I like the beginning much better than the end of the album.
I personally do not like U2 so a bad pick for me
I hate bono so much. But credit where credit is due. The singles are good. But everything else is so blah. But it's definitely not a 2. Even though I want to give it a 2.
One of my favorite U2 albums. It was the last album (to me) that they were great and Bono had not succumbed to his own myth and ego.

The sound of a once great rock band chasing the trend rather than making it. There are glimpses here and some undeniably catchy tunes but they just don’t have the sonic depth or resonance of U2’s earlier work. I’m not as willing to bash Bono as other critics appear to be but on this one it’s a miss.

While Radiohead was putting out Kid A and Amnesiac, U2 was putting out this album. I guess it just goes to show you that some music is really good, and some music is fucking stupid. Did we learn anything with this comparison? No, but we didn't learn anything by listening to this album either, so in that sense, it's appropriate. It's really hard not to see this album as vapid. I understand that U2 has to do something with it's albums if it wants to keep making them. But this feels like a weird statement from a band that was styling themselves as politically important during this period, and yet they seem to have nothing to say about the world. The fact that this album was listed on so many Top XXX albums of all time lists is truly baffling to me 3/5

I was crying. It was so bittersweet. I remembered how much I listened to this album back when it came out.

I'm an occasional listener of U2 and find 'The Joshua Tree' is one of the best rock albums out there. This one here? Well, it's alright. They wrote a lot of better stuff. The opening track sets the course for a straightforward, somewhat mellow but rather highlight-less album by this band which can do a lot better.
Takes me back to the terrible days of ITV football highlight and no MOTD. Couple of catchy songs, I dont particularly dislike U2 like a lot of people seem to but I can never get excited about them

This felt like a series of movie soundtrack songs (probably because they have been used as such). The one thing I know about Bono is that he was called Bone-o in the flash game celebrity pedigree.
Love this album but it gets 3 stars because I don't think it's one of the 1001 best ever. U2 has more interesting albums.
These guys fell so hard from their peak. This album was just bland and boring. A couple semi-decent tracks bumps it to a 2, but if this were a no-name band, this nobody would have heard of it.
Every time I listen to U2, I feel surprised that I didn't hate it.

I'd probably rate this objectively as a 4 at best, but it brings a lot of nostalgia and I have strong emotional connections to some of these songs, particularly the opening track
You should know, upfront, that this is one of the first albums I ever bought. I certainly try not to let my nostalgia colour my perception but I'm not perfect. This was a good record, period. U2 drop much of the studio layering that they'd become buried in by Pop, revealing precisely what remained of their songwriting by the 2000 release of All That You Can't Leave Behind. The singles get a lot of attention (Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation) and while they're good efforts (Beautiful Day, in particular, is a rare sunny anthem from a band known for their songs about deathbed reconciliations and The Troubles), the second half of the album contains some hidden gems. Wild Honey recalls the acoustic bops of the Rolling Stones while In A Little While offers a soulful effort that shows each member playing with little effect support - Clayton and Mullen keeping a slow shuffle groove, Bono showing his genuine capacity for vocal dynamics and the Edge providing a deeply organic electric guitar part that relies on nothing more than artful phrasing, varied pick attack and some spot-on overdrive to achieve the song's atmosphere. U2 are a band known for their bombast and their polished, sweeping rock soundscapes but they're genuinely good writers and players. They can't resist their bombastic nature here, but the stripped down record proves perfectly that it comes from them genuinely and not just from their racks and racks of studio electronics. ATYCLB closes on some slicker numbers but the varied, infectious, affecting nature of the work remains. Unlike some of their more constructed efforts, any band could pick up this whole album and play it through with whatever gear they already have (excepting a deceptive octave effect on Elevation) and it would sound great - that's a mark of well-crafted songs. This is accessible to both the listener and to a musician following along -- you don't need three hours puzzling over an arcane chain of delay pedals to replicate the guitar sound or an ocean of reverb to get Bono's vocals. But you've gotta have some range and a delicate touch to get it right. Is it melodramatic? Yeah, that's them through and through. But is it good? Unequivocally, yes.

