Reviews (page 5 of 8)

It was just fine. 2.5/5 stars.

alright album

tidy rock album, not bad like

No está mal, me gustó la d woodpecker from mars y el piano d la última o penúltima canción ns no me acuerdo. Un poco olvidable el album tbh pero no es malo

Not my type of music, makes sense for the time- felt very teen angsty

Liked it a bit, just speaks of the early 90s. Kinda like what the chili peppers were doing around the same time, but a bit heavier

Surprise! You're Dead! Well this is fun. A nice album, but not something I'll come back to, so a 3.

Knew a couple of songs but that was it. A band I was never into so this is a first. Sort of refreshing mix of sounds. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? No Owned: No, 7/1001, 7/26 (26%) Will I get? No Recommend: Sure

Decent quasi metal band but not something I would be a repeat listener of. Much prefer Pearl Jam and other similar types of bands who fit into this genre.

Everyone knew this album and a few of the popular tracks at the time of release. "Epic" led the charge and I swear, if you listen to FM or XM radio for even a few hours a day, you will hear that song at some point, even today. 250M listens, it's a hit song. I think the reason this one stands out was that it was unique at the time, they created a sound of their own, odd but attractive. It fit in with grunge, it fit in with metal/hard rock, it had a pop quality, it includes elements of hip hop, it was truly a conglomeration of what was hot at the time. "What IS It"! "Epic" was huge but they had a minor hit with "Falling To Pieces" and their rendition of "War Pigs". I forgot about, but enjoyed, "Edge Of The World" & "The Morning After". Problem with the album is that too many of the songs sound like the song before it or after it. 3 stars for delivering a GIANT 90's hit song that everyone still knows - longevity is factored in, unique sound at the time, impact at the time, etc.

Not my thing

It was okay nothing special really :p

I like alternative metal, but this particular type not that much. It's not bad, but not great. I didn't like Patton's vocals much here, I feel like they work better in songs like "Evidence". Here, the rap-ish delivery doesn't do much for me, it feels a bit awkward and exaggerated. The basslines and guitars are interesting, but don't carry the record much. I particularly disliked the synths, they feel a bit too thin and canned. There are some heavy moments and some catchy choruses, but most of it was pretty average. "Epic" is pretty good, it's one of their most popular songs for a reason. "Surprise! You're Dead!" is also pretty good, they go pretty hard. I disliked their cover of "War Pigs", it doesn't go anywhere near the original and it was a huge risk to even try it. The other songs I didn't care much for. It's all a bit too rap-rock for me. It's around 2.5 stars.

Pretty down with it, but not so all the way down.

It’s a shame this was one of those bands that I knew the name but not the songs but I was decisively underwhelmed 3/5

Not so bad

Not too bad

The vocals grabbed me right away with a huge range and a lot of personality. The songs keep switching up their energy, with unexpected mood and tempo changes that made me want to keep listening. One track, “Surprise! You’re Dead!,” hit so hard I saved it instantly. The production feels layered and tight, with a lot more going on than just a rock band setup. Even though this style isn’t something I normally go for, there were plenty of moments that pulled me in and made it worth the listen.

Meh Normie-Metal.

Thought they were alright at the time and it still is. With the rhythm section the best part. Though this is the album that I lost interest in them, know he’s a better vocalist than chuck and this is a more coherent album, but think they went down a more mainstream route, both in the metal and the soft rock elements and ?rap here, and not that wired more individual sound and energy they previously had and when saw then in 88. 3 Star

Frontloaded with the three best songs. War Pigs cover slaps, as the kids would say.

Okayish

10 inferior versions of that one song everyone knows.

Maybe I’m feeling cynical atm. I think it was probably something I’d enjoy at a better time

Not really on the same level with Angel Dust, but still pretty fun and catchy. Can’t really say I’m into this band. There hasn’t been a song from them that was memorable for me, but overall this album is still pretty good. I like the guitar tone, I like the riffs, but nothing strikes me as all that special. It follows a formula, and the formula is pretty decent. It’s like nu metal but with less obnoxious vocals and lyrics. 7/10

pretty dope fun metal

ok so the first thing i noticed was that reallyyy strong guitar intro, and then came the almost squeaky voice (😭). it'll prob take me a while to get used to that, but i dont hate it. oooh i really like song 3.

Great in places

It's fine, felt like very standard late 90s rock wich makes its impressive that it came out in 89.

you know, Ozzy Osbourne passed away today, and i got this album. it has a War Pigs cover! how fitting. rest in peace to a legend though, wouldn't be shocked if we all got Black Sabbath albums tomorrow to commemorate. either way this album has gotta be the most normal thing Mike Patton was involved with. not a knock, per se, though. Epic is awesome for a hit in 1990 and the rest of it has a very forward thinking alt metal sound. some banger deep cuts too. Woodpecker From Mars goes dummy deserves to be one of the 1001? probably not over Angel Dust but it's good to have Mike Patton on here in some form. a Mr Bungle album should be on here I reckon too :eyes:

I thought I hated Faith No More, it turns out I think they’re okay! Ain’t life crazy?

Bit boring 😴

The most all over the shop, eclectic mix of genres since Houmous & Chutneys 49th studio album ‘Throw Enough (Sh*t) At The Wall’ they had to withdraw the album after pink Floyd thought it was a dig at them. They are so unbelievably self obsessed. 2.5 6/11 The Real Thing

Hey, this is proof that Faith No More has more than one song. "Epic" is the song everyone familiar with rock music knows, and has probably heard hundreds of times... but exposure/airplay for other tracks was virtually nil. They do blend styles into what is essentially a funk-rock sound. "Epic" is the standout track for a reason, but the rest of the album holds together decent enough as well.

