Not my thing really. OK for background music whilst working.
This sucked
It was ok for some background “music” for a while.
This album was NOT for me. Even while driving around all day. The songs really bled into eachother and I found very little stood out to me as “interesting”. I guess it’s an “ambient” album so that’s kind of the point, but I just found myself bored. This album might have had a different feel in 1992 - but as far as modern ambient music goes, there is much more out there for me.
there are three of the things that i absolutely hate in music… electronic music, overly long and redundant songs and instrumentals. this album has all three. a hard “no” for me.
Why?
This really isn’t my kind of music. To me, this just feels like background music so it felt kind of long. It’s not horrible, just not for me.
Don't need to hear any more electronic music, although this wasn't as bad as the last one. Sounds like background music for a cocktail lounge.
Booooooooring
This is ok as background music in a trendy bar or nightclub but not one to listen to straight. Very clever to produce sound electronically through a PC device but I did find it quite dull and repetitive. Strangely the last track on the album stayed with me for a while, thought that was the best on there.
The soundtrack that has inspired every cyberpunk game of the last 20 years and the template for all lofi beats playlists/videos. I'm sure this is great to get high to, but as an album while sober its forgettable and nothing better than background music.
Álbum totalmente instrumental que chamou pouquíssima atenção.
Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is a masterclass in early electronic music, showcasing skilled production and innovative soundscapes. The album opens with a captivating mix of dreamy textures and ethereal melodies that immediately draw the listener in. Tracks like Xtal and Tha are particularly interesting, blending hypnotic rhythms with lush synths that create a truly immersive experience. However, as the album progresses, some tracks begin to feel a bit samey, leading to a loss of momentum in the latter half. While the consistency in mood is admirable, it can also make the listening experience feel a tad monotonous. Nevertheless, the intricate layering and unique sonic elements keep things engaging for the most part. Aphex Twin’s ability to evoke emotion through minimalism is commendable, even if some ideas begin to repeat. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 1 STAND OUT TRACK - Xtal
At certain times I like ambient. But for a every day listening, it's a tad boring. I don't know if this one brings anyhting new to the scene. I don't know how ambient developed besides Brian Eno. For my pure subjective taste it's meh...
Not really exciting or moving but I guess that’s the point. Pretty much muzak as far as I’m concerned. I did note how much this seemed to influence future video game music though!
I like electronic music. I like Klaus Schulze, the pioneer in the sector. Or Kraftwerk, with a slightly different direction. I like trance or a bit of techno in between. I also like Philip Glass and minimalist music. But this album is boring. I'd rather listen to cars driving on a wet road, as I'm currently doing. That's more exciting. What did someone write in the comments? The discovery of elevator music? Maybe the album isn't a discovery, but it could be the definition of this. 2/5
Not offensive
I just don't get it. I don't know what the occasion to listen to this is other than soundtracks for a movie or something. Will I listen to again: 0%
I didn't expect to like this and I really didn't, but not as much as I'd thought. It was rather boring to me, but I suppose it wasn't bad background noise. 2/5
This wasn’t terrible it’s just definitely not my thing
Not really into ambient unless I am taking a nap.
Video game menu music would be nothing without this album. I can almost hear some really shitty southern rapper over Aegispolis. Green Calx is David S. Pumpkins-core.
i always listen to an aphex twin album on these music list. save a couple songs. then never revisit it again. and for that, this gets a 2
Pretty good background music if I'm working but nothing more then that
Nearly fell asleep listening to this album.
Eh
Chill music for department stores/spas. I don’t hate it but limited to moods/situations. 2.5/5
I really don’t understand why this album is on this list. Maybe I just don’t get electronic music. This is just background music. It’s not a one because it’s listenable. But very “meh”
First I make the computer go *beep*. And then I make the computer go *boop*. 2.5/5
It's ok. Just background noise. Original lo-fi? Would fit in a dark weird edgy bar with some dumb videos playing with no sound.
Ageispolis
Cool as a sound, not for top 1000 I guess
Blobby mourning electronica. I have no idea why this became so popular. For better see Underworld /Orbital / Chemical Bros. I like electronica but will not be revisiting. The best I can draw from this experience is to know to avoid Aphex Twin in the future.
cool beats. That’s all I get
This is typical of the genre for me. Just not enough variety and too long.
