Interesting. I didn't mid it as background music. Nothing that really caught my attention spectacularly or would make me seek them out. 2.

nothing happens there are no songs really just pleasant noise for a long period of time I feel I am being very generous in giving it two but I have heard worse albums on the list.

Glorified music for studying.

This album caught me on the wrong day. I had a driveway to shovel and was excited for the chance to listen to my album while I did it. This kind of music can be saved by vocals but without any it's boring as shit. It's all one long intro. 1.5

please abolish 20 minute songs

Didn't even know what genre this was for the first few minutes. Turns out, Earth meets jazz. I love Earth. I love post rock. I don't love jazz. So I don't love this. Along tt Bank of Rivers the best song as it sounded a bit Western. On other tracks it was like they'd just discovered xylophones and glockenspiels and wanted to shoehorn them in to half the songs.

meh. 2.5 stars

Interesting in places

Interesting concept but I can’t say I found it that enjoyable. I doubt I’ll ever listen to this again.

In places it was good background music but it really lacks any punch and ends up being quite dull.

Rather bittersweet this one. We wait patiently for 473 albums and FINALLY we get some (kind of) post-rock. Shame is, this is very dull, barely getting up above walking pace. Please let there be some ‘Mogwai’ and ‘Godspeed You! Black Emperor’ coming up to save the day and the genre ratings. We desperately need some proper quiet/loud/quiet/loud. Please list, I’m begging!!!

Fine background music. But overall a real yawn.

Day722 -meh, i don’t care for instrumental albums but it does kinda sound like band of horses if you get rid of the stupid keyboard sounds

Don’t mind instrumental stuff, though this was a bit weird at times. Better than I anticipated though

If someone told me this was the soundtrack to an Italian art house film about watching paint dry (the extended directors cut) I wouldn't be surprised.

Good as a film soundtrack maybe but definitely not my thing

I don’t like 20 min songs

I think parts of this are kind of pretty, but there's definitely some aspects of it that kind of seem a bit aimless. Instrumental stuff is always a bit of a challenge for me. Going 2.5 stars.

Mostly just random noises with an occasional interesting melody. 2/5

Len Houmous once owned a tortoise. He sold it to Blue Peter in 1981 to raise money for his kids to go to uni. 2.1 4/6 The Taut and Tame

Yeah, not for me. Too crazy for background music, too boring for anything else.

Parts of the first song were headache inducing. Like audio incense. Still stuck it out though.

There are no words? This is elevator music.

Well, someone had fun plinking away on the keyboard and playing with the settings. Doesn't add up to something particularly listenable in the end, unfortunately. Last track is an exception.

I just don't know what this is trying to achieve.

This was alright. For a normal album of music I would give it about 3.5 stars, but for a 1001 best albums of all time, I'd say maybe 2. It was kinda neat, and I listened twice to make sure I didn't miss anything mind-blowing and it was short enough, but I didn't really enjoy it much. 2 stars.

The first track is trash, the rest of the album is pretty good. Unfortunately,, the first track is approx 50% of the album play time

I love NOISES

fucking annoying pinging sound in a 20 minute song? please end my misery. Genuinely so not enjoyable why did you do this. It is like an ice pick on my skull. This has to be a social experiment. the rest of the album was fine. nothing special at all. 2/5

Nothing amazing, although it works to have in the background when you study.

Pretentious is putting it politely

Background, lobby, or elevator music, but not worthy of this list.

I’m confused

meh. I just don't get the artsy post-whatever flavors of music. I bet Thom Yorke really likes these guys. really boring

forgettable background music. why is it on the list?

This is background music at best, but then again I’m not even sure for what. Would seem out of place at a pub, not loud enough for events, too much for an elevator. Just doesn’t really seem to fit at all. As a piece it’s fine, but again I just think having a 20 minute song is heavily self indulgent and I don’t think that the quality warrants a relisten tbh

One of those instrumental albums that just fall into the background??? Theres pockets of interest and those moments are sick but overall it’s nothing to write home about.

I understand why the list pickers would have chosen this album, but for the average music listener, ya... nah. Some moments on this album were quite nice, like Glass Museum, but that was more of an exception to the album than the norm. I just felt that a lot of random sounds were placed together that didn't feel coherent, which is kind of the purpose of the album, but does not suit my listening style.

Strange

Mogwai/boards of Canada

The constant electrical pulse in the last 10+ minutes of djed are annoying af.

Dreamy pseudo-psychedelia.

Pleasant enough but a bit Muzacky. I like ambient music and this borders on that genre but a pale comparison to Brian Eno. Worryingly, although recorded in 1996 this does sound like it could have been produced by AI. A frightening glimpse of what’s around the corner? 2/5 30/10/25

taustamusiikkia ilman vokaaleja. tunnelmallista meininkiä ei siinä mitään.

