Reviews (page 7 of 8)
It did not catch me.
This was boring. Pretty, but boring.
Got all excited for Deerhoof, then remembered I always get these guys confused.
Middle of the road indie rock that is all over this list.
It's not terrible (better than Krautrock and Nick Cave and Scott Walker), but it's not very good. Again, yet another album on this list that really shouldn't be on this list. I would have been perfectly fine not hearing this album before I die.
I enjoy that this project exposes me to new music. I do my best to be receptive, but in the end it comes down to just liking what you hear. I don’t want to dump on Deerhunter as a band because they’re well received and it’s high quality and creative. But meh, nothing new for me to see here. Thanks, anyway.
Never heard of Deerhunter before and, now I’ve listened to the album, can confidently say I’ve still not heard them. What a bland album. Didn’t even really notice it was on, and certainly not a song that grabbed my attention. I’m going to have to listen to it again and try and pay attention as first listen was just blah background noise. Ok, second listen was better as I heard the songs and music. Still found it a rather bland album with no track jumping out at me. Technically not bad though, but as nothing grabbed me it’s getting a 2.
Thought I was going to love this - didn't
This is a tough one and feels like the kind of thing that probably suffers from this format of listening in a day and then judging. I wonder if I would rate this higher had it been a Friday entry? It faded out on me at points but there was some stuff I liked and would like to really properly listen.
It has moments that tickle my taste, but in the end, I’m glad I got there.
The best thing about this album is I've already forgotten it.
Not my style. Rather boring.
2,4/5
Ok 2/5
My biggest compliment is that Halcyon Digest is boring. This is definitely music and it's listenable, but it's all too dreamy to pay attention for longer than one song. Deerhunter's album flows and is full of shoegaze, and even evokes a sixties/seventies feeling (particularly in "Memory Boy"), but it all comes back to me being too darn bored.
I mean, this wasn't awful, or even really bad, but the psychedelic-shoegaze sound that this album heavily employs just bores me. The touches of dream pop don't really help matters, either. Not really sure what makes this such essential listening, but it didn't do it for me.
Eh, wallpaper music
1.9
Nothing to say
Look, I have never really been a fan of indie rock. My group has gotten quite a few albums that've been put under that label, and it's pretty rare that they completely click with me. I mean, even accepting genre as a spectrum and less as something with defined, hard lines, there have been very few YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROTs I can gel with and a whole lotta Arcade Fires that I'm just baffled by. The critics seem to like it — I can't figure it out for the life of me. So, what, is this album gonna end up being some secret cheat code to finally getting it? Nah. Not really. Not at all. No. I mean, this thing had a pretty promising start with the first track, "Earthquake". It made me think this was gonna be a much more sonically interesting album? One where maybe I can discuss "feels bad" music and how, while I do a share of those kinds of songs I like, I just generally don't have too much room in my life for the harder stuff? But then the second track hit and, ah, no, it's just an indie rock album. Maybe there's some kind of lyrical theme that ties it all together. A fellow member of the group I'm in theorized as such: it's something about looking back on a life well lived and then dying at the happiest possible moment. Or something? This theory didn't convince him to bump his score up from a 3 (though he did anyway for the sake of the site), and it's sure not convincing me either. So if this thing had to live and die on the strength of its sonics... Then I guess it just dies. It's like biting into a piece of stale food. It's not offensive in any way, but somehow it's worse than if it actually made me throw up. At least I would be able to tell people about the time I ate something bad enough to vomit on the kitchen floor. Who would want to hear me talk about biting into a stale piece of white bread? Nothing remarkable about it whatsoever, and wholly unengaging. I seriously debated with myself not even finishing the record for just how bored I was by the halfway mark. I didn't, for the record, but I came **very** close. And it **did** take me a few hours to return to it once side one had ended, so... Look, this album is just a bore to me. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with it, and if you're really that deep in love with the whole spectrum of indie rock, you might probably get a kick out of this. There are a few interesting moments here; they are completely keeping this thing from a 1. (Heck, I kind of liked "Helicopter", to be 100.) But on the spectrum of indie rock, yeah, this is leaning closer to Arcade Fire than anything else. And maybe this is more of a reaction to my boredom at indie rock as a whole than to just this album... But probably not. Hey, Randomizer! Next time give me something more interesting to digest, huh?
Ok, so I tried, I really tried, but there just isnt much here that I like. This sounds very experimental. It's just not my thing.
This is the kind of music I think stoners would like.
Very forgettable
che noiaaa
mah
Not for me, issa 2.
