I LOVED it
This is why I like this project, such a nice hidden gem
Super intricate fuzzed out grunge with a side of being desperately horny for someone who is necrotizing your heart. Like if Deftones didn’t go with the butt rock elements of grunge
I loved every minute. Such a heartbreaking album, but so timeless. I came to Afghan Whigs by way of Har Mar Superstar (iykyk) and while I am still digging into them, this is probably my second favorite so far.
Rock alternativo de primeira! Belíssimo álbum. Moondrop May.
Perhaps the finest rock album to ever come out of Ohio. What Jail is Like is an all-time fav. I'm vaguely aware that Greg Dulli is unliked personally for some reason, but I totally dig their 90s output and feel like they never got the respect they deserved. I can only assume this is because people are jealous of Ohio and hating on the Afghan Whigs is the only way they know how to express that.
This album was a big part of my late teens, early 20s and I'm not sure why I never saw this band live. What Jail is Like is epic. They should have been more popular, particularly for their later album 1965. Rounding up for being the coolest band to ever come out of Ohio.
Now you know était ben bonne. Gentlemen m'a fait penser à du Mars Volta dans les rythmes saccadés et la voix éraillée
Despite the creepy cover, this was unexpectedly beautiful
Such an incredibly beautiful and raw album
In my opinion one of the most underrated bands ever. Top quality. No skips
If 'I hate you, please don't leave me' was an album. Lyrically this is a hard listen, dude is going through it. Musically it's enjoyable, especially the drums. I've listened to this a few times over the years. Solid.
Beautiful.
This album kills. All the grunge records that came out around this sound like boys cosplaying as degenerate men compared to this. The melodrama is delicious the atmosphere oppressive yet, in a glimmer, uplifting. What a band!
Great album from my younger days. Hadn't listened to them in a long time.
Definitely a hidden gem from this list for me
I was 20 years old when this album came out, and everything about it spoke deeply to my soul. As I struggled with relationship issues, the lyrics felt like they knew what I was going through, and the thought I had deep in me. If I could have worn out the cd like you could with a cassette, it would have happened. The album holds up, and I still love it.
Is this grunge?

5/5 - really enjoyed the feeling of this album
I picked up a used copy of this in 1994 on the strength of "Debonair" and "Gentlemen", which had been getting some play on MTV. It was different from the grunge that was was dominant at the time, being a little more soulful than your typical alternative band. Over the years, Greg Dulli's become a staple of alternative/indie music for me with the Afghan Whigs and with his other project the Twilight Singers. The first half of this album is flawless with every song a standout. I really like how Dulli reintroduces the chorus of the opener "If I Were Going" in "Debonair", three songs later. It's a cool use of a motif you don't see a lot in alternative rock albums. The second half isn't quite as strong, but there's some cool ideas nonetheless - I like bringing in Marcy Mays as a guest lead vocalist on "My Curse" and I like that they throw in a cover of a Tyrone Davis song, which is unusual for an album that's supposed to be a concept album about a breakup. Anyway, awesome album. Highlights are "If I Were Going", "Debonair", "Gentlemen", "Be Sweet", and "When We Two Parted". 5 stars.
Beter dan best goed
It took me a long time to come around to liking the Afghan Whigs but now I’m all in. The record is wonderful.
Love this. Been a fan of this album since it came out.
I've heard of The Afghan Whigs before, but I don't think I've ever heard any of their music before, and I certainly couldn't tell you what they sound like. I tend to enjoy rock music from this era though, so I have moderately high expectations for this album. Let's jump into it! This album snagged my attention from the first song, and never let go of it over the course of its eleven songs. I really loved the guitar playing on every song, and the band's sound was really unique. This album sounded like nothing else I've ever listened to from this era. I'm usually big on hooks and melodies in the music that I listen to, but I enjoyed this album despite its lack of reliance on those elements to construct its sound. The guitar playing and other instruments did a great job of crafting a dark mood that matched the lyrical tone. Speaking of other instruments, I really enjoyed the piano and mellotron arrangements utilized on this album as well; they really added a lot of depth to the sound. The cello playing on "Fountain and Fairfax" was amazing as well, and I'd have to rank this song as my favorite on the whole album. As much as I enjoyed "Fountain and Fairfax" though, the whole album was really strong from start to finish, and there wasn't a single song I didn't enjoy. I thought the songwriting was really strong on this album too. These lyrics were certainly full of heartbreak, rage, and dead-end despair, but I thought they captured those feelings in a meaningful way. This album really caught me surprise today, and I can see why it has a reputation as one of the best rock albums of the nineties.
exceptional in every way, the most obviously underrated band of the 90s
I love the grunge era but never listened to this band before now. Groovy and emotionally raw to the point of being a little uncomfortable. Will listen again and again.
Got into the Whigs about 5 years ago. was aware of them via John peel but that was in their grunge days. fell off my radar. This album is the start of their great period. Some achingly heartfelt tracks on this and some absolute bangers. five fucking stars.
this is like... horny teen boy angst in a bottle?
After the first track, this was a perfect album. Somehow getting better and better with each song. So much emotion packed into every single note. What a fucking gem
Quando a junção de camadas sonoras carregadas de guitarras demonstram que a busca por conexão se transforma em um jogo de manipulação e desilusão, desafiando as convenções e revelando a essência crua da condição humana.
This is one of those albums I wish I’d known about back in the early and mid-‘90s. It’s a mix of alternative and rock with a raw, gritty sound that adds texture and emphasizes the underground indie rock feel. I love the rhythm guitar, which has such a strong drive that grounds the songs and sets their tone and direction. The production is also raw and gritty but still meticulous, giving each instrument its own space to stand out and shine.
One of my favorite albums of the 90’s
Another band that I wish I'd got into sooner. Quite grungey, but subtler and more varied.
Great AW album, just like Congregation and 1965, but Gentlemen might be their best. Mainly listened to their music in the 90s, but it might be time to check out their more recent albums. my vote in 1993: 10/10 and in 2024: 10/10.
