Reviews (page 12 of 12)

Good stuff, such a dork

Veldig 80' talls med kjærlighetssanger og synth. Koselig, men ikke mye som treffer meg noe særlig. Dette er yndlings albummet til Antonis!

Shoutouts to sledgehammer but rest of it is pants. Music for divorced women.

So….

He's got an incredible voice, in your eyes / sledgehammer are very good songs, but outside of that, this album is very boring (putting this after two metal albums probably didn't help). Early 70s prog-rock Genesis is peak Peter Gabriel and nothing in his solo catalogue comes close to it.

Not my jam

I’m going to just level with the internet here. I really don’t like Peter Gabriel or Genesis. I think they are lame maximalism. I know some people love this stuff and I’ll give an extra star for those people but man oh man, nope.

Genesis were fucking shit, and So is INCREDIBLY 80s, although more accessible than anything Genesis did anyway. First two tracks are good, think everyone in the world knows Sledgehammer, but it falls off a cliff after that and struggles to get back anywhere close. Big Time tries with some party vibes and big backing singers and stuff to jazz it up but nah, not quite there, and everything after that is crap. A generous 2 because of the first two songs.

Teilweise gut

A slog to get through. I'm not a fan.

Dammit. I'm not a Peter Gabriel fan. But I'll keep an open mind, despite my concern that I might become a Peter Gabriel fan. I listened to about half the album. I'm still not a Peter Gabriel fan. Also, the album sounds incredibly dated listening to it in 2024.

1.8 - the best parts were the extended instrumental sections. some songs were just weird. Last song "in your eyes" saves the album, but still not good enough. second listen through it was a little better, definitely a few decent tracks but a little too 80s sounding. 2.4/5

It was ok. Nothing really special. Kind of sounded like Phil Collins but the songs just dragged on for too long. I appreciate the introspective vibes throughout. Might be a good listen on like a moody day or smt😂

It kind of grew on me, then disgrew, then grew again. Lots of mixed feelings for a project where Gabriel's vocals are tremendous, highlighted feature

Had never knowingly listened to Peter Gabriel. Slightly more upbeat than expected? Red rain and mercy street top tracks.

i just don’t think i like this kind of music that much

This album was nothing special. I don’t know why this is in the 1001 albums to listen to list. I don’t feel any more cultured and my musical horizons certainly haven’t been broadened. So much of this record felt uninspired and unmemorable. It’s just generic 80s radio music. Nothing off the wall or boundary pushing, just some music. I’ve always heard of Peter Gabriel in music forums and whatnot but I had never listened to him. After listening to “So” I will continue to do just that.

Not for me

This album starts off strong with two great tracks. I still have a fondness for “Sledgehammer” because of the music video. The rest of the album has some great production value. The drums and synths really do it for me. But I doubt I’d ever want to listen to the full album again. “This is the Picture (Excellent Birds)” is aggressively awful. 2.5/5

Not sure why this one is included here. Sledgehammer is a good song though.

The songs are too long for what they are. Initially I didn't like it one bit, but then Mercy Street and We Do What We’re Told (Milgram’s 37) happened, the latter is especially good

