Reviews (page 8 of 8)

I cannot go above 2 because American Pie is the worst song of all time. I don’t mind the rest of it in a John Denver sort of way.

I just can't listen to country music

I've only heard the song American Pie and don't mind it, but find it overly long. After listening to the album, I can see why this is the song that gained popularity. 2.5/5

The highlight of the album is just the one song, "American Pie". The other tracks are more or less traditional folk songs, and, yeah, they are a little boring.

Boring

Don McLean has two good songs and they are both on this album

Besides "American Pie," which became an anthem for a wide range of situations and the mandatory soundtrack for half of the movies/series produced in the USA, since it is indeed a great song, the rest of the album is not bad but is forgettable.

A long long time ago in an Irish pub far far away… Simple piano and Don singing softly. Quite a range of topics here: lost love, suicide, etc. But “American Pie” is carrying the weight here. I won’t be back for the rest of the album.

Too melancholic for my taste.

honestly vincent is pretty. but i hate american pie as a song it’s just. idk. a quintessential boomer song. it’s a good album but i fucking hate the cover and the title track. i understand that it is a good song and i kinda like the story but ya. it’s kind of a boring album but i didn’t hate it entirely.

The title track and Vincent are obviously Seventies standards and I like the cover photo, but the rest of the album leaves me a bit cold 🥶

oh man, I thought this was going to be good. But now I realize Don McLean was just another 60s/70s folk singer who would have been lost to the dustbin of history if it weren't for one super hit. And on re-listening to American Pie for the first time in many years, it's catchy but McLean's singing voice is still annoying.

Better than I expected, but I still consider Don McLean a one hit wonder. And what an annoying played out hit American Pie has become. Some decent other tracks mixed in here, almost convinced myself this could be a 3, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

American Pie: a soaring eagle Everything else: subpar

A long, long time ago In a galaxy far away Naboo was under an attack And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn Could talk the federation in To maybe cutting them a little slack But their response, it didn't thrill us They locked the doors and tried to kill us We escaped from that gas Then met Jar-Jar and Boss Nass We took a bongo from the scene And we went to Theed to see the Queen We all wound up on Tatooine That's where we found this boy Oh my, my this here Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry He left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye Sayin', "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi" Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi Did you know this junkyard slave Isn't even old enough to shave But he can use the Force, they say Ahh, do you see him hitting on the queen Though he's just nine and she's 14 Yeah, he's probably gonna marry her someday Well, I know he built C-3PO And I've heard how fast his pod can go And we were broke, it's true So we made a wager or two He was a pre-pubescent flyin' ace And the minute Jabba started off that race Well, I knew who would win first place Oh yes, it was our boy We started singin' My, my this here Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye Sayin', "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi" Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi Now we finally got to Coruscant The Jedi Council we knew would want To see how good the boy could be So we took him there and we told the tale How his midichlorians were off the scale And he might fulfill that prophecy Oh, the Council was impressed, of course Could he bring balance, to the Force? They interviewed the kid All training they forbid Because Yoda sensed in him much fear And Qui-Gon said, "Now listen here" Just stick it in your pointy ear I still will teach this boy He was singin' My, my this here Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye Sayin', "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi" Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi We caught a ride back to Naboo 'Cause Queen Amidala wanted to I frankly would've liked to stay We all fought in that epic war And it wasn't long at all before Little Hotshot flew his plane and saved the day And in the end some Gunguns died Some ships blew up and some pilots fried A lot of folks were croakin' The battle droids were broken And the Jedi I admire most Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast Well, I'm still here, and he's a ghost I guess I'll train this boy And I was singin' My, my this here Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye Sayin', "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi" Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi We were singin' My, my this here Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye Sayin', "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi" Weird Al did it better. 2/5

2/5 just because I like the title track 😅

Mid album, I liked one of the later songs but overall a dull album

I didn't listen the album in its entirety. Sort of lost interest in it about halfway through.

American pie is the cream of the crop

I love sad stuff and this sounds like the kinda song I'm gonna put on twice because the first time didn't hurt me enough. Well maybe three times because Till Tomorrow was so short. Overall it's only iconic because of two songs and most of the other stuff isn't nearly as strong to hold interest over repeat listens.

I enjoyed it I guess. Feels like the whole album happened and I didn't realize it. As in, nothing stood out to me.

