I've heard sledgehammer and in your eyes often and have always noted how melodic they sound, how they must've been ahead of their time when they were released. However it seems that those two songs are the high point of this album - everything else sounds like plain, overproduced 80s/90s drivel

its okay. red rain is falling down i guess. not my personal pick, as I am really picky in what i listen to. usually, i wouldn't pick an album with the dude's face on it. i like the sledgehammer; it sounds like an 80s tv show. the more i listen to it, the better it gets. I guess its because i'm getting used to it. 80's music is long, and not much is going on. very slow. its good doing something else while listening to it, because it's a bit repetitive at times.

26/12/2025 1. red rain - immediately liking the bass. very atmospheric... very 80s. not entirely sold on his voice though.... very dramatic. not much to say about this one, didn't love it, but didn't hate it either :/ lots of the positive reviews i've read seem quite nostalgic for this, but i've literally never listened to peter gabriel before, so maybe that's why i'm not liking it as much?? 2. sledgehammer - reminding me of the music in wii sports resort basketball. really nice bass though. this is just background music for me. it's alright, but nothing really pushes it into something i would actively choose to listen to. the ending is really nice, especially with the backing vocals. 3. don't give up - nice intro. really sweet synths. the bass in this album is really great. i still don't like his voice, sorry! kate bush???? this is just boring to me. not finding this sweet or comforting, but preachy and annoying. i would kill myself if i heard this song again. how is there still a minute left. the instrumentals are nice though. 4. that voice again - i don't know how i'm going to get through this album. got loud and i'm liking it more :) bass is reallly nice. still very 80s, but in a less bad way than earlier songs. chorus is alright. 5. mercy street - liking the organ/synth at the start. had a break and his voice is sounding a bit better to me. i like the softer sound of this one. still a bit too 80s pop for me, not in a good way. 6. big time - this is the most 80s song ever made. still not in a good way bass is still nice though. *7. we do what we're told (milgram's 37) - the synths/electronic noises are really nice. guitar just started, liking it. more dreamy so far.... only one i've really liked. may redeem the album for me. very atmospheric...... loving this one. album redeemed. 8. this is the picture (excellent birds) - liking the intro. reaaally 80s. liking the vocals more. probably because there's not as much peter gabriel. liking the lyrics. 9. in your eyes - so glad this is almost over. not even enjoyable the way abba was. bass is still nice. all of the songs are far too long, especially when you're not enjoying them :( i didn't connect to any part of this album (except for the almost instrumental song that i really liked <3) and found it far too cheesy with a very overproduced 80s sound. maybe i'm too cynical for this, but the anti-suicide song just got on my nerves. as someone who likes synthpop, i didn't think i'd dislike this album so much, but it's like if you put my least favourite parts of generic 80s music and put them together. understanding why people don't like overproduced 60s pop now (they're still wrong).

Couple songs give me some Phil Collins vibes, somewhat one dimensional at times but enjoyable. Definitely a product of the time, can't say I'm the biggest fan but not a bad album by any stretch.

Totally new to Peter Gabriel, I obviously know some songs, including the finale on this one In Your Eyes, but otherwise I have not gone out of my way to listen to this man. This album feels the most 80s, synths and all. Red Rain, Mercy Street and In Your Eyes are standouts. This is probably not something I would come back to often, but it really flows from start to finish and there are some good bits in there, I do like the accompanying singers especially on Don't Give Up (Kate Bush).

This album has that big band sound. Not big bad as in orchestration, it’s more like a “hey look at me, I recorded in Africa” sound. Like how Sting would do it or Pink Floyd with the division bell. I don’t get or see or hear anything special with this album. Even Sledgehammer isn’t a generational sounding song to me. This is just your parents music if you grew up in the 80’s. I'm not the world's biggest fan of the Genesis sound, so this album didn't really impress me either. Some good hits here and there (especially in that Kate Bush feature), but even breakout hits like Sledgehammer aren't the same without the music video. Rätt gott men inte tillräckligt gott för att ge någon tillfredsställelse men inte heller så mycket msg att man mår illa så man liksom ringer upp chipsen och albumet och det/dom bara pågår och hur ska man egentligen ta den liknelsen i mål? Och ja, Kate Nashbush är ju den stora behållningen men det är ju egentligen bara för jag sett stranger things för asså helvete vilken scen det ändå var. Farligt nära en etta den här plattan.

Som att lyssna till Phil Collins sjunga till rederiets soundtrack. Räddas från ettan av låten med Kate Bush och In your eyes (som Phil Collins Tarzanlåt fast sämre). Så överdrivet städat sound. Musik för 80-talsyuppies...och Dino.

