Did not realize this was the daughter of João Gilberto. It’s very pleasant in a way. I could see it being nice evening background music. Hard to form an opinion without a close listen. I’m not as familiar with her father’s work but expect that some of his music (maybe with Getz) will be on this list. From what I remember his/their music is more innovative and has a little bit more spark. Of course it was a different time and is not a fair comparison for his daughter. The music was fine but ultimately not for me, and not something I’ll come back to.

Great voice. Great instrumentals. Just lovely. Would love to listen at a cocktail party or while making dinner. Answering emails at work was also made more pleasant with this in the background.
I really should get back to trying to listen to all of these albums on headphones. Hearing stuff like this is why I'm here.

Tanto Tempo is an album that's just that one thing that you put in the background while doing something else, more so than many other albums. I have never known too much about this woman other than the fact that she did work on some of the Rio soundtrack and she is also the daughter of Joao Gilberto who has worked on some other albums on this list. As for the music itself, it is just background music to me. I will say that the addition of some downtempo elements on this album is certainly interesting but i don't think it elevates this album over the top. Bebel's singing is quite nice though and adds something to this album but nothing that makes me rate this album higher than 3 stars. Best Song: Lonely Worst Song: August Day Song
Goddamn, I loved pretty much every second of this.
Pleasant enough to listen to, but everything pretty much started to sound the same to me after 2 songs.
Perfect example of a late night album
No private session used in Spotify. Mellow, chill, didn't evoke images of the beach but rather hanging out in some cocktail bar listening to live music. I can dig it.

i’ve been waiting to get a (lyrical) non-english album. this is exactly what i needed. it felt so 2000; sounding just a little grainy and nostalgic, even though i’ve never listened to this artist before.
I wish I spoke Portuguese - it would be amazing to know what Bebel is singing about, and to be able to appreciate the music far more. Despite being able to understand very little of this, I feel extremely safe in my judgement that every part of this is "good" at the very least. On top of that, there's some tracks which absolutely stirred _feelings_ inside me - feelings I didn't expect coming into this. I certainly didn't see it coming that an album with so few words I could comprehend would leave me feeling such intense emotion. I honestly think that _Close your Eyes_ single handedly pulled this experience from "good" to "great".
First listen. Listening to August Day Song on an August day; peak music exploration. This album is alright. I generally like bossa nova but some of this production is just not my style. It’s a bit subtle and a bit boring. Gilberto’s vocals can lean towards the dull side of things. Highlights - Samba Amor, Lowlights - the monotony of the vocals.

Mellow, I heard seen this album before so it was nice to connect the dots. Not my genre gave it my best but I think a 3 would be too generous.
I am not at all qualified to give a good review for this album, since I lack the knowledge on this genre. But overall it is a gentle, nice sounding album. It feels however a bit too monotonous for my liking. Thought about giving it two stars, but the hot summer day here seems to fit the album vibe, bumping it up a bit. 3/5

It's smooth, tasteful, breezy, elegant... I mean, if you're looking to get your bossa nova on, then it's hard to fault this. I don't know the genre well enough to know why this particular record ws deemed worthy of being on the list. I only know some of the major releases from the 60s. I definitely prefer that stuff as it has slightly more edge to it (if you can even call it that with something as smooth as bossa nova.), but whatever. Sometimes I get a little nit-picky. this is a 4.
Absolutely perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon in my kitchen.
Decent samba album and really easy to listen to. What threw me off is how much older it sounds than it actually is. This came out only 26 years ago, but sonically it feels like something that could’ve been released 50 years ago and nobody would question it. “August Day Song” was catchy, and “Bananeira” was probably the most fun track on the album. It’s upbeat, has a really good bass line, and was one of the few songs that made me pay a little more attention instead of just letting the album play in the background. Nothing here bothered me, but nothing really pushed it beyond pleasant either.
Perfectly fine Bossa Nova, pretty inoffensive but nothing to write home about either. She has a nice voice but doesn't do too much with it.