Intense alternative guitar rock. Very impressive.
Atmospheric and soulful.
I was surprised I hadn't heard of this band or album since it should have been in my wheelhouse. Then again, discoverability wasn't stellar before the internet. I can hear a lot of other bands' inspirations in this, both forward and backward in time, giving this album a bit of a timeless and nostalgic feel for me, though I'm not sure what it does for others.
I thought this was very good. Enjoyed the album and listening to other related music after it ended, will definitely listen to more.
Very good album. Couldn't stop listening and got better the second time through. Will add this one to the rotation!
One of my favorite albums ever.
5/5 the emotional delivery won me over. i can hear dulli going through life events as he sings. the fact that the best song My Curse isnt sung by him speaks to the quality of the songs themselves and the band performance. i can almost hear the producer yelling notes to the band as they play only to be ignored.
So good
Great album, really enjoyed the sound and the concept.
This album was a scuzzy revelation when I first heard it and I loved it for that.
Irresistibly heavy, heady and at times hedonistic, Gentlemen is presented by Afghan Whigs approaching ascendancy. It's almost hard to find a flaw with this record, apart from it being not long enough. But it is best that things are this way. It gives off a feeling of warmth and comfort, oddly enough. Appropriate choice of color palette for the album cover, too.
Amazing
Never heard this band before but still makes me feel the 90's nostalgia feeling creeping in. This was a good record and still sounds good 30 years later. Album cover is a little bit creepy, reminiscent of another album I discovered from this list, Throbbing Gristle's D.O.A.
Take a dive down into the dark, debaucherous depths of Dulli and The Whigs’s most well-known—and most malignant—masterpiece; fucked up as it might seem, it’s one of my favorite places to be.
A great find for me! The vocals were much weaker than the instrumentation on this albums though the lyrics were decent and the vocals did grow on me as I listened. Since I didn’t know anything about this band the second vocalist was a fun surprise (and she was great on My Curse). The guitars reminded me a lot of Ash from a few days ago. “Debonair” had a funky intro and the solo on “My Curse” was my playing style so that was fun. The album sounds like a hybrid between Pearl Jam and Drive By Truckers. Would do a 4.5 if possible but I think this would keep growing on me if I listened more so I’ll give it a 5.
I had been meaning to check in on Afghan Whigs as they were the subject of Bandsplain this week and I had never heard them. This is one of the most intense records I’ve heard and it absolutely rips. May not be a repeater for me unless I’m really in the mood but goddamn this is excellent
Great album, good rock
Not a 5/5 but can't give it 4/5. 93/100 would be fair. Brilliant album.
Amazing to hear the origin of kings of Leon music
This album is really disgusting but also really good. With lyrics like this I was really surprised to see a song with a female vocalist, but it was pretty awesome. The only song I didn't love was the 2nd to last one. Finding albums like this is what makes this list fun. Score: 90 Art: 80
Fantastic album
One of my favorite albums of all time. Before I listened to Gentlemen I was a boy, after listening to it I was a man. The Afghan wigs aren't easily my favorite band and I have seen them perform numerous times.
Wow, awesome mix of grunge and psychedelic guitars. Definitely hear some king gizz in here.
This is so '90's
Afghan Lids
Disfruté sobre todo "Gentlemen", "Be Sweet", "When We Two Parted" y "Now You Know". 10/10
it was okay
surprisingly, I liked it more than expected. really nice melodies. I will have to check other stuff by them
Great record crossing styles to ultimately deliver an emotional gut punch
Almost a 4
This is an excellent record that takes me back to my time in college. Yeah the singer’s voice isn’t great, but it is unique and it fits the style of the music being played. Also, the band is excellent and there are some bangers on this record, including the title track, What Jail Is Like, and Debonaire. A fun trip down memory lane. Great stuff.
The instrumentals often remind me of 90s bands I know. I mostly enjoy the snarled vocals, the emotion comes through really well. Often feels emo-esque which adds to my enjoyment, maybe it's the mix of personal/confessional angry vocals and punk influences. Occasional weird lyrics and overly-idiosyncratic singing style pull it down a bit.
(Light 8/10) Dark, depressing and thoroughly toxic, this album explores many different angles of bad relationships and the breakups that result. It's a fascinating record with some genius songwriting and especially if you appreciate inventive guitar playing. A rather underrated 90's grunge-adjacent record that got overshadowed by the Seattle scene.
Liked this very much.
A blown vein of emotion, no wonder everyone thinks it's autobiographical
Greg Dulli inventing toxic masculinity. There’s a rawness about this, an honesty about what it means to feel like a selfish, flawed person. It’s more lyrically sophisticated than self-hating grungey contemporaries like Alice In Chains. There’s some dynamic, almost funky riffs, which create a great contrast with the dark subject matter, and a few moments of beauty like in the closing track.
Really enjoyable
I had never heard of The Afghan Whigs before today, but I really dug their sound. At times their sound reminded me of the Butthole Surfers, NIN, U2, and REM, all of whose music I really like. I found this a compelling listen and I really enjoyed it. Fours stars.
I liked this. I knew Fountain and Fairfax because it was on the My So Called Life soundtrack back in the day. I enjoyed most of the rest of the songs, several of which had similar sounds to F&F. (4)
I really like this, more than most grunge music -- there's a lot of jangliness and colour in the instrumentation. Fuck the negative reviews, god forbid an incel have a little motion.
Fun takes and barzzz
Band that I was aware of only because its an interesting name but never listened to them. Kind of a Replacements meets Cursive vibe. Overall a good listen and a band I will dig into.
A weird album. It’s got that alternative feel to it but the vocals give a sense of classic rock like Aerosmith. It’s a cool album though.
Solid alt rock break up album
👍🏻
Really great album. Kind of rough, beautiful, melancholic...
2 solide songs on it that I liked and added to my playlist
Messy in a very intentional way. It leans into its darker themes without smoothing them out, which makes it more compelling than comfortable.