His fifth album. Pop. This is such a slick 80s album. I actually quite like the production on this one. Don't Give Up is a good track. Gabriel's vocals compliment Kate Bush really well. Overall it's a nice album but it just doesn't really grab me at any point.

Don't Give Up was unexpectedly profound. Definitely the highlight for me. In Your Eyes was probably the best of the more typical sounding tracks. There are particular synth sounds throughout that make it sound cheaper than I think it deserves (though they were no doubt quite exciting and experimental at the time). 👍Don't Give Up

I really dislike the 80's commercial pop sound and therefore a lot of Peter Gabriel, but I gave it a chance and did enjoy the composition, even if the end result is .... unsatisfying. Ultimately, though, this is representative of an era of pop I struggle with so it's gonna get a low score (2.5)

Awfully long album... I listened to Red Rain, Sledgehammer, Don't Give Up, and In Your Eyes. Only saved In Your Eyes... Games Without Frontiers (from another album) was quite cool tho. Overall not my kinda thing:/. Respect though.

Eurgh, this does not move me, perhaps it should, I concede it's possible that if I listened to it many times it might grow on me, as some Genesis stuff did. But I found it all a bit pretentious really and his voice somewhat grating. There, I said it 😐

Lyrical writing was so odd and seemed unprofessional almost to the point where it was irritating. Overall not terrible music but there are so many better albums of this genre and from this time.

I don’t like this album very much. It’s full of a lot of the 80s sounds in not that big of a fan of. It also feels like a worse Phil Collins, and I don’t really particularly like Phil Collins.

Sledgehammer is still a banger (side note - I didn’t realize it was about his dick until now) and Big time kind of does (the poor man’s Sledgehammer which is also somewhat about his dick). The rest pretty much sucks. We do what we’re told randomly sounds like a bonus track from OK computer which is kind of cool I guess.

Love “In Your Eyes” and of course grew up on the videos for sledgehammer & big time. Decent album would say 2.5

The production is aggressively '80s. I don't hate it at all, but it did feel like just listening to adult contemporary radio. It didn't piss me off so I won't give it a 1, but I also didn't especially like any songs and I'll never listen to this again.

I wanted to like this album but really couldn't bring myself to care for it. I love prog music but this album was genuinely boring, and ONLY BARELY passes as prog at all. It has too much of an 80s stagnancy to it. Usually when it comes to prog pop and prog rock of this era, it still sounds fresh and experimental today, just look at Yes, Rush, Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, the list goes on. But this album doesn't even sound new for the 1980s, more like an artsy-fartsy take on some the generic pop of the decade (cough cough, Genesis, cough cough). The quality and memorability of the songs barely varies throughout the album. Even Sledgehammer, upon relisten and framed in the context of the full album, sounds much more dull and my opinion of it has gone down a little. Peter Gabriel has certainly done great work, but this album is not the magnum opus that it's lauded as. Not low quality or low effort by any means, but very forgettable. I can't see myself returning to any song, and definitely not to the album as a whole. 4/10

First song was good. The rest was mid. In your eyes is one of those songs that was annoyingly stuck in my head ALL DAY after I heard it. This album seems like it’s the point where Peter fully sold out. It’s a long way from those early Genesis releases which I enjoy very much

Should be called "So-so." "Sledge Hammer" is great, and "Big Time" isn't bad, but the rest of this is the kind of limp, boring pop that dominated the 80s.

Quite boring but I guess it's neater than most of '80s pop.

Bowie lavede Let’s Dance, Paul Simon udgav Call Me Al, Yes faldt til 80er patten med Owner of a Lonely Heart osv. Peter Gabriel kan ikke sige sig fri med særligt Sledge Hammer og Big Time på dette album.

A real rollercoaster. Some classic bangers (Sledgehammer, In Your Eyes), some nice, mellow atmospheric jams, but then some real 80s experimental wacky songs I couldn't get into. Overall not my favorite.

This score was going to be a 3, but the second half of this album is a proper drag. I thought maybe I’d like it this time? I especially enjoyed Red Rain and Don’t Give up. Great musicianship. But when the “world music” influences come in… no thank you. Reminds me of Toto in the worst possible way.

A nostalgic revisit of this album bearing in mind I was 18/19 years old when this was in my “cassette” album collection (sorry didn’t do vinyl then!) - it holds up well these day. Never forget seeing the Sledgehammer animated video for the 1st time when videos were a really big deal for a single release. Love Mercy Street- probably my favorite on the album.

Ok, sledgehammer is better than I remember and I’d forgotten about the song “Big Time” which was very fun. Otherwise, its very 80s and not particularly interesting to me.

There are some bangers in here and a few clunkers. I forgot how catchy Big Time was!

I'm not saying it's a bad album, but everything sounds too 80s: the music, the instruments, the production... It screams that it belongs to this period. And I'm not really fond of the gimmicks of that time. Some songs are good, some are also far too mellow (the 80s production doesn't help).

