Reviews (page 7 of 8)
It's OK, but I don't really enjoy Alice's exploration of distasteful themes.
Another one of those “I guess you just had to be there” albums.
Rock 😴 and nothing that really grabbed my attention.
Alice Cooper is a weird dude.
Alice Cooper looks like a skinny Ozzy Osbourne but sings like he’s got a megaphone attached to his face. I’m not sure where the energy comes from, but he delivers on every track. There’s a lot more talking/screaming versus actual singing but I have a feeling that’s what his fans would prefer. The background music is serviceable with nothing more than flashes of cool riffs. Many of the lyrics have a dark undertone that matches Cooper’s appearance. I could stand to listen to this a couple of times and then would need to move on.
I’ve always found it hard to take Alice Cooper seriously. The whole image is so much schtick and always felt juvenile. Now, having listened to an album in full, I can confirm that the lyrics are basic and painfully obvious and the simplistic, sophomoric musical compositions are not performed by anyone that could be called a virtuoso on their instrument. Like a bad night at a high school Battle of the Bands.
I thought Alice Cooper would sound very differently. In the end, what he actually sounded like wasn't much better. Album just kind of happened, didn't find much of interest. I love the dead was ok.

For whatever reason (the eyeliner?) I've had Alice Cooper pegged in my head as metal - but this album (along with the 1 other we've had) is so much more glam and theatrical than I expected. While there are some body horror and political lyrics that give the slightest punk/metal vibes, it mostly feels like Rocky Horror Picture than other hard/metal contemporaries. Either way, ultimately not my thing.
Genere: Hard Rock Anno: 1973 Curiosità: Copper said “The whole idea behind this albums was exploiting the idea that people do have sick perversions.” Infatti per quel tempo per Alice Cooper era l’album all’apice della sua carriera
a bit boring to be honest. feels a bit dated.
No private session used for Spotify. Alice Cooper is someone who associated more with his gimmick than his music. I know a few songs from him, but despite how long he has been making music, it's odd I only know a few of his songs. After listening to a whole album I can tell it's a lot of theater and somewhat bland music.
With a driving rhythm section, strange lyrical topics and a screeching lead singer, this album is certainly interesting. It's not bad by any stretch, and has some memorable melodies, even if the sound does get a bit repetitive at times. But it is energetic, and relatively catchy, and I can see it's appeal to 70s hard rock enjoyers. Would I actively listen to it? No. But I wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio.
An Alice Cooper Album. 3/10
Maybe I could appreciate it more if it were a live show - or a musical. But as an LP it‘s mostly silly (and musically quite tame)
I dig some Alice records, but not necessarily this one.
An album that captures a moment of eclosis: the glam butterfly emerging from the chrysalsis of garage. An album that asks: what if Ziggy Stardust was a SICKO and TWISTED?! It's basic rock and roll played for high drama, leaning into the HORROR persona and SHOCKING SICKENING REPULSIVE content that would come to define the band. Even if the spectactle of the band was something DEMONIC, these are still 60s guys at heart who can't away from the damn harmonica and white boy blues rock rhythms and so musically this is pretty boring stuff. Wish it was half as SATANIC and SCARY as the pearl-clutchers feared...
Only ever heard No More Mr Nice Guy from this. But I kinda liked this whole album more than most of the popular stuff Alice Cooper has put out.
Not a fan. Consistent song quality, but quite boring, stilted, and kind of cartoonish. It seems like when it came out in 1973, the instrumentation would have been really new and influential, and maybe the daft attitude and style wouldn't have been seen as so silly, but without any nostalgia attached to the songs, they mostly kind of suck. No More Mr. Nice Guy is decent, Sick Things really, realllly sucks
It was mediocre at best. Some catchy tunes.
Mix David Bowie with the Beatles and pour over a Halloween sauce.
It’s okay. I don’t have a taste for Alice Cooper, the schtick feels really contrived. And these tunes have a phony weirdness to them that’s off putting. Kind of dumb really.
Maybe influential for its time, but seems average rock
This is a weird dude, but it's clear that that's his intention. I don't think he takes himself too seriously, and his songs are like a carnival sideshow or a silly kind of shock (necromancy, really?), although some of the music is decent. No More Mr. Nice Guy is a keeper. 2.5 stars seem about right.
Corny
not my cup of tea
He has a couple songs I appreciate, but I don’t think I have ever listened to an entire Alice Cooper album all the way through. Maybe, back in the late 70s. He must have a greatest hits collection that someone’s older brother had. Nothing particularly notable here for me, struggling between 2 and 3. I think with the title ‘Raped and Freezin’, I’m going with 2. The title track and ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy’ are not enough to overcome this.