I spent a very enjoyable hour cooking with a nice bottle of wine and this album for company last night. It may just be that I’m in a fairly difficult place in my life currently, but the uplifting songs did make me feel a bit better about life. Musically this is all very similar to the second half of The Judas Tree, which isn’t a bad thing. It doesn’t soar as high as the opening three tracks of that album, but then again what does? The only dud was Peace on Earth, and that isn’t really the album’s fault. Bono has managed to keep his faith throughout his life, which is admirable. I haven’t, so there’s a clear conflict of thought there. But, I’ve never minded U2’s other religious songs throughout their career. I liked Grace on this album. Peace on Earth is the song that comes closest to sounding like full blown Christian Rock though, which is why I think I had a problem with it, even if the lyrics are actually quite depressing. What can I say? I enjoyed it
After a decade of experimentation, U2 returns to a more anthemic base. Unfortunately, while this album has glimpses of past greatness, it all feels a bit too commercial. The front half of the album is stacked with hits but the back half drags on severely. Lyrically, this album is fairly positive; it's clear that as U2 have aged and started families, that much of their edge (no pun intended) has gone away. That's not a bad thing, that's just what happens.
Over the years, I have tried to find more appreciation for U2, but I just can’t get into them. I don’t hate them (with the exception of the song “Elevation”). It’s clear they’ve gotten where they are for a reason. And this album has some terrific songwriting. It’s just not for me.

One of the best albums of all time
This was exactly the point at which U2 and Coldplay became indistinguishable. Feel-good stadium rock that doesn't challenge and completely falls apart upon close examination. Although, having now listened to a bunch of U2, I concede that there is always one really good track among the dross on every album. In this case, it's "Elevation." Complete turd otherwise.
I have rose-coloured glasses for this album because my parents used to play it at home but gee it's pretentious in places. The bonus song with lyrics by Salman Rushdie slayed me

The first four songs are hits. The rest of the songs are lackluster. New York is probably one of the worst songs about New York I’ve ever heard. U2 has always been one of those bands that think they are more important than they really are. This album and all its Grammys permanently stoked that ego, to the point where they eventually had the balls to push a shitty album no one wanted out to millions of people’s devices. Wankers.
Hmm so I guess I like U2 now! And that's why I love 1001 albums so much! I've tried getting into them before because people said they're similar to Coldplay, but Best of U2 didn't cut it. Achtung Baby came up a couple of months ago on 1001 albums as well, and although I gave it 4 stars it wasn't memorable and I haven't listened to any of the tracks again since. I liked a lot of tracks on ARYCLB, and I can now see why people compare them to Coldplay. Some of the riffs were indeed reminiscent. The bass line in New York particularly stuck out. The Ground Beneath Her Feet might just be my favourite track on the album.
I’ve never been a big fan of U2, and since listening to the Boomtown Rats I can’t help but to compare the two and see the former as a worse yet more successful version of the latter. I still vividly remember that bizarre apology video after Apple but a U2 album on everybody’s phones and the mass response was, “Get this crap off.” Songs I already knew: Beautiful Day, Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of, Elevation Favourites: Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of I can honestly say that there was only one song on this album that I enjoyed. Some were fine but very easily ignorable, whereas others were just dull. It wasn’t a terrible album, but just felt very uninspired and safe. Then again, “uninspired and safe” feels like it would be a fair description of the band itself, so maybe that’s on brand. Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of was genuinely really good. Beyond that, it was a bit naff.

Ever notice how U2 basically sings the title of their track over and over again and makes billions doing it? Distinct sound, great vibes, and it's Bono.

I found this album a little disappointing.
U2 has a lot to live up to in my book and they don’t always quite rise to my expectations. I think Beautiful Day and Elevation are among their best songs and a few other tracks stand out for not sounding like their typical fare. But I don’t love every track the way I hope to when I see the name U2 attached.
Beautiful Day is among my favorite U2 songs. I’d completely forgotten about Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of until I heard it again - a welcome reunion. I love that song too. But the other singles - Elevation and Walk On - don’t ring any bells. Surprising because they are terrific songs as well! This is a very positive-feeling, uplifting U2 album that I almost missed entirely. Glad it is here!
U2 deliver every time. Great album
Strong start, Beautiful Day is a good song, the next few are pretty good, but sure fades by the end. The last few songs are just trash. I like U2 pretty well, I never got all the hate, but even so, not sure why this particular album is on this list.

Je mets U2 dans la même catégorie que Coldplay et compagnie en mode "usines à tubes", "concerts dans des stades", etc. Je laissais le bénéfice du doute à cet album mais non, je crois que tout ce qui est postérieur à Sunday Bloody Sunday j'y arriverai pas. Déjà énervé au bout des 30 premières secondes d'écoute.
Why is this album on this list? Joshua Tree is so much better, but if Joshua Tree is also on this list, that means there are two U2 albums which is far too many. I didn't check this but I have a sneaking suspicion that the Br*tish made this list
Awful
I was prepared to give this one 5 stars off the bat. I remember this album coming out and how huge it was. With a catalogue as great as theirs was before this one was, they still would not make it out of a stadium alive without playing Beautiful Day. I can concede most of these tracks are reworking of their classics and I was still prepared to give it a 5. But the back half of this falls off so incredibly hard. Needs 1 or 2 great songs to end it off.
Terrible lyrics throughout (A mole, digging in a hole/Digging up my soul/Now going down, excavation) but I enjoyed this more than I expected tbh, the singles are bangers for sure - opening 1/2/3 is undeniable despite their overplayed nature. Production is a bit weird, certainly very over-produced and clean, but there's an element of vulnerability to the album that I wasn't really anticipating.

