Reviews (page 5 of 13)

phenomenally good first half , then dips into more traditional soul . 4

Papa Was a Rolling Stone is one of those songs that you wish were twice as long.

The Temptations deliver.

Enjoyed this, had some classics on it

A transition for The Temptations? This feels like an album with two souls: traditional Motown of the 60’s (second half) and first half is their best Sly attempt. Funky and political, there are some fantastic songs.

vibey first excursion into mo-town. Lovely vocals - not enough coke

This one got me groovin', man. Papa was a Rolling Stone is by far the most popular song here (and by far the longest track) but I was really into a bunch of the others on this.

Very cool.

“Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. The rest of the songs are good too. Must listen #44.

The first two tracks are fantastic. Then the version of “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” starts great but goes on a bit, though I love the wah-wah guitar. “I ain’t got nothing’” is such a great song. Overall a great sounding record, with fantastic performances.

This was a funk-soul surprise for me. I really had no preconceived notions but this far exceeded my original passing thought of ‘Meh, I’ve heard these guys’. This lead me down a funk/R&B rabbit hole that now stretches from the 60s up to yesterday and is my current go-to playlist.

This is a very good album. Short and sweet and a time capsule of many groups from that generation.

Love this - the harmonies, the funk. The best ever version of 'Papa...', no contest. The space and pauses in it work so well. It does sound like a bit of a compilation, the sound not really pulling the tracks together as an cohesive album, but as collection of songs and performances, it's brilliant.

This was a great album to start the day with.

Very nice

Who would have thought that everyone's favourite clean boys could be funky like that? On all three tracks of the A-side they give the biggest names like Sly and Funkadelic a real run for their money. The B-side is unfortunately, as most people will agree, a bit of letdown after the exhilarating first side. But hey, they're still some very solid, above average soul tracks, so I'll take it.

Smooth as silk. Kemur svo líka á óvart. Áhrifamikil.

great funk infused album by the legendary artists. plus, it contains an all timer, “papa was a rolling stone”. highlights: “papa was a rolling stone” “love woke me up this morning” “the first time ever i saw your face”

Interesting one. Some stone classics, couple of superb cover versions, couple of relatively throwaway tracks. A rich listen.

Any 60s/70s Motown music is great. It’s easy listening and as a Michigander, I love the sound it brought to the mainstream music scene.

Funky and soulful. Great offering from the Temptations

Classic Funk always a good time.

This is a funky experiment. 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone' I loved. I don't really like the long spaces of instrumentals between songs, but I can see why they did it. I'll add that one to my bar's playlist. 'Run Charlie Run' also fantastic.

Scrolling through my history, somehow I missed rating this close to a masterpiece of an album. Always a fan of the Temptations, this album kept them relevant when it was released…Psychedelic Soul was born. Papa, great song.

Når den er funky er den 5/5, når den er r&b er den nærmere 3/5. Mødes på midten

oh yah. i liked this A LOT. every time i listen to this kind of music i have to wonder how come not all music sounds like this? i love the instrumental affectations of soul music soooooo much. fav tracks: funky music sho nuff turns me on; papa was a rolling stone; mother nature

I listened to this while I organized my storage and it was kinda perfect for it because of how energetic it is. I loooove papa was a rolling stone and how long and drawn out it is….the beginning build up is so great and overall just loved the rhythms in the whole album.

Really enjoyed it. Brightened up a Monday. Everything from funky to soulful, and always smooth.

Papa was a rolling stone. One chord. 11 minutes. Holy Christ it’s great. Johnny wah wah Watson. The lyrics ‘and when he died/ all he left us was alone’ ‘The first time ever I saw your face’ is an interesting choice. I don’t think it’s one of the better covers of that song. The other commentary songs fall a bit short of ‘rolling stone’. But nearly every song ever does anyway. This is a good album 4/5.

84% Best: Run Charlie Run; Papa Was A Rollin' Stone; The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face; Do Your Thing Must-Hear? Sure

Impeccable grooves as expected

It feels like this record must‘ve set the standards pretty high at that time. Not only vocally/sonically but also the songwriting pushed boundaries of that schmosey genre far.

This is great, hadn't heard any of it. Sounds like the group wasn't all that keen on the psychedelic soul direction at the time but I hope they were eventually proud of this. music: appreciated. (⌐■_■)

Review for the album: the funk stuff is better than the smooth r&b stuff, and the real long song was good as hell, this was a solid album and I liked it a lot. Four stars. Review for other people’s reviews: if you listen to this and say “This is DIVISIVE and TOO POLITICAL” because there is a song or two about how maybe people shouldn’t be racist, you have an American Baby Brain and should read a book and calm down lol. Zero stars.

