Famous bossa nova singer. Dreamy, relaxing. Very smooth, classy and cosy. Cocktails on a warm summer evening.
Absolutely lovely! With some groove!
Great stuff. Straight on the relaxed summer sounds playlist.
Sometimes it’s about set and setting. While it’s the first day of March, it’s been really nice out this weekend. It’s 60 degrees, we’ve been sitting out in the sun. I get to listen to this album on a lazy Saturday. It’s been perfect. “August Day Song” has hit its mark while I work on my gamecube controller maintenance in the sun. A huge contributor to this albums vibe it’s the really pretty blend of bossa nova with a bit of electronica production elements sprinkled in. A nod to the producer Suba, who apparently died saving this album from a studio fire. Another favorite of mine is “Algueno” for its slowed breakbeat-style rhythm, it sounds like it’s come out of a Miami sunrise circa 2000. If you wanna cut to the bossanova chase, listen to “So Nice (Summer Samba)”. The last few tracks of the album pick up the energy a bit if the pace of this album isn’t for you. But, especially in the context of this list, I don’t know how you can’t appreciate this album. Something as unique as a Brazilian bossa album helps create a listening experience, not just an album to get through. Loved this!
Charming and understated and still quite warm to one's ears (largely down to the vocals) despite the "chilly" electronica effects. One dug on release and still digs, recognizing that it can fade into the background a bit as it goes along, thanks to the opening few cuts being the most charming.
What a great album, this is modern samba, it reminds me of Astrud Gilberto work for sure and I love this vibe, I particulaarly liked "Sem Contençao" and "So Nice" that's sooo enjoyable and while listening to it I wanted to dance that's clearly a really good album !
A fresh take on bossa nova. The production was well done.
This is a bossa vibe I can dig. A lot of cool arrangements and stuff going on. Might revisit this one.

Pretty good and very interesting record of Brazilian music, most of the time correctly and nicely updated to the trends of the day. And of course, terrific vocal performances from Bebel Gilberto. The first track is Bebel actually singing over Brazilian electronic wizard Amon Tobin's "Nova", the closer of his own album *Permutations*, which I have at home and really like -- and it's a cut that's smoooooth and still futuristic-sounding almost 30 years later (!), so that can't hurt as an opener here. Pretty "August Day Song" follows, mixing English, Portuguese, Bossa and subtle electronic rhythms, which then leads to "Tanto Tiempo", which nicely explores even further trip hop / electronic turf. That song is produced and co-written with Suba, just like more than half of the other tracks on it, and I got to say I find his work for this record more convincing than the album under his name mentioned in Dimery's book. I don't know how much credence I can give to the story that he died to save tapes recorded for this record, but may the man rest in peace anyway. It's also tragic that we don't know what the Serbian producer and DJ would have done in the field of Brazilian music next. The two cuts that follow are nice but not revolutionary in the genre. Thankfully, the stakes get a little higher (and hotter) thanks to "So Nice (Summer Samba)", produced by Mario Caldato Jr. -- renowned for his work with the Beastie Boys -- and "Lonely", produced by the Thievery Corporation. Unfortunately, there is "Bananeira" next, which is far more hackneyed, and so clearly a dud in the context of this record. A minimalistic cover of Chico Buarque's "Samba E Amor" quickly fixes things, fortunately -- I think I've said it elsewhere, but it's a damn shame Buarque's *Construçao* is conspicuously missing in Dimery's list. Then, "Close Your Eyes" serves as a really cool capper for the whole thing. Not exactly sure this is "essential" album fodder, but this record is nicely done and aged quite well, which is not always a result you get when you want to update a music style with contemporary arrangements. If only for this, I leave the door open for this one. 3.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 4 8.5/10 for more general purposes. Number of albums left to review: almost none of the 80-ish extra LPs listed on this app, included because different past editions of the book have mentioned albums that have since been dropped in subsequent editions. Number of albums I'll keep in my own list: half, approximately Number of albums I *might* keep: a small quarter, approximately (including this one) Number of albums I won't keep: a large quarter
first track is absolutely amazing
I am viby
Beautiful reimagination of a classic Latin Jazz Sound.
I can only listen to seven of these, although they are very nice. I also feel bad for Suba, so I'll add a star for Suba. Thank you Suba.
Ótimo album, releitura de muita música boa com alguns poucos elementos modernos de música eletrônica em cima da mpb. Setlist muito bom e ótima voz da bebel
I like it.
Chill waiting room music. Very laid back. I'm assuming Spanish? But some inflections sound different. UPDATE: It's bossa nova and she's based in Brazil. So Portuguese. Makes sense. Mixed English phrases in there as well. Very relaxing and good for background work music.
In the early 2000s, there was a movement where a large portion of trip hop music drifted so completely into lounge, soft jazz, and similar music that it's indistinguishable from the real thing, except for the odd additional synth sounds. Case in point with "Tanto Tempo". Bebel Gilberto enlisted Serbian-born electronic artist, Suba, to produce it. The album also samples another electronic artist, Amon Tobin (an old favorite of mind). But you could very easily miss all of that and just hear it as a simple bossa nova record. The electronic elements are (for the most part) extremely subtle, suggesting that Suba turned his skills from crafting songs to impressive production work. It showcases Gilberto's beautiful voice and a long tradition of Brazillian music. Suba's dedication to this music went quite a bit further, as he actually gave his life to save it from a burning studio. Frustratingly, this album isn't on Spotify, though you'll find the majority of songs from other releases, with a handful missing.
