Reviews (page 4 of 8)

Very good, energetic, tight punk rock from the 1970s that sounds still fresh, and ahead of their time - if someone said it was released in the early 2000s I'd believe them! Great stuff.

Never heard of this album. Love the first track. The rest is early punk and just some good old rock and roll. This sounds like the Clash but better.

Punk Ramones and much better songwriters than them. I didn't feel like I was listening to the same song over and over again.

Although it's not something i've listened to before and will very no doubt ever listen to again this is vintage 1977 Punk/New wave. Great vibe and energy. Authentic stuff.

Very solid punk album

Good, fun, 70's Brit punk. Feels like the Clash at times, Ramones at others. Don't want to drag them down to just a comparison of familiar bands of the era, they are listenable all on their own.

MANNEQUINNNN

I've listened to this album a few times now and I keep coming back to it. It does however become a little repetitive and I can't over-listen to punk or the vocals induce a headache. I hear a lot of elastica in it (or vice versa) which I love. For me mannequin is the obvious stand out- it sounds like it could’ve been made today by some indie band- well ahead of their time with that sound. favourites: "Three Girl Rhumba", "start to move", "Mannequin" skips: none

Cool British punk.

Fun and surf rocky, solid album all the way through. Would be good for…idk putting on in the background while playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3?

How have I never heard of Wire?!? They are fantastic

Entertaining, interesting, and not straightforward punk album.

A little dissappointing, ok punk but nothing special

Another 4 star classic I have nothing to say about. It’s good!

1970s ... Punk ... loud ... quick ... simply as it should be :-)

There's something strange going on tonight There's something going on that's not quite right Joey's nervous and the lights are bright There's something going on that's not quite right There's something going down that wasn't here before Keep your eyes so screwed to the floor No one's gonna save your life There's something going on that's not quite right Not bad. 4/5

Many of these songs are ideas that don’t outstay their welcome. The album is great. Favorite songs were Mannequin, Three Girl Rhumba, Pink Flag, and Fragile.

I had never heard of this band or this album before. I'm amazed that it came out in 1977. It still stands up today! There were definitely standouts like 3 Girls Rhumba and Ex Lion Tamer. Some of it even reminded me of Fugazi during casual listens. I'm definitely going to give this one some more plays.

Another previously unknown band that I'm going to deep dive.

Never heard this album before but really like it.

Me: Why did you give Supergrass a 1-star but you like Pink Flag My Brain: ...

I always wondered why I was drawn to Wire when I first heard them, beyond the start/stop crisp riffs and deceptively simple songwriting, and then I realized that a half dozen different genres that I love — from post-hardcore like Quicksand and Helmet to britpop like Elastica to that entire Minutemen/Black Flag scene to nearly the entirety of what would eventually become the "post punk" MTV revolution — all sprouted from its loins. This album rules, but it's also a bit longer than it needs to be. Love Wire, but don't always love a full album of Wire.

Rating: 9/10 Amazing album. This is punk that is so refreshing to listen to, very groovy, catchy, and interesting. The classic punk tempo is prevalent throughout, especially on the shorter songs, but the riffs and vocal melodies that are incorporated are so creative that no two songs feel redundant or repetitive. The longer songs are all fantastic, they were normally slower in tempo and very groovy. Overall, this album is incredibly catchy and fun to listen to; very close to being five stars, I think there are just a few too many of the short songs for me to give it a five but that may change with time. Favorite songs: Reuters, Three Girl Rumba, Ex Lion Tamer, Lowdown, It's So Obvious, Pink Flag, Mr. Suit, Strange, Fragile, Mannequin, Champs, 12 X U. Worst songs: 106 Beats That, Different to Me.

Stunning and very influential album.

My first thought was 21 songs! But then I realised it was only 35 minutes long :) Not listened to this before and enjoyed this. A good punk album and you can see the influence it had on some more recent bands

Brilliant! Some of the tracks went on a bit though 🙂

I honestly thought we'd already had this album, then I remembered that we'd at Elastica a while back, and I'd checked out this album because of the Three Girl Rhumba/Connection. It's a good punky album, not too aggro, quite accessible - the short runtime helps too. Enjoyed it!

Heck yeah. That's the lowdown! Solid debut by a seminal band with some great tunes on it (ex-lion tamer, mannequin). Their recent stuff is more consistent, though I like the two different sounds they have (earlier v later)

I can’t believe I’ve never heard this before. You can hear the influence this had on so many bands. I also had no idea REM’s Strange was a cover.

