Fun
Naturally Good Times is the big hit but I actually prefer My Feet Keep Dancing.
I din’t think this holds up very well (maybe that’s true of most disco…) Many of the grooves are good, and the overall sound is pleasant as well, but the vocal melodies (and lyrics) are uninteresting, and most of the songs are too long to hold my interest given their relative simplicity.
Wish it had more of Nile Rodgers insane guitar
The handful of singles that came out in the late 70's were fantastic, and its great to hear this album in its entirety at last Good Times is of course the main song
Good Times is exactly that, what an uplifting jam. I challenge you to walk down the street listening to this song on a sunny day without a strut or head bob of some sort, do it, I dare you! The rest of the album, breezy and enjoyable as it was, just didn't reach the same heights that the opener did. All perfectly fine tunes in their own right, they just felt like they were missing a bit of the energy and pace that they displayed on Good Times. Chic knows how to funk, I just wish they'd funk harder with more consistency. 3 stars
I enjoyed this, didn't know that they sang 'good times' which is a very good song, the bassline in that reminded me of wham, although apparently its used in rappers delight which makes sense. I also thought it sounded like 'Le freak' which it turns out they also song. I also liked 'will you cry' later on. That being said the songs were somewhat 'samey' so not many stood out beyond this. 69/100 Score edited 28/12/25 Score edited 13/01/26
Favorite track(s): Good Times, A Warm Summer Night
Very nice.
Good album but songs too long. Its a great dancing album probably top of that list but not too high on the best ever
Some good disco songs- fun, but a little repetitive at parts.
Didn't enjoy this one as much as the other CHIC album on this list but its still discoriffic.
It was fine, just more disco
Good album
It's a risky (?!) strategy to open and album with an all-time banger of a track - the rest of the album is good quality jazz-funk-soul, but .... it does pale.
Album No. 0079 on my list. My very first proper disco album on this little 1001 album journey! I've known "Good Times" before, but all other tracks from "Risque" were fully new to me. The album was nice, but I guess I'm not too much into disco music after all. Guitar and bass work was nice and I liked the overall groove though. And I do certainly see why this album is on the 1001 album list. In addition to the aforementioned track, I'll add "My Forbidden Lover" to my playlist as well. 3/5 stars.
This has all the crucial disco tropes: bad synthesized strings, funk guitar, insipid lyrics. Pretty great!
Shoutout to Good Times for being the sample for Rapper's Delight. The other songs all start to drag around the 6 minute mark.
Good Times 3.4 A Warm Summer Night 3.4 My Feet Keep Dancing 2.4 My Forbidden Lover 2.8 Can't Stand to Love You 3 Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song) 3.2 What About Me? 3.4 Score: 3.085714286
Zuhause, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Ganz gut.
I enjoyed it. I hadn't heard if them by name but I recognized the first track.
Well, if your thing is music with boogie and without a soul, this would be for you.
Disco should come with a trigger warning
A fine and funky way to end the week but mostly forgettable.
Kinda one hit wonders for me; good mix if you like that disco vibe
My feet keep dancing, My forbidden lover och Good times är bra, resten är utfyllnad, men snygg utfyllnad. En stark trea ändå.
Repetitive, but never dull. Well-produced, charming, and fun. But not something I'd ever really think to listen to again.
Vibey. Unfortunately not as vibey as Sister Sledge. Good Times was amazing to see live at Glasto. If the whole album was that danceable, it would be 5 stars.
5/10 I never realised some of these songs were so long! What were they thinking - a very low ratio of musical ideas
Just waiting for Big Bank Hank to start busting rhymes on “Good Times.”
besides from 'good times', every song is really repetitive. it's also what i would call VOLUME music, you need it loud or less it doesn't really hit you. still had a fun time but the repetition irked me
Correcto
Pretty fun and infectious. The point of the album seems to get people to dance, and it certainly is effective. It's all grooves and vibes. I find disco music loses its luster quickly when you look at it a little closer, but this one is pleasant regardless of how critical you want to be. All the parts work well together for what they are. It's not meant to be taken too seriously, so just sit back and enjoy the show. Overall: 3.3/5
A disco classic.
i would like to give it 4 stars, since i do dig on a lot of the tracks, but i think most of them are too repetitive and long for my taste. but still good stuff
It's CHIC. I'm hovering between a 3 and a 4, mainly because I only really was enamored by Good Times, but the rest of the album is great as well.
was good but repetitive
Best: Good Times Worst: Can't stand to love you Liked songs: 6/7, 86% Light 3 This is the first time I've listened to disco critically, so theres a chance most of my points apply to the whole genre but idk. Overall a fun album that dragged on a little too long and had far too much repition within songs. Not one I see myself returning to, but a fun listen all the same
I thought Risque was a pretty good album. Disco is one of those genres that can range from pretty good to pretty terrible. Thankfully, this one falls into the former camp. This album didn't have many songs on it(only 7 of them) but they did make up for that a decent bit by making a lot of them decently long. I think this album makes about as good use of it's structure as it can but i still think it would be better if there were more shorter songs on it. The music itself is enjoyable too. Its pretty groovy and relaxing. There is a bit of that 70s disco cheesiness here but i don't think that it is anything that's unbearably annoying. I thought this album was a pretty decent listen for what it was. Best Song: What About Me Worst Song: My Feet Keep Dancing
Nice chill album met goede bass
Pretty funky. A decent jive.
