Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I can't say I loved this but I didn't mind the listen. Chaotic at times and raw but some interesting sounds. Touted as a psychedelic R&B.
Not my thing. It's a high 2 so I guess that makes it a 3
It's weird, but I don't hate it.
Probably a bit too out there for me, but actually not bad. Some of it more approachable than others. I actually listened to this again since writing that and I actually started to like it. Quite interesting. Probably not going back, but think this is worth a 3
My only experience with Dr. John before this was his songs with The Band on "The Last Waltz." Crazy interesting album, it's very unique to me to have such a psychedelic album also be very clearly taking so much influence from New Orleans voodoo, songs about gris-gris and roux. Probably never gonna listen again.
I like the idea of Dr. John more than I actually like Dr. John, but still a fun listen
Weird and enjoyable.
Loved it for some background music
Odd, but strangely likeable
Good
I'd never heard this one before. Lots of really good. Some pretty decent stuff. Nothing I outright hated. Definitely weird and interesting. I won't go back to this much, but I'm glad I know of it now. This is the type of thing I was looking for when I started this challenge.
Weird, but not in a terrible way.
I didn’t mind this voodoo album, but it’s one that you have to pick your moment for. Fine to listen to in the bath, perhaps less so in the car.
Strange and spooky. I especially liked Mama Roux.
Psychedelic New Orleans hippie voodoo. Some of these tunes are pretty good while others meander too long. Dude's got a great voice for this genre, though. Depending on my mood, this is between 3-3.5 stars.
Bizarre New Orleans sound.
This is fun. It has I think just the right amount of psychedelic cheese for my taste. All of the different styles in this are kind of just stewed together, and Dr. John's style very much reminds me of Tom Waits.
Interesting without being great
That’s a specific vibe
Weird and different. Id never heard of Dr. John before and this was really unlike anything else I've heard from that time period. I don't think I really liked it but bonus points just for that.
I think the album cover I enjoyed more than the music. It wasn't bad! And I honestly liked the sort of swamp music that the Dr was leaning into. It just felt kind of short and jumbled. Certainly interesting and I'm glad it is on this list.
I almost like Jump Sturdy, I Walk on Gilded Splinters
Liked Mama Roux and Jump Steady. Lots of weird psychedelic stuff. Some started well and became unlistenable . Most songs have Yaya in lyrics. Dig the Latin grooves these cats laid down man. Walk on Gilded splinters a classic
Different but not very memorable.
It was ok
I had never listened to a Dr. John album and didn’t know the character and music were so complex and developed.
I wouldn't especially want to listen to it again, so I have to score it quite low, but I liked the style
70's psychedelia. I know Dr. John and like a lot of his music but the only song from this album I had ever heard before was "Walk On Guilded Splinters", which I always found a little creepy -- little did I know it was easily the most normal song on this record. The entire album had a bad acid trip vibe that was hard to really get into. Guilded Splinters and Mama Roux are the best songs here, a lot of the others sounded mostly like voodoo chants. Not really my thing and not representative of other Dr. John stuff.
A wild album. I love Dr John’s voice but a few times I thought the record just meandered around. I did end up enjoying it. But another listen will confirm whether I love it or not. 3/5
I like Dr Johns voice, trippy album, if I was stoned whilst listening, would have probably given it a 4
One of these albums that contains some great material (here, for instance, the first and last song) but can also be really irritating (and for that reason I prefer Gumbo or In the Right Place over this album). overall: $(1+5)/2 = 3$
Very unique album. Spacey, spooky, and funky all in one. It was a cool listen
Not bad. Drug addled and spooky but, as Dr. John's debut release, it carries historical significance. Plus it's only 33 minutes long.
Love Dr. John’s sound, he has the ability to instantly transport you to New Orleans. So unique
Fairly mad album - certainly an experience. Not sure what to think about it but I think it was worth listening to.
I can hear the actual inspiration/influence on lots of other artists in this record. Kinda cool.
I don't know what to think about this. Slightly scary at times but still kinda groovy.
Rating: 6/10
Meandering music that knows exactly where it's going. A contradiction, but it works. You can smell the swamp...and the gumbo. Come on over. There's plenty for everyone. Grab a spoon and dig in. I cannot help but feel that Dr. John was, at his core, a happy person.
