Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Deerhunter - one of the most hipster bands of the last decade surely, so no surprise to see them here.
some interesting tracks, some good tracks, i enjoyed the closer track a lot
Didn't know what to expect. Not a bad album.
Exactly what I thought this band should sound like. The last song was the best, but nothing else stood out to me. Middle of the road.
.. I don't know.. was a new one for me... has some good and "ok"s. I think you may find something here.
A band I have never heard of before - and it did not start well - thought first couple of tracks quite unremarkable and dirgy. Things improved when the tempo picked up and I particularly enjoyed Memory Boy and Fountain Stairs. Unfortunately am playing catch up so have only listened to it 3 times and I'm sure with repeated listening it would grow on me more. Currently I am 5/10 and will give benefit of doubt and round up as I think its a grower.
This is one of those albums that feels like it was made by truly talented musicians that wanted to do something a little different, but not just for the sake of being different.
Perfectly adequate indie rock. Has no soul though. Not essential listening.
Very indie-rock vibes. Was nice to have on as background music, but nothing really grabbed me. That's sometimes how I feel about the genre as a whole though there are of course bands and songs I like a lot individually.
I agree with a lot of the other reviews here. This is pretty straight forward indie music from late 2000s, early 2010s. Not bad. Better than some indie stuff I've heard.
3.5
Not bad ... I listened to the whole thing, then went looking for more. Like - what else have they done? Good music to listen to while working.
This was actually a very cool album, it reminded me of Arcade Fire/Pavement in places but loved the variety of instrumentation and lackadaisical vocals. Probably one I wouldn’t have picked but will be diving into more Deer Hunter - it’s an album I think you can get lost in, but can also have on in the background.
3.5
Well I though I was going to like this more given my affinity to psych, but I found that's at as a pure psych band, they were a lesser Flaming Lips and as a 60s psych pop revival band, XTC did way better. My favorite song "Desire Lines" pretty much reminded me of an X&Y era Coldplay. Songs like "Saling" "Basement Scene" and put me on the struggle bus for this album, the former being a new form of torture, I've found. But where is is strong, it pull it out of its low spot pretty well. (7.45) ★★★½
Like quite a few of the tracks, but jot something that really grabs me too much. 3.5 stars
3.5
I honestly don't know how to rate this. On the first listen I was like eh it's pretty generic. But then I listened a second time and was really drawn in by some of the background elements. But overall, nothing spectacular stood out to me. They kind of all sounded the same. I keep listening to it and my brain keeps refusing to acknowledge that these are indeed 11 different songs. Anyways, it could be a vibe for certain situations, I think the first track was the best, not great and not terrible so I guess it gets a 3.
6.5/10 fave: desire lines
Some interesting moments and some that drag.
Awesome
One that might grow on me with time, as I like a lot of their indie rock contemporaries but never really took the time to get into Deerhunter. Didn't blow me away, but I might return to this one.
Någorlunda hyggligt album.
Loved the intro to this which overpromised slightly on the rest of the album. The songs are good and have great arrangements. Unfortunately, they couldn't hold my attention and began to melt together.
2.75 Interesting, but not terribly memorable.
Very chill and pleasant, maybe too anodyne
Dreamy and relaxing. Has an alternative, lo-fi, indie core vibe to it. The opening track Earthquake is a gorgeous instrumentally lush track. Loved the heartfelt balladry of Sailing. Rest of the songs were mid. Also the hard cut at the end...what's with that?
A couple songs I really liked that had a dreampop feel to them but the rest of the album while not bad at all was just OK kinda boring indie rock vocals. I'll likely never listen to this band again.
Definitely rewards patient listening. Some songs that seem drab and uninteresting often build layer by layer until you're in a well developed soundscape by the time you realise the song had moved on from it's beginnings. Still other songs follow your dad's verse/chorus/verse music and that's fine too. It gives you a rest. All low key indie vibes. I'd listen again if I wasn't in the mood for excitement. Three stars.
I think other Deerhunter albums deserve a spot on 1001 over this one. it’s not bad but it feels pretty mild overall tonally. I like indie rock as much as the next guy, but nothing is majorly moving the needle here.
Enjoyed it. Not sure what puts it into 1001.
Look, english ain't my first language so I sometumes strugle to undertand whaterver it is that someone is singing. I didn't understand a word in this album... my fault (listened twice). Yeah, a 6.
It was alright. Not my favourite Deerhunter album. Some parts were good, some were just there.
Приятный голос, но альбом как по мне достаточно проходной
3 stars
Es un indie bastante oscuro que tiene bastantes recursos. Me gustó.
It was good but I didn't find it special
The album was ok - but nothing more. It didn't catch me. It was quite interesting to have heard it once. But that's enough. 3/5
Alt-pop music that didn't leave much to chew on.
