Like music for a silent film. I'd probably enjoy listening to it live, but on record it did nothing for me.
This is not something I would have chosen on my own, and though I'm sure this is a MUST listen it had some good tunes. Especially Little Italy and Nuevo Tango. But there are times it felt a little elevator-y
It's fine. I appreciate the musicality to this, but it's more like background music. It's more atmospheric, than melodic, so I'm kind of unclear why this album is on the list. I could see myself listening again, but as background music, not as something I'm actually engaging with.
I tried, I really did. It's not for me. The violin was good but overall, it missed the mark
Well, this is unexpected ! Can't wait :-) ... Hmm ok. The ole vibrometer wasn't as fun as expected !
I think I just need to see this kind music being played. It's not so enjoyable via a recording through headphones. DNF
First listen I didn’t like it at all until Laura’s Dream and from then onwards I didn’t mind it as much. Second listen I didn’t dislike it but it isn’t anything that’s going to stick with me. It’s nice background music. Top Track - Laura’s Dream
The No Tango.
This was chill and different than I expected but didn’t pop for me.
Not for me...
An interesting album. Not really my jam, but wasn't bad.
It was alright however I think I prefer the old Tango
Too much xylophone
My first tango album. Sounded like a movie score at times.
It took more than two tries to finish listening.
Not my thing
I prefer the Old Tango
Sounds like the score of a Bugs Bunny cartoon
Pleasant and interesting, but not something I would revisit.
Very technically proficient, but just not a sound/style/genre that does much for me, unfortunately.
Not bad, just not for me.
Sounded like the background music for a 90s point and click adventure game
You know when you wake up and you crave a really good breakfast bagel, but all you have in your cupboard is some novelty cereal you bought on a whim? In other words, I was not in the mood for this at all.
I felt like I was at a day spa for an Italian circus
God damn this was boring and drawn out. I just didn’t want to keep listening after the first billion year song
While I appreciate the musicianship, this is not an album I would choose to listen to again. I would, however, really enjoy being at their concert.
A fine instrumental album. Not my style, but clearly talented.
Noioso ma può funzionare come background
Nogen er vist gået forkert i byen. Det her rr jo klassisk musik.
Just because you can doesn’t always mean you should. Piazzolla is clearly a master of his craft, but The New Tango feels more like a technical showcase than an album meant to be enjoyed front to back. Some passages are easier to sit with than others, but overall it’s a challenging listen that never really pulls me in.
Fine
# Album Name: The new tango # Artist: Astor Piazzolla # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Wow, this was so boring. I know you cant judge a book by its cover but when the album on this blokes official youtube channel only has 371 views then you know you are in trouble. What a snoozefest. # Top Tunes: No idea # Would I listen to it again? Not unless i was in an elevator
5/10
Not for me. Vibraphone sucks. I'm ok with the Bandoneon and Violin and think I would have given a higher score if it was just those instruments. I had to skip a bunch, couldn't take it anymore. 2/5. This isn't a 1 simply because it unique. It would get a 0 for enjoyment.
Artiste inconnu. =>2/5
jazz
Weird vibe… it gould fit into a comedy heist movie from the mid 60’s
- Niet voor mij. Klinkt als videogamemuziek. - 0 nummers toegevoegd aan MMMM
I found this a bit of a tough one to listen to, some parts I enjoyed, towards the end, but it felt a bit minimalistic sometimes and there were quite difficult passages.
Pleasant but forgettable, more akin to background music you’d hear in a lift.
Couldn't quite get into this album - despite generally being a fan of classical, jazz and world music
Don’t really know what to say about this. I didn’t love it, didn’t hate it, wouldn’t listen to again
Pretty decent background music, enjoyed it I suppose
Laadukasta, mutta vähän liian kikkailevaa, 2/5
I’m sure it’s excellent if you like this sort of thing
I don't hate it, but it does sound like it should be a cartoon soundtrack.
Day603 - i was expecting a little pizzazz but it sounded like a trip to the world of make believe to see king friday
It’s well performed but not my vibe. First 20 minutes were like a xylophone solo. It felt like a bit a chore to get through the extremely long tracks.
Really didn’t enjoy the vibraphone at all. This new tango “Nuevo tango” is not my favorite either.
What the bleedin’ hell is going on?