Som en fattigmans Bob Dylan men med jättetråkiga pianolåtar

I've never really liked American Pie (the song), it goes for too long and folk rock (term used very loosely) isn't my thing. Never heard the rest though. Never mind, the rest is basically b-sides of the same shit. Gets a 2/5 because it was only half an hour.

Everyone knows the opener, and it's a good song (although overstays its welcome by about 50%), but the rest is really average, nothing I could ever see myself going back and listening to again. Very beige, slow songwriting. You can get away with pretty banal lyrics if the music has enough energy and interest to get you through it without really thinking, but this is slow, and lyrics-focused without the good lyrics to actually focus on. 2/5.

If an album was a sixth form common room

Dramatic fall in quality after the first track.

Never actually sat down and listened to the title song, I basically only ever hear it driving or shopping; it's fun if overplayed, but the rest of the thing wasn't anything to write home about

two good songs but alas the rest are sappy and boring

2/5. American Pie the song is great and there are some other good ones here but they do just feel like covers of better singers and writers. It’s okay to listen to but don’t think I’ll be returning.

One hit wonder

With complete honesty, I got a bit bored of this album after the first song. McLean has a beautiful voice and can definitely write a sad song, but other than that, I didn't find appeal. Fave track(s): American Pie

Simple and peaceful folk music. Cool... not. Melodies and lyrics are pretty (reminds me a bit of Donovan), but they're all boring and predictable, not capable of offering anything interesting. Everyone loves "American Pie" and I agree it's not just a cultural icon but a fantastic folk rock composition. I started to like "Till Tomorrow" and "Vincent" when the mood was fresh until I realized this was pretty much going to be the rest of the album. "Crossroads" is a pathetically lame ballad, "Winterwood" is shitty country, "Empty Chairs" is the most forgettable song despite having the 3rd most plays, "Everybody Loves Me Baby" is a 2nd-rate "American Pie," and "Sister Fatima" tries to put a Cohen with the guitar but misses the point. I actually like the ominous vibe of the closing two tracks... kinda reminds me of 2000s indie folk like Mountain Goats. Favorites: American Pie, Vincent, The Grave

Behalve de titelsong kon het mij verder weinig boeien

Titelspåret är ju en klassiker men i övrigt var det inte särskilt kul.

American Pie e dessverre ein av dei sangane som plage meg mest i verden. Resten va ok-

Obviously everyone loves American Pie. Correction: everyone loves the situation that surrounds a crowd singing the song in unison but may not necessarily love the song itself. It has that group dynamic. After that song, this album has nothing left to offer except generic old folk singing. If you like that, you’ll like this but it doesn’t stand out to some of the other great folk albums on this list.

I skipped the opening track, don't need to hear Pie ever again. Kept my expectations low, and I was pleasantly surprised by this album. A few poor tracks, but overall I didn't hate it.

bye bye ms american pie!

Some dismally slow and sour guitar ballads bookended by great, uptempo folk rock. Some of the effort in ‘American Pie’ should’ve been smeared around the other tracks a bit more to make this a steadier listen.

Starts off with a massive hit and then gets more folky and truthfully a little sleepy

right off great peaceful voice. american pie is a long song but you never feel like you’re waiting for it to end. vincent van gogh song. winterwood is terrible. goes up and down so unexpectedly and weirdly. the album is not what american pie gives it off to be. plenty of slow acoustic songs. but he doesn’t do the best with them. he seems to always miss the catch.

It's all a load of ballads. Don sounds like quite a nice guy, but nothing here really grabbed me. Seventies schmaltz.

not my thing

This album doesn’t have much for me. There’s a good reason why American Pie is the only song known from it.

One hit wonder? In my book. Other than American Pie the album was forgettable.

Un incontournable à connaître. Très smooth. Pas mauvais, mais faut être dans le mood. La chanson American Pie est assez efficace.

Okay. Interesting little guitar tricks and games with melody and harmony - probably, I mean, I'm not an expert. Unfortunately, Don MacLean is just so annoying. Lyrically, everything is drenched in a claggy sentimental syrup. Far too many adjectives for EVERYTHING. Some deeply self indulgent belief that the masses don't see some hero figure (big bopper van Gogh, whoever) quite like MaClean does because - don't you know - MaClean is an ARTIST just like THEM. God, what an annoying characteristic. For what it's worth, Vincent would probably think he was a complete drip. Overall impression is that the album is as self conscious as a precious teenage girl and about as precious. Musically, Elton John did the same thing better.

