Reviews (page 3 of 7)

no idea who these guys are, but it sounds fine!

Production: 12/20 Songwriting: 15/20 Innovation: 13/20 Bangers: 10/20 Emotional response: 13/20 =63 I liked it. Low 4.

Not sure if I ever heard of them before, but it was a pretty good album

pleasant, heady britpop fav track: idiot brother

AK: enjoyable 90s alt. 4/5

very lovely Brazzaville vibes 4/5

A perfectly fine album just a genre that's not my usual fav. Good listening music though.

good stuff

This is good... no doubt requiring more intense scrutiny!

It was ok

The first song really impressed me then nothing else held up the same.

Fine,I guess. Unremarkable Britpop with notes of Suede and My Life Story. The music is good but the vocal delivery is annoying. I can't see why it merits a place on this list. I was following indie music fairly closely when it came out, and I don't recall it being regarded as especially important or influential even then.

The music is ok, the singer sounds bored. Lacks any passion or conviction. Very meh album. It does seem to pick up towards the back end. My favorite track being " Early Years."

T'was alright.

The music is pretty good, but the singer and his strange way of singing makes me cringe

I had this album recommended a few days before it was generated here some where so I knew about it but did not listen to it then. Its a band that preludes britpop and of course combines new wave, indie, madchester and whatever sounds were popular in the UK in the early 90s. Its a fine listen but nothing that special.

I have given so many "3" or "4" scores lately. I really want to give a different score to this one. It's not bad, so it's hard to give it a low grade, but New Wave is also not such a great album that it stands out and begs me to listen to more of the Auteurs work. This is a semi-early Britpop album, though Suede was on the scene and there are early British forebearers to Britpop that put out albums in the late 1980's. This is like a more mid-tempo version of Britpop that would come to define much of the 90's music scene in Britain. It's fine and there are catchy songs. This appears to be another British band that gets thrown in the book despite not being terribly outstanding (to me). If someone put this on and forced me to listen to it, then I would not argue and yell. I also would not demand I hear more. Sounds like another "3" for me. Show Girl Bailed Out Starstruck How Could I Be Wrong Idiot Brother Early Years

I like Lenny Valentino from the album after this so was expecting something with more energy and darkness, but this was actually a bit tame in places. Maybe it needs a few more listens to reveal its subtleties but couldn't shake the feeling this was the meat free Pixies or Suede.

It was fine at first; the vocals became annoying as the album continued. Sounded like Al Stewart, which could not have been what he was intending.

First listen

Alright alt rock. Getting burnt out of this list and not running into anything that really im really connecting with or recognize value in without looking it up

Didn’t know what to expect with this, but I’m liking what I’m hearing so far

man can the next album please just not be mid EDIT: going forward I will try not to let my pissy moods affect scores and reviews to this degree. I did give this two listens, if broken up over a few sessions. There is stuff to like here for sure. I liked the song "showgirl" partly because I thought the line was "I married a showgirl, that's me wife" and I knew it probably wasn't actually that but didn't want to look it up. "When I first met you, you were not house trained" does not have the impression I think they're going for. Or maybe it does? They sound like weird slightly offputting theatre kids and maybe that's okay. But the music is still just not that memorable. It' 2.5 not a 2 though, which rounds up to a 3.

Middle-of-the-road new age rock album. Nothing really stuck out, but I enjoyed hearing some harmonica in the middle of the album.

It was fine

3★/5 [06.14.2026] 06.17.2026

Folks, this is what a rock band sounds like when the musicians are three times as good as the vocalist.

Basic britpop

Not bad. Never heard of The Auteurs, even though I was a child of the 90's and into my indie pop/rock at the time. This is clearly the case as the listening history for all of the songs on YTM are just into the tens of thousands. Popularity aside, it was quite good. Definitely sounded like a 90's record, and seems to have aged quite well. Not sure my life is any better for it, though.

Housebreaker // 2.5/5

Okay but not la politique des auteurs; methinks this group should rename it self

First off, The Auteurs were much better than I remember them. Nothing here is terrible. But there is a desperate lack of variation that made me wish it were over several times.