Lovely.

top 3 Papa was a rolling stone funky music sho nuff turns me on i aint got nothin'

Some songs threw me off but I enjoyed a lot of this.

hell yeah so chill

Corking!!

Short but sweet. Glorious version of "Pappa was a rolling stone" and a delight that felt like the universe was talking to me in "Mother Nature".

Really great.

++: Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On, Papa Was a Rollin' Stone, Love Woke Me Up This Morning, I Ain't Got Nothin' +: Run Charlie Run, The First Time Ever (I Saw Your Face), Mother Nature, Do Your Thing 7,9/10

Okay, the rest of the album isn't as good as Papa, but that's an astronomical bar, and it is at its worst just really good classic funk. At its best, though? *chef kiss*

Pleasantly surprised by this one - very funky, very groovy, had me dancing most of the way through! I had heard Papa Was a Rolling Stone before, and I think a couple of others, but the whole album was generally full of bangers - would definitely llisten again! Faves: Papa Was a Rolling Stone; I Ain't Got Nothing

good variety on this album, it was nice!

Not my favorite album of theirs, but "papa was a rolling stone" carries the whole project

As I have said many times now Soul music was never my thing and the only time I would hear back in the day was at the local Mecca. But I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. I never knew that there was an extended version of Papa Was A Rollin’Stone and what a brilliant song and recording it is. This is worth the cost of the album alone and will go on my list. I listened on Tidal hi-res stream and the sound of the recording is excellent. Luxurious deep clear sounding. A lovely record to curl up to as I did on a dark autumn evening with the lights down. List come up trumps again with a revelation. 4/5 7/10/24

Enjoy the jam. Back when music and songs went as long as the artist felt it should go.

Not what I was expecting, but I only knew "My Girl" beforehand. A lot more soul and funk was included, and I found myself enjoying all 33:33

Would have been better with fewer slow songs

I didn’t realise I needed a 12 min version of papa was a rolling stone but I did

first listen the mothergroove

They are good, but they are still N#$$%^

Loved it!

A fun, upbeat album. I love diving back into funky 70's jams. Such great musicality and stage presence, even through the audio. The songs and lyrics really seat you in the time period. Themes of community, brotherhood, race, and empowerment. A soundtrack for a generation.

It's the Temptations, so the singing being on point is a given. The production in this is also great. Very funky and soulful.

When they turn up the funk they are one of the best. PWARS is genius. Some of it is a bit too doo wop wop for my taste.

This is NOT the R&B I was expecting…

its such a beautiful day, its such a lovely kiss

Run Charlie run

Good stuff!!

First song, first listen....I'm just not cool enough for this music!

Really lovely, didn’t massively listen in order but a sound of music that I really enjoy.

Great collections of big soul songs. Nowadays it might be something you heard enough in films etc but it's still good for every party.

I did like side one a heck of a list getter than side two. Still liked I "Ain't Got Nothing" and the Isaac Hayes cover "Do Your Thing" off side two as well. (8.1) ★★★★

"Papa was a Rolling Stone" is a masterpiece, the rest is good, but not up to the same level. Low 4 stars

Fantastic first half of the album. Ok second half. That equals 3.5 stars. Soooo…..I’ll be nice and round this up to 4.

Quite enjoyable and a fun listen, 4/5 stars. Very different to what i’d normally listen to.

Fuck yea the Temptations rock Run Charlie Run (this song is actually hilarious and a bop) Poppa was a Rollin Stone fire

Man, listening to this while walking around town is guaranteed to make you feel like a badass.

I thought this album was great. I'd actually never listened to "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" before this, and it's a masterpiece. I also loved "Love Woke Me Up This Morning". I think the album could've been more cohesive. The first half of the album, which is filled with strong, upbeat, funky songs, is better than the second half, which is mainly ballads and I felt that they dragged a bit. Overall, still a great album, and I'll be listening to this again.

The uptempo funky Temptations with their fine voices and some banging tunes.

Loved it

I liked the range of style on this album. I really liked the long Papa Was A Rolling Stone.

Buen sonido. Papa Was A Rollin' Stone, es buenisíma. Un clásico.

Lovely sound. Great harmony and a couple classic songs

Some good classic soul and funk.

