Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Really good sound. Kind of reminds me of a mix of the shins with some hints of the Beatles.

Somewhat alright, decent vibes to have on in the background but nothing I'm too thrilled by

A good pop album is in dire need.

Really not as bad as some of the reviews make it out to be. The songs are musically enjoyable and not at all whiny. Good balance of lyrics and soft beats with your regular electric guitar. Not heard of these guys, but surprised to not have. 6/10.

This was this Brit pop it’s sounded like. I listened to it on a plane and never slept so good. I technically listened but don’t remember. It was boring.

Could’ve been a fan at the time, but today it seems rather generic and low risk, low gain material.

Voice annoying but some really catchy guitar riffs…

Boring Britpop. But it was one of the first Britpop albums. So a bump for that. Is it awful? No. A bit of glam rock fused with the new 90's sound. Decent I guess if boring is too harsh. Sounds like every other pioneering Britpop band of the time - Suede, Pulp, Manic Street Preachers, etc. At least now I know some more music history. Moving on.

Eh, it's fine. Sounds like a million other bands. Wasn't bad, but I absolutely don't need to hear this again. How Could I Be Wrong caught my attention.

Not remotely memorable

Were people looking for a new T. Rex in 1993? New Wave was either five years too early or five years too late. The vocals are perfect and the album sounds great but songs are not memorable.

A lot of this is pleasant listening but a lot is also a wee wispy and soft for me.

Fine indie album.

Down the middle 90's rock. Nothing exciting, but does what it says on the tin.

Pffffffff … it’s ok. I’m reviewing so many of these albums like this, but it’s true. It’s not bad. It’s not good. It’s there, and that’s ok.

Solid brit pop.

pleasant-sounding but simplistic? idk

I did quite enjoy this; it’s in high 3, low 4 territory for me, but still pretty groovy.

Yo, moyen

3 for me

This was fine. Sounds like a band you'd go out to listen to on a lazy college night. They probably have one song everyone really likes when they play live, but it isn't on this album.

I do like this more than candy coated Brit pop. The message seems a tad more important than the music so many of the songs remain forgettable despite the care put into crafting them.

Bit samey

Never heard of The Auteurs before, so I went into New Wave with no expectations. The first couple of tracks didn’t do much for me, but things started to pick up around “American Guitars,” which had a solid hook. “Don’t Trust the Stars” is another standout, and the strings on “How Could I Be Wrong” add a nice touch of depth. “Idiot Brother” gave off some definite Dylan vibes in the lyrics and delivery, which was a cool surprise. Overall, a mixed bag — some solid songs, a few forgettable ones, but not a bad listen for a band I knew nothing about. Favorite Song: Early Years Least Favorite song: Home Again

Nothing to go nuts for, but better than most of the 90s Brit rock on here so far. Rounding up, feeling fine about it.

Starts off alright but then some snoring commenced.

Assumed I’d hate this

Loved the first song. Liked the second. And after that it was a meandering stroll through tunes that were ok but had no real hook or pull. Fine to have on in the background but nothing too special. Like a moody britpop, lower-energy Pulp.

3.1 3x

just fine 3/5

Not bad.

This is just comically British. I don’t want to dip into any B-word blasphemy lightly, but it sounds like The Beatles (but 30 years too late and without the cultural influence).

This sounds like Robyn Hitchcock at times, which I don't mind at all, but overall I found it a little repetitive to truly make a mark. Not bad at all though.

There were a few songs I had to jump forward because they went in too long without being interesting. Otherwise, it was kind of meh.

A pretty good album, Bailed Out was the only real standout.

Another new one for me and an enjoyable one at that. 3.5 stars.

Dat hardop fluisteren. Het werkt best voor één nummer. Maar je raakt het toch snel zat. Verder ligt het allemaal ok in het gehoor, maar wordt het nooit echt interessant.

It’s ok

This album is full of pretty alright songs, however some can be a little repetitive. Standout tracks: Show Girl, Early Years

✅✅✅ Idiot Brother What I liked about Yankee Hotel Foxtrot I liked about this.

Quite decent actually!

