Reviews (page 4 of 7)
I liked this. It's weird, psychedelic, futuristic, like daft punk meets pink floyd kinda. It just got a bit long winded and boring at parts for me. Overall interesting though and I like the album cover
This album managed to constantly surprise me with its switches in style. It mostly pulls it off well, but there was a decent amount of tracks that just did nothing for me on a first listen. It does feel at times that they just threw on everything they could think of and hoped most of it will stick. Definitely something I will revisit in the future, though. Favourite track: Juxtapozed with U
I was pleasantly surprised for this album. These guys were doing this very avant garde take on alt rock at the same time as Radiohead, though I suppose a few years behind when Radiohead did it. I can hear ok computer influence all over this album. I feel like the weirdness of some sounds got in the way of the songwriting but I appreciate the effort. A little too wierd to get that pop appeal
Never heard of this band or this album. I liked it. Reminded me of a Ween album in it's variety. The singer reminded me of Damon Albarn.
Good
This one was a pretty good album. Honestly got no complaints with it other than I just don't think I'll ever go back to it. I don't know if I just started noticing it in the second half, but the first half definitely felt like a 90's take on the Beatles, with the second half still having that quality, but also taking on a kind of Yoshimi-era Flaming Lips sound (Fragile Happiness very much feels like a Yoshimi song). Honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Flaming Lips were influenced by this album on Yoshimi. But yeah, good album. Just not really something I'd find myself going back to.
Not bad. An eclectic mix of styles touching just about every genre there is in some way.
Such a cool concept of sounds.A mixture of classic sounds with a touch pf psycadelic and industrial sounds. Interesting album!
Alternate Route to Vulcan Street - 3.5/5 Sidewalk Serfer Girl - 4/5 (Drawing) Rings Around the World - 4/5 It's Not the End of the World? - 3.5/5 Receptacle for the Respectable - 3.5/5 (A) Touch Sensitive - 3.5/5 Shoot Doris Day - 3.5/5 Miniature - 3/5 No Sympathy - 3.5/5 Juxtaposed With U - 3.5/5 Presidential Suite - 3.5/5 Run! Christian, Run! - 3.5/5 Fragile Happiness - 3.5/5 A modern interpretation of psychedelia evolved from Pet Sounds and the Beatles, but it really overstayed its welcome. It sounded a lot like that era but really didn't have anything new to bring to the table outside of some synths. It's good, but not something I would ever listen to a second time. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Sidewalk Serfer Girl, (Drawing) Rings Around the World
I remember my dad bought this album and dvd because he was a huge Beatles fan and Paul McCartney played on the album. I always thought it was a weird album cover hiding some bizarre music. I was correct
A pretty good psychedelic pop rock album. Definitely has some nods to mid 60s to early 70's pop. No Sympathy had Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young vibes until it turned all glitchy half way through (which was pretty unexpected.. not sure if it worked or was too odd of a contrast). Overall, an interesting listen. 3/5.
Synes dette var helt greit. Variert og relativt interessant hele veien.
Helt ok
Sterk treer.
Very cool listen with nice sounds and some catchy songs. Nice introduction to the music. Singer sounds a lot like Jarvis Cocker from Pulp.
Rings
Different for sure, but just average. This album didn't grab me.
Hated the SFA back in the day... Really enjoyed it this time round...
I think I was expecting some sort of annoying electronica. Luckily I was pleasantly surprised, because there was very little of that. Overall this was definitely a nice listen. I guess the track No Sympathy, which is the most electronic, is my least favourite but it starts out really strong
Not bad
smash my head against the wall kind of boring
6/10
More mid british music that made it onto this list for whatever reason? Wow, color me surprised. 3* Rings around the world gave my right ear tinnitus
One thing I like about British rock bands is that they seem a lot more willing to incorporate electronic influences into their music, whereas (outside of some new wave bands) American rock seems to be allergic to the concept. I blame Disco Demolition Night. Anyways, I feel fairly mixed on this album - there are a fair few turgid songs on here but some very exciting ones as well, and I respect how weird and varied the album gets.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a TripHop album. I wasn’t quite sure where a lot of this album was going, but I didn’t mind the ride. Songs like shooting Doris Day reminded me a lot of songs like Mr. Kyte and No Sympathy had tinges of CSNY. Then there was the blacksploitation vibe of Juxapozed with U. By the time I got to Run Christian Run! I had to remind myself I wasn’t actually high. This was a very strange album, but kind of an enjoyable one too. I just I remember it tomorrow, man. We should have recorded it! Oh, wait….
Random thoughts: * pretty solid alternative album in the early 2000s * I thought I knew Super Furry Animals, I may have just heard the name but I’ve definitely never listened to them before. * Had a little Flaming Lips in there. Wasn’t easy to pin down their sound. * Feels pretty niche for 1001 but I guess that is the point. I’d definitely listen again. Already played it twice through.
Another alright album. Nothing that really got me excited, but nothing I wanted to turn off.
its very random which makes it kinda cool cuz there s a bunch of random genres
Wasn't familiar with this at all. As interesting as it isn't. Some really cool stuff in fits and starts though
the cover makes me think that it’s some alternative dance/madchester thing. i’m wrong. 3/5
I was pleasantly surprised by this album and liked it a lot more than I thought I would. They throw a lot of different sounds against the wall, but thankfully most of it sticks. I may need to give this one another listen.
This was a surprise but the album got worse then longer I listened
Sehr gefälliges Album. Bisschen spacig, psychedelisch aber auch sehr melodisch. Hat bisschen was von Blurs "13", ohne an dessen Intensität heranzukommen.
Band has better songs not on this album.
Was waffling between a 3 and 4 for this, probably a 3.5 in reality. I admire the experimentation on some of the songs, enjoyed some of the weirder electronic moments, but maybe there wasn't quite enough of it? Some good pop songcraft and nice melodies, and the orchestration is very lush on many songs. No Sympathy is the highlight ("you deserve to die" is just heavy) but yeah this didn't quite jump out to me as a masterpiece.
