Falls straight into the outdated 90s techno/acid house bucket. Overlong and underwhelming tracks means this LP is only good as a reminder of decades past, one that’s probably not worth too many revisits at that.

Von denen kannte ich immerhin „The Box“, weil es damals™️ auf MTV lief und das im Gegensatz zum Großteil der Rohrkrepierer auf dieser Platte irgendwie zügiger in die Gänge kommt. Mir geht es hier nicht anders als bei der meisten elektronischen Musik und ich frage mich, wo das hinwill. Auf Zeuch würde die Freude an der an sich ereignislosen Repetition sicherlich gleich verständlicher, was mehr über einen selbst als über die Musik aussagt. Aber man kann sich ja nicht vor jeder Elektro-Platte irgendwas reinziehen. [gähnt und kaut und fühlt sich an früher erinnert].

Meh. I don't dislike ambient music, I just don't see the point. You can't sit and listen to it. You can't dance to it, unless you're on acid, and it's too intrusive for me to have on while working. It would be fine, but the voice samples are very annoying.
The project has its high moments and is a fine background record. But it's also far too long and uneven in quality, interest, and genre.

Just because it’s British doesn’t mean it’s good or a “must listen to.” Sub-par techno.
Did not age well. I think in the right timeline and with enough drugs people would enjoy this, but I don't hear much to like in this.

This project so far has had its fair share of electronica in this playlist. Each has been in its own niche. This one fits in the "long and repetitive" niche. I laughed out loud when I read it was on a list of the 25 best dance albums ever, as I had spent a lot of the time listening to it thinking, "how would you dance to this?" Not that there aren't some cool things here. But I noticed that there was a vast difference between my feeling after listening to the entire album (minus 3 minutes, see below) and listening to 30 second samples of each track for a review. The first eight notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, for example, is brilliant. Hearing it repeated over and over for 9 minutes without ever moving on to another phrase would make me murderous. "Forever" was a good and hopeful start to the album for me. I liked the sound of it quite a bit. "I Wish I Had Duck Feet" was an interesting collection of sounds and percussion. Still liking the album although both tracks were overly long. "Sad but True" was where it started getting on my nerves. "Crash and Carry" was your standard '90's dance club beat, but I always found those boring and long. "Science Friction" had an interesting enough sound but like so much of this album, repeated ad infinitum. I liked the voice samples in "Philosophy by Numbers" but not much else. "Kein Trink Wasser" went on forever in a piano-pounding, nerve-fraying way. "Quality Seconds" then blared out of the speakers and I thought my music player had malfunctioned. Very jarring but mercifully short (if still repetitive). "Are We Here" went on for twice as long as the songs I've labeled "too long." And I will confess that I skipped about three minutes towards the end of the 12.5 minutes of "Attached." I was just feeling done with it. Did I miss anything?

I was feverish and had a headache while listening to this, which might have affected my reaction to it. Kind of like the time I binged Black Mirror while in the hospital recovering from surgery. Not a great idea. This just sort of made my head want to explode. 2 stars.
I honestly didn’t think the music could irritate me more than this album’s stupid title but it really outdid my expectations. Literal hatred: I refuse to believe the laudatory reviews about this overlong trudge of pretentious monotony can represent anything other than drug nostalgia.
First Listen. Pretty much good background music. Don't know if this one will grow on me with more listens. 2/5 for now.

Well, it finally happened. Took till the final 100 albums, but I got the same band on back-to-back days. I’ve had a couple times where the same band or artist is split up by one album between their entries, but this is actually the first time I’ve gotten the same band on consecutive days. And of all bands, it’s fucking Orbital. Why the fuck are there TWO Orbital albums on this list? Dimery, dude. Come the fuck on. Here’s the thing - if I’m being honest, I think I liked this Orbital album a smidge more than yesterday’s. But I’m sorry, one of them need to be punished as a one-star album, if for no other reason than punishment for there being two Orbital albums on this list, when in all seriousness, there should probably be zero. Absurd the oversights there are on this list, and I get TWO fucking Orbital albums back to back (I’m not annoyed at all, I’m sure you can tell).

