Alright electronic. More fun than some of the ambient stuff this list has on it. Personally I like bass heavy stuff more and I don't get that until 'Don't give up', and it was the only one that fit my tastes. Album wasn't standout enough to get me to seek out more from the group (which I've heard of, always seen albums for, never checked out prior.)
A British house album that had me partying at certain points during it, “Same Old Show” for example. But the rest was a bit unremarkable. I find it easy to lose track of the fact that I’m listening to this type of music and perhaps that’s the point.

This album feels MUCH longer than it was. I keep checking it like I check the microwave and I'm on track 3. Determined to listen to the whole thing, I go back to work and keep it playing. Check again - track 4. Wait a bit, check again - still track 4. Is this some kind of joke? Is there a digital lock groove of some kind? I decide to go take a shit and come back. I could still hear it faintly in the background, so I don't consider this abandoning my daily assignment. I'm a slow pooper. I really like to take my time and enjoy the opportunity. Also, for my birthday last year my wife bought me one of those robot toilets that has a heated seat, sprays water in your butt and then blows on it. LIFE CHANGING. If this review was for the robot toilet and not this album, it would get 5 stars, no question. Anyway, I do my business, go back to my computer. TRACK 6??!?! Are you kidding? This lady in the song is telling me not to panic and that "the music keeps on playing all day long" and I wonder if I mixed that edible in with my morning vitamins by accident. Is there mold in my bathroom? A carbon monoxide leak in my house? Because I have lost all sense of time, and this album absolutely will NOT end so I must be hallucinating or slowly being poisoned. If Dante heard this album when he was writing the Divine Comedy he would have invented another layer of hell where this album just plays through once, but it seems like it is for eternity. Maybe as a punishment for people who leave 1 star ratings for Otis Redding or Buzzcocks records? *UPDATE* It's been what seems like years. I need a shave desperately and my clothing is beginning to stink. I've soiled myself and my stomach is screaming with hunger. My wife left me days ago without a note, just a shouted "Fuck you, fuck your robot toilet and fuck this album!" as she stormed out the door, seemingly never to return. My cat has stopped meowing at me and is now looking at me with appetite in his eyes, slowing licking his lips. I fear I am not long for this world, but still I persist. I look at the screen. I am on track 8, "Always Be There", which is appropriate, because it does feel like this album will always be there. I, unfortunately, will not be, and I feel the weakness take over as I desperately try to finish this review and warn others not to start this alb.........................
It was OK
It's very of its time. Where's your head at is a great track. But it isn't on this. So if you feel like getting an idea of the sound of late 90s/early 2000s hedonism... This is probably it.

Runs out of steam a little bit towards the end, but for the most part ‘Remedy’ is an exhilarating, adventurous journey through dance music, with just the right amount of cheese and doof. There’s something on here for just about everyone, and I think it’s an album that has stood the test of time remarkably well, and still sounds fresh in ’25.
The singles are interesting, the rest not so much. Chill listen, probably won't return. Made for a slightly upmarket Ibiza dancefloor.
Thoughts before listening: I'm pretty sure this is some sort of 90s/00s techno, rave group. I wasn't into this type of music at the time, and I probably won't be into it now either. Review: Yeah this isn't for me. This sounds like all the other dance music from the late 90s. It's extremely repetitive and while I understand the appeal for some people, it just doesn't do anything for me. 2-stars
I'm running out of ways to creatively express the strength of my disdain for this kind of mind numbing, irritating, insipid electronic slop, but that doesn't mean I'll stop trying!
-this is um. idk not much stood out to me. felt sort of like dollar store Daft Punk with an added dose of cringe? -like most albums on here it had its fair share of highlights. started off pretty strong, but quickly fell flat and became bland at best. I am not a huge house music person so I could be biased but I will be in no rush to hear this again yea -Favorites are Rendez-Vu and Bingo Bango

I really liked the hyperpop ahh songs, then the album chills out a bit and becomes both dated and boring. Bass in Don't Give Up was good too Three out of five 4 the first third

