Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Not my speed, but definitely evokes the exact era it's from, which is kind of endearing. I don't necessarily want to listen to a full album of these vocals.

= The Beatles

Grossartig-Durchschnittliche Akustik-Gitarre-Rock wo absolut unspektakulär isch aber au gar ned schlimm oder nervig. müssti eigentlich mini gwohnti bewertigs-härti wiiter durezieh da ich keis Lied vo ihne gspeicheret han aber will sii so unglaublich average und ned störend sind gits hald 3 mal dur d Perrücke streichle

glaub scho no guet gsi oder? chönts der to be honest gad wüki nöd säge will die hend d‘segel wieder uf vollmast gha und sind backbord ah mir verbigseglet gwüssi fätze hani no im chopf und sie sind grössteteils gnüssbar gsi, bi andere hani ufzmal en schreiendi stimm im ohr gha das schreit nach eme klassische 3er

This is some poignant stuff. It captures the disintegration of a relationship at a moment that I've gotta think is a universal experience: where there's still enough passion left to spark bitter, hateful arguments but where both parties already long since have crossed the rubicon and left no more space for true reconciliation. That's a bitter place to be and the tortured guitars, solemn drums and poetic lyrics portray it all beautifully. Despite being perfectly functional for this concept, I don't think a huge amount of the vocals here. Against the frantic subject matter this style of singing gets too close to scattered rambling for me, which I'm sure was part of the plan but doesn't make for great listening. Still, it's a very well realized album that captures a truth about modern relationships in a highly creative way. High 3.

This is fine. Reviews online promised a lot more from this band than the album actually delivers.

Regular, todas las canciones son prácticamente las mismas

It was fine, I like 90s rock so its not bad but just bland

I really resonated with the emotion and lyrics of this album, and really liked When We Two Parted, but overall wasn’t my favorite musical style.

was alright pretty weird lyricism wouldn’t listen to again i don’t think. 6.5/10

It was OK

Not really my thing, but Debonair slaps!

Cava album. Ik weet niet of er zo veel meer op staat dan Gentlemen en Debonair waarvan ik zeg: "jua, dat vliegt nu eens in mijn playlist". 2.5

Not bad

Growing up in Cincinnati, one hears about The Afghan Whigs. I’m actually from the lead singer’s hometown, although I just found this out via Wikipedia. There isn’t a plaque or anything. People in Hamilton, outside of the guitar store, have no clue this band exists. And, I think that tracks, because even though, as I said, Cincinnati cares, few in Cincy actually listen to or discuss The Afghan Whigs. All the years I lived there, you’d hear there was this moderately famous band in the nineties, and after that, The Heartless Bastards, and then unless you count 98 Degrees or the band Why?, nobody. So, people respect that someone from our little city succeeded in some capacity, but there aren’t like Afghan Whig parties. The music isn’t celebrated. Listening now, I understand why that is. I don’t mean Gentlemen is bad or anything. The instrumentation is great. The music’s just kinda meh. It lacks dancability and sing-alongability. Anger glazes over and there are some head bang rock out moments, but otherwise, angst. I did have a friend record at the home studio of one of the Whigs, which sounds like a cool time. And, giving AW my first listen, I can certainly hear a strand of influence to the future (current) Cincinnati sound. Those minor scale bass lines driving you deeper into misery, that r&b/rock crossover, that self loathing lyrical strain, that’s all still there. So, it’s interesting to finally stop by an AW album. Not quite my thing, but cool to pay reverence to a local ‘somewhat’ hero.

Something very artistic of Afghan wigs. Raw talent. I remember when gentleman came out and I remember being floored.

Tough to rate. I liked the start, but by the end I had enough. An interesting album nonetheless and glad the generator put it in.

Some good sounds on this album. Good musicianship, but not sure I'd listen much.

I forgot about these guys. They’re pretty good. A little bit too much woe is me.

Surprisingly good

Nice enough but not noteworthy 3 *

Groupe inconnu. When We Two Parted' -, 'My Curse' -, 'I Keep Coming Back' --). Le reste est moins remarquable mais bien exécuté. Bonne découverte donc, que j'écouterais probablement de nouveau, mais qui ne rejoindra pas ma collection. =>3/5

if I were going funny ahfang ES BREAKUP ALBUM gentlemen findi echt na cools riff jaa es kauft chli und ich muss sege ich finds na cool aber au nöd meh, es gaht chli ah mier verbii ok when we two parted hani jz aktiv nervig gfunde hahahaha schöni stricher my curse wird au progressiv nerviger hahaha jaa vill hani nöd dezue z sege, han scho es paar sache na cool gfunde, aber villes au eifach ok oder nervig

Liked it, but won’t go out of my way to listen again

Dense. Oppressive. Agitated. Dark, bleak howls, with the vocals hiding behind massive guitars.

Grungiger soul

Trevligt!

Good not great. Did enjoy it, though.

Some interesting ideas, but nothing that sets the album out

Gentlemen is the fourth studio album from the Afghan Whigs, an alt-rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio. The band made guitar driven, post-punk grunge. Gentlemen is the band's most commercially successful album, and is generally regarded as the band's best recorded work. The album includes two of the Afghan Whig's biggest singles, the title track and "Debonair." These songs seem typical of early 90s rock, effect heavy guitars and vocals in the era of U2 and Pearl Jam. These songs are catchy, but not particularly memorable.

My favorite part was when the lady sang, but sadly I learned she’s not a real member of the band. Anyway, the rest of it wasn’t so bad.