Enjoyable and unique, the style has many different influences. I enjoyed this one, might throw it on again
This album just drips with regret, from the unsettling cover to the songs which are littered with tales of bad decisions, bad drugs and unhealthy relationships. Musically it’s kind of post punk spidery rock but imbued with Greg Duilis thwarted ambition as a soul singer. Never got it at the time, too young, too naive. Makes an awful lot of sense now
I actually really enjoyed this
first listen not bad
This band is brand new to me and I’m honestly surprised I enjoyed this album as much as I did. Perhaps a week ago I would’ve hated this and who knows, maybe tomorrow I’ll hate it. As for now though, I enjoyed it quite a bit!
This is one you have to turn up loud to appreciate. Urge Overkill meets Fugazi meets Dinosaur Jr; vulnerable, aggressive, raw, passionate and regretful. If I heard this at 15 it might have changed my life.
3.5
90s rock break up album sitting squarely in the second stage of grief. Bitter and angry lyrically, supported by cutting guitars and yet somewhat funky beats. A great new discovery
I criticize some of these albums for fading into the background while my mind wanders to something else, I found the opposite to be true on this album. I’d be trying to figure what he’s trying to say with the lyrics but then an unexpected new guitar riffs pulls my attention to the music and then there’d be another interesting lyric and I’d get pulled away again. It kind of reminds of of the Fugazi album in that regard, something interesting seems to be happening in every song. I thought the Afghan Whigs were a 00’s indie rock band, I think I probably thought that because they must be referenced often as inspiration for those acts. You can definitely hear the influence in acts like Kurt Vile, Big Thief, War on Drugs, the National (they’re even both from Cincinnati) even if those bands softened the edges quite a bit. Very cool album, will listen again.
Really good album. I've always liked this band. It's not as good as 1965 though.
4.0
Gotta love when this list introduces me to an album/band that I’ve no idea existed. Where have I been? This is a helluva album.
Surprised by this. I've heard a few of their songs and thought "meh."
Overall, I like this. Decent mid-tier rock with some angsty vocals. After listening a couple of times, I haven't really heard much of the "toxic male" stuff that people seem to be complaining about the most on this album. I mean yes, some is obvious when he's talking about his crotch, but I'm guessing much of it is more subtle. But that's because I don't really hear much of what he's saying. Sometimes I forget I'm listening with a reason and get distracted or he's a bit mush-mouthed at times. Which is one of the reasons I won't rate this much higher than I will: It's solid and fine, but not too grabby, so my attention gets focused elsewhere. It's not quite interesting enough to keep me here. When I do focus in though, I find the music to be pretty good. Cool instrumentation here and there. I like the growl in his voice. I might be the only person in the world to think about or make this comparison, but he sounds Very Much like the fella from Dramarama in the growly bits. What can I say? I like this type of music. I think if they experimented a bit more musically, it would be more attention grabbing. I'd like to give this a 3.7, and I feel wary of giving it a 4 because it's not quite super. But, I guess my distraction might have been my own fault and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Let's go with that 4.
This was very good, really enjoyed it. Instrumentals were visceral at times and the lyrics (what i registered of them) were the same
197/1089 i quite enjoy this type of folky/punky rock, it’s very atmospheric in its production. the “folky” aspect is more in certain sections of guitar playing/production etc. i could picture some of the riffs on a Pogues or Fairport Convention song. I don’t care for a lot of the lyrics but i particularly liked the vocals across the record, and the switch up to their female vocalist on My Curse was very cool and effective. andending on an instrumental track was i choice that really worked for me faves: if i were going, gentlemen, fountain and fairfax, brother woodrow/closing prayer, my curse, what jail is like 74/100
Given a superficial listen, this album is easily misunderstood. The lyrics cover some toxic shit. However, it is not a celebration of toxic masculinity, it is a denouncement of these behaviors. It is a raw breakup album, written by someone who acknowledges fucked up behavior and realizes that this caused Dulli nothing but misery. He found another singer for “My Curse”, telling the other side of the story, because he could not sing it himself, nor did he feel it was appropriate. The pain and melancholy are obvious throughout the record. Lyrics aside, the Whigs are great musicians. The shredding, grungy guitars are expected for any band coming from Sub Pop in the early 90s, but the bluesy, soul-influenced riffs, were different. This funky yet emotionally angular music was a different kind of alt-rock at the time of its release, and it still holds up better than many of its contemporary releases. The grunge exists, but it is mostly in the background. I love listening to Whig’s instrumentation. I can see how this album isn’t for everyone, but it is regarded by many as a masterpiece and its inclusion on the list is absolutely warranted. Those who did not listen to the record in its entirety almost certainly missed the point because this is an album intended to be listened to in its entirety.
This slaps! Really took me by surprise but Gentlemen was a pleasure. Not much variation between tracks - it's pretty much a flat horizon in terms of sound and tone throughout - but it's good indie alt-rock. Solid basslines throughout. Some weird stuff going on lyrically (+ with the lyrical delivery) but it doesn't feel too up its own ass. Kind of loses its steam towards the second half of the album (sans My Curse) but I'd give this a relisten any day of the week. Really hemmed and hawed over giving this a 5 but I can't really imagine this album sticking in the memory as thick as some of the best on this list. Fav tracks: Be Sweet, Gentlemen, Debonair, My Curse, Now You Know
All the Afghan whigs albums sound quite the same to me which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it doesnt encourage to listen to them too often. However there are couple of exceptions and this album is one of them. It has really strong set of songs and band playing at their very best. The top track for me is ’My Curse’ which is really emotionally sung by Marcy Mays as a guest vocalist. Probably 4,5/5, but not quite 5/5.
I listened to this several times. I can see this music helping many through a tough time.
This surprised me - l liked it a lot.
