Really a 3.5. I enjoyed the sound of this but not enough to add anything to the regular rotation.
Spacey at times, and other times noisy. I though parts of this were good, and other parts were average.
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh what I don’t really have anything to say about this album mainly because there isn’t much to comment on. I think there’s a fine line between experimental and just some noise and I’m really struggling to decide which side this album fits in to. Firstly, I’ll say that this album seems to be split into 3 tracks of 3, not sure if that was intentional but it feels like it. The 3 tracks in the middle are actually quite nice in a way, almost giving off beach house sounds at points but with a bit more rock essence to them. The reason I like these certain tracks is that you can actually hear the vocals, unlike the rest of the album. The first track sounds shoegaze-esque with this constant dreary guitar groaning in the back which isn’t too bad. The following 2 tracks on the other hand gave me a headache just because of how intense they are. This goes for the last 3 tracks too as I’m not sure what’s really going on in them either. I’ll give the band props because to some extent all these tracks are unique in their own way yet fit to the style of the record well. However, I don’t enjoy this album at all, it was honestly too much to get through and I kept asking myself when was the next song was going to play. I appreciate the sound they’re going for but with a bit more variety in the tracks then I would probably enjoy it, I just find it hard when there’s 5, 6 minute long tracks that are filled with loud dreary guitar, it just doesn’t get me excited for the next track. I give this an uhhhhhh so much noise/5

This album feels like huge waves of guitar slowly engulfing me. There's a certain beauty in this genre, and while I'm starting to get into it and appreciate it more, I'm still not blown away by it. I imagine this album being huge for fans alike back when it came out. So, all in all, not great, not terrible, but it's a nice record to listen and further dive into shoegaze, the sounds and atmosphere are truly something else though. Key tracks: She Found Now, Only Tomorrow, New You 5 out of 10
Not what I expected and a pleasant surprise. It might be higher on a second listen in all honesty.

Grumbling anxiety fuzz, kinda cool, kinda backgroundy, kinda terrible in places. It feels unstructured and loose. Makes you lose track of time in a overstimulating kinda way, like getting lost in Selfridge's or Cyberdog in Camden, or both simultaneously.

Atmospheric and experimental, this album is less intimidating than the band name would suggest. m b v does an excellent job of blending art rock and darker tones of an EMO and Goth genre.
I can hear the influence this had on other things I listen to. I hear some Soccer Mommy, Japanese Breakfast, Melody’s Echo Chamber, etc. it’s not something I’d seek out, but it would be good background music. I like In another way best.

So... That's the entire MBV discography, huh? That was quick. After 22 years of album silence from My Bloody Valentine they returned with a self-titled album that somewhat honored the legendary Loveless and somewhat went in an entirely new direction. Shields is still masterful at creating beauty in noise and the first three tracks really blows me back. The following "Is This and Yes" and "If I Am" then suddenly stops the freight train of sound that was set in motion by the opening songs. And although the rest of the album is in no way bad or boring, I don't feel like we're moving at full speed again until the closing "Wonder 2".

Ha, mbv two days in a row! Y'all must really want me depressed. I thought this record was decent, but it felt like they got lost in their own experimentation this time. The album was much longer and meandered in certain pockets a little too much. Some of the experimentation was really gorgeous though, which really makes up for some of the pacing issues. Probably my least favorite mbv record but still highly enjoyable.
Un peu monocorde pour mes goûts, par contre je reconnais la qualité des pièces. Je suis contente d'avoir essayé ce groupe et je compte me familiariser davantage pour l'apprécier encore plus.
was excited to hear this, unfortunately it's nothing special. Sounds unfinished in parts, as the mix goes in and out. Shame, I really try to like MBV as Kevin Shields is such a good dude, but they always disappoint me somewhat
“Shoegaze”, eh? The second half starts doing some interesting stuff, but the first few tracks don’t have enough stuff going on with the synth loops to hold my attention
Is this what they call shoegaze music? Because I did find myself gazing down at my shoes. I noticed that my laces were slightly uneven and fraying a bit at the ends. Also, the tops of my shoes were starting to look a bit faded and scuffed up in a couple of places. Still comfortable and taking me where I want to go though. As far as the music goes, it's okay. I don't mind it, but I don't really love it either. It all sort of washes over you and sounds the same in the end. Strangely, I was listening to the album while I was driving through a thick fog to Wendy's for a breakfast sandwich, and that seemed fitting for the music. 3 stars.
I've liked previous My Bloody Valentine albums but I found this a bit boring.