I've heard this one many times, it is quite good in some ways, although it's definitely not my favorite Peter Gabriel album, as I kind of like the earlier ones that are a little less over-produced. I don't know which of Gabriel's albums I like best (maybe "Melt"?) but this one feels like a bit of Daniel Lanois doing a dress rehearsal with this sonic palette for U2 albums, which have greatly soured for me in my old age (but that's another story). Basically, this album feels a bit artificial to me, and that's a lot to do with the production, of turning live instruments into that very '80s sound, of mixing them into sounding like synthesizers. That bass, especially, sounds really synthy. I miss Robert Fripp from some of Gabriel's earlier stuff. I think they worked really well together. It's no coincidence that this album is the one that really launched Peter Gabriel into the stratosphere, as it's WAY more pop that his previous albums. And even though this has an appearance from Kate Bush, quite frankly it's a bit of a cheesy ballad. Not their best, either of them - of the three "duets" on this album, I think the one with Laurie Anderson. And even though Gabriel did it better than people like Sting (ugh) after him, and maybe even Paul Simon before him, I still have quite a lot of feelings about this whole "worldbeat" subgenre that was rippling through rock and roll at the time, largely through white men having midlife crises, using African people as props in their own music. It's a little gross, isn't it? "In Your Eyes" is a really great, although Youssou N'Dour is just kind of an ornament hung on it. The douchebag from Rusted Root said this album "gave everyone [white people] the go-ahead" to swipe the music of colonized people and turn into pure cheese-pop. Ugh. What's the opposite of an endorsement? That's what that quote is for this album. I guess that kind of points at my issue here - Gabriel is doing a lot of the same things his peers were doing at the time, like the worldbeat thing, and the Fauxtown ("faux" + "Motown" = the sound of middle-aged white guys like Gabriel, Billy Joel and Phil Collins trying to emulate R&B like Motown and Stax-Volt... yes, I made that word up, so what), which we see in "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time." And the U2 sound is hard to avoid for me, even though this is before those albums. Gabriel is doing all of these things BETTER because he has more ideas and better songs, but those are things I'm really not into, so that kind of stains this album for me. It's probably my least favorite Gabriel album because I have to kind of suppress my gag reflex throughout. 5/10

Sledgehammer reminds me of early MTV and getting to watch it on my grandmother’s cable tv if she didn’t catch me. lol. I saw this weird video in my early teens. Not a big fan of his sound in general, but Your Eyes has a special place in my heart from the boombox scene in the movie Say Anything.

Yeah had the hits reminds me of beong a kid kinda nostaligic background music

comically 80s. goes between disney movie soundtrack and musical 'Sledgehammer' is the least boring song on the album and it's kinda dull too.

Try as I might, this sounded like cheese to me. Does cheese have a sound? This would be it. If I had been born a decade or so earlier, I might have said about it… uplifting, positive, energetic, all-around great vibe. Unfortunately I wasn’t, and my rating reflects that.

So dated. Outside of the nostalgia factor on the hits you already know, this is not a good time.

I don't get it...why is this one of the top albums? Sounds like middle-of-the-road 80's pop/rock

very 80s pop rock.

Not a fan, could not finish!

för mycket 80-tals sound men sledgehammer är ändå rätt fet.

Ei ole mun juttu... Tosiaan melkoiset Phil Collins -vibat tässä. Ei jätä pysyviä muistikuvia tämä.

Honestly dislike it’s not my vibe It’s like the experimental 80s stuff that isn’t really experimental it just has weird instruments in it Think in your eyes has better covers

Not my usual genre. Enjoyed a few moments though it.

I did not enjoy the sound

Meh, b+g

This is a tough one for me. I don't understand, or am ignorant of the importance of this album. It's good, but nothing I haven't heard before, and done better, by the likes of Phil Collins. It is a fun album that fuses several genres of music, and does it well. The music video of "Sledgehammer" is undeniable though. Overall, it's good, but I think others do it better in the same era.

Sledgehammer is good, but all of the instrumentals are painfully from the 80's and there is a reason that style died quickly. Also his voice has always been grating.

Ei ollut erikoinen

hey millennials you were probably conceived to this awful music. Picture your dad going at it to sledgehammer.

I was dreading the day I had to listen to 80s pop. This one is not for me. Mercy street was a nice suprise

I don't think this sounded bad by any means, I just personally didn't care for most of the songs. I did really like the song Red Rain.

Unfortunately, this was just kind of boring to me. Favorite(s): Red Rain, Mercy Street

Not my vibe at all for an album. Won’t ever listen to again.

sounds like it should be Top Gun. Is this considered yacht rock or just regular 80s pop rock? Sledgehammer is a bop.

Peter always sounds out of breath.

