Reviews (page 6 of 8)

Stort sett bare seige og kjedelige låter.

I enjoyed this much more than Gold which is one of the worst albums I’ve ever heard. This still isn’t good, but I like that To Be Young song or whatever it’s called.

the soundtrack to a movie I'd give a 2.5 stars on Letterboxd.

I really liked his subsequent album "Gold" - but this rather washed over me - a bit generic and a bit forgettable.

2nd one from him and a bit better

Ryan Adams is a pretty prolific artist. There's a lot of albums out there. There's a few Ryan Adams albums that I really love. "Love is Hell", "Rock N Roll", "Easy Tiger"... they're my jams. "1989" is a fun cover album. There's a bunch that I think are only alright... "Demolition", "Gold"... There's a bunch I think are pretty bad. I always found "Heartbreaker" to be pretty mid overall. "To Be Young" is a great track, but man, miss me with everything else.

Take my opinion with a grain of salt; I never actually listened to Ryan Adam’s until after his more notorious history came to light. But I don’t see this as much more than replacement-level indie rock. There are a couple of songs that I flagged, but this seemed forgettable.

This didn’t really sit with me at all - tracks kind of merge into one another, and I found myself checking how long was left. Not rotten, just not for me. Favourite track: Oh My Sweet Carolina

Everything about this album is derivative... even down to the title he stole from a Mariah Carey song. Songs are boring and sound like knock-off Bob Dylan. And he seems like a pretty bad guy!

Not my thing

It’s not great, no business on the list musically.

boring, boring, boring. don't understand the appeal, or why it's on list.

Good intentions, but too polished and not the right sounding voice. Derivative. 2.5 / 5

Relatively talented asshole. Both come across here.

Not my cup of tea. Folky, country rock. Some decent ballads on here. Again, cringe cover

2.3/5 This album has some solid songs and also some pretty average tunes. Overall not too bad a listen.

Enjoyed some of these songs, but sounds like this guy was a real piece of work. Had never heard of him until this.

Someone has listened to Bob Dylan.

Well, if you want to get on this list then sounding like a Bob Dylan album is a not a bad way to go about it since he himself has 7 on here! And it worked! And bloody Ryan Adams has 2 albums on here! I thought _Gold_ was ok, this is far to derivative to be deserving of this list or my attention. Sorry Ryan but you caught me on the wrong day for this!

Couldn't get into it

it was fine i saved one song

Not a fan of anything country related. not interested in any of it. This man is insufferable

A 2.5/5 rounded down because he talked about Morrisey.

After two listens yesterday I have already forgot this album ever existed. In my eyes it's completely unremarkable, with maybe one song at some point catching my attention, but can't remember which one and why. Sometimes sounds like Ed Sheeran with a harmonica. Which is not a compliment.

This one started out okay, and for a minute I thought it might actually go somewhere. Then it just slid straight into this proto Zach Bryan style country thing and never came back. It’s slow, mopey, and way too self serious. A lot of it sounds the same after a while, just different versions of the same sad acoustic song dragging on longer than it should. There’s some decent songwriting buried in here, but it’s not enough to save it. By the end I was ready for it to be over

Urgh, ffs. I’ve already listened to another of his albums on this list. I’d liken both albums to passing a busker on the street. Mostly shit and instantly forgettable. Why this guy has any albums on this list let alone two is beyond me.

Not my type of music

too much cowboy and sad ritmh

Gently flowing music where one track is interchangeable with the next

dob bylan

is Ryan Adams a proto-fuckboy? his music certainly suggests it. it’s country music so is inoffensive but not exactly revolutionary

Mondharmo gespot op nummer 7, buckle up Cowboys, this gon' be goooooood. FAVO: Amy

Great folk music has to have a narrative inside the album- leave you feeling something at the end. This didn’t really. It didn’t seem too cohesive as an album, and every track sounded pretty similar. Adams obviously wants to be Springsteen, but clearly isn’t.

It's a rainy Monday morning and I'm exhausted because I saw Lamb of God last night. This album is really not the vibe today.

A few tracks aside, this album is an absolute snooze fest. I’m also very suspicious that he’s even really smoking that cigarette on the cover, looks photoshopped to me.

so not only is ryan adams a twat but also writes pretty boring music

Ein wenig zu schnulzig.

A pretty uninspiring listen, from a pretty shit person

Dull and largely uninspiring modern country. It has a stripped-back, confessional vibe that should work, but too many songs blur together into a similar, downcast haze. Not the worst country album I’ve heard by any means — but it’s close!

Kind of boring, but I’m not much into country type tunes.

Stick your harmonica up your arse!

Listen, I have to admit that I like sad boy Ryan Adams' music. This isn't his only album that I've ever had on repeat in the past. But I in no way have to appreciate Ryan Adams' as a person and this is yet another album where I struggle to separate the music from the artist. I think I would give this album a 4, maybe a 5 if I felt generous, if it was from another artist. But it's not.

