Reviews (page 4 of 7)
The songs where you can hear actual voices of the singers are better than the synthesized ones. I did really enjoy the melodies and the beat of this album.
Some okay songs, but a lot of them are super annoying. 2.5 rounded up
Decent house music. Not really a genre that gets me excited. Don't Give Up had a cool synth bass line in it, there were little highlights like that throughout.
I found it to be… okay. Not much about it stuck out enough to demonstrate to me why it’s on this list of albums. I can occasionally vibe with a drum and bass type album, especially while exercising, but I gave this a second spin while running and just wasn’t that into it.
This band was pretty big during their time.
This is some HARD uni memories. I guess they did this stuff pretty well.
i really enjoyed the funkadelic vibes, but i dont think id revisit it in the future. it didn't really leave an impact on me
Actually not bad, it's still not very creative music but the style was decent and the songs didn't go on way too long
First listen. Decent.
Not for me
Drum n bass, with some interesting layering and vocal presence. Overall an enjoyable foray into the contemporary development of EDM. I think this album has a very soothing feel to it and is captivating in some cases, while overdone in others. Not something that I would attempt to revisit in the future, but had I experienced this when I was 20 perhaps a different perspective would have formed.
Favorite Track: Bingo Bango
Not bad for what it is. I normally hate this type of music but this was tolerable.
Not as good as i remember! The singles/hits are bangers. The rest sounds like a year 8 music lesson. 2.8
“Bingo Bango” is the clear standout here, with “Red Alert” as runner-up, but as someone who was never much of a club-goer I can’t really parse the finer shades of house music—this just strikes me as the energetic party kind, not the ethereal drug-floating kind.
A great album - I enjoyed listening more than I expected to but what the fuck was that track "same old show" freaky as bro Also, it started quite weak but as the album progresses it gets better so yay!! Definitely prefer the songs with lyrics but this is a good album to play while cleaning your house
super fun!!! i think it would be much more enjoyable outside of a vacuum because atmosphere seems very important for this album, and it seems like my environment is not the intended way to consume this it somehow feels ahead of its time while simultaneously being so PAINFULLY a product of its time it is also pretty inconsistent, the singles are all really great, specifically: Red Alert and Bingo Bango, but tracks of this quality aren't found throughout this ONE. HOUR. ALBUM. except maybe for U Can't Stop Me which was also so fun. 2.5/5 a perfectly mid album
STANDOUTS: Red Alert Bingo Bango OVERALL: 3/5; it got a bonus point for the hot album cover.
I love electronic music. But I prefer music that's challenging, and I'm afraid that an album of electro-tinged dance music misses the target here. I do think, however, that it's a question of how this is played. I reckon (were I to be back in my clubbing days), that I'd love individual tracks in the club situation. But not really as a rather lengthy album.
I'm not really into electronic music but this album is definitely well-made and some of the songs were very catchy. I especially enjoyed Bingo Bango.
Enjoyed it without really noticing it.
I hated it at first but it was good. A little too electronic for me but interesting b
Not my jam but not bad at all
Knowing only Red Alert it was interesting to hear the rest of the album.
Would like it more if it didn't have vocals
A few of the songs were quite good and I Lilly be revisiting them
Underwhelming, but gets an extra point for sampling The Selecter.
Some great dance tracks floating in a confused mess of sounds.
It was okay
good back ground music
Nostalgia
Electronic albums on this list have been an odd bag. The culture seems to exist outside of the "album era" to the point where they don't know how to structure an album. Which is to say: this album was overly long and poorly structured to me even if I didn't dislike any of the songs per se. It's the risk of doing an album project like this.
This was different than most of the electronic music we've listened to. I did not like "Same Old Show", but otherwise, the music kind of faded to the background. It wasn't bad; it just didn't stand out.
this was another weird one to listen to in broad daylight. i had fun tho. total unknown for me.
Hmm not an everyday driver for me personally but I do absolutely believe I've heard some of these at The Gay Bar at some point and they do have catchy vibes. I particularly enjoyed Bingo Bango and had "I hate it but I love it" feelings about Same Old Show. 2.5
It’s something of an uneven debut, but Basement Jaxx still prove they’ve got the juice and a bag of interesting tricks. The interludes keep things moving along smoothly.
6/10 - You can't stop me has like toad from mario in the background. Rendez-Vu and Red alert I absolutely loved but the rest were kind of strange. One of the songs he mentioned jaxxing off in the basement since forever or something and it sounded a bit off to me. I think the two songs that I liked brought it up to a 6 from a 4. Overall ok but I will be listening to the two I liked again.
