Reviews (page 5 of 6)

Never really connected with this.

My rating is based entirely on the 2021 Director’s Cut, since the original 1991 release — like the rest of The KLF’s catalogue — was deleted in 1992 and is now mostly a collector’s item. What stands out immediately is what isn’t here: the big hits (𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲? and 𝟯 𝗮.𝗺. 𝗘𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹) are gone. They’re still available elsewhere, of course, but not in this reconstruction. (Congratulations to anyone who still owns an original copy.) This cut focuses on the more atmospheric, conceptual side of The KLF, closer to the album they originally intended. Admirable in idea, but it just doesn’t work for me. I’m not particularly into this branch of dance music, and the Director’s Cut doesn’t change that impression.

I definitely had a preconceived notion of what this was going to be before I listened. Yes it’s electronic music but it’s super melodic. Fun background music for your day.

zou dit soort muziek niet echt opzetten als ik alleen ben aan het luisteren maar wel interessant also was beetje moeilijk om te vinden waar ik het hele album kon luisteren

Dit was gewoon lame

Feel like being born in 1997 and therefore never being around for the early 90s eurobeat scene might reduce my enjoyment of this album.

Niksig, 1 banger

a little bit kooky and hard to place. electronic i guess? there are some sounds and songs i vibed with. then No More Tears comes in with its mahoyney noyney 10 minute doodle bob monologue lookin ass and truly takes the tiny little breezey bit of wind that WAS in my sails straight out of my sails. if i liked the album i'd say it consistently surprised me and kept me on my toes, but instead i'll just say that it lacked focus. i guess it was technically amusing; at its absolute highest points it sounded like the *insert coin* menu music for an arcade racing machine. favorite song is 3AM Eternal

Rating: 5/10 The album and this duo have a really interesting story and history and they're British so their inclusion here makes sense. As far as the music goes I don't really know how to feel about this one and don't have much of an opinion after my one listen. I will give it a very fine middle of the road rating and move on for now, and maybe check out their other album 'Chill Out' one day to see if my opinion of the group is swayed

A bit generic.

Music which was only relevant at the time

Not very interesting, fairly generic-sounding albeit slightly above-average house music. Not really something I’d ever listen to in any sort of mood though.

The story of the band is wilder than the album itself which is interesting electronic beats. The album is tricky to find, I listened to the Directors Cut on Spotify.

I'm fine with the philosopy of the KLF -they made their own path and followed it throughout. However, the music is shite. Annoying and repetitive, probably quite OK if you are sorted for E's and wizz but not at 4pm on a thursday at work.

The funny thing is before I went into listening to this album I was incredibly prepared to defend the KLF from naysayers in my group. If you have any memories of them at all, surely you remember how they combined satire and genuinely interesting production techniques to build a uniquely weird pop mythos that emboldened the best of cheesy eurodance while drawing attention to how ridiculous any pop music is. The problem is they also made The White Room, which dares to ask the question: what if every album Orbital made in the 90s was equally spacey and four times as stupid? You can see where the comedy lies on the edges of every song. But then, if you're like me, you'll listen to the "stadium house" versions of every single after this album and realize that's where the magic lies if you, also like me, love ridiculous pop music and ridiculous parodies of pop music. The story behind the version of "Justified & Ancient" with Tammy Wynette on vocals is legendary. The wimpy serious ass version of "Justified & Ancient" that repeats itself *twice* on this album is fucking stupid, and not in the good way. From their inception, the KLF were destined to point out how easy it is to manipulate the pop charts and get the people moving. Shame they didn't follow any of their advice on their most lasting album.

really interesting production, very 90's sounding with some hints of 80's synth still holding on for dear life. this was cool, but its not on spotify so i wont ever listen to this again lol 5/10

Bit boring

Electronic

More like “The WTF”.

I place this in the IYKYK category. And clearly I did not know. I assume this is some of the better euro-trance out there. But again, what do I know. What I do know is how fascinating their story is. No doubt one of the more unique. Apparently jokingly wrote about how to achieve a hit song, then actually did it, then disbanded, burned all monies from it, destroyed their records and disappeared into obscurity. High concept art I guess.

Best jazzercise album I’ve heard in a while

Spotify didn’t have the album but I saw some video of them live….what in the world! Some heavy D style rapper. Some guitarists with sparks flying off his Les Paul with huge Marshall stacks but not sure I hear a guitar. Some dudes dressed like an African tribe. Ladies in white dresses a lady in red. Foil on the drum mic. All I can say is “wuuuut?” and give this a 2.

Pretty good background music while working. 2.5/5

Hard to believe this is a special example of anything

I kinda remember the highlights of this one from when I was a preteen. It wasn’t something that appealed to me then, and i can’t imagine that it’s something that appeals to me now either. Thankfully, it’s not really available for me on Spotify, so I won’t have to listen to it to confirm that. I’ll give it the 2 stars it probably deserves and consider this a bye day. Yay! Thanks, KLF! 2/5

Best Track - "What Time Is Love?"

