Such a favourite. Really nostalgic of good times and still hits today.

No private session used for Spotify. There was a time in the early 2000's where I had a car with a 5 disc cd changer and I had a little booklet with about 10 more cds in it. These fifteen cds were all find representations of albums that were awesome for road trips. This album was one of those.

sehr cool, 4/5 i guess.. oder 5/5?? vllt 5/5 .. ja.. gefällt mir

Wow! Amazing listen! This album from them is extraordinary.

One of the best albums of the aughts. Balls out rock with songs about teenage balding and erectile dysfunction. The syncopations and grooves vary widely. I think Velvet Snow embodies the album in 2 minutes. It’s awesomely frantic and they pack a change in at 1:20 and an outro at 1:50. Economical rocking to the max.

I think Kings of Leon might have suffered somewhat from the excessive success of Sex on Fire. Rather liked this album

Truly one of my favourite records. They never sounded like wild and free again.

I’m really confused with this one. I know Kingd of Leon because of Sex on Fire and Use Somebody and just assumed they were “two hit wonders” and had no good albums. How wrong I was. I love this. I love the singers voice. I love the guitars all over this and love most of the 13 songs. ❤️

This is one of my favorite albums. Sue me!

Was going to it a 4 but couldn’t stop listening to it. Odd 5 in that it’s not Rumours, DSOTM, etc., but I really enjoyed it.

Excellent

This is a bit of a weird one, the music and the energy is top notch, but whoever mixed this down and made the vocals twice as loud as the music really did this album a disservice. I wish they would remix it cause it's pretty solid indie/garage rock. The vocals are mediocre but the guy has his own style and the inflection he puts on his words and melodies is interesting. The Bucket is the best tune but all the songs are good, Day Old Blues is a skip track for me. Solid album, recommended for afternoon or evening listening on some decent speakers.

Love this album!

Fantastic. Still one of my favourites

I just have a soft spot for this band, and I like this album enough to give it five stars.

Milky as hell. "She had problems with drinking milk and being school tardy" Incredible to have a hit centered around Milk in 2005.

Extremely dynamic and concise. Great listening experience with songs I’ll be returning to. Love it!

I always forget how good Kings of Leon are. Very good alt rock album.

Everyone was a fan of this album in 2007. I wasn't. Since then, I've listened to the singles and enjoyed the band at this stage in their journey (spoiler: they kinda suck now!). In fact, people often call this their peak album. I quite liked it, there was a nice level of sporadic rock n roll, which was different! Different for the time! And still relatively different now. Some catchy numbers and some cool riffs and drum grooves. I don't know why I wasn't in to it back then... 5 stars.

You’ve just walked out of your last exam, marking the end of your first year at university. Your friends are back at the hall of residence, and they are already drinking. Free from exam study stress, and not yet faced with the responsibility of a summer job, you and your friends have a magical four days of partying before everyone heads home. Occasionally you feel a bit glum, as you consider how you’ll be away from your friends for a few months. But that’s alright, you’ll see them soon enough and your idiot friend just caught drinking with his right hand. Rules are rules, he’s gonna have to chop that beer.

Loved it!

Love it. KOL er et av mine favorittband.

love it

before they turned into overproduced arena rock

I really enjoyed this! Earthy and gritty

I almost forgot how good Kings of Leon were in the old days before they became a more straight up pop band. I love the stripped down garage rock vibes on this record. 4.5/5 #184

insanely good

The first album that got me into this band!

Best one from list (pf better;))

A classic alt-garage-southern rock album. Literally every song on this album is worth a listen on repeat.

Kings of Leon’s sophomore album starts off with 6 consecutive absolute bangers with my favourite being the opener Slow Night So Long, this is a pretty big improvement on Youth and Young Manhood

najdraži

I knew I liked Kings of Leon, I didn't know I loved Kings of Leon. The voice moves away from human and into instrument, it blends and meshes so perfectly into the folk/rock guitar and bass. Almost every song has some harmonic moment that makes you look up and say 'Neat!'

This was already high up on my list of favourite indie albums before this. It's just so good. Could listen on repeat forever!

I like this one. Always liked Caleb's unique vocal style and musically it is really done well also. Everything fits and great pacing. 5 Stars

I loooove this album so much ! I stole this from my step dad when I was 13 and fell in love. I haven’t listened to this in like 10 years but hearing these tracks again reminded me of how perfect this album is. Every song is 10/10 but something about Milk gives me shivers

I’ve heard this album before, such a goodie. King of the Rodeo still one of my fav KoL songs

Full of energy.

- I read the reviews on this project and so many times think "There are so many people who just don't know shit about music; the history or how to listen anything, new or old." This is unquestionably a great album. The writing, the composition, the playing - it has it all. This record is clearly their own, referencing music history while bringing their own voice to the output. -

Great classic cover to cover.

Took me back to my teens. Surprised by how many if the songs I could sing all the words to! Taper jean girl, the bucket, four kicks, rememo! So good

It's such a good album, still holds up super strong. Loads of memories tied to this one

Lost my review. 4.5 bumped up to 5.

Bam, 5 sterren.

This is another formative album for me, impossible to rate subjectively! These guys were the height of coolness when I was a teenager, and this is them at their best. Not a bad song on here, and there's even one about Whiskey Dick. Don't think I've ever heard another band address that phenomenon, so it's got that going for it.

So so so good, i want his voice injected in my veins i cant get enough

Liked it a lot. Brought back some memories as I used to listen to it a lot but it has fallen off my radar.

Still long before selling out, Kings of Leon were absolutely swaggering at this point. They also weren't making huge waves in America, which was fine as it meant we got to appreciate them on the smaller-venue scene in the UK while they were absolutely battering tracks like The Bucket, Pistol of Fire and Four Kicks. There's definitely an argument that there's too much unchecked testosterone and not enough finesse on display here but I didn't particularly care then and I'm not about to pretend I'm too highbrow now to enjoy it still. Rise and shine, all you gold-diggin' mothers.