Wow. She has suck great lineage from Jiao and Astrud. Great mud for all. perfect of work or play or need some good mellow Bossa Nova to scratch the itch.
Pretty cool bossa nova music and some that sound like elevator music. I was unable to listen to Alguem due to not being able to find a version of it anywhere.
Adored the production an instrumentation here. Great vibes
Always good to listen to
Lovely. Someone died to preserve it.
Lekker album, gaat vaker op. Heerlijk ontspannen, maar nog wel interessant.
Bit different ;) liked it it was a bit left field but decent
This is not helping with the ‘Andy secretly loved samba’ allegations. This was great, a really well put together blend of Latin singer-songwriter tracks that reminded me of Natalia Lafourcade, and some chilled-out funk and R&B that was almost like Erykah Badu in places. The production was occasionally pretty dated but there was enough character to the album for that to be easily brushed over
Smooth and chill, this would be a great play on a beachy vacation.
4.0
If ibwas Brazilian or Portuguese I'm sure i would give this album a 5. It's sound beautiful. Such a great composition and her voice is silky smooth. Shame I don't understand the lyrics but that's my problem....
Nice one.
Loved this, smooth, chill, ambient background music.
Pleasant modern Bossa Nova - and happy to listen to it again. And my, when the producer dies trying to save it from a fire, it's worth giving it a listen before you die.
J'ai vraiment beaucoup aimé. Une voix magnifique, quelques éléments qui rendent le tout un peu plus moderne que ce à quoi je m'attendais, bref une très bonne découverte. 4.5
## In-Depth Review of *Tanto Tempo* by Bebel Gilberto Bebel Gilberto's debut album, *Tanto Tempo*, released in 2000, marks a significant moment in the evolution of bossa nova and Brazilian music. With its blend of traditional bossa nova elements and modern production techniques, the album not only showcases Gilberto's vocal talents but also highlights her innovative approach to music. This review will explore the lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence of *Tanto Tempo*, along with its pros and cons. ### ****Lyrics The lyrics of *Tanto Tempo* reflect a blend of romanticism and introspection, characteristic of bossa nova. Many songs explore themes of love, longing, and the beauty of nature. The bilingual nature of the album, featuring both Portuguese and English lyrics, allows for a wider audience to connect with its themes. - **Romantic Themes**: Tracks like "So Nice (Summer Samba)" and "Mais Feliz" evoke feelings of love and warmth through poetic imagery. The lyrics often reference nature, creating a serene backdrop that complements the music. - **Introspection**: Songs such as "Lonely" delve into personal emotions and experiences, showcasing Gilberto's ability to convey vulnerability through her lyrics. - **Cultural References**: The lyrics also draw from Brazilian cultural motifs, enhancing the authenticity of the album while appealing to international listeners. ### ****Music Musically, *Tanto Tempo* is a seamless fusion of traditional bossa nova with contemporary sounds. The instrumentation is rich yet understated, allowing Gilberto's voice to take center stage. - **Instrumentation**: The album features a variety of instruments including acoustic guitars, percussion, saxophones, and clarinets. The arrangements are carefully crafted to create a lush soundscape without overwhelming the listener. - **Vocal Style**: Gilberto's vocal delivery is soft and intimate, reminiscent of her father João Gilberto's style. Her ability to convey emotion through subtle nuances in her voice adds depth to each track. - **Rhythmic Diversity**: While rooted in bossa nova, the album incorporates elements from other genres such as jazz and electronic music. Songs like "Bananeira" introduce a funkier rhythm that contrasts with the more traditional tracks. ### ****Production The production of *Tanto Tempo* is noteworthy for its innovative use of technology while maintaining the organic feel of bossa nova. Produced by Mitar Subotić (known as Suba), the album employs sampling and electronic elements without losing its acoustic essence. - **Sampled Sounds**: The use of samples from various instruments adds layers to the music, creating an immersive listening experience. This technique helps bridge the gap between classic bossa nova and modern musical trends. - **Sound Quality**: The engineering quality is exceptional; each instrument is well-balanced in the mix, allowing listeners to appreciate the intricate details in both the vocals and instrumentation. - **Cohesion**: The album flows smoothly from one track to another, with transitions that enhance its overall mood. This cohesion makes it suitable for both casual listening and focused appreciation. ### ****Themes *Tanto Tempo* encapsulates several overarching themes that resonate throughout the album: - **Love and Longing**: Many tracks explore romantic relationships, capturing both the joy and melancholy associated with love. This duality is a hallmark of bossa nova. - **Nature and Serenity**: The lyrics often reference natural imagery, creating a tranquil atmosphere that invites listeners to relax and reflect. - **Cultural Identity**: As a daughter of bossa nova pioneer João Gilberto, Bebel Gilberto embodies a connection to her cultural roots while also pushing boundaries with modern influences. ### ****Influence Bebel Gilberto's *Tanto Tempo* has had a lasting impact on both Brazilian music and international audiences: - **Revitalization of Bossa Nova**: The album played a crucial role in bringing bossa nova back into popular culture at the turn of the millennium. Its contemporary sound attracted new listeners while honoring traditional elements. - **Cross-Cultural Appeal**: By blending English and Portuguese lyrics with diverse musical styles, Gilberto