I read a Brian Eno interview in the 90s where he talked about how many bands sent him demos, wanting him to produce their records. They were almost always dull, but occasionally the demos were badly recorded in a way that was inadvertently interesting, despite the averageness of the songs themselves. (Mind you, Eno went on to work with Coldplay, so take that as you will.) That sums up Deerhunter's Halcyon Digest for me; a bunch of mediocre songs, lackadaisically played without verve or vigour, but occasionally recorded in a slightly interesting way. As I listen, I find my mind wandering and thinking about their recording techniques, because the songs and playing and singing aren't very engaging. If this was more professionally produced, there wouldn't be much of interest on this record at all. It's pleasant enough (although the saxophone on Coronado is not good), but I have listened through three times in a row, and I swear I cannot remember a single note after it has played. This was pretty highly rated when it was released, but I think that speaks more to the parlous state of alternative rock in 2010 -- this album was #3 on Pitchfork's top albums of 2010, which proves what a really dull time it was. You really needed to look elsewhere than alt rock in 2010 to find exciting music. I do like the cover photo, though.
Snoozer, 2010s indie folk
This album is pretty nothing, honestly. It's some fine 2000s indie rock, but I don't think it does anything different or better than any other generic modern indie rock. This is so un-notable, that I didn't take any notes on it while listening. Usually, I'll write a couple of things that stand out to me, including my favorite song, as they happen. But even my favorite song from the album is so mid that I didn't note it until a couple of tracks later. Favorite Song(s): Sailing
This album bored me to tears. One playthrough is definitely enough and I have no plans to suffer through it again.
Distinct sound, but too much sameness for me. Definitely took some risks but had a clear vision
Low energy, sad indie music: I thought this would be in my bag, but honestly it just doesn't click. Honestly, for my tastes, for as low energy as this is, it may not be sad *enough*. At the very least, the kind of sad served here doesn't do much for me. Earthquake is an admittedly strong start, seemingly informed by slowcore, and pretty great. But after that, we get a little more "regular indie" with the sound and while this *does* have a sound of it's own, I'm still just sort of whatever on it at large. The songwriting isn't bad per say, I just haven't clicked with it, and honestly, most of this didn't leave a strong impression on me. And that's too bad, I really expected to like this and I'm a little disappointed, maybe just because this isn't what I expected. But I will leave this open to future listens, I do kind of get the sense that *something* is here.
I really could have died before hearing this album, no sweat. It just boring vegan Cafe music.
Not my speed
Generally did not enjoy this! One of those 2010 albums that I was told by music critics and friends was gonna be one of the next big things, and while I even had a couple songs from this album on my college, I was always suspect about the quality here! And I think time has justified me! Other than being on this list, has this album had an outsized influence on anything? What even is it? How would you describe it? It’s very half-hearted and unsuccessful ambient experimental pop? Maybe? Idk it just leaves no lasting impression to me! Sorry!
I think I missed the part of my 20s where I was supposed to start liking indie rock. I hated this.
Well this is Indie as fuck! This album definitely has a unique sound to it. I'm far from an avide indie indulgeder and this genre is not my style. But I can give it a little credit, very unique indeed. I won't be listening to this again and my low rating is based of of personal taste only.
Add this to the pile of other generic late 2000's alternative rock records. Nothing distinguishable on this from a bunch of other similar bands from the same time.
When there are melodies in a song they are repetitive to the point of boring.
Layered and atmospheric.
Great for people who find Pavement too uplifting and vocally gifted.
Digo...¿no podrían dedicarse a otra cosita?
Meh. This wasn't horrible but it was pretty unremarkable. There was nothing here that was good enough to distract me from reading the paper while I listened.
Fine, just not for me.
Bored now
BOOOOOORIIIIIIIIIINGGGGGGGGGGG (except Helicopter)
Favorite songs: Memory Boy, Desire Lanes, Fountain Stairs, Coronado, He Would Have Laughed Least favorite songs: Earthquake 2/5
Litt kjedelig. Noe var eksperimentelt, men ikke på den kule måten.
A few songs were enjoyable but the lyrics were so self absorbed I just wanted to speed through the album.
I had to listen to this twice for any of it to sink in. Not much sunk in. Very derivative music, that felt like more of a "spot the influence" exercise than actual fun. Two stars.
Day528 - never heard of this and wish i hadn’t now. the shoegaze sound isn’t sonically appealing
Boring.
It's fine. But not very memorable. Sounds just like every other shoe gaze album/band. Another 2.5 stars
Enjoyed the first few tracks but then it really started to drag
"oh why oh why" indeed. This is what I imagine the inside of Perry Farrell's head sounds like when heavily medicated.
Tämä ei nyt lähtenyt. Oli melkoisen psykedeelinen alku, eikä se siitä juuri parantunut.
Ei jatkoon.Toki pari ihan ok laulua
dreamlike and forgettable 2 star
It's all been done before by better people, one song sounds like a Sigur Ros ripoff, one sounds like generic indie band sample #8 in GarageBand. It's not bad per se, it's just so bland overall apart from the abrupt ending, that caught me off guard.
Album art is too scary
A few nice bits but they play each theme to death.