Dreary.

It's sometimes quite sweet but ultimately a bit dated

T3B 1. American Pie 2. Everybody Loves Me, Baby 3. Till Tomorrow

Folk has always been hit and miss with me, and it's more miss than hit. I've never particularly cared for "American Pie" (the song), so I didn't have high hopes here. My (lack of) expectations were justified. The best I can say about this album is that if it didn't exist, we wouldn't have Weird Al's "The Saga Begins." That'd be a damn shame, so thanks for the assist, Don.

I really hate “American Pie”. I’m always a little embarrassed to mention it, as it seems like everyone else likes it, and I always feel people judge me for being un-American for hating it. It always seems so cheesy to me and the lyrics always make me cringe a bit. Plus, it’s almost 9 minutes long. In any case, I had never listened to any other songs by Don McClean. If I was only rating that song, I’d give the album 1 star. After listening to the rest of the album, I’ll upgrade it to 2 stars. Still not my type of music (too boring) by any means, but the rest of the songs don’t annoy me as much as American Pie does.

The rest of the album is better than the title track.

The instrumentation and production are fine, but it’s all just terribly sappy.

Though American Pie is a classic, Don sounds the same in every song.

The title track obviously carries the album and likely the reason the album is on the list. It is a great song, but it is long as it is close to 8 minutes long. I was familiar with Vincent but I thought it had a different title. The album is folk music and pretty short. Besides the two known songs, the rest of the songs are unnoteworthy. I don't think I will listen to the album again.

It’s definitely listenable and I don’t hate it, but I definitely wouldn’t seek it out or intentionally put it on. It’s not terrible, it’s just definitely not my style and taste. I really did like one song that reminded me of my grandma, that one was super sweet and special to me. I can see how you could like this album, it’s just not my thing

Starts strong but all downhill after that. The music died about 15 minutes in

"Vincent" is nice.

I came for the American Pie and that's all I got.

Bit slow for me but had a couple good tracks

Bog standard late 60's / early 70's folk. Soft finger picking, warbling vocals. If tiktok existed when this came out, I'm sure it would have been music used in terrible feel good videos. Best Tracks: American Pie; Vincent; Empty Chairs

The first time I ever heard this song I was 10 years old at a Chuck E. Cheese birthday party and the karaoke MC was singing it to us bratty pre-teens in between our pitchy screeching renditions of Spice Girls and TLC songs. Now I realize he wasn’t singing to us, he was singing to himself as some sort of protective self-care break mid-gig to persevere through the remaining hours of his shit job. The day the music died indeed.

The first song is a classic and I really gave the rest of the album several go's, but I can't remember a single note anymore. It's all quite forgettable

Any album that contains one of the defining songs in the history of America is worth quite a lot. Beyond the title song, this is a relatively milquetoast early-70s folk album. It's pleasant and modest, with a few minor highs. Overall, it's a good burst of nostalgia, but not sure this album would be rated very highly without its masterpiece.

Очень уныло... Но заглавный трек хорош.

Typical american acoustic-rock songs. Not for me. But American Pie - good song. I like the scene from Friends when Phoebe's boyfriend singing this song.

I appreciate the lyricism and storytelling and there isn't anything particularly off putting about the songs. Don's voice is crystal clear, and the tunes are catchy. But it's all sort of eye-glossingly boring to me. I say that, then I feel like I'm an ingrate who is overlooking gorgeous nuance of the music, and I'm haunted by visions of my furrowed browed Dad shaking his head as he says, "Pearls before swine."

Ich finds nicht schlecht, ist halt bloß langweilig.

A part American Pie, l'album est vachement chiant quand même. En plus Don McLean est vraiment pas qqn de bien ni de talentueux. Prefs: AMERICAN PIE, The Grave Moins pref: Crossroads

AP is a tune, Vincent is very annoying and the rest is pretty anonymous singer-songwriter 70s stuff. So a 2 for the greatness of AP chiefly.

Cool, but a bit repetitivo

Unsure if I find this album banal or that I've heard American Pie so many times it is a trite 8 minute slog.

Apart from American pie, thought this was a bit dull. Not one I’d stick on again.

