Reviews (page 7 of 7)
There is so much weird and unnecessary British electronica/house music on this list, and this is another example of that. I can guarantee I didn't need to listen to this before I die.
In a nutshell: yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah… So. Much. Needless. Repetition. This music is a product of its time. A genre made popular by Craig David’s “Born To Do It”. Which from memory was a more charismatic album compared to this handful of nothing. Overall: 1/10
I don’t think this album is supposed to be played straight thru, feels like the same song on repeat and I did not enjoy it.
It's astounding how many bad choices vocalists can make in a row.
It might have been ground breaking at the time, but ... now ... it's a no for me. Couldn't get through it.
Would have got my two-star "not my kind of thing but I see why others might like it" rating, but no one needs two full hours of this
2 hours long. Couldn't get thru it
Over-produced and syrupy. Isn't saying anything I haven't heard before, and the tunes are pretty obvious. Not for me.
Sincerely sorry, more like. Korrupt FM for the dinner party wine wankers.
Well that was crap. The only thing the wiki article mentioned was that this album was on this list, nothing more. What can I say. Every track I listend to was either boring, repetitive or annoying sometimes all three.
The album cover says it all.
Not in my edition of the book! 2000. 1 star. A double album of tedious 5 minute+ samples, rap and electronic beats. Fuck no. Why is this on the list?
I wonder if the editors of this list are the same people who make those "NOW THATS WHAT I CALL" awful CDs that a far future alien race will discover and marvel at. 1/5
This wasn't it
Boring and bland, not only is it not my style of music but someone decided to have the album cover look like a cologne advertisement.
they had a live DJ at the Gap today. he was shite.
First one I couldn't make it through. It sounds like the demo track that came with the music editing software except less good. No restraint, tasteless, and deeply unmusical through stretches. "Hey, I had this great new idea. I made a 5 minute song with only one word in it....'attitude'....... but it's said 300 times in a row.....don't worry I occasionally filter it and I'm always adjusting that fade knob." Pre-dubstep. Crippling ADHD in music form. Feels childish in almost every way, but saying that feels insulting to children and not insulting enough to this album. 0/5 but it won't let me, so I guess 1/5.
this record is the uncanny valley of music. it's almost music, but it's not soulful enough to be music. it's like the royalty-free music that plays in porn or like music made for a film to demonstrate the evils of when musicians lack creative freedoms.
Boots and cats for British gearheads.
Awful. I’m afraid you’re never going to convince me that this is listenable music.
Reminded me of Craig David but not nearly as good
I didn’t find anything interesting about this. Was this the same song for 2 hours?
Feels very dated. I think garage had its moment 20 years ago but its very boring now.
1/5
Didn't enjoy. This is an album, I'd be fine to not be listening to before I die.
No. Just plain no.
Not terrible, but nothing noteworthy. I'm 100% sure that some albums would like a spot on the list instead...
The movie "Groundhog Day" works better as a movie than an album. There is virtually nothing compelling about this album, and is arguably the worst album I've heard in my life.
Ahh yes, the sounds of Old Navy.
Like kje sånn musikk
Boring boring boring
Repetitive garbage. And 2 hours of it? Get fucked.
Got to love an album that's not in the book, you've never heard of either it or the artist, and noone cared enough about to write anything of substance on Wikipedia. Oh and it's UK garage. Amazing. In this instance, when I recognise a song it makes it worse (hi, Crazy Love) because I hated UK garage. Sincere is ok I guess, never needed to hear it again though. Turned the down after about 4 tracks, nothing to see here. Those committed to the project can obviously quit after disc 1 (alarming numbers of people consistently fail to understand the concept of bonus tracks) but the album is still over an hour long. Worst track, Slum King
Bro really thinks he cooked with this one
I have heard royalty free music with more edge than this record. What kind of music is this so I can avoid it for the rest of my life. God awful.
Adequate. The end.
Oh God this one was hard to get through. Why is this a must listen?
Listening notes, well none really. This album left no lasting impression. I think this is meant to be a pure dance beat album, or one of those albums one used to hear in the background at trendy upscale restaurants. Aside from dance, some elements of r&b and rap, but nothing really superb...
Ugh, back to the chav sex music again. Garage (and R&B of the dance genre) is I think my most disliked music genre out there. It’s sooooo dreary and lacking any personality. I don’t like to give out 1*, however,…..
Oh no, it's Garage. Always found this styleee a bit comedy and best suited to young chavs, of which I am neither. Still not as bad as per Ubu.
