No thank you

Never really got them and still don’t

meh, yeah, you know!? don't really get it, just a bit of nonsense really- some nice bass guitar driving it along at times but yeah, nonsense really. the end.

Really not sure what to think of this. It lays the foundations of a lot of things i like, but i just have no connection to it. I saw them live in 2009 or so and it was the same, not for me.

I don't understand Faith No More, the recordings always sound like I'm hearing it through somone elses speakers as theyre walking by. The guitar tone is bad and it's like they want they keyboard to be as loud as the drums. I don't know anything about recording but they should have fired their engineer and producer

Technically only a year out, but would have sworn this album came out in the early 90’s… “Epic” is still alright.

Well, it’s unique!

Recognized one song.

Was ready to condemn it to a 1 star after Epic, but a few decent riffs throughout saved it.

It’s a struggle… it’s just too much - It’s like they try too hard. Epic was a massive hit when I was young, so I still kinda enjoy that. War Pigs is also kinda good because it’s War Pigs - One of the best heavy songs of all time. I’d much rather listen to Sabbath’s own version though

A bit hit and miss. Not one I’d return to.

No thank you. Maybe if I’d heard them at a different time in my life I would have liked it but not now. The best part was the Black Sabbath “War Pigs” cover and even that was only good because it reminded me of the original.

Top Tip - instead of listening to this whole album, simply listen to Rock Me Amadeus by Falco and save yourself some valuable time.

Sounds like they were ahead of their time

Couldn't vibe with this one. 2.5

Enjoyed one song. Not my cup of tea, though I have seen Faith No More play live back in the day.

Epic is an alright, arguable, classic. The metal isn't bad, but for the most part I just don't like the vocals. A lot are too whiny. The was pigs cover didn't really do much

A good one time listen, but I will not be revisiting this. For a metal/hard rock album some solid instrumentation and expectedly some rough vocals in parts.

Not really my jam, didn’t like his voice

This is noise. His voice is grating. Epic is the only good thing on this album...

The surprising thing about this album to me is that it came out in 1989. I mean I had heard songs from this album over the years and always thought it was one of the mid 90s grunge/funk/metal mashups that sort of led to the nu-metal genre. Going back now and listening to it knowing when it was released, I should have known better. There are some elements of this that sound exactly like the early Chili Peppers which would have been around the same time I think. It's a decent album, not one I would go back to. The cover of War Pigs was kind of a nice surprise. My favorite thing about it is the bass - great tone, great playing throughout. Least favorite thing about it - the vocals absolutely suck. 2.5/5 and rounding down

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

not my vibe

Not my cuppa.

The Real Thing by Faith No More wasn’t for me. Well made, but just not my style of music.

The backing band is REALLY good. I do NOT like this vocalist. Sometimes it works, but most times...it is bad. God does he ruin "War Pigs".....MAYBEEE this album is a 2.5. It is just the singer. He sounds like he is whining...."Epic" is ICONIC tho! Liked Songs: "From Out of Nowhere" , "Epic" , "Zombie Eaters" , "The Real Thing" , "The Morning After" , "Woodpecker From Mars"

This is some proper ass water. I hated the bass sound, the vocalist sounded like he had an annoying accent. I was like woah finally a good song? Nah its just a cover of an amazing song.

4/10 not for me

# Album Name: The real thing # Artist: Faith no more # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Wow, this was a snore fest. One hit wonder with epic and thats it. # Top Tunes: Epic # Would I listen to it again? No

Together with the Chili Peppers, Faith No More helped popularize the crossover genre, and from hearing this record for the first time, the latter leaned more into the metal side of things. It's certainly not bad, but I can't shake the feeling that I've grown out of this particular style. In my late teenage years I'd probably been all over this, but now it's merely "OK" to me, without leaving much of an lasting impression behind. It doesn't help that this record sounds like it's trying very hard to convey an attitude, to come of as cool and, in the end, achieving the opposite by trying too hard.

I hate the “hair metal” sound of some of their songs. It’s like nails on a chalkboard

I confess to having a soft spot for this album. I think I owned a copy 35 or so years ago. It certainly sounds familiar. But it never really stuck. I moved on... Some of the songs came back to me whilst listening this morning. Epic is indeed, a little epic. The usual metal fuck filter was bypassed with a little funk added here and there. But funk metal is still something to be frowned upon. War Pigs actually gave me a headache.

Suburban Tribe tyyppistä melodista, joskus syntikka rokkia jossa hevin vivahteet. Kuunneltavaa.

The Real Thing - Faith No More ⭐️⭐️ I don't much like this band, but I'll give them TWO STARS because Brujeria's Billy Gould is a member, and I like wearing my Matando Güeros t shirt even though I'm blonde PLUS Taco truck workers call me "Güerita" and give me extra guacamole. "¡Viva La Raza!"

it sucks, but it sucks in weird and creative ways

The synth got pretty annoying pretty quick, but overall this is more my jam than most of what I’ve received in the past couple weeks. At its core I still expect an album to demonstrate to me why it’s a “must-hear”, and I’m just not getting that from this one.