Liked this better than his later albums. 2.5 rounded down for his treatment of women — we love you, Mandy Moore…

i didn’t really get this one, it didn’t move me //was more like light shove // i expected to love it, landed just short // i decide to believe its earnest, but a bit calculated in its intimacy // just enough, not too artificial// leans toward that proto boom-clap-stomp sensibility before it even had a name, while blues and folk feel like last minute guests // writing has some strong moments, but overall record feels too narrow for me

Prefiero Gold. Este se me hace demasiado country. No es un mal disco. Shakedown on 9th Street es buena.

Come Pick Me Up

It's okay. I appreciate the stylization and songwriting, but it was kinda boring for me. Something between midwest emo and Bob Dylan.

I actually liked this album, which is a surprise for my taste, but- What was that? ... Ryan Adams is a terrible person? How so? ... Oh. Wow. Won't be listening to Ryan Adams again, but I have been trying to listen through every album on this list fully, so I did listen to it this once. Between this and Casanova by The Divine Comedy, I'm beginning to think the critcs making this list are openly misogynistic...

Super boring.

Didnt stand out to me. Fav song was damn sam

541/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

Not too shabby - but not something I would listen to again.

A quiet thoughtful album I'm glad I listened to! A few songs really grabbed me, and I really appreciated the singer-songwriter vibe, the instrumentation and the composition of the album. Then I read some reviews and realized this is that Ryan Adams. Ugh. I wish I'd just listened to something else. 6/10 music 0/10 dude

Mid 2000’s folk. It’s alright I guess

This is not my style of depressing music

Abysmal

Alternative country, roots rock. I liked the second track but was pretty bored with the rest. Probably shouldn't have listened while running.

20 minutes too long.

I'm not sure if I'll like this or not. Kind just ok. Fine.

Not my thing but it was still touching

A couple of the songs are ok, but most are not.

2 out of 5. Nothing really to say here, didn't strike any chords with me.

I never got into Ryan Adams music. Before I knew anything about this dude I mostly thought it was boring. The album title und cover scream „self indulgent douche“. Having now some surface level knowledge of Ryan Adams private live does not help. In this context every emotion in this collection of songs appears too performative, too calculated. Had to listen to „Motion Sickness“ by Phoebe Bridgers as some form of absolution afterwards.

Listening session: january 8th, while commuting to internship Listened to before: no Thoughts: nothing about this stood out to me to be honest Favourite track: Amy

Too slow for me again. I do like when they start an album with a talking segment but that was really the only part I liked. Not for me.

Worst harmonica playing, ever. Over and over.

a couple of high points - To Be Young, for sure - but a lot of dreary Americana

Ryan Adams is advertising his concert in my area. I will not be attending.

Skipped a bunch of slow songs, but I liked Shakedown on 9th Street.

I've heard better Ryan Adams, and I've also heard much worse Ryan Adams. This is mostly boring though.

He sounds nice enough but there is nothing interesting or novel about this album.

i honestly didnt hate it but it's also a ryan adams album so i do actually hate it

I thought I hated all country. Turns I just hate slow, sappy country. Unfortunately, the majority of the album is the latter, which is a shame considering the fact that “To Be Young” and “Shakedown on 9th Street” are both genuine jams.

It was okay - nothing to write home about

Not sure I've ever understand the point of Ryan Adams.

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: My Winding Wheel I dont have any opinions about this. It reminds me of some other singer songwriter album I heard about 100 albums back. Can't remember his name, but it was basically generic 2000s adult contemporary, like this.

That was a little boring.

All style no substance

By most accounts, Ryan Adams is a piece of shit. He picks petty fights with bands and is generally unpleasant to his peers in the industry. He's been abusive and manipulative to multiple romantic partners. He's used his stature in the music industry to stall their careers out of some weird insecurity. He's an addict that blames alcohol and drugs on his shitty behavior but can never seem to fully commit to sobriety. I mean the dude tried to keep Mandy Moore and Phoebe Bridgers from the world. That's heinous. I used to be a real fan of Ryan Adams. Listening to this album, I'm reminded why. However, it just does not hit the same. This is a case of not being able to separate the art from the artist. Specifically because Adams is the narrator and the main character to the music. Through his songs, he paints himself as a tortured artist and a vulnerable, down-on-his-luck lover. But we know the truth and now he just seems like a liar. He's been writing these beautiful songs about being troubled and misunderstood and a victim of love. In reality, he's been the monster. So yeah, his music kind of sucks now.

I actually forgot I listened to it- I put it on when I got to work, listened to the whole thing, yada-yada-yada, I come back from lunch and log into my account to find out what my album of the day was, having completely forgotten about that morning’s listening.

I know the name Ryan Adams but have never knowingly heard anything by him before now. It does make me wonder why albums like this become so popular. There has been so far, and I’m halfway through my first listen, nothing groundbreaking, new or interesting to make him a superstar. I guess that might be a reason in its own right if people feel comfortable with a middle of the road album that feels familiar and safe. For me, I find this very mediocre and dull. It is well produced though. Let’s see how the second half of the album grabs me. I think one listen is more than enough of this. Very much doubt I’ll be listening to anything else by Ryan Adams again. Nothing new to find here.