Philosophy by Numbers was the first time since start of the album where I thought it could go somewhere lmao quality seconds were really the best stack of seconds on this project... had few moments in each +10min song, but overall weak for my listenening experience (1.5/5.0)

Soundtrack music. Could fit all scenes in a movie. The slow build. Walking away from an explosion. The revelation. The good guys. The bad guys lair. The climax. Truly a multifaceted album for music you will undoubtedly forget about once you exit the Theater.
This is mostly pretty boring, I mildly liked two songs off this…one them because it was under 2 minutes and had a more industrial sound the other I’ve already almost forgotten about.
“Crash and Carry” sounds like some Leftfield or Chemical Brothers I used to listen to while getting ready for a big night out in the 90s. “Quality Seconds” reminds me a little of the Prodigy; it might have been fun to dance to at a club. And unlike the rest of the songs, it is blissfully quite short. Other songs are background music with no hook and so forgettable. 2.5/10
Unfortunately, this is not at all my jam. Repetitive electronica is more noise than music to me. It becomes an unpleasant chore to listen to an hour of it. I suppose if you're in a club and you're not critically listening, this album could be evaluated along lines like innovation and interest in the layering. And maybe some of this was new and exciting over thirty years ago. Today, it's just straight out boring. Sorry. My experience of this was unpleasant. One star, and I would give it less if I could.
Het eerste nummer heet 'Forever' en dat is een vrij accurate beschrijving van hoe lang deze plaat lijkt te duren. De vorige keer klaagde ik al over de eindeloze herhaling bij deze artiest. Dus waarom zou ik zelf niet in herhaling vallen: hier val ik dus echt bij in slaap. Tracks van tien minuten zonder enige vorm van variatie, waarom? Als het dan toch zo achterlijk lang moet duren, heb ik liever George Harrison en Eric Clapton die staan te improviseren of zo. Niet dit soort beresaai gehakketak.

I just really consistently dislike most electronic type music and this is no exception. It actually made me feel quite anxious, I think there’s something about certain like frequencies or beat patterns that come up often in this genre that kind of make my heart race uncomfortably or something, it genuinely makes me feel quite stressed at times and I had to fast forward through some songs. There were a few moments I found pretty cool but overall it’s not for me at all.

Even though I do like ambient and electronic music, I find this album incredibly boring, even for ambient. And for techno, it just lacks energy. There are a few okay-ish moments on this album, like on „Sad but True“ or „Crash and Carry“ But overall, this album does not seem convincing at all to me. It doesn't make me feel anything at all, really. Yet I would not consider it outright bad, as it is at least sufficient background music and the production is decent. Rating this album is kinda hard, as I'd give it 1.5 stars – not good enough for two stars, but also not bad enough to deserve only one star. I really felt torn between 1 and 2 stars whilst listening to the album. I think the 15 minutes of „Are we Here?“ were the final nail in the coffin. Don't get me wrong, I like long tracks, but something has to happen at least, not the same 2 to 4 bars repeating all the time. I couldn't even be bothered to listen to „Attached“.
Well produced album but I found a lot of the songs really dragged out way longer than they needed to, resulting in me getting pretty bored in the 75 minute length.
I'll keep this record in mind the next time I want to put on headphones and hear beeping noises for the next hour.

Including Orbital's Snivilisation in the list feels like a major misstep, as its historical relevance to the 90s UK rave scene doesn't justify a grueling, 75-minute listen that largely misses the mark. While "Sad but true" injects a unique, genuine underground rave energy and "Forever" starts and ends on strong notes, the rest of the tracklist quickly derails into a frustrating mix of mediocrity and outright irritation. From the baffling confusion of "Philosophy by numbers" to the amateurish feel of "Kein trink wasser" and the abrasive noise of "Quality seconds," the album suffers from a massive deficit in consistency and modern appeal. Ultimately, a couple of decent moments cannot rescue a project weighed down by so many skipped tracks, proving that just because an album is deemed "culturally significant" by a checklist doesn't mean it deserves a spot on your personal rotation.

Then you “gifted“ me the last two tracks on your album, clocking in at 15+ and 12+ minutes, respectively. I now must dock you a full star for crimes against humanity, and if it were possible, I would award you exactly ZERO stars for the 75 minutes I just spent in the ninth circle of aural Hell.