Vaihtoehto teineille, joille Gunnarit ja Metallica eivät kelpaa. Paikoin viihdyttävääkin, mutta epätyydyttävän tarkkaa ja painavaa. Auttaa, jos tykkää sarjakuvista.

Pretty good. Not for me tho

Wasn't bad but got bored of it fast. Reminded me of Smashing Pumpkins at times. High 2.

Didn’t enjoy

This was pretty bad

War Pigs is fire

Apparently these guys are kinda the godfathers of Numetal? I can certainly hear that and I hate it. Numetal is not for me and these guys didn’t do much for me. Woodpecker from Mars was good though and I didn’t mind the cover of War Pigs. Didn’t really care for the rest though.

Are they ashamed of being metal? This album buries the lede, like they need to ease you into it. It has a few good moments, but I never felt inspired. I think I'm a bit harsher on this than I should be because I partially blame this album for Limp Bizkit.

basically the opposite of my thing but I respect how hard they're going for it

Baselines were pretty mint War pigs cover was alreyt

Only really knew Epic before this. The album, is fine, it's just very forgettable.

Bang out of the gate. But then it stumbled. Rap-cheese metal voiced and guitar-funk just hasn't realized what it should do and what it should avoid. I find myself skipping out of tunes. Enjoyed Underwater Love finally--it seems to have avoided the banal metal limitations. Maybe I was into Woodprcket because it had no vocals. Do not try to imitate War Pigs. Listen to War Pigs.

When I first saw this come up, I misread it as Faithless. And got really excited. And then realised it wasn’t what I wanted it to be. I’ve never been into Faith No More. I remember when Epic was everywhere and seeped into our subconscious. I don’t mind it and actually really liked Woodpeckers from Mars - that put a smile on my face. But I could happily ditch the rest.

not a fan

The best song in the album is one they didn't write. Woodpecker from Mars probably takes second. The rest of it wasn't particularly enjoyable to my tastes.

metal rock, 1989 -> 2

Not feeling it

How embarrassing

Not that fussed really

"Epic" is decent, but not as good as I remembered it. Didn't know there was a black sabbath "War pigs" bonus track. 2,4/5

This is not my thing so I’ll reserve judgement. Decent cover of War Pigs.

I only cared about war pigs

I was worried that the sunny weather was inflating my scores: I haven't given a 1 or a 2 since the start of spring. But this album was an easy way to break the run. Apart from parts of "From out of Nowhere", "Woodpecker from Mars" and the "War Pigs" cover there wasn't really much in this album which I liked at all. It's very whiney and the songs are kind of tuneless.

Very 90s. I'm sure at the time it was seen as an evolution of rock, but now it feels isolated and dated.

I can only assume that this album made the list in spite of the vocals and lyrics. Honestly, the vocals and a wild choice and not in a good way. Is this the precursor to the Emo bands we were assaulted by the following decade? A shame, honestly, because the bass and drums are absolute stars on this album. I’m hearing strong Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queensryche, and Living Color “influences” here. A cover of Epic with a strong vocal is hopefully in the works somewhere.

Again another OK album but that’s not what I signed up for is it? Obviously I’ve heard Epic which sounds good but is that because it’s familiar? War Pigs cover, why? I like their cover of Easy but that’s not on here!

I dunno, man. This certainly is a rock album that happened.

Had this on in the background while cooking. Probably didn't listen that attentative, but It felt quite bland. I think I've heard 'Epic' before, and if not, then that stood out as a better song than the rest - which were unremarkable. Cover of 'War Pigs' was decent, but that's probably just because it sounded quite close to the original. Sabbath did it better either way. Nothing really noteworthy with this record, doesn't belong on the list in my opinion. Strong 2.

Way to close to the whiny 90s metal trend for my taste. I know of Faith No More but I couldn't name a single song or really what type of music it was before this album. After listening to it I only knew "Epic" from this album. I of course also know "War Pigs" but their cover was pretty bad in my opinion. Won't come back to and didn't really enjoy it.

Hated this less than I expected. First track and the later instrumental track were the only standouts. Couldn't get past the singers nasal, whiny tones.

1001 tracks maybe for the first two, the rest is insanely repetitive, sooo long and generally just the missing link between grunge and nu metal that nobody needed.

Meh. Couple of good songs

Faith No More is a band from San Francisco that creates a version of metal with vocals that trend towards rap. The Real Thing is their third album, and the first to feature vocalist Mike Patton. The album was the group's most successful album. The album includes "Epic," the band's most successful single, and the high point of the album. The tracks are bass-heavy, funk inspired hard rock, in the vein of Red Hot Chili Peppers. A few of them drag on for far too long...