I really struggled with this, I think its my Guantanamo album
I don't really wanna sit an listen to a whole tango album, tbh.
Sooo looong. I dunno, live lounge or whatever that was. Not the worst but not really for this list.
So fusion of jazz and tango. Not much of a jazz guy and don’t even really now what tango is other than a dance. Gave this a try. Certainly wouldn’t have picked to listen to this on my own and probably won’t ever listen again. Kuddos to these guys for doing there thing… and if it’s spontaneous live, then that’s impressive. But it’s their thing, not mine. Zzzz. No thanks on this one.
Really not my jam, felt like the world’s longest piano ride. Generous 2 to acknowledge that it is skilled musicians at it
Makes me sleepy. And I love jazz. Just not very invigorating
too many repeated segments. it sounds like a looping video game soundtrack.
I liked the first two - sounded like music that'd be used in Professor Layton or Study Ghibli - the rest tended to be too jumpy/dissonant for me.
Good, but not great. I'm not upset that I listened to this, but I don't think it's something I needed to listen to.
Very well recorded for a live album but this isn’t really my thing. I thought tango was more upbeat, danceable? This was just slightly pretentious jazz. Didn’t do much for me
Painfully silly. These are not my people, and this is not my jam. 2 stars because he sounds so fucking happy.
Not a good album. Its ok at best but lots not to like. Good background music.
Not a good listen for me. Made it about 25% through - not uptempo enough for me. I’m sure some will enjoy but not me.
2/2.5
I never really got into the original tango.
I liked some of it, didn’t care for some of it. The thing that puts it at 2 is that I don’t think this needed to be included here.
Surprised at how little I enjoyed this. I can appreciate the musicianship but still it didn't really do much for me. 2.5/5
Not bad if you think of the tango scene(s) in True Lies, Gomez and Morticia Addams cutting a rug, or the episode of Saved By the Bell (Malibu Sands) where they threw the girl's Sweet 16 party......but really not for me. The crowd LOVES the xylophone player (Gary Burton?) though, I'll tell you that much. It's an okay listen for spreadsheet navigation, or maybe reading a book, but nothing I'd really seek out. Would still play this before Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. (Yea I'm still mad about that one 24 hours later)
Listened to this while running and another one I wouldn’t have picked (it also doesn’t do so well as running background). I like the vibraphone and accordion like sounds, clearly talented musicians but I don’t get a lot of tango from it. More jazzy fusion. Just ok for my taste buds. I’m ready to rock.
bugs bunny type shi
Not an album that was really a must hear. Not a 1 though.
Much more interesting than the Bon Jovi I just suffered through.
En fuldstændig skør blanding a tango/jazzguitar, harmonika og vibrafon
This is REALLLYYYYY LONG. "I thought it was INTERESTING" - Tim Robinson. Some of the songs go on wayyyyy too long. There are some interesting things here, but not something I would listen to regularly. One question...is this really tango??? Idk. It didn't feel like it. Liked Songs: "Vibraphonissimo" , "Nuevo Tango" , "La Muerta Del Angel"
Skillful musicians with a great live performance but not my preferred style of music.
This might sound harsh...but this is a bit too boring for my taste.
tango, 1987 -> 2
Music for fine dining!
Impressive. But not sure the time or place of this for me. Maybe while I'm strolling the streets of a foreign country and want to feel like I am in a movie? Not sure!
Hotel lobby music.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
I liked the first song, but then the rest all sounded the same, like circus music.
I generally like jazz and jazz-adjacent things, but this was not my cup of tea.
A little too much marimba and not enough accordion for me
This album made me feel like I was a 1940s spy. Interesting to listen to, but not really my go-to music.
Not my thing.
Pretty impressive this was recorded live. Kind of a nice Sunday morning vibe, which makes it convenient that it showed up on a Sunday draw. I've never really been a wine and jazz guy, so not sure when I'd really have occasion to throw this one on.
Impressive. But not sure the time or place of this for me. Maybe while I'm strolling the streets of a foreign country and want to feel like I am in a movie? Not sure!
Not that there was anything wrong with this, but doesnt feel crucial as an album. Guy is a talented musician, but there seem to be a lot of these types of albums
That's sure alotta Glock. Or maybe it's a xylophone I'm not sure.v
Favorite Track: Little Italy
Olyan mint a budapest bár szöveg nélkül
It's instrumental live music. Not much to say.