This is... interesting, but three stars interesting I reckon. I might go back to it though, not sure how to feel about it yet
I found this pretty average and kind of generic. Nothing really stood out for me. I cannot see myself listening to this again. it was ok. 2 of the last 3 songs were good
good enough indie rock
Some nice stuff in there, but not enough to keep me feeling entertained or even interested.
I’m sure I have listened to this before, and I wouldn’t be resistant to listening to it again, but it’s not a particular standout. I didn’t recall any of the songs and didn’t hum any of the tunes later. It is competent, well-played indie. Listenable, enjoyable even, some interesting electronic noises, but not essential.
2.5 stars, fine but nothing special for me
Found this a good album, with desire lines and a real high point and an amazing song. However, a lot of the album blended into one. Will try revisit it again and see if it grows over time
It’s my first time hearing of Deerhunter. It’s the epitome of American 00’s indie. Quite repetitive and drone-like at times. I enjoyed Memory Boy the most.
Parts of this were great (Desire Lines is monumental) others were very boring. But quite enjoyed it in general, needs more listens. This could have got any score but I’ll go down the middle 3.25/5
This was a mixed bag, desire lines was an absolute banger but a lot of it didn’t hit. May score higher or lower on relisten and probably needs a bit more time
Ethereal indie rock, it gets a little lost in the noise on some me songs. I can appreciate what they were working towards, and it does land on a few tracks, but much of the album is just there and absent of emotional reaction. The atmospheric nature is nice and relaxing, albeit not engaging. Perhaps if they had polished this a bit more?
very good album.....
Not unpleasant, but this type of music never really grabbed me. I liked a few tracks, but found that it mostly faded into the background.
01) Earthquake - 8,0 02) Don't Cry - 7,5 03) Revival - 8,0 04) Sailing - 7,0 05) Memory Boy - 7,5 06) Desire Lines - 7,0 07) Basement Scene - 7,0 08) Helicopter - 7,5 09) Fountain Stairs - 7,0 10) Coronado - 7,0 11) He Would Have Laughed - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,32 (73/100) Current ranking: 233/432
Mellow with some fun gems.
This was alright, I think, I’ve listened to it twice and I can’t remember any of it, except that the last song ended abruptly, and had a great name
Halcyon Digest is an album you don’t want to end as it’s roots within dream pop and shoegaze mixed with ethereal indie guitar music send you into a beautiful trance.
Nothing special dreampop album. Some good songs mixed with forgettable ones.
It’s fairly inoffensive indie Nothing to take against Nothing to particularly fall in love with either
Deeply nostalgic for some period in time when everything was grainy and sunny.
Some fine music, and I could get into the more up tempo songs in particular. But, this fits well on a list of “1001 Albums That Are Fine to Hear Before You Die.” Not “must.” That’s the problem with trying to add new albums every year. But that’s not Deerhunter’s fault. Enjoy!
pretty alright, no complaints. I enjoyed the album but I'd Love to know some context from the guy who made 1001 must listen albums about why this one in particular. My main takeaway is how usually when I say an album doesn't sound like it was made the year it was made, I am talking about how an old album sounds like it could have been made very recently. This didn't sound like a 2010 album because I would have assumed it was a good bit older. Whether that makes it stale or an homage to the Zombies is a matter of taste
Had the weird experience where I was sure I had listened to at least some of this album before but then the only thing that was familiar was the intro to "Revival" - 2010s indie sleaze, I was there but I missed this one I guess! Nice tunes.
Esoteric music to take a walk to, enjoyable enough, but a must hear? Not to me
beach house vibes
I really wanted to give this a low rating because the vocals are very obviously bland and half-baked. But the instrumental's pretty good on most tracks, and it's enough to counterbalance the singing to create an overall neutral/slightly good listening experience. But certain parts of the instrumental are better than others. The chord progressions are engaging, and the percussion (whether acoustic or electronic) is pretty fire. Deerhunter is clearly great at creating an atmosphere, a setting for the plot to unfold. I'm normally partial to bass playing, but the bass is a little repetitive even for my taste. The guitar lines sometimes sound a bit like something from Create A Sim mode (exhibit A: Desire Lines) but that's by no means a bad thing. Overall, the vocals are holding the music back severely here. This seems to be a common occurrence on this list. 3/5 Key tracks: Revival, Desire Lines, Helicopter
Desire Lines is a good song and is the best one on this album. The rest of the album is fine. That's it, not horrible, or fantastic, just fine.
2.9 Kinda oversold the record in the wiki synopsis (universally critically acclaimed). Didnt hate it but felt a bit slow in parts. The wiki synopsis mentioned a song was a tribute to Jay Reatard, Checked him out, was good
The first song was terrible, I thought hoo boy, another album full of this noisy shoegaze shit. But the rest was actually decent and listenable. I would prefer if it was just instrumental to be honest, the music was better than the vocals. Stand-out: Desire Lines
As far as indie pop goes, this was more enjoyable than most. A lot of these bands sacrificed compelling musicality for adhering to what was popular at the time, but Deerhunter seemed to escape mostly intact.
