Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Please stay as sober as possible while listening to this album, otherwise you might lose your mind. When the first track devolved into utter chaos, I wasn't sure I was still on planet earth. And as an American who's only language is English, it was even more unsettling not having any clue what the vocalist was shouting at me. But he sounded mad. I think this record is a fun, unexpected turn, even if it suffers from the 80s production a bit too much. The macabre, synthetic swells and circus music make this feel like a Tom Waits record in a few spots, and that's where I had the most fun. The industrial metal side of things turned me off for the most part.
You ever had a fever dream where all the sleep paralysis demons appear as French-speaking, metalhead amalgamations of Tom Waits and Trent Reznor?
What is this, French week? Two French albums a few days apart, very odd. This one's got a lot more for me than the previous. It started out sounding almost the same as the other, but there's some fantastic rock instrumentation and energy. The singer really put his life on the line on some of these tracks, I respect it. Favorite tracks: La fille de la mort, Rue des tempetes, L'eau rouge. Album art: Really hard to even tell what this is. But I like the neon sign-looking font a lot. Color-wise, this reminds me of the Cure's Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. I hope we get that on here at some point. 3/5
twas enjoyable enough. much of the album sounded like a french version of rammstein. however, rammstein did it better… and germaner.
Oh No! The Ringmaster at Le Carnivàle Horriblè Has Condemned My Soul To Hell for My Many Crimes!
What the heck did I just listen to...? some thoughts my fiancee and I sent back and forth on Discord while listening: "I'm in an evil french depression" "churning, dissonant strings and a french man yelling angrily... finally some good fucking music" "it's like french tom waits in an abandoned factory" "sort of a rammstein-in-paris vibe" all in all, it was super weird but I didn't completely hate it. individual songs would go from parts I loved to parts that sounded insane and back again, but I get it. it was the 80s, these things happen. favorites: (parts of) la fille de la mort and longue route?
Haha experimental music. Schizophrenia to my ears with its high anxiety mood and all-over-the-place sound. It's loud and atmospheric with its wall of sound, satisfying that symphonic metal genre. The random abrasive samples and dark percussions are one of the earliest examples show signs of various gothic music of the 80s, but also predate the style industrial music would take in the 90s with NiN and Ministry. A lot of this music I could hear being played in gothic clubs. But we also get some weird vaudeville music, related to that "dark cabaret" genre, in tracks like "La fille de la mort" and "Charlotte." Honestly, I thought they killed it in the first half (although I got a few complains) but the second half started sounding pretty generic. "Crier les chiens" and "Ville notre" sound almost identical and are pretty forgettable. "Les enfants" is fairly interesting but a bit over-the-top and repetitive in what it does, and unnecessarily goes on for far too long. "L'Amourir" is actually a really sick industrial metal track. "Pas Mal" is pretty decent and has some cool effects but didn't impress me too much.
French orchestral metal. Unique for sure

Experiência verdadeiramente singular. A orquestração atmosférica é industrial o suficiente por si só, mas quando combinada com um vocal rosnante em francês, a experiência se torna ainda mais intensa.
I wish I had better speakers for metal. The frenchness and the intro were nice, don't know that I'll be listening again.
This one was a bit of a shock at first. I was not mentally prepared for this album. I had a thought that shifted my perceptions, though. Part of the way through the second song, I thought, "This is like the soundtrack to some sort of twisted, post-industrial, dystopic carnival." And then I kinda loved it. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of wordless screeching and noise for the sake of noise. But if they were going for the gothy death circus vibe... well, they nailed it. Still not a jam I'm adding to the regular rotation but, for the right mood, it's a distinct vibe.
It’s Tom Waits singing Nine Inch Nails songs in French. Seriously though, Bowie liked this album and this group. That gets it a bonus star.
Meh
This was one of the weirdest albums so far.
You know, I listen to a lot of music, but this was something else. Young Gods aren't particularly extreme compared to some of their peers but geez, do they even have peers? I can't see myself coming back to this album, but it gets strong points for creativity. This was a wild whirlwind of symphonic noise, gritty cabaret sounds, and industrial thrash. I see others have made the Tom Waits connection, so I'll refrain. From what I've seen of the lyrics they're kind of poetic in a way I can only describe as, well, French. Moody and a little twisted, but not as dark as some of the song titles led me to think they would be. Fave Songs: L'eau rouge, Charlotte, Longue route, Rue des Tempêtes
Vage stem, goede muziek maar zang is kut
From Minute 4, La fille de la mort really hits nicely.
Kinda cool, weird, camp etc. If INXS are the my yardstick for the epitome of good 80s music then these guys get relatively close. Can hear some NIN and QOTSA too.
At first I was thinking wtf is this... but it grew on me
An interesting take on French 80s rock
Ei genre kyllä oikein aukea, mutta sen verran kiinnostava enkä osaa varsinaisia virheitä sanoa, että pitää varmaan se 3 antaa.
*Confused American noises*
Um tanto indigesto mas cumpre seu propósito
What in the world is this? The first track shook me with its sheer intensity. Absolute madness.
Crossover of carnival, industrial, rock and - at times - metal and a singer who himself is a wannabe crossover of a french Tom Waits and Till Lindemann, albeit trying too hard. The result is mixed. 2.5/5
Oye, esto suena como si hubiese sido grabado esta misma decada. AL principio me tenia rascandome la cabeza, la primera cancion sin duda es un desafio, pero despues fui entrando en su onda y me cautivo.
