Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Anothers 70s punk / garage rock album! Weird to get two so close together. It was decent- i liked the instrumentation in a lot of songs. Nothing really stoid out as a hit. I can see how fans of the genre would enjoy it
Pretty classic punk album. I've grown to like it more over the years.
Starting to realise that punk really isn't my cup of tea, can't really fault the album but it just doesn't tickle the pickle for me
A fun punk album packed with jammers, my kinda shit (3.5/5)
Musically I loved it more than most albums from this genre. Vocals pretty standard stuff though.
Some really good punk rock. I've listened to this before and yet didn't recognize too much of it. There aren't too many hooks. But I like the vocals and instrumentals. It's weakest point is there isn't much distinction between songs sometimes. Otherwise not bad. 3/5
3+
Not bad but the influence seems to greater than the sum of its merits and blandishments, which is to say one finds it to be slightly overrated particularly relative to its much ballyhooed influence (though one admits one didn't much know it and certainly didn't love it in real-time of release). The punchy raggedness makes for punk authenticity but does bludgeon-grate after a time. It gets steadily better as it goes. "Mannequin" is a great song, and the peak of the record, with "Strange" and "Fragile" the runners-up. Funny, how they ended up as synthy pop tunesmiths down the road ("Kidney Bingos," anyone?), following the Clash > Big Audio Dynamite trajectory to some extent. Despite the fact that REM (one of one's fave all-time bands) liked this record quite a bit, one can't quite convince oneself to round up.
Totally enjoyed the shortness of the songs—like a flight of punk. A little sample of each. Made it a lot more interesting that way. However, not since MmmBop have I heard such diction. No idea what he was saying most of the time. Still, not bad.
Fairly decent punk, loads of short songs which have their good and bad points - the good ones sadly end to early whereas the bad ones thankfully do. Can see this inspiring lots of bands so can understand it's inclusion.
70/100 As a whole a lot better than the individual songs. It just flows so nicely and is incredibly fun.
I actually just think punk makes me tired. I'm not sure why but it just sort of drains me. I can respect it and I don't hate it, but something about it just doesn't click with me. And this album is really no exception. There are some fun little moments with these short songs but I just don't find the energy to be all there. Fav songs: - Reuters
Nice, not angry.
Artsy side of punk but what does that even mean? The sound is very clear for its lust for fuzz. Voice seems a bit like mimicking a snotty attitude - not knowing they are THE original one could easily assume them to be a later released follow up act. But well…that‘s Happening often when you listen to ancestors which had been copied over the decades after them.
Early-ish punk. Catchy
Short energetic songs. It’s as if brit punk is a dialect I don’t understand, so I didn’t catch any of the lyrics the first time lol. But when I go back and look at them they’re not bad.
3.5
Never even heard of this band. Fun times and very influential.
Some good, fun punk songs on here. Unfortunately this is yet another album that's held back because the singer sounds like if a crumpet could talk
Somewhat unremarkable punk/rock album.
I'm not the biggest fan of really short songs (we get enough of that nowadays), but I love the energy of these songs! Old-school punk is great.
This was good but somehow Elastica ruined it for me. Elastica is good too, but you know what I mean.
3.5 Cool album, hardcore punk, no real standouts but a fun listen
not a fan of punk, but this was pretty decent.
What happens when punk gets soft? Pretty easy listening.
could i write poetry to this? maybe?
This is really good stuff. Their 1978 album Chairs Missing is probably a 5 star. This one is a high 3, low 4.
Quiro!
I think I need to give this one another listen. Maybe with the lyrics in front of me. It’s good sounding punk but nothing really grabbed me. Maybe I was just having an off morning.
A UK punk band I was not aware of. I'm not big on this style of music, but it was enjoyable enough. It had sounds which are not dissimilar to grunge, so would not surprise me if they were an influence on some bands. 3/5
They play music and have a decent sound. Three stars
Quick album. I sometimes missed the transition between songs. Upbeat punk album.
As far as mediocre british punk goes, this one was relatively enjoyable
it was good. Interesting to see some early punk influences. But ultimately it wasn't very memorable for me.
Energetic British punk. Fun album.
It is a very good album and I appreciate that it may have been original and influential, but it isn't quite dynamic enough to hit that next level of greatness for me.
A punk sound not to dissimilar to The Buzzcocks in my head. I had never heard of them, and nothing was a turnoff. A song I recognized as covered later by REM "Strange" is in the mix. Cool to hear it's original structure, which highlighted how bare bones this album was.