A very interesting sound and well worth the exploration. Some of the most adventurous instrumentation you could expect from a jazz album. While the recording does mostly capture the energy of the live performance, some of the tracks do outstay their welcome, and the 1 hour runtime does seem a bit excessive. Best Tracks: - Operation Tango - Vibraphonissimo Worst Tracks: - Laura's Dream Rating: 5/10
Not my thing, sorry. Not bad, just not my thing. I can see how others would appreciate it a lot, but I don't.
Wow, these tracks were long.
5/10 I was getting worried I would have to give this a 1, while this is not the kind of album I want to give a 1 to. Thankfully, it got considerably more engaging in the second half. Farfetched maybe, but Laura's Dream vaguely reminds me of Paranoid Android. Highlights: Nueva Tango Laura's Dream
1.5.
A bit repetitive, like decent overall but why as long as it is
I’m glad I listened to this, but I probably won’t return to it. It certainly is a jazz tango album featuring lots of vibraphone. My favorite song was Nuevo Tango.
It's fun. Gets sorta repetitive after a while. I'm sure it's more fun actually live. Don't love the live albums on here. Probably would've enjoyed more if some stud put a rose in my mouth.
Compositions interessante, instrumentation insoutenable. 2.5!
YES ANOTHER LIVE ALBUM!!!
Not sure how to apprpach this sort of music! Sure its great but just felt like i was on hold.
5/10 Nicely done but not for me. Not what I expected a Tango album to sound like - jazzy, relaxed, vibes. Could be the soundtrack to a heist movie set in Buenos Aires Best: Vibraphonissimo
I usually like tango music. And it's usually quite sexy and sensual. This had WAY too much xylophone...and the xylophone took all the sexiness away.
Plinky plonk music.
Definitely apple tango if I had to pick one.
This one was not for me. Clearly skilled musicians, but the end product really didn't do anything for me, except annoyance at the vibraphone that absolutely tore my nerves.
After complaining about the number of Bowie albums on the list, I stayed up late to get my next album and was punished with this. I will henceforth be less outspoken with my concerns. That doesn’t mean this is a bad album, just that it’s jazz from 1987 and who can evaluate that? Not me, and I’m skeptical that the editors of 1001 can either. Even the guys on the album cover look confused. The moral of my story is, don’t complain about too much David Bowie (the artist with the most! albums on the list, nine??!!). And if you already complained, well, I guess that’s why got this album too.
I'm certainly not averse to listening to music outside my comfort zone, and I know Astor Piazzolla is renown as a master of his craft. But I don't like it. Just as a good meal has a blend of contrasting elements, I think a good arrangement should have contrasting elements to balance one another. These three primary instruments (bandoneon, vibes, and piano) all lack a good attack--the piano is mixed so far back it's hardly audible, and the vibes and the bandoneon lilt over the audience almost as though they were played from a separate room. Instead of a masterwork of tango nuevo, this recording sounds like the buzzing of a fly at the window.
I can see why Nuevo Tango never caught on. Both players and everyone else here is extremely proficient at their instrument. Especially the violin and piano playing on this album I find to be really beautiful. The star instruments of the show don't really appeal to me though. I don't think the sounds gel well together and the entire album seems to go nowhere. There's quite a few interesting moments and I'm glad to have heard it but I don't think this is something I'll ever touch again.
Man I was really hoping this would've been better than what it ended up being. I wanted to enjoy it but often times it was just droning on and on and not in a jazz kind of way. Was even expecting more traditional tango but I feel like this wasn't it. 4/10.
It’s not awful. But I didn’t need to hear it.
I actually needed some good background noise at work today so this was helpful Best Song: N/A Rating: 3.0/10 2 Stars
Remember not liking this one. I think it was mainly because I was having a bad day. Thought it was uninteresting and a bit annoying.
I tried. The musicianship may be A+ but it just washed over me as background muzac without making any impact. Not terrible just not for me.
#492. This album and this whole genre, whatever it may be, gets a nope from me. This shit is like nails on a chalkboard. Like if you bought a 3 year old a toy xylophone and then had to listen to them play it for an hour. Just so much noise for no reason. 2/5: fuck
Nice, relaxing, would not pick it again.