Co-worker music

Our local hard rock radio station used to play Faith No More, and perhaps they still do, but I haven’t listened to it much. This is standard heavy metal/hard rock, with a bit of rap thrown in. Nothing here that stands out as above par in my opinion.

the music gives cool positive vibes. I got confused what genre do they sing in cuz it was here and there but thats fine too. Too many long songs I try.... It's hard to listen to a whole song cuz i don't think i like so far. Epic was cool. Surprise! Your're Dead! was rock and roll i think and i have a headache so the timing wasn't right. Woodpecker From Mars was actually good. i enjoyed listening to all the instruments and the music more than any song with vocals. Im not gonna pick this album cuz i want to ever

a bunch of forgettable modern rock with a cover of War Pigs thrown in at the end

Not terrible, except the singer. What an awful, annoying voice.

The last track is pretty cool, but generally these guys' sound isn't my thing.

Th first was more catchy but I thought but i couldn’t have been more let down for “epic” because it sounds retarded

Not a huge fan of metal so I didn't really enjoy the album but it seemed like great work I guess so I can't say that it's really bad so that's a 2 but a small one.

I really thought it was much more a pre-cursor to grunge at least through the first few tracks, but there is definitely a lot of rap metal here. It's interesting you'd say the vocals are soulless when I think Mike Patton has always been the biggest selling point for Faith No More. All that being said, Epic was a good song, and the cover of War Pigs was pretty much right on the money. The rest of the album I could have done without.

1. The bass player is sick. 2. When I listen to this, I think of a more modern version of this sound, Korn. 3. If this was the origins of nu-metal, then man did it start out in rough shape. This feels like an edgy and soulless (if those can be combined). At least that's the vibe I get from the singer. The songs are a hit or a miss. And most of them for me, are a miss.

This album starts promisingly enough with what sounds like a solid bit of late 80’s metal, but then we come to the second track. Oh boy. White people rapping is something that rarely ends well and shoehorning it into a metal track just makes it more toe-curlingly embarrassing. The previous lead singer Chuck Mosley just about got away with it, but new boy for this album Mike Patton is a fish out of water (literally, in the notorious shot of a fish flopping around in the video that went with this song). Almost unbelievably, it gets worse when he tries to be faux emotional with the track Zombie Eaters. No, just no. The album very nearly redeems itself with a surprisingly faithful cover of the classic War Pigs by Black Sabbath, but the overall impression is of something that has dated very badly.

Seemed pretty generic to me.

Yeah..........this was different, but I wouldn't call it good. One hit wonder territory for sure. When your second best song on the album is a straight cover of War Pigs, which you have no chance to do better than the Sabbath....maybe don't? 2 because Epic is a legitimately amazing song, but the rest....eesh

Boring. Supposed to be metal, but sounds more like plastic. Devoid of any passion.

how is this guy so bad at picking albums bruh 😭

Pre-listening thoughts: funk metal is a crazy genre combo. I am wary. Post/during listening thoughts: there’s a nasal quality to this guys voice that I’m not a huge fan of. Like sometimes he borders sounding like SpongeBob. This sort of feels like if Linkin Park met RHCP. It’s definitely more accessible than a lot of metal, but I’m not sure that I like it. 3/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: From Out of Nowhere, Falling to Pieces Least fav tracks: Epic, Zombie Eaters, The Real Thing

I remember hating this rock sound when it was new, I am no more a fan now it’s old Epic is a good tune but quite happy to skip the rest

average at best

Obviously this had a big influence on music in the future. Melodically the album has it's moments and the production isn't bad. The vocals get tiring and the songs are a little formulaic feeling at times. Somewhere between a 2 and 3 for me

What a strange album. The rapping parts I really don't like at all, but the weird singing parts I find strangely charming? At parts it almost reminds me of that album from the Mars Volta. I give it props for being something different, and I like the War Pigs cover. The last track was my favorite. 5/10

Epic as a track is pretty much exactly that. The rest of the album? Not so much. Are these guys at the credible end of the 80s hair-metal spectrum, or the naff end of the early- 90s grunge-adjacent spectrum, or some other kind of thing? Stopped caring at some point during my listen.

Started off good, but it started feeling a bit repetitive towards the end

War Pigs is good. Otherwise, not for me.

So this is what spawned all those awful nu-metal bands of the 90s and early 2000s

Didn’t like this, his voice was higher than I thought it would be. Metal but kind of generic boring. Garrett says he sings differently on other albums.

“Surprise! You’re Dead!” was a surprise. Shifted things in a much more metal direction than I expected from the “Epic” guys. While it swings back and forth between hair metal, thrash metal, and funk metal, it's hard to get a good read on Faith No More. Are they shooting for Metallica or Red Hot Chili Peppers? More interesting than the genre swings, however, was the discovery that Faith No More was fronted by Mr. Bungle’s Mike Patton. I never really listened to Mr. Bungle, but my college roommate loved them.