I only got to listen to 1 track — that’s all that’s on Spotify and only a few other tracks are available on YouTube. It’s dance/club music, not sitting around music anyway. I’ll give it a 2 because it’s so influential that I can’t even find it to listen to 🙄. And it’s in a genre (dance) where albums are not as relevant to the listening experience

Ok. Not really the kind of music I generally like, but to be fair there are some decent tunes.

This really is not to my taste in music, however unlike some of this kind it was quite melodic, having noticeable tunes. It wasn't just a load of noise. Still not my thing. For me this is a 2.5.

The first thing that comes to mind after listening to this album is "hit or miss." Like, the songs that I recognized, aka the ones that were legitimate hits, were bangers. Amazing. Really felt them for the combination of nostalgia and the fact that they were straight up excellent songs. Some of the others though either bordered on cheesy or were just straight up cheesy.

It’s fitting that the first song is called “Go to Sleep” because that’s exactly what this album made me do.

Solo había una canción en Spotify,... pero se ve que todo el disco es relleno

What a weird album made only weirder that there are maybe 4 version of it? This is so far away from any genre I like. It’s. Ok.

Techno with a side of hip hop. Not my usual faire, but this offering didn't hurt to badly. Don't think I'll put it in rotation but it's pretty good. Listened before? N Saved tracks? N Favorite tracks? Last Train ⭐⭐ Didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.

Deezer only had the 2021 director's cut, but I found the full 1991 album on YouTube. Okay background, but not something I'd want to just listen to. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Build a Fire ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.

Somewhere between German nightclub electronica and 80's fantasy movie soundtrack. Production is good, but I am not the audience.

Very far out of my music comfort zone, it makes me wanna dance at a club in the 90s but also that lowkey sounds like a nightmare

Wasted a nice walk listening to this

Listened before: No I hated it at first but around the halfway point some of the tracks started to grow on me. Most of it is still generic house but there were moments that weren't ass. Band has an interesting story. Still a 2/5 because pretty much all house music makes my blood boil

I don’t like it.

fairly basic electronica but that might be a naive take given its age. assuming it’s a very influential group?

The KLF are an amazing band and they are a spectacular art project, but the music does not hold up. Slathered in 80's and early 90's production, weird rap/pop and proto beats. Justified and ancient has a charm but its generally not good.

Not my bag.

The euro dance vibes didn't start this very well, but some bits of this are quite intriguing. Still not my vibe, I wouldn't listen to it again, but I'm pleased I did.

this was so wild and i feel like one of those albums i probably would have liked if i was around for that time LMAO it does make me wanna go full skins on drugs at a crazy party 🤍

Hmmmm ok wow schnazzy! Honestly haven’t listened yet

I was kinda digging it until that last song. WTF was that? Like listening to xtian rock. Barf.

Listening to this album evokes a lot of memories from that particular time in my life, specifically, living in England as a 20-something in the late 80s. Going to clubs, dancing and experiencing British nightlife after having spent most of the 1980s in Aussie pubs watching live bands - a totally different scene and sound. The beats, the vocals and the whole style of music was totally new and invigorating at the time. Definitely a product of its time and still made me want to get up and dance. Would I choose to listen to it now? Probably not.

I was living in England when this record was released. I didn’t enjoy the music on release and over 30 years later my opinion has not changed. A record that has the band channeling the English folk scene and even touches of Led Zeppelin. I’ve tried again, but never to be listened to again.

Didn't do much for me, although I can see how this might be nostalgic for some - I probably had to be there to get this one more. Interesting production, they clearly have a strong idea of what they're going for but this genre doesn't seem to keep my attention for long unfortunately.

Another day another pretty nothing album. It happened. I listened. And I just got nothing. Build a fire was the closest it got but even then its not worth my time. Meh is all I got for this one. Meh meh meh meh meh

Acid house art project? Piss take? Dated? Yes. Best Tracks: What Time is Love?; 3 A.M. Eternal; Last Train to Trancentral

Had to find the correct version somewhere else because apparently the 2021 remaster that's on Spotify is completely different. It was a fun album at first but after two songs it got boring because to me most songs sounded very similar

I didn’t really give this a fair shake-got about 10 minutes into it, but had to turn it off. Had to find it elsewhere than Spotify. I am interested to learn more about this band though, even if I guess I had to be there to “get” the music. Doubt I’d revisit it. Sorry KLF.

eclectic but bad genre

Interesting album. Seems quintessentially late 80s/early 90s. According to the Wikipedia entry for this album, it was originally meant to be a soundtrack to a movie of the same name that got cancelled. Probably would have been a strange movie too.

Another triple blind for me. Best listened to at a fashion boutique in 1989 during a dressing room montage. Not bad But also not necessary…

They were more interesting as marketers than as artists. A fun band to read about but not to listen to. Their whole schtick was dumb as shit. As a fan of Doctor Who and Gary Glitter's "Rock & Roll, part 2", I enjoyed their earlier track "Doctorin' the Tardis"., but let's not convince ourselves that they were anything other than the clowns with zero respect for just about anything, and proposed to support every batshit stupid idea that came around. THE WHITE ROOM, is certainly is not an all time album that needs to be understood by anyone. The only track from it that was great but is no longer on it , probably due to five finger liberating fartoo many kopyrights, was "What Time Is Love?". I feel like there are way more other significant artistic and cultural contributions from electronics artists both before and after this album that go missing so that instead we can get this twaddle. The only interesting tracks ("Build a Fire" for example) that the KLF have on this album are interesting only because they stole the riff or sample from a more creative artist. What they do with it isn't all that interesting itself. Do yourself a favor, ignore this and go find Enigma's MCMXC a.D., Ministry's LAND OF RAPE AND HONEY, or Yello's ONE SECOND or Yello's FLAG, and listen to something with a bit more heft of intelligence to it.