Pretty strong early punk. Could have gone a bit deeper on a few tracks here but appreciated the punchiness. Three and a half. Fave track: Champs
Three Girl Rhumba (2006 Remastered Version), comienza igual que la canción de Elastica.
It's fine.
Never heard of this but it was interesting.
It's good. I've often been underwhelmed by these 70s-80s post punk albums which is probably unfair as I'm coming at them with the benefit of hindsight and taking them for granted. You can hear the influence of this one in Ash and a lot of the 90s-00s guitar music I love, so it's great to experience it as part of that journey. I didn't quite love it though; the sound is great and I did enjoy the overall vibe but never quite found myself thinking I'd come back to it in any hurry.
It was ok
Cool 70s punk rock that’s actually listenable vs what much has sounded like on here. Nothing remarkable but the fuzz on the guitars is sublime.
Another 3
I started off not hugely impressed but my tolerance levels rose with each song. Not a bad bit of punkish rock.
This was fine, 21 songs in 35 minutes. Kept my interest for the most part
i would love to love this but a lot of the songs feel very samesy which isn’t a knock to its quality, but it makes listening to the whole record uninterrupted a little tiring.
Blimey, did every 90s english indie band listen to this. They should sue Blur especially. Enjoyed the fuzz but couldn't name a stand out tune. Maybe that's what they wanted. Still think post punk is an excuse for over artistic experiment instead of some cracking tunes.
está bien. correcto. okayyy
7/10
Decent. Had never heard it before.
Cool! I liked it, I was already familiar with Wire so I knew what I was getting into.
Late 70s influential British Punk band sounded like exactly what I figured it would sound like. Enjoyable, if you're in the mood for it.
First time hearing this. I like the Post more than the Punk but I'll be checking out more records from their discography
Short and to the point. I like the guitar work, but it lacks identity. Favorite track was Feeling Called Love
Pretty standard Punk offering, with some pop flavors and hints of Lou Reed. Cool name for a band though.
This was an easy album to listen to, but not a great album for me
Я не большой фан панк-рока, но тут в принципе мне было нормально. Интересный ритмический рисунок, грязненькие гитары. Ну троечка.
Stripped down 70s punk, at first it was a no, but it grew on me. Obvious to see how it influenced misfits, and way more.
this genre is so good that even if I don't like the album itself very much, it still makes me move
You can see the early days of punk in this album. Syncopated muddy guitars, wild drums, and a British singer singing his heart out. This is not my favorite music, but I do like the guitars and drums that provide cool background tracks for the wild verses. It is hard to rate this album too highly though because I did not like the singing. I think it sounded sloppy and off tune but then again, that is part of the style.
Cool album. Original punk!!
It was ok, better towards the second half of the album, I do enjoy very bare bones early punk though, especially at dive bars
Wire hold a peculiar place in rock history - they were always on the outer but still put out some great stuff. This has strands you can here in lots of music to follow (including of course Elastica)
Grunge all the way. But not sure what makes it stand out more than others of that time and era.
simpatico, ma non eccezionale
Fairly typical post punk rock with the exaggerated singing and shouting and endlessly repetitive riffs that make it almost hypnotic. And 21 songs in 32 minutes—now that’s rocking and rolling.
I like the ambient background stuff. Better than some other Brit-punk ...
Fairly generic punk, normally love this sort of thing, but felt a bit flat. That said i will remake this album.
So-so punk from back in the day. Three Girl Rhumba is in my playlist of maths songs!
The changing of the classic rock to punk very English punk sound
Me recordó mucho a The Ramones. Aunque no conocía ninguna canción, alguno de los riffs de guitarra y la batería me sonaban conocidos, por lo que imagino que habrán servido de referente a otros grupos posteriores
It’s good. But you. Ant listen too much of it.
decent. punk with early alternative vibes
Erm, it was kinda good but also didn't really leave an impression. 3/5
I’m sure this is very influential and pioneering as some kind of proto-post-punk but I’m not really into punk or post punk so don’t really care all that much. Not unpleasant.
A good album to listen to while reading.
Meh, might have been cooler when it came out in 77’.
No dilly dally here. It moves at a relentless pass. A refined rawness.
Classic
All of the tracks kind of meld together into one long track and there isn't much in the way of lyrics, but it was still enjoyable. I can see why this is an influential album. 3.75 stars, close to 4.
6/10 Sounds nice but no songs stand out
Ok, will not listen again.