Some was forgettable. Some I really loved (the first half of no sympathy), but then things are quickly ruined by droning monotony (the end of fragile happiness and the album) or by chaos into an otherwise great track.
Album was, neat. I can dig the electronicness of the songs. Juxtapozed With U was my fave, I can see why it was the most popular. 5.7/10
Trying to combine several styles is usually going to create something that's very hit or miss. I think this was a little more hit, but some of the worse tracks went on too long
Some good other less
It's 3.5
I feel like it times it had the right idea but was messed up by formulaic melodies and cringe lyrics. And I can't put my finger on it but his voice reminds me of a singer that I really can't stand.
This was okay-to-boring. Several tracks were fun, several were experimental and interesting, and many were just filler sound. There doesn't feel like there's much to come back to here. This is perhaps a 2.5.
This is like a more accessible Flaming Lips. I really liked it
Lot of influences and things going on. Kinda cool but not super memorable. Reminded me of flaming lips but the songwriting isnt as interesting i thought.
Eh
New to me. Unique. Pretty good. Need to hear more from them.
I was reading the reviews while listening to this one, and the main criticism I saw was a poor execution of genre blending. And sure, this album might be a hodge podge of styles, but I wouldn’t call any of it bad. I had a pretty fun time wondering where they’d go next. I actually got a lot of Beach Boys here in the hooks mixed with an early Blink 182 feel and (obviously) some Ween. I think it’s funny when people criticize an album for being outside the box in trying to do something unique.
A good album, I liked Sidewalk Serfer Girl and (Drawing) Rings Around The World the most.
Inventive, creative, experimental, but ultimately underwhelming for me. Musically varied, but a bit bland and flat somehow. I listened and listened and couldn’t hear Paul McCartney chewing celery either. I’m glad they made this album, but it wasn’t made for me.
2 Super Furry Animals albums in my first 100... I think this author was a fan! Very creative album that sounded at different times like The Beatles, Lenny Kravitz, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, and Crosby Stills & Nash. I didn't find myself singing much or with songs on my mind, but enjoyed the listen.
I quite liked this album there were a few I had to skip but also a few I listened to a few times over, added a couple
Fun psychedelic rock. Extended album version was crazy long
I had never heard of this group before. An enjoyable listen, but too long of an album with too many samey-sounding songs.
I quite enjoyed Gruff Rhys’ album last year and it made me wonder if I had wrongly pigeonholed Super Furry Animals at the time they were at their peak. I don’t really remember which their songs were but Juxtapose with U was instantly recognisable when it came on. The album sounds varied and experimental and whilst I would like to revisit, I get the feeling I wanted to like this more than I actually did.
Eclectic but not in a super interesting way
jazz
I knew nothing about this band or album going in. I really liked the dreamy songs, but the rest not so much. I'd listen to some of this again.
Quite enjoyable, at least compared to the other record I had to listen to. Nice styles (including cringe “death metal”). Otherwise unremarkable.
it was music
It didn’t really stand out in a good or bad way. Just kind of there
Hell yeah, I like when we get weird on this list. Somehow had never really heard of this band other than knowing that Rhys Ifans used to be in a band. I really liked how many genres they tapped into, lots of different sounds and inspirations. Was very cool.
I liked how this album tries to take you out of your comfort zone while you listen to it; no two songs are the same. That's not Damon Albarn singing, is it? God, I hate that guy...
Couple of bangers but a bit too experimental for me.
What a delightfully weird little album. Songs added to the playlist: Sidewalk Serfer Girl
#231/1001. This was quite a fun sonic collage, musical pastiche, pop and rock tribute. Kind of like my 1001 listening history so far. Might come back and listen to it again. Might.
This was fine but I’m not sure I’d ever revisit it.
Pretty good, not amazing, but I enjoyed listening to it.
erste song tönt schomol noch indie slop aber eigentli no schön und cozy :) checks nöd ganz aaah sie sind vo wales okaay anders bild. aber sehr de indie klavier. sidewalk serfer girl isch coooool! sehr pop, sehr maximalistisch british findi suuuper. WHAT THE FUCK ISCH NO SYMPATHY. aso d songs vorher hani suuuuper nice gfunde. ha zwor über wiiti strecke spass gha aber isch e claaaaassic indie 3
hahahaha uiii das chan soxhli alles werde albumcover leider chli wack sorry s erste lied isch würkli crack für musigkritiker:inne hani s gfühl sorry hasse sidewalk serfer girl für mich nöd cool kreativ sondern eifach weird zum weird sii it's not the end of the world? findi na easy no sympathy isch na cute! au wenn de text sehr direkt isch hahaha OHA UND JZ NA EN TAKTWECHSEL FUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN fast scho breakcore omg (und ja das isch auchli weird zum weird sii aber das mal gfalltsmer halt) juxtaposition findi au easyy funny sehr verwirrends album. paar 1er-lieder am ahfang aber s het doch es paar lieder woni echt na cool und kreativ gfunde han grundsätzlich versuechets aber echt z fest, "andersch" z sii
Reminds me of Blur in a good way but the experimentalism didn't do it many favours - liked it and would explore more
514/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
Bubble pop fun album.
I varied throughout listening to this between 2 and 4 stars. So much so, I can't really decide if I want to attempt a second listen. I like some of the apparent influence and the style that 100% fits the 90s-00s fascination with odd groups (Ween, Flaming Lips, etc.) But SFA just doesn't live up to that with this album, IMO. 3 by default.
3.0
What a crazy mix of vibes. From “oh I like this it’s catchy” to “what the hell is this noise” within the space of 2 minutes.