Honestly didn't mind this one as much as I thought I might. It didn't feel nearly as lifeless and boring as a lot of the similar stuff we've had recently, and some songs were actually quite fun
For as much as I love drum-and-bass and jungle and trance, house music often drives me crazy. Like Basement Jaxx. Or at least the first half of Basement Jaxx. Once it gets through the “Jaxxalude” and into “Red Alert,” which was a big crossover hit, things improved. “Always Be There” was also pretty good, as was “Don’t Give Up,” and the “Merengue” sample makes “Bingo Bango” stand out. Unfortunately, the first four tracks were too annoying for the back half to fully salvage the album. But that back half does show that house can be great when it finds the right vibe.
A nice background scene.
This was cool techno on par with Daft Punk
That was pretty hype. Felt like I was zoned in at an underground Y2K rave. Strobe lights everywhere.
double shrugs
Had some nice parts
Enjoyed this--good background music which was both upbeat and occasionally entertainingly distracting. Not at all spacey, which I liked.
Following each interlude was a complete change in vibe. It was cool Favorite song: Jump n shout
Good for what it is. Had some nice beats and tunes.
Enjoyable dance music that you couldn't pick out of a lineup. I hate being that guy, but it does astound me that *this* makes the list while Discovery doesn't.
I appreciate some late 90s club music. It's reminiscent of Eiffel 65, albeit a bit worse in my opinion. I did recognize "wheres your head at" when looking at their main page, and was surprised that song was from 2001. I'm happy to see this group is still making music, as its eclectic dance style almost seems like it was slightly ahead of its time. We're a bit spoiled with electronic music nowadays, but I'm trying to put myself on the light up dance floor in 1999 fearful of Y2K dancing like it's our last day on earth. Though I still would've preferred to see daft punk. Liked the interludes. The album kinda morphed over its runtime from crunchy to synth-y, I prefer the back end. Top songs: Jaxxalude Red alert Always be there Bingo bango Don't give up
Earlier this year I started exploring 90s House/Electronic so I was already very familiar with the song Red Alert (which is a bop and a half). I was a little disappointed to find that a lot of the rest of the songs on this album were lackluster. This album committed the number one sin of dance music by being a bit boring of a listen at points. You know I probably need to be high off Molly in a warehouse somewhere shaking my ass to truly appreciate what this album has to offer. I’m gonna keep listening to Red Alert along with a few cuts off of here and leave the rest behind. 3 bumps of Ket 👃 Fav Songs: Jump N’ Shout Red Alert Bingo Bango
3.5 Finally, some electronica that's actually meant for dancing. Certainly something that I would prefer listening to in a club than at my desk or in my car, but still a genre I enjoy. Wasn't familiar with the album or artist before this project, and it's fine. More enjoyable in the first half than the second.
I listened to this on the way home from a very stressful day so I know that my mental state affected my enjoyment of such a high energy album. I’ll give it a 3. I really enjoyed “Jump and Shout” then I got bored. It was a little repetitive.
5.5/10
Had my attention early on. Then began to sound the same. I’ll give it an average.
I would definitely say I'm a fan of house/dance music. This album did not disappoint and had several solid tracks on it. I've never heard of it before, but overall it was a pleasurable experience. There were a few tracks that were a little slower and repetitive that kept it from being a "classic" in my eyes, but it's still very solid. Favorite tracks: Rendez-Vu, Red Alert, Always Be There, Bingo Bango, Don't Give Up.
Cool House álbum but I’m failing to see why it is on the list.
There are some good songs on this just upon an initial listen. Definitely some that i would add to a party playlist.
I enjoyed the beats and vibe of this record, but back to autotune. Yuck! Fortunately it’s used in a way that benefits the music here, and is not used just for the sake of using it. This album is not the total shit show other musicians make of their music by over using it.
Great for dance. Techno arrangements but with a slight blend of some classic R&B/Jazz feel eg Earth Wind Fire…albeit a small influence it’s enough for me to enjoy it
So far on this list, electronic albums have been a mixed bag. Either they’re really good (Cross, Homework) or they’re really bad (Snivilization, Haunted Dancehall). This one falls somewhere in the middle. Some of the most bland electronic music I’ve ever heard. Inoffensive but not near interesting enough. 5/10 Top 3: 1: Red Alert 2: Same Old Show 3: Don’t Give Up
Really cool stuff. Not quite my style but I see why it hit such a nerve in the clubs.
Boom tsk
Liked it a lot at first but I don't think listening in the car is the best environment.
About 2 or 3 tracks are interesting: Rendez-vu, Always Be There, Don't Give Up Fav Track: Always Be There
Not for me.
It's dance music. I guess it's good for what it is? 3
few absolute stand outs, rest of the album's a dud 3
I had this on CD but only listened to a song or two at the time. All these years later and I don’t think I was missing much.
I don't really know what to make of this
It was fun, but it sounded like a generic indie ost
Mostly instrumental house album. Some interesting songs, but a couple dumb ones. Should relisten
It was OK - just kind of slid through my head without me noticing much
Worth another listen
C+ Rendez-Vu 3 Yo-yo 3 Jump N' Shout 2 U Can't Stop Me 3 Jaxxalude 3 Red Alert 3 Jazzalude 3 Always Be There 3 Sneakalude 3 Same Old Show 3 Bingo Bango 3 Gemilude 3 Stop 4 Love 3 Don't Give Up 2 Being With U 3 I thought this was going to be a 1 after the first listen. This needed some marination for sure.