Actually enjoyed this which probably means metal fans don’t consider it real metal. Love tbe basslines though

Pretty good but didn't like, really strike me or whatever

Solid rock, punk-rock.

I recognized a couple songs, like Epic, which has an early Red Hot Chili Peppers feel to it, though it's a little more metal. As for the rest, I like this a lot better than the one Faith No More Album I think I had back in the 90s--King for a Day.

I mean. It was good. Other than the vocals getting agitating.

its alright

It’s definitely a classic, but I much prefer hearing tracks in random order as opposed to the full album

I really hated this band because I thought Mike Patton was ripping off Anthony Keids. That sentence is true and embarrassing. Love and hate are to illogical emotions that don’t need to be justified. Also Epic was on MTV every 3 seconds. This does sound like early RHCP however. That rap in falling to pieces is straight up Funky Styly. One of those bands that the music and singer never meshed well to my ears. Very important band building the bridge from metal to alternative rock.

They get better - bit hokey but very fun

Some 80s rock with the synthesizer. Mike Patton is in a higher vocal range, more tenor. Kind of reminds me of primus. Love the instrumentals

Cover of War Pigs and the song "Epic" are solid!

I saw a Faith No More tribute band (Zombie Eaters) who nailed the sound just the night before I got this album. A real mix here. Epic - it really is epic and Falling to Pieces is great. Filler tracks are just a bit poorer - I think Angel Dust is a better all round album.

Their worst song is the most popular? Best Song: Zombie Eaters Rating: 6.5/10 (Good) Stars: 3/5

Not as ambitious as Angel Dust, pretty corny at times. Some solid metal music, liked what they were going for with the title track.

This album is very average. Some good tracks are cancelled out by some bad tracks, and you can see how Faith No More influenced Limp Bizkit, and the other one that was around at the same time. I think the album is pretty front loaded. Out of Nowhere and Epic are the big hitters, and the next two tracks are fine. The second half of the album is not so fine, although The Morning After is decent. The War Pigs cover is pretty much a carbon copy of the original, so what was the point? And the last track is too jazzy. It’s an average album and gets a bang average score.

Saw them in concert once. That was plenty. The Real Thing is a decent album, these guys should have been bigger than “epic” and the suffocating goldfish.

Tällaista nuoren miehen uhoa. Oli kyllä hauskasti otettu sanoituksissa rooleja. Pätevää soittamista myös, ja lauluhan kulkee hyvin. Biisitkin kuulostaa biiseiltä eikä tilutukselta. En kyllästynyt kuin hetkittäin, vaikka en hihkunut innosta. Vahva kaks.

I hope so. I'm sick of A.I.

6/10 - It was like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and some other bands thrown together. It kind of worked but not amazing

I know of Mike Patton (lead singer) because of Mr. Bungle which is a band that I like. So I've tried to listen to Faith No More before and I didn't especially like it. After giving this album a listen, I would say that I liked it more than I expected to. It has it's moments but not so much my thing. Also, cool cover but I still like the Black Sabbath original version of War Pigs better.

Epic lives up to its name. I consider this to be above average 80’s metal, but I’m also not really a huge metal fan. I imagine it would grow on me. 3.5 stars.

When their best song on here is a cover, an album can feel pretty average. Which this one did. Nothing I hated about it, it was just rock music that never really reached a level that made me want to rock out.

Really expected to not like this

Good album. Like the energy and the playing is good enough. Feel like this is in the list, solely due to “Epic”. 3/5 Might listen again

eh, they should be ashamed by the war pigs cover

Good record. Feels like a warm up for future albums that are wilder and more interesting.

good hard rock album. def wish i ran to this instead of leonard cohen

Funky 90s rock with a hopeless, or should I say faithless, singing vocal and a hip hop vocal that is just slightly better. The music itself is cool, but I can’t handle the vocals. The War Pigs cover is great.

About halfway through this album, I was thinking my review would be along the lines of "what if the Red Hot Chilli Peppers were bad?" But it really grew on me in the second half. The fusion of metal and funk is really cool, but I really dislike the singer's voice, so it's very hard to give this an overall rating.

I'll say I am fond of this album but not because of the sound of this music. It's a level of rock that is harder than my ears can tolerate and it is super masculine music, which I struggle to connect with. Yet there was something familiar (beyond the one song I actually knew--Epic), something that felt comforting, something je ne sais quoi and gemütlich. It sounded like my husband. I could, would, and have listened to and appreciated this style of music having shared life for the past 27 years. So if only for the nostalgia of having a sound personify the man I love, I dig it (but not quite to 4!).

WHINY VOICE

It was decent, I liked the mix of genres with the heavy metal, softer rock and hip hop, although the guys vocals maybe weren’t the best for hip hop but he does sound very metally like the dude from Helloween or something, although my favourite song was definitely the one without any vocals as heavy metal instrumentals are always good it seems (nothing against his vocals). The War pigs cover was also good although I prefer Ozzy’s vocals personally, falling to pieces and the morning after were my other favourites. Overall 6/10.

I enjoyed this. Could definitely see the influence of their sound in the 90s after them.

It's fine. Epic is an obvious jam. A bit silly. More range than I was expecting. Solid cover of War Pigs. Some cool riffage. I respect it but won't likely be coming back to it any time soon.

skemmtileg blanda af ýmsum stefnum og þungarokki. eru svipaðir pipurunum, bassaleikur, en útsetningar og tónsmíðarnar skrítnari. gef þessu aðra. 3,5.

Didn't click at first. Thought the vocals were awful. Then I watched a few music videos and something clicked once I could see there style. A bit unhinged, but made it more entertaining.

