Alveg næs svo sem, bossa nova er stíll sem ég kann að meta, en þarna er smá tíundatugar blær sem dregur verkið niður, og engin lögin kalla sterkt á mann við fyrstu hlustun. Svo þetta er þristur simpatico og áfram gakk.
This one sounds exactly how I would expect a Brazilian Bossa album to sound. Unforrunately, it doesn't add anything new to the genre, and there are no real hit ... so I'd rather listen to the classics.

Out of the tens if not hundreds of great bossa nova artists Bebel Gilberto is the first one for me in this project, and although I willingly listen to her music, I still hope to catch also Dorís Monteiro, Elis Regina, Eliana Pittman, Sylvia Telles, Gal Costa, Elizeth Cardoso, Celia, Elza Soares, Clara Nunes, Joyce, Maria Bethania, Marisa Monte just to mention a dozen of extraordinary female artists from Brazil who would put most of the artists and records on this list to shame. Oh, and I didn't include her mom in the 12.

Nice lounge music, easy to get lost in. Hard to tell multiple songs apart but a nice listen
I'm a sucker for some bossanova and smooth vocals, so the first half of this album I enjoyed. The second half got a little too smooth jazz for me. Highlights: "Samba Da Bancao" and "Tanto Tempo"
Brazilian Bar-Blues.
First time listen At its best when it introduces a sort of hazy, dreamy backing atmosphere to the songs. When it breaks away from this and goes for more traditional Bosa Nova/Lounge music it becomes pretty dull, but it doesn't do so often. Some of the tracks have an almost triphop instrumental to them. I think it mixes really well with her vocals. Favorite tracks: August Day Song, Tanto Tempo, Alguem, Lonely Least favorite tracks: Sem Contencao, So Nice (Summer Samba) 4/5

This was as far as I can tell, okay bossa nova. I don't know enough about it to say "this was the defining album of this genre" etc. It all kind of sounds similar to me. This was easy to listen to and nicely produced, I can't relate to it. I probably wont put it on again
South American Jazz
It's been a Long Time since I got a different, refreshing album. Even if not something I would listen to again, I appreciate to have the change to listen to some fine music outside the UK-USA axis. A mix of Latin and Jazz, it is very pleasant and easy going. 7/10

I generally enjoy jazzy bossanova on the background and this worked as such. However it didn't quite make me jam to the beat same way as for example Astrud Gilberto stuff does. Not bad but i don't feel the urge to listen to this again.
Not really my thing, but bossa nova is so cool. This one is smooth, jazzy in the loungey kinda way, it grooves in the most laid back style. Also very sexy.
The English interludes were a little jarring; otherwise this was wonderfully cozy

Nepo more of the same Astrid did it better; mix of languages gimmick which I suppose was a novelty at the time.
Me listening to moody, low tempo music in English: this is pretentious navel gazing. I really wish these douchenozzles would stfu. I knew I like Bossa Nova, but I didn’t realize I could like it this much
This was a pretty fun listen, but it did fade a bit into the background for me. I found the vocals really strong and the beats pleasant- but I also forgot I was listening to this sometimes.
It was pleasant, if a bit forgettable for me. Probably my bias from not understanding the language, but no great desire to re-listen to it.
Yea i liked this. Im not sure i can tell how great it is but I definitely want it on when I have a drink in my hand by a pool. Maybe with a nap.
I've been listening to Os Mutantes and other tropicalia recently so I was entirely in the mood for this - but also how can you not get drawn into her intoxicating spell?
She has a nice voice but I found the majority of the songs fairly boring.

A warm and pleasant listen. She has a lovely voice and the production is luscious. Still, it didn’t knock me over, and some of the tracks reminded me of lobby music. Lobby music for a very nice hotel, mind you, but music that drifts to the background regardless. Consider this a strong three.