I didn't really have much use for this. I don't really care for this kind of singing (if that's the word for it). Maybe being able to understand the words would help, but I doubt it. Playing it near maximum volume on my headphones did nearly down out the music the weird denizen with a giant rolling suitcase on my bus ride home was blasting from what appeared to be a battery powered clock radio, so there is that.
Like going through a fever dream. Interesting choices musically, like nothing I’ve heard before.
Must admit I didn't spend much time with this album. (Hey that's life.) And I thought it was going to be easily dismissible. But no. The genre 'dark caberet" fill me with dread but it seems musically inventive. You have to get over some of the screaming French vocals but its worth a further explore.
I feel I would enjoy this less if I was used to French music but I really enjoyed the pronunciations over some really alright rock tracks
Hmmm, in some ways like a Swiss-French/Swiss-German but weaker version of Rammstein...if Rammstein and Tom Waits had a lovechild. I did not like the real avantgarde stuff that sounded like Waits' circus music (La Fille de la Mort, Charlotte, Les Enfants) but the heavier, almost thrash Rammstein-sounding (or NIN-sounding) stuff was kind of cool (Rue des Tempetes, L'eau Rouge, Longue Route, Crier les Chiens, Ville Notre, L'amourir, Pas Mal). Yeah, the vocals are pretty brutal, but the beats really are captivating. I thought for sure I'd give it a 2 after the first song but the album really grew on me.
The first track had me super excited, and then it went a little downhill from there. It’s definitely not awful. I think the vocals could be improved, but the overall bits of experimentation and creativeness are pretty awesome. Not really my genre, but I still got some enjoyment from it. 5/10
It surprised me, but not enough to listen again.
Heavy and dark
Kind of hard to take a French metal band seriously, but this kinda slaps.
Pas Mal, Pas Bien
Not the start I was expecting, but picked up a bit by track 2. Harder to get into the themes without speaking French, but digging the industrial sound...as the album dragged on, my attention waned. Was thinking 4 for a bit...but we're down to a 3.5.
I had absolutely no idea what to expect. What I got was an updated industrialised and foreign version of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. It appears that they are more interested in drama than in music itself. The vocals are generally declaimed rather than sung, and the arrangements / samples are clearly designed to produce dramatic effect. Listenable but not something I am likely to come back to.
French grunge I guess. Started out as carnival music but it was really interesting
Look, shouting in French over drum machines and samplers has never sounded so good.
Musically variant with gruff voiced French lyrics.
Pretty cool symphonic industrial, with a lil cabaret. Might not return super soon, but def neat 👍
I liked this more than I thought I would. Some really nice songs here.
Noise annoys.
Best Song: Longue route. Nice heavy groove that really epitomizes the industrial sound they are going for. Worst Song: Ville Notre. Without knowing the context of the song, it just sounds like it is taking itself too seriously. Overall: A nice surprise. I liked how experimental it got with songs like "Les enfants". At times the experimentation got in its own way and I found myself looking for a consistent rhythm or theme, but generally the vibe here was a good industrial grind.
Nevjerojatno koliko me u dijelovima podsjećaju na early Swanse.
Better after the first song, interesting pieces in the production
I had no idea this was an industrial band/album. It reminded me of Ministry, which I was fine with. Nice surprise here.
Am I listening to a rock opera? What is going on here?
On paper I could get into industrial, but this feels a bit too try-hard in terms of edginess. Some neat sounds though.
Ok I guess
Reminiscent of Vaudeville at times mixed in with metal. And metal vocals in French. Kinda dig it.
Heftig werk. Interessant om een keer op plaat te horen. Heb ze ooit een keer live gezien. Dat was wel indrukwekkend goed.
Going into this listen through, there's a lot of baggage. I'm aware that it's one of the lowest rated albums on the list, but I tend to like most of the low rated albums quite a bit (outside of general garbage like the trailer trash magnum opus Devil Without a Cause). The Birthday Party, John Zorn, Laibach, and Pere Ubu currently reside there with some legitimate great albums. I've seen Butthole Surfers down there as well. Napalm Death, the lowest rated, isn't a favorite of mine, but it's much better than some of the garbage people on here seem to like for no discernable reason like Guns 'n' Roses and Oasis. I'm familiar with The Young Gods. Not intimately, but they are in a similar orbit to a lot of music I like. I've heard their music a bit, I've heard some remixes Franz Treichler has done, I have heard a number of Roli Mosimann projects. I don't believe I've heard this album specifically, but I've gone around the bend a few times, trying to get into this group. I like industrial music, including industrial metal. I like arty, pretentious stuff. The Young Gods have always felt like an industrial metal band with arty leanings. Despite my attempts though, they always felt maddeningly out of my grasp. They couldn't hook me. I do respect them though. Quite a bit. And while I don't jive with them, I can say the music doesn't belong on the bottom of this list by any stretch of the imagination. It sounds pretty good, it's got some good grooves. It's better than a lot of the shit industrial that came out in the wake of Skinny Puppy and Ministry. The pantheon for great industrial for me has always been Foetus, Einsturzende Neubauten, Coil, and Nurse With Wound. Only one of those artists is on the list along with the requisite genre founders Throbbing Gristle. The writers would do well to better represent a pretty important genre that has had its influence come back with explosive momentum in the 2010s. While they aren't my favorite band in the genre, at least The Young Gods provide a little bit of representation of this sound. I won't be returning to this album anytime soon, but I'll give it a high three. I'm tempted to give it a four for its role of token inclusion, but my rankings run straight. No grading on a curve, no bonus points.