The release of The Real Thing by Faith No More is the moment most people became aware of RapCore. Is that a good thing? That depends on how much you like RapCore. Faith No More is definitely more palatable than what came later (I'm looking at you Linkin Park) and was more unique at the time. The only song on the album to become a real hit was Epic which is, well, epic. It helps that their songs have a real chorus, as opposed to only rapping, making it more palatable to a general audience. At the end of the day, Faith No More is like Rage Against the Machine with a lot less rage. It's more Angst About the Machine. Their subsequent albums never did achieve the same level of popularity as The Real Thing; They did, however, continue to have a loyal fan base for whom they produced albums into the 2020s. The Real Thing was their only real brush with widespread fame.

Le tengo mucho cariño a este disco, era más de lo mismo en esa época, pero se salía bastante del patrón. Tenía algunas en favorito como Epic y Falling to pieces y he añadido un par más: The real thing y Woodpecker from Mars. Creo que se merece más de 3 estrellas, pero esa nota refleja más la opinión general que puedo compartir de este álbum.

Just a lot of noise in the early tracks. Grew on me a bit in the later ones. "Woodpecker From Mars" is fun.

This one was certainly influential for a handful of bands. His voice kind of annoys me, but good listen.

Pretty good

Rock, solos, casi metal y un cierre muy jazzy

Listened to this a lot over the years. Great album.

The album was actually not bad at all but I really disliked the vocalist’s contrived nasal voice..he doesn’t have the most recognisable tone but he can sing! He doesn’t need to pinch his vocal cords that much when he wants to sound different? Music wise, not bad at all. Liked woodpecker from mars where he didn’t sing!

War pigs brought this album back a bit higher for me, but if you asked me what kind of music Faith No More makes… I would struggle to find an answer. Epic is a pretty famous song, but I generally had a hard time with this album. I’ll give it a three, but it’s a low three high two.

A solid metal/rock album. I feel like I’ve heard the song Epic somewhere?

There were times I was rocking out and there were times I could have sworn the band that made the Power Rangers theme song somehow had an album that made the list. Epic is a classic, The Real Thing is a great lesser-known hit, and the cover of War Pigs is solid. The rest of the album was either decently good or aged too poorly to be taken seriously for me. Another one right in the middle.

This album is kinda all over the place. After the first few songs I thought I was going to get really tired of their sound, but then they changed it up. I don't know if it was necessarily better, but it was different. I was more just confused by this album.

"Epic" is epic, rocks for the most part, but after a hard cover of "War Pigs" it ends on an almost jazzy loungey number in "Edge Of The World", It's then you realise the whole thing is a jumbled mess of contradictions and a better run order would have made it a lot more listenable

Haven’t given this band a thought in years. At some point I may have confused the band with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. “Ultra” sounded like a Pepper song to me.

This album’s rating is cursed by the fact that I’ve heard this album so many time since I’ve started listening to the albums on this list

There are few good tracks on here, and “Epic” is, well epic, but the rest is rather middling and sounds very dated.

Pretty good, nothing crazy.

The video for "Epic" put this band on the map, and they certainly got a lot of attention as a live act. I like the Doc Edgerton milk drop photo on the cover. That said, when the best thing on the record is probably the cover of "War Pigs" -- great choice -- I have a hard time giving it a high rating.

очень сильно ждал конца. "военные свиньи" - норм песня, все остальное не зашло.

Very diverse. The funk song was absolutely vile, some songs had cool instrumentals. Good on average

I saw Faith No More live at a festival during their reunion tour in 2009 and it was a really great show, but I can't really get into any of their albums.

These guys have range. From songs I don't like to songs I kind of like, to covers of songs I do like. Sometimes in searching for your sound you discover that the journey itself was the discovery. Not the case here. Figure out what you do and if what you do is Nu metal, try something else.

3 or 4 idk

Despite hearing Epic thousands of times in my life I've never listened to the album before yesterday. It is definitely of the time and not a bad experience. Maybe it's the lack of nostalgia but this doesn't feel as good or hit as hard as some of the other late 80's early 90's alt rock. WHAT IS IT

Good album but won't be revisiting.

Epic was played to death when it was released and I never really listen to the album but I wish I had it cause it’s good.

Strong album but seemed to lack staying power.

Didn't quite finish the album but this was great! Way different than I was expecting, pretty funky with some hip hop elements. Almost sounded like Chili Peppers at times. With the entire history of music at my fingertips, I'm not sure I'd listen to this again, but I should. A solid 3.5 - 3.75

I know 'Epic' and it's fine. The rest is similar. The album cover is nice; it reminds me of Green Day's Dookie. Lotta guitar and drums which isn't my vibe. Song called 'The Real Thing' on the album 'The Real Thing' with the lyric "the real thing" is very much my vibe. Feels more 90s than 80s to me, which is a compliment, but I still don't enjoy listening to it (too loud). I was surprised that I actually know 'War Pigs' too (presumably the Black Sabbath version). Feels like a 2.75 (I'll stop with the fractional ratings soon, I swear).

A fine listen but not my cup of tea.

I enjoyed this overall, but it didn't excite me.

really wanted to like this but it’s just okay. a cover song was my favorite on the record and that’s not a good sign!

I’ve always thought of them as a bit of a one hit wonder.

Pretty insane that this music was made already end of the 80's. I also hear the inspiration RHCP must have taken from them. All in all pretty cool, but this style has since been improved upon better by other bands

I can't help but think that Tool was inspired by some of this record. There is a direct line between The Real Thing and the sound of early Tool albums. This also has a hell of a cover for War Pigs too.

Pretty good alt rock. Kinda grungy metal sound with some bangers. 3/5

Not without merit, early RHCP but heavy. Rubbish vocals and tasty bass

i love rap's influence (im talking to you Epic) cool, even though i only listened to half the album and skipped the rest because i got the gist but could def see the influence on other bands 90s/2000s

3/5 interesting songs with a good beat

Pretty good and also really important for the formation of the nu metal, which isn’t the best genre, but was really big and also overhated. Alright I have nothing more to say

Solid.

