Reviews (page 5 of 8)

Not particularly memorable. Still seemed like a fun yet somewhat generic 70s psychedelic rock album.

I don't personally feel T.Rex deserves two albums in the T1001, they are enjoyable and influential, but are they great? I know a few of these from their greatest hits, but "Metal Guru", while a fun song, is Monkies level pop music. "Mystic Lady" exposes their weaknesses, catchy but there are like 9 words and rest is "la la la". I didn't dislike a single song, but also, nothing really stands out either. Most sounded very similar. Not a single radio hit (at least that is STILL played today on classic rock). Good listening counts for an album as old as me. No song under 1M, with "Metal Guru" leading the way with 16M, "Slider" over 4M, "Telegram Sam" over 7M and "Ballrooms of Mars" over 6.5M (cool track with layered guitars!). 3 stars, above average but nothing that would push it to T1001 level as a must hear album.

Like many others, I can hear a lot of similarities with Bowie (and to me, some similarities with The Black Keys, but that's just my own bias speaking). Not my favorite, but I can see why this was included in the 1001.

I couldn't get much into this album. The singing isn't my favorite and the instrumentals were sometimes bare. A few tracks are really good though and I would definitely come back to this album.

не зашло..

This was good, and I was surprised by that after really despising Electric Warrior. Bolan the person comes through here. Turning to heavier riffs was a smart move. It feels like that is a comfort zone for him. Hugely influential, I feel like the Strokes just said - "here, let's just do this instead of come up with something ourselves." No real criticism of The Strokes per se, just an example (one of very many). Changed my idea of T. Rex and Bolan completely. Tight and well executed rock with a confident sheen, almost "campy" in it's self-deprecating assuredness.

Not that bad.

Man can this band write a hook. Sometimes I feel like they don't know where else to go with the song, but overall pretty good! Their vocalist does sometimes drone on a little. The backing vocals are really good! Actual rating...3.5. Liked Songs: "Metal Guru" , "Rock On" , "The Slider" , "Baby Boomerang" , "Buick McCane" , "Telegram Sam" , "Baby Strange" , "Chariot Choogle"

Good 3.5

A surprisingly enjoyable listen.

Another unknown-to-me album, and it was better than I expected.

The only thing I know about T. Rex is that they were inducted into the Rock Hall a few years ago. As far as their music goes, it’s alright. This is aggressively average but still very passable Rock music. It’s a little repetitive, a little formulaic, but still very easy to listen to and enjoyable enough. A few songs are more annoying than entertaining, but as a whole it’s not bad. I love the lead singers voice, and a few of the songs, including my favorite, “Telegram Sam”, remind me of my current favorite band, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (which absolutely should be on the list). I don’t really think this one is going to stick with me, but it was good. I would absolutely listen to more T. Rex. I think my favorite part of the band might just be its name. I want to be in a band named T. Rex. That’s some cool stuff. They have another album on here, but I can’t honestly imagine it’s going to sound much different than this one. So, yeah. Pretty average but still good. I liked it. On to the next one.

The fuck is a T. Rex

Enjoyable album. Catchy songs and easy listening. Pretty good. 3.5/5 Might listen again

Placeholder, will listen to it later.

Well, it definitely sounds ahead of its time. I would have never guessed 1972. '80s or '90s easy. It's hard for me to see this as glam-rock beginnings, but it's all there and it does make sense. It was a nice listen, I'm not sure I'll ever throw this on again. Nothing stuck. I found it hard to believe the singles were singles. Someone convince me otherwise, I might need perspective. 2.6/5

Led Zeppelin but indie!

I love Electric Warrior - that would/will get five stars no doubt. The songs on this album just aren't engaging in the same way. It feels like a redux, or a bonus disk of material that wasn't quite strong enough to make it on the debut. It's such a great sound though.

I've always liked T Rex while also finding them incredibly repetitive. Every T Rex song is saying a phrase in the same way many times over 3 simplistic chords. I'm so fond of this band but I find this quite grating after a while. I wish they had more stand out songs, as I really do love their sound when it's done right. 3/3.5,

I think I liked their other album better

A band I had heard of, but never heard. Somehow expected a much heavier, more punk sound. This was a pleasant bluesy kind of middle of the road rock sound. Nothing too earth shattering, could benefit from more basically range and dynamics.

I should probably like this more. It sounds a lot like some of my favorite artists, but it just doesn't feel right. I can't put my finger on what it's missing, but I never really care.

I love the sound of T. Rex. I don’t know them well enough to say this is the album that represents them the best but I enjoyed it.

Always enjoy some T Rex, but I'd still probably throw on Electric Warrior rather than this one if I'm in the mood, this is just more of the same with a few more mid tracks.

Telegram Sam and Metal Guru are classics, rest not so.

Pretty inconsistent. Some tracks were great (Buick Mackane was particularly good) whilst others just annoyed me. Even his voice went from soothing to agitating. The guitar work was overall pretty good with some of the riffs too.

I had never heard of T.Rex. I think my parents were too old to know them and I was too young. However, the album was a fun jam. I didn't recognize any of the songs, but I recognized the sound of a fun jamming this band.

Good album. Many low tempo songs with a couple of rockers. This album would benefit by using modern instruments and recording techniques. It did leave me wondering, however, which came first “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” or “Telegram Sam”.?

