Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Did someone just scream "d'accord" at me for a few minutes? I'm sorry, I don't think you can mix the French language and metal. I feel like I'm in a Monty Python language lab skit.
French circus metal. The Tidal link actually took me to a different album (by the band Eau Rouge) which sounded like MGMT dance music, so I was confused for a couple of tracks until I figured out what happened. The actual album was much closer to what I expected based on the Wikipedia and reviews. I liked the opening track, but wasn't especially into the album as a whole by the end. I think I would have liked it better if the vocals were less grating.
idk what i expected but i didnt expect french. i cant really say what it reminds me of because ive never heard french rock before, but its interesting, mayhaps a little too angry for my tastes. the first song was also very long but had a cool riff at some point in it. the title track song is v angry sounding and experimental. no idea what the dude is saying but he's going thru it a bit. charlotte kinda slaps, i like how it has a french-esque background track.
Out of all the years, they did 1989 the most dirty. Some of the these picks feel so random. Where's "Floating Into the Night" or "Beneath the Remains" or "Streetcleaner" or "Hats" or "Pretty Hate Machine" or "Energy" by Operation Ivy or "Wrong" by NoMeansNo? All these amazing albums and instead we get stuff from John Zorn, fIREHOSE, the Young Gods and fucking Aerosmith. Nothing against this album specifically just something I've noticed. Favorite track: Charlotte
French
Didn't really grab me
I struggled to find anything appealing or interesting about this work. There are not many records on this list with non-English lyrics, aggressive electronic sounds, and circus tunes. While I was glad to see something a little bit challenging appear this morning, it does not hit me like Butthole Surfers or Throbbing Gristle.
Man, I got hyped when folks said Pink Floyd/Nine Inch Nails. I get why folks say that, but this isn't anywhere as good. 2/5
Some songs, like Charlotte, were fun. Most songs, like La fille de mort, were painful.
Angry French man plays instruments loudly
French nine inch nails if it was the 80s
This being a french industrial rock opera made for a tough listen.
The Young Gods L'Eau Rouge After my initial whosdat I decided to listen without looking them up. I imagined them to be some French electronic types from 2015+. They are in fact an 80s band from Switzerland and apparently used lots of effective sampling which influenced people like David Bowie WOW, not sure if you can hear my sarcasm where you are, because while they may have influenced Bowie, he would never have made an album this bad – so he obviously took the good elements and made them into something unique. For its part this album sounded just dark and had elements of carnival music that has been used to such great effect by the Doors but here just didn’t work. It was just loop after loop of boring noise.
The hard part in rating this album is that I can't understand the lyrics. The easy part in rating this album is that I don't like the music very much. Overall, 2 stars or D+.
What's even going on here. This sounded like a lame angsty French carnival. They did make that sound as good as anyone could, but why did this happen.
The first track had me expecting to like this more than I did. Just not working for me.
Very weird wasn’t much of a fan
Esto es de lo más extraño que he escuchado. Parece como si Serge Gainsbourg se hubiese dedicado a hacer rock industrial mezclado con cabaret. Así suena esto. No obstante, los gritos que aparecen de vez en cuando le restan bastante. 2'5/5
As someone that speaks French but doesn't listen to/keep up with French music I was interested in this one. The cover grabbed my attention and I wanted to know what was going on. I no longer wonder anything... not for me at all! Best song: Les Enfants because of the cut up strings and production
Okay album. Industrial is really not my thing. Performing in French did not change my opinion.
I like the classic industrial beats, and want to like the sludgy, guttural vocals, but they just don't quite work for me.
It was ok, I feel like I have heard this band many times in the form of other bands before
I should have been on mushrooms for this
??????????????
Just couldn't get into this.
This started off okay, but got as bit too metal for me by the end. I like the fact it's all sung in French, but the music was a bit lumpen as it progressed.
A little spooky. But f them for their pretentious spotify bio
I really do try to listen to every album I get served. "Try" being the operative word. For this album, I tried and I failed. Industrial just isn't for me and that's a-ok. 2/5
2.
Knowing French would probably help me get more out of this band. Still not great.
https://imgur.com/gallery/blue-emoji-guy-SVTom52#mfaP0Mm
Gritty, fascinatingly inconsistent. The audio quality was the tell for the 80s but otherwise ranged in genres and energy levels and was nothing like anything I've ever heard before.
Reasonably interesting sound. Might make more sense if I spoke French.
I'm just not the French Industrial rock typa dude you know?
Very much not our cup of tea.
It might come as a surprise, but I’m not a big fan of weird French grunts.
Dark, explosive, avant-garde.
Eh, I was in a better industrial band. Pretty sure it’s here because it’s French and hence exotic rather than it being worthwhile. 2 stars.
I just know he’s singing about prison sex.
