Reviews (page 6 of 7)
This album came out whilst I was transitioning from a top class English footballer to a run of the mill rent boy. It reminds me of those hedonistic afternoons spent plodding round the football pitch, still kidding myself that I could compete with the likes of Jamie Redknapp and Peter Ndlovu, then doing my make up and preparingmy bum for a poudning. Yes, the only place I could really compete with the likes of Redknapp was in the homes of eccentric millionaires, when we'd go round and suck their balls for pocket money. I wish I had the money the players earn now, but sadly for me it was 90 minutes of pain followed by a further 90 minutes of pain as I got bummed within an inch of my life by a grotesque, fat rich man. Of course Redknapp left that life behind, married a popstar and made obvious observations about Dele Alli on TV. I was not as fortunate. Oh to be young again.
I’m okay
sounds vvvv intense at first listen. Its got a lot of techno. may not make it through it. has a curious sort of vibing with my anxiety though
Interesting?
Generic techno.
This album was probably decent when it came out. Give me a couple hours and a laptop and I could probably make something similar today...
While the opening track resembles the sound of a man flushing a thousand toilets at once, I can appreciate the tight production and minimalist beats on the majority of this record. It's a shame the record as a whole has very little substance otherwise, 2/5.
Painfully uninteresting
I like 1990s techno and IDM. I like Warp Records. Somehow I never checked out this duo's music. I was pretty excited to find a new gem from this scene. Sadly, that's not what I got. Firstly, it's mostly downtempo with some ambient - so not quite what I thought (I have seen it referred to as a techno record in multiple places). But that's okay. More problematically, I find it completely half-baked. Lots of lovely sounds, but the tracks mostly feel like unfinished sketches. It's more than an hour and fifteen minutes long, and it just feels like a rough draft of ideas that needed more work. I really don't want all my mini-reviews to be "my favourite album is better than this favourite album", but let's put this in perspective. In 1994 alone, Autechre and µ-Ziq released their sophomore albums (but I assume both artists are represented elsewhere on the list, so we'll let that slide). Also in 1994: Robert Hood - Internal Empire (1994) / Plastikman - Musik (1994) / Alter Ego - Alter Ego (1994). Also in 1994, Atom™ released a DOZEN albums, and every one I've heard is more coherent than this one. There's so much to choose from, it just seems bizarre that this record made the cut.
Some decent moments but not my thing.
Barely above background computer game music.
Sort of soundtrack for movies style. Not my thing to listen to without images to pair with.
Pls more Dancehall less Halloween. Only one dancehall track. Lots of minimal spooky business. Not the sonic pallete I'm looking for unless happen to be exploring a tunnel underneath London, looking for reggae-techno-Slimer. C+
Was this the first dub/drum and bass album or something? Did it set the stage for acts like Left Field? Did it inspire the X Files intro? It mostly sounds like the score of a B-Movie set at a carnival. Weird sound effects and rhythm section. Not great, even the album cover is bad. There are some droning synth grooves near the end that aren’t bad. C-
Was this when they had first started to use a computer to make music? I thought at the time of release in 1994 maybe this album was really groundbreaking but I googled and it peaked at 57 in the uk album charts being beaten by albums including “the hit list” by cliff Richard, “Seal II” by Seal and “Alive in hell” by meatloaf.
ambient music, needs vocals

Not my cup of tea really
well ... it’s definitely different. it went from bad to okay to bad again. I wouldn’t choose to listen to this. best track = “Wilmot”
Old school, synthy electronic.
It was fine. I don't know. I liked a couple songs but it was boring. Would never listen again.
It was pretty good to work to but a little odd/ jarrring in places.
Vooral heel weird, opzich wel toffaar niet voor vaked

“Haunted Dancehall” - oh, really? To me, that sounds more like perfectly ordinary dancehall without any distinctive features or highlights. Or was that perhaps exactly what they meant by “haunted”? Hmm, let’s try to figure this out: “The Sabres of Paradise” clearly refers to the razor on the cover - so “Dancehall” here probably refers to the barbershop, which is also paradise. OK, and it’s haunted - by boring electronic music? Or is that a metaphor for the (presumably dull) knife - or rather, its improper use? And what’s the deal with that disturbingly precise claim that this is the 47th best album of 1994? I mean, how many relevant albums were released in 1994? Were there more than 47? Maybe even fewer? So many questions - depending on the context, either oral sex should follow now or a cut to a very serious-looking man behind a desk talking about something completely different... I can’t take this anymore.
I could play this in my backyard... actually, I think I already played this in my backyard when I was a kid :-(
Another useless album that only people that enjoy electronic albums should listen to. Also no reason for this to be over a hour! 0.5/5
did not like it
I genuinely dont know what to make of it.