I didn't know this type of punk music existed during the 70s. Cool! For that reason a 3
Never listened to much Wire although I know they're influential. Punks who could write. Very era-ish but still got something. 3.5?
I found some of the tracks unexpectedly interesting.
You can hear the influences and what it's influenced so much it sounds almost generic and early tracks make it feel like a parody of punk rather than anything more interesting. Dig a little deeper and there is much more to this, it has a daft number of tracks, many of them short enough to sound like ideas that didn't get finished and there's some interesting depth in that as you travel through, particularly when the energy levels change or they move further away from the standard punk style. Flawed but interesting.
Not bad, not very memorable though. I kept slipping off the end of the Spotify playlist and not realising.
Don't know how I didn't hear of this lot. Solid
#26. This is the second 70s British punk band that I've gotten this week that is supposedly pretty well known I have never heard of even once. I have decided though that I like Wire better than The Fall. Or at least I like this particular album better I liked the other anyway. It's definitely more punk-ish anyway. The songs are short, sweet, and to the fucking point. The songs are a little bit samey, but I guess that's true of the whole genre, and that's kinda the point, so it's hard to fault it for that. I would say that I liked it on the whole. 3/5: acceptable
I feel like I should like this album more than I do. This might just be a punk thing (especially early punk) because I feel like that happens a lot with this genre.
Punk rock. Liked some songs a lot will listen again.
Ok
Really enjoyed this. Want to check out more of their sound that was apparently always changing.
It’s fine and all but I couldn’t tell two of these songs apart if my life depended on it
How did I never hear of this band? I feel like a poser! They are good and hearing what they did in 1977 is definitely an indication that they were early influencers on in the punk/emo scene. That being said, I only mildly enjoyed it and likely would not listen to the album again.
It was fine. A little punk rock.
Manque de sel
This was fine. Nothing that particularly stood out or felt groundbreaking. My ADHD loved the short songs, though.
Not too shabby
3.75
Good punk. Not a huge amount to take away tho
Punk by numbers for me
Jesus this thing goes by fast. Some songs I liked but on the whole I could leave this album.
A number of these songs have clearly influenced some of the hits of decades past. Interesting to hear the early context of some of these riffs.
Du punk tres soft. Pas mauvais 6/10
Not bad.
I liked the vibe of the album it felt long to me for some reason but was chill
Short and sweet
I remember this from the other list. Quick rips showing albums can be good w a bunch of quick rippers
Three Girl Rhumba (2006 Remastered Version), comienza igual que la canción de Elastica.
Raw
Good
Nothing to write home about
An album like this would usually get my standard contemptful indifference to boring punk thatre a dime a dozen on this list but the 21 songs in 35 minutes thing at least makes it interesting to talk about. Since I listened to this at 2 in the morning after a Taylor swift concert Im probably biased but honestly the constant switching of songs made the album seems far longer than it actually was despite also feeling faster paced. It was very odd.
Punk without the energy
é um bom album mas nada memoravel
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah it was alright Favourite song: Track 4 - Ex Lion Tamer
I like how no songs overstay their welcome.
unadulterated punk. the vocals are a little more english than I appreciate, even coming from a cantubury prog fan, but I think it's more to do with the hard twang of working class englishmen. I'd rather listen to the dead kennedys, but I can respect what this album does.
Not bad 70’s punk rock. Didn’t really catch me. Solid 3 but probably not something I’d listen to again.
세련된 2번 트랙. 모든 곡이 강렬한듯 간결하다. 4번 트랙 Ex lion tamer에 한표
The guitar sound quality on some songs sound like dookie. Quite catchy for a punk rock band. Some songs suck but some are good. Better than I was expecting. Three Girl Rhumba, Ex-Lion Tamer, The Commercial, Strange, Fragile, Mannequin and 12 X U.
Fast, fun and catchy songs. I can tell this had a lot of influence on future punk music. 3.5/5
it was pretty good but not my type of music
It’s ok
Last couple of songs reminded me of Die!Die!Die! , they must have played a heavy influence .
Giving it a 3 for nostalgia only. Felt like I was reliving my short lived middle school punk phase. Fun but all sounds too much the same.
buen punk
Schysst punk.
Inicios del punk anglosajón. Con pegada, pero un tanto parecido entre sí. Aun así, disco valorable.
Didn't love it, didn't hate it. The only thing that stood out here was the guitar riff from "Three Girl Rhumba," which Elastica borrowed for their song, "Connection." Other than that, it was middle-of-the-road old school punk.
