A lot of variety.

<<a banda mais importante do punk americano>>
классный инструментал бро
Not even Pere Ubu's best album. I love this.
I respect it for its influence and musical skill but this is literal clown music. Like clowns do shows at carnivals to this music.
Like a dubbier Talking Heads on a bad trip. Only ever heard The Modern Dance by Pere Ubu before (which bangs), this is still pretty damn good - don't listen to the naysayers
Abrasive, rough and epic
Super cool Andy music, major vibes
What a bizarre record. Splashes of Television and Talking Heads, then veers way off into experimental wilderness. Not bad.
Enjoyed this a lot, felt like it grew as the album went on. The penultimate track was a highlight.
Never heard of this band before. Quite enjoyed it but don't think I will revisit.
I can see how the sound this band created influenced music - whether directly or indirectly. Made me think of Modest Mouse and TV on the radio. While the vocals can be off-putting at times - I recognize that is the point. Love the music
Alternately very interesting musically and annoying. Enjoyed listening to this just to hear which direction they would go next.i don't think I'll be listening to this again, but it was a very fascinating listen.
Not bad
Found this a grower and I liked the creativity and a lot of what the band is doing. The singing is mostly pretty dreadful but by design I guess and I didn’t mind it (the tuneful backing vocals provide a nice contrast too at times).
It's like the Talking Heads crossed with Captain Beefheart. I was only familiar with their debut album. This is more less punky and that doesn't lend well to his vocals sometimes. Unhinged, slightly irritating at times, but truly original, fun and inventive.
Twitchy but engaging
I would like it more with a different singing style I think. But overall still very enjoyable
A little crunchy but in a good way
Första intrycket var inte så bra, men som helhet hade det ändå mycket eget och kreativt som höll mig intresserad.
Lite muppigt men kul!
It's so UGLY, I love it. Its weird, yet melodic. The exclamation point in Thriller! means you're in for a fucked up ride. Noise! Noise! Noise! In a bizarrely satisfying way. 3
I was familiar with Pere Ubu so I knew what I was in for. Yep. It was that.
Good
I experienced a row of experimental albums and I am getting tired
Rare case of a singer impairing a good band for me
Very unusual with elements of a bop but I can't move past the voice.
🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑 Once again dumbfounded by how much this album upset everyone listening. From the reviews you'd think this was ten hours of chainsaw revving, orgasms, and chewing noises interspersed with dissonant choral harmonies. With the exception, I gotta admit, of "Thriller!" (which did not earn its exclamation point) and "Blow Daddy-O," this wasn't really all that avant-garde. Squirrelly, maybe, but really only like 20% more than, say, Television (which I think is the missing soundalike to balance out everyone's Talking Heads take). Much as I feel that reactionary urge, I'm not gonna give it five stars or anything to balance everybody out—I thought it was cool, fun, and inventive, but it's not something I think I'd revisit. There were three or so songs I liked where their groove cut through the dissonance, and there were also songs I actively disliked because it felt like they were trying too hard to be obnoxious (whatever that drunken sailor business was). Absolutely worthwhile inclusion, and not something to get anyone's feathers ruffled over. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing
Better than expected!
I dig it
Some truly odd shit going on in this album. Scratches and wails. “Thriller!” could’ve been written for an A24 horror flick and fit right in. Weirdly catchy in parts, despite the chaos
Vage hippe punk ofzo
We have had albums on here that mix sound bites (DJ Shadow) into music, and we've had the synth playground (Kraftwerk) as well and now there is this! I remember on those former albums, it was somewhat of a challenge to absorb at first, but ultimately welcome. I think the reason they can appeal is if the musicality comes out and the silly sound doesn't. Bending notes and hitting keys that seem chaotic just to jolt you seems to be the main aim of Dub Housing. "Drinking Wine Spodyody" that was a little odd and a little too far down the demented garden path for me (giving it the beans on the haunted, strained vocals). Like those other albums mentioned, I came to really enjoy this and appreciate the musicality in its unconventional form. All the things I like about deeper music are there; they have just found the manic fringes to leverage for their vision of it. Nice one, I quite enjoyed flirting with this one and a true 1001 classic I hope for along the way. I think I and the rest of my house are pleased it leans more instrumental than vocal!
Ok so this is one of the weird ones. But the question is, is it good weird or bad weird? My first thoughts were pretty positive. It's not all just weird noises and and self indulgence, there is something more in this that warrants a closer listen. It is a bit of a fever dream and puts me in mind of "The Prisoner" and other physiological thrillers. There is some jazz in there and some rock and roll, potentially even proto-punk. I didn't find it a very pleasurable listen, for the most part, and can't see myself returning for many repeats. But it's the sort of thing I quite like listening to once. It's like a piece of modern art you stand and look at in a gallery and then shudder and walk away.
Enjoyed some song, disliked others. The definition of a solid 3.
I see the name, I think ahhh fuck it’s going to be some French bullshit. Side note, I hate the French. Then I see the album name and I think, dub music? Ok I can handle that. Then I go onto Spotify and I see the band photo of a bunch of old as balls people and I think, fuck me, this is going to be some folky trash. Nah It’s like kinda punk Kinda experimental pop. Sort of Talking Heads sounding. I mean, so far. This is just weird enough to work for me. Is it a greatest album of all time? Hell no. Should I be expected to listen to it? Yes, I’ll give it that. This is a weird album. There’s no radio friendly hit. Nothing to catch your attention other than the oddities of the album. Sort of off key singing and topics that don’t really matter. I’m ok with this. It was not a time waster.
Surprisingly accessible for the kinda avant garde punk that it is. Why is this working for me? I guess groove really is king, that's what is definitely present on all of the tracks.
I get why this album scares many away. It’s experimental, raw, and weird. I think Peru Zuni is better explored through one of their live albums or a compilation.