...Ugh. Why did I sign up for this project again? To expose my ears to brash, echoey percussion that persists relentlessly until said ears have fallen decrepit, been violently laid to waste, been left abandoned in a dank dilapidated sewage tunnel? That's certainly what this album feels like. The best part of the album was when I accidentally caused Mardy Bum (Arctic Monkeys) to start playing on Spotify alongside Bubble and Slide II on YouTube, and immediately thought, "wow, this part of Bubble and Slide sounds kind of decent." Not available on Spotify – which isn't the be-all-end-all of poor music, but there must be a strong correlation. I assume any Sabres Of Paradise fans would flock to the YouTube version, but that only has 12,000 views. I can definitely understand why this record was given the prestigious accolade "47th best album of 1994". Duke of Earlsfield... You can't tell me with a straight face that that repeated percussion on beat 4 is genuinely strong. Genuinely bullshit, more like. A callback to the 80s when nobody was looking for it. The whole album is a bit like that. Many of these songs lack texturing, and very often we only get one or two instruments/textures to pay attention to. Because we also lack vocals for the most part, the go-to reaction is to do more interesting things like tune into an Achievement Hunter reunion stream, or launch the Flow Free app, or review a paper on temporal relativity. All of these are things I did while listening to Haunted Dancehall, and all of them enhanced the listening experience. The track Tow Truck is a little bit better in terms of ratcheting up the musical complexity. Those alarm-like synths are admittedly pretty cool, and the drumming gets slightly interesting. The track Theme is pretty decent too, I guess – if only because it sounds like the right ear of the stereo mix of some James Bond theme. Shoutout to Ballad of Nicky McGuire, too, for having a cool melody on the synth. Chapel Street Market 9am is surprisingly good at the beginning but then goes absolutely nowhere for 7 minutes. One big positive is that the music genuinely enhances the overall experience of watching a R.E.P.O. gaming stream. But by itself? It just ain't enjoyable, man! 1/5 Key tracks: I Wanna Be Yours
Ummm…no
I had to stop listening.. that was annoying wtf is this
1.4/5
Nope.
Pretty forgettable electronic music, I thought the first couple were actively boring, the middle was fine, and the end was too long. Wilmot is the best here by a mile, but I'm done with this one, and will probably forget about them tomorrow.
Doesn't really say anything of value, interest, or meaning, and isn't enjoyable to listen to while it pretends to do so.
If only I could give minus points. How the feck did this album make it to this list? Apparently whoever curated this list is a fun of leaky pipes in a basement? Who listens to this for fun? You surely can’t listen to this to feel anything as it is devoid of any striking remarkable characteristics. At 1 hour 17 minutes and having to listen to this pile of mouldy rags on YouTube because (understandably) this shit isn’t on Spotify, there was not one second that I thought, ah, now it’s gotten interesting. NOT ONE DAMN SECOND. I’m not surprised that I’m only like the 500th listener of some of these songs according to the YouTube views. The other 499 are probably people on this list who have also been forced to succumb to a bizarre listening experience. That, or our beloved curator really loves listening to leaky pipes and has done so hundreds of times. Leave this in the abyss, never to be found again.

*Haunted Dancehall* Wow this as a whole was absolute torture. Not saying all of it was bad... I liked "Tow Truck" which has a demented James Bond score feel. But even that overstays it's welcome. Best I can say about this is it sounds like podsafe music for a horror, mystery, or real crime podcast. But since this isn't Podsafe... This is pretty useless. A very very long album of uselessness. (0.95) ⊘
Lacking in melodicism and energy. Boring!!! 1 star
I'm gonna go with a cool 1.5 stars for this. I thought it might be way lower after the first couple tracks, but "Tow Truck" and "Theme" were alright and saved it.
I cant listen it
Couldn't find it, so no listen.
i str8 up cant lisn 2 this 1, evry single track is unavailable. ok so 2 days l8r i searched it up on yt, lisn 4 like a min a few dif songs, wth
I didn't can listen the album, I don't know the cause, but not worked via spotify, appear the error "This content not available".
slcuhalam fragmentamk tylko nie bylo asluchane ale czulam ske jakbym sluchalq jakis sprezyn i garnkow
This reminds me of music that you'd hear in the lobby of a hotel that's trying to be trendy. Because this album wasn't available on Spotify, I had to listen to it on YouTube. Funnily enough, when ads came on I could not distinguish between the music and the ads and the music of the album! Very boring
Wilmot
This kind of noise will turn any dancehall into a ghost town. Too much nonsense.
The first song reminds me of music to make you poop
No thanks.
lowk hard to listen to for me 😭
Ass
Just some glirps glorps and all that bullshit
The tracks for this are not available on Spotify lmao. So I went to YouTube and listened to the first song and…absolutely not. Cannot believe this is on this list
Kul att typ lyssna på, förstår Primal Screams elektroniska vägval och samplingar när man hoppas ner i deras värld. Bra? Rakt igenom hemskt album.
”NME named Haunted Dancehall the 47th best album of 1994”.
This was pretty dull. There’s got to be better choices than this
it is haunted indeed
Not on Spotify
Electronic dance music that did not succeed in making me want to dance.
Who even added this into the list

Sounds like a 5 year old playing with garage band
Don’t know what to say…sounds like background music of a low budget movie.
This was an electronic album. For me, that typically means overlong songs that usually have ~30 good seconds stretched out beyond comprehension in unenjoyable ways, and overlong albums that never seem to end. This album had both of those things in spades! It sounded a lot thinner musically than other electronic, so this was ultimately a below-average entry in a genre I do not like.
I can’t with this. Spooky techno with bad samples and worse loops.