opened doors for Brazilian music on global platforms. This accessibility has inspired many contemporary artists to explore similar fusions. - **Legacy**: The success of *Tanto Tempo* has paved the way for other Brazilian artists to experiment with genres while maintaining their cultural identity. It stands as a testament to how traditional music can evolve without losing its essence. ### ****Pros and Cons #### Pros - **Innovative Fusion**: Successfully blends traditional bossa nova with modern electronic elements. - **Exceptional Production Quality**: High-quality sound engineering enhances the listening experience. - **Emotional Depth**: Lyrics convey relatable themes of love and introspection. - **Cohesive Flow**: Smooth transitions between tracks create an immersive experience. - **Cultural Significance**: Revitalizes interest in bossa nova for new generations. #### Cons - **Pacing Issues**: Some listeners may find certain tracks too slow or laid-back for their taste. - **Predictability**: A few songs may come across as formulaic within the genre. - **Limited Edginess**: While its smoothness is appealing, some may perceive it as lacking in musical edge or experimentation compared to more avant-garde works. ### Conclusion Bebel Gilberto's *Tanto Tempo* is a landmark debut that successfully marries traditional Brazilian sounds with contemporary influences. Its lyrical depth, musical innovation, and high production quality make it an essential listen for fans of bossa nova and world music alike. While it may not appeal to everyone due to its laid-back nature or occasional predictability, its cultural significance and emotional resonance cannot be overstated. As such, *Tanto Tempo* remains a vital piece in understanding both Bebel Gilberto's artistry and the evolution of Brazilian music in the 21st century.
good mix between bossa nova and contemporary music
Oh, this type of thing. Alright: music like this had a grip on much of the world, give or take 25 years ago and some of it had a grip on me so I don't bat an eyelid about its inclusion in an AYMHBYD (there should be others, Amon Tobin comes to mind, but oh well). It's really pleasant, a rather fine example of that music. But here's the problem, sadly. It's just too pleasant, accomodating. It's so much on the easy listening ~Lounge end of things, with nothing standing out, I think I'd rather listen to Gilberto's dad, stepmom or album #85, Suba's "São Paulo Confessions" instead. But as I've learned how the latter was the producer of "Tanto Tempo" and died from rescuing this record from his burning studio, I have to rate it a perfect and absolute ★★★★☆: it's nice. I'm glad it exists.
Surprising and beautiful
Smooth and relaxing. A real shame the full album isn't on Spotify, I'd definitely revisit it if it was.
I enjoyed it, it was very smooth and pleasant. Unfortunately I don't speak Portuguese so I hate to dock it down to four stars for that reason. Otherwise it would be five, but Idk what it's saying.
Beautiful smooth Brazilian bossa nova. Perfect background music for a party or intimate dinner.
"The producer Suba died from smoke inhalation while saving the newly recorded album from a studio fire." Wow aber gotta love me some Latin music
nice variety. English and Portuguese as well
Albumi #85, 21.10.2024 Tanto Tempo on Bossa nova -laulaja Bebel Gilberton varsinainen debyyttialbumi vuodelta 2000. Levy on varsin rauhallinen miellyttävä bossa nova -albumi pienin elektronisin vivahtein. Erittäin hyvä albumi. Bebel Gilberto on João Gilberton tytär.
Lovely! I'm given to like bossa nova and adjacent music so this was a good time for me.
Hell yeah this is what I was hoping for more of from this list. In a genre that seems to mostly be on rails this album bends them in a very pleasing way. Bossa nova is mostly fine but this was really nice to listen to and stood out in a way very little bossa nova ever has to me
this was fun and nice to both listen to and also idly hear in the background
good album, great backing sounds, would like to listen more!
The opening tracks are strong and it lulls towards the middle. I really like this kind of mellow hypnotic music. The style reminded me of one of my favorite albums, Isolation by Kali Uchis. As I was listening I recognized that there is a song on that album that directly samples Lonely from this album. That was pretty cool.
This could have easily stayed safe in the adult contemporary space, but instead this album takes some good chances which I thought was pretty solid and fun.
It appears I like a good Brazilian. All the albums from that country have been excellent so far. This was wonderfully mellow in places, which was interspersed with some slightly more energetic songs. Its great
lovely listen
I’ve never heard this artist before, but I’m gonna give it a four because it’s so good it doesn’t deserve to be slumming down with some of the trash I gave 3.
This is one of the more contemporary bossa nova albums I've listened to. And that aspect of it certainly makes itself known, with it drawing from the sounds of R&B and trip-hop that were everywhere at the time. I'd say Bebel's reverb vocals play into that R&B vibe, while a song like 'Lonely' really lets those psychedelic down-tempo elements shine. With that said, it's very delicate with its genre fusions and the samba aspects are still at the forefront for the entire record. So what you end up getting is something part intimate, but also very cheery and relaxed as you'd expect out of bossa nova records. I love that melancholic horn that peeps every once in a while on the opener 'Samba Da Bencao' and the funk fusions of 'Bananeira' further demonstrate this album's cross-genre sensibilities. It's also the catchiest song here. A super chill listen and all the crisp, tight, and eclectic production makes this easily the best Bossa Nova album I've heard from this list as of yet. Great stuff.
