best album i’ve heard all year
Delightful rhythmic music to start to the day to. 9/10
Love it!
Vie, vie, vie vie.... FIVE! Maybe a little boring now, but I can't diminish the fact that this played on a continuous loop for about 3 months while in Maui and also finishing late night undergrad art projects... so good.
Wonderful. Enjoyable.
Chill, great, easy vibes

Beautiful soun bossa nova
Buenisimo
Loved this
One of my favorites so far, makes me want to go on vacation and eat at a different restaurant every night.
It's always a little exciting to get an artist I've never heard of on this list. The album cover really didn't give any clues what to expect either. I know nothing about this genre of music, so I don't know if this was revolutionary in some way. I also have no idea what most of the songs are about. I do know that it sounds absolutely gorgeous. I enjoyed kicking back on a lazy Sunday afternoon and just letting this wash over me.
pre: no idea who this is, and once again highlighting the 2000-2015ish range when I stopped trying new things Love it. I don't know if it's just Bossa Nova or what, but loved the Seu Jorge-esque guitar. Beautiful voice. Foreign language that's not too distracting. This is going into active work rotation for me (except for the last song, which is in English)
Dreamy bossa nova.
Album was relaxing and great
Smooth. The title track I repeated. I love the samba rhythm.
Outstanding. Felt like I was in an Arrested Development episode at some points, but how is that at all a bad thing? What a tremendous voice and songs overall. A complete delight!
A beautiful exponent of classic Brazilian bossa nova. Bebel’s haunting voice elevates the brilliant music of the time. Her singing in English made the style accessible globally too!
I could listen to this on a sunny lazy day :) and dance by myself and have a cute time
This is a great album. This is one of a handful on the list that I would actually say to someone else that they had to listen to before they die, and not even in a sinister way. 5/5
I think if this album came out today you would find it under a playlist called "Chill Bossa Nova Songs to Vibe to." Great for a slow day and melts your stress away, it makes me want to check out the genre more.
Right up my alley! Perfect music for doing dishes, hanging out after a long day of work, going for a walk/drive, relaxing before bed. This album does it all!
I was not expecting to like this because I read reviews saying it was like elevator music. Well if I heard this in an elevator, I would try to Shazam it right away so I could add this to my playlists!
Good!
She might be a nepo baby but she definitely has the same sauce as both of her parents. Some of the most soothing singing you’ve ever heard over some excellent chilled out and sultry bossa nova. Loved the first track and the whole album. Correction: Astrud is her stepmom but her actual mom is a singer too so I’m sure my first point is still accurate. I’m drunk so why not a 5
Her voice is so sweet, whether singing in Portuguese or English. Samba da Bencǎo is familiar as the Eat Pray Love film's serenade. But the simply beautiful August Day Song and the lively, upbeat Sem Contencao should not be overlooked on this gem of an album. It is a Bossa Nova classic that holds up 25 years post-release.
Man, Brazilians really just knew what the fuck was up back in the day. Not saying they don’t now, but either way. Bossa nova is simply one of gods greatest gifts to Earth. It fills my soul with an indescribable amount of joy. And when I saw this artist’s last name, I figured there was no way she couldn’t be related to João Gilberto. And fortunately she is. After listening to this album, it is clear that the father of Bossa nova passed down all of his genius and creativity to his daughter. Except she doesn’t just take her father’s success and make a subpar parody of it. She keeps all of the good parts of the genre, and enhances it with modernized electronic sounds. This album has a particular mysticism to it, due to the addition of a trip-hop inspired sound. And it’s executed perfectly. These two very different sounds are put together seamlessly. The only description I have for the way this album makes me feel is like happening to sit across from the most beautiful girl you’ve ever seen in your life on a train in Europe, Before Sunrise style. I myself have met people who are as beautiful as this music, but they are few and far between. This record just provided me with serenity and security. I feel everything is gonna be alright, and anything I’m having trouble putting past me now will fade into obscurity if I just put this on. And I totally believe it. An experience I think is worthwhile for everyone to have, whether they are familiar with this genre at all. Rating: 9/10
LOVED THISSSSS!!!!
She ate this so hard and she knows it

A delightful album, true to bossa nova with modern touches. I guess if your name is Gilberto, you are inclined to excellent musicianship.
If I had the capacity to reach that stage of enlightenment that enables you to direct your rebirth, I’d do it just to be have the short lived existence of a microbe in her mouth that gets to ride into oblivion on one of the soundwaves coming from her voice.
Beautiful voice, could listen forever. She has the same effortless smoothness as her stepmother, the legendary Astrud. This is the kind of music that makes the world a kinder, mellower place... I think the right word is "Blissful". You can just feel the sun shining 🌞
What an incredible discovery! Such a seductive voice and gorgeous music. Loved it so much that we booked tickets for her next show.
Very nice easy listening. I especially liked "August Day Song"
Bossa Nova always puts me in a good mood, and Bebel is a smooth as bossa gets.
This album is great! I definitely want to listen to it more in the future.
BBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Another album I've loved for over 20 years. Sing to me Bebel
LP
I enjoyed this Brazilian masterpiece.