3 - I know a few of the songs off of here already, but sadly, none of the deep cuts are as good as those songs. It's got a interesting sound throughout, which is part of why I like the songs I do so much. Maybe I'll like Rooty more, but Basement Jaxx might just be more a singles band for me than an album band.
Kukoistan. Objektia. 3. Moaning yourself off the higher heaven.. the 4 and 5 star ratings.. cannot be justified on the album.. Feels like a throw in.. Experiment that has no ground.. Which is suprising considering the complex structure of songs.. But thats how I found it..
Not my type.
Received by the press at the time as a dance act of Underworld/Orbital/Chemical Brothers class. But listening back now, this was slightly exaggerated. It has a few noteworthy tracks, ('Red Alert', 'Rendez Vu') but too much filler to call it a great album
I don’t regularly go out of my way to give Europe its flowers, but EDM is something they are right about, and I do wish it was more mainstream in the US. I don’t know, maybe its harder when there is a broader spread of people and all the festivals that do happen and have any amount of draw for talent are turbo expensive and crowded with “influencers” of dubious status.
Was expecting something more groovy, but it was a fun listen.
In the mid to late 90s there was a movement of increased maturity among dance music artists. Be it connection to the art world (Underworld), eclectic production (Leftfield), or deeply personal lyrics (Faithless), dance music was demanding to be taken seriously. The Basement Jaxx rebelled against this and just wanted to make feel good music that you didn't need to think about. There's nothing wrong with that in principle but they took it so far as to border on self parody. There are a handful of songs here that are genuinely enjoyable in small doses. The rest of the album tries so hard to avoid the depth of their contemporaries that the songs are instantly forgettable. It serves it's purpose in the music world. If you want to just dance, it's fine. But it's a bit ridiculous that they styled this as a 'remedy' to more interesting artists than themselves.
I was four years old when this album came out, so I don't think this was really on my radar. A good amount of tracks are fine, if you're into this kind of chill-ish club music that (admittedly) sounds a bit dated. I am not necessarily into it, but a few standouts left a good impression. Especially Bingo Bango. Bingo Bango is a fucking BANGER.
Will be much better on the dancefloor but it doesn't do much for me on my sofa. I like the hits but it generally sounds a bit faux. 2.75.
3 just for red alert and the amount of times Ive played that song at parties.
When they are good, they are amazing (cf. Red Alert, Rendez-Vu). However, the rest of it, while definitely sounding different to most dance music, is not amazing. This album is also too long. I'll stick with my 'Basement Jaxx: The Singles' CD. 5/10. Two amazing songs (and the alright 'Bingo Bango') are not enough to justify a higher rating.
Club music: it wasn't good and the stand out track is just a radio song that comes on past 9pm to appeal to all the wine mums too old to go to an actual club (still a banger). Otherwise it was incredibly unremarkable, don't think I could listen to as many random drum and electronic noises which hardly flow into each other. Keep it in the files and don't release it.
I gleefully burned off a Chinese buffet worth of calories while listening to this album. Recommended by 3 out 5 personal trainers. 🏃🏃🏃
This album is peak late 90's/early 2000's EDM. I have fond memories of partying hard with Jaxx blasting, so take that into consideration for this review. This album is mid, at best. It is a solid background noise album (not in a business setting, some of the sonics sound pretty sexual at moments). If you want a steady beat to be productive to, this album will nail that. If you want an album you can sing the hooks to instantly, this album will nail that. If you want an album you'll forget all about an hour after listening, believe it or not - this album will nail that.
Alright EDM. Weird cover though.
helppo genre, jotenkin menee vituiksi tässä. niitä interludeja tartte laittaa neljää kappaletta. on kiinnostavia ideoita janiin mutta loppujenlopuksi brittituotanto..etelänaapuri salmen taa osaa nämä hommat parenmin...huono maku jää huono... harmittaa tälläne prkl PRKL... valtavirran kanssa samaa mieltä, miten voi olla... olenko minä tyhmä? olen.. red alert
Was better than I remembered and expected. Fucking hate the singles though.
Wonderful, another British electronic group. They have a unique sound, but still house music. Fine for playing in the background. The tone changes quite a bit toward the end.
Intense sounds! Love it! Makes me want to push myself!
was good for workin out
Not my thing.
Was really into this album and the follow up when it came out, good to listen back today, wouldn’t be one I’ll revisit frequently much better dance albums out their, but for personal reasons I’m glad it’s within the book 1001 albums before I die, and I got the chance to listen to it again today.