Nothing excited me with this album

Peter Gabriel is a weird dude. Like Brian Eno weird. Like David Bowie weird. Just weird. This is a classic 80s pop album that's both catch and cool... but not weird. "Sledgehammer" is a big hit but it's not weird. Peter Gabriel didn't sell out because every now and then, people need to get paid. But this isn't what Gabriel is all about.

So is the fifth studio album by Peter Gabriel, originally released in 1986. I'm not a huge fan of Peter Gabriel's solo work. I really tend to prefer his Genesis-era stuff. I think he fell victim to the 80s production fads, and that shows on this record. I'm sure it was pretty revolutionary/experimental at the time, but it certainly didn't age well. This record in particular seems to lean more into pop than his previous work. Apparently this is because of pressure from his label to "market" his music better. There are some cool moments on here, particularly when he strays from the pop song structure and lets the synths create a spacey, trippy sonic landscape. It has its moments, but leans too far into the "80s pop" vibe for me.

Liked every song but every song was too long. They all overstayed their welcome.

In your eyes is really the only song I was into.

This album manages to encompass both the best and worst of what I think of as the most stereotypical 80s pop. In Your Eyes is pretty great and hits the mark with some 80s cheese but in a good way. Stuff like Sledgehammer and Big Time are 100% cheese -- Sledgehammer being the worst offender with innuendo so uncreative that it's been basically parodied to death at this point.

Peter Gabriel strikes me as the worst person to have over for dinner

There are a couple of really iconic songs on this album, but for me, overall the album didn't hold up very well. There is some about his vocal style that kind of sets me on edge. It's kind of like he's on the brink of having an emotional fit of one type or another.

There's a few hits for sure. It's probably because it's 2024 and not 1986 anymore, but this is literally the most 80's album I have ever heard in my life, Jesus Christ. It's really not bad and even has a song or two I enjoy. It's really getting a 2 because I'm looking at the things I gave a 3, and it's just not quite on paar with those.

It was okay. Not bad or good? Just very slow and too boring and mid. Kinda annoying for me personally, his voice is not the best… 4.6/10.

It’s really hard for me to separate this from most other dreadful 80s pop synth/drum machine dreadfulness. He’s even deployed the one of the 80s greatest musical instruments, Kate Bush’s voice, to very little effect. Only the singles Sledgehammer and Big Time (which I enjoyed more than imagined), save this from a 1*.

Me: "Alexa, what did the 80s sound like?" Alexa: "Playing 'So' by Peter Gabriel." Me: "Alexa, that's enough of that thank you very much!"

I guess there’s a time and place for songs like Sledgehammer and In Your Eyes, but man was the rest of this a slog to get through.

What was it with music right around 1984? That signature 80's, overly-produced pop sound infiltrated just about every artist making records at the time. And it was noticeable, even as it was happening. Case in point.

Sledgehammer was a huge hit when I was a teenager, but aside from that track the rest of the album was fairly meh. Made it all the way through though, so the obligatory 2 stars are given.

The first few songs were good. I could see myself putting this on if I were in the mood for an ultra-80s sound. The second half was a real snoozer, but I did like the finish with In Your Eyes.

A lot of the albums on this list are timeless. This one is most certainly not. Definitely has the 80s vibes right off the jump. I guess it’s the synths that were in style back then maybe? And the vocal style/mixing. Instantly gives it away. It felt boring/cliche to me. It was a shorter album but the songs were SO long. I remember looking down at my phone at 330pm and I was shocked I was only halfway through. Another part of the album that was a bit out of style. To me this album is like a niche tech that took off, but was ultimately rendered obsolete years ago.

Cheesy lyrics throughout with a lof of repetition, didn't enjoy too much. Voice is okay but doesn't carry that much emotion for me, 2.5.

It has some moments—my fav was “This is the Picture” but mostly because it reminded me a lot of The Talking Heads—but overall, it’s got a little too much melodrama and 80s synth for me. Totally makes sense that he and Phil Collins worked together though, they have a lot of the same sensibilities.

He's got an incredible voice, in your eyes / sledgehammer are very good songs, but outside of that, this album is very boring (putting this after two metal albums probably didn't help). Early 70s prog-rock Genesis is peak Peter Gabriel and nothing in his solo catalogue comes close to it.

I’m going to just level with the internet here. I really don’t like Peter Gabriel or Genesis. I think they are lame maximalism. I know some people love this stuff and I’ll give an extra star for those people but man oh man, nope.