Kept reading it as a "badminton" player. Which may have been more interesting to be honest.
Decent background noise while taking down Xmas decor. But not engaging in anyway. Would maybe use it as the music search prompt if I needed background music for a 60s themed cocktail party. In conclusion, this is background noise.
It’s worth hearing because it’s impressive, but it sounds like the soundtrack to a movie I don’t want to see and I don’t think I’ll be coming back.
- Welch vibes! Bisschen alte detektiv Film vibes, -teilweise gute soli - aber irgendwie passiert auch nich so richtig viel
5 minutes in I was tired of the xylophone. Music would've been chill if it wasn't mixed into the front of every track.
Frekar boring.
Lítið stuð í þessu og skil ekki hvað þessi plata er að gera á þessum lista. Lyftutónlist, enginn tangókraftur í þessu.
French elevator music, waste of time. There's a crowd clapping for some reason.
volevo che mi piacesse così tanto e invece che barba e che noia. sadness.
I dunno. To me it sounds like a mix of classical, jazz, and maybe Balkans music. Some bits were kinda enjoyable.
Too plinky plonky elevator music
It would make for good background music in a movie
Fairly enjoyable, not really my cup of tea. 2/5.
I love gary burton but god this stinks
Maybe I would like old tango better?
I liked The Old Tango better
A new style for me, and not something I would normally listen to. A toe tapper.
Today I learned what a bandoneon is. So that's something. Look, this is not for me, so I hate to judge it by my enjoyment. Ready for the next one.
Good but not my vibe
Made me quite angry at times?
Oh gosh no. I don’t get albums like this. They should be seen live.
General impression: love jazz, love Burton, this is not my thing Detailed review: It’s a little too silly soundtrack-y. Like it sounds like it is meant to score some silly little scenes or something. It just isn’t really my vibe, maybe it’s because I haven’t explored or connected with this kind of subgenre before. I dunno. I adore Gary Burton’s vibraphone work but it’s really just the compositional style of this that leaves me cold. Deeper thoughts (context): sorry Score: 2 Number of albums left to review: 963 Number of albums from the list I’d consider “must-listens”: 21 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 17 (including this one)
is ok aber fad
All instrumental and somewhat chaotic, but it's pretty incredible for a live performance, and they're very obviously great musicians. I don't think it's really my type of music, but it's pretty good. The mallets get a little grating to me after a while.
Didn’t even know old tango really. Enjoyed first track, not so much the remainder. Plenty of virtuosity on display. Listened to the album twice, but not sure I will return.
Jazz meets the tango to rapturous applause on this live album. It felt like I was listening to the soundtrack to an old screwball comedy movie. This kind of jazz is not unpleasant but it did ten to fade into the background. Best Tracks: Milonga is Coming; Little Italy; Nuevo Tango
I just don’t get it. Why was it on the list? It wasn’t impressive and didn’t make me go wow at any point. I honestly can’t believe people paid and chose to listen to this for an hour of their lives. Really stupid I don’t get why this was on here or why I needed to listen to it. Whateve
Playing the live album recorded at Montreux - hope it's the right one. It's mostly pleasant and easy listening to start. Gary Burton steals the show a bit on Vibraphonissimo. Little Italy is quite pretty as well. It all started to wash over me after a bit, although Operation Tango had some good parts.
Hmmm. Interesting, but sounds more like the soundtrack to a 70’s movie, than music in its own right. Not really a favourite
Some good moments and songs but overall I found it pretty boring. My first experience with real tango. I’m sure there’s a lot to love here but it just didn’t resonate for me and the last 3 songs especially were a slog for me to get through.

Just not into the tango I guess
yes it's fantastically played, and I've not listened to any other new tango, so horizons are broadened. But it is also very meandering - the jazz bit I guess. 2.5.
That’s very boring album. I don’t love tango at all. I rated 2 because violin sometimes very heartbreaking.
Excited to see an artist I'd never heard of. Disappointed after listening. Not something I'll be returning to.
Gave it an honest shot but it just didn't do much for me. Kinda boring. I'm sure there's a degree of lack of exposure but I think it's mostly just not my thing.
Nice to have on as background music for doing chores and cleaning up. As I'm not a big tango fan it was hard for me to see what makes this album stand out as a 1001er.