2.5/5
He's a great songwriter
It wasn’t terrible but there is an underlying creepiness to this album. Was hard for me to hear the rock genre but I definitely heard the Louisiana bayou influence. Not my thing, but could be for some. Give it a listen.
Good album. Mostly enjoyable but not really my cup of tea.
Another weird album but I couldn’t help also liking it. Zydeco, Afro-Cuban, a little jazz - Gumbo is definitely the best metaphor.
ancient gold, weired in some ways, relaxing tunes, nice voice
1001 albums to hear before you die in a voodoo ritual. I liked this more than most psychedelic stuff. It seemed like it was doing its own thing and sounded more natural and less weird for the sake of it. Plenty weird though
What this list is for
I never really listed to Dr. John much, so I was thinking this was going to be like the one song I could think of, "Making Whoopie". Was not excited about an album of that. It couldn't have been more different. I actually really enjoyed it, even if it isn't a classic for me.
It starts like Captain Beefheart, then it goes his way
Groovy!
Groovy
Starts really strong, then collapses into nonsense. 3/5
Very captain beef heart
Maschinchen: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Mische: perfekte Lokalisierbarkeit, minimalistisch Mugge: ultra smooth Meinung: 3/5
Spooky, atmospheric and interesting. This album is about 98% humidity and full of gators...but I don't do enough psychedelics to really enjoy.
Liked how spooky, unique and eccentric it was. Never heard it before!
Wasn’t a big fan but this is a great addition to this list. Low 3.
Weird but I enjoyed it. 3.5
????
Bluesy music made by Louisiana swamp people. Listened to it twice. Generally like this aesthetic, but don't foresee me spinning this much in the future.
Nice album
Yeah this one is pretty weird and gets out there. It needs another listen for sure
This is music that people were obviously not ready for at the time. Dr John is an acquired taste and though not the best album it was an Intriguing and interesting listen
Sounded like the sound track to a really weird dream. Not really my type of music with how weird and spacey it is. But it definitely grew on me more and more as the album went on. Probably the first album on this list that would go from a 3 to a 5 of drugs were taken
Interessante.
Not an album I'd pick, but interesting
Kooky as all get up. Quite fun though.
Just started it and i already like it. I'm glad I've been finding all of this new music since starting this
Interesting album. Was quite prepared to hate it but enjoyed a lot of it. Some of it was bit much for me
Yea it was ok
3.5
I had never heard of Dr. John until it came up here. Very 60s psychedelic feel from the whole album. Not really my taste but do appreciate the genre.
2/7, 29%
I don't think that guy's a real doctor!
I was groovin' with it! His voice reminded me of a bayou Van Morrison
If you look up psychedelia in an encyclopaedia you'll find this album as an example. It's positively weird in a way only early psychodelia can be. Overall I'd say it's pretty good as a novelty kind of thing rather than an album in a constant rotation.
Anchored by perhaps the most popular song to cover in its generation, Gris Gris is a solid (if not a tad too zany) introduction to The Night Tripper himself. New Orleans swamp meets L.A. (and eventually the world's) sensibility in this psychedelic trip caught on wax. One cannot help but imagine oneself amongst the smoke and smog that engulfs the album cover. It's a short trip but a foundational one in the process. Favorites: Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya, Danse Kalimba Ba Doom, Danse Fambeaux, I Walk on Guilded Splinters.
Somewhat nice album, but too many moments that are too out there for my tastes. 6 out of 10
Enjoyable
Title song is great, really feels like being in a swamp in New Orleans but at times a bit mad
Gumbo Ya YA and Mama Roux are great names to tell the flavour of the songs. I'm digging the Looziana sounds but the songs that are playing to the psychedelic flavour of the day aren't working for me.
You can definitely hear the roots of Tom Waits and Zappa here. Muddy swampy vocals and off kilter melodies, quite intriguing but curiously short.
Interesting psychedelic 60's blues album. Enjoyed the listen, but probably won't listen again.