Unremarkable
Probably the best of the pretty large punk offering the generator has served me so far. The beats were banging but I could not understand a word of the vocal.
Pretty good British punk album, but doesn’t stand out much from its contemporaries.
My new favorite 70s punk band. Will listen again. 3.5
Interesting. Never heard this band.
Viel Rocky vibe. Me likey. Aber ein bisschen repetitive.
Ok punk
Listened Before? N I really didn't mind this. It's listed as "post punk" but it's very close to just being punk with it's punky themes and short songs. Sounds a TON like The Clash. May listen again. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: 3 Girl Rhumba
3.5 over mid brit punk
Punk. 22 songs in 38 minutes. Hard. Good album. Will not buy.
Punky!
If you would have told me that this came out in '77, I wouldn't have believed it. Production value for being a punk album is actually pretty high. Ultimately, it's just not my thing though. I wish the songs stood on their own and were longer. Each song transitions into the next one and is cut short right as you start get into it. Of course, that's also why some people love the album so much it looks like.
Enjoyed this one! Very early punk stuff, I'm always impressed to hear this kind of music from the '70s. Nothing super crazy or standout, but a handful of tracks that I'll be keeping. Favorite tracks: Field Day for the Sundays, Pink Flag, Strange, Champs. Album art: Well the name is accurate, it's a pink flag flying in the middle of nowhere. I appreciate the simplicity. 3.5/5
I made it through most of this. A few more songs isn’t gonna change my opinion. It’s fine for what it is, but doesn’t really do it all that much for me.
Very influential, but I like the bands they influenced better. Joy Division, Husker Du, Fugazi, Gang of Four, etc. The album has a couple of great songs, but also some filler. The production is boxy. It's great for the slower songs, but not for the faster ones. The guitars lack punch. The fast drum parts sound very weak. Favorite song: Three Girl Rumba.
It's quite good but I probably wouldn't revisit. Enjoyed recognising the riff from Three Girl Rhumba the searching to see if Elastica sampled it or ripped it off. :)
Not a band I've explored in the past. Thought is was gonna be a bit Gang of Four but it underwhelmed a bit. Short punky sings with strong vibes/riffs but nothing really stuck in my head. A couple of songs that Elastica seemed to rio off.
Lots of momentum, feel good energy. I will never get bored of that exaggerated punk rock drawl.
3 sterrekes.
Some good tracks but ultimately just okay.
average song length: 1'42": not outstaying their welcome
Musically, punk (specifically short, hardcore punk like this album) is a genre that's never really caught my interest. That said, there were a number of songs on here I did like, mostly ones that deviated from that formula or ones where I could understand the lyrics. favs: Strange, Lowdown, Fragile least fav: Field Day for the Sundays
A pretty fun listen.
21 tracks in 35 minutes — I like the pace.
It struck me how meticulously clean the drums were.
Pretty good punk rock.
The album was alright. It's Punk rock. I have no desire to listen to it again but I didn't hate it. I didn't skip any songs.
Fun music to listen too. Younger me might like this. 3.0/5
There's a Ramones vibe here, even though it's not as accessible as say I Wanna Be Sedated or Blitzkrieg Bop. It's more interesting than it is enjoyable, and I was left wanting more. Not more Pink Flag or Wire, just more than what these 21 snippets gave off.
Meh, nonplussed.
Pretty pretty good
Great find. Its too rough for me to listen to regularly, but I can hear a lot of music from the 90s and today that I love in this record
noice
Is okay, sounds not too special to me.
Not bad, it's no undertones though!
Pretty good. Short and sweet, but packs a lot of punch.
Haven't heard of them but I would definitely listen again.
Quite a few song tracks (21) for only 36 minutes of music, so some of these are quite short. A few seemed to end quite abruptly. But the music was really a lot of fun. They relied heavily on heavy distorted chords with full rich voicing. They turn those into driving rhythmic riffs that really make you bang your head. Fun songs and fun album.
Once again I thought this was an interesting album but it wasn’t anything special. The voice wasn’t spectacular: at times it was whiny and eh but the music was pretty good.
From someone who does not "like" punk rock... I've always liked this. Not as frenetically chaotic as many punk bands - this is more melodic than most (I'm not a fan of the most aggressive songs (e.g. Surgeon's Girl) but then again, they're over in usually less than 2 minutes :D...). At its best it's good British rock and I feel like it seems to have more in common with some Britpop than I'd realized. Not for everyday consumption but who doesn't want to occasionally slam dance around the living room and terrorize the family. 21 songs in 36 minutes. It's an aggressive but fun trip. 6/10 3 stars.