Even before listening, I’m really intrigued by this album! I’m excited for another alt rock record. Starting off with If I were going. That subtle drumbeat fading in is a really cool effect. This is super cool so far. The title track, Gentlemen, was a great listen. Like this is the type of stuff that makes music so fun. I never knew this band existed before, but they’re probably going to be in my daily rotation now. Be Sweet and Debonair are also both really enjoyable tracks. Specifically I loved the guitar in Debonair. When we two parted also had some nice guitar work. A bit of a change of pace, but may I say a welcome one! This track is honestly beautiful in its own way. It’s being dropped straight into my moody songs playlist. Fountain and Fairfax was alright. I enjoyed it, it had a lot of good vibes, but it wasn’t my favourite off this album. I loved the piano in What Jail is Like. In general, that was a really solid track. My Curse was awesome. It was a bit jarring to suddenly have a female voice on the record, but oh my god was is perfect. I keep coming back was another slower song, I really liked the lyrics. It’s one that I’m going to have to listen to again I think to get the full effect. Brother Woodrow/closing prayer, as a closer, was a lovely piece of music. I’m still not sure how I feel about primarily instrumental tracks closing, but this one was a good one. Overall, great album, I really needed this! 4/5 ⭐️, almost perfect. A good portion of this album is getting added to various playlists of mine. 21/1089
Great rainy day and night drive album
I thought this was good. Grungy/ alt rock with a few more soulful tracks and a very emotional vibe given the lyrical content. The whole package definitely comes together to communicate the songwriter's feelings about his breakup
4⭐️ feels like a controversial rating like the lyrics aren’t the most beautiful (lol) but I don’t think that’s what this album’s trying to do! it’s grungey and I LOVE the heavy guitars. songs I already knew: n/a fave new song(s): debonair
A band I'd always heard off but never really listened to, which is a shame.
They're labelled as grunge but I didn't think of it like that. Alt-rock in the 90s, jangly guitar over heavy bass, I imagine it's where people who were into grunge would say there's more to it than Nirvana and Alice in Chains. I saw it connecting to Sonic Youth and Mogwai.
Hits a nice alt rock grunge spot for me with touches that remind me of emo like Sunny Day Real Estate. I like that when they go for it they really go for it and it’s all very unashamedly emotional. A little to misanthropic in parts for me mind. Solid to high 4.
Not sure why I haven’t listened to these guys before. My generation alternative, making me think of soundgarden and the like. 4
This catchy alternative album is more on the emo side, which sure makes the Afghan Whigs ahead of the curve in 1993. Its use of grunge is spot on, though. I found these lyrics to be exceptionally good. In some ways, I was reminded of the Smiths--the fact it was alternative, emotive, and lyrically strong. I didn't much care for the guest vocalist in "My Curse," but I won't hold it against the Afghan Whigs (much).
This was an interesting take on something very, very similar to grunge! It has many of the elements and the makings of grunge, but is not quite the same -- ultimately, you can hear the deviations from the Seattle-born grunge genre, "proper". The vocals contain a lot less yelling than typical grunge, which helps this album shine through as the proto-emo style that grunge was. There are also a lot of moments in this album where the music and singing borders on ethereally "pretty" -- a nice opposition to other angrier, harder hitting moments. "Gentlemen" was a good album listen from a band I was not familiar with. This is probably a 3.5 for me, but I'm a such a sucker for 90s alternative and grunge, this was a no brainer round-up for me.
Toll gefühlvoll
Some solid rock and roll. I liked it and would give it another listen.
Wow, surprised this has so many haters. Cracking good guitar rock, with the distinctive scream of Greg Dulli, makes for an engaging time. The seemed to be lumped in with grunge around this time, but they actually had a lot more of interest than most around that time, and the songs still stand up today. ‘Gentlemen’, ‘Debonair’, ‘Be Sweet’ and the closing ‘Brother Woodrow’ are my highlights.
This was pretty great even though no individual song jumped out at me. Feel like it would benefit from a deeper listen but even so it really popped.
Never heard of The Afghan Whigs before today. The initial version of the band was called Black Republicans which is pretty tongue in cheek and funny too. It's very dark and moody but I really like the music itself. I really like alt rock that gets heavy without running into metal or punk territory, it's more like post-rock in its heaviness. Excellent bass playing and the kick sound is very thumpy more like R&B which is cool. "My Curse" has a totally different lead singer, because the lyrics were too honest. That's definitely a neat footnote, especially for a first major-label release. The Whigs were definitely doing things their way. The lyrics overall are really out there, it sounds like the lead singer is kind of a nightmare. Very honest, and kudos for that, but he also got in a fight in with a bouncer that put him in a coma (6 years later) so maybe it's more a diary than a retrospective on "who I used to be". It's hard to listen to in places because this guy is really in pain about losing his relationship but it's also pretty starkly his fault in a lot of ways, and he knows it. There's a tough thing to consider there - you can feel really bad about something and it's still inevitable that it will end due to your actions. Definitely a highlight so far on my 1001 albums journey and a true unknown for me.
Never heard of them before, but damn they go harrd. Energizing 90s rock, switching between laid-back melodies and then melodically punching you in the face again
Fantastic record or at least it was at the time of release, I can still go back to it and enjoy it front to back and it hits the old nostalgia button so I'm a little biased on this one
4 de 5
Fav track: My curse
8/10
didn’t know this is what they even sounded like. pretty good album!
Grim and grimy, good album.
Pleasantly surprised, there are some really good songs in this album. The name did ring a bell, although I had never listened to anything by them. I will look for more of them. 4,4/5.
Solid!
This is something of a rarity. An early 90s alternative album that I've not heard before and really enjoyed. I was aware of the band but have never listened to them. This is a great album.
The Afghan Whigs are one of those bands I should theoretically love but never got into for whatever reason. Listening to Gentlemen, I wonder if it's because I have limited patience for louche dudes who probably worship Bukowski. (Some quick googling for Greg Dulli + Charles Bukowski turns up LOTS of results.) Not to say these songs are autobiographical, and it's reductive to classify all of Gentlemen that way. I do like this—I listened twice, once on the stereo & once on headphones, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The book refers to Gentlemen as the Whigs' masterpiece; while I'm not familiar enough to go that far, I can see the argument.