It was fine
Against all common sense, I sort of liked it. Grating, out of tune (or maybe microtonal), and with vocals that make Dylan sound like Pavarotti, it was still fun and made me smile. Each track made me eager to find out what fresh hell they would send me to next. That’s something. Call it a palate cleanser between meticulously crafted Brit Pop albums.
Album #86, Pere Ubu, Dub Housing, ⭐⭐⭐ I’m a huge fan of The Modern Dance by Pere Ubu. I would say it’s consistently in my top ten favourite albums, which would fluctuate all the time, but that one is probably one of the most rock steady in my list. It just feels like a mesh of all my favourite kinds of music with a kind of punky energy. I listen to it regularly and rarely skip a track when it comes up. But I’ve struggled big time with their follow-up album, Dub Housing. It was released the same year as The Modern Dance, and it kind of feels like more of an outtakes album. I don’t think that’s actually true, but that’s what it feels like. Virtually every song pales in comparison. On its own merits though, it’s still good. It’s very, very weird. It’s like a less tuneful Talking Heads doing a few Can covers. Again, it’s a mix of styles, Beefheart, post punk, sea shanties, krautrock, and of course dub. It’s just odd. Some tracks are good, but it lacks hooks. The Modern Dance had a certain pop sensibility, but this doesn’t. I struggle to remember a lot of the tracks. But there’s a great drunken, chaotic vibe to the whole thing, and it does sound ahead of its time. It doesn’t hold a candle to its predecessor, but it’s still a unique and worthwhile album.
The first two tracks are electrifying. It sounds like a nightmare in the best way. You want it to keep going to see how crazy it gets. And then it doesn’t. It just sort of hovers between interesting and mind numbing. How many weird sounds can we do? Less! You should have done less!
Ça change mais chéper un peu quand même
M’en souviens pas
An absolutely chaotic and frantic album. Not entirely sure what was going on but whatever was going on kept me intrigued throughout. Favorite song ‘on the surface’ I think this song summed up the random chaotic world of the album perfectly. Worst track- ‘blow daddy O’ I think this is where the ideas had finally became too weird 😂 Not entirely sure how to rate it as I don’t actually think it was good- or was it, I can’t make up my mind but I’m edging on the side of like so for that it has to be a 6/10
3.5 challenging in entertaining ways
This isn't as good as The Modern Dance but its interesting enough to be enjoyable for the short runtime.
Lots of good ideas. Some I like. Some I don't. Suspect it was more auead of it's time than I can give it credit for.
how to describe this? fun noise. don't know if I'd relisten but it's certainly different in a way I respect
great band. enjoyed this
Once you get used to his voice it is great. More Krautrock than Punk.
Au risque de me répéter, l'avant-garde rock c'est pas trop ma tasse de thé. Je comprends l'intérêt mais ça me semble très noisy et aléatoire.
Dur à dire. Ça m’a laissé plutôt indifférent.
i was sooooo hopeful the songs would start out great but the singing? guys it sounded like a chicken was trying its best this is what i feel people who don’t like rock assume all rock songs are
I liked this more than I was expecting to. Enjoyed the music but I wasn't a big fan of his vocal style. I don't think I would listen to it again, I find the singing too difficult to listen to, but I did enjoy some of the songs. Fav song: (Pa) Ubu Dance Party Least fav: Codex
Somehow a combo of Baz Lerman and Iggy Pop
I'm all for musical visionaries who strike on their own path, but there comes a time when the music can seem like introspective noodling. Even when it's as noisy and intense as David Tomas and Pere Ubu. The Modern Dance will always have a place in my heart, but Dub Housing....Meh. Listened to it today, and it just didn't inspire me.
Do not know if I really like it or really dislike it.
I like how David Thompson always sounds afraid. I wish he had toned it down on some tracks.
Slightly chaotic
intruiging with a David Byrne vibe
crazy album. it was a lot but also pretty good. very interesting
3.3/5 some weird stuff but good
Not sure what to make of that. Didn't hate it, didn't really like it. Will go 2.5 rounded up.
A bit ridiculous but for some reason made me smile
It's quit crazy and all over the place, but also very fun. I'm really enjoying it for a first listen. 3 and 4 are great songs. And thriller doesn't sound like a thriller, more like a parody of a thriller. Still, for a nonsense track it's fun in a way. It has a bit of a captain beefheart vibe to it. I'm all for it. 7 is a highlight. Blow Daddy-O is a bit too much, though. Codex is really great. A dark closer. Very cool indeed. I think it's a solid fun 3
Not as good as the modern dance, the vocals at some point just get to be too much but I liked a good amount of the songs and the instrumentation is rather well done
Interesting, but not my cup of tea. I can see how some folks might enjoy it, though.
divisa tra il fatto che alcuni pezzi sono davvero belli, altri difficili da ascoltare per intero
Non l’ho finito ma si capisce l’avsnguardia musicale
Decent post punk sounding album, plenty of jagged energy and weird vibes, and I get why people are into it. It just didn’t stick with me. I’m glad I heard it, but it’s not something I’ll be actively listening to again.
David Thomas' vocals never fail to make me giggle. Great band, terribly underrated.
this album is so wild, oh my god. i love how crazy it is?! really haven't heard anything like it, especially from this era. solid 3.5/5 i think.
This is a really hard one to rate. It definitely is its own thing and genre. There are surprisingly some good moments in here while also being very difficult to listen to. This is the most conflicting album yet, I don’t hate it, but I also really don’t like it.