It felt full of album tracks but nothing stood out strong (or weak). Low 3.

Its aight. I did like the jangly guitar

Somehow this felt like a 2000's album aping a new wave album in places. I'm not sure that's to it's credit?

There’s a certain irony in both the band name and the album title. Both pretty much imply things that are pushing the envelope and being produced by people delivering a distinctive vision - for me, this was pretty much just an early 90s indie rock sound and not particularly groundbreaking. Certainly not bad, it’s an easy listen and it could perhaps grow on me but there just wasn’t enough that grabbed me enough to make me want to go back and give it time to do so.

Equally inoffensive and inconsequential. 3/5

mostly OK but some tracks pretty enjoyable

Not a bad album, sounds decent enough, but just kind of blends into itself. Nothing really sticks out. All in all pretty forgettable.

There's something here that I am just missing. I like it but I'm not connecting with it the way that I thought I would. Dark Britpop should be something I'm really into, in theory. 6/10

Vou resumi BASTANTE. Quase ganhou o mercury prize, o disco eh maravilhoso então faz sentido. Minhas favoritas foram “Valet Parking”, “Starstruck”, “How Could I Be Wrong”, “Home Again” e “Housebreaker”.

Of all the albums I have ever listened to, this is certainly one of them. The music is fine. Vocals don't do too much for me. Mostly inoffensive but very forgettable.

Not offensive, but not all that engaging either.

"Mom, can we get some Britpop?" "We have Britpop at home." the Britpop at home: New Wave by The Auteurs

Weak vocals, uninspired lyrics. No hook.

Britpop prototype

Not alot to say about this sad little brit rock record. It is. It does those thing and is from that place. I dont hate it by any means. I also dont love it either. It j7st was nice enough to listen to and thats kinda it. Got a song or 2 saved but those are the fastest and most energetic songs toward the end. Thays not what most of this album is about though. Its ok though. I had a good enough time

Meh! Nothing special.

Not my cuppa. It’s pretty but I couldn’t engage with it. It slipped into the background.

I like ‘Housebreaker’ and ‘Bailed Out’. I think the lyrics are supposed to be the album’s strength but they can be relentlessly cynical. He has a rather specific vocal and emotional range. N but the album’s cool, the cover, the aesthetic. It’s different from Britpop and I respect him.

I like music like this. Some songs I really enjoyed, but I couldn't single them out after listening, so it should probably stay at 3 stars. 3.5, maybe?

Is this because I said all Brit Pop didn’t suck yesterday? Because I take it back.

Nice record

mmmmh no special feelings about this one

Didn't enjoy this one as much as me lads but still a strong showing.

Lite roligt, lite drygt, lite soft, lite kefft. Lite lagom sådär

It was pretty good! But a bit unmemorable

so good smth new like suede a bit

Solidness

It's alright. Songwriting isn't bad but it doesn't stand out very much among its contemporaries and I probably won't go out of my way to hear it again.

good stuff

Quite an easy listen, but often found the vocals and piano disappointing

Niente di particolarmente interessante. Super snob.

Being an American who's been into Britpop since I was a kid is a bit of a weird experience, simply because there's always essential context that has gotten lost somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic. For example, the stranglehold Oasis had on the British popular consciousness when *Definitely Maybe* came out makes a lot more sense when you know what sort of mannered mid-tempo preciousness was serving as the backdrop at the time. Luke Haines thinks the whole Bolan whisper-sing thing is a lot more arresting than it actually is, partially because Bolan didn't use it *all the time* or even as his default. And the general vibe here is...sedate, which doesn't match at all with what I suspect this band's self-image was. There are a few upticks in alertness, most notably "Early Years," but mostly this is just part of the furniture, as I'm told they say across the pond. I don't hate this but nothing about it grabs me.

If you're a huge John Lennon fan, is it fun that so many artists want to sound just like him? That was my main takeaway for the new Cut Worms album (Transmitter) when I listened recently, now it's my lead-off note here. Maybe I'm just more sensitive to it lately, but that doesn't make it less true!