Only 1 song on spotify

IIRC they were wild before this album. Kind of like the Prodigy. On this album they went commercial. I liked their older stuff better and it was probably more influential. I remember they played some award show together with Extreme Noise Terror, which was more my scene.

It's okay. Def very 90s.

Album 943 of 1089 The KLF - The White Room (1991) Rating : 2.5 / 5 As with most electronica, this one didn’t do much for me overall, though I can understand why it’s well regarded among fans of the genre. It does have its moments - some sections with actual lyrics and melodies that pull it slightly out of the full-on electronic zone - but just as I start to settle into those, it drifts back into the sounds and loops that lose my interest. That said, I can appreciate the production value and the creativity behind what they were trying to do. It’s clear there’s a vision here, and for those who connect with this type of music, I can see how it would hit the mark. For me, though, it’s just not a style that holds my attention for long. Still, I’ll give it credit for being better than some others in the same lane — at least it showed some variety and personality.

I wasn’t able to find the album. Just one song. Based off of other songs I listened to by this artist I will provide a rating.

Just nothing to it

4/10. No he tomado suficientes sustancias químicas como para apreciar este tipo de música.

Probably a decent offering if you’re into that thing and a good example of that type of music from that era. Just find it hard to keep my attention with that type of album.

Listened to the "Director's Cut" by accident, then found out I had to listen to the original release, STILL didn't like it. Influential I assume, but DULL.

There were a few moments on this album I liked, most of them instrumental, but overall it really wasn't for me. 2.4/5

Sounds very of it's time. And honestly no track really reached out and grabbed me.

what a time capsule. they must have inspired heaps of other artists. not only music, also game soundtracks. that, or the whole decade sounded like that. not something to listen to on a regular basis, though.

Not as bad as I was expecting, given it's electronic music. I can see why people think this one is cool.

This album definitely has some good bits sprinkled throughout, but I feel like there is a certain goofy element that messes up the vibe I was hoping for. Best Track: Go To Sleep

Nothing special. Don’t really have much else to say about this.

Not a painful listen, but not a particularly good one either.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is a sort of dance pop album which has some Britpop and even some Reggae elements in some places. It's light and airy, and a little bit interesting in some places, but overall not super captivating. I would not listen again.

Ugh, this list has the worst taste of obscure boring basic British electronic music that should just be forgotten. No More Tears was alright but there's no reason for it to be 9 minutes long. Justified & Ancient was the only song I liked through and through and earned it an extra star. Not a necessary listen. Better than Daft Punk though

Parts were OK, just not my thing.

Not my thing but tolerable

All right, but not really for me. Sure it sounds good in a club.

Meeeeeeeeeeeeh……

I don’t think you’re supposed to listen to this without cocaine.

I’m a little less than neutral on this one but it didn’t have any songs that really hooked me. I’m also considering it a ska album because of the upbeats in one of the last songs

Just not my thing.

Sinto-me numa discoteca às 5h30 da manhã. Em vegetal. No início estava cheia de energia e estava a ser incrível!

Time for another unfamiliar (to me) artist and album. First impression it’s its much more upbeat than the electronic albums I’ve had thus far, but that doesn’t necessarily make it good… kind of feels like comedy with the lyrics “I’ve been waiting, you’ve been waiting, we’ve been waiting…” right through to the final track Justified & Ancient. This basically sums it up: Franklin Soults stated in the 2004 Rolling Stone Album Guide that on The White Room, "the KLF became what they'd mocked with this enduring embrace of Euro-trash club culture. They knew their exit cue."

This was not absolutely terrible. I've read you had to be there to get it and I think that rings true for this album. I wasn't there so I don't fully get it. Will not go onto my rotation.

Electronic that has vocals invariably puts me off. Didn't get through one tune.

Build a fire sounds like Fish from Marillion is on it. I like the song Justified and Ancient. The rest of the songs definitely make me think of college and are fine in

It was maybe technically good, but not for me.

I’m glad I listened to the KLF album. I think that whole early rave era you had to be there. It hasn’t aged well. 1989 is a bit too early in electro timeline for me. 2/5

Sadly, KLF are more interesting than their music.

I wish I wasn't so deep into this list. After yesterday's album, I started to think maybe I should rate these albums not on quality or appeal, but on legitimacy of if the albums deserve to be on the list. I have a never-fading memory of KLF Mostly stories of antics, audacity of their book and 3 A.M. Eternal I'm not really into anything on this album except for 3 A.M., but I do feel that it absolutely deserves placement on this list. Like all those albums I don't really care for in the 90s on this list - I feel The White Room kicked it all off and for that it belongs. I'm still gonna rate this the way I've been doing for the past 500+ albums

First few tracks were good. Otherwise pretty ok-ish British house music. Not something I’d seek out again most likely.