Some proper rock with great bass and guitar goin on here. Great cover of war pigs, but that was the only teach that really stuck out to me.

Rap metal, huh? My son and his crowd dug this back then, reminds me of Wayne's World kinda effort... 2 stars for nostalgia

not my jam.

Not particularly interesting.

First ever listen. This was largely enjoyable. Slight criticism is that the rapping sounds weak and outdated.

Ugh, real love/hate relationship with this one. There are some great tracks, to which I gleefully sing along. But at its core, this is not far away from speed metal, which I tend to despise. I respect the skill, but find so much of it cheesy.

I kept trying to give it a fair shot but found myself skipping to the next song half way thru. No tea no shade, this sounds like something my dad would like.

"Zombie Eaters" is a seriously weird song, and Edge of the World is even worse.

I remember this mob. They were the act for a while. Filled the airwaves, that special sound they found just rocked it. The album ... Not quite so much. I had a hear, and it was recognisable and energetic, and that's all I can really say about it. Unlikely to listen to again. Not never, but unlikely. 2 stars.

Rock that borders onto metal is not my thing. There are a couple of good songs on this album but that is about it! Favourite song: Zombie eaters was a good song out of a bad bunch and I liked the cover of War Pigs but it doesnt touvh the original. Least favourite: The rest of the album Album artwork: Cool cover

Leiðinlegt.

Not my thing. Kind of the worst of all worlds. Whiny country-metal vocals, uninteresting glam rock instrumentation, and boring lyrics.

Some albums are beautiful curated, while piece. This is not that. It’s all over the place. Some times good … some times super heavy … mostly just a bit meh.

I think I sort of liked this album in the 90s, but it's not aged well and certainly not an albums worth of listening. 2 best track - Epic, obviously.

Mike Patton ABSOLUTELY deserves to be represented on this list, but for Mr. Bungle!!! For Mr. Bungle people! Not for this! 2 fumbles outta 5 🏈🏈

I have something against the voice of the frontman.

An okay album but not really my thing.

Decent music and songs. Shame about the comic con voice. Cheap-looking album cover, too.

3 observations: - I hate the singer’s voice, or at least the weird affect he gives it. I may have been generous and rated the album 3*, but that voice irreparably dragged the whole thing down. - A few tracks in, I had to check which year this came out - it sounds exactly like early 2000s nu-metal, so I was surprised it was so much older. I guess there’s something admirable about that, but I hate nu-metal. - “Epic” took me back to playing Rock Band with my younger sister and joking about what “it” could be. Sorry, though, the nostalgia can’t save it.

Mike Patton is no Chest Rockwell

I have to say no thank you to this one

American Rock music.

2 stars is still more than I thought I’d like it

If they had put up a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Musical” on Broadway in the early 90’s, it probably would’ve sounded just like this.

Faith No more exist on the edge of my consciousness and this album has never registered. Was expecting more than what actually tuned up on this album. Same old same old so instantly forgettable. 2/5 10/9/24

I really thought that the song Epic came out in like 1994 because it just feels of that time. We also missed that song during trivia the other week so I am now less likely to forget it. However, I did not enjoy this album lol

An interesting listen, cool to see the influence in nu-metal bands like korn, limp bizkit, papa roach. Guys voice was annoying. I liked epic and war pigs (credit mostly to Ozzie). Wouldn’t actively seek this out but glad we got it.

I don't really care for the lead singers voice.

Лучшая песня - Woodpecker From Mars.

not for me

rakastan ääntä! tämä on se oikea ääni.... edeltäkävijä.. nämä herrat kakkasivat jo housuun 10 vuotta ennen kun muut!!! waaauu uusi asia!!! housuunkakkaus!!! annetaan akolaadeja kun nämä herrat keksivät uuden trendin joka on: kakkaaminen housuunminen. en usko enään mihinkään (paitsi kakkaamiseen housuun.) tämä bändi on vestigiaali... ehkä joskus kuunneltava, ei mitään virkaa nykyään... rakastan ääntä! tämä on se oikea ääni....edeltäkävijä.. woodpecker from mars

Not great. I don't care for this music much more or less than I did in the late 1980's.

Ugh. I’m so conflicted. I hate this band because they are pricks who’ve feuded with RHCP, which like sorry bros but you’re not even in the same league so how very dare you?? But I also acknowledge that these guys were part of the early rap-rock alt days that forged nü-metal. And even though I don’t like nü-metal, it was an innovation in music at the time. Arrrgh! Epic has catchy parts that I will sing along to sometimes, but I also have a strong urge to skip it when it pops up on shuffle or the radio because it’s grating and annoying too. And I hate this album cover, it’s so crappy and ugly. Hmm. I don’t want to listen to any more of this junk.