Love the music, but the voice can be a bit grating at a few points.
Although the singer has nothing to differentiate them from any other alt-rock act of the time period the music delivered by the band is next level and makes this album worthy of interest
Surprisingly good
I've overlooked this band because their name is stupid, but this surprised me with some real energy.
I wasn't looking forward to this. I don't know why. I knew nothing of the band but the name and and the cover art made me think some kind of boring Belle and Sebastian type thing. I was wrong. The first half of this was great. Didn't carry all the way through but it rocked. A low 4.
Didn't know I needed this today. It's got Alt-Rock written all over it, but it's gritty, mature and sounds interesting throughout. A pleasant surprise. 3.5/5
J’y retournerai certainement
Nicee
I first heard Afghan Whigs when a live version of Going to Town was on a free CD I got with a music mag in the 90s. It really stood out at the time but the band wound up a couple of years later and I never really got into Greg Dulli's various other projects. I knew Gentlemen and Debonair but not really listened to the whole album. Its a great record, but a tad bleak in it's view of male-female relationships, I could listen to a few tracks but across a whole album the grievances wear a bit thin.
top 3: - be sweet - if I were going - my curse
Thoughts before listening: My impression of the Afghan Whigs has always been that they were an alt-rock/grunge band that leaned into an R&B sound. That being said, I know very little else about them, and they represent a pretty big hole in my musical listening history. It seems like I should be into them, but I just have never really given them much of a chance. Glad to have a reason to now. Review: So the R&B aspects of this are maybe a bit overstated. There is definitely a certain vibe and groove to these songs that was missing from the Afghan Whigs' contemporaries, but its definitely still a 90s alt-rock sound. This is great, being very reminiscent of other music I was into at that time. I do see some negative reviews on here, which probably isn't surprising...I feel like these guys are the American equivalent of the Brit-pop bands that I've been annoyed by on this list. However, this sound totally resonates with me. As suspected, this was right up my alley, and I wish I hadn't slept on these guys for so long. 4-stars
12/30 mellow and Radiohead-y
Completely missed this band at the time. Reminded me of Smashing Pumpkins (even has a similar cover to Siamese Dream) and Placebo in parts. I enjoyed it while it lasted but none of it really stuck in my head like tunes from the bands I mentioned do. Maybe needs repeated listens.
Valeu a pena o sofrimento. Uma das capas mais lindas que já vi também. 4/5
Pretty good alt rock album. The remaster sounded very clean. 4/5
First time hearing them, it his the spot!
Again, never let them to, and somehow never comes up with similar artist, but now one that I absolutely won’t listen to more in the future. Great consistent album from start to finish.
Highlights: Gentlemen, Be Sweet
Really strong album. Definitely feels of the grunge era, but retains a unique feel that doesn’t sound like it’s trying to be a “me too” of that era.
Gen X cry alt but it’s actually pretty good. My Curse is a banger.
Great
'And it don't bleed / And it don't breathe / It's locked its jaws / And now it's swallowing.' Grungy tho not exactly grunge, Gentlemen is a visceral and sensible breakup record: 'Ladies, let me tell you about myself / I got a dick for a brain / And my brain is gonna sell my ass to you.' The concept album, w/ an uncomplicated notion at its core, does a lot in the way of supporting the cause for good songwriting, b/c that's ultimately what steals the show. It's not Greg Dulli's voice - not dull but not particularly notable either - or the intensity of the instrumentation. It's not even the lyrics necessarily, tho there are moments that have their shine. It's the structure and the flow, it's the abstract gestalt that somehow delivers something concrete in the end.
This is so odd and so neat to listen to. It would be 5 stars except i don't want to hear the lyrics again
Some of the best sounding alt-rock to grace this planet. Lyrics are kinda goofy at times but they're still really good. Might return.
An fantastic document of the grunge-adjacent ‘90s indie-rock underground, with excellent guitar playing from Rick McCollum and lyrics from Greg Dulli: The line “Think I’m scared of girls, well maybe, but I’m not afraid of you / You wanna scare me then you’ll cling to me no matter what I do” hits every time. Special shout-out to the guest vocals on “My Curse” from the singer of Scrawl, a fellow Ohio outfit and hidden gem. The album lulls a little on side one, but from “Fountain and Fairfax” on, it finds a deeper, rarer groove, and it’s a 5.
#10, and the second one that I own. The first half (ESPECIALLY "Fountain and Fairfax') is still more powerful than the second, but I'd also forgotten how much I like "My Curse" and the last song. Great listening to this again.
Better tgan Coldplay
I believe a Cincinnati band!
I had heard of the band before without ever listening to them. It took me a couple of tracks to get into it but when it clicked with me I ended up really enjoying it. I definitely think it’s going to be a grower so could easily go up a star when I do my second listen later. Top Track - Debonair but I also really liked Brother Woodrow/Closing Prayer
good breakup album
Fantastic album! I’m kind of amazed that this is the first I’ve listened to this band. The energetic mix of grunge-like vocals and jangly guitars offers a more accessible sound compared to some of the louder and more distorted bands of the era. Really enjoyed this record, and hope to see more Afghan Whigs on this list.
Interesting Grunge(ish?) album from a band ive never heard before. I liked it
It’s not often that my partner as I are in complete disagreement about an album. We may not always align, but we’re usually close enough. Today, when listening to this, she asked what “that horrible caterwauling was”. I was bewildered, as I was really enjoying the music. It is that perfect level of 90’s moodiness, with a rough-around-the-edges sort of feel, and I think that’s pretty rad. I hadn’t heard of the Afghan Whigs before today, but I’m glad I have now.