Didn’t catch my ear

eh, all sounds the same to me

i have a headache. if i hear a harmonica one more time i'll be on the news.

Yawn.... Omg so boring.

Nah, this isn’t it. Generic and forgettable. 2/10

Não tá na minha vibe

Interesting

Interesting sort of twangy rock music. I've never heard this before and it's not bad, kind of a country rock fusion in my opinion. Nothing really stood out about it, just kind of background music to me. Would probably be nice to listen to on a camp out or something like that.

Not as bad as the other Ryan Adams album I had on this list but still kind of meh. All of this had been done before and been done much better. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing

nothing on here is particularly impressive but its better than his other album on the list. at the very least there are one or two songs that i didnt hate.

Not my taste. ★★

Seems cozy and familiar, but pretty forgettable.

Gear: 64 Audio Duo Artwork: 🚬😑⬇️ Production: 🎧👂🧈 Music: 🌊🎸🤠 Ratinng: 💔💔(💔)/5

Not for me. I like some Ryan Adams stuff but this was a bit too slow and country

Another real duffle struggle to get through. So fucking dull 😑. I'll give it a two cause he hasn't a bad voice and the music is alright but the lyrics and vibe are so fucking dull

5/10 - better than his Gold album but isn't special enough to get over the artist's shortcomings as a person

Boring

I just always assumed I didn't like Ryan Adams' music. I still don't really, but it's better than I thought. In particular, when he does a Bob Dylan impression. It's not as good as Madvillainy.

Listen, I was a 27 year old white dude once. My favorite movie around that age was High Fidelity. That was 13 years ago when I also liked this album, but I also didn't know how much of an actual POS this dude is. If you can separate the art from the artist, that's great for you! Part of me wishes I could, but I can't and don't enjoy this anymore given the subtext.

First time hearing any Ryan Adams to my knowledge, and I can understand why people were hyping this up 25 years ago...some choice cuts on here of the Alt Country variety, some more sensitive 'Dylan in a toxic relationship'-type stuff. Minus a star for him being a dirtbag

Folk. Was okay.

I had never heard anything about this artist so I looked up reviews before listening. This was a mistake as I think his reprehensible behaviour may have clouded my judgement. Music was ok, songs nothing to write home about. Probably a 2.5 but I need to to make it a whole number Promise not to look up reviews before scoring from now on

Not for me

Pretty much the slow twangy cry for me country sound I don't really enjoy much. Now if he just covered Bryan Adams songs, especially Summer of 69 (get it Luke?), I would have enjoyed a lot more. I did enjoy the 2 honkytonk sounding tunes in To Be Young and Shakedown on 9th Street. Probably my 2 favorite of the album. There was one surprise for me, I did enjoy Come Pick Me Up. Something about that sound and lyrics really stood out to me. Sound like this dude was chasing a real POS. 3 pretty good tunes, too much twang and overuse of the harmonica at times leaves with with a right down the middle 2.5. I'll round down because the dude is a clown. 2.5

Pretty boring - Dylan with a banjo

Doesn't sound bad, but certainly not interesting. Plus seeing this guy is terrible

Similar to the Gold album by this guy I didn't think this was anything special, maybe a bit better. Apparently Ryan Adams is not that great of a person according to many of the reviews here, I don't know about all that but the guy sure does make some mediocre music.

I can't quite explain it, but this album sounds like it was written by an asshole, and not in the good way.

I wanted the Canadian guy with a B

Good sound and storytelling. I like the guitar. Dylan-esque

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Adams#Harassment_allegations

The bluegrass aspects and backing voices were nice.

Too country. This didn't work for me.

Pretty dogshit with a couple good tracks

I’ll start with this: I know about his misdemeanor, and I don’t know much else about Ryan Adams. I’ve never watched an interview, never been to a show. But his apology for sexual misconduct and the accusations against him are enough to make one thing clear—he’s not a good guy. So, fuck you, Ryan Adams. Now, about the album itself: it’s a surprisingly relaxing listen. Tracks like Amy and Bartering Lines stand out with their calm, soothing feel and beautifully understated instrumentals. Stripped of context, I’d probably give this a decent 3 stars. But I can’t separate the music from the man entirely + Sweet Lil' gal (23rd/1st) was the worst closing track I have heard in a long time. 6/10.

Wannabe country-star Bob Dylan. Side story: Back in the oughts, for my environmentally conscious girlfriend, I made a mix CD themed to recycling and put Adams' track "Come Pick Me Up" on it, that was definitely the highlight pick of the collection.

I don't love alt country anyway, but this seemed super average to me. also starting out your CD with studio banter about Morrissey solo records is a weird move. Let hiphop keep the dumb tradition of interstitial skits between tracks, no one else needs to do this.

I thought it might be good at first and then it got real boring real quick

I'm abusing my unemployment for this???