Pretty good but my take on this band was permanently damaged by the memoir of the album's producer, Tony Visconti, who was also David Bowie's most significant collaborator over the same years. Marc Bolan, the creative force behind T Rex, comes off as a petty bitch, especially in his relationship with Bowie, who seemed like a class act. More importantly, Bolan was always chasing what he thought the kids wanted to hear, while Bowie was expanding the kids' understanding of what they could want to hear. It's unfortunate but it seems like Bolan couldn't ever mature into a fully formed artist, fame and riches notwithstanding.

Interesting that we get two T. Rex albums in this collection, given how...ho-hum...I (and many other listeners, it seems) found their previous album "Electric Warrior". In fact, although I don't recall too many details from that other album, this albums almost seems like it could have been part of an expanded "Electric Warrior" double album, minus any sort of hit single like "Bang a gong/Get it on" (although they did their best to copycat "Bang" with "Telegram Sam"). It's also funny to read that this was considered a "heavy" rock album, mainly because it's striking in 2025 to hear how plodding each track seems, both pacing and lyrically, and you never really get to any sort of payoff with all the repeating refrains and riffs. I kind of liked "Spaceball ricochet" and the Zeppelin/Bowie mashup "Chariot Choogle" more than the others, but not by a lot, I'll admit, and I loved the *incredibly* kitschy video for "Buick Mackane"--it was as if a quartet of clearly clueless and surprisingly un-photogenic dudes decided to play air guitar/bass/drums/congos to a song they weren't even sure they knew the lyrics and tune to. Kind of like much of the album, come to think of it....

Not at all what I expected this band to sound like. For obvious reasons, before knowing either band at all, I somehow came to the conclusion that T. rex existed and then a member left and they became dinosaur jr. As a now big Dino Jr fan, I can finally confirm this is not the case. I like this when it sounds like Jack white and J Roddy and I don’t like it when it sounds like a knock off Bowie. Buick McCane and Telegram Sam rip, ballrooms and main man are boring. This is such a 50/50 album. There’s a song on here, not sure which, but he screams “ROCK!!!” Before the lamest solo ever and then it happens again in the same song. Very middle.

Fun album but nothing special

I know a lot of people are big on T. Rex and this type of music but it just doesn't do it for me. I didn't hate it but it didn't draw me in either. Neutral.

I had no clue what to expect, but this was surprisingly decent.

another bland album from the 70s

- Niet slecht, wel saai - 0 nummers toegevoegd aan MMMM

Ok album, nothing really exciting, but mildly entertaining. 3/5

Hvis det her var et David Bowie album ville det være langt fra det bedste, men som det er lyder det bare som David Bowie, og det er jo sygt imponerende

This wasn't really catchy or anything. I didn't think any of the songs would/could be banger singles, but it was good.

Solid glam rock but a bit too straighforward for me.

It seems glam was a reaction to the self-seriousness of the 60’s hippies and their psychedelic blathering, which is good because a lot of that sucks. But sometimes the reaction to something sucky is just something differently sucky, and I think that may be my take on glam rock. Very plastic and 70’s and teeny-booper and kind of lame. When you know that a movement is going to culminate in Kiss, it is hard to get too excited about it. Even though I’m not a fan of the genre, I can recognize that this is a pretty decent album. I prefer the ballads over the very samey rockers. But all in all it not a bad listen. But does this guy want to fuck a car? Cause it seems like he really wants to fuck a car.

Nothing outstanding, but pretty solid.

--Metal Guru...the backing vocals are fun --Mystic Lady...Bolan wants me to believe this is soulful. I don't --Rock On...this doesn't rock --The Slider...this is interesting. I like the guitar chug, the odd use of strings. Bolan's voice works best when it sounds too close; a vaguely (very?) creepy dude whispering in your ear at the bar --Baby Boomerang...a fun if generic groove. I do enjoy the way backing vocalists are used on this --Spaceball Ricochet...Marc Bolan has a distinctive but not great voice that can be elevated in certain situations. this is not one of those situations --Buick Mackane...This one rocks. I like this --Telegram Sam...this is just Get It On --Rabbit Fighter...blues guitar. gets more expansive towards the end. a little strange. I bet Axl Rose loves this --Baby Strange...pretty fun --Ballrooms of Mars...obvious Bowie reference is obvious --Chariot Choogle...whoa, this came out of nowhere and it's awesome! Lead with this! --Main Man...more diet Bowie

j’ai pas tout écouté mais c’était sympa. Je dirais pas que c’est vraiment mon style, mais pour une musique de fond un peu énergique je trouve que ça peut être une bonne proposition

with the first track being called metal guru i was expecting something a lot heavier. while its not heavy, it is catchy. a little boring at times, its not as good as electric warrior but not a bad album.

Good album with a pretty good rithm it has a few songs that i save in my personal playlist. I would listen to it again. 6/10

Enjoyable

Overall, pretty chill album, nothing too exciting. It was alright as a background listen, but it doesn't epic songs like Bang The Gong.