This one fills in a gap in my musical education. Because I wasn't familiar with Wire, and yet I can hear so many bands that I *do* know in their music and specifically this album. 1977?? My goodness this is innovative.

I liked the sounding to it but I feel like others did a better job with the genre. Still beats a lot of albums so 4

I actually didn’t immediately like this one as much as I thought I would. There's a lot of stuff going on here. On more listens there's a lot to like. I really like the driving momentum of the title track. There's some crunchy / spacey experimentation happening, like on Strange. Good guitar tone on the right setup! I like Ex Lion Tamer and Mannequin, catchy stuff. I wish this was more a cohesive experience, but I guess that's the point? 4/5

Fun British punk album, good mixing too. 4.1

the original waves of punk/post-punk were so rich and diverse

4.3 One of the best post punk albums, before post punk was even a thing. Fucking iconic. Fave songs: Mannequin, Ex Lion Tamer, Reuter

What a banger record, I would be into a band that put this out yesterday, so I definitely think it’s cool that this came out in 1977. I really like the track Strange, probably my favorite on the album.

Really enjoyed this. I'd heard the name but never dived in. I'm delighted I started at the start and it will allow me to work though everything in order. This sounded to me like a mix of the clash and gang of four. Short sharp scuzzy and very good. A new fan.

Even though I feel punk is very monotone, I liked this album a lot. It’s short songs and Good riffs created a very unique experience. I definitely feel more ready to listen to more of this genre and I feel like this is a very good takeaway for this album.

I can see this is a important root for the punk and new wave movements

This was a solid punk album. I like the short snippets of energy. I wouldn’t say it was groundbreaking, but of course that’s from my 2023 perspective.

A surprise as I hadn't heard this band before but a really solid album from the early punk era

Really good punk record. Not really what I expected.

Respectful punk/post-punk. Easy to enjoy

D'humeur à récompenser les albums courts

Amazing post punk album, never gets old.

21 songs in 35 mins? Now we're talking! Loud and fast and doesn't outstay its welcome -- this is punk at its finest!

Was fun !

I can't believe this was originally released in 1977; I would have believed it was a punk album from 2005. Maybe the fact that it was remastered in 2006 has something to do with that, but still. Gotta say I liked it. My tastes tend to lean pop-punk and alt-rock, but this was pretty good. I liked it much more than the Sonic Youth stuff we've gotten thus far.

During one of my listens I seriously through the record was finished and auto-play started a Breeders song. I really enjoyed hearing the roots of so much of the punk and early 90s alt rock tracks. It pays to remember the progenitors.

Very innovative punk for its time. Songs still really hold up and deliver a unique experience

Loving all these 30 min albums. And no second is wasted, exactly why I love them. This thing is packed with energy and give you rapid fire of straight bangers. The interlude on track 2 let me know this album was gonna be dope. Pretty sure Nirvana took inspiration from "The Commercial" for "Drain You" on Nevermind.

Fire. Can’t really tell which songs are my favorite, but I’ll keep listening to this one. Quick listen as well. I also like the way they combine short and normal length tracks. Best: mannequin, ex lion tamer, field day for the sundays

Another hidden (from me) influence on much of the music I enjoy. Great punk listen.

"Pink Flag" by Wire is a seminal post-punk album that redefined the boundaries of punk rock. Released in 1977, it's a concise and minimalist masterpiece that features 21 tracks in just over 35 minutes. Tracks like "12XU" and "Three Girl Rhumba" exemplify the album's brevity and angular guitar work. The album's production is deliberately lo-fi, adding to its raw and urgent energy. Its succinct songwriting and fragmented lyrics reflect a departure from punk's conventional song structures. "Pink Flag" is an avant-garde work that challenged punk's norms and laid the foundation for post-punk and art-punk movements. While it might not be as immediately accessible as other punk albums, its influence and innovation in the genre are undeniable, making it a vital piece of punk rock history. 4/5

I never heard of Wire and I immediately recognized how influential they were. When I heard “Three Girl Rhumba” I immediately thought of Elastica’s “Connection.” I was shocked to hear “Strange” and realize this was not an REM song. They covered Wire! I’m a fan now!

Track one has a pronounced deccelerando; track ten has an accelerando. Both reminded me how rare they are in rock, and how thrilling they can be. Really damn good punk. (Post punk?) Like everyone else, Three Girl Rhumba made me jump out of my chair.

Fantastic

Very early post-punk. It somehow sounded both raw, and smoothed out. You could almost hear Joy Division in a couple tracks. I wish there were some more intensity, and could do without the poppier elements, but it's a good album nonetheless. On the fence between 3 and 4 stars, I'll round up.