There's plenty to like in here. Many of the tracks have real energy to them, a sense of fun, and great beats. There's a few dips, but overall it's pretty solid, and there's also a good amount of variation too I think. The singles are still the stand-outs, and the most upbeat, fun ones of the lot. However there were a number of tracks I'd never heard before that were real jams (like Yo Yo). I remember dancing around like a loon as a kid to Red Alert, blasting it on my TAPE cassette walkman with crappy cloth headphones. One time we had a power-cut for about an hour, and I listened to it on loop about 10 times in a row. Meeemories. Rendez-Vu is where it's at though, what a tune! 3.5 rounded up.

When I first put this on I thought "who would sit around listening to this when not in a club in 1999" but by the time we got to song 10 I was really into it.
My toe tapped a couple times so you get a couple stars. But it was not a great album.
Audiogalaxy throwback reminds me of 2000-2004. Gym music. Get pumped.

This is a 1/5. This music sucks. It's not the worst I've heard as in I think the artists were trying to make something cohesive and listenable, but it's still shit. Just not as bas as some of the other shit I've heard from this list.

It's always a good sign when a record can get absolutely played to death on the radio and still sounds good. That's true of Rendezvous, that's true of Red Alert, that's true of Jumpnshout, that's true of Where's Your Head At off a later album. Maybe it's because of all the Latin rhythms. It actually feels really weird hearing Red Alert on decent speakers, instead of on our shitty student kitchen radio, eating my cereal, or booming in the background in a club. I've only listened to Kish Kash by these but that is a great album. They were always more interesting end of the dance omniculture of 1998-2005 ish. It's not all great, U Can't Stop Me is pretty dull, but the vast majority is very listenable and stands up remarkably well 25 years later. Can't say that of a lot of the dance music of the era. Bingo Bango is decent but I think was easily the most overplayed. Non-singles that stand out, Always Be There
2/5. This one might take some time to really get into just like Homework. At the moment, it's fun and simple, and I'm sure there's more than just what I'm hearing going on, but I am not feeling the bounce or the passion in the house music. I don't think I'm finding myself dancing to this often, but there is an organic feel to it. Despite the electronics, it feels like people are playing these instruments, instead of a repetitive beat which clearly sounds robotic. The main issue is that the music is not all good to begin with, so the organic addition does not improve it much. It's not terrible but not great. Man I’m just not really into house music. I like a few tracks but overall it’s kind of boring. This album was not an exception. Every song was too long and I get it, they’re long on purpose for like raves or whatever. I love electronic music just not this.
Remedy is a really good album. It could just be my affinity for most electronica albums speaking here but the album was filled to the brim with a lot of bangers. Bangers that all managed to sound very different from each other and keep me interested throughout the album's whole runtime. Its absolutely not perfect with songs that could be better if they weren't so noisy but even these noisy songs along with all the other ones never were bad, just songs that i would put lower than the best songs. I just don't know what else to say other than this is just a really fun album that will likely be staying in my head for a while. Best Song: Jump N Shout Worst Song: Don't Give Up

They brought the mission back to dance/house. Basement Jaxx dropped the weight of unnecessary sounds and focused on getting people together and moving. Production is banging, interludes are fun, album really showcases what house was about to become

Bit weird to include this rather than "Rooty", but that's the way this list works, I s'pose. This is a bit more dance oriented than I'd usually go for, but still an engaging enough listen. Fave tracks - "Jump 'n' Shout" - MC Slarta John's vocals on that are badass! I quite like the weirdness of "Same Old Show" but it might outlive its welcome with repeated listens."Stop 4 Love" and "Don't Give Up" were also less dancey, more chin strokey, which is more my speed...

