Reviews (page 7 of 8)
Its boring although a good production but nothing special
A couple of ok to good songs ("Sunflower" and "Wild Wood") and a whole lot of MOR pre-Britpop style rock. I used to like Weller a lot, but I've honestly barely listened to anything by him in 25 years now, it just makes me think as a young and impressionable teen in the days when this came out, maybe I was too easily dazzled?
meh
pretty easy listen. pleasant singer-songwritery folk-rock; not my usual cup of tea, but this was pretty nice, especially instrumentally. however it overstayed its welcome a bit.
i liked the melancholic and atmospheric sound of some of the songs (wild wood, all the pictures on the wall and country) but the rest was just fine, which isn't great for an album that's so long
His second solo album. Sunflower is a good opening. Nice guitar licks. Never heard this album before. I was expecting something more up tempo and The Jam like. This is quite mellow and tired sounding vocally. If you think about the artists and bands around on 1993 this is kind of 'Dad Rock' sounding. As Weller goes this is Diet Pepsi. I prefer the full sugar of Coca Cola that is Weller in The Jam. A tad same. Nice production though.
I'm not a fucking dentist.
Bit too bland for me. Couldn't connect with it. At least I know not to listen to it again. To be fair did like some of the instrumental sections
Steve Windwood in a fake mustache and glasses playing 90s rock.
Mid. Reminds me of Clapton, without the virulent racism or the charisma either.
Not gonna lie, this album is not what I expected out of the 90's? Overall, I didn't hate the experience of listening to this album, but I also didn't love it. And I'm just thinking that might be worse than really loving or hating it. It's a little too blues-y for my taste, though interestingly, the bluesiest track on this record is the one I actually enjoyed most (because at least it knew what it was doing).
Pleasant listening, but a bit bland... 2,5/5
Not bad. I enjoyed some of the album and can definitely see myself listening to one or two songs in the future, but nothing about the album really stood out to me.
It seemed like this album tried really hard to be cool. It really wasn’t. It just seemed so unbelievably corny to me. There was something about it that came across as trying way too hard. Maybe it was because I had poisoned the well by reading a review that said it sounded like dentist rock 😂 I hadn’t any idea what dentist rock could be but when I listened to this album I finally understood.
The album equivalent of talking about the weather. Nothing much to say, nor very memorable. 2/5
A common arc - going through a period of youthful exuberance and creativity where "rules" are meant for breaking and studios are for capturing the essence of that energy - once that well dries up after, let's say your 30s, you start to appreciate the craft of songwriting, arrangements and studio precision; the rules were there for a reason and the creative challenge is to work within their confines. Can yield some late-career gems or some incredibly lame music - Wild Wood falls firmly in the latter category.
I forget what almost all of this sounded like. It was very bland Brit pop that I couldn’t connect with at all. It’s not for me. It would be fine as background music, but I was again, looking at how long the next song was each time, hoping they were short.
Wild Wood was ok, everything was a bit boring.
His voice is nice - kind of raspy. But I'm a bit bored.
Sometimes the punks grow up. Was The Jam punk? I don't know. The Jam had some good songs, but I don't really know much about them. That Weller has a long solo career after The Jam was completely unknown to me. Sadly it's because these songs fail to register anything except a ho hum feeling. Disappointing really.
File under: “Why is it on the list?” Not bad, pleasant enough, but lyrically and musically relatively uninteresting.
Hissimusiikkia mutta parempaa. Tässähän tämä meni kuunnellessa
Pretty forgettable after the opening track. A little singer-songwritery in a way that just did not grab me.
Pretty good moments but ultimately nothing spectacular.
I couldn’t focus on this album, nothing special.
Pretty bland

Weller doing Weller
Reading through some of the other reviews, it's very fun to see others describe this album as "funky." I have to assume these are the same type of folks to call black pepper "spicy."
2.5
блять, я будто слушаю саундтрек низкосортного сериала, хотя вайбик определенный есть, 2/5, мне не нравки.
How does Paul Weller keep worming his way in to this list in different outfits? Average white guy and nothing more.
Forgot every song as I listened to it.
2 - fine
I vaguely remember this one getting pushed back in 1993 but it never had much traction stateside. The title track has 33M listens on Spotify, I may have heard it once or twice but it's not a song I'd seek out. Overall the album was just ok, kind of boring though. It feels folky and wanders, not my thing I guess. I thought it felt very singer/songwriter focused and independently produced as it obviously wasn't looking for hits or mainstream acceptance. Background music at best. Being honest, I didn't finish this one, there was no compelling reason to go through all 16 songs once I hit #11. No influence that I can see or measure, zero hits in the US, average music and vocals. Would never make my T1001 and not sure how it made yours.
