Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Well there's a few things that come to mind with this. The first is "Wow, this reminds me of the GTA soundtrack", despite none of the songs from this album being on any of the GTA soundtracks. I guess it does establish their style, though, because their 1992 track "midlife crisis" is indeed on the GTA San Andreas soundtrack. Another couple of things popped into my head while listening. First up was the thought of how much these guys reminded me of Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Turns out that there's a fairly longstanding rivalry between the bands. Fun. Lastly, wow, this is kinda like Numetal a decade before Numetal. The cover of War Pigs is a bit pointless. No flair, no interpretation - just a straight "let's make it as close as we possibly can" cover. Kinda glad I heard this, but it doesn't change my world.
Fun listen but not something I would normally listen to
It held up better than I thought it would have. Kat time I listened to this was probably 1992
Only remembered a couple of their hits but the album was solid. Great cover of ‘War Pigs’
3.5
Idk man
Not my favourite album Mike Patton has worked on (which, considering his portfolio, doesn’t really say that much). I have much respect for his vocal abilities but the singing voice he employs on this album is mostly just annoying. Otherwise, besides the cheap keyboard sound, the music is enjoyable.
Unohdin arvioida mutta oli semmoista perus hyvää faith no more rockia mite se onkin
Less than the sum of its parts. The bassist and singer go off. The rest of the band is good. The music is tight, it's interesting and new every song, but this still didn't click for me. I respect anyone who rated it high but my cap for this is a 3.
Not the worst thing I've listened to. It was decent.
Bit of a mess.
As soft metal (leaden perhaps?) goes, it's not too bad. There are a couple of good tracks, but it's not really my thing.
I'd listened to this again recently. I remember thinking that the opening few tracks are great, gets me in a rock mood. Then it gradually goes downhill after that. Even War Pigs couldn't recover it for me.
Metal with a bit of a funk vibe (but not in a abhorrent RHCP way!) Front loaded with big tunes. The lead singer does sing down his nose a bit. I quite like.
meh
:00
Only knew of Epic from this album, enjoying it so far. The real thing is a good song. Would have to give this album another listen
2.5+/5
Epic is a great song. I'd never heard anything else by them - at least not that I can recall. They are definitely a "jack of all trades" kinda band. Some funk, new wave, rock, hip hop, metal - all fused into one. Listening to it, I started to think, "well, they just kinda copied all the sounds of other 80s bands and threw them all together" - they didn't really invent any of these sounds. However, they were the only ones (that I can think of) combining them in this way. And, having finished the album, I can see how they fueled some of the bands that would be come popular in the 90s - Linkin Park, Chili Peppers, Limp Bizkit, etc. There are echoes of this album in those bands for sure. So, credit where credit is due.
It's quite broad in styles.
Metal alternativo.
I didn't hate it, but I doubt it will go on my playlist. The musicians are tight, but Mike Patton's voice is irritating. The production value is typical late 80's and 90's power pop/rap. Overall, meh.
Was only familiar with Epic, surprised that its an outlier on the album sound wise. Woodpeckers from Mars I really like as a soundscape, and Zombie Eaters might be the standout track. Is the keyboard player using a Hammond B3 on at least some of the tracks, sounds like it? Bonus points for that. Does get a little same-y, 3/5.
I'm surprised 'Angel Dust' isn't on the list as well because I prefer it to 'The Real Thing', but I also prefer Mr Bungle to Faith No More (but the old Bungle, not whatever they want to call this new Bungle). I was shocked to see that 'Epic' has significantly more streams that the rest of the album put together, not the best song on the record. It's alright, not as good as I remember. 3 / 5 stars.
Solid album. The cover of war pigs was very interesting.
Not my music
Released in 1989, this album blends heavy metal, funk, and hip-hop into a unique sound that is both aggressive and melodic. The album opens with the track "From Out of Nowhere," which features driving guitars, powerful drums, and lead singer Mike Patton's unique vocal style. The album's most well-known track, "Epic," follows, with its iconic bassline and catchy chorus that has become a little bit of a staple of '90s rock. The song ”Falling to Pieces” is a perfect example of the band's ability to mix genres and create something entirely new and exciting. Its unique sound and genre-defying approach makes it a very fun listen and I recommend it for anyone interested in the history of alternative music.
Soort van Sushi: rauw en koud, maar af en toe best wel lekker!
Tof!
Ion fuck with it
Almost a 2 for some of the stuff that really didn’t do it for me, but overall it was ok.
The guy had a really annoying voice a lot of the time, but when it was good, fair play, it was really good
3 I really didn’t expect this to have the kind of versatility it does. I’ve always known Faith No More as a funk/rap metal group, but right off the bat, From Out of Nowhere was a hair metal-sounding banger that sounded like it could have come from a Mötley Crüe album. That’s followed by the classic FNM sound we all know and some love on Epic, which I have always thought is a great tune, though in this particular listening I really noticed the parallels with Red Hot Chili Peppers on the verses. Supposedly Anthony Kiedis accused the guy of ripping off his style when the music video came out, and I can definitely see where he’s coming from. I will say though, when comparing Epic to the track prior, it really showcases the vocal range Mike Patton has and Anthony Kiedis does not. RHCP also began shifting their sound away from that funk style immediately after this release with their next album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, so maybe FNM scared them out of the game ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The genre-shifting continued with Falling to Pieces, which was practically a piece of 80s pop rock and wouldn’t feel out of place being played on mainstream radio alongside artists like Bon Jovi or Journey… only for the album to then make a hard shift to a straight up metal song in Surprise! You’re Dead! At this point in my listening I was really impressed by how varied it was, but unfortunately, the creativity seems to wane from there and sometime around the title track I feel like you’ve gotten everything you need out of the album. I was excited to hear their take on War Pigs but it more or less sounds identical to the original but with Mike Patton. Solid first half, weak back half - Might give a few songs a re-listen. Still probably among the best in the rap metal genre, but that’s a low bar.