Great?: No Terrible?: No Influential?: No Experimental?: No On English radio during Robert Dimery’s formative years?: Yes

Not bad. Enjoyed quite a bit of it

ugyanaz mint az elozonél, oké volt, korrekt volt, de untam :D

I didn't hate this one, but would never want to listen to it again.

It sounds like a blend of britpop with an indie twist (a bit typical from the indie US sound of this time, quite heavy and noisy and fuzzy). While the mix is interesting, nothing particularly stands out (maybe Early Years in the end, with some punk grit in it).

I don’t believe I’d heard of The Auteurs before today. I’m not sure I’ll remember them a year from now either. This music was the definition of fine. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s the kind of music that you wouldn’t be surprised to hear on an indie film that gets mainstream attention. If a song from this album was on the Juno soundtrack, my reaction would be, “Yeah, that makes sense,” and then I’d forget all about it the next day. It was fine to listen to, but definitely forgettable.

Ennyi country zene után egy harmadrangú underground brit zenekart meghallgatni olyan, mint STD-szűrésről kifelé az első cigi.

-some seemingly more obscure 90s British pop rock (I dare not say Britpop even though I think that’s what this is). I’d never heard of this band before and at first I was annoyed by the kitschy vocals, but it had a few good songs and kept it interesting with the instrumentation. I’ve heard much worse -Favorites are Starstruck and How Could I Be Wrong

My friend (and musical compadre) was always into these, whereas I was into the two other records mentioned in the write up in the book, Suede and Blur. I dunno, this just never clicked. I think same with Black Box Recorder. I'm mainly familiar with Luke Haines for being especially grumpy in interviews. It's clearly good though. At times on American Guitars and Starstruck (in fact in lots of songs) he sounds very like Robyn Hitchcock, who we both love. After listening I feel much the same, I enjoyed it well enough, don't feel like returning to anything in particular. The 1st track and the last 3 tracks stand out the most however.

I liked this well enough! It was a fun, spooky Halloween album. Didn’t leave much of an impression though — I probably won’t return to it.

OK I suppose

vid första lyssning så trodde jag att jag skulle gilla det mer. men en stark trea

Nice album. Sounds really good. I imagine if Elliott Smith had formed a band, this is what it would sound like.

I didn't mind this too much. I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics, but I liked his vocals and the music.

most average album I've gotten so far. 0 chance it should be on this list, but inoffensive more than anything else

half of this sounds like lidl john lennon beatles songs and the other half is bland indie - 2.5 rounded up

ágætis breskt gítarindie með gáfumannapopps ívafi. 3,5

Album sounds like it came out about 10 years too late. Sounds more like early 80s new wave than anything 90s. The songs that lean into this aesthetic or lean into more of an early 70s Lennon/McCartney/Harrison thing are my favorites. I see the Auters referred to as Britpop but I have always considered Britpop to have come later with bands like Oasis, Pulp, Blur and the Verve. I also don’t hear enough pop on this album to consider them as Britpop but instead more New Wave just as the album says. Some good songs but nothing jaw dropping to me.

Maybe not the most original album title but rhe content was acceptable.

Норм

It’s… fine? If someone told me they liked this album, and I should listen to it - sure, it’s pretty decent. And I get that this list is an imperfect science - but there are some pretty big hitters that aren’t on here. And yet, this is. Feels more like an album for the “1,001 albums that flew under the radar and you might enjoy” list.

This album is right in my wheel house. Being a huge “Britpop” fan it’s cool to find lesser known bands in the genre. Though this band hated the term its “style” is all over this record. The songs are pleasant to listen to and love the guitar tone. Almost has a bit of Psychedelic feel (very minor) with the way the singer sings. It’s if Kula Shaker/Eels melted into a band Stand out Tracks Bailed Out American Guitars Starstruck Idiot Brother 3.5/5 (could turn to a light 4)

Not terrible. Most songs sound the same though. 2.5 stars.

What genres this? Sort of britpop….I think? Britpop Drab? Brit Borepop? I’m pretty sure there were 1001 better 90s britpop bands than this. It’s absolutely fine but just a bit drag and generally naff. Almost two middle of the road and drab to stir any sort of emotion, positive or negative. Always a worry when the opening track is the 2nd most popular track on Spotify and it’s pretty terrible. Only downhill from here. 2.6

More britpop, nothing terrible, but nothing really stands out.