Ok. Nothing stood out, sought of washed over me, will give a second listen sometime sort of generalist rock leaning Indy.

I missed thos group. Knew it existed but couldnt remember anythingz They rock surprisingly good

Ça va mais pas de banger (c'est dommage Spotify m'a reco un de leur son juste après et il était super)

If ChatGPT made a rock album

I'm a big fan of this "depressed guitar distortion" sound. It reminds me of better times. The song Gentlemen has just the perfect blend of distortion and tasteful precision. Lots of silence is used to separate riffs and sub-riffs, and the bass undercuts the guitar exactly. (In fact, the bass might actually be better than the lead, at least in this particular song.) The singing is definitely above average here too, and the drums are energetic and complex. Debonair is another standout for essentially the same reasons. The texture is thick but not too thick. It's very appealing. Fountain and Fairfax, at the very heart of the album, is another contender, this time specifically for its guitar line and underlying bass drone notes. None of the other songs particularly stand out, and some (like My Curse) come dangerously close to boring the listener. And I don’t really count this as part of the “up-and-down” rollercoaster that’s essential for any great album. A low-energy track still has to be consistently engaging – and fortunately, all of the songs here manage to do that, if barely. As is the modus operandi for nearly all forms of punk or alt-rock music, the vocals are kind of bad. The singer sounds the best when he's doing a rock-esque scream (e.g. in Gentlemen), but even then it sounds like a mildly discount Robert Plant or Axl Rose. The lyrics, or at least those few I paid attention to, are pretty clumsy. Literacy clearly isn't one of the Afghan Whigs' strengths. "It's all a lie / It's nearly dead / It's in our hope baby / It's in our bed" "I got a dick for a brain / And my brain is gonna sell my ass to you" "I'm really slobbering now / Let it stink / Let it dry up / Is it impossible? / How?" 3/5 Key tracks: Gentlemen, Debonair, Fountain and Fairfax

Greg Dulli wants to be your dark prince of soul-noir, and on Gentlemen, Afghan Whigs’ major-label debut, he nearly pulls it off—if you don’t mind a little sleaze with your swagger. Imagine Pretty Hate Machine-era Nine Inch Nails trading synths for snarling guitars and a bottle of bourbon: the mood is just as bleak, but the sound is more sweat-soaked and analog. The title track opens with a slinky drum pattern that sets the tone, while “Debonair” struts with taut basslines, and “Now You Know” brings muscular drumming and a catchy guitar jangle. Dulli leans into raw emotion, often sounding like he’s exorcising demons in real time. “Be Sweet” shocks with its problematic lyrical gut-punch, while “What Jail Is Like” swaps guitars for piano, giving things a moody elegance. “My Curse” offers a rare moment of vulnerability with female lead vocals, and closer “Brother Woodrow” trails off with a shadowy instrumental fade. Gentlemen is a bruised, soul-infused slugfest—equal parts seduction, confession, and self-destruction.

I was entertained. Conversely, I was not transformed.

Lyrics are a bit cringe but was a good enough listen. Be sweet was standout track for me. Album cover i found a bit creepy

Great music. Weird vocals.

There is some minorly interesting music. The singer sounded sounded familiar, like a glam rock band Faster Pussycat or L.A. Guns maybe, raspy and sleazy like that. I get a creepy vibe - I can never love music that sounds like that.

not bad!!! David Galea recommended their older album which I also preferred

It was alright. Not much else to report. Lyrics are a bit... childish? Odd? Probably won't listen again but it was okay.

Overall: 6/10 There's some really good songs on this album but most of the lyrics make me cringe. It's not often that I'm listening to music and have to replay a section of a song just to make sure they actually said what I imagined. It's a shame too cause I love the instrumentals of pretty much every track. The guitar work is especially good on songs like My Curse (with a great female vocalist) and Debonair. I'm sure I'll come back to a few of these songs but overall it's not something that I want to infect my brain with on a regular basis. Fav Song: My Curse Least Fav Song: Be Sweet

Started out hot with some classic 90s rock rizz guitars but cooled off and was kinda cringe thirst incel lyrics

A very 90s album, though I wouldn’t really call it grunge; closer to something like Fugazi. A bit repetitive (and maybe bordering on misogynistic) but the music is pretty good. Best song: Debonair

I liked this album listen! It was a solid alt rock album with some grunge elements. I’d never heard of this album or artist before this so it was interesting to listen to something new. I can see why other people would like this album but I don’t think it was for me personally. I didn’t particularly like the lead singer’s voice and how he was slightly under pitch or struggling to find the pitch at times but maybe that’s a stylistic choice. Either way I’m not sure if I would listen to this album again but I would recommend it to other alt rock fans!

I go back and forth on loving and disliking this album. At times its raw, emotional and beautiful in a rock n' roll way. But then it is just too much being a jerk and full of his emotional toils but not deciding to focus on change. There are some solid garage style rock points.

I like the guitar work. Especially like them when they are rocking out with some funky complex riffs like Gentlemen, Debonair, Fountain & Fairfax, Now You Know. I don't mind his screamy vocals. It's a bit much on Fountain & Fairfax but sounds like he is going through some shit. Which brings me to the lyrics. As much as I like the music on some of the songs, the poetry of the lyrics doesn't really connect with me (with what I can actually understand). Too much emo drama shit for me. Be Sweet is a therapy session inside his head that I didn't need but thanks for letting your dick brain hang out there for everybody. He tones the screamy down a bit on What Jail is Like and actually sings. That's a pretty good song. The slow songs drag & aren't that interesting to me. Brother Woodrow... wow. so much violin you can swim in it (or choke on it).