I love, love T. Rex's glam rock sound. They have such a unique sound, not unlike ZZ Top or Led Zeppelin. And when other artists copy their work, like the song "Rock On," they can make it totally different. I'm thinking of Def Leppard's cover in particular. Not all musicians' music is ripe for covers, is what I'm saying. Other than that, this whole album had a vibe that was cheeky glam rock, and I'm here for it. 3.5

The glam vibes were alive and well in "The Slider". This definitely sounded a lot like something Bowie might have done. I don't know if T. Rex is generally so recognizable, but between this album and their previous on the project ("Electric Warrior"), I feel like they have a very distinct sound. And a good one, at that.

Not exactly my type but I liked it

I have heard of T-Rex didn’t recall the sound. Album was OK and the two hits were good.

Once again, not sure why they chose this album for T.Rex. I think this curator just likes certain songs more than albums. T. Rex is great, just not digging the album.

Good album. Not great.

Mixed bag

I like glam, I like the T. Rex sound. There's nothing that stands out as exceptional on this album, though, although it's all pleasant enough to listen to.

non malo

A fun album. Not something I need but I enjoyed it. 3/5 stars.

Well done. This one was a little borderline for me, but embracing weirdness is always a way to score points for me, so I'm being generous.

I enjoy t.rex but can't really describe why. Bolan's voice is a little different but otherwise I can't put into words what makes it stand out compared to other things

Decent.

I was pleasantly surprised. Not too many songs stood out but I felt like it was solid rock.

fun and carefree.

The King of the Dinos slides another good album out to the masses. This one is a love story to cars with the title track and a few others odes to the auto. The Slider is a little grungier than Electric Warrior with simpler guitar riffs, less bass focus and back-up support. 3 records in 2 years with #'s 2&3 scoring some good points means I got to check out their debut. I'm hopping on the chariot choogle and riding this one to 3.48 stars.

Evidently the US completely slept on T. Rex as I never knew how prolific and popular of a band they were. It appears to be a decent blind spot as I had absolutely no previous exposure to The Slider (or anything beyond Bang a Gong really). I didn't enjoy it as much as the prior entry, but The Slider is another solid album from Marc Bolan and company. They stuck with their sound and cranked out another album that has some pretty good appeal. Nothing blew me away, but it was also a very easy listen from front to back. One of the songs almost sounded like a re-skinned alternate version of Bang A Gong. 2.91 stars

Very fun, a bit raw and loose but definitely with a guilty pleasure type of vibe. A lot of good tunes on this. I can hear the influence on bands like Def Lep and GnR.

A couple good songs, but overall a meh feeling glam rock album.

Okay album, not something I’d return too.

Glam-soundista rockia. Bowie vaikutteita. Aivan kiva.

Good fun glam rock 3.5 stars

Gøyalt, men går mye i samme spor. Svak 3’er.

Pretty good, but not as good as the previous album Electric Warrior. I don't know much about T.Rex, they have always come across as very mysterious to be, but that is probably because with Marc Bolan's untimely death, their output stopped before the 70's were out. Key tracks: Metal Guru

The classic T. Rex sound of boogying guitars, string arrangements and those 'aaaah' backing vocals is always great fun, and this is no exception. But compared to Electric Warrior, there are notably fewer standout tracks and it all blends together a bit.

I like rock, it was fine

Enjoyable. I wouldn't seek it out again but would be happy if it was on, it's got a nice energy.

A bit rambling but a few nice moments.

This is one of those bands that’s true to their sound. They’re also a band that is importantly to a segment of the population. A segment of which I am not a part. It’s fine, just not my thing.

Better than average but not quite a 4. It's good but nothing on this one really captured me like some other albums, even other T. Rex albums.

I liked this more than I expected to. Favorite tracks were Metal Guru and Rock On. 3.5 rounded down.

Thought I might like this quite a bit because I did enjoy Electric Warrior, an earlier album. But this was just decent throughout, nothing special. He was a huge heartthrob and star in his heyday in England, but never was big in the US.

Not a huge T. Rex guy tbh, outside of the big hits.

3.5 I thought Metal Guru was the worst song on the album and that was supposed to be the lead single? The slider is a burner and Buick Mackane was a stoner rock offering that I thought was interesting. Rest of songs are what I think Trex to be, fun glammy rock

Not a very good active listen as most songs have one riff repeating start to finish, but there’s nothing super awful here. The whispery vocals get annoying at times.

So okay 70's rock. Nothing that got me over excited.

T.Rex and glam rock, I heard that in my early youth and have almost forgotten it. I was thrilled back then. Today, I mostly only listen to it for nostalgic reasons, which aren't the worst. My taste has changed, partly due to the discovery of many other genres. And so I was able to listen to the album quite well, but I won't be doing it again any time soon. 3/5

not really my speed…

not a huge fan! didn’t actively dislike but didn’t really find anything about it i liked. other than the song names, they were very entertaining.

I just dont like 70-80s pop all thst much is what im finding out. This record isnt horrible it has some good songs but it isnt for me again i found it kinda annoying at parts but there was one acoustic song thst was pretty good.

Most of the tracks sound remarkably similar, which can become boring over time. Nothing outstanding though solid 70's rock.

Reminded me of Elton John, kind of. Liked the guitar work but I think it all blended together

I was never a big fan of T Rex. When they arrived it was peak prog which they never seemed fit into despite having a lot of love from the musical hierarchy at the time. In the end of course my aversion to T Rex was well founded when they became teenage girl favourites and arguably kings of glam rock. It’s ages in fact since I’ve heard any T Rex at all so listening today was a bit like hearing them for the first time. My conclusion is that I agree that Marc Bolan was indeed a very talented songwriter and musician with a very distinctive voice and style. So T Rex do deserve a place on the list even though personally it will never be for me. 3/5 13/5/25

Meh. Classic rock that’s okay.