If you like Arcade Fire and Radiohead but can’t afford a ticket, this would be a nice low-cal alternative . Not bad, but not terribly memorable.
I was as bored listening to this album as the band members seem to have been playing/singing for it.
weird hipster alt stuff. each sonic texture of each song is concrete. I don't know that I connected with any of it. Yea this is an album for people with skinny jeans and roll their own cigarettes while talking about Andy Warhol. Helicopter was the fist track that I was able to sort of vibe with.
I think albums like this might be why people hate shoegaze. Nothing here was particularly good or memorable, and I honestly think I forgot every one of these songs. I could put up with it, but my mind was definitely wandering for the full 45 minutes.
Last song sounded really familiar but can’t say why
Surprisingly okay. Actually caught myself grooving with the music a few times. But certainly not outstanding.
Arcade Firian. Band of Horsian. Almost low fi beats to chill to with the use of slower sounds and some electronic noise. I’ve had this band pop up on recommended playlists but never fully gave them a listen. It’s enjoyable but somewhat lost in a genre of music where this sound is abundant. 6/10
It was ok. I didn't like it but it was a mood after the 2nd and 3rd listen through
Indie shoe gaze isn’t usually my thing but this grew on me.
Interesting noise… Chill vibe, creative, might put on for background music and something different.
Album had good parts. Enjoyed it more as it went on. Standout songs: Helicopter Coronado
Indie alternative style music. I thought it was generally pretty good.
Very friendly
Pretty chill. A little on the weird side, but overall pleasantly surprised by this album.
Nothing unpleasant but nothing memorable. 2.5 stars
I can't say I've heard this album before. Maybe it needs more than one listen, but it didn't resonate.
Gotta be one of the most forgettable album on this list. Everything sounds the same, and alike to much of the music from this era. 5/10.
A little bit dull.
Some good, jammy bits. Nice textures. Beatle melodies. I expected it to be punkier, but that's my fault. Some duller parts, but on the whole a pleasant experience.
Odd but pretty goid
Welcome back! This is the album which broke my project. It was so complicated and difficult to give a score to this. Do I hate it because it sounds like all the other stuff? Or because it's so dull? Or do I love it because of the wonderfully expressive sonic landscapes? The moody beats? The smattering of catchy songs? Maybe I'm just saturated with the chore of assigning daily star ratings to albums. So all of that (and the cvpr deadline) led to me abandoning the project for a few weeks, and letting a small backlog build up. Back to Halcyon Digest. It's probably a 3 or a 4. I was going to listen from the start to decide, but because they broke the project they get a 3. Next. Best track: Memory Boy Worst track: Basement Scene
it's a high 3 and pretty interesting
Knew Desire be Desire ago
In my mind, anything that came out after 2009 might as well have come out yesterday, and chances are it sucks. Because, after all, it just happens that they stopped making good music as soon as I aged out of being cool. I can admit this is good though. Maybe it was recorded a couple years before, when I was still under 21, and just didn’t get released soon enough. That would explain it.
I should be more into this but i couldnt find a foot hold. The fault lies with me. Will come back to it.
Very nice to listen to while rereading Birman-Craggs
Indie rock with some lo-fi numbers and some songs that lean toward psychedelia and freak folk (a genre name I’ve always loved). Some of it was a bit sleepy but I liked the tracks with a bigger sound. “Desire Lines” was a highlight for me. And “Helicopter” is excellent. It reminds me of Beach House but with a weirder, psychedelic style to it. The saxophone on “Fountain Stairs” is a nice touch. And again on “Coronado”! This album gets better as it goes on.
I want to like this more than I did on the first listen-through, but it's just a bit too straightforward during this first time for me to really say I love it. I like the singer's voice and I like the instrumentalists but it's really a bit "paint by the numbers". The songs don't really dare, or push, it's all just a bit too dreamy and passive for me at the moment. Interesting that the final song is dedicated to the late Jay Reatard, he was a friend of some friends. Got a story to share in person @Steve. 2.78 / 5. Enough for it to be a 3. I think I'll like it more after more listens hence the bump up.
++: Revival, Memory Boy, Desire Lines, Coronado +: Earthquake, Don't Cry, Sailing, Basement Scene, Fountain Stairs, HE Would Have Laughed +-: Helicopter 7,6/10
ok
I kind of like Revival, Memory Boy; I almost like Desire Lines, Coronado
idk man
Never heard of this before. At first listen I hated how monotonous and unengaging it is. I was really bored and wanted to rate it 1/5. Upon further listens I found out that it's pretty good as background/work music. Still, the fact that the songs blend together and not much happens throughout the entire album makes it tops 3/5.