I liked this. It’s super raw in its exploration of toxic relationships, and shows the darker side of certain dudes’ brains (not all of them of course)! It’s seeing a bad relationship from the “gentleman’s” perspective, who seems to be self-aware of how destructive and shitty he is, and he continues to be that way anyway. A well executed concept! Favorite song was the one NOT sung by the guy though, My Curse. That song rocked!

It's fine? Like it's all grungy or whatever. The 90's are to Gen X as the 60's are to the boomers. 6/10

This album makes me feel like I’m listening to Spotify on shuffle outside of my “liked songs”. I found myself wanting to hit skip a few times. It’s weird because the music isn’t that bad. It may be the unfortunate instance where I just don’t feel like listening to this. Or I’m not engaged in the offering. I’m trying though. This is like Dinosaur Jr. That’s what I’m thinking at this point. Ya, it’s just the same thing over and over again. Mid level intensity. Decent music. The vocals aren’t terrible . There really isn’t anything to make me turn away from the album but there also isn’t anything to keep me listening. It’s mid but not terrible.

I’m not quite sure why this album gets lionised. It’s not bad. It’s good: even very good. I might suggest maybe excellent. But not great. 3 stars.

Classic 90s rock.

Need to listen to more of them.

It's funny--I always associated The Afghan Whigs with the whole British alternative/alt-rock scene, but I don't think I ever (actively) listened to them, and I doubt much of their stuff made it to the radio, so this was a totally uninformed conjecture. And although it's not totally off-base, the fact that they were an American band highlights how little I really knew (I'm guessing that "Whigs" was part of what threw me off in a continental sense). Overall, it seems like a fine sample of the 90s alt-rock genre, and I enjoyed it that I'd never heard any of the songs before, but I'll admit I'm unlikely to revisit the album. The only songs that kind of stood out for me were "Debonair", "Fountain and Fairfax" and "Now you know" (largely because they all had better guitar hooks than other tracks); "My curse" is also an interesting change of pace. (I had high hopes for their cover of "I keep coming back", but was kind of disappointed.) I do wish the album's mix could have been a little better, though, as I would never have guessed that this was a breakup album without reading about it, as I found most of the lyrics largely indecipherable. And hilarious that Linda Ronstadt (on the same label when this album was released) thought the album cover was all but child porn. Also, kind of cool that Steve Earle ("Copperhead Road") was a member of the band when the album was produced.

Enjoyed this for the most part (I found the last track a little grating) but I doubt I'll ever listen again--sorry, Whiggies.

If Trent Reznor and Bob Dylan sang vocals for Radiohead, you would get the afghan whigs.

Starts off great, dips towards the end. 3.5 stars

Вроде и прикольно, а вроде и нет спорно

Musically started off ok but tailed off. Sound of the songs better than the singing and the lyrics.

A 90s alternative rock band that had passed me by. Similar to Buffalo Tom, but nowhere near as good, with hints of other bands from that time. I like some of it, and if the songs had melodies it would be great, but it’s a no from me. So many better bands from this era to choose from.

I liked it at the beginning but it got a little tedious by the end.

I should like this album but for some reason I’m just ok with it. Doesn’t grab me.

The Afghan Wings do good stuff and have their place in music history. I didn't find this album very memorable though.

This was a weird middling listen Liked the 90s sound aesthetic. Parts reminded me of RHCP (bass lines), some REM, and a bit of seaweed. Album was a bit all over the place, almost like as if a drunk, depressed man couldn’t figure out what kind of music he wanted to mope to, so listened to all different kinds. Intriguing enough to merit a deeper look into their catologue.

Cool band name. I didn't love it but I did enjoy it and would listen again. 3.25/5

I started out liking this album but found my interest waned as it went on. It is not a bad album and the guitar work is notable, but it just didn't last for me...

Kind of mediocre, some good bits, but I grew a bit bored by the end. I'm going with 3 stars, as if it weren't for all the other bands who did this better, then I guess I might have liked this more.

3.4 Good, but nowhere near the level of their early 90s alternative contemporaries - Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, et al. The 3 song run from Be Sweet to When we.. was the albums high point, but after that it peters out a bit and ambles around for another 30-40 minutes or so. Disappointing 2nd half to what was building up as looking promising.

I would probably have loved this if I’d heard it when it came out. I didn’t. Because I can’t find an emotional connection to it, I don’t love it now. It’s ok though.

Ca commençait pas mal du tout mais ça s'endort petit à petit et ça finit en ronronnant doucement.

kinda good but also kinda shiddy. Will I listen to again: 10%

ok rock

very dark 90s

Ein gutes Album. Gradlinig, solide und weniger grunge als befürchtet.

Another album I enjoyed but not sure I would ever revisit. Drone, noise, angst; high school me may have stanned for it.

I did not enjoy it all that much. It felt kind of boring. I see the appeal for listening to in a playlist, but not so much on its own. I liked Fountain and Fairfax more than the rest of the album. The album definitely comes off as angsty and post-heartbreak. The instrumentals themselves are pretty good.

[7/10]

It was different and I respect that, but it's not my scene

If you told me this was early to mid 90s I’d believe you. Oh, wait. I misread as 1983 and was going to say this sounds ahead of its time. Alright I guess.