Jake Whiting must do this guy’s album art
That was Aphex Twin?? That was just a bunch of cheap walk cycles!!
I found album a bit boring. Was making me sleepy.
Didn't do anything for me, unfortunately 2/5
2.5, enjoyed a few others a bit much
Pleasant if in the mood for it.
If these were the ones they selected, what are the works they didn't select? Anyway, the problem with electronica is that you hear enough of it, and it starts to sound a) the same and b) like anyone can do it. There's doesn't feel like there's any thing in it, and it got boring very quickly. Next.
This sounds like the music in the lobby of an Embassy Suites. It’s pretty good at drowning out your loud coworkers while you’re trying to get something done but not much else.
I like my ambient so much better without a beat.
Ambient music had its time. This reminded me why we're using the past tense here. Also, it's way too long.
"Selected Ambient Works 85-92" by Aphex Twin is a seminal album in the electronic music genre, known for its influential and groundbreaking sound. Released in 1992, it showcases Richard D. James's early experiments with ambient music and techno, setting the stage for his future innovative work. While the album is praised for its innovative use of textures and atmospheres, some listeners may find it challenging to connect with. The tracks can be repetitive and abstract, lacking the melodic hooks or traditional song structures found in more accessible electronic music. Overall, "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" is a significant album in Aphex Twin's discography and electronic music history, but its avant-garde nature may not appeal to all listeners.
Not to many exciting notes. “Ageispolis” is pretty good. “Green Calx” really changes the album’s direction in a different and interesting way.
Not my shit.
Welcome to the JetBlue lounge
2. Not for me, it just blended into the background and I almost forgot it was playing.
5/10
Wasn't that crazy about this one. Music a little too aggressive for passive listening but too boring for active listening. 7-9 minute runtimes on songs that said all they're going to say in the first minute. Maybe this was popularized at dance clubs or something.
Not music; ambient sound
Meh. Not my fave.
I like ambient electronic but some of the earlier tracks just bored me. I liked Green Calx though
Yeah, no
Really tried to like this album - also back in 1993 … but I don’t know what it is .. I just think this is lounge music…
I found it a bit boring, I know that's probably an ignorant thing to say but it didn't do it for me
Not mine
What’s the deal with twins making music I don’t like? (Cocteau Twins comes to mind) It doesn’t help that this album shortly followed Fatboy Slim, so my tolerance for 90s electronic music was already low. I found this to be another slog of beeps and boops that went on for far too long. It’s very forgettable ambient music, I don’t even understand how people could dance to it in da clurb. The only track I found myself enjoying was “Ptolemy” cause it had a nice beat to it, the rest really all just blurred together. I just don’t think this kind of music is my cup of tea. I also have an irrational dislike of Aphex Twin because of the spooky smiling guy on most of the album covers. It was an uphill battle to win me over, and this did not.
Background music? 1.77.
Interesting background music but I don't think I would ever choose to spin this
mild anxiety inducer - should be played at a modern art gallery
Thought I would like it. But it didn’t do much for me.
Uhhhhhh, it’s just computer music.
Noodly
we are the music makers. and we are the queefers of queefs.
It's fine, I'm not big on electronica.
Very repetitive, love this type of stuff but this just went on and on.
Some tracks are interesting, some are unbelievably boring, and it seems like they alternate the whole album, making it not find its rhythm. 2.5/5 Won’t listen again.
Not my favorite ambient music. Most of it sounded like they didn't know how to end the song. Aphex twins are better with there heavier sound.
I did not enjoy this, but I could have enjoyed it less
This was just ok barely. Later works by this artist spark more interest
If you didn’t like this one, don’t give up on Aphex Twin, he actually has better stuff. I don’t like this album particularly much myself
This album screams Call Me By Your Name. It blends in with whatever you're doing, you lose track of time (in a bad way), and is genuinely forgettable. Good studying music though, I gotta give it that.
Background music, nothing grabbed my attention. Nothing wrong with it, simply didn't connect.
sounds like bad club music
I’ve had a really mixed reaction to the ambient stuff on here I’ve found myself enjoying the work of Eno enormously but not being able to abide the bleepy bloops of Orbital This falls somewhere in the middle but on the lower end of it It’s not without its charm but there’s not a lot that I would want to revisit I probably end up as a high 2 but it could be a low 3
Um.