Didn’t do much for me.

Early 90's alternative album. Easy to listen to but nothing particularly interesting or catchy.

just nice

Was fine.

Kinda my thing, but way to plain for me to love it.

Solid Brit pop that rolls on the darker side (which seems like it should be the norm, not the exception). I’ll revisit. 3.5/5

Why is it called New Wave if it sounds nothing like the genre? Sounded a lot more like generic alt rock to me. Was a fine album but went in one ear and out the other.

I'm a little confused as to why this is on the list. Enjoyed it enough.

This was alright, I guess. Nothing special, or memorable.

Not something I would normally listen too

Another Britpop band. It's not bad, not great either.

Nice to listen to and enjoyable. I bet it was indeed important for Britpop, but in 2024, it sounds like any other Britpop we can get from Soptify's recommended playlists.

Intriguing though mediocre, the album's distinctly British indie-retro-glam identity predates Britpop, sidesteps nostalgia, and avoids sounding too of its time.

Laulutyyli on vähän semmoista tykkää tai ei. Semmoista kuiskaavaa. Mutta hyvä vanhempi alt rock levy. Parhaat: How Could I Be Wrong, Early Years

It's a decent album, but does it belong on this list? I seriously doubt it. It's neither revolutionary nor particularly good for its genre; maybe just a touch above average. I saved a song or two, but I'll probably forget these guys exist soon enough. 3 stars

Not the best of the britpop bands of the time....just ok...

I hadn't heard of this one. It was fine, but the singer's voice kind of got on my nerves after awhile. They'd probably be a pretty good opening band.

I like home again, but there wasn’t anything that really stood out for me on this album.

Totally fine! I’m not huge into this kind of music but I get how it’s appealing to some people. I’m just not depressed or English enough to connect

This album managed to "redeem" itself halfway through somehow. Am I the only one who heard a little Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars in this? Maybe even a little Pixies?

British indie rock or new wave or whatever you call it, I think it is vastly over represented on the list, which has been mentioned a few other times. Pretty good album, nothing too crazy or notable to me other than being good background music to work to.

I guess I didn't hate this, but I also am not sure why it's on this list. It didn't seem particularly interesting. Maybe it was influential?

I can hear a little George Harrison influence here—which is nice. But the album sounded too repetitive to me.

it's okay, a little bit better than generic Brit Pop that's on the list

Quite nice.

New Wave was a pretty good album. Most of the songs did sound fairly similar to each other but was all that indie rock sort of sound that i do like. The album also didn't go on for too long for that style to get repetitive enough. It did get to the point where it (like the Louvin Brothers album i did a while back) was pretty tough to pick out a favorite and least favorite song due to all of them sounding really similar but i was able to pick some for this review. This album is good at what it does, it just has the issue of being a bit too much of the same thing throughout most of it. Best Song: Starstruck Worst Song: Bailed Out

Proto-Britpop, paving the way for the likes of Blur and Oasis. Rubs out of steam by the end, but still has a handful of decent ideas.

Many of the reviews have properly covered this - it is fine. I liked Valet Parking!

It's fine 🤷‍♀️

it was ok.

Kinda cool, but can't get into it

Favorite Track: Show Girl

I liked it. Sure. Not all that original. Not all that exciting. Nothing wrong with it. Here it is, an album from the early ‘90s. Yes. There it was. 3/5

Another meh Brit pop album

NOT NEW WAVE. It's actually another britpop album. While not the most popular band from the scene, they're still pretty good. New Wave is a rather tender album that leans heavily into it's jangle pop influences and a bit of glam rock too. My god though, this album is a lot of the same. It often feels as though they found a groove that worked for them and then stuck to it as long as possible.

Not a bad album, but didn't really connect with it. Solid 3/5, but probably won't listen again.

It’s always interesting listening to music from a time period that I love, but I have never even remotely heard of the band. This is some moderately good alt rock that drips 1993. Maybe in some parallel universe, this album is talked about over 30 years later like it resides in Valhalla. Parallel universes will warp your mind if you think about them too deeply, just like the concept of eternity. Go read “The Midnight Library” by Matt Haig for more on that.