This one is an odd one for sure. Has some Beatles on acid moments. Plus some Fatboy Slim or Chemical Brothers vibes. Maybe some Pink Floyd, even country? Now I'm getting Beck type vibes without being so cool sounding. Anyway, this is really eclectic, and certainly has great moments. I'm not sure I'd go back to this but I can see the appeal. 3/5
Not what I was expecting based on the album cover... not that great either
Very hit or miss song to song for me
The name of the band sounded familiar. But maybe I'm confusing it with the title of a song by another band. In any case, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, the album didn't live up to them. It was okay, but I don't feel compelled to listen to it again. I found the pop music a bit boring. 3/5
There are a lot of ways to describe this: 60s psych rock filtered through 90s alternative, Welsh Flaming Lips, etc. But it's hard to describe it succinctly without referencing earlier psych acts because it jumps between a lot of different sounds. Many of these sounds are exciting. The best moments are the trippy synths and complex percussion, and the backing vocals are also a treat - the third track almost sounds like the Beach Boys in places. But much of this is long psych rock tracks that don't evolve much. "Run Christian Run" is seven minutes of the same tempo. The first half of "No Sympathy" is similarly one-note, but it's saved a bit by an electronic freakout in the second half. The best track is probably "Juxtapozed With U," it uses strings and effects to create a really pleasing pop song. Some fun stuff, but also a lot of more normal stuff in between.

Not my fav album of theirs, but a good one nonetheless
Felt like Damon Albarns cousins band.
No Sympathy // Run! Christian, Run! // 2.5/5
This was good. I found myself listening and enjoying, though looking back I can't say why and nothing particularly stood out for me. There were a few points where I found myself thinking, all this harmonizing and noodling reminds me of the Beach Boys, but, you know, enjoyable. Thus, I'd call this solid middle of the pack stuff.
The guy’s got a really cool voice, and they write pretty good hooks. They remind of Supergrass a little bit. Liked the title track a lot along with some others. Might get another Star if I spent more time with it, but I gotta move on…
I liked several of these songs very much: (Drawing) Rings Around the World, Sidewalk Serfer Girl, a couple of others. Note: I'm a little confused about track names and which ones I heard since I started with the deluxe edition and then reverted to the original, and the track listings are very different. One thing I'm sure of is that Juxtapozed is atrocious, though. That and some of the other more aimless tracks pull it down to a 3 for me. But I appreciate the variety and am glad to have found this.
Listenable. Some tracks very good, others nowt special.
This era of music is one of new labours worst legacies
Najs ju! Mys och krångel om vartannat!
Aldrig hört tidigare. Stum trea.
I've got no sympathy with you, you deserve to die till Juxtaposed with U är kul.
Super Furry Animals is just maybe a bit out of reach for me. Yup, they have all the right vibes, electronica, sort of college radio, mellow almost new age vibes... but they do it all so... over the top. Songs will be going along and sure... then they sort of "volve" not devolve or evolve, just ... do something different that is just ... for me a tad too weird maybe. I would like to say "oh, I like this song or that," but they are too ... and J U S T not by a wide margin, weird. So i can't ... quite put them into that rare air of rave and keep them in the pretty good to OK sort of level.
This seems sort of cool on the surface, but it kind of just ends up decent. It's kind of hard to pinpoint everything that goes into this sound: there's some alt-rock and electronic and psych. But it's more helpful if I were to just say it sort of sounds like if The Flaming Lips were a little less interesting. I will say, this didn't leave a very strong impression on me, but it is pleasant while it's on. There are some neat moments, but a lot of this doesn't feel like it's executed in a particularly inventive or daring way. That being said, even if Rings Around The World is not an especially interesting album, Super Furry Animals do still seem like a kind of interesting band. Read this as a low three.
For all the ideas on Rings Around the World, there is too little energy. Plenty of bold decisions, but they feel deliberate, rather than the unavoidable eccentricities of old. This doesn't mean I don't like it. Rhys writes strong melodies regardless of what else the band is doing. It is an enjoyable experience, more enjoyable as an album than most of the songs are as songs. The appearance of Paul McCartney chewing celery on Receptacle for the Respectable, as he was rumoured to have done on the Beach Boys' Vegetables, is a case in point: borrowed eccentricity and late style establishment valour, rather than the brash inventiveness of earlier. 3 I knew Super Furry Animals’ Rings Around the World was on this list but seeing it come up was still worth a double take. Eh? This? People loved and revered this one apparently. Nominated for the Mercury Music Prize I see. Someone says it was the best album of the year. Someone else says it was the Furries’ best album. All Mandela Effect for me. I honestly thought Rings Around the World died in prison in the early noughties. Well…at least that it was an album that needed a little defending. I liked this album well enough when it came out. I think I saw them on that tour (Mandela Hall maybe, were you there too?) and liked the show. Wasn’t there a general sense at the time though that the Super Furries, if they hadn’t quite ‘sold out’, had become much less interesting? To be fair their previous was a cheaply recorded Welsh language album - which perhaps sets the bar unreasonably high for interesting. Still the singles on Rings seemed to lack something. The title track deserved no particular disrespect simply for being a pastiche of Status Quo (although again - I remember that there was widespread disrespect) - pastiche was always an element of SFA - however, there was nothing uncanny or ‘off’ about it. That I think is the missing element. Sure ‘Northern Lites’ felt like pastiche as well, but of what exactly? It was odd while being brilliant. There was much less of this on Rings. Worse - there is less sense of a band here than before. Rings is a rather sedate album. Songs like ‘Herman ❤️’s Pauline’ or ‘Do or Die’ or ‘Ice Hockey Hair’ - all recalled here in superficial musical effects - simply had too much energy to have sat comfortably here. I can’t quite justify a straight comparison between the Furries’ Rings and the Manic’s This is My Truth… as neat an all-Welsh event as that would be. It’s tempting - TIMTTMY also felt like a band drained of energy and yearning for a moment in the sun of the charts. Like Rings the comparatively beige production of that album nevertheless produced music that was also, in parts, quite beautiful. Still - TIMTTMY did feel like a significant step away from the Manics previous sound(s). Maybe it was a step to the side and probably backwards, and quite possibly accidentally off the side of the stage, but a step it was. Rings sounds like SFA. It sounds like the group that made Guerrilla, but Guerrilla feels like the later album. Rings politeness of production and composition coming later seems to oddly recast Guerrilla’s aural eccentricities as the band not having had the time, money, and creative space to be boring. Much of this album is boring, in my opinion, especially the bits that make special effort to be interesting (Sidewalk Surfer Girl, Receptacle…, Juxtapozed). Of the straight material - ‘Run! Christian, Run!’ is far and away the best track. Beautiful stuff (if somehow a little smug and patronising on its take on extreme cultists) Perhaps I would say that it is beautiful because the track is all a bit Radiohead - it’s especially reminiscent of The Tourist. Was this the problem with the production on Rings I wonder (looking at the Manics here as well)? Nigel Godrich’s production is so conspicuously clean and tidy, and late in the 90s he presided over the artistic triumph of Ok Computer and the commercial triumph of The Man Who. Did other artists err in thinking that this way of making records was necessarily a way forward? Well in any case we must listen to Rings.. before we die. Which isn’t an unreasonable ask to be honest. Still, the only other SFA album on this list is Fuzzy Logic. Why not Mwng for its singular Welshness? Why not Radiator for being absolutely brilliant? If we are only listening to 2 SFA records there is definitely no room for Rings. If we were listening to 4 there still wouldn’t be. 2/5
= the Beatles More interesting than I thought
Had moments of ELO but a few too few. Was a decent enough album.