One of my favourite albums going into adolescence. Although the explicit details of Underwater Love make it an unmistakable retelling of Narcissus, I can’t ascribe deep philosophical themes to Patton’s original stories. While I could interpret ‘Zombie Eaters’ as some kind of metaphor for trauma bonding relationships, Patton’s whine betrays this angle and reveals it to be merely about an evil baby (while I seemed satisfied to accept that as good content at 14, not so much now). There’s great thrill in most of the music here, especially the title track and Epic (which made ears perk up and head nod when I heard it at a bar a couple of months ago) better funk and rhythm than Red Hot Chilli Peppers certainly and the fact the guitar doesn’t go overboard with solos and the shredding serves the songs is gratifying. The last track is odious for obvious reasons. A very good album for, and I hate to use this qualifier, it’s genre. Listen to Angel Dust instead; it’s a great album, no qualifier.
Rating: 6/10
Didn’t get much time with this one. First impressions: as at the time, I like the overall sound but the songs somehow disappoint and the singer can be really annoying. I’d say 2.5 stars but feel I should give the benefit of the doubt.
I was only familiar with Epic / The Morning After because that single was regularly on my jukebox. The band is extremely tight. Patton is a terrific frontman. The whole album stands up well after 35 years. It certainly rocks.
Didn’t really know what to expect here, I had only listened to Epic previously. Tough one to rate, it’s definitely genre bending for it’s time so you gotta respect that, I did like a few tracks quite a bit, primarily Woodpecker From Mars and From out of Nowhere. The cover of War Pigs was pretty good but pretty safe. Found Pattons vocals a little grating at times but not all the time. On The Morning After you can really hear his influence on Brandon Boyd from Incubus. Really interesting listen, gonna give it a 3
i think its a little corny but cute. very of its time the vocalisations are really annoying sorry. like this guy can't just stay in his normal singing range and not do that stupid baby voice? the instrumentals are good tho
A couple of the songs sounded familiar. A couple of the songs reminded me of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Overall a pretty good album.
The contrast between War Pigs and their self-written material is quite stark.
Like a mix of the RHCP and Nu metal, not really my cup of tea but impressive it came out in the 80’s given it clearly had a lot on influence on late 90s early 00’s nu metal. So deserves its place on the list.
Not too bad
Didn’t realize this was the band that did epic, obvi a great song. I’m a big rock guy so I liked it but it wasn’t amazing. Glad I listened tho!
Fairly average. Not my scene but it might be yours!
Both soft and hard rock
I'm not a fan of the genre, but I found myself enjoying a few songs. I think it's a decent album as far as screaming things into a mic goes.
Fine
I love the opening - hard to think of a more abrupt kick in the ass than "From Out of Nowhere". And Patton just has an amazing voice. The first three songs are great, but this album loses steam in the middle. I do really like the cover of Sabbath at the end though, that's a 5/5 cover.
Always good for some laughs
vibe is very cutting edge soundtrack (aka one of the greatest cinematic achievements)
Epic... Sort of
Pretty good stuff
This album is just Epic … and other songs are Ok
I wasn't sure what to expect. This was okay. Not a ton stuck out to me from this album. I wonder if I'd like some of Mike Patton's other projects more. This wasn't bad, but, again, didn't stand out to me much. My favourite songs were Falling to Pieces and Edge of the World.
Metal alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.
Some good stuff in here but some tracks sound like fillers to me
Prefs: From Out of Nowhere, Epic, The Real Thing, Woodpecker from Mars Moins pref: Falling to Pieces
This was at the intersection of an interesting Venn diagram of music. I really appreciated that.
meh. Epic is great though
Not really a fan. This almost sounds like the band is trying too hard? Difficult to put into words. None of the songs were really catchy. 5/10.
Some nice rock n roll
Liked it when it came out
some good, some bad, very corny
Not a big fan of this, though it is alright in small doses. Despite what I read a lot, this is far from Metal. It's Rock with a trying-too-hard-90s-edge, and ingredients from other genres sprinkled in. Not terrible, not great. 3/5
Tää levy on vaikee arvostella. Tavallaan tykkään paljon mutta jotenkin tää on enemmän sellasta nostalgista tykkäämistä sen sijaan että tää kuulostais raikkaalta. Annetaan vaikka vahva kolmonen. Hyvää kokeellista rokkii pääosin, mutta osa biiseistä kyllä ihan turhia. 3/5
Näiden seuraava levy Angel Dust on varmaan tän genren parasta antia. Tää taas aika keskiverto. Mutta pysyy jotenkin tykättävänä kuitenkin alusta loppuun.
Monipuolinen ja War Pigs on kova stygä!
Listened to Faith No More back when I was into the Chili Peppers briefly. They had a similar sound and I regarded FNM, a poor-man's RHCP. Listening so many years later doesn't make me like them better, but can appreciate they are much more than a Chili Peppers knockoff. There are some good songs here and had to check to make sure I was still listening to the same album when they played their Black Sabbath cover. Well done! I know this band was great live and they transfer a lot of that energy to their albums. No a bad listen.
Epic is a really fun tune that was a hit way back when. Many of the rest of the songs sound like the band is about to break into Epic, so they were certainly thinking in a certain way when they wrote this album. Most of the album was pretty cool, but the last two tracks were the surprise worth waiting for: a note for note perfect cover of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs, and then a completely different sound altogether - a swinging, jazzy piece that doesn’t match anything else on the record. In all, a cool sound with a few surprises.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Surprise! You're Dead! (4) 2 - Epic (2) 3 - Zombie Eaters (5)
Enjoyed some of it!
I'd like to give it 3 1/2 but can't.