It's like Renaud and Tom Waits started an industrial band. I'm not saying this in a good way
What if Tom Waits and Metallica had a secret French love child? It would still likely sound better than this.
Meh. Music had good stuff but the accents and the lyrics. Tom Waits-at-home but with omelette du fromage.
If Billy Idol were a dramatic performing Frenchman in a dark carnival, this would be it. While that may seem great, the novelty wears quickly.
Heavy menacing riffs, hard hitting industrial drums, growling guttural throat shredding vocals, some mathy proggy bits. The bits where it all comes together really rip, but there's a lot of it that doesn't that's kind of dull, not enough tension or dynamism, all the menace but without the threat - ruins the suspension of disbelief and it all becomes a bit rediculous and laughable (les enfants, lol). Favorites: Crier les Chiens
Not for me, but at least they had a good time (I think? I can't understand them)
Nope. If I wanted to listen to Tom Waits, I would have, especially since Tom is not singing in French. Felt like I landed in a hardcore French circus act.
Interesting. But not something I'm gonna listen to again. Some cool production instances, but it's a weird mashup of genres that I already don't really like. Also, what type of mumbo jumbo language is this fella singing in? Learn English. English ain't that hard!
Hello! It's French metal, of the most industrial variety. I'm instantly invested, because I'm still quite smug whenever I can put my rudimentary French skills to use. The first track, weighing in at eight minutes of unabated noise, is almost intolerable, but it does improve from there. I'm going to say that if I liked industrial metal, I'd think this was good. I don't, so I don't.
This is, regrettably, simply too French for me.
Meh
A weird mix of musical theatre and thrash metal. It's a hard listen. Longue Route is one of the few highlights.
французский треш (или что это) как оказалось не увлекает меня
I gotta be honest and say I don't really know what to say about this one. Do I talk about how awful the singer's voice is and how he is trying to do death metal vocals over an accordion? Do I talk about the drummer who is playing way too fast for the other instruments in the lineup? Do I let anyone reading this know I can't speak French so it all sounded like gibberish to me, losing all semblance of how impactful the lyrics are? Do I talk about how unique and how unlike any other music it is and how even though I disliked it personally, I knew it made sense as a groundbreaker? All I know is that listening to this album was a bit of suffering but made me appreciate that I don't live in Germany.
Vocal is baaad
some interesting ideas, and covered a lot of genres. Production on the drums led this to feel quite lackluster to me
La fille de la mort: since I don't speak French I have no idea what's being said, but the vocals are kinda loud and conflict with the instrumentals (in my opinion). this song feels like an orange. not really my style of music though so it's a little hard to enjoy it properly. when the drums come in with the added beat and change in style it sounds SO NICE. considering the whole song though this one wasn't for me. Rue des tempetes: short and sweet. funky sounding. L'eau rouge - like the electric guitar and stuff. fun to listen to and I enjoy this one much more. Charlotte - this one is strange. I again like the instrumentals but the vocals throw me off and ruin it for me :/ it sounds creepy. Longue route - the vocals match the instrumentals much more here which makes it WAYY better. the ending was annoying though so I skipped the song in the last few seconds. Crier les chains - last song I listened to. I was too discouraged to finish the album :/
Oh nice ! Swiss industrial rock ! too bad it wasn't really good. 4/10 (+1 for international language)
It wasn't bad, just nothing good about it.
Remember seeing this on the "Worst Rated albums" list so knew I was in for a ride. The first track was what I was expecting with an annoying circus organ loop. After that I thought it picked up a bit. Still it had annoying experimentation like moving the sound from left to right. But there are some good thrash metal riffs in there (Lounge route). I was also kind of a fan of the vocals, sounded like if Tom Waits was french and decided to be a metal singer. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan but I think there are a lot of worse and blander music on this list. Weak 2.
French Laibach. Was nice to hear this sort of industrial music again but would have preferred Laibach. There were genuinely interesting parts but think the silliness of the whole thing overshadowed it.
Had some cool sounding riffs at times, but largely didn't do much for me. Bit Leibach esque, which was nostalgic in a way! Shouldn't think I'll be back to this, but not sure I've heard much like it before in fairness
Really rough album to listen to. Some decent instrumental work and though largely discordant there are some decent moments. But this is one of the worst vocal performances I've ever heard, and really makes this album unappealing to listen to. Wouldn't hate an instrumental release for this album. Top tracks: Rue des tempêtes, Ville Notre
Not great, but not terrible.
I don't speak enough French to actually know what I just listened to so I'll just say bon chance figuring it out for for yourself.
Wanted to love it but its just not very good. I like some of the ideas but these songs dont finalize into anything great. Songs that take too long to go somewhere in a short album isnt a good combination
cool voice, decent experimental album
I am sure France has some good music there somewhere. But not in this list.
Another reason to hate the French
I am not too sure about this one.
