I really wanted to like this and Shoegaze in general, but it always seems to fall just short of my expectations.  It's like let's get an electric guitar and go crazy with effects, but unsuccessfully.

It was...okay? Not in the same league as 'Loveless'.

Need to be baked out of my gourd when I listen again but was pretty good while sober.

My first My Bloody Valentine album (weirdly late to jump in, but thus spake the Album Generator). Immediately: down-mixed, dreamy vocals underneath lush, beautiful guitar textures. Nothing roars and dips and wobbles in quite the same way (maybe Dinosaur Jr.). Drums & bass are steady. Lyrics are apparently important but totally inaudible to my ear. Just more atmosphere. This isn't my jam. This bad has clearly been influential (apart from having heard the name repeatedly in my quarter-century playing guitar). Come for the lesson in the beauty of saturated audio circuits adding just the right overtone chaos to chords. Normally, I'd tell you why to stay, but I didn't.

Loveless is definitely one of the greats. Even though I didn't love loveless, I remember this one being a disappointment. Look forward to listening again. 1000% does not need to be on this list however. Everyone is good with Loveless. Trust your readers to slightly think for themselves??

this wall of absolute noise only seems to work for me when i am absolutely knackered and can’t move and need to numb my pain. the noise is weirdly comforting at times. i didn’t enjoy this as much as “loveless” tho so it’ll only get a 3. i imagine “loveless” may be a 4 or a 5 once i get it. ‘only tomorrow’ and ‘new you’ were tracks that stood out for me.

This was similar to the other My Bloody Valentine album I recently got (maybe a little better). I like this kind of thing, so I was happy. 3.5-4

Asså va fan. Det är inte ofta man vill att det bara ska ta slut. Men det här var fan extra plågsamt. Längtar tillbaka till the residents som åtminstone måste ha förstått att de är "speciella". En oljudsvägg. Det finns inget att "greppa" tag i. Jag undrar om detta är det närmaste man kan komma som låter som kaos, det känns så i hjärnan efter ett par låtar iaf.

Jag brukar gilla suggestivt och lite trip-hopigt sound som ju delvis kan skönjas här, om än i en hårdare och punkigare form. De glimtarna är dock få och i övrigt är det mest plågsamt långtråkigt faktiskt.

Solides aber anstrengendes Album mit destruktiver Attitüde. Es ist keine Musik die Spaß macht aber deswegen trotzdem auch gute Aspekte vorweist.

I will say this album is no Loveless but I don’t think it quite deserves the hate it gets. It’s a great ambient album still and personally an enjoyable listen for me.

Comparado con el anterior (Nowhere de Ride), este me ha parecido más interesante musicalmente, con composiciones más llenas de capas y efectos, más complejas en general, pero sin salirse del sonido atmosférico, distorsionado y sostenido de su género. Pero le tengo que dar mala nota porque no entiendo qué pinta en esta lista. Nowhere y otros álbumes shoegaze de los 90 tienen sentido porque fueron pioneros, pero este álbum es del 2013 y no aporta nada nuevo. Cada vez estoy más desilusionado con esta lista y su sesgo británico. Este libro es una excusa para que unos cuantos críticos soberbios hablen de su música favorita, más que un esfuerzo sincero por recopilar los mejores álbumes de la historia. Una lástima.

Thick fuzz, heavy reverb, slow tempos and grinding churning rhythms, ethereal vocals and lead guitar melodies struggling to escape the event horizon of the dense sound. Good at what it is - noisy textural psych best played loud on a gloomy evening. A welcome new album from a cult band whose reputation grew lots during a long time away, but not one I'd call essential in any way. A few highlights but also a couple of real torpid stinkers that just draaaaaaag onnnnnnnn and the whole thing is pretty monotonous.

This is my bloody valentine? People like this? I kept begging for the next song and then regretting it when I got there. Awful. Best: ??? Worst: ???

Shoegaze has the effect of both sounding amazing and calming while uncomfortable and noisy at the same time. I enjoyed it, the soundscape it produces is so hypnotic, but sometimes it creates a fog and it becomes a bit annoying Best song: who sees you Worst song: wonder 2 Cover check: Washed out dark blue and pink colors gives the album a very melancholic and distant feel

If you love FUZZ you'll love this!

I find this a questionable addition to the list. It wasn't off-putting in any way, but it certainly got boring after a while. Its importance seems to come more in the reunion and release of a multi-decade album. Shoegaze emphasis on space will never match post-rock's efforts in making space meaningful.

The dissonant and cacophanous portions are a relief from the sublimated, unfocused, muddy remainder. I didn't hear a reason for this band to have reunited.

Sounds like someone fell asleep on an effects chain and just decided to release the result. It’s all fuzz and haze, no hooks. Just droning guitars and a vocalist that sounds like she's whispering through a pillow. The vocals drift in like a bored ghost and then vanish before you can care. lol at first I thought there was something wrong with my internet connection or something? They drone in a way that sounds like static. I felt like I had to try hard to hear the melody. But the melody wasn’t interesting enough to be worth effort.

Loveless is a mesmerizing drone of excellence, a show gazing masterpiece. Why then MBV? To recapture lost glory? Money? Can anything match Blown A Wish? No. Soon? No. I can see if they musically went in a different direction but this is just an inferior attempt at Loveless 2. Skip.

A lot of people complained that mbv is just noise and lacks any substance, but I feel like you need to be in a certain state to appreciate it. I find "m b v" soothing when I'm feel anxious or tied down despite its unsettling demeanour. There's something about its ambience and grittiness that is extremely comforting. It's a fantastic album for dissociation, or just to play on a rainy day. 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳, I wouldn't listen to my bloody valentine as a pastime, as the band's discography tends to be super overwhelming to my ears. Their recordings are incredibly loud, intense, and heavily processed with distortion, tremolo, reverse reverb and flanging. 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳 fatiguing if you're not familiar with the shoegaze genre! I would also like to mention that I find three mbv albums making the list a bit excess: Both "Isn't Anything" and "Loveless" only contain a handful of good songs and "Souvlaki" by English rock band Slowdive would've been a greater inclusion.