Didn't hear that much of the different influences
good album need to finish.
enjoyed the heavy bass, rap sound
After hearing the first song I thought not this shit again but then they started rapping in epic and that was indeed epic, overall a fun listen.
Fine but not anything too special
A pretty fun album that's years ahead of its time, not really my thing but I hugely appreciate the ingenuity here as well as the unhinged performances by Patton
While I can appreciate what they are doing, it isn't my cup of tea. Stopped listening.
war pigs. and, yeah, this was fun.
Mike Patton's elastic vocals are obviously all over this - well there's no other way to put it - precursor to nu-metal. The obvious problem was, no nu-metal acts were as talented as this bunch of weirdos. Best Tracks: Epic; Falling To Pieces; The Real Thing
Mi sembra un disco che cerca di posizionarsi tra due o più generi: non è malvagio, ma non è niente di particolare. Molto bella 'War Pigs'
Love the drums
A great thrash metal fusion album that melds a multitude of genres. The diversity of the members of the band really help make it a cohesive release. It's one of those records that helped show the world that metal didn't have to be just a one dimensional thing. It's interesting to see that there were many comparisons between Faith No More and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, not something that I would have associated with initially, but upon listening - the comparison seems a little stretched. Best: Epic Worst: Zombie Eaters
Clearly talented and has some fun moments, but Faith No More always felt a bit hollow to me... like it's almost there but stopped before finishing the race. Definitely some memories listening to a few of these though.
I am guilty of not expanding my listening habits of Faith No More past ‘Epic’, a song that a fuckin’ love. That chorus is catchy and has a cool contrast to the verse. The rest of album definitely matched the vibe but overall it felt a bit lengthy. Sick ‘War Pigs’ Cover.
Pretty good though I feel as though it suffers from the same instrumentals on each song besides a few that had their own distinct sounds.
Good, and with a couple of really well known (and really good) tracks, but patchy and inconsistent later on. The Black Sabbath cover and the instrumental seem pretty unnecessary, perhaps even self-indulgent
Epic is Epic, always has been...and the whole mess of styles going on here are interesting but my first hand knowledge of Faith No More comes from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey...so you know...not the greatest sounding board for them here...
Epv spoko, reszta nic specjalnego. Cover war pigs bez potrzeby,
A decent album, but not worth a re-listen. Patton's voice wears on you.
This is decent - the start of the album is great, and the guy's voice is great for this kind of music, sounds like the lovechild of Jon Bon Jovi and Axel Rose. But, it goes a bit downhill after the first four tracks to be honest. Gets a bit too long, drawn out, and self indulgent in places and doesn't quite have the same pizazz as the first section.
meh
Epic e jo ganske epic, men blei litt for nasalt for meg i lengden
Pretty good
As expected. Some regognisable and half decent songs but nothing to hugely catch my eye.
This band is known but I didn't listen to it because it's not my style. There's a version of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" that's not bad.
It was a good listen but was lacking a spark. It doesn't help that it's dated as hell, especially their cover of War Pigs. That being said, still enjoyed it, just felt middle in the road.
This was an enjoyable album with a lot to listen for. I liked the bass line on most of the tracks and thought that it sat fairly well in the mix. I could see myself listening to some of the tracks again and possibly giving the album as a whole a second listen at some point and possibly boosting its rating.
Epic is a great song and I enjoyed the cover of War Pigs. Didn't really need any of the rest of it but it wasn't bad.
This album does a neat thing of bridging the sound of 80s hair bands and early 90s grunge. Nothing blew me away but Epic is a great song and I overall liked the album.
Best Song: From Out of Nowhere. I really like the unconventional, somewhat whiny voice in this style of rock. A nice kickoff to the album. Worst Song: Epic. Truthfully, it might just be because this was the only song that I had heard before, so the others were improved by the novelty. Overall: Like a palatable Smashing Pumpkins, or a less interesting Porcupine Tree. Little bit grunge, little bit rock, and even coming close to the precipice of a rap-style delivery. Likely not something I would seek out to listen to again, but relatively interesting for a first spin.
They made a huge splash and even though my roommate and I had the album, we hardly ever listened to it. Mainstreaming thrash guitar, and a metallic bass, they apparently had a great deal of influence with their later albums on System of a Down and the like. And probably introduced a whole new generation to Black Sabbath with their cover of War Pigs, which is a mitzvah.
Has the song epic. Pretty good album
Good stuff
Couple songs fit for "Now That's What I Call Music! Vol. 1"
I'd never heard anything other than Epic. Sounds a little bit like an alternative band dipping their toes in nu metal. Sneaky good War Pigs cover. Not something I'll listen to again and again, but kind of a fun listen that takes me back to the early 90s.
Epic is a good song, but most of this album is kinda mediocre to me. This was released the year I graduated HS.
I...I really like this. This album has shredding metal guitar, killer rhythm, genre bending tracks, dark humor, and sweet rock vocals. Falling to Pieces is a blast. I'm not crazy about the thrash stuff like Surprise! You're Dead, but I like the typical hair metal stuff.
Black Sabbath cover, War Pigs, best thing about this record
Loved the War Pigs cover. Can't take or leave the rest
listened to again still kinda boring
The beginning of the album is great, later it’s too much of the same sound for me. But overall a good album. Favourite songs: - From out of nowhere - Epic - Woodpecker from Mars
Don't you worry... I'm gonna give this a 3. Stop Messing with my comments Dave. Of course I am going to give it a 3. LoL
I love you, Mike, but shut the fuck up please. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. There’s some awesomeness in this album, as well as some suck.
I enjoyed it- I was never into this at the time. It's dated but great fun. I can't imagine how many bands they influenced.
Nothing impressive, but better than I expected.
