Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Mostly quite bland to be honest. Definitely not offensive or difficult to listen to but just not too much to remember from it. 4/10

p250. 1971. 2.5 stars. 70s country tinged Dylan wannabee, but without the standout tunes. It's perfectly acceptable, and he has a better voice than Dylan, but it's mostly typical early 70s bland singer/songwriter meandering.

Not my thing

Liked the first couple songs, dried up though towards the end.

Pleasant, but not very interesting to listen to. Like a poor man’s Jim Croce or James Taylor. It’s a no from me Dawg. Lot of stuff like this from this era that is sooo much better.

Not exactly terrible, but not memorable either. Another boiled celery album.

Didn't really enjoy this. Pretty good. Might listen again one day, but not eager.

folksy 60s ballads - not my wheelhouse

Ihan kuunneltava, mutta ei herättänyt sen suurempia tunteita.

Forgettable.

Terribly dull

Bargan basement Bob Dylan is the first thing that came to mind.

Ok. Slow and a little lifeless.

It was enjoyable enough, but there are better albums in this style out there that I'd rather be listening to. No songs stood out.

Bob Dylan and Tom Petty had a sad baby

Largely dull and forgettable

For some reason, this album reminded me of the Billy Jack films of the seventies. White Light isn't awful, it's just dull and unadventurous. Clearly Gene Clark could compose; he just never explored anything but soft folky tunes. Didn't add.

A Gene Clark album immediately following an album by The Byrds? And not just any album by The Byrds, literally the album they released after Gene Clark left them? Coincidence or collusion? Ooo it makes me wonder. Oh great, this is also a massive commercial and critical failure that made no ripples across the pond in North America... yeah this will be fun. Side rant: how is this my second Gene Clark album and I still haven't gotten any Led Zeppelin? I thought this list was going to be non-stop banging rad music. Wtf. Back to Gene now. Boring, boring boring. It bores in the morning. It bores in the evening. It bores me at suppertime.

Понравилась Because of You.

I'd never heard of Gene Clark a few months ago and now I've heard two of his albums. I preferred 'No Other' to this one - it's pleasant enough and soothing to listen to after a long day, but largely unremarkable. Can't really see why it's list-worthy. 2.5

Not bad, but also not interesting in any way. Bland. 2

I liked his voice but this album was way too much of the same. Favorite Tracks: For a Spanish Guitar, White Light, In Winter

country

An album best described as meh not a bad album but none of the songs make me want to listen to them again

A bit too country for me.

only listened to a bit. Nice enough

2/5 nothing much

Monotonous country folk rock album... There are some good tracks, but I didn't see anything special/so inovative in this record. I also thought the album is too long, with 51min. Almost lost interest before the end of it.

This could be any one of a million mediocre white dudes with an acoustic.

I did not enjoy this, it was almost a chore to listen to, not what I look for in music

It was fine! A little boring but nothing struck me as bad

More Byrds related stuff. Kind of sounds like a knock off Dylan.

Just not doing much for me. Gave it two tries, and lowered my rating from 3 to 2 on second listen.

This is like discount Dylan. Doesn’t do much for me.

It was inoffensive but nothing special

Vaya rollazo. ¿Cómo puede ser que convierta la canción Stand By Me en un rollazo? No tiene perdón de Dios. No le pongo un 1 porque estamos en periodo navideño y mi propósito de hoy es decir cosas bonitas. La voz es bonita.

Country nope

Folky country rock album by Gene Clark of the Byrds. At first I was like oh boy, this much be inspired by Sweetheart of the Radio which is pinnacle of country rock. But no, he left after the first 3 albums. He wrote a ton of the early Byrds songs... Although I don't think any of them matter besides "Eight Miles High." And yeah, this album was underwhelming from start to finish. For a songwriter album, the lyrics were awful. They often don't really go anywhere and use the same techniques over and over. It just gets repetitive and tiresome. The best lyrics are from the only song (besides Stand by Me) not written by Clark... Bob Dylan lol. Speaking of Dylan, Clark tries to hard to sound and write like him, without having an idea how those songwriting techniques or harmonica are supposed to work. And what do you get when you have a songwriter album without good songwriting? You get whatever's left of the music and his vocals. His vocals sound ok, and appropriately reacts to the subject matter. I think the lyrics drag him back. Except on Stand By Me, it sounded like your average guy trying to sing the song... They try but they don't put any appropriate emotion into it. Overall, the melody is dull and uninspired. There's a thing or two to like from each song, but with basic chords and instrumentation, there's little to look forward to with each song. This isn't a bad album. Every track has flaws which prevent me from calling any of them "good." And if you're not good but still pleasant to listen to, you're ok. It's an album without much substance, creativity, or influence to warrant its place on this list.