Interesting and very talented, but not something I would want to listen to again.
This is the goofiest shit ever
7 tracks, 59'. This won't be easy. I don't feel great about giving this a two, but I am never going to revisit it.

Good craftsmanship but the music is easily lost to my ears
Never heard this before, and never heard of the artists. I didn't really think this was the type of music that was on this list. In any case, the music sounds just fine, but just left scratching my head.
Very easy-listening and quickly fades into background music for me.
Seems like it doesn't belong in this list. Not because it's not good (or bad), but because it's an album of Tango music.
Not my type of music but OK to play in the background.
Half of this sounds like when they do a "serious one" on Strictly, and the other half gave me a panic attack. It's a bit much.
instrumental stuff just doesn’t work for me unless it’s something weird. i just zone out
This was a mix of PBS children's programming and a weird panic attack where I'm a delivery boy but trying to ride a bike in lose sand.
Interesting arrangement of instruments. Accordian teams up with a vibraphone and it's quite nice. Something I would expect to hear at Nan & Gramps. I can't say this will come up in my Playlist again till I maybe hit 70 but the list provides...2.4.
I can't say I expected much as I got to the artists wiki and Spotify pages. I'm not familiar with tango in any way really. There's some pretty crazy arrangements that include some rapid pace xylophone? and string work. Others are a little more somber with some pretty emotive strings and piano. While an hour of it was more than I needed, there was more than enough to take in that I don't regret the listen. That being said I'll file this away forever as a "huh, kinda cool I guess". This dude's Spotify discography is ridiculous. It seems like they recorded every show he ever played and just posted it up. 2.48 stars
When I awoke to see the being the album I was definitely disappointed simply because it’s not something I’m used to or desire usually. However that’s the whole point of this, to be exposed to new music styles and genres. Given that, I think this album leaned toward the “okay, and” side for me but at points it was nice to listen to. I see why it’s on this list however not something I really enjoyed.
Nuevo tango was ok, rest was boring
this is wild and I guess it is good but I just couldn't stand it...
I torn. Part side truly enjoyed but other parts were too frenetic for me. You definitely have to be in the mood for it. I’d give it a two or three.
I’m not one to hate on ambient music like this and it was interesting to hear tango for the first time but this was to the point that it basically sounded like royalty free music that would be on it’s always sunny in Philadelphia or something. Not bad to listen to but I could barely pay attention to any of it before my mind sought out other stuff to engage with.
Two-thirds chill vibe, one-third a little too much freeform jazz. The violin scratches on "Nuevo Tango" were reminiscent of the Psycho soundtrack - very unsettling. Not my favorite.
There was some good on this album, but the barrage of freeform minor key rambling was disconcerting for me. Not a great listen.
Nearly identical songs. Improv jazz like.
No idea
2 never cared for italian "music"
Well, it's definitely something I wouldn't have ever listened to without this list. Decent background music but not for me.
I'm torn on this one. If I were in the audience when this was recorded live, I could see myself being absolutely enraptured. This genre of nuevo tango music is surprisingly anything but boring. Sure, a few songs stretch on too long without going anywhere, but for the most part this was a very dynamic listen. However, I think that as a packaged album, most of the appeal is lost. I don't see myself putting this on again unless I host a party with an '80s Argentina theme.
in terms of musicianship, in terms of technique, in terms of artistry and performance, this is incredible in terms of the music i like, this isn't for me. It kind of sounds like Final Fantasy music, which is a compliment for sure, but at the same time, i am not sure that records like this are the reason i decided to take on this challenge. one and done lad
Found this tough going at times. Not really my thing
This likely a good album for this genre, but I don't think this genre is good for me. I didn't dislike it, but it didn't move me in any way.
I don't really get into it, e.g. the first track is hookless and long, but there are some nice moments later on.
Meh? This doesn't seem super good?
I accepted it for what it is and quite enjoyed it.
Barely noticeable album, kept forgetting it was on
I don’t mind the genre but this wasn’t my cup of tea
After one hour I have learned I do not like tango
I'm sure someone loves this, not for me though. I didn't hate it and that's the best I can say.