Meh! Fine as elevator music but I'm not sure why I would choose to listen to this, it's just background sound.
🛌
I wonder if any songs didn’t make the cut because they were too engaging? I’ve never been a huge fan of Aphex Twin, although a lot of my “smart” friends seem to love him. Either boring or unpleasantly aggressive. I officially don’t get it.
well it is what it says on the tin - ambient music. which is fine but not what i'm here for.
It has its niche uses, like background music for working, but not much outside of that
Just ambient music and background noise. I usually like Aphex Twin but this was a dud for me.
I’m really not into electronic music. That said I am not the best person to speak on the merits of this album. That said this is a weird but unique listening experience even if I didn’t particularly care for it.
I guess this could work as background music.
Not much to this. No idea why it is important.
don't love it. could be cool for background music but would not just listen to it casually
C'est long. Pour le coup, c'est vraiment de l'ambiant. Heliosphan est pas mal mais sinon c'est plutôt un bruit de fond.
- there’s probably a time for this vibe, like being zooted and dancing - there were a few moments I enjoyed
really ambient but really really repetitive. maybe good focusing music but at the moment kinda makes me uneasy.
The ‘Ambient Works’ title was accurate. I’m not huge on electronic tunes but this sound fit my vibe well - great as background noise while working. It would probably be good in a cocktail bar or when you’re on hold too. I don’t know if that is a compliment, but I don’t necessarily mean it in a bad way. 😂 I just don’t think I’d like it if I was solely focused on what was playing through my headphones. It feels like it’s meant to play alongside your life, rather than define it, if that makes sense.
The only things I knew about Aphex Twin going into this: - the album cover where the guy makes that creepy face - they have a song where the only lyrics are "I want to steal your soul, I want to eat your soul, come to daddy" But this was, as title tried to warn me, just ambient music. It's fine. I have no desire to listen to it ever again. I would give it a courtesy 3/5 because it's just not my genre and it's clearly well made, but I need to knock off a point for the disappointment of it not being quirky weirdo music for quirky weirdos.
Meh, didn't mind 1 song of it but the whole album was a little much for me
Electronic and ambient to be sure. Not really for me but can understand why it is highly regarded.
It's ambient music. I'm not sure what made these works worthy of selection over others. Set a nice, if not bland ambience. 2 beeps out of 5 boops 〰️〰️
Slightly better than ambient works 1/music for elevators.
Beep boop bop
Nicht mehr als „nett“.
hardly 'ambient' in the sense i expected. too much going on without there being anything to really grab you and take you deeper
Not my thing, a bit too trancey for my taste.
trippy, clearly ahead of its time, kid a vibes. some cool moments, but not into techno. 2/5
Good but ultimately boring.
Definitely not for me. The only ambient I want is from its originators.
Niet verkeerd, maar te langdradig
Didn't really enjoy this. Really fades to the background due to the repetition of all elements. Doesn't really stand out.
Cool for like 5 songs, after that it becomes pretty boring background music
Has some cool elements but as an entire album it felt like a bit of a chore.
Good background music when working but would not go out of my way to listen to again
Hmmm. Doesn’t hold up well in 2023 when finding atmospheric/ambient works is easy-peasy. But I imagine this would have stood out in the late 80s.
Not my genre really
This is not worse than the other electronica albums I've heard on this list so far, but it's still a whole bunch of nothing, really. I spent over an hour listening to it but absolutely nothing stuck out about it. It's like listening to a microwave humming for 74 minutes - after a while the sound just gets drowned out and forgotten.
You know what ambient music doesn’t need? A lot of bass.
Revolutionary for its time, but it's rather generic and boring when viewed from today's perspective. Excellent as ambient music but not so much when listened carefully.
It's inoffensive, but it's not really interesting. It sounds like the soundtrack to a movie shot in 1985 set "far in the future" year of 2005. This is what a Hollywood music supervisor from the early 80s thinks society will be listening to while in their flying cars. The Willy Wonka sample on "We Are the Musicmakers" is obnoxious, as is the title.
I wanted to like this. I've seen numerous non-electric music artists that I like cite Aphex Twin as being amazing. Ex: Dillinger Escape Plan covering Come To Daddy I didn't exactly hate it, but I thought it would be darker, heavier. I'm going to have to concede that this is probably an artist better suited to fans of the genre and musicians.