Älskar ju Mike Patton, men alltid tyckt hans andra projekt varit bättre (specifikt Mr Bungle), FNM är så mycket bara chuggachugga? Men Epic är ju en jävla hit. Jättebra War Pigs-cover? Stark 3:a. 7/10.
Oh it's a rock band. Not what I was expecting at all. Some decent funky bass and probably decent commercial sales. Next.
Didn't really pay much attention to it as I was listening. Decent enough.
good band but nothing that Id like so much
Nice, and enjoyed more than I was expecting!
Idiots in my high school liked this album when it came out. Just listen to Mr. Bungle, which is far more interesting.
War Pigs took me ALL THE WAY BACK to the Guitar Hero obsessed days 😬. Enjoyed it overall!
Fake Red Hot Chilli Peppers, pretty good my kind of rock 3.5/5
Solid, but not really my thing no more
Nostalgic
Kind of a blood pumper...
Kind of cool, not really my thing
Not a patch on Mr. Bungle. Some of it was fine, but ergh, some of it was so Guns 'n' Roses I almost vomited.
This album was groundbreaking for it's blend of new alternative rock and the blend of metal; making it emblematic of the album. That being said, it is still limited by weaker supporting tracks outside of two lead singles and a Black Sabbath cover.
The Used stole these guys’ chord progressions. Almost didn’t finish: Surprise! You’re Dead brought me back in.
File under : 89X
Meh, not my style. Wonder if this was where slap bass originated though, cause this sounds pioneering for the late 80s.
Yeah nah not really. Mike Patton is obviously a talented singer, I just don't really like the notes he chooses to sing over the band - and that nasally whine voice he often uses? Ugh. The songs are just of middling too, and the production hasn't aged very well.
For the most part, this just sounds like a generic rock album. The songs that stand out are "The morning after" and "Woodpecker from Mars."
Mike Patton näselt ganz schön und das Gerappe nervt. Musikalisch aber cool.
Fick för mig att Faith No more va syntpop. Blev förvånad
Take or leave for me
I’m unsure about this album! Not my fave but I did enjoy listening and enjoyed the mixture of styles which made it spicy and exciting.
Pretty meh, just a voice and some guitars really, all sounded the same, not necessarily bad but not excellent.
Enjoyed it, but doesn't resonate beyond the songs I know. Looking for Mixolydian modes throughout.
Feels more modern than 1989. Wonder if this style is a noted stepping stone from 80 to 90s rock
I was not particularly a fan of this style of music at the time it came out, and it hasn't really grown on me since then. It's a quite good album as these things go, though, and clearly marks an important moment in rock/metal. Musically the band is really solid. It's a departure from most metal of the era, with some excellent guitar work and a prominent, funky bass. Never enjoyed Mike Patton's vocal style, which probably launched more than few crap 90s/00s vocalists. The cover of "War Pigs" is great, although it's a little too on the nose to be taken as much more than an extraordinarily faithful copy of a much better band. On balance, I would still give this album a 3. Fave Songs: Woodpecker from Mars, Falling to Pieces, Epic, War Pigs
What can I say about this album? It is unique. As a Mr. Bungle fan, I love the fresh take Mike Patton brings to the table. There just wasn't another band doing all the things that Faith No More was doing on this album. The album oscillates from wispy Dream Theater prog to irreverent Gwar metal to west coast Beastie Boys hip-hop punk. It was ahead of its time, bending genres and setting the bar for what could be done. That said, it's not for me personally. If you're going to go weird, go all the way like Bungle did - I just can't get a firm handle on what this album is trying to do or say. Maybe it does TOO much.
3.5*. Hasn't grown on me yet.
Interesting to hear early crossover, understand the association with the Chili Peppers.
Such a great start, amazing guitar production, but it quickly falls from grace…the voice gets annoying and the songs lose any concept.
Decent album with one famous song (Epic). Stylistically all over the place, which isn't a bad thing but ultimately not enough to warrant a 4
2nd listen. 3/5
Noisy fun, a little mixed up at times, with shouty rap, gentler tones and hard rock competing from song to song, and sometimes within each song. Production of instrumentation is strong, but vocals are a little prominent for my taste.
More interesting than I expected from just knowing Epic & War Pig. Will probably listen again! Fav new track: Edge of the World
Meh, although groovy, it lacks the fatness and energy of more fortunate (in my opinion) records within the same genre. The mix becomes too sparse to my taste when the guitar is turned down – probably due to heavy metal influences with massive low-mid guitars and screamish vocals.
Epic gets a 5 and the rest of the album gets -2
WHAT.IS.IT
Obviously, Epic is bloody Epic. I wish there was a 3.5 on this scale. It's a good angsty rock album. It could have pushed a 4 had there been more standout tracks, but it was a struggle to pick the rest of the content apart.
Surprise! You're dead Woodpecker from mars War pigs
Mike Patton is a talented rock singer and certainly the most interesting and unique in rock since Robert Smith. He steals a lot of the show here, especially on "Zombie Eaters" and the cover of Sabbath's "War Pigs". However, track 4 "Surprise! You're Dead!" sounds like a very good quasi-new metal modern rock band from 1999. (6/10) Favourite Tracks: Epic, Edge of the World
Not at all what I was expecting and actually super enjoyable. I think people that like Glassjaw like this band. Where the fuck have I been? Surprise You’re Dead was kinda lame but otherwise I kind of enjoyed listening to this.
Seemed like a interesting mix of genres but not what I’m in the mood for today so only really half listened
Really good, would probably listen to this again.
Sin más
I feel like most metal music falls into the trap of inflated self-importance purely because it's metal, so my problem with most metal albums are that the artists are so complacent that they forget to make interesting music. This album definitely feels like that in parts, but at least there are some redeeming musical qualities throughout. Epic is still a classic too. 6
it was good when no one was singing
- atrocious rap - not sad that the nasal style of singing isn't a trend anymore - great guitars and synths, strong musical energy
Reminds me on Tony Hawks 2 Wasn't a huge fan of the whole album but I did love track 10
Done.