Kind of creepy and disjointed. Some of it felt samey but the bits that stuck out really stuck out.
Good enough to listen to but not really what I like.
I’m always intrigued when I get a band that I haven’t heard of on this project. This album starts out as fairly low key shoegazey indie before picking up with some nice 60s style psychedelia. Nothing world changing or revolutionary, but well done and good to listen to. The highlight for me is the Byrds-esque Memory Boy, dealing with the fallibility of nostalgia. A solid 3 stars for this.
I'm torn with this one. On the paper, it has many things that appeal to me. I have a soft spot for this kind of indie music, a bit shoegazy, a bit all over the place. But the first half of the album bored me, and then Desire Lines started and sent me in a whole other dimension. Then it's a roller-coaster, some songs are good, some utterly boring. Not sure to see why this album belongs to this list.
Never heard of these before. It's fine, but that's about as far as I'd go I think. Didn't mind it, didn't dislike any of it particularly, just wasn't that exciting or interesting. Just fairly bland indie 2.5
All around an interesting and ethereal listen. There were some songs on this that were amazing, beautiful drones; Others were uninteresting indie pop. Overall a favorable impression. 3/5.
Pretty bog standard indie with a few nice touches.
It sounds quite good, but it's fairly boring. 3/5
These guys really wish they wrote Rubber Soul
It's kind of shoe-gazey, but not bad. There's a couple songs that, strangely, kind of remind me of, like, 60s pop that I'm not a fan of, but overall it's a pretty decent album.
This isn't my type of music, and for the first two songs, I thought I was going to talk some shit about it here in my notes. As the album continues into the 3rd track and onward, it grew on me. I'm still not sure if I like it, but there is definitely something there that compels me to listen again. 3?
Nice album but it all felt a bit too washy for me.
Interesting, I suppose
Seemed almost like more like “trip hop” than Indie rock at times, I dig it! Nice find!
I listened to this on a long drive. Not sure if that was the best way to experience this album, but I felt like all the layered fuzziness and buried or echo-y vocals blended into the background noise and had a trance-inducing effect. There was an homage to late 50s/early 60s music running through the album, which I enjoyed.
Ok. Not bad.
Like many early 2010's DYI indie records, most of this album sounds as if the band didn't enjoy making it. But the tracks that actually have life are certainly worth listening to.
It’s fine. It’s sort of like if you asked for the most indie album possible. This would be the result.
Vaguely psychadelic, dreamy rock/pop - a bit like a softer version of the War on Drugs played at half-speed. I prefer the full speed version.
Bit elevatory but ok
I don't know what to say about this one. It's fine. I'm neither going to seek it out nor turn it off if it comes on.
I enjoyed the songs that picked up, the rest were a overly melancholic for my taste.
Atmospheric and I generally love the sound but none of the songs moves me. It is really mostly about the soundscape and I wouldn't play this for a proper listen, it's (good) background music for me. I like better find this a very hard album to score... on a good day I could give it a 4 and on a bad day a 2. A three then.
indie darlings? yes. Kinda snoozy? Also yes
Never heard this before. Didn't care much for the really slow songs, the rest of it was fine but not really noteworthy in my mind. I waver between giving it 2 or 3 stars, but feeling generous so i'll give it 3.
After reading some Global reviews on this site, I was worried - but I quite enjoyed several of the opening tunes. I am definitely going to go back and relisten to this one.
Had never heard of Deerhunter before. Found the album interesting...really enjoyed Helicopter. Will give some of their other albums a listen.
This album very much sounds like early 21st-century alt-rock. It's got a vibe to it that I don't love, but I could put it on for a sad birthday party, and it would be perfect. Production is good, just not really what I'm looking for in my musical rotation.
Another album where nothing stood out to me. A very low energy vibe. Nothing bad, but nothing I have any desire to come back to.
Truth be told, I didn't listen too intently to this one. Had it on at work. I dig the vibe though. Will likely give it a better listen again at some point.
A classic of my dorm room indie era that I always thought was quite pretty and never quite enjoyed.
Take beach house, make it a little lo-fi and more interesting, and you got Halcyon Digest. A lot a like here but it also melds together. Desire Lines and Fountain Stairs are standouts.
I've never heard of deerhunter before, I like them, new exposure, a raw folk rock sound, a little thin and tinny sounding, by design I suspect.
I liked this. It borders on my dream pop addiction, but is less dreamy than poppy. This is something I would really get into if it popped up on the radio, but it won't find it's way onto my playlists. Still, a very enjoyable modern album.
As someone who liked Deerhunter's early stuff, this was a hard sell at the time. I do like Desire Lines, Helicopter and Coronado.