Dancey, groovy, fun.
Definitely into the first half of this album. Loving Jump 'n Shout and Red Alert the most, but mostly just jamming along. I enjoy the hip-hop angle to this giving it the feel of something you'd hear in the club in the late 90s. Starting with Always Be There, the rest of the album becomes less enjoyable and runs on way too long. Gets too bogged down with the electronica stuff, which is not my jam anyway. If the first half was at a 4-status then the second half was a 2, which drags this down right to a 3.

I can totally understand people's gripes with this, but even the somewhat generic, lowkey dance beats had me nodding my head and tapping my feet more than Elvis Costello ever did.

Meh not my thing. The music itself was sometimes ok but the awful vocals ruined most of the songs.
Thought this was gonna be Metal. Had some easy listening dance music that you were in some clothing store in the mall. But, as we all know, those songs you hear while shopping are ones everyone sings to or ones that don’t pull you away from conversation or thought.
Sure I guess this is kind of cool and well done. I don't think it's a poor execution and having some things of this style on the list makes sense but I don't know if this is the best pick; I'm probably not the best judge for that one though. Didn't hate listening to it but doubt I'd come back.
This is smartly made music. One of the best acts doing dance/house at the time. I wouldn't mind this playing loud whule trying to have a short conversation over it and mostly smiling, nodding and not really understanding each other. Not necessarily the thing I would reach for but I respect what's going on here and may even try and come back sometime. I think this holds up.
It's EDM- industrial, sexy, intense. I'm sure it's great in the clubs, otherwise it's alright.

This album is definitely of a time, that does not mean it still gets your heart rate up even on a sleepy holiday evening. However I came to realize that the happiness at hearing some of the better known tracks and remembering the general time of when it was relevant makes me realize it is nostalgic but not timeless.

Love this album. I was 17 when it landed and it was full of life and energy. Saw them live and danced until i couldnt stand. Coming back it now, its all still there. A bit more filler than i remember but still a banger

Empiezo a entender más la movida inglesa de la electrónica en los 90: ahí entra una diversidad de proyectos como The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy, Aphex Twin y un largo etcétera, incluida esta banda. Del disco me parece haber escuchado antes Red Alert. Destaco a las otras bandas que nombré antes que a esta. Hasta mañana.

When it comes to finding "great" music, I am of the belief that one of two things happens. In scenario A, the album is objectively great and will be great no matter when you encounter it. These are relatively rare and make up the space of canonical classics for each genre. In scenario B, an album crosses your path that is perfect for you at a particular time. These albums are serendipitous gems that resonate with some primed internal condition. I think what separates the two is how the albums hold up across time and repeated listens. And thus, are indistinguishable at first discovery. This album falls into one of the above two categories for me. While it runs a bit long it never feels a chore and is honest fun the whole way through. Production and mixing are top notch throughout. And the variety of sounds keep things nimble and in constant motion. Jump N' Shout is fucking dope. Love the reggatone style vocals mixed with a hopping, endlessly escalating synth line. Just fun as hell and reminds me a bit stylistically of earlier Deadmau5 mixed with Madlib or something. U Can't Stop Me is another fun one. Absolutely loving the R&B vocals and thickness of the bass. Same Old Show is fantastic -- I love the falsetto vocals shining through the rest of the mix. They give it a delightfully off center vibe. Don't Give Up had me fully hooked in. All said, this is a soft 5 for me. I'm not sure if this would always resonate as it did today, but I'm glad I tapped into it when I did.
Early electronic stuff definitely paved the way for what we have today, but it is not so glamorous listening back on it. Definitely had me bopping as house music has a tendency to do, but I don't think I enjoyed it as a whole. The songs lacked cohesion that I would expect out of an album. The lyrics are very much from 1999. There's some cool sound design, but it never really got put together. A 2.5 is in order for this one. Probably giving it more credit for being early electronic, but I am rounding down based purely on enjoyment.