NICE. not their five star classic but a great record from them. If you need to feel bathed in sonic waves. Or feel deep unexplainable emotion. Or love loud guitars then these peeps are a must

i have heard loveless, wasn't really my thing, shoegaze rarely is so..... let's see she found now is ok, i like it, soothing, just maybe not my thing i really just don't like loud guitar noises im sorry shoegaze fans i hate you all i hope you're happy with this music but i am definitely not someone release from the guitar hell that is only tomorrow pleaseeeeeeee man i'm not having fun right now. this is just not my thing. and what do you mean it's only the third track dude what fourth track's ok. im just numb to this at this point i can see why someone would like new you. kinda reminded me of cocteau twins why does in another way sound like that :( . i feel like this is the heavy brach of the genre. this song is to shoegaze what heavy metal is to metal. yes? and nothing is is to shoegaze what thrash metal is to metal. i actually kinda like this, but i would like it more if it wasn't three minutes of literally the same sounds over and over and over again final track. can't wait to finish this honestly. the end is interesting. space sounds. overall, just really not my thing. i was kinda hoping that listening to this would change my mind on shoegaze as a whole, like something would click. but no. everything's the same. this is really just not for me. which reminds me, i feel kinda bad giving this a low rating just because i don't connect to it. i think bad ratings should be for things that i find bad. i don't find this to be bad necessarily. just not for me. the second half seems more experimental so that is interesting. i can see how someone might like this but hey, for the 20th time, i am not that person. bye.

Okay, maybe NOW I understand the thing I say every time about “past their prime albums CAN be great.” This was such a great surprise! And I feel like I understand mbv and their entire web of influence so much better now. Thank you for this one, list!

When it comes to shoegaze, it feels like people have always pitted My Bloody Valentine against Slowdive, and decided MBV is the better of the two. This being the 2nd MBV album on the list, I can't for the life of me understand that reasoning. Really messy album overall sonically. Not nice at all to listen to. Despite being from 2013 the mix is really bad to my ears with too much noise and rattling. The vocals are intently muffled out and purposefully hard to make out. But I think it's overdone completely, and since it sounds like it sits in the same range as the rest of the instruments it all turns to a mess. No good hooks or anything in any of the songs to latch onto on this record, it's all just a wall of sound. Very disappointed actually since I view myself as someone who enjoys Shoegaze, but this just doesn't cut it at all.

This album ranged from passable to downright horrible. Not the biggest fan of shoe-gaze but it's usually ok as background music. This album had a few chill tracks like "If I Am" but i just can't get over they use of effects on the guitar. "Who sees you" is the worst offender of this, with the jarring effects like a "Wah Wah" on the guitar making it impossible to focus on anything else. Was thinking of giving it a weak 2 around "in another way" but the last 2 tracks cemented it as a 1 star.

This was the culmination of someone thinking fuzz was cool so more fuzz = more cool. It is not. Add in mumbled moans as vocals and uninspired song writing and this is an album that I couldn't get through. Boring and unexciting. I thought I'd add a few points for some interesting atmospheric keyboards in a song, but then the interesting part got old after 2 minutes of the same thing--and the song had another 3 minutes to go. That's when I decided this album was a list cause. 1/5

Where Loveless is considered peak shoegazing, My Bloody Valentine seamlessly picks up where the left off after a 22 year hiatus with MBV and even evoles from shoegaze to what shoegaze can be while including more drum and bass, and industrial repetition.

Lyrics? Who knows. The vocals are here for melody and texture. The walls of sound make this more of a set of feelings rather than songs. I just think Shoegaze is really cool. Not quite as good as Loveless, but there isn’t much that is. Favorites were She Found Now, Only Tomorrow, New You, and Wonder 2.

mY bLEEDING vESTIBULAR At first, I thought my hifi was broken, then after checking, I realised it must be their instruments or the recording studio. Resonates all wrong with me, uncomfortable listening, almost like bad ASMR… is that a thing? Is that the point?

I appreciate that they're doing something different but I didn't enjoy it at all. The album is split into thirds with some stylistic differences between them, but they all feature droning distorted guitars and little in the way of traditional song structure, melody or understandable vocals. I can see why people like it but it's not for me.

I don't dislike MBV, but I can't see through this to where the music is.

I’m in a group chat where the other members are excited about My Bloody Valentine touring for the first time in a decade. This is my second MBV album and while I liked it more than Isn’t Anything, it’s confirmed my hunch that I won’t have FOMO if they all go without me.

Holy distorted guitarsound! I am kind of lost on what to say about this album other than that. The singing is so so so low volume, the drums and bass is in the middle and then they guitar is twice as loud if not even more. I couldn't get in to this att all.

Another classic band, such a sleeper that was overshadowed by the grunge movement. However, their classic album Loveless is very hard to overshadow as their best album.

My thoughts kinda flit between: "wow this is so cool, they really push the boundaries of what guitar music is" and "ok getting bored of this one now, it's just noise". 3* for mixed feelings then I think I prefer bands like Jesus and Mary Chain, Teenage Fanclub and Ride with a bit more melody to offset the fuzziness. But I don't hate it

I thought "Loveless" was rather brilliant. This isn't bad but it doesn't have the same edge as "Loveless", it's a bit more ambient, which doesn't work as well for these guys in my opinion. That said, it's great to see something of this quality come out so much later, I know I was surprised when this was released.

drone, noise, shoegaze ... not worth the 17 year wait

mbv claim to fame must be the heavy low grade background noise behind every song. I think the reason this one made the list was because of the 20 year break between albums. Their pre-breakup music has the same undertone drone. Not for me, I like the beer way better than their music. (2.1*s)

I'm not really into shoegaze but I can see that MBV possibly had some pioneering angle in the early 90's. What I'm not getting at all is how this is critically acclaimed or even remotely interesting in 2013. This is only on the list because of their long hiatus. I do like how the vocals become an instrument of their own since they're entirely incoherent. I can't pick out a single word on the whole set. Best song is "New You" and it still isn't even good. Would give it a 1.25 but downgrading a quarter due to the terribly uncreative album art and lame album lame. 1.0 it is.