Its okay

Sledgehammer was fun. I didn't love the rest (those lyrics, terrible! I really don't get it). Had never even heard of Peter Gabriel before this, the mid-late 80s in general is a blind spot for me.

2 out of 9 songs One song was relatable, motivating The other was a chill vibe Reminded me of david bowie a little

Sledgehammer slaps

Seems like a solid album if you like this kind of adult contemporary, but I really don't care for the music.

I was about to say "the hits are the hits and the rest can be left behind" but this is some sort of weird berenstein bears thing where the songs I know didn't even quite sound like the songs I knew. Maybe it's just been a very long time since I heard them. Or maybe I heard the wrong version of the album?

Very 80s sounding album. Nothing to energizing or exciting in my opinion...

I'm not sure how to classify this but it's not great.

I struggled to stay interested in this one.

Ok - men kun et rigtig hit

Not really my kind of thing

Getting the song "Red Rain" back to back with "Purple Rain" is just not fair. Oh well, Peter Gabriel did his best, but he does sound like an imposter on this list of musical titans. 2 sympathy sledgehammers out of 5 🔨🔨

the singles are okay but the production is gross and the whole thing is tepidly over- earnest

Just a bland album, I personally won't be listening to this again.

Could be worse Not much though 2

As you would expect from a Peter Gabriel project this album features aloof vocals, songs, and performances. The backing tracks are interesting but they sound like the test track that your Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 would play when you finish installing the drivers. In Your Eyes isn't bad.

Softlad

This isn't Tarzan

Ugh felt like I was in a Boscov’s for 45 minutes

Sledgehammer and Big Time are some of the better songs on the album. This Is The Picture (excellent birds) is just weird. Overall, a boring album

2.5, not my jam other than Sledgehammer

Sledgehammer, Big Time Mercy Street is a candidate for the most boring song ever. Big Time and Sledgehammer are 4’s and the others are 1’s and 2’s.

Boring and not for me. If you are into astrology this is a 5. we do what we're told

Remember when white people discovered world music? Boy the 80s were full of that trash.

Sledgehammer

Puuh olipas aika väsynyttä setärockia näin Frank Oceanin jälkeen. Oli siellä pari kivaa hetkeä, etten ihan ykköseen pudota.

This album had two hits on it (which are bangers) and the rest felt like an 80s movie.

No my thang at all. Quite irritating. So repetitive just a general no

Peter Gabriel seems like a solid dude, but this album is wack. Best track: In Your Eyes

This album was definitely from the 80s. Didn't hate it but also kinda boring. Also, I totally knew it was Kate Bush!!

fav(s) - sledgehammer

I feel like it has 2 good song on it

Saved by Sledgehammer but the rest of the album is so meh. Not my kind of music but maybe it was groundbreaking at one point. Jus sounds like typical 80s pop.

I respect Peter Gabriel, but this is too 80s and I can't get behind it at all. Feels completely contrived and commercial packaged up nicely to be listened to over a K-Mart speaker.

I'm only really here for two songs, one of which mainly for Kate Bush. The rest is fine but not for me. Very late 80s and safe sounding. Ha ha, Big Time

It's fine I guess

It's decent but kinda boring - not a bad sound but nothing new or interesting. Shelved 5/9, but then decided to try 2 of them in fresh loop.

Me suena a baladas en inglés masomenos, no me agrado mucho la voz igual

Not a big fan, or a fan at all really.

red rain not even that bad just way too long applies to the whole album tbh i actually can’t stand old music

Not the good 80s, but I’m sure women wearing pant suits back then loved him

Pas fan

What a shame that Sledgehammer, one of the greatest tracks of the 80s, had to be stuck in amongst this woeful dreck. Woof this album stinks. 'Adult Contemporary' and the adults are all fucking prats.

grateful that there are only 9 songs because jesus this was awful. the absolute worse kind of 80's music. i'm honestly shocked there are people out there that enjoy this. nostalgia is the only explanation. but anyway other than "in your eyes" (nostalgia, like i said) "big time" was my favorite, it was pretty catchy.

odiei todas praticamente. pessimo. mt chato dont give u eh a menos ruim

Have been obsessed with Wuthering Heights since last weekend when I went and watched it last weekend and it’s very fitting that the third song on this album is featuring Kate Bush. The only song I’d heard before listening to this album is Sledgehammer.