Weird ambient music. OK for while working I guess, but nothing incredibly interesting about it.

пълнеж

Background music. Not really for me. Got some work done to it though...

Not good.

Some interesting sounds, and some moments that border on prog rock, but mostly just repetitive, boring riffs.

diudnt like it

Why is this here?

Instrumental bien mais instrumental

Disjointed noise. Nope

Eh fine but immemorable bg music

I am a bit behind on my 1001 albums to hear before I die challenge so don't mind me if I try and get all caught up here real quick. Recently I was assigned yet another project I had absolutely no idea or expectations with Tortoise's Millions Now Living Will Never Die. This borderline Ambient/Post-Rock project is a really weird blend that I surprisingly got down with a good bit. This project feels like it should have more meat on its' bone, but is in actuality a pretty lean project with not too much to it outside of some very subtle compositions. With no vocals whatsoever, the performers really have to carry their weight with their compositions, and I'd argue they do a decent to good job throughout this project's runtime. Even during Djed I can't lie this album was losing me a bit. I respect the hell out of having an entirely instrumental album with such soft and gentle instrumentals, but sometimes it comes off as more background music than really thoughtful pieces painting pictures of a landscape. I like what Tortoise was going for here, but I want something a bit more focused next time around. Maybe TNT will be just that, but I'll have to wait another day before I get around to it...

Maybe 2.5? Boring, but mostly not abrasive

100% instrumental. Fine for the background. I want a bit more from my music. 1.5 outta 5

I am partial to ambient music. Nothing completely awful about this album but not groundbreaking either. I enjoyed the two shorter songs. The other songs felt way too long and there wasn’t any discerning beginning, middle, end.

The first song on this record remind me of a modern day Peanuts. There is this random piano part that triggered that thought. It’s all instrumental. It’s a bit of everything. Noise. Post Rock. Fusion. It reminded me of a band I like called Mogwai. I found out the title of the record is a phrase used by Jehovahs witnesses. Which, I think they use in jest. Kind of funny. Anyways, not really my thing. It’s interesting for sure but the replay ability is not there.

It sounds like this band/album is important because of their influence on other artists, more so than directly. I find the album to be extremely "meh". It reminds me of Philip Glass or other kind of experimental instrumental style things, but far less interesting.

gentle instrumental progressive rock. a reallybold 20 minute long opening track. 2/5

It was just okay background music.

Starts with Radioheads worst song Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box Ends with a slow Portishead song without Beth Gibbons tl;dr I don't get it

Not sure why this is on here

Don't get this at all. 2*

Two may be a bit harsh but I likely won't be listening to this album again. Left me in a state of "?".

I don't get it. Just meanders around without really getting into any kind of story with the instrumental.

Mellow, unremarkable for me

This album helped me realize that post rock just isn't my thing. I can recognize the technical and experimental virtuosity going on here. I'm just not interested in it.

This album was boring as fuck. Will not play back not even that happy I heard in the first place.

Electronica isn’t my thing unless it’s really good electronica. This ain’t the latter

This album is fine and unique but just all too boring. Nothing particularly offensive but also nothing more than background music. Hardly "one of the most influential music groups of the last 40 years" as their Spotify description reads. 4/10 (2/5)

If there was a soundtrack for a head cold this would be it.

Its pretty, it is interesting at times but overall just music that is there. This isn't the first album we have that has followed a format I find a bit confusing. What is with one really really long song, that has multiple parts that could be broken down into multiple songs that are then followed by multiple shortish songs. I get that there needs to be a certain length to a typical album but if you like long songs do two long songs or focus on short songs. To me I automatically assume the long one is your Opus and the rest is just filler.

Pretty good, just a long instrumental álbum. Felt like an indie rock album that skipped forever and no one ever sang. Decent but didn't wow me

Kinda boring noises.

Background noise; not offensive yet certainly not special

Not bad background music at work, but wouldn’t listen to this otherwise

Kinda weird alternative.

Okay post rock

I usually like this kind of music, but this was just bland, uninteresting, and boring.

For art to be worth seeing, something must happen, or it must be beautiful. An action movie has something happen, but isn't beautiful. Alice Munro's stories are beautiful, but nothing happens. Rzewski's variations on Pueblo Unido are beautiful and have things occur in it. This album fulfills neither requirement. Fortunately, it doesn't sound actively bad and thus it gets a 2.

just a bit boring

This started off okay but then went very prog. At which point it lost me.