I really liked Electric Warrior - it was such a slick glam rock experiment, and one of the first. This feels like a retread of that previous T Rex album. The songs are different, but the feel is the same. Honestly, while the two singles Metal Guru and Telegram Sam are solid, they sound an awful lot like the previous album. The one standout for me was Buick Mackane. Still, if we've got the iconic, trail blazing previous album on the 1,001 list I don't know why we need this follow-up. It's good but not as good, and I can't give it the same rating as Electric Warrior. So a 3 it is.

Better than other T. Rex I’ve heard. Don’t know if I needed to listen to it though. High 3.

ihan mukavaa soitantaa, rokkia

This album was pretty good to start. It seemed kind of ahead of its time. Eventually though the guy’s voice started getting on my nerves. I don’t think I’d listen again, but it certainly was far from the worst album I’ve encountered on this list.

me parece que eh tudo que o guns n roses queria ser viu. no mais eh decente! bem glam bem sexy

The roots of SO much music, can't deny it

Telegram Sam is basically a rewrite of Get It On. This album is pretty much the same as Electric Warrior. I don't dislike it, but it doesn't do a lot for me either.

Ripping! What are they? There’s no sound like T. Rex. Marc Bolan was a wild man and we were robbed of goodness by his early death. Their influence is everywhere. Look at these titles: Baby Boomerang Soaceball Ricochet Rabbit Fighter Chariot Choogle That’s rock and roll.

This album was fun!

Enjoyed it, there are some classics on the album

It's a good album but Electric Warrior already really covers this ground and has a massive single.

A pretty fun album to listen to - it was primarily in the background

not bad but also meh

3.0 2x

I'm a bit back and forth with this one. There are some great tunes like The Slide and Baby Boomerang and I like the guitar tone throughout There's something kind of flat about the production though, it doesn't feel very energetic and can make some songs feel a bit plodding, like Rock On. I liked that one initially but it felt like it was repeating the same ideas over again. Metal Guru is a bit I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday for me Decent enough Highlights: Baby Boomerang, Buick Makane, The Slide

Cool guys, I won't be a fan of glam rock, but it's definitely an interesting piece of music history and legacy.

I’ve found a formula that works and I’m going to damn well stick to it. Same few chords, same strings, same vocal harmonies. Not quite as good as Electric Warrior though.

Yeah, so this one sounds very glammy... and I think it's the first time I can call an album glam rock without knowing it's glam rock in advance. I can feel the spirit similar to The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The The Spiders From The Mars. And I can feel the other bits of T. Rex too. But I don't know, it didn't hit me.

Extra star just because of the song titles

empty calories

Actually I really vibed with this. I think it was a good mixture of something I felt comfortable with but also new territory that was really fun. It was good swaying music of that makes sense and it felt like something I had heard before but in a good way. 7/10.

Their previous album "Electric Warrior" didn't age well and this suffers a bit of the same... except I can clearly hear more of what came *next* in power pop/glam rock than in their previous work. Echoes of Jellyfish, Cheap Trick, 70s Bowie, etc. and I can even hear the path to a bit of melodic riff pop-metal. The same problem remains though in that I'm not sure I love the songs or the band all that much, but since the variety is a step up (although on "Telegram Sam" did they rip themselves off? i.e. "Bang A Gong" v2.0 with a totally different vocal track) I'd go with this over the previous breakthrough album. There are a few cuts to make a sampling somewhat worthwhile. /tepid review 5/10 3 stars.

It sounded promising during the first song!. But then it started to become too repetitive. I don't hate it though. Maybe it will grow up on me.

Sexy and groovy, stomping along with charisma and lush production. It's much heavier and rocks way harder than the "all mouth and no trousers" Electric Warrior that came before! Favourite tracks: Metal Guru, The Slider, Spaceball Ricochet, Buick McKane, Rabbit Fighter, Ballrooms of Mars

Really good album

Fine overall. Solid 4 star vibes. Decent 3 star songs.

I haven't had the pleasure of hearing a T. Rex project as a whole only Bang a Gong(the Oasis rip off connection) and 20th Century Boy Buick MacKane sounds like Black Keys and offers some of the energy that I was looking for in the project. Can we talk about the album cover and how it looks like an inspiration for young Slash to wear a hat? He says otherwise Chariot Choose sounds like RHCP with the yeahs yeahs😆 I do not appreciate the backing vocals would be better if they were more on the background instead of the ear piercing that pops up at random times 6/10

Could've been the possible bootleg Italian press I listened to it with, but it didn't really grab me. More listens are a must.

I liked this but probably more because I like their sound than because any part of this stood out. Does not match Electric Warrior.

This is like a ziggy stardust tribute album. Soggy Bar Dust and the Drivers of Cars or something. I mean it’s mostly good throughout but it bears a striking similarity in sound and affectation to that other 1972 album.

3+ Stars (9/15)

Meh. It's not their best work. Don't hate it. Don't love it.