Nah
Very monotonous
567/1001 🌕🌑🌑🌑🌑
The band the album cover and the album title give me low expectations. With that being said it looks like it’s electronic as opposed to “alt/indie” which is the vibes I got from the title and band. 5 seconds in and I hate it. Not made for headphones. Hurts my head. Will not be finishing if this is what it’s like all the way through. Sounds like a bad movie score. II is better because there’s at least some type of rythm. Still sucks tho. I made these beats on imusic by accident. 7 minute song with no lyrics is insane. Duke is a lot better (not). More of the same. Bulshit sounds. Don’t really work. Who published this. And then who agreed to waste even more money on a remaster. Beat that starts in the middle of flight bath I actually like. The original beat that plays throughout ruins it tho. Drum beat on planet d is cool. Everything else is unnecessary and waters it down. Beginning of Wilmot is unique in the sense that they used new instruments/slunds. But it’s more uncohesive bullshit. Back half is the same as every other song. Bass line is pretty good I will say. Can’t believe how long these songs are considering it’s the same riff over and over and over and over again. Every good element on any of these songs last for a bit then they go back to the dumbness. I like the guitar riff a lot on tow truck. I hate what’s in the background. Last minute and a half is cool. Theme is another movie score. It’s not bad but it’s the same thing where it’s one riff constantly repeating. Guitar is good. I have a meeting in 2 mins with 5 songs to go. I don’t think I’ll be picking it back up when I’m out of my meeting. This is up their for worst I’ve heard so far from this list. Especially when comparing the the electronic album I got LY that was only a few years older that I thought was wayyyyy better. Don’t waste your time. .5 stars for tryin.
Schrottplatz - next level!
Crap BDS band with no songs on Spotify. Therefore, unheard 1/5.
bruh what the hell bruh It’s like you keep waiting for something interesting to happen. Didn’t finish
no me deja escucharlo lol
It's so bad it's not even on Spotify. It's just a bunch of sounds that go on for 1 hour and 16 minutes. Wasted spot on this list. 1 / 10
every time one of these electronic albums pops up I do my best to come in open minded and tell myself that it's possible I'll actually quite enjoy it and every time... I don't. I tried, I swear but other then a few occasions I don't get it. 2/10
Completely shitty listening experience. The soundscapes sound unfinished, haphazard, hollow, and murky. So little care seems to have been taken to distribute the repetition effectively which results in each song getting mind-numbingly grating by minute 2.
0.5 - this was not good. Normally, even if it’s an album I don’t like, I can understand why someone would listen to it. This album is a mystery to me as to why anyone would decide to put this on
This comes across as someone that had a big idea to experiment with computer music, but didn't really have musical intent to put something together that was actually enjoyable or interesting. It relies heavily on futuristic computer effects to carry the load. In 2026 it's just not that interesting. The result is pretty boring and really hard to engage with.
Believe me when I say that the majority of this album sounds like if a not-at-all musically-inclined space alien were forced to make songs using only the components of its broken spaceship. It does not contain any of the atmospheric complexity you might expect in an ambient electronica album, nor does it pulse with any of the energizing rhythms of a typical 90s dancehall album. The easiest way I can describe most of the songs is a low quality imitation of a Depeche Mode beat, although some songs lack even the fundamentals of what I'd even consider to make a "beat". I'm not sure what the producers of this record were attempting to accomplish with this strange assemblage of dissonant foolishness, but I do not like it. I think that perhaps they forgot to make music and instead attempted to make a compilation of cheap sci-fi sound effects. I would implore anyone to not waste their time listening to this.
track 1 sounds like they took samples from a toilet lol
This is what happens when you have a group of men who have never once in their lives been told “no” before. Someone should have put a stop to this.
Feels like if I was tripping hard the music here would no doubt take me on some crazy journey. However at the time of listening to this I'm not tripping (sadly) therefore it's a 1. Lifeless repetition which when listened to in the context of "listening to music" not just background noise, just doesn't tick any boxes for songwriting, song progression, or hooks.
Boring and dragged on and on. Bubble and Slide II beat was weirdly and coincidentally nostalgic since I used to beatbox that exact beat as a child, despite never having heard this record until now
Weak
Not for me. Liked some stuff on Wilmot and Tow Truck but all of the songs could be half the length they are. 1.5/5
so not for me.
We need to stop calling electronica, music. I can't even say is was decent background noise. I have a feeling that when I die and end up in Hell, electronica stuff will be played on a constant loop. Maybe this is a sign and I should start to embrace some sort of religion? What would Prince do?
1.5 Historically, I haven’t given ambient electronic music good scores (or really any ambient stuff for that matter), and this is no different. In fact, I think this was one of the worst instances I’ve heard on this list so far. The word “grating” feels a bit strong, but the amount of siren-like noises on this was too damn high - your album is not likely to put me in a good mood if I have to constantly lean over to turn it down. Outside of that, there are some moments of mild enjoyability, but for the most part, this thing was incredibly one-note and uninteresting, despite the sort of “spooky, scary skeletons” ambience they were clearly going for here. I don’t like to throw around the phrase “every song sounded the same” lightly, as I think it often comes from a place of willful ignorance, but this genuinely sounds more or less like the same song on a loop over and over for an already above-average length album. While there’s a hint of Kraftwerk influence to be found that I had an ounce of appreciation for, this feels more like a diminished, diluted version of their sound, with much worse production - despite being around 20 years newer than most of their work. Well, maybe reading the Wiki will help add to my appr- wtf this was hailed as the first concept album in techno? Just because it sounds like something that could be heard at a theoretical haunted dancehall? I feel like we’re stretching the term here, but okay. If there’s supposed to be some sort of arc here, it certainly missed me. Maybe they just assumed the dancehall was haunted because everybody abruptly got tf outta there after having to listen to this.
The first song sounded like a toilet flushing fed through a robotic voice filter. The rest wasn’t much better.
Could not listen to this without taking drugs and having disco lighting. Please make it stop.
not my typa
I waited 80 mins fot for 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 and it never came.
Perhaps the best yet of the albums I don’t like. Very solid 1.