3.5 I like some of these songs
pretty good. i think i would have liked it better if i was an 18 year old girl who collected rocks and fucked 40 year old men
- He Would Have Laughed hat mich dann am Ende dann doch echt nochmal überrascht 3,25/5
- sehr entspannt und cooler Kram dabei, aber nichts, was extrem herausgestochen ist 3/5
3.75
Pleasant but a bit boring. Cohesive sound but not very excitig for me. 3
Hmm, I don't see why this recording was on the list of 1001 to hear before I die. It is nice enough, it is not bad and actually pleasant. Not much variation from song to song. Perhaps on another day I might have seen more in this album as I liked the general "sound", but again, not enough to rave about it.
I imagine when the band made this they thought they really nailed it. I can almost picture them high-fiving each other every day when leaving the studio. Then they’d each have a nice dinner before hitting the hay.
I kept thinking I'd heard these guys before but I feel like I'm confusing them more than a little with Grizzly Bear (another band I can't tell if I like or not). Roundabout way of saying I'm a bit confused by this album. At times it's quite lovely and there's not much I can point to that makes me scream 'I don't like this' ("Basement Scene" kind of sucks though - this is the kind of lofi 21st century rock I really can't go for. no can do.) ... but there are no tracks that make me excited. That's a polite way of saying it approaches boring. On the other hand - after giving it 2 tries I think it's apparent that this isn't a mixtape album or band, it really is its own unit as an album. More of a feel/vibe than killer songs. Nothing wrong with that although it does lose immediate impact. Although...extra points for the final song "He Would Have Laughed" - a little too long for its own good but it's a nice album closer that probably bumped my rating up to a 3... 5/10 3 stars. (longest/most boring review I've written for me to essentially just say it's fine.)
Ya know what? It was okay. Pri-tay good even. I was skeptical after the first song but there was some cool chit later on the record.
This album certainly is from 2010. Big Tame Impala and My Morning Jacket energy. Wasn’t my favorite.
Meh, not bad but nothing standing out either.
The first song of this album SUCKS hahaha. I actually listened to it 5 days ago, and immediately turned it off because I wasn’t in the mood for such a snooze of an album. As such, the middle chunk of this album really surprised me. It was pure indie goodness. I’m really surprised I hadn’t heard some of the middle tracks before, but then again, it came out a few years before my time. If I were just rating the middle portion, this would be a 4.5 album — pushing 5 even: But the end is as much for a drag as the beginning, and for that reason, it’s just a 3.
3.1/5 listened 2x.
Decent US indie rock.
Some parts were a bit boring. Other parts were really lovely. That evens out to about average.
I liked this, but not enough to really want to hear it again. 3/5
Enjoyed most of this
Some decent songs but some are soooooo boring, may be my aversion to most "indie" music but the instrumentation plus a rather dull vocalist (imo) leads to most tracks being instantly forgettable to me. There are a few songs that I would most likely enjoy in certain situations, but I don't think I would seek most of these out. Favorite songs: desire lines, coronado
This surprised me a little. How have I never heard this before? Really pretty good. Deserves a revisit. Strangely high chance I won't bother
Pleasant. Desire Lines was my fave track.
Might grow on me
needs more flavour.
Reasonable. Better than what I thought, based on the album cover.
Nice.
A bit eerie and creepy, actually. But I can see their appeal
I'm biased toward this period/genre of music but this album is kinda bland and boring. Some songs are ok, 2.5 rounded up to 3*. Highlights: memory boy, he would have laughed
Hmm, this was more boring than I remember it being... "Memory Boy" still stands out as an effervescent little tune though. "Fountain Stairs" is nice too. And the sax on "Coronado". OK fine.
pretty cool. kinda elliot smithy and arcade fire-y at times
The start of new sad boy. I wanted more diversity from the songs though
Not heard of the band. Pretty varied. Generally middling.
I thought this was interesting, it kind of grew on me a bit after the second listen. That said, I didn't find it compelling, memorable, unique... it got multiple listenings more out of laziness than anything else, as I had it on loop and wasn't paying attention.
Ok almost really enjoyed but have now forgotten
Enjoyable but not particularly memorable and I doubt I'll hunt it out again. Someone's jam, no doubt, just not mine.
Yet another band I'd never heard of, and probably wont hear about ever again. The album was alright, some tracks felt a bit Arcade Fire-y, which was no bad thing.
It made me feel off and a little creepy.
So mid... Wish I could do half stars lol
Strong 3, a few standout songs that I enjoy already in the 2010 indy vibe
Different. OK. 3/5 starts
Trippy. In places. Some of the lo fi songs are a bit boring. I like the longer ones which build, like Earthquake and Desire Lines. I remember a huge fuss about this album when it came out, near the top of all the best in year lists, topping some. I didn't get around to listening to it until years later, and when I did I felt 'huh'. I mean there's some good stuff here for sure but it never hugely grabbed me like I was expecting. Also why does the last track just cut off? Still it's better than most of the offerings in what has been a largely poor week.