Gotta give it to Pere Ubu, it's experimental, fun, bizarre, incomprehensible at times. All things I enjoy hearing, and I can't help but have a soft spot for this album. It's not going to be an immediate favourite but it was a lot of fun and I'll definitely revisit this one. Favourites: Navvy I, Will Wait Drinking Wine Spodyody
not as interesting as the other pere ubu album on the list but not bad
Pere Ubu is still just so weird to me. And I applaud them for it. This sounds like nothing else. I just don't like it as much. Some really cool parts but this album (and band) just continuely confuse me
I think I like this one just slightly more than their debut. More dance-y, but still in a very discordant way. It's definitely not for everyone, with the yelping vocals and strange songwriting, but it's really cool once you give in to its eccentricities. Key tracks: On the Surface Ubu Dance Party
Average to me
The voice reminds me of if justified Roiland (rick and morty) could sing, but it’s post punk so I can get past that, some of it is quite good then it’s too weird and unsettling and it takes you out 3/5
I get why someone would be fascinated by this, very quirky but the vocals are not for me. Love the instrumental tho.
There's some interesting artistry going on here, Codex particularly stands out, but I do wish there was less high pitched wailing.
Uh… I have no idea what to say about this one honestly. I think it’s cool that it’s here, but i doubt I ever wanna listen to this again.
Post-punk before punk is quite an achievement. I'm not sure that this is their best album, but really interesting.
There are the Talking Heads I really like. There’s finally some warmth, more garage dirt in the mix, and it grooves hard while still going slightly off the rails in the best way. I only knew them by reputation, so this feels like a really cool late discovery. I can hear traces of stuff I love, Pixies for sure, maybe others, and that alone makes it exciting. Definitely makes me want to dig deeper, the intro od I, will wait will haunt me for quite a long time. On the down side, and even thought the voice didn’t bother me at first listen, I’m not sure I can keep up with it… and the few songs are a bit too experimental for my taste. But let’s try anyway!
Surely everyone has heard the so-called "new wave of post-punk"? Yes, yes, be it the now-hyped Geese, a slightly toned-down Black Country, New Road, or, at worst, Sorry. Many people like it, but for me, it almost always comes off as pompous and pretentious. The most interesting thing is that a band I hadn't heard before, Pere Ubu, made similar music almost forty years ago. The same rather jagged guitars, the same abundance of unusual instruments and noises, the same declarations instead of singing. What's even more interesting is that I rather liked this album! They're certainly overdoing it with the experimentalism in places, but for the most part, it's decent post-punk, very unusual for its time. True, sometimes you still can't tell if it's the music playing in your headphones or a snowplow humming outside your window; however, that's par for the course for the genre.
Post-punk is so interesting because there was this entire period of time, once punk had broken down so many musical barriers, when bands were trying to be weird just to be weird, and were trying to out-weird each other. And each band was trying to be weird in different ways. But it all comes out sounding- well- weird! Pere Ubu is absolutely in that vein. Gimmicky and subversive. I don’t mind it though. Sufficiently weird. THREE STARS
Sorry for listening to the schizophrenic mormon music in a more complex and nuanced way than everyone else. I guess I'm just chill like that.
Quite interesting, the lead singer's voice is unique and not for everyone.
Nice and experimental
Weird on first listen but enticing, could see it higher on second listen.
Some of the random noises killed it for me. But there are high moments like ‚I will wait‘
I don't hate it, but not a lot to really grab me here.
I had listened to The Tenement Years and Terminal Tower, so I had some idea of what I was getting into, but I'm still a little punch drunk. I listened to this album twice, but I'm pretty sure I would need to listen to this 3 or 4 more times to really accurately understand it. I'm ok with the warbling vocals and the general weirdness, but probably could use some more hooks somewhere. I really liked (Pa) Ubu Dance Party, in particular, and generally that they bring elements of the 70s to 70s post-punk music which often sounds entirely outside of its era. Also, listen to On the Surface and tell me Modest Mouse sounds like it does without Pere Ubu.
i don't hate it as much as i thought i would. but i am also a fan of noise and drone rock so.
Album #1,018 Weird, but interesting stuff. The singer seems to be a cross between Peter Gabriel and David Byrne with a little Tiny Tim thrown in. This was worth a listen for sure. Would I want to revisit it? Well...maybe not.
huh
Yes, this is something special. And very creative. I don't like it, but at least it is something new and worth listening to (and that is not the case with so many albums on this list).
Interesting instrumental with different styles in it, not really my style but still great
certainly interesting
Talking Heads meets Primus, it was ok, got a bit too abrasive for me, pretty forward thinking for 1978.
Weird post-punk vibes. Like a fucked-up Talking Heads. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 187 Already owned : 43 Purchased : 8 To buy list : 4 Nope : 132
Very interesting sounding album, codex was a catchy outro
I want to really like it. I probably will in a few more listens. It won’t be a favorite, but it is an enjoyable use of my 30 minutes on New Year’s Eve.
An interesting one
Never head of Pere Ubu so was a new experience - all be it initially disappointing due to insufficient dub. Its a short listen so was able to crack through a few times and there are a few cracking tracks - like Navv and On the surface. The shouted vocals are mostly annoying and get in the way. I am feeling grumpy today so the avante garde stylings are mostly getting on my tits. 3 feels a bit mean but not sure will rush back.
On the Surface, this seemed alright. But when you read the Codex, Blow Daddy-O!
With no priors I expected this to be a dub album by a Nigerian artist. I was then immediately surprised it was post punk and a bit new wave (Talking Heads). And I liked it. And gradually I liked it less as it went along. I wanted Codex to be over. BUT I think I could like it more if I tried again. And maybe I would one day. So low 3.
The first notes of the album I thought - oh am I gonna like this? Then the singing started and I thought otherwise - but then throughout the rest of the album it grew on me! Definitely not just something to casually put on but I kinda liked it at times
Some of the reviews are way too harsh. I would listen to it again.
Hard but interesting listen. Didn't know Jehovas witnesses made music like this! So this album taught me something new. Will probably never listen again, but if someone asked me to give them a weird and unique album, I might recommend this one
Not that bad, kinda weird, but it sounded super important to me for all the New Wave movement that followed. Surprisingly and strangely fun, but not that essential to me.