Really like this it has a nice flow. I like his voice and it's rock but not over done with unnecessary solos. Nice riffs and tight. I will listen to more by them
Gentlemen was a great album. I always do enjoy a good alt rock album as it is one of my favorite genres due to having an easy to get into, hard to get off of kind of sound i always enjoy. This album definitely has that sound to a T. The musicianship may be a bit awkward at points but for the most part it is very great with the guitars being the main star of the show here. I have heard not great things about the singers voice but while it does take some getting used to, he does have a pretty good voice. The lyrics are probably the weakest part about this album as they could be pretty dumb but still tolerable. I still really liked this album quite a lot mostly for the musicianship. Best Song: Debonair Worst Song: When We Two Parted
A band I felt I should have listened to back in the day but never got around too. Really like this. Great drumming and hypnotic guitars.
Surprisingly good.
Music from the 90s it’s good
Surprisingly really liked this dark, grungy, but symphonic album. Excellent instrumentals and while the vocals certainly have that grungy edge to them, for me it wasn’t unbearable or unpleasant.
Nice lyrics and themes, cool riffs and some catchy moments. A little bit dated in sound. Liked going back to it a few times.
Hät öppis vo U2 - eifach in besser...Ok, es isch nüd alles guet. Mich erinnerets ächli a Stoner-Rock i de Aafäng. Brother Woodrow isch wie Dozer in soft.
Jäkligt najs sound, och när dom peakar så äre fan 5/5
This was pretty good
Missed out on this when it came out, need to relisten to this.
This is why I started doing this list. Finally someone i never heard before that is worth the time to listen.
The Istan Twigs better watch out
Loved this! I hadn't heard this band's work before, but it was basically right in my wheelhouse.
Instrumentally this was really good, some tracks having a real dark ambience. But thst vocalist is horrendous. I’d have probably gone 5 otherwise.
прик.
Okay, this is some good stuff. A very self-aware sort of arrogance to it, kind of dour in a way that works great. I think the vocals are not my favorite thing and there's nothing groundbreaking here, but I liked this a lot.
This sounds like a parallel universe record where Trent Reznor sings early 90’s alt-rock as Nine Inch Nails, rather than the decade defining jndustrial electronic music they are known for. Songs often start with interesting flourishes but then the vocal melody marches on earnestly to nowhere. My Curse shook things up by being a solidly written song with powerful lead female vocals. Overall, not bad at all, also not quite earth shattering. With multiple listens, it has the potential to grow hard on me. For that reason, I’ll give it a 4. Other highlights include Gentlemen, Debonair, Fountain and Fairfax, and Be Sweet.
Really great stuff! Completely thrown by how much I enjoyed it
They did an excellent job of putting the feelings of a break-up to music. It evokes those feelings both sonically and lyrically, which doesn’t make it easy to listen to.
Du rock «fiable», voix et guitares typiquement des années 1990, un bon moment
If I had heard this in 1993 I would have eaten this the fuck up. I'm not sure how I missed them. They were popular enough that I'm familiar with their name, but for some reason never got familiar with their material. This was a superb listen. Still enjoy this sound, man, I love dirty alt rock. Not quite a fiver for me. 9.7/10 ★★★★½
I can't believe I have overlooked this band my entire life. I'm pretty sure I recall it being recommended based on my music taste before but I just never bothered to listen. This hits right where I like my early 90s grunge to be. I preferred the first half of the album over the second but I was really pleasantly surprised by this artist. Rating: 4
A good one; strong songwriting, decent singing, powerful emotional core.
Found it in very good 4/5 will relisten
Greg Dulli has a really excellent grasp of classic R&B with an emphasis on the R. A really great album of R&B that reminds at times of the stones. Songs are strong and punchy, but the production is a little muddy which lends to the down and dirty vibe. I can't think of another band in the indie/alternative scene that sounds quite like this except maybe Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. 4 stars
I liked it
Quite enjoyed this, never heard of them before... decent indie grunge
A lovely godfather to grunge effort.
Big perla sarà che era una giornata tostang Forse a tratti non mi è piaciuto il cantante ma nel complesso bella scoperta
I want to give this album a 5 but the first half is better than the second. If it kept the energy it had for the first half it would be a 5. Otherwise a great album
Not mind-blowing, but a consistently good shoegaze-style album that was a very nice experience to listen to!
wow this was a lot sadder than i was expecting it to be
This is a band I’ve always been interested in as they’ve been a big influence on some of my favorites (The National for example), but this is the first Afghan Whigs album I recall listening to. Really great sound and the kind of album that rewards multiple listens. Good, raw lyrics like in Be Sweet. This makes me want to deep dive into their catalog.
Afghan Whigs are really good.
I got a dick for a brain
I have a weird blind spot when it comes to The Afghan Whigs. They weren’t really on my radar in the ‘90s and I discovered them later through Greg Dulli’s work with Mark Lanegan. I own Congregation and several Twilight Singers albums but rarely listen to them. I’ve seen Dulli and Lanegan live as The Gutter Twins and love the album. And I really like this. I’ve probably heard it before. I should probably listen more frequently.
4.2 4x Bill Harris introduced me to this album in mid 20s. good stuff
24/12/24 I have never heard of this band and I like what they offer.
Hell yeah
Much enjoy. Subtle grungyness, but with some panache and some super enjoyable softer elements, that draw the listener in to the emotions. Wish I would've met this album much earlier than I have.
Nice
Thought this was decent.
I was about 5 years too young for this at the time, which is a shame. 90s US alt-rock, from a point in time where the UK was just about to fall out of love with American artists for a while.
I became a fan this year (2024) when I saw them play as a dual headliner with The Church. This album exemplifies why I liked them live.
Quite good.
This is a long time staple in my listening. As a result it is hard to be fair when ranking. Having said that my best shot at fair would be a four out of five.
Pretty good, had a sufficiently unique sound to hold my attention.
Great 90s alt grunge rock
I thought this band would have had something to do with smashing pumpkins but apparently there is no connection. I've even thought for the longest time that debonair was a pumpkins song
4/5
Matched my mood and vibe today. I loved it!