I cannot remember a single thing about this album.
FAVO: Sailing, Desire Lines
So there is nothing overly bad about this album, but theres also nothing good, I didn't dislike nor enjoy it
Memory Boy
A shrug of a record—dreamy, muted, and fine. Some nice textures, a consistent vibe. It’s easy to like, but just as easy to forget. Pleasant enough while it’s on. One of the 1000 albums to hear before you die? Only if you’re out of time and there’s nothing else around.
Weird and different, but not in a good way. Did not like the opening song at ad ll, and it didn’t really improve from there.
Couple decent upbeat songs but too much depressing bs
It’s not bad. Not overly memorable, but wasn’t a chore to listen to. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
It didn’t hold my interest for very long. I listened to the whole album but at a point with nothing to latch onto it just became background.
I liked helicopter — the rest meandered and was pretty boring.
Honestly, it’s just meh. Not bad, not great. So I’ll damn it with the worst review - a 2. Too boring to think about again.
Another bog-standard indie rock record from the last 15 years. This one is a little bit dreamier and a bit more psychedelic than your average. There are some highlights in ‘Coronado’, ‘Fountain Stairs’ and ‘Desire Lines’, so it’s not all bad, but overall while it’s pleasant enough when on, it doesn’t linger much in the memory once it’s over.
Yet another indie shoegaze band. 🥱 Easily my least favorite genre and one that I did not even know existed before my 1001 Albums project started. Thanks for nothing Dimery.
Deerhunter's "Halcyon Digest" is a blend conventional indie rock with influences from 1960s pop, predominantly leaning towards the former while significantly drawing from the latter such as on tracks like "Basement Scene" and "Fountain Stairs." The album features several decent songs, including "Memory Boy," and "Desire Lines." In general, the album is filled with decent, yet unremarkable, tracks, however, the vocalist's delivery often comes across as bored or disinterested, Overall, the album is decent, but not exceptional.
I've tried to get into these guys but something's missing here. It just isn't clicking with me.
Sounds like retro 60s updated. I’d rather listen to the 60s.
Pretentious. Bleh
Okayish indie rock/pop album. A lot of whiny/airy/boring tracks, but a few decent spots make for an okay album. Could definitely have trimmed some fat and made a much better 25 min EP. Top tracks: Desire Lines, Helicopter
Originally I thought this would be more diverse and interest than it turned out to be. Shame. Memory Boy is pretty catchy, but the album is pretty same-samey and generic. I swear there's actual duplicate songs in this. 2/5 stars.
2.5 - nothing fantastic. Pretty drab and inoffensive
Not my kind of pace
The Good: We’ve got an Oscar winner! The Bad: It did not win an Oscar for best musical score… The Ugly: It did not get nominated for a Grammy either… I’ve said it once, I will say it twice, and might even repeate it thrice to bring across the message: not much good has been produced post 2000s, and this album, IMHO, proves my words to be wise and true… Why do I have to listen to this “sonic exploration” of the “Indie canon”? The previous according to music critics… who also happened to rank this album as #3 between 2010-2014 according to Pitchfork… well, if they didn’t rank the album Albatross #1 the list is absolute garbage. So, Lo-Fi… not my thing. Deerhunter, not my jam. Halcyon Digest, after three listens, not to be listened to ever again. 2* for effort, as I reserve 1* for Rap...
begint redelijk maar verzand in gepriegel en navelstaarderij... vocals doen ook geen goed voor de muziek... instant vergeetbaar
I came, I listened, and I came up with the most redeeming observation I can muster: This one was a bit better than the last two.
Totally unremarkable.
Hipster shoegaze rock that doesn't separate itself from the endless drivel of hipster shoegaze rock in this era. I think I heard this album in the film 500 DAYS OF BOREDOM. Every community had a band like this. Nothing special.
easily got lost in the background could i write poetry to this? n
The musical equivalent of plain, white, unflavored yogurt. Cultured, yet formless, colorless, and flavorless. Too easily confused with late-00's/early-10's Indie groups Deer Tick and Dearhoof. Give it an extra half-star because this album was engineered by David Barbe, the former bassist for Sugar.
I've heard this before and actually like a few of the songs. But it's nothing special. There's tons of indie bands that sound just like this.
Not really for me.
nothing grabbed on this one, just meh
Not unlistenable; I liked a couple of tracks but I can't understand why it's on this list beyond somebody insisting on another change for the new edition and this being released the same week. Rightfully, I've never heard of Deerhunter or this album.
Couple good tracks, but not anything on here that's life changing.
Some good some bad
I’ve heard much worse on this list, but this isn’t good.
2,5
I really really want to love this album. At the time it was raved about and as a band they're adjacent to so much stuff I like. But there's just something meh about it to me. I don't dislike it but it just literally washes over me. Which makes it above a 1, but not sure it's a 2.