I used to despise U2, but I’ve warmed up to them a little bit as the years go by. They’re all talented performers and Bono has pipes, and I do admire their ambition. But that’s mostly true for their material up to the early 90s at most, almost everything since does next to nothing for me. Like this album, which is the kind of bland, tempoless rock that explains why the music went out of style in the new millennium. There isn’t even a banger like “Vertigo” to shake things up. No thank you. D
Was this the album that was forced onto peoples' iPhones? I didn't listen to it back then and I didn't find anything overwhelmingly important about it now. It's a fine album that sounds like it was crafted with a "spare no expense" mindset. What I can't shake though is how formulaic it feels.
I didn't leave this behind
So I tried to listen to this not assuming U2 sucks. I've always known they felt like some weird easy listening niche that didn't click with me but I wanted to give this a real chance. I listened to it while driving and when Elevation came on I got cut off by some out of shape dude in his 50s in a yellow Corvette with a custom license plate and it felt strangely fitting. It feels like music that is meant to be technical and deep and sung by a strong singer but it all just keeps adding to like a C-. I'm not sure if it's just a case of they were already a late game version of their band when I heard them or them sounding so much like grocery store rock, but I couldn't help but see that yellow Corvette and think of the Apple exec loading a U2 album on everyone's device; I left this album knowing that whoever loves this is so convinced that U2 is cool that it doesn't need explanation.
I don't know much about U2. So I was open to listen to this and try and block out any preconceived notions. First thing, I've heard many generic bands that sound like this in generic bars. I don't think Bono is a good or interesting singer. I'm willing to hear more. Maybe they are better live, but this album makes me sad for the interesting artists that a band like this has taken money from just by being pushed by a record label. But I don't know much about U2 so maybe I'll change my mind.

Bono trying so hard to be revelant and deep in the most cringe and awful way. All of it at the top of boring sounds that would be nothing without reverb and delay. The 1001 should have let this one behind.
Another U2 album that starts off like a greatest hits cd. A lot of their angst is gone and the songs are much softer and not as heavy. Decent but not their best.
Not U2's best work, sure the first few tracks were singles but at this point Bono's voice is shot. 2nd half of the album is filler. Mid.
This U2 record is very bland but does not offend (unlike any later U2 album). The Brian Eno sound is there, but in essence they simply seem to have forgotten to write any good tunes, apart from Wild Honey and New York: the first one sounds a bit like a b-side, but is my favourite song (4 star); the second one is a proper rock song (4 star). I can appreciate Beautiful Day and Elevation (both 3 star) and a few other songs. Overall score in 2000 = overall score in 2023 = 5/10.

Surprising myself, I found this kind of soothing. They know what they’re doing and exactly how to do it. If I had to hire a band for world domination, a band that could get the job done, U2 would be a top candidate.
Weird choice for this list. They produced so many great albums in thr 80s and early 90s, but by this point they were creatively over, and this is deathly. After Coldplay yesterday, our Spotify algorithm may be permanently trashed.

Outside 2 or 3 hits, rest is just a little dreary and dull.
For me this album is bittersweet. It’s a banger and has some of my favorite U2 tunes, but it also marks the beginning of the end. After this, U2 became the characters they portrayed in the zootv tour. Comical, outsized, yelling into an empty room relics. It’s a great album and would’ve been a fine outro for one of rock’s greatest bands, but alas, they chose to try and take it with them.
I've been an android user (the audacity, I know) forever, so I'm not harboring the same vitriol as others over the iTunes incident with "Songs of Innocence". I'm also not angry about their attempted return to early 90's U2 with this release. The soundscape at the time needed it. That being said, this record is fine but I don't think it's critical U2 listening, unless you can specify that the back half should be discarded preemptively and almost entirely. The singles are good, particularly "Beautiful Day", but from "In a little while" on, it's mostly forgettable and boring, befitting a mediocre rom-com soundtrack. What do I know though, I really liked, "Pop".

This was the last good U2 album. I've been a fan of the band for over 30 years, and this bookends their career for me. It's solid pop rock, and some of these songs still sound fresh today. Nice listen.