Never heard them before. Interesting album. Loved the string arrangements.

it's fine.

Can't say I disliked it but I feel like I wasn't getting much out of this album beyond a few songs, it's not *bad* but it isn't wowing me in any of the ways it does its thing. Maybe I kinda wish that the music was more interesting because songs like "The Slider", "Buick Mackane", "Baby Strange" and "Ballrooms of Mars" really are interesting in combining all the cool glam rock of the era with more heavy hard rock without sounding like its doing too much. Still, not a bad time either way.

Decent but very standard rock album. Good for filler and backgrounds.

was definitely good but not much stood out to me

crazy that this was a posthumous christmas gift from my uncle. it’s like He Knew

Glamrock, produced by Toni Visconti. Mildly entertaining. Instantly recognizable. Brings back early childhood memories. Ok, but it sounds old and dated.

Middle of the road rock

3/13, 23%

Not my jam, but I suppose they served a purpose.

Silly, frivolous songs but very competently performed. It's not bad music but it's just not something I want to listen to consistently.

Underrated straight on rock and roll from a wonderful band.

I'd listened to a few other T.Rex albums and been thoroughly underwhelmed so I was scared of this, but it wasn't so bad. Mediocre but I will take it in the circumstances.

This was fine. I haven't really listened to T. Rex before, and I understand why. It was missing the umph that post-punk and other punk records have. I know it's super influential, but I like the things it influenced more than I like this album. Best Songs: Metal Guru, The Slider, Ballrooms Of Mars Worst Songs: Chariot Choogle

- moody Platte

3.0 - Ok

Pop rock with a psychedelic lean

Groovy glam album, it doesn't sound dated even after 50+ years. Personally, I like a few songs, but the whole album drags a bit too long to me. I prefer Roxy Music or Bowie at their best to T.Rex.

Could recognize the sound of T Rex, but the tracks didn’t jump out at me as much as those of “Electric Warrior”… still, decent tracks of classic dad-rock, nice for background music. 3/5

Solid album.

A few good hits but the rest is samey. If you put all their hits in one album it would be great but they spread them across a few so........

I liked this album. I didn't know it was on the list. "The Slider" was the beginning of glam rock. There wasn't any song I could call a favourite. Sorry, I couldn't think about what to write. 3 stars for "The Slider".

I had a friend a long time ago that said T.Rex was his favorite band in the whole world. I haven't seen that friend in a long time, but listening to this album was fun because of those memories.

2 and a half.

Meh. Bland. It's OK-ish, but nothing special.

A pretty solid and well engineered record. Feels like an attempt catch lightning in a bottle a second time. Electric Warrior has it over this record and The Slider sounds like it should be all the B-Sides from it. Telegram Sam even sounds like Bang a Gong II. All that said it is quite good, just not as good as Warrior.

Feels like a more guitar heavy and psychedelic rock version of Bowie which is cool, pretty standard rock songs, all of them at least decent, solid 6.5/10

these boys are quite nice

"I loved itttttt" - Longlegs

Don’t like glam but that had some driving sounds. It was alright

I surprisingly quite like this album. It kind of calmed me and I liked the flow of the songs. I could hear it in the background and didn't feel like it disturbed me. Would listen to it again.

I like the guitar in this album, simple but very effective tunes.. bit of a guilty pleasure this kind of camp, early rock genre, very similar all the way through though

once again, i get the importance of this album, but the sound doesn’t appeal to me. t. rex is a glam rock icon though and for that this album deserves all the praise it’s gotten.

Glam rock forerunners. Marc Bolan as frontman.

2.5* some highs and lows, unexpectedly liked some songs, but will never listen to again

Metal Guru 3.3 Mystic Lady 3.1 Rock On 3.2 The Slider 3.4 Baby Boomerang 3.3 Spaceball Ricochet 3 Buick MacKane 3.5 Telegram Sam 3.4 Rabbit Fighter 3.4 Baby Strange 3.2 Ballrooms of Mars 3.2 Chariot Choogle 3.5 Main Man 3.4 Score: 3.3

Pretty ok

I enjoyed this slightly more than I thought I would! I would say it’s well above average for an early 70’s rock record. This list has helped illuminate little nuggets of albums like these, that teach me that there was a lot of good music more grounded in reality thats been hiding behind the wall of select classic rock hits that get played to death

3.75 Very enjoyable.

Passable bops that were nice to listen to, but there wasn't enough meat to push it into 4 stars for me

Wow what a coincidence. I still like this, but in some ways I feel like it is just the last album but worse. I like the flanger on some songs, but the more rock and roll type songs start to get a bit annoying. Favourite songs: first 2 and last one. Overall around 6/10

Un bon album de old school rock avec une petite touche progressive, mais pas grand chose à dire de plus que l'autre T. Rex. 6.5/10

It was pretty good. I haven't listened to T Rex besides the big singles so need to do that to really rate this one properly. Decent fun on first listen and my appreciation will probably grow as a dive further in. Rating: 3.4

Gar nicht mal unhörbar.

First time listening to this. Liked very much.

It's certainly glam rock. It's pretty good but Bowie does it better.

This definitely grew on me, my favorites were “Baby Boomerang” and “Rabbit Fighter”

Decent 3.5

There's a lot of repetitive sections that are really grating. This isn't for me.