My bloody hell...this was not what I had hoped. Long drawn out noise with the singer either in a wind tunnel or too far from the microphone. A glimmer of hope on the instrumental "nothing is" but quickly back to bad with what could be worst song, "wonder 2." How much worse was 1st version to not make it? Critics are up their own ass to praise this as a top album of the year. This put me in a coma...m b v = must be vegetable or must bring valium to enjoy...0.87 stars.

Maybe I'm missing something here because what I got was a somewhat pretentious collection of experimental noise rock instead of something that was "potentially timeless", "absolutely breathtaking" or "utterly contemporary". Not sure what makes this "universally acclaimed" but consider me a skeptic. This album reeks of hipster bullshit rhetoric from critics about how "moving" and "deep" it is. Second half of the album gets a little better as it falls into some more melodic shoegaze songs that at least have a semblance of rhythm and musical structure, but even that is being a little generous. There's certainly worse on 1001 but not sure MBV is anything for me to write home about. Maybe I had to be there when My Blood Valentine was evidently "pioneering" the shoegaze genre. This album is "decidedly mediocre at its best" and "quite bad in its execution" by me. 1.34 stars

Они преобразили шугейз до идеального состояния и создали свое уникальное звучание, навивающее атмосферу искренней любви, тех самых беззаботных дней и ее влюбленных глаз. Само звучание похоже на то, как бы звучали Radiohead, если бы они выгнали Тома Йорка из группы и поставили на первый план идеи Джонни Гринвуда. Ведь в отличии от Radiohead, в песнях которых стена звука появляется к концу и деформирует песню, то треки MBV будто бы деформированы изначально: они состоят с первой и до последней секунды из стены звука (что и отличает звучание шугейза), и, что самое примечательное, их стена звука работает, великолепно звучит даже треками по 6-7 минут. Я не могу ставить данный альбом на один уровень с loveless, так как тот релиз больше подходил под эпоху и стал большим шагом в эволюции рок музыки. Любовные 4/5.

This album serves a long-awaited continuation of My Bloody Valentine's classic sound. It's melodic, dense, layered and textural, but also slightly more aggressive and disjointed than the continuously flowing dreamscape of loveless. Slight differences aside they really don't reinvent the wheel here, it's more like "here's the wheel you already know and love, with some bits and pieces added". And to that I say thank you.

This was tough to get through. Just incessant droning and bored echoing vocals. I liked some of their prior albums but this one had no highlights.

The great return of shoegaze giants My Bloody Valentine. After switching labels, technical problems with their new home studio, and writers block, the band dissolved by 1997. Only Kevin Shields was left from the band to deliver any material to the new label, of which they had a few hours recorded. The band would reform in the mid-2000s for a bit of touring, which restarted old recording sessions from those troubled times. How well did those old song ideas age? Incredibly well. What a band. What a mass of sound they've created. It feels untouchable, like a mountain of vibration. The album crescendos in such a way that feels like they making music out of pandora's box itself. Shoegaze doesn't even describe how deep and rich the songs are. Fantastic.

MBV always has a way of digging into the subconscious with guitars, and regardless of the appeal, you have to appreciate that's a pretty incredible thing to achieve.

In a culture consumed by the nostalgic need to regurgitate past successes, we are increasingly fortunate to have had (hopefully still have) a band like My Bloody Valentine that both sounds like none other and is resolutely uninterested in recycling sounds from 20+ years ago.

I love this project, but I sometimes feel the perception you get of some artists are victim to the order you get their albums in. Example: I got 6 of Bob Dylan’s 7 albums on this list in my first 100 Albums, Time out of Mind and Royal Albert Hall were the first (not the best introductory to him) and 700 albums later I haven’t pulled Highway 61 Revisited. Which is by far his most acclaimed.) I bring this up in the case of MBV, as I’ve gotten them almost back to back, but neither of them being Loveless, which holds great weight to a lot of people. Both their debut and their long awaited follow-up to the aforementioned Loveless, I just can’t fully grasp. It’s a paradox of enjoying each sound individually, but with it all together, maybe I don’t? I’m not sure. I wonder if I would’ve enjoyed it more had I gotten Loveless first? Objectively this is a good album, but it lacked something for me. I’m really hoping this can be one of those album’s like previous ones to where, down the line I can relisten with fresh ears and enjoy this album more.

I'm sure someone somewhere considers this brilliant to to me on this day it's allot of noise. So yeah my listening was less than ideal as my current gig is wearing me out and making me crazy.

The music is interesting until it becomes redundant and boring. Lyrics are nonsensical and hard to decipher. This may be my first one star. I cannot determine whether the music pushes it to another star. Just not for me.

It's a vibe more than an album

You know the joke about sparkling water, how it tastes like it sat next to a fruit while it was being made? That's what this album feels like. It has the essence of music, but it's not quite flavorful. I genuinely like Lo-Fi. I also discovered through this app that I like shoegaze. But this is a little too much of both. I constantly feel like I would like this more if it were turned up. I constantly feel like I would like this more if the distortion wasn't drowning out the true sounds of the songs. I constantly feel like I would like this more if the vocals weren't so wispy. At the same time, I feel like changing those things would ruin the heart of what this is supposed to be. So I'm torn. It's not quite enjoyable, but it's not so bad. It has its moments where I'm totally digging it, and then I'm just bored to tears.

Looking at what fans of this band like on Spotify it says slowdive, have a nice life and panchiko. In an ideal world all of these bands would have a place on here. How isnt Souvlaki on here seriously? Have a nice life too. Panchiko I kinda get cuz they didn’t get popular till years later…. Anyway I digress, for the first few tracks it’s inclusion seems stupid, it’s loveless 2.0 innit? Then it begins to have it’s own personality. Do I prefer it to loveless? Fuck no! But I do like it, shoegaze isn’t a genre where I have any ‘deep knowledge’ but mbv is good for what it is. 4/5

You genuinely hear more interesting and enjoyable music while on hold to the bank. I honestly don’t have a clue who this is intended for. Who could possibly listen to tracks like Is This And Yes and Nothing Is and feel anything but contempt for the pathetic morons who put these annoying and repetitive sounds out into the world.