I didn't get this at all. French nu metal? I like weird music most of the time, but not this. I'll give two stars as they are enthusiastic about what they are doing, and it seems original to me.
If Rammenstein were french
2.1 2x first couple tracks much better than rest of album, catch up 3/18/25
It's interesting. Yeah. I am never going to listen to this ever again but I appreciate those that made this list for putting it on here
French death metal.
Industrial music isn’t really my thing, but this is at least a bit interesting and varied throughout.
Swiss industrial metal/rock is not my thing. Not without merit or terrible but will never listen again. So a low 2.
Pink Floyd meets Nine Inch Nails and tom waits is singing in french. Sounds like nightmares 2*
A cool sound. Love the vocals. But the tracks feel way too repetitive
I am a pretty big Industrial fan but this was mostly a miss for me. A few redeeming moments but not many
Very interesting. Tbh kinda fucked w it but also was uncomfortable by it haha
Dave malloy ass music
Very interesting. Favorite tracks: - Crier les chiens
Shit is minda interesting, feels very french. It's probably not the best way to put it, but feels circus-y at points. I like what they do musically and with the beats and time. I don't really care for the vocals. Maybe if I knew what was happening I'd enjoy it more, or maybe it's just be some French nonsense. It took me a few minutes to realize this wasn't a full band but samples and effects and synth and stuff, so props to them for that I guess. This one isn't really in my wheelhouse.
Hello? Itchy & Scratchy Land, open for business! Who are you to resist it, huh? Come on, my last paycheck bounced! My children need wine! I’m positive whoever did the accent for the Euro Itchy & Scratchy Land bit heard this record and parodied his guy’s voice. Man, the Swiss were into some weird shit in the late 80’s, huh? The harder songs are all right, but some of these tracks sound like creepy circus music.
Some of it is giving Tom Waits meets Nine Inch Nails on holiday in Paris. The orchestral industrial idea is interesting, but that's about as far as it goes for me. Wouldn't seek out- wouldn't want to replay.
Nah
I enjoyed parts of this album and the first song was great but overall it was annoying. I didn't enjoy the frenchman grunting in my ears for 40 minutes lol
Growly french industrial, with alot more metal than im used to for an industrial album.
Opener was pretty interesting but the rest of the tracks are meh
I’m not a massive industrial fan if it isn’t NIN, so this was a bit of a slog.
Not sure i get the appeal but I guess it was different at least
I actually liked the first song on this, it was very orchestral and a unique take on harder rock. I had higher hopes after that, but it kind of fell into more of a typical noisy industrial rock thing, which didn't do it as much for me. "Les enfants" at the end got back to it a bit, but most of this didn't really appeal to me very much (it definitely didn't help that it's not in English either). Favorite song: La fille de la morte Other: Crier les chiens, Les enfants 2/2/25
This probably would’ve hit me a lot harder at the time, but we live in a world with machine girl so this is pretty tame by comparison and the songwriting isn’t that good to make up for it
This is #day177 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... among my wife’s favorite genres, industrial (and its offshoots like electro-industrial, industrial metal, etc.) takes center stage. I’ve come to appreciate this side of her musical taste—after all, how many men get a wife who loves this kind of music? I’m fine with some industrial too now and then—Neubauten, Skinny Puppy, and Coil (thanks to her). But, this... is a bit too left-field (?) for me. I find those growling vocals particularly oppressing. At the same time, I get why Trent Reznor cites this band as an influence. I'm giving it a 2 out of 5 anyway. Sorry, wife. Looking forward to #day178.
This was pretty annoying but it had its moments. No business being on this list though.
This album makes me realize I should check out more non-English music. There's a whole world of music I'm missing out on. Having said that, this album is okay. It doesn't fit my mood today, but maybe another day?
It was okay I guess. Not really a fan even though I like industrial metal.
I fucking hate industrial
Audacious and bold. Also ugly and punishing. I admire its qualities, but I do not enjoy them. Not a must-listen in my book.
Not my style
Listened to this at bedtime. Dreamt of murderous clowns.
In a nutshell: strange and unusual Please do yourselves a favour and find the lyrics, even if they are in French. It’s dark and adventurous. It’s industrial cabaret. Don’t take it too seriously. Just listen. Overall: 4/10
That was a slog. French grunting over some relatively decent riffage, but nothing that really comes together as overly interesting. Nothing that I need to revisit anytime soon -- but at least it's better than Slint.
Pretty unique but I found it quite hard to listen to
Songs i know: 0 Songs i like:0 Jarring and grating music this, abrasive and offensive on my ears in some parts. Not a fan, won't be back here. They should strap people that torture animals to chairs and make them listen to this album on repeat. That being said it's still at least twice as good as Travis so it's scraping a low 2.
Was ok in parts. Overall not massively impressed
Well it's different!