Banger

This is not the Smiths. Closer to the Clash or Sex Pistols. I like this. I’ve got a soft spot for this type though.

i love when british people try to speak and they are just utterly incoherent. this is also a great punk album but i was more preoccupied with that first bit Favorite Tracks: Field Day for the Sundays, Surgeon's Girl, Mannequin 4-4.5/5

Def dig the early punk vibe - this whole record feels very authentic to me. I dug the 'zero waste' approach to arrangement also This blurb from the book felt perfect: “with the band grinding to a halt once they had run out of lyrics or had become tired of repeating a riff or hook” The last section of the record esp was really great - I think 1 2 X U might have been my favourite track on the whole record.

I think it's a little strange that this was listed as "post punk" when it came out just a year after the start of the punk era. However, I understand its long term influence on music that came after. Take an iconic 90s song like "Connection" by Elastica for example. I liked the short vignettes, and overall it worked quite nicely!

I didn't have much hope for this from the description, and the first track didn't give me high expectations that my opinion would change...but then I found kind of enjoying many of the tracks. There were still a few tracks that I could have done without, but they were generally short which made them tolerable. An extra bump for surprising me.

Fantastic discovery! Probably one of the best produced, thoughtful and artistic punk albums I've ever heard, certainly from the 1st wave. Well done generator, well done...

I get this is an important album. Not really my thing. I enjoy it in doses.

I enjoyed the vibe.

Fantastic punk rock album, really enjoyed the quick punchy songs.

first listen man not my style...BUT the guitar and bass tones are so insanely dirty for 1977

High Energy album. Made me feel like I had Too much caffeine.

Now THIS is punk. True, pure, original punk. Not my cup of tea, but a truly original and awesome album! Got 4 stars because I like the energy, but a tad bit repetitive for me.

Today's album was an early punk record from the late 70's. Before today, I'd never heard of Wire. To me, they sound very similar to Minor Threat, Buzzcocks, and the Clash, but they are a bit heavier in both sound and vocal delivery. Apparently Wire is one of the bands credited with starting the subgenre of hardcore punk. This makes sense, because their songs are high energy, fast, loud, and the vocals are mostly shouted. All of this coalesces into an amazing punk record! It took me a while to get used to the singer's accent, so the first few songs, I had no idea what he was saying. Once you get an ear for it, however, it becomes easier to grasp. The band members are all masters of their craft. The guitars and drums are fast as hell! Overall, an excellent intro to hardcore punk. Apparently Wire was a hard band to nail a genre to, because for each album released, they changed their sound. That shows real talent, because not a lot of people can successfully genre shift like that. I liked this so much today, I listened to it twice. Some of the songs I wish were a bit longer (like the 28 seconds song called Field Day for the Sundays), but this is a very punk rock move to have fast, short songs, and get an album over and done with in under a half hour. Actually, by punk standards, this 35 minute album is probably a long one. Favorite songs: Mr. Suit, Mannequin, 12XU, Strange, Surgeon's Girl, Pink Flag, Fragile, Ex Lion Tamer, Reuters, Three Girl Rhumba, Straight Line, Different to Me Least favorite songs: if forced to pick, Lowdown 4/5

Very fun album

This is great driving music! I absolutely loved this. I generally dig a lot of punk and have been a lot more hit and miss with post-punk, but this one really tickles me in great ways! I love how much is going on throughout the songs and album, but how cohesive it remains. I can see how some may find the vocals a bit abrasive but they work for me. The rhythm section slays throughout and there are some really fun harmonies. On initial listen I generally dig the lyrical content as well.

Great and pink

Best wel goed voor een vroeg punkalbum. Ik kende dit nog niet

This was excellent, great punk, a pioneer for sure. But I wouldn't listen regularly.

One of the all time great post-punk records. A classic and always a great listen.

Today we have another band I hadn’t heard of before. Google tells me that Wire are a bit post-punk, a bit Britpop, and a bit punk. That seems like a fairly promising combination to me, so let’s listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Three Girl Rhumba I had to look up Three Girl Rhumba after listening because it sounds remarkably similar to Connection by Elastica. Apparently there was a lawsuit that was settled out of court. Makes sense. This album was good fun and I quite enjoyed it overall. That older type of punk where it’s mainly shouting and chanting tends to be a bit hit and miss with me, and although this does fall into that category, it was mostly hits for me. Overall, a good punk album that I’m happy to have experienced!