I love Bossa Nova music but am only familiar with the classics from the 60s. This was a great renovation of the genre with modern production. Had a lot of fun with the first half especially. The story of the producer who died saving the recordings and her being the daughter of the Bossa Nova legend makes this one even cooler. Rating: 4.3
Tämähän oli mainio tällainen kröhm neo-bossanovalevy! 4/5
Practically impossible to find. There are a few tracks available on YouTube, and those that I heard I quite enjoyed. Other stuff by Gilberto is available on Tidal, and I quite liked that too, so I'll give a generously optimistic score.
Worth hunting out the tracks that aren't available on the streaming platforms. I think the need to do that has kinda shifted me more towards four from five. Overall I really like this style of music, but I would have believed this was a compilation album, each track is in its own right, but other than "No Return" they didn't really have a trajectory across the album. Still, big fan of the music and I'll be checking out more Bebel, I think she's still playing live!
4/5. Electronic and Bossa Nova was such a good choice because it adds the steady beat that bossa nova is missing, sometimes too much swaying or soft notes can leave the listener bored. And the switching languages creates a feeling of otherworldliness, like I am not quite here. Not even mentioning the beautiful voice driving these songs. The slow and plodding songs sometimes exist but most are mixed with other instruments to bring out the flavor so it's not all of them. Best Song: Samba da Bênção, Tanto Tempo, Bananeira
Very much more than just Bossa Nova. They do the Bossa Nova stuff well but there's this added layer of ingenuity with elements of funk, electronic and DJ'ing. Very good record. Would definitely listen again!
Hard to judge as I lack genre familiarity, but I enjoyed it.
Somehow I knew a bunch of modern covers of these songs. Really nice and pleasant to listen to :) love the vibe
Actually pretty good! Chill in the background without ever being annoying or too repetitive.
Nice and chill. Some great songs in there, some a bit too much like elevator music
Loved this album. It's samba but also something more. Like if Portishead made a samba record and leaned really hard into the samba part. It's super interesting and I really enjoyed it. Now, was it good enough for the producer to run into a burning building and die of smoke inhalation to save the masters? No. But morbidly ironic then that it shows up on this list... 4/5
Kind of spacey, very loungey. Bebel has a beautiful voice. It's hard to be in a bad mood when you're listening to something like this.
i didnt expect bossa nova to be in this list. i love bossa nova, but was never really able to get deep into the albums except for lamp ig. i think this is a nice modern take on bossa nova since it has hits of trip hop in it as well as well as more modern songwriting. the listen was pretty pleasant as well. if i were to nitpick, it seems consistency was lacking a little. 4 personal favs: tanto tempo, so nice
Some albums are on this list because they are the greatest creations of man. Some are on here because they had an undeniable influence on the next 50+ years of music. Some are here just because they are pleasant to listen to, and that's where this album sits. It's cool, but it's chill enough to have on in the background, it doesn't necesarilly force a strong reaction, but you'll feel something while listening to it without having your mind blown. Solid 3.5-4 range.
Enjoyed this
4.5 stars. Beautiful. Musically and the singing. A bit dance-y and leaning into the samba at times but most of it is chill and relaxed.
Well wasn’t this just lovely! I wouldn’t have thought to go Bossa Nova and I am so so happy we did!
I am seduced
Samba mama! Putting the boss in bossa nova! I had a delightful time easing into my morning with this one. As is normally the case with traditional inspired bossa nova music, there's not a lot fo challenging or divisive music on this record, just easy breezy tunes that will get you fixed up right!
Bebel helped me turn a rainy Asheville morning into a sunny Brazilian afternoon.
Solid bossa nova record. I love getting international stuff. 4/5
So cool
Giving this 4 because it would be perfect to listen to in the right situation which is sitting on the beach with a breeze
I think I might be in love. This is a gloriously sensual bossa nova album from Brazil sung by Bebel Gilberto and backed with electronica rhythms that veer into trip hop in places. There’s a tragic back story to the record on the Wikipedia page, but the result is well worth a listen and is one of the rare 1001 Albums that isn’t in the white male American/British rock demographic.
Absolutely relaxing music. Gifted artist
Super smooth , mellow and cool. Beautiful voice.
I can get on board with this, she's got a very nice voice. It's good, relaxing background music.
Fantastic!
Really enjoyed this album. Great music, samba rhythm, and singing. 4/5!
Ganz angenehm.
Great bossa nova
Very nice bossa nova with and undertone of electronica.
Took me a minute to get into the chill groove but once there I didn't want to leave. Very grown up. In the best way.
Absolutely love the acid-jazz atmosphere on Samba Da Bencao. I've never felt this relaxed in my life. Bananeira is a jam. Loving the flow. Mostly had this in the background, but it had a nice easiness about it that I loved for this dreary Monday morning. 4 / 5.
Really enjoyed this laid back sound. It definitely felt pretty homogenous, but there was just enough variety, especially in some of the soundscapes that were present in the background. 40 minutes was a bit longer than I needed for an album like this. I wouldn't say it was too long, just that I had gotten my fill about 25-30 minutes in.
Great singer, chill vibes. I liked the upbeat songs more. This got kind of lost in the background because most of it was in Spanish so it was hard to follow along.
