Fun to listen on road trips but otherwise felt kinda monotonous
actually enjoyed a lot, thought it had a fun and unique sound but reminded me of some other similar bands i like too
the disco parts were cool. the rest was fine. low 3
Kinda like the British Tom Waits? Wild, bawdy, weird. I like it.
Mad British silliness. Fun. Respect the Gene Vincent respect.
Musically interesting and well-written in parts, though I’m still not totally sure why he’s held in as high regards as he is. 3.5/5
Gostei do álbum. Tem uma sonoridade bem variada. Celest Pandamon.
Fun instrumentals. Weird vocals. Idk.

Fav: If I Was A Woman Least Fav: I’m Partial To Your Abracadabra Love a bit of geezer-core. Wasn’t amazing but I appreciated a nice bit of British early punk. Sad that it didn’t have the song about hitting me with your rhythm stick :(
On one hand, Dury's band on this record is sharp as a tack and they do a stellar job with the variety of punk rock / new wave / music hall (!) tracks on this record. Dury also himself has a lot of personality that shines through in these songs. On the other hand, the material is uneven - the cuts co-written with guitarist Chas Jankel are the strongest (especially the slick and sophisticated "If I Was With A Woman", despite its bizarro lyrics) but the remaining tracks are more forgettable.
2.5/5
The songs that are good are really good. But then the other songs are just goofy.
3-
This is an incredibly British album. This is another album from this book where the artist was English and the album did not sell terribly well, but there is just so much genius present the songs must be heard. I don't know, just not sure I see what is being done here that other artists didn't seem to do a bit better. Warren Zevon seemed to have a similar quirky writing style and I thought I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra sounded like Werewolves of London initially. Warren Zevon could not be in this book though, because he's not British. There are good songs on here but there also isn't a ton of music that sounds revolutionary to my ears or anything that happens to stand out if I heard it on the radio. I don't believe Dury is as clever as he presents himself to be (Billericay Dickie is a great example). I can't pan this album, because it's not awful and there are a variety of sounds present which did interest me. I would have left it off the list though. Sometimes an album isn't a work of misunderstood genius and the fact there were no hit songs on the album does not mean these songs were worthy of being hits. Ian Dury is another artist thrust upon us because the editors of the book wanted to show how they are willing to crown an album as important because they want to feel like it is important. Surely it is the kids that are wrong! My favorite songs were: Sweet Gene Vincent I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra My Old Man Blockheads Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n Roll
I really only knew Ian Dury from the Hit me with your rhythm stick phase. The album is quirky and very definitely an acquired taste. I don't hate this but it did start to wear a little thin
Disco punk at its best.
Defititely British. It was OK, but not a standout record.
So many times I had to stop and wonder what I was listening to. Real or satire.
I expected this to be terrible. It wasn’t. It’s very British and very of-its-time, but I found it to be rather interesting and, at times, enjoyable. No real earworms but something tells me Dury accomplished exactly what he set out to with this one.
A bit too English for my Canadian sensibilities but I didn't hate it either. I do get some of this is satire so it has to be taken with a grain of salt. It gets a passing grade for being unique and different. Also, the bass playing is exemplary.
What a fun album!
3 estrelas. Divertido
Very Working Class English. More ups than downs. I liked it.
Some songs I liked, some I won’t remember them with time. Maybe I need a second third forth listening.
Don't see the purpose of the second disk, mostly demo versions of the first disk. The signing is far from stellar, but the album is in general snappy and fun. Best underdog song: Apples. 7/10
Blind album and artist. Very odd album name and odd album.... He ain't getting new boots and panties from me cause this was not an album for me.
fun and upbeat
It's cool and fun, but the shtick gets old.
Always had a soft spot for Ian Dury. he never seemed to fit into the punk scene very well - too much humor.
I didn't find a lot special about this other than the bass guitar had some nice rhythms
Very rough and juvenile, but high octane and fun
на первом проходе совсем треш. на втором-третьем немного забавно)
"Hit me, hit me, hit me"... was hoping for more of that, but I was naive in thinking I'd get that from this album despite having "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" in all it's enjoyable splendour. I didn't recognise any other songs. It's very 70s teenage angst, but I guess a lot of Ian's songs are based around some sexual connotation. Something about it pulls me in, but it's not amazing. Musically it's well done, but Ian's over pronounced cockney voice gets a bit old and the lyrics aren't particularly great. "My Old Man" for instance has some great jazz guitar licks and the drums on "Clever Trevor" are pretty sweet (although basic), but the lyrics aren't inspiring at all. 3, because he was born around the corner from where I lived as a kid and the tailor in "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" has my name.
Simpatičan novovalni kuriozitet
God his voice sounds so familiar but could not put my finger on it. Honestly a fun album. Would never be a favorite of mine or anything but I'm glad I was exposed to it. Could've done with fewer shit noises though.. Favorite track: Wake up and make Love with Me
5.5/10
The band is pretty good. Very weird
Sounds like a group of Blockheads made this.
Ian’s cool. He’s not really in my strike zone but anyone who can title a song “Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll” and make it GOOD is doing all right. ‘E’s takin the piss, idn’e?
Much better than the reviews suggested. Music was funky and tight. Just a bit too silly.
Weird
Morro!
Funky rock. Boogie woogie.
Odd rock and roll, a genre I typically love. I enjoyed this, although it’s hard for me to love it. Funny lyrics
I find the divisive reviews on this album - lots of 1s and 5s - interesting. It's a hugely diverse collection of songs (from drunk guy in a pub on the piano, to full band with horn section, to classic rock 'n' roll, to punk and even a bit post punk), and the very literal lyrics brought a smile to my face several times. I can see the influence on a few (frankly better) bands. It's not going to make it into my regular rotation, but I'm glad I've heard it.