I definitely dig the old school punk. Somehow I’d never stumbled on this album but I’m glad I have now!

Just a really sick punk album. You can hear how influential it was on post-punk and hardcore. I really enjoyed it.

‘Wire’ is art rock masquerading as a punk album, with its influence later popping up in the alt rock, hardcore, grunge and even brit-pop genres. Everything hangs together nicely considering many songs are no more than mere sketches and are over before they get started. Short and sharp, it still sounds fresh today.

Fun album. Fun band. So far ahead of the curve that 3 songs into an early punk album they’re already bored and off somewhere else pioneering post punk.

Red flag for danger. White flag for surrender. Pink flag for watch out I’m giving up = punk.

I first attempted to listen to this while reading through some training for work and that was not working out. I can definitely see how this album was very influential to later punk and post-punk bands. I don't know if it's something I would go out of my way to listen to a lot but I'm glad I heard it. I also had the chance to listen to it with the lyrics from Apple Music turned on and I think that helped. I'd probably give this one a 3.5. I will probably round up in my official rating on the website.

Dope-Ass post-punk energy. Lots of fun.

I enjoyed this album. Not all songs were there for me, but I found myself "Thumbs Up" more than not. 4 stars.

Here is where unpolished vocals shine! when accompanied by grungy guitar! I can get behind this! That was fun, wasn't the most interesting thing ever, but I would listen again in the right party space.

Definitely enjoyed listening to it, very motivational

Surprising production fun album

Very interesting picking out the influences on British bands of the 90s. Great punk sounds.

Enjoyed this album

This is probably one of the best, if not the best album to come out of the punk era. Punchy, snotty, tightly wound, gloriously fast moving. This album probably launched a hundred bands. Fave Songs: Mannequin, Surgeon's Girl, Reuters, Lowdown, Pink Flag, Field Day for the Sundays

I really like this album and not sure why it I never came across it till a few years ago.

Post punk / punk that is deceptively complex despite being “3 chord” rock. Great classic record.

Great. Feels like i should have already listened to it. 1 2 X U is the stand out track for me.

This album is great. The whole band has such a great energy and there isn't a dull moment in the entire album. My only complaint would be that there's 21 songs in this 35 minute album. My rating: 9/10 Need to be on this list: 9/10

i literally listened to this yesterday and got it generated today lol

Enjoyed this. I generally like punk except for the common punk thing where the lyrics devolve into unintelligible shouting. There are a few songs on here that do that

An early example of British punk outside of the “oi” genre more Clash than Pistols. From top to bottom this is the type of album your favorite punk band had on repeat.

This British Punk debut is notable not only for the sounds, but the style. Fast, peppy songs where it isn't out of place to have those sub-minute thrashers. This set up future artists, and exemplified the musical movement as more than the commercial Clash.

Not one's thing to be honest, but this is a far sight better than quite a few other punk records here, thanks to the cool attitiude, hookiness and brevity of most of these cuts. One thinks it's okay to prefer REM's version of "Strange." That cut triggers the best run of the album – "Fragile" and "Mannequin" are especially good.

I really enjoyed this. A stripped down punk energy and snarkiness that is fun from start to finish. None of the tracks overstay their welcome and there's enough variation that it stays interesting.

With punk I often feel like the entire album is a lot of the same, but not with this one. Many of the tracks are very short, but it's a very fun album.

Excellent spiky stuff

I haven't listened to this before, but it reminds me of other things I like such as Adam and the Ants from around the same time (before Malcolm McLaren stole the Ants). Solid top to bottom.

Ah taj dobar stari punk rock

Punk Rock with enough texture and variety to more than deserve a 21 piece tracklist.

A powerful and awesome punk album, although you can start to notice how in this era most of these bands were starting to migrate to the post-punk genre, which is not a bad thing at all!

smoko but more punk. short and sweet. very good for hype music

Really amazing

Plenty of impact, nice and short.

This album is short and sweet, a great classic punk album. Highlight of the album was Pink Flag.

Pretty fun album. Didn't grab me at first but got better as it went on. That is the Elastica riff right?

It’s good. I enjoyed it a lot as background music. It’s defs up my alley genre wise.

4.1 - Lots of superlatives are bandied about in praise of this record. I'm not steeped in its historical context and I generally disdain most lore surrounding punk rock (or in this case, "post-punk"). But judging this record based on its own merits, I do like it a lot. First, I appreciate the sharp clarity in the recording enhanced by its minimalism. Second, I love the scratchy and husky guitar sounds. Third, I like the poetry and braininess of the lyrics. Fourth, I love that the 21 songs bounce from one idea to the next, most in under 2 minutes. Standouts: "Strange", "Three Girl Rhumba" (Elastica lifted that opening riff), "Reuters", "Brazil."