Started off really strong I thought, but just not very interesting after that. Just below 3 stars for me and the first 4 or so songs are doing most of the heavy lifting there.
This album is very easy to listen to, but feels very long despite its length. Some really good songs on here, but overall it feels like it can easily fall into the background
The U2 sound is cool, the Edge’s playing style is unique and very big. Not as good as their other albums, but cool use of effects and electronics with a rock base.
Well, got my wish for some U2 songs that I haven't heard a bunch of times, but idk if the proclivities of the y2k era did them a whole lot of favors lol. Maybe this is stupid of me, but I think I need bono to be more unrestrained, like the stuff I tend to like from them it sounds like he's hollering at large birds from atop a mountain, and for this one he's using his inside voice

I've never liked the major singles that came of this album, which I now have noticed are all front-loaded on here. "Beautiful Day" and "Elevation" are supposed to be the bangers, but they only annoyed me on release. It sounded like an old rock band phoning it in. "Stuck In A Moment" never did anything to me, not even the hopeful lyrics. The only decent single that came of this album was "Walk On." "Kite," "In A Little While" and "Wild Honey" are all very decent but also incredibly safe songs. A little trumpet here and a couple of strings there in the background to fill the sound out. After that, I think this album is like chewing gum where the nice taste disappears too quickly.

Pretty nice
I was a big fan of this album. I've always known about U2, but I've never really given them a true listen. This album as fantastic, with multiple songs/tunes that I recognized. I also love learning about bands that are still so modern that have been making music for close to 50 years. History like that is incredible. I remember when they released one of their albums for free for everyone on iTunes. That was a great marketing scheme. Big fan, and I'm glad this popped up on my generation. 4 stars!
Coupla good singles but fuck Bono.
Beautiful Day is one of those tracks that is only good to listen to now if I'm a bit drunk and/or really excited, it's been so overplayed over the years that I'm immune to it except in times of weakness. Stuck In A Moment is my favourite song off this album, then you have Elevation that is U2 attempting to make their own Song 2 (and is inferior in every way), and really not a lot else of note. 2/5, a real nothingburger.
The good songs are very good, rest of it didn't do much for me
Loved Boy, War, and October, but U2 were dead to me after The Unforgettable Fire. There's been the occasional track that I liked, but not on this album.
Pre-listening thoughts: I know some U2 songs, I think they started as a Christian rock band? But that sound is certainly prevalent in their music. Kind of a turn off for me. They're certainly not bad tho - album of the day could have been MUCH worse. Post/during listening thoughts: I have definitely heard Beautiful Day but I don't think I've heard any other songs on this album. Beautiful Day is a good opener - a large track that sets a positive tone for the album, and Bono sounds good on this song. Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of is a really great track - love the message but also the melody is really catchy. Elevation has a really nice guitar line in the back of the chorus, and the shift to electric guitar really makes the song pop. Really love Walk On also. The upside of starting as a Christian rock band is that their songs are really positive and uplifting - puts energy back into the listener instead of sucking it out. Some of the more mellow tracks blend together on this album (Kite, Peace on Earth) - but it's also my first listen so idk maybe it's just that. In A Little While has a really cool beat behind it. Also Bono has a falsetto that's actually really nice to listen to - unlike mf axl rose SORRY I HATE his voice. New York is kinda boring imo. I was typing "for this close to the end of the album it needs a little more umph" and literally as I was typing umph the guitars and drums KICKED in. Sorry New York my apologies. Grace was a little boring but sweet. Overall, better than I was expecting! Nice job U2 - will probably revisit a lot of this. 7/10. Favorite Tracks: Stuck In a Moment, Walk On, Wild Honey
U2 return to basics with a simple pop rock record. Production is top notch, and there are some gorgeous synths (and actual strings in "Kite") to give it an uplifting mood, which I'm sure really resonated with people a year later with the fear of terrorism. The first half is fairly decent but lacks innovation and is fairly forgettable, chill but dull. "Beautiful Day" is cemented in my head just for being over-played, but it does have its hooks and nice synths. For being ok, the first side gets 3 stars. The second half on the other hand is just awful. They sound like B-sides, throwaway sellout material. All pop fluff that fits in just cause they all evoke they same mood and style. Brings down my score by another star.
A welcome return to their sound from the mid-1980s, but a largely forgettable album. For me the highlight is "New York", but I also liked "Grace".