2/16/22: Parliament - Mothership Great funk album. I feel like I heard half of Dr. Dre’s The Chronic in these 7 songs. 2/17/22: Don McLean - American Pie Meh. I feel like this album is on here strictly because of the title song

2/5. Enjoyed the title track but a bit bored by the rest. I agree with that review: the music died on track 1 and didn't come back for the rest of the album :D

Ok so notwithstanding the fact that the title track has been grossly overplayed it’s still a classic. Is not Don’s fault that everyone overplayed it amirite? It’s also one of the most annoying earworms ever, again that’s not Don’s fault. The song has some wonderful tempo changes throughout and I like the clever references to other bands: Byrds/eight miles high, Jack Flash/The Devil, Sargeants/Helter Skelter. The rest of the album is another matter though. Boring sleepy time sachrine that brings its overall score way down.

Ugh, is it over yet? Yeah, could die happily without ever having heard this album. I might even choose Kacey Musgrave over this album (sorry feff). Doesn't help that American Pie is one of those songs like Stairway to Heaven or Hotel California where I just can't do it anymore and would change the station if it came on. MAYBE liked Winterwood was ok but note the big 'maybe'. Hate giving it a 2 with such a classic song but overall, just had to do it.

Saved Prior: American Pie Off Rip: Vincent, Empty Chairs Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Went into this expecting it to only be here for the title track (which bangs). He seems to take a while to rev up the interesting music engine when he writes a song (two longest songs were clearly two of the better songs). Thank goodness the rest of the songs were short too cus they were snoozefests. 2 stars.

alright, but somehow too christmassy

C'est sûrement bien, mais c'est cette époque de rock américain que je kiffe pas trop.

You know what, I tried but apart from having the title track and Vincent etch in my memory this album kind of washed over me. By the numbers overly sentimental pop-folk

American pie was much more nicely sung than i remember. Otherwise it was all a bit meh

Boring, mediocre folk pop album.

Not for me, although more interesting songs than I would have thought.

Before listening: - Name one Don McLean song that isn't American Pie. - ... After listening: - Vincent! - Now name two. - ... But seriously, it's not bad but just a bit bland apart from the title track.

A one hit wonder with a bunch of meandering ballads for deep cuts. Wannabe Donovan.

Iha ok

Mostly meh with a couple of lovely moments.

One amazing song, the rest average

2 good songs but the rest is dull.

Aside from "American Pie" there wasn't much here to keep me entertained.

The song American Pie starts off, hard to forgive how old hat this song is, but it is a well-crafted story song. After that overplayed song, we start more typical sunny folky 70s sounds. Vincent is the other big single, and it paints a much more intimate picture than American Pie.

Classic title track. Everything else sounds the same and is too mellow for me.

Never could get into Don's music

Not a big fan of Americana, quite boring

Don McLean is a two-hit wonder. Overall boring, simple album with a couple moments of genius.

That one song everyone loves then a load of other less good songs sounding a bit like the one song everyone loves.

Thought I would enjoy this more than I did. Used to like American Pie (the track). Reminds me of a road trip round Ireland when I was a kid and rinsing it on my sisters Walkman. But it’s a bit boring now as was the rest of the album

A high 2 but still a 2 innit. Some nice songs but a fair few which passed me by too

Loved American Pie! Beautiful lyrics and guitar. But after 3 rd song I lost interest. I need more switch up to love a whole album.

Not that into the folk thing

It was alright. "American Pie" is actually not the best song on the album.

Very samey

2 great tracks and the rest is kind of meh

Lululuuuuu

כמה שירים חמודים

Bah, pretty ignorable

Some solid Americana, only really liked the title track though

love the long version of American Pie. The rest of the album is somewhat forgettable.

Well, I liked this more than I anticipated. I don’t know how much that’s actually saying, because I was 1000% dreading this. But I liked nearly every song more than I like “American Pie,” which I will count as a victory. Anybody else remember that great moment in an episode of MAD MEN where they used “Babylon?” If for no other reason than that, 5 stars. Okay, two.

american pie is fun but the rest are just country folk songs which is not my jam

The title track is still so fucking good, and much of this record is pretty good. But it drags and by the end I'm tuning out.

Dom som gillar visor och så vidare älskar den här skiten. Jag är inte en som älskar visor. Men detta är välskriven musik, fattar att albumet är på listan. Sjunger fint. Men inte för mig.