Bom.
I generally liked this one. This one was really strange, and I'm into Van Der Graaf Generator. The first three tracks, notably, 'de la mort' were probably the best ones. Really intense and ominous. Reminds me of Van Der Graaf, but at the same time it's nothing like I've heard before. Definitely an album which I'm gonna have to get back to, to really understand. 'les enfants' I found the weakest track on the record. A bit too repetitive. The vocalist here sounds pretty much like he's just smoked all the cigarettes in Paris, but that kind of fits the music. Instrumentation is generally good, but the real draw is the songwriting. Overall I'll go for 3.5 stars here. This was a good, and really interesting, record, but I felt that there was a drop in quality towards the end of the album.
French heavy metal
Industrial cabaret....in French. How novel. It was interesting at least. Not sure of it'll catch on though. You kids and your music.
2.5/5 Interesting.. never heard of this band before, so I didn’t know what to expect. I liked some of the songs but they got a bit weird which was not necessary for me. Liked the vocals though. Favourite songs: - L’eau rouge - Charlotte - La fille de la mort
I have no idea whats going on.
What if Ministry and Tom Waits teamed up to do a mix of late 80's Nine Inch Nails, Rammstein, and György Ligeti covers? Now, what if it was all in French?
As a fan of Nine Inch Nails, this kept my interest well enough. Longue Route is a pretty good one. I can hear the echoes of this influence in NIN, Mike Patton’s various groups, Trans Am, Rammstein, Meat Beat Manifesto. Inventive use of samples, and pads, I think.
The guy in this record gargles with motor oil, and it's pissed about it. Something new to add to my Halloween playlist.
Rock industrial.
"L' Eau Rouge" or in English... "The Red Water"? Information is limited and I don't know French, but this might have something to do with menstruation, love affair, and probably sex. And what is that lame cover? Is that an amber? I'm a big fan of Rammstein. And Young Gods sounds a lot like the mentioned industrial German band. But for some reason I didn't enjoy the album much. Unlike Rammstein which has a heavy and more slick sound, this album is loose and even inconsistent. The beats and the noises didn't engaged me that much. Still, the tracks that incorporates classical elements are stellar. "La fille de la mort", "Rue des tempetes", "Charlotte", and "Les enfants". I liked those even more than Rammstein's popular violin driven "Mein Herz Brennt". While I'm not whining that my favorite industrial band isn't mentioned in the list, I still wonder why this is in the list. My guess is that this is the beginning or the biggest influence to the industrial music in the '90s. Released in 1989, this might be the turning point from new wave to industrial rock. It has a few great tracks, but not a solid must listen album overall. It's hard to say if I hated it or loved it, but it surely is interesting.
Language barrier aside, interesting listen. Had to look up the band to find out there a sampler player.

Random samples and vomiting on the mic is not an album of music, but an album of sounds. I don’t see what is enjoyable here, even if it is historical for industrial rock that comes later.
Very unorthodox, would have liked a bit more singing than speaking but overall not bad
I HATED this....then I loved it. Then I hated it again. Wild trip but I won’t say it wasn’t an enjoyable one. Kind of like French Rammstein in parts. Fav tracks : “Rue des tempetes” “Longue route”
Buen disco. Interesante
Rock en ocasiones un tanto experimental en cuanto a la instrumentación. Canciones sin mucho peso y un tanto guitarreras. Me lo podía esperar así. Bastante parecidos los cortes entre sí
Loud! A bit like Tom Waits. Inventive, interesting, but probably wouldn’t stick it on for fun.
// Favs: La fille de la mort Score: Decent to Strong 3
Wild album, just in French...
9/23 Really liked the first song then from there it got much more industrial and experimental, didn't love it but it was interesting throughout. Standout Tracks: La fille de la mort, Charlotte, Crier les chiens
Yes, you're very moody.
Scary music! Was a fan though.
I can't understand a word that is said, but it sounds pretty good. Kind of sounds like if Rammstein wrote music for a stage show.
Not my genre and I don’t speak the language, but I can respect the fact that the album sounded connected and they did it well.
this is an odd one, but I like it. Going from weird accordion sounds to industrial every other track...
Very different from most of the music I've heard in my life, which is why I love this '1001 Albums' project so darn much. This is a wild album with wild energy and some really interesting stuff going on. Not sure if these musicians love horror movies, but it definitely won't surprise me if they do. All sorts of clashing noise, dissonance, frenetic rhythms and changes, hard-driving' industrial sound. Not at all what I normally listen to musically, and I honestly went in expecting to hate it (I know, I know: I do try to push away expectations but I don't always succeed) but it actually kind of drew me in at times (yet another excellent feature of this project).
French industrial. Singer sounds like Rammstein.
Liked this more than I was expecting to. The sampling approach is interesting, reminds me a bit of how Thr Prodigyvusea guitar samples. The vocals were slightly hard work because they were in French and quite prominent in the mix. Overall I liked it and it seems to have influenced some cool people! 7/10
Definitely out there but some of it was actually pretty cool. Saved track: “Rue des tempetes”
assez cool
I'm really enjoying the foreign language records chosen for this book. They're all pretty stellar (imagine that) and I probably would never have listened to them otherwise.
