Reviews (page 4 of 7)
I remember liking this album back in the day, but coming back to it now, it really doesn’t age that well. I really like his voice and their vibe, but his voice on a slow song is just not it. It’s a soft 3 for me but probably could be a 2. Hi! Geege here! I saw them live once and they rocked, but the lead singer was forgetting lyrics. Which was sad. I’m a stickler for lyrics. Anyways. This album isn’t their best imo. V repetitive.
Forgot how hard it is to understand the lyrics on this album. Regardless, Taper Jean Girl and The Bucket will always remind me of driving around in my old Milennia with the windows down without a care in the world. Still not my favorite of their albums, but not a band I’ll ever complain about coming up on the list. A solid three all around.
VERY hard to understand the singer as of now good for background listening but the song milk is very good as well as some others like Taper Jean Girl. Very catchy song and instrumentally quite good. I wish i could understand the singer more but that’s his style yk. I do hate day old blues though its just very annoying. Had potential to be good with the acoustic intro but it became REALLY annoying. Like a 7/10
I'll shock you by not absolutely panning this. It was serviceable enough, but I don't think there is anything here that would suggest they would go on to be a huge festival headlining behemoth. Just pretty run of the mill garage rock. I maintain that Because Of The Times is the only truly worthwhile album they've made.
A couple of good songs; otherwise, frankly not that enjoyable.
3/5
Fun but not super fun. I actually like his weird voice. I like the indie vibe with a southern rock twist. I feel like it's a bit unique. My biggest critique is a lot of the riffs are really simple and kinda boring but there are some that work pretty well.
It’s ok
Their Heart is in the right place.
It Was OK. Un par de canciones buenas
I got Only By Night earlier and that was probably the worst album I've recieved so far. This album being actually decent has surprised me more than any album so far.
their first two albums got a pretty bad wrap (by critics), and I hated everything they released since this album as much as the next person. I still think it's underrated. I forgot how much i enjoyed this when it came out, so it was fun to revisit. must-listen before I die? definitely not.
Solid start to finish but nothing made me hit repeat.
Enjoyable, but in a kinda generic mid-2000s way.
The heck are these reviews? One review starts with the sentence "Good music." then drops a 2-star bomb on us. And the top 6 upvoted reviews are all 1 or 2 stars. Seems people can't handle old-school rock or weird vocals in the 21st century. This album is solid – and I say that as somebody who's never heard any of their material. I gave some of their biggest hits a listen after finishing Aha, and all of them drew a complete blank. So I'm not comparing this to their later material. Aha Shake Heartbreak is good, short, sweet, punchy. Not particularly memorable, but good hooks (especially in my 3 chosen key tracks, Taper Jean Girl / The Bucket / Soft). Slower tracks like Day Old Blues and Milk to mix up the pacing a little bit. Listen with headphones and talk an empowered walk while listening to this record. It vastly improves the sound. The singer sounds like he isn't putting much effort in. Sluggish drunken drawling doesn't usually do the job. The instruments, which are almost aggressively human-sounding (much unlike most popular music from the Kings' contemporaries), generally make up for the vocals. Great bass and guitar playing, though pretty simple. Straightforward drum patterns. I reckon you wouldn't get much out of this album upon a second or third listen; this is a problem the White Stripes have as well. I'm not claiming the Kings of Leon are bringing anything new to the table. But if they sound good and I enjoy essentially every track, they're getting at least a 3. Then +1 star for the energy and the willingness to put out a relatively acoustic album in the electronically-charged atmosphere of 2005. (It'd be even tougher to make it big with a sophomore album like this in 2025.) And -1 star for the singer. 3/5 Key tracks: Taper Jean Girl, The Bucket, Soft
Good rock music but his voice is too nasal
They have better albums imho
Sometimes the vocals could grate, but it had some fun moments.
Overall a solid album. It has a couple of great songs- but also a couple that I feel aren't quite up to par.
I will admit I read the reviews before I listened having not spent time with this album previously. I think the critics are too harsh. It’s full of decent tunes.
A good time, but didn't save any songs.
Pretty good stuff. Never would have thought I'd half enjoy a KOL album
Pretty decent stuff. If you like some of their other stuff, this is a pretty easy listen
this was a pretty good album, although it did take a while for me to get used to the singer’s voice.
It was ok.
KOL's Aha Shake Heartbreak is a solid album, but Calleb sounds horny as fuck, think this album was on the original list as an answer to the Nu-metal being on the mainstream, but this album shows potential of things to come. Southern Strokes indeed. The Bucket and Slow Night, So Long were my highlights
For me, one of those bands that are OK, but just don't break through
Good album. I’ve always kind of been into Kings of Leon, but not to the point where I would say I love them or anything. They are good rock and roll, albeit can be a bit boring sometimes.
Quick, simple, tight guitar. The only song I had to skip was "Milk". That was god awful. The rest was OK to decent. Nothing really stood out to me except "The Bucket". 3.25/5
Nice but not my genre
Verri en frumburðurinn en ekki orðnir jafn hræðilegir og á síðari verkum.
Enjoyable. Like the musical style. Not particularly grabbed by any of the lyrics.
I don't really know what to say about this. It's not bad, it's not good. It's not fun, it's not boring. Just completely unremarkable and average.
Two and one half
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Enjoyed the album however, there were no stand out tracks for me
Great album
Uneven album for me. I liked some of them, disliked others. Mostly due to the singing, which I believe he addresses in the lyrics of one of the songs, oddly enough. I think they'll just be one of those band where I say, "I like some of their stuff." 3.5*, not rounding up.
Interesting voice. Solid rock band. 3 stars
I was grooving to some of these tunes. However none of it stuck with me. Their next album has all the songs I know by KoL and I don't particularly care about any of those ones either
Interesting voice and sound, but a lot of the songs sounded very similar to me.
I like them for singles, but for albums, I don’t think it’s their strong suit.
I enjoyed the music much more than I enjoy Caleb Followill's voice. I don't know what it is, his voice just often annoys me. It's kind of whiny. However, the album was better than I was anticipating, even though I feel that 3 albums by this band is a tad excessive to be included on this list.
It was a fine listen if you like Kings of Leon. It's overall just average musically and didn't really do much for me
This didn't hold up as well as I thought it would. Hard to believe there are three Kings of Leon albums on this list when this is what I remember to be my favorite one from them. If they have to be on this list I guess this is the one, but it's a little "meh"
Their first album is really good, this one is fine, everything after this is awful. What an utter disappointment this band became.