Decent background music and a guy with a slightly annoying voice. Very 90s and reminded me a few other bands that I cannot name of the top of head. 5/10

Lyrics and vocalist are awful, including the female. Doesn’t match the music at all. Shame because I like it otherwise, but I think there are other bands out there that are better overall. I have to give 3 because I like the drums and the backing, but ideally it would be 2.5.

Nice album but nothing crazy tbh

Not my favorite but I was completely unaware of The Afghan Whigs and that’s a problem that’s now resolved. Tight band. I like the active percussion parts. Singer is not my favorite throughout but there are great moments

Wow. Melancholy and bitter, this is an amazing breakup album, I could’ve used this at points in my life haha.

I had a decent time with this album. There's a lot of really good fundamentals in the instrumentals on here but there's an amateurish quality. It feels like the emotions spill into the sound and gives it a garage band raw kind of feeling. The songs weren't very memorable but I appreciate this American style over the UK detached style that is very present on this list. I think these guys were making music true to them and that's pretty cool even if the final product doesn't hold up to their influences.

Musically this is somewhere between the 90's and the mid-2000's, which is pretty impressive for an album written in 1993. It's different enough from grunge that it's unique but not so far removed that it misses that aggression, deliberate sloppiness, and volume that makes grunge so great. Lyrically this was written by a teenage boy, very fitting for the time and I imagine the demographic they were involved in. The less aggressive songs ("When We Two Parted") remind me so much of another band. This is going to sound insane but they sound like the less angry and male fronted version of Hole on these songs. The singer's vocal style is a lot like Courtney Love's - for better or worse. I didn't mind this, but it didn't really grab me in a particular way. I think it was ahead of it's time for sure, but not in the way that it's visionary, because what came after it in the future that was/is similar to it isn't so great that I consider it invaluable. Not a bad listen, not a great one.

It’s OK.

First time hearing about these guys. It's an alright album.

A great grungy album that I had a real pleasure to listen to, but one day later, I already forgot everything. Well, next!

I'd have been into this if I heard it at the time, might come back to it

This is a tense sound, doesn't necessarily pay of all the time though.

Didn't know this at all before. I generally quite liked it. Had some nice guitar parts. Was a bit samey throughout but not bad.

Honestly, it had some good parts but they were unfortunately overcast by dogshit parts like the unvaried music and ass vocals. Overall okay though.

I somehow forgot to give this one a rating, but for me it’s a 3. Disturbing album cover, though.

Rock. Ok first time ever listening, will be last

This was fine. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5

This was ok though Brother Woodward was really good!

There’s some really good stuff on here and then there’s some really not good stuff, very mixed bag

I liked the instrumentation a lot more than I usually do with grunge. The vocals do turn me off of it but I didn't notice them that much the first half of the record. I still like the first few songs but didn't like any of the rest enough to return to. Rating: 3.4

the guy's voice is a lot. second half-ish of the album was more interesting. thought the album cover was a laugh at first (see: nan and brian in bed), but it provides context for one of the album's themes: just kids dealing with some grown-ass business.

6/10 Highlights: Brother Woodrow Debonair My Curse

Rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.

I'll give it a 2.5- it is grunge but in the way Jeff Buckley's Grace is grunge. Will listen again

Mostly good. A few eh songs. 3.5

Started off great, second half was meh. 3.5

ive heard time and time again that the album list has a strong british bias so when i saw that this unknown, british-sounding band was actually american i kinda got goosebumps other than that its cool

Fart music for loud bois

I didn’t really like this on the first listen. I gave it a couple of days and now I like it more. Particularly the bass is really cool on a lot of the songs.

As a concept the album works. The lyrics are ugly in places, but then so are breakup in toxic relationships.

I remembered and still like the title song: Gentlemen. Pretty good beat/energy there. I also kind of like Debonair (which interestingly has even more plays). But the rest of the album is kind of "meh".

alternative to a fault. I know it seems a bit of an oxymoron to call something like alternative rock as generic, but thats the best I got. not for me, but probably for someone.

That was definitely some alt rock!

Gentlemen Debonair My Curse

I was expecting/hoping to dig this a bit more on relisten, but I’m still not fully into this one. I dig the overall sound and ~vibe~ (I hate using that word), but the melodies/songs themselves leave a bit to be desired. I definitely don’t think this is on the same level as a lot of their 1993 “alternative rock” contemporaries, but I’ll remain optimistic that it will grow on me yet. 3.5/5

There were definitely some things to like about this album, the final instrumental track in particular. I feel as though if I spent more time with it I might actually like it more. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much to make me want to hit “play” again just yet.

It was okay.

I enjoyed this one. I've never heard any of their stuff and really the only time I've heard the name was recently bc Patrick Keeler is currently playing with Jack White. There were a couple tracks here I would probably skip the second time around but certainly saved a couple. When We Two Parted stuck out to me (pattern developing of me favoring any slow emo song) good soup

I think I need to listen a few more times, but I am not writing it off...generally enjoyed it, especially the amount of instrumental-ish sections where the vocals aren't in your face.