Tedious, dull.
I was hopeful of finding a new winner for me. I’m certainly capable of falling for the charms of some good Bossa Nova and this had the added bonus of being modernised with some electronica. How did I miss this at the time? She’s even a Gilberto for heaven’s sake! I would imagine that I could get into this more, but unfortunately, I don’t feel a high probability that I will be returning to it. It’s not the fault of the album itself that my expectations were perhaps too heightened simply by the prospect of the electronica update. I found that element far too subtle. It could have been at least doubled in its intensity and would still have been just a texture. No, although I found that disappointing, the album could still have maintained my attention and affection, had it grasped me in other ways. The vocals are undeniably smooth and effortlessly melodic, but even that wasn’t enough. I wanted this to be more than just the perfect background music but ultimately the vibe is just that. I remember writing a positive review of Getz/Gilberto near the beginning of my 1001 journey and I think the difference is about feeling. The 60s version was dripping with a tactility of melancholy, this seemed sterile by comparison. At a swim-up bar overlooking the Mediterranean fine, but probably not at home for me again.
I listened to this album as I slowly drove my now-fragile car to the grocery store and back, shopping for various members of the household. An air of myth surrounded this album for me: back when I listened to São Paulo Confessions, I learned that Suba produced this album as well, having died in a studio fire saving the recordings of this album. I enjoyed Suba's album quite a bit, so part of me had built up an anticipation around this album which was likely unfair in hindsight. While this album is certainly missing some of the unique experimentation of Suba's solo album, it makes up for that with sheer beauty. This album sounds like the morning after it rains, in a way that reminds me of other artists like Kali Uchis. I can hear the little intricacies and details of Suba's production, with occasaional electronic glitches and drums emerging from this soundscape of light Spanish jazz. I was also pleasantly caught off-guard by the handful of English lyrical moments which cropped up across the album, giving me a few moments where I could latch onto the vibe of this album even more explicitly. This list has slowly been helping me realize that I'm apparently a pretty big fan of samba, and this album is a particularly gorgeous vibe. Highlights: Samba De Benção, August Day Song, Mais Feliz, So Nice (Summer Samba), Samba E Amor

Perfect. A strange marriage of futurism and bossa nova that Bebel's voice binds together as if the two were always meant to go hand in hand.
I can't really get much out of this that I haven't gotten out of any other Bossa Nova album on this list. It's good, though. Production is nice and clean.

I quite enjoyed this very gentle modernization of the old bossa nova sound. Why am I not listening to this while sweating my ass off on a beach somewhere, sipping from an extremely alcoholic fruity cocktail? I'm sitting at my desk doing work like a big dumb idiot.

7/10. Buen disco de bossa medio jazz con combinación de otros estilos. Esperaba algo así siendo Bebel siendo la hija de Joao Gilberto, y realmente no me decepcionó. Su voz es muy linda y armónica, plus el brasilero es muy lindo idioma para los cantos, y la música es correcta. Lo volvería a escuchar.

Tanto Tempo by Bebel Gilberto is a pleasant, easy-going listen that I'd describe as a blend of samba, bossa nova and jazz with a few modern electronic touches thrown in. The standout feature of the album is Bebel Gilberto's voice. It's warm, smooth and effortlessly relaxing, perfectly suited to the laid-back style of the music. This is the sort of album you can happily have playing in the background on a summer afternoon without it ever becoming intrusive. For me, though, that's also its biggest weakness. While it's undeniably pleasant, there just isn't enough happening to really hold my attention. Every now and then the album introduces some electronic loops, subtle synths and more contemporary production, and those moments are genuinely interesting. I just wish there had been more of them, because they add a freshness that much of the album lacks. Instead, I found much of the record to be fairly standard samba and bossa nova. It's easy to listen to and never unpleasant, but it rarely surprises or excites. By the end, I was left wondering why this particular album was chosen for the challenge, as it didn't feel especially distinctive or groundbreaking. Favourite tracks: "Close Your Eyes" and "So Nice" were both enjoyable and among the album's highlights. Least favourite tracks: There isn't anything I actively disliked. The problem is more that too many songs drift by without leaving much of an impression. Album artwork: A classic album cover that perfectly suits the relaxed feel of the music.
Look I will always turn up for some bossa nova. This album doesn't reinvent the wheel or anything, and it's not especially varied across its length, but unlike some other albums I've criticized more heavily for that, bossa nova is just a genre I overall like more, so this is still worth an easy 7/10.
Beautiful album! I loved her voice, the variety of instruments mixed with electronic elements, and how it all blended together to make a really lovely sound. Will probably visit this again very soon in the future.
A downtempo bossa nova album with electronic elements had all the makings of an instant classic for me, but frustratingly it only reaches those heights on a handful of tracks. It's a very enjoyable listen regardless, but songs like Alguém and Lonely give a peek into what could've been, had the whole album leaned further into that more adventurous, almost trip-hoppy sound. Standouts: Samba da Benção • Alguém • Tanto Tempo • Lonely • Bananeira • Close Your Eyes
Sadly, this didn't do a whole lot for me. Very much like background music. I'm a little sad because Getz/Gilberto was my first 5/5 but I think the trumpet and instrumentals were doing a lot of heavy lifting. This album is very heavily centered around her voice, which I did not feel was interesting enough to carry the whole thing. Not something I would get much enjoyment out of listening to closely.