I don't understand ambient music, or why it needs to exist
Pas de doute que c’est ambient. C’est cool, mais ce n’est pas un album.
More melodic than I expected, but the industrial noises did get annoying in places. If ambient means inoffensive background music then this mostly does the trick. This would be a good soundtrack for a video you’re trying to make look cooler than the subject matter really is. Like a retrospective of a late-90s visit to E3.
Pretty ominous electronic ambient music. Every track seemed so similar. The eeriness of it was just too much, closed out with a couple tracks left. 2.5
Would listen to in the background while working, but that's it
Ugh. I was hoping for better for my 365th album - one full year of doing this project now! It's fun and I like doing it, but I will say there has been WAY more crappy music than I've ever expected. When I signed up I was thinking it'd be all hits all the time. But it's more like some hits, sometimes.
Not my cup of tea
Lots of noises for sure
Nope
Som ambiente e pa
Wanted to like it more
I listened to the first half while studying, and it was just great. But I listened to the rest while driving and actively listening, and I gotta say I got pretty bored. It's hard to compare music I like as background to music I like for purposeful listening. Here's the thing; I do actually respect this genre; I know its purpose is not the same as traditional music. But I just don't value it as much as music that I can listen to actively and enjoy it still.
Better than the average 2 star but not by enough to earn a 3. It felt like every song was pretty well done doing anything new in the first 30 seconds.
Electrónica. Dura una hora, pero como es todo una repetición, podría durar siete días y siete noches.
I don't mind this, though I need to listen to it at the right time when something mellow works better, and then I think I'll appreciate it more. Right now it's decent background music for me to work with.
Listened Before? N Meh, it was pretty good for electronica. There's been a lot of electronic stuff lately. I'm hoping it gets better. This one was tolerable, but still pretty lame. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Xtal (cause it's short)
Surprise! This album is all ambient music and it is totallly unnecessary. I recognized one song as it was used as the beat for Ugly Boy by Die Antwoord. Not sure why this album made the list. Definitely did not need to be an hour and 20 minutes. There is no need to listen to it again.
Big fan of AphexTwin music videos, but not this album apparently. Overall, it seems fine but not for casual listening for me. I'll probably reattack it when I'm more in the mood for this.
Didn't listen. Not mentally healthy enough to listen to music I hate, but I'm sure it's still better than Lorde
Right. The Wikipedia page for this album is pretty impressive, so I need to consider that this album has its importance for music history and especially for the electronic scene. On the other hand, ambiance music is annoying and electronic music is (generally) annoying and repetitive as hell. I conclude that I can rate an essential album with two stars when it has the most annoying sequence of songs I have ever listened to.
Pure background music, at best. It's not offensive or anything, but it's not something I would ever plan on putting on again.
3cent
Probably breathtaking in its time, the state of electronic music has moved so far ahead that this ends up sounding a bit boring and dated.
I enjoyed the DIY home bedroom element, especially the distorted bass. The album passed over me though. Not quite background music, but it didn't maintain my focus.
It wasn't a horrible listen, but it's likely I'll never listen to it again. In fairness, sitting indoors on a rainy Thursday afternoon, paying bills and doing paperwork, is probably not the ideal listener setting for this album. That this is a compilation of unrelated works is evident as there is no coherent theme or mood running throughout, which leaves it all feeling a bit empty.
Not my bag at all, but decent as background music. I don't know that what amounts to modern-day muzak is a must-listen.
So ambient I am having a hard time having a feeling about it. Nope.
My son used Alexa to play an Aphex Twin playlist without realizing he was using my spotify to do so. I (not-so-seriously) got on him for messing up my algorithm. Here we go again, but this time it's my own fault. I feel like I give the same review to all of this electronic music. It's all the same to me.
Eh. Not my cup of tea.
Not interesting ambient. There's a formula and he follows it well, I suppose.
This album stressed me out
Ambient House. You can keep it. Nothing to distinguish it from one track to the next. Best track: N/A
I'm not sure if this is a collection or what, but if it is, why did I have to listen to five Bob Marley albums?
Nice chillout muzak, some tracks get lost in themselves and despite a valiant effort the limitations of the genre quickly become clear. There's only so much emotion and soul that can be channeled through repetitive loops and synth sounds.