The Slider was better than expected and requires more listens. A mix of rock, folk, glam. The later part of the album had a lot of Beatles influence and even name dropped Lennon. Bolan is compared to Bowie a lot, I haven’t heard any other T.Rex but at least this album is significantly more accessible than Bowie 7.5/10

Eh, not bad. Pretty standard blues-rock to my ears. Marc has a unique voice for the genre, the album is decently rocking. Just not much stands out or hooks my attention. Overall it sounds like 70s rock.

No bad. Very David Bowie-esque

Not very much to say about this album really, a pretty average 70s rock album

The instrument play was strong as well as the vocals. The lyrics did not make a lot of sense to me, hence the 3.

A bit of funk and spunk made it somewhat interesting.

Totally mid and typical glam rock. There’s very little going on musically, it’s just kinda the same lyrics repeated over and over again, the band thinks they’re really cool, totally mid. Just whatever don’t understand why I needed to hear this before I died.

overall this was a pretty good listen. some funky vibes, enjoyed the sounds & instruments. then got to the last track which didn't seem like it belonged with the rest. aside from the final track, it would be ok as background music. 3.5 stars

Starts strongly with Metal Guru and also contains the hits Telegram Sam and Rock On. The remainder of the album is a mix of ballads and chugalong boogie, with one or two tracks perhaps influenced by Led Zep (especially Chariot Choogle). Overall not bad, but the singles easily stand out

this was going to be a 4 until the second to last song but it kinda seems like he's into it? so... 3.5

first listen it's alright

Can see how this album influenced glam rock and rock in general, and I enjoyed some of the songs, but it ultimately feels inferior to the types of bands that drew influence from them.

there's a lot to love about this album and lot to be left undesired. Glam rock infused but not quite bowie or iggy pop. Starting song and Ballroom of Mars are my standout songs

I thought this one was okay, but didn’t love it. I thought it was quite similar to Electric Warrior as I remember it. Liked a few of the songs, but I would have been disappointed if I had purchased it back in the day. Maybe if I listened to it more, it would grow on me, but on to the next one.

Previously rated: Electric Warrior (3/5) ************************** Another just average album from T. Rex. Some songs were OK, The Slider and Buick Mackane. Telegram Sam sounded like Bang a Gong part 2. Ends on a low note with Main Man. I don't think this album is notable enough to be here honestly. I listened to a much better Slade album (The Amazing Kamikaze Syndrome) after this.

That's not my taste in musik. But ok.

Quite similar to lots of others on here but not a bad listen

Solid background music.

I could hear influences of multiple artists throughout this one. Couldn't quite put my finger on it. Plenty good, odd it didn't have lasting popularity, at least that I know of

T. Rex is pretty cool and weird. It's a 3+ for me but not quite enough to round up

2.5 stars. It was fine, just fairly lackluster overall. Title track is the standout. "Metal Guru" is decent too.

Ok 70’s rock

Didnt enjoy as much as Electric Warrior. But still a solid album. Standout Songs: Rock on Buick Mackane Ballrooms of Mars

That's okay! Probably good

Let’s slide, bitch

Goed, degelijk album. Niks vergeleken met Electric Warrior natuurlijk. Een goeie 3.4* zou ik zeggen.

Sounds like a middle-of-the-road Bowie album

I generally consider T. Rex to be repetitive and one-note, but this album had a bit of variety and was pretty fun.

There were 2 or 3 songs I really enjoyed on here The rest were all repetitive and bland. Wasn't bad but an easily forgetable album 3 ⭐️

Late hippy english rock

30 years ago I would've given this a 4, maybe even a 5. It's sad how some things dull over time. A 3 for effort & nostalgia I guess.

70s rock; pleasant enough, but unremarkable. 3/5

ersti drü songs sfoch mol glost oh i schriibe und bsunders etz rock on isch seeehr geil. el slider au cool? beber boomeräng? geile song. spaceball ricochet het en celler da heisst ernste song. telegram sam isch huuuere geil. bi jetz bi ballrooms of mars und bi immer wieder chli wegdriftet, packt mi nöd so irgendwie das album. ich hass main man. cools album findi mit mega emne klare sound aber finden etz zwenig speziell oder cool zum es vieri geh.

It has some charm, but that's really it.

This was very disappointing after hearing Electric Warrior. Telegram Sam is the one standout to me. Liked songs added: - Telegram Sam - Ballrooms of Mars