More like a 2.5, its fine, but not interesting
Half of the songs on this record sound like what Dirk Diggler was cooking up in the studio in "Boogie Nights"
Alice Cooper straddles the line here between a hard rock album and a campy theatrical album. Musically, it works better as the latter. The songs mostly settle in the medium-hard range, with some good guitar solos but a dearth of interesting riffs and soaring choruses. The most over-the-top tracks, like the closer, are more effectively sold. But therein lies the biggest weakness of this album. It seems to strive for a goofy horror vibe, but it's surprisingly tame in most places. There are songs about such shocking things as...performing on stage, running for president, and not helping ladies across the street anymore. And then the closer pushes things way too far in the other direction; it's definitely gross, but not in a funny way. Maybe when this was released it was more shocking, but listening to it now, most of the things it tries don't quite work.
Didn’t speak to me.
Again, heard this from my brother's room many times. Comparativly, it's okay, but thank goodness he discovered punk rock, knowarramean?
That was dross.
Never been a big fan of Alice (don't let my mate Ian hear me say that) but this was pretty good. Mid to high 2s.
Not unlistenable but I couldn’t pick out a single track on this album to remember even if you paid me
This type of classic rock/dad rock is just so off putting to me
I don't think it was meant to be funny, but Alice Cooper is such an edgelord I kept laughing at how completely ridiculous this album was - its like he sat down and tried to figure out what would be shocking, weird and spooky but then decided to put it to light-rock-panto-music - with a bit of harmonica for good measure (death to harmonicas). In someways this reminded me of Flight of the Concords - except that they are actually trying to be funny, unlike this which maybe hasn't aged that well and is just a bit embarrassing. Maybe you had to be there and I/m born a few decades to late? Not on this album, but I remember my brother being OBSESSED with the Alice Cooper song 'Poison' when he was about 10! I didn't mind the drums in Billion Dollar Babies, but lyrics about SA and necrophilia (even if they weren't supposed to be serious) can get in the fucking bin.
Not my favourite genre
A few catchy tunes, but this has not aged well (what was i thinking when I was 13?)
hm, mag ja Metal und Rock Musik, aber der Alice Cooper-Funke ist bei mir nicht übergesprungen. Find die Stimme leicht anstrengend und manche Lieder wirkten wie Jahrmarktsmusik
ganska gött sound ändå men lite trött o tråkigt på nåt sätt
Just wasn't very interesting. It was just "Alice Cooper Album" Which doesn't get high marks from me generally.
Not for me
Not my favourite. Couldn't really place it. Not really heavy metal. Not really rock.
Oof. Want a whole album that sounds like Elected? This is the one.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
Plodding and nearly circus-like in its opener to singing a little too gleefully about SA, this may be one of Mr. Cooper's more famous works, but I'd rather have Mr. Nice Guy spinning wax than the snake backed by horns on many of these tracks. What offends my ears more than the lyrics is the cliched stomp blues rock that's being peddled here. This is some lowest common denominator rock, all arena-ready and tired-sounding. When the shock is revealed as predictable schlock, without a critical bite, what's the point?
Super generic, sorry Alice, I'm not being a nice guy today I guess.
conceptually i like alice cooper, but i don't think i've ever sat down and listened to an alice cooper album. why does he sound like he's doing a mick jagger impression for most of it? a couple songs were neat though maybe i just liked alice cooper's cameo in wayne's world.
I was expecting a lot more than this based on how shocking Alice Cooper allegedly was to audiences like my mother.
This really just isn't my thing, but some of it was fun.
Glitter and glam, but not really more than that..
When everybody rose, the Reverend Smith He, he recognized me And punched me in the nose, he said
For something purporting to be shock rock, I expected this to push the envelope a little more musically. It's...perfectly fine. No More Mr Nice Guy and the title track are still worth a listen, I can't say I want to play the whole album again.
Billion Dollar Babies More listenable for me than Queen in its theatricality, but it's actually not that interesting beyond that. The campy schlockiness is initially fun, but it wears thin fairly quickly, and ultimately the songs just aren’t that great, apart from No More Mr Nice Guy, which is a great mid 70s rocker. I was probably expecting it to be more fun and enjoyable overall, but its lack of musical quality makes it a bit of an effort to get through, and I can’t really imagine coming back to it. 2. 👶👶 Playlist submission: No More Mr Nice Guy
I remember the pushback on these bands when I was young. They were dangerous! Ridiculous. It’s theatre.
This wasn't special to me...
a bit too quirky.

Hat mich nicht gepackt.
Not for me
There are a couple of good tracks but it's just not for me.
Classic, but not compelling. Except for the 'Poison' song, never was a Cooper's admirer.
Kinda forgettable. Probably a 2.5 star
Not great.
a couple classic rock songs, otherwise not that great
1970’s glam rock…so bad. Basic, theatrical, shallow, over produced. 2nd spin was a better listen.
Strong start, including what may be one of the best opening tracks of the 70s. Then bottoms out by the 5th or 6th track. 2.5/5
Not for me this whatsoever
I could tell instantly that this wasn’t for me. 2.5/5
For me, just another bland hard rock album. Unfinished Sweet had an interesting part. A bit weird and drony. And that's it, nothing more interesting to say about the album, since I don't like hard rock.