There are some great classics here. The album is short and sweet and features a range of soulful voices.

3 stars for Papa was a rolling stone alone. Another star for the opener everything else is pretty middling. Papa warrants the price for admission.

soul funk 还阔以

I enjoyed this album much more than I expected. There are such great songs and not "just" old R&B, to my ears, with more variety and just a lot of depth. It also took more risks than I would have expected.

FAVO: Papa was a rollin' stone, The first time that I saw your face, Do your thing

funky, soulful, dynamic, great voices and harmonies

The Temptations have had an incredibly long - 60 years, so far - and amazingly prolific - over 40 studio albums, and 22 others, live albums, compilations, and soundtracks. All Directions is their sixteenth album, and includes one of their most successful songs, "Papa was a Rolling Stone." The Temptations have made songs centered around harmonic arrangements of a collection of five strong voices. They have incorporated soul and gospel elements as their career evolved though the decades. All Directions is more political than their earlier work, and the success of this album pushed the band in that direction for most of the 70s.

funky soul that make me wanna dance at 1am with my significant other! Good Album and the extended Version of Papa was a rolling stone also Great!

Old school funk

very talented group

A high quality 36 minutes of beautifully constructed soul music. Even if 12 minutes of that is a cover of ‘Papa was a rollin’ stone’ that on paper sounds incredibly dull … but in practice is a phenomenally executed exercise in restraint.

Good stuff!

funky asf (as funk)

Que belleza esos sonidos.

"All Directions" is the 16th album by American vocal group the Temptations. Soul, funk and pyschedelic soul. Yes sir. The album was produced by Norman Whitfield and the first without Eddie Kendricks, the band's falsetto singer. Commercially, it hit #2 in the US becoming their most successful non-collaborative album. It was critically well received with many considering it their best 1970's album. The album opens with "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On." It's a cover of the Edwin Starr song and what sounds like a live recording. They absolutely get the funk going. They continue the funk on "Run Charle Run." Piano, bass, bongos and pyschedelic guitar. A serious song telling a story of the white flight from cities. A thumping bass, the top hat and wah-wah guitar begin the epic "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone." It's a cover of the Undisputed Truth's song and one they resisted recording for a few reasons including the day mentioned that papa died on(September 3) which supposedly was the day one of the members' dad actually died (proven false). I am glad they did. A total jam with all five members performing ensemble style. A story about a papa who never worked a day in his life. The second side has two beautiful ballad-like songs. They cover Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's "I Ain't Got Nothin.'" Piano, strings and more in the do-wop style. "The First Time I Ever (I Saw Your Face)" continues the string addition. A gentle song with a gospel vibe. Great tenor singing. The first side of this album is harder with a more serious tone. The second side is more gentle. Great vocals and harmonies. Tremendous production especially the first side. Funky, pyschedelic and soulful. Not a bad song on the album. A solid recommendation.

The Temptations were a solid part of my upbringing. I loved those guys.

Great album with a couple massive hits. "Papa was a Rolling Stone" is one of my favorite songs to ever come out of Motown.

A generally good funk album - short, seeet to the point and groovy. Wah Wah everywhere and all that’s left is a 70s Blaxxploitation movie to go with this record. Still fun although track 2 gets one grimacing a little - funny now words can make one do that

bops on top of BOPS!

Intro - good start to the album and sets the expectation for how the rest of the album will sound RCR - interesting lyrics to say the least, however, quite the powerful message PWARS - song a little slow however it was fantastic in my opinion, worth the 12 minutes as this track displayed for the listeners the lyrical capacity of the band LWMUTM - wow. this song was incredible. everything from the lyrics to the instrumental to the vocals. this song went straight into my playlist as soon as it graced my ears. IAGN - powerful lyrics to portray a great message to the listeners about feelings of isolation TFTIESYF - beautiful love song DYT - fantastic finish to an overall great album Overall, this album surprised me with how fantastic the writing was. With some songs leaving me somewhat disappointed, like Run Charlie Run or the intro track, other songs, such as Papa Was A Rolling Stone and Love Woke Me Up This Morning made up for it just by how much the songs blew me away. All in all, this is a good album that I would definitely recommend.

Great music, no real low points and I could definitely groove to it. Some of it didn’t quite grab me, but still liked it a lot.

Really enjoyed Papa Was A Rolling Stone! The rest of the album was worth a listen too.

Nice and chill R&B, Groove. Trumpets, bass and distortions.

