Reviews (page 7 of 7)
strange bc I like the vibe of the album and it's not painful to listen to, I just dont think any of the songs are good -- wouldn't listen to any of em again. 5/10
4/10 - Kinda bad overall. I liked some of the instrumentals but her voice did not really do it for me. Seems to be a consistent thing with some of these albums. I liked a few songs but Flower absolutely caught me off guard.
This should have been right up my street but it wasn’t. A track would get me interested but the next one would lose me. I want to give it a 2.5. Disappointing. Prefer PJ Harvey any day. Oh and the number of guys on here mentioning the nipple is truly pathetic
Do not care for her voice
Bad length. Bad music. Idc about this.
not great
Obviously I've heard of Liz Phair over the past 30 years but I couldn't have named one of her songs. I didn't make it all the way through this. Her voice isn't very dynamic, the songs are just a little boring. I don't get the draw.
Walking through midtown
Didn't like this one. I can only assume it's popularity is based on being a early version of better female fronted grunge/alt from the early 90's. Better listen to early Hole or even 4 non blondes.
The album is okay, none of the songs particularly stood out for me but if it was playing in the background somewhere it would be fine. Went 2 star as no stand out song. I imagine it was a stand out with having such a strong female voice and lyrics in 93.
Too much filler. The legit songs are okay but there is a lot of just single chord stroking here.
Oof! Terrible. So out of tune that I couldn't be arsed to listen to the lyrics.
I found her voice pretty nondescript so wasn’t really listening to the lyrics until Flower where I realised I’d maybe misinterpreted everything before it. However, I think I’m most drawn to the instrumental and production when listening to albums so as this was quite bland in that regard it’s not one I’m going to go back over.
Sounds a bit like a less good Sheryl Crow.
This sucks. It just doesnt go anywhere. Her music is just so tired sounding. Flower is just really uncomfortable to listen to.
Helt okay men kinda tråkigt o intressant sound. Första sången va nice allt annat kinda meh
I had not listened to Liz Phair before. Well worth the discovery.
Terrible edgy lyrics
eh... 2.5/5
# 40 : Yeah.. Nah... Not terrible, but not great either, Not influenced by her, sorry not my thing. Flower - Wow!
Never heard of Liz Phair before however she provides an album full of 90s indie "girl" grunge vibes, with some good stories told throughout. It is a long album, and at times it felt like a little bit of a slog to get through it. Best: 6'1" Worst: Shatter Note: Had to listen on YouTube as the full album was not made available on Spotify.
Not really my style
Meh
I should like it, there is nothing wrong with the album. For some reason I can't explain; I don't like it.
annoying voice
D-i-v-o-r-c-e
I don't get why this is on this list. Very blah and superficial.
I kinda like the lo-Fi effect but it does come across as a cut-price Sheryl Crow due to it. I certainly don't think it deserves all the plaudits (I guess those are to do with the Feminist angle) but it's ok to listen to in the background
Meh, grunge
1 2?
Een soort Courtney Love vermengd met Sheryl Crow. Het resultaat vind ik: zeurderig.
I mean she's no Sheryl Crow am I right? Nah she was alright. Kinda that cliche early 90s girl with a guitar singer songwriter vibe. But she must've been one of the first that made that a thing. But man she sure like to song about wanting to bone. Like alright I get it
My feelings for this record fluctuated as it went on. It's a bit too drawn out for what it is and I honestly don't get the hype. It's decent slacker/indie rock, but even good slacker/indie rock bores me at times. I don't know, it's OK, but not something I would go back to anytime soon.
I feel like I should like this more than I do.
I don't know what to say here. I guess she's pretty angry about some stuff, huh? This whole thing is very dated. The production is 90s trash, her voice is pretty terrible, and the lyrics are just a single gong banged repeatedly. I appreciate the semi-revolutionary status of the thing but it's just not good.
The lyrics are fine if a little 'pulled out for the diary', raw and explicit. The music though is generic indie with no real grace or even melody. Liz can't even be bothered to make a racket to bolster the anger in her words. All a bit shrug for me.