First listen. Maybe not for everybody. Me included.
Difícil associar a língua francesa à essa psicodelia. Corajoso é a pessoa que faz esse tipo de intervenção artística. Seria um perfeito encaixe para várias trilhas sonoras.
The most listenable industrial album I've heard so far. I still don't like it very much, but it could be a lot worse.
30 seconds in, I'll say that I'm intrigued. Who knows if I'll like it (so far it sounds a little like circus music), but it's going to be completely new to me, and that's fun and interesting. I've gotten so tired of cookie cutter 70s rock, so anything new and/or different is so refreshing. OK, on to the actual thoughts about the album: It's not great. I don't know who this is for, really. It kind of reminds me of industrial in parts, but there's also a whole lot of something that sounds like an accordion. The vocals are kind of shit. All the lyrics are in French, so maybe it's genius lyrically, but I don't speak French. Overall, it's kind of experimental rock. Not the worst I've heard, but nothing I'm clamoring to hear again. Look, I stand by everything I said in the first paragraph. Discovering music is fun and energizing, and it's really the whole reason I started this project. That said, they can't all be zingers! And that's OK! So 5 stars to the project for including something unique and original, and 2 stars to the album for being a bit shit.
Maybe this is generous
Sensory overload the album
Angry French with his angry buddies pounding on their synthesizers.
Not my cup of tea. Instrumentals were solid but I couldn't get into the vocals. 'L'Amourir' was decent.
I'm sure they're saying something rebellious, but I sure as hell have no idea what it is. The riffs and vocals on this were good, but everything done on this album just feels underdeveloped.
This album does a really good job at creating a sense of unease. I wasn’t a big fan of how the album started. I think the second track onward is where it hits its stride. Unfortunately I don’t speak French so while I’m sure he was saying some deep things it mostly just sounded like the vocalist was trying to poop. Best songs were Rue Des Tempetes, Longue Route, and Les Enfants.
This is quite a confronting sound in place, being industrial and all. Still, didn't mind it. High twos.
Felt like a lot of the tracks were pretty grating. Too avant garde plus his voice made me want to smash my head into a table. Rest of it was aight. I feel like I liked the idea more than how it was arranged. Fav Songs: Rue des tempetes, Crier les chiens
The Young Gods are a Swiss industrial band that makes extensive use of samples in their work. They make edgy, angry, driven music, featuring the screaming/singing of Franz Treichler. L'Eau Rouge, their second album, is regarded as their best work. Much of this album is a rage-filled version of heavy metal. There are some bright spots, like the Tom Waits-ish "Charlotte," or the melodic opening track, "La fille de la Mort," which has a vaudeville feel to it, but these are unusual songs for the band. The majority of the songs are angry, and not particularly inspired.
I mean it's certainly a thing. Not My thing of course, but A thing
Ministry kidnaps an evil and angry Leonard Cohen then force feeds him heavy laxatives, and puts him on the toilet at center stage with a microphone while simultaneously a French orchestra is playing alongside trying to keep up with the industrial and fecal onslaught. I will say - it's different. Awarding a point for serious effort but honestly: holy shit. 3/10 2 stars
Was not expecting this French to sound so German. Not the worst thing I have ever heard, but I would not say I enjoyed it.
An interesting combination of styles and instruments here, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I spoke French. The prevailing heavy metal vibe is not overly unique.
French ramstein
C’est vraiment terrible. Je le donne un plus etoile parce que j’essaye appendre francais et le m’aider un peu
How do you say weird sh-t in French? Unlike a lot of weird music this has some musical merit and is interesting at times, but I really don't think I'll *ever* listen to this again. The vocals are quite off-putting. Highlights: "Rue des tempetes" (the strings and percussion are cool. The vocals are a bit disturbing. I never knew French could be that gutteral.), "Crier les chiens" (tense soundscape), Notable: "La fille de la mort" (starts like a traditional French chanson, but then gets kinda like Rammstein but French...), "Charlotte" (has an oompah thing going that's creepy when paired with the gutteral vocals), "Pas Mal" (music says post-punk fuzziness, but, again, those vocals...yeesh!)
Experimental stuffs but, catchy.
This did not float my bateau. Too angry and wierd
Well that was weird. Mixing genres is one thing and I've listened to plenty of albums from this list that do that. But jumping from one genre to another in the space of two songs is different kind of freedom. Do I like this "freedom act"? Not particularly. Still, there are worse albums here.
Not a fan
If Billy Idol and Marlyn Mason had a love child it would sound like this. Very interesting textures, especially for ‘89.
Not a huge fan of this one, but I can't call it bad. There's some interesting stuff here, but it didn't flow well to me. There were moments that the singer sounded like the singer from Rammstein decided to learn french. 2.5/5
Ok, but like the NIN x Pink Floyd comments are pretty spot on. It also acquired Metallica growling. Meh.
