sweet but samey

Some great stuff on here.

Doesn't have any of the well known Beach Boys songs on it but still enjoyable. Look like a bunch of nerds on the cover.

some bangers, some filler.

Beach Boysia olenkin kuunnellut jonkin verran viimeaikoina Lasse Kurjen Rakkaudesta-ohjelman innoittamana.

Tenho sempre as minhas dúvidas. Só um deles saberá. MotA: Do You Wanna Dance? "Do you wanna dance and hold my hand?"

The Beach Boys are starting to grow up. Help Me, Rhonda is my favorite with Dance, Dance, Dance a second. 3.4/5.0

Day and night with beautiful harmonies Pet sounds before getting weird

Mood-lifting tunes for sure! Pretty indifferent but the surface-level happiness it evokes brings it to 3-star territory.

I think it's one of the better surf rock albums out there. I'm just not the biggest fan since it all sort of blends together after two songs. This album tends to avoid that by placing alternating between slower songs and faster songs, but some of them are quite alike. Overall though it was alright. Favorite track: Help Me, Rhonda

Sounds just like every other beach boys song, don't really see what the hype is about here, they sound like a wannabe barbershop quartet

Familiar with the singles but not previously aware of the album. More immediately accessible than the 'masterpiece'. Preferred the less bouncy second side.

Too happy for my taste...beach boys remind me of being in high school at the principals office because they would always have oldies playing - 6/10, and that's being generous

It’s The Beach Boys. Every album sounds kind of the same, but still decent

Schönes, gut zu hörendes Album. Aber für meinen Geschmack nicht kantig genug

it's the Beach Boys: proto-pop some pretty good songs, and the others aren't totally lame -- I call that a win for 60's white-guy music! 3/5

\I think this is when the songwriting and arrangements got more Pet Soundsy, you can hear the roots of it

Rock muy suave, melódico. Muchos coros. Un poco aburridito.

Fine. It's the Beach Boys. You know exactly what you're getting.

I tried. I just hate this style of music. I’m completely unable to be objective. Giving it a 3 because I’m supposed to.

Some decent old tunes

Quite cheesy, and without the musical appeal of Pet Sounds. Not too bad, just a bit repetitive and corn-dog.

Not my favorite The Beach Boys album. I really like Pet Sounds, and you can hear some of its proto-sound in this album, but it is not super strong in hits and shows how tired Brian Wilson was before the genius Pet Sounds album the next year. Surely some decent songs, but if Pet Sounds is a 5, this is a 3 for sure.

“When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)” was used over the opening credits for a really terrific, short-lived (only two seasons) TV show called MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE, starring Ray Romano, the late great Andre Braugher and a surprisingly good (given how hammy QUANTUM LEAP was) Scott Bakula. Ok, that’s it. Ive all out of positive things to say about having to listen to another Beach Boys album. 1.5 stars

this should probably rate higher, but other than one song I would never listen to it by choice

rip beach boys you would have loved pitch perfect

perdão, não sou fã dos beach boys....

Omw to surround a woman in a bar and not leave until she gives in

Cloying lyrics and harmonies with a couple of decent tracks.

I like the Beach Boys but this album was just a bit too squeaky clean for me.

Never saw the attraction to the beach boys.

Classic Beach Boys—again, much like you’d expect.

I’ve never been a fan. It’s just too bubblegum for me. I do respect Brian Wilson and for that I give this album a 2.

Not for me. The style of singing was super grating and didn’t help that every single song sounded the same. The last song on the album actually did something different, but was the shortest. Favorite song: bull session (didn’t have to listen to them sing anymore, and then it was over)

If there is anything that has been totally reinforced by this project, it's that I do not like The Beach Boys. I never have, and apparently I never will. I have always found their vocals to be grating and whiny sounding. Musically they're fine, and without vocals I'd likely find them to be more pleasant to listen to. But that's not the case. Lastly, In The Back of My Mind is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. To my ear they are off key the entire track. I assume that was intentional, and could have been interesting if it were a good song. Or if I had cared enough by then that it would matter. Thankfully less than 30 minutes long.

I truly don't get the beach boys. How can some people call this snoozefest the American Beatles?

She Knows Me Too Well

white boy slop

Boring as fuck. By no means bad but by no means good

Just hasn’t aged well

It all really sounds the same. Heard way too much of this as a child.

Christ, I do not care for this band. Two stars because I recognize the artistic merit.

The more I hear of the Beach Boys, the more I hear of the Beach Boys. I actually liked "Do You Wanna Dance?" but it's one of only a couple bright spots before it all tanks. I was actively hostile to "I'm So Young" and "She Knows Me Too Well," and perplexed by the "bull session" at the end. Our journey with the Beach Boys has now concluded, not a moment too soon.

Not a big fan of The beach boys, but I do see the influence they had for their time. I have a feeling this album isn’t their best one so i’m looking forward to receiving something else of theirs.

Respect and all that, but not my thing at all

Meh it all sounds the same

No. 140 OK I guess, very much Beach Boys sounds. Bit samey.

It all feels very cheesy. It's extremely vocal-forward in the mix and all of it sounds so antiquated. Like this is "Golden oldies" music made for grandparents. Still, it sounds nice enough.