It's a bit too Americana for my taste and Ryan Adams is too much of an asshole who preyed on young female artists. "To Be Young" was the only song that really stood out to me and I'm tempted to award a point for Gillian Welch's contribution. Overall though, it's not for me.

Previously rated: Gold (3/5) ********************* Edit: I didn't remember listening to his other album. I feel like I was a victim of bait and switch with this one. The first couple of tracks were promising even though it's country, then the wheels fall off and it becomes minimalist and boring as shit.

I have tried to get into Ryan Adams including attending a 3 hr secret gig. I listened to the whole album but it still doesn’t do it for me. I find his music and voice very generic and boring.

BOOOORRINNNNG

Two pretty lively songs, but the rest are snoozers. This is country folk.

Roooompiiiiiiche

Maybe it was just a bad pace for my mood at the time, but it was too slow for my liking. Zoned out a lot. 1 - would not listen to again 2 - if some one played it, I'd probably just zone it out 3 - didn't hate it, didn't love it 4 - saved some songs from the album 5 - would buy the album or already own it

I like this - I probably would have loved it at the time it was released.

Gave it a 3 the first time around. I like someone of the harmonies but since Ryan Adams sucks dropping it down to a 2 this time around.

Were it not for the single "To Be Young" id probably rate this a 1 on principle, but that song is amazing.

One of the very first CDs I was gifted was a Ryan Adams CD, or maybe it was a Bryan Adams CD? Anyway, I returned the fuck out of that shit and exchanged it for a Creed CD.

Personally just not a fan of the country sound. Subtract an extra star due to the artist' controversies Tracks to Track: Oh My Sweet Carolina

Nothing memorable at all. With a name like that , I’d have released a song called Summer of 68 etc , etc.

The first song had a hint of promise, the one where he tried to sound like Dylan, but after that it was a bit pants.

His voice is good, but the songs are so dull 💤

Well that’s it, this album conclusively proves (from a sample of 2) that all songs called Sweet Carolina/Caroline can do one. Oh and the rest of the album is kind of OK, in an inoffensive background noise kind of way, but just seems to lack any originality to deem worthiness for this list. Bob Dylan he ain’t.

This is OK, but kind of hollow. Favorite track: "Bartering Lines"

Generally it is boring Alt-Country. "Amy" was only the track I truly enjoyed. The rest doesn't add anything new, just a rehash of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and most annoying the emulation of the worst qualities of Bob Dylan with a wailing harmonica. The only positive thing out of those songs is that I will admit that Ryan Adams is a slightly better singer than Bob Dylan, but honestly that is not saying much. I wish he was bringing something unique and not just rehashing the influences of the past.

Bob Dylan but if he was would more intelligible and a massive asshole. It’s alright to me, I like the end. (5/10, 2/5)

Music wasn’t terrible but -1 for apparently being a sex pest.

This album was not good. I heard his other record on the list and it bored the hell out of me apart from the opener and this one was no different, incredibly derivative, basically not good.

Started off as something I thought I woudlnt like, for a very brief surprising moment I liked it, and then it was too whiney for me again. Glad I dont like it because the dude turn out to be… lets say not a great person

Ryan Adams has released a bunch of albums, all of which are pretty standard folk rock singer-songwriter stuff with some Americana/Country touches. Definitely not my thing. Also, looking at this artwork, it kinda looks like the cigarette is standing upright in the background rather than in Ryan's mouth. Trippy. Key tracks: Amy

I know who Ryan Adams is, but not very familiar with his music. Dylan-esque country/folk rock vibe tilting more towards country. Not music I would normally listen to on purpose. Nothing really stood out or clicked for me. It's not bad, but not great either. Just...meh. -1 because Adams is just a terrible human being. I’d take 2 off, but then I’d have to look at his face in my lowest rated albums everyday.

Not my thing a few good songs but pretty forgettable

2.5/5 The parts I like remind me of Wilco or even the Beatles, plenty of Dylan in here too, but it's just too rooted in country music to really appeal to me. It is a little hemmed in by pop music principles but has enough heart to seem genuine and not just written to move units. Fairly nice guitar work to accompany the vocals.

Meh. Certainly not the worst I've heard but just boring to listen to. No idea why this is considered for this list.

Besonders hervorzuheben sind die Songs "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High)", "Oh My Sweet Carolina" (ein Duett mit Emmylou Harris) und "Come Pick Me Up".

I was more of a Whiskeytown guy, but this is an ok record. Back then, it was a 3. First time hearing it in 20 years, it's closer to a 2. Mid. Listenable, not that exciting. By most accounts Ryan Adams is a terrible dude, so there's that. Kinda fitting that it opens with an argument about Morrissey who also turned out to be a terrible dude.

Some of this quite nice but good lord the harmonica. And by most accounts here he's a nob so I guess that's that.

As with his other album I reviewed, it started off very easy going and breezy, but after a short while it seemed to slow waaay down, and I just found it so dull.

Not my cup of tea so not off to a great start, and it was a bit of a dreary trudge through this album. For some reason bore quite a dislike to Ryan, maybe it's the missing B in his name.

