leonard Cohen. On closer listening, the arrangements really stand out. The band is tight, the sound is smooth and sophisticated. The instrumental jam is a bonus. The song-writing is unstructured and free flowing, though some tracks go on for a bit longer than they should. I know some reviewers poked fun at the socially conscious lyrics, but that to me, was a more a sign of the times – protest bands in the 60s and 70s were praised not mocked.

* sounds fresh, good quality remaster.

Nice. One of thousands of Stevie Wonder followers, but a pretty good one.

Very cool sound, the hippest elevator music. Some sounded a bit futuristic.

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: When you gonna learn?, Blow your mind

viciante, brabo, funk e jazz. É ele

Very lively music, great rythm section. Good songs

I did enjoy this album. I definitely see the Stevie Wonder influence throughout this album. And the didgeridoo? I was not expecting to hear one of those. But I did feel a few tracks were a bit weak, and didn't vibe with them as much. And some of the tracks were a bit too long for me. Highlights: When You Gonna Learn?, Too Young To Die, If I Like It I Do It

Jazzy, funky and greatly produced. Worldwide stardom was still awaiting for Jamiroquai but they were already up with a good start.

A lot more than the one not wonder I thought they were.

Not my fav Jamiroquai but it still rules. Incredibly funky, lots of fun. 4/5.

Jam band with soul.

It's Jamiroquai, you either like it or you don't. There was only one extra good track for me on this one and it was long (might just be spotify version though)

Good vibes. Fun

Lovely! Good vibes :)

This is pretty great, I feel like it's every Jamiroquai album but still great

Dog nogle fillers

I have no idea how jamiroquai even made it big, given the musical time period they were coming through. It's a great album

Bien aime le electro jazz. Ca sonne bienje l’ai ecoute deux fois 4.25*

Just some perfect chilled out funk. Loves me some Jamiroquai

Másters del funk.

Pretty high energy and engaging all the way through the first disc. I've enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would do; especially impressive given it's Jamiroquai's first album.

It’s good! It’s funky!

Such an underrated artist! This album was lots of fun to listen to. I’ll be listening to it again soon

First track has a great rhythm right off the bat. Love the groove of the whole album. Basically a precursor and probably huge inspiration for The Dirty Loops.

really alternative and fun!!!

Funky bass notes!

Honestly, I was ready to go into this and hate it. I remember Jamiroquai as a schmucky doofus who had that Virtual Insanity song and the cool video where he was walking funny on a multi plane treadmill. This record is more akin to a funk protest record, and with a couple quibbles I have in a couple spots this is entirely listenable and would be great background music for a party and would fit into a playlist with the likes of Stevie Wonder or Parliment. Nice surprise.

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this album.

I liked the fusion sound. Definitely hear jazz influences.

I can't claim I listened to the whole thing (two hours what) but I did listen to a lot of it. Acid jazz is a real genre-bending kind of music and this album really takes it to the next level. I think there's a didgeridoo in the first song? It's cool, not much more to say.

I really like the first song when you gonna learn. I also like too young to die

I like Jamiroquai.

Funky grooves

8/10 wasn't anything crazy but it was musically interesting and a fun listen. i'll be honest when i saw it was a british funk band i was skeptical but they did a good job.

It's a decent album with some good tunes. Bit sullied by how much of a bell Jay kay became. Gets a bit samey towards the end

Jimiroquai Broadbent knows how much this slaps... Nah seriously, it's super cheesy, it's definitely of its time, and Jay Kay is an asshole. But I can't deny that this album is loaded with a fair few bops.

Funky but honestly kinda boring. Still gonna give it an 8 just based on the sound.

Great. Nineties nostalgia trip

Jazz pop interesting. Kinda diggin the vibes on this album

Good. Got a little tired towards the end

Stark 4a!

Toe tapping. Funky. Smooth. Nice sound stage. Decent instrumentals

Funky, good background music to work to.

jamiroqual

Great album. Some iffy songs later on but solid.

It's pretty good but goes on a bit

I like the 70s groove.

much more jazz heavy and off beat than the singles compilation I used to listen to. pretty good

Listens away nicely, no complaints. Nothing I'll revisit soon.