Did not enjoy.

Jeg kendte The KLF for to ting: - At de brændte £1 million på en skotsk ø - Justified & Ancients syrede og fascinerende video der kørte på mit MTV i 90erne I den kontekst var det her album godt nok ekstremt kedeligt. Selv Justified & Ancient var en tam omgang. Hvad blev der af Tammy Wynnete? Hvor er den samplede guitar?

Interesting album not necessarily for me. 4.1/10

It's not omg-turn-it-off awful. But it's not my thing and certainly nothing groundbreaking to warrant attention here. 2.0

One's just not into it – and never was. The massively annoying "3 AM Eternal" is somewhat – but only somewhat – compensated for by "No More Tears." "Madrugada Eterna" would be better without the sampled vocals. Like so much club music, this feels disposable, forgettable and very much yesterday's news.

As an art collective making critical commentary, they are interesting. As a force of music, not nearly so much.

I get that it was fairly groundbreaking for dance music, EDM, and the like. But it's a little too same-y throughout. I couldn't see myself listening to more than one song at a time. There isn't anything that makes me want to turn a song off here, but two or more... I'm out! I like some others of this genre, and they may well have been inspired by this, but I thought it was a genre that evolved a bit later. (And of course there were a lot of shit imitators, too!)

Justified and ancient!

Another British electronic album. At least this one was quite lively. Still not my thing. 2/5 Won't listen again

At least there's some vocals on these electronic tracks. Not that I need them to enjoy music, but electronic music is mostly so boring to me that they at least help me differentiate between tracks. This wasn't an offensive waste of time like some of the other 90's and early 2000's electronic albums that have been on here, so it's getting a 2. I did listen to the director's cut though, so maybe that changed the original? Who cares.

I'll take your word for it that you had to be there. It just sounds so random to me, and the samples throw me out of the groove more often than not.

I know this type of music is repetitive, but it was repetitive in all the wrong ways.

I wasn't feeling this one. Seems very dated now.

Not sure what it's supposed to be.

The whole album has aged poorly. You can very clearly tell when this was made. There were aspects to some songs I liked, but towards the end I was eagerly waiting for it to be over.

One of the YouTube comments called this “timeless” like this is one of the most dated things I’ve ever heard

There is a guy at my gym that always puts on some electronica station which sounds like this. The music is ok but it feels like something that should be played at rave more than something released on a CD. There wasn’t any specific single or hook that got me interested. I wasn’t really a fan of the reggae inspired song either. Not sure when or why I would listen to this, as rave music sure, but as an album probably not.

My expectations were low and it met them. It wasn't terrible, but it's just not anything I would want to listen to again.

I don’t like clubbing. Much because I can’t dance, but also because I don’t like the music. After reading about the band, I really wanted to like it, but I couldn’t be bothered to spin it another round on youtube

Like, it's elevator music with 80s breath songing

Definitely don't need any more electronic music on this list. At least this has some vocals to make it a little more interesting than most of what we've heard.

Not my usual listening but it is well produced and above the norm for a lot of the dance tracks of that time.

Hörbar!

Вроде чем-то похоже на евродэнс, но нет, хуже.

noooo la polizia electronica noooooo

This album was in 3 star territory until No More Tears. A 9 minute heavily reggae/ska influenced EDM song with a 2 line chorus repeated way too often in between a dude scatting/falsetto scatting? Some might call that hell.

I'll start off with minus one star for deleting your catalog and making it hard to find. I don't know, seemed like just average house music to me, nothing really super fantastical about it

This is a tricky one for me to rate. I have never been a house music guy but I am a go with the flow guy so I took an edible, popped on the album and played video games. I really dug it while it was playing. Got into a decent grove. But even as I was listening to it in the back of my head I felt something was lacking. Next day I am thinking to myself how unmemorable the album was overall. No one track stood out, Nothing pulling me back to revisit the album or even seek out more from the band. It feels like it was only something for a particular moment and I am pretty sure without the edible I wouldn't have even had that moment. So I guess my review is I appreciated the moment but now it's gone...like tears in rain.

Nothing special imo. I was hoping for more commitment to the synthwave vibe but found the vocals too forward to really get into it, and some of the arrangements were wack. Feel like this was kinda caught in no mans land between synthwave and 80s pop, and it didn't do either one well. Would give it 2.5/10 but rounding up to 2/5 only because LCD Soundsystem American Dream has defined rock bottom on my score sheet and this isn't a total dumpster fire.

pretty sure i heard this album at abercrombie & fitch in the 00's. mindless drum machine wanking.

Oh brother!

Interesting mix of mellow electronica and Dido-esque contemporary music. Definitely liked the cuts with the female vocals better, Make It Rain being the best of them. L = (1.9*s) the songs started to sound similar. J = (2.8*s) liked The White Room and will check out more of The KLF.

Super German dude pulls up in a BMW convertible: "Hey fun boys get a room! Hahahahaha" That's all I have to say about this.

OK, but did not really get into it.