I was a senior in college in ‘94 when this album came out. Thankfully, I was too busy doing college things to have noticed it then. I remember going to a banging Halloween Party dressed as a sexy Asian cat. I was hot! I met some fool dressed like the Joker from Batman - and not the cool scary Joker, but some lame old-man version. Whatever. We got drunk and hooked up. But he was so self-conscious and weird he’d only go down on me IN full costume and makeup. And then he bailed before sex. What a loser. Like this album. I never heard from him again. Also, just like this album.

The Good: NOTHING The Bad: Everything The Ugly: … There are times that I really don’t understand the criteria for having bands represented on this list, and then there are times that I am really trying to understand why these bands have more then 1 entry… I will not repeat all those bands who are NOT represented on this list, or which bands should have more than 1 album… Orbital, together with several of the other useless electronic shit that is cast upon us via this list, is NOT something one needs to hear before one dies… well, that is not true, we should all be exposed to 1 album of electronic shit, so that we can all agree that it mostly is shit. Caveat, 1 album full of electronica is shit, 1 song might not be that bad… but this plink plonk garbage made me break my own rule of listening to an album all the way through—to consider that when I started this journey almost 2 years ago I was making myself listen to all albums twice, just to be certain my opinion wouldn’t change… 1*

Well... this is not much interesting. At least it's not horrible, but too slow and boring. Atmospheric? Of course. But the worst of atmospheric albums is that some take it as an exacerbation of boring music that does not go anywhere. It was cool as background music? At times, as at others this album also becomes a bit annoying. So, I don't have much to say, it's not an album I would ever listen to. And I won't ever repeat that musical experience. I haven't enjoyed it the least.

Orbital – Snivilisation (1994) On Day 59, Snivilisation was a massive struggle to get through. I was expecting something with an electronic funk energy, but it ended up sounding like a collection of boring, weak ringtones. I honestly cannot see why this was included in the "1001" list. It lacked any real momentum or interest, making the 75-minute runtime feel like a total chore. It’s easily a 1/5—completely failed to hit the mark.

Ah, my old friend, electronic music. I have a love/hate relationship with electronic music. Some I really, really love, but most of it just bores me or irritates me. Orbital are, or is it is, more on the boring, annoying side. I tried to listen to it, I did….Well, not really. I did listen to it once, and I realized pretty quick a second listen wasn’t going to push me more to their side of thinking, but here I am writing this while bleeps and blorks are ringing in my ears with a tinny-sounding fake drum. What is interesting about this album is that Orbital released it right at the start of the Criminal Justice Act, launched by the United Kingdom to crack down on illegal raves. While Snivilisation isn’t a direct response to the act, like the Prodigy’s Music for the Jilted Generation seemed to be, Orbital did release a track called Are We Here? (Criminal Justice Bill) which consists of four minutes of silence. To me, that sounds like heaven after listening to Snivilisation. Maybe I’m being a little harsh. The title, Snivilisation, is badass, and standing up against the man is cool. These days, it seems like too many people want to cozy up to the man. But I digress. Most of the songs sound like the theme songs for TV shows in the 2000s. They are just kind of there. It may be an important album for Electronic music, but it isn’t to me.

The songs in this album were pretty long, especially the last two. Overall, pretty meh album, nothing really exciting and very repetitive stuff. I want to say that if you've listened to one of the songs, you've listened to them all, but they are slightly different, although the main idea remains. I am not a huge fan, nor am I a middle-sized fan, so I am rating this album pretty poorly, but I do understand that there are people who would enjoy the repetitiveness of it.
I just think that this isn’t meant for album listening really. It’s meant to be played in a set at a venue where everyone is off their rocker anyways so don’t mind that it’s not much more than a simple beat. But that meant that it wasn’t exactly a fun listen for me.