Really great music for a beautiful Friday morning. So Nice I feel like I've heard before and I'm really liking whatever background instrument is on Lonely. Bananiera reminds me of some Thievery Corporation which is toight.
Melodic, jazzy, relaxing, smooth, pretty vocals, with enough upbeat energy sprinkled throughout to keep me from falling asleep. This album was a really nice surprise from an artist I had never heard of.
Really enjoy the chill vibes of the first track (which samples a Amon Tobin song "nova"). A really good overall blend of modern instrumentation and electronics/at times soft rock/city pop styles with this beautiful traditional bossa nova/salsa/samba (which I need to learn the differences between). Great to have in the background for some general good mood but she's got a great voice and the tracks have the spirit/detail to keep it interesting for a full album.
My first response when I saw this album, Tanto Tempo on the list was, this is Joao Gilberto's daughter, I must hear this! I wasn't disappointed, the Bossa Nova sound I was hoping to hear is present and though I was initially worried it might sound too modern, it's electronics and contemporary production only adds to enjoyment. To me, her voice recalls, Joao's first wife, Astrud Gilberto (not Bebel's mother) and on a few songs, I thought it was breaking out into, The Girl From Ipanema, which is a good thing. It's a beautiful record, easy to listen to and it's the type of music you want to, grab your headphones, close your eyes, put on your beach hat and enjoy the sunshine. I'm sold, time to explore the rest of her album catalogue!
samba da bencao august day song mais feliz bananeira samba e amor
This album is soooo smooth man wow! It’s like a weighted blanket for my ears. Her voice is so soothing as well. The older I get the more I appreciate more calming music!
beautiful
Superb voice. Great production. Way outside my usual comfort zone. Still loved it. 4 stars
Sexy time.
Sabroso
Me gusta mucho la música brasileira
Very very good
I liked this. Very soothing
Say what you want this is simply nice ambient music
I liked this better than some of the other bossa nova albums that have showed up on this list. This is something I would actually play at home on a regular basis.
I actually kind of loved this? Gorgeous stuff. B
This was a beautiful album. Love the bossa nova sound!
This was really great. I enjoyed it a lot.
I really enjoyed that. I'm finding that as far as good World music goes, it almost all comes from Central and South America.
Bossa Nova… mal was anderes und hat etwas von „Fahrstuhlmusik“. Recht angenehm
Love it. Perfect background music. Chill and relaxing. Listened while working.
Mmmmmm, nice. I'm a fan of downtempo chillout utility music, so some trip-hop adjacent bossanova works nicely for me. I could probably do without the English lyrics in some songs, but they don't disrupt things too much. Fave tracks - "August Day Song" even if it does have some English, and "Bananeira" for the pure Portuguese!
Smooth, elevator or cafe music style, good for relaxing background sounds
I have liked this album forever. Great background music and since I do not speak her language it is soothing and not forcing me to pay attention to the words.
En la línea de su padre.
Very nice, a more modern flair of Bossa Nova, great voice, lovely language to listen to. Favorite track: Bananeira
A lovely voice to listen to, even though I don't understand most of the lyrics.
Smooth, fun, sweet
Ah, good memories of seeing her after Tudo (2015?) This one is lovely too.
Bebel does her father proud on this album, leveraging traditional bossa nova guitar sounds and newer electronic backing tracks to help carry on his legacy. I actually enjoyed the remixes re-release of this album more than the original. The bangers are all up front here at the start of the album. It drops off a bit, but does include a really lovely cover of Valle's "So Nice". Sad to know the album's producer died of smoke inhalation while rescuing the master from a studio fire. I will definitely put this into my rotation a bit and make sure to put some Joao and Astrud on the turntable this weekend.
Delicado y elegante. 4/5.
Had to go to YouTube for this album although she has others on Spotify. I love Samba and Belel's dad (and Astrud) but this is an updated version- more modern. It's so relaxing and dreamy. Beautiful music.
This album was played in every restaurant and lounge in Vancouver in 2000
Nice chill album on this cold day.
Duplicate
I love the old samba feel. Wish I could translate the lyrics so I can understand the song. I definitely can feel the emotion
Liked this
Really quite charming and is perfectly calibrated to transport you to beaches in Rio on a rainy day in London.
Noice
This was a lot of fun
Sexy. Hypnotic. Where's my lava lamp?
The album you'd listen to by the pool of the five star hotel in Rio you're staying at, drinking cocktails with a Brazilian super model.
Wow this is super smooth. I didn't really notice the electronica influence in this until the second listen, but there it is, joining seamlessly with the classic bossa nova sound. And my word, what a voice! Just melting.
Updated take on bossa nova that still captures the essence of the original. Makes sense, her being the daughter of bossa nova legend, Joao Gilberto. This could easily be worked into my day to day listening.
Nice new Bossa
Super pleasant!
Jazzy and awesome. Can't understand and still love it. 4.3
Me gusta
sympathique, surtout la première chanson de l'album. L'écouter en entier par contre m'a paru répétitif
Bossa nova, genre le plus sous-côté. Chill, ensoleillé, apaise tous les maux.
Love it. Bossa Nova is an adorable type of music. I feel like a movie with a happy ending. Always brings me up!
Loved
I didn't understand the words but it just made me happy. Music should invoke a feeling and this definitely does that. I don't know if I'll seek it out again but I really enjoyed it.