Perfectly serviceable indie pop. Every track does the job.

This was like a throwback to the 80s.

New Wave met Ronnie Flex?? Deze is wel heel underground Geen slechte muziek

I would so like to like this but I wasn't there at the time and it seems like such a chore to trackback over something that doesn't hit me between the eyes from day one. It's not unpleasant but I've heard so many bands like this in the 80s let alone the 90s.

This album was hugely, ok. Nothing stood out for me. Nothing bothered me. I appreciated that it was not pop, but it did not pop. Not great, and not grating.

I mean this is fine but not outstanding in any way at all

Soft rock - easy listen. Not very interesting.

Possibly the ponciest band name that we've had so far? I quite liked the album though, but wasn't particularly memorable. Definitely sounds more modern than 1993, could easily have been released in the 2010s I think judging by the sound. Show Girl was a decent enough opener, had high hopes at that point, but unfortunately that was as good as it got. a low 3/5.

All right, but not great

I had never heard of this band. This record was fine enough, pretty poppy with elements of like chamber pop and glam in it. Interesting enough, but at the end of the day, the Britpop is just not for me.

Harmless and toothless - they weren't for me when I was an obsessive indie kid of 23, they definitely haven't aged as well as I have for the past 30 years

In various reviews people have complained about a percieved British bias on this list. Mediocre crap like this seems to prove this bias, why is this on this list? It is not original, interresting or influential so again why is this on this list?

i’ve been meaning to listen to this for a while now after i heard Show Girl a few years ago. because of that, i was expecting to like this more... while i did enjoy it on a basic level and would listen again, it can be pretty dull lol 3.5

Correcto.

Never heard of 'em before. I was kinda into it. It might warrant more listens.

idk it was fine

I'm legally obliged to remind you that I hate Beatles every time I hear something Beatles-like. But this was suspiciously fine, I started liking it towards the end. I hope it's not a gateway album, don't want to end up on the streets doing dodgy things for quick money to buy another Beatles record

It's... competent. Definitely not the stuff I was listening to in 1993. Don't think I'll seek it out again. Why is it on this list? Because it's "the first britpop album" in the wave that gave us Oasis? I don't get it.

I had never heard of this band, but quite enjoyed this. I really dug Show Girl, How Could I Be Wrong, and American Guitars.

Honestly okay

Ok, nothing earth-shattering but nothing too annoying either.

Not bad. Good sound, nice dynamics.

Started out sounding like something I’d really be into, but it didn’t hold up. The singer’s John Lennon impression gets pretty tired after awhile and there’s nothing really special about any of it.

I'm quite into this. Needs some repeat listens. Luke Haines seems to want to recast himself as a sort of rakish, silent-era matinee baddie. Not sure if that's entirely successful but it is fun.

I enjoyed it but nothing really stuck out to me

Pretty good, kinda got Bowie vibes, middling 3.

Interesting sound, pretty decent album

Solid indierock, but not really standing out

The foundations of Brit-Pop.

That’s the way to do a soft male voice without sounding like he’s whinging (take note Coldplay and friends). Not to my taste but bearable quality.

Indie, britrock, easy listening, mid, male, simple but good, nice flow, strings and keys floating around, but slightly boring and not impressive for more than 3 stars

They have a very good sound going here. It does kind of all blend together, though.

I don't think I've heard any music from this band before, so I'm glad I got the chance to listen to this album today. I enjoyed it.

Pretty good

A really good album that sounds way more "classic" than other albums of its time and place. Memorable songs with melodies that stick in your head. 3.5 stars

Sounds '80s and '90s at the same time.

I've never really heard an album like this before. Kind of unique sounding. I'm still wrapping my head around it. It's not really my cup of tea, but it's not going the places I expect it to go. Like, is this Britpop? what IS this? I'm not exactly enjoying it, but I'm just intrigued. 3/5 for confusion and general entertainment.

норм, но не кажется что ещё сто прослушиваний улучшат впечатление

A good all around record, but nothing really stands out. A little replacements + husker du? Yeah, but not really anything crazy.