Probably going to be shit. Update: was pretty shit.
Singer/Songwriter stuff. The songs are fine - not brilliant but not terrible. The music is rhythm driven rather than melodic, but again that is OK. The singing is monotone and off key most of the time and that is not OK. I guess that this was a success due to the songwriting, because it surely can not be because of the performance.
This would be enjoyable if it was like 23 minutes long. Instead it is 57. best / only good songs: never said, fuck and run, Stratford-on-guy
Grunge-y, overall just kind of a downer it felt like. Not my speed.
Debuting with a lot of fanfare, and bringing a lot of meh to the table. Unless you're into pseudo-riot grrrl monotones, give this one a pass.
Not bad, but didn't do much for me
More like 2.5, but I wasn’t feeling this.
Pretty challenging listen for me.I liked some of the interesting/ strange sounding harmonic stuff with the guitar and vocals. I feel like the songwriting is better than the performance and recording. They recorded guitar first and maybe that’s why it sounds like the rhythm section is kinda shaky. It sounds like there’s a better version of this album that can be made. 1.5
These songs all sounded like sloppy scratch demos to me, the playing is terrible and nobody took the time or effort to produce or write parts. All the guitar is just power chords and the drumming sucks and I don’t think the songwriting is interesting enough to cover that up
This was like listening to someone do a shitty open mic set. No thanks
I never got into her music, and now I remember why. I really didn't like this.
Enjoyable listen but a lot of ups and downs. Some songs are absolute BANGERS that make you feel invincible while others are below average breakup songs. Not a big fan of the interludes as well, think the album as a whole could be structured better. All that said, great vocals and will definitely add some songs to my playlists (but won’t listen to this album in full ever again)
Sometimes a sweary Shania Twain, sometimes a lo-fi Alanis Morrissette. Are the songs any good? Overall, it's just not that interesting and 18 songs is far too many. Either overpolished (the Shania ones) or half-baked ideas for songs (the Alanis ones). I didn't realise her alt music roots and connections were so strong, its so MOR. In a fair world, Aimee Mann would be a household name for the albums she put out in the 90s.
Angsty feminist punk with some cool songs
Interesting at its best
Meh.
Not very exciting.
Don't love her voice, and a fairly boring album. Did have some catchy guitar bits.
I didn't really care for the album. I made it through it without skipping any songs. I was not previously aware of the album or the artist. I am not quite sure how to describe the music. It really isn't punk or grunge but there are elements of those genres. It certainly is indie music. I am not sure why this is on the list. No need to listen to it or revisit any of the songs again.
she sounds like a county vocalist, her vocal style doesn't match the music at all. 75% of the songs don't lead to nothing, they are built just like snippets. all in all, this is a generic 90's alt rock album. kinda boring, wished for it to end. the only good thing is the semi-distorted guitar, it is very nice.
Sedate. Odd.
Sorry @ women this wasn't all I expected it to be, that being said there is a lot to enjoy about this album, I just wasn't interested in all of it. Felt like it dragged on for too long and didn't have enough payoff. 2.5/5
I see that lots of folks love this album but it simply did not resonate with me.
Amerikansk 90’er indierock, singer/songwriter, udmærket lyrik, lidt for meget larm
:-(
yeah nice, but boring
Boring and way too long.
I listened to this album once before, because of general recommendations that this is a good album. I did not like it then, and not much more now. Phair's drone singing, and the lyrics keep me from wanting to hear more from Phair. I'm done.
Interesting sound - low production. Sounds like a guitar plugged strait into an amp and recorded. A bit dull.
Ok
Meh
With some of these albums I don't have the slightest clue why they might be on here. This is one of those albums. This was a complete waste of time. Not interesting in any kind of way and not really good in any way either.
Middling tunes let down by half the vocals being completely out of tune.
Ehhhhh. I'm sure it means something to a different audience, but it's not my jam.
not a fan
Meh. That is all.