Unique album. Not sure what I expected. Fun listen but not an album you would listen to everyday.
gumbotronic
Dr. John as an actual doctor would not be a good time, I'd probably just accept my inevitable demise. I would rather not be the subject of voodoo chants and medical procedures done around a campfire, inside a tent with sketchy equipment and weird concoctions. As an artist though, he at least makes really interesting music. This perfectly captures the experience of being the victim of a voodoo cult. Spooky and bizarre. I fully expected to hate it but you know what? It's very unique and I respect that. Standout track is Jump Sturdy.
I have not really heard anything like this. Pretty spooky witch doctor music. Kind of cool though.
Weird album, but oddly funky. Not bad at all...
play that new orleans r&b psychedelia fusion white boy
The cover art does nothing to make me want to listen, but the music is like Tom Waits, Siouxsie, Robbie Robertson (somewhere down the crazy river), The Doors (L'America), and arguably the theme to True Blood. You know, swamp infused rock and roll. A fine concept album, not as enjoyable to me as the things it reminds me of, but wholly original and I can understand why it is on this list. 3.5
Voodoo beats on the Monday drive in... Full moon... Interesting flavor to start the week
Un albúm rarísimo, como de música tribal. Está interesante.
I go to Dr John for most of my prescriptions. This album is perfect for welding your own meditation bells. I feel like I walked into a large chamber bedroom with tons of velvet drapes and carpets and gold lamps. Got handed a variety of psychedelics on a brass serving tray by a moustached, young man named Aries. Then proceeded to be given a bongo drum and seated in a circle of 27 people who just finished having an orgy. They then hit record for 33 minutes straight and whatever happened, happened. All that to say, I actually enjoyed this album wayyy more than I thought. So many backup singers, so many instruments that I found interesting to listen to. There were parts of incoherent nonsense, but that was the late sixties baby! People from Nah’lens love to tell you about “the bayou”.
Well what a strange album this was. Hard to make sense of it. I do like psychodelic rock but I guess I don't know enough about it to tell if this was good or not! But I didn't hate it. I walked in the sun listening to it, quite a good soundtrack for that I guess
The Night Tripper indeed!
This is pretty forgettable. As in, I just now finished it and can’t think of anything noteworthy. I guess if you need something playing in the background at your kitschy Gulf coast saloon, you may have a use for it.
Good album.
Didn't quite get into this one but I'm giving it 3 stars for sounding like it sounds and being from the 60s.
Fascinating look at the origins of "swamp rock" which is a blend of psychedelia and Louisiana R&B.
This one got weird but was still fun.
3/5 Interesting album. Never heard anything quite like this before.
Dr. John is nuts, love it
Not really my thing
Listenable and Gilded Splinters is a proper tune, but elsewhere it's more about the voodoo vibe at times than anything else.
Interesting. Listening without drugs in my office is probably not the best way to experience this.
Interesting listen, most of it enjoyable. Probably would be enhanced with the proper mood. Perhaps it would be something to throw on late at night in a dimly lit room and a bottle of booze. Reminds me a bit of Tom Waits, which is always a good thing.
This was a weird one, interesting in places but not all of it was too my taste. Reminded me of the Spirit of Jazz in the Mighty Boosh! Definitely unique and interesting enough to justify a spot on the list.
This was an interesting album. It started out a little boring, but it picked up around the third song. I don't like it enough to give it a four, but it wasn't bad. My favourite song was Mama Roux.
I can see how others would like it.
Really experimental. Interesting but one needs to be in the mood.
Interesting. Can picture listening in a dark and smoky lounge in NOLA. Organs, winds, banjo, drums, sounds of the jungle. No stand out tracks. Good backup vocals. 2.6 Jump sturdy
Good voodooish stuff.
Definitely worth more investigation.
Its not bad. Its not great. The true definition of a Median album
Gris gris more like rizz rizz
Pure NOLA blues and voodoo.
I need to give it another listen but was digging the psych rock
Completely understand why some listeners might not enjoy this. I sorta get it, enjoyed some, but not others. 3/5
What a strange album. It's very unique but there are times where it feels like it's in a different language. The Nawlins vibe is so heavy that I don't think many people (including me) outside of that area will really vibe with it
I see why this was on the list, as it doesn't sound like any other album I've heard on this list and is pretty groovy in spots. Still, I wasn't so into it that I feel the need to dive in again. Or maybe I need a second listen to appreciate it more. Someday..