Dance music, mixed influences form jazz to hip hop to more punky feeling
Alright, sorta fancy, sorta interesting, better for exercising to rather than, like, enjoying.
hmm. Decent cool album? I liked Red Alert. The other songs were not quite as memorable. I did like the beat of the songs, but nothing was exceptionally memorable.
Ooooh YUM love Basement Jaxx. This is not my fave album of theirs (Rooty) by any stretch but it's a pretty cool debut! There's a real feel of their sound already which I still think is pretty unique now, I think that's hard to do with a debut album. A work commute is not the time to be listening to this band though, you MUST be dancing with friends...
Overall liked it yeah and I do like Basement Jaxx, in fact, saw them on Saturday with Will, but too much of it strayed into filler stuff which I'm not interested in. Naturally I prefer their hits which feels more like regular songs, but that's just me, not a big DJ guy.
This was fun and reminded me a lot of being at school. Rendez-Vu and Red Alert are bangers, the video for Red Alert is great as well. Also love the sample of On My Radio by The Selectors on Same Old Show. There was a bit of filler though
Much more fun live
Good for what it is but not really my thing. Some catchy tunes though, amongst the repetitive beats
I liked this one better than the other electronica album. They made some great dance music and I can see the value in this. This seemed more melodic and fun to listen to. It was overly long, though.
Fun!
I got nothing on this one. No hate, no praise…it’s fine, the most three record that ever three’d.
A few great bangers on this album to shake your ass and throw shapes on any available space this is pumping out... love them.... but the rest of the album is just fillers of no substance, theure more like samples you would mix between tracks, so sadly it's a 3 from me... which is a shame, as I like what Basement Jaxx pulled together on their banger tracks.
Digging the old school EDM vibe
Yeah, I kinda liked it.
Decent. Kind of dated though. Some tracks did have a groove to it which I dug. This would have been played in the clubs in the late 90/early 00s. But the album is too hit and miss.
fun. intense. coming to Chicago. Am I interested?
This album has its pretty high-highs and its pretty low-lows (looking at you Same Old Show) but is overall a pretty alright project with some really good songs on there. You just kind of have to sift through something nothingness at times to get there.
5/10. Didn't sound bad, but not very memorable.
Fun house…
3a
Disc 1 e hype o förtjänar en fyra.... disc 2 påverkades sannolikt av att ja va hurjja trött men whatever... låtarna blev ba mycket mindre shwag genast tbh
I ought to like this, but I never had it at the time and am still not wowed, although always enjoyed them live
This was a good dance album, not a genre I usually listen to by choice, but I really enjoyed this one on first listen. It had less of an impact the second time I listened, though. Definitely made me want to head straight to the club (a place I haven't been in 4 years...). Best track: Red Alert Worst track: Being With U, Don’t Give Up, Jazzalude
I mean its fine.It has some good moments.Like a 3.5.A four on a good day.But its a bad day so its a 3
An inventive, high-energy romp from a group I’ve enjoyed on the list before. This LP contains its fair share of annoying samples and overall repetitive tracks, but the songs which hit the groove do so in a way that more than makes up for the rough patches here and there.
its electric pop its ok
3/5
I went back and forth on this one. Sometimes there were some pretty cool grooves and other times I was just wondering what it was I was listening to. I imagine if I was into dancing this would be more enjoyable.
It wasn’t the best electronic album I’ve heard but it also wasn’t that bad. Always Be There, Red Alert and Bingo Bangs were pretty good. Stop 4 Love wasn’t bad it was decent. The introduction track was awful. Other than that, most of the tracks were kind of annoying. 2.5/5 Favourite tracks: Always Be There and Red Alert were definitely the better tracks of the album Least favourite tracks: from track 1 to track 4, absolute horrible.
This isn't music I'd ever choose to listen to. The reason that it has scrambled to three stars - and is holding on to that status by a fingernail - is that it takes me back to a very definite time and place. Sneaking into clubs underage, to be greeted by sticky floors, a blue-black half-light that heightened the sense of transgression; and dance music just like this booming away. Hell, 'Bingo Bango' was likely being spun on a few occasions. If the nostalgia this provokes wasn't so deeply etched, I'd be trying hard to justify two stars. Competent dance that probably sounds great in a packed warehouse but cack in your kitchen.
Good fun groovy and danceable - not a masterpiece by any measure - but a good record nonetheless
This started off quite well, I was surprised how much more I enjoyed it than I thought. Then it just lost its way and all merged into one. Quite a bit nostalgia in this, and I forgot how many big songs these had (mainly off other albums…). Decent for what it is but this isn’t really my cuppa tea
Very nostalgic, not a particular dance music fan but it was played on the radio a lot in my youth and I think the samba-y drums and actual use of riffs/hooks made it stand out to me at the time (along with chemical brothers, daft punk etc). The first half of the album stood up to the singles, though some of the songs dragged and I largely prefer the radio edits of the singles. Got a bit more ambient and started to grate towards the end. A 3.5ish I'd say but 3 seems most appropriate.
better than i expected but not really my bag
I always thought of these guys as Daft Punk knockoffs, and this listen didn't change my opinion there. I mean, it's a relatively catchy listen, but it differs from their betters by lacking subtlety and depth.