This is right up my alley, and is such a great easy listening album. For being the daughter of João Gilberto, Bebel Gilberto did not disappoint. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
No doubt that this is a musical family. I’m huge bossa nova fan, but if you would have described a “bossa nova, drum machine, new age” album, I would have been skeptical. All of the elements blend together in a really tasteful way that shows considerable restraint for the time. A treat to listen to.
i have basically no bossa nova knowledge, but this album was really lovely! good vibes all the way through, really enjoyed the use of electronic music
Smooth as silk. Just want to sit back and let all parts of this flutter over me.
Absolutely incredible.
This album was really pretty and very relaxing. I loved it a lot more than I thought I would.
Sumptuous opening track. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Bossa Nova music style. And real music. If you like this just a littel bit, go listen to RED HOT +RIO (a compilation) or the all time classic album that will blow you away "Getz/Gilberto" . This album gives me hope for The List. ....which needs more variegation, World and more Varied (and female) voices, and less rancid rap, garage and punk. But hey, another time we can go down the allmusic ratings, or rolling stone lists, right? And this has been educative so far. Bebel. She was Eva in the film Rio, is a brazilian bossa nova figure, she is NOT descended from Astrid Gilberto, but IS descended from Brazilian guitarist / vocalist João Gilberto (Astrid's ex), and her mother was singer Miúcha. So, maybe we will hear the album "Getz/Gilberto" which has two of my all time favourite tracks. I'm off to Rio now....
Different language but really good chill Jazz
Well, this was a first for me in that there's a song on this album I couldn't find on Spotify nor YouTube. So for now I'll just have to skip it. That song is Alguem. There were a couple of covers on YouTube but I refuse to listen to those as I feel it takes away from what listening to this album should be. However, I can safely say I'll be seeking this out in physical form. This was a beautiful album. A beautiful mix of Bossa Nova, Future Jazz and Downtempo. Even felt a bit of DnB energy from Lonely. Fun, mostly upbeat and tuneful. I wish for a warmer day to review this, quite honestly. Favourite: Lonely
It is very interesting to hear this right after listening to her father. While that record had a staleness to it, this is much more reminiscent of Norah Jones and a soothing coffee shop type record. I liked.
I remember clearly when this album came out. As a fan of bossa nova and her father João Gilberto, I was definitely interested. I read reviews and planned to buy it...and evidently didn't. This was quite a lovely update of the bossa nova into a 21st century feel. It's wonderful to revisit such a great version of "Summer Samba," one of my all time favorite songs. It was quite perfect for a first walk outside on a sunny, crisp day after a long, cold winter. This was lush and lovely.
I can hear Rio’s beaches calling. I think that the listening experience was enhanced by the non-English language lyrics.
Absolutely enchanting. I was enchanted.
There’s noticeable Brazil representation on this list, and I’m for it! This is a lovely listen that was just perfect for my evening. There’s a lot of the classic bossa nova/samba sound with some modern twists nestled in there. It all works wonderfully.
lovely
the jazzy feel was much appreciated, and i love love love this person’s vocals!
Jazzy calm really good vibes. Kinda reminds me of the wild world sound track.
Loved it for chill background vibes. Frenchy cafe
My type of chill music 💯💯💯
Linda voz
Swag af trip-hop infused lounge sounds. Brb gonna blast this from my poolside cabana v
Love me some bossa nova. Such great stuff.
7/10… bossa nova / latin lounge / *2000
Really liked this. Absolutely not my go to sort of thing, but very mellow and chilled...
This album has a charming sound that belies its tragic backstory.
A “new take” on classic songs. Do the electronic beats add anything to the music that was wanting? No, but they don’t detract from the beautifully sultry vocals on these great songs, either.
Tips into schmaltz here and there, but also has shades of Sade over classic structures. Well outside my wheelhouse, a nice listen.
Really nice
As a super casual fan of bossa nova, this was even better and more interesting than I was expecting. Big fan of this.
a first listen. her voice is lovely. the instrumentation is nice too, if a bit understated on some tracks. definitely an enjoyable listen. favorite tracks: August Day Song, Bananeira, Close Your Eyes
This was really timed well with our heat wave, great in the sun. Made me feel like I was in Rio
Lovely
Cool album. I was familiar with the first song, and really like it. Never listened to any of her albums. I don't know that it's an amazing album, but it's very good, and I'm glad I was directed to listen to it.
Super chill
Not my genre but very, very enjoyable. I would absolutely listen again, probably more as background to some activity than sitting and actively listening. But that's probably more because I lack the faculties to properly appreciate everything. Mostly just enjoying the grooviness.
Great vibes. Backgrond music? Perhaps, but what's wrong with that? This is really good stuff.
Het meeste 3sterren album dat ik ooit 4 sterren heb gegeven, 4 sterren.