Loveless is a damningly difficult album to follow up on, and while mbv's self titled effort doesn't hit the same highs as I Only Said, When You Sleep, Only Shallow, etc., there are some good moments, and this record is well worth listening to. Just don't go in only planning to compare against Loveless.

Y'know, generally speaking, I don't feel like I've had much luck with albums labelled as Shoegaze. I mean, you just have to look at my lowest-average genres: currently, it's tied with World for the worst with a 3.17, and it's that not far ahead of Post-Punk's 3.28. Even if it's still above 3, it's not **not** an indication of something. Yet, looking back through the albums my group has gotten that've been labelled Shoegaz, it seems like I've actually been way kinder to them than I'd previously thought. Heck, there's an album labelled "shoegaze" that I'd given a **5**. Realistically, it seems like the only reason why it's so far down my genre ranking is because I once gave PSYCHOCANDY a 1 outta 5 — and that was more because I found it horrendously mixed and unlistenable noise than for any thoughts of "Shoegaze." (For the record, the same "'coz I gave one album a 1" thing goes for World music as well, 'coz fuck Koffi Olomede.) In fact, really thinking about it, PSYCHOCANDY is probably the big reason why I've come to feel like I hold such disdain for Shoegaze. It's not fair to every other album labelled as such, I know, but someone it's just wiggled its way into my mind as **the** definition of the genre, even though it's really more "noise music" than anything else. As well, I'm probably getting it a bit mixed up with the real dislike I hold for Post-Punk... And, I'unno, it seems like one of those genres snobby people tell you're supposed to like. That's petty, but I can't act like that's not a factor here. So coming into this album, I was... **Really** not looking forward to it. With my skewered preconceptions, backed with a random couple seconds from the middle of a random song, I seriously doubted I was gonna rate it that highly. At best, I could see giving it a 2. It didn't help, either, to find out that this album was entered into the 1001 Albums book only a year after its release, only to then immediately be removed in later revisions. Seemed like I was gonna get a little bit of that "But did it get put into this book too soon?" bias I'd previously slapped CHEMTRAILS OVER THE COUNTRY CLUB with. Things were not looking up. But there's one review I'd read that suddenly popped into my mind before I pressed play that made all the difference. More specifically, it was these four words: "Ambient music for metalheads." And then it clicked. Oh — **THAT'S** what this shit it! Keeping that in mind, being someone who very much enjoys both ambient music and metal... Yeah, yeah, no, I liked this a lot. Like, just figuring that I wasn't supposed to scrutinize this so hard; that I was just supposed to get lost in these beds of fuzzed out and reverb guitars... Goodness, it did the world for me. Not that I don't still have problems, of course, the biggest of which being that, like... Even understanding this material as ambient music, there are spots where it can get a little too repetitive? I mean, this album isn't something like MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS, where it was out and out explicitly designed to be wallpaper: stuff you're not supposed to pay attention to, or, at best, get lost in a trance listening to. The songs on this album are still, y'know, **songs**. Even if the vocals are done to be incomprehensible, you're not supposed to ignore this stuff. It's a lot easier here to notice when these songs dedicate themselves to playing the same riff over and over again for what feels like a whole minute. That, and, well, speaking strictly in matters of taste, I've always preferred my ambient music to exist in the realm of electronic music. There's the aforementioned MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS, but I'm also one of the rare few people who's a big fan of THE ENDLESS RIVER. This isn't even to mention all of the light Moog music I consider ambient for how relaxing it can be — MOTHER EARTH'S PLANTASIA and all that. There's a lot of spots on this album I do legit find pretty despite being largely guitar noise. The tone and pitch they hit just scratches the right part of my brain. All the same, however, there are some tones, like, while I wouldn't call them ugly or unlistenable... Well, like the repetition, they're a bit too noticeable for me to fully eat this up as ambient music. Despite those two lengthy paragraphs of complaints, though, I wanna re-emphasize that I did actually like what I heard. It's a harsh cloud of music, sure, but it's not a bad one to float away on. I can honestly hear why so many critics named this one of the best albums of 2013 and why someone was so horny to add it to this book. It's not something I feel like I'd 100% agree on in either case, but given that hours before listening to this album I was mentally preemptively writing a straight **1** review, I can at least say it surpassed my expectations. Enough so much that I even considered giving this a 4 — but given my complaints, I think a 3 better fits how I feel about this album. The funny thing is, despite my mostly positive feelings, this is still gonna move Shoegaze as a whole down to being my number one worst rated genre by average (3.14). A 4 or higher would've saved it from that fate, but it's not like I'm gonna rate albums just to manipulate my averages, y'know? I'm not that crude. The way I figure it, if nothing else, at least it didn't move down as far as I would have if I'd given it a 2 (3.00) or a 1 (2.86). This keeps Shoegaze's small margin above dropping below 3 — and, I'unno, if I were the embodiment of Shoegaze, I'd be pretty alright with that.

While what shoegaze my group has gotten so far on our journey has been kind of lackluster in areas, you certainly can't say that about a group like My Bloody Valentine. And of course, while not exactly as genre defining as Loveless, this is still some Damn Good Shoegaze. Solid 5 Stars.