Very weird. Denk dat ik het live best leuk zou vinden
Wild stuff!
Listening to this and trying to tell myself to put rating to music just makes my brain functions stop and my eyes go crosseye, but I think I like it and respect it, if not quite to 4/5 level These alcoholically-rambled guitar-scribbled confusion songs are the music of influence and progress, long may they live
Pretty wild tho
Ну, эмм, это не лучший их альбом. Но окэй. Лучшая песня - On the Surface.
"Not my cup of tea" doesn't seem quite right, as I oscillate between my feelings on this album I hear strokes of bands I adore intertwined in this album. I can hear the influences to and from things like the Pixies and Velvet Underground in form, or Talking Heads and The Raincoats in style. All things I like without a doubt. It's hard to say I like this just as much as it's hard to say I don't. Whatever rating I decide on, it won't be directly comparable to anything else I place in the same category as if it almost deserves a totally separate rating system. Not to sound insanely stuck up but I'd say this album is only a "must listen" if you care about the genres it's in or the genres that come directly after. Is it interesting and experimental and well deserving of its place in music history? Absolutely. Does that mean that by modern standards it's an easy listen everyone should do once? Maybe not.
Kinda liked it. Not enough to give a 4, tgough
Nothing special 3/5
This is weird and experimental but it’s not for me. I like how upbeat it is therefore I’m giving it an extra star because I appreciate the risk taking. I wonder how Bad Brains felt about this band.
Veel desonancie, gekke klanken en express contradictie. Wel intresant om te hebben geluisterd
There was no Dub or Housing in this album. It may as well have been called Jazz Camping.
I listened to this twenty years ago I’m not sure I enjoyed it as much as I did previously
This album wasn't bad, but perhaps my perspective was skewed by the Butthole Surfers album that preceded it, which makes anything else seem Grammy worthy.
Another band I've never listened to before. Their manager apparently said “Look, record two more records like this, and you’ll be big stars.” Hmmm.... I like the guy's screeching, and the drone and feedback bits obviously Velvet inspired like Blow Daddy-O, but the interesting bits don't quite make up for the anti-music tracks like Thriller!. Still, much rather this that a double album of Clapton.
That was some delightful weirdness
I thought this was fine
It’s cool but not loving it. I think if I wanted this kind of music, I’d just listen to Television
Decent
so fucking weird and cool, I like it! ——————————— Added to Liked Songs Playlist: — Thriller!; — (Pa) Ubu Dance Party; — Codex;
Taste the beefheart
Really weird, I can kinda get down for some of it Will I listen to again: 38%
Goid
Decent enough album. Some great tracks on here, others not so great. Nothing terrible though
Good, interesting, will need more listens to fully appreciate but I can sense the significance of this record as a future influence.
Quite noisy, although I can see it being ahead of its time when it came out. Nothing special though, seemed like an experimentation rather than something with motive behind it.
I have a soft spot for Avant Garde music, but I did not really click with this one. It sounded really smoothly sloppy, which isn't something I look for but was very well executed. I spent a lot of time not listening to this album because I didn't want to sit down and dedicate the energy to do it. I appreciate that they came up with something strange and original.
Only heard their other album on this list before. It's weird but good, might listen to this again and rate it higher.
I can see why this album was very influential and parts of it were excellent, but it was a tough listen at times, chaotic and mangled. Good to experience it though
75% Best: Navvy; Dub Housing; I, Will Wait Must-Hear? Nah
Well it’s certainly different.
Great Songs: Dub Housing, Caligari's Mirror, I, Will Wait! Good Songs: Navvy, On the Surface, (Pa) Ubu Dance Party, Codex Mid Songs: Thriller!, Drinking Wine Spodyody, Blow Daddy-O Bad Songs:
Never heard of this band so was excited to get something new on here! Really enjoyed several songs but also really hated several. I appreciate how weird and experimental it is. Can definitely hear how this was an influential underground/punk sound that crossed into several other bands. I think I enjoyed the front half more than the back half on this one. Thriller! Is where it starts to turn a bit for me.
Super interesting music. Horrible singer. I'd love this album in a karaoke version OR re-recorded with another singer. (Which makes "Blow Daddy-O" a winner here. Almost every song has cool bass lines, interesting guitar flairs, and/or interesting keyboard choices. Sometimes his voice is tolerable, but mostly he's yelling, kind of screechy, or leaning into sounding weird on purpose. Weird is good, trying hard to seem weirder plays badly. I'd really like to hear this again, but I don't know if I can abide his yowling. Want to give this a 4 for the music and a 1 for the vocal stylings. I'm going to be generous and give it a 3. I can see why some people would love it.
Enjoyed this. I’d heard it previously but never really connected with them, but this is a good album. Original and odd. Interested to hear more and investigate them again.
Out there, unique and an interesting experience. I enjoyed the album as a whole, nothing really stood out though and gripped me. Could benefit from another listen
Insane asylum music. Someone needs to give the singer his meds and stop shaking him. I think this is awful while at the same time think its great. Is it loud, obnoxious and too experimental? Yes. Is it also kind of catchy, interesting and experimental? Also Yes. I would take this over some generic 70s rock band or the 8th album by a mega hit artist anyday. 6/10
Influential post punk album, but perhaps mostly an artifact of its time
Not my thing
Okay, I get why others hate it, but its funky and weird and I kinda liked it. The vocals are strange, but i like a lot of the melodies and little musical phrases. I'm not going to go back and listen to this a bunch, but I can appreciate it.