Very generic Bossa Nova, but this style is very rarely bad, so...
A generic bossa-nova won't hurt anybody. It was all enjoyable, but all forgettable.
Sounds to me like a Brazilian Sade, which is a compliment. "Tanto Tempo" and "So Nice" were pleasant tracks to listen to.
Like her voice, and the music. I wish I spoke Portuguese. But still enjoyed listening to this as I worked today.
Really beautiful album. Enjoyed it quite a bit - would be great for a casual gathering

Easy smooth beats for easy smooth mornings
Relaxed Latin music
Most of the time I listen to the album from this generator first thing in the morning, occasionally time of day can have an affect on how much I enjoy listening to an album depending on how it matches the vibe, sometimes good and sometimes bad. For this album, it definitely enhanced the experience overall. This is normally not really my thing at all, but having a super relaxing Latin jazz album playing while I did my commute to work was actually really nice. Everything from the soft vocals and the soothing instrumentation was just so nice and chill. I can't bring myself to rate this any higher purely because it really isn't my thing at all, and I would never normally seek out this kind of thing, but I am glad to have experienced it, if nothing else just to listen to something a bit different in a setting where it worked so well, but it's unlikely that I see myself ever really returning to this.
This is different, and I like it. It's bossa nova combined with electronic music. Very chill and calming. I would 100% play this at a fancy, classy suit and tie party with a complimentary glass of champagne.

Nothing here was designed for me, and that's okay, not everything has to be aimed at me. I don't like the music, I understand very few of the lyrics. It's a lazy, lay around in the sun type of record. Nothing here is bad, it just isn't made for me.

Did not enjoy. I’m not a fan of Bossa Nova.
One of the reasons I started this journey was to find cool music that I had never once heard before. This album met the criteria. I was entranced by this from the first minute. It doesn’t quite reach a 5 for me, but it is damn near close.
I always appreciate less conventional genres on this list but do so many of them have to be samba/bossa nova? This was just boring. The definition of elevator music.

Enfin un album qui change un peu du rock des années 70 ! Et c'est plutôt une belle découverte. Alors je ne connais rien au genre donc mon avis vaut ce qu'il vaut, mais déjà, c'est un album très centré sur la voix, ce qui est bien puisqu'elle a une très belle voix. Côté instrumental, c'est très discret, mais distinctement brésilien. C'est trop rare d'avoir ce genre de musique dans cette liste donc c'est d'autant plus appréciable.
This album starts pretty strong with three great tracks (specially August Day Song), but then it goes through some sweet-soft-chill-out Bossa Nova I don't end up loving. Overall, it's a pretty decent album, with some nice songs. But it's not much impressive. It's really nice the mixture between more modern elements with Bossa Nova (even though I am not much of a fan of this sound). Also, Bebel's voice matches perfectly the vibe of the album, it's very sweet and also with a texture that is very pleasant to listen to. I've loved also listening to some Brazilian music. It's such a beautiful and so musical language. So Nice (Summer Samba) is probably the best song on this record, so atmospheric but also with so many beautiful layers that make it feel such an immersive ethereal breeze, so warm and lovely. And, in fact, this album feels like a lovely ethereal breeze. It's a very sweet and delightful musical experience.
This was a palate cleansing, jam while mopping the floors on a warm Sunday afternoon listen. And I really enjoyed it and for the first real time felt like the AirPods Max were worth the $450 investment. The variety of instruments, vocals, everything came across balanced and well orchestrated. Maybe a Bossa nova fan and never knew it? I will be back. 4/5