This was certainly a return to form, after the serious wilderness of Zooropa and Pop and it's certainly well made (to risk understatement) and an adult sort of record (an early Dad rock record to be sure), in seeming considered. There are a few touches of pure class – starting with "Beautiful Day," a very strong opener, and "Kite," heartfelt and powerful, and "Wild Honey," which is swings easily and engagingly. But one can't help but hear some calculation and some sense of compromise in the clear bid for acclaim (both critical [see "Peace on Earth," typically Bononical overbearing earnestness and a pretty dumb song] and commercial [especially "Elevation," one assumes). "When I Look" and "New York" and "Grace" make for a strong ending, too, largely by being controlled, and not trying to do too much. For overall impact and engagement, this can't touch one's affection for (or personal connection to) the early records (thru War) and deep regard for (or personal connection to) the middle records (namely Unforgettable Fire, which is more deserving of this spot, and The Joshua Tree and certainly excluding Rattle and Hum) but this was likely the best one could expect from this band in early aughts, and it certainly made sense in the context of one's mid-30s (and pre-Dad) life in NYC, perhaps for seeming considered and calculated and compromised, as one inevitably gets in those years. It's perhaps just slightly too Coldplay-y. For all its heart being in the right place and it staying just this side of cynical and that side of cloying sentimentality, it's just not as unforgettable as their best work, including The Unforgettable Fire.
I liked some songs, it was basically OK
Meh. Beautiful Day is a great start to an album, but this is hardly one of their best. It’s fine, but nothing compared to Rattle and Hum or even Boy.
Starts off really strong and then sputters out a bit. The themes are about life, existentialism and self-consciousness. Its a bit too clean for my tastes, but its still memorable and tuneful.
When they get it right, U2 are one of the few bands that can do epic stadium rock correctly. Beautiful Day is a perfect example and a great opener. Stuck in a moment is a pleasant enough ballad type. After that it gets really, really bad. The songs are bland and inoffensive, but Bono's lyrics are truly awful. They've done so many better albums than this that to have this appear on a top 1000 list is genuinely insulting.

Best Song: Beautiful Day. Even though by now this song has been co-opted by a million commercials and sitcoms, it still does go pretty hard on its own. Worst Song: Peace on Earth. Something about that kind of preachy, "can't we all just love one another" vibe from Bono always felt somehow disingenuous. And even if it is earnest, this song is just cheesy. Overall: After a strong start, it's just soft rock and Bono wailing. That isn't to say it's bad, it's just so very milquetoast that there isn't really much more to say about it.
U2 is U2 but this is a good enough listen
U2 sucks. Honestly is every U2 album on this list? How? They are truly awful. And this album is from AFTER they were relevant. So it's not even like it's one of the albums considered good!

So here's the thing. I hate U2. I always thought their music is so bland like a sheet of paper without writing. But to be fair I've never listened to any of their albums as a whole. That was the first time. I constantly keep in mind that this is their tenth album and I'm guessing the style changed a lot since debut but I'm not a fan and I can't tell if this is true. And what's the best part and really suprising (especially after reading reviews here) I don't despise this. Really think that couple first songs are great, some of them are straight garbage that sounds like an elevator music from Mass Effect but in the end that was an enjoyable listen. 3/5 and I'm really curious how The Joshua Tree will sounds when time will come to finally listen to it.
Probably one of the last two good U2 albums, just not one of their great ones. It starts strong but just kinda is just there after the first two songs.
1/5. Just a super boring album. Not interesting at all. No song stands on its own and surprising the hit single from the album has anywhere near that many listens. It’s awfully mediocre at best.
Is this a good album? No. Are there a couple good songs on here? I guess? Are the lyrics REALLY bad? 1000% The only reason this album feels like it belongs on the list is for Beautiful Day, maybe Stuck in a Moment. But so much of the song writing is shallow, uninspired, and at times just plain awful that it just brings down the entire album. It's way too safe and lacks anything inspiring. I want music with soul, not this dribble.

This was the first album I really got into U2 on. Seattle, 2000-2001. I had this thing on constantly at the Bauhaus coffee shop. This is U2 at peak preachy, but still catchy.

Not sure why, but Stuck in a moment…. has always been one of my favourite songs. However, the rest of the album didn’t really do much for me. Five stars for the one song. 2 for the rest of the album.

Accodring to Bono, with this release, they didn't write an album, they wrote 12 singles. - Well, where are they?!? This is just middle-of-the-road adult contemporary music, and not even very good one at that. I didn't hear a any song standing out or keeping my interest, and I can't even remember a single one. This is lightyears away from Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum and Achtung, Baby, by far their best albums. 2/5