I tried to come at this one with an open mind and feel like it definitely benefited from a second listen. As someone who is a fan of some music with non-traditional/out-there vocals, I actually found the utter uniqueness of his approach to be pretty amazing and like nothing else I've ever heard (some David Byrne parallels in his weirder moments maybe?) This band is rightly lauded as a pioneer of "art punk" and although it's really hard to find any super direct influences, there are for sure seeds of this in later indie rock bands that I can think of like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. It's a weird unsettling soundscape in parts, but also has some very cool musical moments behind it that feel a bit more straightforward. Caligari's Mirror is a standout for me - the deranged delivery, the drunken sailor chorus overlaid on an almost Skynyrd-like riff, I loved it actually. Trying to sort of keep my ratings in context and I'm not sure I'd quite go 4 but found this a super interesting listen.
El anterior fué mejor. Pero siempre lo aprecio. Nota: 3.0
Their second album. Rock / Post Punk. Well this is a whacky one. Weird and wonderful. On The Surface was my favourite track. Imagine going to see these guys live in 78 ! That would have been an experience. The album is definitely a cacophony of sound. I like it. Disjointed and unusual but I did feel like a I went on a cool 35min journey. Fun ! Also some excellent musicianship and production at times.
I'm sure there are those who like this as their go-to listening. Couldn't be me. I appreciate the "art" of this and I can hear the influence it's had on stuff that came later and I get the individualism of the work. But I can't see this being a style I gravitated towards.
Unclear why this is on this list. Not unlistenable but not particularly engaging either
I found this interesting and I was in the right mood for the listen. However, in reflection I am unlikely to pick this up and listen again. Likely an ancestor of some of the music I enjoy more. 3.5 but on the three side.
Interesting stuff. Not my typical lane in Post Punk, but still a worthwhile listen. 3.5/5
They have a sound and quality that could've been created at any point in time, so it's even more bizarre that this album was from a band from Cleveland in the late 70's.
Interesting album. Liked it more than I expected.
Zuhause, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Viele Höhen, aber auch abgründige Tiefen.
What a trip. Postpunk/artpunk/proto-new wave? Några bra låtar, men otroligt experimentellt. Vissa låtar var mest ljud, andra var rätt poppiga istället. Otroligt revolutionerande för sin tid antagligen
This is Pere Ubu's second album in this project. I feel the same way about it as I did about the first one. There are a few interesting pieces on the album. But overall it's too exhausting for me. Do I want to listen to it again? Rather no. Therefore 3/5
A rendition of Art Rock that at first I didn't quite understand, but the late songs made me comprehend the project as a whole. It's not perfect, but definitely a worth listen if you want to indulge into a more obscure experimental scene. 3.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐1/2
Interesting record
Surprising, enjoyed this more than the last album I generated by these guys. Fewer weird siren sounds, few good tunes
Guitar heavy experimental rock; good for listening to while working on projects.
Fav: Caligari’s Mirror Least Fav: Navvy Well this time I was sober for the Pere Ubu album, and I enjoyed it just as much as the other so it’s a 3/5. Expected some unintelligible experimental nonsense and it was actually only somewhat like that
I remember when my cool friend played this for me, and I dug at least some of it. But now it frightens my dog.
This is my 500th album on this project. While not every day has been rewarding, this has been a fascinating adventure to explore into the vast worlds of modern music. Coming in I had a very deep knowledge of music released since the 90’s, but outside of famous singles, very little knowledge of albums prior to that. I vastly prefer listening to full albums, how each track flows into the next, and hearing bands that influenced the music that I love. It can be absolutely fascinating to hear a record that you might not love, but can so clearly see as a record that influenced one you do. That was the case with Pere Ubu. Would I throw this on in my own time? No. Do I see the Rosetta Stone for other Post-Punk bands I adore? Absolutely. And that’s why I’m still sticking with this project. I hate my commute some mornings when I’m on the subway and experiencing some prog rock nightmare. But when this project rewards it feels like all of these excessive hours are worth it. 3/5
It was good and had its moments but was not for me
I was annoyed at first but in the end it was ok indie rock, I guess. 2.5 rounding up
Kind of insane, kind of amazing. Always been fascinated by music that sounds nothing like what "good music" is supposed to sound like but still has an undeniable appeal to it. This certainly fits that mold.
Some interesting grooves and some very annoying stuff too haha.
interesting...
It grew on me quite a bit, a little odd tho
Great Odin's Beard! What sonic devilry is this? This was a challenging listen but somehow very captivating, and yes, at times, oddly enjoyable, even compelling. 3⭐ for the audacity of it. Would I buy this album? No Would I listen again? Probably not! 1. "Navvy" – 3 2. "On the Surface" – 3 3. "Dub Housing" – 3 4. "Caligari's Mirror" – 3 5. "Thriller!" – 3 6. "I, Will Wait" – 3 7. "Drinking Wine Spodyody" – 3 8. "(Pa) Ubu Dance Party" – 3 9. "Blow Daddy-O" – 3 10. "Codex" – 3 Total - 30 Average - 3.0
Not my cup of tea but was at least interesting
Je feelais pas le Talking Heads su'l crack.
didn't really understand their previous album but it definitely trained my ears for this one. I enjoyed like a little more Its an interesting listen, there's some cool shit on here. the vocalist on here is fucking nuts, I've heard very few vocalists as manic he is its crazy.
👍
Un peu trop experimental pour moi parfois mais pas mal
Do we need two Pere Ubu albums in this list? (No). Are Pere Ubu best represented by their early singles rather than albums? (Yes). Does this album deserve to be in the bottom 1% of ratings on this site? (No). I reckon if I heard this at the time it would garner a 5 from me, listening now I’ll give it a 3.
Freaky stuff from the Crocus & pals. Used to love this. Find it hard to listen to these days. Ultimate example of a band that should only have one album on this list. I'm becoming a broken record but it does piss me off. If you've heard of less than 500 bands, maybe you're not qualified to narrow down the must hears.