Stevie Wonder Bread.

Do you need to hear this album before you die? No

The songs aren’t bad but we get it dude you like Stevie Wonder we all do.

Funky grooves and jammin beats - but not very interesting to me.

639/1001 2026.06.18 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Revolution 1993 is a banger as it gets more up tempo. The rest of it just inoffensive mid paced standard Jamiroquai stuff. Their second album is better for me.

Funky Jamiroquai. Nice little album to groove to but nothing spectacular.

I'm familiar with Jamiroquai, but mostly for the song "Canned Heat" (which is not on this album). As someone who either taught or took dance classes, "Canned Heat" was a staple in pretty much every dance studio in the late 90s/early 2000s. I love the funkiness of this band and this album. Super fun to listen to. But, as with several other albums I've come across on this list, the album is just way too long. I really enjoyed it for the first 30 minutes, then started to lose interest for the last 20 or so minutes. A couple of the songs at the end just seem to go on forever, and don't seem to go anywhere. Great music. Fun songs. It would be a great album to put on as background when you're cleaning the house or doing some other chore where you could use an extra pick me up.

Better than expected. Unexpected 70s funk from the 90s that pretty much just works.

People are complaining that this is too derivative of Stevie Wonder, but I'm over here like "Wow! Two cakes!"

It's ... different. Not bad, I have added it to my library, will need to listen more but I am giving it a solid 3.

To Young to Die супер. Whatever it is I just can’t stop сподобався.

I should like this more but I don’t

A lot going on in acid jazz. But kinda good?

This is probably good background music for something, but whatever it is, I didn't do it today

We know that Jamiroquai are always dependable for a good time but sometimes they can outstay their welcome and it just becomes okay background music.

Too much Jamiroquai

I will continue to deep dive into their discography. 3.5 The pop and jazz combo had me entering flow state.

I learned a lot about Jamiroquai from this one - did you know that The Hat Man is not “Jamiroquai” but the front man of the BAND Jay Kay. Anyways, this isn’t Traveling without Moving, 3/5. (I quite enjoyed this, but I think it’s secondary to the followup).

This was a fun listen. I'm honestly just glad I got something that doesn't suck today.

Absolutely nothing about Jamiroquai should work. - by this point in the album generator I’m wary of anything British no matter the genre - but the idea of “British funk” should particularly set off alarm bells - Jay Kay has like ten different Oh No vibes about him (the wrong kind of hippie vibe, the seconds away from some kind of racial appropriation vibe, the why does he keep dressing like that vibe, car guy vibe, thinks he’s Bono vibe, don’t leave him alone near your drink vibe, etc) but I love this ridiculous band and I have for a long time. I’d argue maybe for A Funk Odyssey or Dynamite in place of the debut but the debut has more didgeridoo so I can’t really complain. As a full album it might only be getting a three though. Hard to ignore how many songs feel like Stevie Wonder cover band performances and I don’t think they’ve quite figured out the band identity that creates songs like Canned Heat, Corner of the Earth, or even Virtual Insanity

This is pretty great listening but gets penalized for being a blatant Stevie wonder ripoff

Greta Van Fleet is to Led Zeppelin as these guys are to Stevie Wonder. Right in my Q Zone so I can excuse some of the other issues. 3.5

This started super funky but ultimately suffers quite a bit from the dime-store white Stevie Wonder wannabe as the frontman.

Nice, feel good album. Not typically my go to by I like Jamiroqui so I could listen to this again