- I like the instrumentation but i don’t like his voice very much. lyrics aren’t exactly charming me. they’re clever and all but i. don’t like them - if i was with a woman ending is incredibly unpleasant which i know is the point. but still. - ok the belch and then the fart noise into synth is kind of awesome. (2:10 of blockheads)
Aggressively English. Seems like something me da would listen to. Some songs way too long and repetitive but the guitar is very addictive and overall the production makes u wanna move
Le numéro du mauvais garçon m’amuse plus qu’il ne m’irrite ici. Du rock classique à l’influence glam, des paroles intelligentes mais sans prétention. Irrévérencieux.
Listens: 2 Standout tracks: My Old Man Wasn't available on YouTube Music, had to listen to it on straight YouTube. It's... Interesting. I'm not loving it, but I'm not hating it either. I couldn't help but look at the reviews before writing this (mostly to see others' experience with finding the album online). The general sentiment seems to be ugh god why. I don't have a visceral reaction to this, either positively or negatively. Some of the songs are amusing. The multitude of sexual references and scenarios in particular; to hear this guy talk about sexual encounters and scenarios is hilarious. Honestly the It's that Essex accent that probably puts a lot of people off. Woof. I probably won't listen to this ever again, partly because it's not easily accessible on YTM. I won't fret much about that.
(Argh...thanks to my inattention and YouTube Music's maddening algorithm, the following review is based on listening to a 2001 tribute album "Brand New Boots and Panties" rather than the original 1977 "New Boots and Panties"; at least this explains my confusion about how modern it sounds and all the guest artists, none of whom were mentioned in the Wikipedia entry. But at least the Blockheads did nearly all of the tracks on the 2001 tribute album, and listening to the 2001 version certainly made me even more receptive to the 1977 original....) I'm not familiar with Ian Drury, so I wasn't sure what this album had to offer, but the album cover certainly kept my expectations low, which is always a good start . And I'm really impressed at the range of music styles as well as the *really* impressive guest artists gracing the album, not to mention a really tight and solid backing band. When I saw that Sinead O'Connor sang on the first track, I was really confused and had to double-check this album was really 1977; this must have been *very* early in her career, and I really enjoyed "Wake up and make love with me" in large part for how unexpected her appearance was. I'm not as familiar with a number of the other singers, but I still enjoyed nearly every track (especially "Clever Trevor"), and really enjoyed how all of them are homages to his roots in the great London area, and I loved it that he included Billy Bragg on "Billericay Dickie". (And kudos to Paul McCartney for belting it out in "Abracadabra".) At times I was reminded of The Kinks' "Village Green Preservation Society" (especially on "My old man"), but I like it that Dury's sound is his own and he owns it completely. I'm also struck at how much later this album sounds than 1977 (in a good way). Dury certainly earned four stars for this album (now revised, below). (And since I feel like I needed to actually listen to the original album, here's a truncated review after listening to the 1977 album.) It's hard to say exactly what I might have thought of this album if I hadn't inadvertently listened to the tribute album version first, but I *can* say that I appreciated the original album more as a result of having heard the 2001 version first and from reading in advance about Ian Dury's life and the album's concept. I *do* wish that Dury had chosen to include his better-selling singles from the recording sessions on the album (especially "Sex and drugs and rock and roll", but also "Hit me with your rhythm stick" and "Reasons to be cheerful, part 3"), as those have a bit more punch than most of the album's tracks. My favorites from the original album are similar to those from the tribute album--"My old man", "Clever Trevor", and "Billericay Dickie"--although only the 1977 version of "My old man" seems even better than the tribute versions, I'll admit. I'm really glad I listened to this album twice, and in the order I did, but I feel like I need to downgrade the rating to three stars since the original isn't as compelling on its own.
A fun listen. So very British. I detected some elements in this that I think found their way into some jam bands.
Music hall meets 70s pop rock meets gangsta rap. Kinda works.
A fun romp through the good ol days
Got funk
There are some quirky and inventive lyrics on here, although I find his vocals a bit annoying. He sounds like a parody cockney Music wise there's some nice variety, I enjoyed the slightly heavier Blockheads and Sweet Gene Vincent is a fun single. I don't think I'd return to this but it has some merits
Rating: 3/5 | Favorite Track: Blockhead --- This album is just barely a 3 star album for me. I don't care for Ian Dury's vocal performance nor his sense of humor in his lyricism (finding several tracks to be a bit tasteless). There are much better punk and new wave albums than this.
Kind of a weird goofy album, but not bad goofy. I would listen along again and not feel bad about it. It is off, but in the right kind of off way.
Dury is an interesting listen. Not sure if I like it or not.
What a strange ambling tour inside this guy's mind. It's like you're just listening to the inner monologue of a guy walking home from a pub. Great instrumentation.
Interesting early ska/British alternative. Not sure what this genre is, but squeeze is in the same category.
Whimsical. Leo really liked it.
The music was too good for this guys vocals and weird lyrics most of the time, best song was blockheads because of how chaotic it was and all of the songs definitely had some good elements to them, mostly the guitar and keyboards all done by Chas Jankel and the bass from Norman Watt-Roy, drums were fine as well, this is a low 3 for me mostly because the instrumentation I thought was really good. Overall 5/10.
Actually really enjoyable. I probably only knew Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll and Rhythm Stick (though not on this album). A lot of fun and quite diverse. Would listen again.
I enjoyed this.
I like the production. It's maybe the most aggressively British performance I've ever heard.
Nice to hear that old rocker Ian Dury again. Too bad "Hit me (with your rhythm stick)" isn't on here. There are more nice songs on here than I expected.
Not as bad as I thought it would be based on the description, but still not great. Strange content aside, there was a decent chunk that felt like I was listening to a British audiobook. The parts that got more punk focused were the best.