It was crap! Just a noise that as the album went on it got more and more on my nerves
Sadly not on Spotify where I am. Labeled as techno, but I'm not sure I agree. But that term has changed meaning over the years, so fine. The start of the album is quite horrible to be frank, with 'Bubble and Slide' being harsh and dissonant. Most tracks felt more ambient and less musical than what I'd like an album to be as well. It's definitely an experimental album, and reminds me a bit of Selected Ambient Works by Aphex Twin. Only this doesn't quite have that musical quality to it that he has. The songs felt a bit all over the place in general, with some sounding like electronic and industrial salsa/samba ('Wilmot', 'Tow Truck'). Then we had 'Theme' and 'Ballad of Nicky McGuire' which sounded like songs fit for a soundtrack. And some darker more mellow songs like 'Planed D (Portishead Remix)' and 'Theme 4'. It was hard to get a cohesive picture of what the album was, apart from dissonant and atonal. In the end this wasn't for me at all. It lacked musical elements to make it joyful to listen to. It was just a bit too weird. Strong 1.
Did not have a playlist on Spotify
couldnt listen to it bc it wasnt on spotify
Too tricky to listen too
no
Not my jam
Seriously? How many fucking horrible, lackluster albums are we going to have to be subjected to during this project? Nothing here but down tempo techno, "Tow Truck" and "Theme" were catchy at least. Otherwise, horrible dreck that I'm not ever going to listen to again.
Hab Probleme gehabt das ganze Album zu finden aber was ich gehört hab war mid. Maybe war des revolutionär für die Techno scene
Just dreadful. The faceless, by-the-numbers techno on this record is devoid of any real substance. (Or you may need to be on substances to enjoy it.)
Yikes. A struggle to listen to. At least there were some beats… Any of the tracks over 90s were too long by however many seconds over 90s they were.
No thank you
This album is not good. Half the tracks meander for a lifespan doing little-to-nothing and I died like ten times listening to this, and then I don't know if this is because I had to listen on YouTube but the wavy cutting pad on the last track felt like live ear surgery (possibly the easiest access to my brain so they could resurrect me) It got sorta fun but my conscience won't let me push it over a 1/5
A little too simple, repetitive and discordant in places for my liking.
1 I love Electronica and really enjoyed this when this album ENDED.
apparently doesn’t exist anymore 🤷🏻♀️
Really?
The Daily Double! Boring and disgusting. Synthesized garbage.
Best Track - "Wilmot"
Buns with a side of ass
Started but could not finish. To me it was just a collection of experimental sounds than music
No thanks! Trance nonsense, super annoying listen to be honest. “Best” Track: Jacob Street 7am
garbage
Ugh this was not good and I could not wait for this to end. Wayyyyy too long. Actual rating...1.5. Liked Songs: "Duke of Earlsfield" , "Wilmot" , "Tow Truck" , "Jacob Street 7am" , "Haunted Dancehall"
Stupid and dumb 1
Album #15 The Sabres of Paradise: Haunted Dancehall Honestly, the name and cover of the album seemed intriguing, along with the fact that it was an obscure 90s album I’d never heard of, I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised. But the album is just not for me, I don’t ever really put on music just to zone out, and I can’t imagine ever actively listening to over an hour of repetitive, sonically uninteresting noises. There were a few parts near the end that I started to enjoy, but for the most part, I just couldn’t even stay focused on the music. I don’t know much about IDM, but I’d be pretty disappointed if this is the pinnacle of the genre. Best Tracks: Chapel Street Market 9 am, Haunted Dancehall, Wilmot Worst Track: Bubble and Slide (sounded like a wet fart) Score out of 10: 3.5
I absolutely hate this. This is just grating noises set to a beat. It sucks.
Bara konstigt. Kunde inte lyssna klart. Etta
The strangest, most uncomfortable combination of sounds I've heard in a long time... it wasn't even playable on Spotify, and now that I know what this is, I think I can see why......
Another day, another boring 1h+ long electronica record
wtf is ts
Too minimalist and groove-devoid for me. Way better towards the end than the beginning, but at no point did I feel like I was listening to music…
Actually fuck this. Too long. Too repetitive. Annoying. There's definitely better electronica on this list, especially representing this particular brand of it. Started skipping through parts of songs near the end because it just wouldn't end. Sounded like noises made from a Casio keyboard and AOL dial up sounds. Total slog.
this list is making it harder to listen to electronic music without dismissing it at first glance that is the haunting, of the dancehall in my heart music: hated. (⌐■_■)
If someone invited me to a haunted dancehall I would be so excited. If I showed up and this is what was playing I would feel betrayed.
Holy shit this was bad. I hated almost every track on here. There was 1 song that was sort of ok. Tow Truck didn't totally suck.
Not available on spotify
When will this end
An album of noise. And not the kind you want to hear.
This is an atrocity
⭐️ i'd give it half a star if i could. i'll say it as many times as i have to, even though the author will never read this: STOP adding slop albums to the list just because they're british!!! is the bar for decent music really so low across the pond? either the author of this list has some questionable taste in music or his bri'ish bias is so strong that he added some nothing-ass albums to the list out of pride. plenty of great music from the UK, anyone can agree, but this ain't it
Huh. I like ambient but this was just dull dredge. Simultaneously boring and painful to endure. Now that I’ve heard it before I die, I will endeavor to do good works, hopefully avoiding being tortured by this album in the afterlife. Haunted Dancehall approaches the horror of a Kid Rock album. Don’t worry Kid, you are still at the bottom of the list, but The Sabres of Paradise are right there in your rear view mirror.
Simply very boring. Dance music not meant for anything else than dancing.
No idea what I just listened to but okay.