What are the merits that this one's got to be included, since the wikipedia article didn't shed a single photon of light upon this. Music is perfectly adequate pop, nice productions, the songs are as boring as ever. It's referred to as trad rock in few places and I'm assuming it's some sort of initiator to a micro genre of british popular music, one which I couldn't give a gnats bollocks about, but none the less. This might be the reason why this album is held in high regard. Fractionally more interesting than country/folk evolution with wee bit of added electricity.
2/5
boy stop tearing your throat and let the rest have fun, and make it better
Cannot say I have ever been a great fan of Paul Weller as a solo artist. Although he is a well regarded musician there is little of his solo work that I like. I am also not keen on him as an individual in the way he acts and his deportment. This was not helped at all by the death last week of The Jam’s drummer Rick Buckler. Reading his obituary it appears that Weller’s attitude towards him was not good. True or not I don’t have much time for Weller so my view of him does affect my view of his music. He was the darling of the British music press and this album held up by them as a masterpiece. I never bought into this and less so now and regarded listening today as time wasted. 2/5 25/2/25
[3/10]
Old man rock. There are some decent tunes here, but just incredibly unexciting. Best song: Moon on Your Pyjamas
2.5
Pretty bland I’d say.
"You kids like the rock and roll, yeah? Check out this Wild Wood record!" "Shut up, Dad."
Nothing stood out to me about this album. Maybe I didn't give it enough attention, but it also didn't grab at me in any way. Sounded like he was a good musician and singer. The album frequently reminded me of 90's easy listening or contemporary rock. Not sure if this a great album because he originated that sound, or he did it best in some regard, but it just wasn't anything to me.
This was too long and boring. It wasn't awful all the time but I can't understand why this made the list.
This is very well constructed music. If I pause to consider a sheet of paper I can appreciate it as well. I'm just not getting anything from this that says "You should listen to this" It's a cohesive album of music that sounds like waiting room music. It's lacking soul.
i got bored
Someone reviewed this and said it sounds timeless bc it could’ve been made in the 70s. No…it sounds like the 70s, but 20 years later for some reason. Soulless tripe.
Quite Boring. Nothing all that special or different about it. Dont really understand why it's on the list.
Most of the songs were bad. I thought Paul Weller was better than this. Why did I think "Wild Wood" would be a good album? Looks like I'll be forgetting this album. "Sunflower" is actually quite good though. 2 stars for "Wild Wood".
Very dull, couldn't get into it.
2/5
I've always found Weller's solo work a little bland compared with The Jam and Style Council. Something about it just never really grabbed me, although I normally like the singer-songwriter genre too. It's OK but I don't know how important this is and not much stood out.
It was nothing to write home about and certainly not must listen to before I die… I enjoyed the blues infused rock, there were some ok tracks, but overall more on the generic side
The title track was okay, with hints that it could’ve been something better, but the rest failed to make an impression (at best). The instrumentals were probably the best part. 2 for being boring
It’s fine.
Dull
Not bad, very inessential. Doubt I'll listen again and can't think of a good reason to put this on the list. The Jam was a lot better.
First five songs or so, I thought were pretty strong. Lost momentum pretty quick. Too bad, coulda gave probably made a nice 35 minute album out of this. Not bad, but definitely did not need to hear it.
The good thing about 1001albumsgenerator is that you maybe start with the opinion that although you liked the Jam, you hated Paul Weller solo stuff, and just like that you get Wild Wood and your opinion is validated. A competent album that neither moves or excites but simply floats over your head leaving you no better off for having listened to it
It was okay
It's...not great. I don't really think it stands out. It sounds like stereotypical early 90s rock. That time where grunge was starting to wind down, but there were these acts that were kind of stuck between grunge and Clapton era classic guitar rock. 2 stars
I accepted it. No more. No less.
Meh, this was fine. Kind of boring. Kind of Ok.
dentist rock
I’m guessing this is a „you had to have been there album“. Well, I wasn’t.
Paul Weller I have known by name only, and having given it a listen yesterday I feel it remains that way. Unmemorable to me, except for a few similarities to Neil Young I identified. Oh well, onwards and upwards.
This is forgettable. Not worth adding to the list in my opinion
Maybe a 3
Wasn't much aware of Weller or The Jam before some Facebook music group posts. The lyrics can be a good bit underwhelming, in keeping with the yacht rock stylings of the music. I can hear at times what could have been pretty cool, like in the instrumental part of Has My Fire Really Gone Out? or 5th Season or Shadow of the Sun, but the lyrics return too soon. I keep feeling like this could have been something.
maybe my head wasn't in the right place, but this seemed really bland. there are so many bold albums that didn't make the cut, i fail to see why this one did. i thought the first song was all right, though.
I really wanted to like it.