Ugh slow and cheesy. Not good! Even the hits are not good!

Eesh. I'm sure there's an audience for this but it is definitely not me. As with "The Weight" by The Band, I agree that "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time" should be an essential songs to listen to before you die, but the whole album? Um, no. I really tried on this one but I think the hits were the only song I listened to the whole way through, and I struggled with that.

It was ok. Nothing really stood out to me. 3/10

I think I had high expectations for this album. Prior to listening to it I already knew the big hit ‘Sledgehammer’, I’ve really enjoyed that song for many years so was looking forward to hearing music of the similar vibe. However I was met with dissatisfaction as none of the songs clicked with me at all. I re-listened a few times but I didn’t feel the vibe at all. I’m aware this was when Peter Gabriel was taking a more commercial approach, so maybe I should check out other albums for more creative and out there sounds and styles. It just sounded like loads of boring sounds out together to make a really mediocre album with no real groove or passion, that excludes ‘Sledgehammer’. Favourite tracks are: ‘Sledgehammer’.

Slow, soft, bleh. Not me

Mega słabe, nie moje brzmienie niby rock ale stary chyba jak świat. Wole mocne elementy i charakterystyczne a to było jak masło maślane i modliłam się żeby każda piosenka była ta ostatnią

A few absolute bangers surrounded by some extremely 80s duds. Sledgehammer and In Your Eyes are great.

Este álbum no me ha gustado mucho, hay algunas canción que si pero otras que no

It’s aight

Not my cup of tea

Tönt!

no bad boo

Tråkigt!

I really didn’t enjoy this. Musically very clunky and although I know Peter Gabriel is an intelligent man the lyrics here are pretty plodding.

Ballads, kinda naf. Didn't do anything for me. Wasn't a bad album but I really wanted it to finish

When I was a kid, I used to hate maths. During each lesson, I would make exactly one drinking fountain break and one toilet break. This would ensure I would spend as little time as possible in the lesson. My year 8 teacher, understood this. She was always ready for it. Bless her, that's probably why I followed in her footsteps. I knew I'd hate this album. I left the room to fill my water bottle twice, went to the toilet twice. It stunk. Why do we keep getting this jerk?! It's just lame Phil Collins-esque 80s music. Sledgehammer?! What a dumb song. Yeah, fine, there was a little bit of musical entertainment in the odd baseline throughout. But it's just an old guy making crap music. Stop giving it to us. No stars! Oh, I mean 1 star!

I do not like this. This is not for me. "Big Time" is, in fact, being added to my list of songs I strongly dislike.

barely made it through the first song. as soon as sledgehammer came on.....nope....can't do it. Man, there are no words to describe how much i hate that song.

Terrble

This is the worst of 80's world music. A good artist making a bad album.

No, not for me.

I really dont like Peter Gabriel

Not my vase of apple juice

How on earth did he manage to make Kate Bush sound boring? That's just plain impressive.

boring as hell.

Dull after the first two tracks

A talented man performing very dull music. 1.5 stars.

Absolute snoozefest

h: sledgehammer c: red rain

Hated this. Every backing track was repetitive and annoying and the vocals got on my nerves after a while

not my type. sounds like a phil collins style, doesn't sound fresh. 1/5

Unlistenable. Made it through 40 seconds, turned it off.

The album wasn’t technically bad, but this is my least favorite type of music. It does absolutely nothing for me — except remind me of sitting in the waiting room at the dentist office (never had any cavities).

I actively dislike Peter Gabriel, and disliked this listening experience. No need to belabour that.