I'm not saying it's bad, I just don't want to listen to it.
made a great soundtrack to Baldur's Gate 3. French Riviera feel, but nothing stood out overall
What in the PBS fever dream was this 😂
Starts out as interesting background music. Somewhere in the 5th song I couldn't handle it anymore. Felt like being stuck in some kind of silent movie about an insane person at the circus.
Probably great to see live, but I'm not revisiting this one.
Wack. Every other album on this list feels like a joke
Fine. It's slow jazz. Not crazy about it.
Very impressive musically, but not terribly interesting or enjoyable for me. If you're into this sort of thing, I could see it being amazing. But I'm not, so it wasn't.
Did,'t know they were still doing this kind of thing. It could be from the 60's under 'Experimental' Jazz. It's not unpleasant but I've heard a lot of stuff like this from the early Jazz greats and the only difference would be that it's slanted towards Tango?
I understand the skill and the talent, I just don’t personally appreciate it.
Simply not my thing
Tango album. Not for me.
It was fine; nothing to write home about.
1 star for amount enjoyed. 1 star because I know they are talented. But felt like i was listening to elevator music.
Sounded like an attempt at modern classical music, didn't get much tango out of it. Every song lasted too long and was pretty pointless. Just a frantic mess. Clearly talented though, just not for me in the least.
I like tango I thought they added elements that were kinda whack -5/10
First song almost put me to sleep. Second song woke me up but then got boring. Idk how you could watch this live. High 2.
This was surprisingly good. And really great to have in the background while working. But it is not special at all. Can't be a 3 compared to the other amazing 3 albums.
Not my thing, won't listen again.
Ever been stuck in a waiting room, this was the soundtrack.
this one goes out to all the musicology students milonga is coming laura's dream
Will never listen to or think about this again but musically impressive, I suppose. Incredibly forgettable.
Nie moja bajka.
Like being in an excited elevator that occasionally claps at you. 1.5*
Not much to say here... 2.5
This was very different to everything else I’ve listened to so far. I know a little Albeniz so tango music isn’t new to me but this was pretty interesting and experimental, and it worked well as study music. It really dragged tho, lots of pieces had interesting sections but it was far too much for me. Not bad at all, but I wouldn’t ever pick it out to listen to. 2.5/5
Nah, not my thing
I guess I don’t like tango… there were some interesting arrangements but it was too dramatic and lacked the cool of other jazz albums I’ve enjoyed. I also put accordion in the same dark cupboard as the harmonica… these instruments are surely only enjoyable to the people playing them. I’m going to be completely honest and say I gave up on this. Not for me.
Elevator music for a very fancy hotel. I thought tango music would be faster?
This is just not for me. It's not exactly unbearable or anything but it's a hard pass.
Sure
I don't even know. This is such a left curve I can't even be mad about it.
A nice little Italian musical piece. Favourite: Little Italy Least Favourite: unknown
Not exactly sure what I just listened to. They used just about every instrument under the sun, especially violins and xylophone. There wasn't really a ton of structure, it felt like mostly ambience or short, jazzy ideas that went all over the place. Wasn't really my cup of tea but I can respect it.
It was ok, not a huge fan of the accordion
Average, but can appreciate the effort and skill they have. An Argentinian & American walk into a bar and this is what you get. I have nothing of value to add to this. Best: Vibraphonissimo Worst: Laura's Dream
Fun and jazzy, but not my style.
It was good. But "tango" music seems to be a strange genre to include in the 1001 albums I must hear before I die. I would not have listened to this without this project. Haha.
It wasn’t bad, but it made me really mad
Meh
Avant-garde movie soundtrack music. I didn't hate it, can't say I'd ever go out of my way to listen to it again.
Not really my thing. Didn't hate it, but I was glad it was over.
sorry i’m sure it’s fine i just can’t take accordion & vibes seriously
This is one of the more boring offerings made by the album generator. You Know what becomes really annoying upon extended listen? A vibraphone, which is heavily featured (Gary Burton is apparently a renouned vibraphonist) on this record. Astor Piazzolla's bandoneon playing makes it feel like you are in a French/Italian cafe. This whole album is call center hold music or elevator music. It was so hard to stay focused on this one. I caught myself drifting off into a daydream several times throughout. 58 minutes is quite a long time to endure this "new tango/jazz hybrid". It wasn't necessarily bad, just really boring. I don't think I would listen again. On a dreary fall day, all this did was lull me into a trance, and almost put me to sleep. Favourite song: La Muerta Del Angel (one of the shorter songs on the record) Least favourite songs: I don't know, the whole album just ran together so bad, I couldn't really differentiate good from bad. 2/5
Ik schrok even.