This sucks, might actually be 1 star
ummmm i don’t really know how i feel about this one… 1 star feels a bit low because there were moments on here that i liked, but i ended up having to skip a few songs towards the end because i just couldn’t get through them. 1.5
It was very weird and I am not sure why it was recommended for a listen. Definitely a once and done for me.
WTF. How many of these noisy pieces of “art” are on the list? This one doesn’t provide value in any way I can identify.
The first song sounds like a toilet. That's all you need to know.
If I was a ghost in this dancehall I'd be fucking pissed.
un ascolto difficile che infatti ho appeso dopo poco
Veramente difficile da ascoltare. Non fa proprio per me e non capisco come possa rientrare nei 1001 album ds sentire almeno una volta nella vita
What the hell was that?!?!
Plinky plonk noises
I don’t have the energy to give an in depth review of this album. It was weird, hard to listen to and the worst sin of all, it was boring.
Nei.
DNF, fuck off Best Song: N/A Rating: 1/10 Stars: 1
17th from bottom on 1001 global stat list.
Not too sure if it's because of the amount of long albums I've been getting recently or if just this albums fault, but does this seriously need 76 minutes worth of songs - when most songs are heavily repetitive - to convey its emotion. It just repeats ad nauseam, like goodness gracious me! I'm not sure what is with some electronic musicians and 80 minutes albums with the same few bars, going over and over. And I don't even reckon you could dance to a lot these songs; as some electronic music gets the point across better in a live setting rather than the studio. The only track that amounted to anything is Tow Truck. Which has this menacing surf-like riff in it. Bubble and Slide sounds like they played the song in a toilet bowl and sounds like someone is pissing, like genuinely what were they trying with that song? 0.01/5.00 song, absolutely god awful.
Can't find this online anymore
Not sure why this album is in this list.
This was terrible. Worse than jazz. It was over an hour of electronic torture.
Please no more of this.
I'm 600 albums in now, I fel qualified to say this list has no idea what it's talking about when it comes to picking electronic music. Aphex Twin, Burial, and Daft Punk (though, not Discovery) are on here only because it's idiot-proof to omit those. I try to hard to fly the flag for electronic music on this list, then my hand is forced to review this, or that wildly-out-of-nowhere Les Rythymes Digitales album, with honesty. I could spend some time tearing this album apart in the context of it's inclusion on this list. I will instead list a handful of electronic albums that should be on this list, mostly from the onset of EDM hitting big in the states, as this list basically overlooks that entire musical phenomena: Damage Control - Mat Zo Clarity - Zedd Random Album Title - deadmau5 Nurture - Porter Robinson If It Were You, We'd Never Leave - Andrew Bayer Welcome Reality - Nero True - Avicii Immunity - Jon Hopkins The Ineffible Truth - G Jones
DNF, just couldn’t do it.
Nothing really happened
Pff
I don’t get it.
Ugh
not for me

Some of these tracks would be cool background to a gathering or behind poetry, but as a stand alone album, it doesn’t feel worthy of a straight listen, let alone an inclusion on this list. But I would have given two stars until the second to last track came on and was just absolutely grating. 2/10
The thing with this type of experimental music is that any twat can make it. I should know, I've done it myself. It takes zero talent, zero ability, zero creativity. I'll concede that there's effort involved on the production side of things, but to take something like this and make it interesting, make it worthwhile, make it anything more than a bit of a joke for the person making it - that's the tricky part. This fails in that regard, in most regards, utterly.
Wow, This one befuddles me. As much as I disliked Missy Elliot's Under Construction, I at least could understand why it was part of this collection. You cannot convince me, however, that this has ever been viewed as good. I was probably looking forward to the end of this album roughly a third of the way in, and I don't think I'll ever listen to anything from it ever again. I don't think I've ever been as tempted to say "it's just noise" about an album as I have been here.
Before I die? Really?
I’m sorry but I cannot
Discount bin dancehall
Well it wasn’t good but it didn’t make me want to pierce my eardrums so that’s something
Meh, not very good
No no no no made it through 2 songs - far too much.
The oversaturated electronic music of today may have desensitized my ears but this is boring as shit. There's not a single banger on the album, there's no rise, no fall; it just is. I was hoping the Portishead remix would save me but alas you can't remix nothing.
A hard listen. Nothing "bad" per se, but every song felt like it was just one idea - and even then it might not be all that different to the others. There is far better electronic music out there, and I really hope to find some on this list.
Some things you just can’t unhear
1.5 - Bad
?? ———————————— My non-musician scoring system. 5 - Love it. Would play anytime, buy, see live… 4 - Good music. 3 - Average playlist. Depends on time and setting. 2 - I can’t listen to whole songs…skipped all of them 1 - No.
First thought was that I could be covering period 3 music lesson.....there are some people from 1994 who had there yr7 music projects stolen
The best thing about this album is that I've finished listening to it and I don't have to listen to it again
This one sucked!
Esto no es para mí. No perdí 1 hora y 20 de mi vofa
Like, this shit is DEVOID of substance, bro First album I’ve encountered where I genuinely can’t understand why ANYONE would believe it belongs on this list. I don’t even know if I can say that I hated it because it wasn’t even interesting enough to hate. But I definitely can say that every tedious second all of these dull repetitive thudding/scraping/gurgling/beeping sounds played for was a second I spent being keenly aware that I was never going to get to have that time back to spend on listening to music that feels like it might actually speak to someone’s human emotional experience. Not a pleasant way to spend an hour and seventeen minutes (!!!) of my afternoon. One star experience, in fact. Sorry
Utter dross
This album is about as vanilla as it gets. Electronica without soul. Music from the Hearts of Space stuff. Pleasant, but lacking any jam.
my calculator made better noises during high school calc
When I say I don't like electronic music - this is what I mean. Tracks you only need to listen to a few second of and then you know the entire track already, but it still drags on for another 7 minutes, looping with minor variations, introduced at a glacial pace. The beat is annoying, the repetition even more so.