Me gustaron algunas pero no es el tipo de música que más me agrade.
Cool spacey indie rock that I slept on in 2010, glad I'm catching up with it now. Love their liberal usage of reverb, spring echo, and delay. Some very Animal Collective-production moments here which I'm not mad at. Gonna work this into the rotation more.
Listened 3/6/24. Half of this album was great, the other half just didn’t click with me. Lots of talent, great production. I may revisit this one at some point.
Average
Nice sound. Sometimes felt a teach was going to a different level only for it to return. Helicopter is a prime example.
Pretty average
Critics literally fell over each other to over praise this little band and I have never understood the appeal. Apparently I liked the song "Revival" at one point in my life. Either that or I accidentally clicked on "like" in Spotify.
It's rather gentle but won't leave a lasting impression
Just indie af 3/5
Man I was excited during the first track. But after that it was just basic 2010s indie
Some songs I didn't care for & some I really liked. 3 stars for now.
Stuck in my brain zero percent!
it was ok, nice melodies, a bit dull at times
Perfectly fine Indie Rock with a decent blend of bright and dark—melodies and sometimes lo-fi guitars complement each other. Deerhunter definitely has a sound that fits its era, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
I honestly didn’t really get this album. The Wikipedia article says it got “universal acclaim.” I don’t really understand why. This is another of those albums, like “Bitte Orca” before it in this project, that at times feels too smart for its own good to where it comes off as pretentious. Just take the name and album cover. “Halcyon Digest”? What? And a black and white photo of a praying bust wearing a wig. Please. The whole thing felt like a setup for something critics would love to devour. The music is fine. Sometimes it’s good, but never great. Sometimes it’s downright boring (“Desire Lines” repeats the same chord progression adding almost nothing interesting for the final two minutes of the track). It’s almost always understated. Maybe there’s brilliance here but I can’t see it. I do not get it. Someone please explain it to me. I didn’t dislike this album, I just think “universal acclaim” doesn’t really make sense and I’m either missing something or am smarter than everyone else. And I’m too modest to believe it’s the latter. 3 stars. Standout tracks: Memory Boy, Coronado
Lyssnade mest i bakgrunden. Lät som helt okej surfindie musik typ. Inget speciellt men inte dåligt
Ok
I don't know about this one, I feel like I didn't retain anything I listened to for the entirety of this album, even the stuff I liked, and that leaves me with this awkward feeling where it feels like I can't really give the album a fair shake if I hardly have anything to talk about, but I highly doubt another listen or two will change my utter lack of views I had on this album. I liked when it stopped being so lethargic, as it didn't feel ethereal enough to live up to the dream pop style, nor noisy to be a solid shoegaze record. That all being said, I think I enjoyed listening to it? It wasn't boring, and I was generally pretty alright with the music playing. It feels like the perfect record to enjoy in the background of something else, or a nice car ride with another person, but I hardly find this essential. Just a decent time.
Interesting. Not my typical music ...but I am impressed with their range
My first time listening to this group and I was pleasantly surprised
Definitely has an interesting vibe to it, similar vibe from some Radiohead tracks. 6/10
Not terrible but I didn't really like it
muy progresivo pero un poketo de ritmo li aniria be, ta aceptable pero bajonero pa hui en verda. La caratula es top tier. Pueden ir progresando a tomar por c**
I could listen to this over and over again.
Nice album. Very pleasant listen. It came and went nicely but never really struck a chord. Very easily faded into the background 2.5
The first song gave me a bad impression, but I think if I was high it might have been my favorite. They eventually settled into a nice chill vibe which I’m all about. Lots of simple repetitive guitar riffs which are easy to catch onto. At the same time, nothing really stood out to me as amazing.
Much more easy to listen to than Tom Waits. I didn’t feel anything groundbreaking from the album, but it was noticeably more fun to listen to in the car as opposed to just on my phone. I also felt as if the album ramped up throughout, which was nice.
There’s a heavy throwback of 50s and 60s pop throughout the album. That mixed with what seems to be an influence of maybe Coldplay or Snow Patrol makes for a very low key sound that’s really enjoyable. Could definitely see some of the songs being played in the background at get togethers. The three most listened to songs from this album are the peaks of the album but there are some lows here and there. I’ll definitely listen to this one again and check out more of Deerhunter’s stuff.
It was fine? Just kind of uninteresting to me, but not bad.
great music for listening to alone and thinking that it's getting too dark too early and winter is way closer than you realize. this was the album that the teacher who was grooming my friends in high school was using to bond over their mature and worldly taste
it's ~fine~

It isn't special by any means
Prima album maar niks bijzonders
Good start to my journey of untapped albums.