A bit on the slow side for me.

It was so boring for me. All sings are same, it seems to me. The virgin and In winter are the Best from all another

A resounding "meh" from me. It gets better when it brings in a full band, but I still can't shake the Dylan comparison. Fine enough, just nothing Earth-shattering. Favorite track: "With Tomorrow"

It's alright. Relaxing guitar/ harmonica work. Faintly resembles Bob Dylan's work. However leaves alot to be desired. As a lack of chorus in these makes these tunes forgettable sadly. The lyrics are well written and it's ashame that they go half remembered.

Meh, it sounded like every song was the same. No minor keys either

Very low-key 70's AM / dentist office waiting room vibe. I'm pretty sure my mom used to listen to this. As I listen to this, I think "...wow, I should listen to stuff like this a little more often and expand my horizons" and then halfway through I think 'damn, this shit is boring..."

"White Light" did nothing for me. It's not offensive or objectionable, but it is boring. Apparently Gene Clark was in the Byrds. Whatever.

I really don’t understand why this is something I need to hear. Like Caetano Veloso yesterday, the sound is pleasant enough. The main difference is that I know English. Also, I don’t get very much emotion from these songs. I would still rather listen to something else. Bonus: AppleMusic has an extended version with Stand by Me, which I usually enjoy. This cover I do not like.

Nothing remarkable.

Ok album, laid back, decent for background music. A bit too on the country side for me to listen to again, I would say.

Top 3 1. (9) 1975 2. (4) Because Of You 3. (6) For a Spanish Guitar

Most sons sound alike. Easy listening and better than I expected but don't think I'll revisit this one.

bob dylan similar

Not a fan really

It's not so bad, I just don't like country.

Really liked the production on this one, but something about sounded so archaic to me that I couldn't get into it. Almost like it was a parody of this kind of music.

At times put me in mind of a really shit Bob Dylan cover band. Not actually that averse to this and it was pleasant enough to listen to but I’d say this is the sort of folk that gives folk a bad name. I’d have given it 3 if it weren’t for the unforgivable stand by me cover.

Harmonica got to me a bit, in a bad way. Great album to retire to.

Pas fan de ce genre de musique country, un peu ringarde et pas particulièrement palpitante.

I found this album pretty pleasant and inoffensive. There may be questions as to whether that is enough to qualify it for a list such as x amount of albums you must listen to before you die. I certainly could have died blissfully ignorant of this album’s existence and I don’t think my life would have been materially impacted. But still. It was too pleasant for me to be too angry with it.

Might have to be a tomorrow listen for me, I'll do double shift

Boring country

Some ok bits but largely boring folky singing

Cheesey country, not for me

Wish I could rate 2.5 stars. It wasn't bad it was just generic. Nothing plenty of people weren't already doing well before him. Definitely a talented song writer, but kind of tired to my ears.

gentle folk

Didn't tickle my ear giblets

Go wank over a spreadsheet, you nonce.

Nice sunset

Fine but a bit forgettable

A couple of good tunes on here that I’d listen to again but other than that not much else to write home about.

The music was fine, but I didn't understand the significance. I mean, the Dutch seemed to enjoy it at least. 5/10

A bit too folly for my country vibes and a bit too country for my folk vibes.

me aburrí

Gene Clark? More like Gene Wilder. Couple of decent tunes tbf

hmmm not very memorable

not a fan. I thought it was really boring

Pleasant. Reminds me a lot of the Don Maclean record, for better or worse. It ain’t Neil Young…

I know nothing about Gene Clark, going in cold. Loving the first song, such a warm groove. Halfway through, nothing has lived up to that first tune but generally liking it. Getting really sick of the harmonica, I feel this album could do without it or less of it. The bass is really plunky sounding, kind of getting on my nerves too - like I want to hear a stand up bass instead. Omg the Stand by Me cover is rough, we are going downhill. Overall not very impressed. Probably a 2.5, rounding down.