Smooth and enjoyable the whole way through
Great modern interpretations of bossa
Reminded me of Katamari’s OST. Great production and vocals
Nice voice🤙
Bebel Gilberto- “The producer died of smoke inhalation after saving the album from a studio fire??” That’s crazy. I like the electronic textures on the first tune would like more of those throughout. 3.5
Incredible, Gilberto's entire family is beyond talented
as someone from brazil im sad to read the reviews that deny this beautiful album simply because its not in english. i like the fact that bossa nova has really changed over the years, this is really groovy compared to the early bossa nova.
I really like this! Interesting year from which to include a Bossa nova vocal album like this. I'd imagine a 60's-70's one, but this is like a throwback that I never heard of. Oh, I didn't realize it was João Gilberto's kid! I'd say it's a 3.5 - 4 for me... dig it a lot as a chill out album. Well recorded and performed. Really like the voice and instrumentation.
The super chill coffee house vibe and ethereal vocals make this a fantastic album. It perfectly fit my mood for the day.
very mellow and I enjoy Brazilian Portuguese. great background music.
Nice enough, not something I would usually choose to listen to but I enjoyed it.
Absolutely gorgeous and perfect for this grey fall day. Super chill and not something I think I'd usually seek out but I'm really enjoying reveling in it. I'll have to explore more Brazilian music!
What a beautiful album.
bas dobar album
Sviđa mi se, dobar glas i muzika. Laganini za slušati dok radiš
The acoustic guitar textures and the vocals on this album are lovely

A smooth listen. Liked it more than I thought I would.
Bossa nova. Me gusta. Un 4.
owo 8/10
Luscious and mellow bossa nova that goes down really easily. Almost ideal date music. A bottle of wine a crackling fire and a special someone to enjoy a deep connection with. I like this 4 stars
Wow love this so much, never heard of Bebel Gilberto and haven't actually listened to much Brazilian music in general. I love her voice it's such a sexy album. Particularly loved the more ambient tracks and also Bananeira is really fun. Super relaxing and beautiful.
I thought this was so beautiful and soothing. Some of it did remind me of the Sims music too. I could picture listening to this on a beach bar somewhere hot. Gorgeous guitar playing
Well this was smooooooooth. Made me want to be at a quiet beach bar with an aperol.
Bebel's vocals are warm and the sound is so clean it sounds like you are listening on a $50,000 sound system rather than my 20 year old NAD. This part of Bossa Nova's royal family is gently fusing bossa nova with electronic. It's too bad the 1001 didn't spread its wings a little further away from the family tree and have music that stretched deeper into electronic with bands like Bossacucanova. Given that we are over 900 days into this, I doubt we will be getting into such bands or other Brazilian genres such as Brazilian country called Sertanejo that was popular with the non-mainstream types the last time I was there. I digress. Tanto Tempo is a good and I will listen to it more in the future
Hard to find the full album of this but really enjoyed as much as I could get to - sounded in parts 60s, 80s, 90s... Air, Bossa nova, jazz
Oh that voice. So smooth, so sensual, just beautiful. Not exactly my style of music but I can really appreciate her talent. I really enjoyed listening to this. 4 stars.
Du bon bossanova, excellente musique d’ambiance et d’étude, mais j’écouterai pas ça en front mettons
Many lovely songs that made me relax and reflective. Gilberto’s beautiful voice is breathy but rich. I like the traditional sounds with touches of today’s electronic textures. Very enjoyable with so many great musicians. After a few listens, only Close Your Eyes became skippable for me. My kids immediately liked Bananeira. Me too but it’s so catchy that it kept me up one night as an ear worm.
Luck of the draw I'd just recently been served an album by the producer Suba who died as the result of a fire during the production of this album. This is good, and more accessible for me than some of the South American music I've heard on this list.
Bossa nova. Jazz.
Suba died from smoke inhalation while saving the newly recorded album from a studio fire. Hyvä. Arvoa. Albumille. Kuolema
les gens qui n'aiment pas la bossa nova n'aiment pas la vie je pense
…and now I'm pregnant. Amazing album. For a Y2k release, this could be right out of the 50's / 60's with a Sinatra / Gilberto feel. Babel Gilberto does to Samba and other afro-cuban styled music what Amy Winehouse did with American Soul - took it from the past, put a little modern polish on it and succeeded. 4/5.
Very chill vibes
Loved this album
Yes
Hermoso y tranquilizador
Very soft airy album, unlike the general vibe i get from latin american music I've heard previously.
Really enjoyable and different to stuff I normally listen to
I enjoyed this. It could have been recorded 40 years earlier, when bossa nova was first a world-wide phenomenon. Sure, some aspects of the instrumentation might be more contemporary, but essentially this is a bossa nova record. Take So Nice - it was one of the biggest-selling bossa tunes of the 60’s (under the title Summer Samba) - the English lyrics were supplied by Norman Gimbel, who also did the translation for The Girl From Ipanema & would later write the lyrics of Killing Me Softly. To me, Gilberto’s version sounds like it comes straight out of the 60’s, like so much of this record. And that’s fine, although the tunes I enjoy most are the handful that stylistically veer elsewhere - the beats in August Day Song are infectious; the pace of Sem Contencao ; on Alguem, she reminds me of Sade at her best. I was not familiar with her work at all, but I thought this was a great listen.