I'm a little underwhelmed
Typical 90s shite. Awful decade
i really did not like the voice it was incredibly irritating but i did like the music so the songs without so much singing i enjoyed however the voice was just plain bad. i woukd give a 5/10 and a 2.5 but i cant so i’ll round down
Pretty boring. Ok I guess. I don’t get why it was acclaimed.
Angsty guitar-driven singer-songwriter stuff. Grungy power-chord transitions but not that heavy. Not a lot of standout tracks, and the bored-sounding vocals got tiring after a while.
super meh
DNF. 90s rock isn’t really for me I guess. But it was nice to try.
Seems like a powerful female record. Her voice wasn't great to listen to. Not my thing, but I can see why people would like it.
Bloated tracklist, but there are some real gems in there too. I see why it's on here even if I don't think its a "great" album. I just wish it was more refined.
Eh
Tuneful in places, out of key singing in others.Wouldn’t listen again. 2*
Not good. But not too offensive
Generally acceptable 90s indie rock. Very of its era. Very potty mouthed. Too long.
Meh, wasn't overly interested.
Her more famous songs on this didn't really grab me. I most enjoyed Mesmerizing, Divorce Song, and Stratford-on-Guy.
This isn’t my sound. But it sounds like a reasonable version of that sound. 5/10
No guardé ninguna canción.
Mostly 1-stars but Girls! Girls! Girls! and Gunshy are honestly pleasant to listen to.
Terrible album cover
Its ok
Not for me. 1/5
All of these songs sound the same and are just so blah AND the album is soooooo long. This was not a good rainy Monday morning at work listen.
favs: 6'1, glory, mesmerizing
Hot trash
Mmmm no conecté.
1 - this sucks
KANYE IS A MAGA PIECE OF VILE UNMEDICATED TRASH
Really unique voice, I like the vocals particularly in Glory. It's very reminiscent of the era it was made in, the guitar is bolder, but nothing particularly stands out to me, except for the lyricism. Further I listen into the album, the more monotonous it sounds. The lyrics of course are quite poetic but nothing else really invokes any interest in me. It's a lot of the same stuff, with not technicality or expertise. Politically, very active and that I think makes this album significant, but it doesn't make it necessarily good. It's listenable and it's enjoyable but it's nothing more than that.
I recognize the album cover, but don't know if I've heard anything from Liz. Let's see; I'm usually skeptical about albums I'm unaware of. They never live up to the hype... maybe it's me. First song, it's very much on par with that grunge/hippy fusion of the 90s. I'm not enjoying this album.
The world is so full of wonderful things, not least of which are people so different from me that they listened to this album and gave it five stars. Their reality is so different than mine that I can't really imagine it. That said, this fucking sucked.
wasn’t my style
No thanks
“Mom can we listen to hole?” “No, we have hole at home” The hole at home:
Not for me.
I got a few songs in and realized I was actively disliking every song so I stopped.
Pop. Kind of had the same dour mood in every song. Not for me.
Just really bad
She's trying to be edgy but listening in 2026 it's pretty cringe. I don't know. Not really for me. 3/10
i think this is my version of what Dana hears when i turn on Saves the Day
Bleh. .7
What a shit album. Just absolute hot garbage. I’m convinced that Liz Phair got noticed simply because she was this alternative figure in a time where we wanted more Kurt Cobains and Courtney Loves. So many artists got signed because of the Nirvana era in the 90s. And a lot of those bands needed to vetted. Liz Phair is one of those artists. Such lack luster songs. Such a waste of time. Next.
Jesus christ generic ass
1/5
Pfffffff - 1.5/5
???
Personal opinion but I can’t stand the 90’s alternative genre style of song writing or singing. I don’t think Liz can sing well and the songwriting plays more pretentious than deep
This is ass Bad vocals and just some guitar strumming accompanying? If it's some cool response to something, it could've just as well been good music. 1/5
Not for me! 1
sings very off
Drab music with the most boring version of the sounds of 90s alt rock: stripped back, lo fi, basic chords strummed at a medium pace - it all just sounds gray and overcast. That's the mood she's going for and she achieves it well, it's a long slog through 18 lyric centered lovesick bitterly let down songs. Tedious.
Seems I am not the best audience for this one. Can live without it.