"Epic" is an epic song but not enough of a draw for repeated listening to the whole album.

3.5 stars. Diverse alt-metal. Sounds a bit like Aerosmith at times ("Falling to Pieces"), other times heavier (title track). Standout is catchy "Epic", "Falling to Pieces". Dud was "Edge of the World" with it's creepy, pedo vibes.

Pretty heavy, I like Epic a lot (no wonder it's the most popular on the album!) Some songs are really good, maybe sound a bit similar to each other..? Other than that, some good beats and tunes, drums are great.

Didn’t listen to all of it but seemed oka

Yeah it was ace! Some fantastic songs on here. Very much of a time

So dated, so cringey, but better than I thought. If someone came in and I was listening to it, I'd probably die inside. Even the good parts are embarrassing

Everybody can probably find something they like here. But also something they really don't like... If we're talking pass/fail, this is a pass.

Epic is a great song and the only one I had heard from Faith No More before this. It has a few interesting songs with different genres as a base it feels like. It was great listening through the album but I don't think its something I will listen to again at the same time I wouldn't switch away if it turned up in a random playlist.

Tem suas músicas, e realmente parece um pouco com Red Hot, um funk com rap, algo diferente. Gostei de Epic e Woodpecker From Mars.

Other than War Pigs, I was unfamiliar with every other song. It was, basic. Personally I was just content. Underwhelming- no complaints, but no positive things to report either.

You do have to love Mike Patton. Some of his later work got more fun but Faith No More is a great introduction. It's not the best music but it's of the time, was fun and had good energy, and did something. Woodpecker from Mars is cool. This influenced a lot of crappy music

This is like if Guns and Roses met the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Not bad.

You could call Faith No More metal-adjacent or grunge-adjacent. I like to think of them as Pop Metal. I like the tracks wherein the singer raps, but after the first couple of songs the vocals began to grate.

Nothing special really. War Pigs cover just made me want to listen to Black Sabbath instead.

Yeah...its fine

Good late-80s-pre-grunge.

Day 18: The Real Thing - Faith No More. This album is a very fun metal-adjacent album, but is it an essential listen? I'd say otherwise. Metal music is my bias, so I definitely enjoyed this album very much. However, I really do not find it to be an essential listen, especially when you take some of the snubbed metal albums into consideration. Among the albums in "1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die", there is no TOOL, Dream Theater, solo Ozzy Osbourne, Dio, Death, Opeth, or Exodus. The list goes on. I'd find those artists to be significantly more essential for the selection of metal music in the album compilation than Faith No More. The Real Thing is a fun album with various fun songs. I enjoyed it very much, but it is nowhere near one of the best metal albums I have ever heard. I have an issue with the arbitrary selection of metal albums in the album compilation. At least Sepultura is on there twice. Personal Enjoyment: 5/5. How Much It Belongs Here: 2/5.

Was "Epic"

Is what it is.

I bet this made people "woah" in 1989. I always have respect for pioneers even I don't like them. This album is energetic and interesting but tries too hard that it becomes cringe at some points.

Great hard rock album and the slap bass was very unique. To me the songs sounded very alike

I’m not a metal guy, but I still enjoyed this. Should revisit later. Though, covering War Pigs is pretty dumb, it’s already perfect

Very 80’s hair band sound

The Real Thing is the third studio album by American rock band Faith No More, released on June 20, 1989. Fairly standard stuff that was coming out at the time. Bands were starting to experiment with more funk/hevy rock/metal sounds. Kinda along the lines of Jane's Addiction or early Chili Peppers. Only less good. One could definitely draw a direct line from this album to nu metal bands that would show up about ten years later.

A bit familiar. Not bad.

I enjoyed this album, it's a rocker. Thanks for sending it over.

Not bad, not my favorite metal album either though.

3 stars here, and Epic is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. In my older years I’ve come to pretty much dislike the proto rap/funk infused rock. Some tracks here are worth listening to, but you gotta sort through too much fluff and (kinda wankery) to find them.

The arrival of Mike Patton's impressive vocal range proved to be even better than the real thing for Faith No More and the emerging funk metal movement, though for me it's something I only really want in small doses.

Not Faith Hill, and not bad. Thought War Pigs was someone else and The Real Thing was good, too.

My Faith No More guys says, “First 3 songs are solid. Kinda falls off after that.” I’d change that to a solid first 4 songs. Now I know where rap metal came from.

A rocking good time and although their music can get too monotonous “Epic” is a classic anthem.

What a directional shift from hair and heavy metal to begin exploring what will become some of metal's biggest subgenres of the new age. Though I'm much more a fan of the fantasy and experimental aspects than the rap rock that inspired literally every member of Korn, it's a great listen when in the right place. It brings a surprising amount of balance

some decent alt metal

Epic Album

More fun than I thought

The few songs that go hard are solid, the rest are meh.

This over angel dust? Ok I love Mike Patton, am not the biggest FNM guy, and this isn’t their best album. I’ll give it a 3 to be nice to Mike

Epic is, well, epic. But the rest doesn’t really hold up.

I remember when this record came out. Not one of my favorite bands from the era, but time has made this one nostalgic.

Þetta fannst mér leiðinlegt. Epic er flott lag og War Pigs er nottla snilld en þeir eiga það ekki... 2.5.

Rating: 7/10 Creative mix of metal, funk, and hip-hop. Very unique and a few great songs but a lot of it did not fully click with me.

The basslines are fuckin' RAW, and (in my opinion) are the highlight of this whole album. Some cool tracks in here, notably the jam on "Woodpecker from Mars". Also I wasn't prepared for a fairly decent cover of "War Pigs" immediately following. I've heard "Epic" a million times, and while it is an amazing song, I can't help but feel like its impact is dampened a bit when listening to the full album. It kind of blends in to the other tracks.