This album was a 3, I looked up loveless per some reviews and that album is a 4, did some research into the genre shoegaze (indie/alt rock/psychedelic rock blend) and this genre deserves a 5. If you like dream pop and also like the genres I listed above, do some digging it’s worth your time.
I think Loveless is amazing (hence the 5 I gave it) their early work is good too. Somehow this album just doesn't do that much for me. I didn't love it when it came out and I still don't. It's good music to mope to, but it's hardly a fun listen for me. I honestly don't think it needed to make this list. Overall not a bad album, but not anything I'd deem essential listening.

great, anachronistic, fuccking long and amazingly a record only 9 years old. If I was a MBV fan back then I would have been very happy with this.
Quite liked some of the wafty moments. Otherwise a bit noisy
MBV is a bit difficult for me to listen along to, but I'd ay I liked this. My fave tracks are "in another way," "only tomorrow," and "wonder 2".

listened to before didn't love it
If I hadn’t been streaming this, during significant portions of it I would have assumed something was wrong with either the media or my equipment. Apparently this was considered some sort of guitar innovation. A lot of juxtaposition of mumbly incomprehensible lyrics and grating noise. Didn’t care for most it if that’s not obvious.

This album was lying underground for more than two decades. Unearthed. Then released. This intimidating wine blew my head into pieces then threw it in a hazy hyperspace. What a freaking punch. Shoegaze is something else.

I have found i just don't love shoegaze music. I appreciate the musicality of it, but it isn't for me.
I would say the kicker to this modern art picture show of clouds drifting is how deceptively they take you somewhere tangibly different to where they started, but I'm a clod, so I doubt how deceptive the movement was solely dint of the fact that I noticed it. Whatever. It made me feel something decidedly untangible. Which is the point. Delicious.
Loved both "Isn't Anything" and "Loveless" but this one really didn't click with me sadly. 5-6/10
Not as ground breaking as their 1991 album. Enjoyed in places.

Decent album. I liked the 3-part concept of the album, which gave it enough variety to keep it interesting. It’s hard to explain what I enjoyed about it since it’s so simple, but somehow it ends up being good. 6/10

It’s shoegazey. But of course it is. It’s also a return to form. One that I didn’t think I’d be into. What I got was something that explores the sonic in such a way that I’d hadn’t though before.
Weirder than I was expecting. But didn't really catch me.
There wasn't anything i didn't like, though wonder 2 was a bit strange. For me they miss the mark of actually being interesting... lacking a bit of melody/tone or not varying the intensity. Who sees you is probably the closests, where the normal droning gives way to perks of intensity and then fades away. Nothing in has intensity and a vibe but nothing interesting happens. Overall, a challenging and interesting listen.
I rated "Loveless" a 3 a couple of months back, so while seeing the next My Bloody Valentine album appear didn't quite make me throw my headphones out of the window, I wasn't especially excited to hear it. Much like Aardman's upcoming "Chicken Run 2: Dawn of the Nugget" (get hyped) "m b v" is a sequel 22 years in the making. Shoegaze's answer to "Smile", it sat in stilted development for many years, with a notorious perfectionist at the helm, anticipation building with every passing year. Now he knew that that all the time he spent on "Loveless" paid off, what the hell would Kevin Shields do next? The very act of its release must have been a landmark moment: Shields' affirmation that it was perfect, and anybody who didn't get it just wasn't ready. It was lapped up by a succession of nostalgic critics who most likely grew up with the original. So it seems the album's success is a product of its mythology. The songs themselves? There's a lot to like, but it is very hit and miss. Three tracks in, as I was pounded by onslaught after onslaught of walls of guitar, whirling tremolo and indecipherable vocals, I was convinced I was sitting through "Loveless" lite. As the album unfolded, I was struck by its greater penchant for variety, its tendency to explore outside of the band's long established sound. Sometimes it works: "is this and yes" is a lush, organ ballad that drifts by delicately and graciously. There are no guitars, and just a funereal tom beat: it's all dream and all pop, sitting right at home alongside new blood like Beach House. "new you" is catchy and accessible, with bouncy fuzz bass, light tremolo effects, and even some wordless "doo doo" vocals. I hate to throw genre names around, but is this My Bloody Valentine leaning into chillwave? Elsewhere, the experimentation doesn't land with me. "nothing is" is just horrendous, a three minute looped drum-fill and one-note riff that made me feel like I'd been eaten by a broken printer. By the end of the album, "wonder 2", the cacophonous buzzing and droning has taken the form of a jet plane engine: together with the frenzied drum and bass influenced beat, it gives the impression that rather than coming in to land, My Bloody Valentine are taking off. They weren't resting on their laurels with this album, and that's surely worth commending. On the whole though, "m b v" is no better than Loveless- perhaps more interesting highs, but also much more challenging lows. By far and away, the middle three songs are my favourite stretch of the album and really hint at another side of the band: mellow, subdued, content. Altogether, the set leaves us wondering where My Bloody Valentine could go next and which direction they might push. We probably only have until 2035 to wait.