The Real Thing is some sort of funk/rap infused metal. It’s all over place. It’s long and why is there a cover of War Pigs? Not for me 4.9/10

Good version of War Pigs

I wonder if this is how we'll think of Imagine Dragons in 20 years.

Another meh.

Did not enjoy

Another no from me dawg

Day 11 - June 12, 2024 I fucking hate nu-metal, and now I can say I hate its origins just as much. At least From Out of Nowhere and The Real Thing are bangers. 2/5

Not the worst metal album I’ve heard but not my cup of tea.

I have to commend it for blending so many styles and sounds and still feeling like a hard rock album, but it's not really my jam. 2/5

I did not enjoy this album. It was silly in an annoying way. Like a bunch of failed Red Hot Chili Peppers songs. The blending of metal with other genres did a disservice to the songs. They’re jacks of no trades, masters of none. It was intriguing to hear how every song was ruined. Standouts: The Real Thing and Woodpecker From Mars.

Some cool parts, a lot kind of boring, vocals a bit jarring

- if you close your eyes at some parts it sounds like spongebob is singing

First time listening. 1x.

For me, this would be "listen no more". I don't think I'm a fan of the genre-mash and the singer's voice is kind of annoying. Still, I kind of get the appeal which saved this from being a 1 star album.

Didn't love the vocals or the vibe on this. The chorus on Epic sounded cool for a second. So that brings it to 2 stars

It was alright. Probably closer to a 2.5 for me because it was on the "louder"/metal side of rock, which isn't usually my thing. I didn't mind the lead vocalists voice as much as other metal albums though and some of the songs were fun and catchy.

When I think of Faith No More I think of the track "Epic". I've had enough of "Epic" and Faith No More to last my lifetime, but I tried to give the album a shot. I listened to all of the regular tracks and a couple bounus tracks. "Falling to Pieces" is a good example of what I don't like in the vocal qualities of the band, and is present throughout the album. The vocals seem like an effort to complain while trying to immitate Axl Rose and David Lee Roth at the same time. The music was only mildly engaging and couldn't stand up against what I dislike about the delivery of the vocals. There are people that love(d) this band, but I can't get there. At best I found a couple okay tracks, but this album rests firmly at 2 stars. If this is Rap Metal, Rap Metal isn't my thing.

kind of like vanilla ice sitting in with primus

Poor mans Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and I don’t even like the RHCP. Simpsons: No

The Pokérap could have been on here and I wouldn’t have noticed

Voice like nails down a chalkboard. He can hit notes, just not in a way I find pleasing. Some nice bass parts at times.

Tämän(kään) hypetystä en täysin ymmärrä, mut ihan ok lätty

Not my thing

Bit tough

I only knew “Epic” and would have been fine living my whole life that way. Veered between lame late-80’s metal, RHCP imitations and just stupid California bro- music, with cringy lyrics running throughout. Some of the bass and drums were well done, which is not surprising for a metal band. I also appreciated the willingness to experiment with various genres. But all in all, this is a hard pass for me.

Not like

Epic is a Epic song! But I prefer Brittish music every day, get bored of this type of US rock music, for me the real classic US guitar music is Velvet Underground, Pixies, Sonic Youth or the madness of e.g. Butthole Surfers or Residents or Violent Femmes.

Not a huge fan of this tbh apart from the song Epic

2.5 I thought faith no more was a boy band just from the name. I knew that one song, and it was dece, but the best song on the album was the Sabbath cover so you can’t rate it too high

Phonetic, driven rhythms; cartoon-like voice

Basic rock with 4 good lines in the album. Sounds like a guitar hero song I’d play once in campaign and never again.

Like a naff Metallica/Limp Bizkit merge. I think the cover of War Pigs really set me off into giving this a 2.

A mix of several of my least favorite bands from the era, as well as some of my least favorite parts of bands I do like (RHCP).

Damn this sucked. Low 2.

Not for me

I don’t love the lead singers voice and just didn’t really care for the album

Geht so.

"Rock-pop" con una voz sin personalidad y demasiado neutro para mi gusto. No me dice nada ni capta mi interés. Tiene una versión de Black Sabath casi igual pero sin sustancia.

If you were a 14 year old boy in 1989, I’m pretty sure you thought this album made you change your pants.

Not a fan of Patton, but some good musical ideas and performances. 2.5/5

I heard a lot of nu-metal/rap metal roots here, doesn't surprise me if bands like Korn and Rage Against The Machine took some inspirations from them. Mike Patton's voice is good, it serves well this mix of genres. There is literally everything here: funk, heavy metal, hardcore punk, hard rock, soul, rap... everything. A pretty good metal album overall, the only thing that i don't like is the production quality, it kinda aged bad. It's still listenable in my opinion, but it's noticeable. It's more prominent in some tracks more than the others anyway (mainly Falling to Pieces) But I can excuse it because the Black Sabbath's cover of War Pigs is neat! Favourite songs: Epic, Edge of The World, Zombie Eaters, War Pigs

Ick. Not for me. Cool if you like it, but I don't get it.