I mean, it's a Dr. John joint. It's gonna be weird. And it was. I always enjoy Dr. John for a song or two and then I'm ready for something a little more structured. I'm glad this album was short. It made it more digestible.
Dr John is weird quirky and eclectic. Is it for everyone nope.. Is there some crap on this album yep, is that some great stuff on this album yep. Should you listen to this before you die, probably not but you should at least be stoned when you do so.
Expected to hate this… and did not. That said it’s probably a one time listen, but appreciated it.
The epitome of the sound of New Orleans. Swampy and mysterious and a little creepy too.
I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. On paper I should have loved a psychedelic New Orleans album from the late 60s but it was just a little too scattered for me. I think maybe because there weren’t many strong Melodies to hook me in?
The beginning of this album had me worried, as while I don't mind talk-singing, it didn't exactly sound great in the first song, and then the second song was mostly instrumental, but it wasn't interesting instrumental. Luckily, the third song, Mama Roux, was actually pretty enjoyable, and I enjoyed my time with the rest of the album. I don't know if I think it's anything all too special. Even if this was 1968, I'm sure plenty of other artists were making music such as this, as it's obviously inspired by such. Forgive my ignorance if that's not true, though. But yeah, okay. Perhaps I'll revisit this album sometime to see if my views become more positive, as I could see it doing that.
A fun psychedelic album. Enjoyed the tribal sound.
good, some of the songs are too "out there" for me, if it was longer it would be 4/5.
Perhaps novel at the time, but kind of boring, too hippie.
Super funky and cool, however need to be in the right mood for it.
Delightfully weird
Pretty interesting stuff! Not exactly my vibe, but I do appreciate it for what it is. I liked some of it, but not all of it.
Weird, not in the right headspace for this
Dr Bloody Congo! A deafening, painful, shameful roar.
Funk psicodélico. Ni fu ni fa.
Funk psicodélico. Ni fu ni fa.
Hmm. Lots of sounds. Some of the songs are good, and enjoyable. There are a few songs where I’m not sure what going on.
Interesting and psychedelic. Not exactly my taste but well made.
Surreal enjoyable.
bit weird and waily, but not actually that bad
Quite nice.
A folk/soul hybrid. Singing and spoken word delivery make for an unusual album.
Pros: - The production is really interesting. The panning on the first track is super wide and only gets more intriguing as the song goes on. The first minute and a half or so is mostly in the left ear, and then the next minute and a half is mostly in the right. That's something you don't really see too often. - I like the vibey moody sort of world of sounds that this guy is weaving on this album. Misc: Overall I liked it! Cool album from a band/act that I haven't heard of before.
I expected much different, more piano New Orleans jazz, but this was entertaining.
Is this... psychedelic Cajun weed smoking music? Is it Cajun funk? I really can't pin down exactly what this one is, but that's part of its charm. Worth a listen for sure, but wouldn't revisit every track. However, the closing track was excellent so I'm bumping this up a star. Most songs here felt a bit dull and ambling to me, but that one was worth the price of admission. Fave track: "I Walk on Guilded Splinters"
Love the doc's new Orleans rag tag sound
Good vibes, but nothing special
Another artist I've never heard about. 3.7% of Kid Rock's persona/style could be traced to this record, I think. But I won't hold that against Dr. John. I'll be honest, spoken word over ramshackle blues music isn't really my thing. But I gave this one a fair shot and I'm glad I did. There is a a tinge of the tropicalia musical style on songs like "Mama Roux." I'm into that.
Psychedelic bayou stomp.
I had watched the show "Treme" on HBO, this reminded me a lot of that, but like the previous generation. I think that's just because of some of the dated production. I like the false ending on the last song, that was a bit of a surprise. But honestly this sounded very dated. Not surprising as it was 1968. I like a few songs by Dr. John, but this whole voodoo thing seemed kinda... goofy to me. I get what he was going for, but it just didn't connect with me.
I enjoyed it more than I thought I might. He's definitely got a distinct voice but it's also familiar, and more than because I know a couple of his later hits. A bit of Sam the Sham, Van Morrison, or War? Feels like 60's psychedelia with a cajun twist. Some cool beats and some nice vocal work (from Dr. John and his backup singers). First and last tracks were my favorites. Again, enjoyed the album but not sure how many times I'd go back for another listen.