I can’t believe this came out in 1999. The distorted vocals on “Rendez-Vu” and “Yo Yo” would be right at home on a hyperpop song today. Way ahead of its time. Mostly house with a little techno. The music is stuffed with manic sampling and beat shifts. It’s got a wild personality but still feels like something that would play on an actual dance floor. Honestly, I would love to hear more crazy stuff like this on dance floors. It’s so inventive and fresh but still has a killer beat. Great album cover too. Highlights: “Rendez-Vu,” “Red Alert”
Pretty enjoyable techno / house that does some interesting things. "Yo Yo" in particular sounds a very little bit like "100 Gecs" in the chorus, which is impressive as this came out around 25 years prior. I find 100 Gecs to be a really inspiring and revolutionary current act so I really can't say enough how much this impresses me that it came out so many years before it. I've heard of this act when I was growing up but never really listened much. It's a cool sound, almost even described as addictive? I found myself wanting more when a track was done. Could be that a lot of these songs average out to be around 4 and a half minutes and in this style of music I really like to sit and gel with it for longer. I'm currently having fun in making some electronic music and I'm glad this album is on the list here as I'm very aware of how hard this style is to make now that I'm attempting it (out of my comfort zone) so for transparency that context is probably elevating my rating at the moment. Fun music!

I love this album. I'm not sure it is revolutionary, but it is very fun and consistently good through the entire thing. I have fun listening to it every time that I do. Overall, I feel that 4 star average is probably fair based on it being good but not anything I'd put as a pinnacle of music.
Kinda annoying. It made me cringe a bit. There is old electronic music that aged well. This ain't it. And even for that period it's not good.

At the time, I did sort of like Basement Jaxx but there's a certain quirkiness that sets them apart from similar contemporaries who I prefer, not positively. Some catchy tunes but a little too much eccentricity on others

This was pretty good for electronic music.
Remedy is the debut studio album by English electronic music duo Basement Jaxx, originally released in 1999. I read some other user reviews on this album that referenced an interview by Basement Jaxx. They mentioned how much they disliked the house music scene at the time, noting how the genre felt too "robotic". They wanted to revolutionize the genre with this album. In a way, I can see what they were going for. The first few tracks have distinctive use of acoustic instruments such as acoustic guitar and tabla. However, this idea was short-lived in this record. It's just wildly inconsistent. The first half of the album is very upbeat whereas the second half begins to trail off to a more ambient-influenced sound. I also understand the use of sampling in the context of house music but the samples on here felt pretty repetitive at times.
You can see why these guys were big for a while, super accessible dance/world music when that wasnt all that common, but when everyone got online everyone also moved on. Fine enough though, a 2.5 if ever there was one.
I was so underwhelmed by this! I thought it'd be great fun but it's actually fairly boring throughout. The three tracks I knew were easily the best and the rest just sounded like filler basically.
I’ve never heard of Basement Jaxx or this album before, but I tend to rate electronica albums higher than other users, so I have pretty decent expectations for this album. Remedy should be a pretty good way to start my weekend! Overall, this album was fine. I wasn’t particularly wowed by the first several songs on the album, but it grew on me as I listened to more of it. The first two songs had a darker, bass heavy sound that I liked, but the vocals on both of them were a bit off-putting to me. I started to enjoy the album more at “Red Alert,” which was one of my favorite songs on the album. The main melody reminded me of Daft Punk, but what the band did with that melody was really unique, especially with the use of the squealing sound and the telephone ringing sound, which really gave it a nineties feel. The vocals were some of the best on the album as well. “Always Be There” was really good too, and I really liked the vocals because they reminded me of The XX. “Stop 4 Love” was really good too, and I enjoyed the ambient main melody. The album finished pretty strong as well, with “Don’t Give Up” and “Being With U.” I felt that the band did a really good job with those last three songs, which felt slower and less chaotic than the other songs on the album. I read that Basement Jaxx set out to make an electronic album that was less repetitive than what was currently being put out by their contemporaries, and I felt they somewhat succeeded on that front. The songs that weren’t really to my liking though definitely fell into the repetitive category, and they tended to feature elements that I found pretty grating. All in all though, this was a fine album, but I don’t think it’s something I’d be quick to go back to.