Very raw KoL, i prefer Because of the Times
Three stars just because they were a soundtrack to my teenage years
I’m at a 2.5 that I will bump up to a 3. When we last got Kings of Leon, for “Only By The Night”, I really enjoyed the first 6 tracks on that album. Only 2 of the last 5 clicked for me, and that was enough to buoy it at a 4.5 that I bumped up to a 5, because the soundscapes were still good, and the tracks felt competently safe. Plus, it was a great casual listen – I even listened to it again after I was done with this one, and yeah, that one still holds up really nicely. For this, though? This is significantly worse to my ears, and while the instrumentals are totally fine, I don’t-uh real-a-lay like-ah his voice-uh add-ing an extra sylla-bul-uh on alm-ost ever-ay line here-uh. He really can’t decide what vocal tone he wants to take, and while I absolutely love his energy & more deliberate performance on “Only By The Night”, on here, it feels like a parody, or at the very least, it feels consistently inconsistent in a way that is frustrating as all hell to listen to. Lyrically, this album takes a deep step down too – I’ve been praising a few albums as of late for going for the more local approach instead of taking broad strokes, but these are a little too local, and sort of creepy – I really didn’t need to know that you “accidentally” had sex with a 17-year-old, or you were too soft, or whatever the hell is going on on “Rememo”. It never really finds a foothold, save for maybe 2 or 3 tracks. I don’t wanna rip into this that much, but I just didn’t like this one that much. This album is what happens when an entire project is comprised of the mediocre parts of “Only By The Night”, from a less sharp, less mature, less confident, less commercially driven version of Kings of Leon, and while it’s probably more true to their authentic selves, I don’t think it makes for a very good album. Competent enough, sure, but everything about the lyrics & vocals on this one strike a nerve in a way that feels significantly more grating than anything on that last album. I understand why the other people in my group gave that album a 3, but after hearing this one, I wouldn’t be surprised if they dip down to a 2 or even a 1 here. For me, I’m at a 2.5 that gets bumped up to a 3. I truly don’t think it’s THAT awful; individually, these are fine enough tracks, but as an album, it just sort of shoots itself in the foot as an incohesive project. I vaguely hear the appeal for this album over “Only By The Night”, and why people could rate this higher, but it’s just not my thing, I think. For my tastes, this really, really didn’t need to be on the list. Not in a Haut de Gamme way, but in a “this is really fucking mid” type of way.
Aha Shake Heartbreak had a few strong tracks but lacked the consistency of their debut. There were some truly bad lyrics on this album that took me right out of it. I’m totally down for some dumb lyrics but sometimes it just doesn’t stick for me and that’s fine but this line got me, “She saw my comb over, her hourglass body She has problems with drinking milk And being school tardy She'll loan you her toothbrush She'll bar tend your party Kill me, kill me” Not a terrible album. 3 stars
Music was enjoyable. Not a fan of the vocals at all. Very surprised this would be in the 1001.
I was underwhelmed at first, but the back half of this album really picked up. Love the album cover and this has always been one of my favorite album names. A surprise three. Faves: Pistol of Fire, Milk, The Bucket, Four Kicks.
Kings of Sleeze! They praise the wrong things lyrically, but the music and voice combine to create a winning picture of "modern" rock (I realize this album is twenty years old).
A lot of this felt very samey
Fun album with some good hits. Taper Jean Girl is an all timer though
Fine enough, I was very into Kings of Leon in like, 2008-09 like a lot of people were. That hasn’t really stuck but it’s not bad listening
TBH did not know that they had music before Sex on fire
3.5/5. Before these douchebags sold out. They aren’t douchebags for selling out but apparently they’re assholes in real life.
I was surprised Kings of Leon, of all bands, got more than one album on the list. But here we are. This was fine. I really liked the more stripped down, raw, almost punk/new wave/hard rock sound on this album. That makes sense, given this was before their breakout and only their second album. The vocals are really...bad in places. Namely on "Milk" and "Day Old Blues." "Milk" in particular was almost unlistenable the vocals were so bad. But there's definitely the genesis of a better band here. They just hadn't totally found their identity yet. Knowing that they'd be more solidified later on only makes this a lesser listening experience, and that's not great when the album was already unremarkable. Bummer. Could've been better. Three stars. Standout tracks: Slow Night, So Long, Taper Jean Girl, Pistol of Fire, Soft
Why the hell is this the second Kings of Leon album I’ve encountered. They’re not that good. One was enough. There isn’t anything heinous happening in this album. The breakdown in the opening track is quite nice and feels fresh, actually. I will say, however, that his voice starts to get on my nerves very quickly. It just is not working for me. Everything here is fine, but not good enough to be in the top 1001. 3/5
Instrumentals slap but voice quality is inconsistent to give higher rating
This was alright. I really like Kings of Leon's hit songs, but I didn't recognize any of the tracks on this album -- although the voice and sound of KOL was very present. A couple of tracks were quite catchy and enjoyable to listen to (Day Old Blues, for example), but I found the lead singer's voice to be a little grating after a few songs in a row. Three stars.
I've only ever listened to Mechanical Bull, so this was interesting, to hear some earlier work.
Some decent jams. Couple clunkers. Singer has annoying voice
I generally like them as a band, but I'm not in love with the guy's voice or lyrics. The bass player rocks though.
Bluesy, rocky, jamming. I only knew a little bit about Kings of Leon, mainly their past hits, before listening to this record. Definitely some fun rhythms and jams that they have on here, making it enjoyable to listen to. Not bad overall.
Fine, interesting alt-indie-rock sound -- but probably not something I'll come back to
It's pretty basic, but still catchy and an easy enough listen. His vocals aren't as bad as some people are saying but they aren't exactly on par with Frank Sinatra so it lessens the quality I've seen these guys live about a year ago. I enjoyed it and I'm not that big of a fan of them
Aha Shake Heartbreak is honestly what i expected from a Kings Of Leon album as in its nothing special but still fairly solid. I have only really heard some of the singles from Kings Of Leon so i always got the impression of them being a band that is a pretty obvious choice for any person to listen to. I still got that from this album, but this album definitely had quite a bit of blues elements which i was expecting and not expecting at the same time for some reason. The songs here are fairly good sounding and while not doing anything all too special or unique, they do their job as well as they can. Best Song: Slow Night, So Long Worst Song: Pistol of Fire
You have to be a pretty legendary act to need more than 1 album on this list. I don’t know that KoL deserve that honour…
Definitely some things to like about this album. Energetic songs and enough hooks to keep things interesting the whole album. No song really stood out to me but there weren't any duds on a first listen. I've got a rate a 3, but 3.49999999 would be more appropriate.