I like this

I thought this was fun and I enjoyed it. I should give it a 4, but there was no song I didn’t like so I’ll give it the full points.

Nice easy listening.

I have such a soft spot for this album. One of the first albums I bought myself and still stands the test of time. Through to bucket doesn’t really miss a beat

Absolute banger of an album. They move away from their NME indie darling status and make a more grungy, smelly, brewer's droopy, coke fuelled road album. They'd never hit this peak again. Best Tracks: The Bucket; Soft; Four Kicks

2004 Bill would give this album 5 stars and you know what… 2024 Bill is going to give it 5 stars!

Great album. Been a while since I heard it

I don’t know what to tell you, this is a good album. With less overt Country elements than their debut, Aha Shake Heartbreak doubles down on the harder elements of KoL’s sound and perfects their nervy, edgy, indie-inspired take on Southern Rock

Maybe I’m a Kings Of Leon fan now. The vibes are locked in 💯. The music is really really good. As noted in my Youth And Young Manhood review, dude is still mumbling here but I don’t mind.

Got a soft spot for this one. I actually really like Caleb's voice and it's my wife's favourite band so gotta give em a 5.

The peak kings of Leon

Perfect combination of edgy songs, a raw sound and charismatic vocals.

classic, one of my favorites, resonates with my mid 20s and a fun time in my life

I don’t understand the complaints about Caleb’s singing He’s like a horny early rockier Michael Stipe But then my 2nd born is called Caleb Was the world crying out for the 2nd KoL album to be this good? No it wasn’t. Was the 2nd KoL album banger after banger? Yes it was

Really really liked it, good stuff

Love this album

An album showing the maturity of the band. Recommended.

What an album! So many hard knockers in here. This band truly had something special. Such a shame they went after the money and mainstream. Standout tracks: Slow Night, So Long, King Of The Rodeo, Taper Jean Girl, Milk, The Bucket, Soft, Razz, Day Old Blues, Four Kicks, Velvet Snow, Rememo, Where Nobody Knows. 9,5 out of 10

I think pre-mainstream Kings of Leon were a super fun band - and this album is the richest of the two. For me it brings good memories too since it was out during a specific period of my life - I don't think I can find any fault in this album to be honest - it's perfectly paced, good songs, never overstays it's welcome, and it makes great music for running to.

Has velvet snow. + 3 stars. Is nearly as good as their debut. + 3 stars. ******

Goed plaatje

Immediately nostalgic. - Still pretty unique and exciting

This album used to be played almost every other day in a flat I was in during my uni years . I can’t help but love it for the nostalgia it gives me

This is an album that you have to let grow on you. I didn’t understand it fully when I heard it as a good, but I thought it was unique and had a mystique to it. Caleb’s voice is mesmerizing to me, I think those who do not like it can consider their opinion valid, but I would credit the polarizing atmosphere of this album to the chances this album took, it’s like punk country. Small town Oklahoma boys, ripping up some guitar and laying some delicious drum fills to some expert bass lines and the vocals are not to be understood, but to be felt. It’s primal, and it’s fucking punk rock!

Love this album. There are some super fun songs, mixed with more mellow and reflective tracks.

Wow, that was an amazing listening. I really loved it from start to end, I like the vibe so much. The rythm of the album is super good and it alternates calmer moments with catchy parts. Favorite Tracks : Soft, Four Kicks Rating : 4.5 / 5

Top dit! Vette, originele sound, leuke nummers.

Really, really ,really enjoyed listening to this

Surprising for what I've always thought of as a pop rock band. More blues, great lyrics, great vocals! Thoroughly enjoyed!

La 31eme écoute est la meilleure

It's all pretty good stuff. I think they do good work. But I am curious why this got the nod. I don't think it's they're best, but I'll take it.

Rougher than what I usually think of kings of leon but still unmistakeably kings of leon

I’d forgotten how much I like pre Sex On Fire KoL. Rough and ready, nonsense lyrics, quick fire rock tunes. Prefer their debut still, but this is very good

These guys are good and solid. There’s just something that doesn’t quite do it for me. There’s sort of pop punk sound, slightly. Clearly rock. I’d say The Glorious Sons do it better. I like the jam feel aspect of them but again, something just doesn’t seem right. I don’t have a choice cut so that should tell you that nothing really blew me away. It’s ok. It’s a good background soundtrack