Pet fav songs: Sweet Gene Vincent; Plaistow Patricia; Blackmail Man. It's albums like this that make me happy an Englishman compiled this list because an American wouldn't include this album. It's a culture shock which reminds one how different the UK and US are despite how much we share, and I'm here to have an egg of knowledge cracked on my head. I love the title. The musicianship and production are top notch. The best songs are at the end as the album verges on going off the rails. Fun, weird, very British. I will likely never listen to this again.
Honestly, not bad. At times, it plays like Ween with how many styles they take on and the degrees of silliness they perform with. Highlights: "I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra", "Blockheads"
The disco-style Dorian mode in the opening track, Wake up and Make Love with Me, is undeniably cool. What immediately brings it down is Dury's vocal. Apart from the occasional Jackson-esque squeals, his melody rarely veers from the same three notes, and his delivery is flat and emotionless. Couple that with his shamelessly thick Cockney accent and you have a voice whose quality is just lower than the rest of the band. It really brings down the music. Which is a shame, because a lot of the (instrumental parts of the) music is excellent. Take the two-part Sweet Gene Vincent with its unexpected rock breakdown. With a singer that's even slightly competent, this could easily have become a multi-part rock classic, along the lines of Happiness Is A Warm Gun or Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey. But sadly, no banana. I guess the producers knew this - explaining why they chose to mix down Dury's voice. The same is done for quite a few tracks. My Old Man, with its distinctively lilting, melodic bassline and softly punctuating saxes, is similarly marred by the drunken, slightly out-of-tune monotone of Ian Man. The songs that suffer the most from Dury's oddity of a larynx are the novelty tracks Billericay Dickie and Plaistow Patricia - though to be fair, every song on the album kind of sounds like a novelty track. On the other hand, the music is so unserious that you can't help but enjoy it, even if it consists of objectively bad songwriting. As a listener who usually ignores lyrics, I actually took notice of these for being so goofy: "Every bit of clothing / Ought to make you pretty / You can cut the clothing / Grey is such a pity / I should wear the clothing of Mr Wool O'Mitty(?)"..."Get your teeth into a small slice / The cake of liberty" I went back through the lyrics in some of the other tracks and they're a rollercoaster of word salad and Cockney self-cockfidence. Overall, the good and the bad balance out to a cool 3 stars out of 5. This is one of those stupid albums on the list that you're glad you listened to, because it put you into a much better mood. But you'll never listen to it again for fear of God making fun of you at the gates of heaven. 3/5 Key tracks: Wake up and Make Love with Me, My Old Man, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll
First time listen. Quirky. Some cool music. Not sure I would listen to this again on purpose.
Funny guy. His lyrics may be vulgar, but when you don't understand them, the album listens very well at times, cheerfully. 6 out of 10.
2.5
Not my thing. It's hard for me to express exactly what I don't like, but it might be that it's a little too literal for me.
Hard to listen to. Like 2-3 songs.
Varierande kvalitet och bitvis lite pajigt, men på det stora hela okej lyssning. Trea åt det svagare hållet.
Not really feeling it tbh, sounds like a one pint warrior.
The cockney is fun, but not enough to sustain my interest throughout an entire album
Ian Dury is definitely a one off! I remember his hits when I was a kid and wouldn't call myself a die hard fan but I do recognise his humour and the last track you can almost be in the pub after a few having an out of tune sing song ha ha! The thought of our friends across the pond reviewing this thinking WTH is this Billericay Dickie?? makes me smile lol
The band sounds pretty cool, the singer does not.
++: Billericay Dickie, If I Was with a Woman, Plaistow Patricia, Blackmail Man +: Wake Up and Make Love with Me, Sweet Gene Vincent, My Old Man, Clevor Trever, Blockheads +-: I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra 6,9/10
Meh
The whole album has a fanciful quality to it that I rather liked. Copy/paste to read more: https://tinyurl.com/572ss2th
3*
Goofy but fun at times
Sort of a funny bloke, isn’t he. Entertainingly British. I wonder if The Streets was inspired by him
I know nothing about who wrote the original book, but albums like this makes me sure this guy was from the UK, because no one else would have ever picked this album. I mean it's fine, its a little too British/weird, but it isn't bad necessarily. No idea why I NEEDED to listen to this one before I died. This will be completely forgotten in a week. Low 3.
For the most part quite a fun, catchy album. I don't think it's something I'll listen again to in a hurry- but as a one-off listen I didn't mind it. I nearly gave this a 5 stars just for the huge synth fart in the middle of "Blockheads" alone. That and referring to a birds bits as her "rum and ribena" was top notch for me, and I'll absolutely be adopting that term in future when referring to a ladies "bubble and squeak". Some of the music did feel a little cluttered and repetitive in parts... although him spazzing out and shouting "blockheads" non-stop for nearly 40 seconds was actually quite entertaining. All in all it's a respectable 3 stars from me. Some fun songs, some better lyricism hidden amongst the chaos. Also I'm pretty sure in this day and age you're not allowed to pick on anyone that isn't able-bodied.. so picking on someone self-labelled as Spasticus Autisticus is definite faux pas.

Recommended for British geezers, self-aware perverts or - preferably - both.
I went to high school with a kid named Vinny r. And he was a strange dude. I think he would have loved this record. This dude sounds odd. Eccentric, off beat whatever you want to call it. But it does have some good grooves. Not terrible at all. But not good either. It’s fine.
Last 4 songs were pretty good.. Rest of the album is just kinda ehh. Not really good enough for a 3 but not bad enough for a 2. What to do..
Ian Dury, are you a real act or a joke? I'm not sure. But I'm here for the fun. The second half of the album is a little stronger than the first half with some more interesting songs. It's not high art, but it's funny and fun. It gets knocked a few stars just because it's not something I'll listen to often (Except for Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, that song is great.)