The Temptations' All Directions is a quintessential example of 70s funk and soul at its finest. This album marks a notable shift towards a more funky sound for the group, featuring the long jams, dry "in the pocket" drumming, and upfront bass that define the era's groove. The musicianship throughout the record is impeccable, with standout contributions from the brass and strings adding rich layers to the sound. The vocal performances are, as always, top-notch, showcasing the seasoned expertise of The Temptations. Among the standout tracks, "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" shines as an epic masterpiece, embodying the essence of the album, while "Mother Nature" also emerges as a personal favorite, perfectly capturing the album’s vibe.

Did these guys put out multiple albums a year, or what!? This is a classic. I can't believe they were able to get away with saying the "n" word so many times on Run Charlie Run! That would never happen in today's popular music..... Papa Was A Rollin' Stone is the jam. On I Ain't Got Nothin', I like the nod to The Flamingos' I Only Have Eyes for You with the "shu bop shu bop".

Always smooth and always great.

Classic

Very good. Great group.

Not my kind of music but surprisingly enjoyable.

70's soul. Temptations slipping more into soul/funk from their pure Motown roots -- they can still sing with the best but the tracks here aren't fantastic (with the exception of the seminal Papa Was A Rolling Stone). High marks for the overall sound less a little for mostly mediocre songwriting.

Great little album. Really enjoyed the funky songs on this one the most and really only two songs didn't really grab me. This is probably most accurately a 3.5 for me but I am going to round up here.

Classic.

Love these guys.

I really enjoyed this, but I think part of it was because it was a 35 minute LP. Right when it felt like it was starting to drag it wrapped up.

Pretty good. A little bit of funk. Worth hearing again

I really enjoyed it. 4

Great collection of well put together tracks. Really enjoyed listening to this in its entirety, and would happily listen again.

No P-Funk today, but I get the third best thing. Fuck yeah.

Holy Moses the 70's was not afraid to throw down the whole ass n word. Papa Was A Rollin' Stone is a cool song. I Ain't Got Nothin' is another fabulous song. The last three tracks sort of fall off for me but another great album in this run I'm on

It's a classic and a bold move for the Temptations.

really powerful album Favourite track: Love Woke Me Up This Morning

Muy bueno

Was really into the funk at the beginning, headlined by Papa Was a Rolling Stone. Less into the back half of the album when it went to the slower more doo-wop pop ballad stuff. Not bad by any means, loved all the string arrangements and stuff, but liked the funk better

Mit dem Klassiker Papa Was A Rollin' Stone

Not their best album. Papa was a rolling stone is the clear highlight here and an amazing song by itself. The rest of the songs are nice but not as impactful.

Good stuff. Dragged a tiny bit at times but still felt like all bangers no filler

This slapped really good. Definitely one of the better R&B albums on this list

Papa Was A Rolling Stone is a deathless masterpiece. Much of the rest is mildly interesting.

The Temptations, as good as they are, always felt like a conglomerate rather than an actual band. Check out the past members section on Wikipedia. Vocally they are as great as ever and at this stage their music was super funky. But there's a nagging feeling that they are a showbiz type band desperately trying to keep up with the times.

Yeah some strong numbers on here with fresh sounds and a vocal range from space.

Had a lot of fun but didn't love the slower songs

Different than what I expected regarding what I generally think of when it comes to The Temptations, but of course it was still bangin.

Not many bands can get away with an album in which one song is 1/3 the time length of the album. But the Temps 'Poppa Was A Rolling Stone' does just that on this 33 minute lesson in funk / soul amazingness. 4.5/5

Smooth

Run Charlie Run is not a song I'll be playing out loud anywhere any time soon. Funky song though. I Ain't got Nothin' is so smooth. The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face is also so smooth. Do Your Thing is a fun ending, I added it to a playlist. This isn't exactly my type of music but I enjoyed it a lot. Outside of Papa Was a Rollin' Stone the songs are all short and don't get boring. 7/10, fun album!

Papa was a Rolling Stone is a masterpiece, but the others aren't. Oh well, the Temptations had a string of hits so maybe this is their miss. But Papa is amazing! 4 stars for Papa

Always good.

This is what I'm talking about! 4.4.

Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

Nice enough, and it of course has one of the greatest tracks of all time on it (you know which one). Torn between 3 and 4 on the whole, and this is the lucky album that gets rounded up because I did a lot of rounding down recently.