It's great for dancing. Songs are a little long for listening. Some are great, some not so much. They should have left off the last couple of songs. Over-all it's a feel good record. It's funkier than a lot of their contemporaries. Kind of a mixture of big beat and house music. More on the house music side, but not as synth based. More sampled. Favorite song: U can't stop me.
Cool industrial techno. Some nice beats in here. Red Alert is a favourite. Some stuff are a bit too alternative for me though.
I had to set aside my preconceptions about dance music to give it a go, and it was well worth the chance. It has the same kind of experimental sampling I'm drawn towards in concrete music and lowercase, just high energy. Favourite track was Don't Give Up because of the intensity. Rated 3/5 overall because I enjoyed the album, but probably won't actively seek it out again.
Album wasn't bad, just not anything that stood out from other 90s electronic music
Not my jam, but not bad
As someone who is generally hasn't gravitated to house & trance genres, I semi enjoyed this. It's worth a listen or few. I'd give it a 3.5
Wow, I felt like I was back in Juarez at The Alive
Time capsule. Cool but not really my thing.
Some of these songs are very weird and some of them are very fun. This could be a very cool electronic album if it was a bit more consistent.
After almost 25 years, still a nice album: very accessible ..but also very throw-away-able and replaceable by many other solid dance albums, so despite its success when it was released I am not sure if it belongs to the list.
I liked a lot of individual songs, but as an album it didn’t seem to flow as all the songs had very different vibes
Not really my thing but it’s good
Solid late 90s UK house. Not really a genre I listen to often but would throw it on again late night.
Pretty ok album but nothing too crazy 2.5 / 5
Okkkk, this à very particular electronic album.... Loved the begning tracks and was really feeling it... Good ideas and tryouts that turned really great imo. It continued with less success.. The touch was usually not there and some songs even boring or meh to listen.... Definitely worth a listen to get some songs in Playlist but as a whole it is not perfect a all. Small 3/5 for the headbands that started the album!!
Basement Jaxx you say? Interesting! Oh, no Where's Your Head At on this album? It's just not the same. I enjoyed some stuff (Rendez-Vu, U Can't Stop Me, Red Alert). Other stuff was ok at times but got annoying (Yo Yo, Always Be There). After Sneakalude I found it a bit monotonous and boring. I didn't hate it, so I guess a 3? A weak one.
Not my vibe, kinda trappy
This is ok. Definitely a little strange, but better than I would have thought, considering the genre.
Damn, two electronic/dance albums from 1999 in a row, very unusual for this list. These guys (or this guy? no idea) seem more experimental than Darkdancer, some stuff is more sparse and some wider genre territory is invaded. Not as many immediate hits to me as the previous but some heat for sure. The lyrics on "Yo Yo" had me speechless, what apparently is "You were a prophet from above, then you came and sucked my blood" I heard as "then you came inside my butt." Wacky either way. I like this one. Favorite tracks: Yo Yo, Red Alert, Bingo Bango, Don't Give Up. Album art: I've definitely seen this one before, a bunch of bodies laying on each other. Pretty saucy stuff, but definitely makes for a cool image. 3.5/5
its like British house I guess kinda okay with small lows and highs
Only know the obvious tracks on this.
The album has one truly great song in Red Alert. The rest is mediocre. The album cover always reminds me of a jar of hotdog sausages.
somebody likes
Was OK, not my favorite I was only familiar with the last song on the album.
I only listened to half. It was decent.
I always enjoy it when this project serves up a solid offering from genres and styles from lanes outside my usual music path. This has some sweet grooves and interesting harmonies. Kept me engaged. Nicely done.
Yet again, not a great listening record, should be experienced in the right setting (club/house party). That said, a few tracks were good to just listen to and work with in the background: ex. Always be There, Jazzalude.
It's fine electronic/dance music. It gets repetitive, but I think that just goes with the genre. Didn't hate it.
Have to give this album a lot of credit for trying to shake up the genre and rid it of its “close-minded” tropes. In this regard, the album is at least partially successful, although it does contain a lot of nondescript dance tracks. My personal highlight was “Always Be There”, and I’ll definitely be going back for a third or fourth listen.
Dance beats. There's a time and a place for this album, late night clubbing.
It's got catchy beats for electronic music, but I guess that's the point. Would I listen to it again, probably not often. Was it thrilling to listen to this one time? Not really. But I think it was well done.
Who doesn't like a repetitive beat? Pills baby!
Tavallaan tosi lörs, mutta sit taas jotenkin toimii. Melodiat on kivoja, ehkä joku tyylikkyys ja hienovaraisuus uupuu. Vaikea arvioida, ehkä sit 3/5.