Was really looking forward to this album after the beautiful piano introduction, even the raunchy lyrics didn’t deter me. However, the musical quality deteriorated after the first track and it didn’t sufficiently counteract Mr Drury’s dogged horniness.
This is a raunchy, bawdy, crude, little romp and I liked it. Probably says more about me than the music but, hey, sometimes you just have to own it.
First song’s a bit rape-y, innit? I kind of think I just don’t really get this. There were times I thought I hated it and times I thought I loved it. Feels gimmicky and also way too English for me. There could be a great album somewhere in there, but I didn’t find it on the first listen through.
Drop the music hall comedy songs and its great album (all be it a very short one as would only be about 5 songs).
Worth being on this list for the reviews from Americans. Great musicianship. Lyrics a bit marmite.
Þetta eru mörg nokkuð skemmtileg lög og ágætis band. Ian Dury sjálfur er acquired taste, en ég fíla hann í hófi. Ekki nógu solid útí gegn til að hífa í fjarka, en vel rúmur þristur.
Can very much understand all the Marmite comments. Definitely some fantastic funk / post-punk music here, all sung by a plumber who's suddenly found fame on TikTok by saying English things to an American audience. The lyrics might as well be "water bottle, Marmite, crumpets" etc. I know plenty of people who love Drury for his gritty urban poet lyrics, but it never quite did it for me. 2 stars, but a bonus one for "sex & drugs & rock and roll" because that absolutely works beautifuly as a track.
Favorite Track: Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll
The songs are fun, but his voice is… iffy. I appreciate how unapologetically British it is, and I work near Billericay (my colleague who lives there told me about Billericay Dickey a few weeks ago!). I would definitely listen to it again just to get a chuckle.
New Boots and Panties!!, a title that makes me both cringe and laugh, was not what I expected. Ian Dury is an enigma. The lyrics are wacky and bizarre. An unfortunate aspect of his accent is that he pronounces well when singing--and his weird lyrics are very noticeable. But about halfway through the album, the weirdness morphed into an unusual fondness. Dury rhymed Trevor with however in "Clevor Trever"! And then "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" was a fucking BOP. So I'm rather partial to this weird ass album.
Or yeah this was weird maybe needs another listen. Not terrible hes like a cockney English Tom Waits or something
Weird af. Kinda good
I absolutely hated some of this album and really enjoyed other parts. Some of the songs remind me of Fear (Blackmail man, Plaistow Patricia) then some sound musically like a Bowie album with a Chimney sweep singing. Really quite an enigma of an album.
# Playlist track - Wake Up And Make Love With Me # Notes - Never heard of this guy before. - Opening track has banger bass+piano combo. - This whole thing is a trip! It's not *good*, but it is really catchy at times, and super fun too. - I don't think I'll be listening to this *all the time* but it was a wild ride, one definitely worth taking.
no
Fun one, gotta listen to it more deeply.
Is this some sort of British music I’m too American to understand?
Listened to bits and pieces. Unique sound
I really like his voice and style, how East-End it is in the delivery and content. I understand that won’t translate so well to other markets, but I dig it. Right from the off this is upbeat and a bit quirky and interesting. I love how mad and overblown some tracks are, like Blockheads, with the shouting and mad synths. 3.5 rounded down.
It's a pisstake but funny listen
It's very british. Not sure how essential it is, but at least it was something different, and the songs generally were pretty fun to listen to. Didn't take itself too seriously.
This was a lot more punk than I expected and a lot more punk than a lot of the more iconic, stereotypical punk acts that seem to be touted as pioneers. It's pretty cool in a lot of places, albeit also very, erm, gritty in others.
great tunes tho some are a little on the iffy side...
I'm very fond of this record but it doesn't quite strike a chord with me.
I’m pretty sure I’ve heard of Ian Dury before, but I can’t remember the context (I read his Wikipedia page, and that didn’t give me any clues sadly). I’m completely unfamiliar with his music though, but this sounds like an interesting album, so I’m excited to listen to it. This was a pretty fun album. I know it’s not classified as new wave album by the generator, or even Wikipedia, but it feels like an early new wave album to me. The guitars, keyboards, and synthesizers were great, and the rhythms were full of energy too. Even though this album feels like early new wave, there’s still plenty of chaotic punk sounds and the goofy lyrics are full of the same devil-may-care attitude from the punk scene. I really enjoyed that Ian Dury didn’t try to mask his English accent in his singing. This album isn’t really something that I’d gravitate towards, but it’s incredibly unique, and I really enjoyed the wild lyrics and the chaotic energy. This album sounds like Captain Beefheart meets Pere Ubu, and I never thought such a pairing of sounds could work as well as this does. This album is weird in all the right ways, but still accessible enough to be a pretty fun listen.
If this is proof that God doesn't exist, then I guess there really didn't need to be that much in the first place. This really isn't even bad, honestly. I feel like maybe the worst thing I can say about it is that Ian Dury's vocals are a little more lowkey than I'd like. A little too sleepy, maybe, even. It's not like it doesn't work at all atop a lot of these disco and music hall instrumentals, thanks in large to his accent, though I don't feel like I was really into the album until the last three songs. That's where it gets incredibly punk and pub rock, and it kicks ass. Even with "Blockheads" having this massive synth fart. It's maybe a case where the fact that I'm melody first is really doing this album a disservice. It's apparently filled with these stories of love and working class people from Essex, so perhaps if I'd dug into those more I'd've gotten more out of the majority of the album. Inevitably, though, I am who I am, and unless it's something I'm particular into... Yeah. At the very least, this album's musically good enough that I wouldn't give it lower than a 3. The only thing that holds it back from a 4 in my book is that the vocals could've stood to have been more interesting. And it didn't make me question my faith in a higher power in the universe, anyway, so that helps.