I didn't like this album, in fact I found it rather dumb with terrible lyricism, but I just wanna address the other reviews I read here. What exactly is with GenX and hating any male vocalist who can sing higher than a Low C and doesn't sound like Eddie Vedder? You sound like the worst kind of 60-year-old manchild who still acts like they're on the playground. Castratti? Got their balls stuck in a car door? I'm sure those lines would've KILLED on the playground in 1977. 2 stars to spite the spiteful.

The harmonies are stuck in time and a bit overdone, the ballads are sickly sweet. If you like the Beach boys then it will hit the mark

Always have a good time listening to the beach boys, even if their songs sound pretty similar to me. I kept googling to see if this was before or after they collabbed with charles manson

I feel bad giving this a two. It's a vibe but it's not mine. I was relieved it was only 28 minutes. It does what it does well, but it feels very one note to me. I can appreciate the influence this band and album had on later acts and also hold the belief that the later acts improved upon it. Pros- the iconic harmonies and vocal style. You know its the Beach Boys immediately. Cons- The lyrics (very one note and surface level IMO). The repetitive instrumentals. It's a vibe that makes me harken back to a 60s soda fountain, but I don't feel like I'll ever willingly play any song off this album again. Not a single track stood out to me.

This is not the Help Me, Rhonda you know and love! Warning! It is Beach Boys-y. I dunno. To me it is all very same same after a while and I didn't super care for this album. I think there is better Beach Boys out there!

The Beach Boys' classic harmonies and swinging instrumentals are definitely here, but the basic lyricism and misogyny are here as well. You can just turn your brain off for a bit but the generic lyrics and samey short songs are still a pretty bad combo. Favorite Track: She Knows Me Too Well

Even Help Me Rhonda, which was the biggest hit off the record sounded like a B side. Very formulaic. All very similar.

146/1001 First listen. The Beach boys just sound so goofy to me. I could never take this band seriously. There’s definitely no mistaking these guys. It’s okay mixed in with other bands of the 50’s & 60’s but just a straight up album of these guys? No thank you. 4/10

1. okay i'm in a better mood today, even though the existential dread of my future chronically hangs over me, but i'm feeling a little less feral about it today. I like the beach boys, at least the few songs that i've heard from pet sounds. This first song is not really wowing me though. 2. It's a shame cuz this is also my kind of music and a genre i like, but.............a little trite. Obviously they pretty much invented this kind of sound, but it's trite now IM SORRY. 3. Never heard a song about grown men defending their little sister. 4. I literally have absolutely nothing to say about this song. In one ear and out the other. 5. Catchy, i guess. 6. Alright folks, I think this is the last one for me today. Sorry y'all. Nothing for me here.

I had high hopes for this album, but every song sounded so similar, and the lyrics were very cliche and tired.

The only distinguishing thing I could say about this album is that it was unmistakeably the Beach Boys. Nothing grabbed my ear.

All Beach Boys songs sound the same to me. Now that I actually pay attention to the lyrics...ick. At least it was short?

Not bad, certainly not great. Innocuous pop. I've never understood what the fuss with The Beach Boys was all about.

This was painful to listen to. I gave it one more star than I probably should have.

This album enforces my dislike of the Beach Boys. Just not that interesting for me.

Without Brian Wilson it sounds like AI

I struggle to enjoy the sound of the Beach Boys, I think mainly because I grew up in 1980s So Cal and this type of music to young me was "old". Now many years later I can appreciate the vibe and nostalgia - it evokes cravings for milkshakes and burgers at some roadside joint - but it doesn't mean I want to listen to it. Sorry, not sorry.

Good ole beach boys

Standard Beach Boys fare. Other than Pet Sounds, I was never really a fan.

Its... Beach Boys. I assume more is coming on this list from them as this really is pretty standard fare. Help Me Rhonda was the single, and if that is the strongest track...

The Beach Boys are fun but I can only take so much of them before I go crazy….like one or two songs, I guess I just have to be in the correct mood

Pretty inoffensive. All very samey.

Favorite tracks: Do You Wanna Dance? It's the beach boys

I just find this stuff deeply boring. There are great albums by The Beach Boys but this one is all nursery rhymes

I guess surf bros had good times in the 60's.

OK I guess, very much Beach Boys sounds. Bit samey, not my cup of tea

<hitting the Beach Boys snooze button> no! not today! first two tracks are ok, as far as this kind of pop goes. you need to have a clearly audible cool guitar sound. lost the plot by song 3. perfectly fine to soundtrack scenes in the 1950s when you want to make the 1950s look stupid. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

A guy can appreciate that even this early, Beach Boys did neat stuff production-wise. But it doesn’t necessarily help a guy get over the sickly sweet my-best-gal Americanness of the whole thing. At least me.

The first half of the album was exactly what I expected of the Beach Boys. The second half of the album did pick-up exploring themes that weren't just saccharine pop. The Bull Session track was a mystery to me though. It didn't add anything at all, but did detract.

Lyrically another monothematic album, which unfortunately sounds pretty samey.

Beach boys.

is this just an album of re-recorded songs?

I'm not a fan of the Beach Boys. They seem fake and creepy, and I have a hard time listening to this falsetto pop crap. If I want good surf music I'll listen to Dick Dale.