French Tom Waits
There's some neat riffage here and there, and the fact that most of the music is all samples and synth is neat - but it's generally abrasive and not very enjoyable.
Couldn't understand a word of it
I like tea but this is not my cup of it.
don't put a band together with no guitarist
If it was in English I probably would have hated it, but since it was in French it only slightly annoyed me.
What the hell was this French circus metal? No.
french rock meets nine inch nails.. i also hear a bit of rammstein sound in this. favorite track: l’eau rouge other picks: la fille de la mort, les enfants, l’amourir
I can see how this may have influenced artists I like (Mike Patton) but this was not a winner.
Not one of my choices to listen to again.
Absolutely cursed album. The opening track is one of the most horrid things that has ever befallen my ears. Harry Lime was right about the Swiss - their contribution to culture is a horrid one. I'd be lying if I said the album hadn't grown on me though, and some of it I kinda dig™. Tom Waits meets Oxbow would be a good way to describe it. Best Track: Les Enfants Worst Track: La fille de la mort
Kinda just sounds like Swiss Idles. I enjoyed some bits but I can't wait to never listen to this album again Best Song: Rue des tempetes Worst Song: Ville Notre
Ok, but i dont know what is happening
I've never heard of these guys, but I'm hopeful as I see that fans also like Front 242, one of my favorite industrial techno groups. I can see the I guess I can see the similarities, but Front 242 is way better, in my opinion. 242's Front By Front album is far superior. These guys throw some strings in there, and there's a bit more heavy rock. If I want hard, dirty industrial, I'm going for Godflesh. I like the music ok, but I just don't like the guy's voice. Ville Notre was my favorite on here. L'Amourir was pretty hard, too.
Not exactly sure what to think of this one. Maybe something was lost in translation for me. In the past I've listened to a lot of Brazilian samba music. Despite me not knowing Portuguese I enjoyed the delivery and the feel of it. With this Young God's album, I don't speak French but the delivery and performance of this is a bit disconnected for me. Cool sounds in the background but the feel of the vocals just isn't there. I've also listened to the original performance of Kletva (Ladytron did a remake) and I enjoyed that even though it was in Bulgarian. I've also listened to Hay Kacher performed in Armenian by Ontronik from Apex Theory and ready dug that. So I think a language barrier may not be the problem so much as the feel of the performance. Lastly, this sounded to me like a cross between Nine Inch Nails and Rammstein.
L'eau rouge (French for The Red Water) is the second album by The Young Gods, originally released in 1989. I've never heard of this band prior to listening to listening to this. They appear to be an industrial group based out of France. For 1989's "L'eau rouge", The Young Gods come out swinging with heavy use of sampling and drum machines, not unlike NiN, who would release their debut record a few months later. The sampling ranges from guitar parts to orchestral pieces, often placed sporadically throughout the tracks. The band also made liberal use of both drum machines and live drums, adding to the "industrial" feel of the album. Most of the tracks have a vary dark vibe to them. It's pretty clear that these guys were a bit ahead of their time, considering the hair metal that was dominating the airwaves in 1989. The one thing that irritates me about this record is the lead singer's voice. He does this growl type thing that reminds me a bit of Nick Cave at times and I'm just not digging it at all. I guess it goes along with the vibe of the record but there is no vocal variety between these tracks.
This was good even though I did not understand most of it lol
Rubbish
Oh yay. Some guy screaming in French.
live from the french haunted goth circus
Did not grow on me :)
The Young Gods sound familiar but looking at their popular songs I don’t recognize any of them. More French music! “La fille de la mort” is giving circus vibes.. and now it’s like hard rock metal on the second track? What is happening! It’s not getting better and I do not like it.
This was like a French NIN at times and others it sounded like Leonard Cohen’s final album. I couldn’t stay into it with the multiple changes in sound of the music throughout but enjoyed the metal jams that sound more like Metallica/pantera/NIN.
That's not my taste in musik.
Some alright guitar work at times, but otherwise, not a huge fan of the gravelly French man yelling into my ears.
Strange. Dark. Not atrocious but not great. Saved from a 1star by the contrasting music and haunting vocals.
Not my thing.
I’m not even sure what to say about this album. Kinda sounded like a harder, French Tom Waits. It didn’t really hold my attention.
Wasn't into this. Some of the instrumental aspects were good, but the constantly angry growling French vocals kind of ruined it. I liked the creepy and macabre atmospheric aspects of the music, but not much else.
2/5. whatever
Tom Waits sings in French over B-tier early Nine Inch Nails. Unfortunately, this isn’t that good. Maybe if I understood French, there’s something amazing happening lyrically here, but as it stands it felt like 80% of this album was a dude growling at me over a shitty, thin sounding, and uninspired snare drum. Another 10% was the first five minutes of the album, comprised of nothing but repetitive, purposely off-key carnival music and growly man attempting to actually sing and then sing like a creepy circus ringmaster. That’s 90% of the album that feels, at best, like a moderately interesting experiment.