I like this one better than the other Ian Dury and the Blockheads album I own. It seems representative of Great Britain in the late 70s.
Classic UK punk rock, pretty fun.
Okay
This album is “A couple of pints with the lads at the pub” the album. The band is solid, the singer is pretty bad. It’s hilarious, it’s misogynistic, and most importantly it’s entertaining. Is it the best album on this list? God no! But I’m glad I listened to it. Sex And Drugs And Rock & Roll is a classic. Favorite songs were Sweet Gene Vincent, Billericay Dickie, Blockheads, and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.
I was a bit disappointed today. Expected some kind of masterpiece. A few songs were annoying to listen to. The album isn't bad though, just not as good I anticipated. I'm now 1 album closer to the end of the list. 3 stars for "New Boots and Panties!!".
3.5
A bit too odd and “ugly” for me. It has some positive poppier moments and good playing which gives some boost to the score. 3 stars.
3.5
I liked the album, but I can't take it seriously one bit. It reminds me of something Eric Idol would come up with for Dirk McQuickly (7.5) ★★★½
Kinda underwhelming listen. I like quite a few Ian Dury and the Blockheads songs but none of them seem to feature here on the original tracklist. Lyrics are slightly amusing throughout and First song Wake Up And Make Love With Me is a strong seedy opener but music-wise everything else is somewhat moth-eaten and needs chucking out for a different pub-rock wardrobe. Light 3.0.
As british as it gets
Jodå, för tjyven.

I would say that it was a bit too vulgar to listen to at work, but I quite enjoyed it all the same
It’s just ok
Jesus, I've listened to this a couple times and I have no clue what to think. Part of me thinks this was funny as shit. I laughed, I cringed at times, I thought WTF at times, but it was certainly entertaining and irritating at the same time. It was better than the last 3 albums so I give a 3 and move on. I think there may come a day I play a couple tunes for some friends and family just to see their reaction. 3
I had mixed feelings about this. It made more sense when I considered it within the context of British music of the time - particularly the London scene: you can hear the first stirrings of multiculturalism in the effort to incorporate influences from e.g. reggae. I've never really loved New Wave music as a whole, though: while I recognize its importance in expanding the possibilities of alternative music, I've always felt like much of its peculiarity was done for the sake of quirkiness, rather than because it led to better music. I don't think this album will change that view, but I could imagine giving it a few more tries to be sure.
A sort of funky Brit rock. Interesting and a little fun.
Don't ask me to describe or define this. All I know is I kept saying, "this is stupid" and then sang along and I liked it.
A delightful discovery.
eclectic album that’s just fun to listen to.
3.75
I enjoyed this album. It is not serious in many ways, although it is well done and professional, it seems more like Ian Dury is in this for fun. And if so, well done! It was fun! I laughed out loud several times, sometimes in the same song! I can't imagine outside of good fun that anyone would be a super fan, simply because it is not... different enough from similar sounding work that is just a step up, and it has a rawness that sometimes throws one off a bit. Anyhow, pretty good, and if someone is in the mood for a fun thing to listen to...
not bad
okay album, a little crude, decent quirky sound.
British Frank Zappa.
kinda quirky mit dem Akzent, gute Musik, würde ich mir nochmal anhören aber werde ich wsl nicht
A lot of different styles and sounds pleasant. Still would not listen again.
Fun
Throughout this album I didn’t have much idea of what was happening. And I was here for it, but I can’t shake the idea that Mr. Dury just wanted to mimic The Kinks with more cockney. Solid punk and funk that I’m not in a hurry to revisit.
Never heard of him before today. It's kind of funny British rock music with a catchy beat. Not bad at all and I'm really glad that I listened to it. Not something that I would listen to all the time but would be good under the right circumstances. It's kind of in the same vein as Thundercat's Drunk album.
some nice slow chill rock witth good guitar solos. Prob wont listen again though
an anthropomorphic fish going into musical detail about his questionable body count
sex and drugs and rock and roll
This was fun. Dury makes no effort to obscure his Essex accent - which I love. The lyrics are playful (and yes, pretty horny). Lots of funk influence, good stuff. ✅✅
Some good tracks, some not so good, total legend though :)
It was a somewhat unsettling listen, lyric-wise. It had an interesting energy to it. 6/10.
Solid. A weird, surprisingly compelling pastiche. And funny
I think I liked this, very demanding though.
Quirky. Took me a few songs to get into it, but I somewhat liked what he was cooking here.
Ehh, not the best thing in the world. It’s meh.
I like when it gets punkier. Overall I find it a bit hard to rate. It's kind of a mess but almost brilliant in that sense. I can give a generous 3 I suppose.
Witziger Sound
Some songs were interesting. Overall lack of hooks and dynamic range
This is the kinda album I expect to be hidden on this list. There is so much genuinely interesting music here and some very funny and interesting lyrics and also so much of it is entirely off putting in a compelling way. What the hell
I didn't really like the lyrics or his voice, but the music was varied and exciting! I liked "Sweet Gene Vincent", or at least the instrumental parts of it.
I like your funny words, magic man I have absolutely no clue what's going on here but it was strange and I had a mostly nice time
Why are all the lyrics in this album so sus. Other than that, all the instruments are played really well and can't fault it. Still a 3/5 for just how weird these lyrics are.
Varies between funky/groovy, jazzy and rocked. None of it is very interesting too me, but the first half more so than the last.
I know exactly what you're thinking, "I've always wanted to know what it would sound like, if Bowie made punk music". Actually you know what, you're right. To be honest I wasn't thinking that either. This album isn't mind blowingly fantastic, but it's definitely better than most of the reviews will have you think. If you can learn to look past the god awful lyrics that is, I must admit that does make this album a lot harder to appreciate.