Yay, I've got a great album with quite a few hits. Just because Gilberto has notable parents, it doesn't mean she's a "nepo baby". A nepo baby, by my definition, is a talentless person who's only successful just because they have famous family members (Bebel Gilberto does not meet this definition). "Close Your Eyes" has to be the only bad song, as it's a departure from the rest of "Tanto Tempo". I believe "Close Your Eyes" should've been the bonus track instead of "No Return". 4 stars for "Tanto Tempo".

The Bad: Fucking BosaNova from the 2000s… thought they outlawed it in 1990… The Ugly: BosaNova… or however you are supposed to spell it… I think I had seen the album cover pop up while looking at other people’s lists… and I just can’t recall now if most of them were ranking the album low, but I guess they were… I know that I will… Poor woman. Not her fault that she was just decades too late… lovely childhood she had, by the by, with all those great artists just dropping by to work with her dad… and what an artist he was! Anyway, I listed other the album and now I can die… oh no, I can’t … because I still have roughly another 300 potential shit albums to listen to… 2*

I am not a great judge of this as bossa nova is not an area I am strong in. It feels very classic for an album from the turn of the century. The song Close Your Eyes spoke directly to me, most because it was one of three songs in English. Even the rest of it, what my rudimentary Spanish didn’t get the tone and feel of the music supplemented. I thought the song Tanto Tempo was an interesting play on Girl from Impanema. August Day Song was dreamy. I probably won’t come back to this, not because it was bad but it wasn’t a normal go-to genre.
Random thoughts: * chill bossa nova vibes with a little modern touch. * being a Gilberto must be like musical royalty in Brazil. * this music is just so chill, it is kinda of hard to pick out a single song. Which is both good and bad. * this shall be thrown on for chill vibes some evening.

Pleasant Bossa Nova album but nothing really stood out to make me really love this. For me its background music that doesn't distract from whatever else I'm doing - not sure why it's one of the 1001 that I had to hear, who knows, I might have without noticing.

Cool vibe and I LOVED Bananeira. Most of the songs did nothing for me though. There’s something so eerie about a singer singing in Portuguese and then suddenly switching to English for a minute. It’s like if you were watching a movie and suddenly the character looked straight at you and said your name.

I'm so happy to find this album here. It might not be an essential album, but it's long been present in my life. Nothing new, slightly modernized production with old-school sounding intrumentation and sample based flows. It fit perfectly with the downtempo vibes I was into in the early 00's. Half of the album is excelent, the other half is less memorable, but I'd still highly recommend it as a contemporary work of boss/samba/triphoppy music.

A “new take” on classic songs. Do the electronic beats add anything to the music that was wanting? No, but they don’t detract from the beautifully sultry vocals on these great songs, either.

The twenty year old me would get a rash from this. The 55 year old me, on the other hand, mixes a piña colada, throws himself in the hammock and just enjoys life.
Curious album to listen to while mowing the lawn. But it's solid. She definitely has a beautiful and soothing voice.
Really nice
A very bright bossa nova album that goes well with a sunny day. This seems to have a mix of live and programmed instruments, which makes sense. The guitars and horns are light and airy, while the percussion is heavier and more repetitive. Most songs are pretty empty, letting Gilberto take center stage. Her vocals are great but not amazing. An exception to the empty songs is "Close Your Eyes," which is lush and builds to one of the few climaxes on the album. As peaceful as listening to this is, the album could use more moments like that to keep your interest. The drums also bring this down a bit, as they sound like standard downtempo percussion and would benefit from more variety. A pleasant listen, but not a very substantial one.
As a super casual fan of bossa nova, this was even better and more interesting than I was expecting. Big fan of this.

A very nice album for background listening. Calming, soothing. Not distracting. Not engaging enough for focused listening, but that's probably not its purpose.
I really do get it, but this style of music just isn't for me. Was just never inspired to listen to this, even though I had the whole weekend.
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is a bossa nova album. It was a perfectly fine and pleasant listen, but don't see myself coming back to it.