Poopy
This wasn’t as exciting as the title suggested. Bad
haunted is right
Designed to be background music.
Their second album. Electronica. Hmmm, interesting. Ambient Electronica? Rhythmic and maybe even primal at times. The production is crispy clear. Duke Of Earlsfield - This is a track that is almost nine minutes long and goes absolutely nowhere which is endemic of the entire album. One hour and fourteen minutes and you go nowhere, there's no journey here. As I write this 23/4/2025 this is the eighteenth worst album on the list. Seventeen others must be pretty stinky.
Абсолютно не моє
This absolutely has no right being on this list. Its repetitive and not at all groundbreaking.
meh
First impression is that electronic music is perhaps not for me. I like music that I can sing to, dance to, or maybe that will help me focus. This didn’t do that for me, but I can appreciate the experimental feeling, the combination of sounds, the creativity. It was unique for me. I’m interested in learning more about its history. I’m relieved to go back to my own music after this, though.
Didn´t like it. it´s not for me, not my style.
Je m'attendais à un truc nul, mais aussi nul que ça quand même pas.
Highlight: Bubble and Slide. In a nutshell: "empty dancehall" According to Sean Cooper of All Music Review, this is “the first techno concept album”. I’m confused how one creates a techno concept album as the genre is predominantly sans vocals. Plunderphonics, yes. But techno? It helps to have good headphones while listening. Personally the loops, bleeps and bloops took longer than necessary to build up tension or lead somewhere. To me, it sounds like a CD the trio sent to the Wachowski’s for consideration for the first Matrix soundtrack. And was rejected. If someone can explain to me why this is important to the genre beyond making it to a NME’s Best Album of 1994 list, I’m all ears. Overall: 2/10
OK, alright — is this a joke? Is someone taking the mick? I want answers, dammit. This is another album in the backlog I've been accumulating since June, and like WHAT'S THAT SOUND? before it I figure it'd be one of the last I'd get to. And unlike WHAT'S THAT SOUND?, where I was just judging a book by its poorly drawn cover, this time my hesitation had some more proof backing it up. A fellow group member had reviewed it and given it a 2, calling it an annoying cacophony of bass, drums and bothersome repetition. And this is the group member who's often the kindest to this sort of electronic music! So if it can't even win **them** over... Whooof. And they are not wrong. Within the two tracks I was already sick of this album. Legit, I was, like, five minutes in and I was wondering when the thing was actually going to start. And that's just its problem, front to back! None of these songs ever fuckin' **start**! It's like they found one drum beat they liked, decided "Yeah, that's good enough," and just looped it until they got bored. Sure, they occasionally throw in some stuff on top of it, but it's always so random and there's never any sense of progression. Again, seriously, you could jump into these songs at any point and I promise you you will not have missed a thing. Y'know, I've talked about Daft Punk's HOMEWORK. That's an album i've seen some people rag on for its repetition, but you gotta understand: Daft Punk know what the hell they're doing. They aren't just looping "AROUND THE WORLD" 86 times for the hell of it. There's permutations, changes, variations, movements... It's always keeping itself fresh by adding and removing parts, or switching them up. You can jump around "Around The World", or any song from HOMEWORK, and you'll hear that all of the parts sound different from each other — and, sure, it's rawer than I like from Daft Punk (I prefer the polish on DISCOVERY), but it sure as hell beats the snot out of this. I'm not gonna call this album absolutely incompetent; there's a couple of parts here that sound alright, but this is otherwise complete amateur hour. I haven't felt this bored by an electronic album since we got those couple of drum n' bass albums And I don't think I was as bored by this album as I was by them, but I was certainly more frustrated to make up for it! Not since Red Snapper! There's just such an arrogance I feel coming out of this album. Just this pretension that they think they're **so damn** good at this. "Oh, we're so leftfield and so fuckin' minimalist and we've got such good breaks — the people at the club will just **love** this!" And maybe they did! But I'm not at the club! I'm sitting at home wondering why in the hell this album is **76 minutes**. They really couldn't have cut **anything**? It **all** had to be here? Talk about your 90's CD bloat, oh my goodness. I've seen YouTube videos where people chop down Daft Punk's DISCOVERY, but if **any album** needs it...! Like it'd salvage the project, yeah, but still, it wouldn't have hurt. And, y'know, I feel like I get what they're trying to do here. They're doin' all this stuff to prove that "techno can be more than just bleeps and bloops," as the review on AllMusic put it. But maybe there should have been better message bearers, because these guys just ain't it, man. I started writing this review before I finished listening to the album. That's honestly common practice for most of my reviews — though a bad one, I'll admit. But at least with most every album I've reviewed, I've been able to add stuff once the record's done, and change stuff around once I actually have the full picture in mind. Here, though? Yeah, if I'd let this album finish proper, I doubt I'd have anything more to add. And, yeah, I didn't finish it: I stopped with just three tracks remaining. I tapped out. And that's **really** bad form, I understand. But seriously: what would I honestly have heard in these that I didn't hear from the rest of this slog? You tell me. It's just a frustrating bore of an album. I can see how it would be hypnotic to some, but to me? I mean, this is a **haunted** dancehall, I'd hate to see one that **isn't**! Seriously, it's only for the best I decided to just yeet this one out of my backlog as soon as possible instead of waiting, goodness me...