I agree with the elevator guy, there’s clearly plenty of artistry and mastery at play here but none of it is thrilling or the least bit engaging at all
Felt like a Tom and jerry cartoon, purely chase scenes
It’s tango, okay, sure. It’s not making me feel the happy tingly things I expect from the tango though. More bland than sultry, so it’s a bit of a letdown.
So that music is playing when you are waiting for doctor's appointment.
OK jazz music, yes, but I got the point after one track. Yet again, I fail to see the special spice that merited this particular album's inclusion here above others (but then again, I should be used to that by now). Is it the token xylophone/accordion this list needed ever so badly?
I do not think this is my thing...
There is only so much song you can have with a xylephone. The true tragedy of this album, on top of it being a live album, is there is Barely any accordion as I see on the album cover. Not sure why but this was a bummer album. The music was fine, this just felt like the kind of record you see in the 50cent bin.
I was excited for some tango, but this seemed mostly a bore unfortunately
This is allowed, but classical isn't? *dismissive wank gesture* Best track: Vibraphonissimo
Fun for a moment.
Ihan kuin olis elokuvamusaa kuunnellut. Meni kerran läpi ja hetkittäin oikein viihdyttävästi. Samutti janon. 2,49
Romanttisen illallisen äärellä ravintolan taustamusiikkina tosi jepa. Autossa ja töiden äärellä laimee kakkonen
Eh
its a live orchestra concert 2.5
• I mean it was tango👍🏼 • There were some bits that I quite enjoyed but honestly it was a chore getting through this album • I would not listen to this album again • Favourite song: Operation Tango
You know when you've been Tango'd
My excitement turned to despair by the end of the third track. It all sounded very similar to me and I became worried that my nights would never turn back to day. Worried that the chill I began to feel would leave me colder and ill. By the fifth track, I was convinced I would never love again, that the food I'd eat would be tasteless and soft. And, by the end of the album, I was no longer albe to get out of bed or feel my legs. And when I opened my eyes it was true... Somehow I have been transported into a stop action Tim Burton movie and am unable to escape. This is my letter in a bottle... send help..... SOS. SOS. SOS.
Probably deserves to be on the list, but it’s not my thing. It was inoffensive until the end of Operation Tango and most of La Muerta del Angel.
2.5
100% percusión e instrumentos. Para aficionados a este tipo. Totalmente prescindible. No me ha aportado nada.
Not my cup of tea
I listened to this on earphones and sometimes it felt like the xylaphone was inside my head, like as if it ran between my two ears and I could feel inside my head someone playing it. A weird feeling but not unpleasant.
I had high hopes for this one, but it's... mediocre at best. It sounds more like the soundtrack to a Wallace & Gromit short than an album by a storied composer.
What they’re doing is awesome and I get why it’s on the list but all instrumental albums aren’t for me 2/5
Well, that was rather niche. Hands down the best live bandoneon tango jazz album I've ever heard. Much of it sounded as if the band were accompanying a silent movie. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Nuevo Tango Date listened: 12/04/23
The New Tango is like a score from a film I've never seen and don't care to. It's in the very average but no thanks bucket, 2.
A bandoneon and vibraphone supergroup - AT LAST! To be fair, the collaboration was probably inevitable, because after all… it takes two to tango. There were some good vibes here and there but the band did go on and on a bit.
Strange album to me. Another live proof man e that I would certainly like more to see. Felt like a horror movie in some circus with killer maniacal clowns.
Stressful music, not my style.
Respect the talent but not for me.
yeah i dunno
The percussionists got their day in the melodic sun. 2/5
While it's is a nice sound, this isn't anything particularly ground-breaking. It is fine, and a more modern piece of Tango music, but it doesn't seem to be inventive, or particularly memorable.
What if the theme from Sex and the City sounded like an hour-long panic attack? On a serious note, there are a lot of great non-us, non-uk (I.e. “world music”) albums on this list, but just as many chintzy, late-career albums which clearly crossed over in the 80s - 90s, when the writer of the og book was coming of age. The instruments sound too crisp and synth-y, and everything is arranged with such a lack of mess. You can’t help but feel like this album was played and/or bought in a Starbucks.