Not for me, found the album boring

Track 1 lost me around minute 14... Some good stuff in the back half, but it is really nothing special. Didn't need to hear it before I died.

A couple of interesting ideas but too jazzy for me

Was hoping to get into this...it hits some of my reference points. But... Too noodly...too academic..too...stars.

Some interesting sounds being exported, but really not a lot going on here for my taste. Like a modern version of 70’s prog rock, I found it incredibly boring and really have no desire to ever listen to any of their work again.

Not for me...but certainly no place on this list...

Not what I expected

Two stars for The Taut and Time. Rest are Jeb Bush face.

...But they should. Millions must die. Billions, no less. Septenvigintillions. Entire galaxies must perish or however my shitty musicmaxxing chudcel life goes. Djed is the main draw of the album - a 21 faaaaarking minute track. I have a storied, vitriolic hatred of "long songs" as they were, though this one doesn't bug me. Is every second of the song deliberate and purposeful? Not really. There are many moments where my attention waned. Were there any good bits? Yeah. The backing guitars are consistently the best part of the song. The quirky electronic sound that comes in at the seven minute mark is pretty funky. The Another Green World instrument from the twelve minute mark is alright (I still have no clue what that instrument is) and I like the sudden shift towards a reverberating electronic sound near the end of the piece, even if that stretch of the song goes on for way too long. What can I say? I don't bother the track and this track doesn't bother me. The rest of the album doesn't really go anywhere, though there are some good moments. Glass Museum is nice - likely my favourite song on the album. After the extensive blueballing of the previous track it's nice to get a guitar-based track. I also enjoy the spacy atmosphere on Dear Grandma and Grandpa. That song sounds nice with headphones on. Let's have a lookie at the bookie. Uhhhh, nothing really of note beside them being hipsters and multi-instrumentalists. A cursory look at Wikipedia reveals that these guys are icons and pioneers of post-rock, which is a genre of music that I have a hard time identifying. I don't know how I'd categorise this album, really. It doesn't sound like much of anything. In any case TNT, the band's next album, was where they hit it big with the critics. I'm curious to know what these guys sound like at their best, so I've taken their name down and hope to give the album a listen soon. As for this album being in the book, I think it's a solid inclusion. No complaints from me. Post-rock is worthy of representation and these guys appear to have earned their stripes in the scene.

Ke plan. Esch jetzt halt eifach so chli musig. Guet för e Hendergrond ig aber ech has jetzt nie wörk gfühlt ond ke gross logische ufbau oder öppis ähnlechs bemerkt.

Rambling folksy instrumentals

Nice instrumental album. A bit forgettable but interesting to listen to

Sound like they're warming up.

Really weird listen. Overall decent enougfhfrom track to track, but never really goes anywhere or does anything besides ambient melodies for the full runtime. The 20-minute opener is also the worst song, should not have been included. If you like ambient instrumentals this is a good album, otherwise pass

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

A few decent moments, but a lot of this just doesn’t feel like music. Djed meandered through five ideas without cohesion, and much of the album felt like sound design exercises. Cold, clinical, and more of an art project than an album.

Boring music about nothing that goes nowhere. Good enough as background music but why would I have to listen to this before I die?

Les and his Bontempi keyboard from Vic Reeves Big Night Out finally released an album of uninteresting noodling. I will never even think about this album again.

Djed - Cool progression from atmospheric to active. I like the keyboard tone too. Glass Museum - Same on this one! Also a distinct 90s sound to the second half of it. A Survey - dull The Taut and Tame - pretty fun in a hectic way. Dear Grandma and Grandpa - fairly dull. Along the Banks of Rivers - fairly dull - disappointing end to the album.

I'm certain I did not need to hear this album. It's purely instrumental, ambient, and just... drones on and on. I don't know why this was included on the list and I'm glad it's over

No private session used for Spotify and no idea on what I was getting into. I did not get into this instrumental snore.

wieder einmal schwierig, worte zu finden für ein nicht einfaches album, mit genreloser, avantgardistischer musik.

Not unpleasant but plodded. so very plodded.

Like instrumental rock techno, each track slow and repetitive with variations on a theme. I can see why people might like this, but I find it boring.

A very low-key combination of soundscapes loosely strung together as an album. First track runs a bit too long and has a few off-points where you think it's ending but you're only six minutes in or it starts skipping and you think your speaker is messed up but it starts right back up for another twenty minutes. Lot's of weird, scratchy textures and chimes. I think overall it's pretty interesting but it's not something I would put on as music. It's more like background effects to fall asleep or do really focused work. It's probably like a blind person watching a movie (they only hear the score); it could be like a soundtrack to daily life and I like it for that aspect. It has some really groovy spots that I wish were explored further and had a more prominent focus throughout. I like the vibe but not the album name. The Evangelist/Jehovahs/Watch Tower Bible faith aspect is lost on me. Slow and rough like a Tortoise but it gets there. 2.30 for repeat hand drum slaps.