This album is very chill. So chill in fact that it is better describes as boring.
Melancholic and a little drab. Not the most inspiring but I could see it being good for introspection. Better than some other indie shoe-gazey stuff but nothing hit home for me.
Alright I guess
It isn't bad it's just not piquing my interest at all, just really bland
Even the band sounded bored. 2 okay songs
Boring indie excess
2 Stars (5/15)
By all indications I thought this was going to be edgier. Idk, it was just slap bang in the middle of indie so much that it felt... neutral. At some point in the middle of this I stopped to watch that video of a mushroom playing the keyboard and I was more musically invested in that
Very chill vibes. Could put on as background music, but not intentionally in my ears
This wasn't "bad". It wasn't "good" either. It was exceedingly bland. Dullness writ large. "Desire Lines" is the perfect example. Each phrase lasts just long enough to be irritating. A generous 2/5.
09/01/25 This was definitely not the album I wanted to listen to on the way into work or going home. So wet.
Not a bad indie album, but I never felt like it was offering anything new to me. I felt like I had heard it before. And I had to laugh when “he would have laughed”sounded like “Satellite”.
With a band name like Deerhunter I expect either country or prog metal, and this isn't either of those things. I know, don't judge a band by the name, but I don't think it really fits and in a weird way it takes some of my perceived authenticity away. Would I be happier if I believed they hunted deer literally. No. What's my point? No. Now on to the actual album. There wasn't much here for me. It was a quiet, slow and somewhat boring listen. When I was getting into a track that I wanted to at least check the name of to see if I wanted to list it as one of my favorites on the album or remember, then it brought up drug references and as much grief as I gave about the band name I just can't get behind the idea of a non drug user liking a song by a band that likely doesn't hunt deer. Sometimes an album just doesn't click and that is ok. Favorite track "Fountain Stairs" 2/5
Generic 2000s indie rock. Insert in a generic 2000s indie film about growing up in a small town.
Dull as ditch water
Evidence that there was a lack of good music in 2010.
Didn't really care for it.
Album 614 of 1001 Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest (2010) Rating : 2 / 5 Not sure why this is on the list other than being a favorite of whoever made the list. It isn't offensive to the ear but just isn't anything there.
Not my cup of tea…
#420. All these songs are basically just slightly different variations of the same boring song. Mustaches and plaid hipster indie that girls with wide brim hats inexplicably love. 2/5: pretty boring.
Pretty in places, but this kind of occluded, fuzzy-image-in-the-rearview-mirror indie fades away into the background all too readily. Half this album went by and I hadn't really noticed anything. On the occasions where I did zoom in, it all started to sound repetitive. That's not just my impression - guitar figures literally repeated themselves over and again. To some this might create a sense of atmosphere, but there wasn't enough mustard to back it up for me.
nothing about this really stands out, and it was a chore to get through at times. it doesnt really set itself apart.
Absolutely nothing of note. You’ve heard this type of music before and done better by other bands
I've never been into indie rock, so every band sounds the same to me
Nowt I haven't heard before, and done better. Some nice riffs going on, but those airy vocals can leave on the next train out of town. It's a "meh" from me
This is not my thing. Lo-fi emotion that’s easy to unintentionally tune out. That said, it wasn’t BAD.
Puh. Geht so.
A bit interesting, but I feel like if you only enjoy psychedelia xor indie, this will be a frustrating listen. It was for me
The author of this book really has a type. This sounds a lot like 147 other bands on this list. Oh why, oh why, oh why is this special? It’s fine at best. Not at all bad. It’s kinda nice in some places. But this is pretty ordinary overall.
Feels bland. Memory Boy reminded me of the Beatles, but not as good. Other songs kind of remind me as Oasis, but also not as good.
I enjoyed the listen through, I did skip some songs. Maybe I needed to be in the right mood for it because I usually like this type of music.
So far, this album really hasn't made much of an impression on me. It has some cool sound design, but I feel like this could blend in with any other sound from the time. It's not bad, but it's not something I would seek to put on.
Not bad but it didn’t do much for me
Doesn’t deserve anything higher than a 2 but I don’t mind this type of music
It just feels so blah. Nothing special going on here. Won’t revisit. Not unlistenable.
Bit dreary, this.
Somewhat relaxing, but also boring. Like I'm in some kind of trace. Not a lot going on here. Not easy to understand what is being said either. Highlights: Memory Boy
Seemed like fairly standard indie with a washy, dreamy filter over the top to give it a sort of shoegazey nod. This sort of music seems to be a whole genre in itself that just doesnt click with me. I don't mind the dreamy sound but it isn't a substitute for song ideas.
Noticeably unremarkable. 2.5
To paraphrase Spinal Tap, none more 2.5. But I'm rounding down.
It's another indie album by another indie band I never heard of. My expectations were low, so it was no surprise that listening to this album didn't leave anything memorable. A quick scan through the tracks acknowledged this impression right before I wrote this.