Breakup themed. This was surprisingly interesting music.
Really on the fence about 3 vs 4 stars. Songwriting and musicianship are definitely 4, but the singing is a bit grating at times. A band worth further exploration into their catalog, though.
- Considering how often I have listened to this over the last week, I should probably give it top marks. - Never heard of the Afghan Wings (besides maybe an occasional mention). Very entranced with the overall sound; not quite as hard-hitting as some other bands of the period, but still highly engaging. - Adore "Be Sweet." Also find "My Curse" to be solid, though I do not know ow the singer. - The biggest hang-up I have is the lead vocals. Usually pretty strong, but not strong enough to truly set this band apart.
Solid rock album. I hadn't really listened to them before but I'll throw this on sometimes.
The Afghan Whigs are cool and have been cool for a long time. They've got such a unique sound and style to them. They are definite genre-benders. I dug this album. I had only heard their later stuff prior to this but then spent most of the day listening to their 90's catalog.
Not a huge fan of the vocals, but I really liked the rest of the band’s sound.
Grata sorpresa, no es el mejor disco del estilo pero está molongui
3.5
what a build up, just 30 minutes of pure fury to then uncover what’s behind. On my first listen I thought it was immaturity but once you listen to it once more you realise it’s just deciet.
4.3 - I'm not sure how sold I am on the voice, but I think it was really authentic. Musically I loved the tone of this, right up my street. I think will revisit.
This was quite stressful in a good way. Fave Track: Gentlemen 3.5/5
Listened to these years ago and sort of forgot about them.
Enjoyed it
This one is really up my alley, a solid 4. Reminded me of a lot of other artists i like
This was a pleasant discovery of good old-fashioned rock in the exact tense I enjoy listening to. Maybe it's a bit generic, but who cares? I'll forget it next mont, so I don't care at all, it was a nice session.
90s era rock is such a nostalgic sound for me. I've listened to Afghan Whigs casually but I don't think I've ever sat down and played an album straight through. I really dug it. The soulful elements really add a unique dimension.
Intense music with dark themes, great songwriting and instantly recognizable vocals.
Really good sound even if there isn't a standout song
This was pretty cool. Another pleasant surprise I'd never heard of. I really like their style of angular, post punk instrumentation and playing. It's pretty similar to how I play guitar. I wasnt wild about the vocals most of the time, but the guitar/overall feeling won out. It's more of a 3.7, but I rounded up. Album cover: B+/A-. Super 90s
kinda dark-ish punk rock with a mild pop sound. if there's one thing that sticks out compared to all the others i've heard it's the guitar riffs, probably the nicest sounding i've ever heard in my life. i don't care as much for the slower tracks as usual... while not every song hits for me, it's a well-crafted, almost classy punk pop album. if you like maroon 5 and/or grateful dead, it's a good pick for you. once again, wish i had more to say...
Having somehow never heard of the album or the band, I really enjoyed this but didn’t have a chance to listen all the way through due to attending the Glasgow 2024 WorldCon. From what I’ve heard it’s a 3.5 which could become a 4 on relistening so I’ve rounded up this time.
This was a bit more my speed, enjoyable grungey indie.
7/10. It isn't anything particularly remarkable, nor does it really belong on a list of 1001 must-listen albums, but I like its style. :)
Quite enjoyed this
Liked this a lot more than I thought I would. If I ever go through a breakup again I’ll have to add this to the circulation.
I had never heard of the Afgan Whigs before. I liked the music. I will definitely listen to the album again, even if it won't be one of my favorites. 4/5
Certainly something intersting going on here and worth further exploration. Passionate, vulnerable, honest. Faves: What Jail Is Like, Brother Woodrom
Hmmmm, these guys feel like two familiar bands mushed together, but I can't for the life of me pin down which two bands - it's on the tip of my brain. A bit of Trail of Dead, maybe? I feel like there's a slowcore influence in the mix. 🤔 I gotta say, some of the lyrics are just feckin awful - this definitely won't be getting a 5 no matter how much I dig the music. "Be Sweet", for example - great music, but _horrible_ lyrics. Annoying! This coulda been one of my top discoveries from the list with a different songwriter at the helm... Fave tracks - "Debonair", "Brother Woodrow / Closing Prayer"
Very suspect lyrics but still bangs
Never heard of them before, so that makes the review more interesting. Opening music and vocals - very interesting Gentlemen - great drums, technique, guitars and vocals. Loved it 😎 Fountain and the Fairfax - another great track 😉 ... excellent album from a talented band. It sounds brilliantly "unique". Worth 4 stars
Severa very good, subtle and slow-burning cuts, but not a ton of the hookiness or anthemic-ness that would have made them obvious candidates for mass appaeal in the days of grunge and very early ALT rock. Best cuts are "Be Sweet," "What Jail is Like," "When We Two Parted," and the closer, which achieves a kind of gritty transcendence – one's always been a sucker the brooding, instrumental aspect of hard rock. Safe to say they deserve more and are well worth knowing beyond just this one record.
Never heard of these guys before, is this EMO? I LIKE this moody sound a LOT, nothing I don't like about this so far. 3 stars. ANOTHER RAD BAND FROM OHIO, make that 4 STARS
sick tunes 4.2/5
Some bangers for the zen playlist oh yeah oh yeah
I enjoyed it.
Good rock album.
enjoyed this! it was quite a fun listen, feel like I was engaged and didn't wanna skip anything which is more than I can say for most albums. I dont know that id listen to any of these songs often but as an overall album pretty damn good. 8/10
Really enjoyed this! My Curse was especially good. This isn’t the kind of music I usually listen to but it was excellent background as I read The Four Loves. 8/10
Enjoyed, 4/5
I enjoyed this. Will probably revisit again at some point. Was not at all what I was expecting
Kinda good for the 90s grunge music. Would like to revisit this again in the future.
Hell yes.
Grungey goodness.