Good background music, but very repetitive. And suddenly it was over. Favorite song: papa was a rolling stone.

6/6/24 very much my speed. so smooth and easy to listen to. have to check out the rest of their discography. so many hidden gems i bet. 7/10

My first Temptations album, hell yeah. This was a bop, nothing with staying power for me though. Mental note to check out their other stuff.

Very funky, more strings that I would have thought Ended up much more peaceful than anticipated

yes, yes, yes

Ah psychedelic soul at its finest

- the funk goes hard - papa was a rolling stone is phenomenal - almost no filler, not that big of a fan of the last two songs, but well, they are good nonetheless - the stereo separation gives me headaches on headphones

unreal harmonies, their voices melt together like butter. could listen to these guys sing the phone book

I was not excited to listen to another Motown album, but I'm pleasantly surprised. While most Motown I'm familiar with is bubbly and relatively superficial lyrics, this one has sophisticated layering of sounds with some serious, political tones matched by the vocals. And hey, I'm a sucker for the funk.

Loved it.

# Playlist Track - Papa Was A Rollin' Stone # Notes - Funky! I like it. - "Papa was a rollin' stone" absolutely should not work, but it does! Super drawn out sections and slow build ups and it managed to pay off nicely. Cool! - The ballad was kind of a downer, tho.

I like it, funky.

Papa Was Rolling Stone is a title I've heard lots over the years, but the actual track was disappointing. Otherwise nice eclectic bag. The 70s were great really.

very fun and funky good listen

The second song N word refrain, so not what I’d like to listen to but this is a great album otherwise

Good Album - Solid 3.5 round up to 4

Funky, expressive, very nice. I was not a huge fan the slower songs. Songs did start to meld together a bit towards the end. 7/10

I had no idea The Temptations were so bad ass. This album kind of blew me away. This is not typically my kind of music but Papa Was a Rollin' Stone is an almost 12 minute jam. The first lyric isn't until you've grooved through 4 minutes of smooth funk. Oh it's a cover? Interesting. It's still good! The fact that the My Girl band put out this album is crazy. And unfortunately Run Charlie Run is constantly stuck in my head now.

Surprisingly enjoyed

Zwischen Defolnics und Zombies. Fast besser (und früher)

Absolute funk, was really digging some more Motown/soul so glad I got this for DAY 1. Really love how The Temptations can keep the same groove for an entire song but still make it so addictive. Can imagine cracking this out in the kitchen after a big day. Also the bass singer is 😮‍💨 Favourite songs: Funky Music, and I Ain’t Got Nothin’

Great album.

This was a really pleasant surprise. I had no idea this is what The Temptations could sound like but reading around the progression of the band and their sound it makes sense. The brilliant 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone' is a perfect centrepiece but it's just groovy and fun the whole way through.

Whoa. This was good stuff

Dont recall hearing these before even though the name sounds familiar. Enjoyed it. Funky, didn't drag on, would listen to again. 3.5*.

Papa was a rolling stone Coole RnB Musik

Honestly, it was difficult for me to listen to Run Charlie Run and I skipped through half the track. I just personally don't care to listen to songs with heavy n-word usage. It wasn't a bad song, I just prefer not to listen to it. Otherwise, the album was fine.

Only one great track, but what a fucking great track

Excellent 4/5

The back half of the album is largely just ok, so was going to rate this a 3/5, but the first 3 tracks are so good (especially Papa Was A Rolling Stone) that I had to bump it up to a light 4.

I don’t remember the other temptations albums super clearly but this one has to be up there with my favorites. It’s was funky and soulsy and R&B incarnate and the lyrics had some great social commentary in them. Papa was a rolling stone was my fav.

Loved some songs, others not so much. I found the vocals and lyrics rough on a couple of tracks, but Papa (did not feel like a 12 minute song), Run Charlie Run (powerful lyrics, catchy rhythm), and Mother Nature held it together for me.

Super funky. I love it!

Twelve minute version of “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”? Sign me up! Also, gotta admit I did a double take and a chuckle hearing Otis sarcastically singing “The n****s are coming!” to call out the racist culture of white flight very common at the time (and continues to today). Funky music with a message that resonates is always a nice combo.

I knew of the Temptations (mainly because of 'My Girl'), but this album showed me a whole other side to them! Very funky with some great bass lines. Overall a very fun album

Total classic.