Nice grooves.
Bit boring, couple of really cool baselines but found some songs were overly long without going anywhere.
Solid start and great finish. Mid-section was ok. 3.5 stars
Doesn’t do it for me
Chuck that, Nile! Good times is a perfect disco song. Bass line got Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers writing credits on Rapper's Delight. Per Wikipedia, "Queen's John Deacon reportedly used the songs bass line as inspiration for his own bass line for the band's 1980 single another one bites the dust." The ballads are fine…and on a seven song album "fine" can't afford to be making the cut.
Could Chic have existed without Nile Rodgers? Hard to imagine. He built grooves so sharp they outlasted disco itself. The rest of the album struggles to match the spark of its opener, “Good Times,” and some of the rhythms do circle back on themselves—but that hypnotic quality explains why producers have been sampling these tracks for more than forty years.
A good groove album that has been often sampled. It's definitely a product of the times it was created in, but disco-related music is generally enjoyable to listen to in small spurts. The groove drives this album from beginning to end with the running bass lines and Nile Rodgers' signature guitar strumming. I can't hate this.
Meh
Pretty good and typical disco of the era with the first track being the most famous.
Catchy! I don't know if I'll revisit this album, but I don't regret my listen 😎
Sounds of my early childhood. A fun record. 3/5
Better Chic albums
Good Times … Good Tunes 👍
You'll recognize the bass line from 'Good Times' immediately -- and it's still perfect in every way (if you're curious, that sound is probably a Music Man Stingray, a classic instrument too-often unsung outside of bass player circles). My basic impression is that the dance numbers are excellent but the slow jams go on a little long ('A Warm Summer Night' chilled in its outro jam way too long for my liking). It's all catchy, though, and Bernard Edwards is an absolute master of the electric bass guitar -- so clean, so punchy. Honestly, this is probably a 4/5 disco album but that's a bit out of my wheelhouse, so for me it's a 3/5. We'll have to let the democratic process decide whether disco is good, relative to everything else, or not.
Le freak, ces chic!
I wasn’t 100% focused while this was on, but I don’t think it was as fun as I thought it was going to be. No standouts, but cool basslines
Good album, not my favorite.
Some good rhythms, but a lot of repetition and the slow dance disco songs were as painful to listen to as ever. If not for “Good Times,” this would be a 2.
First song's a classic. Rest of it is perfectly respectable dance music. No complaints. 3.5*
3.5 You know, it embarrasses me to say, but despite being well familiar with both Good Times and Rapper’s Delight, it never occurred to me until this listening that The Sugarhill Gang were sampling Chic the whole time. It seems obvious in hindsight, but I’m not kidding when I say this was a major revelation had during my morning walk. Rapper’s Delight is a fantastic song, and so is its original form, Good Times - in a lot of ways, they feel like two sides of the same, groovy coin. I’ve said before that I’m not much of a disco fan, but I have no idea how someone couldn’t get down to a track like this - as cheesy as it is to say, it’s the exact kind of thing that makes you want to get up from your desk and start dancing around the room. Your coworkers might judge you, but hey, that’s the power of music. Despite running over 8 minutes long, it never once feels like it oversteps or loses steam in any way (unlike the extended version of Rapper’s Delight), and it’s missed once it’s over… especially considering the song after it, A Warm Summer Night. I said it before with C'est Chic, and I’ll say it again here - I just can’t get into the slower R&B tracks from the group. They’re not terrible, but they’re also not overly interesting and feel a bit like vibe killers given the groove surrounding them. So, this results in some highs and lows on the album for me, but ultimately nothing comes close to the high of Good Times. My Feet Keep Dancing and My Forbidden Lover are also both excellent, but they don’t quite scratch the same itch for me that the opener does. Still, generally enjoyable album. I went back and forth a few times if this really earned that extra half star, but hey, if you have me dancing around my apartment during work, you’re probably doing something right (shoutout to wfh saving me from the judgment of my peers).
3/5 for the most iconic bass line of all time.
Chic is always a good time. Solid album. 2.5/5
Good Times is one of the most important songs of the disco/rap era. The album is mostly a snooze fest. 2.5/5
Good Times is a great song. Rest ok 3/5
Underwhelming
The singles are good, the ballad is dreadful, the rest is just very mediocre. There's no doubting the musical proficiency on show but the songs lack substance.
not something to listen to often but fun
Vibey. Glad to hear the origins of Rapper’s Delight
Good energy, fun and upbeat, but that’s disco.
Good
7/10 songs were all repetitive and 4/4 so not musically complex, not usually my cup of tea but was lowk digging it at some points 😛, singers were very talented, the base of soul music, also very iconic for the time. fav song: will you cry
This album is decent. It’s not bad, but I don’t see why it’s on this list. It has some great moments, the first track especially, but I don’t think this album really has much going for it, there are probably much better disco albums that could have been on this list. However, I do understand why this album is important, I just don’t think it’s for me. 3/5
5/10 - it was like the other chic album but worse
I love disco BUT these tracks were too long for me. Good times is still a banger
There are only 2 first songs on Spotify, I played them at the store, good store music
This was fun. A little repetitive. But if/when the vibe hits, these are good jams.