I’ve had a really good run of albums recently. Unfortunately, this run had to end at some point. I wouldn’t say this album is awful, but I definitely did find myself tuning out and getting bored. In different contexts, this could have been a nice listen. However, having it on while working just made it feel a bit like a nothing-album. It didn’t make me feel anything, and I probably would have felt no different if I was to work in silence. Again, it didn’t make me feel annoyed or negative in any way. It just made me feel nothing.
incredibly made of nothing
Very meh
I found Deerhunter to drag on a bit. Some interesting parts at first but then becoming repetitive. The album just didn't hold my attention.
ended up being unmemorable background noise
A lot of the music press praised this album as a highlight of Dream Pop… I don’t know about that; more like Sleepy Pop to me. Nothing grabbed me, except for “Helicoptor” which did bring that dreamy vibe aesthetic that had me smiling. Other than that mostly forgettable for me.
most of it - okay! the song helicopter - amazing!
Beetje saai, voegt niet echt iets toe. Experimentele kant kwam ook niet echt goed uit de verf.
This did absolutely nothing for me. Pure distilled boredom for 46 minutes.
Well it didn't make me want to kill myself nor did I make me want to get up and dance. Solid 2 stars. The cover art is the best part.
It had some good moments, but mostly I found the album passionless and unexciting. Nothing about it was bad exactly. With so much music available in the world (thankfully more than 1001 albums), it's doubtful I'll listen to this again.
It was OK, but no candidates for my playlist. The first song started with an interesting promise, but then just kind of dissipated. Nothing else really stepped in to be memorable. I actually listened several times while doing other things and still couldn't tell you anything about most of it.
Of all the albums of all time, this is certainly one of them.
Had its moments
Honestly just nothing really stuck with me throughout this album. I feel like it went in one ear and directly out the other. I don’t really have much criticism about it, which is good, however I just don’t see how it is largely influential.
Congrats Deerhunter, you made the most generic indie alt rock album I've ever experienced. This is a truly amazing achievement.
fairly forgettable in my opinion.
Not really my vibe
Usually a fan of indie stuff, but this really did nothing for me. Not terrible but definitely wouldn't listen again.
Eh
Rock, but chill. Not like “soft rock” of the 80s, just very background - like, electric-guitar coffee shop music.
2 or 3 ok songs but mostl a snoozefest of warbly quiet alt rock.
I dunno, just not really feeling this one. Some cool atmosphere but not a fan of the singer and lacking in memorable moments or melodies. Best song: Desire Lines
I don’t know. There was something missing inside the music. I don’t have the language to expand on the feeling.
Rather dull
As a sad white man in my 30s, I thought this would be perfect for me. I didn't get into it at all, though. It feels a bit dull almost, and everything seems buzzy in a droning way, not a rewarding way. There's a non-zero chance that I return to this and it becomes a favorite (like Bon Iver, which took multiple forced listenings before it clicked with me). But on just a first listen this was something of a dud.
I was really into indie music from about 2005 - 2015. I remember this album only because of the album cover and interesting band name. After listening, I realize why I don't recall anything about it. It's pretty unremarkable. No songs that stand out, grab you, move you. Generic indie music mixed with shoe gaze and a sleeping pill.
Had some okay stuff, but is there anything that new or groundbreaking?
Quite dreary.
Some albums you put on and they make you sit up and listen because they really grab your attention and you either love it or hate it. Unfortunately this one just played on and there was nothing in it to grab me. I really wonder who puts these lists together, is the top 500 albums ever by sales and then 500 that they bought because they were in the cheap bin?
4/10 lulled me to sleep
Sailing Memory Boy Desire Lines Basement scene Very slow and all felt the same. It’s music but nothing ground breaking.
Boring, lazy, uninspired music where nothing exciting happens.
Like a less interesting Arcade Fire. And the first track pissed me off, what's with the added scratch on the vinyl vibe? Some sort of hipster bollocks?
Background noise at best. Very repetitive. Forgettable and I won't be going back
Started horrible, slowly got ok, then crashed at the bottom
Meh
What a shame. High hopes for this after the first track but was left disappointed. Found another couple of tracks I really loved, especially ‘Fountain Stars’ but just left frustrated overall.
Meh, just not my thing. Kind of moody, atonal, like it wants to be shoegaze but doesn't groove.
Had to finally turn this off at track 8. First three songs vocals were totally blurred. Next few songs slowed down and didn't get better. Seeing the Impractical Jokers guys in a meme saying let's make them listen to this one!😂😝
I was so tired of this album that I almost skipped out right before the OK songs. Still...
If you manage to stay awake through the first couple of critically acclaimed snoozefests, there’s a decent indie rock album waiting ahead with a couple of great songs. It’s just a shame it’s produced in the dullest way possible by an entire room of tired insomniacs. I really can’t get over that hurdle in order to try to appreciate this record for what it might be.