Meh. I like his later work but this was a little too raw for my taste.

not great

A few good singles does not an album make

Honestly, this didn't do much for me at all, just background noise that wasn't awful, but certainly was nowhere close to pleasant. Two stars seems plenty.

"God just SHUT UP" I said this a few dozen times. Adams' voice is just grating enough that I cant appreciate the music. To Be Young was good, the rest is a bit of a downward slope. There are some nuggets here and there, some nice folk guitar, but overall its just self-suckery.

Ryan Adams is a pretender to the Bob Dylan throne! Opening with a discussion on King Dick Morrissey is sure a choice but the first song is pretty good! I dunno man but I doubt we needed more than one Ryan Adams album and so far zero Bryan Adams albums

Zzzzzzzzzz 1.9

Notwithstanding the person, this isn't to me as strong an album as others he's released. Mid 2s for me.

was an easy listen but I don't think I will come back to it

Couldn't really get into this one.

Didn't I already listen to a Ryan Adams album? So that means there's two of them on here? Nothing else I should listen to before I die except a second Ryan Adams album? Sheesh.

Only middling, certainly too long and slow at the end. Also hard to come to this fresh and find everything about it distasteful. Oh well, don't be horrible to people if you want them to be unbiased.

theres like 2-3 good songs here

In my college days in the late aughts, everything by Ryan Adams was gold to me. Now that I know what a piece of trash he is, it’s hard to want to listen to it again.

Overall I found it to be a little low-effort, I like lots of his stuff but this was a bit mixed song-quality-wise.

Not enough art to separate it from the artist. Boring.

Don't try to recreate the album cover. Almost choked on my Popeye candy stick

Very dull alternative country that I don’t see myself wanting to listen to again. Not my cup of tea whatsoever. Knowing this site more people were probably upset by the intro referencing Morrissey than the knowledge of this guy being a rapist

Yawn. Idc.

I like Ryan's cover of Wonderwall and this record hasn't really convinced me he's any better than that. It was much more mellow than I expected and all very samey? Also on the basis he was cancelled (not sure if he still is) I don't feel too bad about rating this low

Not very memorable. Songs were okay, but nothing dynamic. 2/5 Won’t listen again

This album starts on a really high note, then drops off and plateaus for a while. Lots of slow, melancholy music that just barely holds my interest. It’s really well done for the most part, the production is there. But again with the harmonica? yeesh…

Dreary stuff this.

meh, not bad, just kind of background and boring

Album opens with probably it's best song (not including the opening enterlude?), and then proceeds to not do anything particularly varied or exciting past then. I don't think a lot of these songs are anywhere near terrible, but I'm giving the album a 2 cause the guys an arsehole.

I don't like country and this album did not convince me otherwise. What a drag.

Maybe it’s because I’m super tired today but nothing about this stuck out in particular to me. Decent enough to listen to maybe should listen to one more time on a more awake day and see if I like it more.

Boring, a clinical Nashville made album

Come Pick Me Up.

Why the fuck is this in the list? Beige. Bland. Lame. Repetitive. Samey. Embarrassingly clichéd lyrics. Such a fucking borrrreeeeeeee It's a no from me

I didn't hate it but it did drag on a little. also, he sounds like a bit of a dick so I'm glad both of his albums are out of the way.

Really didn't like this. It was too slow and whiny for me. Best song was Shakedown on 9th Street but it sounds like it's from a totally different album.

The songs here are an easy listen and aren't too long where you're waiting for the end. I don't really have any complaints, despite not expecting to want to revisit this one. The verdict: - This album is good (3 stars) - Ryan Adams is not (-1 star)

No thanks

This was pretty average to bad. It’s modern country music disguised as rock in some bits. “Amy” was the highlight. I guess he’s also a piece of shit? Forgettable.

As far as country albums go this isn't bad. It's a quick listen, the guy's voice is interesting, and the music is fine enough. Does this deserve to be in the list of best/most important/whatever the criterion of this list is? I would say no. I'd still instinctively switch radio stations if it were playing.

Skaplig singer songwriter/country/poprock typ.

first song was ok, the rest is just bad dylan wannabe bs

Another one that'll fall into the abyss of "objectively fine, but just not for me". The country twang and harmonicas over soulful songs will definitely be someone's jam, but it sure ain't mine.

A bit anonymous

way more misses than hits. also, dude is an asshole.

Boring

Thought the music was okay - but then I did some research on him and don't like him

Irrespective of whatever bad things he did, this is pretty bloodless 2000s Americana, no bueno. I'd much rather listen to Summer of '69.

Really liked the follow up album "Gold" - but this rather washed over me - a bit generic and a bit forgettable.