Although, seen mainly as disco, this album is nevertheless loaded with funk and soul goodness
Sick bass lines and ultra tight super compressed clean rhythm guitars bring unprecedented levels of funk energy to the cheesy AF disco beats, corny synths, and schmaltzy strings. The ballads are a huge drag, but there's no beating the uptempo tracks on this for pure dance energy. The songs are all way too long, but that's just to keep the dancefloor pumping.
Fun and light album. I don't normally enjoy dance music all that much but I do enjoy Funk and this has elements of both.
Good like their other albums. Disco funk.
Not bad sounding music, however many of the songs overstay their welcome.
It's a bop.
“Good Times” is still a classic song. The rest of the album is good but just more of the same. 3.5/5
Good but never quite reaches the highs of Good times on the rest of the album 3.5*
Not a fan of disco, but much like their other offering we had, the impact and longevity of “Good Times” cannot be denied. Sadly I am old enough to remember this at the roller rink on my quads and dressed in white denim from head to toe complete with a fuschia/violet striped shirt and 80’s comb in my back pocket for all to see. Good Times indeed.
Not quite as good as C’est Chic, but still serves its disco-y purpose. Long jams that no doubt were written for all the sweaty studio 54s and roller rinks worldwide. Death before disco. And I suppose if I were on my deathbed, and was forced to choose a disco album to go out on…I wouldn’t necessarily complain if it was this one.
Listen up, cool cats and disco divas — Risqué is the sound of the late ’70s strutting into Studio 54 with a mink coat, a gold toothpick, and a fresh perm. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, those bad mamma jammas of funk, are back at it, laying down basslines so greasy you could fry an egg on them. But hold onto your bell bottoms — this ride ain’t all roller boogie thrills. The album kicks off with “Good Times”, which is, no joke, one of the most bodacious grooves in the history of the boogieverse. It’s the kind of track that makes you want to pop open a can of Tab, hit the light-up dance floor, and point both fingers to the heavens like John Travolta’s cooler cousin. Bernard Edwards’ bass pops like champagne corks, and Nile Rodgers’ guitar is tighter than your Aunt Linda’s sequined jumpsuit after Thanksgiving dinner. Honestly, “Good Times” is worth the price of admission alone — it’s a certified hustle anthem. But here’s the thing, sugarplum — once the glitter settles, Risqué can feel a little like that moment when you’re at the club and the DJ plays three mid-tempo tracks in a row. “A Warm Summer Night” is smooth enough to get you swaying with a mysterious stranger, but it’s so laid-back it risks killing your hustle buzz. Chic’s slow jams here are silky, no doubt, but sometimes they’re less “disco inferno” and more “fondue party at 2 a.m. with people you just met.” Don’t get me wrong — “My Feet Keep Dancing” brings the strut back, complete with tap-dance breaks that’ll have you wanting to audition for The Love Boat. But there’s a sense that Chic, masters of the groove though they are, are starting to get a little too comfortable in their satin sheets. This ain’t the wild, uncut boogie fever of their earlier records — this is Chic sipping Courvoisier and looking at their Rolex, wondering if they should leave the party early. Lyrically, Risqué does what Chic does best — it’s all champagne wishes and caviar dreams, sprinkled with winks and nods to the jet-set life. But there’s not much here that makes you sweat, unless you’re already wearing a polyester shirt in August. It’s disco with its shirt halfway unbuttoned, lounging at the bar — and sometimes, you wish it would just get out on the floor and freak out. So yeah, daddy-o, Risqué is still a good time — you just might find yourself skipping a few tracks to get to the ones that truly slap the glitter off the walls. Chic’s playing? Impeccable. The grooves? Funkadelic. But the overall ride? Let’s just say it’s a solid Saturday night… not quite the fever pitch you’ll remember forever.
Easy listening
Good Times
I feel so conflicted about this? Like, these are all good-to-great songs, and Nile invented music and all, but also I can't think of a single track on here I wouldn't cut at least a minute off the end of. Everything seems to end [continue disco groove ad lib.], and like, they're fantastic disco grooves, but we got to a point where I genuinely forgot Good Times was even still playing at least once. Plus Shine is a better track than My Forbidden Lover any day, don't @ me
Good album with Good Times Mainly chill
Solid discount album. Smooth as butter and great baselines.
It's Disco. Disco is dead. There's a reason disco is dead. Nah, this album was alright.
funky loops. dancy
Fine. Catchy, polished, but kind of mooshed into samey vibes eventually.
Wow. Right after Dee-Lite, huh? I was shocked to find a second CHIC album popped up, as I really did not like the last one. So I was very not excited to listen. Actually, this one was alright. Maybe my recent funk kick bled over to my appreciation? I don’t know. One thing that I did appreciate is they didn’t make me listen to someone eat potato chips.