I’m at a 3, but I was surprisingly close to a 4 at points. I tend to harp on the thought that “the first minute is the whole track” is a desperately negative thing, and it usually is – I find it to be an exercise that shows that a song is sometimes just an idea stretched out to fill time, with nothing really thought out past the first chorus. Shoegaze is the exact type of genre that leans into this philosophy as a tool for music to explore soundscapes through minor adjustments, and challenges the notion of “first minute = whole track” being inherently bad. If I’m being honest, as far as this album goes, it succeeded a few times – there are tracks here that I would classify as “first minute”-y tracks that really won me over, but it’s about a 50/50 split. The last time we got a pure shoegaze album, to my memory, was “Nowhere” by Ride, released in 1990, and my initial assessment of shoegaze was that “it’s like leaving the reverb in as if it’s a smoke cloud from a fire; it just hangs around, and stays there, and it doesn’t really bother you, but it is kind of weird that it’s there”. This is a different variety of shoegaze, blended with more ethereal instrumentation & production to feel like the in- between phase of a lucid dream. The overblown guitars feel like the brain starting to stir awake, but whenever melodies pop in to cut through the mix, it’s a welcome remnant to grasp onto and really make something click. It’s a very hit and miss effect (at its very worst on “nothing is”, which just droned for me as an exercise in madness), but when it works, it really works – there are about 4 or 5 tracks on this album I think I could go back to, just to try & capture that same feeling they gave me again. The other 4 or 5 tracks fall short of that same goal, and don’t inspire the same level of imagination, mainly because their instrumentation isn’t as captivating, and there’s never a chance to enter the zen state with them. I do think I “get” shoegaze now, in a more proper way; apparently, these guys have two other albums on the big list, and if “Loveless” is this absolutely seminal 90s record and the pinnacle of this style that people claim it to be, I think it could be really good. For this, as a 1997 project dragged all the way into 2013 like it’s Duke Nukem Forever, I think it’s a fine enough showcase of the genre, and with maybe a little more time to reflect on each track and modernize them, this could’ve really shined through a bit more. For now, it’s a 3, with glimpses of a 4 for me, but too much inconsistency & a few too many “first minute”-y songs to get to that point. It is a recommended listen though; my “meh”s could be someone else’s “wow”s, and I guess that’s the beauty of a genre founded in noise as an instrument.

Album takes off like an airplane in the distance. Definitely its own wall of sound.

This album was already legendary before its release was even announced, as it took the band 22 years to follow-up their 1991 classic Loveless. After many many delays and rumours it finally saw the light of day and then its notoriety promptly faded rather quickly. Not that it is a bad album or anything, but it definitely did not live up to its legendary expectations. It's no Loveless, but it is enough to scratch that itch. Definitely the type of album to grow on me after a few listens, musically it's a hypnotic dreamy wall of sound that blends melody and distorted noise. Certainly not commercial and not for everyone but something I'll come back to.

This is definitely an album that I truly love. When you play it, it feels like it’s divided into three sections. The first part is more in line with Loveless, with its swirling, dreamlike guitars. The middle section leans more into the melodic, ambient, and introspective side of shoegaze. The last third of the album shifts into a more experimental sound, with heavier electronic elements and beats that almost have a breakbeat feel. What’s nice about this album is that MBV stayed true to their signature sound while also pushing into new territory. It’s one of those albums that gets better and more rewarding the more you listen to it.

This was a complete waste of time and space on this list.

First album was definitely a lightning in a bottle for My Bloody Valentine. Every subsequent release is like a parody of that album. m b v is basically a boring and uninventive pastiche of their earlier work. It is very disappointing and it was definitely a waste of time.

Having heard a majority of Loveless at other times I’ve always been a sort of passive fan of MBV as a band. That being said I wasn’t expecting much from an album over 20 years removed from their much beloved masterpiece. I certainly didn’t expect them to push the level of atmosphere and distortion as much as they have on this album. This album excels in creating overwhelming, all encompassing atmosphere to the point where the songs almost become secondary to the soundscape they are creating. At times it’s glitchy and chaotic, and at others it’s coherent and beautiful. I think this albums perceived lack of focus is at once it’s greatest flaw and it’s greatest strength. The songs themselves are seldom stand outs or catchy but the ambience they create are unique and enveloping. The sounds on this album show a level of mastery in the way that they make something so precisely intentional sound so natural and accidental. As an experience the album pushes the boundaries of a ‘gaze’ album and the sounds that can be achieved which is commendable and if the right mood catches you, extremely enjoyable. However I find myself unable to recall any of my favourite moments or tracks as the songs lose their individuality and impact to the overall vision. Not something I would return to regularly but definitely a well made and interesting sound. 3.5/5

I can't help but compare it to Loveless. And it's entirely different from it. If Loveless was an anthemic cinematic banger, this is more a slow heady meditation in shoegaze. Abstract. It just washes over you in the first listen. It's only after 4-5 listens that the melodies start to condense from the thick smokes of hazy guitars. And just when you think you are getting it, the last two tracks completely throw you out again. Though an admirer of shoegaze, I can't pretend to 'get' them. Still, it's bold and fresh. Might really be a phenomenal experience listening to it while high.

Never cared about this band. Have tried to listen over the years because on paper they sound like a band I would like. Maybe it’s my mood, but I am really digging the sounds on this album. “Only tomorrow” has really grabbed me. This is a really good ambient album.

lovely gorgeous…made me want to curl up and go to sleep (compliment). like a beautiful warm rumbling furnace or perhaps a nice vacuum cleaner. not nearly as dynamic or varied as their other earlier albums but i don’t mind.

Not sure if this band is quite my vibe. It's a little trippy, like something I'd imaging would be great for taking hard drugs to, but when your sad. Crank the reverb up on the guitar, and occasionally sing a soft high voice, but don't sing too often

82/100. A pretty damn good shoegaze record. This is the kind of album that makes you want to lean back, relax, and put your feet up while soaking in the music.

Listened to 30 seconds of three tracks then gave up. Which is what they should've done. Taking the trash can out is more enjoyable than submitting my ears to this.

I know that it was a stylistic choice, but I hate the mix on this album. Everything sounds muddy and the vocals are buried. There's actually some interesting things happening, and with a decent mix I'm sure this would be better received.

Incredibly tedious

The album spoke to mankind’s highest nature transporting the listener to a spiritual transcendence. The profound lyrics tease and conjure imagery hidden behind a “Phil Spector Wall of Sound”—if I could only understand them! Oh, if I could only appreciate the sublime musicianship that crafted this album. But I don’t—and P. T Barnum was spot on.