Eclectic mix of metal styles, from radio-friendly hair metal, to heavy metal, to more thrashy songs to rap-metal reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Peppers. I don’t like the nasally, pinched-nose vocals the lead singer uses sometimes but other than that this was pretty enjoyable. The bonus cover of “War Pigs” was fun.

"Epic" is truly an... epic track that metal fans have been singing together for decades. I have so many fond memories of being younger and riding around in a borrowed car with my friends and blaring this track over the speakers. It's got such an eclectic and anthemic sound, and I've always found it as kind of an underground metal version of cultural influence like "Bohemian Rhapsody", but of course not nearly at that magnitude. You could walk around at a metal show and start singing the chorus and people around you would join in. Unfortunately the rest of the album is kind of forgettable and nothing is even in the same universe of excellence as "Epic". Mike Patton's voice might not be for everyone but he is such a talent that I implore anyone listening who doesn't know him to check out some of his other work- Mr. Bungle's "Pink Cigarette" (a favorite of mine) has him crooning a noir lounge ballad that is a stark contrast to the singing on this album and it is incredible. The music video is just as amazing and shows off his humor too. This album is a perfect 3/5 for this list. It is a pretty solid album without anything bad per se, but it also contains an incredibly well known song in the history of a genre. That song is so necessary for inclusion on this list that the whole album has to be included, and thus, a solid 3.

3+ too monotonous

I'm not a fan of metal so the funk and rap metal songs weren't my thing, but the album is diverse stylisically and I quite liked the rest of the album. It sounds like this band influenced the 90s nu metal bands a lot. Overall an ok listen.

It's okay. Reminded me of high school.

Tof rockalbum. Meer dan dat is het ook niet. Ben niet altijd fan van z'n stem. 3.2

My mom knows the drummers mom

Again, I like a lot of bands that these guys influenced, but not them. Woodpecker from Mars saved this from a 2. 3/5

didn't listen

I'd like Epic more if the chorus was longer. Surprise! You're Dead! was weird. Zombie Eaters was probably my favourite, followed by Woodpecker From Mars.

The vocals take a lot away for me

I recognized Epic and thought the war pigs cover was fun. Good enough altogether

First listen. Decent.

It's a good record. I just think I prefer Angel Dust over this one.

Not really my thing but it's decent. Epic is the worst track by far.

Some great tracks on this one, including the all-time Epic. A cool post-80s thrash metal sound, too.

I had faith no more in this record

I don't really know where to go with this one. Musically, it's not overly interesting. I am influenced by the previous reviews that hail it as the start of Nu Metal, but, I don't know what to do with that information either.

I thought these guys were a woman who sang hip hop / rnb, I was totally wrong! Instead they’re more like a poppy version of Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Not bad, but there’s better out there…

decent album had some good songs

Dated, heavy, groovy

Pretty good sound.

Quite good, actually. It sounds pretty dated, but it doesn’t sound like 80s music at all. I can see why it’s so influential. 3.5 stars.

I liked this but feel like I should like it even more. Maybe I'll listen again sometime.

Red Hot Metal Peppers.

Now we're talking. Had this on cassette when it came out. Don't think I can give a fair evaluation from prior life experiences. Lots of memories tied up with this album playing in the background. And playing loud in the foreground! It's really good.

My only problem with this album is that it feels as though it’s all over the place, mostly because it’s trying too much. That being said, it does deserve a place on this list and it’s influence cannot on later, more “iconic” bands cannot be disputed

I wanted to like this - interesting mix of styles and great musicianship, but it just didn’t click with me. Still very cool to hear though

Epic är ju en klassiker. Finns några schyssta spår till.

This album take a little journey. It starts really strong, then gets a bit heavy for my taste, then gets into some drawn out songs that peck at the strengths of “Epic”. It returns to the fun sound again at “Underwater Love”. Great cover of “War Pigs”. I think I’d pick through this album for a mixed playlist, but not an album I need for the collection. High 3

Är jag tacksam för allt bandet gjort och vilka som inspirerades av detta?Absolut! Tycker jag om det? Det är ok!

Floppy fish! I guess that's how many of us will always remember FNM... that, or their nod to the Commodores! Rating this album isn't as easy though. I guess there's a love-hate thing going on, and it's something that I've been noticing on one too many albums since starting this journey, and that is that there are too many songs that last just 30 seconds too long... even Epic So, 3 stars... but I enjoyed the listen... but 3 stars... Also, as a last thought, I was reading how many people seem to compare FNM to RHCP... and I don't get it. They have in common that both bands were around at the same time, and that neither bands was making the kind of music popular at that moment. RHCP, in the end, were more commercially successful, but I'd say that this has to do with better publicist most likely. John Frusciante is an amazing guitarist, but brother Martin sounds better, at least on this album, and in my humblest of opinions...

Sound listen.

mike patton so charming

Did Faith No More copy Red Hot Chili Peppers or did Red Hot Chili Peppers copy Faith No More? The world will never know… 6/10

3/5. My dislike of Epic was balanced out by a good War Pigs cover.

I was into thelonious monster. I appreciated what faith no more was doing. I couldn’t get into Mike Patton’s voice. I liked Chuck Mosley.

Happily surprised they made the list, although I wish it were a later album like Angel Dust. You can hear the potential on this one but they aren’t quite there yet (3.5/5)

An album

I like it for nostalgic reasons. They sound like a Wish.com GnR, but I really like a song or two.

you want it all but you can’t have it….

One of my fav, the good old days

As a 90's kid and lover of all things 90's, I have never been able to love this band. While I enjoy a few of their songs, the rest is just not something I can get into. His voice can be a little too much at times.