first listen lovely
A very easy listen. Reminded very much of St Etienne (and I like St Etienne alot) but its genuine rather than the winky irony of St Etienne. Sounds a little dated with its late 90/millenial trip hoppy beats. Very pleasant. Did also remind me of Wii Sports.
Tanto Tempo Is there any other way than breezy to describe this sort of album? I don’t think there is, because it is breezy - gently swaying bossa nova rhythms and instrumentation with hushed and laid back vocals, evoking evenings strolling along beaches with pastel v necks slung nonchalantly across shoulders, the gentle lapping of the waves getting your rolled up linen trousers wet. I’m not so into bossa nova that I can differentiate it greatly from other albums in the genre, but I do like it. However I don’t find the tracks where it combines electronic elements with the core sound that interesting as on Alguem or the bonus track No Return, or when it deviates into insipid funk on Bananeira or when it lands on something like the uncomfortably upbeat Close Your Eyes. The more straightforward songs like the opening 4 songs of Samba de Bencao, August Day Song, the title track and Sem Contecao or Son Nice or Samba e Amor I find are far more engaging. For an album and genre that trades on lightness of touch, it is also a bit long at 45 mins. 30 minutes would probably feel like the right length for something like this to skip along amiably and end before it gets too cloying. It is very easy going, and very listenable, if not the most heavyweight of albums - making it the most three-est of threes. 🕰️🕰️🕰️ Playlist submission: Tanto Tempo
This doesn't feel so much like bossa nova dragged to the modern age, as the modern age dragged to to 60s bossa nova. Do you know what I mean though? 'Samba Da Benção' (_Sunbathing Bent Cow_) certainly has some dreamy woodwind going on, adding a nice to hook to a somnolent opening track. Surprisingly 'August Day Song' (_Canção do Dia de Agosto_) exhibits some opening acoustic arpeggios that are not unlike Johnny Greenwood's work. In places the guitar feels like a slow motion Nick Drake. It's still bossa nova, but with some all too subtle departures from the usual. Despite some nice ongoing touches, whether that's the subtle strings on the title track which are like a seductive, cinematic score; or the quasi trip-hop textures of 'Lonely', it gravitates back to the platitudinous. This is my issue with the art form as a whole, which I find very limited in scope and apparently retreading the same chord progressions time and again. Not as monotonous as some of the bossa nova we've had, it does at least try in places to escape the beach bar, non-offensive aesthetic. Although not very hard.

Interesting album today. Not expecting much from it, but was pleasantly surprised. Not my kind of stuff, but had a couple of play throughs and enjoyed it. Wouldn't choose to listen to it again though I don't think.

Dattera til det som tydligvis er min favorittartist i en sjanger jeg egentlig ikke liker men som jeg har gitt 4 i gjennomsnitt? I prosjektets største plot-twist gleder jeg meg til å høre bossa nova! Det eneste jeg er skeptisk til, er at det er fra 2000-tallet -- det dårligste tiåret siden 1950! Førsteinntrykk: hun har ikke stemmen til sin far; ønskte egentlig hun holdt kjeft og lot musikerne lounge i vei uforstyrret. Hjelper ikke at vokalen er mixet kjempehøyt. Er skuffet over at Joao sendte dattera si til å kjempe i loudness-krigen. Liker de elektroniske elementene, men det høres ut som de har blitt bitcrushed helt uten grunn...? Lydkvaliteten på synthen passer ikke inn i lydbildet ellers. Det musikalske er godt nok til å veie opp for svakhetene (vokal, mixing/production), men det er på hengende håret.

Fine listen but nothing unique.
Some part of this reminded me of some of Yoko Kanno's acoustic tracks on the Bebop soundtrack. I wonder if it's just me because those songs are so embedded in my brain. That's my big takeway after one listen of this today, I do like brazilian music, this was decent!
It’s a snowy day outside, you wake up early and get yourself a cup of coffee. Is it Charlie Brown Christmas or do you want to pretend you are somewhere warm but still fits the mood just right- you turn it on. I don’t know much about Bossa Nova but I do know I like the vibe. That all being said, it did feel pretty limited for me personally to the vibe.
Entirely new to me and I can only find about half of the album on YouTube, but enough to give me a good flavour. Beautiful laid back Bossa Nova album, lovely way to start a Saturday morning.