Couldn't get into them. Also really funny to start out with a 20 min song

never heard of. a little too weird

The first track is certainly a handful. The mid-90's was an interesting time to release a record like this. "Post-rock" as a subgenre was and still is largely underground (and to be honest, I'm still not really sure what this genre entails). After listening to this record, I now gather that it's experimental/ambient music, with accompanying guitar melodies. I guess this particular record was a catalyst for this genre as it pertained to the mainstream? Neat, I guess. Didn't do much for me otherwise.

Cool instrumentals

It's okay, doesn't set my world on fire as far as instrumental stuff goes. Mid 2s.

I can confirm that this is music and it does exist.

Not my cup of tea 🤷‍♀️

An entire album of song intros, even if a few are pretty interesting, most of the songs on this album just left me saying "ok when is the good part of the song gonna kick in?" 'Along the Banks of Rivers' is pretty great though.

Slow and atmospheric but not quite ambient. They had a good sound so I didn't hate it, but I was still bored.

Another album I feel without any sort of context just doesn't make any sense. Was it important to a movement or a pivotal album in a specific genre or scene? Without doing research on it, I have no clue. As it is, standing alone, contextless, it's pretty uninspiring and uninteresting.

instr. electr., 1996 -> 2

Ehhh, I liked it at times and HATED it at times. You got a nice weird jam / jazz-ish thing going on then BOOM here’s some dead noise. Then we’re jamming, jamming, jamming, Fucking Surprise here’s a track with some god damn crickets. Probably would have liked it more if I was super baked, but then I would be searching my house for crickets.

I like my beer cold, my TV loud, and my post-rock SPRAWLING. Kind of a snooze fest, if I'm being honest. I saw these dudes live once - I think it was kind of a big deal. The show was decent...better than this album.

Meh decent drumming not my scene too Tom for me

Instrumental rock jazz - Some interesting sounds but no memorable melodies - Attempt at experimental but fell a bit flat

I read all the raving reviews before listening. What do people hear in this that is so amazing? I don’t get it.

An alright album but no songs really stood out.

Ok, the first song having 20 minutes is just unjustified. Not a bad song, but it could have been done in the first minutes really. The following songs were ok, but kinda boring.

boah, null mein Stil. Wenn ich Hintergrundgeräusche haben will nehme ich lieber Walgesang oder Meeresrauschen

I wasn't under the influence of whatever it would have taken to make this album interesting, I was bored.

Literally nothing?

This was like a soundtrack to a movie I’d forget about as soon as I left the theater.

Post Rick very experimental

More than a few parts of this album seemed like good intros to songs. Some songs sounded like wimpy versions of songs I'd like by harder bands. But in the end this is an electronic jazz fusion album. Maybe it's good if that's what you're into. I'm not.

I enjoy a good instrumental song, but a whole ass album of experimental instrumental songs is a little too much

This music is described as “post rock.“ If that’s the case, I truly hope rock ‘n’ roll never dies!

Muy indie muy alternativo, creo que me gustaría más con un equipo muy bueno, pero ahora me aburrí un poco

It's okay. Sounds like a lot of other okay stuff.

Saai... liftmuziek die niet negatief opvalt, maar dat is het dan wel. Is hier iets bijzonders aan?

Post-Rock is at its most interesting when the music moves between tension and release. There doesn't seem to be much of that here. Other similar acts like Explosions In The Sky and Godspeed You! Black Emperor use this effect to make their atmospheric experimentation sound more "musical". Without tension, release, or typical song structure, this just becomes background music. That's fine for soundtracks and dinner parties, but not dedicated listening. A have a couple of Tortoise's later albums, which are much better than this one. Those albums would be in the 4-ish star range, so this one gets bumped down to two.

I remember reading glowing reviews for this and listening to it in the bookstore. I realized then that I don't always agree with the reviews. 1.5 stars.

A bit boring tbh.

i don’t know, doesn’t seem like much

Didn't hate it, but found it very bland. Maybe it would grow on me with repeated listens, but one listen left me feeling uninspired.

Best Song: Glass Museum. Nicely proggy in a way that didn't overstay its welcome. I especially liked the xylophone(?) as the counterpoint to the heavier guitar rhythms. Worst Song: Djed. Sounds like a dystopian cartoon war played out on an old CRT TV. Overall: Another example of an album that feels like it needs to be "experimental" so badly that it can't tolerate to linger on an interesting. With an album like this, I always wonder what its fans are doing while they listen to it. What situation is enhanced by this?

