Reviews (page 2 of 8)

this album took me right back to middle school. psychosocial is still iconic and it's still a total banger

Metal doesn't earn your appreciation with a single. It slowly knocks down your fortifications against the abrasive noise and plays directly to your fundamental emotions. Death metal in particular unlocks the animalistic part of you. This album delivers hate for the establishment, loss of faith in society, and war against unity. Despite the rage, there is also peace in giving up hope and love for the solidarity. The closing track Til We Die even left me with optimism.

5/5, that album my teenage years!

Not bad

I'm giving this a 5 because I'd recommend it to others, but it's not the biggest 5 I've given. There's some pretty solid hits on here, but the tracks also sometimes get a bit same-y. There's not really a lot of bands that I know of who have a sound quite like Slipknot, so that's cool Standouts Sulfur Psychosocial Snuff 5/5

This is some wild shit. A much younger me would've enjoyed this a lot. The guitars are a bit washed out to my ears. So I just focus on the drumming. This isn't my usual listen but I appreciate good musicianship and the drums are standout. The album cover is creepy, like a good metal record should be. The vocals are also good for this style of music.

i have dabbled in slipknot over the years with liking individual songs. This is the first time i have ever listened to a full album. LOVED IT. straight on to spotify to add it to my albums

Welcome to my Controversial Artists list, Slipknot! One star for their self-titled album and now this. Maybe it's because the previous album from this site was hours of generic drum & bass that sounded like a space dolphin giving a drum machine diarrhoea that's making me more predisposed towards any actual humans playing actual instruments.

Powerful, angry, political, emotional, an all time favorite band of mine which already showed their prowess in their early years and only built on off of this reputation.

Stands as one of the best metal AF records. Sonic brilliance.

I'm giving this a 5 because I'd recommend it to others, but it's not the biggest 5 I've given. There's some pretty solid hits on here, but the tracks also sometimes get a bit same-y. Controlled chaos. I love it. I forgot how many good songs are on this album. Of course I remember the big single Psychosocial but Dead Memories and Sulfur came back to me like I listened to them just yesterday. I wouldn't consider myself a big Slipknot fan but this album really is some of their best work. I love the hard gritty nature layered with the some occasional soft vocals. The squealing guitar and relentless drums really set the tone. Getting this album generated in October is just the cherry on top because the memories this album invokes are from my middle school/ high school days going to haunted houses on the weekends. They would blast this stuff while you waited in line and went through the mazes.

One of my favourite bands, and one of their best albums

absolutely

Hell yeah slipknot

I really dig it, from the intense songs to the calm ones

5 Stars

Wow never really listened to slipknot but really rippin riffs, this was really fun to listen to after some of the others on this list.

The summer of 2009 I was taking drivers ed and I met this guy who I ended up hanging out with all summer. I had a big crush on him but nothing ever came of it. But we hung out all the time and he listened to slipknot all the time. I love this band. There is a reason that they are one of the top bands in this genre. Vendetta is (and was) my fave.

Its pretty much all bangers or at least good listening. Is good stuff

Damn, cool album. Great musicianship, cool track after cool track. I might have damaged my hearing, but that's ok. Favorite tracks: Gematria (great lyrics), Sulfur, Psychosocial, Vendetta (I bet this one is fun to hear live), Butcher's Hook, Gehenna, This Cold Black.

Overraskende bra, hvis jeg skal høre heavy metal så er det gooooo

Yes! I only really knew the first Slipknot record and a few of the hits, but this is a great record all-round. Love the production, super riff-heavy, just great. Favourite tracks: Gematria, Sulfur, Psychosocial, Vendetta.

i really liked this album, even more than i thought i would. i knew a handful of tracks from it beforehand but enjoyed most of what was going on here. tracks like psychosocial and snuff are some of slipknot's best, and this album strikes a good balance between really gritty, dark, heavy tracks and the nice but sad ballads. with only one real exception, the songs were all in the neighborhood of 4-6 minutes long, which was a bit grueling for some of the less interesting tracks in the middle. in fact, i really enjoyed tracks 1-5 and 11-15, but the middle third of the album just didn't do much for me. still, that many good and varied tracks makes this an easy 5 star for this list. favorites: tracks 2-5 and 11-15. especially sulfur, psychosocial, dead memories, snuff, and vermilion pt 2

I am biased, this was the first metal album I ever heard. My uncle borrowed the CD to me and told me not to tell my mom I was listening to 'screamo' music. Still love this album.

Goated album

Enjoyed way more than I thought I would.

Damn, this is even better than I remember. The drift from nu-metal to groove was just the perfect decision by Slipknot. All Hope Is Gone completely lives up to it's runtime with plenty of outstanding tracks. The duo of 'Sulfur' into 'Psychoscial' really is something, and the face-melting solo on 'This Cold Black' comes out of nowhere! Also, I acknowledge that 'Snuff' is sort of selling out, but it's just one hell of a track.

better than i remember

Heavy nice stuff..

too much metal for me...

Me gustó demasiado este álbum ya que me gusta el género de rock, aunque las letras y los gritos si me sacaron de onda

yeah, all hope is gone.

Slipknot innit. 🤘 This Cold Black 👌

A modern metal classic

It's not perfect (far from it). It's not the best thing that happened to the music... However, listen to it makes me remember my teenage years and so I'll give it 5 stars just for it.

Really a 4.5, but today I'm rounding up - the world needs to give some respect to heavy metal. Great hammer-drill rock with some melody. Midwestern comfort food for the quietly anxious. Felt like I'd finished a good core workout just by listening.

🙌🏻

Epic rage

Was genuinely and pleasantly surprised by the range on this one. Not my favourite but I'd recommend as an entry point in the genre.

Vraiment brillant au début au niveau du son, les balades sont très sympas aussi. J'avoue que quand même la plupart des musiques mériteraient d'être moins longues sur la fin galère de suivre

I had their debut record about a month ago and I felt like I was stretching a bit in giving it a 4. This one is a solid 4-star album to me. I understand why people might be turned off by the speed metal approach with a pretty dark tone, but to me, this album demonstrates a clear maturity to their sound. It’s better overall and more complete. Also, mixing in more melodic signing rounds out their sound nicely. 4 stars. A very good record.

Fuck whoever says this is for posers, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I get its not the heaviest ever, and that there's a lot of people out there who don't like nu-metal but this was right down my street. My highlights included Snuff, Psychosocial and Child of Burning Time

Loved it more than I thought I would tbh. I am a big metal fan but I don’t usually love the songs with loads of shouting / screaming. However I really enjoyed this one.

i had to stop listening about halfway through this album and pick it up later in the day which really helped with my enjoyment. there are a few really great tracks and the rest are decent. however even with a few hour break in the middle of the album its still hard to listen to slipknot for that long.

I’ve never listened to slipknot as their masks genuinely scare me, but I can see why they are so popular. This was an incredible album, satisfying riffs, amped up and sometimes haunting sounds. The intro to the album was a perfect crescendo. Great album

A nostalgia factor here definitely in play, with memories of walking back to halls listening to this album, but a lovely little bop

Good. 3.5/5 but bumping it up half a star to 4.

The intricate percussion patterns, the variety of tempo, and the duel singing styles (scream and regular) create a compelling album. I was impressed.

I don't really understand why you would choose this Slipknot record to be on this list amongst Iowa. That one and the self titled are the most influential. Don't get me wrong, I like AHIG a lot, maybe even more than I like Iowa but not as much as the self titled. But I wouldn't have included this one. Still though, a really good record that has many bangers, some of the most technical and heavy Slipknot playing on some songs, and also a lot of emotion coming through from tracks like Snuff and Til We Die, which is rare coming from this band.

How fascinating that this list is full of review criticizing the sonic qualities of this album when, so far, it's one of the only entries in the entire list with any melody at all. In terms of musicianship, which should be the entire analysis, these guys are worlds better than anything Bjork or Kraftwerk could ever dream of. I don't care at all how "avant grade" or "experimental" those other albums were, this stuff is raw, primal, music. The list should be more like this, and less improvised brit pop telling the story of some guy growing up in the projects in Gloucester. That's a long winded way of saying: "Lot of fucking nerds here. This shit bangs. 4/5 because there are much better metal bands, but beggars and choosers."