A couple of catchy songs on here, but overall I found it bloated and repetitive. I see why it's on the list, and didn't hate it, but it's not as good as their contemporaries like Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, etc.
Not a fan of house music in general, so this was hit or miss for me. Red Alert is a certified banger, couldn't help but like the funky bass stabs, but nothing else on the album really stood out for me. Don't know if I would choose to put this on again, but it's ok as background music I guess. 2.5/5

This is a strange one. I like this album, but I wouldn't under any circumstances include it on a list of albums that anyone should hear before they die. Its dance music, repetitive synth and beats, like the stuff you would hear at a bar with blacklights and blue directional lighting behind wall cutouts. I guess its historical? Anyway, not bad but I cant do more than 3 stars. 3/5

Remedy is the debut album from Basement Jaxx, which was met with near-universal acclaim. This is a great collection of house tracks - danceable, fun, and inventive songs. House music can be boring, and defaults toward repetitive elements. Basement Jaxx created this work to be a "Remedy" to the linear, robotic norms of early 90s dance music. This album is considered among the best EDM albums ever released. It includes some of the pair's biggest hits, like "Red Alert," and "Rendez-Vu," and a collection of interesting, varied tracks that will get almost anyone up out of their seat.
Remember the hype about this one. Wasn't really convinced at the time. But in retrospect, it's a good electronic album, surprisingly holding up far better than I expected. Some people (me included) grumbled about the hype surrounding this record in 1999, because it apparently pandered to mind-numbing, instant gratification--especially compared to more left-field electronic acts from labels such as Warp or Ninja Tunes (check out Brett DiCrescenzo's scathing yet hilarious review on Pitchfork when the LP came out--where the author fortunately also makes fun of himself and his expectations--to have an example of such grumbling). But to be honest, those complaints feel like moot points today. For better or for worse, *Remedy*'s unhinged sense of fun, inventive spirit, and lack of boundaries, actually pointed towards the *actual* 21st century. Amazing to see that there would actually be no Jaimie xx without this record. And you can even find more "contemporary" reference points. *Remedy*'s vocoder elements, for instance, were not merely a nod to past retrofuturistic disco endeavors (as they were in Daft Punk's music). The loony vocal parts of "Rendez-Vu" and "Yo-Yo", for example, perfectly fit with the current hyperpop "nonsense". It was 100gecs decades before 100gecs existed. No surprise the latter recently collaborated with Basement Jaxx on a remix of "Where Your Head At?", the great hit single from their second album *Rooty* (sampling none other than Gary Numan!). As a whole, *Rooty* didn't age very well, however, because it dug a maximalist trench where UK-Club-indebted cuts featuring a lot of unimaginative female vocalists felt a little too derivative, with too many "manufactured" emotions as a result and not enough real pizzazz. That sophomore album was supposed to be wilder than the debut. But it ironically sounds both tamer and more tiring in retrospect. It's on *Remedy* that the right balance between maximalist and minimalistic tendencies had been reached from the get-go, enhancing the "wild" moments, but also shedding a more favorable light on the more subtle ones. Of course, you have the obvious hits (opener "Rendez-Vu", "Red Alert"...). But the vast majority of the deeper cuts are as interesting as the latter, if not more (minimalistic "Same Old Show" and its obsessive Selectors sample ; maximalist "Don't Give Up" and its fat, epic, expansive synth bassline...). And for both types of tracks, you have quite impressive, multi-layered soundscapes it's rewarding to get immersed in, like those lush and non-linear acoustic guitar flourishes on "Rendez-Vu", or the sly, enticing synthetic layers in the background of a bunch of other tracks. It's thanks to those details that genuine emotions manage to seep in. Of course, some stuff here and there still feels a little "dated". But not more than any deep cut on Daft Punk albums. Thomas Bangalter himself recognized that Basement Jaxx actually made more groundbreaking music than his in 1999. If there is one thing I can say about this list it's that it's made it so I never want to hear electronic music anymore. All of the albums are boring because of the repetition and they also all start to sound the same. Along came Remedy by Basement Jaxx! At first I was impressed about how it was unique, in that the songs were interesting and different than all of the other electronic albums I have been subjected to. Then around song ten, I was bored again. I've said it before, I'll say it again, this music is only good for the clubs and drugs. It's no good for a sunny Thursday morning.
Yet another album that doesn't interest me at all. Maybe dance isn't a genre for me either. I like listening to techno or trance. I have no problem with repetitive music. But this simple stomping produced by a rhythm machine is boring. After a few tracks, I finished the whole thing. 1/5