This is yet another instrumental post-rock album, and I guess I don't like the post-rock music genre, as I've yet to hear one that's good. 2/5 (for at least having coherent music and not random sounds and bangs and electronic shit thrown in for weirdness).

It was okay

I don't hate it but I don't particularly like it either.

An interesting listen. Likely not something I'd ever think to play again, but I love when my 1001 Albums project throws me stuff I've never heard of before! Parts of it felt like background music for 90s Cartoon Network shows, and I mean that as a compliment.

Sounds like a jam session from a beginner garage band

"Aight, we got an album for 'ya!" Jokes aside, it's not that bad, but it's boring, and I don't see how this is a must-listen album. If you're among the millions of people in question, you don't need to listen to this album before you die, because you will never die. Listen to Ágætis Byrjun instead. You're welcome!!! :)

Not my thing.

I try to be fair when diving into a band and album I have not heard before. I sat through a whole FKA Twigs album listen once. I just don’t understand the “greatness” of an instrumental only album, such as this one. Is this supposed to be indie jazz? I will say, if you put Thom Yorke vocals over top of the music it could work itself as a Radiohead album. There’s a band called Matmos who have perfected this type of sound and they use every day items to create their “noise” . I especially like it when they use medical equipment. Try them instead. Choice cut: Along the Banks of Rivers

idk brother mostly not great but couple good ones

I forgot to write my review for this and I can't remember anything but not wanting to listen to it again. 1.5.

I had previously listened to this album while diving into post-rock. This album has its moments, but it's mostly forgettable. As part of a deeper dive into post-rock, it is interesting to see its place among other albums within the genre, but as a standalone album during the 1001 albums exercise, it does not hold up particularly well.

Moody background music. It was a unique experience because I imagined the movies scenes that would be rolling with this. With that, there was no progression or real build up or payoff or anything with the album. Not as bad as some of our ones but not that great. High one or low 2.

It’s not a bad album, but it’s nothing great, either. Starting out with a 20 minute track really takes the wind out of your sails. There were some sections of songs that were really enjoyable but the rest is pretty meh.

21 minutters lang instrumental åbner: "Djed". Navnet på sangen er også den følelse jeg sidder tilbage med. Der var sikkert noget godt et sted i den, men det er blevet skakset i smadder, og DJed ud over et tomt danse gulv...

100% genuine dialogue from the studio during this album: “Dan, we’ve only come up with 14 minutes of music! How are we going to fill an entire full length album?” “No need to worry, John. Let’s just repeat what little we have over and over until it’s long enough” “But won’t that make it boring and repetitive?” “Not if we just tweak small elements every now and then” “Couldn’t that still render the album dull and repetitious?” “Perhaps we could make little changes here and there” “Doesn’t that risk our music being tedious and monotonous?” “…”

I suppose it was fairly pleasant to listen to, if not a bit boring. I couldn’t even tell that first song was 20mins long it all sounded so similar. Simpsons: No

Engaging in parts, intricate instrumentation, experimental but lacks consistent replay value; a sound that might resonate more with evolving taste over time.

Seems like quality jams, but I was waiting for it to end most of the time.

Okay background instrumental music 2.5

Muy conceptual

organs at beginning of Along the Banks of Rivers reminds me of something I can't put my finger on. It's okay, like more boring Godspeed you black emperor

Not my thing. Wasn’t annoying, but I definitely won’t be listening again. Production was very good and so was the writing and arrangements. 2/5

Not my thing..

I really hated the first like four minutes of this album, then it gradually became more intriguing. However I’ve never been of fan of music that just really contains different “sounds.” I definitely wavered with this album because at points it was pretty sounding then others it was just honestly aggravating noises. I’m just not a fan of this type of music, but I can see why others may be.

Alternativ rock, ren instrumental, ambient, gode glimt, men for mærkeligt

Yet another completely unneeded inclusion on this list. Innocuous, but purely background music. The best thing about this record is that it's short.

The problem with this and so much post rock is that it’s an entire album that sounds like an intro for a song that never starts

I tried but just couldn’t get there. 2

Conocía el anterior. Éste me ha aburrido un poco.

Did that first song really need to be 20 minutes long? Really?

Sounds like background music from the movie Primer. No vocals, just ambient sounds and instruments.