3.5 I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Slow night, so long; rememo and where nobody knows we’re my favs. Suprisingly cutting stuff.
3-4
Part of me really wants to like Kings of Leon, the other part of me just can't get that into them.
This was OK but didn't strongly hit me up or down. I think I owe it another listen at some future date.
I just don't think this is anything special... Telling that it isn't on the 1001 anymore.
Such a shame. Not this album — this actually pretty decent. Such a shame about what came after.
Every other song is bleh. I don't really care for the voice but the guitar is good.
Something I did not know about Kings of Leon: they had great success in the UK before breaking out in the US with Only by the Night, despite the band coming from Tennessee. Suddenly it all makes sense as to why there's three Kings of Leon albums on here. Perhaps the most fun of the KoL albums I've heard. Their take on garage rock revival is enjoyable, more than the white stripes anyway, and I didn't mind Caleb Followill's voice on this one. Pretty good.
This was good and fun
Of all the things I thought this album cover would be, I never could have guessed that it was a flower. This album is more than competent from a musical perspective, but the vocals and lyrics don't do much for me. I'm surprised by how recent this album is, even if it does bare a few musical tropes that were popular at the time of release. Hope this album means I'll be getting more stuff from the noughties - I've been drowning in 90s music for the past couple of albums. I enjoyed this more on my second listen. The vocals are pretty alright once you get used to them.
Thanks to this list I have listened to one KoL album every year for the past 3 years. I really got into the other 2 but this one is very hit a miss. Some great moments, some not so great. Faves: Taper Jean Girl, Milk, The Bucket
I had a housemate that played their first album a bunch so I guess I have some nostalgia for that one, but this one, not so much... Nothing massively stood out, and the singer really isn't up to much, is he? Still, it didn't actively irritate... Fave tracks - "Milk" and "The Bucket" both caught my ear with their talk of male pattern baldness, which you don't hear referenced in rock lyrics every day, heh. 🧑🦲
I didn’t mind the album but it’s just not for me
BORING. This smells of toxic masculinity.
Eighteen!? Rolling Stones!?!?
for god's sake enunciate man
eh
Overall, this was actually okay. Nothing new or innovative. It’s fine. It’s pop rock. Won’t listen to this again, though. 3/5
This is well crafted. It's also nothing that demands my attention, so it's a three rating.
Kings of Leon reminds me of Neil Young - some good music brought down by the vocal performance. Of course it is their style and there will be some that love it, it’s all subjective. I have a couple random obscure KoL songs saved on different playlists, but I didn’t really love any on this album. 2.5/5
Tale of two sides - A side was great Bucket and Rodeo are highlights. B side they tried to be the Strokes and it fizzled out a bit. Very much enjoyed the first half 3.25/5
Probably the horniest album by a family of Mormons. This lacks the vibrancy and energy of their debut and the huge singalong choruses of their later work, but still has some pretty fun songs especially lead single The Bucket. Day Old Blues is incredibly annoying though with its incessant yodelling
Pretty solid album from a popular group before they 'blew up'
I really liked this album first time around (and the follow up) but then rapidly lost interest in the KOL post following sex on fire. Listening again after a few years and I am struggling to see the attraction. Musically fine esp the drums - but vocals are a bit grating. Still enjoy Milk, Soft and The Bucket.
Not as good as their first album. Still much better than their subsequent stuff. Part of a straight downward line of quality
I was never super keen on this when it came out but it's short and straightforward early 2000s indie hipster music. I forgot how mumbly the singer was on this record. It gives it charm in some songs and just kind of ridiculous on other songs.
Decent 3/5
it's odd hearing people point to the vocals as a weak point for Aha Shake Heartbreak, as if it isn't what basically prevents this LP from turning into IPA brewery background music to wax your mustache to. musically, the rave ups on each track do nothing spectacular or super memorable that wasn't boringly done by The Black Crowes or better done by The Strokes, but Caleb Followill's yelpy little voice makes him stand out a little. you may consider it annoying, but i consider it, at the very least, engaging. and hey, that's more than i can say about a lot of groups in the practice of playing "REAL GARAGE ROCK" that cuts out the bullshit and makes music from the heart, maaan. sometimes, Cow from Cow and Chicken distracts me from that hokey goal. shame about the rest of their career though. some bands just sorta morph into Cold War Kids no matter how hard they try. Coldwarcinization, they call it. dire shit.
Music is good but the vocals are terrible and don’t fit. There’s no reason for there to be two Kings of Leon albums on the list, and the edge would go to the one with the hits.
Musically, I found this album interesting and solid. But it seems to me that the lead vocalist is just checking a box. It's as if an imposter is on vocals, and he is trying to be engaging while knowing all along he's a poser.
I don't quite get the love for the Kings of Leon. It is a decent album, but nothing revolutionary. 3/5
Not a huge fan of the band - always have loved King of the Rodeo though
This is good but the first couple of listens didn't inspire me. I would listen again but I'm not excited about another listen. The mix was a bit weird - very vocal-forward.
I didn’t like it as much as I hoped I would. Passable, but nothing stands out.
Pretty good rock album, although not as polished as their later stuff, I liked it enough to listen again in a couple years.
First half way better than the last, disappointed
Maybe we did not need to listen to this before dying, but it is good rock and roll
How many albums does this fucking band have in here!? I’m pretty sure this is my third. With that said, I think this is their best here yet. Monotone, but not completely unlistenable and it’s short and sweet!
Full bodied music.