I accidentally gave another album two instead on 3 stars, so ol' Paulie boy can join them.
boring
I was almost as bored listening to this as Paul Weller was recording it.
This was a background music type album for me. I never heard of Paul Weller until I listened to this. Cool riffs throughout the album,.but it was mainly jam music with more rhythmic singing parts being interjected between blues type riffs. I didn't really hear many hooks on the songs that drew me.in. I feel like this is an Americana type album, which is strange because Paul is English yet sounds like some type of blues singer.
I don't like it. The vocals and some of the blues noodling is Clapton-adjacent. I think I know what it feels like for Elvis Costello haters to listen to Elvis Costello now.
Perfectly fine album from an artist I’ve never heard of before.
You’d think he’d do something interesting at least once, even if by accident, in this albums 54 minute run time, but no. Not once. This album brings absolutely nothing into the world. It’s not enjoyable in the slightest, yet it also isn’t bad enough to laugh at. The sheer lack of any creativity at all is almost enough to earn this album a score of 1/5, in my opinion. However, I will refrain from giving out that score, to save it for the truly intolerable albums.
Very Frampton
Oh, hey, look at that, it's a rootsy throwback from an established artist. Of course it made this list.
not bad
unremarkable, como dicen los gringos. No recuerdo nada de este disco.
Solid 90s album, nothing special to me though.
Inoffensive early 90’s dad rock. As a dad it’s about three decades too early for me to enjoy.
When I first started to learn to play guitar I had a book that was something like learn guitar in 40 songs, and the first one was Wild Wood. I'd never heard it and had no way easy of finding it at the time, so I just guessed. I had the strumming pattern well off and it sounded terrible but I learned Em and Am, so cheers Paul. To the album, I had no idea this what post-Jam Paul Weller sounded like, what happened? He has a good voice that nearly saves a few of these Phil Collins-adjacent tracks but all of it is proper over produced middle of the road 90s mush. 1.5.
Never listened to Paul Weller before.... If you didn't know he was in the Jam, there is absolutely nothing about this solo stuff that would give you any hint of this. No similarities at all. I actually didn't dislike any of it, but it all just feels a bit fluffy...unsubstantial somehow. Needs more to it. But it isn't bad, just very forgettable. Sorry Paul, I'll stick to the jam
Not exactly the jam, and that is a problem
C'était correct mais sans plus.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this. It’s very 90s in an incredibly specific way, but one that is very hit or miss for me, and this is a miss. “Hung Up” was a bright spot, but that was about it. I wish I could give this a 2.5, but I’m rounding down.
So forgettable I'm not 100% sure I actually listened to it.
Я странно себя чувствую по этому поводу, но это очень скучный альбом. Последние несколько песен ок, но возможно за час я просто привык. Лучшая песня - Shadow Of The Sun.
I read through a few of the 5 star comments, and I wish I heard this as they hear it so I can understand. But I was mostly bored. The title track is nice, but I really just felt an overwhelming blah vibe by the time I was through.
Decent enough.
There's plenty of music worth praising for the production, but there's something about music where the production is the main point of praise 💀
not much to say, it was alright
The instrumental aspect of the songs is good, if not a little boring, but the lyrics just feel...blah. I don't know what genre this would fall under, but I imagine some liberal boomers in early 2000s really liking this album. For me, it's pretty bland and flavorless.
I was so bored with this album, and it being a double album really wore me down. Barely got through it one time only. Almost every song felt identical, and I'm not really a fan of soulful music like this to begin with, so the closest I came to enjoying this was bopping my head to some of the drums and beats. I have no idea what to look for in this album, if it's in the lyrics, I wasn't tuning into those very much so I may have missed out on something there. It seems that his lyrics are a well praised aspect of his music by critics, so I'm giving this two stars to reflect that potential. I didn't actively hate this. but I really don't see myself listening to this album as a whole ever again.
Paul Weller rocks. This album... ehhhhh... not so much
Starts off really good but loses steam half way through
not really for me. Production is aight but this is boring. whoever said dentist rock nailed it lol.
Snooze fest 1993 deluxe edition. 2/5
Das ist ein Rockalbum. Ich finde, nicht eines der besseren. Der Titelsong des Albums ist gut. Alles andere eher durchschnittlich
I like the sound and tone of this guy's voice but the songs are so melancholy, I don't feel excited or particularly sad listening to it. Is he the guy from The Jam?? That doesn't make sense. 2 stars
This album takes the worst impulses of 90s adult alternative and throws them all together. The lyrics are bad, the music is bland, and the jams remind me of bands that play at local farmers markets and get all the 50 and 60 year olds dancing horribly. Paul Weller's musical pedigree is impressive, and while I can see the appeal of this album despite what I've written so far, I don't believe it is anywhere near as groundbreaking as the Jam. However, the musicianship is good and the production is very good. A lot of work was put into this album in the studio and it shows. Maybe the resources would have been better spent somewhere else.