So this is what hipsters like to listen to
So much meh. 1.5 stars.
This album has kind of an ambient, quasi-psychedelic vibe, but I don't think they've made up their mind if they want to be in kind of a noisy realm like the Breeders or if they're looking to be a little more experimental in the vein of Radiohead. It just comes out as a muddled product. Second half of the album appears to be better than the first. My pick for this album is Desire Lines.
Very drony. Interesting guitar parts and creative chord changes, but really overly drony for me. Not interested.
Nothing amazing about this airy album
This is a band that clearly finds itself fascinating but it bored me.
i honestly don't know, maybe it's a good album but im definitely not hearing it again
Didn't have to turn it off. That is as much praise I can give!
Not great. Easy to forget.
not my favorite
simple but ineffective :/
honestly not my fav, kinda boring
Erittäin outo ja "raskas" levy. Taisin siirtyä suotaan podcasteihin tämän perästä kun ei tehnyt mieli kuunnella enää musiikkia :D Pitäisi ehkä nähdä ja kuulla musiikkivideona jotta sävelet saisivat myös artistin maalamat kuvat visuaalisesti esille?
Hassu kokemus. Kuulosti siltä, että joka biisillä eri säveltäjä. Ihan ok kuunneltava
So, I am going to file Halcyon Digest under, "albums that I am not smart enough to understand why they are so great". Is Halcyon Digest different? Yes. Is this album technically "music"? Probably. Do I want to listen to this album again? Not really. Digging deeper into the band Band Deerhunter reveals that they are of the noise rock/shoegazing genre, which makes perfect sense after listening to Halcyon Digest. Heavy use of guitar effects, distorted/echoing vocals, random sounds sprinkled in - it has it all and then some. Also, when Pitchfork gets all excited about an album you know there is some level of pretentiousness and unapproachability for the average listener. God bless the people who are into this type of music, you deserve your exclusive fan club that us regular schlubs will not gain entry to. All and all, Halcyon Digest was tedious to listen to and I just don't get the appeal. You can call me old for being out of touch with the music that the kids are listening to these days, but I just can't with this album. It gets an extra star for being different, but that's about all that is redeeming about Halcyon Digest.
Sounds as if an indie version of George Harrison was on the verge of falling to sleep. There are some pretty moments, but I don't think I will ever think about this album again
I just don’t get the appeal of this dreamy indie. It’s pretty boring, there are times with a bit more energy like Desire Lines and I like He Would Have Laughed. 4.3/10
The opening of the album was challenging. Still adjusting to the experimental vibes I have encountered on this journey. But by the end of the second track I was into the groove of the album and allowed myself to just inhabit that space. Good experiment for stretching my musical tastes, but probably not something I will return to.
There was some really fun stuff here but the rest of the album sounded like the fun stuff but not as fun.
this isn't bad, but it *is* the exact flavor of boring indie rock that plagued me for about 2007-2011 because every guy who would hit on me in certain settings would tell me I needed to listen to it, they're very literary (use wordsrlike halcyon) and that it really captured their innermost feelings and then I listen and it's just, like, "isn't it sad that time passes and the last time you see a friend might be the last time you ever talk again? deep moody thoughts in here" yes?? life's a bitch and then you die that's like the whole point the xerox flyer promotion scheme described in the wiki page just sounds like "street teams" of the warped tour era but for kids with a printer in the family room ok ok I'll stop now musically it had some bits that approached fun
some songs were fine but others i did not vibe with
Default preset indie rock. First song was really cool, then it started sounding more and more like Youtube "How to uninstall McAfee tutorial 2015 punjabi" background music, with the world's most generic vocalist singing over it. Third time I've heard this album and I still don't get it. This seems like something I would eat up like it's breakfast, but it doesn't seem like it'll ever click. Shame on me.
Som bem chatinho, desnecessário
AJ: no matter how “indie” you are, the first song on your album can’t fucking suck this bad. 5 minutes I’m never getting back. Sounds like mmj without any feeling at all. Which is hard to do. Tin can vocals aren’t cool, you sound like shit.
Meh
Nice sound, easy to listen, but too plain. Needs some more rhythm
A rather moody indie record. It’s fine but he sounds like he’s drooling the whole time. At least it has some semblance of atmosphere.
It was interesting, very melodic, quiet, thinking music. It reminded me a lot of Vampire Weekend, but not as good. It was ok, I don't think I'll be recommending it to anyone
I can get into dream/psychedelic/indie pop, but this one didn't provide enough of an engaging soundscape for me. In fact, this album felt like it just dragged on and on, a lot longer than the 45 minute runtime lead me to believe. It might require another listen. Best Songs: He Would Have Laughed Listen Again: Maybe
This came out around the time I started reading Pitchfork. I listened to it quite a bit as it had some hype. Didn't click with it then and didn't now either.