Really? This is what Kings of Leon is like? This is... completely different from what I thought it would be. I thought this would be like theater kid music or something! Although, I'm pretty sure I only thought that because because of that one joke from the glee club episode of Community. But yeah, here we have my first Kings of Leon experience. How do I feel? Confused, I guess? I have problems with this album. I'll start with what is probably the biggest one. I don't like the singing. It's kind of annoying. That's all I'll say about that. The writing also falters at times. Some songs aren't as good as others. The instrumental sound is pretty good though. I didn't love this album, but for what it is, I think it's okay. Maybe the other ones on the list will be better. Low 3/5. I'm on a bit of a 3/5 streak right now. Hopefully that changes soon. It happened the last time I acknowledged it, so maybe the website will do it again!
oh no immediately was put off this as soon as he started singing this was fine and inoffensive. just an album innit. some bops. good background work music
I've never heard early King of Leon, and I thought it was interesting to hear their roots. I don't find it as good as their modern stuff (post Use Somebody), but again it's interesting to listen to. I didn't find anything particularly amazing about this record, but I did enjoy my time with it and I'd have no problem listening to it again or if someone else put it on. 3/5
Voin uskoa, että Jagger olisi antanut vuonna 2005 mitä tahansa ollakseen tässä bändissä: levy on täynnä miksissä hyvin erottuvia sähkökitaroita, romantiikkaa ja milleniaalien maneereita, ja kaiken kustantaa oleellinen "major label"-diili. Eikä bändin menestys ansaitsematonta ole: biisit erottuvat toisistaan, ja joku jäsenistä keksii aika hyviä riffejä. Suosikit: Pistol of Fire, jossa kuuluu rock and roll, ja Milk.
I like kings of Leon but this was sorta meh
Raw like their first album, not quite as good
Yeah, okay, perfectly nice but nothing exceptional.
Leon is ruled by a decent, but not great Monarchial Collective.
Correcto
2.5
Band is rockin’, but the vocalist…know he can do better bc it comes out sometimes, but most of the time it’s pretty grating
This was a good album but I still prefer Only by the Night and if that makes me a basic bitch I guess so be it
Really mixed feelings about this one. I saw these guys a year before this came out, opening for The Strokes. My thought then was that they were just an average opening band, and not even great for that purpose. I saw them again in 2009 at Austin City Limits and was blown away that they had improved greatly, almost to the point of being a different band. You can hear some of the seeds of what would become that better band in this album, but too much of the opening band sound to make it great. If later albums by Kings of Leon are on here, I bet I'll score them higher.
Liked this more than I expected. They’ll get a little more attention from me going forward.
This was fine
I first started paying attention to music reviews/journalism around 2009, when I got a hold of a few issues of Rolling Stone. As such, the 2000isms of this list make a lot of sense to me in the context, for instance, Aha Shake Heartbreak being my 3rd album from the Followills on here. In their 100 greatest albums of the aughts, R.S. rated this one higher than Vespertine, Late Registration & Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, despite all of those having much more general acclaim nowadays. I still remember a cover story in that 'zine dedicated to this band & its members' volatility & alcohol abuse, and I remember thinking 'the "Use Somebody" guys??' Well, the beat-em-up music video for "Four Kicks", the f-bombs & the general raunchiness set the record straight here, in contrast with the slick Only By the Night & the gentler Can We Please Have Fun (not on this generator, it's the album they just dropped this year). Though I may be a Kings of Leon apologist, I didn't take to this album right away. Which is odd, since the logical part of my brain has decided that it's a better-built album than their debut, Youth & Young Manhood. I don't regret the way I listened to it, a city walk on a Sunday morning, though perhaps a relisten in the future with fewer distractions would be valuable. The only song I heard before today is "Taper Jean Girl", which is a decent stomp but I don't find that "haw haw" hook all too compelling. It probably kills when sung live, though. The dogged single-mindedness of Aha is part of what gives it charm, but partly why my brain tuned it out at times. 3.5 HL: "Day Old Blues", "The Bucket", "Four Kicks", "King of the Rodeo" September 22, 2024
good
I liked this album substantially more than their "Only by the Night" album. This is full of originality and is unique among peers like maybe Jack White. Guitar is tight throughout and drums are right there to match. I don't love all the guitar riffs and some of them border on annoying. I'm of two minds for KOL in terms of the vocals, but I'm inclined to vibe with it more than dislike. It is a very unique sound, and maybe an acquired taste. You can hear those vocals almost isolated and pure on "Milk", an excellent track in its own right.
When the second lyric of the album is "She's 17 but I done went and plum forgot it", I know this is going to be a hard album for me to connect with. I like the sound of Kings of Leon, I even like the way Caleb Followill's voice breaks. I just think they need better lyrics.
I can’t believe this album is now 20 years old!! I used to love this, so I am looking forward to giving it another listen, its been a long time. Slow night, so long is great. Its the KOL era I know and love before the haircuts and pop. KOL should have stayed this way. Its a good album, nothing more than a 3/5 Favourite song: King of the rodeo and Bucket Least favourite: Milk Album artwork: Cool cover
Kings of Leon had 3 albums on this list at one point, now they have none. That kind of says it all, it was fine at the time, but turns out they made no real impact and don’t really have much legacy.
Bluesier than I expected. Not as good as the album from a few days ago.
Much like the last Kings of Leon album I got on here, I don't really get it. This sounds like a mid-00s rock album, but so far as I know it's not the first album to sound like this. It feels like they're doing a Strokes impression. Other times, they're doing an impression of a band I like even less. 3/5 It's fine, but not impressive
I was surprised that I kinda liked it
I'm a bit conflicted on this one. There are some songs I really like but I also found myself being ready for the album to end (and it's a short album). I don't think the vocals hold up to present day and sound dated. It's fine. 2.75/5 (5.5/10)
I don’t feel any way about this one way or the other.
I wasn’t familiar with any of these songs but it was a decent 00’s American rock album
Ok album, not their best in my opinion
Every album starts out as a 3, then it's up or down from there. This one just sat there.
I like Kings of Leon...especially early Kings of Leon. I found the songs catchy, with a good sense of melody. I like the dynamics and I especially like the vocals which I find raw and quite unique. This album continues what I had heard on Youth and Young Manhood adding a level of refinement that points to there evolution to come into arena rock stalwarts. 3.5 stars seems about right
This is pretty good, it does all sound a little bit samey but I think it's short and sweet enough to not bring the quality down too much. It doesn't get higher than 3 stars however, as the only standout song was "The Bucket"... and my dad would kill me if I scored this album lower, he loves these guys.
Ok
Nice enough.
Meh
I think they might have a really good energy if I saw them live but this was all a bit samey for me. They’re distinctive but not something I’d think of ever putting on by choice. I tap my toes and dance when their singles come on the radio or at a party but I’m not on it for the long haul.