Totally listenable but also forgettable.
Maybe it me lately, but this album is very bland. Very listenable but nothing to make you say let me turn this one up .
Weller has a soulful voice and some of the music is decent but it's just so boring. The Jam were great, The Style Council were groovy but his solo work leaves me cold apart from the odd tune. I saw him live at The Royal Albert Hall about 14 years ago and all the bald mods were getting antsy cos he hadn't played any Jam hits yet and I could empathise.
Wild Wood doesn't deserve to be on here. It's bland stuff that thousands of other artists have done over decades, and just because it comes from a leading name in the industry doesn't make it any less bland. A boring low 2.
This is perfectly fine, decent enough to have on but it's not going to change anyone's life. It's pretty middle of the road, gets fun in places (The Weaver probably my favourite), but not a huge amount there. Think there's plenty better Weller stuff not on this list... 2/5.
Kinda nice, kinda gentle. An evening album after a day of work, but not a day of exhaustion. An album to be gentle around, and to be gentled to. It reminds me of Jack Johnson, but maybe Mr Weller was there before Jack was Jack? There is a place for an album in my group. I see it as light and joyous background music in a summer afternoon house after swimming in a crips ocean and the sun is escaping for the evening that will be long and conversational. Listening with my ears on, that could happen too. But its not there for me currently. Lets go 3 stars. ... nah, not quite. Lets go 2.
It was fine
I thought I would need to listen to the album again to get a better feel for the lyrics and music, but then decided not to.
Sounds like music my dad would turn on during camping trips and road trips. Easy listening soft pop rock that's borderline boring. I hate when you get one of these albums that is kind of boring and then you see that it's longer than a standard LP. I think the only song that really caught my ear was Shadow of the Sun. It got more psych and prog and the longer track length let the song develop more. I would have liked him to lean more into that although I understand that isn't really something that sells in the mainstream music world.
More like Paul Well-boring, am I right
I didn’t listen to the whole thing, but enough to get a review. It was okay.
Kind of boring, didn't really like or dislike it
jeg er sådan set ret stor fan af The Jam så jeg blev lidt overrasket (negativt). Nogle enkelte catchy numre, god stemme, men kedelig!
I wouldn't be mad if Paul Weller was playing live at a bar I walked into. I would be annoyed if I had to shout and strain for my friends to hear me over this perfectly passable background music.
The most bland easy-listening bullshit album I’ve ever heard. Who likes this!? And why is it so long?
Nice easy listening. Nothing remarkable, but nothing too bad. Never been one for soft rock but this wasn't the worst
Vaya rollazo. No le pongo un 1 porque estamos en Adviento y mi misión de hoy es decir cosas bonitas. Diré que la lista de canciones de después está bien :D.
Who even is this? Pleasant background music, nothing remotely interesting about it.
Well executed but boring department store rock.
Ikkje ein ny favoritt
The Jam were a great band. Weller after/without the Jam is embarassing and dull. I don't get the reverence. I can't imagine him getting signed if this was a demo. Pants.
Kinda boring and a chore to get through.
Okay acoustic, pretty much background music.
I didn't really pay attention I have to admit since was working. From what I did pick up, it was not for me. Will I listen to again: 0%
Pretty forgettable for me really. I listened to the album while I worked and basically did not come to an opinion good or bad. Nothing really stood out to me.
1.5 - You're on thin fucking ice, Paul.
Eh
Nothing special
Not bad, a little too soft rock. I feel like I need to age about 10 more years to like this more.
ehhh.
it was ok... kinda white guy soul
Dull
Mjög fín, soft listening plata, ekkert sem stendur uppúr, bara bakgrunnur
2 stars. boring
This was the first album on the list where I hadn’t heard of the artist. Then I read the bio and I have heard of the jam, just didn’t know the singer had a solo career. I don’t have much to say about this album. It wasn’t bad but it didn’t do anything for me. It felt unnecessary, like this album doesn’t need to exist. It’s just a collection of bland forgettable songs.
Good on you Paul. Got famous enough to make an album of whatever you want. What you want is super boring dad rock but like, it sounds like you might be having fun I guess... In more seriousness the band is fire on this album. It grooved so well but every time Paul jumped back on the vocals is fell apart. Not something I'll listen to again.
Below par, sub optimal didnt make me sad nor happy.
Uninspiring and unoriginal blues rock. This was 1993, when there was some great music around. 1992 was probably my favourite year for music across all time, so this totally flew under my radar at the time. I was shocked to see there were three top 20 hits off this album and expected to half-recognise them. It turns out that I really had managed to somehow avoid this material when it first came out. To be honest I would rather have left it that way.