May 9, 2024 HL: “Sweet Gene Vincent”, “Blockheads”, “Plaistow Patricia”, “Sex and Drugs” (bonus) Anything but mindless good taste
A lil cheesey 70s
I can tell this would be more even more fun if I knew the terms and slang
Recently well done music with bizarre lyrics and weird punk aesthetic vocals that seem to be boarding on a joke album. 2.5 stars
Fun, but not memorable.
Pretty funky, pretty weird
Explicit but entertaining.
I remember buying this the day it was released and being both happy and slightly disappointed at the same time. A wide range of sounds, some good some not so. Loved Ian but tis album took a bit of time to get used to
I'm split on this. It's both something i like, and something i dont really like. I like a lot of the more funky stuff The lyrics on Plaistow Patricia have not aged well at all. At times the melodies are nice and interesting, at times it's a bit guff Shall we all say high 2 and move on? high 2 or maybe a 3
Well blimey guvnuh, if at ain't the cheekiest bit muzhik I dun 'erd in a right bit! Wow that was such a thick accent lol. Fun sometimes funny and cheeky lyrics. Fun and funky
2.5/5. Meh, not bad but not good.
This album is so horny. It’s getting a 3 because it’s hilarious.
The noted punk vocalist splits off from the Blockheads to pay tribute to his hometown and the exceedingly strange people in it. Abrasive but weirdly sweet.
This is a lot of fun. Great simple rock and roll songs, very late 70s sound, interesting lyrics. I like it a lot, without loving it.
On first listen I was underwhelmed but I really enjoyed it on second listen. An easy 3*
Enjoyed this. Who knows it may have become a 4 with more listens... but a solid 3.
I enjoyed how many different styles this album went through.
Both entertaining, with a mix of styles, and irritating (I don't get much of the humour), so I end up at 3 stars.
Weird, mostly in a vaguely annoying way
Vika biisi on silti aika hauska.
The “singing”: 1. Vocals are dreadful. Everything else: 5. This is a fun album, the music is quite good, catchy, but not overly trite. This is a decent punk album. Overall, it’s a very strong 3.
Bon, le monde on vraiment l’air de pas aimer ça, mais honnêtement j’hais pas ça
Liked. Fast rock. Late seventies 3
Ian Dury, A sad loss to the UK punk scene, a seminal album of the 70s which reflects the working class feeling and lyrics that capture the sentiment.
Fun album.

I really enjoyed the music, no matter how eclectic. Maybe that added to the appeal. The vocals were so far off base it was almost a zero star album, however.
I can see this one being divisive. Lots of humour - (not humor), so will not appeal to those less enamoured with the UK. Ian Dury has a distinctive voice and a way with words, but it's the bass playing that stands out here.
I didn’t catch much of the lyrics but all the songs had a good mix of sounds, and were a little catchy.
the first song was ok
I enjoyed \"Partial to your Abracadabra\"
This album was weird af
This one seems to polarize people and Americans don't get it. Very Essex. The guy is a poet and his band are really tight. Quirky groovy fun.
Idk! De va annorlunda, originellt o int tråkigt men idk om ja gilla de... still 3
Good coarse fun, of its time.
cute.
For some reason he sounds older than he is.

Generally, the Stiff Records label released a lot of interesting and innovative bands, as many of them went on to larger labels and bigger fame. One of the artists on the label that I never cared for was Ian Dury. Yeah, some of his songs were quirky and mildly amusing, but it was lightweight and didn't carry the appeal or originality, as many other British artists of the era. There are some good songs, many memorable, on New Boots...but some were uncomfortable and creepy (lead off track, "Wake Up and..."). Overall, worth the listen, but there are better Stiff albums that should be on this list.
Ok
Sex&Drugs&Rocknroll is by far the best song, some dross on the album
I'd never heard of this guy before. Some of the funkier numbers were kinda fun.
I knew of "Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n Roll," but not that it was Ian Dury. The songs that were about a specific person got kind of tedious, particularly when the accent got more cockney. I assume that was what he was going for singing like that, but it just got tiresome. I've heard a lot of British sing, but their accents didn't come through as much as Ian's seems to. Maybe they were more singing and his was more of a talky kind of voice, I don't know. But that is sore of the punk mentality isn't it? That is doesn't have to be perfect (or even... good), but just that it can be done by anybody. Top tracks : Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n Roll, Blockheads, I'm Partial To Your Abracadabra
Well, this is certainly different. Some tracks remind mit of Madness (the band, not the state of mind), some of Elvis Costello. It's not bad and at times quite original. It's just not my cup of tea. 2.5/5
I really want to love it and give it 4 or 5 stars. It's weird and obnoxious and I love weird and obnoxious. But it doesn't quite grab me enough. It strays into annoying at times.
Hard to listen to. Like 2-3 songs.
ok
Successfully entertaining in parts. I come awake / with a gift for womankind is a strong and seriously ridiculous opening. Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is a super strong conclusion. Quite a bit wide of the mark in many other parts such as Billericay Dickie and Blockheads. Some songs I just can't decide. The music itself is pretty good throughout. Ludicrously British.
Interesting album
-um this is such a funny album name -never heard of this guy -first song is based and valid as hell -that piano is popping OFF -love this sax (?) coming in it sound so COOL -the array of instruments and sounds in these songs is really what i enjoy -and his accent is so much fun!!!! -i like the more rock sounding songs the best -okay the laughing laughing at the end of if i was with a woman was kinda creepy -overall an interesting album. some elements are not my taste and some were
Some great songs, some terrible songs
That was partially fun though
David Fauxie (respectfully) Quite mad that to admit that half of these songs I just didn't vibe with, but half of them are just so damningly fun and have sexy guitar riffs (cough cough Plaistow Patricia). I definitely want to rate it closer to a 4 but I have to give it a 3 for the time being.