I can imagine there’s a girl who’s 18 in 1993 and she’s checking out a show at a basement bar off-campus that serves up both vegan sandwiches and punk rock and this band is playing. She hits it off with a guy wearing a wallet chain and a hoodie under a jean jacket covered in Black Flag patches and they date for like 5 minutes. He’s 24 and lives way off campus and thinks Eddie Vedder can suck it. His room is painted jet black and he smokes unfiltered Marlboro reds in bed and drinks coffee all day and all night when he’s not drinking PBR tall boys. He’s aloof, slightly alcoholic and doesn’t return calls and he’s all she can think about. He ghosts her. She goes to the record store and gets this CD so she can wallow in her heartbreak. She listens to “I keep coming back” on repeat until the CD starts to skip. She walks around in a state of depression with “Brother Woodrow” playing through her walkman headphones. This album will get her through that painful first breakup. Sadly this wasn’t my first breakup album, but it should’ve been. If only I’d been born earlier I could see where this would’ve seeped into my psyche. I can also see how it can feel anachronistic to listen to it in 2024 when the angst-ridden patina of the 90’s seemed to wear off long ago. I still happen to love the jangly guitars, off-key vocals and weird indie cult mythology of this era so I'll likely listen again when I want to reminisce about my old love -- the 90s.

Really enjoyed this initially, but another listen may change which direction it goes in. 3.5/5

mi sembra di averne già sentiti altri mille così, sarò io che parto prevenuta? chissà. niente di offensivo nè particolarmente rivoluzionario.

Pretty good sound.

Really catchy riffs, and from the delightful vein of self-hatred that was so cool in the 90’s but now just sort of gets you therapist recommendations.

Influenced a lot of music that I like

Pretty good. Never heard before. Might give it another spin.

Some cool songs. Standout songs: Debonair Fountain and Fairfax My Curse

Decent but not spectacular. The lyrics are dumb and hurt the overall product. I'm a sucker for 90s grunge like sound so this appealed to me musically. Probably made me nostalgic for the days when I was young and immature. Those were the days.

Любовь - штука злая , и если с ней все плохо - и музыка такая же злая получается

Svårröstat. Gillar det egentligen men det känns lite som att dom vill vara så jävla svåra det bara går. Men det är gött sound osv. Lite post punk på något sätt

Passable album that started strong, but I feel never quite reached its maximum potential

This is a cross between Smashing Pumpkins and any band that played at The Bronze in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. It's OK, but it hangs around far too long.

Sounds like Smashing Pumpkins but meh

It's not bad, but probably won't seek it out again.

Enjoyed. Had energy and artistic interest.

Really liked the songs “When we two parted” and “What jail is like”. The rest was fine

Much better than I expected. Good screams and growls over odd music. Not bad.

To'd and Fro'd on this one a lot, it's either a high 3 or low 4. Debonair still sounds great all these years later, dark and funky, with a great growl along chorus. I Keep Coming Back is gorgeous and chilled, a song I never knew until Zaph Mann used it for his extra bit on his radio show/pod. Stuff I discovered I liked on this listen, When we two Parted is another in a similar chilled vibe, and Fountain and Fairfax probably the best of the rest of the rockers. What holds me back from loving it is it's a little samey in places and his wailing style does get a little testing over the course of the record. Decent, though.

A lot better than I expected. Really dug the vibe and style.

Was a 3

Good but prefer Congregation. Brings back memories. One of my favorite bands at the time.

Beautifully heartbreaking

Ok I guess. 🤔

Great rock album. Feels adjacent to Alice In Chains. Themes of abuse, manipulation, and the fallout of a romantic relationship. The vibe is spot on. Love whatever they’re doing with the instrumentals. The singer’s cadence didn’t feel quite right to me, but it did make for some unnerving moments. Album twisted the expected, kept me on my toes. Some transitions and leitmotif. Standouts: Gentlemen, Be Sweet, Debonair, When We Two Parted, Fountain and Fairfax, My Curse, and Brother Woodrow.

Allt í lagi, en grípur ekkert sérstaklega.

Fed! Ja stemmen var lidt rough, men et interessant take på 90er-grunge.

For as cool of a genre as grunge was, there was bound to be some duds. That is the case with any era of popular music. There are some that do it right and become synonymous with that time, and others who fail to capture the same buzz. I wouldn’t say that this group really falls into that last category. They definitely made some name for themself. But they are no Nirvana or Pearl Jam. Supposedly this particular record follows a toxic relationship, and its eventual end. I don’t know how anyone could ever regard this as “one of the best breakup albums ever”. Although that’s not a category of music I delve into that much, I know damn well this isn’t up there. But with that slightly more mature theming, comes music with a bit more of an edge to it. This is easily one of the more dark and gritty grunge records I’ve heard. Sometimes the guitars make them sound more like a post-hardcore band. The production style too. Except the production on this kind of sucks. I’ve heard other albums that sound similarly, but they have more going on that sort of help me move past it. As much as I like the unique approach they take, this just isn’t all that good. I’ll just put it bluntly. The lead vocalist can’t sing. Even when he sort of sounds like he’s trying to make it listenable, it’s not great. At its worst, it’s downright embarrassing. And I can’t really engage myself with the story they are attempting to tell, because of the lyrics. Not only are they not that good to begin with, but they are also incredibly juvenile and sexually charged. And in the worst way possible. Maybe I would have found this more enjoyable when I was 11-years old, but not now. When this album is at its best, I don’t think it’s doing anything more interesting than the loads of other alt-rock albums from the 90s that sound similar. Rating: 5/10

Meh generic rock of it's time, nothing special

Not bad, fairly classic early '90s sound. More Sonic Youth than Soundgarden. 3/5

Terrible name but half decent. 3.5

50/50 Вокал вроде не плохой, манера исполнения нравится, но песни не заходят

Have vaguely known this band but never listened. Think I would have liked them more in the 90's, it now sounds dated. Still interesting though, good guitar and angsty delivery.