# Kings of Leon - *Aha Shake Heartbreak*: An In-Depth Review Released in November 2004 and produced by Ethan Johns, *Aha Shake Heartbreak* is the second studio album from the Followill clan. Recorded live at Three Crows Studio in Los Angeles using The Beatles' old Abbey Road mixing desk, it captures a band at a pivotal moment — caught between the raw garage-rock of their debut and the massive arena-rock they'd later become . ## Music and Production The album's sonic signature is a "fuzz-encrusted rocket of controlled violence" — tighter and more intricate than *Youth and Young Manhood* . Where the debut wore its Southern rock influences proudly, *Aha Shake Heartbreak* trades some of that rowdiness for angular, post-punk-inspired riffs. "King of the Rodeo" sounds like "barn-dance Wire," with odd beat math and stabbing guitars that show the band pushing beyond simple rock formulas . Producer Ethan Johns captures the band playing live in the studio with minimal overdubs, resulting in a dry, immediate sound . The rhythm section deserves particular praise: Jared Followill's bass often anchors the riffs while Nathan Followill's drums alternately show Keith Moon-style abandon and puritanical restraint . The band frequently splits songs into different verse, chorus and bridge tempos — a variant on Nirvana's soft-loud dynamic that creates effective musical whiplash . Highlights like "The Bucket" showcase shimmering rhythm guitars, tom-tom rolls and a chorus of harmonized sighs that channels classic pop . "Milk" builds beautifully through layered instrumentation across its five-minute running time, and "Taper Jean Girl" matches swaggering guitar marches with rubbery foreboding . ## Lyrics and Themes Caleb Followill's lyrics are the album's most polarizing element. He sings in "visceral rather than literal sense, barking in tongues as he fights for a grip on hope and equilibrium" . Lines like "She's seventeen but I done went and plum forgot it" open the album with provocative ambiguity . Thematically, the album explores sin, seeking, and the tensions of Caleb's evangelical upbringing. His "tent-show Bon Scott howl" suggests a singer "choking on brimstone" — a man at war with his own impulses . Songs navigate one-night stands ("Slow Night, So Long"), impotence ("Soft"), and the strain of newfound fame ("The Bucket" references a "balding" star drinking in the lobby) . However, the lyrical abstraction sometimes crosses into sheer gibberish. Lines like "Cunts watch their bodies, no room for make-up" and "It's going to tickle / You're going to giggle" read less as mysterious poetry than as awkward, occasionally misogynistic nonsense . The "yodeling" on "Day Old Blues" is particularly divisive, described by one critic as "painful" and distracting . ## Influence and Reception The album found its strongest reception in the UK, where critics appreciated its "half-disheveled, half-revolutionary" energy and echoes of social class in the band's Southern drawl . *Rolling Stone* called it "nearly great" — a record of immense promise just short of "pulverizing excellence" . Contemporary reviews praised the band's "alarmingly sophisticated pop" instincts wrapped in back-of-class mumbling . The UK's *Ultimate Guitar* gave it 9.3/10, calling it "innovative, so musically and technically brilliant" . The album's influence can be heard in later garage-rock revival acts that combined Southern swagger with angular post-punk rhythms. --- ## Pros and Cons **Pros:** - **Innovative rhythmic complexity:** The band's willingness to split songs into different verse/chorus tempos creates genuinely exciting dynamics - **Superb production:** Ethan Johns' live-in-the-studio approach captures raw energy without feeling undercooked - **Strong first half:** Tracks like "Slow Night, So Long," "The Bucket," and "Taper Jean Girl" represent the band at their creative peak - **Excellent musicianship:** The interplay between Jared's anchoring bass, Nathan's dynamic drums, and Matthew's chiming guitar riffs is consistently impressive **Cons:** - **Inconsistent back half:** After "The Bucket," the album loses focus; tracks like "Velvet Snow," "Rememo," and "Where Nobody Knows" feel underdeveloped or substanceless - **Polarizing lyrics:** The abstraction sometimes crosses into "gibberish," with occasional uncomfortable themes and embarrassing lines (particularly "Soft" and "Day Old Blues") - **Scattered identity:** The album tries so many new things that it feels less defined than the debut; some tracks lean into Zeppelin-style hard rock while others feel like filler - **Caleb's vocal limitations:** His strained delivery works on some tracks but becomes grating on others, particularly during the much-maligned yodeling --- *Aha Shake Heartbreak* remains a fascinating document of a band in transition — often brilliant, occasionally frustrating, and never boring. The promise of a third, perfect album loomed large, and for many listeners, that promise was enough .

A nice throwback

I think this is the second record here? I think the they were relevant for about a half a second. This feels like a waste of a space. Can’t believe how much generic average crap is here. Hmm. I wrote this before I listened. I rather enjoyed this record. Catchy stuff. Guess what. Ima gonna give this 4 fucking stars. Try and fucking stop me. Woooooooo!

I liked this way more than I anticipated!

Brilliant. Saw them at Glasto 2008. Nostalgia value plus great tunes

Pretty good. Aged well. Nice listen.

No skips but not quite up with Youth And Young Manhood for me

All of the people hating on this album have a big fat dump in their pants. Not their best work, but so much fun! Best Song: King of the Rodeo Rating: 7.5/10 Stars: 4

Not sure how I've gone without listening to the breakout album of one of my favorite bands... adding it to the rotation for sure.

Really good listen. Fun rocking album

I have a ton of nostalgia for this one. This album was right before their shift in style and I love it. Caleb Followill’s vocals are unique and weird on this project. But it truly reflects the sound of early 2000s alternative rock. It’s not perfect but I have a lot of fun going back and listening to this record.

Good album. I enjoyed listening. 2nd time through with headphones and WOW…I missed a lot of the lyrics! I enjoyed it more the 2nd time through.

A great band where I have only heard some of their biggest songs before today, mostly from their 2008 album (2 albums after this one) so when this album popped up I was really hyped. Their sound changed from this album to the one I'm more familiar with. The style of singing, the distortion on the guitars, the speed of the songs. This album is very different from what I expected. Not in a bad way at all, I just had to change my state of mind. I really enjoyed my listen through of the album and its music that I can see myself listening to again. Perhaps unfortunate for this list I love the 2008 album had have listened to it so many times that today mostly made me want to go and listen through that again. It was still a fun time listening through and hearing another side of the band that I was unfamiliar with.

Very good. 4/5

This album has a cool garage rock feel to it which I quite dig. The only time I heard of Kings of Leon before this was when Use Somebody was all over the radio. While I liked that song, I like the more raw sound this album has. It's got me nostalgic for the garage shows I'd go to. The Bucket is probably my favorite song from the album but there are a fair few other bangers.

I've always felt I should like KOL more than I do. Regardless, this is solid.

Not as good as the last KoL album we reviewed. I still don't what Caleb is singing, but he does a damn fine job of it. The difference between this album and Youth and Young Manhood is, I think, the licks, which just aren't quite as a strong on this album.

Decent alt rock record

I enjoyed this more than I remember. Some solid rock from a band that I thought was poised to become the biggest group in the USA in 2008. They never took that next leap but I like their music. This album doesn't have anything I remember being played on the radio but I relished it all throughout. Top tracks: "The Bucket," "King of the Rodeo," "Slow Night, So Long," "Soft"

Not bad

Reviews say I should hate this but I didn’t. Reminds me of college I guess?