Can't convince me they're not from across the pond and that the whole album is english language but pretty neat to give a one time listen to
I can see how much it influenced a lot of bands I love, although I find it painful to listen to. I read one read one review that referred to it as "assaultive" and I'd have to agree, but it also said they had the vision to push boundaries, which I also agree with. I don't want to hear it again but I appreciate that it paved the way for others.
It's a very generous 3 stars from me. This music is alternative, weird, very capitain beefheart-inspired. Not for your average music listener, this will challenge your ear drums. I liked a couple of the songs but I can take most of them or leave them. I'm not sure Dub Housing is the best Pere Ubu album to start with either. The Modern Dance is much better.
80’s new wave
More like 2.5
Looks like this one came out in the same calendar year as the last. We'll see if it holds as much of my interest. Navvy sounds a bit like Devo. Not bad, but not a great opener imo. On the Surface redeems nicely. Still has a certain Devo-esq feel about it, but fused with psychedelic influences (organ sound really) and a vaguely Byrne-like vocal delivery. I really enjoy the dilapidated sound of Caligari's Mirror, though the vocals are pretty awful in sections. Thriller! makes me feel like I'm slipping into insanity. Drinking Wine Spodyody is a fun little bop. Generally I did not find this album nearly as enjoyable as The Modern Dance. Seems they leaned further into being weird, and further away from writing solid songs. For me this is a high 2 - low 3.
I had a little more fun with that one from Pere Ubu. More catchy, yet more experimental and weird. The ace tone organ always felt right. That said, I don't think I'll ever be a fan of them.
A little weird but I like weird. Although I don’t think much of my listen will stick with me
Infinitely better than the first Pere Ubu album I got. This one contains actual music! The dude’s voice is so terrible though.
I will never like his vocals, but this is strangely less difficult than their follow up The Modern Dance. That’s all relative though. This is still startlingly experimental and ahead of its time. It sounds like if Talking Heads made a horror film soundtrack. Uncomfortable pace and style shifts, absurdist lyrics and constant discord. This is music that demands to be listened to. At its best it’s brilliant. What I can’t get over is the album release date. It sounds so modern to me, like it was made 20 years later. To my ears this sounds like deconstructed post punk. Strong 3
Surely a big influence on talking heads. Manages to be extremely odd but very listenable. A creative tour de force.
Relative to other post-punk bands this is a very eccentric album, though in the context of Pete Ubu this is a pretty sober and subdued follow up to The Modern Dance. There are two epic hits in the form of Navvy and On the Surface which will definitely be in my regular rotation, but the album as a whole is strong. It’s like listening to an evil Talking Heads. It’s interesting to hear them present themselves as a slightly more conventional rock band (again, this is all relative). I’m sure this different mode will be an improvement for some but for me gives the debut the slight edge.
had a lot of fun w this record : ) played it a number of times w mike in the car driving up to Bari, now it has new meaning : ) yeah!!! Pere Ubuuuuu !!! you really can hear like 9 different bands who were influenced by them while you listen
How this sounds like David Byrne covering Bloc Party I don't know
Falopa total, no me cierra del todo la voz pero musicalmente tiene cositas interesantes. Es el primer disco, por lo que el segundo (con muchas mas escuchas) me da intriga. Habrá que escucharlo. Codex mi favorita, temazo.
I liked the drunken sailor song a lot! I don't know why this is so disliked. It's kinda fun. Prob a 2.5 for me but I'll bump it to a 3 to boost the average.
Alrifht
Good, but nothing stood out as beyond amazing. 3.5/5
The lead singer's style of singing is pretty difficult to get into, but I really appreciate the frantic aspect about it. The backing track matches the vocals quite well; just pure frenzy, which fits the garage/punk attitude of the singing.
Half is good. The other half is dumb. Ez 3
An album that on the surface i should enjoy because of the genres. But i couldnt get into this. Their previous album "The Modern Dance" is actually a lot better. 6/10 Favourite: Navvy Least Favourite: Codex
Decent but The Modern Dance was better.
I’m getting Pixies vibes
This is one of those albums where all of the songs on the album are all equally as played as each other. So when people listen, they listen to the whole album. That's a good sign IMO This album is pretty amazing. I don't want to really hear it again, even in my more adventurous days I probably wouldn't have been very into it. But I'm happy it exists and someone gave them money to keep going.
I am three tracks in, and I am enjoying this more than I thought I would. The lyrics and vocals are annoying, but I am fascinated with the arrangement and instrumentation risks they've taken. I love how they incorporate synths into this record. NIN is one of my favorite bands and you can hear the Pere Ubu influence on Reznors' work from 1994 to 2008. You can also hear their influence on bands like Skinny Puppy's industrial sound. You can hear it in Ministry's eighties albums like LAND OF RAPE AND HONEY and TWITCH, particularly with how the synths and sequencers were used. It seems like Pere Ubu's intent was to make a post apocalyptic soundtrack and they certainly achieved that with tracks like "Thriller!". It really does feel like they were years ahead of where everybody was headed in the rest of the 1970s and well into the first the first half of 1980s of post punk, dub/reggae, goth, industrial. I also dig that they were not afraid to include all kinds of instruments outside your typical punk guitar. While I likely won't have a craving for hearing this album again, it is definitely worthy of a list like because of how influential it was on the burgeoning genres that would emerge from the crossroads of Pere Ubu.
Spannend und überraschend. Nicht zum immer hören.
On the Surface and Dub Housing are both awesome with jubilant edgier Talking Heads/ B-52s vibe. The rest of the album is pretty eh for me.
Definitely different, especially for its time. Sometimes it’s noise and chanting that sounds like Radiohead to people who don’t like Radiohead. Other times, it breaks into something jazzy and Doors-like. Would’ve liked it a lot more without the singer.