Threatened excitement but never gave it
I saw Alice Cooper live once. It was a good time. Listening to this wasn’t.
3/10 - It was annoying and unenjoyable. I did not really like his voice or most of the instrumentation. Mary Ann was different enough to have some good parts
Fine instrumentals, weird edgy lyrics, nothing particularly interesting or memorable
Never liked Cooper, and this album didn't change that.
ughhhh okay glam beetle juice
It has some massive bangers ("Billion Dollar Babies" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy"), but the rest of the album is very subpar.
Det är nog inte så bra ändå.
Fun but forgettable. Didn't know he could be such straightforward rock. Hello Hooray is my favourite. I like the Bond sample in Unfinished Sweet.
Seems like a nice record but it was not for my taste,
There’s so much good guitar music from this era, this is not that.
First time actually listening to Alice Cooper. Didn't sound like I thought it would - but that doesn't mean I like it or think it is good.
# Album Name: Billion Dollar babies # Artist: Alice Cooper # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Cant really say i enjoyed this one. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No
You're a teenager in the 1970s. You love rock music. Your older sibling was able to experience the pinnacle of the genre with late 60's/early 70's releases from the Beatles, Stones, Dylan etc. You were a little too young for that scene. As a reaction to those albums, rock music proceeded down two paths - singer/songwriters like Neil Young, Van Morrison, and a harder, more dramatic sound. Teenagers rocked out to Led Zeppelin, as well as Kiss and other stuff. Which brings you to Alice Cooper. A huge rock star at the time, but with the exception of an interesting track here and there, do you really need to hear Alice Cooper some 50 years later? I'm gonna say no.
Don't really get Alice Cooper. I think you had to be there at the time, because this is very boring for something that is supposed to be "shocking". Maybe his live shows were great or something. Also I'm not really sure what the point of Raped & Freezing is...was there a joke in there or something? Who was the victim?
Generic 70s rock. It’s a shame that so much of this is part of the 1001 albums as it all sounds the same.
Not a huge fan here, it's ok rock and no more mr nice guy is pretty great
This is actually pretty mediocre. Not much to say.
Can't be fucked with Alice Cooper, especially when I saw I had Document, Stephen Stills and Elliot Smith ahead of me to enjoy.
Felt generic and like the gimmick of Cooper was doing most of the work. There's a lot of classic rock on this list that i'd listen to before revisiting this album.
Didn’t hook me at all
This was a lot more playful and poppy than I was expecting. Still not my thing - especially when the guitar solos kick in. But so so.
Pretty standard Alice Cooper. Weird and edgy yet some half decent songs. Grow up Alice!
Alice Cooper is a live act. I don't find myself listening to studio albums, but I would love to see a show. The songs alone are pretty mid. But not extremely bad.
Bland rock… I Love The Dead is not exactly a good song but at least it features some exciting instrumentalization. (Also, Cooper sounds so much like Paul McCartney on Mary Ann.)
I certainly did not expect Alice Cooper to be so glammy and quirky - at multiple parts in this album, it even reminded me of bands like Mott the Hoople. Kind of makes me wish he had fully gone for the glam route, instead of the campy hard rock route that he takes just as often.
Elected Billion Dollar Babies No More Mr. Nice Guy
Scare your parents in the 70's! Get some Alice! Don't really care for this. But at least it's somewhat musical. Easy to see where Marilyn Manson found the shtick. But not a great listen for me.
There's already a good Alice Cooper album on here, why include a mediocre one?
No more Mr. Nice Guy is the only hit here. Some of these songs did not age well.
I actually like Alice Cooper, but this album did not resonate with me.
Was ok
album that is carried by the one hit, that doesn't hold up to other classic rock songs.
Nahh brother. 3/10
Multiple listens and trying to enjoy but it just passed me by each time. Not offensive by any means, but not inspiring.
The Hungarian prodigy is at it again Well, I've asked for a necrophilia song myself, so in a way it's my fault too. But at the same time it is the only good song from the album
Boring
Raped and freezin? Really?
I like some Alice Cooper but this album was a bit weird for me.
cada dia com mais preguiça do gênero musical intitulado rock 'n' roll
I only liked 1 song
dam
There us just an unreal disconnect between how badass Alice Cooper looked in the 70s and how bad AND ass his music was
Feels a bit dated- no more mr nice guy great track though
Liked the first 2 songs, close to liking some of the others but found them a bit bland? some were a bit too musical theatre for me
2.5☆/5 09.10.2024
Didn't think I'd like it at first but surprisingly decent. High 2.
not my cup of tea. campy, & over the top at times. reminded me of Meatloaf
5/10 This was kind of dumb. Campy and often musically fun, but dumb This hardly seems like hard rock or metal to me, more like glam rock I’m sure it is being done in a knowing way, but it does come across quite insincerely Best: Unfinished Sweet
Well, that was weird. It was occasionally fine, but it largely didn't work for me. 2.3
This was not what I expected of this album at all, having not listened to Alice Cooper before, beyond the hits. Not entirely sure why people were shocked by this in the seventies; it's so obviously theatrical and tongue in cheek. Some decent songs but Sick Things is pretty bad.