Ok album, I’ve had a long like not love thing with Afghan Whigs. Like a lot of the melodies of the songs, the singing sometimes detracts. 3/5!

It was good! I agree with the reviews that the music is great but i am not a fan of the lead singer's voice at all. The one song with a female singer is the best lol

Good drums and guitar riffs.

Not too bad but the lyrics are a bit Edgelord.

This album contains cool 90s rock music themed around a breakup. I found the songs to be rather enjoyable.

I didn’t know what to put. I was torn whether I loved it or hated it. 3 stars!

Good angst 90s rock album I don’t rly hear the soul thing people say about this at all 7/10

Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it

2-3 stars.

Musically, I love this. Classic '90s alt with a tinge of grunge is always a win. Lyrically, it's questionable. Obviously this isn't the first (or last) album to have unfortunate lyrics, and I get the bitter heartache, toxic relationship approach they're going for. But listening to some of these lyrics in 2024 makes me feel like this dude is not one I'd want to associate with. Anyway, standouts are Gentlemen, Be Sweet, and I Keep Coming Back - just need to ignore the lyrics for some of these.

The same song 11 times

En verdad está bueno, los instrumentales están increíbles pero más allá de eso no me llevo más del álbum

Viva Afghan

"Got a dick for a brain" -6/10

Probably a 3.5 for me. First time listening, but enjoyed it. A bit chaotic in places but a nice dip into a full Afghan Whigs album.

It was ok - very 90s

Saving this for when Jacque dumps me

I added “Be Sweet” to a playlist??!

Not bad although I do not remember a single thing about the album

I never heard this, which surprises me given when it came out. Pretty good.

3/5 at best. didn’t really connect with it.

I had never heard of this band or this album. It's sort of a concept album about the dysfunctional end of a relationship. They have a grungy, alternative rock sound with varying levels of heaviness that reminds me a bit of Smashing Pumpkins, with a little Minus the Bear thrown in there. I thought this was a perfectly serviceable 90s rock album.

Kind of mid. To me it started out okay, but by the end it was a chore. I won't come back to this. It was all kind of too similar.

It's okay.

twas ok

Not bad. 3/5

Album with ups and downs.

Pretty ok

Rating: 6/10 Started off great with the first few songs then became pretty derivative. The first few songs have an alternative rock feel which resembles much of the 90s but the band put their own spin on it at least. After this nothing of note really happens, it's listenable but nothing special. Favorite songs: If I Were Going, Gentlemen, Be Sweet, Debonair. Worst songs: What Jail Is Like, Brother Woodrow.

Good stuff. Pretty raw and seedy rock. I prefer the later albums with twilight singers, I think he perfected his style on those albums.

I've heard of the Afghan Whigs but never listened until today. Sort of a post-hardcore / Alt rock combination. I had to warm up to the vocals, but eventually came around. Cool vibe and interesting arrangements.

siii re 7,5/10

Great music - not always a fan of the lyrics, but it's definitely a great '90s sound!

I had all but forgotten about this band, and I actually saw them open for Aerosmith in 99 as one of my first concerts. As young as I was at the time, I didn't pay much attention to them as it was primarily there for Aerosmith. 25 years later rediscovering this band, they aren't that bad, but I feel they aren't all that memorable either. I listened to most of this on my way home a few hours ago and don't really recall much about it. I didn't really feel the need to skip songs, but for a 90s alternative band, I'd expect to be a lot more excited to discover the rest of their catalog. Meh Favorite track "Fountain and Fairfax" 2.5/5

Fun and brash alt band, pretty cool vocals and I like the lead!. 3.3

Has its moments but sounds dated.

OK but not great, I'd say

Fourth studio album! LOL. Didn't really understand this much. Songs 5,6, and 8 were meh at best.

An non autobiographical alt-rock break up album by The Afghan Whigs. Perfectly fine yet a little on the slower side for me, but was an immersion in the methods of warfare in the battle of the sexes - a dark, dramatic wallow in lust, shame, guilt, despair, deceit and obsession that's framed in dense rock. Best: Gentlemen Worst: Brother Woodrow

This album was ok. I like the instrumental but I think they need someone else to sing. Except when the woman sings in ‘My curse’. I like her voice a lot.

ну чё-то опять ни вокал ни музыка не вдохновили

Devin and Angela will hate this! Too angsty. I like it, but have never gone all-in on the Whigs.

Fine. It definitely sounds like an album from 1993.

It rocks. Timeless sound that could have been made any time the last thirty years. Great voice also. But I have no interest in listening to this self professed asshole no matter how self aware.

Some great stuff. Slow burn. Enjoyed

from midwest. alt/grunge. ‘Debonair’ from this album. nothing seems very remarkable to me.

Rating: 6/10

An above average grunge record featuring a characteristic distraught vocalist (that reminds me of Trent Reznor) and an anthemic hard rock sound that's both gritty and accessible with plenty of pop hooks, instrumental choices (e.g. acoustics), and song structure that mimic their tamer contemporaries in alt rock and alt country. The tracks were fine. Very little jumped out to me, and it did fall back on too many pop cliches. A few tracks like "Now You Know" sounded like filler, not offering anything substantial besides venting break-up steam. But there's diversity, started with stronger tracks, ending with an appropriate closer, and was a sufficient length. But most importantly, it sounds genuine although a bit derivative. Although I didn't care for it much, there's more style and completeness than many grunge and alt rock contemporaries at the time. Favorites: Gentlemen, Debonair, My Curse

I didn’t have time to listen to the full thing. Will listen tomorrow

3.5 stars. Dark lyrically (good break-up album) and less grungy than other 90's alt rock. Has some duds including "What Jail is Like" and "My Curse". But it's mostly a good listen and standouts are "Gentlemen" and "Debonair".