Ambient weird
Glad I was working while listening because I would of fell asleep.
It’s quite dull but also oddly difficult to listen to. And I really wanted to like this as well.
It's pretty good but I do prefer my synthesizers when they are serving up some melody and some traditional song structures. Though the sounds from this album are gorgeous in spots, the music doesn't connect 2.5 stars
Neeh wel grappig maar te electronisch
Title says it all
Aphex Twins heeft mij altijd voor de gek gehouden met die leuke clipjes, waardoor ik steeds denk dat hun muziek ook leuk is, maar dat is gewoon een dikke vette leugen.
Beetje zouteloos.
From mellow somewhat relaxing background music to annoying pins pops and buzzes. Sometimes I enjoyed it or at least didn't hate it
Very calming.
First time listening. I think my expectations were too high for this album. The tracks felt transient - subtly emotive whilst listening, then immediately forgettable.
I know Aphex Twin for two things. First for his music videos which are the stuff of nightmares. Secondly for making music that doesn't exactly make you want to tap your toes.
While I truly admire how good the album sounds for just being made at home and not in a proper studio, I'm not a fan of house music at all, and without any semblance of a catchy melody or words to sing along with, I struggle to keep my attention on the music.
More mellow than the Aphex Twin I thought I (vaguely) knew. Inoffensive, and some of it's very pretty (Xtal & Heliosphan stood out), but I can only really imagine playing the whole album again as background music. If it came out today (and it sounds like it could've done) it'd be a 2, but 30 years ago it must've been pretty revolutionary, so am considering a 3 for impact. Let's say 2.5.
29th December 2021 Listened on my headphones whilst working in the morning of the 30th before me and jen went down to Lewes to look at a house! Great for background music while working, I can appreciate but don't enjoy dance music.
Fine
Ekki leiðinlegt þannig séð, en rennur (eðli stefnunnar samkvæmt) saman í einn graut í hausnum á mér. Sá ekki appealið við þetta í gamla dag og sé það ekki núna.
Not my type
Непонравилось
This is more stressful ambient music. Could be fine in small doses, or useful in sci fi game or movie soundtracks, but a hell-nah from me otherwise.
I find ambient, electronic music slightly less annoying than other electronic music.
It's pretty good but I do prefer my synthesizers when they are serving up some melody and some traditional song structures. Though the sounds from this album are gorgeous in spots, the music doesn't connect 2.5 stars
Not my cup of tea
Didn't age quite as well as it could have. I generally like Electronica though
I don't think best-ofs should be in the list. I don't know what to expect with this given it's supposedly ambient, but the other Aphex Twin I've heard is scungy UK techno. I'm semi-open-minded about this. Ready to enjoy if needed, but probably going to get the shits at it. Yeah about halfway through now and I'm over it. WAY too fucking long (75min), which I guess is in line with the scungy UK techno tradition of overstaying its welcome. It's ok to have on in the background I guess, but it's not really ambient in the sense I wanted. It's still mostly very clearly house music, just a bit more subdued. Maybe if I was still 19, maybe if I was high on MDMA, maybe I'd get into it then. But I'm not, so it's a 2/5.
I'd give it a 1 but it's not as bad as that jazz album
If there was ever an album that I would like less than this I can’t imagine. Over an hour of just repetitive sound effects! Yuck.
Not my jam. 1.5
This should be considered a must-listen album of all-time? Come on, man. First, it's a compilation, that disqualifies it for me. Second it's just not good enough to be included. It's a playlist you could hear at any dentist's office! WTF, is the Aphex Twin guy the one creating this list?!?! I'm glad she's not singing, I found the other album they have on here to be complete shit. You know AT has same # of entries as Jimi, Petty, Doors, Nirvana, bands that changed R&R. And one more than Journey, Boston, GNR, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, bands who have influenced so many others. This list has become a farce. One star
Wow an hour and 15 minutes of "ambient" works? Groundbreaking. A lot of the songs were about a 10-note riff played over and over again and then eventually, after many drawn out minutes, had very slight variances. I didn't need to hear this album at any point in time, during any lifetime.
UGH!