EDM is just not my thing.
Maso
Haunted Dancehall by The Sabres of Paradise was a tough listen. To be honest, I found it monotonous and directionless—more noise than music. I'm genuinely surprised it made the list. The album struggled to hold my attention from start to finish. The tracks blur together with little variation or structure, making it hard to distinguish where one ends and the next begins. It felt more like an endurance test than a musical experience. Favourite track: If I had to choose one, Tow Truck stood out slightly—though that's faint praise. Least favourite: Honestly, it's hard to single out just one track. The entire album felt aimless and repetitive. Album artwork: The cover is probably the most interesting part of the release—visually striking and nicely in line with its 90s aesthetic.
Not for me. Bubble and Slide II sounded all right. Everything else is no. Kind of unsettling
Don’t have time to listen
This gave me a headache.
The Sabres of Paradise- Haunted Dancehall- Never heard of this band, never heard of this album- at no point in my life, did I ever listen to electronic music- heck I barely ever listened to dance music, other than mainstream R&B. But this has been an interesting listen. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again- this is why the list exists- I probably won’t ever listen to it again, but I’m glad I have heard it. Bubble and Slide- woof this wasn’t very good Bubble and Slide 2 this was considerably better Duke of Earlsfield- not being an electronica fan, I guess this is what it is Flight Path Estate- honestly, I don’t know where the cuts are (that could be my fault for listening on Youtube)- but ugh, I really don’t understand it Planet D (Portishead Remix)- this is the remix? Thank goodness they threw away the original Wilmot- now that I know Limp Bizkit made this list (missed the album and will have to give it one honest listen, but I’m 44, I’m aware) it will be hard to give anything a score lower than that, but what if I get something I will never listen to again, and actively resent listening to? Tow Truck- hey! Is that a hook? This might be the first thing on the album that doesn’t sound like the backing tracks to a 90s sci-fi movie Theme Theme 4- I suppose there was a Theme 2 and 3, but I’m not upset that I missed them Return to Planet D- some albums I come back to over multiple days- I listen to them over and over to immerse myself in the music. This album? I took multiple days just to get through it once Ballad of Nicky McGuire- not terrible- kind of a bouncy funk feeling, an Ennio Morricone feel at the end Jacob Street 7am- Chapel Street Market 9am Haunted Dancehall- I just couldn't get into it. I gave it multiple chances, and nothing grooved at all.
i'm sure there's more to the artistry here but this genuinely just sounds like a guy fucking around with garageband for an hour. there is nothing interesting here. at best it's the most barely-middling electronic music you've ever heard, but at worst it's the most boring, sparce beats with a bunch of reverb. a lot of these are barely songs. quite frankly, at times, it feels like it's barely music. is this a joke?
Слушать это невозможно
En serio esto se considera indispensable de escuchar antes de morir?
Álbum de un niño pequeño que acaba de descubrir lo que es SoundCloud y decide empezar a mezclar
Okay look, I typically really enjoy electronic music, even some of the ones that most of the users on this site tend to hate on a lot (En-tact by The Shamen and Remedy by Basement Jaxx to name two) but when it comes to Haunted Dancehall, i just can't defend it, this album is genuinely garbage. There are points of this album that feel like they have potential with their compositions but squander that by using the most irritating sounds possible. And even when they aren't irritating, they can still get incredibly repetitive especially when you consider just how long this album is. I typically disagree with a lot of the hate many of these electronic albums but this, i genuinely see why you all hate it so much. Best Song: Planet D (Portishead Remix) Worst Song: Bubble and Slide
Actually awful. I just can never get into purely electronic dance music. Its beating a dead horse the genre. Maybe they hit the horse in the ass for a second but its still the same garbage. I have this friend who sends me edm tracks every day and ive only told him this 1000 plus times I hate this music but I still get em. Maybe im just a bastard man. That first song sounds like diarrhea. I hate it very much. And after that its an hour or the same thing over and over again. Terrible. Truly terrible
Nope, under no amount of drgs
This is the 155th album I’m rating. I haven't listened to much techno but what techno I have heard was pretty cool. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Bubble and Slide, Bubble and Slide II, Duke of Earlsfield, Flight Path Estate, Planet D (Portishead Remix), Wilmot, Tow Truck, Theme, Theme 4, Return to Planet D, Ballad of Nicky McGuire, Jacob Street 7AM, Chapel Street Market 9AM, and Haunted Dancehall. All in all I liked 0/14 songs. 77 minutes of straight ass.
DNF
WTF?!!
Nah.
not my cup of tea
This was not for me. It's so experimental, but also not taking too many risks. I struggled to get into it and was happy to be out of it.
I couldn’t stand this for very long. I tried.
Listening to the first 30 seconds, someone said this album sounds like a toilet. I proceeded to laugh hysterically until the album ended.
My spaceship, my music. Don't like it? Get out and float It starts to resemble music closer to the end but I'd probably get ejected before it
Говно)
Fuck this noise.
Rough listen, not my vibe. 1.5
I had to skip one of the last songs because it just sounded like an alarm going off and I couldn’t do that for 6 minutes straight.
I kept waiting for some revelation as to why this was included because it started so weak, but it started weak and if possible, got worse
Too experimental for me 8 min tracks too long without much diversity. I can see why some people like it and there are the odd sample mix that sounds good but overall not my thing.
Dumb. Noise.
I’ve heard some awful shit on this list, but this takes the cake. This is audible torture, and there is no dancehall to be found by the time I hit stop. It’s less haunted, and more cursed.