What an odd album. The first few songs felt like I was a notch or two off of the intended radio station. It honestly sounded like my headphones went bad. The more I listened to the radio static the more I started to... well "enjoy" isn't the right word... "tolerate" it? I did actually enjoyed the song "in another way." Ultimately, I'm conflicted with this album. I think I could be indoctrinated to enjoy it, but on first blush it's not really my jam. A little too much noise and not enough music.

I don't know how to explain it, but this album did not really work for me. They're using this harsh sound to make really soft music, it dissonates in my head, I kind of like what I hear, but I'd like it to be something else entirely. A lot more brutal

Hey kids, gonna let you in on a little secret… You too can buy a Fender Jazzmaster, a fuzz pedal, a loop pedal and rail on the tremolo all day. I’m kidding, but only by half. I’m actually surprised by how much this kind of reminds me of a Stereolab album in a few places. Better than I expected, tbh, but I’m not sure why My Bloody Valentine records always seem to give me a headache.

Not a huge fan of them, but I do like them. Atmospheric but underwhelming. Not their best.

Didn't really go anywhere, nothing really happens here. I imagine live this is a great experience but this isn't really for me. Listened to loveless after this based on Chris's recommendation and that was much better, again would be great love in a intimate venue or maybe as a headliner in the dark on a bigger stage. When it all boils down to it I'm too much of a basic bitch for all this.l, that's a me problem though. Low 3.

Inaudible and what I could hear was boring

The opening track is rough and I wish it weren't there. I liked the rest quite a bit. Sure it drones on. But in a cool way.

3.5 stars. Noisy/distorted shoegaze with minimal singing and lyrics. Some of it is too repetitive and annoying ("nothing is") and some of it is catchy and enjoyable: standouts "new you" and "only tomorrow".

One minute into the first track and I knew this one was going to be a slog to get through. Boy was I right. The mix is ridiculously muddy and the songs go on and on and on and on with nothing happening. I really hope my friends and I's band wasn't this rough to listen to in 2007, but it might be the case. This one gets 2 stars because, despite being rough to get through, I save 1 star reviews for ones that I laugh at and say "how the hell did this one make the list?".

Too sad to be ambient, too ambient to be sad

I’ve been thinking a lot about Loveless– an album that eluded my ears and my taste for so long that I had to throw in the towel, accept that I respect it, but also accept that it isn’t for me. When it came up for me early on the generator, I had come to what I thought was a final determination, that I felt it was a mid album I wanted to caste aside so I could finally move on with my life after nearly two decades of trying to “get it.” And yet, 300 albums later, I’ve found myself thinking about Loveless again, wondering if I should give it another chance, concerned that my apathy dismissed the number of earworms that’ve stuck with me still, despite listening to at least 150ish albums I supposedly enjoy more, at least according to a 5-star rating system. And so, m b v presents a fun opportunity. Maybe meeting shoegaze in the modern era is what I need in order to appreciate My Bloody Valentine. The answer is yes, it’s exactly what I needed. m b v is easily a better album than Loveless to my ears. That’s in large part thanks to the production, which is much cleaner, and actually allows Shield’s Christmas Tree pedalboard to simultaneously achieve his desired washed-out sound while not feeling like a mudslide in my earholes. This, in turn, allows the actual songs behind the effects to not only be enjoyable, but audible. I know that was the aesthetic choice of Loveless, which does have some solid songs buried beneath that choice, and is part of the album’s lore. But I don’t know….I like to hear songs when I listen to them, which I know is a crazy fucking concept. So we’re already starting off strong in comparison. I also think I just like the songs more on m b v. While before, My Bloody Valentine aimed for blown-out indie rock, this time around, they’re largely aiming for blown-out post-punk, and I’m a lot more amenable to that style. The back half in particular stands out, with “new you” and “in another way” being instant grooves and instant revisits. I honestly could listen to Side B front to back, no issue. And there’s plenty of energy on “only tomorrow” and “who sees you” to make me immediately like the majority of this record. That’s not to say that there’s a lack of spaced-out slow core, from “she found now” to “is this and yes” to “if i am,” but by incorporating more subtle guitar work, synths, and other new touches, I think there’s a level of sonic diversity to the style this time around. And I also think I like all of these songs, even in their prolonged balladry, more than almost every song on Loveless. But most of all, it’s about the level of indulgence. The closest Shields gets to feeding his effects demons is the closer, “wonder 2,” which still has just enough energy to cut through his literal music for airports. The second closest is the opener, “she found now,” but it’s folkish, Man With His Guitar™️ approach makes it much more tolerable. The rest of the record has real energy, and now that the aesthetic distortion is less intrusive and more well-rounded, that energy is much more palpable and immediate. Am I now shoegazed-pilled? Will My Bloody Valentine suddenly become my favorite band in the world? Am I going to go out and buy 500 guitar pedals from independent evangelicals? Probably not, but I might revisit Loveless, and I’ll certainly talk less shit about this band in the future. I don’t anticipate revisiting m b v frequently, but I can proudly say that I am sincerely into this record. See, even when you think you hate something, there’s always a counterpoint!

I love My Bloody Valentine. Helped me get into shoegaze. This album wasn’t as good as their second, but it does its own thing. More dreamy, less intense overall. Loved it. Standouts: everything but and this and yes and nothing is.

Interesting as I have never heard this group before, and I respect that this album is in a certain genre of music more about creating an aura, but it's not really for me. This is good for an ambient mood if you need it, but is mostly fuzzy instrumentals.