Chic’s 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘲𝘶é is sleek, stylish, and undeniably influential — but for someone not fully on board with disco, the long, repetitive grooves can feel more hypnotic than exciting. The musicianship is tight, and Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards clearly know how to build a hit, but after a while, the extended song lengths start to blur together. It’s easy to respect, a bit harder to love — at least if disco isn’t quite your thing.
NICE
Cover 7 Damn some of the songs are looong. Guess that was the trend back then. At least there are only seven songs. Good album. In the right mood, yes, very chill, nice. Kick back and enjoy.
There is a lot of repetition in this album which makes it a bit boring to listen to. Good Times is the top track on here.
3.14
Einhæft, taktfast diskó. Vel gert en ekki minn smekkur.
Alright pop, almost disco music. Not my style but wasn't miserable, it was an alright change
This is #day310 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… this was a little less enjoyable than their first album, which I got on my #day102. "Good Times" is a standout, of course. The rest is kind of fine, but C'est Chic was more memorable. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day311.
Not a big disco gal but this was okay. I wouldn’t dance to this in a club, but it was fine to clean out my classroom to 🤷♀️
Disco bliss with some other songs
Two things surprized me about about this album. It's only seven songs covering 36 minutes, and there are more down tempo melodic numbers than disco dance anthems. Having been a club DJ in the early 80s I am a big fan of Nile Rodgers as a musician and producer.
The goats, I guess
This was just fine
first, an amazing album cover. second, such a good mood booster.
it's fine for what it is: a dated disco album with a first track we've heard at every wedding we've ever attended, only faded out after three of its eight minutes. which probably tells you something about it. inoffensive for the most part, a few songs running too close to syrupy smooth for my taste, and a few others running too long. "can't stand to love you" is cool because they let nile rodgers bust a little bit, and he basically invented a style of playing the guitar, which puts him in rarified air. but alas, i want more nile rodgers busting a little bit.
I promise I’ll listen to you Chic, I promise!!!!!
It’s like one 5 star song with a bunch of 2-3 star songs after it, so let’s say that evens out into a 3.
I couldn’t help but feel that a few tracks dragged on longer than they needed to. The whole thing is only 36 minutes, but it feels so much longer due to the repetitiveness of some of the songs. Favourite Songs: Good Times, My Feet Keep Dancing, My Forbidden Lover. Least Favourite Songs: Can't Stand to Love You, Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song).
Never understood the psychotic hatred that people had for disco in the 70s. Admittedly, I didn't understand anything at all as I wasn't in existence yet, but still. This genre embodies many of the things that I traditionally enjoy in music - especially in the strings department. Outside of disco I can't think of another non-orchestral genre of music where strings take such a prominent and important role. This was pretty groovy. Good Times was the highlight. The guitar on that song is funky, the bass guitar down the middle of the song is silky smooth and the piano is divine. The strings, vocal performances and songwriting is also pretty neat. A well-rounded tune that manages to make it across the finish line despite having a ludicrous track length. Nothing else on this album manages to capture the spirit or focus of that song, though there are some miscellaneous good moments. The second half of My Feet Keep Dancing sees a very good application of strings, taking on an almost percussive sound. My Forbidden lover manages to capture the spirit of the first song in a more concise package. The swinging sound of What About Me is also pretty good, even if the song does admittedly lose me somewhere around the halfway mark. Educating my ass on music once again - I'm reading the book. A strong counterargument to disco music being vapid. The bass on this album has been influential in urban music/hip-hop circles. Well, we definitely need at least one disco album on the list and I think this album is a good enough candidate. That being said, I'm mildly favourable to this music without properly liking it, which is probably the exact reason why disco drove people nuts in the first place, come to think of it. Another mystery solved.
Groovy album, one I could play at a disco party at my house. 3.5
Risqué is not as good as Chic (the album) nor C'est Chic (the album), and although 'Good Times' is a banger of an opening track, the record loses momentum in its' second half. Nile Rodgers' guitar still sounds fantastic, but even with a sub-40 runtime, its' bordering on too much of a good thing.
Fun disco
it was alright. I like the vibe
Discooooo. The first tune is one we've all heard and is a classic. The rest is real good EW&F vibes.
Bass is the star
Thought I'd enjoy it more
Not as good as the other chic album on this list
Way too much repetition on the lyrics
I would say one hit wonder.
I mean.. more upbeat but still not my vibe. My mom made me listen to this a lot growing up
Didn’t hate this as much as I thought I would.
Nice groove some overly long songs but still enjoyed
More of the same as the last Chic album, but for some reason didn’t grab me as much, maybe not quite as catchy and funky. Not bad at all.
I mean, it's disco. Massive tunes that last too long, so credit to everyone who sampled them to change it up. Legit don't know how these songs last so long, every time I check i'm like "it's only been that long?" They're tight and musically sound but man, 36 minutes that feels like an hour.
Yeah baby! The distinctive sound of Nile Rogers' Chic. It's so distinctive that I can tell his guitar work from 100 paces. That's the only problem, it's a bit repetitive, but a nice sounding repetition. I really liked this.
who says disco is dead? I'll subject my whole office to it
It’s got a good beat — you can tap to it.
Solid disco album with one stone cold banger, but overall it just isn’t my cup of tea. Still, brilliant musicianship and can’t be mad I spend some time with it.