At first I wasn’t sure about this album, but I was pleasantly surprised with it.
Was wondering what this would be - I assumed some kind of Euro alt rock before listening. Wiki says it's industrial but it doesn't sound like the other stuff I've heard... ok by the second song it's more like KMFDM/Ministry/Skinny Puppy etc. Still different to those bands though, like it's more performance art than music. I'd describe the tracks less as songs and more as "pieces", if that makes sense (or Stücke, if I was going to be a wanker about it). Would probably listen again though, probably will. 3/5.
Fr*nce
NO es mi estilo, ni me atrae, pero siempre han sido bastante reconocidos por su calidad. Con una vez ya me parece suficiente.
I didn't know there was such a thing as French hard rock. I liked the French elements, the string and accordion, but I'm not a fan of hard rock in general.
Kinda fun but nothing really memorable.
Some interesting moments here and there. I can appreciate music in a foreign language but for whatever reason the French gravel wasn't doing it for me. My favorite was probably Longue route or L'Amourir. I have zero interest to come back to this but it was interesting hearing it with the context of it being from 1989 and maybe being a little ahead of it's time.
fav songs: longue route industrial, aggressive, dark 50/100
Had some cool riffs and mixing at parts... but yeah...
That was tough. Other reviewers have compared the album to Pink Floyd, NIN, and Reznor—all bands and artists I really enjoy listening to. I was curious. The very first track put me off so much that I couldn’t bring myself to listen to it all the way through. The second one reminded me of old NIN songs, but it didn’t win me over. It’s really hot today—maybe that’s why I’m not in the mood for anything radically new. I might give the album another listen after all. But that’s enough for now. 2/5
Yeah okay i can see how someone could like this but absolutely not for me
I’m sure this important in the history of music somehow but it’s not enjoyable
Weird to get two industrial experimental metal albums from non English speaking European bands in one week, but it makes the comparison easier. I liked Laibach better, this was not far enough off the deep end to make it interesting and not safe enough to make it enjoyable. Its in the middle between normal and weird not a good place to end up
Went in blind on this one. No idea what to expect. And then the French circus music kicks in. Uh-oh. If first impressions are important, things are not going well for this one. Then a serious left turn into grating treble heavy noise with angry French lyrics/screaming. Hmmm. Not really better, but certainly surprising. And then something closer to good music. All in the first track. Exhausting nearly 8 min track. And then a quickie punk/sort of industrial /heavy metal track less than 3 mins. Head spinning. This one was a level up from the experimental track 1. Foreboding French lyrics that I have no idea what the meaning is. Track 3. Best so far. Solid industrial rage. Track 4. Shit circus music again. Accordion is not my fave. Almost sounds like he is trying to be Tom Waits, but not nearly as good. In fact, this track is ass. Track 5. Speed metal and French anger screaming. No thanks. Track 6. I don’ve the pretentious sound of the French language. The music in the background here is above average metal. But I hate the French screaming. Track 7. If it isn’t more of the same, I’ll be damned. This one isn’t terrible. Or good. Track 8. Hope I never have to listen to this ever again. More industrial. Hear the Kraftwerk influence in this one. DO NOT LIKE. Why am I spending so much time analyzing this one when I clearly don’t really like it? Because I’m on a plane on summer vacation. Ha! Track 9. Ok, little groove to start. Not the worst track. This one is tolerable and a little bit interesting. Reminds me a little of a band I once heard but can’t think of the name. Not the Cult, but? Hmm. Last track. Thank God. Nothing more to say at this point. I will give them this… it’s avante garde and not really like anything else I’ve heard. If this is your jam, I think there’s quality in there. It’s just absolutely not for me. I hope to not listen to this again.
So maybe I'm not admittedly as open-minded as I thought. This is a bit out there for me, and I've learned it's not my vibe. Yes, there's elements of a French Pink Floyd, NIN, and what I thought sounded like Megadeth (Pas Mal). I appreciate the opportunity to listen to something outside of my comfort zone. This is for some people. Sadly, I'm not one of them.
Sounds like absinthe tastes
They are summoning demons
Not for me
2.5
deeply naff.
My rating 2.0.
Wanna be French Rammstein but honestly an insult to those German rockers to even compare. Regardless, this was not good. Could easily round down. 1.5
This album gave me anxiety. Sounded like a combo of French Rammstein and the score of a suspense thriller. Props for being one of the more interesting bad albums on the list. 2.25/5
3 - BAD
wat.
This is... Interesting. I've never really gotten into industrial music too much. Doesn't do a whole lot for me. It's mostly just kinda there but then some of it sounds like music from Killer Klowns from Outer Space or some shit. This album artwork looks like Piss and Blood, the Andres Serrano piece that Metallica used for Reload. My half-assed research attempt couldn't find whether Serrano made another Piss and Blood artwork, when the first one came out, or any details about this album's art. Funny to speculate on but not worth doing any more research.
There are some ideas here that I find a bit interesting, but industrial metal is not my thing at all and I would never come back to this album.
I’m sure this is influential or something but it was not much fun to listen to. Longue Route was CNN kinda cool.
Heavy rock, I'd say bordering on metal, with some orchestral additions. Very broody
A long long long 40 something minutes. What is this? The worst parts of NIN with the dark side of Willy wonka. That may sound awesome, but it’s not.