Interesting album. Not something I feel I'll need to come back for, but it definitely sets a chill, funky mood. I liked the opening track, Mama Roux, and the closing track in particular.
Very interesting Psychedelic album. Hard to believe this came out in the 60’s sounds a lot like Tom waits. Maybe a little dated now.
Very unique and Cajun feeling album. Favorite song was probably Jump Sturdy.
4/7/22 Fun Cajun vibes! Makes me want some crawfish. I like the voodoo feel but I couldn’t see myself actually listening to this. Very unique and cool vibes. Would like as background music. Favorite song: Gris gris gumbo ya ya
weird
7/10 Best song - Dense Kalinda Ba Doom
An odd album even for that time. Not sure how much I actually like it as such, though. Good, but not one I'd return to often.
Fun album for drinking on the weekend.
3. Mins
Interesting vibes
Just to keep review in place. I did like his last album
The first time I heard this, I thought it was an odd album to have on a list like this, but it is starting to grow on me. Getting better each time I hear it. 3/5.
7/10
Hlustaði tvisvar og hún vann á. Margt töff, hljóðblöndunin skemmtilega hrá og flott stemning. Mér finnst Dr. John sjálfur bara ekki mjög skemmtilegur söngvari.
New Orleans Blues at it's darkest and most soulful, did like this Genre defining work. The Classic "I Walk On Guilded Splinters" the highlight for me. Don't have it in my collection but well worth a listen and rightfully in this lis
Solid some standards
Pretty weird album, but also weirdly not that bad.
I kind of liked this, actually. Very odd, but not bad. It's between a 3 and a 4 for me. I'll go for 3 since it is a bit less appealing than others I've rated 4 stars.
Weak 3
It was a solid 3/5 stars.
This was a nice change of pace and I loved some of the sounds, but it had a lot of issues as well. I found the group vocals pretty grating at times, and the poor production did not help. 6/10
-This was odd. It was a psych rock-esque album, but just not very exciting
Voto 3
i had fun
Way too psychedelic for my liking although Dr John has some really good music. It must be 1968.
Pretty forgettable
Good. More my style.
Gris-Gris is the debut album by Dr. John (aka Mac Rebennack) and was released in 1968. This 33-minute LP falls under the following genres: New Orleans R&B, psychedelic rock, swamp rock, and zydeco. The track list is as follows: Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya Danse Kalinda Ba Doom Mama Roux Danse Fambeaux Croker Courtbullion Jump Sturdy I Walk on Guilded Splinters This album opens with "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya," with Dr. John's raspy bluesy acid-casualty voice and subtle guitar and drums. Dr. John sings about his remedies while backing vocals carry the song along a smooth, chill vibe. The next track, "Danse Kalinda Ba Doom," opens with mandolin strums and more backing vocals. This track has a fun, positive, dancy feel... "danse" in fact! Track #3 is "Mama Roux," a smooth song about Dr. John's queen: "The Queen is comin', ooo, un ba may Queen is coming to way pocky way" Backing vocals sing "mama rouuuuux" while simple percussion and keyboards fill out the song. Track #4 is another "danse" song, "Danse Fambeaux." This track features more mandolin with some funky whistling. Folksy, story-telling lyrics carry this song while the backing vocals do a lot of the heavy lifting. This is a fun song. "Croker Courtbullion" comes next. This song features some funky instrumentation and bongo work. This track is an instrumental piece of chaos (with some backing vocals chanting the song's namesake), with constant percussion and bass work mixed with electric guitar and a maraca-like beat. The guitar work is very fun. "Jump Sturdy" is the penultimate track on this album, and at 2 minutes and 20 seconds, it's by far the shortest. Dr. John sings about a lady: "She came out the swamps like a crazy fool (Jump sturdy) Jump sturdy jump sturdy was her name She came out the swamps like a crazy fool" This track is very folksy, with the backing vocals carrying the chorus, and a cool banjo and bass guitar keeping the rhythm. This is a very fun story-song, a shame it's barely 2.5 minutes! Dr. John closes his album with his longest song at 7 minutes and 37 seconds. "I Walk on Guilded Splinters" has been covered by countless musicians, and it has critical acclaim. Critic Richie Unterberger wrote that "I Walk On Guilded Splinters" was "the album's most durable song, a creepy voodoo soup that both smoldered with ominous foreboding and simmered with temptations of sensual delights." This track is definitely creepy and definitely the album's strongest track. Great production and a fun backing band give this track its earned recognition. Favorite song: Jump Sturdy Honorable mention: I Walk on Guilded Splinters
It began to grow on me after the second play, but it's not really my type of thing. Reminds me of Screamin' Jay Hawkins/Captain Beefheart. Also very pleased and surprised to discover that 'I walk on gilded splinters' was a Dr John song - love Paul Weller's version from Stanley Road.