álbum rabioso, lleno de energía, experimental creería yo, distinto a lo que se dictaba en los 70s, álbum agradable.
Great punk album and super ahead of its time, just one of my least favorite genres
Simplistic punk rock instrumentals that aren't mindblowing in any way accompanied by almost incomprehensible singing which I usually don't mind. New Bomb Turks cover of Mr. Suit is better than the original. It's overall mediocre and I give it 2,5/5 stars.
Sure, it's groundbreaking, but none of the songs really stand out.
Every song is a short blast of fizzing energy. I’m sad that I hadn’t actually heard of them before, because obviously they spawned so many offshoots. They are dynamic and fun and never outstay their welcome. Love Three Girl Rhumba.
It was missing something lol
Good punk music. Could listen to it again.
Zwischen 3 und 4
Notes - Ive tried to listen to this album before and it didn’t hit for me - British post punk band’s debut album - Reminds me a bit of pixies at times - Out of 21 songs, there’s about 7 or 8 that really worked for me and the rest kinda blurred together - The guitar tones are cool, the vocals are really compelling, the bass is mostly inaudible, and the drumming is weak - None of it was bad enough to be offensive but I also wasn’t huge on it Fav - Lowdown Least fav - Start to move 3/5
Many of the songs were pretty short. Definitely punk feeling, seemed fairly instrument-focused with some vocals thrown in. Didn't take themselves too seriously, the vocals were sometimes pretty goofy
вроде норм)
Somehow I get the feeling that the 1001 albums list is not about HAVING to listen to them, but YOU listening to them, because I probably wouldn't do it again. Sadly that is the case for this one again, not bad but that's it
Quick and punchy. I couldn't understand a word but the singing is exactly what I envision when I think of late 70s/80s English punk.
HL: “Mannequin”, “Strange”, “Ex-Lion Tamer” Think I’m leaning closer to 3 stars than 2. I suspect in this list there will be a few more punk/postpunk LPs from the late 70s/early 80s that I am simply ambivalent over. At times it sounds like an album from the 90s, which certainly highlights their influence on later alt-rock bands. And there are just enough enjoyable songs to make the “1234!DuDuDuDu” song fragments worth sitting through.
Didn’t sound British to me - really close to a 4 star.
It was alright, sort of had an abrupt ending, some weird songs in the beginning
A nice tight sound
solid post punkish album. idk if this band was ever in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater but that's the type of vibe this album gives off. Liked it but didn't love it
Pop punk before it was cool. Echoes of Bowie, without the inspiration or musicianship. Mostly boring.
Prima old-school punk
Pretty good. This kind of shit is my bag. Just not enough bangers
Loved the fact that none of the songs overstayed their welcome - made this a very easy listen. Lots of catchy Melodie’s. Great drum work and awesome vocals.
I am having a hard time understanding the hype concerning this one. There are great bursts of energy and some catchy riffs along the way ('Pink Flag', 'Straight Line', 'Mannequin' and '12 X U' stand out), and Wire were of course completely ahead of their time when they released this in 1977. But the end product does not move me (neither emotional nor body-wise) and any innovations have long time since been thoroughly incorporated in contemporary punk and post-punk. Cool tunes though.
Standard
As pure and loud as punk can get.
not a big fan of the vocals but I enjoy the instrumentals.
Fresh and rough Cut. Indie garage rock. Could do with more variation, it is like two-three songs repeated over and over
A solid collection of punk standards and a blueprint in to see how they became into the post-punk cult heroes they still are.
This was a really pleasant surprise. Opening track wonderful! I'm hearing (either influence / influenced) Lou Reed, Pixies, Arctic Monkeys, Elastica and much more I can't quite pinpoint.
3.5 Stars. Pretty impressive for 1977 - It's not my interest, but i feel like I can hear the influence for the later post-punk acts like Joy Division. I may consider listening again
3/13, 23%
Many very short songs, 2 min and shorter. Feels like brief, disconnected thoughts. As far as I know; I couldn’t understand much of the lyrics. Some catchy, some punk thrash.
I get this is probably genre defining and can see the influences its had...but I didn't love it
It certainly has some moments of brilliance, but it feels at moments more like a demo album with song ideas than complete songs.
Decent 70s punk sound.