Not the worst electronica on the list, but it is still bad.

I dunno what it is with all these 90s British electronica albums. I dont get any of them. Maybe you had to be in the rave scene at the time idk.

Not for me

i remember the song 3AM Eternal from when i was a kid. I saw the video on MTV and it looked so cool. I never bought the album, but now it's been 30+ years i'm kinda glad i didn't spend the money that album for that one song. As i listened through the album they use the samples adroitly, but it's kind of a snoozer. Most of the songs have that "4 on the floor" beat and it get's kind of boring. They did throw in a song that has a reggae feel which was kind of cool. notwithstanding this won't go into the rotation. 2/5

This party music makes me feel like I want to go home while I'm in my house. Would've loved their million quid...

Olipahan toimintaa joka suuntaan. Ihan viihdyttävä ja sopivan pituinen (välillä oli aika rankasti paljon tavaraa), mutta silti olin hyvilläni, kun loppui.

🎧Yeah idk this would probably be awesome in a club/at rave but in literally any other setting, it does very little for me. Acid-house maybe just not my thing.

Le petit côté electro-beat fait son âge… Je n’ai pas accroché, et le mot qui me vient en tête est «racoleur»…

Not really for me.

Feels just like background music to me...nothing that stands out. Very homogenous. I'd never heard of them...and I guess you might not have if you weren't into raves. They don't have the original on Spotify but I'm guessing it wouldn't matter to much to me.

It’s hard to find the original release anywhere, but I found a user playlist on Spotify that pieces it together and I heard it enough times in the 90s to give it a fair review. Outside a couple of tracks (the singles) it’s just repetitive and dull electronica.

No esta en mi zona de confort

Some techno beats. Long and repetitive. Fine enough, but not something I'd put on

Doesn't do too much for me. I'm not an expert in the electronic music, so I'm not sure if this is unique or extraordinary in any way, but I wasn't blown away from what I heard. and nothing stood out to me. It was okay, in that half-listening sort of background way, but then again the sound of my vacuum cleaner sounds just as interesting.

Average album Some interesting beats but generally not my kinda music Ahead of its time sound wise

Ugh I don't like this 90s pop sound. Some of the good songs are only good because of their samples.

Von "na ja, wer es mag" bis "Wow, das hat was" ist alles vertreten. Insgesamt nicht meins, wird dann etwas nervig. Plastik

Another 1.5 rating 2

Sounded like the soundtrack to a Sega game

Está guapo, muy atado a un momento musical muy concreto, pero veo cosas de aqui que han estado volviendo últimos años.

Solid attempt in a stupid genre.

no es mi estilo xdxsd

Not particularly cohesive. More of a collection of disparate dance songs. Not bad per se but not very interesting either. Not for me

This album feels so stuck in 1991 it’s almost unbearable. I don't hate it, but I don't really love it either. If the album is lucky, it'll get a 3 rating and I'll never have to listen to it ever again.

more boring-ass house music

I get it, House was a fun disco party thing (contingent on MDMA), and rave DJs across the western world were infected with the urge to set inane synth bass and drums to insipid piano jingles and soul vocals. KLF have got to be the most earnestly trite way to spend an overnighter in a warehouse losing your mind and your hearing.

I think its a good album for a workout. I am imagining playing it while in a zumba class or something. It isnt super memorable, and the songs kind of run together for me, but it the beat is good.

I think I would have liked this album a lot better as an instrumental. The vocals seemed really cheesy and dated. Ultimately, it was pleasant enough but nothing here would ever compel me to do a voluntary spin.

Fine. not for me though

Cringe. It reminded me of a German Electronica musical improv duo I saw once. The duo was amazing, because they were characters in on the joke. This album? Not so much.

Didn't connect with me.

I don’t know… there’s some nostalgia for when I was 14 here but the music is… just not very good

Pure moods?

Extra fuck you for not being on Spotify

Kind of like Massive Attack, I logically get why this was groundbreaking and ahead of its time. But the unfortunate truth of becoming a meme-worthy example of your genre is that it's insanely hard to hear with fresh ears. I just keep picturing the two 90s douche-bros from the SNL skit bobbing their heads as 'What is love?' blares over the speakers. Or the Always Sunny gang in diapers at a rave. It just all sounds a bit cheesy and on the nose - which I get it *didn't* at the time, but can't really get my head around to enjoy now.

#443. I did what I usually do when they're not on Spotify, I found it on YouTube and just skimmed around a little. Didn't seem very interesting to me. 2/5: meh

Disco electro

This was a less fulfilling acid trip

There are other better white rooms. This passed me by when it came out and today it seems rather dated and joyless.

This was hot shit in the early 90s, but it hasn't aged particularly well. 2/5

Sam nie wiem. Niby nic nie drażni, ale też nic nie pamiętam. 2/5

Seems this album isnt on Spotify, so I listened to a playlist someone made to recreate the album as best they could. There is therefore a big ol' asterisk on my review. That said, this is not my thing. I liked the darker, heavier parts. I was picturing myself in a sweaty British 90's rave and that was fun. The vocal samples almost always killed my immersion in those moments. This is not my genre. I've certainly enjoyed this style before, but its rare. This album was not one of those times. Album cover: (B) It definitely captures a mood.