Ihan kiinnostavaa teknoa (?) ei silti ihan yllä neloseen.
A bit repetitive, but man this reminds me of going to the dance clubs in college. You can make a pretty good 12 song playlist of Basement Jaxx songs
Pretty dated music, not exactly crazy about it. Typical late 90s electronica. 6/10.
If I wanted to hear a group namecheck themselves on a record, I'd listen to DJ Kahlid. This album started off on the wrong foot and got worse from there. Okay, after a thorough listen, this album warmed up on me. 1999 seems a little late in the 90s techno for an album that sounds like this to emerge. But it's better than I expected. Is it a must-listen? Maybe. Is it iconic? No, but I'll say this is the first album after some 230 assignments that forced me to reverse my decision. 3.5/5.
I don't normally listen to stuff like this, so I don't really know what makes this special. I did enjoy some moments on here, though. In a different mood or environment this may be better to listen to.
It's perfectly decent house music with its driving four on the floor beat. I'm much more apt to like French house, but this album is fine. I'm sure it's great for dancing but I didn't find anything here that really stood out to me. Some of its sounds are dated which is to be expected.
oh wow! this was completely new to me, and dang it was pretty good. definitely an album to dance to. some of these sounds were just so good! i could, however, see how some of these could get rather repetitive. still a cool listen.
I do like some of the tracks, although it can be a bit hit and miss. I used to listen to the 'best of' album from the band, I think perhaps that suits them more. Seems like more of a singles band than a full album band
Great English house album. Twisty, funky, energetic. This was pretty fun. Fave Soungs: Red Alert, Rendez-Vu, Jump n' Shout, Rendez-Vu
J'aime bien.
Average electronica album
Electrónica. No está mal. A veces repetitivo pero alguna melodía interesante.
It was pretty good for dance music.
This is alright!! I suppose 😀
With my only real experience with house music (and EDM in general) being Daft Punk, this album had an uphill battle in order for me to like it. It's no match for Discovery (what is?), but this is a very solid collection of beats that stays interesting throughout and keeps the head bobbing and the body moving. The repetition does start to wear thin towards the end, but that doesn't drag the album down a whole lot. Favorite Tracks: "Rendez-Vu", "Yo Yo", "Jump 'n Shout", "Red Alert", "Being With U"
Started poorly, had a few good bit in between but the ending was not great. Averaged itself out.
Genre: Funky House 3/5 Basement Jaxx’s first album is everything you’d expect from one of their albums. A few absolute bangers (Red Alert, Bingo Bango) and some big-time misses (Yo Yo, Same Old Show), Remedy represents the techno movement going on at the time, and its failings and triumphs. The Chicago and French influences on this album are not lost, especially on songs like Rendez-Vu and Always Be There, and guide Basement Jaxx to the right place most of the time. However, too many interludes, and a little too much filler, make this one good, but unimpressive.
Well, it's some electronic dance music. I guess that for what it is, it's pretty good. I liked the various musical influences and found some of the tracks enjoyable for background music. That's miles and miles ahead of how much I like most other dance music, so I'm giving this 3 stars.
Decent. A few really innovative bangers that are really fun, but much of the rest of the album falls a little flat. Nothing really stands out too much for a lot of the songs, but they also aren’t bad by any means. 5/10
I guess this had some elements of interest that rise above the median of its genre, but like most the dance/electronica it just didn't grab me that strongly and quickly turned into background noise.
groovy and funky pop goodness.
A decent track or two but all in all not for me
Playing in the background
I didn't finish this but I liked what I heard! Just got distracted.
I’m
No Some great dance stuff, gets a bit doodle-y in posts
I'm going to say 3 on this. I wanted it to be higher and it's great background working music, but not quite to a 4.
Oh, I love this. 3.5 out of five First three songs are incredible
Need to be in the mood. Like going roller skating.
I don't usually listen to EDM. However, I was very entertained by the album. Favorite Tracks: Red Alert
Pretty cool. One song I recognized: 'Red Alert'. Generally, I'm not really into dance hall music.
good groove, good bass, but couldn't listen to the whole thing straight through
Not my style
Better than I thought.
U can't stop me: Mazza figo, non me lo aspettavo sto pezzo.
it is house - idk. maybe useful listening for no quarter lol
I loved this album back in the day. In 2021 it definitely seems of its time and is maybe a little too "amped" for this middle-aged man :D I confess that I had a little nostalgic fun reconnecting with it after ~20 years.
I used to love this album, mostly because of Red Alert, but I don't think it aged well.
I enjoyed this album much more than I thought I would. One thing that makes it hard to rate an album like this is that the music seems not to be made for casual listening. This is music for dancing. Because of that, I feel like a lot of my gripes might fall a little flat. The songs can run too long, the music can slide into repetitiveness, the beats can sometimes feel a bit too simplistic. However, in some ways that might be a strength of the music as the artists conceived of it. Regardless, I liked the album, although the songs are a bit too long for my liking. Further, the more I listened to it, the harder it became to pay attention to each song. It's almost as if the album just runs together. Still, a fun listening experience. 6.5/10.