Let’s just add every blur album and every blur clone to the list sure
interesting but not quite interesting enough.
Really interesting art/experimental rock. Like if the Beatles did drugs... wait... Definitely a fun album that I will revisit! 3/5
Enjoyed it. First half better than the second half. One of their best albums
Wasn't a bad listen.
I forgot I was listening to it at one point. But it never annoyed me, it was fine.
Strange mix of Queen, metal, and techno
This was weird I really liked one song and fucking hated the next
Favourites: Alternative Route to Vulcan Street Miniature Juxtaposed With U Presidential Suite ★ Fragile Happiness ★
I read Howard Marks’ book Mr Nice and he tells a story of hanging out with a band, driving a tank, smoking dope, etc. i always pictured the band being Supergrass but read the name Super Furry Animals. So ive always thought of Supergrass’ music when this bands name is mentioned. Very wrong. Less poppy. More garage band feel. Bit of Jeaus and Mary Chain. Bit of beach boys pop sensibility, maybe some 50’s doo wop. Bet they like Phil Spectre recordings. So a surprise of an album due to expectations but not an unpleasant one. Enough elements of some good bands in this to find it interesting, like the above, or The Jam, or 70s big rock type bands. I imagone they would great live. So is it an album i had to hear before worka eaty corpse? Not sure yet. I suspect it is an album that will grow on me or at the very least i will invest a little time in listening to other also me of theirs.
good, relaxing
I can see how some people would love this but I found it a bit too ambitious for their talent. It never really settles into a style which I thought problematic rather than transcendental. It just didn’t land with me.
Certainly a unique listening experience. Pretty much any branch of rock and rock-adjacent sounds can be heard here, with some abrasive electronica mixed in too. Even more interesting is that Paul McCartney was credited with playing the carrot and celery on one of the tracks? A lot is going on here, maybe too much. You can tell these guys were inspired by all sorts of acts from the 60s/70s, but all of these varying sources kind of act as a detriment to the record as a whole I feel. Some genuinely bright spots, with a smorgasbord of interesting musical choices filling in the rest of the puzzle.
Fun alt rock but it didn’t stand out much for me
I didn't love it, but I definitely liked it. It's indie Britpop goes experimental. Rings Around the World is a song for children. No Sympathy started ok, but then went all weird in an interesting and good-sounding way. I think I like the people in this band more than I like their music.
Ok, but I don't think it'd get another spin from me. Sounds very 'of its time'
Haha this was all fine and super 2001 and then No Sympathy came on and stole my heart. 5 stars
This one was all over the place and at first I hated it. The second half was pretty strong and by the end, I thought it was great. I think I’d benefit from repeated listens. Given the mixed bag, rating it a strong 3.
I could not pay attention to this but it was fine. Waste of a spot though.
Had to find this one on YouTube. Early century alternative/indie music. Nothing really stood out. Fine but I don't need to hear it again.
A real mixed bag between the bangers on the album and just alright songs. You've got some brilliant string sections in some songs, and overall amazing instrumentation with some of the most bland vocals i've heard. some misses some hits lmaoo
I thought it had a cool unique sound. It was an interesting blend of rock and electronic.
This was good. A nice solid album, smack in the center of 3 land. I liked that it fit together as a cohesive album with a rise and fall, a beginning and an end. I'd listen to this again. I don't think I'd buy it, but I'd totally borrow it.
I really wish this album wasn't afraid of the more experimental and interesting stuff it has going on.
Weird. Some fun, some pretty bad.
This is one of the first bands I'd never even heard of, and ... not sure I'd come back to it. That said, "No Sympathy" got my attention.
This album is all over the place. I don't hate a lot of it. Super interesting.
It's Not the End of the World?
I mean it was fairly interesting, with some cool production choices but I wouldn't come back to it
Very inconsistent album. Some songs are great some are slogs.
This was OK. Nothing special.
Thought I'd like this more but a lot of it I think needs to grow. Beyond tug title track which I vaguely knew not much stuck.
Some of it is Great, it is trippy and calming and just all around pleasnant. But some where In the middle of the album there are a few sons that are the exact opposite
Yea I liked it upon first pass. Probably needs another listen or two. Never listed to this until today.
The layering was effective on some songs and meh on others. 2.8.
This was unmemorable and fine. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5
I liked this one more than I thought I would
Interesting.