I wish the rest of their catalog sounded like this album.

ive been trying to get into country for 26 years. im still not into country but this feels like something of a compromise. i might accidentally love kings of leon. favorite song is Milk or Taper Jean Girl

Kol at their best

I remember hearing these guys at Bonnaroo and then getting the CD, loved it instantly. They had a different sound than most of the stuff getting radio play at the time, has a raw and alcoholic rough edge to it. They have enough variety to keep the album interesting for the whole playthrough. Has a good combination of country drawl and twang mixed with some classic and indie rock elements. This was the last album that I really enjoyed by them, got a bit too radio friendly for my liking after this one.

I have never really listened to Kings of Leon, despite them being adjacent to many groups I like a lot. I had the time to listen to this album more than once, and I'm glad I did...the more I listened to it the more I liked it.

Got some indie sleeze vibes. Chill album. These guys are way better than their radio hits make them seem.

I get the hate for kings of Leon. I could live happily never hearing sex on fire again. I had this album when it came out (way before sex in fire), and I really liked it. Rock, southern blues, brash, ballsey. it was just a bit different to what else was out there. The thing is there a pretty damn good band and the fact there still selling out venues and making music backs that up. I personally think this is the best of the albums they have in this list. Not sure they warrent 3 either

Lot of people hating on this album. I own it, I've always liked it and I never particularly noticed the horniness others have commented on - oops. I like early Kings of Leon as the sound is a lot more raw than their later more polished (and chart-friendly) work. This to me is an album that's here for a good time, not a long time, and I'll pick it up again occasionally. Great for a car journey.

Could be a 5 maybe? Kinda like a folk indie vibe. Feels like arena rock

7/10 Favorite: The Bucket

Excellent album, one of my absolute favorites. Early Kings of Leon is just so good. What a fun rocking album, I love the garbled up lyrics and dirty guitar sound, it all works well. Aha Shake is a really good stepping stone to Only by the Night, which is their all time greatest effort. I may be rockin' to KoL for the rest of the day now.

It's a more chill style rock, but there's an intensity with certain sounds that gives it that deep energy without having to flood the composition. It really tickles my brain, honestly. Milk is the quinetessential song showing off everything I like. The singer's voice is a little more unconventional, but it's more unique than grating. I just feel like this is the type of sound that my brain latches onto. Something about the chords, the notes, the timing sends me-- shame the album loses its speed by the end of it :~( On a second listen, I can see the weaknesses of the music, but there's enough good here

Good, solid rock and roll from three Tennessee brothers and a cousin. Strong guitar and power drums. Would I have liked it more if I understood more than 10% of the lyrics? Maybe. But I'm still giving it a 4...

I love this!! Sue me!!

Rad. Reminiscent of early Springsteen fast talk—yeah I'm getting in his car bye

Hard to separate the nostalgia from the actual music. But this one still rocks for me.

Super fun indie album with a little hint of garage rock. Catchy, sweet, and great listen. I like the variety it gives of soft and heavy songs. Nothing crazy or new, but I'm definitely returning.

I've listened to lots of KoL, but coming back to them years later you can much more clearly hear the inspirations. One part Stones, one part QoTSA, all parts that milennial rock sound, it's a pretty easy and fun album, if somewhat bloated by filler. Fav tracks: Pistol of Fire, The Bucket, Razz, Four Kicks

Þetta var bara nokkuð gott. Nokkur góð lög en svo líka bara skemmtileg lög að hlusta á.

I enjoyed this album! They’re clearly very mix of rock with a bit of a bluesy, maybe a touch of country influence, sounds really good. It is fun to listen to with a fun, high energy vibe.

The singer's voice is grating for some, but I'm mostly OK with it. This album has some good tracks, in particular King of the Rodeo and Four Kicks. Kind of borderline 3-4 but I'm generous today.

Slow night, so long - 4 King of the rodeo - 4 Taper jean girl - 5 Pistol of fire - 3 Milk - 3 The bucket - 5 Soft - 3 Razz - 4 Day old blues - 3 Four kicks - 4 Velvet snow - 3 Rememo - 3 Where nobody knows - 4

Sympa!

way better than iwould have expected

very nostalgic, love this album

Not a bad album to listen through. I enjoyed hearing the singles, which Four Kicks is my favourite KOL track anyway. A few hidden album track gems as well. As rock and roll should be - short and to the point songs making the album done and dusted in just over 35 minutes.

Wasn’t familiar with this album. Will listen again

I liked it, very different to their usual stadium anthems, but had some great tracks on here

Excellent album. I love their sound. Timeless.

Fair play, I’ve been enjoying these Kings of Leon albums. Another good one. The Bucket has always been an underrated song of theirs, way better than the main hits. Simpsons: No

I’d be tapping my feet if someone turned it on, but won’t be my go to when I get the aux.

Probably not a great album, score is just pure nostalgia

Ive never been a Kings fan and as a result never really listened to them. However, I found this album rather enjoyable. Catchy, heartfelt and good variety. I think its the latter, more pop orientated King's I dont like. This album had thay more rustic, rock feel. A good liste.

I like the originality and simplicity of some of the riffs.

This kind of music takes me back to a certain time and place that just feels right. I'm no Kings of Leon stan, but I've always enjoyed their music and sound. This one gets a thumbs up from me.

Like it. Earlier stuff

The music is great, but the vocals carry Kings of Leon to true excellence. And today I learned they're three brothers and one cousin!

Nice bit of rock that had me wanting to tap my foot or bob my head along to it, without remembering too much of what any song actually was.