This album is exceedingly mediocre, and the guy doesn't have the best or even memorable singing voice.

It’s ok. Won’t listen to again though

Not bad but not particularly a standout

Nothing about this really interested me nor bored me. Not as good as The Byrds.

Bähh country

This isn't any good but isn't too bad either, kinda sounds like bob dylan or something? a bit folky, a bit country. I'm sure he put a lot of effort into it but it sounds like songs that might have been written in an hour or two each, and it's all one-take playing. Some of the guitars have obvious mistakes/bum notes going on. Will probably never listen again. But I do like the album cover hey. 2/5.

Not really for me

This is #day676 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… two solo records from a Byrds member on the list, I see. As if five Byrds albums aren't enough to hear before you die. How this is different from dozens of other country/folk rock records on the list, I don't know. This is a 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day677.

This is sickeningly generic.

Boring

i guess you have to be dutch to enjoy this

não fez meu estilo

You know I had hope for this album when I saw "Psychedelic Rock" but the only thing Psychedelic about this album is the amount of Psychedelics you need to be on to find this enjoyable. I wanna give this a 1 but it's going to tank my Psychedelic Rock rating noo my psychedelic rock rating....

This is not something I would pick for driving music unless I was looking to drive off a cliff. Most likely that would happen while playing Stand By Me…..what a disastrous cover.

If I wasn't working i'd have probably fallen asleep when listening to this. Best bits were the tracks with bits of outtakes.

Was 2, then I heard the cover of Stand By Me and it was an immediate 1.

About as exciting as sticking your thumb in a vacuum nozzle.

Didn't enjoy

This felt about 20 hours long...

I couldn’t get into this one

Another somewhat anonymous sounding folk rock record. I'm sure this guy was pretty big in his time (and in his location) but I could and should be listening to way better 70s singer-songwriters instead. What does Mr. Clark bring to the table that's better or unique? Oh, of course, he is one of the guys from the Byrds. That makes sense why this sounds so generic then.

Skoro sam zaspala. 1/5, 1/10

Oh dear. This was just irritating. It reminded me of camping with people who own guitars and although not asked to make sure they perform an impromptu concert. Actually this is usually me!! But I would never inflict a harmonica on peoples ears the way this dude does. Hated it

You lost me at harmonica. What a snoozefeet

Not an album I’m familiar with and not one I will rush again to listen to. Big chance to give it just one star because according to the new super duper summary page that the Head 1001’er has devised, folk is my favourite genre. This is not strictly a true reflection. Like this one, Wiki seems to lump American Country music under the folk music banner. In my book American Country and English Folk are as different as chalk and cheese. They may both be classed as music from the ages but sound nothing the same. So whilst I do generally like English Folk (because I’m English) I do not like American Country (because I’m not American) unless if one day I am lucky enough to go on a road trip to Nashville and it will be compulsory to listen. 1/5 7/12/25

1.5 stars another nail in the coffin of me thinking The Byrds are not good. This is Bob Dylan-lite, this is sober Townes Van Zandt. It all feels fake and strained and unnatural much like the other material The Byrds and all their permutations put out. The fucking rainbow imagery and flowers and covering Bob Dylan, fuck you. I still maintain that Sweetheart of the Rodeo is very good.

Jesus fucking christ

Little notes about this album, just 50 minutes spent on an album that could very easily have been removed from this list. This never felt like an album someone really should have listened to, there are many albums like it that are way better. 1/5

Some of these tracks are literally “we have Bob Dylan at home” songs. And others sound like they were written by whatever teenage guitar shop employee first taught Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) how to play guitar licks. Then there are times like “Where My Love Lies Asleep” where I can hear exactly how Neil Young would sing the song in his signature falsetto, but Gene Clark doesn’t have that kind of dynamism. If you think all of those artists are OK, then this middle-of-the-road folk album might be the OK-est way to aim all of that apathy at one record. Folk music for people who have only ever said “scrambled” when asked how they want their eggs cooked. Ironically, the song “Tears Of Rage” started playing while I was wrapping up the thoughts above (yes, I’m only 1/2 way through my listen). Quite apropos. Edit: I’ve now heard his version of “Stand By Me” and feel completely vindicated about my previous notes.