Boring

2 stars - Now if he was actually related to Bryan Adams instead of just sharing his birthday with him, it would have been 3 stars. :)

Af hverju er þetta hér? Ekki beint vont í eyrun, en heilt yfir afleitt (derivative sum sé), ósannfærandi og óeftirminnilegt.

dude am i on my Evil Horny Boy streak or what. getting these two after alanis morissette is starting to make me think she has a point ab men! i literally first heard about ryan adams hearing ab his abuses back in the metoo wave , a memory that only sticks with me upon finding out that its Not in fact the summer of 69 guy. its a little difficult than to form a meaningful relationship with his music after the fact, but its made all the worse by the fact that his artistic persona is Sensitive and Sad and Regretful For What Could Have Been etc etc...just goes down bad with not just the knowledge that he's a douche but the Specific knowledge that he'd attempt to sabotage ppl who rejected him lol. the actual music seems okay...this is not my genre of expertise so im pretty unconfident in my ability to judge it as especially remarkable but theres absolutely at least a few beautiful melodies on here...come pick me up in particular stopped me in my tracks after almost losing consciousness in the sleepy cozy vibes (helped by great production). i kinda wanna be more generous to it based on those moments but i cant deny how huge a piece of the puzzle i feel like im missing not being able to buy into most of the lyrics...i could imagine myself getting emotionally lost in this , but in This universe i cant get much closer than a fairly vast distance

This was far too country for my tastes. Rating: 2

I think I rate Ryan Adams less as a result of what the generator has shown me; I came in having enjoyed his 2017 album 'Prisoner' a fair bit, but this album and Gold are less to my tastes. There are a few moments where he doesn't even try to hide how much he wants to sound like Bob Dylan... but more often he sounds less like one particular artist and more like all mid-tempo Americana ever. It's just a bit cliched musically - I don't hear any individuality coming through. There are some nice moments, sure, but it's mostly pretty bland stuff.

Seems fine, just went by and nothing stood out for me. Will I listen to again: 0%

More fucking harmonica!!

ok, but nothing to get excited about. The harmonicas filled me with rage.

As far as country-flavored music goes, this wasn't too bad. 2.4 stars.

The album starts pretty well. It still looks like a low-cost Bob Dylan, but it's pretty good. The following songs become more and more blame, and the album's end is almost anti-climax. Maybe I'll give it another chance on another day, but for now, I can only rate it with 2.5 stars.

Low impact cardio music.

Not for me.

Not for me.

I like a few tunes on here and Adams has made a few that I like a lot more than anything on this album - but a lot of this was just putin' me to sleep.

Pretty decent

Why is this list full of cliche mid music?

don't care for this genre, skimmed thru it; no rating

zur ruhig, zu "country"

I did like this one more than his other album on the list but that’s a low bar. Rating: 2.1

i like this a lot less than i like other circa-2000 indie alt-country.

i've heard to be young before and i gotta say i thought it was from the 70s. it's pretty good. the rest of it sounds like it's from 2000 but is trying to be from the 70s and was pretty bad.

Not a fan! I didn't like his voice, and the songs all kind of felt the same. I don't enjoy the faux vulnerability of this genre of country rock.

slotting this beside norah jones in the "dull but inoffensive" rankings. 1.5

Look I tried. This album is just so sad. I'm usually a big fan of the harmonica but after the third song in a row started with a depressing harmonica melody I actually wanted to kill myself. Maybe I was just already in a bad mood but Jesus Christ this album made it ten times worse.

There’s some pleasant tunes but nothing that rises to great for me. But more egregiously it overstays its welcome with a runtime that’s far too long. 2/5

Fella is clearly a little mixed up. I wanted to share in his heartbreak, but he didn't half make it bloody hard work. The harmonica got on my tits. Just talk to her, mate.

The ads on youtube sounded better than some of the tracks. I made it all the way through, but it was insepid to the extreme. Like eating a bowl of dry special k cereal.

Quite liked the acoustic guitar to begin with, Ryan Adams has a decent voice, thought I wouldn't mind this. As it went on the cool American persona got ever more annoying until I felt like I was trapped in a party and Ryan had got out his guitar and wouldn't stop trying to show off. Put iTunes back on Ryan, she's not interested! We all know you're not some some of wandering troubadour, you definitely have a massive mansion. So musically its not that bad but the content and themes are irritating.

Set out to make a listenable record. I didn't read too closely into the lyrics, but they felt mild. Music is absolutely alright. Utterly fine, which is not praise.

I was fully expecting to hate this, however it was not what I was expecting and I have subsequently realised that Ryan Adams and Bryan Adams are not the same person! However, unfortunately Ryan seems less than a good egg judging by some of the public reviews.... Art from artist and all that though. I quite enjoyed about half of this. Mostly the less country sounding ones. Really easy to listen to in the background. Not sure I'll be rushing back but I have learnt something today 2.5 but 2 for the bad stuff

Not this asshat again. Last one got a 2 from me, based on no knowledge of what the fellow gets up to in his spare time. Will this one beat it especially now that I've been armed with that knowledge? I tried by was done by the end of "Amy". Yup, nope.

This album would be nice background music at a hipster coffee bar.

He sounds like a bad Dylan imitator and assaults women… otherwise it had its good moments.