I just really didn't like this
This album walked so that other artists could run away from the choices made here and create good music
Possibly fun in the club when you're shitfaced, but not when you're sober at home
Ah yes, UK Garage. Popular for 20 minutes at the turn of the century. And still grim. This album is far too long, full of awful vocals and irritating beats.
Nah
What they don't tell you about "1,001 albums to listen to before you die" is the 900 albums that will kill you.
Completely replaceable. Not offensive but very generic.
Music is subjective, but UK Garage must be objectively the worst genre ever to gain popularity. It's not exciting, you can't dance to it, it's not in any way beautiful or interesting, and it has absolutely nothing to say. Like this album, it's lame, vacuous and has no redeeming features whatsoever. Rating: 1/5 Playlist track: Crazy Love Date listened: 18/06/24
Sounds like it was generated by AI. Incredibly bland and flavorless. I couldn't listen to two hours of this.
This is not for me
Listen, I like repetition. I think a lot of electronic albums on the list get a bad rap because of their use of repetition, like Flatboy Slim or Daft Punk. What makes them good is the underlying understanding of how to keep a catchy, exciting hook fresh and their use of complex layers of instruments and sounds. Just take Around the World or Praise You as master classes of this; they’re “basically” the same song the whole time but there’s so much going on that keeps them progressing musically and keeps your attention. This album, however, totally makes me understand why people hate repetitive techno. Just generic, so many of the songs sound the same, and most importantly, most of the hooks are dull. My favorite was the Introduction, the piano melody is very cool. But yeah even as a lover of deadmau5 and Daft Punk and other house music along these lines, this really is a poor representation in my opinion. Not offensively bad by any means but cmon what’s it doing here? I wouldn’t be annoyed if one of these tracks came on during a house mix but back to back the lack of creativity and versatility is apparent.
I suppose I was due for one of these boring UK electronica albums
I can't listen to more than 30 seconds of this without getting PTSD flashbacks from when my mum would drag me to a shopping centre. I'm definitely not putting myself through 2 whole hours of this.
1 this some trash
No
TWO HOURS OF THIS SHIT?! COME ON! This is generic repetitive trash and there is no world where this should be on any list of things that don't suck. And I'm not saying this from a place where I'm just having a difference of opinion. This is actual trash.
Another why is this in here albums
Not sure how this gets on a list like this. It's....ok, but nothing special. it did little for me.
No thank you
Painful
This sounds like the terribly generic music that plays in a suburban dental office. Not a fan. I was thinking about how bad this was and was comparing it to Massive Attack - but unlike Massive Attack, this didn't have a band name like Massive Attack that was pretending to be something that it wasn't. The name of this band felt more suited to the horrible music they were making.
this was less than nothing emotionally lyrically sonically. and 3x longer than it should have been.
I got 9 songs in before I just couldn’t do it anymore. I absolutely hated this. Somehow it’s both super boring and also very irritating at the same time. I’m honestly surprised I was able to stick with it for that many. And why is it so damn long?
Insanely repetitive and way too long. When the only info in the Wikipedia article is that it was included on this list, it begs the question of why it was included. That said, there were a couple of tracks that weren’t bad, but they are near indistinguishable from each other to make the whole thing a slog.
removes the teeth and claws from UK bass music, then drowns it in treacle
Spastic. Not listenable.
I tried, couldn't make it past 2 or 3 songs. sounds like awful drum and bass with R&B lyrics over it. Vocals aren't too terrible but the background is painful.
I listened to a few and was not willing to go on. This album is complete trash.
This is a big bag of poop
I knew before listening that this is one of the most unpopular albums on this list, so I was pretty worried because I had already given another 1 pretty recently and I don’t want to give too many 1s out. It was OK at the beginning, but as the album went on it became absolutely interminable and incredibly boring. It just feels like there’s nothing to attach to here. I put “Son of Sam” by Elliott Smith (a song from another album on this list) on the Spotify queue so I could avoid listening to the deluxe songs and when I got to that point, I felt pure relief after having to listen to all of this. I understand why this has a reputation now.
I struggle to accept this pretentious soulish muzak as something belonging to this list.
I listened to the first track and a half. So bad that I randomly skipped to a few other songs. Repetitive, boring, no redeeming features.
Not my thing. Seems very generic electronic music of that time and again I'm totally lost to what makes this album more culturally significant than any other similar album. It sounds no better or worse than any other music that would have been in DDR at the time.