A bit dreary

Was hoping for something exciting for my 100th album. This was just dull.

More than one person on the 1001 committee grows their own potatoes... ..and wears sandals with socks.

Not a fan of the vocal style. The Byrds are over represented on the list and this album isn’t necessary either.

An alright singer/songwritter album. Didn't think it was that special or great in any way. Had two covers in it, sounded good, probably won't relisten.

First thoughts the moment I heard the first song was "Sweet Jesus, my brother in Christ, what is this?" The entire album is pure suffering and destroyed "Stand By Me", which is a beautiful song to begin with. If I could rate 0 or lower, I would. Shouldn't have gone solo, Clark.

Started it, but was no way in the mood for Chili Peppers

Pleasant sound, but as exciting as a slab of concrete. And there should have been a law passed that NOBODY could do a remake of "Stand By Me".

Lol absolutely not

I have come to the conclusion the inclusion of some albums in this list is purely to make others shine.

Country Music Is A Plague On This Earth

Hard to believe this is one of the 1001 most influential albums. It's so basic singer songwriter. Didn't mind the tracks For a Spanish Guitar or Tears of Rage. This is still really soft and emotional. He even covers Stand by Me. Have I seen this guy before at 7 pm Saturday at every local bar? Has a sleepy feel in it's tempo. Religious themes. There's so much ringing out of unnecessary words like iiiiiiiiiiii got a sandwiiiiiiiiiiiich.

This just shouldn't be on here. The Wikipedia blurb this site gives me literally says the album flopped on the charts. He's just trying and failing to sound like Bob Dylan.

Utter shit

If I wanted to listen to Dylan, I would listen to Dylan

muito ruim. (não aguentei terminar de escutar dada o quão RUIM ele é)

There were a few moments in this album that made me think I might be starting to enjoy it, but they were few and far between. It was overall bland and sounds just barely in tune.

Forgettable

I'm not a big fan of singer/songwriter music like this. To me this sounds exactly like several other albums I've listened to on this list. The lyrics might be interesting but the music itself wasn't. It also had two cover songs that were just worse versions of the original, which is a pet peeve of mine.

1001 albums... But 901 of them sound exactly like this god please make it stop.

He’s a poor man’s Bob Dylan. Unimaginative and stale, even when it was new. The Tears Of Rage cover is especially anemic.

Just dull. So very dull. Simple, to the point and lacking any depth or passion. Never once gets out of first gear. The harmonica adds nothing. Musically it's very plain. Country folk rock monotony. No innovation. Clark’s voice is timid though I will admit that on the final track '1975' the vocal lines are pretty catchy, but that's all I could pick out. I have no idea whatsoever how this album has ended up on this list. If I die today with this being the last album I listened to, I'd be severely disappointed.

I am sure I've said it before. I DON'T LIKE COUNTRY.

This is competent but bland and boring. Which would have gotten it 2 stars, until the absolutely horrible cover of Stand By Me. That took it down to 1 star.

It’s straight up singer-songwriter country-fried folk rock - a pale version of Dylan or Kristofferson. “Big in Holland” isn’t a huge reason for it to be on this list, methinks.

Finally my spirit has been broken. My God this is one awful dirge after another. Wish I could give a zero.

не нашел(

The number of. Crosby Still Nash Young and adjacent albums on this thing is ridiculous. And none of them are particularly interesting. This bored me. Want to give it 1.5 but oh well

I found this album pretty boring. I didn't even like the Stand By Me cover. 1

Harmonica country BS

This list treats the Byrds like they are the avengers. Idk why this has any relevance besides being from a former member of the Byrds Rating: 1.3

Really nothing that stands out. Its a basic country album. All sound similar and if you tell me its another singer I would never know the diference. There are few country artists I can really recognize essily and this dude aint one of em

This is the most repetitive episode of boring possible. I barely made it through every track, and other than the opening track, it was enough to make me sleep. I've never been a fan of Country Music(although this one felt more like folk), but this Folk Rock didn't provoke my emotions like it normally does. Favorite Song: "The Virgin"

Goddamn fucking harmonica first thing. Ugh. This has too many of the things I don’t like to listen to. This is tedious.