It was fine. I liked the style and all the songs were decent. But nothing really hooked me.

Ni muy muy ni tan tan

Really enjoyed this

I think I was expecting more from this? Always heard that Luke Haines was some kind of master songwriter but the music sounds like mid-level Britpop. Still, enjoyable enough

Lovely stuff RGP 👏👏👏👏👏👏

I enjoyed this

Quite nice on the first listen. 3 stars.

Incredibly listenable.

Not sure about the vocals, they also get quite lost in the instrumentals most of the time. I did like a bunch of songs though, Bailed Out in particular

I have very little to say about this one... It is fine... and it sounds like they wrote the same song 10 times in a row... Mid 3

This is a record that sounds great and I’d potentially move to 4 stars with more listens. I listened to it twice and I heard a solid album from start to finish and liked it more the second time around, so it may be a grower. I don’t hear something that I could consider a masterpiece, and there may need to be a nostalgia factor for most to consider it as such.

Very mid

Nice, 80s-sounding Pop-punk. May listen again, but probably will not.

Unknown band. Pleasantly surprised. Good tunes. Good album.

I mean I liked it.

Hade vela ge 2,5.

Ok doesn't really stand out like analbum I must listen too

Synkeä kansikuva tuo mieleen Joy Divisionin ja Bauhausin kaltaiset post-punk-orkesterit, mutta levyn sisältö olikin turvallista indie rockia 90-luvulta. The Auteursin New Wave on taas yksi kolmen tähden levy; ihan hyvä, muttei tarjoa mitään erityistä.

nice enough

It feels like there is a 4 or 5 star album there, but the singer seems completely unable to match the energy of the songs. It’s a strange listen because of this, like some guy is singing karaoke along to a good album.

Parts are a bit dreary but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This is an album I think I would like the more I listened to it

This album is perfectly fine, perfectly pleasant, completely inoffensive, and perfectly forgettable.

Decent.

Pretty chill album. Kinda samesy sometimes, but it was quite nice to listen to.

3/5 This album was fine. I've heard better new wave, and this became background music real fast.

A nice album, not really sure why I like it

Classic alt. Pretty solid!

Enjoyed this more than I expected

before: never heard of these guys, kind of expecting post-pet shop boys or something... after: mellow, subtly catchy, like the vibe. ended up adding a bunch of songs to the rotation, it really picks up steam in the middle imo...Don't Trust the Stars -> Starstruck -> How Could I be Wrong -> Housebreaker -> Valet Parking was a really solid run

The voicals, the rhythm, reminds me so much of Daniel Amos (DA) in the 80s-00s. Pretty cool. 3/5

Indy Britpop. Nett zu hören, für mich nichts besonderes. 3/5

decent

Pretty good actually :o

If I needed to hear it before I can get to the next Britpoo offering in the list., I guess this one was just ok. Was "britpoo" a Typo you ask? It actually should have read Britpop, some of which has really been britpoo. ⭐⭐⭐

Nothing super exciting in this album. I listened to this as background music and if i ever come back to it, that's what it will be used for. Not a very memorable album, most of the songs sounded the same, but i liked them. Felt like an extremely mediocre version of the beatles. I don't really get the hate for this album, it's not amazing but i didnt think it was bad! However, nothing set this album apart from other emerging bands at the time. 6/10

Some alright songs in here, and the quality is really good in terms of performance and production. But it's not very memorable, so I think I'll only listen to it a few more times then forget it.

Bra britpop! Nytt band för mig

Meh it’s ok

Their debut album. Rock / Pop. Some nice British wit and sarcasm in the lyrics. Overall a decent album without any real banger on there. Indie Brit Pop filler type thing.

Nothing bad, nothing outstanding. Maybe there's something more I'm not considering or missing that would make it pop for me. It's okay tho. I don't mind it.