As I listen to this album, two things stand out: -1st, they need to turn the singer’s mic up -2nd, they need to turn the distortion down For the record, I think the reason Shoegaze never really took off as a genre is because distortion and ethereal are oil and water. This is also the reason this album kind of sucks. Not the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but certainly the worst album I’ve had all week. Nothing here to latch onto
I expected to like this more. I read the reviews and even the negative ones were describing things I like in music, so I went in with an open mind, but I found the whole thing rather irritating, really.
mostly pleasant and unremarkable except sometimes the soft-spoken vocals become like nails on a chalkboard. people who care a lot about having Good Taste™ or presenting themselves as such hype the fuck out of this band and it feels like a bit of an emperor's new clothes situation to me. maybe their earlier work is better but i'm not that eager to check it out.
Wow--this may be 22 years after their previous album, which was itself nearly a half-decade after their debut album, but the opening tracks sound an awful like they--or really Kevin Shields--just hopped into a time machine to steal back their sounds from the later 80s and early 90s. Admittedly, they started recording large parts of this album in 1996, and then again in 2006, and then again in 2011-2012 but all the same, talk about arrested development.... I *did* appreciate it that the album's sound begins to morph ever so slightly with the blissfully guitar-free "is this and yes" onwards, and "nothing is" and "wonder 2" wrap things up with a mighty thunder of drum machines and sheer sound (even if it's all still very retro). If nothing else, this album is convincing proof that I'm just not a fan of this band. And pretty interesting to note that Shields was 28 when "Loveless" was released, and he turned 50 when this album came out. That's a lot of water under the bridge. And pooh sticks.
This is the second My Bloody Valentine album that I have gotten from the "1001 albums" book. I still have not gotten Loveless, which is MBV's most famous and well-regarded album. I listened to mbv when it originally came out and my opinion hasn't changed too much. It's a fine comeback album but considering I just have not gotten into My Bloody Valentine too much, it doesn't necessarily hit hard for me. I find the vocals difficult to hear and shoegaze isn't probably my favorite genre of music as it is. It seems like mbv received all of the accolades it did because everyone was so happy that My Blood Valentine was back more than it was about the quality of the new album. I do not believe this is an album I should listen to before I die. My favorite songs: Only Tomorrow Who Sees You New You In Another Way

Just so boring at first then finished in a cacophony of noise. The layered textures are really intricate, but it’s still just so damn boring.

almost features in a white noise for focus playlist I like shoegaze / post-rock kind of distortions in general, and I know m b v, never knew this album, and not sure if 3 of their albums deserve to be here. So I'll hold off from a higher rating for the album I like more.
Disappointing
I think my main issue with My Bloody Valentine is that it sounds like a wall of discordant noise to me. Talking about this band with my eldest child has really helped me to understand them better (them my child AND them the band - confusing I know) - to my child's ears all these sounds are distinct and the way their brain processes it is so different from mine. While its still not a pleasant listening experience for me, I had a lot more appreciation of this album than the last few by MBV, and more of an appreciation for my kiddo too.
It’s alright, but why are the vocals so low? I’ll stick with Bullet For My Valentine instead. 2.5⭐️
i loved 'in another way' and 'nothing is', where they really ratchet it up....but not sure if it's because i was kinda bored with the first six tracks....then the last song kinda loses me again 2.5 stars...rounding down since i was mainly bored with it