Interesting subject matter marred by a lack of tunes...

The Whigs were first a party opposed to an absolute Catholic monarchy in England in the late 1600s. Later, the Whigs were a party opposed to an overpowered executive in 1800s America. Still later, the Afghan Whigs were a party opposed to the dominance of Persian hair pieces. Or were they a party opposed to the centralized power of the communist government in Afghanistan in the late 1980s? Alas, these Afghan Whigs were just an American alternative rock band fond of unnecessary h’s. But they’re more fun to listen to than anyone describing the history of various Whig political parties. It was Rick McCollum’s guitar and John Curley’s bass that carried “Gentlemen,” but Greg Dulli’s vocals actually grew on me over the course of the album and a second listen. Similarly, I first thought the guest vocals by Marcy Mays on “My Curse” brought things to a screeching halt, but those too got a little better as the emotion and intensity built. I loved the haunting atmosphere of the closing track “Brother Woodrow,” and found myself not wanting it to end despite its over five minute length. It was a fitting coda on an album that felt very much like an album - a cohesive collection of songs carefully crafted to be listened to together, apparently inspired by Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks” in the use of recurring melodic riffs and lyrical imagery.

Stabil trea.

Great Great moments all over. Couldn't completely catch everything on first time but I should listen more. Emotional. Some really high moments and overall good album experience Final song phenomenal.

It's a highly regarded album, (In 2008, writer Bob Gendron published a critical and scholarly exploration of Gentlemen) but I dunno, I just couldn't get excited by it. Maybe it's a lyrical album, but I'm sure I care enough to explore further. Good guitar sounds, mind you

Decent enough, and some great guitar sounds, yet at the same time strangely somehow not enough to be very memorable.

I'd heard of Afghan Whigs, (and keep reading it as "Afghan Wings", I dunno, dyslexia), but never listened to anything by them. The album is decent enough, I enjoyed the guitars and bass riffs, but still all quite forgettable.

Tienen personalidad pero no me emocionan. 3/5.

It was a good album kinda grunge-y

I quite liked this album, but would have liked it more if it weren't so depressing. My favourite track was "Fountain and Fairfax".

5.5/10

Could see myself coming back to this one. Didn't blow me away, but it's very solid. Closer to a 4 than a 3.

Mid. Sad boy alt rock. Honesty the lyrics were funny sometimes. But really just feels like a heart broken dude singing some BS with some good instruments behind him

Another band that I have heard of, but have never listened to. Honestly didn't actively listen to this, but I did listen in the background. It was decent and I liked some of the songs on there, but there was nothing that really jumped off the page at me. Again, that's probably my fault for not listening intently.

Here lies an album that sits in the grunge genre but with oddly funky elements

# Playlist track - Gentlemen # Notes - I had that cover SO much. - Enjoyable album, but doesn't hold itself all the way. The final songs are not very interesting. - I had high hopes for this, because I really like their album "[[The Afghan Whigs, Do The Beast|Do the beast]]" from 2014. That's on me, I guess.

I've heard it several times, I like it.

Gnaz gut eigentlich

Interesting to hear this band, having known of the name for a long time. 'Gentlemen' was my favourite track.

A decent rock album, but didn’t leave any impression on me.

I like it, I swear I've heard this group's name before but I can't say I'm familiar with their work. This is just some solid rock music, not much at all to distinguish it for me but the riffs and melodies are strong. Some solid bangers in here. Not everything has to be remarkable to be good, and that's what this album is: good rock. Favorite tracks: If I Were Going, Be Sweet, What Jail Is Like, I Keep Coming Back. Album art: Yellow/sepia style photo of a boy and a girl. Why does this seem like a fighting couple? They both look so weary. For some odd reason, the art on Apple Music is animated - not sure why exactly they picked this album to do that, but then again we just had Doggystyle and that one was animated on there too, to a much more extreme variation. Decent cover though. 3.5/5

Feel like this albums gone under the radar - some great tracks, but in a nutshell you take one look at that album cover and band name and instantly skip Maybe these were the inspiration behind esteemed British Rapper Afghan Dan...

weird album, especially the vocals, but not super bad, on the edge between 3 and 4

Decent but much better out there with this style

It goes hard but the singer needs autotune.

Not bad

too rock-y

alternative rock and grunge of this genre is quite competitive for me and this is not the best. maybe i just personally don't like the grungy sound mixed with the soul influence this clearly has, i feel it removes a little bit of the angsty sound while keep the angsty lyrics. also the vocalist was not my favourite. still a decent listen though.

While "Gentlemen" doesn't tap into my personal brand of angst, it does capture familiar emotions and interpersonal struggles. As an album the songs feel less like a few singles taped together with some b-sides and more like a deliberately written tribute to waning relationships, and what's left in their wake. I would have preferred to hear more female vocals in the album. The choice of a female lead in "My Curse" and supporting female backup vocals in "Now You Know" were a welcome / needed change to the onslaught of Greg Dulli. Even after channeling my (thankfully) distant disappointment and pain vis-a-vis romance, I still only find myself sympathizing for the imagined subjects of the songs, never quite reaching the point of empathy. Finishing this album left me with a nagging desire to go listen to some blown-out Mitsky songs.