It felt too dark for me
I have no fucking idea what this is. Even after listening to the whole thing. I now understand the general consensus on French Tom Waits / Trent Reznor / Rammstein at least, but… so much of it is just fucking mad. There are flashes of good bits in here… like a particularly fat riff, soundscape or driving rhythm, but it’s mostly just very noisy and weird. But you know, I didn’t sign up to this thing to be played safe easy picks every day. It’s good to get the weird shit every once in a while to spice things up.
Clous de vingt trois cm. Trent Reznor had to move into the Manson house and enter a drug fuelled depression to reach the emotional state required to produce the Downward Spiral, while all Young Gods had to do was be European.
It was weird as fuck, but not without some merit. The vocals were extremely guttural and in a foreign (to me) language, but they complemented the music perfectly. The music was very hit or miss, and by the end of the album it felt very repetitive. I'm glad I heard it, it was a band I had no knowledge of and it expanded my horizons. That being said, I'll never knowingly listen to it again.
Sounds like a French Rammstein. Could be good my French is sadly lacking. Overall type of fast metal not my type though.
Sounds a bit too Laibach-copypaste. Interesting ideas though.
36/100. There’s a strange and almost whimsical weirdness to the album, but unfortunately it just never clicks for me. The vocals especially did not work for me. They have a deep and theatrical style that almost reminds me of Rammstein, but without the same power or intensity behind them. A lot of the delivery feels closer to spoken grunting than actual singing, which made the album difficult to connect with.
I mean, the sampling is cool sometimes I guess but other times it's really stupid sounding ('Longue route') and also the guy needs to stop singing.
It's basically French Leonard Cohen. Hard pass.
Liked the more clowny stuff but the rest was so generic
Not terrible on the ears, but far from pleasant.
Another album that just wasn't my style. At times I hated it, at times I was intrigued. A few times it pulled out of the heavy industrial sound to give me something I enjoyed immensely.
Loved the first song.
I didn't like it, except the instrumental I guess...
This was not for me. I enjoyed some of the more orchestratral pieces, but the lead singer's voice didn't do much for me.
So. Weird.
This is my least favourite genre of music, but I don't know, it was kinda fun in French.
2,5
i have to respect an album that's trying to be out there even if it sucks. there has GOT to be better options from the industrial genre than this though
Day851 - this album was all over the place. you don’t have to speak french to know the accordion doesn’t belong in any song unless you’re weird al
Sounds like a French rock opera version of Beauty and the Beast. 2.4/5
Another shocking choice for the list
No sir, I don't like it.
Just because this record is considered "their" masterpiece, does not mean it is by any means an actual masterpiece...
This is definitely music, but I definitely don’t like it.
There were a few good moments, but mostly this was either boring or incredibly amateurish.
There were moments here I did find interesting and enjoyable, but the rougher ones just pull it down and make it a challenge to return to. The vocals are the element holding everything else back the most. The first track is downright bizarre and not in a fun way. 1 listen Favorite Track: Les enfants
Expectation: -> Never heard of this band. After listening: -> This may not be popular but I do enjoy this some. Not something I'll return to but if this were an english speaking band I would consider. Some incessant abrasive screaming nudged this down to a two. Could this get some play time at Halloween? Track ranking: (skipped)
Джигурда 40 минут рычит на французском. Странно, не нравится.
2.5 Actually enjoyed this whenever there was no vocals, but his voice was so grating
this is the most unlistenable piece of hype moments and aura ever. this is so awesome though, def one of the coolest rock albums i've ever listened to. i wish i could listen to an album full of the vibe of the first track though. God damn i'd never listen to this again though.
What an interesting album, French Industrial rock. Depending on how you listen to it, it either sounds like complete garbage noise or something quite cool. But ultimately, the complete garbage noise won out most of the time. Good addition to the list, never will listen to again.
The music itself was great but the vocals were so grating
At it's peak it was just okay. I think I wanted to enjoy this more than I actually did. Definitely an interesting album.
I like weird, I like screaming, I like circus altough I don't like this :(
Segundo Francia
hm
the only thing worse than Prog Rock is French Prog Rock
This record is mostly forgettable except for those raspy-ass vocals. I think they gave me second-hand throat cancer. Favourite Track(s): Longue route, Charlotte Least Favourite Track(s): La fille de la mort
cant stand the vocals
not what i felt like at all. L'Amourir was ok. The rest was mostly unmemorable. would not even remotely consider listening to this again. 2 stars
It must be hard to sing heavy songs in French, but here we are. NFI what they are singing about as I know little French. I didn’t mind the orchestral bits. One word to summarise: oubliette.
like if you asked tom waits to be french and make industrial music. ts so butt and that coming from someone who likes tom waits
I gave this one my best shot, but I failed to connect with it. Sonically, it's all over the place and doesn't sound like anything else I've ever heard. There are some cool songs here, like "Ville Notre," but I just don't know when I'd want to revisit this in the future.
2.5
Just not for me. Didn't listen all the way through.
I wanted to like this but it’s too screamo for me. Didn’t finish the album.
I’m always surprised by how much weird cabaret music is on this list. This album is a hybrid of industrial, metal, and French cabaret. The lead singer has an insane, menacing growl. I’d be curious to know what he’s singing about since it’s in French. Overall, I respect this, but I didn’t particularly enjoy it.