It's inoffensive enough, but by the end of this I found myself just so annoyed. The repetitive nature of this really ground down my brain. I thought this would be a 2-star for me, but the overall effect on my mood after getting through listening to the full thing is a true 1-star experience.
not my vibe and wouldn’t listen again… did feel like I was on a secret mission on my walk tho
Good for putting you to sleep
when listening to this, I could almost see myself at a rave or all zonked out at like 4am somewhere downtown. I can't say that I enjoyed any of it but I guess it's interesting for it's time and place?
Oh these are the electronic sounds of their times…..I am bored silly with the repetitiveness of each track. They dont change enough to keep me interested. No doubt when they first came out people were hooked with the novelty. Good for trancelike dancing!
Phhh... rubbush
I'ma be so fr this shit like elevator music. If you into House or EDM I'm sure you fuck with this but like, dude they be playing this in like family fun center when you in a heated round of laser tag like be so for real... Favorite track was Ptolemy.
Хоч я послухала увесь альбом, я нічого не запам'ятала. Мені видається дивним, що це вважається кращою музикою усіх часів, годиться максимум як набір саундтреків до якоїсь хоррор-гри. 1,5
esto no tine voz Yisus. Oigan veré a BTS jejjejeje ultra musica de fondo y ni es buena. Bye
Bloop bloop doo doo whirp whirp
Annoying sound effects
No
Even if i didn’t already know that i didn’t like Aphex Twin, the title ‘Selected Ambient Works..’ would not raise my expectations. Unsurprisingly then i dont think there was a single track on this i remotely enjoyed and my god over 7 minutes of ‘We are the music makers’ is enough to push me over the edge.
I did not enjoy the experience of listening to this at all. Hedphelym in particular made me feel really anxious and I genuinely considered bailing out, but I'm 335 albums in and haven't quit an album yet (even Trout Mask Replica!) so I'm not going to let Aphex Twin defeat me. I am clearly a glutton for punishment. I do not "get" ambient music and I certainly didn't enjoy this. 1/5
Obegriplig "musik"
This is basically what I expected. In my opinion: lifeless and uninteresting. Same beats and sounds repeated for what feels like FOREVER and nothing really stands out at all. If I was tripping I think I'd enjoy it. Maybe it's just that this style isn't for me, but I just don't get it.
I remember when this album was the background music to the Weather Channel. I’m expecting to see the 5 day forecast soon after the local radar goes away. It’s also the soundtrack to any generic racing games on the original PlayStation. Yes it’s “music”. Yes people rate it 5 star. Yes the world is filled with idiots. Case in point; this album and the people who love it.
This whole album is just a set of sounds... nothing really too exciting at all, very understimulating, but I guess okay for parts of futuristic-feeling games from the 90s. I don't know what the aim of this is, but I guess there is an audience for it.
Listening to this I'm realizing why The Virgin Suicides is good and this isn't: The Virgin Suicides was half as long; it was musically more interesting; and it had breaks from the ambient stuff.
It sure was a selection of ambient noises. Not really sure why this is on this list.
I wish they had selected fewer ambient works for this album. Goes on far too long. No obvious flow, which was always gonna happen with this kind of project. Weird inclusion on the list.
it's not a music, it is just... sounds
My God almighty this was beyond boring. Not for me at all. I was literally forgetting it as I was listening
Repetitive instrumental electronic music? Hard pass. Best song: I
I got about half way through the second song before I had to start skipping through to see if anything caught my attention. This all sounds like the music that plays on a PS2 racing game menu, or under the monologue of a 15 year old at the end of a British TV show.
Büro, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Was ein dummer Müll. Mir bluten die Ohren.
I'm all for some good background music, but this didn't strike my fancy.
Music to match a pc screen saver. It literally does sound like a teenager in his bedroom
I like some ambient and don’t hate techno, but this is not working for me. Songs are either forgettable or annoying. Too distracting to be background music, but too annoying to listen to in the foreground.
The Aristocrats!
Aphex Twin put the ambient in "ambient Electronic Music Shit". That's the better definition for this album. I almost fell asleep listening this.
👎🏻
This is music like my five month old’s sound machine is music.