It's fine. Some cool instrumentation, but not really my jam.
It's OK. Drags on a bit.
Just alright. Very mellow indie XRT feeling album
Not for me
Sounded pretty standard to me, not a bad album but nothing i will remember.
Just about tolerable.
There is nothing, and I mean nothing extraordinary about this album. uninspired Lo-fi indie distortion rock that meanders between annoying and almost good. There are one or two good songs, but the album as a whole I'd pass on.
Simply a bit boring. No song captured my attention. All digestible but nothing captivating.
Tried this one and found it unspeakably dull.
I grew up listening to this kind of indie rock in this time period. While I don't dislike the album, I'm failing to recognize how this album stands out among the other lo-fi, garage rock albums of the era. Good album, but not among the 1001 must listens of all time.
Liked it. Probably not remarkable enough to listen to ever again, but it was nice enough.
Meh.
This basically sounded like a very boring Tame Impala record
Good to have some experimental and slightly obscure indie music on this list, I guess. I’ve listened to Deerhunter on occasion, but don’t find them to be that memorable.
„Nett …“
ok
Halcyon - denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful. If nothing else, thank you Deerhunter for expanding my vocabulary, best of luck in your spooring endeavours. 2 lexicomane dictionaries out of 5 📙📙
Didn't get to the end of this...dreary, run of the mill indie fodder
OK album, don't mind listening to it, but also wouldn't mind if I missed this in my life. Nothing special
Bit too boring with some exceptions
Where’s Waldo (or Wally) presents a unique sensory pastiche, one that demands a close examination to seek out hidden delights - much like this album. However, like this album, once you’ve found Waldo, there’s not a lot to keep you pulling it off the shelf. That said, I got sedate Wilco vibes. I can get down with that.
Couple of pretty good songs. Pretty dull though.
surprised this one is here it came out in 2010 so its not that old but it isn't very popular or influential very forgettable indie folk 2.5
Meh. Nothing here that I can appreciate... Except the production!? 2/5
It was fine but didn't it sound like British Invasion 60's? Maybe a Dave Clark Five albums with a blanket over the speakers.
kinda boring.
Nighttime gloss on a broadish selection of guitar music is as indie as it gets. The production gives a smooth arc to the proceedings; Call that success. Not a memorable night.
Incredibly boring, but maybe I'm missing something.
was background noise. did not stand out in anyway that made me care about it.
It was ok, some spacey indie ‘10s action
The mysterious album cover inspires some curiosity, especially being a band I've never heard about. However, it's just generic 2000s rock without much personality. 2 stars is enough
Okay I guess. Just a bit bland. Nothing bad but nothing good.
Listened Before? N Oh lord. Indie rock from 2010... aka hipster shit. I'm good on this. Just because it has low production value doesn't mean its good. I'll pass. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Revival (because it's short)
Pulling from a lot of different genre influences, but rather than resolving into something like an "eclectic mix", which I'd be more on board with, it just becomes a sludge
Not something I found particularly inspiring. I was tolerant of music like this when it was new and fresh and I'm less enthusiastic about this sound now. There was nothing wrong with it but it didn't strike me as particularly beautiful or well-crafted given the sea of similar music from the same time period. Perhaps I missed something?
Kinda boring?
To ethereal/ experimental.
Feels like it’s trying to take itself wayyy too seriously. I can only imagine these guys playing this live.
Another boring one to me, better than Steely Dan but not enough for me to bump it to a3. Favorite song: Coronado
Int jättebra om du fråggar mig...
Mostly boring
Boring songs that left a lot longer than they actually are.
Tyytyy hyvään soundiin, ja koukut jäävät vaisuiksi. Minkä takia voisi olla perusteltua erotella tämä hittejä sisältävistä kakkosista kuten Musesta. Toisaalta taas mieluummin erottelen tämän ykkösistä kuten The Young Godsista.
Didn't love this album when it came out, didn't understand why it was making so many critics albums-of-the-year lists, still don't like it 13 years later.
Njaaa niet top
It's like nothing ever happens on this album. Not bad or anything. In fact, not anything at all.
meh
Another unfamiliar one. I've never really known the difference between Deerhunter, Deerhoof and Deer Tick, and have probably confused one for another along the way when their names do come up, which seems to be frequently enough. I'm midway through my second listen of the evening on this one, and while I'm enjoying it a bit more than the first time it's still not doing a whole heck of a lot for me. But that seems to happen with a lot of Indie darlings for me - it's part of why I just avoided so many for so long, but I've been pushing myself to dig a little deeper and have found some gems along the way - but this one just isn't for me.