These are some atrocious vocals
Tom Waits in Geneva?…
Does they mean it? And more importantly - what is it exactly? My rudimentary understanding of French is both a benefit and an impediment. Drum sounds aside - there's enough unique sonics here - the waits/Serge vocals and often excellent strings - to keep it interesting. Ultimately though - at this same time - Foetus is doing much more compelling and affecting work in a similar palate - and with much better drum sounds.
French screamo industrial metal cabaret music. It is an interesting listen, the music is pretty damn cool, but the singing just doesn't hit for me. Cool to hear different than what I would normally listen too, but not gonna get much replay. Also, hate the band name and the album artwork.
This felt like a parody of itself. Which sometimes works for me! But this time did not. I liked the last two tracks well enough.
This dude somehow managed to get 4 Nick Cave albums on here so its no surprise he found the French Cover band of the NC&The Bad Seeds.
Nelabai patiko, balsas įkyrus
Overall Rating - 2.15/5 (4.30/10). Just not really a fan of industrial, and making it in French doesn't really improve it.
Yeah... no. Absolutely not. This ain't it. This just doesn't work for me in all ways. On top of having problems connected with vocals in a different language, the vocals in this are TERRIBLE. The music sounds like the first idea that popped in their head without actually working on it. I was going to give this 1 star, but it's clear these guys pioneered a new sound that very obviously lead to NiN and other artists taking it over and actually making good ideas with it. So I'll add a star for that. But does the first guy who figured out adding garlic to food remembered as a great chef if the food he made still sucked?
No
Not my vibe at all. The only thing I enjoyed was the occasional guitar part. The mixing, singing, and style of the music really put me off the album as a whole. I listened through it but it never got any better.
Frank rock, inte min grej.
That was interesting, not quite my taste but interesting
I can take just about anything for 40 minutes… except this.
Mammy, daddy this one was hard work. The opening tune was like a fairground tune. Some of the tunes had driving bass and there were some episodes of heavy metal drum work but I found this album to be one that I feel I have survived rather than enjoyed.
I'll be honest, and this is a bit unfair of me, but I wasn't expecting much from a group named 'The Young Gods'. Kind of a pompous name. This was somehow even stranger than I could've expected, though. Not everyone is going to have the mindset for industrial rock, dark cabaret, or whatever the hell you want to classify this as. Not to mention the gruff French voice that is uncomfortably belting out to you all the while. It's intentionally creepy and unsettling, so I guess I get the vibe. There are some melodic elements amidst the chaos, but it's never consistent enough to digest properly. I also can't unhear Tom Waits after so many reviewers mentioned him...
Like Rammstein, but without chorus. A few songs are ok.
Woof, not sure I needed to know that French industrial was a genre. One of those records I struggle to imagine anyone really enjoying. Wasn’t completely unlistenable though so light 2.
Maybe if I understood what they were saying I would’ve liked this better. Some (but not all) of the music was actually pretty good rock. Almost a 3
European circus music from hell. This actually had a couple of good moments but they were few and far between.
Volvemos al ruedo después de un largo tiempo con esta banda que no ubico para nada pero el que sea industrial me alegra. No me terminó de enganchar, más allá de que el género me gusta. Sin más para agregar, nos vemos la próxima semana.
Not bad late 80's industrial but I've heard much better.
Не слушабельно Аутентично, необычный вокал Франция, но больше ничего
"Hey Google, How do you say 'tedious' in French?" cirque du soleil, but make it a nightmare theme
Fransk!! Noe kult, men også litt for tøft for meg, men spennende
Not my thing. French helps
Oh that's a spicy one. I'm glad it's on the list, in the sea of generic britpop, but it's a little too hot for my taste buds.
2.5
I do think some of the industrial textures here are interesting, though a bit tiring, but I find his singing (which also gives me French chanson vibes) really bad. 2 stars
interesting but not good
A bit long for the french heavy rock. But had a pretty unique sound just not that pleasurable
I hate the French lol
Can’t take this one seriously, because: 1. Vocals sounds ridiculous 2. French 🤮 1.5/5
not for me.
Dark Industrial is a genre I don't quite grasp, despite efforts. But, this album was listenable.
Ok so Rammstein vibes - initially interesting before devolving into Willy Wonka mess. 2/5
When I'm in a niche music competition and my opponent is French industrial dark cabaret avant garde symphonic metal. Weten jullie nog dat ik het had over muziek die je laat voelen? Well, this album gives me the creeps.
2, interesting but not my cup of thé
..
Interesting genre. Not a fave, but didn't dislike it.
lowkey had to stop listening cause i just wasn’t vibing LOL, but do appreciate its innovation soundwise
The soundtrack to Expedition 33 if Ubisoft produced it.
what the hell, sure
This was a lot for a Tuesday morning
No standouts
It's no Angine de Poitrines, I'll give them that.
The French were really going through it.
Interesting
Weird
This was a fun novelty listen at first, but a full album of this? No thanks. Luckily this album is pretty short, so at the very least it doesn't overstay its welcome. Any more of that grating voice would have been too much. The cabaret elements are mostly what make this actually listenable, it's such a weird contrast from the vocals and the general style, but there's something fun about it. Overall definitely not deserving of being in the top 20 lowest albums in my opinion, but I won't be coming back to this likely ever.
Well, that was interesting. Swiss Industrial Metal. reminded me of Rammstein (German Industrial Metal) and early Nine Inch Nails, but not as good.