That first song is such a high bar for entry lol. Absolutely one of the worst things I’ve heard while doing this project. I was close to tapping out. Thankfully after that, it kinda grew on me. But, like, the way a toe fungi grows on you.
interesting, but not really my taste.
Loved the whole album - album just flew by. Now a convert to Willie Nelson
experimentell, düster - nah!
I'm all for hearing random Swiss industrial metal albums from the late 80s before I die, but this fucking blows I'm sorry lol
Felt like huffing nitrous in an airport security line - rad moments involved but largely tense, loud, disorienting, and in a foreign language.
This came out in 1989? and does not sound dated one bit. It's industrial-ish and ...cinematic? The singer has a deep gravelly voice that I don't really like. He sings in what I assume is French. I don't like industrial music and a lot of this leans pretty heavy into that. The songs are not obvious, so it keeps you engaged, but I don't really care for this.
Una cosa bastante extraña. No empieza mal, pero luego empieza a gritar y desvariar.
Few, if any, other metal-industrial bands have even shown such an innate grasp of Old European waltz and oompah traditions. And if that isn't what the world needs now, one doesn't know what might be.
Weird, creepy and not the least bit appealing. It is interesting, in a strange way, if you enjoy an angry french guy and noise backgrounds. At worst, forgettable and avoidable, at best, Tom Waits lost in France and trying to get out.
Industrial rock, dark cabaret, symphonic metal. Algunas canciones comienzan hasta bien, pero luego entra el cantante a vociferar y la música a desbarrar. Un 2.
Never heard them and had no idea what to expect. Good start weird and fun enough for me in the beginning but by the 3rd song I got a bit lost and started skipping which I rarely do.
Circus type sound in beginning of songs and changed to darker notes.
Total miss for me. It was too samey, which is not inherently a bad thing. I just didn't like what that thing was.
these guys aren’t even from france
If the first seven tracks were anywhere near listenable, compositionally controlled and genuinely intense as the closer, I could see this being album an absolute necessity for this list… ..However, those first seven tracks have very little to latch onto, especially not without my least favorite part of this album’s stew, the vocals (the album’s true broth), coming to crash all sensible semblance. There are elements and attitudes behind this record that are decades ahead of their time. Those same genuinely interesting facets are held back by shoddy tech of the time. The guitar sounds (especially) and drums are very cheap sounding, giving the whole thing a presentation of hokey rather than cutting edge. It’s an interesting listen, for sure. But the kind of *confused head-tilt* kind of interesting.
Some of this was interesting, but I also could not understand any of it because it is French.
Didn't really like the screaming
no thanks
Their mothers probably fraternities with the nazis.
Idk Would listen again if I'll want to feel like a French mouseman
I was so excited when I saw this album was in French, but The Young Gods are basically a Gallic Rammstein. Too loud. Too angry.
When you make something French, it automatically becomes better. Except people and music
Not particularly interesting (and in French). One or two songs caught my ear but this doesn't warrant another listen for me.
Album 354 of 1001 The Young Gods - L'Eau Rouge Rating : 1.5 / 5 Rock in French from a Swiss band. Didn't do it for me. Interesting, though.
It was interesting, granted. But I actually enjoyed about a fifth of it. Extra star because I didn’t hate it as much as some others I’ve been subjected to so far.
Meh.
Nice sounding French industrial metal album, but I personally did not click with it.
The fact that this WAS NOT used in American Horror Story: Freak Show was insane. It's a magical, mystical ride that I wasn't expecting... but kind of enjoyed.
Puh, nicht geeignet für ein "schnelles Durchhören". Aber ich behalt die mal im Auge. Falls meine Industrial-Phase nochmal kickt.
Didn’t finish but a wee bit odd for my taste. Liked the guitar.
It was Ok. Probably won’t listen to it again.
Dommage. Wertung: 🥐(🥐)/5
It appears that French industrial rock from the late 80s was not what I was after this fine public holiday Monday
Has its moments but not in any rush to listen to it again.
# Playlist track - Rue des tempêtes # Notes - Has some interesting instrumentals at times, but that's all. - The album is a bit boring. The super industrial sound might have been interesting in the early 90s, but didn't age well. - Very hard to choose a track to add to the playlist. I didn't ENJOY a single one.
Kaj ja znam. Ne. Mozda nes sitno instrumentalno izvlaci al zapravo ne. Nije bas 2 nije bas dno dna 1.
I see that this is an influence on other bands but bot for me!
Have not heard anything like this. Not really digging it at all. Very dark, loud and macabre.