Fun punk album with lots of short ideas for songs that somehow add up to a great album.

Can hear Fugazi and At the Drive-in in this which I enjoyed

A pleasant surprise, wish some of the songs were longer

How have I never heard this before? Such consistent, raw tone, switching from stripped down to orchestral in size. Really fun and exciting.

Geiles Album! Hat richtig Spaß gemacht.

7/10. It's always refreshing listening to albums where all of the songs are short, good for variety. The music itself was pretty good, too, though I think it would've worn on me if it had gone on longer.

I'm glad to have listened to this after listening to some of the other short-form hardcore/post-hardcore on this list. It made it easier to draw a line from this album's influence onto future genres, and I think made me appreciate it more. 7/10

Have heard of Wire many many times and never listened. Great punk band. Really enjoyed.

4/5. I liked it a fair bit. They sounded a bit like the Ramones which I liked. Up beat and quick. A lot of English Pop/Rock albums so far.

Solid punk album

I’d never heard of this band, but totally recognized the riff Elastica copied. Fun record!

I'm starting to think if I were born in the 70s I would have been a punk kid.

Another example of re-listening to something that was on RS500 and appreciating it more the second time around

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Ex-lion tamer

Great punk

This is an album that will stay on high rotation for a while

yah cool

Great album - really holds up almost 50 years later.

Some creative early punk, I can see how it would be very influential. The lightest of 4s

I was with it

4.1 - This album always feels ahead of it’s time. The minimalism comes off as clean and modern. No fat punk. Fragile and Lowdown are great, and Strange was a bit of a discovery for me on this listen.

Short quick and groovy great punk 🔥

Punk-rock setentero.

Ganske bra + For three girl rhumba

precursors to lots of stuff

Amazing to think they were making this as punk was also about The Damned and The Pistols.

Brilliant stuff here.

Raw and punky, some really catchy grooves on this record

I knew 12XU as a Minor Threat song. Live and learn eh? Cool stuff

Good sound, solid album. I cannot recall hearing them before but I do like the album and would listen again.

Really solid punk/post-punk album. Some hardcore riffs, and some melodic bits. Enjoyed the punk yelling.

A riotous punk album and such a confident debut, what a class record

Classic.

Wow, what a fun ride that was. 21 songs in just over half an hour, and each one a joyful vignette of punk simplicity.

I took a while to get into it, but I like the Ramones feel but with a spooky edge.

Believe the hype. This album schools.

Petites píldores subversives, ja poden ser melòdiques ('Mannequin'), polítiques ('Reuters'), sarcàstiques ('Field Day for the Sundays') o pròpiament cançons del moment ('Strange').

21 songs filled me with dread at first. 35 minutes later and it was all over. I played Pink Flag for a second time. Intelligent and dumb - exactly how I like my guitar music. I had no idea that REM's Strange was a Wire cover. This is the very decent album that Elastica never made.

Nice sound. This time I looked up some history about it, so I was better located while listening to it. I felt like listening to punk and post punk a bit more. I liked it but wasn't able to listen to the whole album before taking these notes.

Glanced at the tracklist, though it was another too long album... then heard it qnd wished it was longer. Im presuming that elastica paid them some royalties...

Zogezegd intelligente punk.

Nice UK style Punk Rock

Interesting.

punk rock

True head bobbin' shit right here. Bunch of short, quick songs to put a pep in your goddamn step. Brit punk for the win.

Enjoyed this one after never listening to The Wire in the past. Fun album. For being a post-punk progenitor I was slightly surprise on how "punk" this sounded. 4/5

A good call to arms punk style record

Super fun record somewhere between punk and post-punk. Just a tight set of songs, in, punk, out. Favorite tracks: "Three Girl Rhumba", "Ex Lion Tamer", "Lowdown", "Strange"

Punk-rock setentero.

not bad

Pure punk!

Yes enjoyed it a lot good old fashioned early punk. Never really heard them before so a great discovery

Solid. Never a bad time for this album. I love the guitar tones on it.

Puro punk fino.

Definitely bridges that gap between punk rock and the beginnings of New Wave. It's good shit.

pretty solid, good funk

Personally loved it. Some good punk vibes, a few dope songs I will listen to again. Worked well with my poopy butt

Grew on me over the weekend.