It was like Axl Rose singing with an annoying accent and doing rap over alternative metal I already forgot.

Blasphemous as it is... FNM never did it for me.

never got into them and apparently still don’t vibe with it. epic still a banger tho

The cover of War Pigs is so faithful, there's no reason not to just listen to the original. Epic is still a banger, but like much of the rest of the album, is peppered with some corny lyrics and vocal delivery. Sorry Geof, just not my cup of tea.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: not really Favourite song: didn’t have one

2/5. I know this band is super popular because of the song “Epic” which I believe was showcased in Guitar Hero. This just didn’t click with me. Tone was not any good or exciting.

Pretty exhausting. Similar to a bunch of music I like but just doesn't connect with me. Epic was fun on Rock Band though. 2.5/5

OK. Decent rock here, but that’s it for me. Never understand the hype about FNM

Ohhhh, This song. (Epic) I forgot how cheesy this was. Back to spoken word. Is it weird that I'm craving something with you know, singing? Wow, I really hate his voice. Like in a mixtape with other bands or on the radio it could be a good shake up but back to back? It gets grating. Ok, guitar is getting a little more fun. Yep, the metal is more fun than the altrock stuff on this one. Heresy. I know. Oh, he can sing sweetly after all. Nice. Well, that didn't last. And this song. Classic cover. (War Pigs)

boring

Sounded too much like hair metal. 2

Hmm I really don’t like the record to be honest.

It's okay, but the Red Hot Chilli Peppers did it better

I have never cared to listen to this band at all. Mike Patton seems like a novelty act to me and I have never given him or his projects the benefit of the doubt--except for Lovage I guess, which is really excellent. I did not even know that Mike Patton was not the original singer of this band, but I guess this is the first album that came out with him as the lead vocalist, it is just whatever, pretty meh middle of the road late 80s rock. It's about 10-12 minutes too long and includes a needless 8 minute cover of War Pigs. Don't feel like it's a worth inclusion on this list at all.

I made it as far as Zombie Eaters before dropping out, which is maybe a personal record with nu metal? I credit the fact that this shows some other influences instead of being just straight trash

Some of the instrumentals go pretty hard...but damn...I do not like this vocalist lol.

Can't stand Patton's clean vocals on this. The Sabbath cover is great, and there are some other decent songs, but it's not enough to enjoy this even a little bit.

Decent album, great cover of War Pigs. I don't really enjoy the singer's voice.

I don't think this adds much to the history of music. A couple of good songs and then just a turgid rehash over and over.

some cool riffs but not really enjoyable beyond that. the most popular song was interesting the first time I heard it, but just kind of annoying since.

never listening to this again. Vocals are really awful.

An eclectic rock album with elements of metal, funk, hip hop, prog and synth. However, it is the straight up rock songs that appeal most to me. Apparently this album led to beef with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with Anthony Kiedis accusing Faith No More's new singer, Mike Patton, of stealing his style. Quite why he'd have wanted to do that is a mystery. The RHCP funk style songs are the weakest on the album. FNM > RHCP. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Epic Date listened: 14/04/23

Better listen than I remember

Genuinely shocked this was from 1989. Points for being ahead of its time but just can't get over how cornball his voice is and Epic being just so dumb. Has its moments but overall not my bag.

Too heavy for me

Some better tracks at the back of the album, but overall - not for me.

nothing playlist worhty really

Hard rock peaked in the 70's, this is too little too late to be interesting.

I really loved it as a meme but maybe not as music

Probably the most ridiculous vocals I’ve heard yet. EPIC was a standout song in the most ironic way possible. I’ve listened to it 3-4 times now. Send help.

Decidedly average.

Sorry guys, I didn't like the Faith No More album. I can understand why people would like it, but the singer's voice really wasn't for me.

It's an interesting listen, but It's not... super listenable?

only needed to listen to that one song. I get the jist.

Not my vibe

What is this? Only familiar with one song and the rest are kind of ok, not sure this is my thing.

I didn't really like this. Whiny and not my style.

Well, call me surprised. The only song I recall hearing from these guys was Epic and radio destroyed any chance of me enjoying by overplaying to the point of annoyance. Anyway, I always thought these guys were more a rappers kinda band, but the surprise here is they are rockers, not rappers. First song was solid and enjoyed. The guy's voice is a little annoying at times, but works for this band. No a big fan overall, but it wasn't too bad. Something about the drumming in Falling to Pieces reminds me of another song, but can't put my finger on it. Surprise, you're Dead reminds me more of the in your face, anger type rock. OK, but not really my thing. Loved the song title, Woodpecker from Mars, but not so much the song. Props for trying War Pigs. Again, OK, but nothing special. Last time I heard this song, Matt and Evan H were singing! Another just OK for me. 2.5 but will score 2

Listened to on 2/21/23 2.5/5 Favorite song: Epic I usually love 80s but this was borderline scream-o music and gave me a headache

Unusual Album, not what I expected

I though this was just OK, I only knew Epic well to begin with. A couple of other tracks stood out to me, but none were particularly memorable.