I generally love jazz, but the combination of instruments did not work well for me. Strings, accordion, and vibraphone? Sounds like they were trying to prove a point that it could be done. On top of this, they repeated the same phrases many times, which worked well occasionally. I did like some songs, though, like little Italy and Laura’s Dream. Border btwn two and three star.
Didn't really move me in any way.
Amazing musicianship, but not really my thing.
I was really bored by this tango nuevo album. Too much nuevo, not enough tango. This is overly intellectual jazz for me. The constantly swooping violin was annoying. And I am unconvinced that marimba really helps. So, after a while listening, I thought, this really reminds me of the theme to the Terry Gilliam film "12 Monkeys" (1995), that I always enjoyed. And sure enough Suite Punta Del Este by Astor Piazolla. But that piece is not performed on this album. Plus, he wrote the classic Libertango, adapted with lyrics by Grace Jones as"I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)", a really fantastic song. But also, not on this album. And apparently he wrote an amazing piece in memory of his father, "Adios Nonino", that is a classic of the tango genre. Not on this album. So, this album seems like a weird choice on the list. It's an atypical performance by a classic composer and innovator within his genre that doesn't contain many of his most famous and genre-defining compositions. But check out the wild life on Astor Piazolla. his wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astor_Piazzolla) is a fascinating read. Some highlights: - "Gardel invited the young bandoneon player [Piazolla] to join him on his tour. Much to Piazzolla's dismay, his father decided that he was not old enough [he was only 14] to go along. The disappointment of being forbidden to join the tour proved to be fortunate, as it was on this tour in 1935 that Gardel and his entire orchestra perished in a plane crash" - "Having disbanded his first orchestra in 1950 he almost abandoned tango altogether as he continued to study Bartok and Stravinsky and orchestra direction" - "[After a classical concert in 1953] At the end of the concert, a fight broke out among members of the audience who were offended by the inclusion of two bandoneons in a traditional symphony orchestra." - "Piazzolla's new approach to the tango, nuevo tango, made him a controversial figure in his native land both musically and politically." A politically controversial tango composer! - He collapsed in 1990, and spent the last two years of his life in a coma. - There is an airport in Argentina named after him. I would totally watch a movie about the life of Astor Piazolla. And I was pleasantly surprised to find out I was familiar with a few pieces of his work. But this album was not enjoyable for me, and I never intend to listen to it again. A missed opportunity by 1001 albums to select a properly representative work.
Just not for me
Gets really repetitive really fast, but Nuevo Tango is worth a listen
An album that I can certainly appreciate, but not necessarily enjoy as much as I'd like to. Music like this is meant to be listened to live, as a full experience. On it's own it veers closer towards background music - it sounds very interesting sure, but it's background music nonetheless.
Ah not my thing, I bet this is groundbreaking if you like classical music and whatnot but I just didn't vibe with it. Too disjointed for me. Saved tracks: Little Italy
Not my cup of tea
Plinkety plonk. Not really for me.
I imagine if you were present at the time of recording - you would marvel at the talent of these two extraordinary musicians. The dramatic scale of tension from one track to the next would create an atmosphere unparalleled to anything seen from a duo before. Listening to the applause between tracks they really did enjoy it. For me though, as someone listening at home, I found this album a little trippy. Like I was in some kind of nightmare. I'd said yes to another pint of 8.2% scrumpy cider when really I should have been sensible and told the gang I was going home. Who knows, maybe that's what they were going for? And if it was - well done to them. At least I know where to go if I feel like an anxiety attack. I won't be listening to this anytime soon, but really appreciate having something different come my way.
Didn’t interest me. It’s not a patch on Stephane Grapelli and the Hot Club.
boring
A pretty upbeat and entertaining classical style album that I guess is a twist on tango. Overall it was easy to listen to and I enjoyed it but I don’t think I’ll revisit this one much. 4.1/10
I have been transported back to an off-strip Las Vegas lounge circa 1963. I don't care for it.
There is such a things as too much xylophone
A little too much vibraphone for me. I think I'd enjoy it more sitting in a jazz tango bar in Buenos Aires.
Delivered what it promised. Not but thing but liked the vibe. Something different.