His singing improved a lot over the years. It was always the weakest part of the Jam. That being said, I don't understand what makes this album special. It's not bad at all, but I'm sure it wouldn't have made the list if it wasn't from the UK. Favorite song: all the pictures on the wall.
I struggled, à bit blah
Generic and boring.
Easy listening but very forgettable
How many stars would Wild Wood get if Wild Wood truly sounded wild (more than this tame affair, surely)?
2.75
I wasn't impressed. Sounds like easy listening music for dads.
Not bad. Solid sound.
In which Weller plays some songs which sound like other people’s songs - Dear Prudence here, Voodoo Chile there. Better then Style Council, not as good as The Jam.
Yuhhh
In a nutshell: the man from Style Council and The Jam does dad rock/northern soul. The songwriting isn’t much to write home bout, the guitar work is fine. Although Gomez do not directly cite Weller as an influence, I can hear bits and pieces of Paul’s music in the band’s first two albums (see Sunflower, Country and Has My Fire Really Gone Out then compare to Get Miles and Make No Sound). Overall: 3/10
Paul Weller may be the king of Dad Rock. There are elements that are good. He has a great voice, though maybe a little too smooth. The production is good, though maybe a little too smooth. There are a few great chord progressions but it in the end it’s all just too smooth blues pop dad rock. I want to like it, probably because now I’m a dad but good taste in music is strong. Shadow of the Sun is a great song especially the outro 5.7/10
major sleeper with spme decent tracks but not a single banger
i hate saying negative things about music artists because it’s how people express themselves but this isn’t for me i don’t think. it kind of sounds like music that would play in a dr waiting room, i swear i’ve heard some of these songs in my dr before. although, in saying that i thought it would be a lot worse, there are some songs i think i might listen to again that i’ve saved but i don’t think it would be something i’d keep going back to listen to. i wouldn’t feel an urge to go and listen.
2.5/5
Aika kädenlämpöistä, välillä yllätti.
Tråkigt, för långt, poänglös inklusion
Pretty okayish, not my favorite but its decent
Paul Weller has had the career of 3 men and they’ve all produced classic songs. Never properly listened to any of his solo albums though and this was… disappointing Sunflower is a brilliant song. Wild Wood has a great vibe. The rest is just there and rather uninspiring
snoozefest. would probably like it if i was a 60 year old real estate agent driving home on a friday night in my diesel audi a6 knowing my wife cooked up a mean carbonara. fav songs: those instrumental ones idk their names
Nothing you haven't heard before, just a tired 70s-era sound transported to a 90s toss-up LP. The only moment of feeling this inspired in me is when one of the melodies sounded like 'Give Me the Beat Boys,' as I really hate that track.
Not bad music but I will never listen to this again
Well produced, good songs and band but its the vocals. After the Jam Weller's voice didn't really fit the genres he moved into. But it is his project and he needed to be the frontman. Covers by other artists may well elevate some of the songs.
Got very dull very quick. Weller can construct an interesting intrumental but add his lyrics and voice and I'm bored stiff
Drab khaki music for drab khaki boys.
Nothing really special
I became very bored, just the same song over and over again, the instrumentals did not help. I give it something, it was very mellow.
Couple songs I vibed with, but overall not my thing.
Good, but long. Half the album is demos of the same songs. Cool to check out if you're a fan, but got tired of it 2/3 of the way through. Dude can rip guitar though.
This is to me the definition of an average pop rock album. Weller’s vocals are fine but not great, the songs are generally just ok; some better moments but mostly just kind of exist in the background. The short instrumentals actually aren’t terrible but don’t do anything either. Album length is perhaps a little long but that’s not it’s main issue. It’s just a very average album and I don’t see how this is essential at all.
Nope
Aggressively bland, this is what Clapton was clawing for in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s, to be foiled by his religious blues Puritanism. Weller storms past, embracing the fuzz, the wah wah, the other psychedelic trimmings - one song is called “Moon On Your Pyjamas” (and jizz on my feet?) - and manages to make it all boring and just the right side of melodically forgettable. The two short interstitial instrumentals are wonderful in both their polish and disposability. I listened to half of this driving to Curries Motors in Waltham Cross to drop off another hybrid Toyota Yaris, this time the sport SUV model. The caressing beige vibes were apt to a daring crawl on and off the M25. The temptation to upgrade this to three stars is strong, as the craftmanship in this record is impeccable. Everything in balance, bright and warm, you can hear the tubes and brushes. The vinyl strings. The sax taps. Great love went into this record. “In the back seat of my head, some place I can’t remember where…” The record suffered when I switched to headphones, as I could make out more of the lyrics, which sound like the wordplay one makes when improvising a lullaby to a baby after all words have been forgotten due to exhaustion. “Magic carpet ride … chase dreams across my fields… in the shadow of the sun… shoopy shoopy hot cross bun… please go to sleep my sweet…” On the way home, I went outside Tottenham Hale station to grab family provisions. There was a tall young man in a purple suit busking with twangy electric guitar, some distortion, some flange, closed eyes, and a stream of indecipherable emotion, “why, sky, pie…” You are His Son, I thought.