I caught the Kings of Leon on the tour for this album, at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, and what a superb gig it was. I took my son along, too. Back then, the band still had their signature grittier, rock sound, possessed attitude in spades and they rocked. "Aha Shake Heartbreak" is a better arranged and produced album than their debut ("Youth & Young Manhood"), and is the more consistent of the two, showing a notable degree of variety. The songs are tighter, and the quality remains high throughout. Their first two albums still remain my favourites of theirs. I’ve noticed that the vocals have received a lot of stick on the reviews for this '1001' generator, though not from me! They are certainly distinctive: raw and raspy, with a great Southern drawl from Caleb Followill, but they perfectly suit the music, and nobody else sounds quite like him. I’ve always considered the rhythm section to be one of the finest, and Matthew Followill’s lead guitar work is exceptional, featuring catchy riffs throughout. This is a fine album, with stand-out tracks including "Slow Night, So Long", "King of the Rodeo", "Taper Jean Girl", "The Bucket", "Soft", "Day Old Blues", and a wonderfully unhinged "Four Kicks". It easily rates at four stars, just missing a five star rating. 1 "Slow Night, So Long" (5/5) 2 "King of the Rodeo" (5/5) 3 "Taper Jean Girl" (5/5) 4 "Pistol of Fire" (4/4) 5 "Milk" (4/4) 6 "The Bucket" (5/5) 7 "Soft" (5/5) 8 "Razz" (4/4) 9 "Day Old Blues" (5/5) 10 "Four Kicks" (5/5) 11 "Velvet Snow" (3/5) 12 "Rememo" (4/4) 13 "Where Nobody Knows" (4/4) Total - 58 Average - 4.46 168/1001 92/168 albums reviewed were new to me.

I liked this one. Great background music that also was sending me back to early highschool vibes. Will listen again.

Possibly the best KOL album, this rocks along like a good 'un. Plenty of highlights to choose from (Slow Night, So Long, Taper Jean Girl, Pistol of Fire, The Bucket, Four Kicks, and Velvet Snow, to name but six - and that's practically half the album right there), Great stuff.

So much fun and so many memories. Glad it holds up after all this time.

Thought this was pretty solid. 3.9

Definitely my favorite KOL album. I got into this one around 15 years ago or so, whenever the band really blew up with the hits off of Only By The Night. I think this album is primarily a celebration of debauchery, a subject I was into at the time. I felt a connection to the brothers Followill and their cousin, as I’m also a preacher’s kid who couldn’t wait to let loose once I left home. Slow Night, So Long was probably an intro to the band for many people, and to me it’s the ultimate KOL song even if Sex On Fire and Use Somebody were major hits. From there, the album doesn’t necessarily have major highlights for me, but it’s a consistent listen without any major stinkers. KOL has embraced mediocrity for a while now, but this album is a fun drunken romp.

I only knew the billboard chart kings of Leon before this . This early southern garage rock stuff is awesome.

Some people call it alt rock. I call it good music

In my review of Only By Night by Kings of Leon I stated that I liked Aha Shake Heartbreak more than Only By Night. That has not changed, though I do recall enjoying Aha Shake Heartbreak slightly more than this. Still, this is what I think of when I think of Kings of Leon. The lead singer has a similar cadence on many of the songs and there is a more garage-rock version of the Strokes type of sound coming out of the speakers. This is what would happen if the Strokes were from the South and I do enjoy this less mainstream version of the band. This may be my favorite Kings of Leon album, which makes it sound like I am a huge fan of the band, which I do not consider myself to be. Regardless, I think this should be the Kings of Leon record that should be heard to get a feel for what the southern version of early 2000's garage rock sounded like.

# Album Name: Aha Shake Heartbreak # Artist: Kings of Leon # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Wait, this isnt the album with sex on fire?! Thats rather surprising. I assume its lingering on here somewhere if this thing is on. Very good album from the kings of leon. Some solid singles too. Doesnt quite hit a 5 for me. # Top Tunes: KotR / Taper jean girl / milk / bucket / 4 kicks # Would I listen to it again? Yes

One digs KOL – for the rough edges and raffishness, the quality of the vocals, which sound purely rock, ancient and primal, plus the melancholia that drapes nearly every song, including the bangers. The later records have always seemed unfairly maligned – they don't seem overproduced or slick, or not any more than the excellent hooks merit. Southern-friend Strokes has always been right, though one has a strong preference for KOL, of reasons of authenticity, especially relative to the fully contrived Strokes (though perhaps one has a pro-South bias, being Southern oneself). Best cuts: opener, "Taper Jean Girl," "The Bucket," "Soft," "Day Old Blues" and "Where Nobody Knows." They were really a breath of fresh air, weren't they? And how all three KOL records got axed, one has no idea.

I get the hate (kinda) but I will always have a soft spot for KOL. The soundtrack to my college years.

I don't get the hate for Kings of Leon at all. Sure, they sold out and went after playing arenas, but we can hardly blame them for that. Before then their first 3 albums were fire, and demonstrated a fast development from straightforward high energy southern rock to more interesting song structures. Whilst this isn't my favorite from them, and it's definitely pretty testosterone-driven, there are some great songs here and no skips for me.

I previously listened to Kings of Leon that had come up during this exercise. I enjoyed this album a lot. It is rock with an indie sound, but the songs are good. I would listen to this again for sure.

Nostalgia good actually mid

Good stuff

I liked it except for Day Old Blues which sounded like my baby was talking

A beautiful listen as always, some bands just have a sound that takes off and does its own thing

I love the Kings and this is very good - I let it run twice. But they have made much better stuff on later disc's.....

Snappy, brisk, and fun

First time hearing this band other than the song they had on Guitar Hero. Really liked this. Reminds me of the Meat Puppets a little.

I've always really liked this band. A lot of their stuff sounds the same, but that sound is so distinctly them. While their newer stuff doesn't catch my attention, I like their older stuff a fair amount

questi so bravi, gradevoli

En skiva jag lyssnat svinmycket på. Älskar soundet. Tycker det är melodisk och varierande. Återkommer då och då till KoL. En annan skiva (because of the times) är en given femma, den innehåller svårt många bra låtar.

Really good but not my favorite of theirs.

It was cool

I like this more than I would have thought going into it. It sounds very much of its time. Razz is the first real miss. The back half of the album is not as good.

I know this band gets a lot of bad reviews sometimes, but this has fond memories for me. I also still think their take on southern Rock holds up pretty well. It's not deep, but it's fun and energetic.