Enjoyed the experience, and I really liked Samba Da Bencao which starts the ride. Too much of the rest faded into the background for me and I didn't love the tracks that most mixed in modern music components.
I won't always be in the mood for this, but for the times when I will be, it's perfect.

I imagine this is what people who browse glossy art mags sit around and listen to in their galleries, which probably isn't true, but your sorta get the idea. That's an aspirational thing for me, even though working in an art gallery sounds super boring.

Cool album. I was familiar with the first song, and really like it. Never listened to any of her albums. I don't know that it's an amazing album, but it's very good, and I'm glad I was directed to listen to it.
Astrud Gilberto... oh boy. Her music relaxed me. Helped me regain a connection to my body, to wherever I was. Which was often in my dorm room in the Arts House, at Tufts. I came across her recordings in the stacks at WMFO, where I had the privilege of being a DJ for a semester, alongside lifetime friend Daniel, who has been a DJ since those early days, in NYC. Astrud's music was a little kawaii, a little funky, a little smoky. I listened to her contemporary, composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, much more regularly... the bossa nova they shared felt like a vision of adulthood that was strong, supple, and pleasurable. A vision I liked much better than the cheese of the Tijuana Brass Band (one of my parents' 25 record albums at home). Bebel has a beautiful voice, and I'm grateful to her for keeping the musical tradition of her parents alive on this record. I'm giving it a 5 for my relation to that tradition.
Super chill
Not my genre but very, very enjoyable. I would absolutely listen again, probably more as background to some activity than sitting and actively listening. But that's probably more because I lack the faculties to properly appreciate everything. Mostly just enjoying the grooviness.

Tanto Tempo is an excellent choice for this list. It's something I'd never go near of my own free will, but getting exposed to it through this project makes me happy that I even started doing this. Bossa nova, I was not familiar with your game. If it was just the singing, I'd probably not enjoy it as much, but the guitar and drum work along with this album's electronic twist is really cool unique sound I haven't really heard anywhere else. The electronic backing track on the first song of the album, "Samba da Benção" is such a cool sound I could listen to forever. I want moreeeee. More of that, please. Gilberto has a great voice too, so obviously that's the focus of the album. It's soft but powerful and smooth. All the parts of the whole come together really nicely. The beats overlaid with the melodies are pleasant to listen to. Overall, the album is a little loungy but I really liked a lot of it and enjoyed my listen (and would happily listen to more). It's a 4/5 for me.

This was an enjoyable listen. A definite mood changer that has its place. The modern production of using loops and soundscape feels compliments the songs and is used so minimally it doesn’t take away from the overall vibe. And who doesn’t need some progressive bossa nova to help samba up their summertime. I might even pull this out at my next cocktail party to add points to my sophistication card.

One of the most soothing, seductive collections of samba. Wonderful.
Its relaxing and soft wich is good. Its a nice nigth listen. But its not something I would go out of my way to listen to again. There are better and much more interesting albums that sounds like this.

A really fun and interesting album. I quite enjoyed this one. I think I saved maybe half of the songs from this album to my playlist. It has a nice varied sound within the album, and has a nice, light touch with the instruments when supporting the singing. Great voice too. 4.5/5 stars.

A chillout, pleasant and soothing bossa nova album that mixes acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Singer has a relaxed voice. It’s a nice listen, but also nothing that really pops to me at stand out or super memorable. But it’s a good end of the night album for a glass of wine or decaf espresso to cap off the night and relax.

BRAZIL MENTIONED I confess I had never listen to anything from the daughter of the legendary João Gilberto, so I was taken by surprise. I read someone's comment saying "is this progressive samba?" and I simply couldn't find a better term. 5 stars.

It's more of a jazz-lite experience, as the actual electronic stuff was pushed to the background. It was fine but nothing I'd even return to. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Unfortunately they all kind of sounded the same so I guess the whole album?
In her 2000 album Tanto Tempo, Brazilian-American artist Bebel Gilberto delivers a solid, lounge-friendly record that leans heavily on atmosphere, even if it occasionally struggles to maintain its momentum. Listening strictly by "vibes" due to the language barrier, the album shines brightest when it embraces its organic roots and slow-burn grooves—the jazzy, dreamlike tension of the opener and the gorgeous, soulful warmth of the fifth track ("Mais Feliz") are easily the record's high points. While the highly anticipated title track strangely lacks the punch expected of a centerpiece, the second half recovers nicely by seamlessly weaving together cozy coffee-shop lo-fi, boutique wine-shop sambas, and a late-album emotional dive into isolation. Ending on an energetic, danceable high note with infectious salsa rhythms, it ultimately balances out to a respectable 3/5 listening experience—an incredibly decent, sun-drenched record that proves good production and strong instrumentation can easily transcend a language barrier.