A presence subdued With a near singular tone Fades fast to forgot

It was pretty good

One year on from the genre-defining “Electric Warrior”, T. Rex returned with a light but enjoyable set of songs, continuing a run which solidified Marc Bolan as an arbiter of aestheticism in rock. “The Slider” could easily be dismissed as “style over substance”, but is this even a relevant claim when the style looks (and sounds) this good? Let’s see… Things begin oh-so-promisingly, with one of the band’s greatest hits in “Metal Guru”. It’s propulsive, slick and assured, picking up where “Electric Warrior” left off with a slightly harder edge. The song’s structure repeats itself again and again, but it hardly matters when it’s such a great hook. The ensuing album soon reveals itself as a back-and-forth between gamely stomp-alongs and rote acoustic ballads. Chords, tempo and arrangements all seem to be on ration (count the uses of the “Get It On” power chord rhythm, or the “ahhh” backing vocals following the root notes). It’s certainly not a dud, though, and there are plenty of highlights to keep things rolling. “Buick Mackane” is a convincing rocker, with some great string action and guitar improv in the coda. “Telegram Sam”, the other big single, is difficult to resist boogying along to. And “Chariot Choogle” has a nice knotty riff which drives itself home. In the end, “The Slider” is a fun listen, but doesn’t reach the same heights as its contemporaries or the band’s own “Electric Warrior” (particularly when it comes to the slower ballads). I appreciate that Bolan deserves a glittery bucket-load of credit for bringing glam-rock to the fore in the early 1970’s, paving the way for Bowie and Roxy Music among countless others. But surely nobody could claim “The Slider” to be on the same level as “Ziggy Stardust” or “For Your Pleasure”: there just isn’t the same diversity in songs and arrangements, or theatrical oomph. Instead, it stays in its lane throughout its runtime, repeating Bolan’s well established formula until the dancing shoes have worn off and glam’s curfew is here.

I am conflicted about how much I enjoyed this album, it has been full of up and downs to me. Especial mention to "Rock On", which has been the best among all the inconsistency. P.S.: It's crazy how much the intro made me think about MIKA.

Das Cover kennt jeder. Die Musik auch.

This album’s got stagger and a cool sound, but the songs are only decent. Not great, like Get it On.

Semmoista jykevää rokkia, hyvää sellaista. Parhaat: Telegram Sam, Ballroons Of Mars, Main Man

Enjoyed this. Not as much as I’d hoped. Doubt I’d listen again. I’ve heard better T rex on other albums. 3.2

A second from T. Rex, which I don't think is necessary. I'd rank it slightly below our first. It's pretty good classic rock music, but that's where my review begins and ends. It's also British, which explains why mediocrity was rewarded two slots on the list. Favorite tracks: Rock On, Baby Boomerang, Buick Mackane, Main Man. Album art: Pretty solid, classic red/white/black scheme. Person looks a bit freaky. 3.5/5

Honestly, i was quite surprised with how good The Slider was. I felt that it mostly flip flopped between two different styles one being a more rock out sort of style (the one i prefer but i still like the other one) and a style that feels like something that Elliott Smith would eventually go on to do but this album still feels like an alpha version of that. . The album also cut a quick pace, almost too quick at points as the songs could go by so fast that they didn't have enough time to really sink into my head. Despite that small blunder, it was still able to be a good album that really inspired a lot of the other albums i liked on this project. Best Song: The Slider Worst Song: Main Man

T. Rex is classic. They don't sound very good and their songs are pretty basic, but it's the height of glam perfection. Bolan is awesome, but he could only live in that time. I can't imagine an old Bolan today, trying to be all androgynous and cool while nursing a fragile hip. I might prefer "Electric Warrior" to this album. 3.6

Catchy, charming glam rock. A bit repetitive, but fun and enjoyable none the less.

Nothing groundbreaking here. Thought it was an okay listen.

New to me. Pretty chill, enjoyed listening

Overall, I found this too repetitive and annoying. Some tracks were kind of fun, though, so I’ll round it up to 3.

Classic T Rex. If you like it you like it, if you don’t….

I like T.Rex's sound, but not a lot of their songs. Standouts here are Mystic Lady, The Slider, and Rabbit Machine.

Very middle of the road stuff here

It’s fine. Very 70s.

Pretty fun - never hear before

Classic 70’s sound.

What is the relationship between T. Rex and Dinosaur Jr.? T. Rex can’t be Dinosaur Jr.’s father (though that would be chronologically and stylistically interesting) because then it would be T. Rex Jr. Or T. Rex would be called Dinosaur. Are there any more dino-themed band names that could be party of the family? Whether this is from the Jurassic (oh, Jurassic 5!) Era, the Triassic, or 1972, T. Rex’s “The Slider” defies time and categorization. Some of it sounds like proto-80s indie rock, some 70s arena rock, some late 60s Beatles-esque psychedelic rock, and they do it all well. Apparently this was their glam phase, but I think that only describes a small portion of “The Slider.”

The bluesy influences get me going for this album (Baby Boomerang and Telegram Sam). Most of the album is enjoyable but not noteworthy.

I don’t really have a lot to say with this one. It’s ok.

klingt einfach nach T. Rex

can we get to Moondance already?

Pretty good. Nothing special. 6/10

Not bad, some songs of theirs I had not listened to much.

It was fine, didn't blow me away.

I was busy listening to this sorry, enjoyed it enough tho, some songs I found a bit annoying

Rock, Pop, 1972 -> 3

Not as good as the other T Rex one, or their wonky folk, but still fun.

Ehh it was fine. I didn't enjoy this as much as the other T. Rex album I got a while back.

A long and repetitive album. Buick Makane is a belting song. When they turn to straight up rock it sounds great.

t. rex

This was ok. Nothing memorable to me

2024-03-28...

Pas mal

Good I guess

Not bad, but also not really sure it deserves a spot on this list. Sounded like a Jack White prototype. 5/10 (2.5/5)

alright. not bad, even

It's fine. I liked a couple of the songs and didn't dislike the rest.

Haaleenlaimeet mielipiteet.

Tässä biisintekotekniikka alkaa paljastua inspiraation alta. Jälkimmäistäkin on. Mutta mitenhän levy uppoisi ilman Telegram Samia?