In 2013, the return of mbv caused a small stir. No one had really missed them, but the old heads would no doubt enjoy revisiting their former glories and the new generation would get a chance to revel in loveless. A returning great, their new album was treated like all classic artists reformed efforts are: as an interesting subplot to their tour and merch release. I saw them at the Hammersmith Apollo that year and remember telling my parents I'd been having a shoegaze phase and receiving an amused, slightly scoffing response. My habit of dredging up forgotten indie subsects and overblowing their musical significance was well documented. Jump forward to 2026 and shoegaze is a global phenomenon, significantly more popular now than it it's Bristolian heyday: and mbv are still the spearhead. This album has come to mean a lot more than one last hurrah. That new generation of fans took it as their own, cherished it and shared it excessively on first Tumblr and now TikTok. Which I guess makes me one the old heads.
As I listened I became distracted by technical/structural question: are there any other elements the band could have incorporated to make this album more tiresome?

MBV is de grote grondlegger van de shoegaze. En met m b v ook de eerste die in de 21ste eeuw weer voor een revival zorgden. Al kwam die eigenlijk pas veel later. En waar de mede-shoegazers van Slowdive met Slowdive een hele toegankelijke plaat maken in 2017 is m b v echt een hele taaie. Ik kan me de recensies op deze plaat goed voorstellen. Het is vooral hele veel noise en de nummers breken nergens mooi open en hebben 0 catchiness. Ik heb de plaat 3x aangezet en steeds was dit een vrij aangemakkelijke aanwezigheid en ging die weer uit (bijv. de valse tonen in who sees you). Ik heb dus echt wel moeite om het mooie in m b v te horen en geef ze een 6 voor de moeite - en vanwege de liefde voor het genre. 6/10 Highlights only tomorrow

I adore Loveless as a record, so I had high hopes for this, but I just couldn’t get into it, felt very drawn out and at times self-indulgent. Nothing I’d be drawn back to.
A bit more accessible to my delicate ears than the other stuff I’ve listened to by this lot. It was ok, but much of it just seemed to be happening around me rather than grabbing my attention.
Lot of noise trying to be punk/edgy. The band's name lends itself to the emo, cringey stereotypes and the music follows suit

I dont get it
I always get these guys mixed up with Bullet For My Valentine. Anyway, this is some fuzzy dream rock stuff, it's fine but every track sounds the same (he says confidently, nearing the end of the second track). The tracks just kind of meander around and repeat themselves, they seem short on ideas. Turns out I had already listened to Isn't Anything from My Bloody Valentine before, which I called "Just the biggest load of nothing I can remember hearing. Fuzzy recordings of what sounds like a garage band, inaudible lyrics, no tunes or sometimes even rhythms to speak of. There's nothing to get a grip on, it's like trying to grab fog. At times maybe it's noise rock, but it mostly sounds like literally nothing is happening, but loudly - typical shoegaze." This is more of the same, even to the extent that the final couple of tracks were the most interesting, with actual beats. Did we need to include both albums?
All the droniest parts of The Deftones with none of the excitement. Even when the tempo picks up it's repetitive enough that it kills the energy. Not my jam.
Is this the same song for 55 minutes, or just 9 songs that sound the same? You decide. 2/5

I think I understand a little better why they call this style, “shoegaze.” Because I feel like I need to go stare at my feet for a while and figure out what I just listened to.
What a plummet, starting off well enough, but quickly moving to background music, with a long ending in the annoying range. Influences of the most experimental music from the Beatle and Beach Boys did nothing to make this worth listening to again.
I don’t know why music critics seem convinced they know better than the rest of us and keep shoveling multiple noise rock albums onto these lists, knowing we’re likely to tolerate them at best and hate them at worst. This album is a prime example of why critics don’t always know best. My Bloody Valentine’s m b v is a collection of crunchy guitars layered with just enough distortion to obscure everything else, unsettling ethereal vocals that are difficult to decipher, and percussion that feels like an afterthought buried somewhere in the background. Add in a tempo so damn slow it’s as if the entire record was filtered through maple syrup, and you’ve got the complete package. Realizing I still have one more album from this group to get through before I’m done may be the understatement of the year.
Unnecessary noise in parts, but not the worst thing this has generated for me so far
It noise and a lot of distortion. I get that is what the genre is, but I don't want to listen to it. The noise approached something resembling a song in some of the tracks, so it doesn't get the lowest score.