This sucked. Forgettable singer-songwriter self-serious fluff.
Everyone and their grandpa has an acoustic album, so I believe to have an acoustic driven album on this list, you have to be a fantastic songwriter and very creative with the instruments, and I thought this album has neither
It wasn't bad. I can't put my finger on it, but I do know that I would have liked it more if it was better.
It was fine.
Not my cup of tea, felt like a long album. Not something that I'll listen to again
Not much to recommend here. It’s got kind of a soft rock, pseudo blues thing going on that really just kind of annoyed me.
bit dull
A great song and then some really quite boring tunes.
Boring rock
This isn't an album I have to hear before I die. It's good music, but not memorable and I don't need to hear it again. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
Meh. Kinda boring
The song “Wild Wood” is great but the album is terrible. It is the most boring uninspired album I have ever listened to. It is full of boring dad rock. The only reason this is not a one star is the song “Wild Wood” and the song “Holy Man”.
This album had so little impact on me that I didn't realize it was over for half an hour.
Something about this reminded me of open mic nights at various coffee shops in the middle of the week in the early 2000s.
Echt niks aan dit. Het is niet onluisterbaar, maar gewoon totaal niet boeiend. 2 sterren.
Not his best only good tracks are sunflower and wild wood
Sunflower and Wild Wood are the only two I know on this album, and are both good, but after listening to the whole thing the rest of the tracks are a bit boring and became background noise.
gezellig, rustig, maar heeft me niet geraakt of weggeblazen.
Some boring old rich cowboy shit
I really think Paul Weller is hugely talented and I do enjoy his work with the Jam and the Style Council, so I was looking forward to this. But unfortunately I didn't find any songs to be inspiring or even close to catching my attention so I listened to it twice. Still nada, maybe i need to listen to it for a third time, but for now it only gets 2
Pretty useless album that's just too generic to be on this list, really.
A decent yet forgettable and generic solo attempt at blues and folk by the vocalist and guitarist of The Jam. There are a few highlights with cool psychedelic studio effects, and the production is clear, but the majority of songs just suck, and it's way too long. Favorites: Sunflower, All the Pictures on the Wall, Shadow of the Sun, Moon on Your Pyjamas
Big fan of The Jam. Big fan of the Style Council. Found this dull from start to finish when it first came out and a quarter of a century has done nothing to change my mind. Next!
I didn't find anything too special about this and I found myself listening without acknowledging the names. Overall, it was good but nothing distinct. Fave track(s): Shadow Of The Sun
Meh, it's not like there is something blatantly annoying or boring, actually if I try to listen to a single random song.. it's quite good. But I just can't listen to this album from start to finish, I've tried like 5 times, I always get distracted and end up doing something else.. so I guess it's not really captivating to me. It would be a 3, but the universe is telling me it should be less than that
Solid northern soul radio pop.
90’er poprock, udmærket, lidt glembart
Nothing special, but it wasn't terrible either. 2/5
Weller has such bluesy sensibilities! The Modfather, Part II. Still, like many sequels, there is something left wanting - both lyrically and musically. Solid but not life-altering.
Better than I thought it was going to be, but still not to my taste.
More brit rock. Its OK, but its not an "everyone must hear this" album. 2/5
boring
Melancholic lyrics, slow paced songs with some ballad/country/rock hints along some tracks.
This was okay. It kind of reminded me of Jack Johnson's music. You know, the guy who did that one song for Curious George. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the best part of this album was the instrumental songs, as their sound was far more up my alley. Weird that this guy was in The Jam, from what I've heard this is nothing really like that.
Pretty chill
It was good but not as good as his stuff with the Jam
Alright for some background listening, very good but not really my thing
It was fine. Nothing really unique about it so I’m confused what makes it so incredible or remarkable to be included on this list. 4/10
New music was very interested in the music
I just don't like Paul Weller's voice. Never have.