Not a bad album, but the only thing that got me excited was the back half of Home Again

This album isn't New Wave, literally unplayable. Anyways, another band for the AC/DC club of making one really good song over and over again, just now they sound like Oasis but a little darker. They have some great lyricism, especially in the first half of the album, but the instrumentals really start to get samey by the halfway point. It'd be funny if there was some actual New Wave in this, though.

It’s not too bad. Well nothing very good either. But I can’t tell why I feel this album was “born” not “made”. The vocal does loads of push and pull. And very nasal too. But it’s part of this album. I don’t like it but I also don’t hate it.

I'm not sure how to rate this one. The singer's voice was grating in places but there were some phenomenal guitar riffs on multiple songs. I think if the vocals were changed I would have really enjoyed this album. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Three stars for the composition and musicianship.

A bit boring but not unpleasant. Sounds like something you'd hear in a supermarket.

Not sure why this is on this list. It's okay-ish. I liked it at first, but as it goes on, it sort of drags. A generous 3/5.

I wanted to like this more. There are some pretty good tunes on here with nice guitar playing. But the vocals are somewhat ineffective, and over the course of the album the toothless nature of the sound wore on me. Not bad, not great.

Twee. Fine. Nice guitar work but otherwise a heavily trodden path - granted mainly by their followers

It's fine whatever but I don't think it's very essential.

I knew of the auteurs but I don’t think I’d ever properly listened to them. So it all sounded very unfamiliar but they had a lot of ingredients I like. Good delivery and pleasant listening.

Never heard this before. I rather liked it. Great production. And I dug the singer. The songs were silky and sophisticated. I might have to check out more from these guys.

This was new to me and I liked it!

A band that I am not familiar with but enjoyed listening to them

Reminded me a lot suede, mildly britpoppy but with a glam side. Quick Google suggests they toured together a lot and suede beat them to the Mercury music prize by one vote, so fair bit of history there. Surprised they aren't more well known (or it could be one of those where they are but I'm ignorant) but from the last suede album we had I definitely prefer suede, and I'd say the auteurs are currently where I'd have previously placed suede - nice enough but a bit insubstantial. Worth a listen for sure but didn't win me over.

Show girl och How could I be wrong är fortfarande väldigt bra. Även Bailed out och Early years gillar jag. I övrigt lite pågående utan något som riktigt griper. Rekommenderar också ett av Luke Haines senare band, Black Box recorder, i synnerhet skivan England made me.

It's good but why is it here. 7/10

anti brit pop that is actually good and also actually anti britpop and not secretly just more britpop like blur

This was enjoyable enough but I'm not sure why it's here.

it was pretty standard. not bad at all!

I liked this album more than not, although it's nothing remarkable

Not bad for soft spoken britpop smiths worship.

Pretty good

Show Girl 3.6 Bailed Out 3.5 American Guitars 3.4 Junk Shop Clothes 3.2 Don't Trust the Stars 3.4 Starstruck 3.3 How Could I Be Wrong 3.3 Housebreaker 3.5 Valet Parking 3.3 Idiot Brother 3.6 Early Years 3.4 Home Again 3.4 Score: 3.408333333

This feels a very weird inclusion is a band member a son of the list creator or something it seems a very small band with a fairly standard for the time sound. Perfectly pleasant but 100% is not great.

This album is pretty nice. Not much of my liking, to be honest, but it has good songs. It's at times a bit bland, and a very safe one for me. There is not much variety and, as for what is there, sometimes it's not that interesting. But, overall, it's nice.

Didn't mind it.

Competent, but largely forgettable.

I like jangly guitars and this album has 'em. It took a while to latch on to this one, though. The second half of the record is stronger than the first half. While the name of the album is "New Wave" the music ain't. Instead of synth, we get solid piano lines and cello. That, mixed with the acoustic rhythm guitars and even occasional xylophone, give this album some nice texture. The nasal vocals were a bit distracting in some points. Overall this is an OK album. It's not happy-clappy pop, it's kinda disturbed (which is fun). Second listen was better than the first. I can see how this might grow on someone. Favorite song: How Could I Be Wrong?

In the USA they pronounce this "otters."