2/10 Originally I thought this album sounded fun and I had it at two starts, but the more and more I listened the more I realized I’d probably never come back to this disaster. While I can appreciate what the artist(s) were going for with the “haunted” and eerie vibe of this album, it ends up just sounding like an old shitty flash game soundtrack that I’m listening to on loop for hours trying to find the most obscure solution. Just a bunch of weird background noise.
I think my life did not require me listening to 77 minutes of this
Couldn't deal with the repetitive circumstances noises.
Why is this on the list? I really need to look into the criteria of making the 1001 List. I did not need to listen to this before I die.
Couple songs in middle I could listen to, otherwise connected with nothing. Couldn’t listen to every song all the way through.
A couple minutes of this might be okay - and, yeah, the title track at the end would be fine to pipe out to the front porch for trick-or-treaters on Halloween - but 77 minutes of this at any other time of the year? Absofuckinglutely not.
weird
I tried, but it really just sounded like random noises from around the house, repeating over and over. It was pure torture to make it through this album.
Very impressed that they get a record deal!
I try my best not to be overly hateful of electronic music, but this list makes it really hard to do so.
Holy shit was this irritating!!!!!!!!!
I did not enjoy this at all.
There are a small number of tracks on here that are a little more interesting than the others (for example, "Wilmot"), but mostly I don't appreciate this.
There are some interesting rhythms and melodies scattered through the album, but it all feels incredibly slow and plodding. It was a real chore to finish the whole album. Just like the other electronic albums on here, I have no idea what situation or mood would lead to someone wanting to listen to this.
I usually like experimental shit but this one is kinda ass and i struggle to cope with it- DNF'd after 4 tracks.
While there are a couple of Interesting tunes here and there, most of it is boring as hell
I.... don't like this and I fucking listen to aggressive hyperpop with people named Femtanyl and PUSSY RIOT....
*gif of Ron Swanson throwing pc into trash* Babys first bandcamp song, all daft with no punk, as bland as their country's food, I would take my morning drive again if it meant I got to listen to something else I don't care that it's experimental, it still has to sound good
Much like getting kicked in the nuts. Unless you’re into that sort of thing, it’s just best to avoid it.
just sounds like two pots being smacked together
I never finished an album out of spite before. This is crappy piece of music was not going to break my soul. This album should be used by the police to make criminals that barricaded themselves with hostages to leave the building. That is the only purpose for this piece of garbage.
whatever..
Long, boring, repetitive Standout song: Tow Truck
Dull dull dull
müll
Schlimm
More than noise, but not quite music.
Was never gonna get through the whole thing
Pero...es broma?, si la respuesta es NO, ingiero que esto es BASURA. No usaré mi tiempo para ese disparate
This sounded like licking a battery. An initial thrill followed by a metallic aftertaste and then nothing. If this was on the list to represent warp records and this genre then its done a very bad job.
I almost gave it a 2 just so I didn't seem like an asshole, but I just can't with this genre. I guess it's a "me, not you" thing.
Felt like I was at one of those glow stick goths under a bridge conventions, dancing around in New Rocks.
I don't get it
dnf i'm just not doing this
Too robotic. Not for me
Noise.
I’ll admit, I punted on this maybe 20 minutes into a 76-minute album. 30-year-old, spare repetitive techno really didn’t do it for me today.
Gross
... What the hell did I just listen to? Nope. No. I don't know what it was trying to be. But I think I just experienced what it feels like going through a very bad acid trip. Or maybe now I can relate better to people who chronically grind their teeth. I felt all the things, and I hated it.
"Boy, yesterday was a mediocre electronica album. Wonder what today will bring!" "Oh." This one had the benefit of being slightly more grating than the last one. So good job, I suppose!
The only edge here is the razor on the album cover. The sound never builds to anything and most of these tracks run for way longer than needed to get the point across. There's good electronic music out there but this ain't it.
Nah
Garbage
why
It sounded like a soundtrack to a bad Megadrive game
Just an hours worth of noise and not even groovey noise
Stupendously bad, so bad you'll be wishing that straight razor on the album cover was in your hands instead
Acid techno...stuff
Pointless, repetitive noise
This sounds like my ass after I've had too much taco bell. None of these songs are interesting enough to listen to for 45 seconds, let alone for 8 minutes. I feel like this site is punishing me for giving me some actual good music last week. Proof that not everything was good in the 90s.
"Hey, look, I've learnt how to make these really cool beats with the computer and I can add all sorts of samples and effects on top of it!" "Sounds interesting, did you write any songs or use it for any creative purposes?" "Well, I guess not, but I did it with a computer, so it's innovative..." "I'll take 76 minutes worth!"
Didnt listen
Brutal listen. Not sure how this one is considered a paragon of music.
1/10
The Good: Music in a dancehall… The Bad: seems the dancehall is haunted… The Ugly: figuring out that the sabers of paradise are there to aid in ending one’s life!!! I recall hearing “trance” music the first time; it put me in a trance, for sure… Then I made the decision that trance was not for me, and now I’ve been forced to listen to it again. So, get 4 babies to bang on some pots while you record the sound, then head into your basement, or attic, and load those sounds into your garageband software, then just create a short sequence, repeat it a thousand times, and you have 1 song, which, as fate will have it, sounds almost identical to all the other 13 songs on this here record. 1*
Not my thing. Sorry.
It would get zero stars if possible. Was not feeling this album
Using a term Robert Dimery and this band would better understand, this album is "shite". It's probably one of Yoko Ono's favorite albums to yowl to.
another shitty electronic album that goes on for far too long
Nonsense.
Not great