Nothing that really stands out from many, many other 90's singer-songwriter types. Like w/ Frank Black, I feel like this one is drawing on the Jam pedigree -- or it's just a British thing, I don't know
In today's entry of "The author's bias for 80s and 90s British Pop Rock and some other albums you should listen to before you die", Paul Weller's sublimely average Wild Wood. Wild Wood was so popular that it kicked three singles that made it to the top 20 in the UK. I don't know how it did in the US because the Wiki page for this spectacular artistic merit that I just listened to so I can die is sparse. Paul Weller is the type of musician people tell you they listen to to sound smart. Why his second album has to be listened to before I die is a question I will ruminate on from now until the day I die. Wild Wood is a decent enough album, 3/5 for musicality, 2/5 for it's presence on this list.
negative
This was... Interesting. But not something I see myself revisiting. I'm waffling between 2 or 3 stars, but once again leaning harsh on these.
didn't click
Not for me.
It wasn’t bad, but not something I care to go back to and listen again
Meh
A less rock n roll version of Bob Seger. A less hip version of Tragically Hip. It’s like all the pieces are there but somebody put the puzzle together wrong.
This is an area where I think the Americans fully shit on the British. Everything on this was fine which redeems it from 1, but could have been done better by literally any of the folk/country/soft rock artists from America. Step off and stick to Fairport Convention.
File under adult contemporary. I thought the last track was much better before realizing that the album had finished and Spotify was now playing another artist!!!
2.5
Weller, Weller, Weller huh! Tell me more, tell me more... Actually, Paul, don't tell me more ive heard enough.
Nice sounds
Boring dadrock
Couldn’t finish.
Really a mediocre experience. I dozed off mid day twice. There’s no sizzle even if the songwriting is okay.
weird as that it's paul weller, weirder that it's from the 90s. Feels like some shitey unknown soft rocker from the mid 70s. expected better.
Light rock. Country-ish. Got about halfway through and just wasn't really feeling it. Wasn't holding my interest.
No doubt he's talented, but this was so. boring.
Pop rock que não empolgou.
Ok I guess
Tja, prettige stem maar een beetje saai ofzo
Twee keer geprobeerd, maar Paul is een beetje een saaie baas...
not so wild
oinspirerande och ljummen musik(?) Välproddad dock. Bra ljud
Alltså det är ju inte dåligt, men det är ju väldigt tamt? Måste man verkligen höra det här innan man dör? Kan man inte lyssna på vilken som helst rockgubbe?
Sunflower sympa, le reste écoutable mais pas transcendant
Nothing poor but nothing stand out. It felt like background music after a while. Dont feel I will be rushing back.
This was BORING. I think this is just Paul Weller needing to pop out another album so his dad fans don't forget about it. It had some nice guitar bits in places but they were very isolated and the whole sound of the album was dull as dishwater.
Someone called this dentist rock and now I can't unhear it. I know his credentials but wow yes this is such dentist rock.
Bland
Meh. Weller's solo stuff might as well be Eric Clapton without guitar show offs.
Some tasty licks but overall it didn't do much for me
Dad rock. Boring.
I think I'm running out of ways to say, "This isn't completely terrible, but why is it on the list?" If this album is on your list of essentials, you might want to take a step back and ask if your list is too big. Best track: Country
Vaya rollazo. No le pongo un 1 porque estamos en Adviento y mi misión de hoy es decir cosas bonitas. Diré que la lista de canciones de después está bien :D.
Quite a bit of a letdown, unfortunately. The first few tracks had me bobbing along to a sound that was familiar but just novel enough. Then the music found its level: I would use "AOR". Finally, the length killed my remaining goodwill. Wild Wood is a good sounding album, but it's wrapped in too much packing material.
First listen. Seems like a good album, but nothing special for me. 2/5.
again, just does nothing for me
Ehh.
So boring 2/5
Booooooo. Dentist rock for sure
boring
calmo e melódico e groovy
eh
If Van Morrison debuted in the 90's, this is the album you'd get. The album is fine, to me it just sounds likes a really good band at a farmers market.
Sounds like Paul Weller. Functional and competant. Very 90s. Not exciting or interesting in any way. 2/5.
Disco bastante plano y que no me ha transmitido nada. Buena voz, buenos acordes, pero muy poco variado. Daba la sensación de que no avanzaba el disco. Algo más de variedad en las canciones se hubiese agradecido
Where has this music been all my life? That's right, it's been humbly hiding away from me, as it could've continued to do for as long as it wished. I wouldn't have complained about never knowing this album exists. I even have a hard time finding descriptors for this album. It's unmemorable but inoffensive and didn't hurt my ears. Wild Wood (the title track) is a solid track, though. Shadow of the Sun sounds like it could play at the end of an episode of House M.D. and I wouldn't look it up later.
Meh
Suena bien y se deja escuchar pero tampoco me pareció memorable
The kind of rock music that I might not realized existed if it played in the background somewhere. 6.8/10
Chill, but forgettable rock music that seems to be religiously inspired. This album is more popular across the pond than in the US.
Eh
18th June 2021 Started listening on Friday but had to finish on Monday as we went away up to Leicester for the weekend to visit Adna and Joe. Slightly better bit of dad rock. Not that memorable for me to be honest. 2.5 if I could.