Anyway this album was pleasant enough to listen to, but nothing special, the three tracks sung in English felt less authentic then the ones in her native tongue so the worst track for me could have been any of them but I’ll say track 2 was the weakest of those three. I can’t be bothered by o go find the title on YouTube again. The best track was one which felt like she kept saying my name and that was in ‘mais feliz’ Overall just a nice pleasant middle of the road album 5.5/10
Bevel Gilberto Not my genre and, having listened to this, never gonna be. So to some people could be the greatest album of all time. But to me, it's a great cure for insomnia. Best Track - Close Your Eyes (finally woke me up a bit) Worst Track - Mais Feliz 3/10 as it must mean something to someone

This is one of those albums on this list that is somewhat confounding. It's a good album, a fine effort. But for me it does nothing. I'm quite open to new music. But ... I got nothing.

Not my vibe
The musical equivalent to a washing machine
Never knowingly listened to bossa nova before. I recognised the style — that gentle, warm, rhythmic thing — but didn't have a name for it. Two songs in I already loved it. Tanto Tempo is the perfect warm evening album. Garden, beach, someone you'd like to spend time with. Romantic without being sentimental, calm without being boring. Bebel Gilberto's voice sits exactly where it needs to — unhurried, close, like it's not trying to impress anyone. It turns out bossa nova is Portuguese. Brazilian Portuguese. I didn't know that either. Everything about this album felt like a small discovery. 4.5/5 — filed under 5. New favourite genre.
So. Relaxing. Soothing music that can be consumated as background listening but contains enough details and twists in the arrangements that active listening doesn't bore either. Also, lovely voice in a language I barely hear. Not all of the tracks work the charm in the same way though. All in all: 3/5 - good
Gilberto has a nice voice but the music is very boring to me. I guess my streak of being pleasantly surprised by the jazz albums on this list had to end eventually
I definitely recognize the first track from restaurant or department store playlists around that time. It's nice enough. I like Bossa Nova, I find it very soothing, but I'd prefer just to listen to stuff from the 60's... like her dad and her step mom. A ton of that 60's stuff was immaculately recorded and really holds up. The electronic elements, for the most part, were not interesting enough to make it a new update to the 60's sound or a fusion like say Thievery Corp. 2.5/5 stars - I won't listen to it again and don't think it should be on this list but rounding up to 3 because I didn't really dislike any of it. I added Bananeira to my 1001 playlist. That tune stands out to me because it's got that 90s-2000s Acid Jazz sound mixed in.

Latin rythyms, portuguese language, acoustic guitar. It's fine, but I don't know why I should be particularly impressed. There must be a context I'm missing. Bananeira is really nice, catchy, relaxed. Best track - Summer Samba, Bananeira, Close Your Eyes 3 stars - but Bananeira nearly brings it up on its own!

I really liked this album. I'm not a bossa nova fan, but the electronic aspects made it something that is more appealing to my tastes. It feels a bit like "coffee shop" music, but it makes me think of chill Japanese bars or coffee shops where DJ's play lo-fi beats and stuff like this. I will definitely listen to this again.

Don’t think I would go back and listen to this again, but some of the songs did have a nice sound and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Recently discovered the record Getz/Gilberto and just learned she is Joao Gilberto's daughter. Very cool! A lovely bossa nova record. I am partial to this vibe for ambience. I'm more likely to put this on in its entirety then, say, Beck's Odelay or The Beastie Boy's Ill Communication, though those album's may have higher highs. Altogether a really great discovery for me!