This is #day658 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… some records just stick around, no matter what. Blame it on the timing, I guess. There should be a name for that phenomenon. How about "sentimental memory?" Like, 2008 was my first year in college, a transition period from school/childhood to… you know. It was also around then that I got proper access to the Internet and a PC, so I could finally explore more music, watch music videos, random MP3 downloads... Time is a merciless thing. Anyway, that's also when "Psychosocial" came out. As a half-alternative rock/half-electronic kid, I was always on the lookout, but Slipknot still felt like terra incognita, heavy shit from somewhere beyond my radar. So when All Hope Is Gone dropped, I played it a lot. This is the first Slipknot album I remember. Does it belong on this list? I know it was dropped in later editions, but I still don't think so. The debut? More so. Iowa? Even a better candidate. Still, I enjoyed revisiting this one and wouldn't mind coming back to it in the future. "Sulfur," "Dead Memories," "Snuff," and then "Till We Die" from the album's special edition. So many gems here. Also, it's the band's final studio album to feature the full original lineup, so... This is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day659.

Fajniutkie na 4. Kilka piosenek dziwnych. Eklektycznie gatunkowo

I was not expecting a slipknot album on here, especially when its one of their weakest albums. This must mean that other albums like their self titled debut and iowa would likely be on here as well. It is a good album but there are a few things that bring it down a bit. A lot of the songs feel a bit too commercialised in comparison to their early stuff, where there are a few tracks in their first two albums that sound like the definition of pure insanity and torment. with the exception of a few songs like psychosocial and sulfur, some of them don't have much of a memorable hook to them, and there is one that feels like they are trying to capture the same progressive nature of Vermillion from their previous album. like I said it is still a good album, just not their best in comparison.

Here we see Slipknot have almost entirely metamorphosised into emo metal. I do miss "People equal shit" Slipknot, but those drums still fuck. My metal head friend says Slipknot aren't real metal. Fuck you Aaron and fuck you an all. I like this shit.

Didn’t know what to expect with Slipknot. Was expecting a load of screaming and to hate this album. However it left me pleasantly surprised. Not only did I like the music but the singing was really good too. A little long and same songs were a bit similar but overall I good album Helps that I was walking and went quicker than I have in months

🤣🤣🤣” Iowa” o su “S/T” son mejores… los que estáis detrás de esta lista no tenéis ni puta idea… al igual que el anterior de My Bloody Valentine… ni de largo era su mejor disco

7.2/10

i'm a 41 year old single father and this is deep

I like heavy music and I've seen Slipknot live twice. But I've honestly never gotten into them much. I'm more of an 80s thrash guy. I dug this alright. 3.5/5 rounded to 4.

Great album. I have no issues with this at all. True metal fans might scoff at a few songs, but I believe it helps to bring people towards the genre

Love or hate them they are some of the best nu metal that came in the scene. I personally love them and their work. Im using their shirt today!

Ok, so Slipknot are ok....I take it back

I remember when this album first came out and I thought it was good, but not nearly as good as some of the metal critics were saying it was. Having not listened to it in years I was excited to revisit it to see if my sentiment on it has changed. It has not. I still like this album and the run of opening tracks is phenomenal, but it does tend to lose me towards the middle of the album and bring me back a bit with thr last few tracks. Not my favorite album by Slipknot, but I won't turn it off if someone puts it on. Solid 4/5

Although I find this quite original, I’m not going to give it 5 stars, because I prefer to think of Korn as the definitive icons of nu-metal. Besides, it’s the kind of music you can’t listen to on repeat—I think I’d end up with a terrible headache and a general sense of hostility toward everything around me! Which is definitely not what I want :-( Psychosocial, although it’s the track heard most often on the playlists I’ve seen, isn’t, in my opinion, the best track on this album, IMHO

respect it but wont listen to it ever again

Genuinely surprised but how good this was. Always known of slipknot but never really got into them. However this album is really good, it's passionate, political and punchy without preaching.

Brings me back. I think this album is quintessential in representing Slipknot. A perfect example of nu-metal at his particular time. I think "Gemetria (The Killing Name)" is my favorite track.

As someone who was a teenager in the mid 2000s getting into heavier music – this is when Slipknot were at their height. At age 15 these were my favourite band and I remember waiting for this album to come out. A lot of these songs I haven’t heard in YEARS so this should be interesting. Starting off with a bang with “Gematria (The Killing Name)” they carry on the wild heaviness that they’re known for. Out of the hits that came from this album, one that I always loved is “Sulfur”. The chorus is one of the best on the album and it has a great middle section/guitar solo. The outro absolutely slaps as well. The other big hit I love is “Snuff”. As an emo teen this song was everything to me at the time lol. It’s still brilliant now and its meaning has only gotten deeper now Corey Taylor has performed it at his solo shows in tribute to Paul Gray. The slow, doomy feel of Gehenna is a great listen and one I forgot about. I’ve always thought Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses is their best record and absolute peak Slipknot. This one is good but I feel some of the songs don’t quite land as much as its predecessor. Top picks: Gematria, Sulfur, Snuff, All Hope Is Gone

#909. I've never listened to the newer Slipknot stuff since they've gotten back together, so I cant speak to that, but of the first four this is probably the least good one, so I'm not entirely sure why this was the one that made it on this list. In general, I might've called it C tier, but it's miles ahead of most of the other stuff on here, so maybe I'll split the difference and call it a 4. 4/5: pretty decent

Even after several listens, i'm still not sure what to think. The first two Slipknot albums were played on loop when they came out, but i'd moved away from metal by 2008. This was not expected. There are clearly new metal influences - I hear Carcass and black metal in parts - but also much poppier, major scale parts and even a power ballad. The new version of Vermillion on the deluxe edition is awful, but i'll ignore that. I admire them widening their horizons, but found myself wanting more of the brutality of an Eyeless or Only One. A borderline 3/4 for me - gets a 4 because the worst tracks are bonuses, and the two best tracks (All Hope Is Gone and Gehemmena) are absolutely blinding.

Finally a metal album that didn't bore me. I vibed with this!

I have a soft spot for Slipknot. Maybe it's just the millenial in me. 4/5

Good but too long

Surprised, but not saddened, to see a second Slipknot album on here. Loved their debut album, but sort of fell off after Iowa. Recognized Sulphur & Psychosocial from the radio, but the rest was even better. Love the energy on this album. 4.5⭐️

Another fine example of dumb mother fuckers that can't be subjective on styles of music they don't like, but leaving a review anyway.

I've found this quite difficult to rate. I'm a big Slipknot fan and compared to their best albums (ST and Iowa), this isn't great. It's their 6th best album out of 7. I do enjoy this album, even though there are a couple of stinkers on it - I'm looking at you Dead Memories. The absolute bangers are going to push this rating up, Butchers Hook and the title track stand toe to toe with some of the best they've done. This is better than a 3 when put in the context of other albums on this list, but a 4 does feel a bit generous. It's what I'm going for though.

I've been meaning to listen to this album for a while, since I enjoyed Slipknot's previous album, "Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses". So needless to say, I was excited when this popped up. I'd already heard the hits ("Psychosocial" and "Dead Memories") as a young teenager watching music videos on the Fuse channel. I liked the high energy, heavy songs with melodies (because aren't melodies in heavy rock music wonderful to everyone?) "Gehenna" seems to be the most experimental (Corey Taylor singing falsetto I did not expect). "Snuff" is a more subdued song, but heartbreakingly beautiful. Some of the songs have the obvious Slipknot style, and are pretty formulaic, but there was enough variety to make me really enjoy this album.

I liked the alternating of the growling/screaming vocals with the more melodic vocals. Great rhythm section. Another album I liked a lot more than I expected.

Legendary album.

I am surprisingly a huge metal fan so I do in fact really like this

I like Slipknot, but every song somehow feels like it's an hour long

holy guacamole intro🙏 4.5

Never listened to a full Slipknot album. Most songs were great. There was a lot of musical creativity that isn't even seen from many other metal artists. Easy album to like.

Banger. Always.