A kind of light weight brit pop, with delicate singing over it. The formula is pretty consistent throughout the album... a lot of it blending together. I think Show Girl and Housebreaker were the most memorable, though the album didn't have many highs or anything that was too unusual or challenging.

Nothing impressive but at least no harm done.

I mean yeah, sure. Like Andy said - wouldn't turn it off but probably also wouldn't think to put it on.

Indie. Ni fu ni fa.

01) Show Girl - 7,0 02) Bailed Out 7,0 03) American Guitars - 6,5 04) Junk Shop Clothes - 7,5 05) Don't Trust the Stars - 6,0 06) Starstruck - 7,0 07) How Could I Be Wrong - 6,5 08) Housebreaker - 7,0 09) Valet Parking - 7,5 10) Idiot Brother - 7,5 11) Early Years - 7,0 12) Home Again - 7,0 13) Subculture (They Can't Find Him) - 7,0 TOTAL: 6,96 (70/100) Here's another band I've never heard of. It's OK-ish. Unoffensive and pleasant listening but nothing more than that.

As a child of britpop I was amazed I'd not heard this. Seems like it came just before and paved the way for a lot of music that I love. Knowing that context means I'm inclined to be more generous, but putting it against its followers shows it to be a weaker album.

I probably should have paid closer attention to the lyrics because, based on the bio, I'm guessing this would have appealed more. As it is it just feels like some ok early-90s alternative brit-pop. 2.5 stars.. rounding up

When i saw the album cover and the title i never thought It would be the kind of music that is in there. I mean, it's not bad at all, but it doesn't give you the surprising new stuff for a debut album.

My 11 year old loved it. It was pretty good background for driving and conversations.

Better than most 90s British rock, but I hate most 90s British rock. I still wouldn't choose to listen to this again. 2.5/5

nada especial, para mi gusto

New to me…had a very familiar sound. Got thru the whole thing…not my jam…won’t listen again.

absolutely standard 90s Britpop strumming.

Fine but, ultimately, forgettable. Liked Show Girl and Early Years

Fine. Nothing really stood out to me other than it sounds like a precursor to The New Pornographers. A few songs into this album I found myself wanting to listen to TNP’s album Mass Romantic instead of finishing this album.

That’s a three from me, dawg.

funky, aber nid so min jam

something new, het mer gfalle, aber nöd ussergwöhnlich

Clean distortion and soft voices. Benign and without teeth. Musically, it was much better than I assumed it would be. The singer's voice sounds like Tal Bachman with a British accent. That is not appealing.

This one grew on me. Or the album got better as the track numbers increased. Who knows. The album started off sounding like generic alternative rock music. Boring AF. But by Early Years, I was enjoying myself. I liked the hidden track to close it out too. They like to use dynamism in non-generic ways though like the sudden audio drop after the first line in Show Girl or the annoyingly slow triplets in Home Again. The dynamisms do not feel like they fit though, like they put generic rock through the unique dynamic filter.

Not bad

Never heard of them. Instantly I feel that Brit pop wave but this is a little different. Vocals are interesting, kind of Bolan inspired. It gets kind of boring though. Thought I was going to like it more but it’s a solid 3/5. Not enough to be a 4 I think.

Solid. A bit repetitive

B- Show Girl 4 Bailed Out 3 American Guitars 3 Junk Shop Clothes 4 Don't Trust the Stars 3 Starstruck 3 How Could I Be Wrong 3 Housebreaker 3 Valet Parking 3 Idiot Brother 3 Early Years 3 Home Again 3 This was solid from an unfamiliar artist.

Pretty good mid 90s brit-pop.

This was pretty good. Nothing mind blowing, but enjoyable. Feels like a solid 3.5.

I think it's time to let history forget the Brit Pop era of the '90's. There were a few moments, but we can go ahead stop pretending like it was ever a thing. I started this album thinking it's the best of said era, even suggesting that maybe the best of Brit Pop never hit in the States. I turned against it after four songs, it got old in a hurry.

It took a bit to get into this, I liked the middle 5-7 and end 10-12 songs of this album. I'm not the biggest fan of the singers voice, I wish it went a little harder like in the song "How Could I Be Wrong". The instruments have song great points in this album nothing to complain there. I like lyrics and most of these lyrics on this album were a bit all over the place.