Speaking generously, this album demonstrates some range across styles and offers a ‘different’ sound.. that said, I would personally prefer quality in one genre over mediocrity in several. Woodpecker from Mars and the War Pigs cover tell me they might have some chops in rock/metal but the half attempts at hip hop, funk, jazz etc are all distracting at best. Many bad songs throughout make me think the well-known Epic may have been either a fluke or maybe just a reason enough to throw together a record to capitalize. 1.8

Not for me but I can understand why people like them

That one song sounded familiar

Unique for and at the time, but does not hold up to time. Not and good as the album that followed “angel dust” very much tainted by the bands it inspired

It's not that the Faith No More members have no talent or even don't have any great musical ideas once in a while... Every time I happen to listen to a Mike Patton side-project, I'm usually amazed by the artistry that's involved in it (special mention for Fantomas and Tomahawk). No, the problem is that, as energetic, original and forward-sounding as Faith No More was when they broke out, they are now actually, literally *painful* to listen to. Where should we start, the hard-rock-by-number parts, the awfully dated rapping, or the extravagant and theatrical vocals on choruses? It's odd to think that with a relatively similar formula, Red Hot Chili Peppers actually aged far better, at least from *Blood Sugar Sex Magic* onwards... Maybe this difference could be explained by the dynamics of Kiedis and co.'s instrumentation, a more subdued restraint sometimes, and the choice of melodies. Anyway, *The Real Thing* is probably NOT an essential album in 2022, contrary to what a certain aging fanbase considers today... Number of albums left to review: 730 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 132 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 65 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 74 (including this one)

Not for me. 🤷

Red hot chilli peppers and rage against the machine come through on this one. It's okay

Found this really irritating - only listened to the first 6 or 7 tunes.

just don’t like 90s I don’t think, feels like watered down punk

They were better with surfer vocalist than with this showoffy shrieker. “Epic” is easily one of the most annoying songs of the ‘90s, but most of this whole thing is just lame and moronic, with “Falling to Pieces” and “Edge of the World” the least lame and moronic (though both are sullied by the overdone vocals). Is there some skilled playing? Sure, but mainly in the service of bombast and excess, such masturbatory bass-slapping, such RCHP-esque posturing, so many overplayed and overlong songs. Why does every band in this genre take itself so f-ing seriously, and think itself so bloody epic? One finds the confluence of rap-funk-rock and nu-metal to be the least salubrious musical trend since the birth of rock and roll. FNM were a lot more fun during the Bathe No More era (see “Anne’s Song,” e.g.). And serious points off for “inspiring” Korn, Limp Bizkit and the rest of that odious lot.

favourite song: underwater love least favourite song: surprise! youre dead! would probably really like this album if i was 13 years old and american. felt really confused sonically, sort of a jack of all trades master of none vibe. just not my thing at all. not completely unlistenable tho so 2 stars feels about right.

First track I liked was 'Falling to Pieces.' 'War Pigs' is obviously a classic. Overall did not enjoy this record. A bit rocky a bit punk, but I'm not even especially glad to have heard it. Will not be returning to this one.

high energy at least. kinda nice having acid rock in here.

A tiresome album that doesn’t know if it’s slick corporate label rock or trying to be underground grimy and edgy. If you can get past the winning lead vocals some (if you can hear them in the mix), there a splashy drums and laborious guitar solos. Bass is occasionally strong, however.

No so mine

Don't need it.

can see why they are on this list, but not a big fan of nu metal. quite theatrical, glam metal-y?, a little funky. feels like the type of mash-up you would expect at the end of the 80s, but this is all in retrospect of course. favorite track: epic

p606. 1989. 2 stars Average Aerosmith/Kiss wannabees with average songs play loud to try and cover up deficiencies and fail. The best song on this is a cover. Nothing to keep your attention here, move along. WTF is this doing on the list?

I liked this slightly more than most metal I've gotten on here, but I didn't really like it very much.

I guess this is an important album as it seems like a prototype for a lot of nu-metal bands that came in the mid-late 90’s. Not my cup of tea though.

Sabbath cover was decent.

Hårt men tråkigt

War pigs is pretty good but the raps were painful

mmmmm bit shouty but started promising

Obviously, they had their big hit song on this album. Other than that song this isn’t very good.

besides "Epic", meh

Plenty of artist came after Faith No More. Did they do it the best? Nah. Did they do something original? Yes. Did it inspire a lot of great and crappy bands? Yep. Rage Against the Machine, Limp Bizkit, etc. I wouldn't say that I fully enjoyed the album. Plenty of eye rolls but they were talented and doing something different. That's admirable. Enjoyable all the way through? Not so much. Admirable? Yep.