I thought I would like this one, but in the end, I didn't enjoy it so much. Maybe another day with another mood, but it's not a bad album; it is consistent with what is expected from a 1989 album.

I never gave these guys much of a chance. I’ve heard a song or two from this album, but was never compelled to follow up. Their act isn’t unique. They sound like bands who’ve punched that ticket long before. Kudos for making a living at it.

it was good, i dunno. might listen to it again

Enjoyed most of it more than I thought I would.

Some great moments but hasn’t aged hugely well

Need to listen

War Pigs and epic! Nice

It’s no Angel Dust!

I was only familiar with Epic before this. A pretty good album even if nothing else stands out. You can hear the beginnings of late-90s nu-metal. Faith No More probably did it better than any of them though.

This the 90s

Epic is, well.. epic but the rest of the album is kinda standard fare metal. But then again Faith no more has always been a metal band for people who don’t like metal.

This one has me very conflicted. Part of me thought “2” but a slightly larger part of me thought “4”. The band was very tight; the songs were cool but mostly not too memorable on my first listen. Definitely engaging enough for one listen I can tell the singer has actual talent but he usually chooses to sing with his crazy nasally voice so that’s curious. Once in a while he’ll sing higher and sound normal and it makes me wonder why he doesn’t sing like that all the time. The War Pigs cover was very faithful to the original

Fine. War Pigs cover was decent, but not as good as the original.

Was alright.

I kind of liked it! “Epic” is a good song that I’ve heard tons of times. The cover of “War Pigs” was good. But, honestly, some of the songs dragged on for too long, which took away from the fun a bit. Overall, I did mostly enjoy it

I didn't hate it, didn't love it. Some songs I could vibe too, others less so. Would be great to see live I imagine

I did enjoy the instrumentation a lot but I hate his whiney voice. I've always hated the song Epic and had no idea this was the band, so when it was track two I was quickly turned off. I liked a few tracks tho

Some of this is basically metal, like Surprise! You're Dead, but otherwise it's a somewhat confusing mix of genres. The intro is a solid hard rocker. Hit single Epic probably sounded fresh in 1989 but I don't think it does now. There's some good moments: I liked the distorted bassline and guitar work in The Morning After. Woodpecker from Mars is an interesting track with a middle Eastern sounding riff and an extended breakdown. The cover of War Pigs is fun. I don't know what to make of this.

I gave an extra star for Epic and War Pigs. Otherwise, meh.

What I expected

90s pop-grunge

I have an abiding memory of Faith No More doing a slightly terrifying shout 'It's Your Letters' theme on TGI Friday, so always assumed they were somewhat inaccessible. Not so, classic anthemic 80s cock rock, some familiar, some funky nu metal vibes. Singer bit whiny though.

Hated it a lot less than I thought I would.

Pretty interesting album, but not really my thing.

Good rocker, not for casual listeners

I much preferred the second half of the album, especially underwater love. I can appreciate the funky bass, always a positive in my book. Woodpecker from Mars, dude I felt like I was ascending to have an intergalactic war. It did lose me with some of the lyrics like in The Edge of the World, not sure how much I liked him whispering in my ear about killing his mother...

Feels like it deserves a second listen. War Pigs cover is sick 🤌🤌🤌

I enjoyed it more than I thought. Mike Patton has clearly grown on me since I've been binging on Corpse Flower.

Solides Heavy Metal mit ordentlichen Songs. Schwierige Funk und Rap Elemente wechseln sich mit interessanten alternativen Rockelementen und Pianoteilen und Balladen ab. “Epic” sollte man mal gehört haben. “Zombie Eaters” & “Edge of the World” stechen positiv hervor. Das Album ist nicht schlecht und für Band und Genre prägend aber insgesamt nicht überdurchschnittlich.

Mike Patton's in my top 7 men who have definitely shoved a firecracker up their ass that I have no factual proof for and that I solely curate based off vibes. Other people on this list include Till Lindemann, Stephen Hawking, and the guy who invented firecrackers. Music's good. I think the two albums released after this one are better, but it's fine. Strong 3/5.

Strong 3

C+ From Out Of Nowhere 3 Epic 4 Falling To Pieces 2 Surprise! You're Dead! 1 Zombie Eaters 3 The Real Thing 3 Underwater Love 3 The Morning After 3 Woodpecker From Mars 3 This was okay. Sounded like a collab between Kid Rock and Lenny Kravitz.

Dads kind of music

Admittedly, the only song I know by this band is Epic, which is kinda overrated imo, but the rest of this album isn’t too bad. Particularly enjoyed the War Pigs cover

Compositional elements from different rock genres that peaked in the 90s cobbled together to form something that is epic, silly, irreverent, and earnest all at the same time. Kind of fun, though not particularly pleasant, to listen to.

Wertung: 3/5

Surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. Talented musicians that successfully ripped off Metallica and added punk elements. Unfortunately "rap rock" comes to mind so there's an automatic -2 stars.

It has a those few songs you’ve heard a million times, that’s good. But the whole rap/rock thing isn’t wearing all that well over time.

Sounds like a bridge between Guns and roses and 90s rock. “Epic” and “Zombie Eaters” sound like a blueprint for the Red Hot Chili Peppers (who I know had albums before this came out but this is uncanny) and other parts of the album sound like the influenced Soundgarden and Lenny Kravitz. Not something I’d ever listen to again but a cool historical document nonetheless.

Definitely a band that tried to stretch the genre -- heavy metal mixed in places with hip hop, funk and synth-pop. It's jarring in places and the vocals don't help (though they're perfect in the War Pigs cover). Not quite sure what to make of this. At the end of the day I feel like they tried a lot of different combinations of styles; many didn't work and those that did were ultimately done better by someone else.