The only reason this is getting more than 1 star is because of the song "Vincent"

The title song is good but overall not my cuppa tea

Didn't really do much for me. Do McLean is just a one hit wonder, and that's how it will always be. I'm not an American Pie hater though, that song has its place.

Nice... the perfect ending to a full week of 1-star albums... Look, if this were the first time hearing the title track, I might have felt differently about this. But it's not. Not by a long shot. And speaking of long, that title track feels so much longer than a mere eight and half minutes, doesn't it? Whenever I hear that first "A long, long time ago" on the radio, I reflexively flip to something else or just turn the radio off, as silence would be preferred to having to endure that "long, long" rambling yet again. Hopefully, today's full listen (on principle of the challenge) was the last time I ever have to hear this song again in its entirety. As for the rest of the album, it's pleasant enough, I suppose, though a bit too sleepy for my personal tastes. In fact, like the title track, it feels much, much longer than it really is. For me, this is a 1. The main feature of the album is the title track, and it's simply too long and has been too overplayed for me to feel anything but disgust for it. Damn, what a terrible week this was... I dare say, the week the music died...

Fuck this was a snore. I guess it had American pie so that’s something?

#413 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ Revisit? ❌ The name Don McLean is familiar, but I've not idea from what context. I of course know the song American Pie, it's been played so much in all kinds of movies and situations, but I wonder if any other tracks are familiar. Oh yeah, he is folk artist. I hate folk. (I'll admit this is not the worst I've heard, the guys has a nice voice and timbre to it. That's a nope 1/5 from me.

I hated this 30 years ago when it had a resurgence in the mid 90's and I hate it even more now. Everything about it. Even just the words I'd need to use to describe it. If you make it through "Vincent" in one sitting you should go get a hotdog or something to reward yourself

I'm only 100 albums in on this journey and I'm already feeling folk rock fatigue.

This album is a great litmus test. It has one great, if overplayed, song at the very start while the rest of the album is uninteresting and boring, to put it lightly. So you can tell by someones review if they are actually considering the entire album or only thinking of the one good song they've actually heard before and ignoring the rest. American Pie should probably be included in 1001 SONGS you must hear before you die, not albums.

American Pie is the best song on this and it’s not a song I ever want to hear again.

El día que esta lista murió.

Diet Coke Jim Croce.

Nothing about this stood out to me, and in good conscience can I give this anything higher than a 1.

Oh my fucking god will the boomercore slop ever end?????? I'm so fucking sick of this shit, may have to skip these albums next time I inevitably get about 5 in a week

straight up ass

Honestly.....this album was just lame. Just a bunch of Boomer claptrap. It's all the American Pie single. That's what this guy is. What about the other tracks? Nobody gives a shit. People just want eight minutes of pop culture symbolism wrapped in a flag. I don't think it deserves 1 star but I don't think it deserves higher either.

begint met een afgezaagd nummer en verglijdt zachtjes in dertien-in-een-dozijn slaapverwekkende klaagzang... nee bedankt

Too many english and american singer-songwriters on this list. Lyrics are pretty banal. 1.5/5

After American pie it all sounds the same to me.

Heard Before? Only "the song". Notes: - "the song" is nostalgia porn. yuck. - perhaps the ultimate 70s single-plus-filler album. - "Vincent" did remind me to listen to much better songs about Van Gogh by Jonathan Richman and Joni Mitchell. Verdict: It sounds like Gordon Lightfoot wrote this whole album while sleepwalking. Listen Again? Please, no.

Ey ma this is too america I ate pasta with gabagool so im Italian now meet at aunts for some real music forget about it

A case study in why it’s important to rate the album. as a whole. “American Pie” is undeniably a great accomplishment (and i say that despite the fact that a guy in my sophomore year dorm blasted that (very long) song once every day, for the entire year). But the rest of the album is mostly a putrid mess, including derivatives of the title track, more maudlin nostalgia, purple poetry. 🤮 A 1 (anger inducing).

The wheels fall off this after the first track. And honestly, even the first track is now pretty cringe even if I really liked it as a kid. Sorry Dad

I hate this album

Partly heard before Saved 1/10 Top track: American Pie

"This song alone should be enough to put it on the list" 🙄 We have a 1001 Songs book for a reason. Overall: 1/10

Bye bye American Pie. I could say that I liked you, but that is a lie. You drove me to drinking whiskey and rye, thinking "this is the day I hope I die, this is the day I hope I die"

goddamn this is the most boomer-coded bullshit I ever heard

Yikes. So many good albums that could have been on the list. So many good genres that are underrepresented. Don McLean...? Really...?