Beautiful Day is natuurlijk een lekker nummertje. Over de rest van het album is weinig te melden. De kenmerkende U2-klank wordt snel eentonig. 2 sterren voor het geheel en dat plus ik op met wat punten voor Beautiful Day.
Ik ben op zich wel een fan van het oude werk van U2. Daarna kwam er een periode met veel geexperimenteer, en van experimenten weten we dat ze soms kunnen lukken, maar ook des te vaker mislukken. Dit album gaat eigenlijk weer meer terug naar een wat poppy sound, maar de echte urgentie of liefde voor muziek waren ze wat mij betreft al een beetje verloren. Getuige ook de massa aan singles die van de latere albums afkomt, het is met name de kassa laten rinkelen. De hitjes liggen op zich goed in het gehoor, maar als we de hitjes hebben gehad, wordt de plaat opgevuld met wat niemendalletjes en een enkel experimentje. Het doet me allemaal weinig. "All That You Can't Leave Behind" is the tenth studio album by Irish rock band U2. The band wanted to record music more akin to their earlier work after their more experimental 1990's work and the disappointment of their previous album "Pop." I kind of think their more experimental albums are their best...but. The band brought back producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois who had collaborated on three of their previous albums. The album received mostly positive reviews. It was a commercial succes selling over 12 million copies. It also won them seven Grammy's. The Edge used a guitar tone in "Beautiful Day" he hadn't used since "War." Electrification of chords also. Larry Mullin's drum and Adam Clayton's bass. A nice backing vocal chorus by The Edge. Bono doing Bono. About losing everything but still finding joy in what one has. The band adds gospel-like chords in "Stuck in a Moment and Can't Get Out." Piano. Synths. The lyrics were inspired by a fictional conversation between Bono and Inxs' Michael Hutchence about suicide. The Edge gets a fuzzy guitar going on "Elevation," the most rockin' song on the album. Hypnotic beat. I have no idea what Bono is singing about. "Walk On" has a great guitar chord progression, the best on the album probably. Nice harmonies at the end. It's a song that's banned in Burma since it is about Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi who was placed under arrest for his pro-democratic activities. "Kite" has a loop of strings and a slide guitar. It's Bono most emotional vocal delivery on the album. Dual meaning perhaps, being about Bono's daughters flying kites and, also, his father who was dying of cancer at the time. A quicker drum beat and synths open "New York." The bass and guitar come in slowly with Bono whispering/talking. The song then takes off with the guitar and Bono. It goes back slow. Again, I'm a sucker for the soft-loud-soft. The only alternatve-sounding song on the album and my favorite. It would have been interesting to see what this album might have been with more songs like this. It was a picturesque description of New York and a tribute to Lou Reed and Frank Sinatra. It's been awhile since I listened to this and it is a nice sounding pop album. It has to be their best of this century; I know a lot may think that's not saying much. I have to admit I didn't dig too deep into their catalogue after "Zooropa." It is front loaded with the second half being just OK withe exception of "New York." Anway, the first half is solid if not stretching any musical boundaries and the album is worth a listen again if you weren't burnt out when this came out.

My favourite album to listen to so far. Catchy, ryhtmic drums and good vocals from Bono. Surprised at how many I knew but starting with Beautiful Day is a great start to an album. Upbeat, easy listen. Will definitely listen again

Meh of the highest possible order
Man, there are few acts of music that I understand the appeal of less than U2. As far as U2 goes, Beautiful Day is actually a quite alright pop-song. I like the reverberating effect at the outset and otherwise layering on display -- in a way this song feels influenced by Radiohead. Bono's vocals are on point here and don't feel too douchey. This is the kind of song that should be listened to with bright lights shining. Production here feels surprisingly crappy. Something about the drums feels tinny, and the guitar feels over-compressed or something. Stuck In A Moment moves into ballad territory. Feels like stock music for a sad rom-com montage (images of sitting on park benches alone in the rain come to mind). Peace on Earth, while somewhat cheesy is an okay enough song. Blissful vibe with guitars dripping in reverb and the drum/vocals floating over everything else. Similar feelings about When I Look At The World. This isn't really the type of music I would pull out for myself to listen to, but it is inoffensive. I will say though that the closing vocal layering is a bit cringey -- super thin and lame sounding. Yeah, I dunno... I'm unmoved on U2 by this record. By all accounts it is fine music, but I just don't get the broader appeal. At best it is fine, at worst it is cringey. High point for me is Beautiful Day. Mixing could definitely have been better throughout -- I'm all around pretty meh on this. 2 / 5
I love U2. Absolutely love them. But really? Why is this on the list? "Elevation" is a stadium-rock banger, but the rest is solid at best. It's not BAD by any means, but compared to their heights, it's overwhelmingly meh.
Extremely front loaded. Second half doesn't have a good song. Stuck in a moment is good and Kite is ok but some of the singles are annoying. I am a mole and I live in a hole. Also yeah the blueprint for every diminished return that came after. Not good.

I used to like this one, but honestly only for the opening track. “Beautiful Day” is a banger, but pretty much everything after that is pretty lifeless.
This is the point in U2’s incredible trajectory where they settled for the middle ground. Music for the masses, unit selling, tour accompanying, money making blandness. The opening salvo of Beautiful Day, Stuck & Elevation are well crafted. The video for lead single BD at the time whipped up the excitement, beautiful marketing makes a beautiful day, and sell units. But compare these to the earlier material and you realise how far they had fallen. U2 are much maligned these days, but the run of records from the debut up to Zooropa (caution should be taken with R&H, not a true studio album) was where their greatness was shaped. I can remember hearing “seconds” from War for the first time at a mates house. It drifted down the stairs of his parents house and I was immediately under their spell and then I heard New Years Day……wow. This isn’t a record that demonstrates U2’s craft and power, it was where the magic started to fade.
Don't get this pick at all, a few ok songs but this album gets boring fast.
Beautiful Day is a superbly crafted pop song. Catchy indie sounding with the U2 treatment. The rest of the record is fine: some good songs, some duds. Clearly U2 are seasoned pros who can deliver against a successful formula, and this album does just that. But only just that.
I didn't turn it off but I wanted to skip most of the songs. Maybe an extra star for Elevation.