Punk classic, so influential, and doesn't diminish with time.

LOOOOVE IT! Great punk album

A more polished late 70's punk album. Akin to what Green Day did for late 80's punk. I'm happy I listened to it, but I probably won't again. That's probably the source of the divide between its critical success vs its commercial success.

The band sounds the best when it goes to the darker realms of post-punk and alternative. Reuters and Pink Flag are the best from the first side.

Field Day for the Sundays и Brazil не зашли

Really enjoyed this, liked the short songs and the dirty guitars. My favorite tracks were "Pink Flag" and "Strange." Interested to hear more of this band now.

Raw as they come

Great tunes!

Good. I usually don't enjoy punk, but this album was very enjoyable. I also really like the album art.

Excellent, zips along, nothing outstays it's welcome.

Really intense harmonics and likable sound from a punk-band. Short tracks that not all sound the same. (7/10) Favorite Tracks: Mannequin, 12xU, Three Girl Rhumba

Actually pretty listenable, rocky sound

Certainly not the kind of music I listen to normally, but I actually found it somewhat enjoyable for what it was.

Not bad, kinda fun

It's punk. Loud and free.

Destaco a música Pink Flag, a Fragile e o Reuteurs. Atibuo assim um 7 de 10. Nota: 7/10 Data 17/01/2025

Selbstbewusst vorgetragene Shiceegalness, eine erfreuliche Haltung.

all these remastered versions. hope its pretty instrumental or todays gonna be long. Surprisigly decent. maybe a 4?

Cool punk album.

New to me, enjoyed it alot

Erm... well, it was good. I listened to it this morning, but my day has been rather broccoli heavy to be honest. Everything else has taken a backseat. 🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦

Wire rules

pretty good

I hadn't ever heard of this band but from the notes it sounds like that's not surprising. The album definitely holds up!

Great roots punk, gotta admit I wasn't aware of this band, but it was surprisingly enjoyable. These guys should've been more famous.

Not really into it, but it seems like “good” punk

Such a cool album! Never heard of it before. It'll definitely be one I return to!

Quick with good vibes. Some absolute bangers like Ex Lion Tamer. Definitely added to my personal playlists.

Good album, heard some 90’s sounds coming through.

I wasn't expecting much after looking at the wikk but I was pleasantly surprised. It's a very solid pop punk album.

Wire don't muck about. It's crazy that this came out in 1977. Way way ahead of its time. I wish I could be this economical.

Fun album

Punk is good.

fantastic sound but so many short filler songs

A little lighter and earlier punk. I have to think of this sound happening next to the Brady bunch and Elvis, rather than more modern music. It really inspired so much.

Good ol punk album

Solid early punk sounds

Pretty frickin cool

Ha! I kind of enjoyed the this. This is a band I would see live because it would be such a good time.

This one was strange to me right off the bat. The number of songs compared to the runtime threw me off guard completely... 21 songs with a 35-minute runtime made me really curious about how the album was going to work, and what the creative decision behind this was. I think, as a whole, I wasn't a huge fan of this album, but that isn't saying I thought it was bad. Nothing really interested me much, that's all. I did enjoy the shorter tracks to break up the album, but when there are only around 4 tracks long enough to be counted as a full song, the rest of the album just kind of seems like a load of unfinished ideas rather than anything solid. I'm sure that the shorter tracks were intentional from the start when planning this album, but to me, it doesn't come across as polished. Stand-outs: Mannequin Brazil Fragile

Decent early punk. Probably somewhere between a 3 and 4 for me.

Not a bad album, but not one i'll revisit anytime soon, not really my cup of tea even considering how influencial it was

There's some great stuff on here, and it was clearly influential, but I also feel like many of these are so short they leave no impression on me.

This was a good listen. Punkish but way more polished than I would have expected. Like they could play their instruments. Guessing bands like REM among others were influenced by them. It’s fine.

Not bad

According to my summary page I quite like punk music. Not if this album is anything to go by. Lots of short songs and musical ideas. No idea what the lyrics are at all. Perhaps that is the aim but then the music is not good enough to carry that for me. Nearly gave it 2/5 but was feeling generous today. Rather listen to this than the R&B pap that I was fed yesterday.

I can hear a lot of bands that came later in this album. Its influence is all over post-punk and alternative rock, and it's easy to see why so many artists point back to it. It's one of the better post-punk albums I've heard on this list. While it's not completely my preferred style of music, I appreciate that it knows exactly what it is. The songs are short, direct, and never overstay their welcome. That is probably the album's greatest strength. Even when a song doesn't fully connect, another one is just around the corner. It's a smart, influential record that I enjoyed more than I expected.

a little repetitive, but the highs stand out quite a bit. reminded me of ramones self titled kinda.