This is the first one that I couldn't finish. And all the songs were like 6 minutes long, which is so long for repetition of like 3 phrases (musical and lyrical lol). Anyways, it felt like one of those movies that had so much potential but the execution was lacking.

Did nothing for me outside of the classic Sledgehammer.

Don't fuck with him or PHil Collins

boring but sledgehammer is good

hated it. I’d give it 0 stars if I could

Not my jam. In your eyes is pretty ok

This album feels like it's part of the wrong decade. The eighties were great, and this fits more on the slop of nineties melodrama

This is just not good? Who voted for this crap?

1/5 Not my thing. The hits sledgehammer and In your eyes are fine. He’s obviously incredibly talented. Almost seems like trance music. I get that it’s fusion, just not what I care for.

Pretty lame stuff, Peter Gabriel. Even the 'hit' didn't hit for me (Sledgehammer). Solsbury Hill is a shitty fun song but it isn't on this album. ONE STAR.

não gosto desse estilo

The nostalgic enjoyment of Sledge Hammer was not enough to save this album.

Boring..... the Sledgehammer was the least boring

Utter. Shite.

Annoyingly cringey

Sledgehammer was played everywhere. All the time. The video was played everywhere. All the time. Sledgehammer, indeed. Don't Give Up stopped me from giving up, and to this I pin one star. Annoying voice (wasp in a jam jar) and just clunky nonsense, really. Terrible lyrics! Let there be no doubt about it ...

I have to admit I didn’t finish this. Dull and more dull.

Only love can make looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove

Did not interest me.

That was really bad. I can't comprehend how this can be considered one of the greatest albums. It's not musically profound in any way, just dreary and strange.

Too eighties

I wish I could say this was so so. Instead, I got one of the most agonizing albums I've ever heard. I suppose art is supposed to make one feel things. I felt pure rage and hatred towards the hack known as Peter Gabriel. Fuck him and his "music"

Some good

No my favourite

I don't like his voice. I've known this for years, I don't know why I decided to give it another shot.

Just not my cup of tea. Sledgehammer is a jam tho

please god not the 80s again

Zzzzz. nope. 1/5

Couldn't make it through "Don't Give Up". Scratch that. I couldn't make it through MOST of the songs. Found the album to be incredibly boring. Even the "hits".

Pretentious pompous and bombastic. Self important wank

More boring 80s trash

Typical synthy 80s pop.

A little strident for my taste

I just can't even rate this album. I've listened to it twice and can't remember anything about it. I give up.

Was going to give it a 2 before i heard the african singing on the last tack. 🤣🤣🤣Truly horrific. Makes this a 1.

people actually liked this stuff to the point that peter gabriel and phil collins had successful solo careers?

So is so so if not bad. How is every song not like Sledgehammer? May be only Peter Gabriel album I listen to

ništa ne fali albumu samo je meni lično dosadan

So... I did in fact gave up on this album after 3 tracks.

Made it through 2 songs and got bored

not for me

I just don't understand the appeal at all. The voice isn't particularly good or interesting, the production is typical 80s trash, the songs aren't fun to listen to, it's not really dance-able. There's nothing to like.

Sledgehammer // Don’t Give Up // 1-1.5/5

This album is So (bad) FS: Big Time

Välillä tulee mieleen Kirka, ja jos olisi enemmän Kirkaa, olisi parempi. Todella mitäänsanomatonta. Toisaalta helppo jättää taustalle ja olla kuuntelematta, jopa kuulokkeilla.

Kate Bushin markkinoima Don't Give Up, tylsin kappale mitä olen koskaan kuullut, olisi ollut symbolisesti hyvä paikka lopettaa. Kokeilin vielä seuraavaa. Ei tässä reiluudesta olekaan kysymys.

I really don’t enjoy his voice nor the aggressively 80s sound.

so bad

Awful mid-80s pap that has definitely not stood the test of the years passing; which is a little a disappointing because I quite liked it at the time. Sounds too much like Genesis.