1.5/5
Too edgy, too monotonous, too long
Not my thing. Just nothing about these appeals, it's inoffensive musically and is removed from any genre I like.
Not crazy about her sound and music.
Not for me
Not everyone needs to make an album.
Voice. Bad. Tried to enjoy it but nope.
this feels like such an insane pick from liz phair's catalogue. most of it is so bland
Sorry
Bewonderingswaardig. Zo kan je eens No need to argue van The cranberries proberen. Nou Kenneth, kijk eens even op https://bestsellingalbums.org/. Liz rept vrij expliciet over seks.
Admittedly, this album was a struggle for me to get through. It just felt very flat. Lots of unnecessary chord changes and no real vocal dynamic. Just really not for me.
Guyville wasn't far enough. And could we find somewhere without a recording studio?

I honestly don’t understand what people see in this album. I’m not someone who cares much about vocal skill, but I just can’t stand her voice or the way she sings. I tried to listen to the whole album, but I couldn’t get past three songs. For the first time ever, I’m giving an album a 1 out of 10.
Who? Wikipedia says the music genre is Indie Rock / Lo-Fi, and of the two I say that lo-Fi is the most apt. Her singing is so miserable, (and so are the songs), that she should hook up with Morrissey.
I really hated this. Did not get the appeal at all.
Very whiny voice without great music either.
I know she was huge and won grammys and all but this album sounds amateur and sloppy. Album closer was really grating in particular.
1.5
Not for me. "Indy" vocals are, in my opinion, generally terrible. This is just that. Crappy over-drive, 4 chord, guitar parts are what this is made out of. Won't listen again and wish I didn't this time.
I do NOT know how this make Rolling Stones Top 500? A what seems like an endless listing of tracks delivered in a dreary unwavering monotone without a single hook to be heard. It's like she tried to capture the magic of Jagged Little Pill but failed miserably. The only redeeming feature are the lyrics and if that's the only attraction you may as well read poetry instead.
Terrible singing, bad instrumentals, generic sound on every song. Just a waste of an hour.
I honestly started to wonder why this album is on the list. The songs are boring, the sound is bad, and nothing about it caught my interest.
The album before this one was The Go-Go's "Beauty And The Beat" and I feel like the same pondering goes here; "I get that for journalists it's important to differentiate for the listener, but these labels have just grabbed so hard!" This is pop music from a singer/songwriter who decided to use electric guitar instead of acoustic, that's it. I mean "critical acclaim for its ability to combine indie rock and lo-fi music" for fux sakes! This sounds like another Sheryl Crow or K.D. Lang to me, no offense ment to either of these artists, this is just music I've absolutely no interest in. I mean Bob Dylan and all the rests of the Country/Folk cvnts can fvck right off too. I'm getting quite irate with this damn list of "music to hear before you die", it seems more and more it's about the sales achieved and not the music captured. I've said on multiple occasions that I don't care for lyrics, which means lots of these records have been utterly pointless exercises in literary examination and makes me feel like many music journalists concentrate on the text instead of the actual music. Vocals can be a strong instrument, while the contextual part of them doesn't have to mean a thing and still aurally important.
quite literally made my ears bleed😍 seriously wth is this it feels like the album of a 14 year old girl in her emo phase that her daddy paid to release bc it is absolutely dreadful
How is this so high on The Rolling Stones list?! I mean it’s not the worst thing I have ever heard but it is no where near the best either. It’s like if The Breeders were bored and ignored. The constant guitar riff that is consistently in like every song go annoying after like 3 songs. Her voice started to become like nails on chalk the longer it went on with how bored she sounds. I don’t know if it’s because she can’t sing or just genuinely didn’t want to make this album. I liked the song where she talks about being a blowjob queen and fucking dogs or some shit idk. 2/10
Disturbing lyrics. Her other stuff was better.
Nope
Kinda boring and not particularly good, one might even call it bad actually
Felt like going to a Highschool’s musical on day 2 when the B team was singing.