Punk was probably a lot cooler before punk was a thing

Much of Pink Flag's first two thirds, except for longer songs, sounds like secondary material, some demo recordongs which would be better combined into more finished works or, perhaps, the group cold make it a 2-3-track album with long 10-minute songs. But they took this approach, and honestly it somewhat ruined the listening experience. The beginning is dominated by the guitarist, while the vocals sound underwhelming. Ex Lion Tamer, title song, Strange, along with Feeling Called Love, are the better tracks. Most of them are the longest ones, and Wire do put up some experimental or unconventional elements there wich at times really work. Later on, the songs feel more balanced and overall well done, however this feeling of incompleteness with much of material leaves Pink Flag with three stars.

#165/1001 🇬🇧 I was 3 months old when this was released and i have a theory that the best albums are the ones that came out the year you were born and the year you turned 17. This very enjoyable, quick fire tracks with an angular sound. Undoubtedly influential on a great many bands who came afterwards. Best Tracks: Three Girl Rhumba, Mannequin, Ex Lion Tamer.

It was alright, just alright I dig it.

My expectations were low, but this was better than I expected. A lot of punk from this era blends together for me, but this stands out slightly.

The average track on this album clocks in under 1:42, so it flies by even with 21 songs. It's kind of a fun gimmick, but I think it wears out its welcome before even this album's short runtime comes to an end. It's good energy, but I'm not huge on this album. Favorite track: probably "Mannequin," once again one of the longest songs on the album!

Not much of a fan of punk music but by the last track, I was actually enjoying it.

Short, sharp, punchy post-punk record. An influential record and it’s not hard to hear why. 3.5/5

Hadn’t heard of these guys, another solid addition to the late 70s punk lineup on this list. 3.6

The album reminded me of Ramone’s album without the hooks.

Me senti um jovem Supla all yeah baby!

This is a lot like the Circle Jerks album that I ended up liking a ton, but with way less personality. Nothing here is bad, but it's just all there, and that's it. It exists. I liked Mannequin the most, but there was nothing else here that really inspired or interested me.

Noise af

Too raw for me, but some great bones here. (As shown by R.E.M.'s amazing cover of Strange.)

Lost a little bit of steam in the back half but this was a fun listen and one that’s genuinely hard to believe came out in 1977. Also all those 30 second songs were amazing to me. Did Wire invent TikTok clips?

This might be a rare case where I lean upwards on an album because of how early on it was. This feels like it could be the precursor and inspiration for every punk album that followed. And like so many of them, I have no idea what he's saying. But I enjoyed. I particularly liked the punk yell "Un deax trois go!"

I finished this album and honestly did not even realize I was listening to it. That's not really a bad thing; it evoked pleasant background emotions.... 3.49.

No worries about this album being too long. But nothing really stands out, either. It's funny how quaint some early punk sounds after 50 years.

Gave me the clash vibes. Bad to work to but fun to listen to

I remember this album cover from my dad's rolling stone 500 greatest albums poster and the cover is badass. The album is fine!

Cool. Not my style, but cool for what it is - old school punk stuff

There were a couple of standout tracks in this record. It was also short and sweet. Favourite Track(s): Pink Flag, 106 Beats That Least Favourite Track(s): Lowdown, Surgeon's Girl, Fragile

Hailed as a classic but never grew on me

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from an album and band I've never heard of, and I guess I was neither impressed nor disappointed. More punk-oriented than I'd prefer--garage-quality production, too-short track lengths to get things moving, etc.--but as a punk-ish album I definitely preferred it to others, especially since I could usually understand (and sometimes enjoy) what they had to say and play. And funny to hear small bits that were recycled later, often more effectively; the best example is "Three girl rhumba", which Elastica did to perfection on "Connected" two decades later; I feel like other tracks like "106 beats that" and "Strange" have similar promise, although I didn't see any covers mentioned. Perhaps not a backwater per se, but this definitely feels like an experiment that didn't get many followers, although I can also see why Husker Du's Greg Norton considered this one of his favorite punk albums.

Moze być

A very typical punk album. I like it but I don't flock to it.

This is really impressive for 1977, you can see the influence and it's a cool album to experience as a historical piece. I wish I liked it a bit more. It's good, but with 21 songs and only a 34 minute run time it struggles to get any of those songs to stick.

probably wont come back to this much. maybe discovering i'm not a huge punk fan. that being said, it's crunchy sludgy and fun! pretty astounding that it came out in '77.