If hell is real, then this is on the jukebox there. Unless you are a club DJ and need to know what backing music you have to work with, who would ever choose to listen to this? When would they listen to this outside of a dance club or rave? 1001 albums to listen to before you die and this was picked? Seriously? The end of the first song made me feel there were bugs in my ears. They named themselves after the M25, think this album really captures that vibe- annoying! Jag gjorde det! Jag tog mig igenom det. Herregud vilken resa. Nästan att jämföra med nattåget mellan Nordmakedonien och Serbien. Nej, det är är verkligen inte musik som är skapad för mig. Jag känner det ganska direkt, men första låten får mig att tro att det ändå skulle kunna bli en helt okej upplevelse. Lite småmysiga ljud som studsar runt, även om det redan här blir repetitivt. När tredje låten spelas håller jag på att bli galen. Jag befinner mig genast på ett smutsigt och trångt rave, med en massa folk som jag inte känner och en känsla av att jag utan tvekan har blivit drogad. Det ska den verkligen ha skivan, den förmedlar en sinnesstämning på ett ganska bra sätt. Men jag vill fan inte vara där. I låten "Philosophy by Numbers" mår jag som sämst. Jag var på riktigt nära att behöva skrika högt när dom där rösterna upprepade 'technology' och 'philosophy'. Lite av en mardröm att återbesöka det nu när jag skulle hitta vad det var dom tjatade om. Att det här följde Blonde on Blonde kan inte ha hjälpt Snivilisation, men kan inte tänka mig att jag hade kunnat ge den något annat betyg oavsett scenario. Bäst: "Forever"

aw shit here we go again, another obscure uk electronic album
It’s an hour and a half of bizarre on hold music (except for Quality Seconds which was just weird in the mix of the rest of the songs) and bad techno. It’s just… nothing. I don’t know why it’s on the list but I don’t want to hear it again.
Some relatively solid background music mixed with some truly annoying tracks. Hovering around 1.5 but the last half hour was a chore so I’m giving it a 1.

Never let it be said that I can't handle a long song. But these just got boring. It was more or less just what I expected, but so many others have done it better. Sorry, can only be a 1
Track one started so promisingly and I thought I might just enjoy this album. But no, it descended into everything I expected. Endless ambient loops on repeat, with just a few little spikes of something different.
Oof. This stuff is just painful for me. I saw Sad but True and was really hoping for something based off Metallica. It wasn't. Sad but true. Much like this album. 1

Electronic music has a low ceiling for me. This has brief moments of good music surrounded by a bunch of annoying crap. And as an album is it LONG. On the border of 1 and 2 stars, dropping to 1 because of the stupid title.

‘90s British electronic music is far from my usual listening habits. Occasionally, you stumble upon a hidden gem in albums like these—but not this time. Once again, it ended up as background music.
In a nutshell: more ambient techno. I wonder if any Gen Xers who went to warehouse raves in the 90s are having flashbacks by listening to this. Like Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works, it's meant to be background music. But that's where the comparison ends. Because it's not IDM. All I hear is random vocal samples with bleeps and bloops. Yes, it's not my thing. Overall: 2/10

I liked some of the songs on the album but a lot of them had sounds mixed in that just doesn't vibe with me. It take me out of the mood and song completely.
Tedious tedious tedium. Gave up after a quarter of the way through. Was hoping it would improve but no joy. Went to Spotify and played something from my own playlist which I knew i would enjoy. Instantly better

If you looked at my genre reviews, you'd think I hate electronic music. I've yet to rate a single one above 2 stars. I'm convinced either those who curate these lists understand something about EDM that I don't, or they have terrible taste in EDM. Most video games have more interesting and less repetitive soundtracks than this.

Running out of things to say about this shit so I’ll say this again: it was a mistake to let the English find out about any drug except for speed, smokes, and alcohol.
it always sucks to see jobs get outsourced overseas. spare a thought for the poor Pentagon officer who lost his job designing audio to be played as part of psychological warfare campaigns because these English lads were willing to do it cheaper.
Not for me
Shortest song on this album I may listen to again. The rest of have too many seconds. If someone asked what year this was made I would’ve nailed it. And that’s not bragging.
Really didn't like this. Can't see any artistic merit in it.
Nothing against these guys, but I have no idea why this album is on the list. There was nothing to remember. There was lots to forget, including the insufferable repetition of lyrics about philosophy, prodigal sons, and freak shows.
I don't know how any electronic music made it to this list. But there is a lot of repetitive, generic trash on this list. And this is peak generic trash.
What is this author's obsession with electronica? I've listened to more electronica 400+ albums into this project than I have in my lifetime previous. This is repetitive, soulless and nothing I would ever choose to listen to.
Désolé, pas pour moi ce disque. Je l’ai écouté une fois au complet, puis une 2e fois plus rapidement le lendemain matin pour voir si ce n’était pas qu’une mauvaise journée. Je dois me rendre à l’évidence : pas pour moi. Je souligne quand même mes 2 préférées : « Crash And Carry » et « Kein Trink Wasser ».