Me gustó

This is what's great about this app. We've all heard of The Temptations but never listened to a full album. Really enjoyed it

"All Directions" from The Temptations is a beautiful assortment of tracks. Ranging from funk to heavenly R&B, their musical prowess is clearly evident. The harmonies are just so pure and sweet.

original motown flava. a lot more slow and steady compared to the other funk/soul albums i've listened to thus far. many of the albums were peak getting down on the floor and shuffling but this one is a lot of slow dance stuff. there's a dance hit or two in here though!

This album was a real blast. It's that typical blues-funk-soul-band with quick, biting horn stabs, great vocals, and classic (yet very simple) chord progressions. A fun ensemble that was perhaps a little surprising for its time. The 70s aren't normally associated with such an intensely 50s/60s style - but then, the Temptations had made a big name for themselves by this point. Interesting touch of politics, presumably, in the track Run Charlie Run. The lyrics are pretty cool, and I especially like how their grim, sarcastic message conflicts with the upbeat positivity in the music. I've never heard the extended/album version of Papa Was A Rollin' Stone before, and it's just as good as the single. Long instrumental build-up is worth the wait. I do wish a few more tracks on the album had the courage to be longer than 3-4 minutes, because it seems like that's all it takes for the Temptations to really shine. Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On is a medium-paced headbanger with a lot of call-and-response between several vocalists. It introduces the album's fun-filled atmosphere effectively. Do Your Thing is an interesting contrast to conclude the album: a laid-back song draped with soft bass and backing vocals. While the remaining tracks were definitely good, they're harder to remember. All I can recall, a few hours later, is that the album didn't flow very congruously. The track listing jumped from quick, peppy funk to ballads, which isn't intrinsically a bad thing - but safe to say it didn't work here. Rating: high 4/5 Key tracks: Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On, Papa Was A Rollin' Stone, Do Your Thing

Listened to this while playing Inventions. I lost for like the 7th time in a row...it is just so freaking fun. This album was a fantastic soundtrack to my epic defeat. I did not realize how socially charged some of the music was going to be, and I loved it. It's not all just "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Hmmm...that originally auto-corrected to "First Time Ever I Saw Your Facebook..." which makes me want to hear that song with updated lyrics.

Enjoyed the heavy funk but the lighter stuff on the album not as much. Some fabulous 70’s vibes here though.

Was will ich mehr?! Rating: 3,75/5

Temptations produced a ton of music over decades. However thier sweet spot of the early seventies contained thier signature sound and catalog. This is an excellent representation covering thier funkiest and most soulful, truly All Directions

The opening track, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Mother Nature, and Do Your Thing are the Standouts that earn this album 4 stars.

Really good. The first album side through Papa is unstoppable. I had no idea the Temptations were capable of such in-your-face psychedelic funkiness. Really loved those moments. I liked the next few songs as well—much more in line with what I typically think of when I think of the Temptations—but generally, I feel this album falls off as it approaches the end. Just loses steam and is frankly unbalanced in terms of sound and direction. Very top heavy. Extra point for Papa.

My first listen of this album was through the speaker of an echo while cooking dinner and I was unimpressed. Second listen was through my good headphones and thank god I listened again. This record sounds phenomenal and is worth the best speakers/headphones you have. Everything sounds so lush and full. Great musicianship and lyrics. Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone is an all-timer. The first half is stronger than the second

Chill and funky. Me like-y.

Thought papa was a rollin stone would be the best but God dam mother nature... what a song

Great listen, not sure I had heard the 11-minute version of Papa Was A Rollin' Stone before.

Funkalicious!

This is a bit embarrassing, but I only really knew \"My Girl\" before listening to this album. It was a pleasant surprise! I wasn't sure what to make of a 10-minute song, but \"Papa Was a Rolling Stone\" ended up being masterful and suspenseful. Overall a wonderful listen.

i loved it so fun such vibes

Funky, 4 stars too much 3 too less

Some Motown classics on here, a favourite being Papa Was a Rolling Stone.

I am not that big fan of the big old classics. Temptations is a solid album there is no doubt about that. anyway I would give it 7 out of 10

Really cool

hadn’t heard this side of the temptations before. nothing super special but Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone elevates the album to a 4

The who What’s are coming now?

Funky and soulful

Stone Soul Groove

papa was a rollin' stone

love woke me up this morning, the first time ever i saw your face(this one was on Glee xoxo), Mother Nature, Do Your Thing

It's impossible for me not to love this music. Motown is just the music I enjoy the most. I was surprised to find out "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" was almost 12 minutes long! Solid album from start to finish

Great easy listen. Worth 4 stars alone for Papa Was A Rolling Stone.