Just way too much folk in the 1001.

Absolutely turgid.

Not for me. 1/5

Wait Don McLean recorded other songs? I see why they titled this album American Pie. No denying the power of that song. The rest were just fillers lacking any sort of substance. Poor guy. Really wanted to like the rest of this album. Unlike the cover, thumbs down.

I’ve always secretly hated America Pie. And I don’t care for the rest of this folky storytelling album either. 1.5

I've hated the title track of this album most of my life. Was not looking forward to listening to a whole album, but I did, and I was right. Nothing against Don or his fans, I just hate this type of music. Shoutout to a few small parts of The Grave for being almost listenable.

Terrible

Not good. So old. Didn’t pull much from it

Any goodwill earned with American pie was lost with the g slur. 1 star

Here's a slice of Americana (Pie). Donny is really only known for the title track but it's a good one. Gotta hear it every 4th of July or you just ain't a patriot. Even if Weird Al made a better parody, it gets this album on the list. The rest of the songs are lackluster in my opinion. McLean is a poet and is a solid lyrical storyteller but I'm dozing off. Won't revisiting this record but will play the hit annually...1.35 stars.

Not good. Boring. Sounds like open night mic at the local dive bar...

Fuck Don McLean

Pretty depressing, pretty dull

Like the Travis album I got the day before, it's an album you can only like if you're a child of the right circumstances. I'm not. The most American thing about me is my love of gas station hot dogs, and I didn't have a dad or grandpa to gaslight me into pretending this is good which I really think is the only way anyone could possibly like this.

Really all this album has going for it is the title track. Some others sound like o.k. alternate versions of American Pie. Not that impressive if 1/10 songs is worth listening to. 1/5

Entirely juiceless man

Maybe if I’d never heard the title track before (I’ll be damned, karaoke, moms, grade school, and tv!) this would have made more of an impact. I feel the narrative around this album’s inclusion on the list is something like “it’s more than a one-hit wonder!”. But when the other singles and album cuts are very… ok… what’s the point?

The ultimate boomer story. Write a great American anthem and live off it for 50 years. Then deny that COVID the vaccine was safe...

I can't stand American Pie. 1/10

Maybe it's time to let this music die...

Meh, next

There are a handful of songs I never want to hear again, the title track is near the top of that list. Turns out i never want to hear the rest of this album again either.

This guy can make two types of song. Slow acoustic, and “American pie”. Seriously, “Everyone Loves Me Baby” sounds exactly the same as American Pie. Such a boring and overrated album. Probably only on here because of nostalgia.

This album is a trap. I dont think it needs ot be here ... Sure. A rock n roll moment. But is this really essential listening? The song yes. The rest no. Guys! c’mon...Maybe my first time for the whole ALBUM. The nostalgia inherent to track 1 is drawn out and expanded for a whole album, as if by a Spinner at a Wheel of Gloom. Now I don't blame people for throwing out the album in frustration. I own a discarded copy myself. Ha! I get the joke. The cover is so iconic. Its says “All American Party its all Ok”, but its not. Bait and Switch? Who wants a copy of the pop folk rock equivalent of Auld Lang Syne? Tricky. And a Bummer. And now I need an antidote to lift my spirits now! yuk.Wish i didn't listen. Bastards.

God damn singer songwriters.

No thanks, beyond the title track— the songs are almost indistinguishable bog standard folk songs that are not my preference.

This is the color beige in album form. Although in the most daredevil sections, it does attempt to make you fall asleep through some daring crooning about something or another. Miss American Pie is the most famous track off this album and it has always been grating to my ear. I don't know if it's the sadly saccharine tone and how it goes on about a changing America that has never existed for a lot of us, or maybe it's just the singer's nasal vanilla voice. It was a tough sit through the rest of the album.

First of all, it's insane to make a 10-song, 36 minute album and have the first song be fully 25% of the album's running time. Second of all, Don McLean is wack as hell. Billy Joel with an acoustic guitar without any of the charm. The only person to have been definitively bested by a Weird Al parody. An abusive piece of shit, too. Extorted his own wife and daughter, essentially. The day his music dies will be a joy.