Favorite Track: Build A Fire

The original is not on spotify

Harmitonta taustamusaa eikä tälle oikeastaan edes jaksaisi ajatusta ja keskittymistä tarjota. Ei kummoista.

Jesus. Electronic artists love taking their original album and then changing them completely ruining the historical posterity. Like I’m sure who ever wanted this on the list probably had the 91 version in mind but NOOOO now there’s a new version with the track list completely different. Stupid. Anyway. This is one of the most difficult albums to talk about because the KLF HAS to be on a music list. Read their Wikipedia article. Or watch the This Exists episode about them. They kind of exist as this bizarre art project that makes the most…bafflingly bad Euro trash of all time.

такой тыц-тыц конечно

Never heard this before. Pretty underwhelming. The music is ok but marred by the cringe vocals.

Some of it was fun. Most of it was meh. Beep boop blop.

2.5 stars. Didn't like this. Tried to do too much with too little. Ends up being weird house/trance music.

Peak 90s dance club

Whole album sounds like The Ninja Turtles are about to come out of a steaming manhole ready to rumble vs some Foot soldiers, except when there are vocals. When there are vocals, it sounds like The Ninja Turtles are about to come out of a steaming manhole ready to rumble vs some Foot soldiers but they're inside a GAP store in the mall.

I should really like the KLF. I read Bill Drummond's 17, and even took part in a piece of performance art with the man himself. But I just don't really like the way their music sounds? It's washy and spineless. And I kind of realised that this is a lot like Malcolm McLaren's Duck Rock in that it's taking black voices and making them say words written by a white record producer. Sorry, Bill. I love you, but not your band. x

No longer on Spotify, so I don't like this aspect. Music-wise, I guess it was good considering the time of release, but it didn't really age that well.

Nicht mein Genre, aber ok

This kinda blows.

Лучшая песня - Go To Sleep.

listened to the 2021 Director's Cut available on Spotify sometimes i ponder how British the 1001 albums are gonna be and then i'm generated a record from the lads who gave us "Doctorin' the Tardis" ambient house might not be for me

Not on Spotify but checked it out on YouTube while working It's decent High 2

Couple good tracks, prob would not listen to again, not for me

This was just kinda ‘meh’ right? Like the ‘big beats’ were prob a cool thing in the late 80’s/early 90’s but most of this doesn’t tickle my electro-dance nerve maybe that’s just me….. The opening and closing “Justified and Ancient” bookends were f-ing terrible but the rest of the record was pretty good actually I bet this felt like the world was changing at an illegal outdoor ‘rave’ event in the early 90s though. Like that Aphex Twin guy prob heard plenty of this before he took over the world. One in my listening group said It’s hard to put these records that we’ve largely (or entirely) not heard into the context of their musical contemporaries. Like you said, probably was a bombshell at the time, but music evolving from it was just so much better. Like Run-DMCs first album. I spent the rest of the day listening to Basement Jaxx

I can't get above a 2 here, but I really didn't hate this like I figured I would based on the description.

1st song made me want to go to sleep. Not my jam.

Electrical.. first album not on Spotify. Had to listen via iTunes. Not bad

Somewhat confusing. What mix did I listen to? What version is this? Spotify wasn't terribly clear on the mixes so I kind of dropped out. There is some good material here but there's also stuff with a country twinge that didn't work at all. Not terrible but I can't give it a passing grade either.

Sorry electronica really ain’t my thing

I don’t know if I listened to the right one

Very dated sounding

There was one song I liked I won’t listen to this ever again. Better than most electronics but not enough for me to take notice of anything.

Y'know, there's a time and a place for electronica and I'm starting to think that 7am at home while I'm getting ready for work somehow isn't it. I don't dislike this music genre, it's actually pretty fun and creative, but it certainly does get repetitive after a few tracks. Not my favorite electronica album that I've heard so far, but not bad. I'd rate it somewhere between 2 and 3. It's not as good as Kraftwerk but it was less pretentious than David Holmes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not very good

Day233 - i tried it. i didn’t like it

Sort of enjoyed but became a little monotonous

it was ok.

Not my JAM(s), and don't quite qualify for a Scottish point. I'm sure it was very exciting at the time, but it all comes across very clever-clever, and pretentiously and meticulously planned, in retrospect. Still better than some of the dreck on the list though!

nit auf spotity

No es mi tempo, al poco rato se vuelve repetitivo.

Bits of it I liked. Suited the Europop environment I'm in.

Interesting techno album. These guys are definitely weird. 2.5 stars

Weird directors cut on AM, so annoying when you can't just listen to the original version of an album, or even one where songs aren't chopped or moved around. Consider me peeved. This was alright. I enjoyed that it intermingled with a bunch of different sounds, but I just never got going. One song featured a pedal steel prominently, one had sort of middle eastern vibe, and another had Jamaican. High 2.

Best Song: Last Train to Trancentral. Good house music needs a good chorus, and this one's got it. Worst Song: The White Room. Some of the instrumental interludes came off as more annoying than anything. Overall: Fairly fun and rhythmic, although it frequently dips into that early 90s annoying reliance on echo and reverb. Certainly nothing exciting. Quality really dips off in the latter half too.