Not my favorite album from The Temptations, but there are some really great songs here. "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" is a classic, and "Do Your Thing" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" are also highlights. Plus it's The Temptations - they'll always make enjoyable music.

I well loved this! I listened to it twice. It was varied and interesting and a real groove. Just proper feel good pleasing music.

Lovely stuff, very much enjoyed

way too short but so good.. love this classic groove/rnb stuff. now i can finally remember who otis williams is on crosswords. 7.5/10 fav tracks: run charlie run, papa was a rolling stone

A solid showing by all involved on this LP; it starts off somewhat rough (the Edwin Starr cover making me think my headphones were broken) but smooths out into luxurious funk courtesy of the Funk Brothers. Ironically it is the Temptations' vocals which prove often to be the weak points, unable to hit the crisp highs and rumbling lows necessary for peak emotional punch (see "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"). Still, overall an enjoyable listen.

Loved it! Look at those Tree Wizards go. 4/5

Well, this was a treat! Funky beats, black power and a nearly 12 minute cut of Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone that takes up half of side one. Side two is a little more laid back, but still gorgeous listening.

It's funky, it's pretty laidback, it has some great tunes. The second side of the album is a bit duller and more R&B than the groovy funk on the first side; if it has consistently stayed on the first side direction, it could have won 5 stars.

excelente album de musica black dos anos 60-70

An album that starts energetically and ends on a soulful note, with a magnificent centerpiece. “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” is a true gem that elevates the entire album and makes it a must-listen. So, give it a listen!

I ain’t got nothin my fave prolly. I enjoyed very much. 4

Here we go! Papa Was a Rollin' Stone was oft mentioned by our dad and I think he even had that as grandpas ringtone. I knew generally why our dad had that as grandpas song, but it's funny when you start looking at all the lyrics and not just the chorus. "Sayin' that papa had three outside children and another wife, and that ain't right". Grandpa is almost up to three by my count so I'm glad I could dive deeper into this song, and album. Really great funk grooves and beats.

Track 1 and 2, 5 stars. Papa doesn't need to be 11 minutes long. After that bit mellow, but still enjoyable.

Funky-groovy, sweet and swinging, these guys were professional-grade at everything they touched.

Quick and enjoyable. Miss classic Motown music.

Album 3/1001 This album has a very good start, quite happy and fun. The first two songs put me in a very good mood. BUT, starting with "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" things change. The album takes a more melancholic and sad turn. It changes so much that it seems like another album. This is not bad but I do think it is quite confusing when listening to it. Apart from that, it was a very good album, the bass completely won me over, it was something that I really liked. I would totally listen to it back. Notable songs: Run Charlie Run, Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On, Papa Was A Rollin' Stone and Do Your Thing

Gran disco con una canción excelente; papa was a......

Paar goede klassiekers zeg. Behoorlijk funky.

Smooth as they ever could be

Quite good

Cool bass vibe

Damn. "Run Charlie Run" completely smacks my gob. Hell of a message, and the music is *tight*. "Do Your Thing" needs to become one of my theme songs. The whole album has a socially conscious message that I really dig. It's a beautiful album. Not full of singles, but full of luscious tracks that I want to float away on.

Funky, soulful album that remains interesting throughout. Papa was a rollin' stone is a great song that sounds like crazy train could've borrowed from its bass line. Love woke my up this morning is a pleasant song.

Some good grooves throughout in this one.

I'm digging the long, atmospheric Papa Was A Rollin' Stone with its simple bass line. On the other side, I Ain't Got Nothin' and The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face scratch the same itch. Has a certain timeless quality to it.

A nice change of pace from what we've been getting recently! Some of the songs I've definitely heard before, but others are new to me, which is always nice; some of the songs, though, didn't do much for me (looking at you, "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"). I don't really think of the Temptations as being particularly political (which may be more ignorance on my part than reality), but "Run, Charlie, Run" was a great contradiction to that impression--made me think of something like Parliament's "Chocolate City". And nice to have a pure Temptations album! Could have been a 3 for somewhat uneven song choices, but I enjoy their sound more than a 3....

Papa Was a Rollin' Stone is such a vibe.

Great funk album from a legendary group. This was perfect for the car ride I was on.

I really enjoyed this album despite not expecting to! I figured the Temptations would be old-timey enough that I'd move right along, but there were some seriously funky beats in this album!

classic 70's motown

Very classic disco.