A pretty chill rock album, there wasn't a whole lot that stood out to me but it was nice.

Love the surfer alt pop vibes.

Favorite Songs: Show Girl Absolutely solid listen but not a single song that really stunned me.

Some decent songs, kind of all melds together. Decent

3/5 nice but not enough

# The Auteurs - Show Girl Overall Score: 2.86 -> 3 Favorite Tracks: - Subculture (Hidden Track) - Early Years - Junk Shop Clothes - Housebreaker - Show Girl ## "Show Girl" - 4:06 3.5*. Catchy, great levels and vocals. ## "Bailed Out" - 3:44 2*. Good levels and production. Just missing some driving force in the song. ## "American Guitars" - 3:31 3*. Driving, fun. ## "Junk Shop Clothes" - 2:42 3.5*. Wonderful. Great duet between the piano and acoustic guitar. Vocals are perfect. A bit Beatles-esque. ## "Don't Trust the Stars" - 2:25 3*. Great driving drums. Bassline is very good. Vocals are too breathy for me to give it a higher score. ## "Starstruck" - 2:59 2*. Nice. ## "How Could I Be Wrong" - 3:53 3*. Catchy. ## "Housebreaker" - 2:57 3*. Catchy. ## "Valet Parking" - 2:55 2*. Chill. I like the bells (xylophone?) on this track. Good lead guitar. ## "Idiot Brother" - 5:45 3*. Good alternative sound. ## "Early Years" - 2:40 3.5*. Good alternative sound. ## "Home Again" - 3:24 / 2*. Not bad, but repetitive a bit to me. ## "Subculture (They Can't Find Him)" - 2:13 (hidden track; it follows 20 seconds of silence after the end of "Home Again") 3.5* I love hidden tracks! This one is super catchy. My favorite track on the album.

Niet echt mijn ding, ook niet heel slecht. Hoor wel invloed op andere bands.

Hey look at me, I'm rating albums again! And this one was hipster which I like but a little too hipster at times and not hipster enough at others. It worked well in the background of work.

I listened to this album about a week ago, and all I remember is that I was going to give it a three. Don’t remember much else.

Alright, nothing special.

More melancholy road tripish music.

Not bad but the songs were very similar. They all sound the same, except Home Again, which was better. Stand-out: Home Again

Decent but pretty generic Brit Pop. Hadn't heard before and probably won't go back to it

It was fine but I feel like I've heard better versions of this sound. I'm sure if I was in my teens again and putting in the listing hours it would grow on me.

Early 90's British rock

Nice enough.

Mid pulp

This album might be the first example in this list that I’ve had an issue with the balance of. The band seemed to overpower the vocals often, which is a shame because the instrumentation felt quite standard, especially in comparison to the lead singer. All that said, this album was good enough, and successfully scratched the British rock itch. And I definitely appreciate the flow of the album, despite some of the structure within the individual songs feeling repetitive. Highlight: Don’t Trust the Stars Lowlight: Bailed Out Sneaky Hit: Home Again

Was worried it going to get a bit shoegazey, but brightened up

I can see how this may have felt important in the 90s. It’s definitely different; I’m just not sure it holds up. The electrified acoustic on “junk shop clothes” sounds particularly dated. I am a hater of this general geoperiod in music, so take my review with some salt.

Ok but generic

Starts strong then all just becomes samey

This album has some nice classic era alternative rock, but other than that, I don't really understand why it is on this list. There's some interesting stuff here and there, but, for the most part, it seems pretty standard for its time. Even the Wikipedia page has a quote describing this album as not being the band's best effort. It's not bad, but it doesn't stand out in any meaningful way that I can detect 3/5

I had never heard of this band or album going in. Nothing really notable or terrible about the music. Sounded as if they wanted to sound like the Beatles, but only the John Lennon led songs. I got tired of hearing that voice by the end.

Ganska bra men låtarna låter så lika.

Melodic indie rock. 3.5 rounded down to 3 due to not having any particular standout tracks.

Easy listening. I especially like the instrumentals in this album. Nice surprise 3.2

This is some perfectly pleasant Britpop, very listenable, not very edgy. I respect that they were forerunners of the genre, though I assume unwittingly.