Another frustrating addition to this list. I have had this album in my collection since it came out. This is definitely their sophomore slump album. If you like the raw energy on this but were underwhelmed by the songs, definitely check out their first record Youth & Young Manhood. They got more polished and produced after this (hard to believe it's the same band on singles like "Sex on Fire"). Agree with the low ratings on this but don't write them off completely.
I expected to hate this. I didn't hate this. Reminded me a bit of The Stooges, though not as good. Also, I don't think I understood a single word dudebro was saying. Still, I dug its ramshackle energy. Terrible cover for the music, though.
It isn't hard to imagine the person who hates this guy's voice, but it's unique and well-used. Musically, it's interesting never gets stagnant.
I’ve heard this album before listening to it now, and it stays as a catchy and very accessible album. Just not the highest caliber album I’ve heard.
Kings of Leon before they sold out and went stadium rock. Good ratio of catchy tunes here.
Back before they were totally shit
Nothing special. Nothing unlistenable. Just another ho hum average album of decent music that didn’t need to be here.
Not my vibe.
This is good pop rock that makes you tap your feet but doesn't really stay with you. I'd have had a few KOL in my time and would have jumped around like an idiot after a number beers to these tracks and so it was a nice trip down memory lane, but the fact that I haven't listened to them in 15 years tell you how valuable this probably is. 3.5 stars rounded down.
Quirky, but energetic.
I've always struggled with Kings of Leon outside of their more popular stuff. I struggled a lot with this album at times, the music just sounds disjointed to my ears. There are also some enjoyable moments, there is musical talent but I just cannot get into it.
I like their style on most songs, but their singer gets on my nerves. I didn't really like Milk and Rememo. The best one was probably Velvet Snow.
3+ Hyvää perusrokettirollia, aksentista pieni plussa.
Favorite Track: Taper Jean Girl
Aight
Lots of growth here over Youth & Young Manhood. They're most of the way to what they would become on Only by the Night...but not quite. This is a good album, but the pieces weren't quite fitting yet. And the audio mix sucks. I mean, you can hear everything; but the vocals (and sometimes the drums) are so much louder than the rest of the tracks. It's pretty grating.
Not gonna lie, not a bad album. Has some fast stuff, rock in it. Didn't stand out to me but was pretty energetic and they didn't have it too long.
Not much here to be honest. Probably a good band to see live in a small club. High energy nonsense. Drumming is pretty good
Cool sounds, then grzhzhzhhzhhhh
Probably not the absolute best Kings of Leon album, but it's alright. There's a couple pretty solid tracks. My problem is KoL tries to take itself WAY too seriously sometimes. It's a rock band, it's not that philosophical. The middle section of this album just tries too hard.
This was decent. Didn't really sound like any of the radio singles which I know Kings of Leon for, which is good as I've never really been a fan of what I've heard on the radio. I would give this another listen in the future; seems like one that will grow on me.
Aha Shake Heartbreak I liked KOLs first album a lot and I liked The Bucket, when it came out and I’m pretty sure I had this album too (although listening to it now I can’t remember any of it), but I think I lost interest around that time. All the elements are there for something I should like - southern rock style guitars, garagey drums, but apart from the run of King of the Rodeo, Taper Jean Girl and Pistol of Fire, andThe Bucket its generally a bit nondescript. It’s not objectively bad it’s just not as good as you feel it should be and kind of passes by without anything to make you sit up and notice. Whether it’s the strength of the songs or a general lack of energy I’m not sure. I do like Ethan John’s production in general and I like the sound of the album, the guitars have a nice tone and I really like the drum sound and its place in the mix. So overall a handful of good songs and a nice sound, but in the main pretty forgettable but fine. I think that makes a 3, a 2 feels a bit low. ⭐⭐⭐️
Couple good songs and a bit boring.
Al principio no me gustó por ser un rock bien básico de los 00's. Pero después se metieron 5 temas a la playlist con un buen nivel individualmente.
Are kings of Leon good enough to have two albums in this list? Not sure
Solid garage rock album. Nothing too sophisticated or groundbreaking. Just solid rock songs with good hooks. Definitely more genuine than some of their later work.
Musically, I was surprised. Lyrically, I was not
IDK the other KoL album but it has Sex on Fire & Use Somebody so I just assumed that was the better one, but this album wasnt that bad actually. It definitely started out hot and sizzled by the end
A two star album feat. The Bucket.
This is the third album by KOL I’ve been fed in two weeks and it’s got me channelling my inner Jeff Winger. “Oh, OK, they’re KOL now? We need a shorthand for Kings of Leon. That’s how fundamental they are”. This is fine. Like the others. Decidedly not essential.
Didn't feel too strongly one way or another about this one.
I’d only ever heard the big songs off this before when hearing KoL was unavoidable whether you wanted to hear them or not. I didn’t then and I still dont really want to now. Its decent an all that, but its all a bit self indulgent for something that lacks anything special or intricate. Quite a few skippable songs and many of the ones that arent skippable dont get much more than a shrug of the shoulders from me. The vocals border on the ridiculous at times. They’re a lot better than their ‘landfill indie’ peers of the time though and there are some good moments often just lacking something (more often than not, the removal of the vocals). Four Kicks still sounds good. 2.5
This appears to be the album halfway between the proper southern rock version of Kings of Leon and the serviceable if underwhelming indie band they were to become. Some great songs on this, mostly the rockier ones, particularly four kicks. Quite a few were fairly standard though, seems like they'd started to emulate all the bands they were touring with. It's very listenable but it's no youth and young manhood. 3.5 but closer to 3.
Found it quite hard to form an opinion on this. The Bucket is a good song. Pretty middle-of-the-road modern rock. Feeling generous. I did not enjoy what Kings of Leon transformed into.
Thought this was a fairly decent but standard rock album. It goes by so quickly I almost forgot I played it. Doesn't do anything that is going to blow your socks off but was worth a listen. Highlights: The Bucket Razz Four Kicks
I remember being really into their first album when it came out. Was completely different to anything coming out at the time. But they fell off my radar subsequently and not listened to them since, side from their huge hits obviously. I haven't listened to that first album in years, but my memory of it is that it was much better than this. I didn't mind this really, but aside from the hits, nothing really grabbed me. Even here they seemed to be ditching what made them interesting in exchange for what would be popular. 3.5 but 3 is fair I think
talented group of musicians but no identity.