No More Mr. Nice Guy //
作者的其他一些作品可以,但不是这张专辑
Simplistic rock style not worthy of a best of the best list. Found myself skipping half played tracks.
Couple of great tracks, but this album sounds lazy. One of those albums that came out in the 70s without the power. Didn't quite grab me.
I enjoyed some of them, but Alice Cooper is not appealing to me
Alice Cooper is okay, but I've never been a huge fan. Listenable, but I wouldn't seek it out. This album seems to have his best known hits. Necrophilia song at the end is pretty creepy, but I suppose that is the point.
Was fine and well till we got to the necrophilia anthem that is the last song…
This is hard to like for me. The feigned badassery is off putting. The grandiosity. It’s all so cringey. There are bright moments of instrumentation. I specially the “me and Julio” riff at the end of that one song. This would get the lowest rating from me, but the band saves it a bit.
Insipid
Every song is like a shitty encore.
I did like the song Sweet Nothing with the James Bond style guitar licks. Otherwise, I don't care for this. Never got Alice Cooper's schtick. Not really into the macabre or horror storytelling. I Love the Dead is simply gross.
Didn’t do much for me.
closer to a 3 than a two could i write poetry to this? n
I was really enjoying some songs, only to realize that Spotify had already started playing a different album...
1.5 stars. Booo. Shock rock that's just boring musically. "No More Mr. Nice Guy" is the standout.
Not for me, unfortunately.
Great classic rock sound. Not sure it’s one I would revisit but if it was on I wouldn’t turn it off and would bop around to it. Felt like the beginning was stronger and it got a little monotonous by the end.
An ok album
Not my jam, but I appreciate the theatrical nature of it.
I like this genre and don't hate Alice Cooper. But this entire album is just bleh. I don't know what it is but none of it really stands out.
Ech
nope
One or 2 good songs punctuated by not very good songs.
Dated and not very good but not the worst thing on here.
Starts okay, but sometimes to whack
70s dark camp rock
Only like two songs that are good
Mal conheço tanto, só que não foi este disco que me empolgou a escutar mais músicas dele.
don't like these lyrics
Dull. Based on Wayne's World, I thought I'd like Alice Cooper more, but it just wasn't very interesting.
Well, I love the dead more than I love this album. Simply put, it was boring. Not sure it would have struck me this way 45 years ago as a young teen. But now? Blah.
I had mid expectations, but the band sounds pretty good. The vocals sound so tongue in cheek that it threw me. A dental song that seems to also have a little spy song spoof in it? The stereo mixing could be better odd choices. The sound all over this is very much from classic rock'n roll roots. No More Mr. Nice Guy stands out of course. I don't forsee myself giving the rest many more replays. This album made me think of the classic muppet show. It was sold as being for kids but It's sense of humor and guests were from a time 20 or 30 years earlier so adults could also consume it.
Probably should’ve stopped after schools out. This was just stupidly mediocre , sounds like every rock song ever which I’ve hated. Worst track: billion dollar baby seriously what the fuck. Fuck you alice Cooper you ruined your music for me 2.9/5
Decent early goth rock
Proof that a large portion of this list is albums included because of one noteworthy song. This album is on this list because of No More Mr. Nice Guy. “Raped and Freezin” certainly didn’t make the case for its inclusion.
Not a fan.
Known for No More Mr Nice Guy. Song about loving the dead was okay too.
Were parents afraid of this guy? The music sounds like it belongs in the background of a Disney movie about a bum dad renting an RV to spend a weekend with his family when everything goes wrong. I am not a fan of faux dental drill sounds in my music. "I got no friends because I read the paper" is so lame.
There are a couple good adolescent anthems on here. Alice is at times an interesting vocalist. Some of the instrumentation is pretty good. And there's some real crap on here, too. Funny, that's just how I remember it!
This was not my kind of music at all. Just didn’t really enjoy it. I liked the last few songs.
Semi listened
Never been much of an Alice Cooper fan and listening to this album all the way through didn't change that.
Rock, heavy metal, male, mid, solos, voice too prominent, rather soft, drums and bass play very small role, but a lot of references. Not enough to keep me entertained...
Airy mix. Which is cool for a rock album. Not my thing, but it’s not bad. Too bad he’s turned into a weirdo and bigot
Aside from No More Mr. Nice Guy, this album just doesn't do anything for me. It sounds like other stuff from the era, just worse. I'm also not a big fan of some of the content of the lyrics. Gives me the ick.
fun and easy to listen to! love no more mr nice guy.