Very impactful, emotional, etc. But drags on a bit and feels the same thing the whole time: either moody, slow, and loud or moody, slow, and quiet.
Enjoyed this one a bit, there is a pained and soulful yearning to it. Favorite track: "Fountain and Fairfax."
This was pretty solid
I appreciate many of the reviewers reacting with disgust to the notes of misogyny that perfume this record; it gives me a bit of hope for society, I guess. So maybe I'm a bad feminist for giving the benefit of the doubt here. Albums written from a place of pain, or a desire to explore toxic relationships, doesn't mean they're strictly autobiographical. So yeah, these lyrics are hyper-masculine and not always empathetic to the woman on the receiving end, but there are moments of (what appears to be) regret and desire for understanding. "Tonight I go to hell/for what I've done to you." Then we hear a woman's voice on "My Curse," like getting the other side of the story, which is the real saving grace on this record for me. As for the rest of the album, the sound and production reminds me of the 2010s emo revival, particularly in the Midwest. It's a nostalgic sound for me; I could've bumped this at 16 alongside bands like Title Fight or Joyce Manor. But many of these songs are paced the same, and the lead singer oscillates between sounding urgent and sounding strained. I'm curious about revisiting and spending more time with this record. Maybe it's just been awhile since my last bad breakup. Highlights: Be Sweet, Debonair, Fountain and Fairfax, What Jail Is Like, My Curse
This is surprising compelling. The pain and torment is clear with music that matches it well. Alt rock vibe that gets appropriately noisy when it needs. Really enjoyed it and plan to explore it more soon.
I liked it, it was chill and a nice thing to have on while doing something else.
Will be adding this one to the rotation pretty instantly. 4/5
This is my first time listening to this. Never had much exposure to this band back in the 90s. To be fair, I listened to it twice. I really enjoyed it the second time around and think it is deserving of the acclaim. It takes you on an emotional journey with some dark undertones and a Velvet Underground feel.
Really good stuff
Heavy, slightly dark, very nice
Atmospheric link between the beautiful melodic of the 80s and the angsty poetic of the 90s
It starts with noise. That threw me off and I like. The song gentlemen has a great groove. Really digging this record. Great grooves. Great song writing
Despite being a fan of later album 1965, I'd never really dived into the Afgham Whigs catalogue so I was excited to give Gentlemen a whirl. There's something honest in the way the band go about their business - a standard four piece with piano/organ adding some depth and minimal production tweaks; you imagine the band might sound like this live. Honest, too, in the confessional song writing of Dulli, somewhat tormented and driven by libido, struggling to maintain relationships - I'm not sure I would want to hang out with him. A decent record, from a decent band making interesting music.
lots of catchy riffs that made this v enjoyable. excited to re-listen at somepoint.
Honestly, I really really liked it
I didn't get to give this album as much focus as I would have liked, but I really enjoyed it when I was listening. I love the style of the guitar. I love the vocals, the messiness of it all I think this could be something that grows on me
New music that I liked!
A progressive grungy alternative record strait from the pit of toxic relationship despair. The Afghan Whigs use heavy breakdowns, punchy picked bass, screaming fuzzed-out guitars, gritty and grinding organs, and unpolished angsty vocals to paint the very image of a broken romance. Topics swing wildly from regretful musing of hurt, defiant pushes against entrenched relationships, and confused confessions of romantic addiction. In the end, it feels like we started exactly where we began. This was my first introduction to the Afghan Whigs, and I really liked what I heard. Stand out tracks include: When We Two Parted, What Jail Is Like, My Curse, and I Keep Coming Back.
Really cool and some great songs. Intrigued by this band
a little too grungy for my tastes, but still a great album - 8/10
Davhteberst das is nix für mich aber war tatsächlich gut
Yeah, loved it - such a great sound and Dulli is a fantastic vocalist. listened to a few of their other albums back in the day (had 1965 on tape!) but never this one
More than 4, great!
way better than i expected, i enjoyed a decent amount of this. 3.7-3.8
Al lijken een paar nummers goed op elkaar, toch heb ik van dit album genoten
I really enjoyed this but I'm not sure why. I didn't like any of the songs but I really enjoyed this. Really enjoyed this, for some reason 🤷♀️
Dripping with drama, angst, and a fucking unrelenting rhythm section, this album really doesn’t let up. Dulli’s distinct vocal style really resonates here in a way that virtually no other artists in the 80s-90s were capturing. There are a lot of great tracks on their own, but I think the record works better as a whole, slow burn piece. The miserable cycle of a break up digs a bit deeper as you get more into the album. The more you sit it in, the more it sits in you.
Never really dove into the Afghan Whigs discography, so this is my first foray into really listening to their music. This album started off very strong and then the last 3-4 songs became a bit of a drone and were too lengthy for me. Overall, I enjoyed this album and would listen to it again. It deserves a place on this list, if only because it's an album that serves as a midpoint between grunge and post-alternative music. It does have a timeless sound.
Musicality: 4 - decent melodies, solid layering Production & Sound: 5 - sounds very good Artistic Expression: 4 - emotional, angry Performance: 4 - all very good, vocalist does well Engagement & Enjoyment: 4 - some songs I enjoyed a lot, kept me listening Decent album overall
I love the Afghan Whigs and I really liked re-listening to this album. This album kind of shows the group figuring out the right mix of ingredients for their sound, which I think gets better and better with each release. If you listen to this and "1965"--which is chock full of hits--you will be very confused why they didn't have a bunch of number 1 hit singles and make it into the big time.
I’ve never heard of this group and was skeptical at first but this won me over by the end. Good lyrics and not too soft. When We Two Parted was the first track to make me perk up. Dug the strings in Fountain and Fairfax. My Curse was my favorite - excellent song. There is something almost post-emo about this even though it came out in the 90s and that makes no sense.
I know they aren't a Seattle band, but this album definitely had some of the grungy feel of the time. Rocks hard with biting lyrics. Kind of surprising this band never really broke into the big time.