It's kind of a classic 90's album for me. This is the kind of music that I would listen to with my dad in the car when I was a kid, so it has a certain nostalgia factor to it. Same with The Offspring as well as some RATM. That being said, this one isn't my favorite. There are some quality bangers that go well with the Megadeth quality vocals that this album has to offer. Their version of War Pigs is kind of boring. Highlights: 1, and 2.
High energy throughout. Nothing to complain about, but nothing that grabbed me and kept me enthralled either.
Decent sound, amazing guitar work. The vocals kinda got annoying after a while tho.
Red hot chilli peppers kind of vibe in places, would give another go.
The album is interesting, it has a good beat and the lyrics are neat. I personally don't quite like the singer's voice, I find their voice a bit annoying.
It has a Jiu Jitsu song (Epic)!! The nostalgia factor automatically gives it +1 point for me. The audio mixing sounds kinda odd to me and I can't hear the singing as well as I would like, and it's a bit overwhelming. Underwater Love and Epic were my favorites.
Ra ra ra raaaa ra raaaa ra raaaa raaaaaaa
Solid vibes
Is curious. Not my style I think, but maybe I'll give it another listen
Liked a few songs... reminded me of Lynkin Park type songs
Angel Dust is way better
Better than I would have thought (I was worried it would be pretty dated). Surprisingly held up pretty well. Some fun funky/thrash/hard rock that harkens RHCP/AIC/Metallica
Imagine me, for a second, looking up this album and reading the genre on the tin: "Is...is that funk metal? Oh dear lord". Not my idea of a good time but alas, we're here for a reason. And sure as rain, it doesn't suck! I mean, kinda. Epic is strange...the verse is so lame but then the chorus hits and I'm like "Yooouuuu want it alll but you can't haaave it" cause it's great. It's an album that can have genuinely good songwriting when it wants to, but that's dependent on if they feel like white-boy rapping like RHCP or not. To boil it down to it's essentials, the Alt Metal parts are worth the listen, but the Funk Metal parts drag it down, averaging it out to just a "good" album. 3 stars!
Ahead of its time.
Lots of cool riffs here, I wanted to hate it but actually liked it.
I'd like this band much better with a different singer
It was p good. I liked War Pigs (obvi) and The Real Thing the most
the first punk record so far! actually its got a more stadium heavy/alt metal feel. great cover of war pigs. its just not really my jam, its just too close to bad religion without actually being bad religion. like the mass market version
Nice
3
It was OK.
Not really my vibe all that often but it's good for what it is.
Not a bad rock album.
Not great; not terrible
3.5
3-3.5.... this was really interesting. lots of sounds!
i liked it, although it's a bit too lengthy for my tastes but overall, fairly nice listen, casimir pulaski day is really fun to listen to
It's ok, I don't really like the sound of this type of music.
Just a bit dreary and ordinary really. Clearly influential. But not of anything I particularly like.
Definitely kept me on my toes. Some songs felt more rock, some metal, and then even some bluesy stuff on the last song. Not really my style but I didn't hate it
Did not hear anything great on this album. Not real familiar with 'Faith No More' and but I will say 'No More' works for me. 2-stars.
Mike Patton's awful, awful singing voice ruins what is otherwise a pretty good album.
I had very low expectations and this slightly exceeded them. Nu metal and anything adjacent is not really my jam, but this is better than other things in the genre
This album actively annoyed me at times
Too intense to be fun.
The Real Thing Epic is a great song and I like We Care A Lot, but outside that I’ve never been particularly curious about Faith No More. I’m not sure whether this really changes that feeling that much, as for the most part it doesn’t particularly move me much either way, even though they are slightly, but clearly, set apart from their peers as they bring in some non-typical metal/alt rock elements in some of the keyboards and strings and the Jane’s Addiction/RHCP adjacent funk influence. However they do still tend to churn out some rather staid, bog standard metal riffing a bit too often, particularly on something like Surprise! You’re Dead! Or Zombie Eaters, and I think they tend to rather From Out of Nowhere and Falling to Pieces both have great strings, and Falling into Pieces in particular is a very catchy bit of alt rock, probably the highlight outside of Epic. It's a bit more hit and miss after the opening three songs. Songs often start interestingly, before reverting to regulation heaving riffing; Zombie Eaters, The Real Thing and The Morning After. I like Woodpecker From Mars, it’s middle Eastern strings add a nice point of difference, and it has a kind of psychedelic-funk-metal vibe I quite enjoy. Overall, despite a couple of good songs, it’s just not really in my wheelhouse, and it doesn’t quite do enough with the interesting influences it does have to make me want to listen again. ✝️✝️ Playlist submission: Epic
I am very hesitant to use this word, but this is a bit cringe imo. The musicianship is there, on a technical level I’m impressed. But the singing and overly-dramatic instrumentation makes it all feel a bit cheap. “Epic” can have its props for being nu-metal before that was a thing. But by the time “Surprise! You’re Dead!” came around, I felt like I was watching a little child play pretend skeletons and monster truck wars. I suppose the chorus of “The Real Thing” wasn’t horrible, but the vocal intonations even in that track were hard to get through. 2/5
Somewhere in the alphabet soup between GNR and RHCP lies FNM. This album doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be – a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and the entire spice rack. And while I appreciate diversity on an album, I might be extra critical on a sound that’s not really floating my boat to begin with. Case and point: The piano outro on Epic – it’s nice on it’s own, but like… do we need that? Does it fit? Takes me out of the sweaty bro energy of the rest of the album. The tension and release on The Real Thing is a fun ride. I might listen to this track again. Some tracks feel firmly rooted in the newer sound of the 90s: Epic, The Real Thing | Others are throwback 80s anthems: Falling to Pieces I would be remiss if I didn’t address the extremely concerning skeezfest that is Edge of the World. Immediately I’m uncomfortable with the sultry come-hither, rocks on ice, energy that’s coming through my speakers – it feels dingy and slimy, and then you listen to the lyrics and HOLY HELL!! How in the fuck did this get approved for release? No one thought, “hey, maybe we could tone down the lyrics a smidge.” NOPE! They trudge full speed ahead into pedo-grooming -a-and-i-quote “little girl”, without even a whiff of satire at play. You can trust me, I’m no criminal / I’ll do anything for the little girlies Ew. It’s gross. I’m 110% out. AND, even without the lyrics, this song doesn’t fit the sound of the rest of the album or of Faith No More in general, so I am at a loss as to why they included it at all. Redditors will tell you Edge of the World is rife with satire and is a critique of dirty old men, but to my ear, it does not read that way… like at all. Am I dense? Maybe.