In high school, this band was very popular with the stoners and freaks (I was decent friends with many of them) and the whole purpose of the band seemed very calculated to me to appeal to such a demographic. Theatrically shocking in concert. Some of the songs are ok, but this album generally leaves me cold. Alice later (or maybe even during their heyday) became a golf fanatic and supposedly drank over a case of beer a day. School’s Out (not on this album) is a great song, though.
Objectively not bad but I didn’t enjoy it at all
Shock rock isn’t for me. The music for those who “aren’t like other boys” and wants you to know it. Fun instrumentation and lots of influence from late 60s-early 70s rock
Some interesting instruments used, kinda atmospheric but probably wouldn't listen again
no thanks
A bit aged sounding but sounds like classic rock for me. Slow and the track is a bit muddled sounding. Interesting riffs that were probably more revolutionary at the time.
Die ouwe Alice trek ik een stuk beter dan het latere werk. Maar dat neemt niet weg dat ik niet alles even goed kon waarderen.
Boring for me
Really not my vibe for some reason cause it should be 2/5 It’s fine? Just kinda lost interest
Not for me in the slightest. Starts out okay, but not sure if it's a weird joke or if it's just trying to be mega edgelordy. Starts out well, but turns into a prototype, more tuneful Marilyn Manson. 2/5.
It's shocking for a guy my age, but this is my first Alice Cooper album. I'm surprised by how campy it is. I knew how theatrical he can be but I thought his music was darker and more ominous. Anyway, I can see how high school dudes in the early 70s would love Cooper for upsetting their parents and preachers, but 50 years later I don't hear anything enduring or meaningful here. The best stuff sounds like cast-offs from The Who. For what it's worth, I also decided to check out Welcome to My Nightmare and that was even more campy with orchestras and Vincent Price gleefully waxing about poisonous spiders! I guess it's fun to revisit that era for a bit and chuckle at what sounds like songs from "Gollum the Musical" but this album seemed kind of shallow to me.
I’ve never dug Alice Cooper.
Very middling experience. Plenty of yelling over standard rock tracks and nothing stood out. I knew Election, as most people probably do, but I wasn't really interested by much on offer here.
This sucks so much. 1.7
Really mid, and kinda boring. The second I saw the track called "Raped and Freezin" I knew this album wouldn't be for me.
#13. With a walking cringe factory like Alice Cooper that is seemingly unaware that we're laughing at him and not with him, you'd think this album would be worse. I want to give it one star. I want to hate it. But this album isn't interesting enough to elicit any emotion anywhere near hate. The only thing it generates in me is disinterest. It's just generic boring 70s radio rock. If you cut the volume way down and pretend you don't speak English, it's almost good as background noise. Almost. This album is just... lame. And not offensively lame, just boringly lame. The best this album could hope for is to be quietly forgotten 2/5 meh
Disappointed. Was expecting something rocky. this sounded like musical theatre.
This was not as cool as I thought it was going to be. Tried to be a goth Beatles of the 70s from the sound of it. Knew fewer songs than I expected, too.
Alice Cooper is weird music for weird people. Half of these songs follow the same formula: “Blah blah blah CATCHPHRASE! Something else CATCHPHRASE!” Repeat for 4 minutes. The two good songs, No More Mr. Nice Guy and Mary Ann are mostly good because of the instruments and not Cooper’s vocals. I wonder if these songs would be better if they were sung by someone else.
AC was always a bit medium on the scale. His pupils overtook him. This album is no different
This is gonna suck too 2 Bit of a joke
So, so boring
Not that great, he was a a stage showman, didn’t do much musically
Oikein mallikasta musiikkia.. Ajalleen.. ei täydellistä..
Okay rock. Didn’t recognize any of the songs. Wouldn’t necessarily listen again.
As is becoming a trend with the classic rock - not my bag. Nothing wrong with it, just not my bag. Not entirely boring and for fans of the genre, I can see why it's a stalwart. I did have fun with the campiness of it all, and Cooper's theatrical delivery. Two and a half. Fave track: No More Mr. Nice Guy
Pretty awful
Not for me. Mr. Nice Guy is a good enough song. I can't handle the macabre stuff.
When I hear Alice Cooper, I do not think “oh, I must listen to this album of his before I die.” This is good rock music and probably isn’t in the top 73 most essential albums of 1973. Don’t get me wrong, No More Mr. Nice Guy is one of the best FM radio rock songs, holds up well on repeat listens
Shock rock doesn't resonate much with me, sadly. I appreciate the instrumentation, but I find that music that is too screechy is not my favorite thing!
Eh, hair metal has never really been for me. It feels weirdly sanitized and crude at the same time, maybe that's just because times have changed though.
Again with Alice Cooper, who looks scary but sounds like the soundtrack to a cheesy kid's Halloween movie. It's just not that good! It's not remarkable in its terribleness either, just kinda lame. 2/5
whatever
I’m sure someone out there rocks out to it, it’s just not good for me. Like drama club rock.
2.5
Alice Cooper: lucky to have been paid for this rubbish.