60s throwback whimsical indie rock with a lot of fuzzy chorus-ed out guitar parts. Dreamy power pop psych sounds with busy arrangements and major harmonies mixed with Lo-fi shambly vocals drenched in reverb. Some pretty guitar leads with clean warbly delay tone - prolonged into textural playing like at the end of desire lines. Slows way down sometimes into something with jazzier chords and clean guitar tones and very little in terms of rhythm section for a very bedroom feel - these tracks are kind of boring. Too many animal bands from this era, they all get blurred together. Favorites: memory boy, helicopter
I enjoyed most of this.
Well produced if a little bit of a downer in places. Made me nostalgic for the early 10s.
Dreary alt country and Lo fi jangle
Good, they have some worthy originals on this album
Not bad, but nothing special.
It's a decent album, but super slow in the first half. I hate that the album art doesn't match the album at all
Pretty unique album. A good amount of saves in there for sure. Desire Lines was pog
Gives kinda offsetting vibes
Decent. Not great not bad. Chill music
A lot of interesting sounds but nothing really grabbed me.
Listened to this while playing Lost Ruins of Arnak solo. I lost. This is the second album that I know quite well on this list. I used to love this album when it came out...but it kinda fell a bit flat after 13 years. I really wanted to give it a 4...but it didn't feel like it was still there for me. It still is a good album, but not one that I'd come back to more often.
Quite decent but not my vibes.
Solid indie rock album. Nothing really stood out to me. 3
Quite good, and totally new to me
Chill indie.
This is like pure distilled 200 proof indie alt rock. Which isnt a bad thing. It does come off as shoegaze-y and a little contrived sometimes though. 3/5
Each song sounds ethereal and dreamy. Having heard this album, I long for distortion.
wasn't really paying attention but it was still nice
I generally like Deerhunter - this album was pretty solid. I'm not sure if it belongs on this list though, I feel like they are a band that hugely benefitted from the music-blog cultural influence of the 2000's and 2010's I know this was praised as one of the best albums of 2010, but one of my main criticisms of this list is that maybe some years just don't produce amazing, must listen albums.
liked it. Weird cover choice
I enjoyed this album quite a bit .. but .. it was odd. Non-of the songs i thought were good enough to add to my "1000 Albums" playlist.
A bit like if drowning in a swamp was a pleasant experience. Too samey to be anything more than fine.
3+
Best Song: Helicopter. I liked the loopy reverb when paired with the dreamy vocals. Worst Song: Revival. This just sounds like any other indie rock band of the time. The band's strength is in its more muted, leaned-back outputs. Overall: An album so sleepy I kept forgetting I was listening to it. Not bad, but an album to played only at the end of a long day.
Richly atmospheric and melodic, with carefully deployed uses of distortion and noise that give the sound a lot depth. I don't have a lot of interest in Indie bands, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. Fave Songs: Memory Boy, Don't Cry, Desire Lines, He Would Have Laughed, Revival, Sailing
I'd seen this bandied around for a while and finally had my chance to check it out. I was disappointed. It's not at all what I thought- just an average inde group, well produced and unoffensive but a bit nothingy really.
Unusual but it was oddly relaxing to listen to. Very soft in delivery, with nice melodic touches.
Not sure why this is on the list as it is pretty much the most standard and average indie rock album that you could create
Cool
meh
Pop tranquilo, con voz suave y algo susurrante. Totalmente desconocidos. De la hornada de grupos americanos de este estilo. Se puede escuchar en cualquier ambiente.
The first song seems like an anomaly for the album. I've never even heard of Deerhunter, even though this was released relatively recently. Not too bad.
Completely fine. Seems like a soft, polite Arcade Fire. A little experimental and ethereal at times, but not so much so that it disengages the listener. Desire Lines and Don't Cry were the strongest tracks for me. A lot of other items kind of blended together through a couple of listens.
Fine
Very chill vibe
Never heard of this or the band, but the 00s are a blind spot for me in general. Does sound a bit like Vampire Weekend maybe in places, proving they aren’t a total blank. This is OK, but all a bit meh. In places there’s promise but they never really seem to get going properly and nothing properly catchy ever really makes an appearance. It’s not dreadful but I doubt I’ll listen again.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Helicopter (8) 2 - He Would Have Laughed (11) 3 - Desire Lines (6)
Never heard of this group. The album grew on me after a few listens, the track 'Revival' in particular.
This belongs to the "whole lot of guitars and whining" genre coined by Summer from The O.C., and I'm ok with that. But there's not much that calls me back - there's prettiness, songs with many bits to them, that post-rock marker, and uncluttered sound where even the fuzz sounds clean - and I think, I suppose I could listen to this more. The song with the sax almost made me enthusiastic. All very tasteful, competent and tepid. 3.