Iconic 60s Americana, but every song is so cheesy and sounds the same.

I was not in the mood for this saccharine stuff today. Beach Boys were so prolific back in the day and you gotta sift through a mountain of stuff that hasn't aged well to find the gems. Stick to the greatest hits albums!

Help me Rhonda gets this 2 stars.

Beach Boys write a song about something other than "girls" or cars challenge: IMPOSSIBLE The Beach Boys always make me wonder what was going through everyone's minds in the 50s and 60s (other than lead paint, because that is obvious). Was this really the pinnacle? The best that America had to offer? It's crazy too, because the album after this was one of the best-selling of all time. This album was, apparently, NOT ENOUGH about cars and girls and love (even though that's literally all it's about), so the record company told them they had to make more overtly surfing-in-California-with-cars-and-girls music, and they did, and it sold like fucking CRAZY. Which is like...WHAT??? People's minds are so feeble that any level of metaphor or symbolism confounds them. If it's not literally saying "Girls in California, drivin' my car, down to the beach where we party some more!", they're like, "WAIT, this isn't about girls or cars at all!! I want my money back!" And it's not like this album ISN'T about all of that, it literally is just the same shit. People are so shallow that this is somehow a "progressive" album by the day's standards, which is crazy to me, because it's literally...not. Adding Harpsichord does not make something groundbreaking. It's still just dance dance dance, girls girls girls; it's still just trite, shallow, surface-level pap, but because there is a half layer of descriptive language, nobody was able to realize that or something, which is fucking scary. Side note: Mike Love is such a piece of shit, it's actually incredible. He literally only thinks about women and cars, spinning around in his shriveled brain like a carousel 24/7. "No, I do not like Mike Love at all". Me either, Brian. I am so glad that our brains are mostly past this garbage. I would never in a million years call this groundbreaking or visionary, and it's nuts that at some point people did not realize that you COULD INDEED make music that wasn't just about cars and girls and California. Their brains must have all been mush, never having thought outside of a single box in their entire straight, obedient, boot-licking, boring lives. It's fucking crazy that the Beach Boys are one of the highest-selling bands of all time - it will never cease to amaze me and also make me wonder, with great fear and worry, who exactly is walking around the same Earth as me. Absolutely horrifying thought. 2/5, "Please Let Me Wonder" is alright, "She Knows Me Too Well" is also alright. Brian Wilson was the only good thing about the Beach Boys. If you need evidence of that, just listen to...literally any of their albums without him. Actually, don't. That would probably physically harm you.

wonderful

The Beach Boys have always sounded pretty dated to me, but I was surprised with just how good Pet Sounds was. I was hoping this album would continue to change my mind about their music, but no.

I think I'm just not a Beach Boys guy.

FAVO: Dance, dance, dance,

The Beach Boys will always find a way to write the best vocal harmonies you've ever heard over the dumbest songs you've ever heard.

Are we allowed to say it’s kind of average? A couple of cracking singles, sure, and the craft that has gone into the production is obvious but too many of these songs weren’t worth that level of attention. Most of it distinctly forgettable.

Beach Boys are pretty boring.

It's the beach boys. If you like them you will live this album. If you don't you won't. Musically it's fine I just don't like the beach boys sound.

I can see how the beach boys sound good enough for someone to like them, but alas I do not

It’s not The Beach Boys album I’m reaching for when I want to hear them.

OK. 2/5

Come on, i know they can do better. What's this crap singing?

Pas mon vibe

kinda boring

It's got some good melodies. It shows its age periodically. Nothing in here that's especially groundbreaking listening in 2025, but it's still solid listening.

I'm so sick of the Beach Boys. Why do critics love this band so much? Did I need to listen to every single song they ever wrote for this challenge? I got the idea after the first ten or so.

Dios mio que bodrioooo Nota: 2.2

God dammit the beach boys just rub me the wrong way sometimes. There are moments when it’s their music makes me feel complete and there are then moments when I feel like I’m losing my mind. This album left me with half a brain, feeling like I’m being belittled and sung to like I’m 5 years old. 2 stars because of Brian Wilson

No surf or car songs? No over the top industry changing production?... Meh, it's ok I guess.

The Beach Boys have always been a little too Barbershoppy and sugar coated. Today! gives you a sugar buzzlike most of their work. They do stray from the surfer vibe on this album and tried to show the world they are versatile. I don't think they hit the mark here and def improve their experimentation on the next release. It's a shorty so it doesn't overstimulate your sweet tooth...1.7 stars.

A bunch of sappy teenage love songs that all sound the same. The sound is kind of nice, but I've never understood the love for the Beach Boys.

Bit dull

Beach Boys. Hmm - have always seemed like a cheesy ripoff of the Beatles, and nothing on this album changes my view. I do appreciate the underlying harmonic setup - it's not simple 12-bar blues based 60s rock. Everything on on top is saccharine sweet and cloying - falsetto and at times screeching (She Knows me too well) vocals, slimey harmonies and questionable lyrics. The upbeat songs are at least tolerable, but the ballads are horrible.

Much slower and more boring than I was hoping for. I like their more surf-y songs and this album had only a couple. I can see why our moms liked them.

Sounds like the Beach Boys. Not really my style, but I understand they impacted American music pretty heavily. Didn't hate it but wouldn't listen again. All the songs are the same.