I’ll listen to the rest of this, but then I’ll forget it in a haze of non-specific UK garage blandness.
Toooooo repetitive
go to any dying American mall and this is what will be playing in Express
Gefällt mir nicht
Poorly dated.
nah this ain't it
Electronica is definitely my most challenging genre. There have been tiny moments of relief but this was a proper slog haha. But I made it through every song.
OK, I like electronic music but this is just soulless garbage. I make an effort on almost every album on this list but I could not finish this. It's unbearably boring, repetitive, unimaginative...
This drum machine. This is bland. I checked and thankfully this is no longer on the list.
The British electronic scene of the late 90s/early 00s had the highest highs but also the lowest lows.
Yet another vapid dance floor LP that has aged poorly since the new millennium. Been getting a string of these lately, which makes me feel I should have my electronica rant ready to copy-paste. Needless to say, it's a waste of a slot on the list when so many better electronic albums exist.
NO!!!
I've never been able to get into UK Garage music, it's just never done anything at all for me. This record does try to do something different and interesting with it at least, but it still comes across as mostly repetitive and boring in my opinion.
Voll nervig. Der Drumcomputer hat oft das selbe Pattern. Null Sterne.
bad
Looked up the wiki after one song. House music is not a serious genre of music. Grab an instrument, not a MacBook. 0 stars
For some reason I didn't rate this. I don't remember anything about this album.
The fuck????
i'm not an expert on electronic music but surely this can't be the absolute pinnacle of the genre. surely there must be better stuff out there that would deserve a spot on this list more than this boring repetitive mess.
In the bottom 5. Waste of time.
The vocals are hot garbage. Danny Vicious and Elizabeth Troy have very grating voices. This whole album made me sad, the string and piano backing track isn't horrible but I hate the vocals. This seems like it would play at a department store at 8:00am, it's bad. The whole album feels disjunct and hard to listen to. Concept noir also did nothing for me. It's all the parts I hate from gospel music. Just because it takes skill to sing like this, does not mean it's good. I will never listen to this.
I tend to like electronica, but this is just boring and has nothing of value.
Giving mall music and not in a good way. The soundtrack that would send me into a spiral along with shitty perfume samples and bright lights
It felt like I’m was on hold for a London based phone sex hotline. 1/5
I made it to the end of the first track I hated this sound the first time around and 25 years has done nothing to improve my opinion of it
You know those UK public information films from the 70s? The ones where unthinking kids get themselves killed by playing on railways or climbing into dumped refrigerators? Well you'll wish you had been one of those kids after listening to this drek.
Most of this sounds like a pretty generic beat with random sounds or sometimes a very repetitive melody thrown over it. The first song started out promising but ended up disappointing
In an ode to this album's lack of creativity, I'm copying my favorite review from the front page: Boring, repetitive, and super long. Possesses about as much cultural importance as a cologne ad, which makes the album cover convenient.
Not sure if it’s just the genre but this album wasn’t it for me
This type of music is for someone. That someone is not me. Electronic music like this is punishingly boring and I can't imagine being moved by this. I guess if I was doing club drugs I could tolerate it but I'm not so I can't.
1+
More sterile and unremarkable dance music. Hard to be really excited about this stuff. 1/5
I only listened to disc 1 (tracks 1-16) since disc 2 was just remixes. BOOOOOORING!
No
It’s always funny when you see the Wikipedia excerpt and it has a couple sentences and then this album is in the 1001 albums list. Clearly no one else likes this album except the guy that made this list. I know I don’t. Another album on this list that probably shouldn’t be. This is just a 2000s club Dj mix. Not sure what’s the point. 2.3/10
This is a perfect example of the British bias on this list. It’s nothing noteworthy. It’s boring and repetitive to the point of annoyance.
Heard before: no New Jack really hasn't aged well, and I thought it sounded like a TRS-80 in a tin can at the time. This wants to be an evolution of that, but even when the performances over the top are good, the beats are really bad. And it's a producer's record. I like my music either colder or warmer; this is just tepid, try-hard hotel-lobby music. The fake designer shop bag on the cover kind of says it all. Top tracks: Tired Games, Sanctuary, Sincere (Re-Cue'D)
Painfully soulless and anonymous dance album that gives this book a bad name.
Music for guys that wears a fedora.
The fact that this album is present in this list is an insult to all users of the site and proves that it is all just a big charade to plug as many British artists as possible.
Better contender for an album you don't need to listen to before you die.