# In-Depth Review: Slipknot's *All Hope Is Gone* (2008) ## Overview Released on August 20, 2008, *All Hope Is Gone* represents a pivotal moment in Slipknot's career. It was their first album to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200, achieving platinum status in the US. However, it was also the final studio album to feature the band's original lineup intact—bassist Paul Gray passed away in 2010, and drummer Joey Jordison departed in 2013. The album captures a band at the height of commercial success but internally fractured, resulting in a work that is simultaneously their most accessible and arguably their most conflicted. --- ## Music & Songwriting ### Evolution of Sound *All Hope Is Gone* finds Slipknot straddling multiple worlds. The album retains the band's signature aggression while pushing further into hard rock territory established on *Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)*. Tracks like "Gematria (The Killing Name)" and "This Cold Black" hark back to the dense, claustrophobic intensity of *Iowa* and their self-titled debut, featuring "astonishingly dense thrash" and intricate riff work . Conversely, songs like "Psychosocial" and "Dead Memories" embrace a more streamlined, groove-oriented approach. "Psychosocial" became one of their biggest hits precisely because of this accessibility—its "swaggering, cock-rock groove and an anthemic chorus" demonstrated that Slipknot could reach new audiences "without sacrificing a lick of intensity" . ### Experimental Ventures The album's most dramatic departure is "Snuff"—a full-fledged power ballad driven by acoustic guitars that stands as the "most radio-ready Slipknot song ever" . The track builds from minimalistic beginnings to a cathartic, distorted climax, showcasing Corey Taylor's remarkable vocal range. Similarly, "Gehenna" explores atmospheric, almost psychedelic territory reminiscent of earlier deep cuts like "Prosthetics" and "Skin Ticket," with Shawn Crahan describing it as a "trippy song" that represents "somewhere we go" . ### Percussive Identity Joey Jordison's drumming remains a centerpiece, though opinions vary on its execution here. Some critics noted his performance seemed "by-the-numbers" compared to the innovation on *Vol. 3* , while others praised it as the realization of his vision for the band's sound . The triple-percussionist setup continues to generate the suffocating wall of sound that defines Slipknot's sonic fingerprint, particularly on tracks like "Gematria" . --- ## Lyrics & Themes ### Political Consciousness Corey Taylor significantly expanded his lyrical scope on this album, incorporating explicit political commentary. The opening track ".execute." samples Spiro Agnew's speech targeting Vietnam War protesters, immediately establishing the album's confrontational stance toward authority . "Gematria (The Killing Name)" attacks American militarism with incendiary lines about burning cities down, while "Wherein Lies Continue" targets pretentious leadership and "Butcher's Hook" takes aim at the emo/scene culture of the era . Taylor explained that the album title itself serves as a challenge to fan expectations: "Just when you thought you had us figured out, give up all hope because you're never, ever going to" . This meta-commentary reflects the band's awareness of their own evolution and the resistance it might provoke. ### Personal Darkness Despite the political turn, personal anguish remains central. "Sulfur" explores internal struggle with what many consider one of the strongest choruses in the band's catalog . "Dead Memories" addresses trauma and forgetting, while "Snuff" presents a devastating portrait of a relationship destroyed by the narrator's own darkness—"My heart is just too dark to care/I don't deserve you" . The album maintains Slipknot's characteristic bleakness, with themes of "pain, anguish, hatred and hopelessness" recurring throughout . However, there's also a strain of resilience—"All Hope Is Gone" itself functions as both a statement of defeat and defiant survival. --- ## Production Produced by Dave Fortman (who had worked on *Vol. 3*), the album features a polished, hard-hitting sound that divided the band members themselves. Guitarist Jim Root expressed particular disappointment, stating Fortman "wasn't able to get nine people together on the same page," contrasting him unfavorably with Rick Rubin . The recording process was fraught with tension—members were often not in the studio simultaneously, leading to a "disjointed" feel that some critics identified as the album's central weakness . However, the production succeeds in capturing the band's live intensity while allowing new textural elements to breathe. The mix by Colin Richardson in the UK provided the clarity needed for the album's more melodic moments without sacrificing heaviness . The sonic palette is notably more "grey skies" than the horror-movie atmosphere of earlier work—appropriate for its 2008 release amid economic collapse and political uncertainty . --- ## Influence & Legacy *All Hope Is Gone* arrived as nu-metal's commercial dominance was waning, yet it proved that Slipknot had transcended the genre's limitations. The album demonstrated that extreme metal could achieve mainstream success without compromise—it was included in the book *1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die* and ranked in *Kerrang!*'s "50 Best Albums of the 21st Century" . "Psychosocial" earned the band their first MTV Video Music Award nomination and a Grammy nod, cementing their status as metal ambassadors to the mainstream . The album's commercial success—debuting at #1 in multiple countries—proved that aggressive music still had mass appeal in the late 2000s. For subsequent metal acts, *All Hope Is Gone* modeled the difficult balance between artistic evolution and fan service. Its mixed reception among longtime fans foreshadowed the challenges every legacy metal band would face in the streaming era. --- ## Pros & Cons ### **Pros** - **High-caliber individual tracks**: "Psychosocial," "Sulfur," "Dead Memories," and "Snuff" rank among the strongest material in Slipknot's catalog - **Vocal evolution**: Corey Taylor's clean singing reaches new heights of expressiveness, with "Snuff" showcasing his remarkable range - **Successful experimentation**: The band proves capable of dynamics beyond their established template without losing identity - **Political engagement**: The expanded lyrical scope adds maturity and cultural relevance - **Commercial triumph**: Debuting at #1 while maintaining artistic credibility is a rare achievement in metal ### **Cons** - **Lack of cohesion**: The album feels like a collection of individual visions rather than a unified statement—"good ideas from amazing songwriters that aren't fleshed out properly" - **Inconsistent quality**: For every standout track, there's a "Butcher's Hook" or "Vendetta" that feels underdeveloped or filler-like - **Tonal whiplash**: The shifts between extreme metal and hard rock/acoustic balladry can feel jarring rather than dynamic - **Stone Sour comparisons**: Several tracks ("Dead Memories," "Snuff") veer too close to Taylor's other band, diluting Slipknot's distinct identity - **Production disputes**: The band's own dissatisfaction with the process (particularly from Root and Taylor) colors retrospective assessment --- ## Verdict *All Hope Is Gone* is the most paradoxical album in Slipknot's discography. It is simultaneously their most commercially successful and their least favorite among the band members to make. It contains some of their most beloved songs ("Psychosocial," "Snuff") alongside some of their most forgettable. It represents both evolution and fragmentation. For listeners, the album rewards patience. Initial impressions of inconsistency give way to appreciation for its individual peaks. While it may lack the singular vision of *Iowa* or the cohesive ambition of *Vol. 3*, it captures a band pushing against its own boundaries at the exact moment those boundaries were becoming most defined. In retrospect, *All Hope Is Gone* serves as a closing chapter to Slipknot's original era—a final document of nine individuals creating together before tragedy and division permanently altered their trajectory. That historical weight, combined with its genuine musical highs, ensures its place as a "solid" if flawed entry in the metal canon .

This surprised me with how good it was

7.5/10

This was a heavy and fun listen. There could have been a bit more variety in the tracklist, but I thought it was overall interesting. 3.7/5 -> 4/5

Pretty cool.

Not nearly as heavy as I expected! I thought Slipknot were a bunch of depraved devil worshippers based on the album covers from mom’s slipknot collection, but this reminded me of a pure metal version of Lincoln Park. And it was better than Anthrax (which mom said she doesn’t like either, despite what I said in my review).

Bom álbum. A banda apresenta um som mais maduro com ums rock /metal bem feito. TRN Medusa.

This is the only Slipknot album I've really heard anything from, those tracks being the singles. It's quite poppy, isn't it?