I get their influence and the beauty of their music but it doesn't resonate with me that much.

I just can't get into the Beach Boys and listening to more of them doesn't seem to be helping. I know I'm the crazy one here - there is too much evidence in favor of everyone else - but what can you do? The music is OK, I guess. The lyrics are just inane. And I like some pretty inane stuff, but this is inane in ways that annoy me. I do appreciate that this album is only 29 minutes long.

Haven't heard this Beach Boys album before. I'm starting to realize most of their songs are just one phrase repeated ad nauseam with somebody going "woooo eee woooo" in the background 2/5

It was ok. Wouldn’t listen to again, not really my thing

Not much a fan of this type of songs. Nothing wrong with it though.

I can't get into the Beach Boys outside of Pet Sounds, Smile, and Surfs Up.

Some hits, some misses, but consistently has sweet harmonies. Lyrics have not aged well though. Hard to get past that

Zuviel 70ies

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks:Help Me, Rhonda I guess the Beach Boys get a point for modernizing (relatively speaking) the concept of the barbershop quartet/quintet with their harmonizing and whatnot, but otherwise, this mostly sucks. The early and mid sixties are inundated with this boy band lovey-dovey shit and it's fucking exhausting. Some other poster said it best, when talking about the Everly Brothers - A Date With The Everly Brothers (it's the top voted comment for that album), paraphrasing: "there's something to be said about the Vietnam conflict that caused 50/60s rock bands to finally shut the fuck up about girls for a bit", and he couldn't be more right. I have no idea how old these guys were when they recorded this album, but some of these songs are so cringy. When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) and So Young in particular are just mind-numbingly bad. The only redeeming song on the album is Help Me, Rhonda.

Really really wanted this to be good and it wasn't. Just so disappointed.

The Beach Boys music is so formulaic it's for babies (of all kinds). There's nothing special or thematic with this record. You're really better off getting a Beach Boys greatest hits instead. The Beach Boys do their thing, and do it well though. I'll give them that. But damn, they can't end a song. The Beach Boys have more fades than Lucas had wipes in Star Wars. I'm adjusting my ratings to be more conscious that these are supposed to be the best records ever released, not what I'd give them as a generic record I happened across.

Not my favourite beach boys album

Ok. Couple of classic tunes but is just nice background music to me not an earth shattering album.

Pretty dated listening now. Never a huge beach boys fan and this album encapsulates why.

harmonies were nice, didn’t mind the summer vibe

I’m assuming that there are more coming, but interestingly the first two Beach Boys albums I’ve encountered in this project have come within a week of Brian Wilson’s death. (I’m assuming/hoping this is coincidence as I haven’t gotten a Sly album yet - a travesty!) The first was the far superior Surf’s Up - an album that legitimately got me to reconsider my feelings about The Beach Boys. This album returns me to my prejudices. I think a lot of people start with the feelings about this band that I currently hold and then move towards a realization of Brian Wilson’s genius. I sort of go the opposite direction and can recognize the genius and his contribution to pop music and still not be all that interested in the band. Still, I’m glad that I live in a world where The Beach Boys happened and I’m ride or die for Uncle Jesse.

While “The Beach Boys Today!” showcases the group’s signature harmonies and undeniable musical skill, its polished, upbeat style feels rooted in early ’60s pop conventions. Compared to the more experimental and emotionally nuanced sound of their later work, particularly Pet Sounds, this album lacks the depth and complexity I personally gravitate toward. An admirable effort, but ultimately not to my taste

Nice background music. I respect whatever influence they have but it's not something I'd seek out normally. Tracks I liked: good to my baby, she knows me too well. Would I revisit: no.

Mwah, it was OK.5/10

I feel like everyone this album came after the sad passing. However to be objective I have never been a big fan of the beach boys it feels to me like if the Beatles never grew out of making girl teen bobber pop. Its a real shame as I listen to the lyrics of songs like when I grow up its a great song hidden behind a style I just can't enjoy fully.

When I was 12 I listened to a Beach Boys Greatest Hits album. For about a year I thought it was pretty great. And then its idealized America about dancing with girls and cars and surfing grew old. Enter Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan and Pink Floyd (i can't explain that transition either). Do You Wanna Dance? Good to My Baby Don't Hurt My Little Sister - they really do harmonies better than anyone not signed to Motown. Its a strangely upbeat rhythm for the subject matter When I Grow Up (To Be a Man) Help Me Rhonda Dance, Dance, Dance Please Let Me Wonder I'm So Young Kiss Me Baby She Knows Me Too Well In the Back of My Mind Bull Session with Big Daddy Wow- this is not a rock band. This is a pop band that had the ability to play guitar. The music is solid, but overall, they don't come across as immensely talented other than their vocals.

Boring '60s pop rock, every song sounds the same, every song is about the same thing - girls. And often the lyrics are sad or creepy as fuck. I still don't get The Beach Boys but maybe the later weirder stuff will speak to me more? This definitely didn't.

Didn't enjoy the Album, but... RIP Brian Wilson.

Old as hell

More Beach Boys so soon? This is great work, and so wholesome. Pet Sounds certainly felt more enjoyable to me, so I'm gonna notch this one star lower.

