could only listen to 3 songs on Spotify.
mother of god these guys blow — Standout: Love Can Tame the Wild
Just another random rock band from the '60's that comprised mostly of noodling and lyrics that were probably shocking at the time but are just weird now. Throw in hammering on an organ to compound the headache you will inevitably get from listening to this for too long.
Weird not sure I listened to the right album
Not my thing
I’m not sure what this was - three tracks?
Meh just not for me
Undoubtedly innovative synthesizer music at the time, boring music today
Baaaad
Álbum ficou errado no Spotify
144/1089 Bizarrely, not only are most of the tracks not on Spotify but 2 of the 4 that are (I hate you and Complication) are random royalty free youtube ad tracks After finding the songs on Youtube i can safely say, this music is not for me, i find this style quite irritating personally. the impact at the time etc i’m sure was cool but it’s the sort of thumpy punk-ish rock sound from this era that i just don’t care for Love Came Tumblin’ Down was probably my favourite if i had to choose 15/100
That's punk, OK BUT 12 songs quite the same - thats bullshit.
Sounds like a jumbled mix of instruments.
Listened Before? N Unavailable on Spotify
Very strange music. What’s with the organ music? Weird!
I'm not a fan. I'm happy that I listened and it seems like it deserves it's place in the list - given it's such an early example of a band doing something like punk. I won't be seeking it out though. Kind of durgey in parts. Actively annoying in tone and delivery in parts. Then quite a lot of stuff that just doesn't feel that interesting to me.
Instrumentation was fine but the vocals I found very irritating. Was waiting for this album to be over
I usually love 60’s music, but what in the world was this? Seriously bad.
Pretty terrible stuff. The addition of the organ feels totally out of step with the vibe they’re going for. Unintelligible lyrics and utter lack of melody.
More sixties slop.
Honestly this is getting 1 star because I couldn't get this on Apple Music and when I did it was just not that great.
Weird
It sounded like they were fine, then had a seizure midsong.
Tried listening to this with my 1966 ears. I don’t think I would have given it any credence back then. I understand how it could be considered influential. But, all my 2025 ears hear is simplistic, uninteresting music.
Every song was the same. Maybe revolutionary, yes, but boring.
You ever start reading a book, and its not quite fun to read? And as you keep reading it gets less and less fun? And you're thinking "Certainly there's a point to all this reading" and about halfway through you realize that its not going to get much better than this and you couldn't be bothered to continue? Yeah thats this album. Its just... noise. I expected some sort of depth or interesting concept behind it, but about 4 songs in I just couldn't subject myself to it, and I DNF'd. 1/5
Nope.
Who picks these albums?
Can’t listen to it not on Amazon music
Not my kind
Couldn't listen to it
Doesn't exist on Spotify or Youtube music, but I managed to listen to half of it anyway. Wasn't to my liking. You can hear that it's early in the rock era and not as refined as it later becomes. Everything sounded barebones and the instrumentals and vocals didn't carry.
Can't believe I had to load up YouTube to listen to this
awful.
Possibly interesting, back in the day.
This album was not for me at all
When Alex and Blake were at the peak of their pretentious music phase, this is exactly the kind of crap they’d go on about being 'good'. Utter rubbish
Did not find anywhere
Terrible album not listenable
Kuin tehty yliarvostetuksi: tuntematon, lo-fi, koukuton.
Not sure why this is on the list did nothing for me
Found this really annoying to be honest. I dont take much issue with the instrumentals, as I think they are alright, but the fact that every song needs this excruciating "funny voice" i do not understand. What people who hate the beatles think they sound like. Best: Monk Time (i guess) Worst: Cuckoo
Not good at all. Cool story. Terrible album.
All except one song is unavailable on Spotify and the one that's there is not very good
didnt listen
En skal høre mye ass..
From the first second I knew this would be a passively listened to album. Whatever the lyrics may be, I immediately hated the voice and knew it would be a hard one. Squeaky boring yucky.
Points for the strident/direct fuck you to the war at a time when it was probably taboo (and especially for GIs!) and I've read about their schtick which is interesting but we're here for the music and holy hell the music sucks so spectacularly hard that maybe they were just 60 years ahead of the "Sirs, this is a Wendy's...." meme. Hard to believe they never made it big. 2/10 1 star
I don't want to be too negative because I'm sure the band members of the monks are lovely people. But that was shit.
Having an international perspective I can point to a dozen Australian proto punk bands who got interest overseas and would be more influential than this. It’s ok but listening to Australian acts like the masters apprentices, lobby Lloyd, Easybeats (to a degree), Billy Thorpe. English acts like the troggs, or the kinks. Americans are obsessed with having the most influential bands. I’m not saying these guys weren’t. But there were other garage rock and proto punk bands in the US. So this becomes some hipster bs, if you don’t know this you’re not cool rubbish. This is the type of attitude that gives us 550 Neil young albums on this list. Go and put on The Monkees - stepping stone is a much better song. 3.5 for the record. Minus two for its non essentiality. Rounded down. 1.5
What the Hell. No.
Wasn’t even on Apple Music, so had to go on YouTube. And it was boring
Not available in the EU on Spotify. The only song that I could listen to didn’t strike me.

Experimenteel.
A bit whacky and their only album. Not terrible but not worth it.
Þökk sé höfundarétti fékk ég bara að hlusta á tvö lög af plötunni og það þýður bara eitt. Ein stjarna í refsingu en það er í lagi því þessi tvö lög voru ekkert spes þannig séð
This is like the "music" me and my buddies would make after getting stupid drunk. The monks might have had a lot of fun creating this album, but it was not fun for me to listen to it.