Did you know Don McLean had other songs besides American Pie? May as well not. this is fucking boring.

The title track is an early entry in the canon of tedious boomer rock self mythologizing. The rest is like a hippy Billy Joel, or a best a saccharine Nick Drake with the dark pathos replaced by bland sentimentality. It's mostly gentle and inert acoustic guitar/piano open mic night crooning and insipid lyrics. The slightly more fleshed out arrangements like on Winterwood (with a shuffling snare, a bit of melodic bass, and some pretty electric piano parts) give it a bit more liveliness.

🤷‍♂️ Wertung: 🥧(🥧)/5

No me gusta el folk

I resent being made to listen to any album where the best song is American Pie by Don McLean

Albumet ofullständigt

1 popular song

Ugh, this guy. "American Pie" - No one should make songs about "The King" and "The Jester" unless their name is "Bob" and "Dylan". This is one of the songs that gave boomers their insufferable status. Good piano playing (McLean is not playing it). I'm not going to track by track this one. It mirrors other stuff coming out at the same time. It's Paul Simon without the plain observation, Nick Drake without the sincerity, Joan Baez without taking a stand, Lenard Cohen for optimists. It sounds very cleanly produced, I'm sure that's a big reason why it's on this list. But I'm not a studio technician, so whadda ya gonna do.

You need to peel away the layers here. You need to forget about all those Shitty FM rotations of the lead track. Remove that memory of Tyson Fury and ringside karaoke. The only way to approach this album is to listen to it as a virgin. I felt alone and naked. But once your pants have been pulled down, American Pie is quite a song. I found it hard to pick up any reference points listening with fresh ears, Rock meets ragtime? The rest of the album was Paul Simon outtakes. Appalling.

American country... 1 hit wonder. Sehr ruhig

Tooo slow and boring

Boring

Lo único bueno es la primera canción. No estaría aquí si la música gringa no estuviera sobrerrepresentada

Folk music not my thing and this album only reinforced my dislike. American Pie is much like Stairway to Heaven, overplayed and overrated. I change to something else as soon as I hear it start. Listening to this album, especially Babylon, reminded me of being back in a Catholic church, as a kid Not only made me sleepy, made me consider converting to Satanism. I cranked out some Bon Scott as soon as this album ended. Felt better and quickly dismissed the idea of joining the dark side. Fav song is Everybody Loves me, baby. Just because it was different than all the other songs. I would give zero stars, if I figure out how to do.

one song which is famous, but not even good

Given that the opening track is actually more irritating to me than my recurrent stomach ulcer, I can't say I'm filled with joyful anticipation of this. Still, except in exceptional circumstances, I have to listen to every minute of every track. So 8 minutes of untreated sewerage is on its way... Well, it's terrible most of the way through, and I think I made more effort to sit through it than he made writing and recording it. The last two tracks are an improvement, getting a mood that is atmospheric and interesting - it's too little too late, but look at it this way - it's a high one star album - not one where I wish there was a zero available.

Boring. Really dislike the soft story telling vocals. Instrumentals were uninspiring.

trop chiant

I’ve listened to some dull albums in my time, but this one takes the biscuit… annoyingly dull!

Tricia Restivo gave me a ride to school every day and she always blared this from her Suzuki Samurai. It was better than taking the bus, but I swore I'd never listen to this again. I prefer pie over cake, but always abstain from Don McLean.

Las cosas que hacen escuchar a uno.

Good but it’s been done to death at this point. Dull dull dull

I'm bettin' this is gonna be more Blah Old White Guy Music. Folk is really not my bag. At Song #2/10, I'm thinking this might be a 1/5. WAAAAAAAY too fringe-jacket-and-round-sunglasses-playing-guitar-on-the-lawn for me! Ick. Triple ick. So much hippie-ness. I'm feeling bad that I want to give it a 1, but really, a 2 would be charity. Not my bag.

I had a right good snore up to this. Fucked me right off. Right, I'm off to guzzle a gallon of Guinness in a beer garden. Ta-ra.

More 70s gold. I bet Robert Plant's favourite is 'Everybody Loves me, Baby'. Absolute baby botherer.

Apart from the 2,very well known, hits on this album it felt dated and mawkish- sorry

Do not like

Ugh. Schmaltz. Dull.

boring

A mostly instrumental album with a vibrant mix between psychodelic and eerie.