I like metal. I like Slipknot but this type of music is really hard to gauge a score. What’s it against? Other metal albums? Cool but where are they on this list? I don’t think I’ve seen more than 3. Is that enough? I’m going to do what any good Christian would do. I’m going to weigh it against my expectations and my familiar sounds in the metal industry. This is no OK Computer, it’s no White Album but it could possibly be their version of it. I’m not disappointed. Slipknot is one of those bands that I respect and I can pull a song or two off of an album and live with it. I’ve never listened to a full album. I don’t need to, or at least I didn’t need to until this list brought forth to my attention this album. I’m listening. As I have already said and I say quite frequently in my reviews, I’m not disappointed. Slipknot would do best to allow Cory to harmonize more but then again that would just make them sound like Stone Sour. Touché. Choice cut: Psychosocial

Fav tracks: snuf, gematria (the killing name), psychosocial, vendetta It’s like this generator knew I needed to hear slipknot today.

yeah this rocks

It is pretty good after you get through the first song.

Not bad but I thought I'd be more into it.

I forgot how much I listened to this in middle school. Better than I would have thought. Slipknot may be one of the best intro to heavier music bands out there.

The pulse of the maggots has found it's way to the list! I'm a fan and this is one of my favorite Slipknot albums. These guys rock super hard, not for the faint of heart, but they also have crazy groove to their music that keeps your head bopping/banging from start to finish. Cory Taylor can belt out some legendary guttural metal vocals, then pivot on a dime to more melodic tones. (you may also actually know Cory from his other, very different, band Stone Sour). I stumbled upon Slipknot in 2000, saw them on the main stage at Ozzfest shortly thereafter where they absolutely killed it. Been a fan ever since. This is pretty much peak Slipknot for me, end of an amazing three album run. Still putting out good music, but lineup changes have really taken it's toll on the soul of the band. This album provides a great feel for the essence of Slipknot, the drive of Sulfur, groove of Psychosocial, and soul of Snuff all do a good job representing who they are. I was happy to see this pop up, and even happier to give it a listen.

Powerful and passionate. ★★★★

I’ve always overlooked Slipknot because they were so popular, and I figured my time was better spent digging into more underground artists. But now that I’m going back and actually listening to their albums, I have to say they’re a pretty solid band. This album is still aggressive, but it’s definitely more polished and melodic compared to their earlier work. It leans heavily into groove metal and has a more radio-friendly sound overall. Even with the cleaner production and accessible songwriting, I thought it was a pretty cool album and I genuinely enjoyed it.

I love slipknot and I am surprised this record is on here. I would have thought Iowa or debut or one with more popular songs. Ultra intense, is this the record where Corey started clean singing more? It’s great stuff. So fucking heavy. I love it.

The Knot at their finest

Every criticism of Slipknot is correct but I still like them

Listened to Slipknot before; mostly the singles. Which is good depending on mood. First whole album listen, some songs I was familiar with which I liked but on the whole I think the whole album didn't have the same impact as the singles.

I’m not really a Slipknot fan and I’m definitely not a Nu Metal fan. This is way better than I thought it was going to be though. I like Corey Taylor - I think he’s a good dude and I like his voice. This album feels very crab core but it doesn’t suck. There are too many down tuned pinch harmonics for my liking. Overall I think it’s pretty good but I’m not rushing out to buy it or see them live.

Destaque pra Psychosocial e Dead Memories, acho que foram minhas favoritas, e acabei conhecendo, curtindo e adicionando Sulfur, Snuff e Child of Burning Time.

It's good Slipknot. like yea. Grew up on the earlier albums.

Labai patiko, galingi būgnai, geras ritmas.

Yeah fuck it I like this - I know it's not healthy but once in a while it won't kill me

One of my favorites.

Heavy heavy and what a way to start an album! Not quite to the level of Subliminal Verses but a crunching album none the less.

Better than I thought. Great for working out and lifting weights!

Man tröttnar lite fast det är ju najs asså

Kruttsterk

7/10, didn't listen to the whole thing but, so far what I had listening to managed to attract my attention towards this genre more

I'm surprised again! Delightful band, great sound

Ett riktigt album. Inga låtar sticker ut jättemycket varken uppåt eller neråt.vilka jävla trummor! Och oväntat melodiösa och dynamiska. Verkligen inte bara bröt. Snuff är en kanon låt! En stark fyra

Bike to and from - melodic metalica

Not the least bit surprising that the top review is a 1 from an author who is enamored by Thom Yorke, whose name carries the unnecessary dead weight of extra letters and is in a perpetual state of delivering equally unnecessary whiny falsettos. This album may not be everyone's cup of tea but it doesn't suffer from that author's brand of snobbery and pretentiousness.

I love Slipknot, but this isn't there best. I wonder if Iowa and their self titled album are on this list???

Klassikko suosikkeja kyllä, mutta muut kappaleet jää sit vähän vaisuiksi. Ei oikeastaan sillein erikoisempia mainintoja. Parhaat: Psychosocial, Snuff, Dead Memories, Sulfur

What the hell is happening here? This...is really good! I gather this is the moment when hardcore Knot fans ditched them, because they'd discovered anti-nu-metal concepts like melody, songs and being musicians. What's particularly good here is that the few things that are good about nu-metal - insane drumming and a sense of energy - are still very much present and correct.

4 pretty good

Better than I thought it would be overall. Snuff is just a great track

A classic, I enjoyed it. But probably not gonna listen to it often

Liked it more than I thought I would. This sounded closer to Disturbed (who I love) than Pantera or Sepultura (who I don't, but they're what I was expecting). It's a little disjointed as a couple different times I assumed autoplay had taken over since the vocals switched from screaming to singing on a few tracks and it's a long album. Overall pretty solid for a metal album, though. 4.0

Hell yeah brother

Vendetta is so cool

love the way each song blends into one another. might be a bit long considering what it is but if I was a metal fan I would want another 4 hours. lyrics r a bit silly but I think that’s to be expected from white men in 2008.

awww is someone afraid of nu metal

Another good Slipknot album.

One of the bands I've been listening to the most the past few years. This isn't my fav album of theirs, but has a couple of my fav songs. 4/5

I actually really enjoyed this despite my preconceptions of this type of music before listening. This was clearly more accessible than other albums in the same category though due to its mix of death metal like vocal screams with anger behind it and a more poppy choruses with much clearer, singing vocals (especially with snuff which was essentially a love ballad out of nowhere). The lyrics were a bit cringe and edgy sometimes which I guess is to be expected for a band like slipknot but for me it wasn’t about the lyrics, more its riffs and instrumentation (especially the drumming and guitar), the melodies and the vocals were also nice. There were no standout songs for me, I thought the whole album was quite concise and had no clear drop offs or highs really. Overall, 7/10.

Really enjoyed it! Not my normal type of music but definitely something i will look into now because of this album.

When this popped up, I audibly said, “fuck yes!” I’ve just had a slog of 70s rock, 80s pop, and weird Girl From Ipanema-type albums, so this was incredibly refreshing. This is an awesome album, but it’s a little confusing that this is the album selected, when it’s probably the third or fourth best Slipknot album. Iowa is, in my opinion, their magnum opus, and their self-titled is another 5 star. All that said, there are some killer, all-time greats on this album. Psychosocial is as good as any song they’ve ever released, Snuff is a beautiful ballad that one would never expect from a band of Slipknot’s reputation, and songs like Gematria and Vendetta show that they’ve still got the heavy chops that have made them icons. I think there were a couple meandering songs that kept this from being a 5 star, but it’s definitely good enough to be in your metal album rotation.

Damn fine album from a band I didn't think I would enjoy.

A nice mix of songs that have different feels to them, works well as an album and is a pleasant listen.

7 / 10 - Not something I usually listen to, I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. A good fast-paced album to wake you up a bit in the morning

Way better than I remembered! :)

Does anybody else remember people suddenly becoming hardcore goths are this album game out? It’s not even got rock, but everyone suddenly dyed their hair black and had the thickest eyeliner I’d ever seen. At the time, I didn’t like this album at all, because Bowling For Soup was around the limit I could take regarding distorted guitars. Listening today, I can see why this was loved. It’s raw, and it’s really emotional at times. These are the lyrics of someone who was suffering, that much is certainly clear. Even if you don’t like Slipknot, I challenge you to not be moved by the lyrics.

The needle swerving toward a more stone sour sound here. It’s no Iowa.