It's ok. Doesn't have the character of rooty which I much prefer
Has not held up as well as I would have expected. Was pioneering but now seems somewhat dated. Is it a required album to own? Meh.
house music
I forgot about Basement Jaxx. Rooty reminds me of a very specific time and place - working at Urban Outfitters in Austin, TX, and living in the same place as Josh. But I don't think I've listened to anything before or after. Not generally my thing, but they have some good stuff.
Deux album electro en deux jours. Meme note 3.5 bon en travaillant, hier c’etait lets get killed de david holmes
Really solid electro goodness. Freaking weird in the best way.
Pretty cool
Not for me
Electronica!
Fav Song: Rendez-Vu
Meh. Not my cup of tea.
Hauska levy
Decent
This is far from minimal house. The big-beat-adjacency is well-noted. Songs build up out of crunchy layers, and in an impressive amount of variety over the runtime. However, nothing's quite transcendently beautiful. This is music that makes you want to move and feel and drink to ignore some of the repetition. Less exhausting than many full-length dance projects, granted, but also less of a statement.
maybe this would hit in the club
There's genuinely two good-ish tracks on here. The rest is shit played in late bars in the city, back when we used to drink Jagerbombs and pretend our heels weren't killing our feet. It’s that generic that even our parents said "ooh this is a good dancey song!"
I think I'm not that into electronic music or something. This wasn't experimental enough to be interesting or mainstream enough to be really catchy, thus leaving it in electric limbo.
Solid 2 for me, i enjoyed the big singles and the ambient last quarter but actively disliked the rest: generally the type of EDM that makes me check out the other room at the club
Maybe I am becoming desensitized because it feels like there is essentially nothing I like about this but I still don't hate it? There is enough variety that it keeps you engaged. It's like being caught in a doom scroll of social media content you don't like. Nothing is appealing but somehow it taps into your ancestral senses and feeds a slow dopamine drip into your head.
I am not a fan of electronica or dance music at all. I normally find it incredibly boring and formulaic at best and outright annoying at worst. That said, this album doesn't fall into the same boring and repetitive 4-on-the-floor bass/snare pattern on every single track. There are interesting rhythms and embellishments throughout that made the tracks feel like they were evolving and prevented the album from ever feeling too repetitive. Which is to say, this album was at least tolerable, but I'm still not really a fan and it went on a little too long. I was pretty much checked out at the halfway point and I didn't really need a track of moaning for 6 minutes, but I did finish it!
What the British gen x music critics who curated this list see in 90s UK house, I'm sure I don't know.
This wasn’t good. Can’t see the justification for this being on the list.
All the songs sounded the same
I really liked the beat and groove of the first four tracks. Then it slowly fell apart, with Same Old Show being the worst offender.
This is basically music I pretended to like in clubs at uni. Outside of a shitty club somewhere I can't think of a single scenario I would want to listen to this again. It's not absolutely dreadful by any means, but to me it blurs into a non stop mix of boring club electronica beats, with minimal highlights to remember the album by. Red Alert and Bingo Bango are the only songswith anything genuinely interesting to them.
The most basic electronic/techno music you'll hear. Like if a low budget basic cable TV show needed generic "club music," this is what they would play. I didn't mind the track "Jump N' Shout."
I really hate the song with the moaning. Overall pretty mediocre and I even like electronic music. 2/5
Danceable which I like but still not my jam
WHEEEEERES YOURRR HEADDDD ATTTT (wrong album) Meh (this album) The synth distortion on the 2nd last track Don't Give Up was neat
I just don’t like this. It’s not bad, it’s just…not good. Same thing over and over, doesn’t go anywhere.
It's electronic noise to me; it must be music to some others, else why is it here?. I'll not be back for a second listen, though I did appreciate Red Alert. It gets a 2 for me.
Did I need the female moans in Same Old Show while eating breakfast? I sure didn't. Also the rest of this album was kind of boring.
2 1/2 stars. There a couple of good songs.
Some of these albums are questionable selections. They're not bad, but they're too mediocre for this list. This is one of those.
in a club, sure. as an album, nah. It is pretty ahead of it's time because it sound like todays tech house. but allot of formulas that worked before still works on the dance floor today. Bingo Bango would absolutely work in a tech house set. as a listening experience it is hard to judge it. it's not bad but it is not something that sticks, I'd rather watch a DJ set instead of an album when it comes to electronic dance music.
Ugh…………. It’s fine. It’s whatever. The 90s electronic music is a bit of a drag.
Not for me. Some good bits.
House music that's got a good beat, nothing remarkable for me.
We have daft punk at home
It’s taking me so long to listen to this album I’m done next
Brahh. Not my thing. Maybe if I was hammered at a club.