Tanto Tempo is an excellent choice for this list. It's something I'd never go near of my own free will, but getting exposed to it through this project makes me happy that I even started doing this. Bossa nova, I was not familiar with your game. If it was just the singing, I'd probably not enjoy it as much, but the guitar and drum work along with this album's electronic twist is really cool unique sound I haven't really heard anywhere else. The electronic backing track on the first song of the album, "Samba da Benção" is such a cool sound I could listen to forever. I want moreeeee. More of that, please. Gilberto has a great voice too, so obviously that's the focus of the album. It's soft but powerful and smooth. All the parts of the whole come together really nicely. The beats overlaid with the melodies are pleasant to listen to. Overall, the album is a little loungy but I really liked a lot of it and enjoyed my listen (and would happily listen to more). It's a 4/5 for me.
muito bom, o instrumental foi minha parte favorita
This was an enjoyable listen. A definite mood changer that has its place. The modern production of using loops and soundscape feels compliments the songs and is used so minimally it doesn’t take away from the overall vibe. And who doesn’t need some progressive bossa nova to help samba up their summertime. I might even pull this out at my next cocktail party to add points to my sophistication card.
I listened to four albums on a road trip and this was one that did not cause my son to vomit. 3.5/5
One of the most soothing, seductive collections of samba. Wonderful.
Brazilian jazz / lounge-vibe
Mega chill
a welcome respite from some of the hell i've experienced recently. she doesn't have the same touch as her father but it's enjoyable nonetheless Would I listen again: gladly Deserves to be on this list: probably 4.2
Dinner music. It’s nice but easily falls to the background for me. It fees strange to call an album ambiance, but it definitely has a warm vibe.
Muyy buenoo.
I really enjoyed this. Will be adding it to my regular rotation.
Love this combination of Jazz and Portuguese.. I think it sounds amazing 4/5
What a groovy and relaxing album… This is my first time listening to this genre of music. It's really pleasant.
I really liked this album. I'm not a bossa nova fan, but the electronic aspects made it something that is more appealing to my tastes. It feels a bit like "coffee shop" music, but it makes me think of chill Japanese bars or coffee shops where DJ's play lo-fi beats and stuff like this. I will definitely listen to this again.
Recently discovered the record Getz/Gilberto and just learned she is Joao Gilberto's daughter. Very cool! A lovely bossa nova record. I am partial to this vibe for ambience. I'm more likely to put this on in its entirety then, say, Beck's Odelay or The Beastie Boy's Ill Communication, though those album's may have higher highs. Altogether a really great discovery for me!
Instantly I recognized that Gilberto voice. Astrud must be related. I love some of the 90'z chill hop down tempo coffee shop vibe here. It's a 4.2 for me. Very good for night time chill vibes
divertido
There are a lot of better Samba albums out there. But it deserves a 4 simply because it made it to this list and the list would deserve so many better albums than are on it.
Good, and i like the style, but it makes me wish I was bilingual.
Actually enjoying this more than I thought I would. A phrase I've learned from this project is "kitchen music." Pleasant music that's really just relegated for cooking in the kitchen and having some music on...either by yourself or with friends and family around. Black Sabbath is not kitchen music. Metallica is not kitchen music and neither is Van Halen. But this is prime kitchen music....and I'm not sure if I'd ever come back to this or not and actually play it in the kitchen as my kitchen music catalog has tripled in size since starting this project. There's a lot to pick from. So...I'm giving this a 4. 3 for the music itself, I respect it a lot and enjoyed some of it and 1 more for the producer who saved the recordings from his studio being on fire and then died from smoke inhalation a few days later. I've seen reviews saying that "this music isn't worth dying over" which...that's the thing about art. People end relationships for it, go bankrupt over it, obsess over it...even die for it, because they feel that passionate about it. And someone else can come along and say "this sucks and wasn't worth it." But to that guy, it was. We should all feel so strongly about something we create. What a gift.
4 stars very enjoyable
perfect background music, love it
Highlights: Samba da Benção, August Day Song, Tanto Tempo, Alguém, So Nice (Summer Samba), Lonely, Bananeira, Close Your Eyes
A beautiful voice singing bossa-nova with some updated sounds. It’s really good. I think people don’t actually listen to the whole album but they would find that at some points she sings in English also and not just Portuguese. I really enjoyed the album. I am also glad the guy saved the record. It’s sad that he died while doing it.
Very smooth. I enjoyed it
My ears found this one very pleasant
An absolute pleasure to listen to. A lovely mix of soft stripped down Bossa Nova, and more upbeat and modern sounds.
I was surprised by this one. Bebel does a great job at bringing samba music into the 21st century. "August Day Song" was the highlight for me because it almost sounds like a dream pop song. Favorite track: August Day Song 3.5/5
Great tunes and talent thx !
Comfortable, soothing music. I would listen to this some other time.
What a beautiful voice! Carrying on the Bossa nova genius and legacy of her father. This is a delight. Gotta dig deeper into her catalog.
#331/1001. Out of the tens if not hundreds of great bossa nova artists Bebel Gilberto is the first one for me in this project, and although I willingly listen to her music, I still hope to catch also Dorís Monteiro, Elis Regina, Eliana Pittman, Sylvia Telles, Gal Costa, Elizeth Cardoso, Celia, Elza Soares, Clara Nunes, Joyce, Maria Bethania, Marisa Monte just to mention a dozen of extraordinary female artists from Brazil who would put most of the artists and records on this list to shame. Oh, and I didn't include her mom in the 12.