An unexpected delight. I forgot that I have a relationship with this album. I used to listen to it quite a lot in the 00's. Great guitar led songwriting. Some excellent bass writing. These guys were so much better before they learned to sing in English

When I listened to Only by the Night I said I would save a 5 for this album. But it's not that good. These guys brought a new style and energy to rock music, but it's still a little raw and all over the place. Lead vocals in particular are a little screechy and they're still figuring out melody on this sophomore effort. I really think their next album (Because of the Times) is when they hit their stride. But they were starting to figure out here and there is a lot to like. Of the rockers I particularly like Slow Night So Long, Taper Jean Girl, Pistol of Fire, The Bucket, Four Kicks, and Velvet Snow. I kind of like King of the Rodeo and Razz. Of the softies, I like Milk and Day Old Blues. It's between the other two of their albums on this list, a 3.5, but I'll round up because I genuinely like this band.

Ok, this is my third Kings of Leon album, and my initial reaction to seeing it pop up was that the 1001 people really tried to make Kings of Leon a thing. Three different album attempts, all removed from the 1001. I gave the previous albums a 2 and 3 and initially thought this was going to be a 3, but gotta admit it really grew on me. Even Day Old Blues, which annoyed the crap out of me the first time I heard him repeating "day old day old day old" got caught in my head and I even started to dig it. So, I think I'm going for the 4. Still too weird to go higher, but this album is a good bop. Favorite tracks: King of the Rodeo, Pistol of Fire, The Bucket, Where Nobody Knows (Wiki says it's a bonus track, but it's on the UK release which came out first so I'm including it).

Musically, I found this album interesting and solid. But it seems to me that the lead vocalist is just checking a box. It's as if an imposter is on vocals, and he is trying to be engaging while knowing all along he's a poser. 3/5 mostly because the music is solid.

Enjoyed but not over the moon

Initially I thought this was going to be another mediocre album. Alas, there was something off centre about it I quite enjoyed.

3.7 Ahhh, I haven't listened to this since my uni days. Nice to revisit. One of those bands I liked more because other people did, but I could/can see the merits. It's downfall comes with too many weak tracks dotted here and there, the last two in particular which sees the album peter out with a wimper. However, the first two track combo, coupled with the best White Stripes song that wasn't written by the White Stripes (four kicks), see it over the line for a decent score.

Kings of Leon are a weird band. Fun fact, my first ever concert was a Kings of Leon/ Black Keys co-headliner tour that my dad took me too. Anyways, Kings of Leon is a band where I never complain if one of their songs comes on shuffle but this is the first time I've ever listened to a full album from them. It was a good listen but I don't think I'll ever go out of my way to listen to it again. 7/10

I've heard Kings of Leon described as "the Southern version of The Stokes," which I think is fitting. This record kind of has those palm muted punchy guitar riffs and fuzzy vocals, but then it has that really charismatic / playful style of singing and playing that you hear in a lot of southern rock and country. Especially at a time when indie rock was at peak levels of pretentiousness, this kind of breaks down that barrier and is a little more approachable. I like almost every song on this, but a lot of them kind of blend together and start to sound the same. I think this is one that you need to repeat listen to kind of break down those nuances. This was fun! I'm a sucker for all things 2000s indie.

By the time of Aha Shake Heartbreak, Kings of Leon were surely looking as though they could become the frontrunner standard bearers of the Noighties rock revival, with its short but sweet, all killer no filler collection of stompers. And there is plenty here to enjoy and take note of as the songs find its way around one's ear and settles itself in there, making them hard to forget. Aha, aha. Favorites: Slow Night, So Long, King of the Rodeo, Taper Jean Girl, Pistol of Fire, The Bucket, Soft, Day Old Blues, Rememo.

decent record, first kings of leon album i’ve heard, it’s strange hearing the vocalist sing a song that isn’t use somebody, i enjoyed it overall, good stuff

Interesting

Some really good songs in this album, and a couple of quirky ones, overall I really enjoyed it

I remember really liking this album back in the day, but it's been a while since I've heard it. Excited to get back into it. UPDATE: Alright, still a great album! Fun bluesy rock songs that don't feel too derivative. Caleb's voice is really unique and I think helped them stand above the other throwback rock acts of this period. "Four Kicks" is probably my favorite song, it has such a good spot on the tracklist where it comes out swinging after "Day Old Blues" and just kicks your teeth in.

Much preferred to the Arena rock they become later. A fun album with a distinct sound. "Soft" a standout track. Would give it 3.5 stars if I could.

I wasn't familiar with their earlier work. It's a little less polished, but I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

I owned a digital copy of this in that odd period before Spotify but after we stopped buying CDs. And like many of those albums from that period, totally forgot it existed. Still rocks although doesn't really have any "hits." Unexpected to see it here.

God, these guys were so good right before they turned so lame. 4/5

One of my favorite bands of all time! This is such a good first album! It really is just a great album!

Really good album! I was was a fan of Kings of Leon at the time this was released, and I think this album represents when they were at their peak and making interesting music. They really lost me after their next album (Because Of The Times) when they cashed in and began to make soulless, bland, mainstream radio rock. But good for them I guess. 7.5/10

22/1001 I have had many encounters with Kings of Leon, from their giant hits, to some of the b-sides and always enjoyed their music. But I’ve never actually listened to a full album of their’s and none of the songs on this album sounded familiar. I really enjoyed this record, it was raw but still had great musicianship, vocals, and lyrics. It was kind of short and left me wanting more, but that’s a good thing to me. The arrangement was fantastic, one song flowed into the next seamlessly at times to where I had to see off in fact the track had changed. 4 seems a bit too low, but this wasn’t a perfect 5. 4.25/5.

Enjoyed that!

Kind of surprised at how much hate there is in the top reviews, this is a fun album. I definitely prefer these tunes to some of their hits that would come later. I’m a massive Use Somebody and Sex on Fire hater, but Four Kicks and The Bucket definitely got a lot of play on the old iPod back in the day.