I was enjoying this, then it got repetitive. I was finding myself moving to the groovin but after a while I gave up, I think I stopped paying attention during that song that had the weird ass moans.
A bit obnoxious this one for some reason, it's not complete garbage though, some nice moments, and I like French house influence. However, can't seem to be able to give this one more than 2 stars.
Eh not for me, kinda bad edm
2.7 doesn’t quite hit
I just wasn’t in the mood for it. 2
L: 1 M: 5 F:4 O: 3
An okay album, I liked Red Alert the most..
This didn’t cure anything for me.
Fine, but I find myself getting a bit bored one or two minutes before each song finished and pretty tired by the time the whole album was done. A couple of tracks were OK, but overall I was surprised by how boring this was
2 EDM albums in a row? god have mercy... though, perhaps it's because the previous one was so awful, this one was at least tolerable.
Nice enough with some nice moments. RIP Slarta John, love Jump ‘N Shout
Don’t really consider electronic music as something I would sit and listen to for an entire album but interesting as a collection of beats, rhythms and sounds.
It's House music. It has its place on the dancefloor, but I don't like much House except Daft Punk and Praga Khan. Though this album does have more going on in the production than most tracks on Daft Punk's Homework released the same year, the latter caught my attention with Da Funk and Around the World, both catchy tunes with equally mesmerizing music videos. Some of this reminds me of DJ Shadow. I like the salsa horns and upbeat tone of Bingo Bongo, and Being With U could be mistaken for an Outkast song.
I bet that if I listened to this high on ecstasy in a club surrounded by other people dancing it’d be a pretty great album. Unfortunately I’m listening to it cold dead sober in my living room surrounded only by my sleeping dogs
Yeah, no.
Hyperactive house and UK garage-infused dance music built on chopped samples, elastic basslines, busy percussion, and exuberant, varied vocals explodes with restless energy. Listening feels like jumping between crowded rooms at a chaotic party where every track competes for attention at once, resulting in constant overwhelming and unfocused motion.
Not the fucking robot vocals. It’s as annoying as a chipmunk voice. This sucks
Overall I don't think music like this is meant to be listened to outside of it's intended context. There are obviously exceptions, however, this is not an exception to me. Repetitive beats and forgettable lyrics are good for vibes in a dance setting, but not satisfying to listen to unless the beats are incredibly catchy, which these were not to me. I only found myself nodding my head once during Bingo Bango.
Red Alert!
Very 90s dance club background music.
A couple decent songs, but most of them sound like some teenager playing with a sequencer.
Well… this was certainly something.
1.9
I was going to give this 3 stars then I hears that awful singing. Ugh. 2/5
This is a product of when there was a brief alignment between pop music and electronic dance music in the UK during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It's mainly trash, with a few pop hits, a load of generic filler, not a masterpiece by any standards. Personally, I wouldn't dignify this with any electronic genre tag, it's more pop music than techno/ house? Calling this house is like calling Scooter techno. I've seen the term "Carnival House" used to describe music like this, that draws from many sources. It doesn't annoy me quite enough to give it one star, but there's no way it's getting more than two.
Unz, unz, unz, unz. Repeat for 57 minutes.
I mean it was alright but pretty boring really
I’m way too sober for this, king. I can see the appeal to this kind of music in the right scene, but damn just bumping this hating my life fielding calls at work ain’t it. Similarly to some other electronic we’ve had previously, I did enjoy the fact that there’s so many flavors of music here. One minute it’s mixing up some west coast rap, then suddenly we’re in South America. If this were any other genre I’d probably hate it jumping around sonically like this, but for this record it makes sense.
Basement Jaxx’s Remedy is yet another reminder that the 1001 Albums list isn’t always as essential as it claims to be. I could have skipped this entirely and felt no cultural loss. Electronic music deserves its spot, sure—but albums like this make it seem like the genre is padding the list more than elevating it.
Ehhhhhh maybe would prefer their second album
2/5
Not my kind of music, but not terrible. 2/5 for me
Ah, Basement Jazz. Red Alert was a banger and we all waited patiently for another, but instead we got "Bingo, Bingo, be-be-bing-bing, Bango..." Well, wasn't that the story of all those late 90s dance/pop bands? You can dance to it, if you don't mind looking like a drunk uncle at a wedding.
Really meh besides some songs.
This does some interesting things and anticipates dubstep and hyperpop but the whole is less than the sum of its parts.
sorry but this is extremely annoying
This is just not my type of music. It was an Ok listen, but I was just ready for it to be over.
Fuck ass album cover. Overall, I am just not a fan of most electro, and especially not for an hour straight. Yo Yo was goofy and ridiculous as fuck and I feel like if they leaned into that the rest of the way I might have liked this more.
I think I could have died without listening to this.
No wonder the rest of the world hates us when we keep giving them shit like this to listen to!