First time listen At its best when it introduces a sort of hazy, dreamy backing atmosphere to the songs. When it breaks away from this and goes for more traditional Bosa Nova/Lounge music it becomes pretty dull, but it doesn't do so often. Some of the tracks have an almost triphop instrumental to them. I think it mixes really well with her vocals. Favorite tracks: August Day Song, Tanto Tempo, Alguem, Lonely Least favorite tracks: Sem Contencao, So Nice (Summer Samba) 4/5
It's been a Long Time since I got a different, refreshing album. Even if not something I would listen to again, I appreciate to have the change to listen to some fine music outside the UK-USA axis. A mix of Latin and Jazz, it is very pleasant and easy going. 7/10
I enjoyed the rhythm and she has a great voice despite the language difference.
After hearing something bad, this really brightened the spirits
Would have loved to play any of this in college jazz. Great work, love the electronic elements.
pretty pretty
Me listening to moody, low tempo music in English: this is pretentious navel gazing. I really wish these douchenozzles would stfu. Me listening to moody, low tempo music in a foreign language: this is awesome. So ethereal and feels like a warm hug on a cold day. Good thing this is mostly in Portuguese.
Yea i liked this. Im not sure i can tell how great it is but I definitely want it on when I have a drink in my hand by a pool. Maybe with a nap.
A decent vibe
Malonu
Beautiful voice, relaxing music.
One of the reasons I started this journey was to find cool music that I had never once heard before. This album met the criteria. I was entranced by this from the first minute. It doesn’t quite reach a 5 for me, but it is damn near close.
Cool beans 3.6
This album starts pretty strong with three great tracks (specially August Day Song), but then it goes through some sweet-soft-chill-out Bossa Nova I don't end up loving. Overall, it's a pretty decent album, with some nice songs. But it's not much impressive. It's really nice the mixture between more modern elements with Bossa Nova (even though I am not much of a fan of this sound). Also, Bebel's voice matches perfectly the vibe of the album, it's very sweet and also with a texture that is very pleasant to listen to. I've loved also listening to some Brazilian music. It's such a beautiful and so musical language. So Nice (Summer Samba) is probably the best song on this record, so atmospheric but also with so many beautiful layers that make it feel such an immersive ethereal breeze, so warm and lovely. And, in fact, this album feels like a lovely ethereal breeze. It's a very sweet and delightful musical experience.
This was a palate cleansing, jam while mopping the floors on a warm Sunday afternoon listen. And I really enjoyed it and for the first real time felt like the AirPods Max were worth the $450 investment. The variety of instruments, vocals, everything came across balanced and well orchestrated. Maybe a Bossa nova fan and never knew it? I will be back. 4/5
Good fun and quite mellow.
first listen lovely
Brrraaassssillllll🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Loved it, will return once this 1001+ journey is finally done in 2029 or so.
Beautiful. Her mother's daughter.
This was unexpectedly lovely.
favorites: sambo de bencao; sem contencao; mais feliz
So elegant
А вот это боса нова мне понравилась, спокойная, расслабляющая, в одном из треков вайбы Radiohead. Приятная музыка без претензий на исключительность.
pretty good! i feel like bossa nova can often sound very stagnant stylistically, but it's not a bad style by any means so i am not complaining. when your dad is the guy who pioneered the genre, you've got a free pass anyway. gilberto's voice is delightful to listen to, with the title track and "bananeira" probably being the clear standouts to me. i love the energy here and the soft electronic inclusions across the album because it is deeply relaxing. part of me does have to wonder why this particular album of hers is considered noteworthy beyond its commercial success, though the tragic death of the producer in a studio fire is very unfortunate.
Bossa Nova feels so locked into its stylings that you could place a few of the songs off this album 10 or 20 years prior with slightly different production and I wouldn't bat an eye. Depending on who you are this is either a bad thing, pointing to some stailness and saturation in the genre, or proof that Bossa Nova knows exactly what it wants to be. I could imagine this being an issue if it was as oversaturated as some other genres on the list, but its not, so I can appreciate the beauty even if it shares a lot of similarity with all the other Bossa Nova. I thought this was lovely! I swear music like this has the same effect on my stress as a relaxing hot bath, it's such a vibe. There's some elements of the production that felt a little dated in a very late 90s way, most present on songs like "Alguém", but for the most part it was pretty great! Though the summer Samba version here pales in comparison to the Walter Wanderley version, but that's so iconic I don't think any cover could match up. Overall a strong 4!
Craig: great chill out vibe Courtney: really fun and relaxed!
Fun, exotic, different, enjoyable. I'd listen again.
very very cute and sweet. i love her voice and the production deeply!
calm and cutesy
Historically interesting and very beautiful
Very smooth and sexy.
I enjoyed this listening to this album bring a fan of bosa nova. Rebel has a pleasant voice and the music was cool and hip.
was a nice album, really well produced and easy to listen to latin music
An album of stylish elegance delivered by the next line of Brazilian samba royalty. Obviously the spectre of ‘desafinado’ and ‘girl from ipanema’ are never far from one’s thoughts. I can’t help thinking that George Michael could have explored this territory.
I do enjoy this sort of thing every now and again. Got to be in the right mood, but it's the sort of thing I'll listen to if I'm cooking something low and slow. Half decent and the list needs more of this sort of thing.