Loveless was a revelation. It took the lessons of the Velvet Underground and descendants (Jesus and Mary Chain, Sonic Youth, et hoc genus omnes) about the use of noise in rock and roll and took it to an extreme. It wasn't pure noise (a la Merzbow) -- there was still melody and a song in there -- but the presentation was so extreme that it threatened to break everything you knew about music. Everything was mixed upside down, bathed in distortion and reverb and other effects, with a woozy relationship to pitch and harmony. Vocals to the back! Drums almost inaudible! A genuinely groundbreaking record. And they were loud, by god! I saw them at the Sydney University Refectory in 1991, and the volume was staggering. A friend who was a massive MBV fan smuggled in a tape recorder to bootleg the show. But when we listened back to the tape, it was 90 minutes of white noise. The volume just blew out the poor little condenser mike in his walkman beyond what it could handle. So, given all that, I remember there was massive excitement when My Bloody Valentine finally announced the release of this album, after 22 years of "we're working on it, it'll be out real soon now, I promise". I signed up for a mail-order copy as soon as it was announced. But my reaction then (despite some of the hagiographic reviews) was somewhat underwhelmed. Yes, it is still clearly a My Bloody Valentine album, constructed from the same toolkit and aesthetic framework. Yes, there are a few good songs on it, and yes they have updated (slightly) some aspects of their approach. But it isn't that different, really, to Loveless, and in the intervening 22 years plenty of other bands and musicians had picked up the gauntlet of ideas from Loveless and taken them to more interesting places. I think audiences had a genuine desire for something that moved and surprised us in the same way that Loveless did when it was released. But we are in a different world now, a post-Loveless world. While this is an album by the same band (and a good album too), you can't recapture that spark and shock of hearing Loveless when it was still new and fresh. It's an unreasonable expectation that we had, but we had it all the same. I think we tried to fool ourselves into thinking that mbv has the same emotional impact as Loveless, but it doesn't, it can't, it couldn't possibly. It's an impossible task for any band; be the same enough to satisfy our nostalgia for the previous masterwork, but different enough to feed our need for novelty. Waiting 22 years to release really only exacerbated the tension. But is it any good to listen to? Well, that depends on whether you like to specific and somewhat extreme thing that My Bloody Valentine does. Personally, I like something that is noisy and difficult and loud (really loud!), but still has a good tune, and that it right in MBV's sweet spot. But, truth be told, this is only the second or third occasion I have played this in the past ten years since its release. It's better and more interesting than I remember, but it's not enough to make me want to play this instead of Loveless if I was in the mood for this sort of thing. This is a good (but not essential) album that fits to my specific taste, but I understand that many won't find it palatable at all.

I spent most of my teen years confusing this band's name with My Chemical Romance. Maybe it's because they sound like a nothing burger that I can't remember them being their own thing.

A little less interesting than loveless. Shoegaze is definitely not my first love, but its actually quite nice to listen to at work. Even so, I would still put on loveless any day of the week over this.

I've got this album in my collection, but I don't think it's that great. Most of the shoegaze stuff passed me by at the time, and even when My Bloody Valentine reappeared with this album, I wasn't convinced. The critics were, but what do they know? The tracks seem a bit long. It's all a bit wavery, to the point that if I had this on vinyl, I'd think I had a defective pressing. If a shoegaze album should be on this list, I don't think it's this one.

The sounds of a dystopian future, that’s miserable, grey where all joy, fun and enjoyment are banned. Listened, in pain for 46 odd minutes for a song to breakout, only to be frustrated. Had to look at the tracks run times on several occasions because thought they were on for an eternity only to find only minutes had pasted. Guess you can listen to this, ? sound, to experience a waking coma. Not for me, I’ve heard things since I started this project I haven’t liked but have at least now experienced but this no I’m not glad that I experienced that once in my life. The silence when it eventually ended was so much better than anything while it was droning on. Their Spotify entry “redefine what noise means ….” Sorry emperors new clothes, Still shit.

This is a hell of an oddity. I was expecting a 40-plus minute exercise of tedium. Nothing but ambient guitars and background noise, like what the reviews were saying. However, after listening to it, I’m torn. Some of the songs were ambient guitars and background noise, like the first track ‘she found now’. But the others… how do I explain this? See, I actually enjoyed the vibe of some of this songs. They feel weirdly nostalgic and for what it’s worth… it is good background music. But the songs don’t stick. Like after a song ends, my mind won’t absorb it. There’s nothing memorable. I wanted to like this. I was really getting into it. But an album that can’t stick with me is only ok. Favorite track: who sees you Other hits: the ones that sounded somewhat normal (is this and yes, in another way, new you) idk this one was hard

Most of the record feels like Loveless 2: Electric Boogaloo. That's not a bad thing - Loveless is critically acclaimed, genre and era-defining album, after all. But over 20 years had passed between the two. It almost feels 'safe' in a way that a wall of several hundred guitars stacked on-top of each other shouldn't. But, there are several moments in the latter half where they decide to explore different rhythms, and it leaves me gasping for more. new you is an exploration of other genres from their era. Dance beats with far fewer overdubs. nothing is is a hypnotic guitar and drum loop, with layers upon layers of tracks stacking on top of each other like a shoegaze trifle. wonder 2 is drum & bass, but with the intensity of a fever dream. This was originally a very frustrated 4, but I've had to revise it down to 3.

2 really hate this style of vocals

It’s not bad but I can’t just listen tj 45 minutes if this shit. Not for me but I get why people want it. For me it’s too light to be heavy and heavy to be light and I’m just not interested in this. I heard about this band growing up like they were some mythic Beatles like geniuses. Shit is good but it’s not mind blowing good. But I’m bailing. Bye.

OMG, THIS IS MY FAVORITE MY BLOODY VALENTINE'S ALBUM. The soft noise and sound wall give you the feeling of being pulled away from everything and drifting in the beautiful blueness. Sometimes, I love it more than Loveless. This is so beautifully and perfectly done, so admirable I'm speechless. A completely unarguable 5/5 album here because, damn, this is one of my all-time favourites.

This was designed to help people fall asleep quicker right? From the band name I was expecting something more punk or emo, either of which would have been more preferable to this. I can’t imagine people wanting to go see this horseshit live at a concert. Boring as hell. The vocals were barely perceptible and added nothing. Fucking awful.

Sonically artful and totally engaging at times – musical equivalent of a Gerhard Richter canvas, giant, sprawling and wondrous and inviting viewers/listeners to immerse and get deeply and lysergically lost. the opener is just dazzling in its roaring quietude (quiet being the new loud) and "in another way" is tremendous, at once overwhelming and beguiling. A few other cuts challenging but well any effort required. Objectivity compels one to point out that three MBV records is borderline too much but one's quite pleased they are here (and for whichever is the main fanboy). This isn't Loveless but their second best, and stunningly original.