This was a strange album. It's like a souped-up version of the ambient sound music they play at yoga sessions. So inoffensive enough to listen to, but then there would be the occasional more 'wake up and listen' intervention, which was often unwelcome rather than stimulating. Not very good.
I found this to be a pretty tedious listen. It felt like there was an unnecessary excess of effects; perhaps there to mask the fact that the actual songwriting just wasn’t very compelling. The vocal delivery was also rather dull throughout. There were moments where the atmosphere worked well, but for the most part, it came across as a messy exploration of distortion, effects, and melancholy that dragged on far too long. Overall, a few redeeming moments, but not enough to make me say this was good, or even mediocre.

That being said, I was a bit disappointed the first time I listened to "mbv". I only skimmed through it to be honest, so this will be my first full listen. During: ======= So I had company over and listened to the whole album whilst talking with them and did not hear much that grabbed my attention but will skim though it again and rate each song. After : ======= I wended up giving all the songs a 3, though there were a couple that were close to 4 and a couple close to 2. Seeing how's this album isn't that much different than "Loveless", I'm going to have to give it a low mark for suitability. 3 my personal rating 1 suitability for this list 2 impact ----------------------------------------------- 2 composite rating

In 1999, Star Wars Episode 1 was released onto a public that were ravenous for any new Star Wars product. The consensus at the time was that the movie was...let's say "flawed" but that it was definitely worth the wait to have a new Star Wars movie. And hey, the kinks would obviously be worked out in the subsequent movies, right? Cut to a few years later when everyone basically feels duped by the new Star Wars and with a clearer head can see The Phantom Menace for the boondoggle that it always was. So why are we still letting people get away with calling this anything other than a waste of time?

The first two tracks sounded like they were on a radio station that wasn’t exactly tuned in. This was not a great listen.
s m h …there’s a time and place for shoe gazing in a sea of noise, but I stare at my shoes wondering why this was included. The production is murky, and the vocals being mixed purposefully low and indecipherable is just annoying.

Fine to listen to, but not that good like as far as being good. I’m surprised this band was so popular but it’s cool people like stuff like this.
It started as a nice soundtrack to listen while crocheting on the bus; finished like a glitch in the matrix.
This album, while quite edgy and powerful from a sonic perspective, gave me a nasty headache. For me way to much sustained distortion without real melody and no groove.

I came out to bat for Loveless and, should Isn't Anything come up, as I suspect it will, I will take a smaller bat and bunt it into the infield of acceptability. However, this album adds nothing in particular to the MBV catalogue nor to this list. 2 This was not as bad as it ought to have been considering that it largely struck me as the work of a 50 year old man attempting to reproduce that stylish pose everyone thinks he was cool for doing in his 20s - setting the guitar just so, mumbling just so, spurning capital letters. I thought as I listened that m b v might have a pleasing utility as a different sort of stick with which to give loveless another few whacks. This was very cynical of me. Luckily my listening to this album coincided with my reading a Barbara Pym novel which elicited great sympathy for the notion of people in their 50s living in the shadow of their lives in their 20s. We must all do what we can to try to be happy. For myself this will include not listening to much more my bloody valentine going forward. Apart from when I have to. 2/5
a bit boring :( everything sounds the same
I'm 3 songs into this thing so far and I am struggling. The first song was entirely forgettable, so much so that I didn't realize the album started until track 2 which was also forgettable since I don't remember it. Track 3 just ended, but wasn't any good. The remaining 6 tracks didn't get any better. You can't give it a 1 because it's not actively bad in a way that makes you want to shut it off immediately, but you can't give it higher than a 2 because it stinks. No way this is one of the 1001 best albums ever made, or even one of the ones you need to hear at any point in your life. I bet the reviews section is going to be littered with people falling all over themselves to love this thing. Post review read: I was wrong, a lot of people actually seem to agree with me on this one. Shocking

Ok I’d like to start with the positives, the biggest being the guitar playing is sick and super haunting. The other positives is that this album is super smooth and buttery, I normally couldn’t tell when a song started and ended cause it all flowed really well. And I’d also like to add that the music is super chill and relaxing. Those things being said this album felt empty to me. Like it had the charm and the atmosphere of a great indie rock album but they forgot to actually write music and lyrics. I’m obviously being dramatic but it did genuinely feel empty and hollow of an album. I’m hoping to get more form this artist in the future cause instead of this album being not for me and putting me off, it did the opposite and made me hungry for more and hopefully something more substantial.