I understand the significance and the history....I just never embraced the Beach Boy sound

Understandably not the listen it probably was back in the 60s. Scoring based off enjoyment and likelihood I’ll listen to it again.

*RIP Brian Wilson *Yup, sounds like The Beach Boys... Old timey harmonies about beaches and women. *Fave track - Help Me Rhonda. *Super short at 28 mins. That’s about as long as it takes to get really tired of the this sound. *Wouldn’t be mad if someone were playing this. Would not actively seek it out though. RATING - 6/10

Nice album, but not really the style I like

Nice record, safe and from the production line. The 8th record? I think about how far the Beatles had come in the same time. A bit rinse and repeat for me.

I understand their importance in music. But other than their most famous songs, the rest of their catalog has always been very repetitive to me

I've always been kind of indifferent to The Beach Boys, like I don't mind them but their music has always sounded more like something you'd throw on in the background at a party than something I'd actively sit down and jam out to, and this album didn't really change that opinion too much.

Meh. RIP Brian Wilson tho

meh, but don't remember much

Some of the beach boys music is really good, but this doo-wop stuff is not

This was not for me. I can take the Beach Boys in small doses, and I can recognize just how transformative a songwriter Brian Wilson was, but these songs are just SO old-fashioned and quaint. I get that it's the era they were produced in, but this is overwhelmingly "aw, shucks" and broadly insincere. Looking forward to "Pet Sounds" coming up, though. This is just not a great record.

Enjoyable enough but nowhere near as good as Pet Sounds.

Extraordinarily tough listen, it's like it's covered in molasses, it's so sweet and slow moving. Makes the achievements of Pet Sounds only a year later even more stratospheric. Help Me Rhonda and Do You Wanna Dance are enjoyable. Some flashes of enjoyment elsewhere, but subpar for me. I'd rather listen to Phil Spector production than an attempt at it.

Immature

I just can’t listen to this. The vocals on The Beach Boys albums hit my ears wrong- grating and intolerable. I like some songs on Pet Sounds, and the instrumentals on the Smile reconstruction are good- and that’s it. This band just sucks. And I stand by that while acknowledging that Brian Wilson was a genius, and that he had a way rougher life than he deserved. RIP.

I know people like them...I don't get it.

No, it was yesterday.

Started strong but I lost interest about 3/4 of the way in Nice melodies and harmonies but was a bit bland after 6-7 songs

RIP Brian Wilson

Far from their best work.

I think we need to have a full and frank discussion around the fact that the American Cultural Hegemony has made the world believe the Beach Boys are a great band, when, under real observation, they are creepy and formulaic shit.

Sorry Brian but I just don’t get the appeal

2/10 needs Problem Child.

This album has literally none of my favourite songs. Pet Sounds is an all time great, but even All Summer Long, Smiley Smile, Surfer Girl, Surfin' Safari etc. have more for me. If I am in the mood for the Beach Boys, it won't be this album I put on.

Niet slecht, niet goed.

Timely since the last of The Beach Boys passed away yesterday. It definitely sounds like the 60s. Recognized a few of the songs, but the style is just too dated for me.

Ikke dårlig, men litt trasig

I don't think I like The Beach Boys very much. Their voices sort of annoy me idk. Their songs are fine, but I won't ever go out of my way to listen to them.

Cheesy

Still like Help me Rhonda, but otherwise this just makes me feel full cringe. Musically impressive, sure, but Jesus

Never got into tir Beach Boys bar the odd track. This was at best mostly OK. Otherwise rhy harmonies are excruciating. Ain't no CSNY. Worst was She Knows Me Too Well. At least it was short! Sorry Brian.

Sneaky of Brian Wilson to die yesterday, presumably to get me to give a higher score

Nothing sounds more aged or outdated to me than The Beach Boys. Their overdone barbershop quartet style is just something so of the past with seemingly little relevance to the now. That’s probably incredibly factually incorrect but that’s just my ears take on this.

Nowhere near as good as Pet Sounds but still not bad

Very early rock, nothing special.

#610. Beach Boy dies, next day "random" generator tells me to listen to Beach Boys. Coincidence or conspiracy? Whatever. Still cheesy as hell either way. 2/5: meh

Tarpeeksi beach boysia jo

quite chilled, like it based on the mood

I don’t like The Beach Boys one bit. It’s like The Dude’s dislike of the Eagles. I understand why people like them and appreciate their impact on music, but don’t like them.

A couple of OK songs, but otherwise rather dull 4/10

Boy oh boy is this a lot of the Beach Boys. Seminal work in a lot of ways, paved the way for a lot of modern music. But my god am I not feeling it.

I did not like this album. Songs sounded repetitive. I was excited to get this album because I haven’t listened to them since my younger days. Disappointed!

not quite iconic, but historically significant nonetheless.

1. Happy music, like to kiss a girl and be a main couple. Cool solo. Sooo surf rock. 2. Super skippable, nothing fancy. 3. Boring af. 4. Kinda mid too, enjoyable si le doy más escuchas, creo. 5.Zzzzz 6. Ratico de euforia, not great. 7. ZZZZZZ 8. Cuter, chévere pa oír de BGM. 9. Gay af. 10. She knows me, ajá, not great either. A little nicer than las otras. No me gusta el tipo de música that much pues. Todo es subjetivo, obviously. - 11. In The Back of My Mind. Cute, softer, entretenida, hasta ahí. 12. Diálogo. Nada que ver, maybe fue genial en su tiempo, pero not my thing. Le daré un 2 de 5 en mi opinión.