Not my thing or style but she's excellent and the songs were fun
What a sophisticated sound! A very lovely sense of tenderness that touches you. The combination of a silky smooth voice and thoroughly crafted instrumentation is nothing short of enchanted. The Intentionality of the composition hits you directly. There’s an intense emotion behind every song and so much to unpack, which I will continue to do so on subsequent listens. Faves: August Day Song, Tanto Tempo, Bananeira, Samba Da Bencao
Very good bossa nova tracks
I was not expecting to like a Brazilian bossa nova album. Part vulnerable child, part sultry lover, part nurturing mother - Bebel croons over some smooth, melodic jams. Made for vinyl. Yum.
good but not good enough to lose suba for
just lovely
A very groovy and summer-themed album, this was reminiscent of having a margarita or fresh mango on a beach. I thoroughly enjoyed this album it was quite enjoyable. I had never heard of Bebel Gilberto, however I had listened to her father’s (Joao Gilberto) work in passing. Tanto Tempo, blends Bossa Nova and electronic genres in an ethereal fashion the mix of Brazilian Portuguese and English in tracks such as ‘Mais Feliz’ and ‘So Nice’. In ‘Mais Feliz’ the guitar strumming and lyrics about a love thats comparable to a book or river. It’s a longer track and is definitely one of my favourites alongside ‘Bananeria’. The cover is an earworm!!! I’m singling out these three tracks because of the effect they had on me when I listened to it on my commute. Taking me out the morning funk and into a better mood for the day ahead. Ratings wise, I landed on a comfortable 4/5 because of how fun I found this album. - GEMV (22.01.2026)
Lovely album...it envelopes you like a warm balmy summer evening. Also great background music, but not in the elevator/medical office type way.
Nice mellow tunes and beautiful voice - wasn’t familiar with but could happily listen to again - no massive impact just pleasant
I didn't know what to expect from this, other than the title and artist sounded Brazilian/Portuguese, so I was blind going in. I was not surprised to hear Portuguese lyrics and a bossa nova rhythm on the first track, but it was very nice and I enjoyed it. The next tracks were varied and surprising (even some English!), and I found myself really enjoying this album. It's not really my genre, so I don't know if I would ever listen again, but I listened to it three times today, so overall it was quite good. Four stars.
A human life was spared to prevent this album's destruction. A Serbian in Brazil! Suba's production is great here, may he rest in peace. The album itself is a lovely, warm, very pleasant listen. Can definitely see myself returning. Another Gilberto bringing Brazilian music and joy to the world!
I fuck with this heavy. 4/5
what a lovely listen. love bossa nova, I really like the cool electronic influences on here, they're very subtle but very well executed. adds a refreshing spin on the age old bossa nova formula. very chill album, loved it
Not for me.
A very pleasant listen. Nothing here is bad, and I enjoyed my time while listening to it, but nothing really stood out. This is on the edge of a 3 and a 4 I will round up this time. Low 4.
Bossa nova muy agradable. De casta le viene al galgo.
nice album but don’t fully understand language it is sung in.
Loved it
Genre: Bossa nova An unexpected entry, but I assume the tragic story behind this is a big reason why it's here. All together though, I enjoyed this a lot! Most of this soft/lounge music is tolerable, listenable, and not very repeatable for me. However, this modern, Brazilian take on the genre is a much more enjoyable take than your average take on the sound. Some songs blended into the background, and some went full samba, with lots of energy and flair. I'll definitely come back to this one, and I recommend to anybody looking for something perhaps normally out of their range. 4/5
Well, this was just plain beautiful. Perfect music to set and forget, and if you actually tune in, you'll find that it's still interesting and strong. Phenomenal.
Super pleasant discovery, I love the fusing of jazz, bossa nova and down tempo - it works so well.
Good pop
This was an interesting surprise. I had never heard of Bebel before this but I’ve enjoyed several bossa nova albums in the past. One of the best things about this record is that I had no idea what decade it was from. I would have guessed 60’s until I heard the electronic infused track Alguem, probably my favorite on the album. A smooth, ethereal listen that I really enjoyed despite not speaking or understanding Portuguese.
Great album
Definitely the best Bossanova style album that I've listened to. The singer has a super cool voice and each track is very engaging and beautifully produced.
Nice album. Really liked her voice and styling
No standouts
Love bossa nova music. Felt like I was in a cage in Europe drinking espresso and judging all the Americans who walked by. 8/10
I really liked this. It's definitely a vibe but I'm glad I'm now aware of this so I can lean into this vibe. I started this to learn about new music and artists that actually have unique or just different styles and this hits that.
Close Your Eyes and give this album a listen. It’s So Nice.
Great album, beautiful voice and restrained 2000’s synth. Great mix
I dont even like samba a lot, just heard a few, but this... was very good. The whole album pass some calm and good vibes. I dont think the lyrics is the best, but make its job. Good work!
Favourites: Samba de Bencao ★ August Day Song ★ Bananeira Samba e Amor
I good album that I was not expecting to enjoy as much as I did!