I think this is probably unfairly maligned because of David Thomas' voice and the timbre of some instruments. It's not one to playlist but I genuinely liked more than half of it. Judge this by the yardstick of being a post-punk record and you can see it's potency. Judge this by it's accessibility and it looks like a fish climbing a tree
Quite interesting to listen to. Reminds me of Sikth now and then.
Interesting. Kinda foundational dub stuff. Never got into it, but I can see why it's on the list. 3 *
Post punk, no Dub.
Started good, then industrial noise, then pretty good?
It’s fine but not something I’m going to come back to
I liked this Ubu album better than their prior featured one. A bit trippy to actually enjoy.
Too crazy for me. Started cool and then got weeeeeeird
I enjoy my daily ritual, but nearing album 700 it's all starting to bleed together. I don't even remember the last Pere Ubu album I listened to. Apparently it was 2 years ago. These guys are kinda offbeat and funky, but this album comes off as lackadaisical. Fun moments scattered through, plus it's barely over a half hour long.
Lcd Soundsystem x Takling Heads. Der skete ihvertfald noget skabet.
This is so much more interesting than 90% of all the other punk albums we've had. Still not really my style, but Pere Ubu really has their own sound.
Well this is a strange one. Musically unmusical. You can tell they have talent and are purposefully breaking the rules to make a controlled cacophony. It's certainly unique, especially for 78. An interesting listen, although not something I would consider revisiting.
I love seeing bands that really make a point to improve for their sophomoric efforts, and Pere Ubu really expanded their breadth here.
a pretty zany punk rock album, with prominent early usage of synthesizers in addition to the standard guitars and drums. the energy this album has is very different from all the others i've listened to. vocal performances and lyrical nonsense are unlike anything i'm used to. it's a very crazy sound. the album has a demented vibe that makes it sound like it came from a twisted, colorful haunted house. as the album goes on, it gets more and more experimental. it's a VERY peculiar album on this list.
Never heard of this artist. Ya know, I have discovered a lot of artists/bands that I never knew or heard about until this list. These guys are interesting. Not my style but I respect what they're doing.
I'm about 350 albums in (wow!) and this is definitely one of the craziest and most off-beat albums we've had so far. The vocals are very much not my thing, and make it almost a certainty that I won't be listening again. I appreciated the weirdness and wonder, and even some of the music (I was nodding along here and there) but I didn't find it enjoyable. Who would ever put this on, and when? Maybe if it was a soundtrack, you could sit back and watch something interesting unfold to the sound. But just as an aural experience, I can't imagine anyone ever rushing to plop this onto the turntable. It feels indecisive opting for a 3, but the score reflects my grudging respect alongside a hefty dose of "nope, never again, thanks". PS Codex, the final track, nearly lost it a star 😳
oh yeah this is peak alternative. driving instrumentals and lyrics that don’t make sense. my jam. “thriller!” felt like an uncanny valley episode. more so than the others. but i kinda love it. i want to give it a 4/5 but i really don’t think that’s appropriate so i’ll do 3/5.
It's fine, mostly fine.
An okay album, only (Pa) Ubu Dance Party stood out.
This sounds like off brand Talking heads, but there were definitely songs here I enjoyed. The first 2 are probably the strongest. Would be happy to revisit those.
A very strange album, didn't love it but I didn't hate it either.
Interesting, talking headsy sort of art rock stuff from a jehovah's witness cat, apparently. Convergent evolution, not sure why the heads got so much bigger. His voice can be a bit much at times, and Jonathan Demme didn't direct a concert film for em.
It's a 3.5/5, but that's because there are as many cool tracks that I really like as ones that I think are really annoying, so hard to judge if I'll give it a 3 or a 4. Leaning towards the former. 3.5/5
It's weird, its cool... there's parts I hate and parts I really like. I will be listening to more of their music
You know what? At least it's unique and interesting, which I can appreciate during this challenge, where some albums just fail to leave a lasting impression at all.
This is the best album to put on if you want to get laid. Especially the last track.
Ooh, this is weird! I like it.
Pretty cool. Kinds like jazzy, rocky punk
It was... fine.
Love the weirdness—some great moments throughout. Lots of threads in this music that clearly influenced other bands. ‘Ubu Dance Party’ was definitely on the radar of Phish. Solid 3.5.
It's still a tough listen, but I liked this better than the other Pere Ubu album on the list.
This was a nice surprise! A lot of bleeps and bloops, reminiscent of early electronic/alternative. But I enjoyed the songs, very catch!
There is a lot to say about this album. Is it all good? No! But it certainly possesses some interesting elements that will push you beyond your comfort zone. I did get into some of the songs, others not so much. I like how little this album doesn't try to make itself likeable.
Pretty weird post punk. Deceiving title, no dub sadly
Wasn’t expecting this from the name of the album but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Pink raro y medio diabólico pero está bastante divertido y cortito. Se me hizo cotorro.
Why is this rated so low overall? This isn’t bottom 15 of the 150 albums I’ve heard so far let alone the 1001 total which will undoubtedly include more stuff that doesn’t deserve it.
A vibe, not my vibe
Could have gotten into this had I found it in my twenties. Yesterday it mainly made me anxious. In a good way I suppose. 🤷♂️
Prog punk. One of the foundational post-punk albums, this is aggressively weird. Funky bass but robotic without any soul/blues - the rhythm is like it’s all made out of corners and could come clattering down anytime, just pure momentum holding it together. Strange layers of keyboard, synth, and effects stacked up on top of each other. The vocals are sort of sung, more like yelped and shouted and wailed. The guitars are there to mess up the rhythm even more and bring more noise to the high end. Follows in the eccentric auteur Beefheart tradition of avant garde chaos, but angrier, less psychedelic and more ironic. Pioneering, influential, but not one to listen to for fun.
Interesting, not bad, but not good. Like some extra weird David Byrne stuff.
3 stars
2.7
Weirdo punk stuff. I like it. Feels like a proto Mr. Bungle. Not what I expected? I've heard the name once or twice but that's about it. Pretty solid.