Odd mix of genres on this album, from a band searching for an identity. Goes everywhere from ballady to rap to full-on Slayer. I enjoyed "From Out of Nowhere" and "Epic", but hated "Surprise! You're Dead!" "War Pigs" was as good as the original.

There's something about the guys voice that just drives me nuts... Their music isn't necessarily bad, and they're a great influence to other bands and modern rock/metal music but I cannot tolerate his singing.

I thought the instrumentals were fantastic. But man does Mike Pattons voice leave no impression on me. It's very nasally to me and I genuinely dislike his voice.

I really liked the first four tracks. There's great energy and for the time i feel like it really was an indicator for the sounds that will become popular in the late-nighties. After the first four tracks tho, the mixing just falls off for some reason, everything just is off to the back and I can't make out any instruments and I played multiple tracks back to back and really felt this difference. listen to the mixing of falling to pieces or epic or out of nowhere and compare it to real thing, underwater love, the morning. None of the instruments pack a punch. listen to the guitars on the latter tracks and compare them with the first four there's such a difference. woodpecker from mars sounds good though, i love this instrumental. the war pigs cover is fine, i'd just rather listen to the original they didn't do anything different with it. The album ends on a great closer with edge of the world, with a more laid back track with the piano as the lead. it gave me a bit of Fiona apple vibes. It's a decent to a strong 3.

Didn't know Faith No More is the band who played "Epic" so that was nice to learn. War pigs cover was.. fine?

Grrsssssss

Tiene una canción Épica.

Fun listen but not really for me in its entirety. Saved one or two songs

I’ve heard the band’s name but don’t think I’d heard any of their music before. I like this album. They are such skilled players and I like their composition and performance styles. Hits hard without overdoing it and they’ve got such a tight way of delivering their music. I hear some similarities to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I know that’s covered in the Wikipedia article, but this band sounds like their own thing to me. Besides, every band in history sounds a bit like a bunch of other bands. That’s not at all a criticism; same thing applies to any art form. Love the cover of “War Pigs”. Overall, some real good stuff here.

Surprise! You're worth 3 stars!

Right out of the gate it sounds pretty Sonic-y. It was cool

epic was great, the rest was fine

Very weird album, couldn’t really get a handle on whether I thought it was good or bad or whether I liked it or not! I think I liked that they made such unflinchingly specific and strange choices but I didn’t love most of those choices myself? Glad I experienced it, wouldn’t go back to it.

3.4 precursor to Radiohead

Sometimes you listen to an album from here, unfamiliar to you, and you think "Wow, this sounds so fresh. Everything being made now is just a rehash of some random 20th century trend. But this original take is way better!" I think if you tried to bring this sound back you'd be drawn and quartered!

I went into this not knowing what to expect. I was familiar with the radio release but had never listened to anything beyond that. Overall it was fine, I really enjoyed the cover of War Pigs, but I don't know that I'll seek it out beyond adding Epic and War Pigs to a play list.

This album is okay, and fluctuates between tracks of 2-4 quality, but mostly 3-4. I didn't realize they were 80s since I've never heard any of their stuff except Epic. I don't think I'll likely come back to this album, but few tracks maybe, so I'll be nice and give them an “average” 3. Some highlights: Epic drives me crazy because it was so overused for commercials. It's too bad for an otherwise decent track. Surprise You're Dead is a nice piece of thrash rock! The Morning After lead cords are very nice, and the variations for bass and accompanying guitar are stellar. Woodpecker From Mars is a fun Egyptian rock sounding piece that makes me think of Godsmack's tracks with eastern flair. The best thing out of this album is their comsing reminder to listen to Paranoid more, because that entire album is incredible!

A few thoughts: 1. I was only familiar with "Epic" so I was a little surprised by the range on this album. Overall, it was decent stuff. 2. I'm confused as to why a cover of "War Pigs" was included. It sounds pretty dang close to the original from Black Sabbath; this is what I'd expect to hear by a cover band in a bar. So why the hell is it included here? If you're going to cover a song and release it as part of an album under your band name, you've gotta make the song your own. You can't just do a note-for-note remake. Maybe I'm missing a backstory here, but this track being on the album baffles me. Not sure why anyone would ever choose this version over the Black Sabbath version. I'm tempted to give this a 2 just because of War Pigs, but I'll reluctantly give it a 3 since that's how I feel about the rest of the album.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers I can listen to. Pretty good overall.

Probably responsible for the existence of Limp Bizkit but pretty good otherwise

Starts out relatable then there's a push toward a musical finale that kind of gets in the way. There's a good bit of truth in it--Daddy could stop it all, so true. And a good bit of just plain theater. Dramatic sympathy for the poor old bed song lol. Yay he met a girl lol. But in the end I like it. It's nice to hear a baritone. It's almost a 4

Not my vibe but bit of a Tony kiddish singing sound in there

Pretty good. Surprised to recognise Epic, had no idea it was by Faith No More.

I like the music itself, it's a lot of fun. Not a fan of the voice though.

I have no idea if I like this or not so I'm just going with 3

Didn’t have much time for FF at all when this first came out. Unfairly put them in the same bracket as other dross that was in those ‘indie landfill’ circles, but as time went on I realised how these are more special than their peers. Still wouldn’t say I’m a fan, even after revisiting this now, but it’s certainly not poor by any standards. Some interesting guitar riffs which sets it apart, and you can tell they are more substance over style, unlike some of their peers. It does sound very mid-00s, but from memory these were one of the bands that kickstarted that. I hated most of that scene, but I won’t hold it against these. Especially given the singer is a Sunderland fan. Wont ever top the work they did with Sparks as FFS. Hell of a record that. Highlights: Tell Her Tonight, Aug Achse, This Fire

Wanted to listen to this for a while now, read an interview with the lead singer and he cited a few influences that suggested there would be more to Faith No More than Epic. There was a little bit more but I think I'd expected a great album so left a bit disappointed. To me they sound like a late 80s/early 90s American teenagers favourite band, like the musical equivalent of teenage mutant ninja turtles. It's a weird mix of punk, metal and sort of rap in an in your face way. The bass was very slappy. It was listenable but I don't think I'll be back.