2.5
Good, but not for me
I mean, it’s disco. It’s certainly not my favorite genre of music, and there are definitely songs that drag on for too long, but it’s still a pretty good album. Also Will You Cry is the best song. 3.5
I love me some disco, but as a full album this one was just OK. The songs are too long, too repetitive or a mix of both. Good Times should be sent into space, but the rest of this is just fun, even if a bit verging on annoying.
This was good fun. Idk if it’s a theme for disco but it’s only downside was the songs went on too long. They were pretty funky though!
Ele abre com Good Times. Muito dificil. As outras faixas não me prenderam totalmente. Apenas a faixa Good Times ! Por isso, acho justo um 3/5.
Fine 2.5
Very nice on the sunday morning. Great vibes
Funky and repetitive. 7.4/10
okay but not for me
That was interesting to hear. I was expecting soul, maybe even some jazz. I knew the first track straight away. I thought it was a bit too disco but good. I noticed the disco sound more and more. Although I grew up in that era, it was never my kind of music. And it never will be. 3/5
Nice groovy stuff here. A littel dated though
Good listen
A noticeable improvement from C'est Chic! This album is a lot less cheezy and easier to appreciate the amazing guitar and bass. It still is a disco album but it's probably the best a disco album can be for me. Plus, that bass line on the first song is killer!
++: Good Times, My Feet Keep Dancing, My Forbidden Lover, Can't Stand to Love You +: A Warm Summer Night, Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song), What About Me? 7,6/10
Enjoyable listen, good disco grooves and range between the songs. Each song basically one chorus repeated tho. The disco themed radio spotify started playing after this ended was better than the album itself
It is what it is. Not my favorite genre, but not bad, not something I'd relisten to
This is a thing, it's just not my thing.
It’s hard to just sit and listen to dance music. This is meant to dance and that’s what it does. It starts with a bang but keeps pretty stagnant after a while.
.
The first song "Good Times" is a classic. Even though it is very disco the production holds up
3.4
Disco is not dead so long as it lives in the hearts of men!
I gave this a one a few months ago, then went back and listened again. What was I on?
Short fun album that comes tearing out of the gate with ‘Good Times’. The rest of the tracks pale in comparison but still was a nice listen. 3.25/5
Disco
That’s the thing anout risco tracks, they’re too long. Some bops for sure, though, especially “What About Me”
Good times plus ostalo
I like this album because it sounds really nice. I think that the beats are nice and the voice sounds good with the background music.I like the slow pace of the second song. I don't like the way his voice sounds in the sample though. I would recommend this to people who like up beat, funky music.
Have you ever wanted to listen to some jazzy and snazzy music? If so, then this album is for you. In my opinion this album is actually pretty mid. I personally don't really like this because it is disco music and I don't like that. Another reason why I don't really like this album is because the singers voice doesn't really sit very positively with me in my head. It's too soft and when it sings those songs and lyrics, I don't like how it sounds. I would probably not recommend this album to someone else because if I don't like it then someone else probably also wouldn't. Also, I feel like people in this generation in general don't like and listen to this music. I would give this album a solid 3 stars out of 5 stars. I think that someone else would probably not listen to this without being forced.
the first song "good times" is good i like how it sounds. the next song "a warm summer night" is good too I also like how this song sounds. the last song "cant stand to love you" is also good. overall I might recommend it.
It's amazing to hear a funky and iconic song like Good Times. But other than that I found the rest of the album pretty one dimensional. I don't think I would listen again.
Risqué Lahore was Lens drag name when he lived in Pakistan in the 80s. It didn’t go well. 2.7
Basically every song was too long. Good grooves though.
had fun with this one, pleasantly surprising. too often people label a genres like disco as outdated. While disco certainly is centralized to a time period, the music itself stands up isolated from the context with which is was born.
Day405 - i wonder what kind of music nile rodgers would make if he was a twenty something now
Irtobiisit on way to go. Kylmäksi jättää siis albumimuodossa. 3/5
3.5 groovy funky. Fav song can’t stand to love you
# Album Name: # Risque # Artist: Chic # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Good times - absolute banger. Great opening to the album. The album cant live up to the opening. song. Theres some good soul and funk but not at the same standard. # Top Tunes: Good times / Forbidden Lover / WIll you cry # Would I listen to it again? Dont think so.
Good times, followed by ok times. They really knew how to take a song and extend it twice as long as it needed to be. 6/10
This is extremely cheesy, and while I like a bit of cheese, this kind of goes over the top. Lots of repetitive sounds - all the good songs sound too much like "Good Times", but none of them reach that level. "Clams on the half shell and roller skates" is an incredible lyric... this gets half a star for that alone. 3.5 stars
ok
Way too cool for me to ever have been into. A bit too clinical and clean for my taste as well. It’s OK, but nowhere close to stuff like Parliament.
Classic, iconic, and much sampled bass playing. Funky guitar work by Nile Rogers, and drumming just just grooves along. Sadly the songs themselves are vapid, but that's typical for disco.
• 3/5 • can’t help but love Good Times, but not as fond of the rest of the album
Good. Funky. Not blown away. But Good Times is the shit.