(4) love
Chillllllll 4/5
I'm down with this. Not normally one for chill music but this takes me to a happy place
Sweet sweet Bossa Nova, no idea what its saying, but its so nice... Some soft drift away music.
This was fun!
Really enjoyable, modern bossa nova
good vibes bossa nova
So gorgeous. A voice that brings me calm.
It's all about the vocals, isn't it, and they are super charming and alluring. Though restrained, it still falls warmly on one ears, though wishes it had maybe a touch more saudade. The record feels notably front-loaded and drifts off into pure background listening territory toward the back (though the closer livens things up a bit, perhaps even too much).
Lo he disfrutado. Lo he tenido de fondo pero me ha gustado para hacer compañía.
I don't know what she was saying but it was very nice.
Is every bossa nova album on this list from a Gilberto? There's 'Getz/Gilberto', the most famous one from the most famous Gilberto, João ... then you have 'Beach Samba', an album from Astrud, who was João's wife at the time ... and now we have 'Tanto Tempo' from Bebel, who's the daughter of João and his second wife. That's three Gilbertos on this list right there. And I guess the honest question, did there **need** be three? From what I remember, 'Beach Samba' was kind of a "no." If you wanted to hear Astrud's voice, 'Getz/Gilberto' and "The Girl From Ipanema" were right there. So what about Bebel, then? Does she **need** to be here? Is this a lil' bit of a nepo baby case, hm? Well, strictly in terms of it **needing** to be here ... that's entirely subjective, but to me I don't **really** think so? And as for Bebel being a nepo baby ... for one, unless it's someone like Gracie Abrams, being a "nepo baby" doesn't really matter to me. If they have the chops, they have the chops; I don't care if one or both of their parents are a blue link on Wikipedia or not. And to be quite honest, I think Bebel has the chops — enough of 'em, at least. I mean, look, this is not a complicated album whatsoever. It's just vibes, y'know? And good-ass vibes at that. I don't know what bossa nova is generally "supposed" to be for, but at least in the case of this album, it seems like a very good one to put on and just kind of relax to. I really dug the way Bebel and producer Scuba (RIP) put this thing together. Now, of course, if you try listening to this thing a little closer ... that can maybe be where it starts to fall apart a little? I can see someone listening to this album and wishing there was maybe a **little** more going on. I know there were parts where I kind of spaced out and was then surprised to hear a song end. It might've looped some of its parts a **wee bit** too much for its own good, y'know? And, like, yeah, generally I wouldn't say any of these songs blew me away — and even in the realm of relaxing "vibes" music I **do** feel like I've heard better, even if I don't know **exactly** how you'd judge compare albums ... but, eh, I'unno. They're notable enough for me to bring up, but in the end they don't bother me **that** much. It's more a case where I don't think the albums highs are high enough versus thinking its lows are particularly low. In any case ... I mean, I'm kind of out of words, honestly. It's just a good "vibe-y" record to throw on if you need some vibes. If you want something you can actively engage with, you're probably better looking somewhere else. But I'll tell you this much: as my group's third album from a Gilberto, it's easily the second best. That ain't nothing. Also, for the record, the answer to my question that started this review/babbe is actually "no": Getz has a second album, with Charlie Byrd, and there's other stuff from artists like Caetano Veloso. Still: three outta seven, my goodness...
Loved it
I've listened to her father, Joao Gilberto a bit, and I tend to like Bossa Nova style music, it reminds me of the old-school Cool Jazz I used to listen to growing up. I'm sure that I would have more detailed notes if I understood Brazilian Portuguese. Samba de Bencao - 9/10. Smooth and silky with a little bit of a 21st century touch. August Day Song - 9/10. Not much to be said beyond silky smooth Bossa Nova. Tanto Tempo - 8/10. Sem Contencao - 8/10. Upbeat and peppy while still being simple and clean. Mais Feliz - 8/10. Alguem - 8/10. So Nice (Summer Samba) - /10. This one's in English, and it's ... so nice. Lonely - 8/10. Bananeira - 9/10. Samba E Amor - 10/10. I would point someone to this as an introduction to Bossa Nova. Close Your Eyes - 9/10. Bossa Nova can be a little repetitive, but it works in the style. Overall Rating - 4/5. When I saw the name "Gilberto" I knew what to expect. I was not disappointed.
Sort of a bossa nova album to enter the new century with some modern twists. All in all, a great bossa nova singer on a solid bossa nova album. Nothing groundbreaking, but a nice experience. 4/5
Very nice actually
sounds like a Christmas album
new one, nice one
Wish I had listened to this during a night time highway drive
I like it 3.75
Another one that isn't in my normal style, but I'm liking this a lot! Super chill vibes, I can definitely see myself listening to this with the right mood.
Very soothing and relaxing listen. Nothing too crazy going on, but a very nice qell-rounded album that you could easily fall asleep to. Excellent vocal performance as well. All around solid
chill
today we've got some really relaxing and airy modern bossa music. a bit lo-fi, honestly a refreshing modernist take on the genre. it's not surprising this lady is doing some bossa, considering joao gilberto is her dad. there's not really TOO much to say here but it's a pleasant listen. nice and soft, engaging music that can do a pretty good job of cheering you up or relaxing you after a rough day... nothing stuck out but another case of a generally good listen with not much to whine about.