En anelse for stenet en gang imellem men ret cool, gjorde ikke nogen fortræd

It's okay. I know I lack the interest (or vocabulary) to talk about albums like this. I did not hate it, but I did not love it either. At the very least I can give it points for not being uber-repetitive, and for having some interesting melodies and vocals here & there.

not for me

Nothing really grabbed my attention, it's perfectly innocuous background music but never rises above that level

A very outrageously 90s album that felt like it was just made for party playlists

It’s fine, definitely 80s club music

Musically a bit disjointed but vocals tie it together reasonably well

So “The White Room” was fine – and considerably better than “Orbital 2” which I had the day before – so there’s that… I’m seeing mentions of UK electronica, Eurodance music, “pop-house”, and other monikers – but at the end of the day, is the music interesting and unique – and on that front, this album is just there for me… Didn’t hate it, but nothing really memorable or intriguing… Best track was “The White Room”, but can’t give the album anything more than a 2…

2.2/5 listened 3x (youtube music - directors cut). a few good songs but didn't love the whole album.

I'm surprised the year this was made. It's straight outta the 70s

My DJ friend tells me this is somehow different and/or more significant and/or better than the average 90s English dance music that one might find on this list. I listened to it all, I don’t think I buy it, it still just sounds like NN TSS NN TSS OI BRUV to me, but I’m giving it an extra star as an act of good faith.

Not really sure what to give this. It’s some early electronic stuff from England so of course it makes this list. Does it actually deserve to, not at all but I didn’t create the list. Anyways this is somewhere between a one and a two. Just early experimental shake your head funky electronic music that I don’t care for. 3.9/10

Generally boring.

Almost, but not quite, entirely not my cup of tea

Ok. A bit boring. Nothing special.

Wasn’t really feeling this, about to out there for me.

Definitely not for me.

Not sure at all what a made of this! Some songs were quite cool and then some were so mad and cringe. Overall I think I was willing it to be over..

A weird one. I don't know a lot about the KLF but I know they were a weird band and did big stunts and burnt a load of money and what not. The book about them is supposed to be really good and I'd like to know more. In terms of music it was not my kind of thing, interesting in places but who knows.

3.5/10

Bescheuerte musik Theyre justified and theyre ancient

More Brit electro pop. Good for a dance party or something I guess, not really my thing.

I never liked this type of music but I didn't mind it here too much.

Well, this one is not on Spotify, but it is on YouTube, so I listened there. I reviewed some other album with a similar feel, but don’t remember what. But it all sounds the same. Great background music for a crowded dance floor at a rave. Pounding, incessant rhythms, shouted vocals. Various boops and beeps. You can certainly move to it. But totally unengaging as music. Nothing memorable, nothing meaningful. 2/5

Pop-rave. It's a cool idea, but to me it comes across as too boring for either

Not my thing

All over the place

Electronic band, that dabbled in dance, hip-hop, etc. Definitely the sound of the early 90’s music and dance scene.

Would have been better if only electronica - lyrics out of place

2 mostly forgettable generic electronic music. Only song that stood out was justified and ancient

In a white room, there’s some music, you forgot it (2.5/5)

electr., dance, 1991 -> 2

Remember back in the early 90's when people still went to roller rinks and they had a shitty DJ playing god knows what? That's what this album is. It's not even well done for what it is. Repetative, irritating, no real instruments, mediocre vocals, and boring all at the same time. Hard pass from me. And, though no fault of the record, not on Spotify so it's a little irritating having to skip through the occasional ad on YouTube. The funny thing about that is there were a couple times I couldn't even tell an ad was playing. That's not what you want from a great record. I have no idea why this album would be included on this list. All that said, I didn't skip any songs and though I was glad it was over, it was not the worst album on this list so far so an extra point for that I guess. 2/5

I…don’t get it. Sounds like pretentious electronic stuff. Bleh.

I really didn’t care for this, but am giving it an extra star because I realize I am not being objective and apparently, this is a really important benchmark for electronic music.

It is just dance music but this time early 90s dance. I mean each decade has it own electronic dance music. I can't say this was any good. I didn't need it. Not sure my there are so many electronic albums on this list. There are worst albums. I will be generous.

I didn't hate this as much as I thought I would. But I did hate it. While the music was alright, these lyrics are... just really awful.

Less punchy than in my memories. Nice universe but too mellow.

Couldn’t access on Spotify

Not on Spotify. Going by other stuff I've heard of theirs I'll say 2.5

I don't hate it, but it's hideously dated, and generally kind of rubbish.

A bit dull. None of the vitriol or passion of the KLF I knew.

No toda la música está hecha para mí. Fue interesante

The only thing anyone knows about the KLF is that they once burned £1,000,000. Being generous, you could say the music is energetic and fun, but I think really it's quite bad 90s electronica. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: Justified and Ancient Date listened: 12/03/24

That was bizarre, but disappointing. Music was mediocre early UKs raver scene, with a few very self indulgent dubbed vocals. The wiki page on this band though was an absolute wild read. Music didn't live up to the heights I was expecting based on this sadly.