Eclectic and creative, but the vocals leave a little something to be desired. An interesting mix of genre, but kinda meh across the album as a whole. 3 stars for being diverse enough to keep my interest through the whole album though
3/5
First time listening to this band and it won't be the last. Couldn't rate it higher because i didn't listen to the whole thing
A couple of the songs gave me Elvis Costello vibes. It's not bad, but I don't know if I'll revisit this one. I did like Run! Christian, Run! and Sidewalk Serfer Girl.
Not bad but there were enough Oasis soundalikes already in 2001.
How come you can never find just the original album release anymore. Why is the a 2 part multi hour remaster. Who asked for that. I want coffee flavored coffee. Anyway. This is…interesting. It reminds me of Flaming Lips. Which is a bad thing for my personal taste. It never sounds bad but it never hooks me.
Interesting prog psychedelia record
Nothing too exciting for me in this. Will give a 3 as there are some nice songs though.
Have heard of this band before but had never listened to them. Reminded me of a softer version of Blur but if they took a little bit of acid. Enjoyed to mash up of genres and some great musicianship. Would give 3.5
On the whole not too bad. Lots of variation between tracks and some cool moments and surprisingly dark lyrics "I don't feel sorry for thee, you deserve to die" for example. Heard some slight "metal" vocals at one point too? Not really something I'll go back to though.
Aika perus altsurokkia taas, aika kevyttä sellaista. No Sympathyssä aika erikoinen dubstep/glitch/breakcore/hardcore/acid lopetus. Parhaat: No Sympathy, Receptacle For The Respectable, Run! Christian, Run!
nice sounding album
Liked: Receptacle for the Respectable, Shoot Doris Day, Fragile Happiness Loved: Juxtapozed With U
Some fun, quirky tracks sprinkled here and there made the album sufficiently enjoyable
primera escucha, hippie
I didn't really like this. I think it was just a little bit too much for me. Sounded like TV show music. I don't really know, there were songs I liked and then songs I really didn't like. It's just meh to me overall. . I usually love blends of genres and I can see how it's quite well done. I just didn't connect with it. I think this could be an album that grows on me over time. But this is not over time, this is one listen. Maybe it will show up again later in my life and I'll be a different person, prepared to enjoy it more
I'm finding pretty much all the britpop on this list disappointing. Lead singer sounds weirdly like Damon Albarn, and the music reminded me of Flaming Lips. I appreciate what they're doing here even if it's not for me. 3/5.
pas un autre album british what the heck is going on in No Sympathy Presidential Suite est pas pire
i don't remember anymore but i listend to it yesterday. it was a long day
I really like a few of these songs after hearing them 20 years ago. Still do!
Ok?
love about half of the songs on here, but as a record it's not one of SFA's best
like their other stuff more
Not bad. Early indie sound. Of Montreal really took a lot from this album. It's pretty dated sounding now though.
At its best is very reminiscent of blur. But it’s not often at its best. Some mid indie rock with chirpy synths, it’s kitschy and not bad but sometimes drags in the after song interlude moments. A lot of the more experimental parts feel like they fall flat, which is a shame as those are usually my favourite parts of the albums. Receptacle was one of the songs I was particularly enjoying but the ending completely fucked it. some of the lyrics are very cringey, receptacle is pretty bad but juxtaposed with u was straight up awful.
Not for me
3/5
Eclectic record incorporating pop, prog, punk, jungle, electronica, techno and death metal. Early 2000s. Quite varied and chaotic, original. Takes some unhinged turns from Britpop into entirely different genres.
Interesting, a bit like an alternate Flaming Lips. Nothing really grabbed me but many good musical ideas 3.4
Pretty cool, not a ton of replayability
The cover looked cool, but right off it was kind of a letdown. Later songs got better pulling it up to a 3
ok
Brit pop never really been my thing although there were some interesting songs here. Sidewalk serfer girl, a touch sensitive, no sympathy in particular
5/10
Meh
3.2 2x catch up 12/5 sfo to ATL
pretty weird but does sound good
They received a score boost because Spike from Notting Hill was once a member
It was pretty good, even if there wasn't anything that particularly stood out to me as a hit. It's a long album, especially if you're listening to the 20th anniversary version.
decent, not the best superfurrys album
Bizarre. Some parts were cool
Not super interesting for most of it, picks up a bit towards the middle. A lot of it feels kinda similar to Quebec by Ween, there's just a little too many elements that just don't exactly fit, making it feel kinda noisy. For sure at it's best when it's more sentimental. Fav Track: Run! Christian, Run!
I don't think it's a bad album, but I also couldn't pay attention to it. It has some interesting sections here and there, but I struggle to find it rise from background. It does start with a more aggressive riff, to remind you that you've completed a listen! Hurray!
It's the Furries. You know what you're getting with them. Quirky, indie pop with dashes of electronic bubbles and Bacarach style strings. I am of a certain age however, and think that you really only need their first album and Radiator. Once you've listened to these two peak albums you don't really need the rest. Best Tracks: Sidewalk Serfer Girl; (Drawing) Rings Around The World; Juxtaposed With U
It's a nice record. I found it better than "Fuzzy Logic", more polished and they show a more developed sound. Again, the most remarkable aspect of their work is how experimental and bold they are when mixing styles and how they take tracks far into weird territory (see the ending of "Receptacle for the Respectable"). The second half of the album is much stronger than the first. Same as the previous record, my main criticism is the singing, while it has improved, Rhys' tone and delivery are not my cup of tea. They can also be a touch too derivative. My favourite track (and the first one I like from the band) was "[A] Touch Sensitive", I loved the heavy beat and the weird synth, it's a dark trip-hop beat and it works so well. I would've loved to hear more of this. "Shoot Doris Day" and "Presidential Suite" were also good. Overall, the record is nice but not that noteworthy for me.
This album took me some time to rate, because it seemed interesting, but for whatever reason I couldn't get into it.
Sounded Pink Floyd-ish I'd say.
I get why this is on the list, second half is very unusual. His voice bores me to tears though!