Much better than the first one

I dont get hate this is raw af. i can never hate music like this, fucking radical (im tired of calling things awesome i struggling to think of lame synonyms)

Not usually much for screamo and hadn’t really listened to them a lot before, but this album had some solid rifts and vocals. The beginning took me a minute to get into but a few songs in, I was definitely vibing. I didn’t finish the album so I do need to revisit it later.

"All Hope Is Gone" is the fourth studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. Groove metal, nu metal and alternative metal are the Wiki-listed genres. I'm confused by the nu metal classification. It was their final album to feature their Iowa-era lineup and has themes of anger, disaffection, obsession and the music industry. The bandmembers included (#8) Corey Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar), (#7) Mick Thomson (guitars), (#6) Shawn "Clown" Crahan (percussion, backing vocals, drums), (#5) Craig "133" Jones (samples, media, keyboards), (#4) Jim Root (guitars), (#3) Chris Fehn (percussion, backing vocals), (#2) Paul Gray (bass, backing vocals), (#1) Joey Jordison (drums) and (#0) Sid Wilson (turntables, keyboards). The album was well-received critically and, commercially, hit #1 in both the US and UK. Oh, yeah, these guys were masks when they perform. The album really gets going on the second song "Gematria (The Killing Name)." Drums, guitar, a metal groove. Very "Master of Puppets"-ish. Incredible drumming, deep-throated vocals, a crazy guitar solo. Firmly in death/thrash metal area. About the US bombing of other countries. They slow it down a bit in "Sulfur." More melodic and actual singing by Taylor. He's got a good voice when he's doesn't go Satan. I know I've heard the fourth song "Pyschosocial." I have no idea where or why. It's a song that is slow and charging. Back to Satan vocals and then back to normal. A heavy and good song about social anxiety. The band shows it can go straight rock if they want to in "Dead Memories." Melodic. Nice vocals. Very sentimental..Awwww! I didn't see the acoustic ballad coming in "Snuff." Normal drumming. It's pretty much all Corey Taylor on vocals and the acoustic guitar. They couldn't end on a ballad? Could they? Nope! They go back to extremely fast thrash on the closing "All Hope Is Gone." An extremely bleak and dark look at the US and the world in general. This album can be hard, fast and in your face and also melodic with very good vocals. Incredible drumming by Jordison. Great guitar work too. They do cover a lot of genres - death/thrash metal, hard rock, groove metal and ballads. The lyrics can be political or personal. Yeah, this is a solid album and if you're into metal or hard rock, there's a lot to like here.

Has it's ups and downs. Overall good.

I like Slipknot and Corey Taylor. This is a great album. I can't say I love every song, but for the majority they're epic tracks. I don't think people really give Slipknot enough of a chance to learn to appreciate what they do. Beyond the masks there is a lot of great musical work, the drums are kick ass.

I wasn’t really looking forward to listening to this album but really enjoyed it. Quite a variety of different styles. Great musicianship. The two G songs were really good as was Vendetta.

Yeah, dig it. It's driving. It's got great musicianship. Not a super big fan of the "I'ma scare you from fighting me by using my dominant male monkey motherfucker voice " singing. But overall, good shit.

Some great songs on the album. The singers voice is really good both with the darker voice that comes out in some songs and in songs where he mostly sings cleanly like Dead Memories. I had a great time listening through this one!

very good but not my favorite of their music

AND THE RAIN WILL KILL US AAALLL!!!! SO motherfucking teaaaa i just love slipknot, this is like prime corey taylor aswell!!! sulfur and psychosocial are obviously classics but the rest of the album slaps too!! perfect example of screamo at its finest, i have this album on cd so im also quite biased, and my yearbook quote was a lyric from snuff. super fun, would give a 4.5 if i could :/

Great for a Monday.

Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of drums? Well in Gematria you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of electric guitar? Well in Psychsocial you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has some guitar? Well in Snuff you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend this song.

Gematria I like this song because my sister listens to it when she goes with my uncle. psychosocial I like this song because it is a heavie meatl song. snuff i like this song because it is a rock song

Sommige nummers zijn niet iets te zwaar, maar wel echt verrassend goed. Ik wist niet wat ik moest verwachten, vooral met die album cover, maar ik ben echt aangenaam verrast

7.5/10 As subtle as a ton of bricks. Maybe objectively doesn't deserve four stars, because there are much better metal picks, with fewer clichés and less whining. It's way too long. But I really needed this at the moment. I want to give four stars, so I will. Highlights: Psychosocial execute All Hope is gone Sulfur Dead Memories

Good heavy metal. Groovy but also melodic. Corey is a great singer. Having like 10 people in the band helps give them a thick, layered sound. Favorites: Psychosocial, Dead Memories, Snuff, Till We Die

I didn’t pay as much attention to this album as I should have. I had always given old metal a bad rap as a young metalhead because it sounded way duller than new age metal. However listening to this album changed my more mature mind about that because it was actually really good. Even their slower more mellow songs I enjoyed a lot.

Woke me up at 09:30am so that was helpful. I actually enjoy this music. I think it has so much noise my mind blends it into some kind of mashed melodic trance. No idea how but this gave me clarity while working. I dont really listen to the lyrics I just follow the melody of the track (Drums and guitair mainly). I find I can literally zero in on where the music is taking me. Bit like being dragged along by a winding river. It is messy but has logic and direction to it. Little mellow treat of Snuff near the end. More typical to "Pop" ones that made them famous. I enjoyed this album I even went on to listen to the bonus live album bits at the end (not all from this album). Unexpected little heavy joy I got from this :) for which bar one song had never heard before.

The perfect amount of heaviness for me. They sound so violent and evil, but then he can sing nice too. It's high octane in the underworld

good album, best one i’ve heard them these guys so far

I enjoyed it but it got a bit stale at the end, probably more enjoyable than their first album.

Good album

As others have said, not their best album (my heart will always belong to Iowa) but this is still great stuff. Perfect music for the hectic work day I had - kept my energy up the whole time.

This is just the energy I needed today, loved it.

Probably their easiest album to endure if you're not into metal. I can't think of any other reason why this album is on the list and not Iowa. This album is not their signature sound, not their breakthrough album and it doesn't have their biggest hits. It starts properly heavy, but fizzles out towards the end. It covers the full range from cheesy ballads to heavy rock to sepultura-like groove metal and carcass-like death metal. Style wise it's too inconsistent for me. Favorite song: this cold black

It's a good album with some banging tracks on it, with Pyschosocial being the obvious standout, but it's definitely a bit long and bloated. If they'd cut this down by a few tracks it'd be a five.

The singles are absolute bangers. The drums are legendary. I already liked slipknot, but to the people who dont like this, I hope you enjoy the fourth Tim Buckley album. At least this album makes you feel something.

I sort of missed out on Slipknot as a teen. Not sure why, I was the kind of kid that would’ve liked them, but I think I thought they were a bit…obvious? All that People = Shit stuff. Even at 15 it made me roll my eyes a bit. As a result I’d never heard this album before. Anyway. I enjoyed this. That thunderous rattling drumbeat really carries it, but it was a lot more sonically interesting than I’d given it credit for. It’s a long album, and by the end I’d started to lag a bit, but it was good and I shall be revisiting my favourite tracks.

I always forget how technically competent Metal musicians, including singers, have to be. And then a song like Gehenna comes along to remind me.

So good.

4 Just for Psychosocial

Slipknot consistently surprises me with the talent. Drums are insane. Found myself early on saying ok guitar isn’t doing too much of anything fancy, then I quickly ate my words hearing a ridiculous solo come in. Corey is a unique talent alone with being able to sing the way he does. Id say his vocals and the drums really came through hard on this on from Slipknot.

Strong start. Haven't listened to a whole Slipknot album as always bunched them in with nu-metal. Felt more thrash to begin with. Drumming is awesome. Then the nu-metal vocals started creeping in and it took the power out of the record for me. The last track redeems it though. Think I could get more into it over time.

Metal is one of those genres I always think I'm not gonna like, but then I actually listen and I find out I don't mind it. It happened with the King Gizz metal albums, and it happened with this one. There were some really good songs on this album, the stretch of .execute. to Phsycosocial was the best (barring maybe Sulfur which was kind a let down). My big gripes with this and the metal genre in general are probably the insistence on tons of Guitar Distortion and the Screaming Vocals which can get a bit annoying after a while. Fave Songs - Gamatria (The Killing Name), Phsycosocial, Vendetta

Ok Gematria is a great song. Psychosocial is still a good single, even if I couldn't stand it when I was younger. The perfect album to do a little drywall project to. All Hope Is Gone is a solid closer.