pretty good! i feel like bossa nova can often sound very stagnant stylistically, but it's not a bad style by any means so i am not complaining. when your dad is the guy who pioneered the genre, you've got a free pass anyway. gilberto's voice is delightful to listen to, with the title track and "bananeira" probably being the clear standouts to me. i love the energy here and the soft electronic inclusions across the album because it is deeply relaxing. part of me does have to wonder why this particular album of hers is considered noteworthy beyond its commercial success, though the tragic death of the producer in a studio fire is very unfortunate.
Bossa Nova feels so locked into its stylings that you could place a few of the songs off this album 10 or 20 years prior with slightly different production and I wouldn't bat an eye. Depending on who you are this is either a bad thing, pointing to some stailness and saturation in the genre, or proof that Bossa Nova knows exactly what it wants to be. I could imagine this being an issue if it was as oversaturated as some other genres on the list, but its not, so I can appreciate the beauty even if it shares a lot of similarity with all the other Bossa Nova. I thought this was lovely! I swear music like this has the same effect on my stress as a relaxing hot bath, it's such a vibe. There's some elements of the production that felt a little dated in a very late 90s way, most present on songs like "Alguém", but for the most part it was pretty great! Though the summer Samba version here pales in comparison to the Walter Wanderley version, but that's so iconic I don't think any cover could match up. Overall a strong 4!

3.5 stars This is a lovely record. It’s warm, relaxed, and effortlessly transportive...you can instantly picture a tropical vacation, a beach wedding, or a sunset on a boat somewhere warm. There’s nothing here to dislike; it’s beautifully produced and easy to sink into. That said, while I enjoyed it, I didn’t find myself especially captivated by it. It works perfectly as atmosphere, but it didn’t quite rise above that for me. Maybe that’s the point, sometimes an album doesn’t need to be intellectually gripping to be effective. Favorite tracks: August Day Song, So Nice (Summer Samba)
This was OK, but I can't say there was much there that I liked. It had some interesting moments in the midst of something I found boring overall. It reminded me a bit of the Norah Jones album from a few weeks ago, where it sounded like something I'd enjoy for the few minutes I was inside a store but forget within a few minutes of walking out. I think this one had a little more life to it, though, which I appreciated. It wasn't a bad listen, but I probably won't be listening to this again. Overall: 2.4/5

At first I was pretty intrigued by another Brazilian artist because I’ve liked the samba on this list so far. But halfway through I had to ask myself, if it wasn’t in Portuguese, would this sound any different than a subpar coffee shop album? For me, it’s a no.

An album of stylish elegance delivered by the next line of Brazilian samba royalty. Obviously the spectre of ‘desafinado’ and ‘girl from ipanema’ are never far from one’s thoughts. I can’t help thinking that George Michael could have explored this territory.
I can’t fairly grade this since I don’t understand the lyrics but from what I can hear, unlike her producer, I could have died without hearing this.

What a sophisticated sound! A very lovely sense of tenderness that touches you. The combination of a silky smooth voice and thoroughly crafted instrumentation is nothing short of enchanted. The Intentionality of the composition hits you directly. There’s an intense emotion behind every song and so much to unpack, which I will continue to do so on subsequent listens. This is probably the highest 3 I can ever give an album. It’s just lovely bossa nova with lovely charm to it. Nice vocals too. I don’t think it pushes the needle too much however.
It's honestly such a nice and easy listening experience, with beautiful vocals from her. Just well-produced Bossa Nova, perfect for my road trip. Nothing too special.
Not bad just boring to me this style of music really needs the lyrics to be understandable as the backing is just not unique enough to make it stand out.

This is a pleasant Bossa Nova album. Is she a Nepo baby? Perhaps… her voice is interesting and the instrumentation is solid. Favorite songs were So Nice, Bananeira, Close Your Eyes, and No Return.