6/12/25. Good songs, just a bit forgettable to me. Especially compared to the Beach Boys' later work which is more progressive. Still enjoyed the harmonies.

RIP Brian Wilson but wow this is not Pet Sounds. A very long 28 minutes. The first side was the same song on repeat and although the ballads on side two were much more satisfying the lyrics torpedoed any good will they garnered. Great band, terrible record.

On kyllä suht ärsyttävää renkutusta. Ainakin tähän hetkeen. Kappaleet on samanlaisia liian sokerisia. Liian positiivisia. Parhaat: Do You Wanna Dance?

The first track on this album sucks all of the life and soul out of Bobby Freeman's 'Do You Wanna Dance?'. The rest of the album is so milquetoast that it can't escape that abyss. Help me, Rhonda!

It's fine. The Beach Boys aren't my thing, and I don't think I'll ever willingly come back to them. But their vocal harmonies are nice.

not bad but not memorable

2nd album. 2.5 stars. I'm sure there will be many many worse albums which might bump this up, but pretty much all of the songs sound the same. And many are about the same thing- horny kids who feel they're too young to fuck (or at least have to write songs to pretend they aren't fucking)

never listened to a full beach boys album, made me nostalgic for something i never experienced lol

⭐️⭐️/5 Look….I'm gonna be honest and say it, I’ve never been a Beach Boys fan. Every song sounds exactly the same and I just can’t be that hyped and harmonized for an entire album. Had to stop listening halfway through.

It was ok, but not really my cup of tea.

I feel bad even thinking this, but I really didn't enjoy most of the tracks on here. I appreciate that the Beach Boys are revered and loved, but this was too lightweight for me.

This isn't meant for my generation. Boomer music.

I really tried to like this album more considering it's known as one of beach boys best, but repeating side-a of the album was exhausting and boring. I think it's a stepping stone in the right direction but still long way off from what beach boys are capable of.

Cheesy but nostalgic whether I like it or not.

I cant

Not my favorite beach boys album.

Not to my personal taste but I enjoyed it because it gave me summer vibes and the feeling of being transported to 60s.

Ikke dette heller.

I don't think I like the Beach Boys

Good harmonies but hasn't aged well.adolescent lyrics written by men in their mid twenties

This album is cool because it's (in my opinion) the first time in the BBoys' discography that you can see the mask slipping off Brian Wilson. Classic Beachies harmonies, weird Wilson melodies, creepy misogyny lyrics. What more could you ask for in '65. I ask for more now. If I had to bet this is not the only Beach Boys album on this list. They certainly deserve one, but this one is not it. Fave song: Please Let Me Wonder. something beautifully sad from them for a change. Two stars for Wilson doing a public musical genius mental health breakdown.

Rip Brian, sorry bro this just isn’t that bless

Feels appropriate given the sad passing of Brian Wilson. The songwriting and musical talent is undeniable. It's all so upbeat and it's easy to see why it's a solid feel-good-advert soundtrack option. God Only Knows is one of my favourite songs from the band and I've not really stepped much beyond that. This journey confirmed why. So unique but not my vibe

I did not care for this.

Unpopular opinion - Every Beach Boys song sounds just like the one before it. I don't know what I'm missing. It's not the worst song I've ever heard, but it's not really special either. I saw a quote yesterday saying "It's not that the Beatles were better than The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson was just outnumbered" and I just don't get it. It's good clean family-friendly fun, but it's surface-level cheese, too. Stuff that preppy white boys played to try and kiss a girl after 9 pm on a Saturday night. Lame. I'll take The Beach Boys in a small doses, but even this 27 minute album was too much. I thought that about their Pet Sounds album as well in the past. Give me one Beach Boys song at a pool, and I'll give it 5 stars. Give me a full album, and you get this 2 star review.

Plastic cheese. This album tastes like a Norman Rockwell and reminds me why the British Invasion had to happen

i think the fact that it took me weeks to get through this is evidence enough that i tried really hard to like it and it’s just not my favorite but i know it’s important and all that, just can’t get myself to enjoy that particular sound for so much of their music

It was a mistake listening to this immediately after Neil Young’s - on the beach, because this seemed quite shallow in comparison. Maybe will have to give it another listen soon

One of those “nothing wrong with it, just not for me” type of albums. Highly reminiscent of Wawa’s Hoagiefest jingle. Makes me think of drive in theaters and malt shakes. Fun for the summer but I’ve never heard a track I felt compelled to throw onto a playlist.

Meh. To samey. 2-3/10.