Wow, Slipknot??? I can't believe it. I remember disliking "Psychosocial" when it came out and my friends were talking about it, and really haven't heard it ever since. I think I liked it this time. I didn't like when this album went into death metal territory but when Corey Taylor (who has one of the most impressively diverse voices in rock music currently) really sang, on top of groove metal riffs that I didn't know Slipknot had in them, it was awesome. I have always preferred Stone Sour to Slipknot, but held "Duality" and "Before I Forget" close. I'm really not a fan of when Taylor screams his way through a track, but had no idea Slipknot had a more musical and groovy side, and I'm glad I discovered it here.

Great metal album, a band I will certainly look up

Favourite tracks: psychosocial; dead memories; snuff; butchers hook

Not the best slipknot album, but enjoyed it. Standout songs: Sulfur Vendetta Gehenna

8.5/10

I was a fan of Slipknot before this album, but for some reason I dropped off when this one came out and I regret it now. Fantastic work

So... this is Slipknot, huh? As someone who enjoys metal more than most people, I've felt for a while that Slipknot is one of those bands that I have to try and get into eventually, but I wanted to wait until I got one of their albums for the project since they are (rightfully) included on this list with two albums! I would've liked to start with their self-titled debut, but I guess I'll have to settle for their fourth album, All Hope is Gone from 2008. Hey, I'm sure this was someone's first Slipknot album before me. Anyways, how do I feel about Slipknot after listening to my first album of theirs? I get it. I see the appeal. This album's pretty good! The style is strong. This is definitely one of the heaviest albums I've gotten so far, which is a good thing for me. Apparently this album departs a bit from the nu-metal stylings and goes for more of a groove metal sort of thing. I'm okay with that. There's still some occasional nu-metal moments here, but this is definitely a more standard metal affair. Slipknot definitely has some very talented members behind it when it comes to instrumentals. I especially want to give a shout-out to the band's drummer at the time, Joey Jordison. Fortunately, unlike a band like Limp Bizkit where the band has a bunch of talented instrumentals and a shitty vocalist, Slipknot has Corey Taylor, who is a great vocalist. I like how he can go from intensely screaming to actually singing pretty well like it's nothing. Good for you Corey! The writing here is also solid. It's got some depth to it while still being full of edge. There's even some personal moments here, with the obvious one being the penultimate track, the acoustic "Snuff." Still, the majority of this songs are general "I hate the world" songs, but there's something about a song like "Pscyhosocial" that just makes this sort of thing work. It's probably the talent of the band members. Overall, this album gives me a good first impression of a band that I probably should've gotten into by now. The album's not perfect, but I like it for what it is quite a bit. It appeals to me. Light 4/5.

I bet this album gets savaged here in the global reviews. This community seems to hate metal. I, on the other hand, enjoy metal. Slipknot is one of those bands I've never listened to very much. The melodic vocal interludes have always put me off. So I was happy to see them here and have a reason to give a full listen to one of their albums. And I really enjoyed it. You can tell these guys grew up listening to Pantera and Sepultura.

Surprisingly enjoyable

I've always written Slipknot as some poser NuMetal band that wasn't worth my time back when they first came out. Wow, I have really matured with my music appreciation. This album is rock solid, and kicks ass! Reminds me a lot of Pantera at parts, with some heart and emotion (Snuff, Sulfur). Overall, I enjoyed this album a lot. 4/5

wait a second... am *I* a metalhead? * i look into the mirror. my face is more GREY and SHINY than normal.

This album is pretty awesome. The combo of Sulphur and Psychosocial is pretty amazing.

I really enjoy the groovier direction Slipknot took on some of these songs. It was a change in sound that I think was welcome. Last album to feature Joey and Paul (RIP to both) so it's an important one. Some big hits on here. Not as groundbreaking as their self-titled or Iowa but a great album nonetheless.

Raaaaagh-gentle-Raaaaagh!

The slower/ballady songs did not hit me the right way - could have probably left those off. With that said the rest of the record was pretty awesome actually. Metal but still pretty melodic -> hard rock is a better description for most of this. I feel like this is more like what I expected 'alternative rock' to turn in to rather than Nickelback and the like... Sulfur was a great track. Gematria was pretty awesome also. Psychosocial was a bit "90's nu-metal" for me but still pretty ok. Overall a good listen. Maybe a weak 4 but I think it makes the 4-star mark for me.

The first Slipknot record came out whole I worked at Blockbuster video and I would listen to it on CD while walking to work. Iowa was an extension of that sound and was similarly great. By the time this record came out, I had moved out of my parents house and couldn't afford to buy CDs. This got missed. This is more polished. And the tempos vary which is a nice chance of pace. But this feels somehow less brutal. There are clearly different metal influences in here. Which is nice. But it just doesn't click the way those first two did. Now I need to go listen to Subliminal verses and see what's going on there.

I understand why Slipknot exists. There was a niche to be filled for heavier music highly marketable towards youth in the 2000s. Slipknot was ever popular with the 12 year olds that were craving something heavier than radio rock, but weren't familiar with anything heavier than Metallica or Soundgarden. Enter Slipknot, standing on the shoulders of giants. Recycling old Slayer riffs, add some Joey J drum fills and a frontman who can scream AND sing (WOWEE!) Things I like about this album: 1. I am desperate for variance in guitar tone. Hearing distorted tones again warms my heart after 400 albums of late 60s jam rock slogs and 90s brit pop slop. 2. The lyrics are on point. Slipknot is writing songs that resonated with the youth of the 90s and 2000s and remain popular for this reason. Any music that is pushing back on the right wing christian theocracy that is alive and well today is appreciated. This is peak Bush era music. 3. Joey J definitely is the highlight here. Slipknots songwriting learns heavy into having a talented drummer that can fit in tight little drum fills to doctor up these songs as being more exciting than they are. Things I dislike about this album: 1. Holy shit the recycling riffs here are boring. There are a couple of downbeat songs here that really let you linger and think about what the music isn't doing, and this sucks. Slipknot is at it's best when its a fast and heavy. 2. Clean vocals. The sing songy choruses juxtaposed to the screamed ones are probably a draw for some, but I can't get into it. It reminds me of those Jpop bands like BABYMETAL. I can't take these guys seriously at all. I'm struggling to rate this as far as this website goes. Heavy metal and it's subgenres are my favorite to listen to in my daily life, and I don't like Slipknot all that much. The conversation has just moved on. Nostalgia doesn't grip me to this music like it does some other nu metal acts. If I was going to rate this album amongst other heavy metal records, it would likely be a 2/5. Because of the omission of seminal or innovative metal albums on this list, I am forced to rate this higher. In short, put Acid Bath on this list, you cowards.

I had never heard an entire Slipknot album before, but this is brilliant. It's not only speed and screaming (although there is plenty of that), but also quite melodic moments. And, most importantly, it can, better thatn most other albums I know, be an outlet for feelings like frustration and anger. I will come back to this. 4/5

An awesome metal album - not as good as some of their older material but still a good one. Amazing how Slipknot turned out to be one of the most valid of the era of early noughties metal bands.

I think this, for the most part, is absolutely excellent. It doesn’t feel like some of the other heavier metal stuff I’ve listened to, in that it’s way more interesting and melodic. It’s not incomprehensible noise. Although there is screaming, there’s plenty of proper singing too, and he has a genuinely great voice. A lot of the tracks have real drive to them, and there’s plenty of shifts in tempo which keep things fresh. The drums hit really hard, and the more technical squealing guitars when they kick in are massively my jam. For much of this album I was scrunching up my face and nodding along in a ‘this is badass’ kind of way. I’m generally on-board with most of the album, but there are some truly stand-out tracks. Sulfur is a great tune. Psychosocial is badass. All Hope Is Gone. Snuff, while the least ‘Slipknot’ song on here is superb. I loooove the guitars in that song when they kick off. Vermillion (it’s a bonus track I think) goes even further with all kinds of interesting instruments and orchestral bits thrown in. Really quite impressive. 4.5 rounded down.