Might listen to again
Soothing
Very sensual album. Great bossa nova.
hypnotic and soothing, her voice is like butter. songs mostly in spanish, but occasionally in english. i could listen to this and fall asleep (and i mean that as a compliment).
Bossa nova. Me gusta. Un 4.
An album that is new to these eyes and ears, Tanto Tempo is a smooth, silky and sweet collection of 21st Century bossa nova bangers from Ms. Bebel Gilberto, whose name bores resemblance to another bossa nova great but doesn't compare with her beyond those connections. This is a fine debut album as well, one that shows the stylings of a vet in the making despite what it seems. Seek this one out. Favorites: Samba Da Bencao, Tanto Tempo, Sem Contencao, Mais Feliz, So Nice (Summer Samba), Lonely, Bananeria, Close Your Eyes.
This album is gorgeous and such a welcome change from the usual overrepresented British nonsense. Absolutely loved listening to this a couple times today.
Maravilloso (ONB)

Oh, my, what a VOICE. When vocalists have the talent and training to use their voice as a true instrument, it's always so impressive to my ear. The musical style of the songs on this album suits her perfectly, and it is a genuine pleasure to listen to her sing and to the musical accompaniments. This is great.

Beautiful music; beautiful voice. I wish I understood more of the lyrics.
Really good honestly, loved the instrumental and vocal delivery
Beautiful stuff, would love to hear Groove Armada get there hands on this a la At the River.
Bon

Enjoyed this
Not much better than sitting on a beach in Maui listening to soft Brazillian sounds.
Pangtasa.
6/5 bueno
It was nice listening to it while working. I liked the vibe and could see myself putting it on again as background music. Solid 4 stars.
My aural palette isn't sophisticated enough to distinguish any particular Bossa Nova song from The Girl from Ipanema. That said, I always love the grove. This album could play on repeat in every elevator and supermarket for the rest of time and I'd be happy.
I'm not a huge fan of this genre of music in general, but this is a very good example of it. Smooth vocals and excellent orchestration make for an extremely relaxing experience.
I did not come in thinking I would like Tanto Tempo. I'm not a fan of her voice. It's calm and soothing but it sounds a bit straight-toned and un-lively at times. I find that it may get boring at some points if you don't pay attention. There are 3 or so songs on here that are boring. But there are some upbeat and groovy songs on this album. It's one of the better albums I have been generated that was outside my comfort zone. I think a 3-star score doesn't do this record justice. A solid 4 seems to be an overstatement for me. So I will go with a very light 4. Highlights: August Day Songs, So Nice (Summer Samba), Bananeira, Close Your Eyes
Listened to it eating tea by a lake in the sunshine. +1* for that.
Mellow. I liked this a lot, especially "August Day Song"
4, suba is based
So soft and sexy
Solid groove
Sounds pretty good, easy listening background kind of music
Bossa Nova, liked
Nice and calm. Like a Spanish-speaking Norah Jones in an odd kind of way. I dig it.
This was some nice and gentle stuff to start my morning to. I feel like I can’t give it a fair review without understanding the lyrics, so I will give it a 4 for benefit of the doubt and for creating a nice atmosphere and vibe.
Nice light background bossa nova 4
Tranquilo. Música melódica bien construido
This album it a good example of why I really enjoy this list and this website. I would never listen to this album or have even heard of it otherwise. This was a really enjoyable album despite not being able to understand most of it.
Chill and wine
Relaxt. Bossanova.
Great sound quality. Great music. Not really my taste for bossa nova, but very good.
Un bel album bossa nova qui secoutentrs tres bien 4.5
A very chilled out album, great for those lazy Sundays when you just want to relax and drink coffee. Would be an album I will be listening to again
Very chill music. Radio afterwards was very jazzy
De va riktigt bra!
Cool mix of bossa nova and electronics
7/10
Loved this vibe!

Warm, unaufgeregt, tröstend, funktioniert auch leise, welch moderate Kraft. Ich fühl mich verliebt, berührt, aufgehoben. Intime 3.9
mellow - really liked this, was pleasantly surprised, never heard of her before
Mjög ljúft og notalegt
Easy listening, a few very good tracks
portuguese jams are what i need in the morning I hope. V v v refreshing. also a little too much so we'll see.
Favoriete nummers: - August Day Song - So Nice
Filha do João Gilberto, sobrinha do Chico Buarque. Familia foda, e um otimo album.
Bosa nova? Great vibe.
'Tanto Tempo' brought me back to the random Bossa Nova phase I went through in lock-down last year. As Gilberto proves, that's not a bad thing. Super groovy, although I could imagine it being slightly boring and repetitive if jazz/bossa nova is not really your thing. I listened to it on a Saturday morning while doing the chores. Safe to say, Gilberto's smooth tone made my errands a lot more enjoyable. Some favourites included Lonely, Mais Feliz, August Day Song, and Close Your Eyes.
Extra chill and noooice style fusion.
nice chill music
Love the latin grooves and precussion. Think its fairly unique to have samba music this well produced.
Enjoyed listening to this on a rainy day. Nice change of pace.
Done. Good dinner party music.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrazil
This album is chill and nice
Breezy and lovely.
Really nice blend of classic bossa nova and modern instrumentation.