Beatlesque Show Girl Bailed out Don't trust the stars

Random thoughts: * I guess this was a proto Britpop band. I couldn't quite place it when listening to it. * It sounded familiar but I'm sure I've never heard it before. * Everything was pretty good here. Nothing crazy special but also nothing really bad either. I'd listen again but I'm not sure this would ever be an album I recommend. Perfectly mid.

New Wave is an interesting listen—not because it hits you aurally, but because it seems deliberately understated. It has that early-Britpop DNA, all the mannered vocals and stylish melancholy, but it never quite pushes into the sharp hooks or swagger you expect from the era. The whole record feels… light. Not flimsy, just politely reserved, almost as if it’s allergic to taking a big swing. Nothing here is bad. It’s well-constructed, carefully arranged, thoughtful. It just never really grabs you by the collar. Luke Haines clearly had ideas, but they come out more as sketches of a mood than as songs designed to dominate your head for days. And Andy’s line is pretty hard to beat: “We have Blur at home.” That’s basically the vibe. Competent, occasionally charming, but overshadowed by the bands that took this sound and turned it into something undeniable. A pleasant listen—but not a sticky one.

We have Blur at home.

You can blame this/bow down to this for essentially providing the template for Brit-Pop apparently. Self-knowingly, ironically wry lyrics, breathy Iain Broudie esque vocals and poppy melodies - that start to blend in It's of its time. Best Tracks: Show Girl; Junk Shop Clothes; How Could I Be Wrong

Perfectly adequate indie pop, and there lies the problem. It was just adequate, nothing stood out, no tune to make your ears prick up or your feet start to tap. Average, very very average.

Þægilegt alt rock en engar flugeldasýningar.

Brit rock, nothing attention catching

Music is quite good, nothing too special. First song, Showgirl was unique and enjoyable. All the other songs felt like they were pretty samey

Decent enough. Pretty good but not standout.

Liked the music - decent 90s alternative. Didn't like the singer though.

*New Wave* I really don't think they sound much like britpop as they do like 90s Indie pop. Even though I liked it pretty well enough, I didn't find it really interesting or groundbreaking personally. Some of the songs sounded like lesser Bowie songs and other songs sounded like something that would be on the *Friends* soundtrack. I probably would have liked it better in 1993 than I do here in 2025 (7.35) ★★★½

A bit bland, but mostly okay. 3 stars

More like the Bore-teurs. Musically speaking this is absolutely fine and pleasant. Very clean and classy. A mix of jangle, early britpop and indie plus a cello in there somewhere. I wouldn’t say any of the tracks were overly exciting or interesting but Don’t Trust The Stars and Idiot Brother felt like the hookiest, most powerhouse instrumental highlights. Luke Haines is a sucky vocalist though. Very weedy sounding and it’s like he has this Leslie speaker effect that makes him into Strongsad from Homestar Runner trying to sing feebly underwater. Even if it wasn’t spoiled slightly by the soggy vocals it would still be one of the more plainer New Wave albums we’ve had on the list.

Eh, it's fine. Definitely some tunes on here but easy to ignore. Annoying vox. Too boring for 3 but also not offensive enough for 2, feeling generous today :3 Fav song: Show Girl

Good enough.

I am a sucker for Beatlesque rock. Solid if not especially memorable album.

Enjoyed. Only criticism is that it is a little mono paced.

A bit different than most music from this time, a few slngs are quite interesting, gave me a bit of the same vibe I had with Eels in the 90s although not exactly. But overall not good enough for a lasting impressiom. 3.4 stars

I see where Deerhunter gets their sound

It was OK

Another album I missed in it's initial release and 1001 albums has introduced me to. Total brit-pop, can't see why the dude rejected that label. Solid pop tunes all the way through. It's a 3 for now, but my suspicion is more listening will increase my enjoyment and might have lifted it higher.