If you heard the first 30 seconds of each song, you heard the whole thing. the best song was red light and the rest of them aren't worth listening to.

Yeah I feel like Remedy doesn't meet my memory of Basement Jaxx, the singles are better than the other stuff on there, which is quite crap, but even then only Red Alert and Bingo Bango are actually good. Not sure those two alone get this up to a 3, it's very heavy lifting if they do.
Don't have any nostalgia for this, can't recall hearing any of it before. Singles sound okay, if a bit dated, it's very very 90s, not really for me. Red Alert is head and shoulders above the rest, not bothered by the rest of it, 2/5.

This sounds like the sort of terrible music played too loud in over-expensive bars I used to have to go to with friends back in my single days. I hated it then and hate it now. Or it's just a set of incidental music stings from TV shows. Either way, it's not something I'd care to listen to again.

i will give this one credit where credit's due: i'm not the biggest electronic/dance music guy out there, but i try to go into every album with an open mind. most of the time it's too ambient or too trance-y for my taste. going into this album, i was expecting a little bit more of the same, but this album is pretty fun to listen to. in my experience, it's a little hit or miss, flip-flopping between 'fun' and 'annoying' but i would rather bounce between those two options than consistently boring. and boring this album is not. it's not totally my cup of tea, but i at least appreciated it for the slightly out-of-left-field party that it brought. it's not generic, it's not boring, it is definitely its own thing, and i appreciated it for that.
In fairness, it was probably pretty fresh in 1999, but all I can see now is the background to a 2004 JC Penney commercial.

Hated it then, but if you offered me the chance to return to 1999, with the condition I had to listen to this shit 1000 more times, I'd bite your hand off. Remedy I have not thought of Basement Jaxx for a long time. A long time. They were of course really big at the end of the 90s and although I’m by no means a connoisseur of electronic music I never really got into them in the same way as I did with bands like the Chemical Brothers or Daft Punk or even people like Bentley Rhythm Ace or Apollo 440. Rendez-Vu I remember well and is a great bit of, I presume, balearic influenced house music, the spanish guitars giving a nice soft edge. Yo Yo carries on the vocoder vocals but I like the disco/funk bass and the slightly spare groove is great. Jump’n’Shout is a fun bit of ragga house, the synth bass is nice. I really U Can’t Stop Me, the slightly broken rhythm pattern and vague garage feel is pretty cool, again great bass. 4 bangers to start. Never been that keen on Red Alert. Although I can appreciate it’s catchiness, I think it’s the mannerisms of the vocalist that I'm not sure about. Always Be There is fine, if a bit forgettable, it feels like its straining for catchiness but not quite getting there. Same Old Show is good, sampling On My Radio and making a very good slightly dubby house track. Bingo Bango is a bingo banger - always liked this one and is great bit of hook laden house. Stop 4 Love is a nice change of style, a kind of necessary break from some of the four on the floor house, a nice bit of atmospheric electronica. Don’t Give Up is decent, I like the flattened EQ in the more intense sections, but definitely feeling the length of the album now. Being With U I can take or leave, there are some nice little keyboard bits but is a bit underwhelming. I like the disco and funk influence particularly the bass and the overall good time party music vibe, however there is no getting away that it starts to feel a bit samey over the course of the hour, but then I suppose if you are not into guitar based music you could say the same about a lot of albums I like. Having said that they do seem to have front loaded the first half with their better tracks, there is certainly a bit of filler towards the end. Also I do think rhythmic/tempo repetitiveness can start to get a bit samey more quickly than melodic or harmonic repetitiveness, and obviously dance, big beat, house all have broadly similar tempos, so unless its a DJ a mix an hour of sequential dance tracks can drag a bit (as they don’t necessarily lend themselves to the idea of the ‘traditional’ album), even if taken individually many of the tracks are good. Anyway the first half is a great listen and there are some excellent tracks, more than most dance albums have, and also moments throughout, although I’m more likely to pick tracks for a playlist than listen to in its entirety again. Tricky to rate, somewhere between 3 and 4. It’s probably a 3 as an album, but a 4 for them being great at what they do and for making at least 3 or 4 bona fide pop house bangers. I found it to be… okay. Not much about it stuck out enough to demonstrate to me why it’s on this list of albums. I can occasionally vibe with a drum and bass type album, especially while exercising, but I gave this a second spin while running and just wasn’t that into it.