Destaco a Sem Contenção e a Close Tour Eyes. Nota: 7,5/10 29/05/2024
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: August Day Song, So Nice (Summer Song), Bananeira Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Nice voice and beats. Really liked this, will be returning
solid bossa nova jazzy vibes. I appreciate the warm sound- none of that hyperclinical dentists' office sound that many newer jazz albums have
was waiting for something a bit different from generic rock and this was certainly it. I enjoyed it, would not be a regular listen but good. 3.6
Bosa nova, es siempre bosa nova. Música que siempre te lleva a otros lugares. Aunque me encanta no le pongo 5 estrellas por que la veo algo artificial.
The whole album isn't available on Spotify in the UK. However, what is there is quite lovely. Mellow, understated instrumentation coupled to beautiful, breathy vocals; bar one or two odd production choices (the trip hop percussion on the opening track belies its turn of the millennium provenance) this proved to be a nice surprise.
Very good South American music. Enjoyed more than I thought I would.
Beautiful voice and sexy samba music. Very nice vibes
really smooth listen, top tier bossa nova
great bossanova like mom and dad did! fav track: Sem Contenção
Ähnelt Luna Llena
This happened to fall on a sunny summer day, sat in the garden, so suited the mood beautifully.
Very relaxing
Dope Bossa Nova album! It's a great genre of music that it's a little surprising i don't listen to it more often.
feels like i'm in breezy restaurant for an early dinner in the summer when the sky is still bright before sunset.
Most of this was in I’m guessing Portuguese so I couldn’t understand a lot of it, but it was ok music. Decent to listen to, but not incredibly interesting. 3/5
Great voice. I wish I knew what she was sayinf
Fun Sunday morning listen. Great background music while making breakfast. 7/10 Top song Lonely

I'm so happy to find this album here. It might not be an essential album, but it's long been present in my life. Nothing new, slightly modernized production with old-school sounding intrumentation and sample based flows. It fit perfectly with the downtempo vibes I was into in the early 00's. Half of the album is excelent, the other half is less memorable, but I'd still highly recommend it as a contemporary work of boss/samba/triphoppy music.
Perfect voice for this modern bossa nova set. They keep it interesting while never straying from the form. Has a Thievery Corporation feel: loungey, laid-back, smooth, and entertaining.
This one is fine. It's a very pleasant album, but I feel like it doesn't have a strong identity of its own. The generic album art doesn't help that much. A good album, but not one that feels like it is essential. Favorite track: "Samba da Bênção," I think
Curious album to listen to while mowing the lawn. But it's solid. She definitely has a beautiful and soothing voice.
A very bright bossa nova album that goes well with a sunny day. This seems to have a mix of live and programmed instruments, which makes sense. The guitars and horns are light and airy, while the percussion is heavier and more repetitive. Most songs are pretty empty, letting Gilberto take center stage. Her vocals are great but not amazing. An exception to the empty songs is "Close Your Eyes," which is lush and builds to one of the few climaxes on the album. As peaceful as listening to this is, the album could use more moments like that to keep your interest. The drums also bring this down a bit, as they sound like standard downtempo percussion and would benefit from more variety. A pleasant listen, but not a very substantial one.
Nice listen. Easy to enjoy.
This was cool and groovy. Beautiful vocals. Beautiful arrangements. Overall, I enjoyed this.
A very nice album for background listening. Calming, soothing. Not distracting. Not engaging enough for focused listening, but that's probably not its purpose.
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is a bossa nova album. It was a perfectly fine and pleasant listen, but don't see myself coming back to it.
Enjoyed the experience, and I really liked Samba Da Bencao which starts the ride. Too much of the rest faded into the background for me and I didn't love the tracks that most mixed in modern music components.
3/5 - I kinda floated along on this for most of the day. I imagine this is what people who browse glossy art mags sit around and listen to in their galleries, which probably isn't true, but your sorta get the idea. That's an aspirational thing for me, even though working in an art gallery sounds super boring.
Hyvä bossa novaa, kivasti vähän modernimpaa kun instruissa on elektronisia elementtejä. Bananeira oli kanssa lähea funkkia. Rento ja kesäinen fiilis. Parhaat: Bananeira, Samba Da Bencao, Alguem
achei gostosinho, mas é bem situacional pra mim
It was really nice Bossa Nova, but I can't say I remember all that much of it. Great lounge music, not great music to actively listen to.
Its relaxing and soft wich is good. Its a nice nigth listen. But its not something I would go out of my way to listen to again. There are better and much more interesting albums that sounds like this.
Day890 - pleasant music i had it on while i was working but not really must listen to

fine easy listening
A chillout, pleasant and soothing bossa nova album that mixes acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Singer has a relaxed voice. It’s a nice listen, but also nothing that really pops to me at stand out or super memorable. But it’s a good end of the night album for a glass of wine or decaf espresso to cap off the night and relax.
Ta weno, bossa nova
Not close to my favorite Bossa Nova album but the genre had to be represented somehow. She has a great voice regardless. 8/10 [KEEP]
Sounds amazing. Great vibe. I think I need to hear more from the genre and era to actually judge it though.
Fine. Not quite my thing. I wouldn’t complain if this was playing at a restaurant or party.
Nice, a welcome start to the day, but not much else.
It was fine, but didn’t strike me as anything special.