I thought my speaker were broken, played something else. Came back, was adamant that it must be my speakers. This can't be "on the list"? Do people listen to this? I'm just confused.

When shoegaze legends, My Bloody Valentine, released their first album in over two decades, there was a considerable amount of hype in the music press. And unless you really dislike shoegaze, it didn't disappoint. The opening tracks recall the band's famous past releases. The remainder of the album evolves their sound to more experimental stuff, apparently heavily inspired by drum n bass (which is a combination I wouldn't have imagined). Whether My Bloody Valentine deserves 3 spots on this list, I'm not sure. But it definitely was a pretty cool comeback.

Valve releasing the lastest Half-Life game for a slowly dying gaming trend (one that also doesn't play nice with glasses) feels like a cruel twist of fate, a monkey's finger wickedly curling up. Half-Life: Alyx, by all accounts, is a good game, and shows that Valve still has it. this infuriates me; HL:A is a great game that the company has the capacity to make, but refuses to do so on anything one could consider a reasonable basis. why would they? if you owned the biggest computer games market in the world and could print money with live service multiplayer games, why would you bother with things like narrative experiences? just shuffle the desks and collect the dough. it's fine. nothing can convince me that any part of m b v was recorded in the 90's, much less the 2000's. i think maybe Shields wrote some of the songs in that period of time, but the earliest i could see the record starting production is 2009. by then, Loveless had essentially gone from the record that started that weird trend of loud guitars in British music to being the blueprint for any band that wanted to make "shoegaze". so what we get isn't anything new or exciting, but rather just... more Loveless. and more Loveless is fine, but i'm seeing this assertion that this is in any way less innovative than the records that came after it. it feels like everyone who loved My Bloody Valentine waited 22 years for the Amnesiac to the last album's Kid A. that's fine. the vocals are pretty similar, as are the odd, charming ambient experiments, and even if they're lowered in the mix, the guitars still have that classic glidey sound to them. what the album's sound lacks, really, is an actual progression of what was approached before. "If I Am" has baggy beats underneath Bilinda's (or Kevin's) vocals like "Soon" does. "Only Tomorrow" is close enough to "Sometimes" that i feel like they could transition into each other comfortably. "Wonder 2" betrays a new direction in sound for the band, but good luck seeing them ever get there; other than that, My Bloody Valentine sounds largely the same. it's an adjusted frame, not another picture. and that's fine. Kevin Shields does not make music. he makes money off of music. and that's fine. if you wanna do that, that's ok. you can go recluse! you can write your one book and go "nah, i fuckin nailed it" whenever the music press bugs you for an interview. it's ok to hang it up -- Mark Hollis did. Harper Lee did. Boards of Canada did (stop lying to yourselves). it's also ok to just put out a good album every four years or so -- nothing to top your magnum opus, but nothing really could, so why bother? you're still making something you believe in. what i can't abide is not doing anything for a near quarter century, putting out something that sounds like it could have been made four years after and is solid, and then going back to doing nothing for the next quarter of a century. you can't do both. in short, it's fine. the album is fine, good even. i hate it.

My Bloody Valentine is one of those bands that I've heard the name get thrown around related to other bands that I like, but I've never actually listened to them. Consider this my introduction, and it's an interesting place to start. MBV released their first album in 1988, their second was a hit in 1991, and then they broke up and didn't release another album until 2013. This is the 2013 album. There seems to be a lot of debate about what exactly counts as shoegaze, but everyone seems to agree that MBV is definitely it. This particular album can basically be broken into thirds. The first three songs are classic shoegaze sound (apparently most similar to their early stuff), lots of soft vocals and fuzzy guitars. The middle third moves away from the guitar and is a bit more of an electronic sound, and then the last third picks it up just a bit and is almost more alt-rock-y. Frankly, I thought it was just ok. I really thought I might like it more than I did, it wasn't bad or anything but it definitely fell a bit flat on the whole. I do think this is the type of album that would grow on you over time, so I'm open to this being one that I revisit in the future (probably after I get Loveless on here). It seems like it might hit on a snowy night in the middle of the winter, maybe I'll try again on one of those. I think I also saw that this is one of the albums that was added to the book at one point, and then removed on a later update. It shows that it can be hard to assess these more recent albums. This seems to have gotten a ton of hype when it came out, which totally makes sense given it was an unexpected release that came after like 22 years of no new music. The hype seems to have faded over time though (though one thing I've learned listening to all these albums is that popular opinion about an album can definitely ebb and flow over time). I feel this warrants a review in two halves as the album felt like that to me. First half: it’s not exactly Loveless, is it? Sounds like a load of half-finished ideas from those sessions that he’s reheated and churned out for the sake of getting them off his plate at last. 2 stars Second half: ‘new you’ feels like a statement, it’s time to drag MBV into the 21st century with more progressive beats, more defined sound and much more engaging pace to the songs. I will definitely be coming back to tracks 6-9. I’m almost tempted to buy the record and just never bother with side a. 4 stars. Thankfully pretty easy to give the average here. They also have an irritating habit of naming songs like they’re reading a scrabble board. Except it’s a game of scrabble being played by two robots who have only learned pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions. Is this and yes? In another way, nothing is.

I went into this album blind. Just based on the title, I thought it would be an emo band and I wouldnt enjoy it. I was pleasantly surprised to learn it wasnt, instead hearing a more alt-rock style. MBV has a unique sound- ethereal in places and somewhat dream-like, but with heavy rock elements that sometimes border on dissonance. Their songs are pleasant enough though- good music for driving. Overall- solid album

m b v sounds like what happens when you accidentally leave your headphones half-plugged into your phone and convince yourself it’s art. It's like they took everything cool about shoegaze, drowned it in a bathtub of reverb, and hoped no one would notice there's barely a song underneath. The vocals are buried so deep it’s like the band was too shy to actually be heard. The guitars sound like they’re melting in slow motion, and not in a good way. Every track just kind of floats around in a fog, going nowhere, like ambient noise for people who hate melody and pacing.