Lots of recognizable songs on here, but this is not my style of music. It's way too boy-band for me, even if it is well done. RIP Brian Wilson

Got pushed this album 2 days after Brian Wilson's death (RIP). Production is great but it's just not for me. Has such a dated sound to it. All the songs are less than 3 minutes and it just seems mass produced and white washed. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)

Mid and jangly

The high, fluting voices of the Beach Boys are castrato wails: remarkable technical achievements, but incomprehensible on an emotional level. How do you relate to something that sounds so alien and formal, especially when most people find it hard to listen to opera. Yet, the best work here – When I Grow Up (To Be A Man), Help Me, Rhonda – is as lush and effecting as a classical movement, being harmonically rich and structurally interesting, even while constrained by doo-wop and surftone aesthetics. The remainder, which doesn't constitute the best, are nicely arranged pop standards. And this split between good pop and beyond pop reminds me of nothing so much as A Hard Day's Night, where the division between proficient statis and the stratosphere isn't exactly the same. However, the difference is the Beatles's title track itself. Not only is it catchy and clever, with a previously impossible studio-processed mystery chord at the beginning, but the title itself is new. A play-on-words from Ringo, the title incapsulates another Beatles innovation: the artist as a character. The four forceful characters of the Beatles – and their humour – becomes inextricable from the music. The Beach Boys introduce their sense of humour later – Vegetables; She's Goin' Bald – but it is a goofy humour, not the socially adept humour of the Beatles. And Brian Wilson's personality only becomes apparent when he has free reign over the music, which he gets on Pet Sounds. However, the distinction is clear: the powerhouse personalities of the Beatles are propulsive, until the point where they pull themselves apart; Wilson's gentle character is at once protected and suffocated by the empty-headed pablum of his band mates, his business moguls, and bank managers. Too reserved to push through himself, he has been drawn out and, even then, risks being smashed to smithereens by the pressures. 2.5 I felt bad for the girls in Good to my Baby and She Knows Me Too Well. I felt bad for the Little Sister (and rather sorry for her boyfriend too). I felt absolutely dreadful for Rhonda. Some of the tunes are terrific and the arrangements are sweet and absorbing. But the Beach Boys are utter creeps. 2/5

getting this the day after brian wilson died 😢……….. and then not liking it at all 😭😭

If Beige had a baby

Never a huge fan of this band. It all sounds like it came from the same formula.

Brian Wilson is talented, without a doubt. I think the Beach Boys formula just doesn't work for me. 2.5

To quote Bernie Sanders: "Yeah, Good. OK." On the plus side, it was only 29 minutes. Still, I found myself skipping a lot of these. Other than Help Me, Ronda this is forgettable. Who do I write to about including it on this list!!??

Like eating sugar out of the bowl

I can take a bit of the Beach Boys but it was never meant for me.

6/10 Highlights: Help Me, Rhonda She Knows Me Too Well

Hard to get excited about these guys. They don't give you a ton of opportunity to groove in with like 150 songs in 29 minutes.

Most of the vocals are about an octave too high, “Bull Session” was obnoxious

I hate the bubbly, sunny sound of this brand of California music. The songs all blur together, it sets my teeth on edge. The only reason this isn’t a 1 is because they do a great job with the harmonies. Otherwise I hate pretty much everything here.

That's not my taste in music - I can't do anything with the music

Close to a 1, I really don't enjoy this sound very much. I'll let it have a 2 because the vocal harmonies do sound very cool, but then it's just a repetitive and creepy surf album

Trallvänligt men tråkigt.

Honestly, I just find The Beach Boys boring. The occasional song is fun - I enjoyed Help Me Rhonda, for instance. But a whole album’s worth is waaaaay too much. The lyrics are dippy (will my kids be proud / or think their old man is really a square?!?) and the beat is just unrelentingly bouncy. RIP Brian Wilson.

Can't dig it. I'm sure it was somewhat of a new sound at the time, but it sounds like worse buddy holly to me; most songs have only one thing going on. Do you wanna dance, Help Me Rhonda, I'm so Young are OK.

I used to like I Get Around when I was kid - and even then it sounded really old and like something that my Dad would have listened to when he was a kid. Totally dated sound and themes throughout. Got boring very quickly due to each song sounding more or less the same as the last. Nice harmonies, but then so do a lot of bands. Not sure why this album would be selected as a “must hear” unless you were around when it was released and it has sentimental value. 2/5 Standout tracks; None, they all sound the same. If i was hard pushed; She Knows Me Too Well sounds the least same-y as others I guess.

I probably missed the Zeitgeist on the BeachBoys, but this album is so bland to me. No interesting song, no bangers.

Gear: Abyss DIANA MR Artwork: 😃😃😃😃😃 Production (Remastered): 🧏‍♂️📏🕰️ Music: 😒🎵🔁 Rating: 🏖️🏖️/5

I think I'm in the minority here but I just don't see anything that big or exciting going on. Couldn't largely distinguish each song

I found it a bit boring if I’m honest and I don’t really think Pet Sounds is all it’s made out to be either.

This is a Beach Boys album full of Beach Boys songs that sound like Beach Boys songs.

Coś strasznego

I really wanted to like this, and there’s a lot of beach boys music I love. But this one really falls short for me. I don’t even love the beach boys style with surf rock, but I love that they sneak in some thick ass harmonies and unique phrasing. On first listen this album doesn’t live up to that hype for me.

2.5 - an ok album that sings the same song about girls over and over again. But the harmonies are always top notch

I cannot connect to this in the slightest. It is SO long before my time, and it is music made for a population and community that I am not a part of, and that I do not romanticize is the slightest. In short, it is nigh unlistenable.