Another album that isn't overwhelming, but has some catchy songs, not too long, so I'm pretty happy with it
enjoyable punk rock
Decent
Never heard of Wire, but I liked this album. It seems to have spawned half a dozen different musical sub-genres in one go, and it moves between them at pace. I've got a lot of time for bands who keep the songs to under 90 seconds. Literally.
I have no idea what they're saying; this is my kind of rock. Although now this feels more like punk. To be honest, I didn't know when punk started, but in or around 1977 would not have been my guess.
Loud simple music with a bit of a nerdy edge to it. Makes me think of something like The Ramones mixed with Talking Heads.
Meh
It was a solid album, nothing really stood out to me as particularly special, but I did enjoy it.
Another album — another band! — I've never even heard of. Definitely a cool feature of this adventure. Punk was never a genre I particularly connected with, Siouxsie and the Banchees and a couple of others were exceptions, and for a minute, I heard a similarity with Siouxsie and Wire. That didn't exactly last, and I won't consider this a band I've fallen in love with, but they were cool and did this right — short songs, no bullshit, bing, bang boom. I did recognize "Strange," though it took a quick Internet search to realize that's because R.E.M. covered the tune on Document. Funny how those lyrics triggered that "I know this from somewhere" switch in my brain. And what the fuck did we do before the Internet? I was there, but what did we do? Just go crazy trying to remember things we couldn't look up in 12 seconds? I would not have put the R.E.M. connection together. So... a 2? A 3? I don't see me going back to this album or this band a whole lot, but maybe. I'm going with a 3. Right down the middle.
I like that the album is energetic, and I can hear how this album has influenced some modern artists. However, some of the songs seem to blend together and can be boring at some points. Favorite song: Mannequin.
I don't have much to say. I enjoyed it in the background. Was anything singable? I don't know... hm There were some songs that had sounds that were beyond the guitar, drums and vocal... I was actually turning my head to see where these sounds were coming from quite frequently.
Es por este tipo de descubrimientos que sigo adelante con este proyecto
Not my typical genre, but pretty enjoyable nonetheless. I can imagine this playing while digging through crates at a record store adding a nice soundtrack to the experience
Interesting to hear a massive riff elastics used. Other than that made no real impression I’m afraid, other than to not disappoint.
Fun punky music but too soft for me.
Starts out unpromising, but gets better.
Edgy hard cold punk rock. Fun but not for all the time
Fine early punk. Doesn’t really break out or transcend the normal chord progressions.
Funky but not my taste
Not a band I'm familiar with nor a genre I listen to much but quite enjoyed this album. Each song was short, fun and set themselves apart from the others - a really easy listen and short enough that despite not being a Punk fan, I still enjoyed the album.
This was actually pretty enjoyable. Will I listen to it again? Probably not, given the sheer amount of actually great music out there, but maybe?
I wrote in another review that a lot of British punk bands sound like they're soullessly checking off a list to ensure they meet all the qualifications of punk, and this is one of those bands. It sounds like they clocked in at 10, drudged their way through a tedious task, and got home by 3. And then maybe they took a nap. It's not bad, it's just...boring. Best track: Mannequin
Tímamótaverk, ég veit ekkert um það. En hresst pönk og oft skemmtilegt.
I should liked this a lot more. The songs were short and fun but the vocals just didn't work for me.
3.5 stars. Decent post-punk. I feel like Elastica borrowed from Three Girl Rhumba.
Old note by now but my main objection here is the English punk/post-punk vocal style. Understood about one word in ten and the attitude is just boring. Maybe it was super rebellious when it was new, maybe annoying middle class, middle age dudes is the whole point. I liked the music pretty well. When I heard REM’s version of Strange I had no idea it was a cover.
Riffs. Punk.
pretty good punk sound. Not necessarily distinctive, but solid.
Необычный альбом для 77 года. Либо я редко слушал панк-рок. Но так не сильно зацепил, хотя некоторые треки звучали интересно.
Fine
Lekker energiek, wel typisch zo'n band die ik vaker heb beluisterd maar die me niet echt weet te raken.
Kon dit best hebben, niet alle nrs waren even leuk, maar al met al heb ik best vermaakt met dit plaatje.
Good rock
Good drive. But fell apart there at the end.
Pretty cool and foreshadowing but not the most iconic punk album of the era
7/10
I liked it loud!
A fun album but nothing that wowed me.
Seminal lo-fi punk album. Has some genius moments but over 21 mostly 2 minutes songs it just feels too disjointed for me to really enjoy.