Thoughts before listening: I have 0 frame of reference for this band and album. If its from 1989 I have to think its probably British and either Britpop or dance of some sort. I'm going in completely cold on this one. Review: So I was way off on my guess. Allmusic calls them "Swiss electro-noise terrorists", and this album is pretty out there. Apparently their claim to fame is incorporating samples into industrial noise rock...all things I typically wouldn't gravitate to. Carnival music with a Tom Waits reminiscent vocalist singing entirely in French that morphs into Nine Inch Nails-style industrial....I will give these guys credit for being interesting, but otherwise its just not for me. 2-stars
Some things transcend borders of nations, languages and cultures. They are true no matter where you are in the world. The happiness of a child’s laughter. The excitement found in seeing someone engage in feats of physical or mental excellence. The love of family and friends. And how industrial music is unlistenable garbage. Also, hot tip for all aspiring lead singers. If you sing in a scary monster voice, I’m not going to think you’re a scary monster. I know there’s not monsters on the world. I’m just going to think you suck.
Not for me
5/10 Wanted to like this, and to be honest I might have, but the vocals kinda ruined it for me. Still glad to have heard it. Highlights: Pas mal Rue des tempêtes
To be honest, the entire album vibe sounds like a circus gone wrong. I'm not fluent in French at all, so I have no clue what the lyrics are. Surely I can look it up... Anyway, from what I researched, this album is the band's only one sung in French. Which is intriguing because the band is based in Switzerland. I don't know, maybe ethnically the band has French ancestry somewhere in there. :p I digress, I would give the album a solid 5/10... Unfortunately, for some songs, I was kind of bored and never had that moment of being stunned, where I thought, "Oh my god, this song sounds really good, I have to add it to my liked songs." The one thing that saves the album from getting a 2 is the singer's husky-toned voice.
Weird but kind of interesting
Not great, not irredeemable.
Good lord the spotify biography this group wrote for themselves is some next level pretentious self fallatio bullshit. Its french industrial rock on synthesizers
that was unexpected
It’s so weird, but so interesting to listen to! I really don’t know if I like it, but I did like listening to it. I probably won’t hurry back, though. Best Track: Longue route
Late start today Merry Christmas Eve T1 that French? Alr. Definitely alternate, very excited. 1:18 is that Neil diamond? 3:20 what’s going on here. Very avant garde I enjoyed that experience. T2 didn’t enjoy as much. Definitely still feels like it’s part of a bigger experience though. Didn’t take any notes but had a lot of thoughts, wanted to experience the album first then see what I remember or do a second listen later for notes: I have yet to listen to the final 4 songs (all already in the album but these are different versions / variations). Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Maybe a 2.2/10 or even a little higher. Going to relisten to some songs before giving final rating tomorrow morning.
Some experiments land with me and some don't. This one is the latter. I don't like the vocals, the industrial style, and the auditory roughness. I tried to imagine hearing this live in some seedy Berlin club with all the right atmosphere, but in my mind's eye I was still waiting for the show to end. I respect experiments, but this feels unrefined and uncurated: a directly exposed experiment. I'm sure the creative process was fun, and I can respect this kind of work as a private or ephemeral moment. But in an album I expect that the artist doesn't subject me to the raw material, but rather takes the time to refine it. This misaligned expectation is probably why a lot of reviewers, like me, are having a hard time with this album.
i would love to like this, but in fact, i just don't.
Surprisingly good for a french language industrial rock record.
At first I thought it was someone making fun of the French accent because it seemed so over the top to be true, but it wasn't. Also the first song maybe two, not bad but then it was this death metal with a sleazy french men breathing down my neck. Felt a little more like a horror movie and what a French serial killer would play for this victims. I will give it a 2 only because it was musical at least and didn't hurt my ears, it just gave me straight up creep vibes.
Sounds like a better version of Tom Waits.
I don't need to hear this ever again. Or even really for a first time.
Den här cirkusen har spårat ur.
Interesting
meh it wasn't great
tried a couple tracks Concluded that it was indeed french
How is this album on the list? Only the accompaniments save "L'Eau Rouge" from being irredeemably terrible. The singer's voice sounds so off-putting. Why didn't the Young Gods make this album without vocals? You're better off listening to Godflesh. 2 stars for "L'Eau Rouge".
Some French dude screaming? Nah, not my tempo. At times, the music wasn't unlistenable, though.
p614. 1989. 2 stars. Evidence, if it were needed, that the French can't rock. It sounds like hybrid between Meatloaf and Phantom of the Opera. In French. Nope.
The opening track is an anxiety attack in a bottle. Afterwards we have the second track which is my favorite of the album and one I actually really like. After that we have a bunch of songs, some I somewhat like, some I somewhat dislike. This one is hard to rate, I would give it a 2.5 but I can't unfortunately. I would probably never think to play this album in it's entirety again and if it is being played I would probably switch it to something else after the first half of the album is done playing, so I'm giving it a 2.
2 artsy
Some good rock, but the French sounds odd
2.5 - it was alright
no ❤️
I did not like this at all it was so goofy and also unpleasant. Kind of sounded like Tom Waits if he was French, and I’m not sure that kind of voice needs any additional elements working against it (like being French).
You decide to let this be the soundtrack to the final Sinner vs Alcaraz match of the year. How European.