Loved! the earliest albums: Boy, October, and War. Appreciated the evolutions after that, mostly, but after Achtung Baby! everything feels too formulaic and predictable.

My - this record is so front heavy, if it were a cat it would oversteer so much it would spin like a… never mind. A stack of rather decent hits in the beginning and the a tail end of some of the most cringe set of songs in a modern record. ‘peace on earth’ whimpers Bono feebly - and ‘Grace finds beauty in ugly things’ explains Bono hopefully. The Edge’s guitar bits are sparse and interesting actually here - understated and suitable at many times. Anyway the hits are masterfully crafted but as a record this is terrible.

Listen, I don't really like U2, but this was the U2 I was introduced to at the cusp of high school in 2000. I kinda like the singles, and I've been waiting to listen to this one until I was in the right mood. It's a sunny workday afternoon and my belly is full of paneer. This was the smooth adult contemporary pill I needed it to be.
A good U2 album. Minus "Beautiful Day" and "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of", the album feels a little lackluster. The music sounds good, but lacks intensity is the best I can describe how it makes me feel.

U2 is a great band, but their stuff (especially this album) all kinda blends together for me. It's brilliant and boring at the same time.
I knew two songs - Beautiful Day and Elevate. Those were the only good songs on the album and the rest is completely unnoteworthy.
2nd May 2023 Listened on the drive in to London, catching up from the weekend again. Everything out of whack with no phone, podcasts all over the shop too. Weirdly took me back to teenage times and I have no idea why. So found it quite affecting despite Bono's best attempts with his sycophantic lyrics about world peace.

Second U2 album in a week. A few hits, mostly generic.
I've got some terrible memories attached to this album. A pious bully I worked with would play this one repeat and blasted "Beautiful Day" when I finally quit. So it was hard to listen to this with an un tainted view. It feels like a misstep to me. The band had done some interesting stuff during the 90s and then follow it up with something that sound bland in comparison. Would this album even be on this list if it wasn't U2?

All That You Can't Leave Behind is the tenth album by Irish rock band U2. The band returned to their earlier sound of rock with this album instead of the experimentation they had with dance music throughout the 90's that wasn't very popular. This award winning album won 7 Grammy's and received many positive reviews from critics. It's the only album in history to have multiple tracks win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year: "Beautiful Day" in 2001 and "Walk On" in 2002. This carefully crafted album showed U2 returning to their roots and it was immensely popular among critics and the mainstream music listeners. It is probably the best U2 album I have listened to so far, and I did enjoy it.
I can only classify as this as pleasant pop rock that doesn’t have many distinguishable features. A lot of the songs blend together in their sameness Saved tracks: Beautiful Day, New York, The Ground Beneath Her Feet
I've listened to it before, I've listened to a lot of U2 in the past, this was one of their most ho-hum.
I love the up-front misdirection of Beautiful Day. Most of the remainder of the album sounds much like it’s trying to re-capture former glory and while that’s not necessarily bad, it is derivative.

A few good tunes but quite bland for the most part
I can't stand Bono as a singer or as a person. I also don't care for U2's overall sound. I still recognize a couple of their other albums' musicianship, but this one isn't anything special.

Главное впечатление от альбома: блин, как же чувствуется, что это очень современная музыка. Я бы даже не сказал, что она в 2000ом была выпущена. Звучит как будто новинка прошлого месяца... Не знаю, отчего конкретно исходит такой вайб: энергичные минималистичные гитарки, всякие разные глючные эффекты или эмбиент синты. Единственный минус: надо учиться петь. Иногда моно прям конкретно недотягивает, это слегка раздражает. Peace of Earth в сердечко кольнула конечно. Более метафоричная Imagine. Но до уровня Леннона не дотягивает. P.S. Давние пользователи айфонов, помните, что у вас на телефонах какое-то время лежал альбом Songs of Innocence группы U2, хотя вы его не скачивали? А это у них такое промо было, эксклюзивно для ITunes/Apple Music выпускали.

This is a pwnage soundtrack to my childhood weirdly enough. The amount of n00bs I pwned on Halo whilst listening to this album is probably in the thousands. Nothing like sticking someone and watching them explode at the climax of Beautiful Day. First half is definitely superior but can also love the back half in a different kind of way. Not usually a normal 5 I would give but something about this album gets me.
Man, you can say what you want about U2’s repertoire over the years, but this remains one of their best albums.
Listening to this made me question whether I felt more sorry for Bono or my ears, as both felt like they were in pain.