Not available
Bem repetitivo.
How dare you leave 1 available track from an entire album? I will not put more than one, 1/5. Although I think their songs are cool
Yeah this one can stay off Spotify
Jesus, imagine being around in 1966. There wasn’t much new music, maybe you take a chance on this to try something new, and then you get home and get fucking BORED out of your goddam MIND. Bullshit.
Not good
Nö! Uninspirierter Lärm. Da klingt Nachbars Rasenmäher besser!
Just no. I hope to never hear this music again. If I was making a terrible 60s movie, I would choose it for the soundtrack. Just awful. How embarrassing it must have been to put this out at a time when we had The Beatles.
na spotify niedostepne
Of all the albums we've listened to so far this is the one that I have been feeling the least. I just didn't want to listen to it. It's not that all of the songs were bad or anything like that, because I did like the sound of some, it just wasn't me.
Annoying old rock
3 minute album?
Ekki fyrir mig
Nope
Easy review... Spotify only lists one song on this album. Amazon Music doesn't even show this album. I do remember the album art for another Monks album: Bad Habits with a sexy nun.
It's just weird, and not in a good way.
This is the first album where I didn't have a clue what I was in for, but reading about the band this morning, I was excited. It had all the ingredients I like. It didn't work for me though, I have to give it some love because I can hear how much they inspired bands that I love. But those bands did it better. 1/5. At least ZZ Top made me laugh.
More 60s landfill psyche shite
At first, I couldn't find this album on Apple Music or youtube music or anywhere, but later found someone had created a playlist of the tracks. I thought it was a forgotten album, maybe it's awesome. Then, I hear the lyrics saying they are army and have music that sounds like generic '60s sound. This isn't the album for me.
Count not even listen to it
Beat, Soundtrack, 1966
This album was removed from Spotify
???
Very repetitive and simplistic sound/rhythms; however, it's dated because it is dated. An early sixties vibe, but clearly not as popular as other bands of the day. Wouldn't listen again
I actually had to listen to some other tracks by them because this was not available on Apple Music. Nevertheless, it was weird. The organ intros, and the rapid preamble to each song were followed by pretty typical 60s pop. Nothing special but I could see the appeal.
First album I genuinely couldn't finish. I understand the 60s was kind of a burgeoning time for rock music moving into the mainstream, but this album was practically unlistenable. There's nothing redeeming here. How does a band that sound like a high school jam band get a spot on the "Greatest albums of all time" list??
I have nothing good to say about this album. There was not a single track that I can say I liked. Not surprised this is the group’s only album. It’s awful. I can tell the band is having fun, which is nice, but I was not. I suppose I have to acknowledge its importance in the development of punk rock, as the Wikipedia page points out. But it’s so bad. I couldn’t wait for it to be over. The opening track gave me no hope for the rest, and it lived up to my expectations. 1/10. Don’t even like any songs enough to have a favourite. But if I have to choose, my top 1 is: Monk Time. I still don’t like it though.
Vow of silence please
This shit was not good
No
Couldn't get through this one, after about track 5 I'd had enough. Absolute shite.
I don't like it. I get that this is avant garde but that doesn't make it enjoyable. Some might call it proto-punk, but if it was actually good people would probably just call it punk.
Short one: didn’t like. the Bunks
I get why this record is influential to punk. Super clear about that. But this isn't good. Every track is a staccato mess with a brow beating message. So even though I agree with the message, this record still just sort of sucks. Another 60s artist held up too high.
Yeah this was pretty bad. I was optimistic going into it. Thinking it would probably be average. It was well below average. Barely listenable. And that guy's voice... 🤮. 2/10
This one was just not for me. Sounds very similar to other bands I've heard. The melodies themselves weren't terrible, but I really, really dislike the singer. Not really a fan of any 60s music similar to this. 1.5/10
I refuse to believe people enjoy/enjoyed this
last song was okay, the other songs sucked
100% trash throw it away
Like a carnival ride that just keeps on spinning around and around and around and around and around and all you want to do is get off and so you try and make eye contact with the carnie but he's not looking and it just keeps going around and around and all the people around you look like they're having fun and you can't understand why and it keeps on going arou-
Never heard of the Monks. I was ok with that.
1.5
These songs were hard to listen to.
jajajajajajajajaj no 2
Oh no. Terrible
maybe one good song on the album - understand the are influential, but why?
Repetitive and uninteresting
Ahead of it’s time? sure, but god damn is it unpleasant to listen to. I reckon I spent half the time physically grimacing. 😣
Didn’t like
This album is a mix of obnoxious and repetitive.
There were some instrumental aspects of this album that I quite liked. In particular the erratic organ sound of the keyboard was pretty interesting and I enjoyed the heavy bass lines too. But that's no compensation for how much I loathed the vocal delivery. It's not the sound of the guy's voice itself that get to me, but the godawful songwriting of the vocal lines. I guess it's supposed to be so jarring on purpose, but I absolutely hate it.
While this album was likely culturally relevant back in the 60's, it aged terribly. There's hints of Beatles influence but feels like it's just noise created to stand out in a crowd of other anti-war Vietnam songs.
I hate it
Couldn't get into this one.
why block music in NZ?
I don't think it will ever be black monk time in my house again.
No thank you.
Only the one song on Spotify, 1/10
Can’t actually listen to this album
Didn't like this one. 1/5 stars.
Nothing for me here
Really not my style.
Zenuwslopend!
Olipa todella sekavaa menoa.
2/10. The music wasn't very interesting, the songwriting was boring, and the lead singer sounded like a Muppet on the verge of a psychotic break. Not for me.
Meh, not really a fan.
good shit, these boys kick