Funky 70's Temptations at it's best. Papa is a great jam tune. Some social commentary added for flavor. A little dated, but still cool.

Papa was a rolling stone. Totally appreciated and victim of whole stars. Easily 3.5. I’ll give a 4

This sounds like the soundtrack to a Fat Albert caper in NYC. Gritty and funky. “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” is a highlight. I also hear the inspired connection of shoo boo shoo bop on “I Ain’t Got Nothin’” with the Fugees 1996 song “Zealots”. I love it!

Papa was a rolling stone is such a banger.

Great album. I knew a lot of the songs beforehand and didn't know they came from the same album. Super enjoyable. F.song : Papa was a rolling stone

excellent!

Looooved the first half which was faster/funky. Second half was a bit slower... Otherwise would've been a five star! Opening track is amazing.

Nice chilled album

Real good album. I like how big each song sounds, lots of space even though there's a lot going on with a lot of different instruments. Some really simple but great guitar lines. Definitely something I’d play again.

I'm sure it's gpod

Un classique.

je reviens comme une petite fleur

Great!

Lekker man meer funk please

Papa is 10 mins of utter brilliance, and elsewhere there's some sold seventies pop-funk backing it up. The sun was slightly setting on the all-covers soul ensemble, and their versions of Do Your Thing and The First Time Ever are a bit bloodless. Overall 3.5, feeling generous, rounded up.

I never got into The Temptations all that much, so this was a very pleasant and pleasurable experience. I much prefer the funky and fiery songs on the album, and the first side absolutely smokes. It tapers off a bit on side 2, but picks back up again with the last 2 tracks. The vocals are simply amazing. Great record. Favorite tracks: Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On, Run Charlie Run, Papa Was a Rollin' Stone, Mother Nature, Do Your Thing.

Quintessential Motown. I love their vocal harmonies. Will definitely listen again when the mood strikes me

Really solid album. loved the vocal dynamics and the instrumental dynamics. no real major problems

Listen initially in the car but didn't click. Listen at home with the big headphones and enjoyed the rhythm a lot more. Good album

Really great. Groovy, emotional, and seductive.

Heerlijke funk! Kende Pap was a rolling stone al, echt zo'n lekker nummer 😍 Would buy!

Excellent vocal performances and arrangements, and the sprawl of "Papa" among a collection of solid 3ish minute songs is interesting. The mixing on the opening track had me thinking my headphones were broken at first. Highlights: Papa Was A Rollin Stone, I Ain't Got Nothin, Mother Nature, Do Your Thing

This was very nice. Loved papa was a rolling stone, funky music, mother nature, do your thing.

6 / 10 Mezcla de estilos Motown años 70.

nice classic groovy r&b

Always loved the album version of Papa Was a Rolling Stone. The rest of the songs are very good also

Love the Temptations. Heard some songs I'd not heard before. Surprised to hear the n-word in some of these older songs, I thought that was a more recent rap trend.

Soooo good

oh hey i HAVE heard things on here before! the instrumentation is great though sometimes the mixing on the vocals is a little odd. excellent strings

Classic Motown.

4.1 - Great tunes, didn't realise papa was a rolling stone was so long. Very much enjoyed

It was fun and entertaining

Classic Motown

Like moving room to room at a really edgy 70s house party.

Golden oldies early 1970s soul.

Really dig the saxaphone and general funk to this one. Temptations have always been one that I like returning to when I feel like I need to move a little.

Smooth as silk! Love this album...classic early 70's R&B with just a touch of funk. This album and this group certainly set the path for the groups that followed them.

Surprisingly enjoyed this one

It was more low key and less upbeat than I was expecting.

Did not know they were this good. Always thought they were a do whop band.

Any album with papa was a rolling stone gets at least a 2 in my book. This was surprisingly good the whole way through. A more soulful temptations than I was expecting. What can I say? Funky music sho nuff turns me on.

Amazing classic. Really transformed music and nostalgic 70s vibe

Had not listened to more than 1-2 songs by the Temptations before, but very pleasantly surprised by this one! Super funky.

Groovy. Really liked Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone

The Temps break bad, and find their opus as a group. Double it up with Curtis Mayfield's Curtis for a one-two punch.

Pretty good way to start a new year

Papa Is A Rollin' Stone is a timeless classic. I'm not used to hearing The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face sung by a man. It's not bad, but I prefer it from a woman. Overall it's a quite good album.