Felt the band Jack Black is a part of when he starts teaching in School of Rock. Sadly did not like the main vocalists voice so put me off. A bit too heavy rock for me. Some weren’t too back, liked the instrumentals in Woodpecker from Mars.
No thank you.
I've never been drawn to this band, although "Epic" is, unironically, pretty epic. The album is fine. It does combine a lot of different styles into something of its own. It's probably significant that one of the songs I like best, though, is "War Pigs," which is a Sabbath cover.
Too dangerously close to nu-metal for my liking. I don't like Patton's vocals at all. War Pigs by far the best track on here.
When to listen: feeling RHCP but want something different, which is almost never?! I liked the cover of War Pigs and the last song but the rest was just itchy scratchy music to me.
Is this metal? Punk? Grunge? Some awful precursor to Nu-Metal? It doesn't know and neither do I. War Pigs cover is cool because it has to be by law. 3/10
RHCP cover band tries to sing metal through their nose.
Twee and dull
a little too metal for my tastes
This is just a sub-average metal band, nothing to hear here, move along....
Really not for me and cannot stand the lead vocalist.
Nic moc pro me, ale jinak dobry
not for me
Faith No More, more like Album No Good. If you're part of the reason why rap rock exists you're part of the problem.
I did not like it 10 years ago, and i still don’t now
this rock metal album is good at best and painfully mediocre for the majority of the run of the album. i wish it was better, cause it sounds like it has the potential to be brilliant.
This is another average heavy metal album with rock influences. While I’m sure the vocals aren’t particularly special they certainly don’t elevate the album either. It’s nothing groundbreaking.
Noisy soft metal rap with shit vocals
It’s bad.
Interesting. Not really my kind of thing, but I recognized a few songs in there
No es de mi agrado este tipo de rock
Def not for me
This was okay but not something I would go back to. I liked the sound of edge of the world but I’ve just looked at the lyrics and um what.
Woof. I was starting to enjoy the opening track until the vocals came in and I became aware of the glam-nu-metal-rap business ahead. I still enjoyed most of the production and instrumentation, but the songwriting itself and singing performance give the game away. I acknowledge there are hooks and plenty of craftsmanship on display here, but this is emphatically not for me. I hate to say it but it holds up better when it hones in on a single genre. (Except hip hop, I’m sorry; this rapping is RHCP levels of rough.) Massively influential, for better or worse. I could clock its likely acolytes throughout my listen. Maybe you just had to be there. Enjoyed the bass work.
gibt nicht viel zu sagen, wenig aufregend
I didn't find this a terribly engaging or exciting album.
still giving this a 2 star rating. Not a bad album but it just does not resonate with me. Too jangly in all the wrong places
For ‘89, I can see why this was held in high regards. Definitely influenced a lot of Nu Metal. But this is pretty cringe and didn’t age well, imo. Enjoyed some tracks, but would not listen to the album in full multiple times.
2 - not for me
Faith no more er ekki Alice in Chains. Kannski ég muni það eftir þessa hlustun, þrjátíu og fjórum árum of seint. Nú er ég ekki metalmaður eða nu-, og þessi nefmælta raddbeiting er hrikaleg, en þarna eru stundum melodíur sem lyfta þessu í tæpan tvist.
I remember not being interested in this band when they came out and I am reminded why. I usually don't mind voices...but his voice is mildly irritating. That is about as much as I can say about this rather underwhelming and unmemorable album that i will never have any desire to listen to again. 2 stars
It’s not my sound. But if it is your sound it does seem like it came out ahead of its time for its sound
For album called *The Real Thing*, this sounds like a goof, gluing together asymmetrical chunks of metal, hip-hop, funk and symphonic rock for giggles and topping it off with some weird, nasally vocals that alternate between supposed-to-be-ironic (?) rapping and singing that sounds like a parody of hard rock vocal tropes. The bright spot in the middle of all of this is the work of keyboardist Roddy Bottum whose melodic sense and sharp playing provides the substance that keeps the disparate pieces on this record from completely falling apart. (Docked a point though for the excessive use of slap bass, which after a while was like a burr under the saddle.)
i coudln't go through entire piece it was a challenge not my vibe
Ok. Rick. Big. Out there. Soundtracky. Interesting. Oh man. His voice is annoying. An hour of this?? Really?? Like yeah. Ok. Sure. Epic reminds me of Rock Me Amadeus. Good song. Get more German pilled immediately. Me when I want it all but I can't have it. What is it man. Just kinda unremarkable and similar sounding tbh. Nothing special. Oooh my god I don't gaf. I'm sure there's a guy with a fedora out there who doesn't play about ts. Favourite: From Out Of Nowhere Least favourite: Surprise! You're Dead!/Zombie Eaters
I struggled with this one. I would probably give it 1 star if not for the “War Pigs” cover which is actually pretty good.