Alice Cooper's story is so bizarre. Since the age of 6, Alice Cooper dreamt of working the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland. Though he forged his age on the application he did end up fulfilling his dream of ride operator at Disney's Haunted Mansion ride in 1968. Cooper took the job seriously. So seriously in fact that they let him go after only a month on the job. Evidently, he was too involved with participating IN the attraction, dressing up, appearing from behind the dinner table, marching around with his little top hat and cane while and making ghoulish noises with his voice over the pa. So, Disney let him go. Depression set in, but after a month he reinvented himself as a musician and applied the silliness he learned at Haunted Mansion to his musical act. And it's obvious, you can still hear the schmaltzy Micky Mouse fluff of Disneyland in his voice and presentation. Fortunately, the supporting music here is decent enough to earn it two stars.
Meh right
musical theatre.
Q. What does Scott eat for breakfast? A. Million Dollar Babies
First time listening. The singles were fine. Felt like a chore at times; songs like "Sick Things" drag for what seems like an eternity. Is this one of those "you had to be there" albums? It sounds dated and hokey too often. Not a fan.
I don't really know what to make of Alice Cooper. I'm far too young to have caught the good years (the 70s, at least according to Allmusic ratings) and well, he wasn't relevant at all to my growing up in the 80s. Nothing much to say, I've heard "Elected" a million times. Was that Paul McCartney? 2 / 5 stars.
Not a fan at all.
Not quite as awful as School’s Out but still pretty insufferable
The music is better than the vocals. And the music isn’t great.
Alice pooper
Baa kinda lame.... ja vet att albume int e menat helt allvarligt men dehä e ba en stor ingenting hamburgare som är okej i bakgrunden.
pretty basic, generic classic rock. nothing interesting
Didn't love this, had some interesting songs but I quite often felt bored tbh.
meh, didnt really notice it
Didn't really like this one
It was alright, I suppose, but it's so outdated and corny nowadays. I also don't get scared away by 'disturbing' lyrics either so it was kind of a flop for me. Some good guitar riffs though
When I was a kid, our local amusement park had a massive Alice Cooper's "Welcome to my Nightmare" themed haunted house as part of their Halloween attractions one year. My parents went and had a blast. The only specific that I remember them talking about was a scene where 'Alice Cooper' was beheaded by a guillotine. Fast forward to high school, when my friend let me Dazed and Confused, and I had my first real exposure to Alice Cooper, when I heard "No More Mr. Nice Guy" during the infamous hazing scene (fun fact: a girl I went to high school with said that her mom was part of the freshman class at Huntsville High School the year after the movie took place, and hazing had basically been banned). I wound up purchasing both of the soundtrack discs for Dazed, and I always enjoyed "No More Mr. Nice Guy" and "School's Out," but that was the extent of my exposure to Alice Cooper (I take that back, someone I went to church with said she used to babysit for him when their family lived in Arizona. Weird.) I was pretty excited to listen to this album, since I'd never listened to a full Alice Cooper album before. After listening to it though, I was pretty disappointed. Culturally, Alice Cooper were (that's the name of the band, so it's plural, right?) doing things that were pretty wild and novel. I know their live shows were supposed to be out of this world, with crazy theatrics, and I can't think of anyone else doing anything even remotely like this until White Zombie and Manson came on the scene. But musically, I just wasn't that impressed with what's going on here. Alice Cooper the man isn't a particularly talented vocalist in my opinion, and none of the instrumentation on this album was unique or memorable to me. Lyrically, there are a few songs here that I thought were opening some new doors ("No More Mr. Nice Guy," "Billion Dollar Babies," and "Generation Landslide"), but other than that, nothing here was that great. I can appreciate what this album and the band as a whole did for the music scene, but beyond that, this album didn't do much for me.
Old guy rock
Shock rock, not a genre that has legs.
Meh
The album art is pretty great here, but I didn't walk away with anything better than No More Mr. Nice Guy, which is still a good song, but the rest of this evaporated.
Decent chunka-chunka, but not enough to really grab me.
Este disco no me llamo la atención y viendo desde el aspecto técnico no me pareció tan bueno
Billion-dollar boredom.
very short but concise. wasn't a huge fan tho.
Not terrible but not as shocking or operatic as it clearly aimed to be. Triple points off for inspiring the likes of Reznor, Manson, etc. Today sounds like generic, replacement-level '70s arena rock, and pretty meh besides, which must seem the ultimate in faint condemnation to the involved perpetrators here. Maybe the guillotines and electric chairs and other stage theatrics were necessary to achieve full impact but then that completely undercuts the case for the lasting importance of the music. One doesn't think that nobody caring anymore can be put down to everyone's just being jaded nowadays. The editors' comparisons to Waters and Townsend are as perhaps the most ludicrous aspect of this listening experience, and certainly as shocking (and stupid) as Cooper having himself drawn and quartered onstage.
Shock rock? This is just glam rock with edgy lyrics.