Great bass tone and riffing, functional supplemental guitar melodies, and okay vocals. Each instrument works individually and together. Does a good job of sounding new and modern without sounding dated unlike other albums from the early 2000s that either sound derivative or incredibly stylized to the time period. My only hesitation is the slightly disruptive vocals that distract from the otherwise interesting instrumentation. I also like that the album feels like a contiguous entity rather than a set of songs put together. There are some softer songs as well that add nice break in pace from some of the more upbeat and intense sections.

Interesting and fun(except for “Milk”) alt blues rock.

I honesly love this album they seem kinda lame and bro-y and all about chicks and getting laid. Im also certain based on the content of their songs they should have gotten cancelled at somepoint in their career but i cant stop listenting to that rodeo song.

I'm not sure how this is a 'greatest' but I love it. I'm going to come back for this one. 4/6

Back when Kings of Leon were still interesting. I think their first album is easil their best, but this one still has a lot of great riffs, along with the blues and garage rock influence. It was cool when I was 16 and it's still cool now.

Before 2008's Only by the Night, I only knew "Four Kicks" and "On Call," and really liked them. Then everything changed with Only by the Night. I loved it, and everyone suddenly knew who Kings of Leon was. The next year, a friend lent me his copies of their first 3 albums, and I discovered that early Kings of Leon is probably the only major exception to my blanket dislike of Southern Rock. I thought these guys were just going to keep getting better and better. They are now instead my primary example of a band who was so much better before they made it big. I am not surprised to see Aha Shake Heartbreak on this list, and it has one of my absolute favorite songs by this band in "King of the Rodeo." Some great songs back-to-back on here referencing the singer's hair loss, which is presented so matter of factly that it's just so unexpected and strange (contrasting with Rivers Cuomo opening 2008's hit single "Pork and Beans" with the immortal line "They say I need some Rogaine to put in my hair" as a part of a larger point that he's unconcerned with haters). In fact, I like the rest of the album so much that I often forget that "Day Old Blues" is also here.

Very good, I think they got better later, even though they ended up making the same album again and again at least 3 times. Solid stuff but not their best by any stretch

maybe my favorite Kings of Leon era: Caleb explicitly getting haircuts from Tennessee Mountain dwellers. Do I care that most of lyrics are nonsensical? Not one bit, because the background to it is rock and roll in its purest ~ fun

Listened to this a lot when I was 15. I still enjoyed it. Not sure why it’s on the list though. It’s just your above-average mid-2000s ‘indie’ rock album.

First? 3,5 /5 Again? 4/5

+/- Indiscernable vocals mask cringeworthy lyrics + Great energy/pacing + On a -6 degree day I'd take this over The Strokes - Their turn to more radio friendly hits means this is probably the last KoL release I'll listen to

Kings of Leon is underrated by a lot of people, including myself. I always forget about them until I'm listening to them, but they're really good. They have some Doors vibes, as well as some hints of the British Invasion. The lead singer's voice reminds me of the guy from Needtobreathe. So good.

Before they turned to 💩

New to me and I like it.

3.5 rounded up - I like the vibe and all but it did blur into itself a bit

Great album

Bucket is excellent. Good record. Good band.

You know what, I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected

Really good album

Kings of Leon are talented all around. They have an energy and a flow that’s real easy to settle into. Not sure if this album is some of my fav from them but everyone is so good at what they are doing and you can hear it. 3.5 for me but gonna round up.

This sounded like I was in the room with them while they were recording the album

Can’t hate on this it’s like 3.51 stars, so rounding up

Forgot how great this album was. Brought me back to a nostalgic time in my early twenties being a bum loser in Austin.

Wow...I really liked this.

Can’t really understand what he’s saying but catchy songs

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Slow Night, So Long; King of the Rodeo; Taper Jean Girl; Soft; Razz; Velvet Snow; Remomo; Where Nobody Knows Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Not entirely sure why these guys are getting such a bad wrap in these top reviews. It's good! Maybe didn't need multiple early Kings of Leon albums on here but they're good! I almost gave this one a five out of pure spite!

Still good. Basically Creedence for the naughties. Loads of good songs on here. Some tasty bass lines, particularly Slow Night, So Long. After this they were never the same again. Lost all their lovely grit.

Not bad, not great.

I can see why people don't like them; but also see why they got so popular. Good catchy tunes

Not their best album, but a couple of great tracks in The Bucket and Four Kicks. I like the vocals, I think they go with the sound, but can see why some don’t like his voice.

Is this twenty years ago....crikey. Good party music and bucket makes me want to throw beer around.

That was a fun album. Some different styles a feelings to the songs. I would like to listen again sometime.

4 kicks jumped out - I preferred this earlier sound of theirs rather than what their sound became

Pretty impressed. I've not really listened to much of KOL, but will rectify that after listening. Pretty talented song writers.

Not too bad. A few numbers that I liked in there.

Some good stuff...would listen to it again.

I recall getting into this album 3 or 4 years after it was first released, maybe around the time of the subsequent release of Only By The Night. This album feels a bit more raw and contemplative. Good stuff

Just a good garage rock album that gets better with each listen. Really like the bass on this album.

Wild, weird and pretty rootsy, one digs this quite a bit (and not just for the backstory) but wonders if this is best KoL for this list, though all of them seem to have been exed by editors (putting KOL in the excellent company or Radiohead, The National, War on Drugs). Speaking of those bands, that's the comparison set for this group, not ABB and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Vocals are truly distinct and the bass playing first rate. The wave of melancholy that washes over so many songs is right up one's alley. It's strong throughout but maybe lacks a hit that would make it stand out against some of the later records. And better than the Strokes for not being pre-packaged.

I really liked this - Only By The Night was a really forumative album for me, but I'd never delved into any other KOL material. This album whiffs of the mid 2000s, and generally has a really comfortable and content feeling to it that modern albums never seem to have.

Liked it a fair amount 8/10

I downloaded this album when it came out, so there's some nostalgia with it, but I still enjoyed most all of it. I get his voice is not great, but it works with this.