OK DISCOOOOO - Great groove and cohesive sound, but the songs feel so long and repetitive, especially near the end.
Good Times never last is the one line review of this album We kick off with one of the greatest disco songs and then meander about a bit Never bad but never Good Times
I didn’t love this album, but the musicianship was top-notch and the bass lines were great.
The bass and the guitar work were really, really nice and groovy The songs were too stretched out. 9/10 I'm all for longer and fewer songs in an album but I don't think the music was suited to that. Each song would have benefitted from being 2-3 minutes shorter in length, because after that it got repetitive and tedious. It's a shame really, it could have been a great album
Delightful
forgot to rate this one when i listened — I have a fondness for this because "early hiphop that samples disco" is one of my favorite genre river deltas and Good Times is iconic for being the sample behind Rapper's Delight. also i just rly like disco bullshit 3.5
I personally would not have done the slow love ballad on track two, but the rest was indeed good times!
Nice background music to bop along with your day. 3/5
It's enjoyable enough, but every track sounds same-ish and repetitive to the point that if you listened to the first song then you're more or less done with the album because it's just the same thing over and over. It's still nice and fun though, and I don't necessary not like the album but I suppose I wouldn't go back to it on my own accord. Fav track: Good Times
I didn’t realize I needed to hear another chic album. It’s good though. Well written talented musicians. Well produced. I’d give it 3,5 but gonna round down. Sorry.
Good times song
Even though I was not into discos when they were the thing, I still liked a lot of what was considered disco music. Not sure why, maybe it was just the rhythm and being able to just have a happy beat as part of the soundtrack of my life. This album is terrific. Of course there is the monster hit Good Times but the rest of the album is quite good and at just under 40 minutes does not overstay it's welcome.
I dug it, but it felt a little all over the place. I prefer the pure disco albums.
Previously rated: C'est Chic (3/5) *********************** More of the same from the previous CHIC album, though maybe not quite as good. Still has the long, repetitive dance songs that don't quite have the intended effect when listening in the car, but still decent stuff.
I didn't realise I was familiar with some of Chic's work prior to putting this album on... then I hit play, and felt like I'd been catapulted straight into a furniture advert. I don't know why I know the song so well, I can only imagine it's because of one of those never-ending DFS sales from back in the day. A fact I immediately learned upon listening to 'Good times' is that it's impossible to walk normally whilst playing it. I found myself bounding against my will to the rhythm.. and by the time I'd finished walking the dog I felt like my moustache had grown thicker and my hair had slowly started to perm itself. No word of a lie, when I returned home having just finished the first song, my Mrs turned to me and asked if I was okay. I responded, "Why'd you ask, sugar?" She then says, "Because you're looking like one jive motherfucker right about now, ya dig?" I span on my heels, peered over the top of my star shaped sunglasses and quipped, "Listen sister, this soul train ain't got no off ramp", and then I bounded out of the room, one cuban heel at a time. My new found groove was short lived anyway, as the next song felt a little too much like softcore porno music. It was too early in the morning for that.. I hadn't had my weetabix and my joints needed a rest after being goaded into action by the bass guitar on the previous track. All in all I enjoyed the album, and felt it was bookended by its best two songs. A lot of it felt quite samey and it meant some of the tracks just melded into background music. Luckily the album was nowhere near long enough for that to become a major issue. For me it sits between 3 and 4 stars. I'll keep it at 3 just because it was a little repetitive, there were a few too many comedowns in terms of tempo/mood and frankly, my knees can't deal with that level of funk on a sustained basis anymore.
Disco funk soul. The surprise that was the first song was absolutely perfect for my morning. I didn’t know that I needed it but when the sun come on, I absolutely loved it and he started my Tuesday off the best way possible and then the second song started and I don’t know why there is such a difference it loses its energy. I was quite disappointed but I’m putting that down to purely being because of how high the first song made me feel Rather than the second song letting me down so much. The rest of the album seem to just happen it was disco. It was fun. It was sold. It was black but it was okay. It then picks up with the last two songs and I felt like I was enjoying myself again. I even replayed the last two songs as I felt like the album finished on such a high note. No funny comments from me today just an okay album with some good songs and some nowadays would just be called fella. I’ve written this review using the microphone on my keyboard so if anything doesn’t make sense, I’m blaming Steve Jobs three stars
It was alright and think it would work better if dancing to it in a club then listening intently to it. Then the 8+ minutes runtime would work great. Still very talented musicians with fantastic production Rating: 3.4
Good, not my style really. Super influential, though, and has been sampled everywhere.
He ich has würkli nöd esoo geil gfunde. Bernie edwards rettet scho
Helt okej grej. Cool bas ändå
Mile Rodger is the master of funky production. The songs themselves left me a bit wanting, though, as a few of them maybe dragged repetitively on a bit longer than strictly necessary.