I'm sorry, but I honestly have no idea what critics see in Kings of Leon. This is a third album on this list, and it's hard to recognise how it is different from the other ones. The vocal is as annoying as ever, and the music is just systematically average. Hopefully that's the last time I have to listen to their record.
Кайнда найс. Дравово прикольно хайпово. Но особо не моё.
Is this guy speaking another language? No idea but I still dig it.
Inoffensive mid-2000s rock. Absolutely understand how it influenced other groups and how important this group is, but nothing to write home about.
I went through a big KOL phase so this album has lots of nostalgia for me, but, it is forgettable.
Genuinely surprised that there are multiple Kings of Leon albums on this list. They only really hit with one album, and it wasn't until a few years after this one was released. I remember liking their debut when I listened to it from this list. It was very raw, and this one is definitely more polished. I generally enjoy the indie-garage-revival albums of the 2000s and I generally enjoyed this listen. There were some stinkers but overall it was decent. There were some polished acoustic-based tracks on here which I enjoyed. Highlights: Milk, The Bucket
I like Kings of Leon. Haven't listened to them in a while. At some point a lot of their music starts sounding the same.
"Aha Shake Heartbreak" by Kings of Leon is a raw and energetic album that captures the essence of indie rock with a Southern twist. Released in 2004, the album features a mix of gritty guitars, driving rhythms, and frontman Caleb Followill's distinctive vocals. Tracks like "The Bucket," "Four Kicks," and "King of the Rodeo" showcase the band's signature sound, blending garage rock with elements of Southern rock and blues. The lyrics are often introspective and poetic, reflecting on themes of youth, love, and identity. While "Aha Shake Heartbreak" may lack the polish of later Kings of Leon albums, its rough edges and unbridled energy make it a standout in the band's discography.
Best Song: Soft. My favourite vocal performance of the album, particularly as he starts to unwind towards the end of the track. Worst Song: Day Old Blues. I just don't think their musical aptitudes suit this soft-sad ballad. Overall: I can't help but respect how much they've carved out their own little niche with this album. Previously, I was only familiar with Kings of Leon's megahits and wrongly assumed that kind of overwrought dramatism was their M.O. Colour me pleased to find out that they have a rawer, more indie-rock vibe. In particular, I really like how they weren't afraid to use unusual vocal rhythms and melodies.
Solid but not life changing. Their first album is better.
3 sterren voor de stem van de zanger waar ik nog steeds een zwak voor heb. Verder niet echt vernieuwend.
I had heard of the Kings of Leon, but never really heard their work. My feelings on this album are mixed. I thought some of the music was very clever, but the vocals and lyrics were a bit much for me. I thought that, at times, they were trying too hard to sound cool or something and didn't have a natural feel. Instead of just enjoying the music, the performance would pull me out of the music and I was thinking about how he was singing and not what he was singing. I will probably try to listen to listen to some of their other work and see how I like it. Maybe they will calm down in later efforts.
Slow Night, So Long // The Bucket //
I like KOL but this is a little out of place on this list, it's a solid indie rock album but not ground breaking. Still it's a genre I enjoy and has some tracks that give me a nostalgic vibe, so 3 stars
something something
In general I like the garage rock revival bands from the early 2000s. KOL has 3 brothers, sons of a preacher, which makes it more interesting as a group. The music here is much more interesting than the vocals. I don’t mind when vocals are difficult to understand, as long as they add a layer of complexity or mystery to the overall composition. But these vocals nearly overwhelm the songs with what sounds like drunk Cajun extras from “The Waterboy.” Music 4, vocals 2, overall 3.
Decent. Fine, but not compelling enough to make me curious about what their other albums sound like.
This one surprised me. I didn’t exactly love it, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I’d heard KOL compared to The Strokes, and I thought that was a crazy comparison based on the monster hits Use Somebody and Help, My Sex is On Fire!!! But this sounded very much like a Southern Strokes. Not sure if I needed that but it’s definitely better than Somebody Use My Flaming Sex.
Pretty OK
I was expecting all sex on fire and stuff but got prosaic and limp like gear.
Moments of quite ok listenableness. Not really a fan of KOL.
Bättre än de andra kings of leon albumet
didn't really stand out. 2.7/5 listened 2x
smooth. 3.8
offensively mediocre.
Meh. Not real big on the vocal style. 2.7
It was okay
Un album sorti à une époque où le sexe de Kings of Leon était encore loin de flamber. Il était même d'après certaines sources plutôt ennuyeux voire pantouflard.
Lisse et sans intérêt, comme d'hab avec nos super potes des Kings of Leon
Confirmed what I remember that there are several good songs but his high pitch vocals on this album leave me cold. However that new single 'Mustang' is a belter
Overall it is just kinda fine alternative rock, with a bit of a southern flare. I'll give them credit for varying up their sound a bit from track to track. My biggest hangup is the lead singer's delivery... his refrain on Day Old Blues is a good example of the style that quickly becomes irritating to me. Still there are some strong tracks like Four Kicks and The Bucket
Ive heard of Kings of Leon before and a couple of their bigger hits otherwise I was unfamiliar with their music. This was a bit of a disappointment for a first impression. I’d still listen to their other stuff and give it a chance.
Varied between kick ass to great to watered down Faith No More to "Why isn't this band at least as big as the Foo Fighters" to thinking the vocalist was doing a bad Bon Scott imitation. Multiple gems here, but you have to kiss a lot of frogs.
Decent but easily forgetable album
It's good, but not my cup of tea. I prefer the newer KOL (Blasphemy, I know)
It was pretty good (better than I expected) 3.5 Definitely enjoyed it
I liked it! Not quite a 4 but not too far off. Some songs i liked quite a bit
Some great ones and some not so great
Pretty good, not as good as the first album because you can sort of smell the rot setting in that will eventually lead to Sex on Fire
6.5/10
Fine. Nothing special.
A solid album with an early aughts vibe, capturing that return to rock wave of the first part of the 21st century.
(Mai ascoltato prima) Devo ammettere di averli giudicati negativamente ancora prima di ascoltarli per il nome, che mi sembrava un po’ presuntuoso, ma alla fine non sono male. Qualche canzone carina e un po’ di filler.
Aha Shake Heartbreak is an early album of Kings of Leon. The album is less polished than later work. This album has a drive and some urgence, making it less boring than the recent albums of Lings of Leon.