Really enjoy the music. Singing detracts from the album to me. Lyrics and singing give me a 70’s Bloodhound Gang vibe
This album was a slow roll. I wasn't too into it at first, but it got progressively better.
I enjoyed it on the whole, had a strange feeling of nostalgia for a time when I didn't even exist. I liked 'my old man' maybe partly because this album sort of made me think of my own old man.
Some of the lyrics were fun, however I think I just find his singing style too annoying to ever listen again
Engaging mix of funk and rock'n'roll with Dury's amusing lyrics and delivery. If you don't just collect the hit singles, then this is a good enough collection as taster.
Vulgärer, selbstironischer Zeitgenosse mit dickem Cockney-Akzent. Textlich wurde ich oft an die Sleaford Mods erinnert. Rock'n'Roll im besten Sinne.
This album was really mixed for me. It's got all these cool elements mixed in, like disco and funk. Some of the lyrics are good too, but a lot of them are that cloying style of British humor where they expect you to laugh at them despite the fact that they aren't actually saying or doing anything funny. I feel like better vocals would make this an incredible album, but perhaps that would be messing with the alchemy. There's certainly plenty of musical significance to the album, which has a lot of early punk elements mixed in with the more danceable music elements 3/5 Important, but it could be more pleasant to listen to
I really could have lived without this album. I've definitely heard worse here. Music was sometimes nice but damn... that vocals were real downgrade.
Ik had het idee dat ik naar een soort proto-Blur aan het luisteren was. Best grappig, maar ook niet geweldig.
Pretty interesting without being amazing.
this was a baffling inclusion but admittedly i think I'm just not the target audience. a lot of the references and subtleties went way over my head, and i wish i could appreciate it more. still, as i see it, it's a weird album for weird people, and there's nothing wrong with that. this guy is an unapologetically horny brit, and i applaud his genre explorations from track to track. the lyrics don't do much for me, particularly the overtly sexual ones, but whatever. still not sure how this makes the 1001 list but there are worse albums on the list than this one by far. favorites: sweet gene vincent, sex & drugs & rock & roll
Dury's influence was more potent than his material. Still, you can't help but love Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll
I want to say above a 3 but not quite a 4 for me. But Razzle in my Pocket, Sex Drugs and Rock and Roll are awesome tracks
Is there a name for songs that are old and kind of meh? We've heard "Sex & Drugs & Rock'n'Roll" before; there is no need to put the whole album on the list.
Not bad but too silly and unnecessary for this list.
What a peculiar album, not sure what to think about it but definitely interesting entertainment
he committed to his own lane. i respect that.
This guy is a nut, but a nut can write cool songs too! I’m no big Ian Dury fan, I don’t think I ever will. But I can enjoy his songs, just not too much at a time. Still, there’s a hook to the songs and he was a huge influence for the sound of pubrock and britpop! 7 out of 10
I’m so conflicted about Ian Dury. There are songs I love by him, and songs I hate by him. Half the reviews of this album talk about what a great songwriter he is, and the other half talk about what a pile of shit these songs are. And everyone’s correct.
2-3
Stompin' band at the height of their powers, and a charismatic front man. Sometimes the lyrics are little overly clever (Dury never saw an easy rhyme he didn't like; Billericay Dickie is an example there), and the line between sexy and sexist is often crossed, and has dated poorly (Wake Up and Make Love With Me is a case study in why we need consent training). Still, Dury is trying to shock and provoke a sense of fun. It's hard to be too outraged when you're dancing, after all. Dodgy sexual politics aside, this is a fun listen and the cover photo is ace. Would buy.
Wake Up, Sweet Gene Vincent, I’m Partial, Clevor Trever, If I Was With a Woman and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. Starts off well and then gets loud and annoying and then ends well. British guys should stick to this not rap.
even more barely ok british guy music. side one is mostly cheeks. side two is better. plaistow patricia, blackmail man
Decently enjoyable. FS: Blackmail, Sweet Gene
3,5
This was a weird album. I really liked the guitar, but really hated the guys voice. The middle of the album was really good, but the end turned into some garbage punk? I would give all my favorite parts of this album a 4, but the last two songs + his voice on every song takes it down to a 3.
I didn't know that it was possible to go from really weird erotica, to punk, to funk all in the same album but this insane man was able to do it. At first I was going to have to knock the album, but honestly the creativity and uniqueness won me back by the end. The only thing I could think in the beginning was that his voice sounded like the parody of Randy Newman from Family Guy
That was weird. Didn't hate it as much as I thought I would after listening to the first couple of lines, but I also never want to listen to it again. 3.5 stars
A strange one - novelty album well past its use by date? Or a sort of pioneer. There's a fair amount of 'ewww'. I only knew his couple of hits. Almost a 2, because I didn't really enjoy listening to it - but scrapes in with a 3 due to originality
Tämä sai hyvälle tuulelle.
Vekkuli levy. Ei ihan kolmea, mutta pyöristyy ylöspäin viihdyttävyytensä ansiosta
I came into this album with no expectations as I had never heard of this album or Ian Dury even and in all honesty I came out of listening to this album pretty much the same as I went in. This to me felt like a very standard 70's British punk album. That is not to say it is bad by any means just average. I definitely don't think it is on the caliber of a lot of the other albums I have heard from this list and I think if you just included the standard picks for this genre/scene: "The Clash (self titled)", "London's Calling", "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols", "Live At The Witch Trials", "Unknown Pleasures" and "Pink Flag", you would have covered the genre and the scene nicely. I even think The Undertones self titled is a better fit and I am not even a huge fan of that album either. This album is a little more off the beaten path and I don't think it fits the list. Still solid with some good songs at the start but after "Clevor Trever", the album falls off to me. Still good but not something I would see myself coming back to, 7/10.