Disco
What Marco said
Few good songs. The rest is a bit underwhelming
By my own scale this is a solid 3, but I have to admit I was disappointed. Maybe I wanted less disco and more funk? Good Times was amazing, and some of the other songs were fun, but reading the CHIC bio I kept wanting to hear songs that weren't on this album, like Le Freak or stuff the produced for Diana Ross
Certainly a very influential album to a lot of late 20th and 21st century styles. Very carefree music, as is the nature of disco music. Love the basslines and Nile Rodgers’ infectious riffs.
joa, schön für zwischendurch
Pop-Music
They dragged out these tracks way too much for it to be an enjoyable album
Some Good Times indeed. Some of the tracks are so long and repetitive that it's kind of a miracle that they don't particularly feel it.
Definitely a solid disco band with some funk elements. I think when it comes to disco BeeGees will always be the king for me but some decent tracks on here and very easy to listen to. I also, and this may be a lack of knowledge or a stretch on my part, feel like this band probably had a huge influence on city pop with the synth styles and general pop songwriting. It all sounds very beachy. Not all tracks hit but the highlights for me are "Good Times", "My Feet Keep Dancing", "Will You Cry" and "What About Me".
Good disco album
I don't like CHIC. There, I said it. It's probably criminal and means I can't leave the house for fear of running into Nile Rogers performing at a festival, or put the telly on in case he's on the BBC. But there we go. I'M SORRY.
Good disco album. Good Times an all time classic
repeat listen, but can't complain about the classics
Not only is it disco, it's very repetitive, but it's also... well... it's good. It really deserves a 4 or higher but, well, it's disco. Rating: 3
prety cool, songs go long and repeat but they were still enjoyed
Early days disco fun
Disco feel
Just 40 minutes of pure vibes. Does it drag on a bit at times? Yes. Does it matter? Absolutely not! The production is also buttery smooth and clear. Take a bow Nile Rogers
Funktastic - never been the biggest fan though solid album
Classic Bernie Edwards bass and Nile Rodgers guitar, but does get a bit repetitive after a while. Good times is still a classic though.
Some funky sounds on this but gets a bit samey.
Pretty but repetitive
Great Tunes.
Dear artists, If you have “album versions” and “single versions” that are half has long, your “album versions” are too long. Very repetitive album. If I was a teen when this came out, I would have been “disco sucks” really hard. However, I might enjoy this in the right environment.
Enjoyable, fun listen with some good energy. A few songs are longer than they need to be, but I like a lot of prog rock, so who am I to talk?
Ah, yes, the true origins of Hip Hop. Mostly forgettable album, but the bass is groovy as hell throughout. Favorites were Good Times and My Forbidden Lover
This one peaks with Good Times then is just alright for the rest. The bass is consistently great. Favorites were Good Times and My Feet Keep Dancing.
Some of these songs genuinely felt like a sanity test. The rest were pretty good ig.
Ok
Quite good. Not quite as good as their previous album, but still a 3
Decent album. Would be a vibe in the 70s at a disco
Really funky. some lows but i had a good time
First things first: this is my 545th album to review, which officially puts me past the halfway point for all 1089 albums on this list. I was hoping for something great to pop up today, and I was excited to see Chic's Risqué be a milestone album for me. I loved reviewing C'est Chic several months ago, and I read Nile Rodgers' autobiography earlier this year, so I have really high hopes for Risqué. Unfortunately, I didn't love this album as much as I loved C'est Chic. Edwards and Rodgers' songwriting, producing, and musicianship are still great on this album, but the album's shortcomings are due to the success of "Good Times." Risqué starts off with one of the most dance-inducing songs of all time, but the rest of the album feels like it has tickets to a different party. The bass playing on "Good Times" is absolutely out of this world, and even with a run time clocking in over eight minutes, those eight minutes don't feel long enough. The piano, string arrangements, and lead guitar are fantastic as well, making this one of the best songs of the decade. "A Warm Summer Night" delves more into soul influences, with lyrics and a bass line that are equally sultry, but from this point on, the funk driven party is mostly over. "My Feet Keep Dancing" kicks things back up a notch with another great, yet distinctly unique, bass line, accompanied by some great keyboards. Like "Good Times," this song kept me wanting more, despite its long run time. The songs on side 2 of the album are well written, feature more great musical arrangements, and give the album more diverse sounds, utilizing a sound that's closer to soul than traditional disco. However, I think that most people would agree that side 1 is the clear winner on this album. Overall, Risqué is good, but I didn't think it lived up to what I expected from Chic. Still, I could listen to Edwards and Rodgers' guitar mastery all day, and this album's biggest weakness is that it's not just 40 minutes of "Good Times."
3.5/5
Iconic boogie music, a bit repetitive.
all time entry in the "oh! it's THIS song!" genre
This one is not their best. A dramatic drop off after Good Times, but points for including tap dancing.
chill, easy, groovy
2 Chic albums on this list was unexpected. I'm feeling ... almost exactly the same about this as their previous record - the big single ("Good Times") is awesome and of course has been kept alive in different ways by being sampled a bunch ... but the overall album is eh. Incredible production/mix, great bass/guitar, but - and maybe i'm listening through a retroactive lens here - at best it often feels like a template for future sampling (which...hmmm...) Maybe this doesn't drag as much as the previous record, so I think it's a small step up but too many of these cuts go on too long and just repeat themselves. Cut these tracks to 3 1/2 minutes and it would have been better (n.b. the 2nd side's shorter songs are easier to digest). Needed more variety in songs but also *within* the songs - e.g. maybe my favourite part is in the chorus of "What About Me" - that very low level clavinet part in the left speaker is so good - more of that and fewer syrupy strings would have been awesome. Very stereotypically 70s disco - not always a bad thing! But Chic is definitely a greatest hits kinda band for me. 5/10 3 stars
I liked it, disco isn't my first choice but it is still a fun listen.