Never really got into this band. Epic and War Pigs are good songs but a whole album is a bit much
80s butt rock. The first song is good, the rest is a letdown. Would rate 2.5 but not feeling generous for this one.
Epic was the only half decent song they ever made...but it's not enough to save them.
I'm giving it a 2 because it is marginally better than all the garbage it spawned. I think I remember them not being awful back in San Francisco, but I'm not sure.
Zombie eaters is such a dreadful song I'm not sure the album can recover from it. It's difficult to tell if it's satire or just genuinely awful. Seemingly the birth of some absolute shit nu-metal.
Too bad little J vibes
There are a few highlights (Epic is entertaining nonsense) but it goes on a bit long and lacks consistency.
Didn’t realise that soft metal could be a genre. Seems like it has a bit of a personality crisis and doesn’t know if it wants to lean into a Run DMC/Aerosmith vibe, continue the legacy of Sabbeth et al, or add some more funk elements in the vein of Rsge Against the Machine. In the end it doesn’t really do any of them and so comes out lacking any defining features for me.
One of the best metal albums I’ve ever heard, 2/5
01) From Out of Nowhere - 6,5 02) Epic - 7,0 03) Falling to Pieces - 6,5 04) Surprise! You're Dead! - 5,5 05) Zombie Eaters - 6,0 06) The Real Thing - 5,0 07) Underwater Love - 5,5 08) The Morning After - 5,0 09) Woodpecker from Mars - 5,5 10) War Pigs - 6,0 11) Edge of the World - 5,5 TOTAL: 5,82 (58/100) Current ranking: 672/817
They get a catch a lot of hate for the bands that follow after. I don't think that's particularly fair or relevant. 1. That's not their fault. Just because they were a little ahead of the zeitgeist doesn't mean they should be blamed for all the bad songs that put mediocre rapping over guitars. 2. Yes there is a bunch of terrible nu-metal, but there is a lot of terrible music of all kinds. I don't blame De La Soul for Vanilla Ice. Still, I don't like it. The singers voice is not pleasant. The rapped parts are not catchy or clever. The music is Guns and Roses coded, but without Slash, so a bit disappointing. A few decent bits here and there, but not one I'll circle back to. 2 Stars
This album contains the bands most famous song, Epic. And a spectacular cover of Way Pigs. But otherwise is mostly forgettable.
I preferred their heavier tracks on this, there was too much experimenting going on which spoilt the listen for me
Самые популярные песни из альбома на удивление вообще не понравились, думала, что весь альбом будет мимо, но ближе к середине нашла для себя что-то близкое. Zombie Eaters, The Morning After
THey are good at what they do but I'm not a big fan.
I'm all for experimenting don't get me wrong it's great and when done right it's important to push the boundaries and create new experiences. However in my opinion the way this album merges heavy metal, funk, rap and at times like synth ballads is just a completely jarring experience. Maybe it's just me but the rapping in "epic" just felt so uncomfortable and unnatural. There was some good music but when you think about all the other stuff coming out at that time (I wanna be adored, Dolittle, 3 feet high and rising) it just falls flat a bit. I just found it overall too unsettling and just jarring to fully enjoy.
no 🫶🏻 (war pigs can stay)
Props to this band for bringing genre-blending into metal, being openly goofy and theatrical, and somehow still being a mainstream success, even normalizing the diversity of sound in a previously closed-off genre…and props for their mastery of their respective instruments (DAMN Mike Patton can play)…but UGGGGHHHH I can’t stand Mike’s nasal voice or painfully cringey rapping. Aziz Ansari, at his most intentionally annoying Tom Haverford moments, sounds exactly like Mike Patton. I have always, since the first time I heard it, hated “Epic,” and the rest of the album is not much better. Academically I get why it’s on the list, but I felt like I was being punished after a few songs, and toward the end of the album I was just so tired of it…then suddenly there’s a very good, and minimally nasal, “War Pigs” cover, which earns the album a second star from me. Ironically, Ozzy Osbourne is another nasal vocalist I’ve never been wild about (RIP, mad respect), but at least he didn’t rap. Ugh.
No diré mucho.
Not sure it’s my cup of tea. Some nicely written and performed songs, but it just did not grab me
fuck that tbh
Fun enough, but hate his voice. Kinda cringe.
This is #day501 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… Faith No More, much like Jane's Addiction, have always been a band I could never quite wrap my head around. Of course, I understand the influence and all that, but somehow this particular combination of vocals and music doesn't click for me. I'd rather put on some early RHCP instead (think Mother's Milk). This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day502.
If it hadn't been for these guys we wouldn't have had Limp Bizkit or Korn. What a terrible legacy. Whatever this is--nu metal, rap funk, alt arena rock--most of it falls flat. There are a few decent songs here and there like "Epic," the opening song "From Out of Nowhere," and, especially, the cover of "War Pigs" which wasn't even on the original album. They always seem like they're trying way too hard. The lyrics are, for the most part, nonsense including a screed against babies on "Zombie Eaters" and a song from a pedophile 's POV ("Edge of the World"). I have no idea why this album is seen as being very successful and influential.
Like Red Hot Chili Peppers, but worse, with a touch of Korn and Limp Bizkit. On the other hand, I guess they have some pretty profound lyrics. "So HUG me, and KISS me, then WIPE my BUTT and PISS me" in what seems to be a protest song against.. babies? This shit sucks so bad, maybe not musically the worst but I hate the main style they're going for here. The War Pigs cover is probably the highlight because its not their own
One for the ‘worse as it went on’ club.
good dad picks but less that 2 songs i’d listen to again
I never liked this record. And listening to it again after many years, I still never liked this record.