I enjoy heavier music and it's not because I'm ignoring personal problems or don't have a healthy mindset. It's the same way anyone resonates with the music that they like; It makes you feel something. I'm a casual slipknot listener, but I know they changed the lives of many people during our formative years when I was growing up. They're one of many bands that made heavier music accessible to so many.

absolute banger of an album. Incredibly intense with a lot of dark imagery, but really well mixed and mastered, with some awesome riffs, some difficult topics, and overall powerful offering.

Alright

I don't give Slipknot enough credit. They are pretty good, it is just hard for me as an Illinois native to support anything that Iowa ever produced. Great album though!

4.5. Love it.

I fucked w this pretty hard. Unsure if it was because i listened during a run or what but it was 🔥

Has some of my favorite Slipknot songs, Sulfur especially (oooof those drums!!!), but I feel this album is just weaker as a whole. I don't really know why this made the list over a 2nd SOAD album or even Iowa from Slipknot, which is their best album. Still this one does the job and scratches the itch perfectly fine

Not my normal listen, but surprisingly good. Didn't pay attention to the words, but the musicality was surprisingly infectious.

A few songs I'd not heard before on here, and probably won't listen to them ones again. The ones I had heard before are quality though. Will absolutely keep listening to Slipknot, just maybe not this entire album.

One of my favorite bands but probably my least favorite album from them. “Psychosocial” and “Snuff” are solid.

So much better than Korn. I was really expecting another "Follow the Leader" album and I am so, so, so glad it's not that. I actually quite liked this album. Yes the masks are kinda kitschy, but the music was solid I thought. The dude can actually sing (which is much more than I can say for Jonathan Davis). Also he doesn't try to do any stupid scatting (like Jonathan Davis 🤮). They can seriously play their respective instruments, the drums were awesome, just straight fire. I also appreciated that every song wasn't completely overrun with double kick drum cause I feel like that happens a lot in metal. Also the lyrics weren't complete trash which was really quite a surprise and nice. Were they pretty dark in places, sure, but they at least had meaning and weren't the mindless gratuitous violence of Korn. Very surprised but would listen to again.

So when Slipknot first came out I wanted to like them, and there were songs that I did like from their first album but I could never get all the way through because I found it to heavy on the vocals. I have since never listened to a full Slipknot album, but after my listen to "All Hope Is Gone" I am sad it has taken me this long. What I do know is that I have loved the song Snuff from this album for years. I should have listened to the whole album based off that. This is a 4 for sure.

I am not a fan of screaming music, so I gravitate toward the songs that have less of that. The energy of the music is great especially those drums. Snuff is so good. Sulfur, Psychosocial, 'Til We Die, and especially Dead Memories are also really good. On more listening the other songs grew on me too.

Not the best Shitnot album, still solid

I had never really given Slipknot a chance due to the imagery they use and I don't like that guttural screaming type of singing. My opinion hasn't changed on the screaming but this album was still really good and I thought they did what they set out to do very well. Rating: 4

Pretty great nu metal album! Sounds fantastic, songs hit hard, and Corey's vocals are phenomenal.

I’ve always really liked slip knot but hadn’t heard this whole album. It’s a good one. Good mix of heavy and slower tracks. Good lyrics. Amazing drumming as always. Strong vocals.

luulee pelottelevansa... eipä pelota ollenkaan... mahtavaa musiikkia punttisalille kuulenma... isot miehet tarvitsee huutoa korvaan, käskyjä, ärhytystä... ehkä kuntosalille, ei punttikselle... ei koskaan punttikselle... mies menee hiljaa töihin ja sillä sipuli.. kuulemma sosiaalisia konstrukteja vastaan ja silti korville laitetaan satanistien perustuslakeja... ohjataan lampaita teurastamoon... milloin aletaan ymmärtämään että painavuus johtuu dynamiikasta, ei turhasta jatkuvasta rääkistä... ei ainakaan 2008 tiedetty, kolossa oltiin... taitaapi niin olla että koskaan kiivetty pois ei... ok vähän yllätyin globaaleista ''mielipiteistä'' . ps. mahtava review 600 päivää sitten 'till we die

Tiukkaa ajoa

I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes when I saw this was the album of the day. I’d listened to their debut before, which I think is supposed to be a classic, and I didn’t care for it at all even though I like a lot of metal. This was really good and it surprised me. There was a lot more musicality than I expected, and the duel lead vocals were effective. I was surprised by how much I liked it and will revisit it.

TLDR: Some good moments, but kind of generic. Very generous 4. I had a short Slipknot phase a couple of years ago, now their debut is the only album I still enjoy out the ones I have listened to (besides a few songs here and there). This is my first time listening to this album though. .execute. is a really good intro and sets an exhilarating tone but then Gematria is just kind of generic Slipknot and kills the vibe. Sulfur has a memorable chorus, but it's a little too poppy for me. Psychosocial is a really fun song, and I will always enjoy the breakdown. This is probably the first Slipknot song I ever heard. Dead Memories has a good melody and something about it works a lot more for me than Sulfur does. Vendetta has a cool breakdown, but the rest of the song is kind of generic. The next four songs are just more Slipknot. Snuff and the title track are good. I am surprised that this album was picked over their 2nd or 3rd album. But I am also surprised that they picked two Slipknot albums (RIP Deftones) 3~ (rounding up because people rate metal low without listening)

The first impression is that this is all one track. They scream more or less intelligibly, 4/5

Seems some people really dislike this album but I’m approaching it without expectations based on Slipknot’s previous works. This album stands up on its own with a mix of catchy death metal riffs and melodic vocals, and you can really hear the influence of several genres throughout the album. Yes, Iowa was good, but this is still a well-crafted piece of music.

Was not expecting to get a high school nostalgia trip today. One of the albums I listened to extensively when I first decided I wanted to learn how to play drums. Powerful, heavy, and totally complex. Has more mainstream-sounding hits than I'd like, but overall a very good album. Top tracks: Sulfur, Psychosocial, Dead Memories, Snuff

Are you ready for gruff angry music?

Pretty good. Nothing bad on the record. I like heavy, not totally up my alley, but definitely a good listen.

Gosh this album takes me back to simpler times - listening to Sulfer and Psychosocial on ScuzzTV as I got ready for school. This album was among the catalysts that got me into metal culture - I paid 99p to have the album artwork for AHIG as my phone background for Pete sake. It's super easy to pass over this album, particularly if you're not partial to metal, because it's abrasive from the offset. Slipknot also have a reputation for being ridiculous and definitely created sumething of a nu-satanic panic n the early oughts which maybe didn't help them much commercially. HOWEVER - this album is dead good. It's probably Slipknots most accessible album - the singles are groovy and poppy at times. Minus the image, songs like Dead Memories could definitely have played on some of the big commercial radio stations (and probably did, I don't know I was too edgy to listen to the radio at the time) I don't think it's SKs best effort. If you liked this album but didn't love it I'd definitely suggest trying some of their other stuff. If this album isn't heavy enough give their self titled a spin. If it's too heavy try Vol. 3. If you don't want to do that go and give the music video for 'The Devil In I' a watch before you close the book on them forever. At any rate, I think you'll make a big mistake if you hear 'screamo' and skip this album after 3 songs. There's a lot more to it, but I will concede it's not for everyone. Oh, and if you get a chance to see them live don't pass it up. It's a real Cirque du Horror, and not an experience you'll forget quickly.

I remember thinking the mask thing was kind of gimmicky when I first heard of them and never really gave them a chance but they are a good metal band (better than Kiss, Gwar, or Insane Clown Posse) and the album is solid. I listened to this so long ago and should’ve rated it. Not really my thing I guess but I remember enjoying this one.

I know what to expect with Slipknot and they deliver on this album. A couple of good songs to sing a long to and a lot to drum your rage away.

actually good

Good shit.

This aged so much better than I’d expected. Excellent album.

Better than the last Slipknot album, and I liked that one a bunch!

unique. heavy. dark.