Back to the unfamiliar, which is nice! However, this album was a bit of a tough listen. I’m sure in the mid-nineties this was very new and boundary pushing but to modern ears it sounds like someone who is new to the genre and is cramming as many samples as they can into most songs. At times it was a pretty hard listen. The highlights were the more ambient tracks where less is more.
My annoyance towards the list and even some hate towards the creator of the list grows a lot, when I hear albums like this. I can't and won't listen to the British DJs. Their albums are full of crap. I got it after I've listened to 3 of them from this list. Now I think I got through more than 10 of them. Of course everybody is allowed to have preferences, but stuff like this album should never belong to this list. Get this off. 1.5/5.
As a society we need to stop enabling this.
I can't think of a time when this would be something I want to listen to. Not catchy or groovy enough to want to dance, not chill enough to put on in the background, not interesting enough to focus on. And some of the songs really drag on for way too long.

Actually unlistenable
I want my 75 minutes back. I mean it. Why did I have to listen to this? What cultural impact does this album have? Not much. What about the quality? It's mid. This album is mid. It is yet another boring, long-as-hell 90s British electronica album. I literally don't even feel like writing a ton for this one. Just read my review of Haunted Dancehall by the Sabres of Paradise. That's how I feel about this album but to a marginally lesser extent. This shit is still uninteresting and unimportant. Haunted Dancehall is still worse, but these albums are way to similar for both or even one of them to be on the list. And of FUCKING course, there are TWO Orbital albums on the list! They barely even deserve one, especially when great artists like MF DOOM, Louis Armstrong, and Weezer don't have shit on this list! I'm upset. 1/5.
This is a new artist to me, so expectations going into it… Oh, it’s electronic dance music, that explains why I’m not familiar with these guys. It’s fine background music, I guess. I have definitely found that this genre is not my cup of tea, so it goes.
Huh, wanted to like this more, but after a song or 2 it wasn't even holding my attention in the periphery.

So many sounds! And all at once! Got kinda annoyed on my hour drive. Didn’t hate Kein Trink Wasser, it had something going for it. The rest? Nah! Too busy to be background music and not catchy enough to make me wanna dance or move in any kind of way

Ten tracks, seventy-five minutes, and an infinite supply of bleeps and bloops, all arranged as if endurance itself were the point. Snivilisation wants to pass off sheer length as profundity, but most of it sounds like studio-bound knob-twiddling in search of a reason—oh right, drugs. The duo’s techno maximalism collapses under its own weight, with ideas stretched so thin they become ambient wallpaper for people who think staring at oscillators counts as enlightenment. “Science Friction” almost works—the tempo perks up, the electronic clutter briefly coheres—but one tolerable track doesn’t justify this much sonic sprawl. Less civilization, more self-indulgence.
I assume you have to be off your tits to enjoy this, because listening to it sober on a Wednesday morning, it is utter garbage. Couldn't finish it

I couldn’t listen to this … straight up trash.
While listening to this, there were fleeting moments when I was reminded of ambient music in various video games - but without the joy and excitement of actually playing one. Apparently Orbital DID appear on a few games, so perhaps they should've done a full career change and leaned as far as they could into making soundtracks. Because listening to their music on it's own is not enjoyable. At all.
Before listening: I guess with 1001 albums there's going to be a lot of artists I don't know. Snivilisation is another one. Released in 1994, it looks like a pop rock alt album to me, based on the cover. I don't even know what to expect here. After listening: Electronic instrumental. I got the hell out of there pretty fast.