Short, crisp and catchy disco/R&B album. Production is great, ear candy. The bass and Nile Rodgers plucky guitars are so beautiful. But that's it. Nothing much. Favorites: Good Times, A warm sunmer night, Will you cry (when you hear this song).
Yay disco! Very fun!
I dig it!
Not super my thing, but "Good Times" is a classic for sure.
I liked Good Times and then it all sounded very similar after that. It was not bad, instruments were well played. Album just sounded almost like one long run on song.
Fun disco
1. 4 2. 2 3. 3.5 Lost track of how many times they said Dancing. Great grooving song though 4. My forbidden lover. 2 Cheesy to the max 5. Can't stand to love you 2 6. Will you cry 2. Super cheesy too. I might cringe not cry. 7. What about me. Another great groove song. 4 2.78 The opening song is great and one of the best disco songs back in the day. Some of the others just seem dated and the sound is really tough for me to like. That's why I had to rate each song and give it a second listen today. Really good and really cringe worthy!
Great sound. The piano, bass, and guitar all work flawlessly together. The songs just last way too long and get so repetitive.
The bass playing is amazing on this, really groovy. I feel disco is more of a singles game though, and this doesn’t have the hit power some other disco albums have.
Pretty good, worth listening to again when the mood strikes
good times
Fun disco era tunes.
Groovy baby
So this is where the Rapper's Delight sample comes from, wild. The bassline from there is so iconic that I didn't think it would get much better from there but nearly all of the more upbeat songs (My Feet Keep Dancing, My Forbidden Lover) definitely have that same good groove. They also sound like a lot of fun to play, even if they do get repetitive. Other than "Good Times" I'm pretty sure I've heard something from "Will You Cry" in some more modern rap songs. Particularly the strings, though I can't remember what it is. The song itself is pretty good too! The songs all seem to go on too long, but I get that. Remember this stuff was being played in clubs and you don't want ot change the song every two seconds while everyone is having a good time and needing more and more cocaine. You're just gonna need to ease in to the next one and let the groove go for a while. I enjoyed this, despite the songs going on a bit the album as a whole wasn't terribly long and I never really felt like skipping anything. The basslines really make the whole thing, but I'm biased.
It's a vibe.
Bueno para su época
6/10
Love chic and Nile but didn’t love this album
Not a huge fan of the disco scene. Repetition starts to grate after a while. I think the individual songs might be ok at a wedding but a whole album felt a bit wrong.
Opener is a classic, the rest of it is pretty enjoyable but nothing stood out to me.
Disco isn't really my thing, but this album kept it fresh so I didn't get bored.
I was going to rate this one a "2", but then we closed on a house, drank champagne, and danced like madmen around the living room to this album. The danceability bumped it up to a well-deserved 3. Before the living room dance party, I thought this was the best disco album we've had to date. The songs are interesting, and the vocals are delightful. Honestly, it's just the genre that doesn't work well for me overall because the strong 2+4 drum beats are persistent and glaring in every song.
Pretty similar sounding tracks. Still funky tho 2.5/5
You'll recognize some nuggets. Overall pretty good soul album - I would not call it "Disco" but still a fun listenable dance mix.
This was ok. But probably wont listen to again from start to finish
Dance Dance Revolution
The best thing disco ever did for me was have really good fries named after them
https://www.whosampled.com/Chic/Good-Times/ Apparently it was Rapper's Delight that sampled Good Times and not the opposite *Mind blow*
Pretty nice sat out in the sun, but it is a bit of a one trick pony, and the constant repetition of the lyrics grates a little towards the end
The hits are the hits man. This was dance music to the max. "Good Times" has to be one of the best of the Era. Nile Rogers guitar work will forever have its own track and identity. But the rest of this one is just extended dance-floor filler for me.
This album really highlighted how much I can't dance. The musicianship was top notch and it was one of the most fun albums yet, but I don't think I'd throw it on unless I was DJing for a specific mood. Album Cover: B+
Didn't have time for this album like I didn't have time for this review so I am half assing both. Not meant to be listened to while sitting at your desk working.
C'était correct mais sans plus.
personal rating: 3.5/5
Disco de disco agradável.
Not a ton to say about disco. Haven't gotten a lot of disco albums, which is to the credit of the list thus far. This was fine, decent and short.
Groovy, funky, fun disco. This record epitomises the 70s disco genre, and is among the best in the genre. Each of the tracks are individually great, but as an album listening experience it can be quite repetitive. It's still a ton of fun, and easy listening though.
I don't have much to say about this one. All of the musicians are good, but the songs are a little too repetitive for my taste. There wasn't anything bad, but not much really stood out to me. I think this album would be better if every song was half the length and then the number of songs was doubled.