“Aha Shake Heartbreak” was Kings of Leon’s second album, and showed signs of musical maturation, but no advancement in lyrical maturation. I love their music. I often don’t love their lyrics. I keep thinking it must come back to their upbringing as the children of a traveling pentecostal preacher, with all the complications of repressed urges in repeated new environments that came with that. Now with their adult freedom accentuated by a rock and roll lifestyle, everything is about sex. About girls they’ve slept with. About girls they want to sleep with. About the girl they slept with who’s lactose intolerant. About the girl they want to sleep with if only they could get their whiskey dick up. “Milk” and “Soft” sound great. But their lyrics are dumb. Their sex probably wound up on fire because of an STI. Gritty garage blues rock - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️; Lyricism - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ or less. A band that could have been so much more.

This is a good album, but out of their first 4 this is their weakest. I’m still going to give 4 though

Love it. I only knew them from their boring arena-pop. Turns out they once wanted to do more than just sell tickets to sheep.

Love it

Definitely something I'd listen to again

Remember when they did actual good songs

Always great to get a reminder of why a massive band became massive in the first place

Nice enough. It does sound “southern”.

Very good! Excellent rock album from 2000s. Still sounds fresh even after 20 years!

Another banger of an album from Kings of Leon. Peeters off a bit towards the end though

Ah the soundtrack of my 23rd summer. Holds up pretty well I think.

Oh look, the album cover has a vagina flower. I have this on CD somewhere and actually quite like it. Odd accent aside, this has mostly good vibes and gets you into it.

kind of a tough album to rate because his voice kinda sucks but it also really works with most of the songs so we’ll go 4. good album but no songs stood out

This is my favourite KoL album, I think KoL early albums are very underrated, this is clearly offset by how overrated sex on fire and use somebody are, I can see why they get a lot of hate. But I think this is the one album you should listen to to get what KoL were about before having a go at arena rock, it’s not a masterpiece but a soild 4/5 album.

Good stuff. Bluesy rock always hits the right spot.

This might've gotten 5 stars if they had decided on a different lead singer. Sheesh.

Not bad.

For what it is, it's very good. No technical notes but I like the overall vibe. Even though I wouldn't say the vocalist is a particularly good singer, he perfectly matches the energy of the album. I also like his weird accent. Also, it's not very important but I appreciate when the band and the album have cool names. Aha Shake Heartbreak by the Kings of Leon just sounds like it'll be good even if you've never heard of them.

The singer has a way with words and by that I mean I don’t know if he knows how words are pronounced. Jokes aside they have an addictive sound that borders on folk rock with a bit heavy rock. I’ve never heard this album and only know them from their super popular album but I see that they had fame even before that. Funny though that I enjoyed basically every song that was in the million view range on this album and didn’t really like the popular ones. 8/10

Liked this. I heard this band was bad, but this album is quite good. I listened to a bit of their other albums and it seems this is the only one that's for me though. 3.75/5

their first and only good album

Why couldn't they just keep making them like this?

I'm one of those sickos who doesn't mind the song Sex on Fire, but I completely understand why it seems to be the bane of those listening to rock radio in the mid-2000s. However, this seems to be a bit more bluesy, and while that isn't usually my cup of tea, this has a similarity to other garage rock acts of the 2000s such as the Strokes where I actually enjoy it a little bit. His voice takes some adjusting, but the grooves are all accounted for, and while it can be repetitive, no song is ever with you for more than four minutes, so it flies by. This is an album I can appreciate just for its respect of the listeners time and energy level. I wouldn't say it has something for everyone, but it seems just safe enough to be cool, Summer vibes, and I can vibe along with it.

I only knew their 2 big hits before this, and its nothing like those. Enjoyed them way more than I thought i would. Sounds to me like a mix of strokes meets ac/dc (at least on vocals) meets arctic monkeys or something.

The singing is the weakest part of an otherwise solid alt rock record that has strong hints of garage rock and southern revival. Album is at it's best when it's upbeat and harder-driving than when it's more calm and slowed down. Standouts are "Taper Jean Girl", the musically interesting "Razz" and "Four Kicks".

Takes me back to my youth. Right in their pomp.

Not as big of a fan of this one as the album prior to this but still a good listen for me

This is good stuff. Peak 90's guitar rock, but with a kick ass blues rock rhythm section. I enjoy it every time.

4.4 - Love this album and have always thought it was great. Not sure why they tailed off

Not going to win any cool points here, but I think this is a really quite good album. I remember renting it from the library and ripping it to my computer and then listening to King of the Rodeo on repeat. I just can't fight it, its so hard not to singalong to The Bucket. Fave Tracks: Slow Night So Long, King of the Rodeo, The Bucket, Day Old Blues, Four Kicks 4.2/5

Back when Kings of Leon were dirty and fun!

For a few years Kings of Leon were one of the most interesting US bands. Aha Shake Heartbreak is gritty, fast and fun - and Followill (the lead singing one) is a powerhouse whose distinct vocal is enough in itself to make them stand out from the crowd.

Still liking the energy and southern twang, but some of the songs fall a little short to deserve full marks.

I really enjoyed reading the lyrics as I was listening!

Guay, agradable.

What a shocker. These guys annoyed the fuck out of me and anyone who was anti-pop rock top 40 in the early part of this century. Who knew that had produced such a complete and concise product in their early years? One that stays fresh for the duration and kept surprising as we listen...?

Couple bangers, couple sleepers, couple snoozers. Nostalgic for me but not entirely in a good way. 3.6/5

Pretty damn food stuff. Wasn’t expecting to enjoy this

I can’t lie, I enjoyed this album quite a bit. Sometimes you’re just in the mood for some nice tunes!

Favourite tracks: taper jean girl; king of the rodeo; the bucket; four kicks

Taper Jean Girl apparently has explicit lyrics? I'm not sure I got it. Then there's the implicit lyrics... Anyway, this song also carries the title of the album, which I don't really understand. It's got good energy, distinctive sound. Overall pretty decent. Even without any bona fide hits.