3.7 2x
, malditos anglos. FAVS: Samba da bençao, Alguém, Tanto Tempo
I enjoyed this, I’d never heard of the artist prior to this
Hot. It also makes me want a warm bowl of soup.
Nice chill jazzy music to get me through the workday.
Very relaxing music! I quite enjoyed this one, beautiful voice 4 ⭐️
crazy good
fun album to listen to
Sehr schöne Album auf portugiesisch. Mal was anderes.
samba and bossa nova to have a pina colada in a coconut to on the beach with your lover to. the vocals and instruments flow into each other seamlessly.
Chill. I like it
Finally some different spices in this stew. Bossa nova is just the best genre for a lightly raining day, isn't it?
Музыка для спокойного настроения. 6,5 из 10.
Bossa/lounge vibes. Chill. Average to good. “So Nice” a standout track.
I love my samba beats, and this doesn't disappoint. Nothing crazy, definitely worth a relisten.
the music in the language you don’t speak makes you rely only on emotions and feelings rather then the lyrics and boy i had a lot of feelings listening to this one. 4.5
A very chill album. Gilberto's vocals are both soothing and atmospheric at various parts. It felt like this album echoed all around us. 4 stars as it's good, and in honour of Suba.
Beautiful.
Beautiful album. Reminds me of Norah Jones if she spoke Portuguese?
I was completely unaware of Bebel Gilberto prior to today. Tanto Tempo is an attempt at injecting new life into Saba for the new millenium and it absolutely succeeds. Gilberto's sensual voice and the lively instrumentation married with the more modern electronic beats and production; sonically lush. I have to recommend the album as a whole because it's a vibe.
Sehr schöne Stimme. Angenehm zu hören. Gerne nochmal.
Super relaxing! Lovely!
****Beautiful vocals, instrumentals, and easy listening
Always liked bossa nova but this was a really cool formal introduction to a well-known artist
Since I have a soft spot for Brazilian Bossa Nova I had a good time with this album
A little clean sounding for my taste but it’s nice. 3.5/ 5
Nice
Enjoyable background music with some interesting elements just under the surface.
Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would; haven't listened to too much bossa nova. Lovely voice; the best by far from the recent albums. Love love love the subtle electronic elements. I will definitely be listening to more of this. 8.5/10 Favs: Samba E Amor; Alguem; Samba da Bênção; Tanto Tempo
A couple of years ago, I’d never heard of any of the Gilberto family. I may have recognised a song here and there, but not the artists themselves. However, when I was generated this album today, I immediately wondered if Bebel was related to João or Astrud, and (somewhat unsurprisingly, based on the sound of the music itself), she is. This is really pretty lounge-style bossa-nova that makes to feel smarter. If I met someone who told me this was their favourite album, I’d assume they were quite fancy. It sounds so nice.
Nice for a change to listen to Bossa Nova. Great relaxing music to listen, although nothing really stands out. I prefer the Brazilian songs, the English makes the songs less pure.
tremendo
Very enjoyable
Мечтательные босановы с современными мотивами. Интересный альбом.
Music you hear in a restaurant or chill bar abroad
No idea what to expect but actually really loved this.
Sometimes it’s good to listen to things that you normally wouldn’t. This was a nice relaxing album. Well done.
Nice portuguese bossa nova!
Beautiful album. Elegance and harmony represents this record throughout. It's extremely easy on the ears, bringing such calm and solace. Definitely heard some pieces in this record that I've heard sampled by others, which makes sense given the simplicity and beauty of this record. I like this one a lot.
Glorious album.
My dad has this album. "So Nice" is a fitting descriptor.
I feel like I’m in a cafe drinking a coffee after the clubs have closed, enjoying the night air. The fusion of bossa nova with electronic music works great here to set a mood. It’s very tragic that Suba, the producer, died trying to save the album from a studio fire.
Chill album.
I liked this. 4
7/17/24. Loved this sound and take on an older sound. Will revisit.
Cool!
#114 - Solid Brazilian album, well produced. Didn't know the fire story!
An interesting update for the often-overdone Bossa Nova genre with some nice elements. Not everything works especially regarding the electronic element, but I think every fan of the genre should at least check it out.
Tanto Tempo - Bebel Gilberto ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I like her voice very sensual and just pretty. The music is Bossa Nova with some electronic elements that work better than I expected. So Nice (Summer Samba) puts me in a happy mood and makes me feel like I'm at my favorite nude beach (Black's Beach in San Diego) skinny dipping on a perfect summer day. I bet this would sound awesome at the beach!
That portuguese language, that dometimes husky voice, ... I'm in love...
Mellow and decent melodies
3.5
This is music for people who have much more interesting lives than myself. I mean, I like it...I'm just not sure I'm cool enough to listen to it. It reminds me of people who are also super into Japanese culture as if that's not totally obnoxious.
A pretty good album, I liked Bananeira and Close Your Eyes the most.