An easy 3 in the end. Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya, Walk On Gilded Splinters and Jump Sturdy are all great. Not bad for an album with only 7 songs on it. Groovy in the purest possible sense. ✌🏼
I like his later stuff better. This was maybe a little too weird for me.
Pleasantly surprised by this. Some of the better psychedelic music I have heard.
This one was interesting. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t really love it all that much.
Really fun groovy stuff, sounds like they had a blast while making it
Zanimljivo skroz, nisam ranije cuo
It's different, nice, interesting, nice New Orleans Psyc rock?
This was incredibly weird, and I didn’t even like a lot of it. It was a type of music I’d never heard, though, and it was pretty short, so no real complaints
Grimy, dive bar jives. Seems like a bit of a historical oddity
Weird swamp rock. It was fun, but I was glad the album wasn't any longer than 33 minutes. Best track: I Walk on Guilded Splinters
Nice swampy rock. A slightly better album cover. RE Tom Waits - Idk what the hell he’s saying but I am living. The things he does with his voice are fascinating and the production is very bare and caustic.
The chanting is kind of interesting. Not sure whether I'm feeling it though.
Not horrible.
Interesting record. Probably wouldn't listen to it on a regular basis, but it was interesting...
This album was an experience for sure. One I didn’t really need to have. Perfect music for a seance or voodoo ritual if I ever find myself partaking in one.
This album has a black magic kinda of tone all throughout the album. By the end of listening, I felt like I should be sacrificing a chicken and praying to Jabu (Ala Major League). The beats were funky and somewhat enjoyable, but this dark tone followed each song. Not something I’ll ever listen to again, but worth checking out once.
Ugh, that was unpleasant. Too much wierd for me. Nothing connected, nothing positive stood out.
Dr John: I’ll give this album credit, this does immediately transport me to a rocking chair on a porch in the Mississippi Delta, my cousin Andre (we call him Sawbones) is cooking an unholy amount of jambalaya, and I’m just kind of waiting for a gator to come out of the swamps so we have some more meat to add to the pot. But besides the lovely visual this provides me, the music does next to nothing. Very bare. Quite unique, Dr. John’s voice is unlike anyone else’s. But that’s not a compliment, necessarily. Not my style, 3/10.
3/10
Some good moments, but a ton of super annoying ones. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing
Super experimental, al punto que agota.
Some songs are bluesy and solid. Others are just weird / nightmare music and are really hard to get through (e.g. Croker Courtbullion).
Without the singing, this would be a 3 or 4 star. But Dr. John's vocal style just reminds me of a middle aged white dad in sunglasses and a polo shirt with the collar popped proving to his kids he's cool at a blue bar in a 80s movie.
Feels kind of like a southern fried Tom Waits. Maybe a bit more rhythmic, but certainly not more enjoyable. The fact that he was kicked out of choir as a kid says something.
These reviews played in my face 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 listened to most of it until I got tired
Kinda interesting but not enough to tell someone they have to listen to it.
Spaceat. Vodoo style lugn rock med psykedeliska inslag? Blev paranoid av att lyssna. Knäppt.
it reminds me of a guy getting stoned in his basement and thinking he's a musical genius while straight up ripping off traditional Creole music. if you're going to appropriate another culture for your own benefit, at the very least, make it good.
that weird bloke at the pub open mic who insists he's invented a new style of music and everyone nips to the bar when he starts playing
Pretty cool, but mid-listenability, 2.5
Umm strange album. Not bad necessarily but I don't know when I'd have occasion or interest to ever listen to it again.