Not for me
Did not connect with this album at all. I kept almost getting into a groove, then something off about the songs would hit and I was left unsatisfied. As if there's one part that's out of tune or sounds wrong in every song. Very unfinished
Phew I was able to make it through this entire album. I was surprised that every song in this album sounded off tune, along with the prostitution sounding lyrics, I have no idea how this was approved. No wonder the cover was basically a half-naked person.
lyrics are so bad i cant even believe how this is so high rated. she writes like a b tier rapper
Dont get it, never thought she was more than meh
Exile in Guyville didn’t start off great. Not digging the vocals. This same thought carried through song 4. I do like Never Said. Where was this same energy in the first four songs? The songs directly after Never Said were more tolerable. Well, until Canary. Lost me again. I get Liz Phair is trying to do this sparse type sound but it’s just not working for me. This sounds like a demo tape and not actual sussed out material. I’m just perplexed by this album. The only song I like is Never Said. The rest of it is extremely forgettable and, quite frankly, annoying. I want this listening experience banished out of my head. This is a 1 rating. 1/5
Is it just me or she out of tune?
The music started good. Then she started to sing and things went south. She sings off key and out of tone.
Ei kolahda, en ymmärrä.
This one sucked in my opinion. Like the music itself was fine but her voice is awful she’s always flat I really didn’t enjoy this
Debut album. Indie / Lo Fi / Grunge. Not a fan of her voice. Clanky music. Poor production. Some good lyrics but also some awful too. Explain It To Me is terrible with a grating sound. Girls! Girls! Girls! Awful monotonous bilge. Tracy Chapman did female angst so much better. No redeeming track on this album. The one and only time I'll ever listen.
Musically really good, but unfortunately it was ruined by liz chair inability to sing.
Is she singing off-key? Lol. Or is it some 'singning-in-the-shower-or-yard' style that I didn't get? Looks like she wasn't even trying to sing something properly and with soul in it. Sounds a bit like bard/author music, and I usually like it, but not this time. It was really hard to listen even 5 tracks and there are 18. Very strange music, can't recommend.
What a boring album. Seems tame in the light of 2025.
This album is the sonic equivalent of the quiet girl in High School that has no friends. So, you go talk to her and try to befriend her. Then, you find out why she has no friends.
This femcel cannot sing.
Ni fu ni fa
I hate this album. It’s not the worst I’ve had on the list but definitely in the bottom 3
Nah. not my thing. I didn't find the music interesting at all.
Incel girl grunge. Didn’t care for it
Terrible - no idea why this album is on this list.
Didn’t speak to me
Annoying
Shit
Ugh
Not something i'd listen to again. The singers voice was very monotone, she may have a good voice, but i couldn't tell. It lacked emotion.
I like prog rock. One of the common sentiments I hear is "it's overindulgent, and records are unbearably long compared to other genres". Well. What the hell is there in this record that makes it need to be an hour long? Jesus christ.
This is just crap. What is this
Aggravating, sad and a bit crap
After listening to this album a few times, I find the musical elements quite good. It has a very indie, raw, and stripped-down production. However, the lyrics come off as juvenile to me. I understand that she’s making a cultural statement and challenging norms, but it seems her lyrics are praised more for their shock value. I can see how a younger generation full of angst might enjoy this, but to me, the lyrics feel immature.
Whinging, whiney, crap.
Sometimes there needs to be a zero stars option...awful
I'm fairly sure that Phoebe Buffay took inspiration from Liz Phair.
Hated the vocals, sorry.
Grating voice, nonsensical lyrics. ‘Shatter’ was the best song from this album, because she stopped singing for 3 whole minutes of instrumental bliss.
I dig girl rock and 90s music, but I did not enjoy this album nor Liz Phair overall. Her voice is mediocre and the music is meh. I dug some of the lyrics though. (I do want to give props to Liz for the album cover, a little nip is always hot.)
Ok so I never want to hear that again. Never heard of the artist or album and I was happier for it.
Mostly filled with boring songs with lackluster vocals. Some of the lyricism on display here is also not my favorite. One or two good tracks on here.