OK, jusy not my bag man.
Jääkligt tradit, hade satt 2,5...
A lot of this album is forgettable for me despite loving Paul Wellers other work. Fav song: the weaver
I like the Jam and I don’t mind the Style Council but Paul Weller’s solo stuff has always just felt a bit naff to me. Don’t mind a couple of tracks on here but not really an album I’d ever choose to put on (unless maybe I was having some sort of ‘dad rock’ themed party).
idk about this. I liked Sunflower and Wild Wood, but overall it was too country-folksy ish
Big meh, the best song was the 1st one because the guitar was nice but or else it was p boring
A couple of very good songs, but otherwise but great
Not particularly wild. Extremely wood, though.
ehhhhh
I can't handle the voice
Meh
Not 4 me
Kinda boring tbh
There’s a fine line between mellow and mind-numbing, and this album sprints past it. Every track blurs into the next in a fog of nothingness, like being trapped in a lukewarm cup of herbal tea. Wild Wood isn’t bad in an interesting way unfortunatelty it’s just bad in the most unforgivable way: completely, crushingly forgettable.
I've never been so bored listening to an album. And I don't mean bored like"Oh I've heard this type of stuff before." No, I mean bored like "There isn't a single solitary nanosecond of anything interesting going on here." ZERO STARS
🙄 wow, so very…whatever
I’m not finishing this, I’ve decided. This is so boring and annoying. This bitch is not a poet. He is not a singer. He is not even a competent personality. It is preposterous that I should have to listen to drivel like this during international women’s day. I’ma go listen to Lily Allen. 3.1/10
I'm really not sure about this one. There are a good few established paths for aging punks to take, but without getting too far into it, wise and poetry savvy singer-songwriter is very much one of them. And it's one where mileage varies *a lot*. Nick Cave is someone who I think is a good example of someone who is still making great, beautiful music that's slower, sadder, and more contemplative than his younger years. But Paul Weller kind of gives us the other side of the coin. I don't particularly care about The Jam, but they have a couple of pretty good songs. But now, in 1993, Paul Weller is trying to sell himself as kind of a folksy soulsman. But I do *not* think he pulls it off. This reminds me of late-era Van Morrison and Pearl Jam's rootsiest songs, with a hint of the era's Brit-pop for good measure: And I do not consider that a good thing. I don't really like Paul Weller's vocal approach, or lyrical approach, and I don't think there's much special about these songs. But what I think really dooms this album for me is that 1993 was during a new golden age for earnest, Singer-songwriter-y stuff. It was a time for exciting new artists to expand the genre, and for old favorites to re-invent themselves in exciting ways. But here, Paul Weller's entire sound is too tied to decades old ideas from music he likes for him to indulge in anything genuinely new and exciting. He puts a lot of weight on the fact that he embraces electronic influences here. But honestly, it sounds like he's just keeping it at a comfortable, unchallenging distance. He isn't willing to incorporate electronics to an extent that would allow them to actually effect how he writes these songs at all. And he just throws a cool synth over stuff every once in a while. And I think that his approach of just letting the classics run could at least be forgivable if there was anything exceptional about the performances or songs or aesthetics on this album. But it really does just feel like he spent some time listening to some 70's folk-rock and soul records and he said "I just need to model my new record after *exactly* this". This is gonna sound mean, but I really think it's just a couple of steps above listening to a decent cover band in a bar. It's not even that this is unpleasant, it's just that it's *so* unoriginal, and *so* self-important, and *so* unexceptional in execution that, aside from a couple of fleeting moments of neat sounds, I don't get anything from the experience of this album at all. This doesn't offer me *anything* I can't get from it's influences, which I think marks a total failure for what I would loosely call a genre revival record. This is almost a challenge to my grading principles. Does a somewhat listenable album with a few, sporadic seconds of interesting music skirt by on a 2, even if it has nothing to offer me? I think I'm gonna come down and say that this is where I'm staking the flag (for now) on what the best 1 may look like. It's inoffensive because Paul Weller happened to be listening to decent records, but Wild Wood feels like a functionally empty experience.
It's like music in the background of a 90s coming-of-age drama. Which means it should be 2 minutes max.
I already forgot what this album sounded like.
I don’t know how much more I’d like this album, but I’d like it more without this guy’s voice. Didn’t resonate with me at all. First half of the album I was like “this vocal type is so closely associated with white harmonica dudes & like “‘Merica Pride” songs and sure enough I got a harmonica. Takes two stars off, minimum. (His softer songs don’t fit that description, but I just found those to be pretty bland. He’s on a playlist with Nick Drake & I’m just reminded what a rich album that was in comparison.)
Shit sucks