Not sure who this was for. Occasional grooves but nothing worth listening to more than once. Certainly not top 1000 material
Not for me. Jump sturdy is a decent song but the rest just don't do it
Meh. Didn't move the needle for me at all. Sounded like it either influenced Tom Waits of was influenced by Tom Waits.
I wanted to like this but I didn't particularly enjoy it. Maybe its worth hearing for what I imagine is a pretty distinct New Orleans sound. I'm not sure. The recording quality seemed not so great and I feel like the backup singing was bothering me. It's been a week between listening and rating
Weird, and not always good weird. I think he probably influenced other people I'm not particularly a fan of.
Creepy album, felt like Tom waits. I wouldn't often be in the mood for this album 2/5
Even though I reactively rolled my eyes when I saw the song title "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya" and have never really enjoyed Dr. John's music, I did my best to keep an open mind. But there's no getting around the fact this does nothing for me, or that I picture Dr. Teeth from the Muppets when I think of Dr. John.
okay, this wasnt in my lane, but at least it was listenable.
I knew this was going to be weird based on the only things I know about Dr John, which is that he looks and sounds like that, which I first learned from a podcast where somebody played him as a character and then confirmed when I watched The Last Waltz.
The New Orleans creole came out in every note. I love New Orleans but I didn't really care for this.
2.25 - Fine, but not really my thing. This is two in a row where I thought it was a different artist (Dr. Dog).
Sometimes I really wish there would be an explanation for every album on this list WHY it found its place here. This is one of those albums. There is no obvious reason on Wikipedia. Listening to it does not show anything special.
Maybe i need to give it another go but didn’t massively enjoy I first listen and found myself getting abit bored. Not really my cuppa tea. Appreciate the talent though. Favourite track by far was jump sturdy
Man they did a lot of drugs back thern. Good fun record tho
I was interested at the very beginning but that went away fast. Then I was just bored/ and a bit bothered.
474/1089 - Sounds like Lou Reed with slightly better instrumentation.
Rien de très intéressant
Nah, he’s cool though.
Some songs were okay but mostly seemed like a bizarre voodoo themed album that fell short of what Id want from something with such a theme
2.0
I felt like I had alligators coming for me while I was listening to this one
Oh man. Pentangle yesterday? Gris-Gris today? Record Store Guy has taken over the project! I predict that tomorrow will be someone feeding his guitar into a wood chipper. Important album. A little silly. Sort of like eating your rock and roll spinach.
Crazy crackhead making music in the Deep South type of vibes.
croker courtbullion had me so confused like what am i listening to.... this album was just kinda noisy? not my favorite
Not sure I've ever heard something quite like this. Swamp/bayou rock with a lot of ambient and spiritual-adjacent effects make for an interesting listen, but not the most entertaining thing I've ever heard. Cool project piece, but nothing I plan on revisiting. Top tracks: Croker Courtbullion, I Walk On Guilded Splinters
I actually like The Doc's voice and vocal style, but this album is a failed experiment that didn't chart anywhere, but was praised by critics upon rerelease - can't say why. It didn't get better.
Meh.
Hmmmmmmm. Not sure
Not as bad as I was fearing it would be. Not good enough to keep any of it in my collection.
4/10 - not objectively bad, just slightly weird hippy rock from its time
I'm not sure what this was, but I didn't like it.
Not my favorite, but an interesting listen. Can definitely hear NOLA and the melting pot of cultures present
What did I listen to
not my thing
I do actually know who Dr. John is and I've heard some of his stuff. None of it is stuff I like though. Cajun voodoo music is just so far off from my musical heritage.
Did not quite understand this one!
Super interesting and unique, a blend of many different styles. A bit too abstract for my liking… Fav song is ‘Jump Sturdy’.
Eh, it's whatever.
It was fine for one listen
Not my taste at all.
This was weird. Not bad, but strange and the songs had a very similar theme.
He got a voice on him, that man. Giving Tom Waits in rain dog but leaning a little more into witch doctor. But it wasn’t really my thang. Accompanied me to and from the Carnegie library though. Merci pour your service.
Not a fan of jazz.