Fun but not my genre

Album #163 Jamiroquai: Emergency on Planet Earth Funk is one of those genres which exists more in spirit. Outside of Funkadelic, or anything George Clinton touches for that matter, I can’t really think of anything that I’ve heard which is strictly funk music. There are bands which do jazz funk, or funk rock, or funk rap, but nothing which is just strictly funky. Jamiroquai seem to be no exception to the rule, as their music has some very obvious jazz and soul elements; however, the only word I can really think of to describe this album is funky. It’s a pretty beaten cliche that all you need to do to make black music accessible to the mainstream is have a white guy perform it, and Jamiroquai would seem to almost comically align with that trope. One of the biggest bands of the 90s, a decade of grunge, alt rock, and hip-hop, made it big playing jazz, funk, and soul fusion. Maybe it was because of the white guy dressing like a rastafarian that made people feel comfortable listening to it, it is pretty clear that Jamiroquai are actually a pretty talented band, and does their influences justice. Though I find the lyricism a little too on point sometimes, with their fight against the man style of hippy doctrine (really, everything about this band is out of the 70s), the lead vocalist does have some undeniable charm that prevents the songs from drifting into straight cringe territory. The instrumentals are also consistently groovy, and despite an abundance of didgeridoo, I never really found myself tiring from it. That being said, the album certainly gets lost in the jam at points, and the consistency starts to blend with monotony, particularly around the middle, with the woman on vocals. This is definitely an interesting album and a cool exploration of genres, but it’s more of an album that I would throw on in the background to groove to, rather than actively listen. Best Songs: When You Gonna Learn, Too Young to Die, Blow Your Mind Worst Song: Didgin’ Out Score out of 10: 7

j'aime bien la vibe mais bof

Maybe I should give this another chance. It felt really flat in places, like they were still finding their feet, but it has a unique sound.

Skönt gung

A great funky album. Never listened to any Jamiroquai before. I dug the lyrics about the problems in the world. That seemed to be what they were singing about the most. And this was in 1993, how prescient it was. I didn't know what to expect from it, but it was largely enjoyable. Very funky, jazzy, and the bass player really knows what's up. The instrumentation is varied, but it does kind of bleed together, unfortunately. I enjoyed my time with it, but I don't know that I'd necessarily revisit it.

Overall: 3.05 (rounded to 3) Consistency: 3.2 Originality: 2 Enjoyment: 3.5 Virtuosity: 3.5 1. When You Gonna Learn? - 3 2. Too Young to Die - 4 3. Hooked Up - 3 4. If I Like It, I Do It - 3 5. Music of the Mind - 4 6. Emergency on Planet Earth - 3 7. Whatever It Is, I Just Can't Stop - 3 8. Blow Your Mind - 3 9. Revolution 1993 - 3 10. Didgin' Out - 3

Upsides: The musicianship, especially the rhythm section. Downsides: 1. The Stevie Wonder tribute band nobody asked for. My god I hadn't noticed so much before. 2. Jay Kay is such an irritating twat.

I like the style but found it hard to put together a full listening session.

Copia blanca de Stevie Wonder. Correcto

I don't get what everyone's didgin' out about.

Groovy, mom “retired”, I was tired. Went to bed early.

Acid-Jazz, RnB, Funk, 1993->3

fun listen, didnt really like his voice tho, instrumentals were amazing

I liked the funky parts more than the jazzy parts. But I also found it a bit repetitive and not that interesting Standouts - 3/5

Musically pretty good, I just find the vocals infinitely annoying

alright

Ihan jees levy. Parhaat: Blow Your Mind, Emergency on Planet Earth

Just fun

I had never had heard it before just a song here and there. Like it better than their breakout album. Much more solid and hard for acid jazz. Loved it

Pretty spacey white boy jazz funk that’s fun, but it’s good to know they went in a more focused pop direction after this 3.5/5

Funky, cool

ehhhhhhn.

I remember seeing the video this band had on MTV from a later album where they dance upside down or you could say on the ceiling a la Lionel Richie. This album is much more of a cosplay (to say it nicely) or imitation (to say it in a mean way) of Stevie Wonder. But here is the thing Stevie Wonder is so great that if you copy his singing style and have it over some good music you end up with an album that is at least pleasant to listen to. Contrast that with all the other copiers/cosplayers et al that you have on this list looking at you Amy Winehouse, and I can't get overly upset and criticize too much. I would probably normally rate this as a 2 but I feel generous because accompanying music is of quality and Stevie Wonder is an all time artist. 3

The bass is doing a lot of the work to earn these 3 stars. Its a little bit cornier than I remember.

I quite like Jamiroquai’s music from time to time, but listening to a whole album in one go is apparently a bit too much of a good thing. Three stars…

Jamiroquai always puts the dance in my pants.

Stevie Wonder knock off. But done right.