Good album. They really improved their style and sound over the years. May not have the same catchiness and earlier release, but lots of technical improvements

This is not a bad slipknot album, quite honestly, I quite like it. But its inclusion in this list baffles me. It's where their chaotic original sound made way for a mainstream approach. And less of a trailblazer. Best part about this album is the drumming. My god, does it stand out.

Some good songs here. Snuff has long been one of my favorite rock songs. I actually enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. It is very screamy, so I understand why some people don’t like it. It’s a 4 for me.

I do understand why this album has such a low average rating, this definitely isn't the most accessible music in the world. I am unapologetically a huge Slipknot fan. You can't deny that everyone has demons and struggles they suffer with, and this kind of music is cathartic. It's tiring to always be angry at all the awful shit in the world, so listening to music like this feels like I'm having Corey Taylor be angry on my behalf when I don't have the energy.

"Psychosocial" and "Snuff" slap, and I love the drums portions of most of these tracks.

Every metal band wants to be slipknot for a reason

I don’t typically listen to Slipknot for fun, but honestly will more often after this. Psychosocial was a pivotal song of my youth and it fucking goes.

Slipknot is a gateway drug to the whole nu metal genre and I'm here for it.

I went into this album expecting to give it a 2 or a 3 but I came away with a broader appreciation for it. The screaming parts aren't my favorite but they punctuate a lot of songs really well. Favorites are "Snuff", "Psychosocial", "Sulfur" and "Dead Memories"

Litt koselig gjenlytt. Føle stemningen speila godt kordan eg følte meg mens eg mekka infrastruktur-configs til appen min

The last good Slipknot album, but probably the weakest of their firsts. Still one hell of a ride!

Have a thought for the drummers poor legs on that bass drum. 3.8

Very good metal album

I loved Slipknot, was cool on Iowa, so didn't bother with this. I missed out! Bar a couple of trad rock songs that did less for me, it's great fun. Nihilistic, but fun.

Definitely will be bias considering this album is the album that got me into Slipknot The first album that made them deviate away from their original sound and their unfortunate last album with Joey. It's a good album, though definitely one of their weaker albums.

In general I like this album. It has a lot of energy and it's overall good metal. Still, I prefer Rammstein because just german sound more fitting to me in this genre. At some parts the english feels just a little too corny, a bit like like Linkin Park sometimes. I will surely delve a bit more into slipknots music after this, cuz they're for sure influential af. Wouldn't really take the praise as far as their overly presumptuous spotify description states. 7/10

I remember this was the first slipknot album I was disappointed in because it wasn’t as heavy as the previous ones. Listening back, the genre had really changed.

Thought for sure I would hate this but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The musicians are very talented, but I'm just not into this style too much. I think they fall into a limbo where they are too poppy for metal fans and too metal for pop fans, but definitely worth a listen. Strangely, despite the screaming presentation, the messages in the lyrics are pretty good if a little cheesy. Just under 4 stars for me.

The drums sound like they’re being played by a machine, it sounds mechanical with how fast and loud the percussion is. Gehenna caught me off guard, could have sworn it was Jonathan Davis from KoRn doing the vocals with the whispered tones but it was a solid song. Psychosocial was furious and fun. Vocals overall are a bit of a sticking point for me, not necessarily bad I don’t know just something that is kinda lame about it but the band itself is so tight on this album I can’t go lower than 4 stars

metal is a genre that never quite gets its due. slipknot's all hope is gone is extremely good and deserves to be on this project. any music of the metal genre has to have good legs to stand on--meaning, the instrumentation has to be good. i think the instrumentation of this album is incredibly solid. honestly, in a way, the vocals are distracting. the gritty, demanding vocals are perfect for slipknot, don't get me wrong, but it takes focus away from the instrumentation. and let me tell you, these drums are extremely fire. many of these songs are of the typical death metal style (look no further than the opening lyrics to "butcher's hook" or, you know, the actual album title), of which are done very well, but god does slipknot deliver on the more sentimental songs. there's a reason "snuff" is one of their most popular songs.

Förvånansvärt bra för att vara så pass metalligt.

Un album mature, avec des artistes qui maîtrisent leur instrument et ne versent pas dans l’esbroufe. Bon équilibre entre le chant mélodique et le cri guttural.

I've never really listened to Slipknot before. Because of the masks I mentally labelled them style over substance, like Kiss etc, and ignored them. That said this album is better than I expected. Not perfect but there's a few songs that I saved to my library to listen to again.

That was a great record. A lot of variation and different sounds etc.

Weird that the band themselves dont love this record. I think it’s as good as any of their others, and I like it a lot.

neke malo preheavy za mene al ostale vrlo nice, snuff preeekrasna

Slapnuts. Best thrash band 10/10

Essential Tracks: All Hope is Gone Gematria (The Killing Name) Sulfur Psychosocial

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would, some harshness but I expected it to be worse. I can see why it's highly rated.

The last Slipknot album to include the original lineup is also one of their best. The songs are more structurally listener friendly and there are even ballads on this thing (“Snuff” in particular) but at the same time Slipknot manages to never lose the anger and dizzyingly massive sound and even delivers some of their heaviest material on “Gematria (The Killing Name”. Especially the trio from “Sulfur” through “Dead Memories” are as perfect as it gets, but there are still moments on All Hope Is Gone where I can sense the difficulty of being 9 people in a band all contributing to the songwriting to some extent.

I like metal, not a massive Slipknot fan though but can’t deny that this is a good album

I enjoyed this much more than I was expecting to! There’s definitely much better metal out there, this is pretty basic, but it’s well done and surprisingly accessible for people who don’t listen to metal.

Pretty solid for what it is. Slightly left field mainstream metal. Not really for me. Prefer the screaming to the earnest singing.

Great band. Big fan of the dual drumming.

This is such a great album to cut the grass to by murdering those blades of grass and head banging the entire time Sulfur is classic slipknot singing Psychosocial has been on my snowboarding playlist for years and is a song that I could absolutely see myself getting in a fight with a Jerry too Didn't realize how many bangers were on this album I didnt know many of the song names. Sulfur, psychosocial, and dead memories all go so hard The album was starting to lose me for a bit just turned into way too much metal. But Snuff brought it back that's a new song for me which was great. The drumming on the album is definitely the highlight that man is banging some skincans hard There were definite highs and lows on this album. The highs were just so baller that they outweighed the lows

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Gematria, Sulfur, Psychosocial, Gehenna, Snuff

Metal con algunas canciones que parecen baladas. Está bien. Un 4.

This genre isn’t my thing. That said, this feels like an absolutely flawless execution of all of its ideas. I can’t earnestly give it a five, but this is as close as an album like this could be.

Love me some Slipknot

More interesting and talented than I was expecting, which is, of course, totally on me. 4 stars.

Went into this album only knowing the song psychosocial, came out of it really liking it, great album to get you pumped up, especially me for working out, highly recommend.

As a Slipknot fan, 10/10. No, I'll give it four stars. It's a solid album, although many songs sound same-ish. I love the alternate cover, the one with the more spooky feeling. Snuff is an all time fave ballad, Dead Memories was one of their first songs I heard. I have vivid memories connected with almost every song on here. That part of the chorus of Gehenna - love it. The Vermilion remix is one of my faves. + Psychosocial + Vendetta + Butcher's Hook + Snuff + Child Of Burning Time + Vermilion, Pt. 2 - Bloodstone Mix + Gehenna

Weird choice of Slipknot album to have on the 1001 album list. Not the one I was expecting as there's better Slipknot albums like Iowa in my opinion. All Hope is Gone got some good tracks. Gematria, Psychosocial and the title track are all bangers. They're great and quite accessible with a ruthless style mixed with a somewhat melodic approach. Sure Slipknot is commercial metal but not everything have to be hardcore underground metal.

I've been a fan of Slipknot when I was a kid (I also celebrated my 16th birthday at a concert instead of having a typical Sweet 16) but there's so few albums of theirs I've chosen to sit through the whole thing. I did really like this album but it's definitely not their best one. I feel like a couple songs lean on the side of being way better while live, even if I haven't heard them at a concert. Tracks 6-9 feel like something an edgy 17 year old would listen to which sucks because it started so strong but it picks back up with This Cold Black and after.