This album was sterile, and an absolute bore. It was only just under an hour, but with 17 tracks I kept hoping it would end so I could move onto something more substantive. I won't listen to this again. 1/5.
I get quite excited when an artist and album I’ve never heard of comes up on my list. I hope that it will be a gem which I have previously missed. But not this one. What a load of old tosh. I’m no expert on the Stones’s Exile On Main Street but see no similarity at all. Out of interest I googled the comparison reviews and to me they all seem to be academic highfalutin nonsense. Making it something its not.
wow i hated this a lot. something about this indie/bedroom sound really rubs me the wrong way
Meh.
I really appreciate that they started with a song about my height, that was cool. Some songs would start and I would like them, but were so repetitive that I was over it by the end. Never Said (Nothing) is a great name for a song where she says nothing. Some of it sounded demo-ish which I’m down with, but on Explain It To Me, the whole rhythm section fell apart for a couple bars and they didn’t think to do a retake??? That or they were playing some big brain polyrhythms. Also if you listened to the 2018 remaster what happened at the end of Strange Loop.
I have to agree with ben here that nothing really stood out. I saved Glory. I have nothing else to add here and no reason to give this anything than the 1 it deserves.
“In 2013, The New Yorker's Bill Wyman dubbed it "patently one of the strongest rock albums ever made", feeling that each song "reverberates powerfully". He described it as "arguably the quintessential example" of indie rock.” What?!?! The reviews of this album confuse me, because I found it very underwhelming. The best parts I could find were the piano parts on some of the songs, but the vocals are boring and amateurish, the songs don’t get me excited at all, and it’s just an overall dull album. Unfortunate as I’ve heard her name forever, never actually dig into it, but now that I’ve heard it, I’m not impressed. Listen again: nope Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: Canary (for the piano)
I honestly don't get why people like Liz Phair. She sings off key. Her voice is much worse than even the harshest, bad singing punk singers. At least with those singers, they can carry a tune. Which leads me to the second point of this album - there is no tune to most of these songs. Often, it's just howling. It's like listening to little children make up songs, only with irritatingly repetitive guitars in the background. The good news is that she got better over time and Whip-Smart is a pretty good record. This, however, is supposed to be her great indie album. No. It's not. Back in the 90s, she was hailed for her honesty. That translates to using the F word a lot and talking about sex. Sure, but does that make her music good? No, it doesn't. Instead, it's like listening to a low rent version of a off kilter Patti Smith album. I'm five minutes into listening to it again (so that you don't have to) and I'm already annoyed at it. Just... no.
Not for me
Monotone melodies. Flat voice. Don’t like.
La portada no está mal.
meh
Really did not enjoy this album. It's very nineties and for me the bad nineties. A strong pass from me.
Awful whining whinging voice
I'd give it a zero if I could. Out of tune, drones on. No thanks
It's a little bit Hole and a little bit P J Harvey. But the song writing isn't overly stellar in my opinion.
didnt love
sembra sempre un film, voce monotona
Wank
Eine knappe, bisweilen unerträgliche, Stunde postpubertärer Petitessen.
Some of the worst singing I've ever heard.
i expected there to be some sort of hidden one hit wonder on here but we weren't even treated to that. it's very shit.
Fuck the fucking fuck off
Didn’t really enjoy this one and felt like it was hard to get in to. The lady doesn’t do a bad job of singing or the production of the songs but it more so just wasn’t music that I find enjoyable. 3.5/10
It sounded terrible…
not worthly of this list
Not for me then, not for me now.
Not very good.
was not something I was into. Didn't sound good either. Just not for me.
bruh
Like Cheryl Crow but worse.
Distilled and concentrated 90's punkrock. If you want to know why a lot of pop songs from this decade took on the patina of angst and confusion, this is why. Although I grew up during this era and love the influence it has had on pop culture, it's a little too distilled for my taste.
I don't like this album much at all.
Her voice didn’t really sound good, so I couldn’t finish it.
wtf!!
Fences. Total garbage. She can’t sing.
Grim
Thought I would like this, but couldn't finish it to be honest
feminist grunge mixed with stonesy blues. nice