A very sterile, commercial album to me. It sounds very manufactured and made to make a hit, and that’s not really my thing. Beautiful Day is the most popular song off of it for a reason and it’s that it’s the only memorable thing here. Not gonna be a return for me.
U2 I used to have an aversion to u2 but I don’t know why. This is a great sounding album which is always refreshing after some of those early punk rock records. Beautiful day is a great song. Brian Eno production is so good! The chorus is so huge sounding. Nothing else on this record comes close to this. I actually really like Bono’s voice - it breaks up in a John Lennonesque way. There’s some good and some bad lyrics. Feels like the songwriting may have been rushed and doesn’t live up to the production and the better songs on earlier albums. Idk. I used to kind of like u2 and was looking forward to listening to this one. Kinda disappointed. They are so cheesy and that’s gotta be the worst song ever written about New York. They do have some decent songs but they’re not on this album. I’m sure we’ll get at least one more u2 album on this list.
There are so many reasons I SHOULD like this album 1) they are Irish 2) there’s a song about New York 3) my dad listens to this album all the time THE LYRICS AND MELODY ARE SO BAD. It feels like the whole band wrote songs and then he just made some shit up to go on top of it. This is a no for me.
I like this album very much. I bought it as soon as it was released in CD, discovering that U2 was leaving behind its techno-90s, coming back to an style they have paused in The Joshua Tree.

My mom is a huge fan of U2 so it was kind of a nice surprise seeing this and really delving into her music taste. I had only heard Beautiful Day before, but there are much better songs on here. Generally good album. Fave track(s): Elevation

6/10. Why was 90's rock obsessed with Moles? "Elevation" from this album, "Holes" by Mercury Rev, and above all "Flagpole Sitta" all fit this label, which wouldn't be that significant except that I can't think of any songs with mole-related lyrics from other decades. What was it about life in the 1990s that made these weird little animals so briefly and triumphantly relatable?

A couple of slammin’ good songs, but the production quality is kinda “muddled” and the album itself feels like simply a collection of songs. Normally that’s no deal-breaker but the other songs on the album outside the singles are terribly mid, and knowing what U2 is capable of makes this normally 3-star album plummet to a 1-star. It won a bunch of awards though, so U2 kept the sound for other albums like “How to Dismantle an Atom Bomb” and (everyone’s iTunes favourite!) “Songs of Innocence”. Shame on you (2), U2, the potential was squandered.

I have no idea what to expect from U2's sound, I haven't really listened to a lot of songs by them. Elevation kind of pushed me away but Walk On brought me back. The only way I can describe this is divorced dad music. Like I could totally see this CD in some guy pushing 50s glove compartment next to Breaking Benjamin and Saving Abel.

I shouldn't have gone back and rated this one. The first song, yeah, that's a solid song. Solid radio-pleasing U2. You can see it fitting nicely on a greatest hits album. But the rest of this, even with all the high dollar production, just ain't as good.
What is this pabulum doing on the list? I'm no U2 fan but I know just enough to be dangerous, and this barely scrapes their own top five. Still, 'Beautiful Day' gives me massive nostalgia vibes from ITV's shoddy soccer highlights show 'The Premiership', so there's that.
I went on a little U2 kick right around the time this album came out. Owned it on CD, but mostly listened on my iPod. "Beautiful Day" was a song basically written for an iPod, right? Why was U2 so prominent in the iPod space? No one will ever know. But I like this album as a whole well enough. It ain't "the Joshua Tree," but I kinda don't blame them for playing it a little safe after the whole "Pop" débâcle. They had to compete with Coldplay. Speaking of "Pop," I saw U2 on that tour at a stadium in South Carolina with Krista Loheed and Brian Crane. It was fun! I don't really care about seeing another stadium show, but it was hard not to appreciate the effect of that many people singing along to a song like "With or Without You." Glad I went, though still pissed we arrived too late to see Rage Against the Machine open. I'd seen 'em twice before, but at a stadium in South Carolina? That must've been something.
U2 was the first band I ever saw live - back in 1984 on the Unforgettable Fire tour. They were fantastic - great songs to sing along with, crowd getting into it and Edge sounding great. I never saw them again and didn't listen to much past Rattle and Hum, it just seemed like they chased the US market and blanded out. This album is so flaccid and bland. Insipid. I have no idea how they went from almost alternative music in 84 to this - but what a mistake.

It starts strong with a few classic tracks, but the second half is pretty bland.

If I had a nickel for everytime Brian Eno produced an album loosely based around airports, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but its weird that it happened twice. This album sucks btw.