A very groovy and summer-themed album, this was reminiscent of having a margarita or fresh mango on a beach. I thoroughly enjoyed this album it was quite enjoyable. I had never heard of Bebel Gilberto, however I had listened to her father’s (Joao Gilberto) work in passing. Tanto Tempo, blends Bossa Nova and electronic genres in an ethereal fashion the mix of Brazilian Portuguese and English in tracks such as ‘Mais Feliz’ and ‘So Nice’. In ‘Mais Feliz’ the guitar strumming and lyrics about a love thats comparable to a book or river. It’s a longer track and is definitely one of my favourites alongside ‘Bananeria’. The cover is an earworm!!! I’m singling out these three tracks because of the effect they had on me when I listened to it on my commute. Taking me out the morning funk and into a better mood for the day ahead. Ratings wise, I landed on a comfortable 4/5 because of how fun I found this album. - GEMV (22.01.2026)

I was not expecting another bossa nova album, but this time a modern one from 2000. Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Joao Gilberto, who did the Getz/Gilberto album (also on this list). On that album, Girl From Ipanema was sang by Astrud Gilberto, the stepmother of Bebel Gilberto. So this is a legendary bossa nova family and this album was one of the most popular albums outside of Brazil in 40 years. It's really nice to listen to and perfect for a lounge setting. It did seem like a more modern version of Getz/Gilberto, but also stayed true to the classic sound.
With this we drive far away from my taste. Surely ambient but I can't relax or work to sound like that.

part of electronica's takeover of numerous musical traditions in the 00s, this is a decent album. having the lineage of one of brazil's most famous musicians probably helped bebel out here, but she is also legit talented. nothing on this album is essential, but nothing is bad either. "bananeira" is the standout track here, a strong mixture of bossa nova, funky bass, and electronic music
There's part of me that's glad that other genres and even different languages are being recommended because it shows this list is nothing if not diverse. This is something I never would have listened to before. Unfortunately it's something I'll probably never listen to again. Perfectly inoffensive music, nothing that much to write home about apart from a couple of ok tracks. I have to imagine that there's better recommendations than this in terms of foreign language or world music, there just isn't much to say here.

I didn't know what to expect from this, other than the title and artist sounded Brazilian/Portuguese, so I was blind going in. I was not surprised to hear Portuguese lyrics and a bossa nova rhythm on the first track, but it was very nice and I enjoyed it. The next tracks were varied and surprising (even some English!), and I found myself really enjoying this album. It's not really my genre, so I don't know if I would ever listen again, but I listened to it three times today, so overall it was quite good. Four stars.

Sorta confused by this album’s inclusion. Not that it’s bad but more it’s sort of. Generic? Dime a dozen? There are several Brazilian albums I can think of that are more fun and innovative and include samba songs like the ones on here.

What? Atanarjuat 3: An iguana watches Iguazu? This album was so long and slow. I'm not even opposed to elevator music, I gave Aja 5 stars. This is just too much though.

This is a little bit of a jazzy album, it was pretty nice having it in the background, but nothing too exciting. This is what they play at those hipster art galleries, but overall decent.

This was an enjoyable listen. Tried learning Portuguese for a few months on Duolingo, but can’t say I picked up enough to follow the songs. Either way the music and singer’s voice were pleasing and easy to listen to, I continued to enjoy when Spotify autoplayed her other works.

It's another Gilberto! I liked this more than either of the previous Gilberto albums I've heard. Part of it is the better recording quality, but most of it is the singing. It's not that uncomfortable ASMR whisper singing. I guess I actually like bossa nova if that's not a requirement of the genre.