I was dreading this one a bit as i used to really like this album growing up. Only by the Night was their turning point where i stopped listening to them. I was in the crowd at Reading where the lead singer lost the plot and told everyone to go f*** themselves. Thats was a very strange night. Anyway İ think the first two albums are probably the best, third was ok too. Aha Shake Heartbreak offers a more intimate look at Kings of Leon after their more rough and grizzled Youth and Young Manhood. They're song craft has improved and that can be seen in songs like Milk, The Bucket and Soft. İt's a nice listen. Moby has got nothing on these guys.
The music is great but wow the singer gets real old. “Day Old Blues” is him at his annoyingest.
Not a bad album. Some fun songs. Enjoyed listening but won’t seek it out.
Decent rock album
Kings of Leon on ollut hittejä laskematta aina vähän mielialamusiikkia allekirjoittaneelle.
Love the songs and the band’s groove. Biggest issue is the singer, his voice really grates on me
Great run in the middle from Milk and some great memories. Sounds a little dated.
Great album. I remember buying on release. Never left rotation. Fun guitar and drums wutg unique vocals before they got all poppy.. Felt fresh and new at the time. Solid 7
Some good songs, nice vocals and overall vibe. Wasn’t a fan of the music on some of the tracks. Strong 6
Sparkling
meh
Felt like the red hot chili peppers. I enjoy their more recent sound better.
Even though this loses a bit of the unpolished appeal of their debut, KoL delivers another garage rock revival record with that signature southern twinge. This is just one of those records that’s undeniably catchy. I’m not a major fan of the band’s later efforts, but I’ll admit they know how to write a hook. I always have a good time going back to the first few of theirs.
Meh. The band is good but the vocalist lacks range.
smooth-listening, 3 stars.
I remember when this came out and I felt like this rock speak-singing is The Hold Steady without the Springstein-like storytelling. It’s more of a party vibe, but they’d never play this at the parties I went to. I will say the production is better here than The Hold Steady where they really started to bury the speak-singing under a bunch of instruments.
I just know radio friendly stuff of this band so I was skeptical when this was recommended. After some rather dull openers I really liked it. It's not my favourite nor I find the album per se special - but it's a nice, uplifting mellow listening experience.
Not their best album, The Bucket being the only track I really liked.
Just a few days ago I mentioned here that I look forward to listening to more of Kings of Leon's catalog and -- voila! -- here we are. I enjoyed this album as I had with the other one. Good rock songs with their own style.
Well, I really like the way this started off, the first song really kicked. Then, 41 seconds in, the vocalist came in and ruined it. It's a shame, because musically, this album is really good, in a 2000's indie kind of way. I pulled up the lyrics around the 3rd song, and kinda sorry I did. Not exactly deep and meaningful. Actually, not remotely deep and meaningful. But I do like the music (as I've already noted). Bottom line? 3/5 swap out to a decent singer, and add even a semblance of interest in the lyrics and this is a solid 4 (at least). just could've been so much more... 3/5
I don’t hate this. Why don’t I hate this? Overall, this was actually okay. Nothing new or innovative. It’s fine. It’s pop rock. Won’t listen to this again, though.
Not as strong as I remember it being back when it came out. Still good though
Rock
iconic
I don't mind these guys but not my fav record by them.
Pleasant, can't remember a tune 3,5/5
I believe this is the second album from this list I've heard for this band. The first was more kind of straight southern rock and didn't make a huge impression. This is musically more interesting. I wasn't able to pick up much lyrically though and the vocals didn't do much for me.
Relaxed rock, leans slightly more towards garage/raw than overproduced, but pretty central
Nothing really moved me along all these songs. They were fine, and I can listen to them, but none of them moved me.
This is really young Kings of Leon, they sound really raw, and unfortunately kind of commercial. I liked a lot of the songs, but for the same reason I didn't really like the album. It felt like pandering to the masses.
I was never aware of Kings of Leon until that awful "Sex on Fire" song came out in 2008 and I've disliked them ever since. At times, this veered into something I didn't mind. Maybe with repeated listens, it would grow on me. Meh.
Aha shake heartbreak took me back to being 14 in high school listening to the high school band playing four kicks and watching the video for the bucket on an MTV equivalent/knock off. It might be the kings of leons best album, maybe but they never quite made it into my favourite bands list. I would say 3 out of 5
Never been too fussed by the Kings of Leon, after all their main hit single Sex on Fire is a song that I can’t stand. This album however, I was pleasantly surprised with a few songs that I quite enjoyed, despite not really understanding what the singer is saying, but there was some decent tempo tracks tap to. I’m probably not a KoL convert, but I didn’t mind this listen.
It's mostly upbeat and I enjoyed the freshness of the album, just the sound of a indie-rock band playing together really well and kudos for that. However nothing really sticks out as being particularly interesting, memorable or innovative apart from maybe the short "Slow Night, So Long" with it's laidback Latin groove. Not bad but not great either. 3.5
Fav: Day Old Blues
Aha Shake Heartbreak doesn't have the sanded-down quality of its predecessor; Its boring comes from the production, retrospectively turning the thing into an expected American rock record. Insert obligatory comments about the singer's voice here. Past that, though, given a couple instrumental breaks from said voice, the pace stays up and vocals become instrumental instead of focused. That gives the album its life back for the back half.
I like some of the music, and I kind of like the vocals. He at least has an interesting voice. Overall it’s an OK record.
It was fine. Some of the songs I liked, a bunch I didn't. Probably won't play again anytime soon.
"Aha Shake Heartbreak" is the second album by American rock band Kings of Leon. Alternative rock, Southern rock and garage rock revival are the genres listed. Hmmm...garage rock revival is a new one for me. The album was produced by Ethan Johns and recorded in LA. The band is Followill brothers Caleb (vocals, rhythm guitar), Nathan (drums) and Jared (bass) and cousin Matthew Followill (lead guitar). The album received generally favorable reviews and, commercially, hit #3 in the UK and #55 in the US. A lead guitar slash and a slow rhythm guitar open "Slow Night, So Long." The band kicks in and the song progressively gets faster. Caleb's vocals are buried as he regrets sleeping with a 17-year old. They slow up the pace on "King of the Rodeo." And, again they pick up the pace. Layered melodic guitars. "Good Time To Roll on." Their first single "The Bucket" has catchy guitars. The soft-loud-soft dynamic. A melodic guitar. Standard rock sounding but one of the best songs on the album. It's about 17-year old bassist Jared dealing with fame. "Four Kicks" is more hard rocking and bluesy. OK, here's your Southern rock, actually punky blues sounding. The vocals work here. He's singing about his Dad getting into fights. This album is OK; I have to admit I wasn't expecting much. It does rock at times, if repetitive. There's nice layered, melodic guitars. The band is tight. The lyrics are standard rock fare: being in a band, different types of girls and, of course, fathers getting into fights. The singer to me is just OK. There are some songs here worth hearing and if you like them, you'll probably like the album.