Actually enjoying this more than I thought I would. A phrase I've learned from this project is "kitchen music." Pleasant music that's really just relegated for cooking in the kitchen and having some music on...either by yourself or with friends and family around. Black Sabbath is not kitchen music. Metallica is not kitchen music and neither is Van Halen. But this is prime kitchen music....and I'm not sure if I'd ever come back to this or not and actually play it in the kitchen as my kitchen music catalog has tripled in size since starting this project. There's a lot to pick from. So...I'm giving this a 4. 3 for the music itself, I respect it a lot and enjoyed some of it and 1 more for the producer who saved the recordings from his studio being on fire and then died from smoke inhalation a few days later. I've seen reviews saying that "this music isn't worth dying over" which...that's the thing about art. People end relationships for it, go bankrupt over it, obsess over it...even die for it, because they feel that passionate about it. And someone else can come along and say "this sucks and wasn't worth it." But to that guy, it was. We should all feel so strongly about something we create. What a gift.
This samba is a little shiny for me. Also, I prefer when she sticks to Portuguese. Respectfully, of course.

It's fine lounge music. I don't mind that I can't understand most songs. Bebel's voice is fine, but not superlative. It's fine for lounge music, but not much beyond that. Not something I would seek out as requiring my attention. I feel like there was a period in the mid-late '90s that made lounge music more mainstream, and this album feels like its at the tail end of that. Nothing standout, but serviceable for the time.

There was a lot of cool and interesting sounds on some of these tracks but I wasnt a huge fan of the vocal performances.
There are some strange choices on this list, but picking an album from the niece of Chico Buarque while simultaneously failing to include a single Chico Buarque album has to be the strangest of them all. Genuinely absurd, Construção in particular is easily one of the greatest albums I've ever heard and it's nowhere to be seen here. I live as far as possible from Brazil and even I am stupefied. It's like picking Jakob Dylan's The Wallflowers over Bob Dylan. Anyway, I get why this album was picked, it's a fresher and more modern take on bossa nova with its little electronic touches and lounge elements, but overall it's an unimpactful, inoffensive set of renditions that won't stick around in your memory for very long, other than a couple of great tracks.

This had great instrumentation and production. Like right off the bat that’s the biggest thing that I take away from this album. It’s also beautiful and bright! I obviously have no idea what the lyrics are so I can’t relate to the album on that level but I really loved how pleasant and wholesome this album was. And musically it’s very diverse and creative. Super fun album.

A beautiful voice singing bossa-nova with some updated sounds. It’s really good. I think people don’t actually listen to the whole album but they would find that at some points she sings in English also and not just Portuguese. I really enjoyed the album. I am also glad the guy saved the record. It’s sad that he died while doing it.
This is okay for fancy restaurant patio music, but as an album, it just fades away eventually. I can't explain it much better than that. Favorite Track: "August Day Song".