Day401 - i’ve never heard of pere ubu and i didn’t know what to expect but maybe they weren’t the best you can tell they are influencing better bands to come
The good, the bad, and the weird.
3 stars
I enjoyed following the cartoon logic of these songs. The album can feel like a carnival funhouse where mirrors distort your reflection and floors move unexpectedly beneath you. It’s a surreal trip through punk and surf rock with plenty of experimental turns. “Caligari’s Mirror” is a highlight. I love the way that joyful chorus bursts in!
I'm sad about an untimely and unintentional computer restart that made me lose my first draft review, but I'll sum it up: I enjoyed this. Nice level of experimentation and oddities and some interesting traditional composition moments. It was an easy listen and when I wanted to lean in I could, and there was more offered beyond the surface to get what I wanted. I went down a few rabbit holes in looking up this band. Coming across their website was a bit of a bummer because one of the first things you see is an ongoing obituary section of people in the band and various staff personnel. It was a reminder for me that many of these older acts don't have so many existing band members and that we are all listening to time capsules. Gave me a little perspective.
I didn’t hate this. I hear some Talkung Heads and some Pixies in here so that’s a win in my book. Codex is terrible though
Not bad
Abrasive and artsy vocal attempts do not a fun album make. That said, I really enjoyed the guitar work across the album, and with maybe just a touch different approach to vocals, this would’ve been something really special for me.
There was a really good song in here! And then a few okay ones..
Noisy, clangy and fun.
pwetty cool, I like the vocals
I don't know what I was expecting, but I did enjoy this one.
I really appreciated getting Pere Ubu's debut album earlier in this collection, in part because of the unique sound and out-there-ness. I was also perfectly happy to have that one album as my sole exposure to them; I wish we could have been given a choice as to whether we wanted *more* of their avant-garage weirdness, or some artist/band that *isn't* in this collection but should be (that list is sadly quite long), as I would have eagerly chosen the latter choice. But "Dub Housing" it is. Boo, 1001 albums! Much like their first album, it's an interesting experiment but I'm not sure any particular track really stood out. "On the surface" is kind of catchy (very mildly so), and there's something a bit compelling to the refrain in "Caligari's mirror". Even though the music is quite different stylistically, I was particularly reminded of the band Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit (maybe just the same sort of experimental noodling). I don't think there's any good reason to give them only two stars, except to balance out the four stars I gave them for their debut album, back when I didn't realize there was more Pere Ubu ahead of us. But that's not really fair to this album, I suppose, even if it doesn't really seem to add anything distinctive compared to their first album (although the "1001 Albums" review seems to suggest this album took a radically different turn, I must admit I didn't hear it).
Really this would be a 2.5 but I am feeling generous.
It was cool I'm a rock fan so this isn't necessarily my kind of music
first listen this one was super strange, but also not that interesting
Fine
This band is the inverse of Duran Duran. For every smooth, slick, accessible, note Duran Duran produces, Pere Ubu has its counter. It’s not that it’s bad (it isn’t), it is just crazy how consistently challenging it is to find an inroad. They are musically talented, but even more challenging at pushing the boundaries of accessibility.
Ok.
sorry i have no opinion on this so i guess it was fine. historically im kind of no thots head empty about pere ubu but maybe i should google why they are included in this list
Dave its Dave Lynch here. Been thinking that those new wave bangers from the first album are a bit superfluous. I really liked the crazy soundtrack stuff that sounds like it should be in one of my movies. So make a whole album of that. Cheers other Dave, I think we will. Having said that it's still a good listen, if you lean into the craziness.
Roots of indie rock
Es raro, pero banco. Algo prácticamente distinto a todo. Como de música teatral de terror o drama oscuro.
I don't think I'm qualified to rate this album. Bizarre as hell, but I had fun. 3/5
Definitely something wonderful and admirable about the approach to making music. It feels Like Pop avant- jazz but it is not beautiful enough for me to want to listen again. I do like later Ubu albums.
Listened to this in full on a trip round the M25. I suspect it will be a challenging listen for some, but I didn’t feel the need to skip. Followed it up with Schlagenheim by black midi.
I like the artwork. The album itself is a bit bonkers, in a good way, I guess. I'm sure I'll revisit some time.
I respect it but I don't enjoy it.
Eens goed opnieuw luisteren
It's different. Some parts are ok, but other parts are unbearable. I could see how someone would enjoy this though. Overall, average for me. I like some of what's going on.
Weird. Incredibly weird. I respect the artist for going all in. But it's often hard to listen to.
Honestly I can’t even say I liked most of it, but man, they sound like they are having so much fun! “Avant-garage” is a great way to describe the sound. It feels like, “What if Talking Heads, but David Byrne had a stroke and no one told him?” 2.5⭐️ (rounded up to 3 for rating)
I guess I can appreciate most of what they’re doing here.Don’t think I’ll be coming back to it though.
Be warned, this list includes not one but at least TWO Pere Ubu albums. That fact alone is almost as outrageous as this album, and for that, I applaud the curator and his atrocious gall.
You can totally hear the influence this had. Pixies, TV on the Radio, King Missile, just to skim the surface. It’s experimental punk, but well played. Never proggy. Reminds me a bit of Captain Beefheart. Certainly an acquired taste. Very interesting. Definitely different. Don’t love, but don’t hate. It’s kinda fun. 3/5
This is one of those records that is important for its influence but not something you'd be throwing on all the time.
Great music. Lots of fun.
Some of it’s a bit wishy washy but for the most part it’s decent experimental/alternative rock with a vague feel of Talking Heads
я ничего не запомнила (классика), но хватило меня на полдня
Very odd little album. It felt like a bit of a love letter to many different artists. I’m not entirely sure what to make of it but I think that’s the point.