Album 1006 of 1089 Selected Ambient Works 85-92 - Aphex Twin (1992) Rating : 1 / 5 I’ll apologize in advance for the bluntness, but this was just a piece of crap listen for me. This is exactly the kind of electronica I struggle with the most - repetitive, aimless, and completely lacking anything that grabs my attention or rewards sticking with it. I understand its place in the genre and why it’s praised by fans of ambient and electronic music, but none of that translated into enjoyment for me. It felt less like music and more like background noise that never developed into anything meaningful. No hooks, no movement, no sense of payoff — just long stretches of sound that left me checking how much time was left. I listened, I tried, and I moved on. This one firmly reinforces why electronica remains a genre I rarely connect with.
I listened to it but now you guys need to send me some Beatles, Springsteen or some Stones to get this nonsense out of my head. This was just one long boring, monotonous track.
No Words. A must? This???omg
Average electronic background music. 3/10
Three minutes in and I know I'm going to struggle with this one today. It sounds like the music that would be playing in the showroom of a vaguely upscale car dealership. It is generic and simple and repetitive and artificial sounding. This album is so boring I forgot it was playing. My wife was with me when I listened to this, she typically likes electronic/ambient music, and she commented several times what a garbage album this is. I do not know why this was included on the list and I can't think of any situation where I would recommend this to anyone. 1/5
So uh yeah I really didn't vibe with this. Ambient really isn't my thing but I've heard so much about Aphex Twin and know that this is a classic so I thought maybe I'd like this one. Turns out no, in fact I did not. Darn. 2/10
Sound like the preset sounds on a synthesizer.
MF’ers out here sounding like the Matrix Soundtrack
This is the 223rd album I’m rating. I never listened to Aphex Twin, but I've heard a lot of good things. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Xtal, Tha, Pulsewidth, Ageispolis, I, Green Calx, Heliosphan, We Are the Music Makers, Schottkey 7th Path, Ptolemy, Hedphelym, Delphium, and Actium. All in all I liked 0/13 songs. I don't understand why people like this nonsense, but not Haunted Dancehall when they're the same kind of trash.
Grok why is my brain mush? Oh its because I listened to 75 minutes of shitty electronic music
Ugh, no good
This was shit
Not my kinda thing
I don't trust anybody who listens to this for anything beyond background noise
Background noise. Yes, it is arguably ahead of its time, but in terms of the actual listening experience it is just an hour and a quarter of meaningless noise
New wave elevator music
just very much not in the mood for this.
Best Song: Xtal Back in 1992, a 19-year-old attends a rave with a ton of Molly in her system, sucking a pacifier, when a methed-out 23-year-old with more tattoos and piercings than face enters. Aphex Twin comes on and the two grind it out with a concoction of Molly sweat, lube, Boone's Farm, and Zima spritzing passerbyes. The memory of that night is hazy except for the same five beats of Aphex Twin that lasted 90-minutes. Nine months later a future, failed YouTuber is born whose resume never leaves the ""we'll pass"" pile of applicants at Trader Joes.
Alien elevator music. Left me feeling scared, not a fan
Boooring!
What am I listening to???
I really find stuff like this boring
Xtal 2.3 Tha 0.6 Pulsewidth 1.6 Ageispolis 2 i 1 Green Calx 1.3 Heliosphan 2.4 We Are the Music Makers 1.6 Schottkey 7th Path 0.8 Ptolemy 0.7 Hedphelym 0.8 Delphium 1 Actium 0.6 Score: 1.284615385
Definitely ambient
noise
Pass Best Song: Xtal Rating: 2.0/10 (terrible Stars: 1/5
This put the numb in mind-numbingly boring. Really? Why did we get more than one album of elevator music? This is only classified as music for those people who don't listen. Considering this list quotes itself as 1001 albums you must LISTEN to it seems a little oxymoronic.
I was an elementary teacher for 25 years and developed incredible patience. This album tests that patience. I’m sure it has some musical influence but there’s little enjoyment. A simple four minute repetitive drum solo seems like eternity.
Det kan jeg slet ikke lide!
Meh
0,4/5
If you like listening to synth-sounding backing tracks, this one is for you.
I gave Selected Ambient Works 85–92 by Aphex Twin a couple of listens, but honestly, most of it went in one ear and straight out the other. The album feels like it's caught in an endless loop, never really building toward anything or resolving. There’s a drifting, meandering quality to it that, for me, fails to engage. It comes across more as ambient background music than something to actively listen to—and not in a particularly memorable way. At best, it sets a mood. At worst, it's electronic music at its most forgettable. Favourite track: Xtal – largely because it's the first track, and at that point, you’re still interested and hopeful for what’s to come. Least favourite: Pretty much the rest of the album. It blends into a single, indistinct soundscape that left no lasting impression. Album artwork: I actually love the cover—minimalist, iconic, and a perfect fit for the album’s aesthetic.