I hate to be that nerd that goes "oh, but the production 🤓" to some punk music, but the guitars are very loud in the mix and sound like they were recorded on tin cans. Apparently the lyrics are very dry, snarky, and political beat poetry type stuff but I wouldn't know because I think the only lyrics I could make out were the la-la-la's on Mannequin. The album does have a lot of interesting ideas, the songs are really tight, I do kind of enjoy it, and it sounds like it would go hard live, but oh the production... 🤓

A set of short, direct, punchy punk tracks. I really enjoy the guitar tones on this record. However, many of the songs aren't super memorable in my opinion. The short song lengths don't really add up to much a lot of the time. I definitely see the appeal, it's just not for me.

Thought this was pretty good. Had a decent garage gritty sound. Had no clue Elastica lifted the riff on Three Girl Rhumba for their song, Connection. Neat stuff. 2.755

This feels like rapid fire visits to all of your friends on the same day. A very dense 38 minutes. But an enjoyable ride nonetheless.

Solid album. Did not do much for me.

The pure embodiment of the word "punk". Fast, brash, loud, angry. Very British. To the point I didn't understand a single word he sung. Biggest downside is repetition, however. With each track being so short and there being so many of them, it's hard to pick out favourites. Just as you're getting used to one track, it ends and you're thrust into another that sounds slightly different. 3/5

I didn't totally love this, but I fully understand why it's on this list.

Very old school Punk. I can hear where other bands drew influence from this. The cacophony is fun, but the album feels discordant. Probably a low 3 for me, but fun to listen none-the-less.

Alright. Pretty classic 70s. Nothing particularly bad but nothing amazing or innovative. Enjoyed it.

Classic punk

A good debut album with that 3 chord punk sound but with the hint of sonic sound lushiness.

36 minutes and 21 tracks, oh boy, I'm about to get electrocuted. Oh, not really. 3/5

tracks are quite short, like really REALLY short, for my preferences but not bad. fav track is mannequin.

Cockney? ✅ 500 songs in 20 minutes? ✅ Certified punk. ✅

Really punky punk.

It’s alright nothing in particular

Is this punk? Is this newave? I really had a difficult time categorizing this one. I didn't like it, but also didn't not like it.

Punk it's cool. Wire is the pioneer of the punk movement.

Fragile

Muy divertido, no conocía a la banda

More foundational British punk. How original. - TS

Can I get a translator? I’m not sure I picked up a single lyric on this album. Cool vibes tho

Fine little album. Not really my style but interesting

I don't recall this album being essential in the punk circles that I hung out in during the 80. , For us it was more about The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Joy Division, Black Flag, and thrash (when we all progressed into BMX free styling and skating) like Suicidal Tendencies, Anthrax, and early Metallica, but I don't deny that it probably was influential when it came out in 1977. It was long after this period that I graduated to listening to(end enjoying) jazz and electronica that showed off more sophisticated progressions and more interesting musical risks. Vocal performance is weaker than your typical punk album, particularly of the time. Instrumental performances are okay, at least for punk anyway, but even with short duration (2 minute-ish) songs, it becomes a bit tedious after 15 minutes or so. Given its hype, I was hoping for even more of an art rock influence to justify the proto post punk celebration of this album. I personally don't think they would have sounded like a nice pairing with circa 1978-1980 Talking Heads at all. To be it is largely just a standard old boring punk album. I acknowledge that it is possible that I might have enjoyed this more when I was a naive pre-teen or teen than I do as the middle aged person that I am now. Wanted to enjoy it more than I did, but probably won't feel compelled to play it again.

Doceniam rytmiczność kawałków i… tyle. 6/10

It's okay

Good album, Ex Lion Tamer & Mannequin are standout tracks.

Not bad. Certainly ahead of its time in 1977.

When I got to the end of this album, I was surprised to realise it was released in 1977. It really has that 90s maybe early 2000s grunge sound to it. I've never heard of the band before but it's definitely punk/grunge, wouldn't be surprised if they inspired a lot of that genre later in the 90s. Anyway, not really into grunge but it was an alright listen.

You can hear a lot of what britpop was influenced by but for some reason I can’t get into it

A bit of a mixed bag! Some songs I really enjoyed, others were shit. Hard to rate overall so will just bang it in the middle 3 ⭐️

I didn't hate it. That says alot for a punk band.