I am whelmed in Brit-rock.

A bit meh to be honest - couple of stand-out songs but sounds an awful like lot an awful lot of other stuff

I liked it

This was surprisingly good. I can not shake the feeling off me that it was the singer from death cab from cutie.

I liked this more and more as the album progressed through various shades of brit pop/ alt rock. No real high points, but no low points either. It felt somewhere between a 3 and a 4 star album to me.

J'entends pas j'ai allumé le ventilateur

george harrison de walmart ....... pas horrible cependant

This definitely reminded me of 90s alt rock. It was okay to listen to. Nothing stood out.

A solid listen, but prefer Black Box Recorder for the full Luke Haines experience.

good vibe music. I'll say it, I can't believe how much Death Cab for Cutie sounds like The Auteurs.

Somewhere between Elliott smith and echo and the bunnymen, it’s not bad but didn’t really grab my attention

First track is pretty solid and I actually quite like the guy's voice. But pretty boring overall and definitely doesn't need to be on the list

It's fine, but nothing really stands out either. I'll probably never listen to this again.

Reminded me of George Harrison

first time listening

It's fine, it sounds good, doesn't hurt my ears or annoy me. But it also doesn't feel special at all. I wouldn't change the station but I wouldn't bother to find out who the band is. I liked How Could I Be Wrong. 2.5

Never heard of this band or album before, but I like it like a darker britpop band, reminds me a bit of suede. Deserves to be on the list.

It’s quite good, like a cynical and more guitar heavy Divine Comedy. I can see how it snuck in at the start of “Brit-Pop” and has aged better.

For being pop rock from 1993, IMHO it sounds a bit ahead of its time. At times it sounded pretty 90s, but overall I thought it had a fresh sound. More of a 3.5.

midt på 3 ass

I didn't hate this. I didn't love it. Not much stood out for me.

Very reminiscent of Sloan, which isn’t a bad thing.

Feels like I’ve been transported to an alternate universe where I like The Smiths. This LP definitely stands in the shadow of Morissey and co. vocally, but carves its own unique niche with some biting post-punk guitar and simple yet delightfully odd arrangements. Didn’t like every track on here (the slow ones especially veer far too close back to the source material), but enjoyed hearing something a bit old and a bit new to break up the Brit pop monotony.

Interesting alt rock album. Not quite my tempo.

This was mopey, with Morriseyish vocals but not bad musically.

Interesting. Was not really aware of them but they were quite listenable.

Nouu ging wel lekker

It's pretty nice but it gets less interesting as it progresses

I saw "Britpop" as a descriptor for this album and immediately thought "ugh, no more Britpop, please." As is often the case, I ended up being pleasantly surprised. Standouts: Show Girl, American Guitars

I found it kind of boring

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Early Years (11) 2 - American Guitars (3) 3 - Don't Trust the Stars (5)

Pretty chill alt rock sound

Had the makings of a five star somewhere in there but never found jt

3.5/5. Proto britpop.

Unfortunately lumped in with the Britpop umbrella which the leader Luke Haines hated. Its likeable song driven guitar pop/rock that lost its way at the time. The bits of cello are nice. It kinda washes over me a bit but otherwise its all tickety boo.

73/100: This was a nice indie rock album, but "nice" is the most impassioned I'll get about this album. If this album were a Pokemon, it would evolve into "AM" by the Arctic Monkeys. That's not to say this album is a Magikarp and "AM" is a Gyrados, more like this album is a Charmander. It's a good ("nice") album just like Charmander is nice, but upon inspection, it's really clear that they haven't reached the ceiling of what this type of sound can achieve like other similar artists have. I might be interested to explore some of their other stuff to see if it gets better, but I doubt I'll find myself listening to this specific album again in the future.

Don't really like the singers voice

Never heard of this group, though I do recall this being an album that a number of people on the subreddit agreed was a great unknown find from this list. I, uh, well it's not doing all that much for me. Certainly not bad, just another indie alt, new wave type of album, pretty much what the title suggests. Not technically new wave since it's '90s but not worth getting into the semantics. A couple songs I dug but overall it's just okay. Favorite tracks: Show Girl, How Could I Be Wrong, Idiot Brother. Album art: I do like this cover, a mysterious man in some sort of makeshift head covering. The black and white works well here with the bordering. 3/5

I dunno man, that was pretty nondescript and a tad on the dull side.