Genesis were fucking shit, and So is INCREDIBLY 80s, although more accessible than anything Genesis did anyway. First two tracks are good, think everyone in the world knows Sledgehammer, but it falls off a cliff after that and struggles to get back anywhere close. Big Time tries with some party vibes and big backing singers and stuff to jazz it up but nah, not quite there, and everything after that is crap. A generous 2 because of the first two songs.

Dammit. I'm not a Peter Gabriel fan. But I'll keep an open mind, despite my concern that I might become a Peter Gabriel fan. I listened to about half the album. I'm still not a Peter Gabriel fan. Also, the album sounds incredibly dated listening to it in 2024.

1.8 - the best parts were the extended instrumental sections. some songs were just weird. Last song "in your eyes" saves the album, but still not good enough. second listen through it was a little better, definitely a few decent tracks but a little too 80s sounding. 2.4/5

This album was nothing special. I don’t know why this is in the 1001 albums to listen to list. I don’t feel any more cultured and my musical horizons certainly haven’t been broadened. So much of this record felt uninspired and unmemorable. It’s just generic 80s radio music. Nothing off the wall or boundary pushing, just some music. I’ve always heard of Peter Gabriel in music forums and whatnot but I had never listened to him. After listening to “So” I will continue to do just that.

This album starts off strong with two great tracks. I still have a fondness for “Sledgehammer” because of the music video. The rest of the album has some great production value. The drums and synths really do it for me. But I doubt I’d ever want to listen to the full album again. “This is the Picture (Excellent Birds)” is aggressively awful. 2.5/5

The songs are too long for what they are. Initially I didn't like it one bit, but then Mercy Street and We Do What We’re Told (Milgram’s 37) happened, the latter is especially good

I've heard this one many times, it is quite good in some ways, although it's definitely not my favorite Peter Gabriel album, as I kind of like the earlier ones that are a little less over-produced. I don't know which of Gabriel's albums I like best (maybe "Melt"?) but this one feels like a bit of Daniel Lanois doing a dress rehearsal with this sonic palette for U2 albums, which have greatly soured for me in my old age (but that's another story). Basically, this album feels a bit artificial to me, and that's a lot to do with the production, of turning live instruments into that very '80s sound, of mixing them into sounding like synthesizers. That bass, especially, sounds really synthy. I miss Robert Fripp from some of Gabriel's earlier stuff. I think they worked really well together. It's no coincidence that this album is the one that really launched Peter Gabriel into the stratosphere, as it's WAY more pop that his previous albums. And even though this has an appearance from Kate Bush, quite frankly it's a bit of a cheesy ballad. Not their best, either of them - of the three "duets" on this album, I think the one with Laurie Anderson. And even though Gabriel did it better than people like Sting (ugh) after him, and maybe even Paul Simon before him, I still have quite a lot of feelings about this whole "worldbeat" subgenre that was rippling through rock and roll at the time, largely through white men having midlife crises, using African people as props in their own music. It's a little gross, isn't it? "In Your Eyes" is a really great, although Youssou N'Dour is just kind of an ornament hung on it. The douchebag from Rusted Root said this album "gave everyone [white people] the go-ahead" to swipe the music of colonized people and turn into pure cheese-pop. Ugh. What's the opposite of an endorsement? That's what that quote is for this album. I guess that kind of points at my issue here - Gabriel is doing a lot of the same things his peers were doing at the time, like the worldbeat thing, and the Fauxtown ("faux" + "Motown" = the sound of middle-aged white guys like Gabriel, Billy Joel and Phil Collins trying to emulate R&B like Motown and Stax-Volt... yes, I made that word up, so what), which we see in "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time." And the U2 sound is hard to avoid for me, even though this is before those albums. Gabriel is doing all of these things BETTER because he has more ideas and better songs, but those are things I'm really not into, so that kind of stains this album for me. It's probably my least favorite Gabriel album because I have to kind of suppress my gag reflex throughout. 5/10

Sledgehammer reminds me of early MTV and getting to watch it on my grandmother’s cable tv if she didn’t catch me. lol. I saw this weird video in my early teens. Not a big fan of his sound in general, but Your Eyes has a special place in my heart from the boombox scene in the movie Say Anything.

Try as I might, this sounded like cheese to me. Does cheese have a sound? This would be it. If I had been born a decade or so earlier, I might have said about it… uplifting, positive, energetic, all-around great vibe. Unfortunately I wasn’t, and my rating reflects that.

This is a tough one for me. I don't understand, or am ignorant of the importance of this album. It's good, but nothing I haven't heard before, and done better, by the likes of Phil Collins. It is a fun album that fuses several genres of music, and does it well. The music video of "Sledgehammer" is undeniable though. Overall, it's good, but I think others do it better in the same era.

Sledgehammer is good, but all of the instrumentals are painfully from the 80's and there is a reason that style died quickly. Also his voice has always been grating.