So, that was interesting. Some solid tracks - but then you get to No Sympathy and it's just like 'wait what the hell?!?!'. 3. It's fine - not sure it belongs on this list though tbh
So, like . . . Welsh Flaming Lips? Nah, y’know what? I’m aight.
This album certainly covers some ground, with a healthy mix of genres and styles. Unfortunately this means that whilst there are some good tracks on here, the rest are just kind of ... okay? When they get it right, it's great, otherwise it was largely inoffensive.
I ran out of patience for this album about half way through. There are moments of really great song writing here but a lot of the experimentation that happens on this album doesn't really do anything for me. It feels like they want to be seen as "trippy and weird" more than they're actually interested in exploring any of the ideas they bring up on this record. listen to early ween or the flaming lips instead
weird but fun!
Weird, but it grows on you. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)
Only really know them because of the first album and that was not really mind blowing. I am intrigued as to why they are even on this list. lets see what it is like....Yeah..it is pretty average. The last 2 songs are ok, but it is nothing exciting. Not sure why it is on this list - 3 stars
A very lush album with some big melodies. Too long, but I appreciate the exposure to something I’d never have heard otherwise.
Still not convinced this isn’t Blur.
Felt like a cross between guster and the beatles, with random sounds. Pretty interesting, haven't heard of this band before.
Hey, I enjoyed it. Weird energy, a bit poppy but never really driving; almost lyrical adult pop. Really enjoyed Presidential Suite, apparently a pretty deep cut; Juxtapozed was fine. Nothing's getting saved, but fine.
Sounded okay, an interesting mix of genres.
I was disappointed in this after Fuzzy Logic. It was fine but it mostly just passed me by. 2.75/5
There's some cool genre-shifting stuff going on here that I'm a fan of. If this album played around with that a bit more, I think that I would be more interested in it. The rest of the album is fine, but doesn't catch my interest as much. Favorite track: "No Sympathy." I liked "[A] Touch Sensitive" quite a bit as well.
I quite liked the indie tones
3.5 really
I want to like this more but I keep finding myself zoning out while listening to it
Has some ups and downs
I don't know if it's the band's name or not, but this album reminded me of the word "fuzzy." It's pleasant with a couple of standouts. Most of the songs sort of ran together in my head, though.
This was interesting but I wasn't the biggest fan. It kind of just went by for me.
Honestly a bit too weird to keep my attention. At a certain point I couldn't contain the urge to just listen to Ween or The Flaming Lips. These guys seem like the Welsh version of the aforementioned bands. It's definitely interesting, but others have done this style better.
Lite spännande mix av experimentella grejer vs lite mer normala låtar, överlag intressant men inget som stack ut supermycket. Helt ok!
Muppigt namn men lät bra
You can tell they cared about the mixing. +half a star for Paul McCartney chewing sounds
We get it, you don’t tame yourself that seriously.
2.5/5
Very on the fence between 3 and 4
It was fine, but not that memorable to me.
Your neutralness, a middle of the road album! My god. Issue a beige alert!
I enjoyed the slower, more downbeat songs on here but if it were an album with only those kinds of songs from these guys I am not sure I would have enjoyed it as much. The other songs did well to JUXTAPOZE and made the slower songs stand out more. A bit backloaded, but with a fantastic opener, this album is representative of an experience I have a lot with this project. 'I have never heard of these guys' which becomes 'Wow this shit rocks'. The band are clearly having fun exploring genres ands styles on this album and even in some songs (Receptacle for the Respectable and No Sympathy, though the former is kind of shit and when it started I thought it was a Smash Mouth song and feels as though it was made to play during a happy montage of a 2000s film). Well-produced, fun, a few misses here and there but a worthwhile listen and definitely something I would have dismissed if it came up on my Spotify radio. Glad we got this. Highlights: Alternate Route to Vulcan Street, Shoot Doris Day, No Sympathy, Presidential Suite, Run! Christian, Run!
This album hit....way harder than I thought it would after the name and the band name. Shows you what I know. I don't know if there was a standout track, but they were all solid. Definitely worth throwing in the rotation.
I was expecting a lot lighter experience, something akin to almost all other brit pop/rock I've so far heard on this project. I'm not hating it. I actually like that it has a lot of stuff on it, electronic stuff right after rock song and straight into a bond-theme-esque like pop song. But by the end of this how ever, I was more than ready to move on to other things. Wikipedia's description for this album still reads like... I don't know, stupid. Like "incorporating death metal", REALLY?! WTF does that even refer to?.
Couldn’t really get into this album, it seemed to be all over the place, hopping between genres and it just felt like it was trying to be too clever and it just came off as chaotic
Sounds like the backing track to a Gorillaz album
started strong but fell off
Not familiar with Super Furry Animals at all. Knew of them but never bothered to explore them. So a blank piece of paper today when I listened. Album began brightly and grabbed my initial attention but soon tired and began to sound the same. An OK album but nothing special. 2.5/5 18/4/25
Definitely different and interesting. Did t really capture my imagination that much though.
Early 00’s psychedelia was alright. Man this a bit too British for my taste though.
pretty good but mostly a mixed bag
This wasn't bad. I enjoyed the eclectic genre weaving throughout the album. This was a pleasant surprise for me.
i get super whatever vibes from this. like i think there are neat elements but my overall vibe is whatever
There's some cool stuff in here. I liked some of it, but some of it was a bit too out there or a bit too plain. A little too disjointed for 4 stars - but not a terrible listen.
A diverse and lush soundscape that indicates a willingness to experiment. Sadly, some of it doesn't work.
Quite the unusual album, based on the cover I expected psychedelic electronic music, in the genres I saw indie and britpop and expected that, but in the end the album was something different for me altogether. One of the favorite things on the album for me was that it dabbles in prog, I think I would prefer it much more if it had more of these elements across the board. I liked all of the unexpected elements, death metal was mentioned, didn't think I would actually hear it after 4-5 pop songs, but it did come for a brief moment on vocals. There are also some blues/country elements, every now and again there is a nice guitar riff. Another genre which found it's way into the album is techno. Somehow, all of this works and nothing feels out of place on this album. I think the album had great potential, it manifested a whole lot, but not the whole thing, at least in my opinion. This could have been even more insane and wacky. Glad I listened to the album, one of the biggest surprises on the list so far.