Nop
What have I just listened to?! Swiss French industrial metal apparently. And yet having found it bizarre and horrendous at first, I quite enjoyed a bit near the end and might give some of it another go. Some of it, I never want to hear again in my life.
French crap
Bit too industrial for me
Meh, teki mieli lopettaa kesken.
Paikoin toimi, mut pidemmän päälle ärsytti
I wanted to like this but I just couldn't get there, the idea of it is better than the execution.
2-
Not today, Switzerland. Pas aujourd'hui.
Always happy to take a trip outside the Anglosphere, I think this is my 30th album and only second one not in English (or instrumental by an English bloke). But just by reading the description, it doesn't immediately strike me as something up my alley, never been super into \"industrial\" music, but I'll try and go in with an open mind. Eh, I honestly just don't have a lot to say about this one. It was a little goofy at times, maybe just because it sounds a little funny to my ears to hear these dramatic vocal performances in French. I thought about giving this a "3", just in terms of like "I see what this is going for but its not for me," but I also feel like 3s are albums i wouldn't mind listening to again, and I don't think I'd really want to listen to this again. So, I'll go two. Sorry Young Gods.
not very good but at least it's not in english
A very creepy crawly album with a lot of interesting samples and structures. Not very enjoyable, but worth experiencing once I would say. Best song: La fille de la mort?
Some interesting stuff but I won’t be listening again
French Rammstein Punk?
Wtf sérieux. C'est trop intense. Je suis francais et je comprend pas trop le but de ce genre. Ça foitft jouer dans des shows qui ont vraiment pas de sens à une certaine époque. 2.5
This matched my road rage vibes. People seemingly forget how to drive in the rain. Glad this was on at the time. 2.5
nah
Foreign metal. Like rare earth metals. I know I need it, but really, how much do I want to have it?
Has a very "Du Hast" vibe, without anything being as close as entertaining as that song. French industrial is a bit tough to listen to and kind of a chore to get through. There are a few times the music gets a groove going, but the vocal delivery and foreign language makes it a bit more challenging to enjoy.
Not my thing.
Not terrible, but I've already listened to Tom Waits and liked that better
Impressively tedious, combining the worst of metal-industrial and oompah bands. It is notably cleaner and airier from a production perspective than most metal, but that's like saying some toxic sludge has a nicer patina than other toxic sludge. And to think one ever liked the Swans.
This is definitely an odd album with a unique sound. It sounds like the soundtrack to an art house 80s vampire flick. Some of it is quite harsh and industrial and the lyrics are pretty bizarre at times. The singer does have a very rough gravely voice. Not for me.
Maybe I would have liked this better if I could speak French. Otherwise probably never listen again.
The entire time I listened to this I kept picturing Bruce Springsteen dressed as Pennywise singing French metal in a circus tent. 🤷🏻♀️ it is unique but I probably won’t listen again.
kinda zoned out while listening to it. could i write poetry to it: n
This album made me want to punch a street mime, but not in a good way. The parts that I liked were done to better effect by bands like Ministry, Wire, Front 242, and Skinny Puppy. I hope none of those albums were excluded from this list in order to include this one.
Ok probably the weirdest albums on this list, like bizarre French grunge music. Makes me want to protest or something. Not bad as it’s certainly entertaining 2.3
E visst ikkje så glad i fransk metall
French....
...
It was all right. Not my cup of tea.
Not my style
A little too French for me
First track is anxiety inducing
Beetje raar
Nee
Disney
wtf
Actually kinda liked the trippy circus-like French oddness up front, promised something new and different which I’m always down for. Seemed that the creative spirit left after the first track or two, though, as the album ground itself down into a monotonous Grindcore kinda thing? As a whole the LP felt a bit rushed and lacking in direction, disappointing given the jolt of novelty it promises up front.
Weird gothic industrial sound. Only listened once. Wasn’t for me. Didn’t enjoy the music or the vocals.
Weird and French.
French Rammstein
I'm tempted to rank this higher because it's so weird and I think some of the tracks have a lot of artistic merit but it just does not sound that good most of the time. Will be revisiting soon to befuddle and disorient friends when I'm on the aux.
Müzikler güzeldi ama sürekli gırtlaktan söylemesine dayanamadım
Although I can’t understand what is being said, the music gave me anxiety at certain points.
Ok in parts but quite derivative. Part Industrial with tinges of claasical accompaniment. what can I say- not bad but equally not good either.....
Something too odd
¿En francés? ¿De Suiza? Los pocos oyentes de Spotify no prometen mucho y el hecho de que en la wikipedia lo principal del álbum sea que está en esta lista de 1001 discos no suele ser buena señal. Me lo he escuchado y hasta he repetido alguna canción. Vamos que se puede oír una vez en la vida y ya.