Enjoyable.
A generous 3... quite boring but listenable in a lot of places, although a few good tunes to hold it up
Some good tunes. Love the sax. A little too much fuzz on the vocals and throughout.
This album was still in the 2018 edition of the book, but I can't find it in the 2021 edition.
Lo-fi indie. the sound is too fuzzy in some places, making it a bit boring. But I can see the hype.
A weird one. Some of it very ambient and chill some of it actually nice to vibe with. Very indie sound, but fun mostly Saved tracks: Revival, Basement Scene, Coronado
Atmospheric, kinda poppy
Very pleasant 3/5
This was very close to four stars; I certainly liked almost every song here. But too few of the songs really stood out or wowed me, gripped me or made me fall in love. It is almost there, and maybe would earn that next star on a few repeated listens, but for now I have to give it three.
Slow tunes, laid back. Only listened twice and didn’t fully get into it. May or May not be my jam, solid 3.
Quite enjoyable, though the start of the album had me thinking it was gunna be even better, still happy with this one
Pretty good but a little slow. Definitely a grower
Yeah. It’s 2000s Indy rock to a fault. At times hazy, ethereal, others it’s listener friendly, but forgettable. I wouldn’t mind revisiting it, but it likely wouldn’t occur to me.
I like this album but there’s nothing particularly exciting or interesting going on
Aparte - beetje zweverige - muziek, afgewisseld met leuke poppie nummers. Goed te luisteren. ***
generic slow/medium burn indie grunge-ish lounge music. some Candy Claws-esque synth ideas but I wish there was more
Never heard this group before, so their status as a must-listen intrigued me. Halcyon Digest by Deerhunter is a mellow album that is good on the background but not gripping or a 'must-listen'. As a matter of fact, Halcyon Digest is a generic sampling of the same generic indie music that the US has spewed out for the first 15 years of the century and if you were to play a sampling of this or any other Deerhunter album I'm sure an average music listener would spout off several Franz Ferdinandish-Modest Mousey bands before landing on Deerhunter. 3/5.
A few songs I liked we enough, but I listened to this album 3+ times and it just never made an impact on me
Not an amazing indie album but also not terrible
IDK, I guess it was ok. I've already forgotten what it sounded like though.
It's alright.
Chill
A fair few great tracks (ex. the opener and closer) and others that are alright if unremarkable.
Pretty boring. Probably deserves another listen. Most songs below average though. 2.5
Miten voi olla, että vaikka olen kuunnellut tän todella monta kertaa, vasta B-puoli alkaa kuulostaa tutulta? Vastaus: jää aina taustamusiikiksi. Desire Lines on kyllä piriste ja tosi hyvä
I enjoyed this; I need to listen to it again.
Overall pretty dark and no standout songs. Weird cover which set the tone for the music I was listening to. While I like Indie music, this just seemed to have a unsettling undertone which made it not so much my taste.
Very middle of the road, not good, not bad, just ok background music
I liked it. Not mindblown or anything, but that was good. Sounded like a 2010 album alright.
I have nothing to say about it.
I enjoyed this album. I liked the more up-tempo songs more than their slower songs, but some songs were just too long for me. There were a couple of times (Desire Lines & He Would Have Laughed) where I went, "Wait, this song's still playing?" But, the songs I did like, I liked a lot. 3/5 Favorite song: Helicopter Worst song: Basement Scene
Interesting Album with some good songs
Not listened before. I enjoyed it
Huske ingenting fra da
Not bad
i dont really care for it, a bit shoegazy alt pop not bad not outstanding either
I guess I’ve been missing out thus far.
Album woke up after two songs. I got nervous but it turned out to be a pretty solid album.
Surprisingly never heard this one - I like it - 3 stars
Overall - 5/10 Big tonal shifts and lack of consistency really killed this album for me, but in between all of that some really good instrumentals and great lyrics
Nice enough with a couple of songs I'd listen to again but all just a bit too twinkly and light to get better than 3.
Cool and atmospheric intro into some heavily inspired music reminiscent of the Strokes and occasionally Arcade fire. Overall enjoyable with nice range of tempo, cool beats over decent guitar/drum work. Not blown away by anything in particular but would listen again. 3.4 Earthquake cool edgy atmospheric start Don’t cry/revival: strokesy Sailing: cool dark and stormy Memory boy: zombies? Desire Lines: arcade fire drum intro Helicopter: more upbeat cool Fountain stairs: Coronado: very strokes
Pretty decent
Far away from a masterpiece but entertaining in its shoop-shoopy way of defining themselves as a retro-outfit but there are much better works by them. Still 3.4
It really is quite a good album, but that first song just starts it off on the wrong foot for me.
aight
A fine collection of moody indie rock tunes, though nothing mind blowing