Feels like you need to do a load of cocaine and ecstasy, in 1999, as a 20 year old, to really enjoy this. Some parts feel like a Daft Punk imitation. Some parts want to give me a heart attack. Some parts are alright. Not required listening. 2/5

Remedy is a very upbeat and uptempo album. I usually wouldn't enjoy this type of music, but I like this! I like the Selecter sample on Same Old Show. I'm convinced that the bass, on Always Be There, is sampled, and modified, from King Crimson's Sheltering Sky, even though I don't see this documented anywhere. The "bass" sound is actually produced by Tony Levin's Chapman Stick (a 10- or 12- stringed instrument). Liked Songs Added: - Rendez-Vu
Drum n bass, with some interesting layering and vocal presence. Overall an enjoyable foray into the contemporary development of EDM. I think this album has a very soothing feel to it and is captivating in some cases, while overdone in others. Not something that I would attempt to revisit in the future, but had I experienced this when I was 20 perhaps a different perspective would have formed.

super fun!!! i think it would be much more enjoyable outside of a vacuum because atmosphere seems very important for this album, and it seems like my environment is not the intended way to consume this it somehow feels ahead of its time while simultaneously being so PAINFULLY a product of its time it is also pretty inconsistent, the singles are all really great, specifically: Red Alert and Bingo Bango, but tracks of this quality aren't found throughout this ONE. I can’t believe this appeared on a list for me. Just a lot of what made Disco insufferable. This album is definitely insufferable.
I love electronic music. But I prefer music that's challenging, and I'm afraid that an album of electro-tinged dance music misses the target here. I do think, however, that it's a question of how this is played. I reckon (were I to be back in my clubbing days), that I'd love individual tracks in the club situation. But not really as a rather lengthy album.

At the end of the album is a song called don't give up, which felt like it was taunting me that I was still listening it and couldn't turn it off. Also there is a song with random moaning. Screw this album, never want to hear this again.
Filled to the brim with juicy details, this album fills in the gaps left by many electronic music groups putting way too much faith in thei staying power of their loops. Some groups nail the satisfying loop and create repetitive 5+ minute long songs worth listening to, but Basement Jaxx largely accomplish this satisfaction differently by frequently adding in new elements, and starting off dense to begin with. They're clearly masters of sound production, so many sounds and samples feel so novel. This shit must be so much fun at clubs. Overall, I feel that this has shown me a different approach to club friendly music that retains it's craftsmanship through unique sounds and rewards over a loop rather than a really solid loop. Some songs start off weak here and there, but I felt that all of them build to something with a great, continous, delicious payoff.

When I saw this was another pre-2000s English electronic artist, I was skeptical on how much I'd like it. This album slaps hard and was way better than I expected, sounds very advanced especially for 1999 and a debut. The song with the lady moaning got to be too much, hope that one doesn't come up on shuffle.