Nice vibes, sounds like being on a beach - but a bit repetitive
Genre: Bossa nova An unexpected entry, but I assume the tragic story behind this is a big reason why it's here. All together though, I enjoyed this a lot! Most of this soft/lounge music is tolerable, listenable, and not very repeatable for me. However, this modern, Brazilian take on the genre is a much more enjoyable take than your average take on the sound. Some songs blended into the background, and some went full samba, with lots of energy and flair. I'll definitely come back to this one, and I recommend to anybody looking for something perhaps normally out of their range. 4/5

As always, because I'm an ignorant American I have no idea what Bebel Gilberto was singing about. The producer (Suba) died for this album, so it's probably a good thing it was so well received. Fortunately, this album and Suba's Sao Paolo Confessions album made this book, so I'm sure that is some comfort to his family. This is the kind of music I would hear in a very fancy restaurant. So much so, I want to instinctively desperately search for the cheapest thing on the menu. I do find it difficult to determine if this is good Bossa Nova music or not, as my opinion is basically: (Person who has only seen Boss Baby) "This movie is giving me Boss Baby vibes." The music sounds good, her voice is good and this is very pleasant to listen to.

This was an interesting surprise. I had never heard of Bebel before this but I’ve enjoyed several bossa nova albums in the past. One of the best things about this record is that I had no idea what decade it was from. I would have guessed 60’s until I heard the electronic infused track Alguem, probably my favorite on the album. A smooth, ethereal listen that I really enjoyed despite not speaking or understanding Portuguese.

This album is definitely a product of its time. In the early 2000s, there was a big trend of hip hop and electronic producers doing downtempo, acid jazz, and trip hop reinterpretations of classic jazz. This album came out right at the peak of that era, but instead of remixes, it’s built around original songs that are deeply rooted in classic bossa nova.

Pleasant. Really interesting that it matches bosa nova with some kind of trip hop elements - I think I like it most when the record leans into these kind of sounds. In the one day listening to it, it didn't massively grab me. I'd like to spend more time with it, but it's not top of my list to go back to either. (crazy sad story re the producer on the Wikipedia. If you're reading this and haven't read that yet then go read it now)
Actually own a Bebel album, not this one, don’t have any idea what the reason I first picked it up was, but always liked it. And like this, don’t understand much of it but it’s just a smooth sound and groove, 3 Star.
I'm not that well versed on bossa nova or samba, but I can definitely enjoy some laid-back, jazzy Brazilian sounds. Her voice is lovely, and the subdued palette/pace of the songs makes for a very chilled album. The slow tracks with acoustic instrumentation have a great tone (like Samba E Amor and August Day Song). There are a couple of faster songs (like Bananeira) that give some energy and variety. However, I don't really know who was crying out for bossa nova to be stapled together with shonky new age tones, mediocre downtempo beats, or insipid piano ambience. Many of the tracks end up feeling like a "fusion" sound, designed to make an exotic sound more palatable for people to buy for dinner party background listening. The more boring and insipid tracks ends up creating a lot of drag, and the album ends up feeling long and dull. 2.5*

I really liked this. It's definitely a vibe but I'm glad I'm now aware of this so I can lean into this vibe. I started this to learn about new music and artists that actually have unique or just different styles and this hits that.

Calm and pleasing samba/bossa nova music here. Fits a certain vibe and setting - great listen on a walk, or some other solitary activity. Music did not blow me away, nor is it innovative in any way - just a good version of what it is. Not clear why it is on this list, but glad to have listened to it.

Last time I spoke about Serbian producer Suba, I mentioned how his final act in life was saving the recordings for this album from a studio fire. The third studio record from acclaimed Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto, daughter of bossa nova pioneer João Gilberto and Brazilian singer Miúcha. Needless to say, there's a lot of pedigree going into this album. Right off the bat, I have to give props to Bebel's sultry vocal delivery. She offered a mesmerizing performance as she ebbed and flowed between Portuguese and English lyrics of yearning emotions. Pairing her with Suba's downtempo meets bossa nova style of production was a good match. The organic instrumentation, the soft electronic loops, all these elements worked in unison for a very lush style. It felt like a natural continuation from São Paulo Confessions, while elevating a promising vocal talent. Tanto Tempo was such an exquisite listen. It makes me wonder what could have been had Suba lived to continue working with Bebel. For now, I'll take solace in what we have.