Smooth, sleek, charming, relaxing. A worthy successor to her dad. Best song: So Nice (Summer Samba)
What an incredibly grim backstory for such a pleasant and uplifting album. This doesn't feel like it really pushes the envelope that much, but it's nice to listen to. I'd still prefer the Samba and Bossa Nova of the old legends, but this does nice at blending the genre with slightly more modern sounds. Really pleasant album to listen to that seems to go by way too fast.
7/10
Not a bad song and a couple very great songs (Tanto Tempo, August Day, So Nice). What's wrong about great background music. Man, one's probably going to get some, too. Is that a bad thing? Life is short and enjoying some downtempo with a "friend" is a way to make it memorable.
she just creates a great vibe and you can’t help but enjoy yourself through this whole listen. never got tired of it
I didn't think we'd get any Amon Tobin on this list, but there he is producing the first track. Largely slinky Brazilian smooth numbers on this. It sounds original and cool and I love the sprinkling of electronics. Maybe a bit too smooth though?
Perfeito pra ouvir no fim do dia enquanto descansa. Como fiz. 4/5
Beautifully rendered and fresh bossa nova from a woman who has it in her blood. I loved how seamless they were able to work in the electronic elements without detracting from essences of what comprises the bossa nova sound. I don't know how I managed to miss this album in 2000. Glad to have discovered it.
Nice easy listening Brazilian music. Good music to clean the house to. 3.5 stars but rounding up to 4 here.
She's got a stellar voice and the songs have literally perfect smooth flow. when she hits those low notes it makes me sigh. I love the tinkly bits of piano and synth that play around the gently driving beat. Still didn't need to hear this before I die. There exists better bossa nova, though this is excellent. 3 stars for musicality alone, and one extra star because I'm thanking the good sweet lord above that I didn't get another gen x white boy grunge album from this list.
Decent, chill, and has good vibes and rhythm
Real ambient and real sexy would love to keep coming back to this....
Nice vibe, I was surprised when she started singing in english ngl
This is what I was hoping for when I started doing this list. Listening to music that I was totally unaware of. I have never heard of Bebel Gilberto and I do not listen to Bossa Nova music. I had no idea what to expect. This was a very nice album. Slower tempo and except for some modern elements it sounds like it could have been released in the 60’s, kind of timeless . It's very laid back and no song really stood out, although Close Your Eyes was nice song to end on. No question that this is some excellent background music. I'm happy I listened to this album. It was such a nice change from the last 10 Britpop and House/Electronica albums I HAD to listen to.
7.5/10
Lovely bossanova chills
3.5/5
Loved it.
Sublime
The kind of album one hears in a restaurant that forces you to ask the waiter, 'who is this playing?'
Great Album to listen to while reading, working at the computer--or candlelight dinner
i liked it! some songs sounded a little corny but i think that might have been because of the english lyrics. but her voice is very lush and overall this was quite enjoyable. portuguese is just such a crazy language!!
I'm a sucker for this turn of the millenium acid jazz stuff. Its a shame there's no 4Hero or Jazzanova (not even Brand New Heavies!). I guess this and Jamiroquai will have to do. Samba Bencao is slow and sultry until the second half with these skittering beats that wouldn't be out of place on a Mille Plateaux release. The title track has a great cinematic feel, again just really subtle electronics and modern recording techniques make what would be pretty trad bossa nova into something really fresh. Alguem goes a little harder on the electronics. The production techniques do date it a bit (and not necessarily in a good way). Wouldn't be a Bossa album without So Nice. Gilberto almost raps in Bananeira. Close Your Eyes is a cheeky little closer. Its unique for sounding strong without ever really forcing itself on you.
I'm learning from this exercise that I enjoy bossa nova. Great vibes all around. I didn't realize this was João Gilberto's daughter but it's all so obvious in retrospect. The songs did kinda run together after a while but it was a good sound so I'm ok with it :) favorites: samba da bencao, august day song, so nice (summer samba)
3.75
Fun world music, enjoyed this! 3.5/5
Lovely bossa nova with some subtle modern touches. An absolute pleasure.
1. Samba da Bênção - 9/10 2. August Day Song - 8/10 3. Tanto Tempo - 9.4/10 4. Sem Contenção - 8/10 5. Mais Feliz - 8/10 6. Alguém - 7/10 7. So Nice (Summer Samba) - 8/10 8. Lonely - 8/10 9. Bananeira - 8/10 10. Samba e Amor - 8/10 11. Close Your Eyes - 8/10 8/10
нормалек, претензий нет. вайбово.
Sumptuous, assured and elegant. Down tempo, calming and just so rich. It's lovely.
Enjoyed it but it was quite wallpapery - background music
83% Best: Samba Da Bencao; August Day Song; Sem Contencao; Bananeira; Close Your Eyes Must-Hear? Sure
Relaxing, smooth, charming
Really quite nice. Love bassa nova
Nice relaxing bossanova. I generally love hearing Brazilian music but I found this one to be a little too slow for my taste. I guess I was expecting something more appealing but this wasn't horrible. "So Nice" was great though. 7/10.
I've read about the album before, pretty sad story, but this is my first time listening to it. And I can say straight away, this is the best samba/south american record on this list. Beautiful voice by Bebel, pretty good and chilled music, I wouldn't mind listening to it in the background all the time. A very positive surprise.