**An ok instrumental album

Nope, really not feeling this. I guess you have to be in the mood, maybe chilling with the headphones on letting it wash over you. Clearly I wasn’t

Um what was that

Nothing I enjoyed

whatever

This sounds like a band just compiled all the intros, outros, and interstitials they made for an album or two and turned that into its own album. It has some really cool stuff on it, but it is just herky jerky, incomplete sounding

Not my Kind of music

Tortoises are amazing creatures. We may or may not all be on the back of a tortoise, and they are the longest living land animals. I don’t think Tortoise the band is going to be particularly long living though outside of the 1001. There are several parts of “Millions Now Living Will Never Die” that would be decent foundations for some background chill lo-fi type stuff, but as a whole the album is a boring improvisational jazz rehearsal with a rock spin.

Conocía el anterior. Éste me ha aburrido un poco.

This is good background music. If it's all you're focusing on, it's a bore. Highlight was the minor key finale track that suited the slow tempos much better than the other cuts. Listened to: at home. Favorite tracks: Along the Banks of Rivers

Vaguely pleasant sound but then not so much other times. I don't really get the idea of post rock even if I like some of the results. Did rock end? Where's it gone?

FAAAAD

Instrumental. A little navel-gazing, a little bit of a snooze. It's ok. Should it be on the list? No.

Long instrumental

if the first song didn’t exist, i think the album would be netter. some weird 20 minute experimental song to open the album seems quite unnecessary. the rest of the album is pretty good, though. i like “The Taut and Tame” a lot.

Meh. Didn't leave much of an impression. Along the banks of rivers was nice.

well that was a whole lot of nothing

Not an album that I would pick and listen throug

The band is very aptly named because their music is slow, dry, and I want to turn them into soup

Tortoise is the perfect name for this band. Everything is slow and rhythmic.

Not for me

Very experimental. Not really my taste. "Along the Banks of Rivers" is the best song of the album.

"Post-rock" = "Dull" If this is what got the Friends of Dean Martinez together, then cool. That gets them a second star. Otherwise, it's barista music.

I speed-ran the math rock subgenre in my youth, moving from American Football to Hella to Meshuggah in the span of 6 months my Junior year of high school. Along the way, the post-rock Slint-inspired stuff never caught my attention, as it was either too sparse or too quiet for my ears. I craved the extremes, and the post-rock stuff felt like Brooklyn Divorced Dad™️ music to me, music made for a calm show with no pit where you can lean against the doorframe beneath the exit sign, nursing a PBR, not concerned about how much your knees will hurt in the morning. I’m older now and work in an office, and when I occasionally loudly listen to the math rock I used to like, my colleagues will turn to me and ask if I’m doing okay, mentally, and that happens more often than I’d like, so I tend to just avoid that type of music while I work. So I now get the appeal of post-rock - it’s tame but still weird and off-kilter. And Tortoise does a good job with their weird repetitive riffs and jazz-influenced structures. It is listenable, and well-made, and maybe even important to the genre, although, again, because I wasn’t initially sold 15 years ago, I barely know what the post-rock essentials are, so never hearing about this until today is a silly critique. If you want ambient, jazzy post-rock, this album serves it up hot and ready. But I don’t really need this in my life, personally, so I’m not really sold on this either. It is very, very bland. And that has a time and place, but I’d rather have my coworkers assume I’m having a mental health crisis because I’m listening to The Dillinger Escape Plan than assume I’m old as fuck for listening to this.

Couldn't get into this

Cold music you can't touch, that keeps its distance and does not invite in glass everywhere. there was a series of equations to solve at the source a puzzle to which the music is a solution something to look at but not enter was there a who they had in mind? made for spaces empty of community. deserted banks of dry rivers Where is life? I will not come back here.

Silent Post Rock.

I prefer John McEntire in The Sea and Cake.

2.4 Not everyday listening for me by any stretch of the imagination but I did find certain parts were pretty progressive and interesting

Usually, I say that I like rock music. It's a way to define myself, even broadly. Now, I'll start to say that I dislike post-rock. This is much more precise in defining myself.

2nd day in a row where I get a 20 minute long opener song. This is an instrumental album which is the first in a long while. Nonetheless the music just isn't that interesting. It just kinda limps along never really being all that assertive.

In college, I went to a house show at "The Treehouse". The house had an actual living tree growing through the middle of it. That's irrelevant to this rating but objectively very cool. At the end of the night, a dude played a set that largely consisted of the automated voice from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority being played over and over on repeat with some random beeps and boops thrown in. It was hands down the worst sound I have ever listened to and I will never forget it. Now back to this album... About 16 minutes into the first song, a horrible combination or sirens and other stressful beeping started. I actually could not make it through to the end of the song because it was so terrible and it reminded me of that troubled young man who loved the New Jersey Turnpike Authority too much. The rest of the songs were not nearly as offensive but they were basically just a crappy version of Explosions in the Sky.