Like it a little, but no hits I know.
Meh….
notes - rock album dealing with some controversial themes - “shock rock” - discussing the realities of sudden fame - self referrential - super elaborate and theatrical tour - solid performances all around - technically well done - none of the songs really grabbed me fav - mary ann - nice little tune and very different from the rest of the album least fav - elected - the vocals are reeeally somethin 2.5/5
Mediocre
I thought this was pretty flat, and I Love the Dead was gratuitous - try hard.
This is the second Alice Cooper album I've been disappointed in. I had an image of him in my mind as this larger-than-life "shock rocker" growing up, but never really listened to much of his music (outside of what they played on the classic rock stations). In reality, his music seems kinda hollow and gimmicky. This one was better than the last one though. So there's that.
11th November 2022 Listened in the day on Friday, chilled evening before races on Saturday. Alice Cooper treads a fine line between goth horror and camp exuberance. It’s hard to reconcile at times but not a bad album. 2.5 if I could.
So now it's the Bowie-influnced stuff, I guess. Wow, Elected completely steals the riff of Dolly Dagger. This is fine, mostly. But not interesting or compelling. Mr nice guy is a solid single. Generation landslide might be best track. Ode to Jeffrey Dahmer to close is a thing.
It’s not bad, but not good, either. Everything here was done better by The Who. This is music for boomers in convertibles who want to feel tough.
I wanted to like this more.
No care alice cooper
Kind of corny at times but a very fun listen
Has a certain shock value and Alice Cooper has a certain charisma for sure. But by God the album is unmemorable
starts off sounding like a cast recording of a rock-theme Broadway musical
This wasn't what I expected. Based on "School's Out" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy", the only Cooper songs I know, I expected something like a proto-punk record. But this is almost straight glam rock - it sounds more like Sweet than Stooges. Cooper has the temperament and confidence for that style, but not the voice - simply put, his voice is extremely limited. He can't just take over a song the way Bowie or Freddie Mercury can (but oh boy does he have the willingness to try). As mid-tier American 70s hard rock goes, I'm not even sure this rates as especially noteworthy. The album generator gave me "Rocks" by Aerosmith recently - that's a pretty good comp I think, and "Rocks" is way better. Tyler's a dramatically better singer, Perry's a better and more creative guitar player than Cooper's guy, Aerosmith gets better sound quality and gets more out of their two-guitar style, they're more fun, and more inventive as composers. This isn't an awful album, it's just not one that I think really belongs in the annals of history. On a list of 1,001 maybe it makes the cut, but there's just a great number of CDs that do the same thing better.
I’ve heard a few Alice Cooper songs, but admittedly not many. A few years ago when watching Riverdale I found it quite amusing that Betty’s mum is called Alice Cooper, thinking she was named after the singer. Oh, how silly I felt when it turned out it was (quite obviously) the other way round. Songs I already knew: Billion Dollar Babies, No More Mr. Nice Guy Favourites after listening: No More Mr. Nice Guy I’ve listened to many albums recently from the 70s, and been very impressed by how modern they sound. Unfortunately, this sounded very much like old, dated rock. The title track, much like the majority of this album, is frankly rather boring. I heard Billion Dollar Babies for the first time when playing Guitar Hero, and only really played it to unlock other songs - it was a chore to listen to even when gamified. I will say that No More Mr. Nice Guy was enjoyable, but it is really the only standout track from a fairly dull album.
Meh, felt generic.
- love the piano solo in Mary Ann - i stopped on like the 3rd song because this album is kinda evil sounding 🥲 im not into hard rock at all
Not bad but not for me
Don’t love it
Better than its contemporaries but something I have no interest in listening to more than once.
Hello hooray-doesn’t appeal to me personally, theatre core? Raped and freezin’- quite disturbing lyrics but I like the instrumental Elected- pretty groovy. Everyone at everytime feels the same way about politicians I guess👍 Billion dollar baby- odd in a good way, especially the chorus. Guitar outro pretty cool as well 👍 Unfinished sweet- another weird song, not unpleasant but not personally my thing. No more mr nice guy- nice catchy tune 👍 Generation landslide- different vibe with harmonica 😮 lyrics a bit try hard for me Sick things- quite dull, not a fan Mary Ann- interesting segue, music hall vibe, incredibly derivative, honey pie did it better tbh I love the dead- dramatic shift into song about necrophilia. This is too edgelord for me lol. I do like the cut to saying nothing though, but the whole song doesn’t do too much for me. This album didn’t really resonate. Maybe I don’t like rock? Idk v edgy for no good reason 2/5
It was okay. Some of the “singles” were good, but I don’t think I’d go back to it
Meh
Album didn't entertain me. Steady rock album, but a bit boring for me. At the beginning of the live section I had enough of it. So still listened to the whole album, by accident.
I'm underwhelmed. There are some real gems (Billion Dollar Babies, Mary Ann, No More Mister Nice Guy) but over all, this isn't the album for me.