110 No está mal. Pensé que era de los 2000s. Piola. Nada más que comentar?

Starts strong then becomes too samey

Another introduction. Nonetheless it sounds quite familiar to me. I really like this one and after a few runs it is potentially a four stars album. But the vocals aren't my favour. 3,5

Actually quite liked this though stunningly egocentric. Instruments and lyrics come through and it fits my idea of an album. Scrapes a 3

Haven’t ever worked out if I like Luke Haines. Keep meaning to read his book. I liked this mostly. Not a great singer but still something about it that means I will likely give it another whirl. Better than a lot of Brit pop fodder. Show Girl is a strong opener and the only one I’d heard or at least remembered. Enjoyed Junk Shop Clothes, Don’t Trust the Stars and How Could I be Wrong. Strong 3. Reminded me to play Lenny Valentino.

It's ok, feels perhaps a little generic, but maybe because of all the inspired-by-it britpop I've heard already.

How did every chorus go the same?

Back-to-back britpop releases. I was a little worried after listening to Supergrass's In It for the Money, how I would feel about this one. I actually enjoyed this more than I was expecting, the variation in sounds explored was enjoyable. A little bit too pop rock leaning for my tastes though.

Sounds like something I've heard before. Very 90's 'new wave' (pun intended). Not earthshattering, but still pleasant. 3/5🎉

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Liked it didn't love it.

It sounds like a lot of other bands playing in the early 90s. Pretty generic sounding. Not great but not terrible either.

Alright pretty casual rock Nothing too catchy 2nd listen with it a bit louder was actually alright needed to hear the bass lines

Never heard of this band. Cool vibes. Cool stuff.

Solid indie album that stands out from the Britpop slop of the nineties.

yeah more brit pop, it's....fine...I just don't want anymore

'X but shittier' seems to be an apt description here. Take your pick from a variety of Xs: britpop bands, alt-rock bands, post-jangle-pop bands, 80s indie rock bands. I dunno, it's serviceably made but I'm struggling recall a single thing that might make this interesting, even in '93. I'm feeling nice, so it gets a 3, because Home Again sounds like it might have influenced Ted Leo.

Good vibe background

Its fine

I didn’t hate this. I didn’t love it, either.

A band I’d heard of but never listened to. Pleasantly surprised and will give them another listen

Very pleasant, I don't know if it will leave a big mark on me, its fairly standard, but a decent standard

Ok, it's not bad. I don't know if it belongs on a list of musts, but it can be enjoyable. It can also feel long and it's a 45 minute project. I'd listen again, I wouldn't judge anybody for loving this, I just don't find it particularly special. 3/5

I am British which apparently is required to enjoy this, yet I consider it astoundingly meh

Lowkey uneven.

This is a really solid album. I really enjoyed How Could I Be Wrong and Housebreaker, but I wasn't really sold on the vocal performance the first time round on a lot of these tracks. I liked it enough though that I plan to revisit. 3 Stars on first listen.

New to me and very good! Grabbed me from the first song and kept it rolling. Chill style, good grungy sound, just no bangers.

Whispery, 90s English rock band. I liked this album but it didn't wow me.

Cover 6 Almost didn't like this album. Seemed to be missing something. Like it was almost Morrissey or almost Queens of the Stone or almost Oasis Age but neither Morrissey, Queens or Oasis. I listened to it again. I'm not good at listening to something once and determining if I like something or not. I often need to listen to an album 3 or more times. Not even twice will do. Which sometimes makes reviewing albums a great chore. I hit the "like" button on maybe two songs but overall the songs were decent.

Decent alt/indie record.

Not as bad as the previous reviews suggested. Not a band I’m familiar with but can hear a lot of Blur/Damon Albarn influence. I actually had Parklife by Blur on this list yesterday so easy to make comparisons and spot the similarities. Whilst the musicianship of Blur is head and shoulders above The Auteurs, I did find myself enjoying this album more than Parklife. Some strong melodies which I like, mainly sung in minor keys giving a melancholic brooding sound which again is to my liking. Unlike Damon Alburns chirpy cockney style which irritates me. 3/5 18/9/25

This is an interesting album that sounds like Elliot Smith's slightly less poetic (and as a result, less dark) brother formed an alternative rock band. Good listen.