Don't know that acid jazz is high on my list of favorite genres, but I could groove to this one.

Im not saying this to be edgy, or funny, or controversial. This is not a value judgement and honestly I'm not really 100% sure what I mean, but: this is the whitest music I have ever heard.

I'm not listening to this for 2 hours. That would be a real emergency.

Could never get in to Jamiroquai. Not one I would choose to listen to

Somewhere between Didgeridoo and Didgeridon't

7/10 Funky! Not my preferred genre but you can tell it’s really good music. Some of it sounds a little Michael Jacksony to me. Seeing this live would be super cool. Favorites: too young to die, emergency on planet earth, music of the mind, revolution 1993, when you gonna learn (live)

It’s good. The musicians are great, I like to listen to it all, but it’s not something I would put on regularly

Surprisingly convincing 70s Stevie Wonder impression from some white Englishmen in the 90s, but, like, we could always just be listening to a 70s Stevie Wonder album. Not sure why this gets a separate spot on the list. Oh well. Not a bad time

Cool arrangements, tight playing, yet something about Jamiroquai gives me the ick. I can't put my finger on it. I should love these albums but I just dont. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

3 stars It’s derivative of a lot of the music of the 70s but does not feel corny or cheesy (most of the time). I can see what the fuss was about back then.

5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Lightweight Stevie Wonder with 90s production values. Good but not essential. Best use of didgeridoo I've heard.

nice album!

It's a fun sound, but it does not need to be 55 minutes long and it doesn't need a digeridoo track at the end.

It's funky, but it's missing the soul good funk has. Nothing to make you stop and have a full-on funky moment.

I think they liked Stevie Wonder! bang on jam/jazz/funk/acid rock. maybe not done to highest quality consistently, but there's some fun vibes

I can't believe that this project convinced me to listen to a Jamiroquai album that's not the one with Virtual Insanity on it

An enjoyable listen to have playing in the car on a nice sunny day while driving around.

I think if you are into this very smooth funk, jazz style, this would be a really great album. That's not me, so y'all get a three.

Terrific, fun funky stuff. Might warrant a 4 after I get more familiar with. Heard of this band, but this is a first-time listen.

Excited to get Canned Heat, but got disco Stevie Wonder instead.

Reminds me of Stevie Wonder. Some delightful funk/soul tunes but I just couldn't get through the double album.

Never felt the emotional connection — felt like the music and message were not aligned. Got a Stevie Wonder vibe. Talented, but didn't catch a spark.

The grooves are cool, and I do like the old-school vibe, though it wore a little thin after a while. Also, aside from that hit, the compositions were a bit lacking.

Thought it was decent

I haven’t heard this album for soooo long, we were right into them in the early 90s, and sa them around 92/93, funny, it’s good - but dated, but hey ho

Standouts When You Gonna Learn If I Like It, I Do It Music of the Mind

6.5/10 - If I hadn’t heard Stevie Wonder and SITKOL I think this could be rated higher. I can see why some people might not like it, but I think it has a good sound and is a fun album to groove to. I think it sounds too similar to SITKOL to the point that I would never pick this album up again because it doesn’t differentiate itself from or surpass the original work.

I like the funk and the vibe of this album. I think they sound a bit like Stevie Wonder (basic, I know) towards the front half of this album. They really set themselves apart in the back half and the didgeridoo song is unique. 7/10

I don’t do guilty pleasures, I like what I like but despite a 30 year relationship with this album I do feel I have to justify my views on it. Yeah it isn’t original or crucial, but it’s fun, gets you moving and whatever you think of Jay Kay his voice is soulful and fits well in the agile disco funk. Is it life changing? No Is is it worth your time, absolutely

One of the most unique things I've ever listened to.

You can't really go wrong with these guys and their brand of upbeat disco/funk/pop. This was enjoyable front to back.

Jamiroquai - Emergency on Planet Earth A really well performed and energetic jazz funk album from the iconic band "Jamiroquai" this was my first experience with the band outside of the amazing "Virtual Insanity". I cant say i was dissapointed but i kind of felt like the album got a bit too self-indulgent at points 7/10 Favourite: Revolution 1993 Least Favourite: Music of the Mind