Seemed okay to start but only because my last album was Sex Packets... Gotta remember the title of the book says 'albums you must HEAR', not 'albums you must listen to in their entirety'.
Terrible British electrocheese
This has to be AI generated. There's no way anyone has actually listened to this awful, repetitive, annoying, boring excuse for club music
Not for me. Once again the dance music just doesn’t do anything for me. Perhaps I just don’t get it.
meh, I wan't super impressed. Had a hard time getting through it. 2 stars. nah 1
Wrong list.
Meh..
Nup What is this?
Arrgghh... a 2hr+ british house dj album. No fucking way I'm listening to this whole thing. You know it's going to be good when the second album of the double album only has 1 song that's cracked 100k plays on spotify. Did all these beats come from a Casio keyboard?? What is this? Made it about 10 tracks with frequent skipping. Albums like this really kill the credibility of that book.
Absolutely not. That’s the review.
Another enigma album on the list. It's the first time I have heard about Mj Cole or about any of his songs, and after listening to the whole record, I'm not really surprised. It is basically a simple house beat, with some other instruments added on top and an atmospheric vocal as a topping. Although this description applies to many bands, like Massive Attack at times, or anything based on samples, it just didn't work this time. I wasn't into that album, I didn't like any song, I didn't feel the atmosphere at all. Very below average experience and honestly, I'm wondering, what was so special about this album in the first place, to show up on a list like that. Probably 1000 albums is a bit too many, for such a short history of modern music.
I didn't know this app had ads now. Number of albums left to review: 519 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 230 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 110 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 141 - including this music for ads.
Did not gel with this at all really. Not my jam in general, and this doesn't seem to be a particularly good example of the genre? The 'Be Sincere' motif does a lot of heavy lifting, I didn't count but it felt like it featured on at least a third of the tracks. That said, there's one guy who contributes on a couple of tracks (Danny Vicious) who is the most obvious inspiration for Kurupt FM - they even do an interlude where they pretend to be running a pirate radio station and it's just as cheesy and painful as the worst Grinda bits... 'all the text message crew'... but with a bit more layered in. 1/5
Nah.
This is boring and pedestrian. Generic throw-everything-into-the-mix electronic garbage. The singers are so darn generic it hurts to listen to. Maybe at the time of release it was something, but this is just bad.
MJ Cole is an artist I’ve never heard of, although sometimes I think I might live under a rock in regards to popular music so that may not mean much! The deluxe version of this album is over 2 hours long, so I think I’ll still with the standard edition, thank you very much. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: none When this album started, I thought, “We’ll this is certainly different.” It’s definitely not the type of album I would gravitate towards, being garage music. During track one, I was unsure but felt like I’d give it a chance. However, by track 5 I’d had enough. It reminds me of the type of music chavs would have playing from their phones as a teenagers, while they were trying to beat me up for looking different. Admittedly, that does bring in some bias, but the music is genuinely boring anyway. Somebody tell MJ Cole that it’s ok to have a different tempo once in a while.
vibey not my style\
I don’t often give one-star ratings but when I do, it’s ALWAYS some British electronic garbage.
what the fuck is that boring ass house music
Sorry , but it’s a total whack. Dont even know how it made it to the must listen before you die list.
Repetitive and boring electronica that shows the author of this list did not realize 1001 was such a large number. He fixed his mistake by throwing in random, generic British albums.
Meh
I've been thinking recently how I've never given an album a 1. What would it take to give one? There's so much variety to music and so much to possibly find endearing in any style that it should be pretty rare. I'm not sure this album is that low. Probably a 2. But I felt like handing a 1 out. And I was looking to skip through to the end or just turn it off from the second song and all of its annoying cut-out and skipping effects, and loops. Tired Games was a fitting name. So I think I have a new criteria. If I can't stand to even finish the album, that's a bad sign. I let the whole thing play but Crazy Love and Free My Mind were about the only things passable to my ears.
It’s not terrible. I do enjoy some electronic music, this one just isn’t up my alley. 1.
*yawn* I’m only 3 songs in and already bored out of my mind. Let me play the title track and see if it’s any different. Nope, still bored.
Repetitive random cringe
No, sorry. Not sure this one earns its place on the list, at least not for me.
This was some boring shit and it was way too long.
Bit boring
Lyrically and musically very uninspiring. Could've gotten 2 stars if it would've ended a few songs sooner.
Like kje sånn musikk
Pretty sure this is what NPCs listen to.