I enjoyed
Punky
Very fast, very energetic, very mediocre rock. I get that it inspired a lot of other groups, but the album itself just felt bland to me.
Spiky guitars, spiky vocals, spiky drums. Music so angular you could cut yourself on it. Best Tracks: Three Girl Rhumba; Ex Lion Tamer; Mannequin
Nett, aber nicht umwerfend...
2/8/2022 Today's Album: "Pink Flag" by Wire - This album is 35 minutes of 21 fairly short songs, with many running just over a minute. This UK band plays punchy punk-garage rock that goes well with the format of the album, since the tunes they are playing are usually quite abrasive, making their short runtime a warm welcome. In the longer songs, the band takes a step back to work on stronger melodies, but they still come across as a chugging, angry, and punky melodies that do tend to grate on my ears after a while. The lyrics get drowned out in the mix fairly often and anytime the band actually tried for a subtler approach, it is often cut short in favor of more yelling and chugging guitars and drums. I think it's a good album if you like punk influence and want to listen to some upbeat and quick tunes, but it really isn't something I'd like to come back to. The style is obviously fairly new at the time of release (1977) so there is a lot of innovation to appreciate, but in this day in age if you have ever heard a punk band, you've heard this one and it just feels played out when they aren't doing something different with it. With that being said, the music is well performed and never feels amateurish or sloppy despite how messy the genre usually is. Score: 5.5 Some good moments but overall not my thing Highlights: Reuters, Lowdown, The Commercial, Fragile, Mannequin, Feeling Called Love,
This was a fun punk listen.
p381, 1977. 3 stars Proto punk, surprisingly OK, not as raw as The Clash or Sex Pistols but suitably angry. Decent songs and playing. As with a lot of punk, you have to be in the right mood for it, and if you are then this is above average.
All over the place. From certified bangers™, to weird 30-second gibberish that can hardly be classified as music. Really not sure about this one - I thought I would enjoy it more than I did.
Fine album, gets a bit stale after a while, but just your standard early punk album.
This foot to the floor metal ain’t my thing… it’s just too 1D!
Always loved the cover for this, more than the record itself these days it seems.
Some good punk rock that I was unaware of. Thanks!
Awesome, punchy, energetic punk album. Lots of short tracks.
It's was very punk
Not really listened to this one before and really enjoyed it. Early punk vibes.
I have heard of these folks, but I have not really liked the albums I have heard. This was a step up from the albums I have heard, fortunately. This punk album was okay, but every song was under 2 minutes with no bridge or chorus. The songs seemed very underdeveloped. Don't get me wrong, songs don't have to be long to be good. But these just seemed like germs of ideas, as if they had a riff but nothing else. The Clash had riffs. And they turned them into songs. There were verses and bridges and all the things a song needs to have, and some of them were pretty short, too. These just seem like... half-baked ideas.
Not bad. But it's a bit too frenetic with all the songs that are 1min or less (21 songs in 35min). Hard to get into anything or appreciate where their skills lie. Ex Lion Tamer and Reuters had a good sound. Mannequin was alright (seems to be their most notable song). Sounds like Elastica ripped off the main riff from Three Girl Rhumba for their song Connection (I like that riff). Champs and 12 x U had some good energy. Pink Flag sounded about a decade ahead of its time with its rough edge, yet needs more work. So again, not bad, but uneven.
Fun punk album - some really good songs but as an album unremarkable
Standard shouty punk. 21 tracks in half an hour makes it feel longer than it is.
Three Girl Rhumba (2006 Remastered Version), comienza igual que la canción de Elastica.
Very consistent punk album.
Bleah.
I like it when music that falls generally somewhere in the very broad "punk" category has some groove to it, and this band brings it nicely. I appreciate punk mostly for its cultural significance and influence on other genres of music, but I don't listen to a lot of it because it's often just too harsh for me. (Related to the same part of my DNA that likes spicy food on the medium, not hot, scale? I have no idea.) Some songs are little screechy for me, but overall, I like this album. I had not heard of the band or heard any of their music, but, wow, I can absolutely hear how their sound influenced a lot bands to follow. For example, I read in the Wikipedia entry (the one on the band itself, not this album) that The Feelies, one of my favorite bands (man, I just love 'The Good Earth' and still listen to it), regularly cover one of their songs in live shows. I hear the similarities. So cool. So, Yes, I like this album and some of the tracks really stuck out for me, like "Reuters," "Ex Lion Tamer," and "Mannequin." "Fragile" might be my favorite. And the brief track, "The Commercial," is really fun.