2.75
Ok, I don’t know why I thought Kings of Leon was a one-hit wonder band from the 2010s (I thought “Use Somebody” was more recent than it is.) The album was fine? I didn’t love the singer’s voice, and I also didn’t like how multiple songs started with instruments panned all the way to one side. But some of the songs were fun enough!
This band is okay. I feel like I should like it better though.
It’s ok
3.5 I was never the biggest fan of KoL. Their hits in ‘08 and after we’re all I knew. I thought Caleb Followill had a really good voice but there was always something I thought was missing in their music, though I could never name what I meant. I also knew their earlier fans didn’t like the new radio stuff but I was never intrigued enough to investigate. Well I can say I understand the early fans’ complaints. I thought this album was much better than their earlier work. It sounds more raw, more authentic and more genuine. I was pleasantly surprised. I put “Where Noboday knows”, “Slow Noght, So Long” and “The Bucket” on my likes songs lists
2.5 // Started off bad, ended on a high note Fav: Rememo
*sigh*. This may have lasted a bit better than other contemporaneous acts. But not much. It’s good, but not really a must listen.
I like Kings of Leon but I don't love Kings of Leon. I am surprised that Kings of Leon would be included in this list, but even more surprised that this album is. Their album Only By the Night is a much better album. Anyway, this album was just okay.
I enjoyed this, I remember when these guys hit the scene. I didn’t like them at first but music was in a weird place. The changing of the guard had happened. Out was grunge and in was this new rock. I really like these guys now.
Somewhat diverse rock album with some occasionally difficult to understand lyrics.
They sound like every band you've heard in a bar that thinks that they're going to make it big. Somehow, Kings of Leon pulled it off.
This was a solid if somewhat forgettable early 2000s rock album. I enjoyed listening to it, but I'll be darned if I can remember what I listened to a day later. Those vocals were rough though, I do remember that. Fave Songs: The Bucket, Rememo, Soft, Velvet Snow, Four Kicks, King of the Rodeo
Back when K.O.L. were still decent
I used to think this band was overrated, and that they were a straightforward rock band. Then I started to listen to more of them and some of their tracks that aren't just radio singles and I started to like them, and then I started to read a lot of people hating on them so my current stance is that they are overhated. I don't think they are really an amazing band and I don't frequently reach for an album of theirs to put on when I need something to fill silence, and I don't frequently reach for tracks of theirs to throw onto a playlist. I am surprised that this is the album of theirs that is on this list and it makes me wonder if there are more to come? Because this one isn't necessarily packed with strong songs. In fact, per Spotify, none of their top 10 tracks come from this record (and 4 of the 9 come from the album "Only By The Night"). I know I said that I tend to like their non-radio tracks more, but I find it perplexing that this album is here and potentially not "Only By The Night", which has so many of their radio hits on it... and really in my opinion this is a radio band, regardless of my opinion So there's probably more to come? Everyone knows them for songs like "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody". One thing that I've been trying to balance with these is that so many of these albums have some kind of context involved. I just spewed all of these biases I have towards the band, for better or worse. Do I just listen to this record on it's own, pretend like I've never heard of them, and then give a fair rating? I think that would be great! But I also don't think it's necessarily a bad idea to think of each album with some kind of context. Did an album change the direction of it's music genre? If so, it's absolutely getting a higher rating from me, even if my natural thinking is to not enjoy the songs for what they are. "Milk" felt kind of cringey to me. I've always felt like the singer of this band wants to have a raspy voice but tries just SO hard to get it. Sometimes this happens and it's really embarrassing (see videos of Puddle of Mudd covering Nirvana) and he really borders on this here. This isn't my favorite release by them, but I stand by my first thoughts that this band has more in the tank than just their radio hits.
как сказала мама "классический альбом 70х") добавлю что нифига слова не понятны, зачем так))
Hated the singing on the first listen, started to grow in me the second time around. 3 for now, may revisit at a later date
Better than expected. I've always kinda hated the band because of Sex on Fire.
Like every Kings of Leon song I’ve listened, it’s fine but something about them just doesn’t grab me. They sound empty, like they’re all surface with little substance
Toimiihan tämä, 3/5. Mutta en kyllä tajua mitä tekee listalla.
I like this. Less refined and catchy as the later album with Sex On Fire etc, but a good guitar sound reminiscent of The Strokes. Accomplished drumming and bass too. Singing is pretty rapid fire, but not unpleasant. High 3 stars.
a pretty good mid-00s indie rock album. despite it's relatively short length, there's not a lot of variation here. a lot of the songs sound the same and are sort of the same tempo and feel. it's not bad, but it doesn't make for a super compelling album. i had never listened to one of their albums before, so this was a new experience. i can't say that listening to this one is going to amount to me going out of my way for more, but it wasn't awful. it's in the realm of the music that i liked back then and still like, but it just doesn't fully click for me.
I listened to most of this whilst driving through Sheffield - a city I really don't know at all. As a result it's a bit of a blur if I'm honest. There were some nice moments, but I'll need to take the time to listen to this again perhaps to get a better impression
3/13, 23%
I'm not sure if his voice is genius or annoying, either way I'm pretty sure I didn't love this but didn't think it was terrible
These guys don't really move the needle for me in either direction, and nothing I heard here changed that. Best track: The Bucket
I like their energy and the sound of the band. No big hits here but a good solid album.
Heard of the band before, but didn’t know anything from the album. This was a nice surprise. Definitely a different band with a unique style and cadence. I thought it was a great listen. Favorite tracks: Soft, The Bucket, For Kicks, Slow Night So Long, King of the Rodeo, Taper Jean Girl, Milk. 3.5/5
A bit short Have other better albums
There's a few Kings of Leon songs that I like but none of them are on this album. It's not terrible though, I was just expecting more.