I just don't like his voice

A more annoying version of RHCP

Men samtidigt.

The album was OK. However it was riff bound and sounded like so many other bands.

its alright i suppose. probably never going to listen to this album ever again as i'm neither mainland european or dave.

An unattractive car crash. A plate of mince meat covered in parsley being pecked at by a murder of ill-looking crows. A drousy zebra stumbling into a pit of broken coat hangers. A minor Star Wars character whom Disney have fleshed out and ruined. A pint of beer with a camel's dick in it. A lazy weekend interrupted by a trip to hospital to visit your dying daughter.

Faith No More is such a generic rock band. I do not find any sort of edge or originality to them. The best track on this album is the cover of War Pigs, and that's because it reminds me of a better band.

You want it all, but you can have it... Oh yes, the controversial video with the fish flopping around at the end.

Yeah I was not into this at all, got really tiresome by the end.

Sometimes too heavy for Henk

Edge of the World mi je najdraža, ako moram birati za ovaj album.

Izolacija dan 1. PETAK NAVEČER SLUŠAM JEBENI FAITH NO MORE JEBEM SI BOGA. Taj neki funk dio mi ga izvlači, ko da slušam rani RHCP i to prolazi, al ostalo jebiga ne paše.

Another misguided 80s mishmash of genres, this time between something approximating heavy metal and of course cheesy, blaring synths. There are some salvageable tracks on here, but throwing aggravating vocals into the mix means there’s little enjoyment to get out of this LP.

Mike Patton is on record saying that he shakes his bottom better than Anthony Kiedis. True or not, he’d have done better if he could sing better than AK. One theory is that this is low on the evolution chain that runs from swamp dwelling to Nu Metal. A competing theory posits that this is pretty far along the chain - just that the genre didn’t go very far. Epic is still fun. Thy said, it’s weird listening to albums like this, a generation after deciding not to spend my pocket money on a whim and the influence of a hot single. Thank goodness for common sense.

Not my preferred style of music, I did listen to the album and found that I just couldn’t get into it. Overtones of beastie boys within a few of the songs that didn’t help the music at all. Not one I would listen to again

Vocalist sounds like Spongebob

‘Combining thrash metal, funk, hip hop, rap metal, progressive rock, synthpop, carousel music and hard rock.’ Something for everyone apart from music lovers.

I remember listening to this all the time when it came out. Epic was great. Listening to it now. I don't remember any of the songs, except Epic. It's good for the type of music. Epic songs: Epic :) Other good songs; Falling to Pieces 2/5

Not sure if this is my thing - or if I just missed the boat back when it came out & I was listening to more heavy music!

This didn't really do anything for me- yes, there were some decent riffs. Yes, the tempo was high and the energy was there and the musicianship was strong. It just left me cold. Rock by the numbers with a bit of white rap awkwardly thrown in (rarely felt the two mix well). The vocals weren't for me at all, either coming off as weedy and nasal or a cringe-inducing metal "roar" against the instrumentals. While the music was catchy enough (including my favourite on offer here, "Falling to Pieces") I didn't feel any emotion from it- none of the lyrics particularly leapt out either. There wasn't much variety across the songs either on first listen- big reverb soaked drums, overdriven trebly bass riffs and chugging guitar under a synth lead with vocals barked or whined out. While we're at it, I've never understood cover songs played note for note with no re-interpretation or imagining. It's such a bland, safe move, and hearing War Pigs just makes me want to seek out Sabbath's original. Won't be going back to this one, sorry boys. If this is the real thing, I'd hate to see the fakers.

kinda lame. Just sounds like cheesy nu-metal, which I can enjoy sometimes but it's not interesting enough to pull it off

Really, really didn't age well. Oh well, 10 year old me will always love it.

I liked this album when I was younger but it's definitely aged a bit poorly.

I'm a huge fan of Mike Patton and projects like Mr. Bungle and Fantomas. I had heard "Epic" from this album before, but not too many Faith No More songs. This album wasn't bad, but just didn't grab me. Well-crafted funk / rock. Bass sound is killer. Favorite song: Woodpecker from Mars

Not my thing. 4/10

Top 3 1. (1) From Out of Nowhere 2. (10) War Pigs 3. (2) Epic

Fine? Faith no More seems to work best when they're not taking themselves too seriously

The album had interesting rhythms and sounds that worked well and held my attention. However, the entire album has a bit of a cohesion problem (as well as the songs) wherein the tone shifts a lot throughout. In addition, the mix in most songs feels flat and stale; these two problems really bring the whole album down. Ironically, the bonus tracks are the best parts about it. Favorite track: War Pigs

It was okay.

Liked some songs but overall not really for me