Enjoyed it, but didn’t feel like I’d take much away from this one. Good listen but ultimately not very memorable

Came into this with zero expectations and was a nice surprise. Really nice guitar riffs and good rock voice.

Mysticism and pop can be a perfectly fine combination. Sometimes a perfect one. But it can quickly turn turgid if the artist gets dumb about transcendence being antithetical to pop. Suddenly, they think tempo, vibrancy, structure and precision are the enemy.

Mostly more of the same as Electric Warrior (a 5 star record for me) but just doesn’t do it for me in the same way.

metal guru baby strange ballrooms of mars

He’s somewhat of a neglected figure now but Marc Bolan was a huge star. He is somewhat limited in his songwriting but boy within those limits he could write. Again the ridiculous limitation of greatest hits compilations means that we listen to all of this and not just the outstanding singles.

Born too late for this album to mean anything nostalgic, I was left trying to like it, which was an alarm bell. So I sat back instead of 'leaning in' and let it do its thing as background. There are some okay tracks. For me it is very dated rock n roll without anything to pick me up or sing along to. But some lyrics made me smile. Nice to hear some of that glam rock era stuff where they fed everything and anything they thought of into the lyrics and didn't take themselves so seriously. They had very stiff competition which this album came out .... For me it isn't much.

Electric Warrior (1971) is Bolan’s 5-star album. Slider was the follow-up, and it’s definitely not in the same league, but it’s better than I remember. In fact, even though I’ve owned the record for decades, I really only remember the 2 singles, Telegram Sam & Metal Guru. So playing it 3 times in the last day has been a revelation. A lot of the songs sound familiar, not because I remember them - they just sound like Bolan songs. Hard to believe that Stevie Wright’s Evie (1973) wasn’t influenced by Buick Mackane. Of the rest, I really like Baby Strange & Rock On. Visconti again shows what a great producer he was. And I did not know that Flo & Eddie supplied the backing vocals - to great effect. I wanna give it 4, but I think it’s a 3.

I like T Rex's sound. I've never heard this album before now. Pleasant and fun. Not sure if I will listen to it again, but enjoyed it

It’s ok but not really that special, didn’t min listening to it but don’t think I’ll listen to it again

Not bad, not memorable

It has a nice vibe to it but I highly doubt I'll ever return to this album

good classic rock album. not my favourite one i’ve heard but still a very good album. i like the melodies. they sound very unique and the songs are very well put together and the songs are very catchy. 3.5/5

Not bad for glam rock - actually reminds me of the black keys a bit.

Nice album. Never heard before.

Besides the well known "Metal Guru" - that got me hooked the whole day - it´s just a solid classic rock album.

Ég skil ekki hvernig Marc Bolan var svona stórt nafn, þetta er sama riffið aftur og aftur, áttundaraddanir og lágt mixað brass. Röddin meh. Þið vitið, ekki leiðinlegt en það er til mun betra glam.

Every time I listen to T.Rex; I think “man I need some of him on vinyl”

Anyone who likes the sound and vocals of Marc Bolan will enjoy this record - perhaps not all the tracks. Surprisingly, the songs don't sound old, almost contemporary.

A true classic from the underground but how well does is it in 1001 albums? I’m not sure. 3.25/5.

I do like a bit T-Rex, nothing I knew on this album though and nothing standing out for it to be in the 4s or 5s territory. Simpsons reference: There is a character called T-Rex, don’t think I can count that as a reference though.

Favorites: Metal Guru Buick McCane Telegram Sam Chariot Choogle

A completely middle of the road T. Rex album is still better than most non-Bowie glam rock, tbh.

I've listened to Electric Warrior before, so I was expecting the same kind of crunchy glam rock, but this was way more psychedelic and interesting than I expected it to be. Don't see myself returning to it a lot but still very interesting.

Buick McCane is my favorite on here. Definitely a distinct vibe and obvious influence for Ty Segall. Paradoxically feels a little grimier and glammier than other early 70's rock. Ringo took the pic on the front cover. Less vision but similar sound to spiders era Bowie.

It's alright. Nothing that I disliked, but also not likely one that'll spend much time in my ears.

I enjoyed this to start with but 3/4 of the way though I had definitely had enough. Highlights: Metal Guru The Slider Telegram Sam

Not that familiar with t rex at all really but was expecting to quite enjoy this. I'm a little bit disappointed. It was good in parts, but I was losing interest in the middle. Was some interesting stuff at the start and end though.

Ingenious pop music

This was impressive for sure. Didn't always capture my attention but there were sections of the album I really enjoyed. Will have to revisit this one later because I can see my rating for it getting higher. Another album that is so close to a 4 but I just can't justify now. Fav songs: - Metal Guru - The Slider - Rabbit Fighter - Baby Strange - Ballrooms of Mars

Not bad, liked their first album a bit better, but still found this enjoyable.

Not really my speed

Underdog rock that you can see paved the way for the lo-fi indie rock of bands like \"pavement\". The highs are high and the lows are boring. Was nor grasped at all points but can see why the sound of T.REX is acclaimed as a godfather for a certain type of indie rock that isn't always my favorite. Would like to give it another shot but wasn't totally gripping for a first listen. 3.5/5