This was my first exposure to My Bloody Valentine. After I was underwhelmed by the first listen, I followed the advice of AI to turn off volume normalization in my Spotify settings and to listen to the album in thirds. Distorted, fuzzy guitars droned over softly sung, mostly indecipherable lyrics in the first three songs. I imagined Smashing Pumpkins, but I can't picture Billy Corgan wailing over these. The next set of three introduced an organ, stronger drums and random electronic sounds, but the vocals, though more pronounced, remained dreamlike, ethereal and equally unclear. The final three start off kicking, with strong and menacing guitar and synth and powerful, hypnotic percussion on "in another way"—I thought of Nine Inch Nails at one point, but the spiraling synth, almost like bagpipes, washed that away. The power and hypnosis kicked up a notch for "nothing is," and you could feel the intensity grow like an oncoming locomotive as the instrumental barreled toward the end. The final track, "wonder 2," changed the mode of transportation from train to jet, a concert growing in intensity and loudness (except the voices) on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Glad I gave it a second, more informed listen, but it further confirmed that this is not my thing. Respect the effort, though.

Took me a minute to get into the vibe of this. Once I got there it was okay. I much prefer Loveless though.
Couldn't remember if I really hated the last MBV album or surprisingly liked it. Oh there were two albums already and I hated them both. Noise noise noise. Not really sure what the allure is here. There's some atmospheric allure to a song or two. Reading my last reviews it definitely isn't as bad as the other two.
Playing catch up so listening to all 3 MBV albums together. I'm partial to a bit of shoe gaze/ noise distortion and feedback. Gold standard for me is J&MC as they deliver the above along with great tunes and vocals that capture the emotion of the songs. Whilst MBV have some good tunes they are vocally pretty weak - with the vocals washed out and placed low in the mix and as a result I struggle to form connection with the songs. MBV is the worst offender and is by far the weakest of the 3 albums with no notable tracks so scores a 2. Isn't Anything the debut is bit more punkier/rougher and I think would have been fun to see live - scores a 3. Loveless is the best of the lot - with the most polished and accessible songs and strongest vocals.
To call Shields a one-trick pony doesn't cut it. The incessant use of the whammy bar and massive reverb is one heck of a sound, but played repeatedly for 20 years it loses its edge. Secondly, being nearly 20 years in the making, they offer fayre like 'is this and yes' which could've been knocked up in ten minutes. That being noted, I can dig some of this, subject to the pull of the melody rather than the effects. 'only tomorrow' develops into a hypnotic circular track, which they have a skill for. 'who sees you' has the same captivating swirl. 'she found now' may be the most enticing track with some delicate vocals that match the atmospherics. 'Loveless' remains their best and only really worthwhile listen.
Warm, hazy shoegaze swells built from endlessly blooming guitars, submerged bass, soft electronic pulses, and murmured, vapor-thin vocals move this shoegaze album like standing inside a pastel-colored jet engine—beautiful in its swirling, enveloping blur, but so thick and indistinct that the longer it roars, the harder it becomes to tell one shape from another.

Absolutely didn't need to be on this list. Every album by these guys is on here. This was more of the same and not relevant anymore. Not groundbreaking, just more distorted guitar droning with whispery vocals

Honestly? I didn't mind this at all. I think a lot of the critical comments here are pretty accurate -- it can certainly feel like an effects pedal presentation, and at times pretty nonsensical. It was fine shoegaze, nothing earth-shattering, but enjoyable enough as some background music while one works on something else. I cannot imagine intentionally returning to this album though. Especially the last track.

The warped guitar sound of MBV is always fun to hear and there's lots of cool chord changes on these tracks but...man cannot live on cool chord changes alone. These cuts *superficially* resemble songs and hint at having verses and choruses but never fully commit to the idea (though "New You" comes close). As a result, a lot of this sounds like unedited first-draft material that could've used a couple rounds of tightening up
Apparently for like fifteen years I've been conflating the name of this band with the music of Bullet for My Valentine. I can only assume that when I've heard their songs without attribution I've assumed they were The Jesus and Mary Chain songs. It seems like their earlier work would make more sense on this list and I forgot most of this shortly after listening to it, although it was not unenjoyable. 2.5

This album was a bore. There were interesting moments here and there, but the beginning is just such a slog that it’s hard for me to recover from it. Also the vocals are almost exclusively whispered. Why? There are two different singers, why do both of them do this? I will admit that there were some very unique and creative ideas in the second half, I would have loved to hear that throughout. However, they didn’t stop this album from feeling like a chore to listen to. 2/5

The biggest disservice this list could have done to this album is delivering it one day after Loveless, and that’s what it did. It’s still good, but hearing it right after Loveless made it feel very unnecessary. It’s not in the book called Two My Bloody Valentine Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
I feel like this was a band the "real" music kids were into. This album wasn't enough to help me understand them; they should have gone with Loveless, which is more accessible. M b v feels like an album you like if you already like the band. Also, do the lyrics actually matter, or are they just more texture? I don't think I understood a single line.