I really hope this is to someone’s taste
Not my thing
Interesting, but never again
Lame
There are parts of this that are super interesting, but the dude's voice isn't one of them. Makes me think of a random drunk dude getting all in my space being gross... gave me the ick. The rest is like a horror movie soundtrack, which isn't necessarily bad, but not really good for active listening. 1.8, rounded to 2.
The opener was a weird experience, it had me apprehensive for what was to come. The next two sounded like they would fit as the soundtrack to a Doom level. And then it opens with a clown act again on Charlotte. And then back to the abbrasive industrial speed metal. What an experience.
This is the music record store workers play when you forgot your headphones… Grimy grooves otherwise a painful listen.
This was not good. Album 700 tho
Angry french music. Someone in the reviews compared it to a baby of french pink floyd and nine inch nails. I think it is more like a baby of Jacques Brel and Rammstein. Not my cup of tea.
Terrifying day at a French carnival run by a "petite diable", and Doom guy is there Like the river boat scene in Charlie and the chocolate factory, but Wonka is an angry French man
Krach. French Industrial.
French language suite's really well to this kind of stuff. Interesting album. Probably wont listen to it again, but quite enjoyed it for few spins.
Definitely interesting and could be cool in the right setting but I didn’t love listening to it
kind of hilarious ? what the hell is going on here
More into the symphony part than the metal part though I can appreciate a good blending of both.
The first and last songs are okay. Meh
an plodding post-punk style experimental rock with a lot of French metal growling. sampling bounces between repetitive Metallica-style backtracks to queasy carnival horror music. 2.5/5
Not good
french
Am I prejudiced against singing in French? Yes. Do I dislike industrial? Yes. This is a hard pass.
Nicht meine Musik.
6/10 not really my type but the music is good (not vocals)
The music wasn’t bad, I would have enjoyed it more if it were in english
Ministry did it better
Bad album
Didn't not particularly enjoy this grungy french escapade
Screamo/goth French? Interesting… not my cup of tea. Really liked the song Charolette, but it was a strange one off like they were trying to appease their management or something? Check a box I guess. It was okay. Not the worst, but not really good either.
It was odd. The first track was l'orrible, an accordion???? I could just picture a metal band in stripey t.shirts and berets. Didnt do it for me. It picked up from there, vocal was pretty good, even if it was in french. However the whole album lacked a decent drum. Finally heard a drum towards the end, pity they didnt have drumsticks. It wasnt that bad but I disagree that its a masterpiece. They have better tracks.
Hmm... It reminds me of when you get to the dingy rock club a bit too early. You don't know what's playing, the floor is still clean-sticky instead of spilled-drinks-and-vomit-sticky and the atmosphere is still a little uncomfortable. You get a drink and look around to see a pair of weird goths already on the dance floor, and nobody else, so you stand around for a bit, occasionally bopping your head. It's not bad, you've got something heavy and you're a few drinks into the night, but really, you're just waiting for the club to fill so they play the songs you know and love. It's certainly not the worst thing I've heard, it sort of works. Indeed, these are my favourite 80s French Industrial band. I'm not in any rush to hear it again.
Turns out that losing wars isn't the only thing the French are good at... They're also pretty decent at making bad music. The Young Gods sound like they're tryharding to be like Rammstein, yet they miss the plot. But at least it's creative and I bet there are people out there who'd absolutely love this. Gonna give it 2/5 cuz while it isn't good music, there's some okay bits in it... And it's still way better than the last 3 albums we had to listen to.
First couple of tracks the vocals kind of made me think of “the wall” but in French. I don’t know but a few words in French, so this may be a lyrical masterpiece I’m just too dumb to understand. The music didn’t do it for me on its own though.
Like going to a Cirque du Soleil show, but wearing a blindfold the whole time. Somebody's going to have to explain to me why this was so important to listen to. Almost gave this a 3, but realized when trying to pick a favorite track that I didn't like any of them.
Didn’t pay much attention. Not for me.
We love a gritty, baritone singer, but man do we not like industrial music. However, of the few industrial albums on the list I've heard so far, this is the best by far.
The instrumental wasn't terrible, but the gruff vocals were rough.
The French Tom Waits? I have to assume the songwriting is considered excellent but I can’t understand a word so I’ll have to continue to assume.
2.4 comme ci, comme ça,
Listening to this album felt like being kidnapped. It was scary and unenjoyable when it first happened. However, I got Stockholm Syndrome halfway through and began to sympathize with - maybe even start liking - my captors. But by the time I escaped, I remembered that this wasn’t the right life for me. I wish them all the best.
Another band of men I don’t know. Not a fan.
Odd, but not bad. French pop/punk rock. Didn't finish it.
I tried. Nothing grabbed me to save any of these songs.
It’s art, but I wouldn’t say I enjoyed it.
Reminded me of the soundtrack of a french psychological thriller I once watched.
Not for me
Si lo hubiera escuchado a los 15 me habría gustado un poco más que ahora.
The singer drones on and on. He sounds like a car that won't start.
I appreciate the swing here and chaotic nature of the album, I just found little to enjoy here.
** 1/2 Can‘t connect to that kind of music
• 2/5 • Do I like it? No; Do I appreciate that they are at the vanguard of sampling and industrial when it came out? Not deeply; Do I dislike it as much as Korn? Not at all (maybe Korn should sing in French) • Sounds a bit like Manhattan Steamroller went goth and scored the basement rave scene in Blade
Not my bag. I guess I like my gods a little older....