Not for me

This was a difficult one to review. I listened to Glory a few times back in the day (pre allegations), and it didn't do much for me then either, do I don't feel too bad about this one. There's a few good songs on here, and the backing band are really solid, but honestly a lot of the songs in the second half are quite dull. I believe in separation of art and artist in theory, for example I'm completely fine with listening to Michael Jackson's early albums. But it's difficult when the art in question is meant to make you sympathise with the artist. This is an album mainly concerned with Ryan Adams' own heartbreak, and I find it hard to feel sorry for him, now that we all know how horrible a person he is.

This dude got another album on here? Such a POS he is.

Well we started in a bar room shooting pool and smoking cigarettes, and we ended on the barstool crying into a glass of whiskey. Turns out the guys a scumbag so I award zero points (1 is the minimum). That being said I still enjoy music from other scumbags so that makes me a hypocrite. Sue me.

I hadn't heard Ryan Adam's before listening to this. At first I liked the music and songs but as it went on I got bored. The lyrics didn't hold up for me. Then after learning more about Ryan Adams it brings up the conundrum of can you listen to someone's music and disregard the person.

This album has moments. The upbeat tunes are fun although the whole album suffers from lyrics which are, at best, mediocre and often disposable. "To be young is to be sad, is to be be high" ?? But overall the album grinds to a halt for many songs in a row. I found it impossible to keep my attention on them. 2.4

At the beginning I thought, oh, maybe this one's better than "Gold", to which I listened to just 2 days before, but I was wrong.

A bit meh. After listening to Gold, did we really need another Ryan Adams album.

Ryan shadums what is this arse!

Meh. If I want to listen to Van Morrison, I'll go listen to Van Morrison. Look everyone knows the guys is a horrendous cunt, so let's leave that to one side. The music is well played etc. The one with Emmylou Harris is alright. The album is probably better than Gold, the banality of which made me actually angry. This one doesn't provoke a similarly visceral response, I tuned out more or less completely around halfway through and ultimately this gets a more banal score as a result.

The answer to “we have Dylan and Springsteen at home.” Occasionally interesting, mostly derivative.

Correct

Not my cup of tea except first one

Way too sleepy and way too much harmonica.

Album os pretty mid. Never heard of Ryan Adams and will not be returning. 2/5

To think that people made sure they made a distinction between this guy and Bryan Adams. Both I suppose should be on such a list. A lot of people like them and they sold exceptionally well. And god bless both of them. I don’t like either man’s music much. But I’m clearly in the minority.

Well, Ryan Adams, eh? yet another example of the age-old conundrum: can we enjoy the Art regardless of the behavior of the Artist? Judy Mills, owner of Mills Record Company record store in Kansas City, was quoted in a article in Pitchfork (https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/what-does-a-canceled-ryan-adams-album-mean-for-record-stores/): “As I was a pulling a Ryan Adams box set off the floor, I also pulled his artist card from the racks, and I thought to myself: What do I do with the other artists out here, filling my sales floor, who are alleged to be sexual molesters, offenders, rapists, misogynists, and plain ol’ assholes? It’s easy to stop stocking those artists going forward, but what about now that I own them?” With Adams and R. Kelly in the news, Mills says it’s easy to choose not to stock them, new or used. “But then John Lennon, Jimmy Page, and Phil Spector, because they’re not in the news, it’s OK to carry them?” she wonders. “Not gonna stock the Beatles? Led Zep?” Very complicated. And for me, it comes down to ick factor. Does what I know create a feeling of ickiness in me that prevents me from listening to the music? And sorry, Mr Adams, you have crossed that line. Your Mr Sensitive Artist persona feels like wolf-in-sheep's-clothing camouflage that you use to manipulate and exploit young women. And that has a deleterious effect on the music industry, discouraging women from creating art that we might all enjoy, and society as a whole by discouraging women from, you know, enjoying their daily lives. It's just shitty behavior, dude, and you don't really seem that aware or apologetic. But what, I hear you ask, is the album actually like? Well, it's pretty solid. He's got a great voice and a crack band (notably featuring David Rawlings and Gillian Welch), and he can craft a pretty great country tune. It was a very pleasant surprise to hear Emmylou Harris turn up of 'Oh My Sweet Carolina". She always makes everything better, but it did make me wonder why I was listening to this instead of one of her records (or even a Gram Parsons LP). My favourite song is 'Bartering Lines'. But I think I'm going to have to rate this one pretty low, based on 1) Ryan Adams seems like an arsehole, and 2) there are plenty of other examples of this type of thing that I can happily listen to instead (for example, let's listen to Phoebe Bridgers record, that would be cool!). "Oh no!" I hear you say "Cancel culture run amok!" Well, settle down, there buddy, or as Ryan himself would say "Easy, tiger". The accusations against Ryan delayed the release of a record or two, but have you seen how many albums he has released since then? At least six, or more depending on what you count. And the first show back on his apology tour was a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall. He is living proof that a Me Too scandal may tap the brakes for a little bit, but, barring incarceration, it's hardly career threatening. I just can't listen to this record without my mind being flooded with distracting thoughts of Ryan Adams manipulating and exploiting women. Which kind of kills the vibe, you know? He's not Marilyn Manson level evil, but still pretty creepy, so he gets two stars at best.