Meh. Product of it's time, sappy teenager music that I have no particular interest listening to these days.

Smells like hair tonic, milk and a hint of horny teenage desperation.

I am a self-professed lover of the mid-sixties teeny bopper pop music. The first few Monkees albums, which I adore, are the best reflection of that. But what The Beach Boys did here is drivel! There’s no substance, and the lyrics are dull. The only saving grace, except for “Help Me, Rhonda,” is their beautiful harmonies. I was bored on the whole, but the harmonies made this 28-minute album bearable. The Beach Boys, Goodbye!

boah, das ist ganz schön alt

Most of The Beach Boys sound is very dated to me. That is the case for their album Today! It’s perfect music if you are “going to a sock hop,” or wanting to ask your gal to “go steady.” Listening to this in 2025 as an adult is not something I would do on my own accord. For me, it does not translate to current day and I have no nostalgia for most of their music. I had a short stint with their music in my junior high days but that was about it. Nothing against their talent and musicianship. I just don’t particularly care to listen to their music. This is a 2 rating. 2/5

These boys have some great albums, not sure this is one of them

Reasonable, starts to all sound the same.

There's traces of something I could almost like

Very old beach boys singing quartet stuff. Don't think they ever sang about surfing which defeats the point a bit, maybe at the time they thought that was a huge experimental shift in their sound. Didn't recognise any of them except help me Rhonda and even then that was from a podcast taking the piss out of it. It's all a bit pointless isn't it, it sounds like old beach boys, like the other old beach boys. As dated as anything could sound and completely uninteresting. 1.5 for not being distracting.

It feels like we always have Beach Boys. This one went by in a flash, and was absolutely fine. Managed to work to it, no issues. Forgettable - Pacific Ocean Blue has been my favourite sort-of Beach Boys album, as it had more of an edge. Inoffensive this.

I can see how this album foreshadows "Pet Sounds", but that doesn't make it worthy of this list.

t'was boring as, there be way better beach bois

I have respect for the beach boys, but God this is one of the gayest albums I've ever heard. You got Beatles and the Stones dripping in sex appeal, then you got the Beach Boys and they make you wanna pull your pants up

Boring, both in music and lyrics.

Meh. I'm not generally a fan of the beach boys, although even I can appreciate that Pet Sounds is a work of genius. This is...not that. Pros - some lovely harmonies. Help me Rhonda and When I grow up are well constructed songs Cons - it's just so saccharine and childish. All the songs feel like a 12 year old talking about the world. It just left me cold. The whole thing is quite repetitive, and i have no desire to go back to it. You get the impression that some early 1001 albums were more interested in the stature of the artist than the actual output, and this is a perfect example. Is this really more worthy than 100s of similar works? Proportionally, how many of these 60s and 70s albums actually stand up? So far, not many.

Average. Would not listen again

Pleasant ballads but fairly forgettable.

Not my thing. I like some of Brian Wilson's stuff but not this early, I suppose. (12 known/19 new)

This one is real old sounding and pretty dorky, but also sounds representative/well done for the style. Will I listen to again: 5%

It’s The Beach Boys as you think they are. I respect them for their time and place but this is just standard Beach Boys.

2 out of 5. Damn, I'm really picky...

just did not vibe with this at all

God damn. I hate The Beach Boys. I get why some people like them but it all sounds like overly polished whiny as shit beach rock to me. Musically it’s a fine album but I just hate The Beach Boys

I won't deny The Beach Boys were, at the time, the most popular thing to grace the US and maybe the world, but how long did that really last? It's cheesy, corny and has aged terribly. I gave it a little time, but I just couldn't listen to the whole album. Same boring subject repeated. Feel like I'm at a 60s prom.

Never a fan of these lads. Too much annoying harmonies and squeaky clean California vibe. The fact that most of them weren’t surfers, and one died from drowning, makes me wish they chose a different name. Beached Boys? 2 stars cuz they remind me of my dad… a fan who loved harmony, but also couldn’t surf.

I want to get real madge about it, but I just can't. They're simply making music that I don't like

Radio slop for old people

Wasn't crazy about this but was part of my youth.

Famous songs are good, but the rest is pretty generic Standout songs: Help me rhonda Dance dance dance

I started out my life hating the Beach Boys, and they've slowly grown on me after many years. That said, this album is garbage, and sets them right back to square zero in my mind. I'll give them credit for Pet Sounds, but this one is just bad.

Squaresville. Just eat your damn fries and start working on pet sounds.

Wow, I really just don’t like this band. Like, I kinda get why people liked them, but the singing grates my nerves. It feels so saccharine that there’s something borderline creepy af about their sound.

people back in the day may have thought this was the shit but man does it sound goofy- and don't get me started on some of the lyrics

Pretty amazing to think that the incredible Pet Sounds came out a year after this - because this album is foul. This is the kind of shit teenagers in the 60's listened to in their cars at full volume to try and get pussy. Boring and whiny, the harmonies don't even do it for me. There was a few good songs yeah, but I really do have high expectations for The Beach Boys, and this sorely disappoints.

The Beach Boys music has aged like milk in the sun. Boring samey shit about holding hands with your 14 year old girlfriend. Keep it in the nursing home.

I like the Beach Boys a lot but not so much the slow songs, which this album has in spades