The stuff I thought was notable was when the band leans into the electronic sound. Past that, it's early 00's "indie" alt rock.
Thought I’d like this more than I did, but enjoyed listening to it.
Bueno
Weird but I liked it a lot !
Remember them being popular with NME etc back in the day.. idk, this couldn’t hold my interest for long. Nothing grabbed me and engaged my interest. Suspect it may be a grower but it’s never going to get the chance. Oh well
It's ok but a bit noisy at times.
Psychedelic, fun and funky. Elements from lots of genres and eras. A little noisy at times though
Not essential, for sure, but a really good, eclectic indie rock album from the 00s. 3.5☆
Weird and kind of all over the place, but not in a bad way. The latter half was better than the first IMO. I'll give it a 3.5/5 I wanna give it a 4 but its not quite there. Good album though
As I listened to this album I couldn't help but think about the strangely odd but catchy song design. Reminds me of Beck, but with lyrics that make a bit more sense. Some songs were a bit slow for my liking. Fs- Rade Winds
This band is like Gorillaz and Parquet Courts combined, and they write all their songs like the Beatles. No sympathy could be a Death Grips beat. I got quite a bit of enjoyment from this album. A bit long, but not bad.
This was a lot of fun. Look forward to returning to it.
Oh yeah! I recognize this Rings Around the World song. It's like a British version of whatever band that is that plays the theme song from Friends. After that track, it devolves into thrift store smash and grab. People call it eclectic, but it's just a lack of self-awareness and vision. One good thing that came out of this is that Spotify started playing Elbow's Cast of Thousands after this album ended. Extra star for that!
This is possibly the most juxtaposed sound I remember hearing. It doesn’t so much blend rock and electronic sounds as it jumps suddenly between them. Odd yet still intriguing.
I would probably give it a 3.5 but I can’t give it a four. There were parts of it that were outstanding. A very different and interesting album.
First time I listened to this I got bored. Second time (now) it was a bit better, maybe because I was in the mood for it. 7/10
Not sure if this is a top banger for me, but interesting enoiugh.
This started out pretty good. read a lot of buzz on it... but then... disc 2... nd then ... disc 3. Yawn.
Mom can we get Blur? We have Blur at home. Another British whatever that’s only on this list because of there the author is from. We haven’t gotten a single Japanese, Chinese, Scandinavian, Brazilian, German, Portuguese, or other language album but we’ve gotten a ton of bland forgettable British pop/rock. Bad list? No! Bad YOU
Certainly infectious. I think I'm picking up on the Welsh renaissance vibes. Geez don't you have to love a guy named Gruff? The overarching pop presence serves their detours well. Inventive, expansive, engaging. No Sympathy shows just how crazy they can get.
Welsh rock with a twist. Pretty good
I listened to these guys a bit back when this album came out. The biggest hit on the album, Juxtaposed with U, is definitely my favorite. It's still has some appeal for me but thought I'd love it more than I did.
There’s so many British bands on this list that I’ve never heard of before and they’re almost all mediocre.
Cool - but I prefer their other albums actually
⭐⭐⭐ 5/10 Couldn't decide between 2 or 3 stars, but giving them the benefit of the doubt as it has some interesting parts in the album. Such as: the almost grunty vocals in 'Respectable for the respectable' and the strange acid synths at the endof 'No sympathy'. Surprising elements like these kept me from turn off the albums and give it 2 stars. The band reminds me of idiot pilot and Ned's atomic dustbin. Which, just like super furry animals are pretty average rock bands but have interesting elements. The bands are in no way influential (therefore it is strange that it made the list) but at least the listener can act cool and snobby by knowing the band.
Actually not all bad. Some nice stuff in there but won’t return
Unique, maybe give’em one or more chances in the future
I enjoyed this quite a bit more than their debut album, Fuzzy Logic. The vocals were simplified. The psych-folk sound is fairly chill overall but after a couple listens, nothing really stuck for me. I just don’t think Super Furry Animals is for me. My favourite track on this one is actually the one track with no lyrics at all, Run! Christian, Run! I just really enjoyed that they leaned into the Psych sound on that one. It was fine overall. 3 stars
Just an album that was truly all over the place. It was like 50/50 if I liked a particular song. No Sympathy was intriguing because I was digging the song and then it hard turned to a fiasco ending. I think there's enough I liked to give it a solid 3. Almost a 4...
This is a 3.5 Enjoyable album. Very likely to grow on me with a few more listens.
Never even heard of this band, pretty curious about it, sounds like it's British indie? I don't hate this, the songs are pretty great, the vocals aren't great and are pretty buried in the mix but I still kinda like it, it reminds me a little bit of some of the "power pop" albums I've had on here in the past.
Singer sounds a bit like Elvis Costello, at least to my very dumb untrained ears
Not a bad album and fairly eclectic collection of ballads, pop, rock etc. But nothing that memorable either
This album is a lot more interesting than their other album on this list, but I'm still not super crazy about it. Something about his voice and the melodies he chooses is just a little too cheesy/cringy for me. A very creative album and a step up both song writing and production wise from their other album on this list. Also its Death Metal influence is highly exaggerated, which is a bummer. High 3.
Solid album. Enjoyed having it on and picked up a few new songs to go back to.
I don’t know what to make of this album. Great production though.
A bit all over the place, sometimes sounds like they're trying to imitate The Beatles, but overall I like it. I especially like the more Psych-Rock oriented songs.
pretty good, fun sound. a good range of sound, as well
This was better than I thought.