5/10 Daughter of bossa nova legend João, Bebel Gilberto’s Tanto Tempo is her first album to receive a worldwide release and saw her collaborating with Serbian producer Suba, who was killed rescuing the masters of this record from a fire at his studio. There’s also work here from Amon Tobin, sampled across the opening track, which was certainly enough to pique my interest. What that results in, to my ears, is a bossa nova take on the nu-jazz sound that was bubbling along in Europe at around this time. As I mention in my track by track breakdown, there are elements in here of St Germain, Cinematic Orchestra and the like, but this is very much on the restrained end of that scale. There are bits and pieces that pick up the groove here and there, but for the most part, this is an album that floats slightly aimlessly, rather than driving forward with any particular intent. It’s the kind of music that you’d enjoy in a cafe, but not bother shazamming, because it doesn’t capture your attention enough to make you want to take it home with you. And after 40 odd minutes, it does become rather repetitive too, which doesn’t necessarily help it. Bebel has a really nice voice, slightly smoky and sultry, but controlled and well balanced, particularly in the sections where she double tracks and adds some harmony and variation to things. The musicians are also very competent without being showy, and everything serves that incredibly gentle cafe vibe really well. Unfortunately, the fact is that while it’s pleasant enough, there was nothing that really stood out to me or stuck with me, even after 3-4 spins through. It’s the kind of music that I’d happily have on in the background, but never fully engage with. Nice, well executed, but a little dull. Samba Da Benção - A really nice, if not vastly interesting start. It has the feeling of a bossanova take on the downtempo cafe jazz electronica that was around at the turn of the millennium like St Germain, Cinematic Orchestra and Zero 7. The backing track to this track is, in fact, the track Nova by Amon Tobin. I enjoyed some of the nuance to the programming in the backing, and the general drifting vibe of the track was good, but not exactly gripping. August Day Song - The shuffling groove here is pretty cool. The playing is subtle but well performed across the board and the dual vocals are a nice feature of the track. It’s quite repetitive though and while it’s a pleasant enough piece to listen to, it does feel a little bit directionless, particularly towards the end where it kind of just repeats and repeats as it drifts away. Tanto Tempo - Another lilting, jazzy number. It feels a little more purposeful in its direction but still has a cool, lazy-day ambience to it. More deft and subtle work, particularly from Bebel herself in the vocal, but she weaves nicely around the piano work too. More pleasant stuff. Sem Contenção - Ah, this has got a bit more get up and go to it. There’s a bit more range between the different sections of the track and the groove pulls it along nicely. The vocal harmonies are pretty too. From a sound palette point of view, the album remains pretty consistent, but it’s nice to get a bit of tempo variation thrown in here. Mais Feliz - This is a bit more meandering. It feels a bit more stilted and not as smooth and subtle as other tracks and I’m felling a bit less engaged and swept into the vibe. It’s just a little bit bland and less rhythmically focused, I think. Alguém - Back to something more overtly electronic in the beat here. It’s another slightly aimless drifter of a song. Nothing particularly bad about it, but a little too repetitive and lacking in much of a hook to centre it around. Even the piano playing sort of floats around, rather than having any clear intent behind it. So Nice (Summer Samba) - As the title suggests, this is pretty nice. It’s got a bit more melodic focus to it and a cool, jazzy air to the playing and production. That being said it all feels a little generic and there’s nothing that would make this particularly stand out among a playlist of similar music. It sounds a bit like the incidental music played in a film when someone’s daydreaming about an idealistic future. Lonely - Another nice but slightly dull and repetitive nu-jazz electronica number. It’s entirely pleasant, but also entirely forgettable and quite blandly repetitive. Bananeira - This one picks up a bit more of an up-tempo groove to it, which helps to pull the record out of a bit of a lull. There are some nice vocal melodies backed up by some flavour from the horns. Vocally, it’s still a tad repetitive, but the groove helps to carry it a bit more successfully than the tracks that just float along. There are some great bits of playing from the band in places here too. Samba E Amor - More lovely singing, more fairly repetitive and unmemorable melodic work. It’s very sparse and tonally very pretty, but it just doesn’t really have anything there for me to grab on to. Close Your Eyes - And we close out with something that has a bit more pace to it, but doesn’t thematically feel like it really belongs with the rest of the record. It’s kind of an odd inclusion, because it feels so out of place, as an track that leans more towards a big band samba sound, but with production that somehow reigns in the extremity of the drive. Again, it’s a tad on the repetitive side and there’s nothing vastly memorable about it.
I was surprised by this one. Bebel does a great job at bringing samba music into the 21st century. "August Day Song" was the highlight for me because it almost sounds like a dream pop song. Favorite track: August Day Song 3.5/5
The agony continues, 450 in and worn out from 75% of these albums not being worthy of the Top 1001 title. It was surprising to learn this was a 2000 release, it sounds very dated. The album is kinda nice, a little bit like a Spanish Sade or something. Sultry but boring as hell. The switch between Spanish and English got old fast. It has good listener counts with no song under 1M listens. The two 'hits', "Samba Da Decao" (26M) and "So Nice (Summer Samba)" (16M) didn't stand out from the other songs in any discernible way. I just found this so boring and her vocals are just better than average. 2 stars

Good enough, kinda dragged on and wasn't too ear-catching, but twas fine.
I have begun to observe that the floor and ceiling of my appreciation of Bossa Nova are pretty similar. In short, I have been getting a similar amount of enjoyment from most everything I've heard from the genre. And it's a little frustrating, because I can tell there is real depth to the genre, but I also struggle to shake the "easy listening" connotation the genre has in The U.S. And this isn't really an exception. Bebel Gilberto is a pleasant presence here, and Tanto Tempo is still as enjoyable as other Bossa albums I've heard. But I still think it's a bit same-y and more suited to background listening. Perhaps even a bit moreso than other Bossa albums I've heard. This has traded the jazz influence I'm more used to for a down-tempo aesthetic, and while Tanto Tempo stands out a little because of this, it also has a sleepier sound than most Bossa I've heard. Alguém and Lonely kind of end up in a unique place, but aside from that, there just aren't a lot of surprises here. As I said, the overall experience is pleasant, it just doesn't resonate all that much for me, and kind of falls in line with other Bossa albums I've reviewed.