I'm not sure I get what this was. Some of the songs were like kinda shoe-gazey, and some were just like rhythmic noise (seems to be a trend in my albums here lately...), some with a male lead singer, some a female. Some very electronic and fast-paced, some more drowsy and organic-sounding. There were brief moments when the music was enjoyable, but most of the time I was just left going "wtf even is this?". Two stars.
The previous albuns its ok, but this one is a rubbish. There's nothing special ou different to justifie be on the list. Absolutely pass. Sorry. By the way this noisy sounds bothered me. Two stars is most that this deserve.
Switching to my good headphones certainly helped but my hearing is already starting to go. It's just a wash of color without any root for me. I can appreciate the craft but going to save any good will for their first two albums when I get to them.

I like the shoegaze element more now I’m in my dotage than I ever did at the time. There’s something hypnotic and compulsive about it. That thing where chords are deliberately manipulated to drift in and out of key really, really sets my teeth on edge. So a big of a mixed bag for me. Glad I heard it, not sure I’ll go back to it.
I really wanted to like this and Shoegaze in general, but it always seems to fall just short of my expectations. It's like let's get an electric guitar and go crazy with effects, but unsuccessfully.
Loveless is definitely one of the greats. Even though I didn't love loveless, I remember this one being a disappointment. Look forward to listening again. 1000% does not need to be on this list however. Everyone is good with Loveless. Trust your readers to slightly think for themselves??

Jag brukar gilla suggestivt och lite trip-hopigt sound som ju delvis kan skönjas här, om än i en hårdare och punkigare form. De glimtarna är dock få och i övrigt är det mest plågsamt långtråkigt faktiskt.
Dos álbumes de shoegaze seguidos, qué cosas. Comparado con el anterior (Nowhere de Ride), este me ha parecido más interesante musicalmente, con composiciones más llenas de capas y efectos, más complejas en general, pero sin salirse del sonido atmosférico, distorsionado y sostenido de su género. Pero le tengo que dar mala nota porque no entiendo qué pinta en esta lista. Nowhere y otros álbumes shoegaze de los 90 tienen sentido porque fueron pioneros, pero este álbum es del 2013 y no aporta nada nuevo. Cada vez estoy más desilusionado con esta lista y su sesgo británico. Este libro es una excusa para que unos cuantos críticos soberbios hablen de su música favorita, más que un esfuerzo sincero por recopilar los mejores álbumes de la historia. Una lástima.

Thick fuzz, heavy reverb, slow tempos and grinding churning rhythms, ethereal vocals and lead guitar melodies struggling to escape the event horizon of the dense sound. Good at what it is - noisy textural psych best played loud on a gloomy evening. A welcome new album from a cult band whose reputation grew lots during a long time away, but not one I'd call essential in any way. A few highlights but also a couple of real torpid stinkers that just draaaaaaag onnnnnnnn and the whole thing is pretty monotonous.
If you love FUZZ you'll love this!
I find this a questionable addition to the list. It wasn't off-putting in any way, but it certainly got boring after a while. Its importance seems to come more in the reunion and release of a multi-decade album. Shoegaze emphasis on space will never match post-rock's efforts in making space meaningful.
The dissonant and cacophanous portions are a relief from the sublimated, unfocused, muddy remainder. I didn't hear a reason for this band to have reunited.
Sounds like someone fell asleep on an effects chain and just decided to release the result. It’s all fuzz and haze, no hooks. Just droning guitars and a vocalist that sounds like she's whispering through a pillow. The vocals drift in like a bored ghost and then vanish before you can care. lol at first I thought there was something wrong with my internet connection or something? They drone in a way that sounds like static. I felt like I had to try hard to hear the melody. But the melody wasn’t interesting enough to be worth effort.