It's a weirder Explosions in the Sky with far more electronic sounds. The first song, Djed, dragged and was a little too ambient for me. Glass Museum slapped. None of the other songs really drew me in. I was bored most of the time and likely wouldn't play this again. 4/10

Could not really get into

A interesting album. No lyrics throughout the album. Definitely a bit experimental. The first song was awful and does not deserve to be called music. The second was probably my favorite. Most of the rest of the album reminded me of lofi study beats. Lots of… nature sounds used throughout the album. Not bad, but the first song kinda ruined it for me

Lots of meandering.

Click "play". Waiting for something interesting to happen. Around 14 minutes into the first song I thought my speakers were broken. They were not. 30 minutes into the album, did it start yet? Have I missed something? 40 minutes in. Someone is softly playing the guitar. VEEERRRYYY softly. And just like that it's over. It's over? It's over.. It was nice though.

At times this album drags on like a tortoise. But there are moments where this pace of development pays off.

Instrumental. Boring. Pointless.

Decent background music, nothing too distracting.

Not my cup of tea

I knew we were in for a long one when they busted out the keys and started noodling on the first song. And much like this album, I have nothing else to say

Fine to listen to in the background of doing stuff but felt like at times I am just listening to random sounds. Various clicks and sounds fading in and out. It feels like a 90s psychedelic mostly instrumental sounds. Wouldn't be surprised if there is some Pink Floyd influence behind them. I think I enjoyed the last song the best Along the Banks of Rivers. Giving it a hard 2.5. Almost want to give it a 3.

Did not do much for me

What the crap was that?

gonna have to revisit this one maybe, just didn't click with me!

Es akustisches rock Album? Hmmm... Schomol schwierig. Eis vo de erste mal dasi Wikipedia ahglueget han welli denkt ha evt isch da e deeper meaning behind it... Naja irgendwie sött meh "hailed as godfathers of the American 'post-rock' movement" ih demm fall fasch meh als Warnig gseh als öppis anderes. Es tönt ja scho nid terrible aber ich gseh überhaupt nid de appeal vo dem. 2/5

Not my type of music.

This is human music -4/10

Boring, but not the worst thing to listen to when I was getting groceries. But I’m not rocking with a 20 min long song

Pretty funky, it’s very difficult for me to stay engaged when there are no words and I don’t think the instrumentals were all that 4/10

Pretty accessible as far as avant-garde music goes. I don’t really like avant garde music though. Definitely too boring to be the only thing I’m doing, but alright background music. 4.5/10

First song sounds like a 10 year old trying to make a daft punk song in garage band but they don’t know how to start a new song so they just keep piling on to one with all their new ideas 4.5/10

Was on in background. Didn’t really grab me.

Glass museum and ‘banks of rivers not bad

Interesting album but the only song really worth listening to is the intro which takes up half the album.

Godspeed you bland Mogwai! I dunno I guess Tortoise started this gloomy downbeat instrumental thing and I don’t hate it. But it’s not atmospheric enough to enjoy on its own and the lack of dynamics and drama just leave you with a soundscape. Probably good music for driving at night or walking by the sea.

Couldn’t get all the way through it. I like instrumental, but this all just sounded like one big song that wasn’t that great.

Music to build furniture to

Interesting album. Like most of the instrumental albums on this list, it's more of a mood music piece. Pleasant background music, but not something I can appreciate. 2/5.

The first track certainly did not need to be 17 minutes. The rest of this was decently enjoyable.

Music to fall asleep to

A chill album that was nice for ambient music while doing chores. Definitely a time and place album

Well that was exceptionally irritating. There might be some jams hidden in the midden but it's hard to tell underneath the overwhelming trash-heap of noise. The few times something resembling a song rose to the top of the pile, it was repetitive and boring. And let's talk about that first track. 20+ minutes, guys? And halfway through, it just... changes completely? That's a new track, fellas. And then it changes completely again for the last two minutes? That's another track. This isn't hard math. When the song changes and it never goes back to an earlier musical theme, it's a new song. Saying it's not is just pretentious and frustrating. The ONLY reason this album isn't getting a full-on fail is because "Glass Museum", while repetitive and about two minutes too long, is at least interesting. The rest of the album is garbage.

Boring electronic music.

There were moments I hot excited about what was happening but nothing ever happened.

It was just okay.

an album with nothing but instrumentals… gross. seriously though, the first song is over TWENTY fuckin’ minutes! what the h? much of this album sounds like a jam session of a college jazz band. a lot of experimental elements. it feels like the musicians are trying to do something profound, i guess, but it just kind of falls flat.

Not my jam

Very abstract. Similar to Yes in that it's mostly instrumental. Hard to get into

An instrumental that went fast. Didn't sound critical to me, but ok.