Not feeling it
I really tried and man, this lot make a hell of a noise but I found it mostly unlistenable. Kudos, there's a lot of heart and soul in this, but no thank you.
Euro punk cabaret. Not as impossible as Einstrurzende Neubauten to listen to but hardly easy. Probably awesome live.
Weird French industrial
The Young Gods are a Swiss band who sing in French. Wikipedia gives the genre as Industrial Rock, Dark Cabaret, Symphonic Metal, some might call it pretentious. I quite liked "Rue des Tempêtes" but could quite happily live without the rest of the album.
french meth vampire music
Interesting album. Sort of reminded me of the Butthole Surfers without the humor (I think?), but also like a French Swans. The sampling technique is innovative, if jarring (is this what comes on in French people’s heads when they see tourists?). Couldn’t listen to this casually, but will file it under the gym agro Euro edition.
Literally none of this left an impact on me. Is it loud and abrasive? Yes, but none of it actually struck a chord with me, for better or worse. There's parts that sound like Tom Waits, but when this guy does it, it feels gross, not interesting. I don't hate this enough for a one star, but I wish stuff like the string samples were used more interestingly.
They are clearly talented musicians and what they've created is impressive. However impressive doesn't necessarily mean good.
When I saw "industrial" in the description I got excited but this is not what I had in mind. Another Tom Waits except this time he's angry and French (or Swiss). Some of the orchestration is pretty cool and I might be able to get into it if it weren't for the vocals.
Le côté lourd, opulent et cinématographique devrait me plaire; mais la voix et les textes m’irritent, entre autres par leur aspect répétitif
- instrumentals are okk - maybe don't let the heavy smoker be the lead singer
its not irredeemably bad but its also really irritating
some parts of the instrumentals were so good just to be ruined seconds after, huge lost potential 3,5/10
Did not enjoy this, but it was definitely interesting. My French isn't good enough to understand what he's on about, but the titles of the tracks suggest some unpleasantness that definitely chimes with how it sounds. A lot of the commenters on the site mention how it sounds a bit like Tom Waits in places, and I'd agree, a really deep raspy voice at the centre of it all, but it also goes into the creepier end of metal in places. 2/5, worth one listen but no repeat.
Wow - This is not at all what I expected. I've seen The Young Gods name around for decades and (for no good reason) I kinda thought they were something like Fun Lovin' Criminals. Most of this did nothing for me, but some of the more atmospheric stuff was interesting.
Meh
It's funny, when I was listening to the live album that came out this week, I said to myself that I wanted more French music. The gods listened, but this wasn't what I was expecting. Kind of a french metal/alternative type album. I didn't love it, but I've appreciated the uniqueness of some of these albums we have gotten recently.
Listened Before? N This was surprisingly good for a foreign language album... The music is spectacular and the singing was tolerable. I won't listen to it again but it's not a 1 like many others. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Rue des tempetes
I did not like this nor finish it. There's a time and a place for this. Next time I'm a spy in a French nightclub going tet a tet with a criminal mastermind... I'll give it a spin.
Predominantly ugly.
Ehh not what I expected. Can't say I'm a fan. Interesting album but not for me.
French alt circus rock? The instrumentation here isn't bad, but having the singer belch his vocals really brings down the entire album. I'm going to be generous with a 2/5 here.
Well that was definitely something.
Bruh…
Well that was deeply unpleasant. Point for uniqueness I suppose
Was expecting something better here, I like loud and noisy. I’m not even gonna blame low score on the French, that didn’t bother me, I found the majority of this to be bland. There were sparks of shine here just nothing really drew me in. Wasn’t necessarily awful just meh 2.5 stars
Heel stereotype franse hijgstem
french songs? nice. I don't think I finished it, the post-industrial sound is pretty harsh.
After the lure of the band name and album title the disappointment of the actual music. Raucous, a mis-melding of styles and lacking grace.
shite!
Rimeligt anstrengende
Not for me, too hard and heavy
Have no idea what i just listened to. But i didnt like it much
Celui merte Or something, I'm not fluent in French and apparently neither are these guys.
started off so strong with the weird long rock/orchestral song but then the rest of the album was just metal in french and I wasn't really a fan.
En tykkää, liian teatraalista. Kielestä piste.
Onpas aika häröä kamaa! 😂 Vaihtelee ihan kunnon paahtamisesta johonkin sirkusmusaan. Jos osaisin kieltä niin sais ehkä lisää irti, mutta nyt aika hätäistä on 2/5
This sounds like foreign Billy Idol. Instrumentally, every song is quite different. The language thing is a tough barrier for me...
It is French industrial rock. I have no idea what they are saying. I made it through it. Rammstein is better.
French metal is cray
Oh maaan, it is French :(
Interesting
Weird, French
I had no idea what was going on at any moment, L’Amourir and Pas Mal slaps though.
imagine being french