Unfortunately read general reviews on this and to class the album as Britpop is just lazy categorization of non-American early 90s indie/rock. The album itself is mostly unmemorable, with a couple of lively tunes that had potential. Giving it extra stars just to counteract they're-British-so-therefore-BritPop-and-inferior-to-US-rock.

Good but not memorable 3.4

Like mellow Buzzcocks. Not bad.

Pretty good.

Dark pop...mmm OK

Why did they make the best track a hidden track? Bringing the 70s and early 80s into the 90s, similar vibe to like the dandy Andys.

Lenny Valentino was my only point of reference with The Auteurs —sharp, catchy, and full of swagger. I expected more of that energy, but this album didn’t quite deliver. The album felt more like a slow burn than a spark—interesting in concept, but lacking the punch I was hoping for. I didn’t hate it, but I found myself drifting. Maybe it’s one of those records that rewards repeat listens, but on first pass, it left me cold.

I'd never heard of this band before. I quite liked it. The sound is very 90s alternative but different than the sound of that era here in the US but familar as well. The piano adds a different sound. His lyrics are quite odd & quirky which I like. My few knocks on this is the songs can run a bit long & they all sound to blend together.

it was alright, I really liked Home again but not much else

I also like Marc Bolan

meridiano de Greenwich

Never heard of this band. Decent dark glam rock.

I am not a big fan of Britpop, but this was an enjoyable listen. I will listen to this again.

Found this really interesting because for me it was the missing link between early 90s and Brit pop that I didn’t know existed. Not too bad.

This seemed pretty generic and forgettable on my first listen through, but when I paid more attention I think there wasa bit more substance there. Not saying this is a favorite, but there's some cleverness and decent music going on here and there.

Junk Shop Clothes.

It was fine but a but slow for my taste.

Alright, but nothing that stands out. Already forgot everything about it one day later

It's not bad. If I had more time, I think I could appreciate it more. Just like Coldplay and Radiohead, etc.

Good britpop album, maybe the first in the genre. It also doesn't sound as dates as many other albums from that era.

It was fine, not sure why it was on this list tho

I thought I would get annoyed by his voice, but that didn't happen. Catchy songs from start to finish.

Pretty good! Never heard this before.

This was surprisingly decent!

Sounds like standard mid 00's coffee house indie rock, except it is from 93. Seems like they were breaking ground to help a number of the later acts.

Yeah, it's britpop. An utterly, unremarkable genre. The inclusion of this album is definitely a representative example of this list's biases.

Very listenable, but not all that much stands out

Not my favorite, easy listening

*Beatles meets Oasis. Rating – 7/10

I mean, ‘meh’ kind of sums this up. It’s not particularly memorable. I remember Lenny Valentino being a banger but that’s not even on this album. I swear the compilers went through the Mercury shortlists and picked out the least worthy albums for this list. Weird

Music is good but the songs get repetitive. They all sound similar, by the last one they all sound the same.

presages britpop but not as good as a lot of the albums that would come in its wake. good guitar sound tho

It really reminded me of a different artist, but I can't put a name to it. The problems of old-age, eh? Anyway, this was another nice album. Full of nice melodies and lyrics. It just never really got my attention fully though. There was no track(s) that stood out. It was all a bit monotonous and samey.

Better than I expected considering it’s Brit pop.

Never heard of this band, solid album.

I enjoyed this a fair amount. Do I think this belongs on the list? Probably not. But it’s really fun 90s pop rock album. Not likely to listen to this again, but still pretty good.

I've never heard of the Auteurs before, and I'm pretty confident I've never heard any of their songs (certainly not from this album), so it's nice to get something new and different (to me at least). It's a little hard to get past Luke Haines' voice, which seems to hover on the edge of being really annoying and not nearly as full as he probably imagined it was. But despite that distraction, the tracks are largely interesting, and a few stand out as better than the rest--mainly "Show Girl", "Junk shop clothes" (although his voice really gets in the way) and "How could I be wrong?"; and a nod to "Bailed out" and "Early years". Given all the references to formative-Britpop in the Wikipedia and "1001 Albums" entries for this album, and comparisons to Suede and Blur, it appears that this collection went all in on Britpop and its ancestors and descendants. Nothing wrong with that, but it seems like Britpop was much more interesting and relevant to the Brits among us, and not so much to the rest of us.