This was a bit disappointing. The first time I heard the Afghan Whigs was a snippet of a song I don’t remember the name of, and it made me interested in their music, although I never really checked them out. This album just kind of felt like background alt-rock music. I’d still give it a 3, and I feel like a lot of the albums I’m listening to recently have felt like they’re seeping into the background, so it might just be my attention.

Better than I remember Afghan Wings, but still for this list probably a 3.5

I understand it. I see its place in the canon. I appreciate the sort of “we dumped in some of all the ingredients in the cabinets but we worked on it to make it palatable but also new” style. And.. for me? It’s just okay. It feels like I should just go listen to the Replacements.

The instrumentation, the vocals(mostly), the riffs, the bass, it’s all great for the most part. But, the lyrics.. they can be unbearable at parts. This one is one I MAY come back to but not for the song writing.

Very different and I think I quite like it! A bit wailing in places, but there’s some great Melodie’s in there as well.

This was decent. It had parts that I enjoyed, but I didn't quite get into it like I would have liked.

Mostly fine, except for I keep coming back which grated my soul like nails on a chalk board. Bruh needed a vocal coach or something

Boring

This was on track to be a solid 4-star album. Solid jams, great energy, lots of attitude... But it quickly outstayed its welcome. By track 4, the intentionally atonal wailing that was such a vibe in the early-to-mid-90s had blown past "nostalgic" and was well into the "shut the hell up already" zone. Shame. It had a lot of promise.

I feel like I would have really loved this record circa 1996 as a 14 year old. As a 41 year old I was not into it. It wasn’t bad per se - but not something I’d want to return to.

Debonair is a high point. Otherwise this is the epitome of an early 90s, grunge-adjacent, rock album. And I say that, as a fan of early 90s rock music, in the least nostalgic/complementary way possible. It's just kind of boring. The singer isn't great. It kind of reminds me of The Lemonheads or Paul Westerberg. Not really heavy enough to be grunge, but with some of the same affectations. A grunge-ish paint-by-numbers album, if you will. Not terrible, I guess. Would give a 2.5 if I could.

Great album cover. Songs are decent.

Varsin viihdyttävä. Viikonlopun aikana pyörähti useamman kerran läpi.

Uusi tuttavuus.

2.9/5 - Nothing fancy, and ona first listen i assumed they were like every other late 80s - mid 90's grunge band. i felt i was missing something. A second listen and their uniqueness came to me. It sjus tnot always prevalent, or front and center. But it's got some enjoyable songs on it.

Started strong, liked the first couple of songs, then took a turn for the worse

Melody and pitch are optional, but a lot of mid-90s aggro. 3.5

Middling

Interesting Indy

The music on this was just okay. But there was more raw emotion on here than we usually hear on a record. Almost confessional. A touch cringe but still powerful

I mean it’s not something I’d throw on everyday but it’s not awful background noise.

3/5 interesting but no.

Rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.

It started too sad for me but hen developed into Aspen very cool alternative rock. Nice to listen to once in a while

I enjoyed it quite a lot, especially the instrumentals.

Woah woah! Honestly not much to say about this album. I loved the guitar parts! But I did not particularly enjoy this approach to the vocal production. I feel like it left me wanting more. The songs, the tones, even the lyrical content was all pretty enjoyable though.

interesting. Rough. Not 'catchy' exactly. I should prob give more listens.

Not what I was expecting. Did the job as background music. Not sure I'd listen to it again but was ok.

Good. Wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again tho.

Melancholy MOR. Meh.

Hard to rate... Really left no lasting impression for me. 90s grunge influences, but too whiny for my taste. The music is actually quite good, but the singing/voice/lyrics are just… existent.

Not really my thing. Too punchy

not my style

This is not terrible, but terribly unremarkable. I'm not a fan of the vocal delivery. Kind of a bad mix of Soul Asylum and Jane's Addiction.

Why does this name sound so familiar? I can't think of any songs by them but I must have heard them before because it sounds so familiar. Let's check it out! I'm liking it. Giving me The Cure vibes somehow. I like the slow tempo. I'll give it 3 stars.

3.5 if i could. Good experimental post-punk / 90s alternative album, just not terribly original. Derivative at times. High highs and low lows

Everything sounds decent I guess, but the whole thing is a little forgettable. This is one where I’m surprised how regarded it is, to me it’s a dime a dozen.

Another group I've never heard of, I enjoyed this as it glided by. Got me in the mood for my end-of-term 1993 dress-up tomorrow (30th anniversary of my school).

Nothing wrong with this. 3.5 starts, but the Whigs - eternally half-way up the main stage bill at Reading in the early 90s - are not really a Champions League level act are they?

hard to pick, feel like on the whole a 2 but some were like 4

First time I've heard this band. Pleasant enough.

Not exactly what I expected! I thought these guys were more collage/indie rock but it feels like proto-deftones. Interesting!

I never wanted to listen to this because the album cover is gross; bear in mind that I listen to a lot of death metal in my free time and those never bother me. Anyway, this was overall an okay listen.

this was ok. not great, not terrible. just ok.

New song starts, hey, this is pretty good. Halfway through it, wtf happened? Repeat x album.

This is ok. Another “Why is this on this list?” album.

Competent

I’ve always meant to check this band out. Neat

This sounds really good, but the lyrics are kinda trash.

Musically I like this, but I'm not so sure about the vocals. His voice has a bit of the same quality that J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. has, that vocal style that sounds like he's constipated. Aside from that though this is pretty good. 3 stars.