Admittedly not an Alice Cooper fan, let's see how this goes. Really liked the first track, off to a good start. Unfinished Sweet has a dentist drill as background. Clearly fucking with us. Favorite track: Generation Landslide.
Rolling Stones + The Who. Feels derivative.
Didn’t grab me, didn’t repulse me.
not the worst but i have no idea why this is considered a classic
Even the 15 year old me didn't like this. Very mundane goth/rock that is reminiscent of boring hair bands like Kiss, Aerosmith etc. I always thought he was too gimmicky with the ambiguous female name, hair, goofy make-up and costumes. I can see how he influenced the other goof, Marilyn Manson. I'm definitely not his target audience.
E kje så alice cooper fanboy diverre
Loud and weird and unapologetic... but maybe it should apologize. Not terrible, decent rock, but nothing that really stood out. Sometimes the weirdness became too much to deal with and I was just like, 'No thanks.' Definitely not better than School's Out, and that was only a solid 3. I think Alice Cooper just isn't for me. It ends on a solidly terrible note. Thanks, edgelord.
Never been the biggest Alice Cooper fan
Genuinely bad
Not great
Way to creepy for me.
Would be one star if it wasn't for 'Elected'
Honestly not that good as an album. There's some good songs here, but there's far more filler than big hits. "No More Mr. Nice Guy" is a banger, but then you have songs like "Raped and Freezin'" and "Sick Things" which I instantly forgot once the album ended. Alice Cooper goes for that creepy macabre schtick, so I was expecting this to be a lot heavier than it is. It's pretty mild actually. Almost glam rock, but not quite. I appreciated when they dipped one singular toe into a more proggy sound during "Unfinished Sweet".
I really find Alice Cooper's music cringey and bland. It's not awful, and maybe it just hasn't aged well, but another low 2 for me.
Like School's Out, it's got this campy dark vibe that I want to like but the music is just really uninteresting
On dirait Rocky horror Picture show.
Mon premier Alice Cooper.
not bad just nothing stands out
This is fine. A lot of pretty standard and relatively catchy glam rock that's lost its edge due to the passage of time.
Not my thing. The music is mediocre though it is well arranged and performed. I’m not a fan of shock rock because it’s transgressive simply for the effect. There’s not really anything of substance behind it and it’s not really saying anything profound. It’s gimmicky
One thing I really liked about this record was the lead guitar tone. Perfectly dialed in. That being said, I think the whole Alice Cooper "spooky" angle is more remniscent of Party City than rock and roll.
meh... he's not really my genre/milieu...
School's out it´s a much better album, although this one's not all bad. On the contrary, it has some interesting songs, but lacks density for me.
Glam rock sort of feels like the musical equivalent of McDonalds-esque fast food. It's mass-produced, impersonal, quick to go in, quick to get out and what's left are some greasy stains and the feeling of having indulged something that really wasn't worth it. Just like those soggy fries this felt stale and unsatisfying. Just like those tasteless burger buns and boring standard condiments, this cardboard cutout rock with cringey "shocking" lyrics and imagery might have sufficed or even impressed my little kid self. But as an adult, I really want to ditch this for some proper food with any sort of sustenance.
Ok
This album is not boring, it does have moments of experimental stuff, the sort of thing that makes sense for the decade. On personal notes, Alice Cooper's persona never matched his music although lyrics and song titles would disagree at times. There was an expectation of shock value but that could be due to the fact this review is from 2021, where the social tolerance is markedly different from 1973.
Not for me
Not my jam, yet another not-quite-different-enough contribution to late 60s/early 70s rock
The production is interesting, and shows why Pink Floyd hired Bob Ezrin to produce The Wall. But the songs are lame.
I never really got the appeal of Alice Cooper. Just doesn't make sense to me.
Second Alice Cooper album… I still don’t really get it. Maybe with the live theatrics, I might, but on record I don’t get much from it.
My primary introduction to Alice Cooper was his appearance on the Muppet Show. He was creepy, but perhaps not creepy in the way he hoped to be creepy. I'm not sure how to deal with the character that Cooper is trying to portray. I have heard a few tracks from Cooper, including "No More Mr. Nice Guy" from this album. I haven't found anything I'd listen to again. "I Love the Dead" is completely committed to Cooper's shtick. I'm not sure how "Mary Ann" was ever recorded. All of the tracks, alone or combined, arrive at the same result for me - "no thanks".
Despite a couple of standout tracks it’s a fairly forgettable affair overall. I feel Like this just hasn’t aged very and no longer packs the punch it once might have done. Can’t see myself going back.
Trying hard to be edgy and maybe was back in the day but horribly dated and a bit embarrassing today. Still some good tracks though.
only one good song. his lyrics are kinda trash and he goes along with the beat like "nah nah nah nah naaaah" too much. just let me hear the beat yo wtf.
Not a huge fan of cooper but I understand the show was one to see. Not a bad album but not one I'd add to my rotation.