I was expecting either some poorly done punk,or some electronica from the title. What I got was neither. I quite liked it actually. Not outstanding, but very creditable. Will probable never think to listen to it again, but it is worth it. Got to be a well earned 3

Why do these guys just sound so... British. Mellow and chill but not too interesting. Last song is Baader Meinhof lol

They sound nice but not particularly memorable.

It was alright, no standout tracks for me though

3.5 Good surprise — I had very low expectations for this album.

5/27/25. First time hearing about this band. Pretty simple but enjoyable songs! Seems like a deeper cut under all the "Britpop" bands coming out during this time.

I didn't dislike it by any means, but I feel like it just didn't really hit for me. It was good, just not special if you know what I mean

I like it but I feel like I've heard the same thing but better before. Favourite: Show Girl Least: Junk Shop Clothes

A surprise! I’d never actually heard of them but they were right up my street. Moody music with peppy vocals. Very 90s. It worked for me

It's perfectly ok in my book. Britpop gets a bad name, and it's definitely overrepresented in the project, this being a prime example. Like I enjoyed it, but probably not groundbreaking or world changing. 25/05/25

It’s time for yet another album that shouldn’t qualify for this list. New Wave by The Auteurs is a nice jangly, catchy, and buzzy cocktail with hints of glam and classic pop, sure, but nowhere near the best 1001 albums in history. Solid, but definitely not essential.

enjoyed more than i presumed

Not in 1001 but not bad

not a great new wave

It had some 4-star songs on it, but didn't seem like a cohesive 4-star album. I really loved the valet parking song. The simplicity of many of the songs was really great.

Sparks / Bowie tinged indie. Luke is an interesting character but this is only essential to fans.

The song writing here is fine and I like a few tracks but several are just not strong enough. I don't know if I have a distaste for the softer britpop songs or the singer's vocal style but I much preferred the faster songs with more rockin energy.

I thought it was alright, i didn’t stand out to me much. I liked the instrumentation but I can’t really see any real reason why I would made a list like this. It just wasn’t anything super special.

#586. Mid-tier indie rock 3/5: it's fine

It was okay.

Good... Never really great for me. Couldn't tell you why.

I really hated the first song. I kept thinking my headphones were going out on me. After that the album never really rose above fine.

Great find!

This band was decent. They had a good sound.

Decent not too bad or too good. It is right in the middle

Good enough for background listen, but I'm not sure if it's pushing anything forward nor whether it's a necessary listen. I like the cover art tho.

liked it more than i thought i would.

Fine. First four or so songs he sounds too much like the Beatles. Was better when he sang in the lower register. Pretty standard indie rock sound, but I’m new to britpop.

Favorite Track: Idiot Brother

show girl- 6 bailed out- 5 american guitars- 5 junk shop clothes- 5 dont trust the stars- 5 starstruck- those two songs back to back are funny. 5 how could i be wrong- 5 house breaker- 6 or 7 valet parking- 5 idiot brother- 4 early years- 5 home again- 5

Ok but never been great

Pretty good for British alt rock but still isn’t my favorite genre. 3.5/5

Not bad, not great.

It’s alright. There’sa level of wit and wetness to that lyrics which I like and the tunes are nice enough. Just a bit boring though, like a conversation with as nice acquaintance, you soon find yourself reaching for excuses to move on

Okay album. Nothing that stood out to me though

This sounds like the 90s version of T. Rex, modern glam rock. Glam rock voice, standard 90s alternative music. They sound like Death Cab for Cutie. This feels like a band that wanted to be Oasis very badly. This is Death Cab for Cutie's favorite band. Meh. This isn't terrible, but neither is it memorable, no real highlights or lowlights. The last song is like two songs.

The music is better than the vocals. 3.

It was fine. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5

HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE MEH