80s hair metal combined with occasional rapping. It didn't work for me, but hopefully it works for someone.
In didn't find anything about this album to stand out. It was kind of heavy metal, but didn't really scratch that itch.
Watered down rock with whiny vocals
A 2.
I'm pretty sure I've seen this album cover before, though I've no clue what genre of music it belongs to. I'm hedging my bets on something metal-related, if only for the typography, flame imagery and year of release. Metal. I enjoy relishing in my victories every once in a while. This is a pretty unique showing for the metal genre. A funky, rapping, metally kind of thing. Safe to say, this isn't my cup of tea, though I can appreciate the ambition. There's some decent instrumentation, and the vocals pack an admirable level of punch. "Epic" is Solid. The rapping during the verses is decent, though I must admit that the chorus greatly loses me. The guitars are, fittingly, quite gargantuan in their scope. I won't lie, I completely spaced out for the rest of this thing as I was tired and decided to go to bed midway through the album. I was gonna give this a second go from start to finish, but ehh. I'm not expecting to change my opinion on this anytime soon. Book time. Three big singles. Influential in the then-evolving nu metal genre. I can see this being a classic within it's genre. It's alright across the board and appears to have a decent level of influence, so I don't need to take a stroll over to Wikipedia. I cosign this inclusion.
I’m running out of ways to say an album sucks.
Preferred 'introduce yourself' to this and 'Angel dust'. But Epic is er, epic. The album starts off strong, but falls off quite quickly... Zombie eaters is a filler, the real thing is a filler, it's stuck in 2nd gear, never really gets going. Underwater, the morning after, the (6 minute instrumental) woodpecker from mars, edge of the world all have no redeeming features. Rest in peace Chuck Mosley.
5/10 Highlights Underwater Love
It goes through a range. I think some of the metal sounds a bit too standard in places and although war pig is good, is unnecessary as I'd always prefer to hear the original.
A little bit too much metal for me. Not my thing.
Nja, grungeaktig rock fra 90-tallet. Helt Ait. Sterk 2
cool album art
An album that feels like a precursor to a few different genres and eras, and the stepchild of a few others. A few things really held this album back for me. 1. The singer's voice. He sounds like a what a Muppet version of Tina Turner would sound like, if that Muppet were also a bird. I just couldn't not stand it. The texture and grit behind it works for some people. It really did not at all work for me. 2. It's too dramatic. Both the lyrical content and the arrangements. I just couldn't get with it. Everything felt like a big deal and I couldn't hang with that for a whole album. 3. The genre whiplash. One minute it's a fun, almost poppy rock song. The next it's heavy metal with some scream vocals. It's absolute whiplash and I couldn't do it. It works with other genre mixes (hip-hop and jazz, rock and funk, funk and soul, etc.) because they're closer and share more elements. The genres they chose to blend here (rock, metal, screamo, rap(?), and probably more) are dispirit enough that it just didn't work for me. Overall, this was an interesting but otherwise tiring and laborious listen and I really wasn't moved by much if anything. Two stars. Standout Track: From Out of Nowhere
First track is very energetic. The bass is great. Dominant drums aswell. Singing caught me of guard a little bit. Still figuring out if i like it. Second track Epic is kind of a metal rap tune. I'm going to say it now, so there will no surprises- I don't think it's the genre for me. Guitars sound good though, and I liked the piano outro. 5 songs in and I'm enjoying. Not suffering per se but not enjoying. So dramatic. The band is better than decent, but the singing style is tough for me. It might be someone's favorite thing. But I unfortunately can't follow this one. I really feel like there's something good content on here, but I can't get through the vocals. Too American. What we call nowadays- cringe. 9 is an instrumental which I hoped would be better. But replacing the embarrassing vocals, are some questionable keyboards. I don't think I'll continue for the 2 CD track. What can I say... I expected so much more from this. But it's just not for me. But more so, Even if it was for me, I don't find anything special or memorable about it. But maybe I am the problem. It's a flat disappointing 2.
Whiny butt wipes. Hahaha
Frenetic rock’n’roll doesn't’t do it for me. I did like Edge of the World.
The kickoff of bad 90s music. His voice really got old. Also, no xp for War Pigs cover to fill the album.
I liked their hit "epic", but didn't liked the voice or lyrics otherwise
considering i only know of this band through 'easy', this album came as quite a shock as the tracks are nothing like it. i found it quite cringey and annoying at times - i could see what they were going for (that rage against the machine type sound) but it didn't do it for me
"The Real Thing"? Eher ned. Sehr uswechselbars Rockgedünse wo weder id richtig krasse-abriss-Rock gaht no id gmüetlich-zum-lose-soft-rock. Und mit dere nasale stimm als hett er 20 jahr verstopfti Nase. Denn no versuecht chli dri-zrappe a la DJ Bobo? Denn no lieber de OG René Baumann. Zwei verschnützti Nastüechli
Ganz nachm ueli maurer mussi am morge sege: ha kei luscht
I didn’t mind Faith No More growing up. I didn’t know a lot of their stuff, except for the obvious tracks that anyone who has listened to mainstream rock radio would know. Having now listened to an album of theirs from start to finish, I can say that ‘The Real Thing’ is just fine. It's ok, it’s listenable, but it doesn’t really grab me how I hoped it would – There’s just nothing new here. 700+ days in, and albums like this don’t really pique my interest much anymore. Kind of reinforces why I never really had them on my radar or ever cared to delve into their catalogue. Apart from ‘Epic’ and ‘Falling To Pieces’ the most interesting thing on here is their cover of Sabbath’s War Pigs. Make of that what you will.
Conflicted on this one. A cool blend of styles and you can see the influence on later bands. Have always liked Mike Patton’s weirdness. The funky slap base was annoying though and a couple of the songs have not aged that well.