There was a nice aroma of melodic Indie here. Some good tunes. Worth another listen.

Mira ah, no conocía a este grupo

Not bad, but not remarkable

Nice vibe, didn't leave a huge impression.

Thought this a was really solid 90s alt rock album. Felt like they had an arctic monkeys and alternative 90s Brit rock style combined. The guitar riffs were solid and the singer does a good job. The drums were pretty solid too which is something I don’t always notice in albums. Would listen to some of it again. 6.9/10

Very British

This is a pleasant enough to listen to album of Britpop. I initially was a bit underwhelmed, but as the album progresses I think the songs improve. On repeat listenings, I imagine this could grow on you quite a bit. Fave Songs: How Could I Be Wrong, Early Years, Idiot Brother, Don't Trust the Stars, Home Again

Not loads to say, but liked this all the same, made me think of Suede.

There is nothing wrong with this record but there is also nothing that makes it worthy of being on this list.

Not bad, but not great either. This is another British album taking up space on this list with so few r&b, rap, or country albums

It was listenable. Had some very light shoegaze elements that I enjoyed.

3 stars. It was okay. None of the songs really stood out to me though

Very Hangover Friendly Rock. And that's a good thing.

Not bad

Vibes à la Destroyer, mais en moins bien Prefs: Show Girl, Junk Shop Clothes, Housebreaker, Valet Parking, Idiot Brother Moins pref: Early Years

Jangly brit pop? Fave track: Show Girl

Huh. I like Luke Haines' schtick usually - love his Baader Meinhof side project, and have listened to quite a lot of his solo stuff, but haven't listened to much of The Auteurs... Gave this two listens and it didn't massively grab me. Fave track - "Early Years", maybe? Or "Home Again"? Dunno, didn't really hear any stand out tracks...

The first review on the Wikipedia page mentions that this isn’t their best record. It’s a good listen

My first thought upon seeing an album literally called "New Wave" by a British band, after listening to what seems like 376 British New Wave bands on this list was "God dammit" Butttttt this album is pretty good? I like the vocals a lot, and the melodies are catchy. I like the melancholy without dipping into full-on Smiths-style ennui. If more new wave was like this I think I'd be less likely to say "God dammit" when I see a new wave album. Closer to a 3.5 or even a 3.75, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

This is the first one of these I’d never heard before. They’re kind of fun, basically Blur but a little slower paced. Think I like Blur better though.

It was alright, a bit samey throughout. 3*

I quite liked this, they are very tuneful and there are shades of Bowie and Bolan in the vocals. The album starts well but there aren't to my mind many standout tracks and it gets a bit samey after a while

trying it. bracing for early 90s.

Very solid indie rock album, but nothing special. I enjoyed it and could see myself using it as background music to set a chill mood. The lyrics were good enough, but I mostly found myself zoning out and listening to the guitar. Gave me Oasis vibes. Strong 3, nothing more

This really did remind me of a lot of artists that came out like Arctic Monkeys, etc.

Kinda like a 90s band inspired by Bowie

Nice if largely unremarkable

Never heard of them. Might have arrived on the 90s scene either too late or too early. Worth a listen for sure. Better than Oasis ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The vocals keep taking me to the Rocky Horror intro “Science Fiction/Double Feature.”

Early alternative, it's OK

I forgot to rate this as soon as I listened but I liked it! Just can’t remember it so here it goes with a 3

In one hear and out the other

Not awesome, but not bad either. I don't get why it's on this list, but it's a good one-timer.

Not bad, but I'm probably going to forget the name in just a couples days..

This didn’t make much of an impact on me either way. A general impression of glam-inflected English alt-pop, somewhat arch lyrics that never really hooked my attention. Perfectly competent but I wouldn’t seek it out.

I thought this was good, but not very exciting or interesting.

I have never heard of this artist before today. So far the music is alright, nothing that jumps out or is spectacular. I might be interested in listening to some of their other albums as well as this one a second time.