One of the weirder albums I’ve listened to from this, one of the better ones though? Not really
Okay, I listened to Dr. John, can I go now? How does a guy make a Cajun album with titles like “Gris Gris Gimbo Ya Ya” and “Danse Kalinda Ba Doom” - sounds exciting! - and dump this half-awake, shitty-production, slow-ass boring record in our laps? Is he always like this? Is he on a mission to make people hate Louisiana music? Wait - is he gentrifying it? Please tell me how this “Doctor” - where’s your degree from, Hollywood Upstairs Medical College? - has stayed popular for decades.
I only liked the first song and I added it but others were kinda ass
jump sturdy lowkey peak but this album is too advanced for little old me
I'm sorry but I'm not taking whatever you're taking
Bit weird. Is this jazz? Felt like jazz in places. Gilded Splinters is a great tune and leaves me feeling a strong 2, where for much of this album it was a weak 1.
This album is a strange one for me as I didn’t particularly care for it, but I cannot find one single fault with it. The African influences of Creole culture are on full display. One track even going so far as to take you to the jungle with animal noises, giving an almost claustrophobic feeling. The instruments are incredible and fit together perfectly. Dr. John and his backup vocalists create a wonderful call and response setting every song into an almost ethereal place. Yet, I just didn’t enjoy it. Admittedly, that’s probably more on me than Dr. John. He’s clearly a very talented artist, and this album was more artwork than chart topper. I just didn’t get it. I still don’t know what a Gris Gris man is despite his explanation. All I left feeling was that I couldn’t trust such a man because he clearly plans to drug me and leave me in the swamps.
I like Dr. John, but this wasn't my favorite album.
What a strange album. This sounded like Bobby Boucher from ‘The Waterboy’ started an experimental voodoo psychedelic funk band. Almost exclusively spoken-word singing except for a couple songs with background singers. Lots of trippy music that was interesting, but not particularly good. I’ll give it a 2/5 for the effort, but this is something I’ll never listen to again
Remember the scene in Across the Universe where Bono skulks around with a microphone muttering about how he's the walrus? Kind of reminded me of that. I know having a built-out stage persona was a big thing in early psychedelia. I just don’t think this has the instrumental muscle to sell it. Probably had to be there.

Guy’s voodoo powers are for real. Even though he and his name were staring right at me I somehow managed to think he was Dr Hook and I had all sorts of ‘hook’ puns ready to go so he’s definitely cast some kind of voodoo curse on me even from the grave. This is certainly very swampy and shamanic with witchy lady backing vocals throughout. Unfortunately it’s too swampy and the songs are never that interesting. They’re like Hobo Beefheart doing Monster Mash level novelty music for a half hour straight. 2 stars.
Too weird
Pretty weird
Very odd. Seems almost a parody of itself.
Too psychedelic noise for my tastes, but could have been worse.
Hard one to get through.
Listened on the drive home from the mall. Not for me. Didn't get the spooky vibes other talk about. Don't like long jammy improv sections that just go on and on. I just don't really enjoy this era of psychedelic music. At least it was short.
Mama Roux Croker Courtbullion (random duck and bird noises?) Jump Steady I think I’d enjoy this one more with a few more listens. Didn’t fully get into it but it was OK.
This is definitely some country, down-by-the-bayou music. Not bad but not my thing.
I tried to figure out why I like something like Velvet Underground or Tom Waits, but wasn’t enjoying this Dr. John album. Maybe there was something about the time it came out, or the New Orleans music scene that would help me understand how to enjoy this album. But I didn’t really get anywhere. It just sounded sloppy and grating, with a few brief moments of musicality. I didn't know what the lyrics were about. I think he gave a few recipes in there, but that's all I could gather. So I'll give it a 2, which I guess is the rating that means "I didn’t like this, but I also don’t think it's contributing to the downfall of human culture."
I'm curious why they picked this album rather than the one with Right Place, Wrong Time... Anyway, do you like weird understated melodies with psychadelic spoken word poetry and harmonized backing vocals all about drugs and sex? How about long instrumentals with lots of percussion and more of the hippy dominated backing vocals? Then this is for you. Alas, I'm not really into that, so this was kind of a miss. Maybe if I ever go on an extended ayahuasca trip I might change my mind. Side note: I never knew Dr. John was a white dude.
A weird experience.
Potential, but not so good after all
Ugh. The good songs were not good enough. 2.5
I liked the R & B tracks but the rest was meh.
Weird as…
Not sure what just happened ...