This was a fun lil album. It felt like a bloke from your local pub decided to make some music about all of the regulars he interacts with. It’s crude and goofy and somewhat catchy and suppose that’s all you need. I didn’t listen to the bonus tracks or anything but billericay dickie was a bop. What I imagine the British version of colt 45 to be.
Old school proto-punk. Decent.
I wanted to like this one, and in parts I did, but the misogyny in it was pretty heavy. I was surprised at the end where it just became a punk song though. That song was good. It was sorta a mish-mash of things, but not in a good way (for me). 2.5/5
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Blackmail Man (10) 2 - Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (11) 3 - Blockheads (8)
Super weird album!! I feel it gets better the longer you listen to it as you get into a state of mind where you can appreciate dirty lyrics with mixed genres and english accent lol Saved tracks: I'm Partial To Your Abracadabra, Billericay Dickie, Blockheads
I mean I like Ian Dury, but top 1000? Of all time?
Meh. 3/5
What a weird but fun album
Interesting blend of styles and insight into the birth of a genre.
Decent 6/10
Feels a lot less of a novelty record than some of Ian Dury's big hits. It tails off towards the end, but overall enjoyable. Much more melodic and grown up than I was expecting. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Wake Up And Make Love With Me Date listened: 22/03/23
Bit of fun init
Top horny weirdo album
The first song was quite a hard listen, just the lyrics gave me some secondhand embarrassment and reminded me of that recording of Princes Charles dirty talking Camilla Parker Bowles. I think the album is a little weird on first listen but as you get further in, you also get more used to the sound of the artist.
Ik heb iets met die Ian Dury! Het zijn eigenlijk bijna carnavaleske nummers maar zijn stem fascineert me
Different and interesting, I enjoyed it
Old Wine in New Bottles
Had some fun moments. Got a little stale by the end, and didn't necessarily feel all that coherent as an album. The groove of the first song got my hopes up, but I felt like it never really got back there again. 6/10
I've never heard of this album, nor of Ian Dury before listening. It's weird, and a hard one to rate. I'm not a fan of the monotone, heavily English accented "singing" voice he uses on some of the songs, for example, Clever Trevor. It reminds me of the Squeeze song, Cool for Cats. On the other hand, you've got three (I think) songs where he changes it up and sounds like the Sex Pistols. (I looked it up, and this album came out a month before the Sex Pistols album.) It's not something I'd listen to often, but I'll give it a 3/5 at least for originality. Favorite song: Sweet Gene Vincent (or maybe Blockheads?)
Pretty odd and very cockney
Ian Dury is one of my dad's favourites. This album is absolutely a lot with lyrical and instrumental mayhem. Ian is a silly man with a serious streak, and I have a bit of a soft spot, even if there's inevitably a bit of dodginess in there. Like a fun midpoint between the storytelling comic singers of the 1960s and britpop. I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra is a title and a half. Some of these songs just straight up slap (Blockheads for example). 'The album's title derives from Dury's habit of buying clothes second hand and refers to the only items of clothing he insisted on buying new' lmao
Feels like a worse version of Scott walker
soooo strange. what’s even stranger is that I actually enjoyed it
Yea it was alright
Huh. Well that was something. I'd never heard Ian Dury before so I had no idea what to expect. Having heard it I'm still not sure what to expect. I kind of liked it and hated it in equal measure and often for the same reasons. I guess my overall feeling is that a little Ian Dury goes a long way. I found myself getting impatient in the middle of songs where only seconds earlier I was thinking it was pretty cool. The musicians were terrific throughout. And also, it was cool to hear a record that so obviously influenced Blur. Overall: good show, Ian. And also please stop.
I was going to rate this a 2 but the quality of the backing band and a few of the lyrics (too few!) bumped it to a 3.
Lidt skørt, men det fungerer alligevel. Gammelt rock, funk, punk
interesting
I knew one song by Ian Dury before listening, so I had a little bit of an idea of what I was getting myself into. I knew it was gonna be kind of weird, and it certainly was. There were some parts I liked, and some parts that were a bit much for me. This seems like something I'd like more upon revisiting. For now, it's getting a three. My favourite songs were Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, My Old Man, and Billericay Dickie.
I went into this thinking I'd really enjoy this. But I've listened to the album 3 times now and I must miss something. It's ok, but not as mind-blowing as some people make it out to be. Enjoyable, but not more than that.
Sad no rhythm stick
Weird. I guess I could see why this would be mentioned together with the Clash or whatever, but this is way stranger. Some OK tracks, but not sure I'm coming back to listen this one again.
Kind of interesting, in a old sort of way. His voice was pretty annoying but I can see it having it’s place.
i knew this was going to very british from there being a song called "billericay dickie" and yet, it still somehow exceeded my expectations of how british i thought it was going to be. it's a very fun album (especially the pub rock tracks) though some of the lyrics are way too goofy and/or horny.
Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is one of my absolute favorite songs, but this album is pretty meh compared to that one song. I like a few other tunes but I would definitely recommend skipping the album and start with the single.
Funny
3.5/5. Weird but fun listen, interesting lyrics.
Wtf is this cover. I like the start of the first song rn tho, can’t lie. Is this guy mentally handicapped? It’s honestly quite goood. Trending towards a 3 rn. It’s a 2.5, closer to 3 than 2 tho. However, it feels wrong that it’s one star from Kiwanuka, which was more like a 4.5 than a 4. Happy to finish listening, it was okay, nothing I’m going to relisten to tho. It has potential to grow on me tho.
Good old cockney rock n roll.
I think I've heard this album before on a "best of new wave" list or something. This guy seems like a very jokester artist who doesn't take himself too seriously. A few catchy songs but at a certain point in the album it feels like novelty. maybe that's the point? not bad but not something I would seek out again
Weird
Some interesting tracks but mostly just a lot of British yelling.