C’est le God Speed You! Black Emperor d’ascenseur. J’adore la musique instrumental, mais ça me tombait vraiment sur les nerfs au bout d’un moment

If that's the music accompanying my immortality, then I'm glad I won't live forever.

turtle

I enjoy EITS instrumental but this is a bit soulless. No real chamce to groove or settle in here.

Tortoise taught us little.

Ok but not my fav

This felt unique, and I was certainly fascinated by all the rather uncommon instrumentation. That said, it really didn't do much for me beyond a little bit of curiosity and intrigue. I would have liked to have been wowed more, especially considering this album's place on the project. Interesting, but not THAT interesting.

Side B is a bit listenable, side A however os just 20 min of garbage. Gets an extra star bc that successfully convince you, on multiple occasions, that your stereo is broken

If I wanted to listen to random noise that sounds a bit like a thunderstorm, I'd listen to a thunderstorm.

Not offensive instrumental music. Would put on in the background to do work.

There’s a peaceful serenity to some of this record. It just gets too samesy for my and lacks true energy. I wanted something to get me going not an album to fall asleep to. Nonetheless for those that love instrumental music there’s some truly enlightening music being made here.

Falls between ambient and post-rock, but doesn't really reach either.

It's not terrible, some of the instrumentals are rather peaceful. However, this is just an album I could not get into.

Meh to the power of meh squared.

Not for me

This is just noise. It is not unpleasant noise but I certainly wouldn't call it a masterpiece at any point. It certainly is not noteworthy. It is just there.

I can recognize the influence, but just not all that interesting. There are better examples of post-rock that take the idea to the next level

if you listen closely, at 14:36 of "Djed," you can hear the sound of the band jerking off as they imagine music nerds pretending like this is listenable

Pfff als een schildpad op het land, zo saai en traag beweegt deze muziek.

Instrumentaal en experimenteel. Not my cup of tea.

Muziekaal hoor ik wel mooie dingen, maar het is me allemaal teveel van hetzelfde om echt te blijven boeien.

Movie score music. Not particularly interested in this unfortunately.

Never heard or heard of this. Is this another record that's going to annoy me about the exclusion of both Godspeed and Mogwai from this list? There is one Boards of Canada record. I mean, it's a pleasant enough listen, but not essential or standout, for me.

Interesting soundscapes for sure but hard to find a hook that would ever make you want to listen again

Was hyped for an under 45 minute album. But then the first track is the longest song in history and just goes no where.

Sopi videopelin tehofarmauksen taustalle. En kuuntelisi kyllä ilman jotain ajatuksia muualle vievää aktiviteettia.

Paikoin meni kyllä melko erikoiseks. Kiikunkaakun kakkonen

Weird shit. I don't really get it. I don't doubt that a great deal of thought went into it, but without a deeper understanding of what they were going for it's difficult to have a deeper understanding of the music. Also, how is "Post-Rock" a genre? Rock is still a big deal.

Eh, it was really just okay. I wouldn’t be upset if this were on or anything, but the song writing didn’t do it for me. It was often very repetitive and where it wasn't it didn’t catch me. So, all in all probably wouldn’t play this again.

I put this on and forgot it was playing. The song it ended on reminded me that I was listening to something. Not bad to listen to, but no sticky.

I think in Tortoise I hear the evolution of all pre-packaged cell phone ringtones. Shout out to the surgically-precise percussion. I liked this, a bit. I think it’s worth two stars.

3/10. Could have just been a pleasant album to listen to in the background despite being a bit boring, but nooo, they had to go and add a whole bunch of unpleasant sounds at the end of the first track to make you pay attention and feel uncomfortable. Not for me.

Actually really boring and bad. 3/10

Boring but not completely unlistenable

Not good. I get that it's trying to be different, but this is just not enjoyable. I am not sure what I was supposed to gain from this album.

Listened Before? N This sounds like the royalty free soundtrack to a YouTube video. Inoffensive and unremarkable. No vocals. MEH. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: A Survey

Takes a while to get into (for me). It is something I'd definitely add to a mood music playlist. But not great. 2.5

It's mind boggling how someone, anyone, could ever consider giving this more than 3 stars, let alone 5. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the 20+ minute track and spoiler alert: this wasn't good. All instrumental, which doesn't make it bad, but when it's arranged like it had been here... yeah it's not good. 3/10.

I thought it was ok at first (admittedly skipped the 21 minute first song), but then it started feeling repetitive

The opening track was pretty tedious and, especially towards the end, seemed really disjointed. There were some stronger tracks later on but the album had already worn my patience quite a bit by then