Most boring thing ever.

Why am I on album number 1003?

Country music is just whiny trash.

The byrds and their respective members were much more fun when taking LSD.

Kind of boring

Well that was something. If something was nothing and we're all living in a hopeless entity that will bring nothing but the end of time. Which I was hoping for after listening to this turd of an album. Awful.

Too bland for my tastes . never going to listen to it again on purpose . best track- the cover of tears of rage 1

Rating: 2/10 This album is impressive...impressively boring. Throw it in the bin.

Heading into this project, I was really excited that I'd get to hear some albums by bands like The Byrds, The Kinks, and Cream. There are a host of classic rock artists from the sixties and seventies whom I knew a few of their songs, but had never listened to one of their albums. I've reviewed three albums by The Byrds so far, and I've been really underwhelmed by them, so I don't have high hopes for this Gene Clark album, but I'm going into it with an open mind. Unfortunately, I didn't care for this album at all. The musical arrangements, while nice, were pretty bland. There were some nice organ parts, but that was all I really cared for. Gene Clark's vocals felt like he was trying to copy Bob Dylan's style of delivery, but it didn't work for me at all. Gene broke with that style on "Because Of You," which had the best vocals on the whole album in my opinion. I know the songwriting is supposed to be the shining star of this album, but I didn't care for that either. There was something about the structure of the lyrics that just drove me up a wall, and I felt like I couldn't make heads or tails out of the narratives of these songs. I'm really miffed as to why this album is on the list, when it's so bland and forgettable. It might be competently made, but I hardly think that criteria is enough to land an album on this list. I hate to be so critical, but this was a big miss for me.

Bored!!!!!

Не люблю это заунывное кантри

Well, it wasnt for me and why its a 1001 must hear is a mystery

Cowboy shit again!!!

Improved slightly after the intro to the first track (oh God no, not more country landfill?) but not enough to stir any interest.

This is another one of the albums to endure on this list.

Awww... that bloody harmonica strikes again! It's a shame I have such an issue with it, as Gene Clark's voice is quite soothing. Fecking harmonica! FWIW, I liked the album artwork photography.

little heat

Not something I'll listen to again

I don't like Bob Dylan, why would I like someone doing Dylan karaoke?

I found this unbearably twee.

Like a lot of these one off albums, did I need to hear this before I die?

Tämä Byrd on kuunnellut The Bandia ja tehnyt tämmöistä. Biisit koostuvat ikävä kyllä koukkujen muotoisista aukoista - ja tämä on tosiaan vähän ikävää, koska artisti herättää pientä sympatiaa.

Dreary country nonsense. Only decent track was One In A Hundred. The rest all sound the same.

How many singer-songwriter country folk albums do I have to listen to on this list? Just when you think this is over, it's only half done. This man has zero emotional range. See his completely flat version of Stand By Me.

Not good. It was short but that's the only good part. It's country and folk.

Hm, sounds countryish. Yeah sorry, can't get into this. 1 star.

Another lonely cowboy sings to his guitar by the campfire. I played the songs. None of them interested me. The piece For a Spanish Guitar promised to be interesting. If it was indeed written for a Spanish guitar, it lacked the virtuosity to play it. Boring.

Naaaah. Tråkigt helt enkelt

Jesus fucking Christ. No. This is like everything I can't stand in music wrapped in one package. I feel a headache coming on today and this certainly did not help. Oh, you've done it now Gene Clark. There's so many Byrds albums on this list, did we seriously need 2 Gene Clark solo albums as well?

This was not my thing at all.

Sooo boring and generic

Meh. I am not a huge fan of The Byrds and although Gene Clark is definitely talented, this album just isn't my thing.

The only interesting thing about this album is the riddle it invokes. As painful as it is to listen to Bob Dylan, do I dislike an imitator of his more for the lack of originality, or less for the efforts at actually singing? Truthfully, Gene Clark sounds, by turns, like he's imitating, on some songs, Dylan and, on others, Glenn Campbell. He touches neither's greatness.

Boring and hollow feeling.

Låter som han sitter och skiter och klämmer fram sången

Das langweiligste Cover aller Zeiten von "Stand By Me". Und der Rest der Platte ist genauso. Das Folk-Singer-Songwriter Genre ist, glaube ich, nichts für mich.