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

I like some Ryan Adams, but not this album

talented dude but def not my type of music

Never heard of this artist. The album was meh, okay background music for work. Reading the wiki about the artist, okay, that explains a lot.

Ok so I know this guy turned it to be a douche. But I also remember SO MUCH HYPE about him when he first came in the scene. Somehow I never took the time to check out any of his stuff. Dude this is BORING. It must have been a slow year for music in 2000 if this debut got so much praise. Also, his vocal style is pretentious AF. These lyrics aren’t as deep as he seems to want them to be. I was looking for originality and did not find it.

My review of the previous Ryan Adams album we got still holds here ("Tuneful and easy to listen to, but completely unmemorable"); at least this one is a more reasonable length.

Don't really remember the album...

There are charming moments here but Adams rather trashed his work with his behaviour and its hard not to muse on the disconnect between the image of the lovelorn troubadour he portrays here and the misogynist sex pest he is. Let's hope his apology was sincere and his efforts to overcome his demons succeed.

vokalisti tämän ratkaisi ja voivoivoivoi....... helvetin lieskat liehuvat ottakaa..... kuulostaa NIIN paskalta.. ja huonolla tavalla... Get over yourselves Wokesters. No crime was committed. It’s life. It’s complicated. (heh...reference to sexual.. kriips kriips käsiliike... olen psykio paattinen) musiikki joskus hyvää.. harmonikka soi.. yrittää olla robert dylan, eipä oikeen onnistunut.Super fedt album. VELJENPOJAT.. TUPU HUPU LUPU ASS MF... dogwater .. rokkabilli rokista saa kaks tähteä. olen kirjoittanut tänään 3500+ sanaa pitääkö tähänkin vielä onko ihan pakko tähänkin pistää se sata ei kukaan näitä lue... vai lukeeko.. lähetäppä screenshottia... to be yoyng

i cant believe this dude is on here twice. what the heck am i missing. like bad bob dylan.

Clearly very talented, but the ballads are overwrought and the Bob Dylan homage is waaaay too thick.

This dude is so cringe. How did it take so long for everyone to realize he was a predator? It's written all over this debut album. Almost every song is some narcissistic, woe is me whine-fest about a dude who hates himself and knows what a piece of crap he is but refuses to do anything about it. And then he asks why women always leave him... Of course this guy is a Morrisey fan. The music is also boring as hell. There are so many better examples of Americana/folk-rock artists from this time period — Andrew Bird, Josh Ritter, and Peter Bradley Adams to name just a few examples. 2/5 — not utterly unlistenable but close

It was alright. It was too country and not rock enough.

The second track is decent rockabilly but too over produced for me, but the rest is pretty bland

Cunt thinks he’s Bob Dylan

did not enjoy

This album started off pretty strong, but lost steam quickly. The inclusion of speaking lines before songs start comes across as faux-sincerity. Felt like a deliberate move by a producer to make this music feel more genuine. All that being said, it's nice, gentle music. If that's your thing, go nuts. I have a hard time with these hour long lullaby albums.

a bit better than the previous one, still pretty unremarkable

A snooze fest, but a least a competent one.

Weinerlicher Alternative Country.

The only thing I know about this guy is that he's not Bryan Adams, he covered 1989 and I think he's since been cancelled? I don't know. Let's find out together. Hmm the album was mostly boring, a couple of fun points but then I deducted a star for him being trash. Sorry my countdown my rules!

Few good tunes, I much prefer Gold.

Not a big fan of this earlier work, but then again: not a fan of his recent behaviour either. Let's see how his redemption shot works out.

A few years ago, my mum was very excited because she’d got tickets to see the guitarist from queen perform locally. Imagine her shock and dismay (and my amusement) when he opened the show with Summer Of 69! 2 stars

I’ve never listened intentionally to anything of Ryan Adams. I was aware of him but whenever I heardhis name I always thought of Robin Hood which apparently and quite rightly pisses this Adams off. So I was quite open to listening to this album to see if I was missing something. I found it on the whole a pleasant way to while away a Saturday morning. A couple of tracks I really liked - Winding Wheel and Amy but nothing else stood out for me. Cannot say that I’m a lover at all of Country Rock or Bluegrass but as a change and as an attempt to widen my musical appreciation it was OK. Prior to listening I had a sneak look at other reviews. It appears that in the USA Adams is a bit of a hate figure due to his admitted harassment allegations. Something I was totally unaware of but also something that bothers me. As I am never going to purchase his music and probably never again listen intentionally to his albums it made no difference to my overall impression of this album.

I’m not that familiar with Ryan Adams music, just that he covered wonderwall and is a massive dickhead. So didn’t go into this with high expectations, music alone I was pleasantly surprised. Enjoyable album, but would I recommend folk listen to it before they die? Doubt it.