Ring ring!
there once *were* rings around the world, you know
Aftur kemur þetta band og það losnar ekki við fordómahugsunina mína þar sem ég sé nafnið, plötuumslagið og ég hugsa að þetta hljóti að vera leiðinlegt band. Í þetta sinn hugsaði ég: "Ég hef séð þetta áður, bíddu var þetta ekki leiðinlegt?" Svo er þetta bara ekkert leiðinlegt. Þetta er bara fínt en það komu kaflar sem ég hefði alveg viljað sleppa að hlusta á.
It has some cool moments but I feel it’s bit repetitive and too long.
probably ok, but I'm a little bored of this stuff.
super super cool!
This is a band that I was totally unfamiliar with…I liked some of the songs, and some parts of some of the songs. I still had about three more songs left to listen to when I wrote this review, but it is probably three stars for me. I may or may not give it another listen; I kind of wish that these selections came out every other day.
SUPER FURRY? That’s pretty furry. I’m going to spend this album wondering if they can live up to this moniker. How furry we talkin here? Like round sort of fat furry, or more of a shaggy type style? Hopefully the music doesn’t sound like Shaggy. Let’s go. I like the sounds in this first song. Interesting, understated yet interesting. Very cool atmosphere. Ooh. This might be up my alley of weird. Well. Maybe. I like the stabs of indie rock riffing. The “trip hop” sections are a little less cool but I am enjoying this one so far. The echoing vocal refrain sounds haunting. Trails off a bit, but mostly good. This one is fairly nice. Something I can’t put my finger on exactly that makes it a little Disney channel-y? Andy the repetition sort of takes it into the gutter for a bit. Nah this one is middling to poor. We do need a receptacle for the respectable. Good people in the trash. From now on, I want exclusively repugnant individuals running everything and being the loudest voices. Oh wait. Anyway, the song is not repugnant. Decent. Whoa. Straight from the streets of Cardiff buddy. Pretty cool instrumental hip hop song actually. So many genres here. Back to blah. This song is lifeless. 1-2-3-4 with lame lyrics. This didn’t need to be here at all. Alright, we’ve truly entered the boring song portion of the album. The tevirw can just stay the same here. Replete with bah bah bahs and not even cool ones. The trippy electronic ending is out of place but at least has elevated my heart rate from the coma like state I was existing in. Barry white and Oasis have a baby and then the singer comes in and is an AI Sublime. No that’s not AL sublime. We’re talking artificial intelligence. This song is terrible, but man is it an interesting combination of things. Can’t even hate it to be honest. Back to whatever. This review sucks, I deeply apologize to the loyal readers. I have to work. Only so much time in a day. A motivational Forrest Gump style request or a dire warning to people of a certain faith. These are the questions that get me through songs like this. Although I believe the inclusion of bad country completes the genres. They’ve all appeared on here. This song is nice. Beautiful melody, interesting sounds. The song has woken me up finally. What can you say about the super furry animals that hasn’t already been said?? Presumably almost anything as I’ve never heard anybody discuss this band even once. I suppose I don’t hang out in Welsh alternative music circles (often anyway). The album started out with a thrill and carried that spirit sporadically. I feel like there were a bunch of random, boring songs that had all momentum screech to a halt, but the interesting points were so odd, I’ll probably be thinking about this one for awhile. That alone makes Rings around the World a worthwhile experience. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: Alternate Route to Vulcan Street, [A] Touch Sensitive, Juxtaposed with U, Fragile Happiness
This is a bit mixed for me, there's some kind of boring, early 2000s indie kind of rock like Presidential Suite that I'm not too fussed about, but then you get some more weird and interesting tracks like Receptacle for the Respectable that starts laid back and sleazy and turns a bit gritty towards the end. You can't fault the dynamism; they definitely added plenty of layers and things going on It's also a bit inconsistent in quality. Alternate Route to Vulcan Street is a cool, dynamic opener, then I'm not crazy for anything for a few tracks until Receptacle. Good overall, though, could be a grower Highlights: Receptacle for the Respectable, Alternate Route to Vulcan Street
Um yea, I liked this more than I didn't, but the sound wasn't interesting enough to keep me locked in. Closer to a 3.5 than a 3.
I knew Super Furry Animals by name only. I had no idea what to expect, and this album kept me on my toes the whole time. I think it deserves another listen at some point. I liked tracks 2 and 3, and the transition between them was very satisfying. No Sympathy was the most surprising song. Those genres usually don't coexist. I think I dig it? Super Furry Animals, I don't know if I'm in love with you (yet), but I won't hold that against you. 3 stars for now.
The production is tremendously varied and clever. There’s a lovely old-school psychedelic feel to everything. That being said, I wanted to like it better, but in the end I felt that the melodies themselves were just ok, and after a while, it started to drag. Still, enjoyable, if not exactly everything I wanted it to be.
pfff
It was ok
It was fine. Few songs pretty good. Overall good. Nothing astounding.
I loved the last album we had by SFA, Hanging with Howard Marx. This album was decent but a little too out there with spacey sound effects, and didn't have many stand out tracks. Favorite songs were: 3. (Drawing) Rings Around the World 10. Juxtapozed With U 5/10
All over the place, but not bad.
I struggled with this because it wasn't bad, I just didn't find it very good. There's no comparison I can make to describe the sound, which I guess makes them unique?
Honestly, pretty dull. Warmed up to me by the end
I once watched an episode of the chase or pointless or something like that I don’t remember the question but the potential answers were supergrass supertramp and super furry animals. Now I’m acquainted with all bands I must say one band is MUCH worse than the other two… that band is super furry animals. There’s something a tad blur-esque about this album in particular sidewalk serfer girl. But the singer doesn’t have the charm the way Damon Albarn did on Parklife or modern life is rubbish. Then it’s not the end of the world reminded me of ‘all the young dudes’ … If Bowie/ mott the hoopla we’re depressed. The rest of it just kinda seeped in the back of my head so It’s a 3/5
3- Stars (7/15)