3/5 Not really bad.
El Punk es esto. 21 canciones en 35 minutos y 36 segundos. No los conocía de nada y tienen cosas buenas. Se nota que han influenciado a mucha gente desde que debutaron con este disco en 1977. Me gustaron: Three girl rhumba, Ex lion tamer, Start to move, Mannequin y Different to me.
34. Pink Flag - Wire 21 tracks. I say 21 tracks, but 6 of them are under 1 min long so the whole album is still only 35 mins and it works by keeping you interested & engaged with no time to be bored and switch off. Decent. 3/5
really good racket
Punk
Engelse punk. Ik vind het wel iets hebben. Heb misschien wel een geheim zwakte voor dit soort schreeuwerige muziek. Zit lekker veel energie in. Verder is het ook weer niet heel bijzonder. ***
loud noises
It was alright. Not a genre I would seek out again so a low 3*
Albums like this remind me how harsh the music business can be. These guys have a decent sound and easily piqued my interest. They are not following a neat and tidy roadmap that was set out for them. The album was released in 1977 so the roadmap wasn't yet written. Sure they're not in the same league as Talking Heads, The Clash, et al but they should have sold a few more albums and I should have at least heard of them. Tough business.
It was hard to get a good listen because my co- judge kept turning the stereo off whenever I put it on. I know that they were influential and quite revered at CKCU in the 80s. I think that thrashy fast numbers would have been predecessors to American punk like Black Flag, which I despise, and then the more melodic (longer like more than 90 second) numbers may have influenced bands like XTC. But they didn’t seem to me much of an influence on themselves. They took a real left turn on the LP after this one and actually hired a cover band to open for them and play songs from this album!
21 biisiä ja 35min kesto, siitä pisteet.
Good solid punk rock. 3 stars.
I like it, but don’t love it. 3.5
3, it was pretty good! I wasn't familiar with them before this.
New band and new music for me. I'm curious as to where this album fits with punk and the rest of the music scene at the time of it's release. There wasn't anything that stood out in particular to me, good or bad. With some of the tracks being so short, I may need to listen again just to make sure I heard everything.
“Pink Flag” by Wire (1977) If music can be compared to a meal, this album provides a 21-course repast, spicy and varied, inviting and adventurous. Of mixed quality, yet in small servings, these dishes are paced rapidly enough to sustain interest. Twenty one underdeveloped songs in thirty five minutes. Whew. Now I need to breathe deeply and maybe smoke a cigar or take a walk. There is an interesting lyrical preoccupation with numbers, perhaps giving meaning to the title track, “Pink Flag”, asking “how many dead or alive?”. Since this track and “Strange” are the longest tracks on the album, one suspects that there is an anxious expression of concern about what the hell is going on in this most lethal century in human history. It’s an attractive anxiety. Melodies are minimalist or lacking altogether. The chief musical aim seems to be the display of a dizzying variety of rhythm guitar sonic textures and grooves, with a heavy use of effects. Lyrics, vocals, and rhythm section are all relegated to a secondary, supportive function. Punk vocal stylings are, well, punk. And not good punk at that. This ain’t Henry Rollins. But this album is definitely worth a listen or two, if only to experience some of the entrancing things that can be done with simple barre chords on an electric guitar, even without a high level of physical dexterity. 3/5
A very quick album to get through, reasonably simple punk rock but kept me mostly interested.
3.5
kinda neat, not notable though
3 1/2
Pink flag is definitely a cool album. It’s definitely groundbreaking, ahead of its time and tight. I just got a bit bored with a lot of its songs.
Mostly forgettable, with a few bright spots. But not enough to make it worth repeated listening.
songs are short but sweet with frequent changes in pace. album has more tracks than you'd typically see from the 70s and 80s. songs themselves aren't very unique, pretty typical for underground punk rock. got a little bored around the 10th song.
Usually don’t like punk at all really, but this album was a more subtle punk ting so I didn’t hate it. I might be wrong but wasn’t 1977 really early for punk? Maybe this album inspired/paved the way for punk? Maybe a 2.5 star for me cus I’d be more likely to put the previous Hendrix album on instead of this but it’s pretty good as far as punk goes tbh
I listened to the album but cant remember listening to it. Every song sounded the same (which wasnt a bad thing) I dont think its a bad album by any means, but definitely not one that ill remember by next week
I've never heard an album like this with many short songs one after the other. I had this on in the background while doing some chores and it passed me by without catching my attention in a negative or a positive way.
Punk!