Epic and From Out of Nowhere are pretty good. A good mix of songs and styles, but won't revisit.

Very much an album of its era. Faith No More is one of those bands where I dig their vibe more than their music. While I like smoke Patton’s vocals on this album and this album was their big commercial success, I think I like FNM earlier, pre-Patton material a bit more.

3.5 stars - enjoyed the instrumental Woodpeckers from Mars/Black Sabbath cover the most. Vocalist can be grating at times- like the vocalist from Smashing Pumpkins

Pas degueu pour du metal

sits somewhere in between old school metal, Limp Bizkit, and dad rock. Overall I can't quite tell how ironic all this is supposed to be, especially how goofy the vocals can be at points. not great, not terrible, but I can see why this album is on the list. 3.25/5

Album opens a bit more synth-poppy than I would have imagined with From Out of Nowhere. Pretty bland song with poor mixing -- not a fan. Epic is the song everyone knows Faith No More for. A strange punky song with a hip-hop delivery and overbaked outro into a piano track. Always felt like this was a weird song, but I enjoy it for the most part. Falling to Pieces has a meaty slap bass line and gets the head nodding. Not bad, but a bit long for what it is. Surprise You're Dead switches gears into somethign more reminiscent of a hardcore punk song featuring driving bass + guitar riff and shouted vocals. Best song thus far. Zombie Eaters is an epic sludge. Pretty dope with a vocal delivery that reminds me a lot of early RHCP; wonder if they claim them as influences or if this is just a convergence on a style of the time. In particular this feels very similar to the song Blood Sugar Sex Magic. This drifted to the background for a while until Woodpecker From Mars came on. Oh my bass. What a strange little song. The cover of War Pigs is quite capable, but doesn't really extend the original in any significant way. Love the song, but hard to understand the reason behind putting it on wax. Album closes on Edge of the World which has a swingy jazz feel to it. This album was not at all what I expected going in. Faith No More cover a lot of range with their sound, sampling everything from synth-pop (From Out of Nowhere) to hip-hop (Epic) to hardcore punk (Surprise! You're Dead) to loose, swingy jazz (Edge of the World). I can't say I loved all of the trip, but there were certainly plenty of high points -- mostly in the more aggressive numbers. 3 / 5 because the good outweighed the bad

Epic was another song where I have heard the song a thousand times (maybe from GTA San Andreas?) but have never heard of Faith No More. This is a good album to listen to while cutting grass. They really accentuate some basslines which is cool. Pretty decent metal album, but nothing too special in my eyes. War Pigs cover was cool, but they didn't really do much to it. Probably good enough for a 3.5, but rounding down because not much stuck out to me besides the songs I recognized. Good for what it is, but I'm not clamoring for more.

Very unique style of music with the singer being the main focal point with his crazy change of voice. I had to look it up to make sure it wasn't two singers. I didn't really have any standout moments on this album except for Epic which I already knew, but Woodpecker from Mars was a pretty good harsh instrumental to end it on. Those two songs earned this album a 3, but it is a low 3. I don't think I will ever listen to another album of theirs by choice, it is just not my style.

This was ok. Not really my jam but I do really like Epic and the War Pigs cover. Leaning towards a 2-3 but going to go with 3

Solid enough but nu metal/rap-rock will never be my main bag.

Good drive forward on the songs, driven a lot by very tight rhythm section, the distorted guitar adds drama along with Mike Patton’s incredible delivery, that adds depth, drama and a sort of mystery. Use of keys and pedals is also a depth adding element.

At the time of original release, I would have given this more air time, because this album was a more polished production than a lot of the metal groups at that time. Remembering what this album was like, and thinking of how music has moved on, all I'll say is, I didn't dislike it as much as I thought I would, and I got through the entire album with no skips. Would listen to it if it was on, but wouldn't choose to play it.

Not bad, rock assez calme mais entraînant

It was different to what I was expecting. One of those bands who I had heard of but not heard. Quite rocky - a cross between RHCP, Queens of the Stone Age, Pearl Jam etc. I think. What do I know.

This is an album I wanted to like more and expected to like more but as I listened throughout it I couldn’t find much to enjoy a lot. It’s rock. It’s grungy. It’s metal but it’s a lot of stuff that isn’t great. The cover of war pigs wasn’t that great and there were only a couple songs I’d revisit. 6.1/10

Liked it more than I thought I would

Definitely enjoyed it a bit more than expected and I added a couple of songs to the playlist. Just think it didn’t try to do too much the majority of the time which was why it was an easier listen.

This album was ok, rock with elements of metal and funk.

Definitely among the top 10 voices that make me want to punch someone, as well as the top 10 albums that sound like nu metal but aren't.

- Holy shit he sounds like Patrick Stump - Sick War Pigs cover

Had no clue that I knew a couple songs by them when I started this album. Overall pretty mildly enjoyable outside of the couple bigger songs. 3.5

I enjoyed this album a lot more than I expected to, will I listen to it again? probably not but I wouldn't turn it off. Highlight for me was War Pigs

Fairly eclectic - straight rock, thrash, RHCP style rap/funk rock, Queen style theatrical rock, jazz rock - everything!

I enjoyed this much more than I had anticipated It really grew on me as I kept listening

Epic is a great song and there are a few others. The vocals are not my taste.

Why does the real thing sound like Epic? Because there's a formula?

Idk but to me it sounds very generic, but still very enjoyable rock