This sounds like half a glass of low fat milk left out on the counter too long.

too mellow

Everything I hate about country

Provinence be damned, this is a dull record.

My god, shut up with the damn harmonica

Not certain why this made the 1001 list….

Gene was praised for being a great song writer. Sad early death. This is too folk for me. When I was listening I was thinking that the bands he played in like 'The Byrds' may have been something my parents would have enjoyed.

American wallpaper. Probably needs to be played on an 8-Track or reel to reel. Ironic title considering the cover, showing sunset which due to the increased amount of atmosphere the light has to travel through contains less light of shorter blue wavelengths due to Raleigh Scattering. So, not white light.

Het soort muziek dat je niet alleen gestolen kan worden, maar dat je ook nog eens blij bent als dat gebeurt. En alsjeblieft geen aangifte doen, stel toch dat ze deze depressie op vinyl vinden en bij je terugbrengen...

Not for me

Aliexpress Bob Dylan

the longest 51 minutes of my life jfc

It was not my thing, it's what I expect early 70's American stuff to sound like in my head. All Bob Dylan tinged and generally uninteresting. Way too much harmonica. However I did have a strange dream last night where I imagined I was listening to today's album, this project is obviously playing on my subconscious mind, in it some odd solo American Saxophonist playing The Joshua Tree in its entirety, so I suppose this album is actually better than what my dream/nightmare was by a small margin. 1

Find yourself someone who loves you, as much FIFA loves oil money, as much as Facebook loves your data, and as much as 1001 Albums loves all things The Byrds.

Is it just me or were there no choruses in these songs? B..............................oh, sorry, I just woke up. Boring.

This is just so bland. I'm sorry. Kinda country rock I guess but no spark here at all. I googled all the best albums of 1971 and boy are there some great albums. This is not one of them.

The first real part of the Nine Circles of Byrds (why nine? Gram Parsons is kind of his own thing that was on a Byrds album, and Mr. Tambourine Man, which I got 10 days ago, is a good album to ease me in). This album - why? No, just why? Why do we need an ex-Byrd shamelessly copping Dylan while having an ounce of the talent in this book? Not all good folk is Dylan rip-offs. This book knows that - they have five Leonard Cohen albums. And unlike the Byrds, Cohen actually DESERVES those albums. Instead of adding more different sounding folk albums, they add two of a Byrd ripping off Bob Dylan. Oh yeah, he has two. Why does this guy get two, especially when he was in a band that has five? But let’s look at the album itself. Every single song is forgettable, except ‘Tears of Rage’ - a Dylan-penned song. Of course. I’d just be repeating myself if I talked any longer. Just skip this one. (Side note: why am I always so much more interesting when hating on an album than praising it?)

With the exception of ‘One In A Hundred’ and ‘1975’, the rest of this is as dull as the album cover.

Springsteen ja Young perseilee tälläsellä ja kerää nii saatanasti tähtiä ihmisiltä heti kun nimi vaihtuu laitetaan alempaa tähtöstä häH mikä vikana budjetti soittaja laulantekijä heh eipäs juuri mitään vikaa ja hyvä tunnelma albumissa siis kolmosta pantaan protesti tähditystä taas...en laita.. objective.. kiva upbeat vika biisi.. heh eroaa sillä tavalla toka vika biisi.. muut biisit samanlaista laiskan lörpökkää.. 1971 werd ik enthousiast van, mijn meeste lievelings nummers komen uit 71-74. Deze hoort daar niet bij! Wel een vette cover, maar zeurmuziek

So boring, already forgot it

Put me to sleep

This album was really boring, and one of my favourite albums is To Be Kind by Swans.

Not really what I like. Sounds good but not doing anything for me.

1 not for me

Just not my thing....

New music but a huge meh

Sorry Gene it's not you it's me. Just not a fan of the genre. 1 star because I don't need to hear it again.

bleghhhhhh

wholly unremarkable.

Whit dad music

Didn't enjoy. Nothing new and interesting.

no country

Country is country. Bleh!

this is what i was most worried about on the list. cuntry music. i just can't get past it.

Boring country type stuff, it's not for me.

Not really my thing, sort of a light... Gordon Lightfoot in my mind. Not really significant.