.......it's electronic music. It's neither bad nor good, it's just there? I dunno, great working music, but just not enough interest for me to tell one from the other.
Music meant to be heard but not listened to.
1.5
Sounded like a kid with a casio keyboard.
It just went on a bit, didn't it? 5.3/10
I’m beginning to feel like I missed out on understanding any appeal of electronica because I wasn’t doing E at clubs in the 90s like apparently everyone who contributed to this list. Every fucking record sounds the fucking same.
Grating background noise. Not a fan.
Boring ambient electronic album
Mind-numbingly boring.
If I'm going to listen to this for an hour I'd better get a plane ticket at the end
Tar mig inte igenom hela plattan. Sjukt dåligt.
I've never forgiven him for the Window Licker video. And I never will......
Une certaine idée de l'enfer.
Banging "hold" music. Zero reason to listen to other than beats to sample.
I thought this would be one of the most interesting albums so far but it was actually one of the hardest to get through. I thought it would be good background music but it was difficult to determine when one song ended and other began, it was soooo long, and it wasn’t that interesting.
nie mój typ
Didn't care
No, not for me chief. Just a lot of white noise and tumbleweed.
WTF?
a million monkeys with a million synthesisers, given enough time will churn out the works of Mozart - guess we need to give them more time cos this is just a collection of sound bites and noises WHY IS IT SO LONG?!?!
Polarisiert.
Not sure how it got SO many listens on Spotify. Unremarkable background noise. One long irritating song.
There are only a few electronica/techno bands that I would pay attention to, and I know this band may be considered the grandfather of techno, yet there’s nothing here that tickles my ear.
Nice ambient group. Nice having this type of music at times.
It's not bad, but not for me. I would not listen to this for enjoyment as there is no emontional connection what so ever. It's ok for background music.
Zzzzz Two hours later I thought the album had automatically restarted ....it hadn't ...it was a fly caught inside my office window, desperately trying to get out
Not my cup of tea at all
I’d expect to hear this crap at 4am while on 17 pingas at a terrible techno club.
1 hour and 15 minutes felt like about 7 years...
It didn't take long for me to decide I didn't like this
If I were to open a hair salon or spa in the midwest and wanted to project oan image of trying to hard to be nre age eccentric while bringing "a bit of the big city to middle America" I would loop this album. I can practically taste the hair spray just listening to it.
I'm allergic to electronica so this was an absolute nightmare but I'm sure he was a cool 13-14 year old.
Thought aliens were gonna abduct me listening to this... Not my thing.
Nothing against electronic music but found this uninteresting.
Mag ich nicht. Ist das Funk?
God, I fucking hate ambient music
Interesting but it was literally just sound so it didn’t click with me
Just noises
Pure garbage. Why would anyone listen to this on purpose?
Ambient Electronica…75 minutes of it. And it is everything I feared it would be. Completely unengaging, completely unremarkable, completely forgettable. Certainly NOT essential. Background music for those time when you want to know that the music won’t intrude on whatever it is you’re doing. Actually, it didn’t take long to get downright annoying. I started skipping songs part way through, and couldn’t last till the end. 1/5
Don't think I need to listen to ambient music in any way before I die. I think my life is perfectly fine without it.
"Selected Ambient Works 85-92" is the worst album I've rated (so far) on this list... but, after over 300 reviews, it's the second worst album. A nightmare of baby powder, fluffy clouds, used diapers, and wretched hot boxing.
This was SO LONG and it was not pleasant. One song actually hurt my ears with the repeated notes.
Maybe one or two songs. But a whole album of this! No.
Ambient electronic. No thanks.
Nope
So much noise
There is not a soul in the world, including Brian Eno himself, that could convince me that electronic music as a genre is the least interesting thing to happen to music. I don't care about influence or technical prowess if the whole album is a bag of shit that a braindead coma patient could out perform. Whoever added this album on the list was trying to upset me and it worked. I'm on vacation. Give me something good. 1/5