I don't understand the hype behind Deerhunter.
not my cup of tea
Chill
Dont remember a single song
Fine to listen to, not really anything to shout about but better than I initially thought it would be
This is another one of those 9.2-rated, best new album Pitchfork listens that I'm always eager to listen to...and then I just don't get it. I never connected with this Deerhunter album. I thought this band was a little harder rock, but it was a little more experimental and spacey than I expected. I could probably come around on them with some prolonged listening, but it didn't happen today.
pretty generic indie sounds of its era, nothing too exciting and not much different from Monomania (which is better). not sure why these people are considered "influential?
avaappa poika albumin sivu ja kato mikä iskee silimään... genreissä indie.... yrittää tehä jotain,,, hei käytetään kalikkoja tehdään ääniä ! crazy talented guy claps blocks and makes beat... no mutta pitikö siitä albumia tehdä. insertti onko tämä tärkeä albumi kommentti tähän. noh pari ok biisiä... sillon tällöin vokaalit hittaa... ja ambientti pistää pään sekaisin.... annetaan kaksi... desire lines
idk 2
zu langweilig
Yawn! I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, and it didn't. Just more chill vibes, which is fine I guess, but you can definitely skip this one. My top pick is 'Memory Boy' as it's the only track which made any impression.
Not for me
Some of the songs are tolerable like Revival and Basement Scene. But most of the album I found actively unpleasant, especially Earthquake and Helicopter. Overall this album is one big bummer.
Bang average
A pretty typical indie album that isn’t incredibly fascinating. Some of the album is a lot of synths and Lofi style sounds. The few songs that are a bit more mainstream are okay but still somewhat lack luster. I’m sure in circles there are people that love this album but I was not feeling it. 4.9/10
I think this is the definition of a forgettable album. Not like it was bad or anything but there was literally nothing that stood out to me on this album. I couldnt even tell you a song and I literally just listened to it 2 minutes ago. Boringggg 3/10
Generic yet weird. Boring yet confusing. Nothing terrible and a lot of variety, but not memorable.
Please no more bland indie
Generic indie rock, reminds me of some bands I like, but I did not like this one.
Sounds like your typical indie band. Are all indie band studios actually echoey abandoned warehouses or something? This did absolutely nothing for me.
Eh, not really a big fan of this one.
This really isn't doing anything for me. Seems like a tired mashup of a dozen different styles, none of them done particularly well.
An album that shifts between sleeping and sleepwalking. It’s not an offensive album to the ears, but lacks oomph. There are some songs with a bit more life at least, that help bring you back from the brink of total snoozing. That said, it could be a perfect after party album to wind down on or something you have a trip to.
This is not really my thing, but I kinda liked it for what it was, a new experience.
Today's treat was an indie rock band Deerhunter with their 2010 album Halcyon Digest. After some initial reading about the group and their music, I was very interested and was hoping for another record like I Am A Bird Now by Antony And The Johnson, something innovative, but entertaining and solid. Instead, the album sounded like it came straight out of the manufacturing belt in an Alt-J factory. Nothing on this cd screams (or even talks loud, going by this small metaphor), that any song is great or exceptional. In the ocean of new and old indie rock bands, Deerhunter is just another fish. There was one song, which I liked - Desire Lines. It had some nice moments, especially towards the end of the song, when the music was actually sounded like some dreamy sequences. Otherwise, I can't recall anything special that happened during those 45 minutes. I am disappointed by this album and I will gladly forget anything about this over the next few days.
I've never listened to Deerhunter but have been aware of them for awhile. Album was solid but kind of felt like a watered down version of other bands I already listen to. I might give another Deerhunter album a try in the future but nothing here grabbed me that strongly.
Halcyon Digest is alright objectively, just not my thing. Too indie, too stripped back and soft, admittedly has a nice resonance in places but not enough for me to give it more than a 2/5. Helicopter is charming though.
This sounds like someone making music as art rather than as music. It took until the 5th track before a song resembled music that wasn’t nonsense. The better songs here are Memory Boy, Desire Lines, and Fountain Stairs. The heavy reliance on reverb, echo, and feedback give all the tracks a space, unreal quality that perhaps is supposed to sound like dreaming or something. I don’t know. It also sounds like the songwriter typically grabbed the first three or four note hook he landed on that day and just made that the song for five minutes. There doesn’t seem to be any structure applied to the tracks. I read that this album and the band was given high ratings by critics. I wonder why. I wonder why I should care what critics like if junk like this is considered art.
Hum drum indie guitar music. Nothing special at all. A bit low key.
very indie. Not really my vibe
Ziemlich langweiliges Album ohne besondere Höhen und Tiefen.
Not sure why this is on the list. Fine but not ground breaking.
Not for me
I’m
Aburrido
Pop com alguns momentos envolventes.
i want to cry and not in a good way
ok
Never heard of this band before this. Probably for good reason. It's just boring. Bland and boring and every song sounds similar. Completely forgettable. 2.5/5
Fine, dull, won't listen again