This is barely an album, more a sample collection.
I found this challenging to listen to, rather dull and repetitive. I have to admit I didn't finish the album, sorry MJ Cole.
Only managed to listen to a quarter of the album, thought it was shite. What is this album doing on this list?
Not for me. Perhaps in a club 15 years or so ago.... Even then, probably not. Big MC Grindah vibes on the radio interlude
Sounded like the music to the Multiplayer levels of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.
Not interested
wut?
This hurts my ears.
First thought: this music makes me feel like I'm browsing a shitty store at a mall. Unfortunately, this didn't change as I sat through the rest of the album. I love good dance music but this feels like the most generic, blah version. I really don't understand why this is on the list as I feel like there have to be more groundbreaking or better versions of this subgenre of dance music. I don't hate it, I just personally find it very boring. Standout Tracks: N/A
Very boring and bland electronic music
2/10
I'm wondering if the people who gave this a positive review or even the people involved in making this album could pick any of these songs out of a lineup. I'll admit that electronic music isn't always a favorite genre of mine but I like some standout artists and albums. I'm definitely not a person who thinks you can't make good music using computers or that dance music can't be interesting but this is the kind of music that people hear and (wrongly) believe those things. Blah, blah, good beat, blah, blah you can dance to it, etc.but boring without the use of club drugs.
Not for me. So dated sounding. I really hated it.
Electronic garbage
Dull. Not for me.
helt värdelöst. det är som att svärfar tar dig som ett jävla pendeltåg
There are albums that shine forever in my personal music realm. Not this one.
Not really my thing. I'm going to be a little bit harsh and give it a 1 just because I don't do that very often.
No me gusta
Boring
Shite
So irritating I only listened to the first 7 or 8 tracks.
My first failure. I may return to be a completionist but I can't suffer through 2 hours of the same house beat in one sitting. So redundant.
Perfect for fans of vanilla ice cream, How I Met Your Mother, generic drugs, well liquor, and overall boredom in general.
Meh
05/05/2022 lmao, what? Over 2 hours of repetitive noise. Absolutely not for me.
Música lounge para un bar de medio pelo
Deserves to be forgotten.
My ears just threw up
The toast sandwich of music
Ughh This wasn't good at all.. Crazy love was the only song I made it all the way through.
Not really for me.
Dance and electric that is NOT for me. Usually I can ignore this stuff or put it on in the background and somewhat enjoy, but something hit me weird with this and it put me on edge. Nope.
I couldn't do it.
CRAP
Not a fan.
Sunday afternoon R&B for people who don’t want to listen to anything outside their comfort zone. Hypocritical perhaps, but meh!
Sounds like somebody had a demo version of Frooty Loops and went crazy with all the preloaded samples. Very boring
C'est quoi c'est de la house ?
flemme c'est bon là oh ntm l'album de 2h
Really don't understand what this is doing here. Because it's British?
I think my hatred of this album goes back to me not liking dance clubs. And probably even further back to high school dances. Either way, I think I would need drugs to enjoy it. File it in the trash bin. Highlight Track: "I see".
It's a very rare occurrence for me to turn off albums early. Usually only happens with double albums that I need to adjust to. When I really need to prevent myself from going crazy, I come back to it later that day to give it another go. But I still just wanted to shut this off after just a few tracks. The tracks are so repetitive and boring. There are some sound effects I think are unique and are of some interest, but nothing significant and just shows the potential they could put in a decent album. It's just filler club music. Some things I like, such as the trippiness of "Bandelero Desperado" for some 30 second span in the middle and the catchiness of "Crazy Love" (which distracts from its repetition). It feels like a high schooler messing around with some electronic noises to sound cool, bringing in some guest singers to avoid people from focusing on the drawn-out sequences. The only reason I'd come back to this album is if I was desperate to steal generic club tracks. I would never want to listen to the whole thing from start to finish again. 2-Step/UK Garage is a shallow, one-dimensional genre that faded like overchewed gum, with this album proving that UK Garage is nothing more than a fad.
This genre is not for me
Didn't want to finish it. Unsure if I disliked the music or the godawful album cover more
Thought it might reach the minimum of good mindless music to program to. It didn't. No bright spots. Didn't know when to end in the middle of the deluxe, but i had enough.
I have no idea how this is a "must listen to" album. It is very average at best. Never heard of this group, never heard of any of the songs. Maybe it gets better with time, but for me, it has to be a 1/5 for now.