Beep boo boo bop boo boo bop

I wonder if that's what Michael Vsauce felt when he was in the white room. At least it's not 2 hours long.

Elektronica fra 90’erne, ok, men ikke noget at råbe hurra for

It was difficult to find this album but I eventually did locate it on YouTube. Track #4 had strong Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch vibes about it. What time does "My So-Called Life" start tonight? It has those vibes to me. This is the third day in a row that I have been given mostly instrumental or techno-ish music to listen to. So, I'm ready to move on to a different genre. This is peak "British guy whispers while a beat goes on in the background as a female sings a chorus as an interlude," and I'm here for it. Meaning, I'm here literally listening to it, because that's all I can say. Did I enjoy it? I can't say I did, but I also didn't hate it because I also spent much of my teen years in GAP and American Eagle shopping.

Last track was alright. All rather boring to me otherwise.

very of an era, but not too shabby!

Nah 2/5

Another electronica album, another snoozer. Seriously, this genre of music has to be the kind that ages the worst. This wasn't great and screamed 1990 and stayed there. 4/10

Every 90s movie montage was set to one of these tracks.

When this came out it fell into a category of music I called "Eurodisco," which my local "Alternative" station played so much of I actually wrote them a letter telling them if they didn't STOP DOING THAT I would be forces to take my business elsewhere and I MEAN IT! Wll, of course they didn't, I did and neither of us missed each other for a tenth of a second. I hear this now as a frequent listener of electronic music and it has a... quaintness. It's kind of weak, still, and relies too heavily on dance styles that wouldn't be native to the Isles (mostly Acid House). Influential, not very underground, it lacks depth, and I found it to be kind of boring. But like I said, in my younger days when I would have been the audience for this, I absolutely abhorred this kind of music. Given that, it wasn't unpleasant or challenging and definitely has some fun moments. Also cool to see some EDM finally on this list!

With no prior knowledge of The KLF, I was at first saddened to learn it was a dance record, then intrigued because it was a little bit more than a dance record, but then saddened again because it's not much more than a dance record.

onnodig elektronisch?

This definitely has that 90s sound...not my style but I still want to swing my head around to this.

Could only stream The Director’s Cut which was extremely mellow compared to the incendiary hit singles. Not sure if the original album release is like those singles, but this was disappointing. Some songs were like poor man’s West End Girls and weak Cafe Del Mar tunes.

one joke

Fine, good even, but I really don't think I needed to hear it. There are way too many generically good albums on this list. I would cheerfully grant four stars if this was album was offered as the best of its genre, which it might be I don't know, but it isn't the only British electronica on the list or even the only British electronica offered to me this week. Enough already.

Somebody please, KiLF me. I hate this shit. Cool album cover though, they nailed that part.

I get that this is influential for its time, but I doubt I’ll listen again. Had some good grooves but felt repetitive after awhile.

No my kind of music.

Niet zo zeer m'n ding

I’m sure it’s a good jam if you like the computer beats and the digital sound. It’s alright. Got my toe taping once. Mostly just in the ear and out.

As boring and bland as ypu might imagine

2/5. Standard 90s house album with nothing redeeming. Reminded me of a less sophisticated DJ Shadow.

Not on spotify. Prolly shit

Reading about the group and the things around it were more interesting than the music it self. typical 90s electronica/rave music. it is made for clubs and it don't really stand out to me.

Honestly just straight up not my music at all. This sort of electronic music that sounds like you absolutely have to be in a dirty night club somewhere in England drugged out your mind is exclusively unappealing to me. I was pretty primed to give this a 1/5. HOWEVER. I couldn't help myself by looking into this band thinking "Why in god's name is this included in this list". So after a bit of reading found these two guys to be probably quite the legends in the UK. Including them being a part of some art exhibit where they legitimately burned "a million quid" which would be worth like 5 million Canadian dollars now, all from the after tax profits of their record sales. That's pretty bad ass. In that tune they do sound like true artists, combining that with the fact that they have quite a big legacy and inspiration on this genre of music. So - hats off to them. By the end of reading up on them I did find myself vibing to the latter part of this album, so although I'll never listen again, it gets a 2.

Most of these songs were too repetitive for me. The production sounds cold and impersonal. I was charmed by the inclusion of pedal steel guitar on a couple of the tracks, but perhaps only because it contrasted so starkly with the rest of the instrumentation.

Far more intrigued by their story than their sound.

When I told Rach I’d been generated The KLF, she started waiting something about Moo Moo Land. That oddity isn’t in this album, but by icky thump that was a right weird experience being serenaded with that. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Make It Rain, Build A Fire, Justified & Ancient I listened to this on another commute to work today. It definitely made the journey more fun, although I’m unsure about if I’ll be returning to it again. It somehow managed to be a bit of fun, yet remained fairly unremarkable. There’s not much I really feel I can comment on aside from it being party pop, or something like that. It isn’t bad by any means, and I’d enjoy if it came on the radio, but I wouldn’t seek this out.

Early house music. Needed more Martha Wash and electric piano. I’m sure it was impactful in its time but it’s giving Mortal Kombat.
